Abstract
OBJECTIVES It is widely known that sleep disorders are a common problem among older persons. Few reviews have described current knowledge about the holistic concept of sleep health of community-dwelling older people. AIM This study aimed to describe the current state of knowledge and identify research gaps concerning sleep health among community-dwelling older persons. METHOD We conducted a scoping review. Searches were conducted in three databases (Medline, CINAHL, and PsycINFO) to identify scientific articles including outcomes with all five sleep health dimensions (sleep duration, sleep continuity, timing, wakefulness/daytime sleepiness, and sleep quality) among community-dwelling older persons aged ≥65 years. Eight articles were included from a total of 1826 hits, with sample sizes between 1413 and 6485. RESULTS The sleep health outcomes of community-dwelling older adults differed between the sexes. Older persons with at least two or more poor sleep health dimensions might have increased risk for depression, higher healthcare costs and mortality, while self-reported better sleep health might be associated with lower odds of frailty. CONCLUSION Future research is needed to confirm the findings by investigating the multidimensional concept of sleep health in a general older population. The identified knowledge gaps are how persons ≥80 years' experience their sleep health, and how sleep medicine is prescribed to treat sleep problems in persons ≥80 years in different care contexts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Older adults are more likely to have poor sleep quality and be socially isolated. The present study examined the potential benefits and disadvantages of social media use (SMU) with respect to sleep quality and perceived social isolation among Iranian late-middle-aged and older adults with focus a on both the mediating and moderating role of psychological distress. METHODS A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 900 older community-dwellers living in Shiraz using a structured questionnaire. Social media use was assessed by estimating the frequency of social networking site visits per week. Data concerning self-rated physical health, chronic medical and mental health conditions, perceived social isolation, sleep quality, and psychological distress were also collected. Multiple linear regression was used to identify independent variables associated with outcomes. Then, mediation and moderation models were used to examine the potential mediating and moderating effects of psychological distress and SMU on their relationships with the study variables. RESULTS Higher social media use was associated with better sleep quality and less perceived social isolation. Nevertheless, the relationships between SMU and participants' sleep quality and perceived social isolation were largely mediated by their level of psychological distress. Furthermore, SMU had a significant moderating effect in the relationship between the psychological distress and the levels of perceived social isolation, so that participants with higher frequency of SMU per week felt less loneliness. CONCLUSIONS The study findings suggest that SMU has a positive buffering effect regarding late middle-aged and older adults' mental health mainly through moderation of their perceived social isolation. The mediating role of psychological distress in research examining the relationship between SMU and older adults' mental health outcomes should be considered in future research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the association of biopsychosocial stress indicators (perceived stress, perceived discrimination, stressful life events, and allostatic load) with sleep outcomes (sleep duration and insomnia symptoms) and to examine sex and age interactions for associations between stress and sleep in older Puerto Rican adults. METHODS Secondary analyses were performed with 830 participants (72% female) from wave 2 (2006-2011) of the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study (BPRHS), a prospective population-based cohort study (45-75years at baseline) and Boston Puerto Rican Osteoporosis Study (BPROS) (2007-2012), an ancillary study of the BPRHS. Recruitment occurred in randomly selected census blocks using door-to-door and community-based activities. In-home data collection visits included a baseline assessment and follow-up interviews. Questionnaires assessed perceived stress, discrimination, stressful life events, and sleep. Allostatic load indicators were measured objectively. Regression models controlled for sociodemographic, behavioral, and health factors, with interaction analyses, followed by sex- and sex-by-age-stratified analyses. RESULTS In the prior 2years, participants with chronic stress had 50% greater odds of reporting nonoptimal sleep duration (<7 or >9 hours). Life events trajectories were significantly related to insomnia symptoms. Men ≥65years who experienced chronic stress had greater insomnia symptoms than women, or than men with low stress or acute stress. CONCLUSIONS Stressful life events may affect sleep duration and insomnia symptoms among older Puerto Rican adults, particularly men 65 years and older who experienced chronic stress. Given the differences in sleep patterns experienced by older adults and their relationships with health outcomes, identifying methods to support sleep health among those with chronic stress is important.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This article aims to offer a comprehensive review of optimal integrative medicine practices for geriatric oncology patients. Given the aging population and the global rise in cancer incidence, it is crucial to identify evidence-based modalities and employ an integrated approach to enhance cancer outcomes and quality of life in older adults. RECENT FINDINGS It has been predicted that 20.5% (6.9 million) of new cancer cases in 2050 will occur in adults over 80 years old.1 The increasing focus on lifestyle factors in healthy aging has shed light on various overlooked areas of significance. Notably, anti-inflammatory diets and the promotion of a healthy gut microbiome have demonstrated significant impacts on overall health outcomes, bolstering the body's innate capacity to combat disease. This review delves into further evidence and extrapolation concerning integrative approaches and their influence on cancer outcomes and older adults quality of life. The complexity and unique nature of cancer in older adults requires a wide range of support from medical providers. Incorporating various integrative techniques as part of cancer treatment and side effect support can improve health outcomes and patient's quality of life. Familiarity with the lifestyle interventions and other topics explored in this review equips healthcare providers to offer tailored and holistic care to geriatric patients navigating cancer.

Abstract
AIM Depression and disability in activities of daily living (ADL) are common in middle-aged and older adults. This study investigated the bidirectional relationship between depression and disability in ADL in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS Data from a baseline study of 17,596 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and two follow-up visits at 4 and 7 years were included. We designed Study A and Study B to explore the interaction between depression and disability in ADL in middle-aged and older people. RESULTS Individuals with disability in ADL at baseline had adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of 1.331 (1.118, 1.584) and 1.969 (1.585, 2.448) for developing depression compared with those without disability in ADL at the 4- and 7-year follow-ups, respectively. Individuals with depression at baseline had adjusted ORs of 1.353 (1.127, 1.625) and 1.347 (1.130, 1.604), respectively, for developing disability in ADL 4 and 7 years later. CONCLUSIONS There was a bidirectional relationship between depression and disability in ADL. Depression increased the risk of disability in ADL, but this risk did not increase with time, whereas the effect of disability in ADL on depression increased with time.

Abstract
Poor sleep quality is a widespread concern. While the influence of particle exposure on sleep disturbances has received considerable attention, research exploring other dimensions of sleep quality and the chemical components of the particles remains limited. We employed a marginal structural model to explore the association of long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its chemical components with poor sleep quality. The odds ratio (95 % CI) for poor sleep quality was 1.335 (1.292-1.378), 1.097 (1.080-1.113), 1.137 (1.100-1.174), 1.197 (1.156-1.240), and 1.124 (1.107-1.140) per IQR increase in the concentration of PM2.5, SO42-, NO3-, NH4+, and BC, respectively. The score (and 95 % CI) of sleep latency, use of sleep medication, habitual sleep efficiency, subjective sleep quality, and daytime dysfunction were affected by PM2.5, with an increase of 0.059 (0.050-0.069), 0.054 (0.049-0.059), 0.011 (0.008-0.014), 0.011 (0.005-0.018), and 0.026 (0.018-0.034) per IQR increase in PM2.5 concentrations, respectively. This study supports the association of long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its chemical components with poor sleep quality.

Abstract
Study Objectives Few studies of middle-aged and older adults have examined the association between age and sleep using objective sleep measures. We examined these associations in adults aged ≥40 years using wrist actigraphy, and investigated whether these associations differed by sex and race. Methods Participants were 468 cognitively normal adults aged ≥40 years enrolled in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging who completed wrist actigraphy. We used Generalized Least Squares Models to examine the associations of age with actigraphic sleep parameters, including total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, and wake after sleep onset (WASO). We conducted interaction and stratification analyses to test whether cross-sectional age-sleep associations were modified by sex and race. Results In analyses adjusting for sex, body mass index, and individual medical conditions, older age was associated with longer TST from ages 40-70 that plateaued after age 70. Older age also was associated with lower sleep efficiency, longer sleep onset latency, and greater WASO. In men only, after age 70, older age was associated with shorter TST, lower sleep efficiency, longer onset latency, and greater WASO. However, we did not observe any significant interactions of race with age. Conclusions Older age was associated with longer TST from ages 40 to 70 and with poorer sleep quality after age 40, and these relationships might vary by sex. Future studies with larger sample sizes are needed to investigate mechanisms that may account for sex differences in the observed age-sleep associations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the effects of exercise training (ET) on sleep problem have been reported, the effects according to the components of exercise, including intensity, frequency, and time window, are unknown. Thus, in this study, we aimed to assess the effects of ET on sleep quality in community-dwelling older adults with sleep problems. METHODS We evaluated individuals aged ≥65 years whose Pittsburgh sleep quality index was >5 points at baseline. The participants were allocated to either the control group or the ET group and underwent interval walking training (IWT) for 5 months. Information regarding intensity, frequency, and time window of ET were obtained using a waist-worn accelerometer. RESULTS Overall, 63 participants (24 men [mean ± standard deviation age: 75.1 ± 4.6 years] and 39 women [74.7 ± 5.2 years]) and 65 participants (24 men [75.2 ± 4.0 years] and 41 women [73.6 ± 4.2 years]) were included in the ET and control groups, respectively. The change in Pittsburgh sleep quality index was not significantly different between the two groups for both sexes. In the ET group, women who exercised 3-8 h before bedtime, men who did ET > 8 h before bedtime and more than 1 h after waking up, and men who did ET ≥ 5.05 days/week experienced significant improvements compared to the baseline. CONCLUSIONS IWT does not significantly improve sleep quality. To obtain improvements in sleep quality, it might be necessary to consider the time window of performing ET for both sexes and ET frequency for men.

Abstract
Objectives Exploring the effects of swallowing function on sleep quality could provide valuable insights into the potential impact of reduced swallowing function on sleep. However, pertinent studies are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between dysphagia risk and sleep health in community-dwelling older adults. Methods Data for this cross-sectional study were obtained from the Shizuoka and Daiko studies conducted as part of the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study. Information on demographics, overall lifestyle, dysphagia risk, as well as sleep quality, duration, satisfaction, and regularity, was obtained using a self-administered questionnaire. Dysphagia risk and sleep quality were assessed using the Dysphagia Risk Assessment Questionnaire for the Community-dwelling Elderly and the Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Questionnaire Index, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression, adjusted for covariates, was employed to assess the association between dysphagia risk and sleep health. Results Among the 3058 participants (1633 males, 1425 females) aged ≥60 years, 28.0 % exhibited dysphagia risk, and 19.1 % reported poor sleep quality. Those with dysphagia risk were more likely to experience poor sleep quality than those without dysphagia risk. In male participants, dysphagia was significantly associated with poor sleep quality, unsatisfactory sleep, and sleep irregularity, but was not significantly associated with unsatisfactory or irregular sleep in female participants. The Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Questionnaire Index components-subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep disturbances, and daytime dysfunction-were associated with dysphagia risk in both sexes. Conclusions Dysphagia risk is associated with sleep quality in older individuals in Japan. Thus, preserving swallowing function may contribute to enhancing sleep quality.

Abstract
A growing interest has been recently reported in exploring sleep duration within psychology context in particular to its relation to some mental chronic diseases such as depression. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between self-reported sleep hours as an outcome and self-perceived depression among Emirati adults, after adjusting for sociodemographic factors such as age, gender, marital status, and employment status. We performed a cross-sectional analysis using 11,455 participants baseline data of the UAE Healthy Future Study (UAEHFS). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were performed with self-reported sleep hours as an outcome. The predictors were the self-reported depression by measuring the PHQ-8 score, sociodemographic factors (age, gender, marital status, and employment status) Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were reported. In a sensitivity analysis, a multivariate imputation by chained equations (MICE) procedure was applied with classification and Regression Trees (CART) to impute missing values. Overall, 11,455 participants were included in the final analysis of this study. Participants' median age was 32.0 years (Interquartile-Range: 24.0, 39.0). There were 6,217 (54.3%) males included in this study. In total, 4,488 (63.6%) of the participants reported sleep duration of more than 7 hours. Statistically significant negative association was observed between the total PHQ-8 score as a measure for depression and binarized self-reported sleep, OR = 0.961 (95% CI: 0.948, 0.974). For one unit increase in age and BMI, the odds ratio of reporting shorter sleep was 0.979 (95% CI: 0.969, 0.990) and 0.987 (95% CI: 0.977, 0.998), respectively. The study findings indicate a correlation between self-reported depression and an increased probability of individuals reporting shorter self-perceived sleep durations especially when considering the sociodemographic factors as predictors. There was a variation in the effect of depression on sleep duration among different study groups. In particular, the association between reported sleep duration and reported depression, students and unemployed individuals have reported longer sleep hours as compared to employed participants. Also, married individuals reported a higher percentage of longer sleep duration as compared to single and unmarried ones when examined reported depression as a predictor to sleep duration. However, there was no gender differences in self-perceived sleep duration when associated with reported depression.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the duration of sleep per day and cardiovascular metabolic multimorbidity (CMM) in older adults and to identify how many hours of sleep per day can lead to a lower risk of CMM in older adults. BACKGROUND CMM are a common syndrome in the older adults. There may be an association between sleep duration and CMM in older adults, with both insomnia and sleep deprivation having an impact on the health of older adults. Therefore, it is important to explore the possibility that older adults who sleep for a few hours per day may have a lower prevalence of CMM. METHODS The study included 9710 older adults. The sleep duration in this study was assessed by the question "How many hours of sleep do you currently get in a day? ". Older adults were defined as having CMM when they had two or more of the five categories of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, stroke or cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia. We used multivariate logistic regression analysis to explore the association among sleep duration and CMM. Restrictive cubic splines were used to examine the shape of the association among sleep duration and the CMM. The STROBE checklist was used for this cross-sectional study. RESULTS The mean age was 84.78 ± 11.73 years, with 55.5 % being female. Of the total sample, 21.3 % were CMM. When all covariates were adjusted, there was dose-response relationship between sleep duration and CMM. The dose-response relationship between CMM and sleep duration showed that older adults had a lower risk of cardiovascular and metabolic multimorbidity when they slept 9 h and 10 h per day. CONCLUSION With the increasing population of older adults, the number of older adults suffering from CMM continues to rise, and adequate sleep time can effectively prevent the occurrence of CMM. We should pay attention to the sleep problem of the older adults. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This study provided information for healthcare providers to identify circumstances that increase cardiovascular metabolic multimorbidity and suggest the appropriate sleep duration per day to reduce the risk of disease in older adults. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Because of the public database data used in this study, all data were collected by survey agency personnel, so this section is not applicable to this study.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep disorders are common health problems in the elderly. One of the unusual and often overlooked risk factors for hypertension is insomnia. Therefore, this study investigated the relationships between insomnia and sleep problems with hypertension in the elderly population living in Tehran, Iran. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study conducted in 2017, 450 elderly individuals (aged ≥ 60 years) living in households were randomly selected from five areas in the city of Tehran, Iran, via a multi-stage sampling method (stratified and clustered). Their sleep status and hypertension were examined using a self-reported comprehensive questionnaire to assess the physical, mental, and spiritual health needs of the elderly. The utilized questionnaire was designed and previously psychometrically validated. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models assessed the responses regarding sleep and hypertension along with other variables to explore their relationships. Results 450 elderly individuals were recruited, of which 52.7% were men, and 47.3% were women. The mean age of the participants was 70.1 ± 7.3 years, and About 74.2% of participants were in the 60 to 74 years old, age group. Hypertension had a statistically significant relationship with insomnia. For one unit of increase in better sleep status score, hypertension decreased by 4% (OR = 0.96, P = 0.017). Conclusion It seems that in preventive and therapeutic interventions related to insomnia, the risk of hypertension in the elderly should be considered, and their blood pressure should be monitored and constantly controlled. We suggest a more clinically accurate approach to insomnia, sleep disorders, and hypertension and further evaluation of variables such as sleep duration and obstructive sleep apnea in future studies.

Abstract
Background The pain and sleep disorders caused by arthritis are health issues that have been re-emphasized with the aging population. However, the majority of research on arthritis and sleep disorders has focused on cases that have already been diagnosed with arthritis. This research aims to explore the correlation between sleep duration and new-onset arthritis in middle-aged and older adult individuals. Methods Utilizing data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from baseline (2011) to the Wave 3 follow-up (2018), we conducted a 7-year longitudinal investigation targeting populations with valid sleep questionnaire records and without arthritis. Sleep duration was assessed from nighttime sleep and daytime nap records. The new-onset of arthritis was determined based on self-reported diagnosis. We employed different logistic regression models to consider the potential impact of sleep duration on arthritis and conducted mediation analyses to assess the involvement of BMI in the association between sleep duration and the new-onset risk of arthritis. Results Out of the 6,597 individuals analyzed in the cohort, 586 (8.9%) were diagnosed with new-onset arthritis. Median sleep duration was notably shorter in the new-onset arthritis group (6.63 vs. 6.41 h, p < 0.05). There was a notable negative correlation found between new-onset risk of arthritis and sleep duration, with each Interquartile Range (IQR) increment in sleep leading to a 16% risk reduction (OR: 0.864; 95% CI: 0.784-0.954). Stratified analyses revealed BMI as a potential modifier in the sleep-arthritis relationship (P for interaction = 0.05). Mediation analyses further showed that about 3.5% of the association was mediated by BMI. Additionally, the inclusion of sleep duration improved the arthritis predictive power of our model, with an IDI of 0.105 (0.0203, 0.1898) and an NRI of 0.0013 (0.0004, 0.0022) after adding sleep duration to the basic model. Conclusion In the middle-aged and older adult demographic of China, increased sleep duration is associated with a decreased new-onset risk of arthritis, with BMI potentially playing a role in mediating this connection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have revealed the effects of childhood adversity, anxiety, and negative coping on sleep quality in older adults, but few studies have focused on the association between childhood adversity and sleep quality in rural older adults and the potential mechanisms of this influence. In this study, we aim to evaluate sleep quality in rural older adults, analyze the impact of adverse early experiences on their sleep quality, and explore whether anxiety and negative coping mediate this relationship. METHODS Data were derived from a large cross-sectional study conducted in Deyang City, China, which recruited 6,318 people aged 65 years and older. After excluding non-agricultural household registration and lack of key information, a total of 3,873 rural older adults were included in the analysis. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to analyze the relationship between childhood adversity and sleep quality, and the mediating role of anxiety and negative coping. RESULTS Approximately 48.15% of rural older adults had poor sleep quality, and older adults who were women, less educated, widowed, or living alone or had chronic illnesses had poorer sleep quality. Through structural equation model fitting, the total effect value of childhood adversity on sleep quality was 0.208 (95% CI: 0.146, 0.270), with a direct effect value of 0.066 (95% CI: 0.006, 0.130), accounting for 31.73% of the total effect; the total indirect effect value was 0.142 (95% CI: 0.119, 0.170), accounting for 68.27% of the total effect. The mediating effects of childhood adversity on sleep quality through anxiety and negative coping were significant, with effect values of 0.096 (95% CI: 0.078, 0.119) and 0.024 (95% CI: 0.014, 0.037), respectively. The chain mediating effect of anxiety and negative coping between childhood adversity and sleep quality was also significant, with an effect value of 0.022 (95% CI: 0.017, 0.028). CONCLUSIONS Anxiety and negative coping were important mediating factors for rural older adult's childhood adversity and sleep quality. This suggests that managing anxiety and negative coping in older adults may mitigate the negative effects of childhood adversity on sleep quality.

Abstract
PURPOSE Frailty and Circadian Syndrome (CircS) are prevalent among the elderly, yet the link between them remains underexplored. This study aims to examine the association between CircS and frailty, particularly focusing on the impact of various CircS components on frailty. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007 to 2018. The 49-item Frailty Index (FI) was employed to assess frailty. To understand the prevalence of CircS in relation to frailty, we applied three multivariate logistic regression models. Additionally, subgroup and interaction analyses were performed to investigate potential modifying factors. RESULTS The study included 8,569 participants. In fully adjusted models, individuals with CircS showed a significantly higher risk of frailty compared to those without CircS (Odds Ratio [OR] = 2.18, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.91-2.49, p < 0.001). A trend of increasing frailty risk with greater CircS component was observed (trend test p < 0.001). Age (p = 0.01) and race (p = 0.02) interactions notably influenced this association, although the direction of effect was consistent across subgroups. Sensitivity analysis further confirmed the strength of this relationship. CONCLUSION This study identifies a strong positive correlation between CircS and frailty in the elderly. The risk of frailty escalates with an increasing number of CircS components. These findings highlight the intricate interplay between circadian syndrome and frailty in older adults, offering valuable insights for developing targeted prevention and intervention strategies.

Abstract
Sleep strongly supports the formation of adaptive immunity, e.g., after vaccination. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely obscure. Here we show in healthy humans that sleep compared to nocturnal wakefulness specifically promotes the migration of various T-cell subsets towards the chemokine CCL19, which is essential for lymph-node homing and, thus, for the initiation and maintenance of adaptive immune responses. Migration towards the inflammatory chemokine CCL5 remained unaffected. Incubating the cells with plasma from sleeping participants likewise increased CCL19-directed migration, an effect that was dependent on growth hormone and prolactin signaling. These findings show that sleep selectively promotes the lymph node homing potential of T cells by increasing hormonal release, and thus reveal a causal mechanism underlying the supporting effect of sleep on adaptive immunity in humans.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To compare the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in enhancing sleep quality in older people. BACKGROUND Sleep problems in older adults have become increasingly prominent. Sleep problems not only affect the health and quality of life of older people, but also the range of chronic diseases caused by sleep problems also impose a huge burden on social services and health care. Non-pharmacological interventions are an effective alternative to pharmacological therapies, but it is unclear which non-pharmacological therapies are most effective in enhancing sleep quality in older adults. DESIGN A systematic review and network meta-analysis based on PRISMA-NMA. METHODS A total of seven databases were searched from the establishment of the database to March 2023. After literature screening and data extraction, the Cochrane Bias assessment tool 2.0 version of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was used to evaluate literature quality. A network meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the relative efficacy of the non-pharmacological interventions on sleep quality. RESULTS A total of 71 RCTs involving nine non-pharmacological interventions were included. The results of the network meta-analysis showed that the joint intervention may be the most effective non-pharmacological intervention to enhance sleep quality in older adults. CONCLUSION This study confirms that non-pharmacological interventions can improve sleep quality in older adults. The use of non-pharmacological interventions can be promoted by healthcare professionals in the future to improve the quality of sleep and thus the physical and mental health of older people. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE This evidence suggests that joint interventions may be most effective. Therefore, in the future, a combination of non-pharmacological interventions could be used to maximise their effectiveness in improving sleep quality in older people and promoting healthy aging. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine ethnic disparities in the prevalence of diabetes and its association with sleep disorders among the older adults Han and ethnic minority (Bai, Ha Ni, and Dai) population in rural southwest China. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of 5,642 was conducted among the rural southwest population aged ≥60 years, consisting of a structured interview and measurement of fasting blood glucose, height, weight, and waist circumference. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. RESULTS The overall prevalence of diabetes and sleep disorder was 10.2% and 40.1%, respectively. Bai participants had the highest prevalence of diabetes (15.9%) and obesity (9.9%)(P < 0.01), while Ha Ni participants had the lowest prevalence of diabetes (5.1%) and obesity (3.4%)(P < 0.01). The highest prevalence of sleep disorder (48.4%) was recorded in Bai participants, while Dai participants had the lowest prevalence of sleep disorder (25.6%)(P < 0.01). In all four studied ethnicities, females had a higher prevalence of sleep disorder than males (P < 0.01), and the prevalence of sleep disorder increased with age (P < 0.01). The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated older adults with sleep disorder had a risk of developing diabetes (P < 0.05). Moreover, the higher educational level, family history of diabetes, and obesity were the main risk factors for diabetes in participants (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION There are stark ethnic disparities in the prevalence of diabetes and sleep disorders in southwest China. Future diabetes prevention and control strategies should be tailored to address ethnicity, and improving sleep quality may reduce the prevalence of diabetes.

Abstract
Understanding and classifying brain states as a function of sleep quality and age has important implications for developing lifestyle-based interventions involving sleep hygiene. Current studies use an algorithm that captures non-linear features of brain complexity to differentiate awake electroencephalography (EEG) states, as a function of age and sleep quality. Fifty-eight participants were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory (PSQI) and awake resting state EEG. Groups were formed based on age and sleep quality (younger adults n = 24, mean age = 24.7 years, SD = 3.43, good sleepers n = 11; older adults n = 34, mean age = 72.87; SD = 4.18, good sleepers n = 9). Ten non-linear features were extracted from multiband EEG analysis to feed several classifiers followed by a leave-one-out cross-validation. Brain state complexity accurately predicted (i) age in good sleepers, with 75% mean accuracy (across all channels) for lower frequencies (alpha, theta, and delta) and 95% accuracy at specific channels (temporal, parietal); and (ii) sleep quality in older groups with moderate accuracy (70 and 72%) across sub-bands with some regions showing greater differences. It also differentiated younger good sleepers from older poor sleepers with 85% mean accuracy across all sub-bands, and 92% at specific channels. Lower accuracy levels (<50%) were achieved in predicting sleep quality in younger adults. The algorithm discriminated older vs. younger groups excellently and could be used to explore intragroup differences in older adults to predict sleep intervention efficiency depending on their brain complexity.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation refers to an intentional or unintentional reduction in sleep time, resulting in insufficient sleep. It is often caused by sleep disorders, work demands (e.g., night shifts), and study pressure. Sleep deprivation promotes Aβ deposition and tau hyperphosphorylation, which is a risk factor for the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent research has demonstrated the potential involvement of sleep deprivation in both the pathogenesis and progression of AD through glial cell activation, the glial lymphatic system, orexin system, circadian rhythm system, inflammation, and the gut microbiota. Thus, investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying the association between sleep deprivation and AD is crucial, which may contribute to the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies for AD. This review aims to analyze the impact of sleep deprivation on AD, exploring the underlying pathological mechanisms that link sleep deprivation to the initiation and progression of AD, which offers a theoretical foundation for the development of drugs aimed at preventing and treating AD.

Abstract
Sleep duration has been associated with overweight/obesity. Since sleep quality and body composition alter during aging, we conducted this study to determine if sleep quality is linked to body composition components in elderly people. This is a cross-sectional study conducted on 305 Iranian community-dwelling elderly aged ≥ 65 years. Sleep quality and body composition components were evaluated using Pittsburgh sleep quality index and bioelectric impedance analysis, respectively. The association of sleep quality and body composition components was examined using linear regression analysis. The prevalence of poor sleep quality and overweight/obesity was 48.9% and 54.4% in men and 77.0% and 79.3% in women, respectively. Women had significantly higher scores in most PSQI items than men, indicating their worse sleep quality compared to men. Women also had significantly higher body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and visceral adipose tissue and lower skeletal muscle and fat-free mass percentages than men. In the adjusted regression model, men showed positive associations between the third tertile of poor sleep quality and BMI (B = 1.35; 95% CI 0.08-2.61) and waist circumference (B = 4.14; 95% CI 0.39-7.89), but they did not demonstrate an association between sleep quality and body composition components. In the adjusted regression model for women, there were positive associations for BMI (B = 1.21; 95% CI 0.34-2.07), waist circumference (B = 2.95; 95% CI 0.99-4.91), body fat percentage (B = 2.75; 95% CI 1.06-4.45), and visceral adipose tissue (B = 7.80; 95% CI 1.73-13.87); also there were negative associations for skeletal muscle (B = - 1.40; 95% CI - 2.39 - - 0.41) and fat-free mass (B = - 2.76; 95% CI - 4.46 - -1.07) percentages. Except for waist circumference, other variables differed between men and women (P < 0.001). Weight management, prevention of muscle wasting, and improvement of sleep quality should be considered in a consortium when designing healthcare strategies for the elderly.

Abstract
Background With the rapid growth of global aging, frailty has become a serious public health burden, affecting the life quality of older adults. Depressive symptoms (depression hereafter) and sleep quality are associated with frailty, but the pathways in which sleep quality and depression affect frailty remain unclear. Method This cross-sectional study included 1866 community-dwelling older adults. Demographic characteristics and health-related data of them was collected, and we also assessed frailty, depression, and sleep quality. Descriptive statistics were carried out and ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors correlated with frailty. Spearman correlation analysis and mediation analysis were employed to assess associations between sleep quality, depression and frailty. Two-sided p < 0.05 was considered as significant. Results The results showed that 4.1% older adults were frail and 31.0% were pre-frail. Ordinal logistic regression showed that age, consumptions of vegetables, exercise, sleep quality, depression, number of chronic diseases, chronic pain, and self-rated health were correlated with frailty. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that frailty was associated with depression and sleep quality. There was a mediation effect that sleep quality was a significant and positive predictor of frailty (total effect = 0.0545, 95% boot CI = 0.0449-0.0641), and depression was a mediator between sleep quality and frailty (mediation effect = 60.4%). Conclusion Depression and poor sleep quality may be early indicators of frailty in older adults. Improving the sleep quality and psychological state of older adults can improve frailty, which is beneficial for healthy aging.

Abstract
PURPOSE The behavioural activity pattern is a behavioural and biological 24-hour rhythm. Ageing, diseases and memory disorders can change this pattern. Home care staff can utilize knowledge about the behavioural activity pattern of elderly home care clients in many ways. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether home care staff could identify the behavioural activity pattern of elderly home care clients using activity sensors, namely, actigraphs and motion sensors, could identify the behavioural activity rhythms. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of four elderly home care clients and one elderly home rehabilitation client took part in the study. The participants wore actigraphs on their wrist and motion sensors were installed in their apartment. In addition to sensor data, home care staff answered one open-ended question during each home care visit. The data collection period was two weeks. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in the analysis. RESULTS The behavioural activity pattern was easy to identify from the motion sensor data, whereas actigraph data were difficult to interpret. The home care staff members' answers to open-ended questions reinforced the reliability of motion sensor data. CONCLUSIONS Motion sensors are relatively cheap, unobtrusive and reliable way to identify and detect changes in the behavioural activity patterns of elderly home care clients.Implications for rehabilitationMotion sensors are cheap, user-friendly and highly accepted technology for identifying and monitoring behavioural activity rhythm.Home care staff members can use the data about elderly home care client's behavioural activity rhythm to monitor deviations to the rhythm and detect changes in client's health.The information about behavioural activity rhythm can also be utilized in planning home care visits and interventions.

Abstract
Sleep medications often carry residual effects potentially affecting driving safety, warranting network meta-analysis (NMA). PubMed/EMBASE/TRID/Clinicaltrials.gov/WHO-ICTRP/WebOfScience were inquired for randomized controlled trials of hypnotic driving studies in persons with insomnia and healthy subjects up to 05/28/2023, considering the vehicle's standard deviation of lateral position - SDLP (Standardized Mean Difference/SMD) and driving impairment rates on the first morning (co-primary outcomes) and endpoint. Risk-of-bias, global/local inconsistencies were measured, and CINeMA was used to assess the confidence in the evidence. Of 4,805 identified records, 26 cross-over RCTs were included in the systematic review, of which 22 entered the NMA, focusing on healthy subjects only. After a single administration, most molecules paralleled the placebo, outperforming zopiclone regarding SDLP. In contrast, ramelteon 8 mg, daridorexant 100 mg, zolpidem 10 mg bedtime, zolpidem middle-of-the-night 10 mg and 20 mg, mirtazapine 15-30 mg, and triazolam 0.5 mg performed significantly worse than placebo. Lemborexant 2.5-5 mg, suvorexant 15-20 mg, and zolpidem 3.5 mg middle-of-the-night associated with lower impairment than zopiclone. Repeated administration (maximum follow-up time of ten days) caused fewer residual effects than acute ones, except for flurazepam. Heterogeneity and inconsistency were negligible. Confidence in the evidence was low/very low. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the main analyses. Most FDA-approved hypnotics overlapped placebo at in-label doses, outperforming zopiclone. Repeated administration for 15 days or less reduced residual effects, warranting further research on the matter.

Abstract
The most prominent symptom of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is cognitive decline; however, sleep and other circadian disruptions are also common in AD patients. Sleep disruptions have been connected with memory problems and therefore the changes in sleep patterns observed in AD patients may also actively contribute to cognitive decline. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms that connect sleep disruptions and AD are unclear. A characteristic feature of AD is the formation of plaques consisting of Amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides generated by cleavage of the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP). Besides Aβ, APP cleavage generates several other fragments, including the APP intracellular domain (AICD) that has been linked to transcriptional regulation and neuronal homeostasis. Here we show that overexpression of the AICD reduces the early evening expression of two core clock genes and disrupts the sleep pattern in flies. Analyzing the subcellular localization of the AICD in pacemaker neurons, we found that the AICD levels in the nucleus are low during daytime but increase at night. While this pattern of nuclear AICD persisted with age, the nighttime levels were higher in aged flies. Increasing the cleavage of the fly APP protein also disrupted AICD nuclear localization. Lastly, we show that the day/nighttime nuclear pattern of the AICD is also detectable in neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of mice and that it also changes with age. Together, these data suggest that AD-associated changes in APP processing and the subsequent changes in AICD levels may cause sleep disruptions in AD.

Abstract
Pain is a complex, subjective experience that can significantly impact quality of life, particularly in aging individuals, by adversely affecting physical and emotional well-being. Whereas acute pain usually serves a protective function, chronic pain is a persistent pathological condition that contributes to functional deficits, cognitive decline, and emotional disturbances in the elderly. Despite substantial progress that has been made in characterizing age-related changes in pain, complete mechanistic details of pain processing mechanisms in the aging patient remain unknown. Pain is particularly under-recognized and under-managed in the elderly, especially among patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD), and other age-related conditions. Furthermore, difficulties in assessing pain in patients with AD/ADRD and other age-related conditions may contribute to the familial caregiver burden. The purpose of this article is to discuss the mechanisms and risk factors for chronic pain development and persistence, with a particular focus on age-related changes. Our article also highlights the importance of caregivers working with aging chronic pain patients, and emphasizes the urgent need for increased legislative awareness and improved pain management in these populations to substantially alleviate caregiver burden.

Abstract
Previous studies have related single essential metal elements (EMEs) to sleep quality among older adults, however, the association of the EME mixture with sleep quality remained poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between single EMEs and the EME mixture and sleep quality in older adults living in Chinese communities. This study consisted of 3957 older adults aged 60 years or over. Urinary concentrations of cobalt (Co), vanadium (V), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), strontium (Sr), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) were detected using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Sleep quality was evaluated using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The associations of single EMEs and EME mixture with sleep quality were assessed using logistic regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models, respectively. Adjusted single-element logistic regression models showed that Mo (OR = 0.927, 95%CI:0.867-0.990), Sr (OR = 0.927, 95%CI:0.864-0.994), and Mg (OR = 0.934, 95%CI:0.873-0.997) were negatively related to poor sleep quality. BKMR models exhibited similar results. Also, higher levels of the EME mixture in urine were inversely related to the odds of poor sleep quality after adjustment for covariates, and Mo had the largest conditional posterior inclusion probability (condPIP) value in the mixture. Mo, Sr, and Mg were negatively related to poor sleep quality, separately and as the mixture. The EME mixture in urine was associated with decreased odds of poor sleep quality in older adults, and Mo was the greatest contributor within the mixture. Additional cohort research is warranted to clarify the relationship of multiple EMEs with sleep quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging and preoperative sleep disorders are the main risk factors affecting postoperative cognitive outcomes. However, the pathogenesis of delayed neurocognitive recovery after surgery remains ambiguous, and there is still a lack of potential biomarkers for delayed neurocognitive recovery in older adult patients with preoperative sleep disorders. Our study aimed to explore the relationship between melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) and delayed neurocognitive recovery early after surgery in older adult patients with preoperative sleep disorders. METHODS In this monocentric prospective observational study, 156 older adult patients (aged 65 years or older) with preoperative sleep disorders undergoing elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were included at an academic medical center in Inner Mongolia, China, from October 2021 to November 2022, and all patients underwent spinal anesthesia. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was applied to assess the preoperative sleep quality of all patients, and preoperative sleep disorders were defined as a score of PSQI >5. We measured the levels of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) MCH and plasma MCH of all patients. The primary outcome was delayed neurocognitive recovery early after surgery. All patients received cognitive function assessment through the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) 1 day before and 7 days after surgery (postoperative day 7 [POD7]). Delayed neurocognitive recovery was defined as a score of POD7 MoCA <26. The potential confounders included variables with P < .2 in the univariate logistic analysis, as well as the important risk factors of delayed neurocognitive recovery reported in the literature. Multivariable logistic regression model based on the Enter method assessed the association of MCH and delayed neurocognitive recovery in older adult patients with preoperative sleep disorders. RESULTS Fifty-nine (37.8%) older adult patients with preoperative sleep disorders experienced delayed neurocognitive recovery at POD7. Increase in CSF MCH levels (odds ratio [OR] for an increase of 1 pg/mL = 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.09-1.23, P < .001) and decrease in plasma MCH levels (OR for an increase of 1 pg/mL = 0.92, 95% CI, 0.86-0.98, P = .003) were associated with delayed neurocognitive recovery, after adjusting for age, sex, education, baseline MoCA scores, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade, and coronary heart disease (CHD). CONCLUSIONS In older adult patients with preoperative sleep disorders, MCH is associated with the occurrence of delayed neurocognitive recovery after surgery. Preoperative testing of CSF MCH or plasma MCH may increase the likelihood of identifying the high-risk population for delayed neurocognitive recovery in older adult patients with preoperative sleep disorders.

Abstract
Background: We examined the association between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) data in two older European populations. The second goal was to evaluate correlates of their quality of life (QoL). Methods: Diagnostic criteria of the International RLS Study Group (IRLSSG) and elements of CGA were used in this study. Results: Among the examined 246 participants, 77 (31.3%) suffered from RLS, more often in the UK (39.4%) than in Poland (25.4%) (p = 0.019). In the multivariate logistic regression model, female sex [OR (CI) = 3.29 (1.51-7.21); p = 0.0014], the number of medications per day [OR (CI) = 1.11 (1.02-1.20); p = 0.011] and alcohol consumption [OR (CI) = 5.41 (2.67-10.95); p < 0.001] increased the probability of RLS. Residing in Poland [OR (CI) = 3.06 (1.36-6.88); p = 0.005], the presence of RLS [OR (CI) = 2.90 (1.36-6.17); p = 0.004], chronic heart failure, [OR (CI) = 3.60 (1.75-7.41); p < 0.001], osteoarthritis [OR (CI) = 2.85 (1.47-5.49); p = 0.0016], and urinary incontinence [OR (CI) = 4.74 (1.87-11.9); p < 0.001] were associated with a higher probability of mobility dimension problems in the QoL. Higher physical activity was related to a lower probability of mobility problems [OR (CI) = 0.85 (0.78-0.92); p < 0.001]. Conclusions: female sex, the number of medications and alcohol consumption are independent correlates of RLS in older adults. RLS together with several chronic medical conditions and a low physical activity level were independent correlates of the mobility dimension of the QoL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multimorbidity, body pain, sleep disturbance, and depression are major clinical and public health challenges. This paper aimed to examine the associations of multimorbidity with body pain, sleep duration, and depression; and whether the associations varied by socioeconomic status. METHODS Data was derived from four waves of the nationally representative China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including participants aged 45 years and older in 2011. 12 physical non-communicable diseases and 1 mental chronic disease were used to measure multimorbidity. Educational attainment and annual per-capita household consumption expenditure were employed as proxies for socioeconomic status. RESULTS Of the 16,931 participants aged 45 + years old, the proportion of people with multimorbidity was 37.87% at baseline. The number of multimorbidity increased with older age and higher socioeconomic status. Multimorbidity was associated with more body pain (incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.45-1.61), and decreased sleep duration (β = -0.26, 95% CI = -0.36--0.15). Furthermore, multimorbidity was associated with increased depression risks (odds ratio (OR) = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.44-1.64, adjusted for sociodemographic variables), with the mediating effects of the number of body pain and sleep duration. The associations between multimorbidity and depression persisted among different socioeconomic groups. CONCLUSIONS Multimorbidity was associated with increased body pain, decreased sleep duration, and further led to increased depression risks. It is necessary to pay attention to the multimorbidity of middle-aged and older adults, relieve their body pain, guarantee sufficient sleep, so as to reduce depression risks.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study used National Health Insurance claims data from Korea to report the prevalence of sleep disorders and treatment status, including traditional Korean medicine, in the last 10 years. METHODS This is a retrospective cohort study in Korea. All diagnosis and prescription data, including herbal medicine claims, from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service from 2011 to 2020 were reviewed. Prevalence estimation, direct medical expenses and prescribed amounts for sleep disorders were recorded. RESULTS The prevalence of sleep disorders increased from 3 867 975 (7.62%) in 2011 to 7 446 846 (14.41%) in 2020, nearly doubling over 10 years. Insomnia was observed in 91.44% (n=9 011 692) of the patients. The mean number of hospital visits per patient for sleep disorders was 11.5 (±26.62). Benzodiazepines are the most commonly prescribed medications for sleep disorders, and gamma-isoyosan is the most frequently prescribed herbal medicine. CONCLUSIONS Sleep disorders are continuously increasing, as is the use of medical services-personal and social medical expenses are also increasing accordingly. Sleep disorders should be recognised as a significant health problem that needs to be actively addressed to improve quality of life.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to explore the predictive relationship between sleep quality and sense of coherence (SOC) and to examine a possible moderating role of mastery in this relationship. A three-wave longitudinal design was employed using a sample of 304 older adults aged 55-87 years old. Cross-lagged panel analyses and moderating effect analyses showed that sleep quality can predict the levels of SOC 6 months later, whereas SOC cannot predict sleep quality 6 months later. In addition, mastery can moderate the effect of sleep quality on SOC. Specifically, the lagged effects of sleep quality on SOC in older adults who had low levels of mastery were stronger than in those who had high levels of mastery. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights for understanding the predictive relationship between sleep quality and SOC and emphasise the moderating role of mastery. Also, our results offer important implications for enhancing the SOC in older adults by improving sleep quality and mastery.

Abstract
Background Sleep disturbances are an early indicator of cognitive impairment and exacerbate its progression. While pharmacological treatments for sleep disorders exist, their side-effect profile includes an increased risk of falls and the potential to exacerbate cognitive impairment. Non-pharmacological treatments such as physical exercise should be considered. However, uncertainties persist. We aimed to assess the potential benefits of exercise interventions on sleep in patients with cognitive impairment and determine the specific effects of various exercise modalities. Materials and methods A systematic search was performed on seven databases for eligible studies published before Nov 2022. Randomized controlled trials of exercise for patients with cognitive impairment (mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease) were included. All analyses were conducted using RevMan version 5.4. Meta-analysis and The Grading of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evaluations (GRADE) quality ratings were performed on sleep quality and objective sleep data. Results A total of 8 randomized controlled trials were included with a sample size of 486 subjects. For patients with cognitive impairment, physical exercise had a beneficial effect on sleep quality [MD = -3.55 (-5.57, -1.32), Z = 3.13, p = 0.002] and total sleep time [MD = 33.77 (23.92, 43.62), Z = 6.72, P < 0.00001]. No improvement was found in sleep efficiency and nocturnal awakening time. Subgroup analysis showed that multi-component exercise produced superior results. Conclusion Physical exercise may improve sleep quality and total sleep time for patients with cognitive impairment. Multi-component exercise designed individually is more effective. Large-scale randomized controlled trials with objective sleep outcome measurements are warranted.Clinical trial registration: https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/, identifier: CRD42022377221.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over recent decades, a growing body of evidence has emerged linking the composition of the gut microbiota to sleep regulation. Interestingly, the prevalence of sleep disorders is commonly related to cardiometabolic comorbidities such as diabetes, impaired lipid metabolism, and metabolic syndrome (MetS). In this complex scenario, the role of the gut-brain axis as the main communicating pathway between gut microbiota and sleep regulation pathways in the brain reveals some common host-microbial biomarkers in both sleep disturbances and MetS. As the biological mechanisms behind this complex interacting network of neuroendocrine, immune, and metabolic pathways are not fully understood yet, the present systematic review aims to describe common microbial features between these two unrelated chronic conditions. RESULTS This systematic review highlights a total of 36 articles associating the gut microbial signature with MetS or sleep disorders. Specific emphasis is given to studies evaluating the effect of dietary patterns, dietary supplementation, and probiotics on MetS or sleep disturbances. CONCLUSIONS Dietary choices promote microbial composition and metabolites, causing both the amelioration and impairment of MetS and sleep homeostasis.

Abstract
Sleep is essential for human well-being, yet the quality and quantity of sleep reduce as age advances. Older persons (>65 years old) are more at risk of disorders accompanied and/or exacerbated by poor sleep. Furthermore, evidence supports a bidirectional relationship between disrupted sleep and Alzheimer's disease (AD) or related dementias. Orexin/hypocretin neuropeptides stabilize wakefulness, and several orexin receptor antagonists (ORAs) are approved for the treatment of insomnia in adults. Dysregulation of the orexin system occurs in aging and AD, positioning ORAs as advantageous for these populations. Indeed, several clinical studies indicate that ORAs are efficacious hypnotics in older persons and dementia patients and, as in adults, are generally well tolerated. ORAs are likely to be more effective when administered early in sleep/wake dysregulation to reestablish good sleep/wake-related behaviors and reduce the accumulation of dementia-associated proteinopathic substrates. Improving sleep in aging and dementia represents a tremendous opportunity to benefit patients, caregivers, and health systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies across multiple countries reveal that depression and sleep disorders can lead to cognitive decline. This study aims to speculate on the effect of different sources of indoor air pollution on cognition and to explore the mediation effect of depression and sleep disorders on cognition when exposed to indoor air pollution. We hypothesize that an older adult experiences higher cognitive decline from indoor pollution when mediated by depression and sleep disorders. METHODS We use data from Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI), 2017-2018, and employ a multiple mediation model to understand the relationship between indoor air pollution and cognition through sleep disorders and depression while adjusting for possible confounders. Sensitivity analysis was applied to see the effect of different sources of indoor pollution (cooking fuel, indoor smoke products, and secondhand smoke) on cognitive performance. RESULTS The effect of three sources of indoor pollutants on cognition increased when combined, indicating stronger cognitive decline. Unclean cooking practices, indoor smoke (from incense sticks and mosquito coils), and secondhand smoke were strongly associated with sleep disorders and depression among older adults. Indoor air pollution was negatively associated with cognitive health (β= -0.38) while positively associated with depression (β= 0.18) and sleep disorders (β= 0.038) acting as mediators. Sensitivity analysis explained 45% variability while adjusting for confounders. CONCLUSION The study lays a foundation for future investigations into the nexus of indoor pollution and mental health. It is essential to formulate policies to reduce exposure to varying sources of indoor air pollutants and improve screening for mental health services as a public health priority.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this follow-up study was to investigate whether loneliness and social isolation in a sample of older adults, mean age of 67.4 years at baseline examination, were associated with sleep disturbances at re-examination at a mean age of 76.4 years. Methods The study sample consisted of 2897 participants. Data on loneliness, social isolation, and sleep disturbances were collected through questionnaires and medical examinations. Logistic regression models were constructed to identify associations between levels of loneliness and social isolation at baseline and sleep disturbances at follow-up. Sociodemographic and health-related confounding factors were controlled for in the models. Results Sleep disturbances were reported by 25.6% (95% CI: 24.0%-27.2%) at baseline and 23.7% (95% CI: 22.1%-25.3%) at re-examination. Odds ratios for sleep disturbances at re-examination in relation to not being lonely or socially isolated were as follows: single occasions of loneliness (OR: 1.37, 95% CI: 1.05-1.78), recurring periods/constant loneliness (OR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.01-1.99), less severe social isolation (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 0.78-1.79), and severe social isolation (OR: 1.88, 95% CI: 1.01-3.49). Discussion Sleep disturbances are common among older adults and are associated with loneliness and social isolation. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the potential effects of loneliness and social isolation when investigating sleep disturbances in older adults.

Abstract
Background: Poor sleep quality is prevalent in older people and impairs their quality of life. Various studies show an association between sleep disorders and altered levels of inflammatory cytokines. The cytokine IL-1β has been shown to display both somnogenic and insomnia-promoting effects in experimental animals. Objectives: to evaluate the relationship between insomnia and salivary IL-1β concentration and the role of associated factors such as the symptoms of depression, use of hypnotics, intake of caffeinated beverages, smoking, and alcohol use in older individuals. An analytical, cross-sectional, observational research was carried out with a population of community-dwelling individuals over 60 years of age in Valencia (Spain). Sleep quality was measured with the Athens insomnia scale (AIS) and depressive symptoms with Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Results: 287 individuals participated in the study (mean age 74.08 years (76.7% women). 41.5% of the participants had insomnia, 36.9% took drugs for sleep problems, and 32.4% had relevant depressive symptoms. There was a significant inverse correlation between the IL-1β and total AIS score (rho = -0.302, p < 0.001), the sleep difficulty subdomain (rho = -0.259, p < 0.001), and the daytime sleepiness subdomain (rho = -0.322, p < 0.001). No significant correlation was observed between GDS and salivary IL-1β concentration. The IL-1β concentration was significantly lower in individuals taking drugs for sleeping compared with those not taking those drugs (1.11 ± 0.09 and 1.48 ± 0.08, respectively; p = 0.001). Regarding the AIS score, there was no significant difference in marital status, smoking, or the number of cups of tea or cola drinks, but there was a significant association with alcohol intake (p = 0.019) and in the number of daily intakes of coffee (p = 0.030). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis of IL-1β for diagnosis of moderate-severe insomnia showed an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.78 (95% confidence interval 0.71-0.85). At the cut-off of 0.83 pg/µL of Il-1β, it had a sensitivity of 70.3% and a specificity of 69.8%.

Abstract
Introduction The rise in the elderly population has brought attention to mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Sleep disorders also affect many older adults, indicating an important area of research for disturbed sleep and faster brain aging. This population-based study aimed to investigate the association of several sleep indicators with cognitive performance. Methods This cross-sectional study focused on adults over 50 in the Ardakan Cohort Study on Aging (ACSA). MCI was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Abbreviated Mental Test score (AMTS) in literate and illiterate individuals. Sleep characteristics were collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and Berlin questionnaire. The logistic regression models were used to analyze the data. Results Overall, 3,380 literate and 1,558 illiterate individuals were included. In both groups, participants with MCI had a significantly higher PSQI global score (p < 0.05). Also, among the literate individuals, a significantly higher risk of having sleep-disordered breathing and poor sleep quality was observed in participants with MCI (p < 0.05). In illiterate individuals, higher sleep latency than 15 min increased odds of MCI (p < 0.05). However, after adjusting for all variables, only literate individuals with a sleep duration of more than 8 h had 66 percent increased odds of having MCI (p = 0.033). Conclusion Sleep duration might be associated with cognitive function in the older Iranian population. Our findings underscore the importance of considering sleep patterns in relation to cognitive health.

Abstract
Various developments have been observed in the treatment of cancer patients, such as higher survival rates and better treatment outcomes. However, expecting similar outcomes in older patients remains a challenge. The main reason for this conclusion is the exclusion of older people from clinical trials for cancer drugs, as well as other factors, such as comorbidity, side effects, age-related frailties and their willingness to undergo multiple treatments. However, the discovery of new techniques and drug combinations has led to a significant improvement in the survival of the elderly population after the onset of the disease. On the other hand, cancer treatments have not become more complex for the younger population when compared to the older population, as the younger population tends to respond well to treatment trials and their physiological conditions are stable in response to treatments. In summary, this review correlates recent cancer treatment strategies and the corresponding responses and survival outcomes of older and younger patients.

Abstract
Sleep-wake disturbances are common in neurodegenerative diseases and may occur years before the clinical diagnosis, potentially either representing an early stage of the disease itself or acting as a pathophysiological driver. Therefore, discovering biomarkers that identify individuals with sleep-wake disturbances who are at risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases will allow early diagnosis and intervention. Given the association between sleep and neurodegeneration, the most frequently analyzed fluid biomarkers in people with sleep-wake disturbances to date include those directly associated with neurodegeneration itself, such as neurofilament light chain, phosphorylated tau, amyloid-beta and alpha-synuclein. Abnormalities in these biomarkers in patients with sleep-wake disturbances are considered as evidence of an underlying neurodegenerative process. Levels of hormonal sleep-related biomarkers such as melatonin, cortisol and orexin are often abnormal in patients with clinical neurodegenerative diseases, but their relationships with the more standard neurodegenerative biomarkers remain unclear. Similarly, it is unclear whether other chronobiological/circadian biomarkers, such as disrupted clock gene expression, are causal factors or a consequence of neurodegeneration. Current data would suggest that a combination of fluid biomarkers may identify sleep-wake disturbances that are most predictive for the risk of developing neurodegenerative disease with more optimal sensitivity and specificity.

Abstract
Poor sleep health is common in older adults and is associated with negative health outcomes. However, the relationship between caffeine consumption and sleep health at an older age is poorly understood. This study investigated the association between caffeine consumption and sleep health in community-dwelling older males and females in The Netherlands. Cross-sectional analyses were performed using data from 1256 participants aged 61-101 years from the Longitudinal Ageing Study Amsterdam. Self-reported questions assessed sleep disturbances (including sleep latency, continuity, and early awakening), sleep duration, and perceived sleep quality. Caffeine consumption was determined with questions about frequency, quantity, and type of coffee and tea consumption. Logistic and linear regression models were used, controlling for potential confounders, and interaction by sex and age was tested. Caffeine consumption showed significant interactions with sex (p < 0.005) in association with sleep health outcomes. Older females who abstained from caffeine consumption reported more sleep disturbances (β = 0.64 [95%CI 0.13; 1.15]) and had greater odds of short sleep duration (<7 h/day) (OR = 2.26 [95% CI 1.22; 4.20]) compared to those who consumed caffeine. No associations were observed for long sleep duration (>8 h/day) and perceived sleep quality. No associations were observed in older males. Caffeine abstinence was associated with more sleep disturbances and short sleep duration in older females, but not in males. The observed association in older females may reflect reverse causation, suggesting that females may have different motivations for discontinuing caffeine consumption than males.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep quality has been linked to depression in older adults, but results of the association between daytime napping and depression remains limited and conflicting. Moreover, whether the association of daytime napping with depression varies by nighttime sleep quality is unclear. Hence, we examined the associations of daytime napping and nighttime sleep quality with depressive symptoms in older Chinese. METHODS A total of 16,786 participants aged ≥50 from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study second-round examination (2008-2012) were included in this cross-sectional study. Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), napping and demographic data were collected by face-to-face interview using a computerized questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratio (OR) of depressive symptoms for napping and sleep quality. RESULTS The prevalence of depressive symptoms (GDS score > 5) and poor global sleep quality (PSQI score ≥ 6) was 5.3 and 31.9%, respectively. Compared to non-nappers, nappers showed significantly higher odds of depressive symptoms, with OR (95% confidence interval (CI)) being 1.28 (1.11-1.49). The odds of depressive symptoms for daytime napping varied by nighttime sleep quality (P for interaction = 0.04). In good-quality sleepers, compared to non-nappers, nappers had significantly higher odds of depressive symptoms, with OR (95% CI) being 1.57 (1.23-2.01), whereas no association was found in poor-quality sleepers (OR = 1.13, 0.94-1.36). CONCLUSION Napping was associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms in older people, and the association was stronger in good-quality sleepers.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Hip fractures are commonly found in elderly patients, and often result in chronic pain and decreased physical function, as well as worsening of overall health. It is known that early surgical intervention during the acute phase and rehabilitation are important for improving clinical outcomes for these patients. However, the importance of management for improving the quality of life of these patients is becoming more emphasized. Studies on changes in sleep patterns after hip fractures are rare overseas. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of sleep disturbance in patients with hip fractures and to analyze the changes in sleep disturbance after surgery by comparing the preoperative and postoperative results. Materials and Methods: During the period from August 2022 to January 2023, patients who underwent surgical treatment for hip fractures and were recruited into the REAL Hip Cohort were selected as research subjects. The sleep survey was conducted using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The PSQI is composed of 18 questions, each divided into areas of sleep quality, sleep latency, duration, efficiency, disturbance, use of medication, and daytime dysfunction. Each area is scored 0-3 points and the total is 0-21. A score greater than five indicates sleep disorder. The PSQI was surveyed during hospitalization and three months after surgery for post-fracture sleep status. To analyze changes before and after the fracture, paired T-tests and chi-square tests were performed. Results: From August 2022 to January 2023, a total of 40 patients who were recruited into the REAL Hip Cohort responded to the PSQI survey. The average age was 77.4 years and 36 were female. Sleep quality worsened from 0.75 ± 1.0 before surgery to 1.4 ± 1.0 three months after surgery (p = 0.019), and sleep efficiency also worsened from 0.4 ± 0.6 to 1.4 ± 1.0 (p < 0.001). The PSQI increased from an average of 5.2 ± 2.8 before surgery to 8.2 ± 4.2 three months after surgery (p = 0.007), and the number of patients who could be diagnosed with sleep disorders also increased from 12 (40%) to 24 (60%) (p = 0.030). Conclusions: A decline in overall sleep status was observed in patients in a survey on sleep patterns three months after hip fracture. Additional management is needed to improve their sleep patterns.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate sleep disorders and associated factors in patients with rheumatoid-arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD). METHODS We performed an observational study of 35 patients with RA-ILD (cases) and 35 age- and sex-matched RA patients without ILD (controls). We evaluated sleep disorders (Oviedo Sleep Questionnaire), positive psychological factors (resilience using the Wagnild and Young Resilience Scale, emotional intelligence using the 24-item Trait Meta-Mood Scale), anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), quality of life (36-item short-form survey), and fatigue (Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Questionnaire). Other variables studied included the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and RA activity according to the DAS28-ESR. RESULTS Compared to the controls, the cases were characterized by poorer sleep quality with a higher prevalence of insomnia (42% vs. 20%; p = 0.039), greater severity of insomnia (p = 0.001), and lower sleep satisfaction (p = 0.033). They also had poorer resilience and emotional recovery and more severe anxiety and depression. A diagnosis of ILD was the only factor independently associated with the three dimensions of sleep quality. The predictors of poorer sleep satisfaction in patients with RA-ILD were age (β = -0.379), DAS28-ESR (β = -0.331), and usual interstitial pneumonia pattern (β = -0.438). The predictors of insomnia were DAS28-ESR (β = 0.294), resilience (β = -0.352), and CCI (β = 0.377). CONCLUSIONS RA-ILD is associated with significant sleep disorders. RA-ILD seems to be an independent risk factor for sleep alterations, with a greater impact on insomnia. Age, disease activity, and comorbidity also play a role in sleep disorders in patients with RA-ILD.

Abstract
Women of advancing age can suffer from an array of sleep disorders. We review the changes in sleep architecture, the impact of hormonal changes on sleep, and the various sleep disorders in women of advancing age. A focused history in this population should include the temporal relation to menopause and comorbid conditions. Treatment options should involve patient preference and review of current medications and comorbid conditions to optimize sleep in this population.

Abstract
Yoga Nidra is a promising technique through which body is consciously simulated into a profound relaxation state similar to attained during naturally occurring deep sleep. It is aimed to attain complete emotional, physical, and mental relaxation of body and mind. In postmenopausal phase of life, regular practice of Yoga Nidra at home preferably in morning, can help in reduction in anxiety and pain associated with early morning awakenings. This nonpharmacological technique has a therapeutic potential to improve sleep quality and quantity, and overall well-being.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a frequently observed and remarkably incapacitating disorder worldwide. As a multisystem disorder, OSA has been linked to a plethora of clinical parameters though physical parameters like muscle strength have been scantily studied. Hand grip strength (HGS) is a practical marker of physical function that has been associated with mortality and an array of clinical outcomes as well as physiological parameters like sleep duration. A few seminal studies have observed no link between HGS and OSA severity while no studies evaluated the relationship between objectively determined sleep duration and HGS in OSA. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to evaluate the HGS indices among both OSA severity groups and objectively determined sleep duration groups in OSA. METHODS 111 treatment-naïve mostly middle-aged individuals with OSA (86 males) were recruited in a tertiary sleep center. Three OSA severity groups were determined by the Apnea-Hypopnea Index while three sleep duration groups were objectively determined by Total Sleep Time (TST). Dominant and non-dominant maximum and average HGS were calculated using a digital hand dynamometer. RESULTS Short-sleeper individuals with OSA were found to have lower HGS indices than intermediate or sufficient sleepers with OSA while no differences in HGS indices among OSA severity groups were observed. All HGS indices correlated with TST. CONCLUSIONS Future insights can be gleaned from the present results regarding the conceivably transdiagnostic relationship between sleep duration and HGS as well as the potential use of HGS as a marker in OSA.

Abstract
Noise exposure in the workplace is one of the most common occupational hazards, which can affect sleep in the human. The effects of occupational noise can be different than that of environmental or social noise. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review on the effects of occupational noise on various characteristics of sleep. In this study, three electronic bibliographic databases (Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science) were systematically searched up to 14 December 2022. The search algorithm included two sets of keywords and possible combinations. The first group was keywords related to occupational noise, and the second group was keywords related to sleep. A total of 2082 articles were identified in the initial search, and 2034 articles were excluded based on exclusion criteria or lacking inclusion criteria. Finally, 48 articles met the inclusion criteria and were selected for final review. Among 13 articles identified as high quality, all studies (100%) showed that noise had a significant effect on sleep among workers in various occupations. Among 17 articles with moderate quality, thirteen studies (76.47%) indicated that noise had a significant effect on sleep among workers in different occupations. Among 18 low-quality articles, fifteen studies (83.33%) showed that noise had a significant effect on sleep. 41 out of 48 studies (85.42%) found that occupational noise can negatively impact sleep among employees in various occupations. There are at least four potential pathways for this effect, including the physiological effect of daytime noise exposure, the psychological effect of daytime noise exposure, the effect of nighttime noise exposure, and the effect of hearing problems due to noise.
