Abstract
Rapid postharvest quality deterioration of button mushroom as fruit body surface browning brings about senescence development and limits its distribution potential and postharvest storage. In this investigation, 0.5 mM of NaHS as the optimum concentration for H2S fumigation was applied to retain the quality of Agaricus bisporus mushrooms concerning some qualitative and biochemical attributes evaluation throughout 15 storage-day at 4 °C and 80-90% relative humidity. In H2S fumigated mushrooms, pileus browning index, weight loss and softening decreased, concomitant with higher cell membrane stability as revealed by subsidiary electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2 contents compared to the control during the cold storage period. H2S fumigation boosted total phenolics, as presented by the enhanced phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity and total antioxidant scavenging activity, while polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity diminished. Moreover, in H2S fumigated mushrooms not only peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities but also ascorbic acid and glutathione (GSH) contents increased, even though glutathione (GSSG) content declined. The raised endogenous H2S level prompted by greater cystathionine ß-synthase (CBS), cystathionine ?-lyase (CSE), cysteine synthase (CS), L-cysteine desulfhydrases (LCD) and D-cysteine desulfhydrases (DCD) enzymes activities until 10d in fumigated mushrooms. In general, the increase in endogenous H2S biogenesis promoted by H2S fumigation in button mushrooms resulted in retarding senescence development, maintaining redox balance by boosting multiple enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants defense parameters.

Abstract
In recent decades, there has been increasing interest in elucidating the role of sulfur-containing compounds in plant metabolism, particularly emphasizing their function as signaling molecules. Among these, thiocyanate (SCN-), a compound imbued with sulfur and nitrogen, has emerged as a significant environmental contaminant frequently detected in irrigation water. This compound is known for its potential to adversely impact plant growth and agricultural yield. Although adopting exogenous SCN- as a nitrogen source in plant cells has been the subject of thorough investigation, the fate of sulfur resulting from the assimilation of exogenous SCN- has not been fully explored. There is burgeoning curiosity in probing the fate of SCN- within plant systems, especially considering the possible generation of the gaseous signaling molecule, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) during the metabolism of SCN-. Notably, the endogenous synthesis of H2S occurs predominantly within chloroplasts, the cytosol, and mitochondria. In contrast, the production of H2S following the assimilation of exogenous SCN- is explicitly confined to chloroplasts and mitochondria. This phenomenon indicates complex interplay and communication among various subcellular organelles, influencing signal transduction and other vital physiological processes. This review, augmented by a small-scale experimental study, endeavors to provide insights into the functional characteristics of H2S signaling in plants subjected to SCN--stress. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the occurrence and trajectory of endogenous H2S and H2S derived from SCN--assimilation within plant organisms was performed, providing a focused lens for a comprehensive examination of the multifaceted roles of H2S in rice plants. By delving into these dimensions, our objective is to enhance the understanding of the regulatory mechanisms employed by the gasotransmitter H2S in plant adaptations and responses to SCN--stress, yielding invaluable insights into strategies for plant resilience and adaptive capabilities.

Abstract
Salinity stress is a well-known abiotic stress that has been shown to have a negative impact on crop growth, production, and soil richness. The current study was intended to ameliorate salt stress in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.), keeping in mind the detrimental influence of salt stress. A pot experimentation was executed on B. juncea to examine the efficacy of exogenous application of triacontanol (TRIA) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) (NaHS donor), either alone or in combination, on growth attributes, metabolites, and antioxidant defense system exposed to salt stress at three distinct concentrations (50, 100 and 150 mM NaCl). Increase in the concentration of oxidative markers (malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide) was found which results in inhibited growth of B. juncea. The growth characteristics of plant, such as root and shoot length, fresh and dry weight under salt stress, were improved by foliar application of TRIA (150 µM) and H2S (25 µM) alone as well as in combination. Additionally, salt stress reduced the levels of protein, metabolites (flavonoids, phenolic and anthocyanin), antioxidant enzyme activity including that of ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, polyphenol oxidase and guaiacol peroxidase as well as the level of ascorbic acid and glutathione (non-enzymatic antioxidants). However, application of TRIA and H2S alone or in grouping substantially raised the content of protein, metabolites and antioxidant defense system in plants of B. juncea.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is involved in multiple processes during plant growth and development. D-cysteine desulfhydrase (DCD) can produce H2S with D-cysteine as the substrate; however, the potential developmental roles of DCD have not been explored during the tomato lifecycle. In the present study, SlDCD2 showed increasing expression during fruit ripening. Compared with the control fruits, the silencing of SlDCD2 by pTRV2-SlDCD2 accelerated fruit ripening. A SlDCD2 gene-edited mutant was constructed by CRISPR/Cas9 transformation, and the mutant exhibited accelerated fruit ripening, decreased H2S release, higher total cysteine and ethylene contents, enhanced chlorophyll degradation and increased carotenoid accumulation. Additionally, the expression of multiple ripening-related genes, including NYC1, PAO, SGR1, PDS, PSY1, ACO1, ACS2, E4, CEL2, and EXP was enhanced during the dcd2 mutant tomato fruit ripening. Compared with the wild-type fruits, SlDCD2 mutation induced H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation in fruits, which led to an imbalance in reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism. A correlation analysis indicated that H2O2 content was strongly positively correlated with carotenoids content, ethylene content and ripening-related gene expression and negatively correlated with the chlorophyll content. Additionally, the dcd2 mutant showed earlier leaf senescence, which may be due to disturbed ROS homeostasis. In short, our findings show that SlDCD2 is involved in H2S generation and that the reduction in endogenous H2S production in the dcd2 mutant causes accelerated fruit ripening and premature leaf senescence. Additionally, decreased H2S in the dcd2 mutant causes excessive H2O2 accumulation and increased ethylene release, suggesting a role of H2S and SlDCD2 in modulating ROS homeostasis and ethylene biosynthesis.

Abstract
The demand for organic table grapes is increasing worldwide. However, comprehensive information of quality parameters and phytochemical compounds in organically grown fruit remain unclear. Furthermore, table grapes are perishable and postharvest quality retention and waste prevention is very important. In this study we have compared the differences between organic and non-organic table grapes in terms of phytochemical compounds and quality parameters as well as the changes in the expression levels of pathogen related and lytic genes during storage. Organic fruit showed higher levels of phenolics, flavonoids, caffeic acid, hydrogen peroxide, protein content, antioxidant and anti-stress enzymes and total antioxidant activities at harvest and during storage. Although, the expression levels of polygalactronases, pectin methyl esterase, chitinase and glucanase genes was lower in organically grown table grapes at harvest, but the expression of all these genes was significantly increased during cold storage. After 60 days of cold storage the expression levels of pectin methyl esterase, chitinase and glucanase genes was significantly higher than the conventionally grown grape berries in organic ones. The highest expression of polygalacturonase was recorded in organic samples after 30 days of storage. There was no significant difference between the two types of table grapes for decay extension and tissue deterioration rate. The results of this study indicate that due to higher levels of phytochemicals and antioxidant compounds the organic table grapes have a higher nutritional quality. Furthermore, the increase in PR and pectolytic genes expression levels is enough for decreasing the fruit susceptibility to decay pathogens and enhancing the postharvest life of organic grapes.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is known to have a positive effect on the postharvest storage of vegetables and fruits, but limited results are available on its influence in fruit flavor quality. Here, we presented the effect of H2S on the flavor quality of tomato fruit during postharvest. H2S decreased the content of fructose, glucose, carotene and lycopene but increased that of soluble protein, organic acid, malic acid and citric acid. These differences were directly associated with the expression of their metabolism-related genes. Moreover, H2S treatment raised the contents of total phenolics, total flavonoids and most phenolic compounds, and up-regulated the expression level of their metabolism-related genes (PAL5, 4CL, CHS1, CHS2, F3H and FLS). However, the effects of the H2S scavenger hypotaurine on the above flavor quality parameters were opposite to that of H2S, thus confirming the role of H2S in tomato flavor quality. Thus, these results provide insight into the significant roles of H2S in tomato fruit quality regulation and implicate the potential application of H2S in reducing the flavor loss of tomato fruit during postharvest.

Abstract
Although fresh-cut button mushrooms are popular with consumers, quality deterioration presents a significant shelf-life challenge. In this study, fresh-cut button mushrooms were treated with 0.25 g/L l-cysteine (l-Cys) and evaluated in terms of quality, physiology, and transcriptome sequencing. The results indicated that l-Cys application significantly delayed the browning degree of fresh-cut button mushrooms and reduced weight loss. l-Cys treatment reduced the malondialdehyde content, lipoxygenase activity, and reducing sugar levels while enhancing the soluble protein and total phenolic content. Furthermore, l-Cys treatment reduced the O2- generation rate and H2O2 accumulation while enhancing the catalase activity. Moreover, l-Cys improved the superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activities while reducing those of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase. Additionally, l-Cys treatment increased endogenous H2S production and AbCBS enzyme activity while decreasing AbCSE enzyme activity. Notably, additional treatment with 1 mM propargylglycine significantly reduced the effect of l-Cys. Moreover, transcriptome sequencing analysis indicated that the differentially expressed genes in the l-Cys group were primarily related to the reactive oxygen species metabolism, oxidoreductase process, membrane integrality, and sulfur metabolism. These findings suggested that l-Cys treatment delayed the aging and extended the shelf life of fresh-cut button mushrooms by regulating the active oxygen species metabolism and water loss and stimulating endogenous H2S production.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is a gasotransmitter, can be biosynthesized and participates in various physiological and biochemical processes in plants. H2S also positively affects plants' adaptation to abiotic stresses. Here, we summarize the specific ways in which H2S is endogenously synthesized and metabolized in plants, along with the agents and methods used for H2S research, and outline the progress of research on the regulation of H2S on plant metabolism and morphogenesis, abiotic stress tolerance, and the series of different post-translational modifications (PTMs) in which H2S is involved, to provide a reference for future research on the mechanism of H2S action.

Abstract
Table grapes are susceptible to external pathogens during postharvest storage. The resulting continuous oxidative stress causes damage and aging, thereby reducing the defense against disease. In this study, the effect of biocontrol yeast T-2 on the storage performance of grapes was evaluated. After T-2 treatment, the grapefruits rot rate and lesion diameter caused by Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea) were significantly decreased at 2-5 days after inoculation (DAI). Additionally, the browning rate and shedding rate of grapefruit during storage were significantly reduced at 2-5 DAI, and the weight loss rate was significantly reduced at 3-5 DAI. The decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) content in grapefruits at 1-5 DAI with T-2 indicated a reduction in oxidative damage. Furthermore, the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), phenylalanin ammonia-lyase (PAL) were significantly increased during most storage time after being treated with T-2. Moreover, the contents of total phenolics and flavonoids and the expression levels of key enzyme genes in metabolic pathways were increased after T-2 treatment during most postharvest storage time, providing evidence that T-2 changed the biological process of phenolic flavonoid metabolism. The increase in enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants after treatment with T-2 reflected the strengthening of the antioxidant system, hence postponing fruit senescence and promoting storage performance under the stress of B. cinerea.

Abstract
Melatonin (MEL), a ubiquitous indolamine molecule, has gained interest in the last few decades due to its regulatory role in plant metabolism. Likewise, nitric oxide (NO), a gasotransmitter, can also affect plant molecular pathways due to its function as a signaling molecule. Both MEL and NO can interact at multiple levels under abiotic stress, starting with their own biosynthetic pathways and inducing a particular signaling response in plants. Moreover, their interaction can result in the formation of NOmela, a very recently discovered nitrosated form of MEL with promising roles in plant physiology. This review summarizes the role of NO and MEL molecules during plant development and fruit ripening, as well as their interactions. Due to the impact of climate-change-related abiotic stresses on agriculture, this review also focuses on the role of these molecules in mediating abiotic stress tolerance and the main mechanisms by which they operate, from the upregulation of the entire antioxidant defense system to the post-translational modifications (PTMs) of important molecules. Their individual interaction and crosstalk with phytohormones and H2S are also discussed. Finally, we introduce and summarize the little information available about NOmela, an emerging and still very unknown molecule, but that seems to have a stronger potential than MEL and NO separately in mediating plant stress response.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) is a gaseous molecule and originates endogenously in plants. It is considered a potential signalling agent in various physiological processes of plants. Numerous reports have examined the role of H2 S in fruit ripening and in enhancing fruit quality traits. H2 S coordinates the fruit antioxidant system, fruit ripening phytohormones, such as ethylene and abscisic acid, together with other ripening-related signalling molecules, including nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide. Although many studies have increased understanding of various aspects of this complex network, there is a gap in understanding crosstalk of H2 S with key players of fruit ripening, postharvest senescence and fruit metabolism. This review focused on deciphering fruit H2 S metabolism, signalling and its interaction with other ripening-related signalling molecules during fruit ripening and postharvest storage. Moreover, we also discuss how H2 S can be used as a tool for improving fruit quality and productivity and reducing postharvest loss of perishable fruits.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) has emerged as a potential regulator of plant defence against different abiotic stresses. As a climacteric fruit, banana undergoes oxidative stresses shortly after harvest, resulting in faster ripening and senescence. This work examines the effects of vacuum infiltrated H2 S on ripening inhibition of banana. Banana fruits were vacuum infiltrated with 1 mm H2 S. Effects on oxidative stress markers, physiological changes, bioactive compounds and antioxidant potentials were examined during storage at 25 °C and 75-80% RH. Results indicate that treated fruits were less affected by oxidative stress, as evident by lower accumulation of ROS (superoxide and peroxide ions), elevated phenols content and antioxidant capacity. The ripening inhibitory effects of H2 S delayed chlorophyll loss and reduced ethylene and CO2 production. H2 S infiltration also reduced MDA accumulation and electrolytic leakage, resulting in longer shelf life. Vacuum infiltration with H2 S had a protective effect on postharvest banana through overcoming the deleterious effect of ROS and strengthening antioxidant potential. Thus, this method could be promising for enhanced preservation of banana during storage.

Abstract
Advances in nanotechnology have enabled the rapid development of stimuli-responsive therapeutic nanomaterials for precision gas therapy. Hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) is a significant gaseous signaling molecule with intrinsic biochemical properties, which exerts its various physiological effects under both normal and pathological conditions. Various nanomaterials with H2 S-responsive properties, as new-generation therapeutic agents, are explored to guide therapeutic behaviors in biological milieu. The cross disciplinary of H2 S is an emerging scientific hotspot that studies the chemical properties, biological mechanisms, and therapeutic effects of H2 S. This review summarizes the state-of-art research on H2 S-related nanomedicines. In particular, recent advances in H2 S therapeutics for cancer, such as H2 S-mediated gas therapy and H2 S-related synergistic therapies (combined with chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and chemodynamic therapy) are highlighted. Versatile imaging techniques for real-time monitoring H2 S during biological diagnosis are reviewed. Finally, the biosafety issues, current challenges, and potential possibilities in the evolution of H2 S-based therapy that facilitate clinical translation to patients are discussed.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been identified as an important gaseous signal molecule in plants. Here, we investigated the effects of H2S on postharvest senescence and antioxidant metabolism of Lingwu Long Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba cv. Mill) fruits (LLJF). Fumigation of Jujube fruits with H2S released from 0.4 mm NaHS could significantly prolong the postharvest shelf life of jujube fruits, reduce the decay rate of fruit, the weight loss of fruit, and inhibit the fruit loss, hardness, color, soluble solids, and titratable acidity. Compared with the control group, exogenous H2S fumigation significantly decreased the loss of chlorophyll, carotenoids, soluble protein, ascorbic acid, phenols, and flavonoids in jujube fruits during post-harvest storage. At the same time, H2S could significantly delay the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion (O2∙−) and promote catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), peroxidase (POD) activity, and inhibit polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity. To summarize, H2S can effectively alleviate postharvest senescence and decay of jujube fruits by regulating the ROS accumulation and antioxidant enzymes, and prolong the storage period of postharvest. H2S treatment could significantly prolong the postharvest shelf life of jujube fruits. H2S could significantly delay the accumulation of MDA, H2O2 and O2∙− during storage of jujube fruits. H2S treatment promote CAT, SOD, APX, POD activity, and inhibit PPO activity during storage of jujube fruits. Provides a new method for storage of post-harvest jujube fruits.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a novel gasotransmitter in both mammals and plants, plays important roles in plant development and stress responses. Leaf senescence represents the final stage of leaf development. The role of H2S-producing enzyme L-cysteine desulfhydrase in regulating tomato leaf senescence is still unknown. In the present study, the effect of an L-cysteine desulfhydrase LCD1 on leaf senescence in tomato was explored by physiological analysis. LCD1 mutation caused earlier leaf senescence, whereas LCD1 overexpression significantly delayed leaf senescence compared with the wild type in 10-week tomato seedlings. Moreover, LCD1 overexpression was found to delay dark-induced senescence in detached tomato leaves, and the lcd1 mutant showed accelerated senescence. An increasing trend of H2S production was observed in leaves during storage in darkness, while LCD1 deletion reduced H2S production and LCD1 overexpression produced more H2S compared with the wild-type control. Further investigations showed that LCD1 overexpression delayed dark-triggered chlorophyll degradation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in detached tomato leaves, and the increase in the expression of chlorophyll degradation genes NYC1, PAO, PPH, SGR1, and senescence-associated genes (SAGs) during senescence was attenuated by LCD1 overexpression, whereas lcd1 mutants showed enhanced senescence-related parameters. Moreover, a correlation analysis indicated that chlorophyll content was negatively correlated with H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and also negatively correlated with the expression of chlorophyll degradation-related genes and SAGs. Therefore, these findings increase our understanding of the physiological functions of the H2S-generating enzyme LCD1 in regulating leaf senescence in tomato.

Abstract
The application of gibberellic acid (GA3 ) treatment to the postharvest quality maintenance of white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) was investigated. The optimum concentration of exogenous GA3 was 100 mg/L. At this concentration, the color change was inhibited, the firmness was maintained, and the weight loss and respiratory rates were reduced. The GA3 group had significantly lower malonaldehyde (MDA) content and membrane permeability. Reactive oxygen species accumulation was reduced due to the regulation of polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activities. Moreover, the production of endogenous gaseous signaling molecule hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) was triggered by GA3 treatment, which enhanced cystathionine γ-lyase (AbCSE) and cystathionine β-synthase (AbCBS) activities alongside the corresponding gene expressions. The preservation of button mushroom postharvest storage quality by GA3 was most likely due to the regulation of reactive oxygen species metabolism and hydrogen sulfide biosynthesis. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Mushroom is rich in nutrients and functional substances. However, due to the lack of cuticle, high respiration rate, and moisture content, mushroom's postharvest quality deteriorates rapidly. A safe and effective reagent that prevents the senescence and quality deterioration of harvested mushroom is urgently needed. The effects of plant hormone GA3 on the postharvest quality of edible fungi remain unclear. The present study provided convincing evidence that 100 mg L-1 of GA3 effectively maintained postharvest button mushroom quality by regulating reactive oxygen species metabolism and hydrogen sulfide biosynthesis.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays several physiological roles in plants. Despite the evidence, the role of H2S on cell wall disassembly and its implications on fleshy fruit firmness remains unknown. In this work, the effect of H2S treatment on the shelf-life, cell wall polymers and cell wall modifying-related gene expression of Chilean strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis) fruit was tested during postharvest storage. The treatment with H2S prolonged the shelf-life of fruit by an effect of optimal dose. Fruit treated with 0.2 mM H2S maintained significantly higher fruit firmness than non-treated fruit, reducing its decay and tripling its shelf-life. Additionally, H2S treatment delays pectin degradation throughout the storage period and significantly downregulated the expression of genes encoding for pectinases, such as polygalacturonase, pectate lyase, and expansin. This evidence suggests that H2S as a gasotransmitter prolongs the post-harvest shelf-life of the fruit and prevents its fast softening rate by a downregulation of the expression of key pectinase genes, which leads to a decreased pectin degradation.

Abstract
Despite the fact that many studies have examined the effectiveness of different gaseous postharvest treatments applied at low temperature to maintain table grape quality, the use of ethanol vapor has hardly been investigated. Thus, this work has studied the effectiveness of ethanol vapor-generating sachets in the maintenance of It 681–30 table grape quality, a new cultivar, during storage at low temperature and after the shelf-life period at 20 °C. To this end, various quality assessments have been carried out and the effect of the ethanol treatment on the expression of different genes (phenylpropanoids, transcription factors, PRs, and aquaporins) was determined. The results indicated that the application of ethanol vapor reduced the total decay incidence, weight loss, and the rachis browning index in It 681–30 grapes stored at 0 °C and after the shelf-life period at 20 °C, as compared to non-treated samples. Moreover, the modulation of STS7 and the different PR genes analyzed seems to play a part in the molecular mechanisms activated to cope with fungal attacks during the postharvest of It 681–30 grapes, and particularly during the shelf-life period at 20 °C. Furthermore, the expression of aquaporin transcripts was activated in samples showing higher weight loss. Although further work is needed to elucidate the role of ethanol in table grape quality, the results obtained in this work provide new insight into the transcriptional regulation triggered by ethanol treatment.

Abstract
This work investigates the role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the browning and regulating the antioxidant defensive system in fresh-cut Chinese water chestnuts. The samples were fumigated with 0, 10, and 15 μl L-1 of H2S and stored at 10°C for 8 days. The results indicated that the H2S treatment significantly inhibited the browning of fresh-cut Chinese water chestnuts, reduced superoxide anion ( O 2 · - ) production rate and H2O2 content accumulation, promoted the increase of total phenol content, and enhanced activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR) (P < 0.05). On the other hand, phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and peroxidase (POD) activities remained at a low level in the H2S treatment (P < 0.05). This result suggested that H2S treatment might be a promising approach to inhibit browning and prolong the shelf life by enhancing oxidation resistance and inhibiting browning enzyme activity of fresh-cut Chinese water chestnuts during storage. Among them, the 15 μl L-1 H2S treatment had the best effect on fresh-cut Chinese water chestnuts.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gasotransmitter and signaling molecule associated with seed germination, plant growth, organogenesis, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, senescence, and post-harvesting. H2S is produced in plants via both enzymatic and non-enzymatic pathways in different subcellular compartments. Exogenous application of H2S facilitates versatile metabolic processes and antioxidant machinery in plants under normal and environmental stresses. This compound interacts with phytohormones like auxins, abscisic acid, gibberellins, ethylene, jasmonic acid, and salicylic acid. Furthermore, H2S participates in signal transductions of other signaling molecules like nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, calcium, methylglyoxal, and hydrogen peroxide. It also mediates post-translational modification, which is a protective mechanism against oxidative damage of proteins. This review summarizes the roles of H2S as intriguing molecule in plants.

Abstract
Table grape is a fruit with increasing interest due to its attributes and nutritional compounds. During recent years, new cultivars such as those without seeds and with new flavors have reached countries around the world. For this reason, postharvest treatments that retain fruit quality need to be improved. However, little is known to date about the biochemical and molecular mechanisms related with observed quality improvements. This review aims to examine existing literature on the different mechanisms. Special attention will be placed on molecular mechanisms which activate and regulate the different postharvest treatments applied in order to improve table grape quality.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a signaling role in higher plants. It mediates persulfidation, a post-translational modification. It regulates physiological functions ranging from seed germination to fruit ripening. The beneficial effects of exogenous H2S are mainly caused by the stimulation of antioxidant systems.
The signaling properties of the gasotransmitter molecule hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is endogenously generated in plant cells, are mainly observed during persulfidation, a protein post-translational modification (PTM) that affects redox-sensitive cysteine residues. There is growing experimental evidence that H2S in higher plants may function as a mechanism of response to environmental stress conditions. In addition, exogenous applications of H2S to plants appear to provide additional protection against stresses, such as salinity, drought, extreme temperatures and heavy metals, mainly through the induction of antioxidant systems, in order to palliate oxidative cellular damage. H2S also appears to be involved in regulating physiological functions, such as seed germination, stomatal movement and fruit ripening, as well as molecules that maintain post-harvest quality and rhizobium–legume symbiosis. These properties of H2S open up new challenges in plant research to better understand its functions as well as new opportunities for biotechnological treatments in agriculture in a changing environment.

Abstract
Grapevines are widely planted around the world. Although grapes have high nutritional value, they are highly perishable. To explore the effect of ozone concentration on the postharvest quality of Muscat Hamburg grapes, the ethylene production rate, respiratory intensity, soluble solids, titratable acidity, firmness, threshing rate, total yeast and mold counts, and the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, polyphenol oxidase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase were determined, and the fungal metagenome on the grape surface was analyzed. Among the ozone treatment groups, 14.98 mg m-3 ozone showed a positive effect on grape preservation. After 80 days of storage, the contents of soluble solids and titratable acidity increased by 3.1% and 0.03%, respectively, compared with the control group. Over the same period, firmness increased by 4.22 N and the threshing rate decreased by 0.5%. During storage, the activity of polyphenol oxidase was inhibited and the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase were maintained, which delayed the senescence of grapes and maintained freshness. Ozone can reduce the number of fungi on the grape surface, change the colony structure, and reduce the occurrence of diseases. An ozone concentration of 14.98 mg m-3 can delay the senescence of Muscat Hamburg grapes and improve storage quality.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an endogenous gaseous signal molecule, regulates many pathologies related to aging. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) has been shown to protect against mitochondrial dysfunction and other pathological processes, including premature senescence. This study was aimed to investigate whether and how H2S attenuates senescence and apoptosis of alveolar epithelial cells via a SIRT1-dependent mechanism. Our results showed that treatment with sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), a donor of H2S, attenuated cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-induced oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence and apoptosis in A549 cells. This was associated with SIRT1 upregulation. SIRT1 activation by a pharmacological activator, SRT1720, attenuated CSE-induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in A549 cells. While SIRT1 inhibition by EX 527 or silencing by siRNA transfection significantly attenuated or abolished the ability of NaHS to reverse the CSE-induced oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and the imbalance of mitochondrial fusion and fission. Also, SIRT1 inhibition or silencing abolished the protection of NaHS against CSE-induced cellular senescence and apoptosis. In conclusion, H2S attenuates CSE-induced cellular senescence and apoptosis by improving mitochondrial function and reducing oxidative stress in alveolar epithelial cells in a SIRT1-dependent manner. These findings provide novel mechanisms underlying the protection of H2S against cigarette smoke-induced COPD.

Abstract
Similar to animal systems, plants have been suggested to possess both positive and antagonistic interactions between nitric oxide (NO) and melatonin. This review summarizes the current understanding of NO-melatonin crosstalk in plants with regard to redox homoeostasis, regulation of gene expression, and developmental changes. It also addresses the possible role of N-nitrosomelatonin (NOmela), which is likely to be associated with redox signaling and long-distance communication. Localization and quantification of NOmela are expected to add new insights into its precise role in plants. Methodological advances in imaging, isolation, and quantification of such a transient molecule require further attention. The quest for the biological role of NOmela in plants should lure physiologists to pursue investigations to obtain solid experimental evidence.

Abstract
Plant central metabolism generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are key regulators that mediate signalling pathways involved in developmental processes and plant responses to environmental fluctuations. These highly reactive metabolites can lead to cellular damage when the reduction-oxidation (redox) homeostasis becomes unbalanced. Whilst decades of research have studied redox homeostasis in leaves, fundamental knowledge in fruit biology is still fragmentary. This is even more surprising when considering the natural profusion of fruit antioxidants that can process ROS and benefit human health. In this review, we explore redox biology in fruit and provide an overview of fruit antioxidants with recent examples. We further examine the central role of the redox hub in signalling during development and stress, with particular emphasis on ascorbate, also referred to as vitamin C. Progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in the redox regulations that are linked to central metabolism and stress pathways will help to define novel strategies for optimising fruit nutritional quality, fruit production and storage.

Abstract
The fast advances of theranostic nanomedicine enable the rational design and construction of diverse functional nanoplatforms for versatile biomedical applications, among which gas-generating nanoplatforms (GGNs) have emerged very recently as unique theranostic nanoplatforms for broad gas therapies. Here, the recent developments of the rational design and chemical construction of versatile GGNs for efficient gas therapies by either exogenous physical triggers or endogenous disease-environment responsiveness are reviewed. These gases involve some therapeutic gases that can directly change disease status, such as oxygen (O2 ), nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2 ), hydrogen sulfide (H2 S) and sulfur dioxide (SO2 ), and other gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2 ), dl-menthol (DLM), and gaseous perfluorocarbon (PFC) for supplementary assistance of the theranostic process. Abundant nanocarriers have been adopted for gas delivery into lesions, including poly(d,l-lactic-co-glycolic acid), micelles, silica/mesoporous silica, organosilica, MnO2 , graphene, Bi2 Se3 , upconversion nanoparticles, CaCO3 , etc. Especially, these GGNs have been successfully developed for versatile biomedical applications, including diagnostic imaging and therapeutic use. The biosafety issue, challenges faced, and future developments on the rational construction of GGNs are also discussed for further promotion of their clinical translation to benefit patients.

Abstract
Like nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been recognized as a new gasotransmitter which plays an important role as a signaling molecule in many physiological processes in higher plants. Although fruit ripening is a complex process associated with the metabolism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitrogen oxygen species (RNS), little is known about the potential involvement of endogenous H2S. Using sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) as a model non-climacteric fruit during the green and red ripening stages, we studied endogenous H2S content and cytosolic l-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-DES) activity which increased by 14% and 28%, respectively, in red pepper fruits. NADPH is a redox compound and key cofactor required for cell growth, proliferation and detoxification. We studied the NADPH-regenerating enzyme, NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase (NADP-ICDH), whose activity decreased by 34% during ripening. To gain a better understanding of its potential regulation by H2S, we obtained a 50-75% ammonium sulfate-enriched protein fraction containing the NADP-ICDH protein; with the aid of in vitro assays in the presence of H2S, we observed that 2 and 10 mM NaHS used as H2S donors resulted in a decrease of up to 36% and 45%, respectively, in NADP-ICDH activity, which was unaffected by reduced glutathione (GSH). On the other hand, peroxynitrite (ONOO-), S-nitrosocyteine (CysNO) and DETA-NONOate, with the last two acting as NO donors, also inhibited NADP-ICDH activity. In silico analysis of the tertiary structure of sweet pepper NADP-ICDH activity (UniProtKB ID A0A2G2Y555) suggests that residues Cys133 and Tyr450 are the most likely potential targets for S-nitrosation and nitration, respectively. Taken together, the data reveal that the increase in the H2S production capacity of red fruits is due to higher L-DES activity during non-climacteric pepper fruit ripening. In vitro assays appear to show that H2S inhibits NADP-ICDH activity, thus suggesting that this enzyme may be regulated by persulfidation, as well as by S-nitrosation and nitration. NO and H2S may therefore regulate NADPH production and consequently cellular redox status during pepper fruit ripening.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an endogenous gaseous molecule, is considered as a signaling agent, in parallel with other low molecular weight reactive substances, mainly hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO), in various plant systems. New studies are now revealing that the postharvest application of H2S, through H2S donors such as sodium hydrosulfide (NaSH) or sodium sulfide (Na2S), can inhibit fruit ripening and senescence programs in numerous fruits. We discuss here current knowledge on the impact of H2S in postharvest physiology of several climacteric and non-climacteric fruits such as banana, apple, pear, kiwifruit, strawberry, mulberry fruit, and grape. Although there is still a considerable lack of studies establishing the mechanisms by which H2S signaling is linked to fruit metabolism, we highlight several candidate mechanisms, including a putative cross-talk between H2S and ethylene, reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, oxidative/nitrosative stress signaling, sulfate metabolism, and post-translational modification of protein cysteine residues (S-sulfhydration) as being functional in this H2S postharvest action. Understanding H2S metabolism and signaling during postharvest storage and the interplay with other key player molecules would therefore provide new, improved strategies for better fruit postharvest storage. To achieve this understanding, postharvest fruit physiology research will need to focus increasingly on the spatial interaction between H2S and ethylene perception as well as on the interplay between S-sulfhydration/desulfhydration and S-nitrosylation/denitrosylation under several postharvest conditions.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) at the right concentration is associated with numerous health benefits in experimental organisms, ranging from protection from ischemia/reperfusion injury to life span extension. Given the considerable translation potential, two major strategies have emerged: supplementation of exogenous H2S and modulation of endogenous H2S metabolism. Recent Advances: Recently, it was reported that hepatic H2S production capacity is increased in two of the best-characterized mammalian models of life span extension, dietary restriction, and hypopituitary dwarfism, leading to new insights into dietary and hormonal regulation of endogenous H2S production together with broader changes in sulfur amino acid (SAA) metabolism with implications for DNA methylation and redox status. CRITICAL ISSUES Here, we discuss the role of dietary SAAs and growth hormone (GH)/thyroid hormone (TH) signaling in regulation of endogenous H2S production largely via repression of H2S generating enzymes cystathionine γ-lyase (CGL) and cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) on the level of gene transcription, as well as reciprocal regulation of GH and TH signaling by H2S itself. We also discuss plasticity of CGL and CBS gene expression in response to environmental stimuli and the potential of the microbiome to impact overall H2S levels. FUTURE DIRECTIONS The relative contribution of increased H2S to health span or lifespan benefits in models of extended longevity remains to be determined, as does the mechanism by which such benefits occur. Nonetheless, our ability to control H2S levels using exogenous H2S donors or by modifying the endogenous H2S production/consumption equilibrium has the potential to improve health and increase "shelf-life" across evolutionary boundaries, including our own. Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), as a signaling molecule, is involved in the regulation of growth and development in plants. Recent studies have indicated that H2S also plays important roles in regulating postharvest senescence of horticultural products. The focus of this review is to summarize the synthesis of H2S in plants and its potential roles in alleviating the senescence of cut flowers, fruits, and vegetables during postharvest storage. During postharvest of horticultural products, H2S could scavenge reactive oxygen species via promoting the activity of antioxidant enzymes, thereby, sustaining the integrity of the membrane. In fruits, H2S effectively enhanced the tolerance of chilling by increasing the content of proline and polyphenol compounds. During postharvest storage of perishable fruits and vegetables, H2S significantly alleviated decay, which was caused by fungi by inhibiting the growth of fungi spores. Moreover, H2S interacted with other molecules synergistically (NO) or antagonistically (ethylene) to alleviate senescence of horticultural products. At the transcriptional level, H2S regulated the expression of senescence-related genes, which were related to degradation of proteins and chlorophyll, to delay the senescence of horticultural products. Thus, H2S does not only possess positive antioxidant and antifungal properties, but also significantly regulates the senescence-related gene during postharvest of horticultural products. Future studies of H2S in postharvest storage should focus on its molecular mechanism in the posttranslational modifications of proteins as well as its safety attributes in treated fruits and vegetables.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been postulated to be the third gasotransmitter in both animals and plants after nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). In this review, the physiological roles of H2S in plant growth, development and responses to biotic, and abiotic stresses are summarized. The enzymes which generate H2S are subjected to tight regulation to produce H2S when needed, contributing to delicate responses of H2S to environmental stimuli. H2S occupies a central position in plant sulfur metabolism as it is the link of inorganic sulfur to the first organic sulfur-containing compound cysteine which is the starting point for the synthesis of methionine, coenzyme A, vitamins, etc. In sulfur assimilation, adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate reductase (APR) is the rate-limiting enzyme with the greatest control over the pathway and probably the generation of H2S which is an essential component in this process. APR is an evolutionarily conserved protein among plants, and two conserved domains PAPS_reductase and Thioredoxin are found in APR. Sulfate reduction including the APR-catalyzing step is carried out in chloroplasts. APR, the key enzyme in sulfur assimilation, is mainly regulated at transcription level by transcription factors in response to sulfur availability and environmental stimuli. The cis-acting elements in the promoter region of all the three APR genes in Solanum lycopersicum suggest that multiple factors such as sulfur starvation, cytokinins, CO2, and pathogens may regulate the expression of SlAPRs. In conclusion, as a critical enzyme in regulating sulfur assimilation, APR is probably critical for H2S generation during plants' response to diverse environmental factors.

Using a fluorescence microscope with a specific probe, we discovered that, during the senescence of postharvest daylily flower, endogenous H2S homeostasis was impaired. The activities of two important synthetic enzymes of H2S, l- and d-cysteine desulfhydrase, exhibited decreasing tendencies. However, NaHS (a H2S donor) not only blocked the decreased H2S production but also extended the postharvest life of daylilies. These beneficial roles were verified by the alleviation of lipid peroxidation and the increased activities of antioxidant enzymes. Meanwhile, the energy status was sustained, and the respiration rate was decreased. In contrast to NaHS, the addition of an inhibitor of H2S synthesis alone aggravated lipid peroxidation and lowered energy charge. Together, the present study implies that endogenous H2S alleviates senescence of postharvest daylilies via increasing antioxidant capacity and maintained energy status.
