Marine Colloids Boost Nitrogen Fixation in Trichodesmium erythraeum by Photoelectrophy

Nitrogen fixation by the diazotrophic cyanobacterium Trichodesmium contributes up to 50% of the bioavailable nitrogen in the ocean. N2 fixation by Trichodesmium is limited by the availability of nutrients, such as iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P). Although colloids are ubiquitous in the ocean, the effects of Fe limitation on nitrogen fixation by marine colloids (MC) and the related mechanisms are largely unexplored. In this study, we found that MC exhibit photoelectrochemical properties that boost nitrogen fixation by photoelectrophy in Trichodesmium erythraeum. MC efficiently promote photosynthesis in T. erythraeum, thus enhancing its growth. Photoexcited electrons from MC are directly transferred to the photosynthetic electron transport chain and contribute to nitrogen fixation and ammonia assimilation. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that MC significantly upregulates genes related to the electron transport chain, photosystem, and photosynthesis, which is consistent with elevated photosynthetic capacities (e.g., Fv/Fm and carboxysomes). As a result, MC increase the N2 fixation rate by 67.5-89.3%. Our findings highlight a proof-of-concept electron transfer pathway by which MC boost nitrogen fixation, broadening our knowledge on the role of ubiquitous colloids in marine nitrogen biogeochemistry.

Soil microbial community variation among different land use types in the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China is likely to be caused by anthropogenic activities

There are various types of land use in the agricultural and pastoral areas of northern China, including natural grassland and artificial grassland, scrub land, forest land and farmland, may change the soil microbial community However, the soil microbial communities in these different land use types remain poorly understood. In this study, we compared soil microbial communities in these five land use types within the agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China. Our results showed that land use has had a considerable impact on soil bacterial and fungal community structures. Bacterial diversity was highest in shrubland and lowest in natural grassland; fungal diversity was highest in woodland. Microbial network structural complexity also differed significantly among land use types. The lower complexity of artificial grassland and farmland may be a result of the high intensity of anthropogenic activities in these two land-use types, while the higher structural complexity of the shrubland and woodland networks characterised by low-intensity management may be a result of low anthropogenic disturbance. Correlation analysis of soil properties (e.g., soil physicochemical properties, soil nutrients, and microbiomass carbon and nitrogen levels) and soil microbial communities demonstrated that although microbial taxa were correlated to some extent with soil environmental factors, these factors did not sufficiently explain the microbial community differences among land use types. Understanding variability among soil microbial communities within agro-pastoral areas of northern China is critical for determining the most effective land management strategies and conserving microbial diversity at the regional level.

Photosynthetic and biochemical responses of four subtropical tree seedlings to reduced dry season and increased wet season precipitation and variable N deposition

Interspecific variations in phenotypic plasticity of trees that are affected by climate change may alter the ecosystem function of forests. Seedlings of four common tree species (Castanopsis fissa, Michelia macclurei, Dalbergia odorifera and Ormosia pinnata) in subtropical plantations of southern China were grown in the field under rainout shelters and subjected to changing precipitation (48 L of water every 4 days in the dry season, 83 L of water every 1 day in the wet season; 4 g m-2 year-1 of nitrogen (N)), low N deposition (48 L of water every 2 days in the dry season, 71 L of water every 1 day in the wet season; 8 g m-2 year-1 N), high N deposition (48 L of water every 2 days in the dry season, 71 L of water every 1 day in the wet season; 10 g m-2 year-1 N) and their interactive effects. We found that the changes in seasonal precipitation reduced the light-saturated photosynthetic rate (Asat) for C. fissa due to declining area-based foliar N concentrations (Na). However, we also found that the interactive effects of changing precipitation and N deposition enhanced Asat for C. fissa by increasing foliar Na concentrations, suggesting that N deposition could alleviate N limitations associated with changing precipitation. Altered precipitation and high N deposition reduced Asat for D. odorifera by decreasing the maximum electron transport rate for RuBP regeneration (Jmax) and maximum rate of carboxylation of Rubisco (Vcmax). Ormosia pinnata under high N deposition exhibited increasing Asat due to higher stomatal conductance and Vcmax. The growth of D. odorifera might be inhibited by changes in seasonal precipitation and N deposition, while O. pinnata may benefit from increasing N deposition in future climates. Our study provides an important insight into the selection of tree species with high capacity to tolerate changing precipitation and N deposition in subtropical plantations.

Population genetic differentiation and phenotypic plasticity of Ambrosia artemisiifolia under different nitrogen levels

Rapid adaptive evolution and phenotypic plasticity are two mechanisms that often underlie invasiveness of alien plant species, but whether they can co-occur within invasive plant populations under altered environmental conditions such as nitrogen (N) enrichment has seldom been explored. Latitudinal clines in plant trait responses to variation in environmental factors may provide evidence of local adaptation. Here, we inferred the relative contributions of phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation to the performance of the invasive plant Ambrosia artemisiifolia under different soil N levels, using a common garden approach. We grew A. artemisiifolia individuals raised from seeds that were sampled from six invasive populations along a wide latitudinal cline in China (23°42' N to 45°43' N) under three N (0, 5, and 10 g N m-2 ) levels in a common garden. Results show significant interpopulation genetic differentiation in plant height, number of branches, total biomass, and transpiration rate of the invader A. artemisiifolia across the N treatments. The populations also expressed genetic differentiation in basal diameter, growth rate, leaf area, seed width, root biomass, aboveground biomass, stomatal conductance, and intercellular CO2 concentration regardless of N treatments. Moreover, plants from different populations of the invader displayed plastic responses in time to first flower, hundred-grain weight, net photosynthetic rate, and relative biomass allocation to roots and shoots and seed length under different N treatments. Additionally, individuals of A. artemisiifolia from higher latitudes grew shorter and allocated less biomass to the roots regardless of N treatment, while latitudinal cline (or lack thereof) in other traits depended on the level of N in which the plants were grown. Overall, these results suggest that rapid adaptive evolution and phenotypic plasticity in the various traits that we quantified may jointly contribute to invasiveness of A. artemisiifolia under different levels of N availability. More broadly, the results support the idea that phenotypic plasticity and rapid adaptive evolution can jointly enable invasive plants to colonize a wide range of environmental conditions.

Investigating microbial and environmental drivers of nitrification in alkaline forest soil

Ammonia oxidation is a key step in the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen, and soils are important ecosystems for nitrogen flux globally. Approximately 25% of the world's soils are alkaline. While nitrification has been studied more extensively in agricultural alkaline soils, less is known about natural, unfertilized alkaline soils. In this study, microorganisms responsible for ammonia oxidation and several environmental factors (season, temperature, ammonia concentration, and moisture content) known to affect nitrification were studied in an alkaline forest soil with a pH ranging from 8.36 to 8.77. Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), ammonia-oxidizing archaea, and comammox were present, and AOB belonging to genera Nitrosospira and Nitrosomonas, originally comprising <0.01% of the total bacterial community, responded rapidly to ammonia addition to the soil. No significant difference was observed in nitrification rates between seasons, but there was a significant difference between in situ field nitrification rates and rates in laboratory microcosms. Surprisingly, nitrification took place under many of the tested conditions, but there was no detectable increase in the abundance of any recognizable group of ammonia oxidizers. This study raises questions about the role of low-abundance microorganisms in microbial processes and of situations where zero or very low microbial growth coincides with metabolic activity. In addition, this study provides insights into nitrification in unfertilized alkaline soil and supports previous studies, which found that AOB play an important role in alkaline soils supplemented with ammonia, including agricultural ecosystems.

The Role of Glutamine Synthetase (GS) and Glutamate Synthase (GOGAT) in the Improvement of Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Cereals

Cereals are the most broadly produced crops and represent the primary source of food worldwide. Nitrogen (N) is a critical mineral nutrient for plant growth and high yield, and the quality of cereal crops greatly depends on a suitable N supply. In the last decades, a massive use of N fertilizers has been achieved in the desire to have high yields of cereal crops, leading to damaging effects for the environment, ecosystems, and human health. To ensure agricultural sustainability and the required food source, many attempts have been made towards developing cereal crops with a more effective nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). NUE depends on N uptake, utilization, and lastly, combining the capability to assimilate N into carbon skeletons and remobilize the N assimilated. The glutamine synthetase (GS)/glutamate synthase (GOGAT) cycle represents a crucial metabolic step of N assimilation, regulating crop yield. In this review, the physiological and genetic studies on GS and GOGAT of the main cereal crops will be examined, giving emphasis on their implications in NUE.

Data-driven estimation of nitric oxide emissions from global soils based on dominant vegetation covers

Soils are a major source of global nitric oxide (NO) emissions. However, estimates of soil NO emissions have large uncertainties due to limited observations and multifactorial impacts. Here, we mapped global soil NO emissions, integrating 1356 in-situ NO observations from globally distributed sites with high-resolution climate, soil, and management practice data. We then calculated global and national total NO budgets and revealed the contributions of cropland, grassland, and forest to global soil NO emissions at the national level. The results showed that soil NO emissions were explained mainly by N input, water input and soil pH. Total above-soil NO emissions of the three vegetation cover types were 9.4 Tg N year-1 in 2014, including 5.9 Tg N year-1 (1.04, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 0.09-1.99 kg N ha-1  year-1 ) emitted from forest, 1.7 Tg N year-1 (0.68, 95% CI: 0.10-1.26 kg N ha-1  year-1 ) from grassland, and 1.8 Tg N year-1 (0.98, 95% CI: 0.42-1.53 kg N ha-1  year-1 ) from cropland. Soil NO emissions in approximately 57% of 213 countries surveyed were dominated by forests. Our results provide updated inventories of global and national soil NO emissions based on robust data-driven models. These estimates are critical to guiding the mitigation of soil NO emissions and can be used in combination with biogeochemical models.

Inland Waters Increasingly Produce and Emit Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a long-lived greenhouse gas and currently contributes ∼10% to global greenhouse warming. Studies have suggested that inland waters are a large and growing global N2O source, but whether, how, where, when, and why inland-water N2O emissions changed in the Anthropocene remains unclear. Here, we quantify global N2O formation, transport, and emission along the aquatic continuum and their changes using a spatially explicit, mechanistic, coupled biogeochemistry-hydrology model. The global inland-water N2O emission increased from 0.4 to 1.3 Tg N yr-1 during 1900-2010 due to (1) growing N2O inputs mainly from groundwater and (2) increased inland-water N2O production, largely in reservoirs. Inland waters currently contribute 7 (5-10)% to global total N2O emissions. The highest inland-water N2O emissions are typically in and downstream of reservoirs and areas with high population density and intensive agricultural activities in eastern and southern Asia, southeastern North America, and Europe. The expected continuing excessive use of nutrients, dam construction, and development of suboxic conditions in aging reservoirs imply persisting high inland-water N2O emissions.

Anthropogenic N input increases global warming potential by awakening the "sleeping" ancient C in deep critical zones

Even a small net increase in soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralization will cause a substantial increase in the atmospheric CO₂ concentration. It is widely recognized that the SOC mineralization within deep critical zones (2 to 12 m depth) is slower and much less influenced by anthropogenic disturbance when compared to that of surface soil. Here, we showed that 20 years of nitrogen (N) fertilization enriched a deep critical zone with nitrate, almost doubling the SOC mineralization rate. This result was supported by corresponding increases in the expressions of functional genes typical of recalcitrant SOC degradation and enzyme activities. The CO₂ released and the SOC had a similar ¹⁴C age (6000 to 10,000 years before the present). Our results indicate that N fertilization of crops may enhance CO₂ emissions from deep critical zones to the atmosphere through a previously disregarded mechanism. This provides another reason for markedly improving N management in fertilized agricultural soils.

Alterations of ecosystem nitrogen status following agricultural land abandonment in the Karst Critical Zone Observatory (KCZO), Southwest China

Background

Secondary succession after agricultural land abandonment generally affects nitrogen (N) cycle processes and ecosystem N status. However, changes in soil N availability and NO₃ ^- loss potential following secondary succession are not well understood in karst ecosystems.

Methods

In the Karst Critical Zone Observatory (KCZO) of Southwest China, croplands, shrub-grass lands, and secondary forest lands were selected to represent the three stages of secondary succession after agricultural land abandonment by using a space-for-time substitution approach. The contents and ¹⁵N natural abundance (δ ¹⁵N) of leaves, soils, and different-sized aggregates at the three stages of secondary succession were analyzed. The δ ¹⁵N compositions of soil organic nitrogen (SON) in aggregates and soil to plant ¹⁵N enrichment factor (EF = δ ¹⁵N_leaf -δ ¹⁵N_soil), combined with soil inorganic N contents and δ ¹⁵N compositions were used to indicate the alterations of soil N availability and NO₃ ^-loss potential following secondary succession.

Results

Leaf N content and SON content significantly increased following secondary succession, indicating N accumulation in the soil and plant. The δ ¹⁵N values of SON also significantly decreased, mainly affected by plant δ ¹⁵N composition and N mineralization. SON content in macro-aggregates and soil NH₄ ⁺ content significantly increased while δ ¹⁵N values of NH₄ ⁺ decreased, implying increases in SON stabilization and improved soil N availability following secondary succession. Leaf δ ¹⁵N values, the EF values, and the (NO₃ ^--N)/(NH₄ ⁺-N) ratio gradually decreased, indicating reduced NO₃ ^- loss following secondary succession.

Conclusions

Soil N availability improves and NO₃ ^- leaching loss reduces following secondary succession after agricultural land abandonment in the KCZO.

The Relationship between Ectomycorrhizal Fungi, Nitrogen Deposition, and Pinus massoniana Seedling Nitrogen Transporter Gene Expression and Nitrogen Uptake Kinetics

Analyzing the molecular and physiological processes that govern the uptake and transport of nitrogen (N) in plants is central to efforts to fully understand the optimization of plant N use and the changes in the N-use efficiency in relation to changes in atmospheric N deposition changes. Here, a field experiment was conducted using the ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF), Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) and Suillus grevillei (Sg). The effects of N deposition were investigated using concentrations of 0 kg·N·hm^-2a^-1 (N0), a normal N deposition of 30 kg·N·hm^-2a^-1 (N30), a moderate N deposition of 60 kg·N·hm^-2a^-1 (N60), and a severe N deposition of 90 kg·N·hm^-2a^-1 (N90), with the goal of examining how these factors impacted root activity, root absorbing area, NH₄⁺ and NO₃^- uptake kinetics, and the expression of ammonium and nitrate transporter genes in Pinus massoniana seedlings under different levels of N deposition. These data revealed that EMF inoculation led to increased root dry weight, activity, and absorbing area. The NH₄⁺ and NO₃^- uptake kinetics in seedlings conformed to the Michaelis-Menten equation, and uptake rates declined with increasing levels of N addition, with NH₄⁺ uptake rates remaining higher than NO₃^- uptake rates for all tested concentrations. EMF inoculation was associated with higher V_max values than were observed for non-mycorrhizal plants. Nitrogen addition resulted in the upregulation of genes in the AMT1 family and the downregulation of genes in the NRT family. EMF inoculation under the N60 and N90 treatment conditions resulted in the increased expression of each of both these gene families. NH₄⁺ and NO₃^- uptake kinetics were also positively correlated with associated transporter gene expression in P. massoniana roots. Together, these data offer a theoretical foundation for EMF inoculation under conditions of increased N deposition associated with climate change in an effort to improve N absorption and transport rates through the regulation of key nitrogen transporter genes, thereby enhancing N utilization efficiency and promoting plant growth. Synopsis: EMF could enhance the efficiency of N utilization and promote the growth of Pinus massoniana under conditions of increased N deposition.

Abundance and variation of gaseous NH3 in relation with inorganic fertilizers and soil moisture during Kharif and Rabi season

In an agricultural country like India, inorganic fertilizers are the major contributors of atmospheric NH₃ in rural areas affecting soil, vegetation and water bodies. In this study, day-night and seasonal variation of ammonia emissions were measured from July 2017 to June 2018 during Kharif and Rabi crop seasons at a rural agricultural site in Jhajjar district of Haryana. Also, NH₃ emission inventory is prepared for the amount of fertilizers applied during its basal and top dressing. NH₃ concentrations were noticed significantly lower after basal dressing of DAP fertilizers as compared to the concentrations after top dressing of urea. NH₃ concentration in air increased with decrease in water saturation of the soil. NH₃ emission was recorded as 1.4 to 45.2, 63.1 to 190.9, and 98.9 to 187.5 μg m^-3 during sowing, fertilizer addition, and grain filling stages, respectively, in Kharif season. Apart from these crop stages, NH₃ was measured as 56.8 to 249.5 μg m^-3 during crop residue burning period. On the other hand, NH₃ emissions ranged from 22.9 to 68.4, 59.4 to 104.71, 26.3 to 56.0, 48.2 to 147.2, and 21.5 to 80.4 μg m^-3 during sowing, crown root initiation (CRI), panicle initiation, grain filling, and maturity crop, respectively, in Rabi season. The average NH₃ concentrations during Kharif season (125.3 μg m^-3) were significantly greater than the concentrations during Rabi season (51.8 μg m^-3). However, a reduction in the NH₃ values was observed in the period between Kharif and Rabi seasons, which could be attributed to the wet deposition during monsoon and gas to particle conversion due to less temperature conditions during the periods.

Challenges in measuring nitrogen isotope signatures in inorganic nitrogen forms: An interlaboratory comparison of three common measurement approaches

RATIONALE

Stable isotope approaches are increasingly applied to better understand the cycling of inorganic nitrogen (Ni ) forms, key limiting nutrients in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. A systematic comparison of the accuracy and precision of the most commonly used methods to analyze δ15 N in NO3 - and NH4 + and interlaboratory comparison tests to evaluate the comparability of isotope results between laboratories are, however, still lacking.

METHODS

Here, we conducted an interlaboratory comparison involving 10 European laboratories to compare different methods and laboratory performance to measure δ15 N in NO3 - and NH4 + . The approaches tested were (a) microdiffusion (MD), (b) chemical conversion (CM), which transforms Ni to either N2 O (CM-N2 O) or N2 (CM-N2 ), and (c) the denitrifier (DN) methods.

RESULTS

The study showed that standards in their single forms were reasonably replicated by the different methods and laboratories, with laboratories applying CM-N2 O performing superior for both NO3 - and NH4 + , followed by DN. Laboratories using MD significantly underestimated the "true" values due to incomplete recovery and also those using CM-N2 showed issues with isotope fractionation. Most methods and laboratories underestimated the at%15 N of Ni of labeled standards in their single forms, but relative errors were within maximal 6% deviation from the real value and therefore acceptable. The results showed further that MD is strongly biased by nonspecificity. The results of the environmental samples were generally highly variable, with standard deviations (SD) of up to ± 8.4‰ for NO3 - and ± 32.9‰ for NH4 + ; SDs within laboratories were found to be considerably lower (on average 3.1‰). The variability could not be connected to any single factor but next to errors due to blank contamination, isotope normalization, and fractionation, and also matrix effects and analytical errors have to be considered.

CONCLUSIONS

The inconsistency among all methods and laboratories raises concern about reported δ15 N values particularly from environmental samples.

The Effects of Paroxetine on Benthic Microbial Food Web and Nitrogen Transformation in River Sediments

Paroxetine is a common pharmaceutical to treat depression and has been found to pose threats to aquatic organisms. However, little is known about the effects of paroxetine on the nutrient cycle in aquatic environments. Therefore, DNA metabarcoding is used in this study to analyze the effects of paroxetine on multi-trophic microorganisms and nitrogen transformation in river sediments. Although paroxetine has no significant effect on the diversity of microbenthos, changes in benthic nitrogen-converting bacteria are consistent with the change in the various forms of nitrogen in the sediment, indicating that paroxetine affects the nitrogen conversion process by affecting nitrogen-converting bacteria. In addition, it is found that paroxetine has the ability to influence nitrogen transformation in an indirect way by affecting the trophic transfer efficiency of higher trophic levels (meiofauna and protozoa, protozoa and protozoa), subsequently affecting the growth of nitrogen-converting bacteria through a top-down mechanism (i.e., predation).The results show that paroxetine affects nitrogen transformation directly by affecting nitrogen-converting bacteria and indirectly through top-down effects, emphasizing that the assessment of paroxetine's ecological risks should consider species within different trophic levels.

Reconstruction of Daily Courses of SO42−, NO3−, NH4+ Concentrations in Precipitation from Cumulative Samples

It is important to study precipitation chemistry to comprehend both atmospheric and environmental processes. The aim of this study was the reconstruction of daily concentration patterns of major ions in precipitation from samples exposed for longer and differing time periods. We explored sulphates (SO42−), nitrates (NO3−) and ammonium (NH4+) ions measured in precipitation within a nation-wide atmospheric deposition monitoring network in the Czech Republic during 1980–2020. We visualised the long-term trends at selected individual years for four stations, Praha 4-Libuš (LIB), Svratouch (SVR), Rudolice v Horách (RUD) and Souš (SOU), differing in geographical location and reflecting different environments. We found anticipated time trends reflecting the emission patterns of the precursors, i.e., sharp decreases in SO42−, milder decreases in NO3− and steady states in NH4+ concentrations in precipitation. Statistically significant decreasing time trends in SO42− and NO3− concentrations in precipitation between 1990 and 2015 were revealed for the LIB and SVR sites. Spring maxima in April were found for all major ions at the LIB site and for NO3− for the SVR site, for both past and current samples, whereas no distinct seasonal behaviour was recorded for NH4+ at the RUD and SO42− at the SVR sites. By applying Bayesian modelling and the Integrated Nested Laplace Approximation approach, we were able to reconstruct the daily patterns of SO42−, NO3− and NH4+ concentrations in precipitation, which might be further utilised for a wide range of tasks, including comparison of magnitudes and shapes between stations, grouping the decomposed daily data into the ecologically motivated time periods, as well as for logical checks of sampling and measurement reliability.

Stable nitrogen and carbon isotope compositions in plant-soil systems under different land-use types in a red soil region, Southeast China

Background

Stable N isotope compositions in plant-soil systems have been widely used to indicate soil N transformation and translocation processes in ecosystems. However, soil N processes and nitrate ( NO 3 - ) loss potential under different land-use types are short of systematic comparison in the red soil region of Southeast China.

Methods

In the present study, the stable N and C isotope compositions (δ ¹⁵N and δ ¹³C) of soil and leaf were analyzed to indicate soil N transformation processes, and the soil to plant ¹⁵N enrichment factor (EF) was used to compare soil NO 3 - loss potential under different land-use types, including an abandoned agricultural land, a natural pure forest without understory, and a natural pure forest with a simple understory.

Results

The foliar δ ¹⁵N value (-0.8‰) in the abandoned agricultural land was greater than those of the forest lands (ranged from -2.2‰ to -10.8‰). In the abandoned agricultural land, δ ¹⁵N values of soil organic nitrogen (SON) increased from 0.8‰ to 5.7‰ and δ ¹³C values of soil organic carbon (SOC) decreased from -22.7‰ to -25.9‰ with increasing soil depth from 0-70 cm, mainly resulting from SON mineralization, soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, and C₄ plant input. In the soils below 70 cm depth, δ ¹⁵N values of SON (mean 4.9‰) were likely affected by microbial assimilation of ¹⁵N-depleted NO 3 - . The variations in δ ¹⁵N values of soil profiles under the two forests were similar, but the EF values were significant different between the pure forest with a simple understory (-10.0‰) and the forest without understory (-5.5‰).

Conclusions

These results suggest that soil to plant ¹⁵N enrichment factor have a great promise to compare soil NO 3 - loss potential among different ecosystems.

Delineation of mechanistic approaches of rhizosphere microorganisms facilitated plant health and resilience under challenging conditions

Sustainable agriculture demands the balanced use of inorganic, organic, and microbial biofertilizers for enhanced plant productivity and soil fertility. Plant growth-enhancing rhizospheric bacteria can be an excellent biotechnological tool to augment plant productivity in different agricultural setups. We present an overview of microbial mechanisms which directly or indirectly contribute to plant growth, health, and development under highly variable environmental conditions. The rhizosphere microbiomes promote plant growth, suppress pathogens and nematodes, prime plants immunity, and alleviate abiotic stress. The prospective of beneficial rhizobacteria to facilitate plant growth is of primary importance, particularly under abiotic and biotic stresses. Such microbe can promote plant health, tolerate stress, even remediate soil pollutants, and suppress phytopathogens. Providing extra facts and a superior understanding of microbial traits underlying plant growth promotion can stir the development of microbial-based innovative solutions for the betterment of agriculture. Furthermore, the application of novel scientific approaches for facilitating the design of crop-specific microbial biofertilizers is discussed. In this context, we have highlighted the exercise of "multi-omics" methods for assessing the microbiome's impact on plant growth, health, and overall fitness via analyzing biochemical, physiological, and molecular facets. Furthermore, the role of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) based genome alteration and nanotechnology for improving the agronomic performance and rhizosphere microbiome is also briefed. In a nutshell, the paper summarizes the recent vital molecular processes that underlie the different beneficial plant-microbe interactions imperative for enhancing plant fitness and resilience under-challenged agriculture.

Retention of deposited ammonium and nitrate and its impact on the global forest carbon sink

The impacts of enhanced nitrogen (N) deposition on the global forest carbon (C) sink and other ecosystem services may depend on whether N is deposited in reduced (mainly as ammonium) or oxidized forms (mainly as nitrate) and the subsequent fate of each. However, the fates of the two key reactive N forms and their contributions to forest C sinks are unclear. Here, we analyze results from 13 ecosystem-scale paired ¹⁵N-labelling experiments in temperate, subtropical, and tropical forests. Results show that total ecosystem N retention is similar for ammonium and nitrate, but plants take up more labelled nitrate ([Formula: see text]%) ([Formula: see text]) than ammonium ([Formula: see text]%) while soils retain more ammonium ([Formula: see text]%) than nitrate ([Formula: see text]%). We estimate that the N deposition-induced C sink in forests in the 2010s  is [Formula: see text] Pg C yr^-1, higher than previous estimates because of a larger role for oxidized N and greater rates of global N deposition.

Application of Corn Straw and Woody Peat to Improve the Absorption and Utilization of 15N-Urea by Maize

Increasing nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency has become an environmental and economic demand in order to minimize losses of nitrogen and maximize the output from nitrogen added. The application of organic amendments with N fertilizers could be proposed as an important economic and environmental practice for improving N fertilizer use. A two-year field experiment was carried out using the 15N tracer technique to study the impact of corn straw and woody peat application on uptake and utilization of N fertilizer by maize plant. Three treatments were set up: CK (15N labeled urea alone), CS (15N labeled urea + crushed corn straw) and WP (15N labeled urea+ crushed woody peat). The results showed that, as compared to CK, both straw and peat treatments led to (i) an increase in yield of maize, 15N urea utilization rate, and residual 15N urea remained in soil by 11.20% and 19.47%, 18.62% and 58.99%, 41.77% and 59.45%, respectively, but (ii) a decrease in the total loss rate by 6.21% and 16.83% (p < 0.05), respectively over the two seasons. Moreover, the significantly highest effect was recorded with woody peat application rather than that with corn straw. Our study suggests that corn straw and woody peat can be used as organic fertilizers to increase maize yields, promote nitrogen fertilizer balance sheet, reduce the leaching of N fertilizer into the subsurface soil layer, and facilitate the further absorption and utilization of soil residual nitrogen. Therefore, the application of humified organic material play a crucial role in N utilization efficiency enhancement.

Photosynthetic product allocations of Pinus massoniana seedlings inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi along a nitrogen addition gradient

Quantifying the allocation of photosynthetic products among different carbon (C) pools is critical for understanding and predicting plant C turnover response to climate change. A field experiment with ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) and nitrogen (N) was established to investigate the effects on allocation of photosynthetic products in Pinus massoniana (Lamb.) seedlings given increased N deposition. Seedlings were subjected to N addition and symbiosis with EMF, and the short-term allocation of a ¹³C photosynthetic pulse into leaves, branches, stems, roots, and soil was traced. Photosynthetic rate and root respiration were measured. It was found that N addition changed the allocation pattern of photosynthetic products in various organs of P. massoniana. Furthermore, N addition, mycorrhizal symbiosis, and interaction of N and EMF, all increased the amount of C produced by photosynthesis. N application less than 60 kg N hm^-1 a^-1 could promote the transfer and allocation of photosynthetic products in P. massoniana organs, which peaks at 60 kg N hm^-1 a^-1, and the highest N treatment began to decrease at 90 kg N hm^-1 a^-1. EMF inoculation could expand the absorption area of plant roots to obtain more nutrients and synthesize more C and N compounds for promoting the growth of itself and the host plant, improving the net photosynthetic rate and the distribution of C produced by photosynthesis in various organs. This forms a benign C and N cycle, thereby reducing the effect of high N addition on plants. The optimal N addition concentration was 60 kg N hm^-1 a^-1, and the optimal EMF was Pt, which provides a theoretical basis for inoculating EMF during increasing N deposition in the future climate change scenario. This enables plants to distribute more photosynthetic products to their roots, thus affecting their own C distribution for promoting growth.

Meta-QTL Analysis in Rice and Cross-Genome Talk of the Genomic Regions Controlling Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Cereal Crops Revealing Phylogenetic Relationship

The phenomenal increase in the use of nitrogenous fertilizers coupled with poor nitrogen use efficiency is among the most important threats to the environment, economic, and social health. During the last 2 decades, a number of genomic regions associated with nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and related traits have been reported by different research groups, but none of the stable and major effect QTL have been utilized in the marker-assisted introgression/pyramiding program. Compiling the data available in the literature could be very useful in identifying stable and major effect genomic regions associated with the root and NUE-related trait improving the rice grain yield. In the present study, we performed meta-QTL analysis on 1,330 QTL from 29 studies published in the past 2 decades. A total of 76 MQTL with a stable effect over different genetic backgrounds and environments were identified. The significant reduction in the confidence interval of the MQTL compared to the initial QTL resulted in the identification of annotated and putative candidate genes related to the traits considered in the present study. A hot spot region associated with correlated traits on chr 1, 4, and 8 and candidate genes associated with nitrate transporters, nitrogen content, and ammonium uptake on chromosomes 2, 4, 6, and 8 have been identified. The identified MQTL, putative candidate genes, and their orthologues were validated on our previous studies conducted on rice and wheat. The research-based interventions such as improving nitrogen use efficiency via identification of major genomic regions and candidate genes can be a plausible, simple, and low-cost solution to address the challenges of the crop improvement program.

A roadmap of plant membrane transporters in arbuscular mycorrhizal and legume-rhizobium symbioses

Most land plants live in close contact with beneficial soil microbes: the majority of land plant species establish symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, while most legumes, the third largest plant family, can form a symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia. These microbes contribute to plant nutrition via endosymbiotic processes that require modulating the expression and function of plant transporter systems. The efficient contribution of these symbionts involves precisely controlled integration of transport, which is enabled by the adaptability and plasticity of their transporters. Advances in our understanding of these systems, driven by functional genomics research, are rapidly filling the gap in knowledge about plant membrane transport involved in these plant-microbe interactions. In this review, we synthesize recent findings associated with different stages of these symbioses, from the pre-symbiotic stage to nutrient exchange, and describe the role of host transport systems in both mycorrhizal and legume-rhizobia symbioses.

Dynamics of Soil Microbial N-Cycling Strategies in Response to Cadmium Stress

Globally increasing trace metal contamination of soils requires a better mechanistic understanding of metal-stress impacts on microbially mediated nutrient cycling. Herein, a 5-month laboratory experiment was employed to assess the effects of cadmium (Cd) on soil microbial N-cycling processes and associated functional gene abundance, with and without urea amendment. In non-N-amended soils, Cd progressively stimulated microbial populations for N acquisition from initial dissolved organic N (DON) to later recalcitrant organic N. The acceleration of N catabolism was synchronously coupled with C catabolism resulting in increased CO₂/N₂O fluxes and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) contents. The abundance of microbes deemed inefficient in N catabolism was gradually repressed after an initial stimulation period. We posit that enhanced exergonic N processes diminished the need for endergonic activities as a survival strategy for N communities experiencing metal stress. With urea amendment, Cd exhibited an initial stimulation effect on soil nitrification and a later a promotion effect on mineralization, along with an increase in the associated microbial populations. In N-amended soils, Cd accelerated N/C transformation processes, but decreased N₂O and CO₂ fluxes by 19 and 14%, respectively. This implies that under eutrophic conditions, Cd synchronously altered microbial C/N metabolism from a dominance of catabolic to anabolic processes. These results infer a nutrient-based adjustment of microbial N-cycling strategies to enhance their metal resistance.

Impact of fertilization with reducing in nitrogen and phosphorous application on growth, yield and biomass accumulation of rice (Oryza sativa L.) under a dual cropping system

The current farming system in China is heavily reliant on synthetic fertilizers, which adversely affect soil quality and crop production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of different nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) fertilizer application rate on the growth, yield, and yield components of rice cultivars in the Binyang, Beiliu and Liucheng sites of southern China in the early (March to July) and late season (August to December). The study consisted of three fertilization regimes—CK (N₀P₀); N₁₈₀P₉₀ (180 kg N + 90 kg P₂O₅ ha⁻¹) and N₉₀P₄₅ (90 kg N ha⁻¹ + 45 kg P₂O₅)—conducted at each of three different experimental sites with four cultivars (Baixang 139, Y Liangyou 1, Guiyu 9, and Teyou 582). Results showed that the leaf area index (LAI) was 38.8% found higher in Guiyu 9 compared with Baxiang at reduced fertilization (N₉₀P₄₅). N₉₀P₄₅ resulted higher dry matter production at the heading (9411.2 kg ha⁻¹) and maturity (15319.5 kg ha⁻¹) stages in Teyou 582 at Beiliu. Fertilization (N₁₈₀P₉₀) had higher effective panicle number (4,158,800 panicle ha⁻¹) and grains panicle⁻¹ (113.84 grains) compared with other treatments. Teyou 582 treated with N₉₀P₄₅ and Y Liangyou 1 treated with N₁₈₀P₉₀ improved seed setting rate average by 82.91% and 72.17% compared with other treatments at Beiliu in both seasons, respectively. N₀P₀ and N₉₀P₄₅ increased the thousand-grain weight (TGW) of Y Liangyou 1 at Binyang (27.07 g) and Liucheng (27.84 g) during the early and late seasons, respectively. In Beiliu, the N₉₀P₄₅ treatment (6611.7 kg ha⁻¹) of Teyou 582 increased grain yield compared with other treatments. Overall, our results suggested that reducing N and P at the ratio of 90:45 kg ha⁻¹ in Teyou 582 and Y Liangyou 1 could increase rice grain yield and yield components.

Alkaline air: changing perspectives on nitrogen and air pollution in an ammonia-rich world

Ammonia and ammonium have received less attention than other forms of air pollution, with limited progress in controlling emissions at UK, European and global scales. By contrast, these compounds have been of significant past interest to science and society, the recollection of which can inform future strategies. Sal ammoniac (nūshādir, nao sha) is found to have been extremely valuable in long-distance trade (ca AD 600-1150) from Egypt and China, where 6-8 kg N could purchase a human life, while air pollution associated with nūshādir collection was attributed to this nitrogen form. Ammonia was one of the keys to alchemy-seen as an early experimental mesocosm to understand the world-and later became of interest as 'alkaline air' within the eighteenth century development of pneumatic chemistry. The same economic, chemical and environmental properties are found to make ammonia and ammonium of huge relevance today. Successful control of acidifying SO₂ and NO_x emissions leaves atmospheric NH₃ in excess in many areas, contributing to particulate matter (PM_2.5) formation, while leading to a new significance of alkaline air, with adverse impacts on natural ecosystems. Investigations of epiphytic lichens and bog ecosystems show how the alkalinity effect of NH₃ may explain its having three to five times the adverse effect of ammonium and nitrate, respectively. It is concluded that future air pollution policy should no longer neglect ammonia. Progress is likely to be mobilized by emphasizing the lost economic value of global N emissions ($200 billion yr^-1), as part of developing the circular economy for sustainable nitrogen management. Dynamics of ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers in response to compost addition in black soil, Northeast China

Organic fertilizer application could have an impact on the nitrogen cycle mediated by microorganisms in arable soils. However, the dynamics of soil ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers in response to compost addition are less understood. In this study, we examined the effect of four compost application rates (0, 11.25, 22.5 and 45 t/ha) on soil ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers at soybean seedling, flowering and mature stage in a field experiment in Northeast China. As revealed by quantitative PCR, compost addition significantly enhanced the abundance of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) at seedling stage, while the abundance of ammonia oxidizing archaea was unaffected across the growing season. The abundance of genes involved in denitrification (nirS, nirK and nosZ) were generally increased along with compost rate at seedling and flowering stages, but not in mature stage. The non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis revealed that moderate and high level of compost addition consistently induced shift in AOB and nirS containing denitrifers community composition across the growing season. Among AOB lineages, Nitrosospira cluster 3a gradually decreased along with the compost rate across the growing season, while Nitrosomonas exhibited an opposite trend. Network analysis indicated that the complexity of AOB and nirS containing denitrifiers network gradually increased along with the compost rate. Our findings highlighted the positive effect of compost addition on the abundance of ammonia oxidizers and denitrifiers and emphasized that compost addition play crucial roles in shaping their community compositions and co-occurrence networks in black soil of Northeast China.

Study of nitrogen pollution in the Republic of North Macedonia by moss biomonitoring and Kjeldahl method

In the summer of 2005 and 2010, moss samples were collected from 72 sampling sites evenly distributed all over the territory of Republic of North Macedonia. Kjeldahl method was used to determine the nitrogen content in the samples. Descriptive statistics and distribution maps were prepared. Data obtained from these two surveys were compared, and additional comparison was done with data obtained from similar studies in the South-Eastern European countries and Finland as a clean area. The median value of N content in the samples collected in 2005 is 1.21%, varies from 0.70% to 1.54%, while the content of N in samples collected in 2010 ranges between 0.68% and 1.75% with the median value of 1.06%. High contents of N were found in the Northern and Central parts of the country mainly as a result of agricultural activities, industry and traffic.

Organic bases catalyze the synthesis of urea from ammonium salts derived from recovered environmental ammonia

Ammonia from sewage and livestock manure is a major environmental pollutant. To consume environmental ammonia, we investigated the organic base-catalyzed synthesis of urea. 1,8-Diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) catalyzes the conversion of ammonium carbamate to urea in 35% yield at 100 °C. Moreover, DBU also converts other ammonium salts into urea. A mechanism that involves nucleophilic attack of ammonia following ion exchange is proposed.

Responses of forest ecosystems in Europe to decreasing nitrogen deposition

Average nitrogen (N) deposition across Europe has declined since the 1990s. This resulted in decreased N inputs to forest ecosystems especially in Central and Western Europe where deposition levels are highest. While the impact of atmospheric N deposition on forests has been receiving much attention for decades, ecosystem responses to the decline in N inputs received less attention. Here, we review observational studies reporting on trends in a number of indicators: soil acidification and eutrophication, understory vegetation, tree nutrition (foliar element concentrations) as well as tree vitality and growth in response to decreasing N deposition across Europe. Ecosystem responses varied with limited decrease in soil solution nitrate concentrations and potentially also foliar N concentrations. There was no large-scale response in understory vegetation, tree growth, or vitality. Experimental studies support the observation of a more distinct reaction of soil solution and foliar element concentrations to changes in N supply compared to the three other parameters. According to the most likely scenarios, further decrease of N deposition will be limited. We hypothesize that this expected decline will not cause major responses of the parameters analysed in this study. Instead, future changes might be more strongly controlled by the development of N pools accumulated within forest soils, affected by climate change and forest management.

Options for keeping the food system within environmental limits

The food system is a major driver of climate change, changes in land use, depletion of freshwater resources, and pollution of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems through excessive nitrogen and phosphorus inputs. Here we show that between 2010 and 2050, as a result of expected changes in population and income levels, the environmental effects of the food system could increase by 50-90% in the absence of technological changes and dedicated mitigation measures, reaching levels that are beyond the planetary boundaries that define a safe operating space for humanity. We analyse several options for reducing the environmental effects of the food system, including dietary changes towards healthier, more plant-based diets, improvements in technologies and management, and reductions in food loss and waste. We find that no single measure is enough to keep these effects within all planetary boundaries simultaneously, and that a synergistic combination of measures will be needed to sufficiently mitigate the projected increase in environmental pressures.

Natural forcing of the North Atlantic nitrogen cycle in the Anthropocene

Human alteration of the global nitrogen cycle intensified over the 1900s. Model simulations suggest that large swaths of the open ocean, including the North Atlantic and the western Pacific, have already been affected by anthropogenic nitrogen through atmospheric transport and deposition. Here we report an ∼130-year-long record of the ¹⁵N/¹⁴N of skeleton-bound organic matter in a coral from the outer reef of Bermuda, which provides a test of the hypothesis that anthropogenic atmospheric nitrogen has significantly augmented the nitrogen supply to the open North Atlantic surface ocean. The Bermuda ¹⁵N/¹⁴N record does not show a long-term decline in the Anthropocene of the amplitude predicted by model simulations or observed in a western Pacific coral ¹⁵N/¹⁴N record. Rather, the decadal variations in the Bermuda ¹⁵N/¹⁴N record appear to be driven by the North Atlantic Oscillation, most likely through changes in the formation rate of Subtropical Mode Water. Given that anthropogenic nitrogen emissions have been decreasing in North America since the 1990s, this study suggests that in the coming decades, the open North Atlantic will remain minimally affected by anthropogenic nitrogen deposition.

A bound reaction intermediate sheds light on the mechanism of nitrogenase

Reduction of N₂ by nitrogenases occurs at an organometallic iron cofactor that commonly also contains either molybdenum or vanadium. The well-characterized resting state of the cofactor does not bind substrate, so its mode of action remains enigmatic. Carbon monoxide was recently found to replace a bridging sulfide, but the mechanistic relevance was unclear. Here we report the structural analysis of vanadium nitrogenase with a bound intermediate, interpreted as a μ²-bridging, protonated nitrogen that implies the site and mode of substrate binding to the cofactor. Binding results in a flip of amino acid glutamine 176, which hydrogen-bonds the ligand and creates a holding position for the displaced sulfide. The intermediate likely represents state E₆ or E₇ of the Thorneley-Lowe model and provides clues to the remainder of the catalytic cycle.

Biomonitors of atmospheric nitrogen deposition: potential uses and limitations

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition is the third largest cause of global biodiversity loss, with rates that have more than doubled over the past century. This is especially threatening for tropical regions where the deposition may soon exceed 25 kg of N ha-1 year-1, well above the threshold for physiological damage of 12-20 kg of N ha-1 year-1, depending on plant species and nitrogenous compound. It is thus urgent to monitor these regions where the most diverse biotas occur. However, most studies have been conducted in Europe, the USA and recently in China. This review presents the case for the potential use of biological organisms to monitor nitrogen deposition, with emphasis on tropical plants. We first present an overview of atmospheric chemistry and the nitrogen metabolism of potential biomonitors, followed by a framework for monitoring nitrogen deposition based on the simultaneous use of various functional groups. In particular, the tissue nitrogen content responds to the rate of deposition, especially for mosses, whose nitrogen content increases by 1‰ per kilogram of N ha-1 year-1. The isotopic signature, δ15N, is a useful indicator of the nitrogen source, as the slightly negative values (e.g. 5‰) of plants from natural environments can become very negative (-11.2‰) in sites with agricultural and husbandry activities, but very positive (13.3‰) in urban environments with high vehicular activity. Mosses are good biomonitors for wet deposition and atmospheric epiphytes for dry deposition. In turn, the nitrogen saturation of ecosystems can be monitored with trees whose isotopic values increase with saturation. Although given ecophysiological limitations of different organisms, particular studies should be conducted in each area of interest to determine the most suitable biomonitors. Overall, biomonitors can provide an integrative approach for characterizing nitrogen deposition in regions where the deployment of automated instruments or passive monitoring is not feasible or can be complementary.

A process-oriented hydro-biogeochemical model enabling simulation of gaseous carbon and nitrogen emissions and hydrologic nitrogen losses from a subtropical catchment

Quantification of nitrogen losses and net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from catchments is essential for evaluating the sustainability of ecosystems. However, the hydrologic processes without lateral flows hinder the application of biogeochemical models to this challenging task. To solve this issue, we developed a coupled hydrological and biogeochemical model, Catchment Nutrients Management Model - DeNitrification-DeComposition Model (CNMM-DNDC), to include both vertical and lateral mass flows. By incorporating the core biogeochemical processes (including decomposition, nitrification, denitrification and fermentation) of the DNDC into the spatially distributed hydrologic framework of the CNMM, the simulation of lateral water flows and their influences on nitrogen transportation can be realized. The CNMM-DNDC was then calibrated and validated in a small subtropical catchment belonged to Yanting station with comprehensive field observations. Except for the calibration of water flows (surface runoff and leaching water) in 2005, stream discharges of water and nitrate in 2007, the model validations of soil temperature, soil moisture, crop yield, water flows in 2006 and associated nitrate loss, fluxes of methane, ammonia, nitric oxide and nitrous oxide, and stream discharges of water and nitrate in 2008 were statistically in good agreement with the observations. Meanwhile, our initial simulation of the catchment showed scientific predictions. For instance, it revealed the following: (i) dominant ammonia volatilization among the losses of nitrogenous gases (accounting for 11-21% of the applied annual fertilizer nitrogen in croplands); (ii) hotspots of nitrate leaching near the main stream; and (iii) a net GHG sink function of the catchment. These results implicate the model's promising capability of predicting ecosystem productivity, hydrologic nitrogen loads, losses of gaseous nitrogen and emissions of GHGs, which could be used to provide strategies for establishing sustainable catchments. In addition, the model's capability would be further proved by applying in other catchments with different backgrounds.

Elevated CO2 Induces Root Defensive Mechanisms in Tomato Plants When Dealing with Ammonium Toxicity

An adequate carbon supply is fundamental for plants to thrive under ammonium stress. In this work, we studied the mechanisms involved in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) response to ammonium toxicity when grown under ambient or elevated CO2 conditions (400 or 800 p.p.m. CO2). Tomato roots were observed to be the primary organ dealing with ammonium nutrition. We therefore analyzed nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) metabolism in the roots, integrating the physiological response with transcriptomic regulation. Elevated levels of CO2 preferentially stimulated root growth despite the high ammonium content. The induction of anaplerotic enzymes from the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle led to enhanced amino acid synthesis under ammonium nutrition. Furthermore, the root transcriptional response to ammonium toxicity was improved by CO2-enriched conditions, leading to higher expression of stress-related genes, as well as enhanced modulation of genes related to signaling, transcription, transport and hormone metabolism. Tomato roots exposed to ammonium stress also showed a defense-like transcriptional response according to the modulation of genes related to detoxification and secondary metabolism, involving principally terpenoid and phenolic compounds. These results indicate that increasing C supply allowed the co-ordinated regulation of root defense mechanisms when dealing with ammonium toxicity.

Extreme enrichment in atmospheric 15N15N

Molecular nitrogen (N₂) comprises three-quarters of Earth's atmosphere and significant portions of other planetary atmospheres. We report a 19 per mil (‰) excess of ¹⁵N¹⁵N in air relative to a random distribution of nitrogen isotopes, an enrichment that is 10 times larger than what isotopic equilibration in the atmosphere allows. Biological experiments show that the main sources and sinks of N₂ yield much smaller proportions of ¹⁵N¹⁵N in N₂. Electrical discharge experiments, however, establish ¹⁵N¹⁵N excesses of up to +23‰. We argue that ¹⁵N¹⁵N accumulates in the atmosphere because of gas-phase chemistry in the thermosphere (>100 km altitude) on time scales comparable to those of biological cycling. The atmospheric ¹⁵N¹⁵N excess therefore reflects a planetary-scale balance of biogeochemical and atmospheric nitrogen chemistry, one that may also exist on other planets.

Symbiosis constraints: Strong mycobiont control limits nutrient response in lichens

Symbioses such as lichens are potentially threatened by drastic environmental changes. We used the lichen Peltigera aphthosa-a symbiosis between a fungus (mycobiont), a green alga (Coccomyxa sp.), and N2-fixing cyanobacteria (Nostoc sp.)-as a model organism to assess the effects of environmental perturbations in nitrogen (N) or phosphorus (P). Growth, carbon (C) and N stable isotopes, CNP concentrations, and specific markers were analyzed in whole thalli and the partners after 4 months of daily nutrient additions in the field. Thallus N was 40% higher in N-fertilized thalli, amino acid concentrations were twice as high, while fungal chitin but not ergosterol was lower. Nitrogen also resulted in a thicker algal layer and density, and a higher δ13C abundance in all three partners. Photosynthesis was not affected by either N or P. Thallus growth increased with light dose independent of fertilization regime. We conclude that faster algal growth compared to fungal lead to increased competition for light and CO 2 among the Coccomyxa cells, and for C between alga and fungus, resulting in neither photosynthesis nor thallus growth responded to N fertilization. This suggests that the symbiotic lifestyle of lichens may prevent them from utilizing nutrient abundance to increase C assimilation and growth.

Biochar amendment reduces paddy soil nitrogen leaching but increases net global warming potential in Ningxia irrigation, China

The efficacy of biochar as an environmentally friendly agent for non-point source and climate change mitigation remains uncertain. Our goal was to test the impact of biochar amendment on paddy rice nitrogen (N) uptake, soil N leaching, and soil CH4 and N2O fluxes in northwest China. Biochar was applied at four rates (0, 4.5, 9 and13.5 t ha-1 yr-1). Biochar amendment significantly increased rice N uptake, soil total N concentration and the abundance of soil ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), but it significantly reduced the soil NO3--N concentration and soil bulk density. Biochar significantly reduced NO3--N and NH4+-N leaching. The C2 and C3 treatments significantly increased the soil CH4 flux and reduced the soil N2O flux, leading to significantly increased net global warming potential (GWP). Soil NO3--N rather than NH4+-N was the key integrator of the soil CH4 and N2O fluxes. Our results indicate that a shift in abundance of the AOA community and increased rice N uptake are closely linked to the reduced soil NO3--N concentration under biochar amendment. Furthermore, soil NO3--N availability plays an important role in regulating soil inorganic N leaching and net GWP in rice paddies in northwest China.

Nitrogen deposition to forest ecosystems with focus on its different forms

Time trends and spatial patterns for wet nitrogen deposition in view of its reduced and oxidized forms for Czech forests are presented. Time trends in NH₄⁺, NO₃^-, and N-NH₄⁺/N-NO₃^- ratio at 15 sites in 1990-2014 were analysed using the Mann-Kendal test. Changes in spatial patterns derived from results of 43 sites in 2005-2014 were also assessed. Our results indicated a slow but convincing change in favour of NH₄⁺. The N-NH₄⁺/N-NO₃^- ratio, both in precipitation and wet deposition, has been increasing steadily, reflecting the changes in reduced and oxidized forms of nitrogen emissions. A similar change has been observed in some other regions and might have negative impacts on ecosystems.

Exploring a United States Maize Cellulose Biofuel Scenario Using an Integrated Energy and Agricultural Markets Solution Approach

Biofuel feedstock production in the United States (US) is an emergent environmental nutrient management issue, whose exploration can benefit from a multi-scale and multimedia systems modeling approach that explicitly addresses diverging stakeholder interests. In the present analysis, energy and agricultural markets models and a hybrid process-based agricultural production model are integrated to explore the potential environmental consequences of increased biofuel production from maize grain and stover feedstocks. Yield and cropland reallocation projections are simulated for 20 agricultural crops at a 12km grid resolution across the continental United States. Our results are presented across multiple, spatially expanding domains, and our results for the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB) are compared to previous studies. Our analysis highlights the critical continuing role of agricultural and crop science to provide physically plausible estimates and physical process drivers of yield increases, and suggests that while the UMRB is the target of the greatest agricultural changes under our scenarios, its response does not necessarily reflect the interests of a broad stakeholder community.

Simulated effects of nitrogen saturation on the global carbon budget using the IBIS model

Over the past 100 years, human activity has greatly changed the rate of atmospheric N (nitrogen) deposition in terrestrial ecosystems, resulting in N saturation in some regions of the world. The contribution of N saturation to the global carbon budget remains uncertain due to the complicated nature of C-N (carbon-nitrogen) interactions and diverse geography. Although N deposition is included in most terrestrial ecosystem models, the effect of N saturation is frequently overlooked. In this study, the IBIS (Integrated BIosphere Simulator) was used to simulate the global-scale effects of N saturation during the period 1961-2009. The results of this model indicate that N saturation reduced global NPP (Net Primary Productivity) and NEP (Net Ecosystem Productivity) by 0.26 and 0.03 Pg C yr^-1, respectively. The negative effects of N saturation on carbon sequestration occurred primarily in temperate forests and grasslands. In response to elevated CO₂ levels, global N turnover slowed due to increased biomass growth, resulting in a decline in soil mineral N. These changes in N cycling reduced the impact of N saturation on the global carbon budget. However, elevated N deposition in certain regions may further alter N saturation and C-N coupling.

Towards a better spatial quantification of nitrogen deposition: A case study for Czech forests

The quantification of atmospheric deposition flux is essential for assessment of its impact on ecosystems. We present an advanced approach for the estimation of the spatial pattern of atmospheric nitrogen deposition flux over the Czech forests, collating all available measured data and model results. The aim of the presented study is to provide an improved, more complete, more reliable and more realistic estimate of the spatial pattern of nitrogen deposition flux over one country. This has so far usually been based on measurements of ambient NOx concentrations as dry deposition proxy, and [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] in precipitation as wet deposition proxy. For estimation of unmeasured species contributing to dry deposition, we used the CAMx Eulerian photochemical dispersion model, coupled with the Aladin regional numeric weather prediction model. The contribution of fog and dissolved organic nitrogen was estimated using a geostatistical data driven model. We prepared individual maps for particular components applying the most relevant approach and then merged all layers to obtain a final map representing the best estimate of nitrogen deposition over the Czech Republic. Final maps accounting for unmeasured species clearly indicate that the approach used so far may result in a substantial underestimation of nitrogen deposition flux. Our results showed that nitrogen deposition over the Czech forested area in 2008 was well above 2 g N m(-2) yr(-1), with almost 70% of forested area receiving 3-4 g N m(-2) yr(-1). NH3 and gaseous HNO3, contributing about 80%, dominated the dry nitrogen deposition. Estimating the unmeasured nitrogen species by modeled values provides realistic approximations of total nitrogen deposition that also result in more realistic spatial patterns that could be used as input for further studies of likely nitrogen impacts on ecosystems.

Agriculture causes nitrate fertilization of remote alpine lakes

Humans have altered Earth's nitrogen cycle so dramatically that reactive nitrogen (Nr) has doubled. This has increased Nr in aquatic ecosystems, which can lead to reduced water quality and ecosystem health. Apportioning sources of Nr to specific ecosystems, however, continues to be challenging, despite this knowledge being critical for mitigation and protection of water resources. Here we use Δ(17)O, δ(18)O and δ(15)N from Uinta Mountain (Utah, USA) snow, inflow and lake nitrate in combination with a Bayesian-based stable isotope mixing model, to show that at least 70% of nitrates in aquatic systems are anthropogenic and arrive via the atmosphere. Moreover, agricultural activities, specifically nitrate- and ammonium-based fertilizer use, are contributing most (∼60%) Nr, and data from other North American alpine lakes suggest this is a widespread phenomenon. Our findings offer a pathway towards more effective mitigation, but point to challenges in balancing food production with protection of important water resources.

Relative Magnitude and Controls of in Situ N2 and N2O Fluxes due to Denitrification in Natural and Seminatural Terrestrial Ecosystems Using (15)N Tracers

Denitrification is the most uncertain component of the nitrogen (N) cycle, hampering our ability to assess its contribution to reactive N (Nr) removal. This uncertainty emanates from the difficulty in measuring in situ soil N2 production and from the high spatiotemporal variability of the process itself. In situ denitrification was measured monthly between April 2013 and October 2014 in natural (organic and forest) and seminatural ecosystems (semi-improved and improved grasslands) in two UK catchments. Using the (15)N-gas flux method with low additions of (15)NO3(-) tracer, a minimum detectable flux rate of 4 μg N m(-2) h(-1) and 0.2 ng N m(-2) h(-1) for N2 and N2O, respectively, was achieved. Denitrification rates were lower in organic and forest (8 and 10 kg N ha(-1) y(-1), respectively) than in semi-improved and improved grassland soils (13 and 25 kg N ha(-1) y(-1), respectively). The ratio of N2O/N2 + N2O was low and ranged from <1% to 7% across the sites. Variation in denitrification was driven by differences in soil respiration, nitrate, C:N ratio, bulk density, moisture, and pH across the sites. Overall, the contribution of denitrification to Nr removal in natural ecosystems was ~50% of the annual atmospheric Nr deposition, making these ecosystems vulnerable to chronic N saturation.

Confirmation of co-denitrification in grazed grassland

Pasture-based livestock systems are often associated with losses of reactive forms of nitrogen (N) to the environment. Research has focused on losses to air and water due to the health, economic and environmental impacts of reactive N. Di-nitrogen (N₂) emissions are still poorly characterized, both in terms of the processes involved and their magnitude, due to financial and methodological constraints. Relatively few studies have focused on quantifying N₂ losses in vivo and fewer still have examined the relative contribution of the different N₂ emission processes, particularly in grazed pastures. We used a combination of a high ¹⁵N isotopic enrichment of applied N with a high precision of determination of ¹⁵N isotopic enrichment by isotope-ratio mass spectrometry to measure N₂ emissions in the field. We report that 55.8 g N m⁻² (95%, CI 38 to 77 g m⁻²) was emitted as N₂ by the process of co-denitrification in pastoral soils over 123 days following urine deposition (100 g N m⁻²), compared to only 1.1 g N m⁻² (0.4 to 2.8 g m⁻²) from denitrification. This study provides strong evidence for co-denitrification as a major N₂ production pathway, which has significant implications for understanding the N budgets of pastoral ecosystems.

Towards synthetic biological approaches to resource utilization on space missions

This paper demonstrates the significant utility of deploying non-traditional biological techniques to harness available volatiles and waste resources on manned missions to explore the Moon and Mars. Compared with anticipated non-biological approaches, it is determined that for 916 day Martian missions: 205 days of high-quality methane and oxygen Mars bioproduction with Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum can reduce the mass of a Martian fuel-manufacture plant by 56%; 496 days of biomass generation with Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima on Mars can decrease the shipped wet-food mixed-menu mass for a Mars stay and a one-way voyage by 38%; 202 days of Mars polyhydroxybutyrate synthesis with Cupriavidus necator can lower the shipped mass to three-dimensional print a 120 m³ six-person habitat by 85% and a few days of acetaminophen production with engineered Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 can completely replenish expired or irradiated stocks of the pharmaceutical, thereby providing independence from unmanned resupply spacecraft that take up to 210 days to arrive. Analogous outcomes are included for lunar missions. Because of the benign assumptions involved, the results provide a glimpse of the intriguing potential of ‘space synthetic biology’, and help focus related efforts for immediate, near-term impact.

Catchment legacies and time lags: a parsimonious watershed model to predict the effects of legacy storage on nitrogen export

Nutrient legacies in anthropogenic landscapes, accumulated over decades of fertilizer application, lead to time lags between implementation of conservation measures and improvements in water quality. Quantification of such time lags has remained difficult, however, due to an incomplete understanding of controls on nutrient depletion trajectories after changes in land-use or management practices. In this study, we have developed a parsimonious watershed model for quantifying catchment-scale time lags based on both soil nutrient accumulations (biogeochemical legacy) and groundwater travel time distributions (hydrologic legacy). The model accurately predicted the time lags observed in an Iowa watershed that had undergone a 41% conversion of area from row crop to native prairie. We explored the time scales of change for stream nutrient concentrations as a function of both natural and anthropogenic controls, from topography to spatial patterns of land-use change. Our results demonstrate that the existence of biogeochemical nutrient legacies increases time lags beyond those due to hydrologic legacy alone. In addition, we show that the maximum concentration reduction benefits vary according to the spatial pattern of intervention, with preferential conversion of land parcels having the shortest catchment-scale travel times providing proportionally greater concentration reductions as well as faster response times. In contrast, a random pattern of conversion results in a 1:1 relationship between percent land conversion and percent concentration reduction, irrespective of denitrification rates within the landscape. Our modeling framework allows for the quantification of tradeoffs between costs associated with implementation of conservation measures and the time needed to see the desired concentration reductions, making it of great value to decision makers regarding optimal implementation of watershed conservation measures.

Soil nitric oxide emissions from terrestrial ecosystems in China: a synthesis of modeling and measurements

Soils are among the major sources of atmospheric nitric oxide (NO), which play a crucial role in atmospheric chemistry. Here we systematically synthesized the modeling studies and field measurements and presented a novel soil NO emission inventory of terrestrial ecosystems in China. The previously modeled inventories ranged from 480 to 1375 and from 242.8 to 550 Gg N yr(-1) for all lands and croplands, respectively. Nevertheless, all the previous modeling studies were conducted based on very few measurements from China. According to the current synthesis of field measurements, most soil NO emission measurements were conducted at croplands, while the measurements were only conducted at two sites for forest and grassland. The median NO flux was 3.2 ng N m(-2) s(-1) with a fertilizer induced emission factor (FIE) of 0.04% for rice fields, and was 7.1 ng N m(-2) s(-1) with an FIE of 0.67% for uplands. A novel NO emission inventory of 1226.33 (ranging from 588.24 to 2132.05) Gg N yr(-1) was estimated for China's terrestrial ecosystems, which was about 18% of anthropogenic emissions. More field measurements should be conducted to cover more biomes and obtain more representative data in order to well constrain soil NO emission inventory of China.
