Abstract
BACKGROUND While several risk factors for schizophrenia have been identified, their individual impacts are rather small. The relative independent and cumulative impacts of multiple risk factors on disease risk and age of onset warrant further investigation. STUDY DESIGN We conducted a register-based case-control study including all individuals receiving a schizophrenia spectrum disorder in Denmark from 1973 to 2018 (N = 29,142), and a healthy control sample matched 5:1 on age, sex, and parental socioeconomic status (N = 136,387). Register data included parental history of psychiatric illness, birth weight, gestational age, season of birth, population density of birthplace, immigration, paternal age, and Apgar scores. Data were analysed using logistic regression and machine learning. RESULTS Parental history of psychiatric illness (OR = 2.32 [95%CI 2.21-2.43]), high paternal age (OR = 1.30 [1.16-1.45]), and low birth weight (OR = 1.28 [1.16-1.41]) increased the odds of belonging to the patient group. In contrast, being a second-generation immigrant (OR = 0.65 [0.61-0.69]) and high population density of the birthplace (OR = 0.92 [0.89-0.96]) decreased the odds. The findings were supported by a decision tree analysis where parental history, paternal age, and birth weight contributed most to diagnostic classification (ACCtest = 0.69, AUCtest = 0.59, p < 0.001). Twenty percent of patients were child-onset cases. Here, female sex (OR = 1.82 [1.69-1.97]) and parental psychiatric illness (OR = 1.62 [1.49-1.77]) increased the odds of receiving the diagnosis <18 years. CONCLUSION Multiple early factors contribute independently to a higher psychosis risk, suggesting cumulative effects leading to symptom onset. Routine assessments of the most influential risk factors could be incorporated into clinical practise. Being female increased the risk of diagnosis during childhood, suggesting sex differences in the developmental trajectories of the disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with schizophrenia exhibit a reduced life expectancy mainly due to medical-related pathologies which might have been initiated due to stressful events during fetal development. Indeed, intra-uterus growth patterns predict anthropometric measures in adulthood, describing risk factors for schizophrenia and metabolic disorders. We aim to evaluate anthropometric values in two cohorts of antipsychotic-naïve first-episode episode psychosis (FEP) and correlated them with surrogate markers of the fetal environment such as birth weight (BW) and season of birth. METHODS BW, season of birth, and anthropometric values from 2 cohorts of FEP patients (Barcelona and Santander) were evaluated. In cohort B, 91 patients, and 110 controls while in cohort S, 644 and 235 were included respectively. RESULTS Patients were shorter, slimmer, and with lower BMI compared with controls. In both cohorts, patients, and female patients born in winter displayed the shortest height. Regarding BW, height was significantly associated with the interaction of diagnosis and BW in the whole sample and the male subsample. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm reduced anthropometric features in FEP at onset while suggesting the influence of winter birth and BW, highlighting the role of early life events in the later outcome of FEP with sex differences.

Abstract
Importance Mood disorders are associated with increased body weight, especially in females, but it remains unknown when the weight increase starts. Objectives To examine sex-specific weight trajectories associated with familial mood disorder risk and determine the age at which youth at familial risk for mood disorders begin to diverge in weight from controls. Design, Setting, and Participants This community-based, single-center, acceleration cohort study of youth at familial risk for mood disorders and controls with yearly follow-ups (mean [SD], 5 [2.1] years) from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2022, assessed 394 unaffected female and male offspring (aged 3 to 20 years) of parents with or without a mood disorder. Parents with mood (depressive or bipolar) disorders were recruited through adult mental health services. Parents of control participants were matched on age and socioeconomic factors and recruited through acquaintance referrals or schools. Exposures The youth in the familial mood risk group had at least 1 parent with a major mood disorder, whereas control youth did not have a parent with a mood disorder. Main Outcomes and Measures Body mass indexes (BMIs) were calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared from measured weight and height at annual assessments and then converted to age- and sex-adjusted z scores (zBMIs). Repeated-measure regressions examined the association between zBMI and age in youth at familial risk of mood disorders and controls while accounting for sex. Sensitivity analyses accounted for socioeconomic status, prematurity, and birth weight. Results Of 394 participants (mean [SD] age, 11.5 [3.6] years; 203 [51.5%] female), youths at familial risk for mood disorders showed overall no difference in body weight (β = 0.12; 95% CI, 0.01-0.24) from controls. A sex-specific difference was detected, with females at familial risk showing a rapid peripubertal increase in body weight, leading to significantly increased zBMIs at 12 years and older compared with controls (β = 0.57; 95% CI, 0.31-0.82) independent of socioeconomic status, prematurity, or birth weight. Males did not differ from controls at any age. Conclusions and Relevance In this cohort study, females with a family history of mood disorders were prone to weight gain starting around puberty and predating mood disorder onset. Early interventions aiming to prevent adverse mental and physical outcomes in this vulnerable group need to start in childhood.

Abstract
An individual's birthweight, a marker of in utero exposures, was recently associated with certain psychiatric conditions. However, studies investigating the relationship between an individual's preterm birth status and/or birthweight and risk for depression during adulthood are sparse; we used data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) to investigate these potential associations. At study entry, 86,925 postmenopausal women reported their birthweight by category (<6 lbs., 6-7 lbs. 15 oz., 8-9 lbs. 15 oz., or ≥10 lbs.) and their preterm birth status (full-term or ≥4 weeks premature). Women also completed the Burnham screen for depression and were asked to self-report if: (a) they had ever been diagnosed with depression, or (b) if they were taking antidepressant medications. Linear and logistic regression models were used to estimate unadjusted and adjusted effect estimates. Compared to those born weighing between 6 and 7 lbs. 15 oz., individuals born weighing <6 lbs. (βadj = 0.007, P < 0.0001) and ≥10 lbs. (βadj = 0.006, P = 0.02) had significantly higher Burnam scores. Individuals born weighing <6 lbs. were also more likely to have depression (adjOR 1.21, 95% CI 1.11-1.31). Individuals born preterm were also more likely to have depression (adjOR 1.18, 95% CI 1.02-1.35); while attenuated, this association remained in analyses limited to only those reportedly born weighing <6 lbs. Our research supports the role of early life exposures on health risks across the life course. Individuals born at low or high birthweights and those born preterm may benefit from early evaluation and long-term follow-up for the prevention and treatment of mental health outcomes.

Abstract
Follow-up studies are essential for understanding outcomes and informing the care of infants with high risk for medical and developmental consequences because of extreme prematurity or perinatal illness. Studies that extend to school age often identify sequelae that go unrecognized in neonatal or short-term follow-up studies. Many critical neurocognitive, behavioral, functional, and health outcomes are best assessed beginning at school age. The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development Neonatal Research Network (NRN) has performed comprehensive school age evaluations of several key trial cohorts. This manuscript summarizes the important contributions of school age follow-up studies in the NRN, both historically and in ongoing research. We describe in detail the clinical questions that have been answered by the completed studies and new questions about the outcomes of high-risk infants that must be addressed by ongoing and future studies.

Abstract
We aim to systematically explore the potential genetic correlations between five major psychiatric disorders and gestational ages. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary datasets of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), bipolar disorder (BD), schizophrenia (SCZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD) in discovery were downloaded from the Psychiatric GWAS Consortium (PGC) website. Suggestive (Raw p < 0.05) genetic associations in the discovery phrase were further replicated in independent GWASs which downloaded from PGC, the FinnGen study or Integrative Psychiatric Research (iPSYCH) website. GWASs of gestational duration, preterm and post-term birth were derived from previous studies of infants from the Early Growth Genetics (EGG) Consortium, the iPSYCH study, and the Genomic and Proteomic Network for Preterm Birth Research (GPN). We calculated genetic correlations using linkage disequilibrium score (LDSC) regression. Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were performed to investigate the causal effects. We identified four suggestive genetic correlations between psychiatric disorders and gestational age factors in discovery LDSC and two replicated in a confirmation LDSC: gestational duration and ADHD (rg = -0.1405, FDR p = 0.0406), post-term birth and SCZ (rg = -0.2003, FDR p = 0.0042). We also observed causal effect of post-term birth on SCZ by MR (PWeighted median = 0.037, PInverse variance weighted = 0.007). Our analysis suggested no significant evidence of horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneity. This study showed the genetic correlation evidences between gestational age phenotypes and psychiatric disorders, providing novel clues for understanding the pathogenic factors of common psychiatric disorders. LAY SUMMARY: Whereas gestational age factors were reported to be associated with psychiatric disorders, the genetic relationship and causality remain to be revealed. The present study reported the first large-scale genetic correlations investigation of the associations between gestational age phenotypes and psychiatric disorders. Results indicate causal relationships between post-term birth and schizophrenia (SCZ), as well as suggestive genetic correlations between gestational duration and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study provided novel clues for understanding the pathogenic factors of common psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Many studies have shown low birth weight is associated with psychopathology later in life, particularly attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The association is well-replicated, independent from a variety of potential familial confounds, and follows a dose-response curve (decreasing birth weight linked with increasing odds of disorder). However, the specificity of the association to attention problems is called into question by the extent of comorbidity in ADHD, and recent findings that the association is stronger for autism than ADHD. We test the relative dose-response strength of birth weight on multiple aspects of behavior to explore specificity of the effect to attention problems. We also test recent suggestions that the association between birth weight and attention problems is driven by males. Our sample consisted of 9,076 children aged 9-10 from the United States (Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study). Outcomes included 9 problem-scales and the total problems scale from the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Attention problems were the most strongly associated with birth weight after controlling for gestational age, potential familial confounds, and multiple testing, supporting the outcome-specificity of this association. Contrary to recent registry-based findings, an association between birth weight and an autism scale was not observed. Sex moderated the effect of birth weight on total problems, attention problems and aggressive behavior such that these inverse associations were strongly driven by males. Our findings have strong implications for sex-specific prediction and etiological models of childhood psychopathology.

Abstract
AIM We examined whether timing of known risk factors for schizophrenia may influence the development of schizophrenia with primary negative symptoms. METHOD This cross-sectional single-centre study in England used a clinical cohort of 167 clozapine-treated schizophrenia patients. Deficit and nondeficit schizophrenia models were used as clinical proxies of patients with and without primary negative symptoms respectively. Patients were assessed using the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome. We examined previously replicated risk factors (family history of psychosis, advanced paternal age, male gender, birth weight <3000g, summer birth, cannabis use, exposure to physical or sexual abuse and/or bullying) as well as other traumatic events for deficit and nondeficit schizophrenia. RESULTS We found a distinct risk factor pattern for the two groups. Compared to the nondeficit group, patients with deficit schizophrenia reported a significantly lower prevalence of cannabis use (p=0.005) at the time of first-episode psychosis (FEP), physical or sexual abuse (p=0.033) prior to FEP, less exposure to crime-related traumatic events (p=0.012) and significantly associated with summer birth (p=0.017). The groups did not differ in terms of family history of psychosis, advanced paternal age, male gender, or low birth weight. To account for multiple comparisons, a confirmatory analysis was performed using logistic regression which yielded similar results except that summer birth no longer reached statistical significance. CONCLUSION Our results suggest the timing of the insult may influence the symptom presentation, with insults later in life (cannabis or traumatic events) being associated with psychotic presentation and less with primary negative symptoms.

Abstract
Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe neuropsychiatric condition manifested by cognitive, emotional, affective, perceptual, and behavioral abnormalities. Despite decades of research, the biological substrates driving the signs and symptoms of the disorder remain elusive, thus hampering progress in the development of treatments aimed at disease etiologies. The recent emergence of human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-based models has provided the field with a highly innovative approach to generate, study, and manipulate living neural tissue derived from patients, making possible the exploration of fundamental roles of genes and early-life stressors in disease-relevant cell types. Here, we begin with a brief overview of the clinical, epidemiological, and genetic aspects of the condition, with a focus on schizophrenia as a neurodevelopmental disorder. We then highlight relevant technical advancements in hiPSC models and assess novel findings attained using hiPSC-based approaches and their implications for disease biology and treatment innovation. We close with a critical appraisal of the developments necessary for both further expanding knowledge of schizophrenia and the translation of new insights into therapeutic innovations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The genomic contribution to adverse health sequelae in babies born very preterm (<32 weeks' gestation) is unknown. We conducted an investigation of rare CNVs in infants born very preterm as part of a study to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a larger, well-powered genome-wide investigation in the UK, with follow-up using linked National Health Service records and DNA storage for additional research. METHODS We studied 488 parent-offspring trios. We performed genotyping using Illumina Infinium OmniExpress Arrays. CNV calling and quality control (QC) were undertaken using published protocols. We examined de novo CNVs in infants and the rate of known pathogenic variants in infants, mothers and fathers and compared these with published comparator data. We defined rare pathogenic CNVs as those consistently reported to be associated with clinical phenotypes. RESULTS We identified 14 de novo CNVs, representing a mutation rate of 2.9%, compared with 2.1% reported in control populations. The median size of these CNV was much higher than in comparator data (717 kb vs 255 kb). The rate of pathogenic CNVs was 4.3% in infants, 2.7% in mothers and 2% in fathers, compared with 2.3% in UK Biobank participants. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that the rate of de novo CNVs, especially rare pathogenic CNVs, could be elevated in those born very preterm. However, we will need to conduct a much larger study to corroborate this conclusion.

Abstract
Background: Intrauterine growth restriction is a common cause of small for gestational age (SGA) infants worldwide. SGA infants are deficient in digestive enzymes required for fat digestion and absorption compared to appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants, putting them at risk for impaired neurocognitive development. Objective: The objective was to determine if a hydrolyzed fat (HF) infant formula containing soy free fatty acids, 2-monoacylglycerolpalmitate, cholesterol, and soy lecithin could increase brain tissue incorporation of essential fatty acids or white matter to enhance brain development in SGA and AGA neonatal piglet models. Methods: Sex-matched, littermate pairs of SGA (0.5-0.9 kg) and AGA (1.2-1.8 kg) 2 days old piglets (N = 60) were randomly assigned to control (CON) or HF formula diets in a 2 × 2 factorial design. On day 14, 24 piglets were used for hippocampal RNA-sequencing; the rest began a spatial learning task. On days 26-29, brain structure was assessed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Cerebellum and hippocampus were analyzed for fatty acid content. Results: SGA piglets grew more slowly than AGA piglets, with no effect of diet on daily weight gain or weight at MRI. HF diet did not affect brain weight. HF diet increased relative volumes of 7 brain regions and white matter (WM) volume in both SGA and AGA piglets. However, HF did not ameliorate SGA total WM integrity deficits. RNA sequencing revealed SGA piglets had increased gene expression of synapse and cell signaling pathways and decreased expression of ribosome pathways in the hippocampus compared to AGA. HF decreased expression of immune response related genes in the hippocampus of AGA and SGA piglets, but did not correct gene expression patterns in SGA piglets. Piglets learned the T-maze task at the same rate, but SGA HF, SGA CON, and AGA HF piglets had more accurate performance than AGA CON piglets on reversal day 2. HF increased arachidonic acid (ARA) percentage in the cerebellum and total ARA in the hippocampus. Conclusions: HF enhanced brain development in the neonatal piglet measured by brain volume and WM volume in specific brain regions; however, more studies are needed to assess long-term outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Disruptions in fetal development (via genetic and environmental pathways) have been consistently associated with risk for schizophrenia in a variety of studies. Although multiple obstetric complications (OCs) have been linked to schizophrenia, this review will discuss emerging evidence supporting the role of prenatal maternal stress (PNMS) in the etiology of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). In addition, findings linking PNMS to intermediate phenotypes of the disorder, such as OCs and premorbid cognitive, behavioral, and motor deficits, will be reviewed. Maternal immune and endocrine dysregulation will also be explored as potential mechanisms by which PNMS confers risk for SSD. RECENT FINDINGS PNMS has been linked to offspring SSD; however, findings are mixed due to inconsistent and retrospective assessments of PNMS and lack of specificity about SSD outcomes. PNMS is also associated with various intermediate phenotypes of SSD (e.g., prenatal infection/inflammation, decreased fetal growth, hypoxia-related OCs). Recent studies continue to elucidate the impact of PNMS while considering the moderating roles of fetal sex and stress timing, but it is still unclear which aspects of PNMS (e.g., type, timing) confer risk for SSD specifically. PNMS increases risk for SSD, but only in a small portion of fetuses exposed to PNMS. Fetal sex, genetics, and other environmental factors, as well as additional pre- and postnatal insults, likely contribute to the PNMS-SSD association. Longitudinal birth cohort studies are needed to prospectively illuminate the mechanisms that account for the variability in outcomes following PNMS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The cumulative effect of childhood adversities on depressive symptoms in later life is well documented. However, there is a dearth of accurate information about this effect among Chinese population. The aim of this study is to examine the cumulative effect of childhood adversities on mid-late depressive symptoms in the Chinese population. METHODS Data were drawn from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). We included 17,425 respondents aged 45 and over, and retrospectively collected information of childhood adversities. The depressive symptoms were assessed using a 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). A structural equation model was employed for analysis. RESULTS Parental mental health problems had a direct effect on mid-late depressive symptoms (β = 0.180, P < 0.001). Lack of friends showed direct effect on mid-late depressive symptoms (β = 0.118, P < 0.001) and indirect effect through low SES and poor health status in mid-late life (β = 0.054, P < 0.001). Poor health status, child neglect and abuse, and low SES in childhood had an indirect effect on mid-late depressive symptoms (β = 0.128, β = 0.040, β = 0.098, P < 0.001). LIMITATIONS Limitations of this study include recall bias on life course data collection, absence of adolescent data, limited construction of latent variables. CONCLUSIONS These findings are crucial for preventing childhood adversities and subsequently reducing the prevalence of depression. Moreover, the indirect effects of childhood adversities suggest that early intervention and resource mobilization can circumvent some of the long-term mental health consequences.

Abstract
Increasing evidence coming from neuroimaging, molecular genetic and post-mortem studies have implicated oligodendrocyte abnormalities and compromised myelin integrity in schizophrenia. Activity-dependent myelination in adult brain is considered to be an important mechanism of neural circuit's plasticity due to the presence of a large population of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPC) in the adult CNS. Growing evidence for impairment of oligodendrocyte differentiation has been reported in the brain of schizophrenia subjects. OPC are very vulnerable inflammation, oxidative stress, and elevated glutamate levels leading to excitotoxicity. The mechanisms of prolonged suppression of oligodendrocyte differentiation caused by prenatal maternal infection or preterm birth are discussed in view of increased risk of schizophrenia, neurodevelopmental and inflammation hypotheses of the disease. The data that some neuroleptics stimulate OPC differentiation and ameliorate myelin alterations support the notion that impairment in the differentiation of OPCs contributes to oligodendrocyte abnormalities and to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.

Abstract
Preterm infants are at elevated risk for a host of neurodevelopmental problems, including disorders that appear later in life. Gene-environment interactions and prematurity may combine to increase the risk for poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. Increasing evidence supports a genetic link to risk for atypical development; however, no genomic risk profiles are currently used for infants without apparent genetic disorders. The purpose of this review was to synthesize recent evidence of genetic associations with atypical neurodevelopmental outcomes that may affect preterm infants who do not have a rare genetic disease. Electronic and hand-search strategies were used to find relevant articles that were English-language, peer-reviewed primary research or meta-analysis reports published between July 2009 and July 2014, involving human participants. Articles included in the analysis (N = 29) used a wide range of study designs and methodologies, complicating the analysis. An integrative-review design was used to synthesize the data. Numerous genes (n = 43) and additional large deletion copy number variants were associated with neurodevelopmental outcomes, including cognition, attention, perception, psychiatric disease, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, infant behavior, and alterations in brain architecture. The creation of genetic risk profiles for complex disorders of neurodevelopment is presently hindered by inconsistent genetic-association evidence, methodological considerations, reporting problems, and lack of replication. However, several avenues of investigation offer promise, including large (>100 kb) copy number variants and the candidate genes MET, NRG3, and SLC6A4, each of which were reported to have associations with neurodevelopmental outcomes in multiple, high-quality studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE Schizophrenia occurs in 20-25% of adults with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS). General population studies of schizophrenia report associations with perinatal complications, although effect sizes are generally low. We aimed to determine whether such factors are associated with expression of schizophrenia in individuals with 22q11.2DS. METHODS We investigated the relationship of small for gestational age (SGA) birth weight (<3rd percentile for sex and gestational age) and prematurity (<37 weeks gestation) to expression of schizophrenia in a well-characterized cohort of 123 adults with 22q11.2DS. Outcome measures included adjusted odds ratios and positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV) for schizophrenia. RESULTS SGA birth weight (OR = 3.52, 95% CI = 1.34-9.22) and prematurity (OR = 5.38, 95% CI = 1.63-17.75), but not maternal factors, were significant risk factors for schizophrenia in 22q11.2DS. Being born SGA or premature resulted in a PPV of 46% for schizophrenia; NPV in the absence of both features was 83%. Post hoc analyses suggested these perinatal complications were also associated with factors indicative of increased severity of schizophrenia. CONCLUSION In 22q11.2DS, fetal growth and gestation may have a clinically significant impact on future risk for schizophrenia. These data advance our understanding of determinants of disease-specific expression in 22q11.2DS, with implications for other genomic disorders.Genet Med 18 4, 350-355.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cross-sectional and retrospective studies have highlighted the long-term negative effects of maternal depression on offspring physical, social, and emotional development, but longitudinal research is needed to clarify the pathways by which maternal depression during pregnancy and early childhood affects offspring outcomes. The current study tested one developmental pathway by which maternal depression during pregnancy might negatively impact offspring mental health in young adulthood, via poor physical health in early childhood. METHODS The sample consisted of 815 Australian youth and their mothers who were followed for 20 years. Mothers reported on their own depressive symptoms during pregnancy and offspring early childhood. Youth completed interviews about health-related stress and social functioning at age 20 years, and completed a questionnaire about their own depressive symptoms 2 to 5 years later. RESULTS Path analysis indicated that prenatal maternal depressive symptoms predicted worse physical health during early childhood for offspring, and this effect was partially explained by ongoing maternal depression in early childhood. Offspring poor physical health during childhood predicted increased health-related stress and poor social functioning at age 20. Finally, increased health-related stress and poor social functioning predicted increased levels of depressive symptoms later in young adulthood. Maternal depression had a significant total indirect effect on youth depression via early childhood health and its psychosocial consequences. CONCLUSIONS Poor physical health in early childhood and its effects on young adults' social functioning and levels of health related stress is one important pathway by which maternal depression has long-term consequences for offspring mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Decreased birth weight (BW) is associated with later psychosis, but the sources of decreased BW for those at risk for psychosis remain unclear. AIM To determine whether fetal exposure to influenza and/or hypoxia accounts for BW decreases among psychotic cases and controls. METHOD Subjects were 111 cases diagnosed with schizophrenia or affective psychosis and 333 matched controls from the Collaborative Perinatal Project. Psychiatric diagnoses were ascertained from medical records. Influenza and hypoxia were determined from maternal and cord sera collected at birth. RESULTS Cases exposed to severe fetal hypoxia or influenza had significantly lower BW compared with unexposed cases and controls, regardless of exposure status. No significant differences in BW were observed among controls based on exposure status. CONCLUSIONS Decreased BW appears to be a risk factor for psychosis only in the presence of other teratogens. Liability to psychosis likely renders fetuses vulnerable to decreased fetal growth in response to hypoxia and influenza.

Abstract
Preterm birth is associated with a high risk of residual neurodevelopmental disability and cognitive impairment. These problems are closely associated with psychiatric disorders and thus it is unsurprising that preterm birth also confers high risk for poor long term mental health. The risk associated with preterm birth is not a general one, but appears to be specific to symptoms and disorders associated with anxiety, inattention and social and communication problems, and manifest in a significantly higher prevalence of emotional disorders, ADHD and Autism. Adolescence is a key period for mental health and studies have shown that problems evident in childhood persist over this time and are more stable amongst preterm individuals than term-born peers. There is also modest evidence for an increased prevalence of psychotic symptoms in preterm adolescents. The high prevalence of psychiatric disorders, present in around 25% of preterm adolescents, requires long term screening and intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The foetal origins hypothesis suggests an association between low birth weight and later depression, yet evidence supporting this association has been inconsistent. METHOD We systematically reviewed evidence for an association between low birth weight and adult depression or psychological distress in the general population by meta-analysis. We searched EMBASE, Medline, PsycINFO and ISI Web of Science for studies reporting observational data with low birth weight as the exposure and self- or clinician-rated depression or psychological distress measures as an outcome. Selective studies of exposures such as famine or outcomes such as severe illness only were excluded. Altogether,1454 studies were screened for relevance, 26 were included in the qualitative synthesis, 18 were included in the meta-analysis. A random effects meta-analysis method was used to obtain a pooled estimate of effect size. RESULTS The odds of depression or psychological distress was greater for those of low birth weight (<2500 g) compared to those of normal birth weight (>2500 g) or greater [odds ratio (OR) 1.15, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.00-1.32]. However, this association became non-significant after trim-and-fill correction for publication bias (OR 1.08, 95% CI 0.92-1.27). Using meta-regression, no differences in effect size were observed by gender, outcome measure of depression or psychological distress, or whether the effect size was adjusted for possible confounders. CONCLUSIONS We found evidence to support a weak association between low birth weight and later depression or psychological distress, which may be due to publication bias. It remains possible that the association may vary according to severity of symptoms or other factors.
