Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc). Environmental and lifestyle factors, such as smoking and coffee drinking, have been associated with a decreased risk for PD. However, the biological mechanisms underlying protective effects on PD are still not fully understood. It has been suggested that non-nicotine components in cigarette smoke and non-caffeine components in coffee may contribute to this protective effect. The aim of this review was to explore candidate molecules and mechanisms behind the effects of smoking and coffee drinking on PD by integrating findings from previous studies. By cross-referencing an index of tobacco constituents and a list of coffee constituents with existing literature on natural compounds and their structural analogs that show inhibitory activities against monoamine oxidase B, catechol O-methyltransferase, and α-synuclein fibrillation, we have identified tobacco and coffee components that inhibit these targets. Furthermore, tobacco and coffee components potentially play roles in suppressing neuroinflammation, activating the Nrf2 pathway as natural activators, and altering the gut microbiome. This review suggests that the phenolic compounds from tobacco and coffee investigated may contribute to the low incidence of PD in smokers and coffee drinkers, showing moderate to strong potential as therapeutic interventions. The current review suggests that multifunctional molecules found in coffee and cigarette smoke may have potential neuroprotective effects, but none of the data indicates that multifunctionality is required for these effects. This review will deepen our understanding of how smoking and coffee drinking are linked to a reduced risk of PD and will also be important in elucidating the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of smoking and coffee drinking on PD.

Abstract
Probiotics regulate intestinal flora balance and enhance the intestinal barrier, which is useful in preventing and treating colitis. However, they have strict storage requirements. In addition, they degrade in a strongly acidic environment, resulting in a significant decrease in their activity when used as microbial agents. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) was loaded into acid-resistant and colon-targeting double-layer microgels. The inner layer consists of guar gum (GG) and low methoxyl pectin (LMP), which can achieve retention and degradation in the colon. To achieve colon localization, the outer layer was composed of chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (SA). The formulation demonstrated favorable bio-responses across various pH conditions in vitro and sustained release of LGG in the colon lesions. Bare LGG survival decreased by 52.2 % in simulated gastric juice (pH 1.2) for 2 h, whereas that of encapsulated LGG decreased by 18.5 %. In the DSS-induced inflammatory model, LGG-loaded microgel significantly alleviated UC symptoms in mice and reduced inflammatory factor levels in the colon. Encapsulation of LGG improved its stability in acidic conditions, thus increasing its content at the colon lesions and reducing pathogenic bacteria. These findings provide an experimental basis and a technical reference for developing and applying probiotic microgel preparations.

Abstract
The increasing scientific interest in antioxidants and naturally derived compounds as potential remedies for obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has led to extensive research. The objective of this bibliometric analysis is to present an updated perspective on the topic of antioxidants, herbs, phytochemicals, and natural compounds, in the control of obesity and NAFLD, to identify new areas for future research. Publications from the years 2012-2022 were retrieved using the Scopus database. The research trends were analyzed using the Biblioshiny and VOSviewer tools. The field has seen a significant increase in research activity, as indicated by an annual growth rate of 10 % in the number of published manuscripts. China, Korea, and the USA emerged as the most prominent contributors in this specific field, supported by their notable volumes of publications and citations. The density analysis revealed that the most frequently occurring authors' keywords related to herbal species are, in rank order, Camelia sinensis, Momordica charantia, Curcuma longa, Ilex paraguariensis, Panax ginseng, Moringa oleifera, Garcinia cambogia, Garcinia mangostana, Zingiber officinale, and Cinnamomum verum. In the group of antioxidants, phytochemicals, and natural compounds, the top 10 were resveratrol, curcumin, quercetin, vitamin E, alpha-lipoic acid, vitamin C, chlorogenic acid, lycopene, fucoxanthin, and berberine. The co-occurrence analysis unveiled significant themes and potential trends, including a notable interest in the impact of herbal species, antioxidants, phytochemicals, and natural compounds on obesity and NAFLD through the modulation of the gut microbiome. Another recurring theme that arises, is the ongoing investigation of molecular targets that demonstrate anti-adipogenesis properties. The analysis presented in this study provides valuable insights for researchers investigating the efficacy of antioxidants, herbs, phytochemicals, and natural compounds in addressing obesity and NAFLD. Through the use of bibliometric methods, the study offers a comprehensive overview. Furthermore, the findings of this analysis can serve as a foundation for future research in this specific domain.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to long-term medical conditions that involve inflammation of the digestive tract, and the global incidence and prevalence of IBD are on the rise. Gut microbes play an important role in maintaining the intestinal health of the host, and the occurrence, development, and therapeutic effects of IBD are closely related to the structural and functional changes of gut microbes. Published studies have shown that the natural products from traditional Chinese medicine have direct or indirect regulatory impacts on the composition and metabolism of the gut microbes. In this review, we summarize the research progress of several groups of natural products, i.e., flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, polysaccharides, polyphenols, and terpenoids, for the therapeutic activities in relieving IBD symptoms. The role of gut microbes and their intestinal metabolites in managing the IBD is presented, with focusing on the mechanism of action of those natural products. Traditional Chinese medicine alleviated IBD symptoms by regulating gut microbes, providing important theoretical and practical basis for the treatment of variable inflammatory intestinal diseases.

Abstract
Inflammation has been shown to trigger a wide range of chronic diseases, particularly inflammatory diseases. As a result, the focus of research has been on anti-inflammatory drugs and foods. In recent years, the field of medicinal and edible homology (MEH) has developed rapidly in both medical and food sciences, with 95% of MEH being associated with plants. Phenolic acids are a crucial group of natural bioactive substances found in medicinal and edible homologous plants (MEHPs). Their anti-inflammatory activity is significant as they play a vital role in treating several inflammatory diseases. These compounds possess enormous potential for developing anti-inflammatory drugs and functional foods. However, their development is far from satisfactory due to their diverse structure and intricate anti-inflammatory mechanisms. In this review, we summarize the various types, structures, and distribution of MEHP phenolic acids that have been identified as of 2023. We also analyze their anti-inflammatory activity and molecular mechanisms in inflammatory diseases through NF-κB, MAPK, NLRP3, Nrf2, TLRs, and IL-17 pathways. Additionally, we investigate their impact on regulating the composition of the gut microbiota and immune responses. This analysis lays the groundwork for further exploration of the anti-inflammatory structure-activity relationship of MEHP phenolic acids, aiming to inspire structural optimization and deepen our understanding of their mechanism, and provides valuable insights for future research and development in this field.

Abstract
The high-fat diet would lead to excessive fat storage in the liver to form metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and the trend is burgeoning. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) on metabolites and gut microorganisms in MASLD mice induced by a high-fat diet. In comparison to the HF group, the TC (total cholesterol), TG (total triglycerides), LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), AST (aspartate aminotransferase) and ALT (alanine transaminase) levels were reduced after CGA supplement. CGA led to an increase in l-phenylalanine, l-tryptophan levels, and promoted fatty acid degradation. CGA increased the abundance of the Muribaculaceae, Bacteroides and Parabacteroides. Changes in these microbes were significantly associated with the liver metabolites level and lipid profile level. These data suggest important roles for CGA regulating the gut microbiota, liver and caecum content metabolites, and TG-, TC- and LDL-C lowering function.

Abstract
In the middle of an ever-changing landscape of diabetes care, precision medicine, and lifestyle therapies are becoming increasingly important. Dietary polyphenols are like hidden allies found in our everyday meals. These biomolecules, found commonly in fruits, vegetables, and various plant-based sources, hold revolutionary potential within their molecular structure in the way we approach diabetes and its intimidating consequences. There are currently numerous types of diabetes medications, but they are not appropriate for all patients due to limitations in dosages, side effects, drug resistance, a lack of efficacy, and ethnicity. Currently, there has been increased interest in practicing herbal remedies to manage diabetes and its related complications. This article aims to summarize the potential of dietary polyphenols as a foundation in the treatment of diabetes and its associated consequences. We found that most polyphenols inhibit enzymes linked to diabetes. This review outlines the potential benefits of selected molecules, including kaempferol, catechins, rosmarinic acid, apigenin, chlorogenic acid, and caffeic acid, in managing diabetes mellitus as these compounds have exhibited promising results in in vitro, in vivo, in silico, and some preclinical trials study. This encompassing exploration reveals the multifaceted impact of polyphenols not only in mitigating diabetes but also in addressing associated conditions like inflammation, obesity, and even cancer. Their mechanisms involve antioxidant functions, immune modulation, and proinflammatory enzyme regulation. Furthermore, these molecules exhibit anti-tumor activities, influence cellular pathways, and activate AMPK pathways, offering a less toxic, cost-effective, and sustainable approach to addressing diabetes and its complications.

Abstract
Aims The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) on the intestinal microorganisms and metabolites in broilers during lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced immune stress. Methods A total of 312 one-day-old Arbor Acres (AA) broilers were randomly allocated to four groups with six replicates per group and 13 broilers per replicate: (1) MS group (injected with saline and fed the basal diet); (2) ML group (injected with 0.5 mg LPS/kg and fed the basal diet); (3) MA group (injected with 0.5 mg LPS/kg and fed the basal diet supplemented with 1,000 mg/kg CGA); and (4) MB group (injected with saline and fed the basal diet supplemented with 1,000 mg/kg CGA). Results The results showed that the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Bacteroidetes in the MB group was significantly higher than that in MS group, while the abundance of pathogenic bacteria such as Streptococcaceae was significantly decreased in the MB group. The addition of CGA significantly inhibited the increase of the abundance of harmful bacteria such as Streptococcaceae, Proteobacteria and Pseudomonas caused by LPS stress. The population of butyric acid-producing bacteria such as Lachnospiraceae and Coprococcus and beneficial bacteria such as Coriobacteriaceae in the MA group increased significantly. Non-targeted metabonomic analysis showed that LPS stress significantly upregulated the 12-keto-tetrahydroleukotriene B4, riboflavin and mannitol. Indole-3-acetate, xanthurenic acid, L-formylkynurenine, pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid and L-glutamic acid were significantly down-regulated, indicating that LPS activated inflammation and oxidation in broilers, resulting in intestinal barrier damage. The addition of CGA to the diet of LPS-stimulated broilers significantly decreased 12-keto-tetrahydro-leukotriene B4 and leukotriene F4 in arachidonic acid metabolism and riboflavin and mannitol in ABC transporters, and significantly increased N-acetyl-L-glutamate 5-semialdehyde in the biosynthesis of amino acids and arginine, The presence of pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid in D-amino acid metabolism and the cecal metabolites, indolelactic acid, xanthurenic acid and L-kynurenine, indicated that CGA could reduce the inflammatory response induced by immune stress, enhance intestinal barrier function, and boost antioxidant capacity. Conclusion We conclude that CGA can have a beneficial effect on broilers by positively altering the balance of intestinal microorganisms and their metabolites to inhibit intestinal inflammation and barrier damage caused by immune stress.

Abstract
Fu tea is receiving increasing attention for its specific aroma, flavor, and dramatic functional benefits. Herein, we explored the effects and underlying mechanisms of Fu loose tea (FLT), Fu brick tea (FBT), and diet pills (orlistat) on a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. The results indicated that FLT and FBT administration effectively inhibited weight gain, glucose metabolic dysregulation, fat accumulation in organs, hepatic and kidney injury, and oxidative stress induced by HFD. Additionally, FLT and FBT treatments improved the lipid profiles and reduced the production of proinflammatory cytokines by regulating the expression levels of lipid metabolism- and inflammation-related genes. Furthermore, FLT and FBT ameliorated the gut microbiota dysbiosis in HFD-mice in a dose-dependent relationship by increasing the abundance of family Verrucomicrobiaceae and genus Akkermansia and Turicibacter and simultaneously reducing the abundance of family Erysipelotrichaceae and genus Bifidobacterium; in contrast, orlistat did not exert a regulatory effect on gut microbiota similar to FLT and FBT to improve HFD-induced obesity. KEGG analysis of gut microbiota annotation revealed that "metabolism" was the most enriched category. This study further provides a theoretical basis for FLT and FBT to be potential supplements to alleviate diet-induced obesity.

Abstract
In the present study, we aimed to elucidate the effects of stevia extract on production performance, serum immune indexes, intestinal structure, and cecum microbial structure. We randomly divided eight hundred 46-wk-old Roman hens into 5 groups, with 8 replicates in each group and 20 chickens in each replicate. The control group was fed a basal diet, whereas the 4 experimental groups were fed 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg stevia extracts. The study period was 24 wk. The addition of different concentrations of the stevia extract to the diet resulted in significant secondary changes in the egg production rate at 1 to 12 wk (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the addition of 50 and 100 mg/kg stevia extract to the diet significantly increased serum IgM and IgG levels in laying hens (P < 0.05) but linearly decreased serum IL-1β levels (P < 0.05). Serum T-SOD activity linearly increased (P = 0.057); however, serum biochemical indexes showed no significant differences. Stevia extract tended to increase the ratio of the duodenal villi height to the depth of the crypt (P = 0.067), with no obvious lesions in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. In addition, stevia extract increased the relative abundance of species at the phylum level, with the abundance of Bacteroides and Firmicutes exhibiting significant secondary changes (P < 0.05). The ACE and Chao1 indexes suggested that stevia extract addition significantly increased the alpha diversity of cecum microorganisms in laying hens. Furthermore, NMDS analysis based on operational taxonomic units revealed that stevia extract addition increased the beta diversity of cecum microorganisms in laying hens. Adding a certain amount of stevia extract to feed can improve the production performance, immune ability, and intestinal health of laying hens to some extent, and we recommend an effective level of 200mg/kg of stevia extract for laying hen diets.

Abstract
The relationship between gut microbiota and doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC) is becoming increasingly clear. Emodin (EMO), a naturally occurring anthraquinone, exerts cardioprotective effects and plays a protective role by regulating gut microbiota composition. Therefore, the protective effect of EMO against DIC injury and its underlying mechanisms are worth investigating. In this study, we analyzed the differences in the gut microbiota in recipient mice transplanted with different flora using 16S-rDNA sequencing, analyzed the differences in serum metabolites among groups of mice using a nontargeted gas chromatography-mass spectrometry coupling system, and assessed cardiac function based on cardiac morphological staining, cardiac injury markers, and ferroptosis indicator assays. We found EMO ameliorated DIC and ferroptosis, as evidenced by decreased myocardial fibrosis, cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, and myocardial disorganization; improved ferroptosis indicators; and the maintenance of normal mitochondrial morphology. The protective effect of EMO was eliminated by the scavenging effect of antibiotics on the gut microbiota. Through fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), we found that EMO restored the gut microbiota disrupted by doxorubicin (DOX) to near-normal levels. This was evidenced by an increased proportion of Bacteroidota and a decreased proportion of Verrucomicrobiota. FMT resulted in changes in the composition of serum metabolites. Mice transplanted with EMO-improved gut microbiota showed better cardiac function and ferroptosis indices; however, these beneficial effects were not observed in Nrf2 (Nfe2l2)-/- mice. Overall, EMO exerted a protective effect against DIC by attenuating ferroptosis, and the above effects occurred by remodeling the composition of gut microbiota perturbed by DOX and required Nrf2 mediation.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study demonstrated for the first time the protective effect of emodin against DIC and verified by FMT that its cardioprotective effect was achieved by remodeling gut microbiota composition, resulting in attenuation of ferroptosis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that these effects were mediated by the redox-related gene Nrf2.

Abstract
Prebiotics are known to modulate the gut microbiota, but there is host variability, mainly due to differences in carbohydrate-utilisation by gut microbiota. Bifidobacterium and Bacteroides are powerful carbohydrate-utilising bacteria, and the ratio of both is closely related to the utilisation of prebiotics. However, the differential impact of prebiotics on the composition and function of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in participants with different Bacteroides/Bifidobacterium (Ba/Bi) ratios have not been studied. Here, we conducted a 4-week randomised double-blind, parallel four-arm trial using two prebiotics (oligofructose and inulin) in two populations with high Ba/Bi (H) and low Ba/Bi (L). The response to prebiotics in both populations was influenced by the baseline microbiota background specificity. Notably, at an overall level, FOS was slightly better than inulin in modulating the gut microbiota. Difference in gut microbiota regulation by FOS across microbiota contexts were significant between the two groups. Butyric acid-producing bacteria were significantly more abundant in H and further elevated butyric acid and related metabolite levels, with H more likely to benefit from the FOS intervention. The two groups showed only metabolic differences in their response to inulin, with L showing a significant increase in propionic acid and being enriched in glycolysis functions, whereas H was enriched in amino acids and aminoglycolysis functions. Overall, these results provide a basis for selecting appropriate prebiotics for participants with different gut backgrounds.

Abstract
Long-term inflammation will develop into chronic inflammation and become inflammatory diseases. Antibiotics are commonly used in clinical practice to treat inflammatory diseases. But patients are prone to drug resistance. So we need to find new treatment. Chlorogenic acid is an organic compound extracted from honeysuckle and other plants. Its anti-inflammatory activity is strong, and it has a significant anti-inflammatory effect on inflammatory diseases in various systems. It has been shown that chlorogenic acid can regulate inflammation-related signaling pathways, such as nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) canonical signaling pathway, NF-κB atypical signaling pathway, nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) canonical signaling pathway, and Nrf2 atypical signaling pathway, etc. It can up-regulate the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, IL-13 and down-regulate the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine such as IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8. Although chlorogenic acid has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, but clinical trials and application still face many difficulties. In the future, the anti-inflammatory molecular mechanism of chlorogenic acid should be further studied to explore its clinical application value and improve new ideas for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
The study investigated the impact of chlorogenic acid (CGA) supplementation in a high-fat diet (HFD) on growth, lipid metabolism, intestinal and hepatic histology, as well as gut microbiota in spotted sea bass. A total of 540 fish were fed six experimental diets, including a normal fat diet (NFD), a high-fat diet (HFD), and HFD supplemented with 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg/kg CGA (named HFD1, HFD2, HFD3, and HFD4, respectively) for 7 weeks. The results showed that HFD feeding increased growth and hepatic lipid deposition compared to that in the NFD group. Inclusion of 300 mg/kg CGA in HFD decreased the HFD-induced hyperlipemia (p < 0.05). Additionally, compared to the HFD group, the HFD4 group showed significant reductions in serum aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) levels as well as hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) content, while also improving liver total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) (p < 0.05). In the CGA-containing groups, hepatocytes were arranged more neatly than those in the HFD group, and there was a reduction in lipid deposition and hemolysis in the liver. Supplementation of CGA had effects on intestinal structure including an increase in mucosal thickness, as well as villus number and width. The diversity of intestinal flora in the CGA-containing groups was higher than those in the HFD group, and supplementation of 200 mg/kg CGA significantly increased the abundance of intestinal bacteria (p < 0.05). HFD4 feeding increased the intestinal Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes ratio and decreased the abundance of Vibrio. The highest value abundance of Actinobacteriota was found in the HFD2 group. Overall, HFD caused negative effects, and supplementation of 200-400 mg/kg CGA to HFD improved fat deposition, lipid metabolic disorders and liver and gut histology, and increased gut bacterial diversity in spotted sea bass.

Abstract
It is well established that p-Hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs), including ferulic, caffeic, sinapic, and p-coumaric acids, possess a characteristic phenylpropanoid C6-C3 backbone and account for about one-third of the phenolic compounds in our diet. HCAs are typically associated with various plant cell wall components, including mono-, di-, and polysaccharides, sterols, polyamines, glycoproteins, and lignins. Interestingly, enzymes produced by intestinal microbes liberate HCAs from these associations. HCAs are completely absorbed in their free form upon ingestion and undergo specific reactions upon absorption in the small intestine or liver. The gut epithelium, composed of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), acts as a physical barrier against harmful bacteria and a site for regulated interactions between bacteria and the gut lumen. Thus, maintaining the integrity of the epithelial barrier is essential for establishing a physiochemical environment conducive to homeostasis. This review summarizes the protective effects of HCAs on the intestinal barrier, achieved through four mechanisms: preserving tight junction proteins (TJPs), modulating pro-inflammatory cytokines, exerting antioxidant activity, and regulating the intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
This study aimed to test the preventive anti-inflammatory properties of Chinese yam polysaccharides (CYP) and sulfated Chinese yam polysaccharides (SCYP) on LPS-induced systemic acute inflammation in mice and investigate their mechanisms of action. The results showed that SCYP can efficiently reduce plasma TNF-α and IL-6 levels, exhibiting an obvious anti-inflammation ability. Moreover, SCYP reduced hepatic TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β secretion more effectively than CYP, and significantly altered intestinal oxidative stress levels. In addition, a 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis showed that CYP regulated the gut microbiota by decreasing Desulfovibrio and Sutterella and increasing Prevotella. SCYP changed the gut microbiota by decreasing Desulfovibrio and increasing Coprococcus, which reversed the microbiota dysbiosis caused by LPS. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) revealed that treatment with CYP and SCYP can produce more biomarkers of the gut microbiome that can promote the proliferation of polysaccharide-degrading bacteria and facilitate the intestinal de-utilization of polysaccharides. These results suggest that SCYP can differentially regulate intestinal flora, and that they exhibit anti-inflammatory effects, thus providing a new reference to rationalize the exploitation of sulfated yam polysaccharides.

Abstract
Phenolic acids (PAs), a class of small bioactive molecules widely distributed in food and mainly found as secondary plant metabolites, present significant advantages such as antioxidant activity and other health benefits. The global epidemic of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming a serious public health problem. Existing studies showed that gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis is highly associated with the occurrence and development of NAFLD. In recent years, progress has been made in the study of the relationship among PA compounds, GM, and NAFLD. PAs can regulate the composition and functions of the GM to promote human health, while GM can increase the dietary sources of PAs and improve its bioavailability. This paper discussed PAs, GM, and their interrelationship while introducing several representative dietary PA sources and examining the absorption and metabolism of PAs mediated by GM. It also summarizes the effect and mechanisms of PAs in improving and regulating NAFLD via GM and their metabolites. This helps to better evaluate the potential preventive effect of PAs on NAFLD via the regulation of GM and expands the utilization of PAs and PA-rich food resources.

Abstract
Intact cells, as the smallest unit of whole foods, were isolated from three legume crops and fermented with human faecal inoculum to elucidate the effect of food macro-nutrients compositional difference (starch, proteins and lipids) on in vitro colonic fermentation profiles. After 48 h of fermentation, the highest production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were observed for the pea cells, abundance in starch (64.9 %, db). In contrast, branch chain fatty acids (BCFAs) were the major metabolites for protein-enriched soybean cells (protein content 56.9 %, db). The peanut cells rich in lipids (49.2 %, db) has the lowest fermentation rate among the three varieties. Correspondingly, pea cells favoured the growth of Bifidobacterium, whereas soybean and peanut cells promoted an abundance of Bacteroides and Shigella, respectively. Furthermore, except the intact pea cells promoting the abundance of butyrate producer Roseburia, a similar fermentation pattern was found between intact and broken cells suggesting that macro-nutrient types, rather than structure, dominate the production of metabolites in colonic fermentation. The findings elucidate how the food compositional difference can modulate the gut microbiome and thus provide the knowledge to design whole food legumes-based functional foods.

Abstract
Background and Aims Several components of Cayratia japonica (CJ) such as rutin and quercetin have shown anti-inflammatory effect, yet its function in ulcerative colitis (UC) remains to be clarified. This study focuses on the modulatory effect of CJ on UC as well as molecular mechanism by which CJ regulates macrophage polarization in UC. Methods The targets related to CJ components and UC were, respectively, obtained through in silico analysis, and their intersection targets were selected for pathway enrichment analysis. RAW264.7 cells were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce M1 macrophages. Expression of the macrophage polarization M1 marker CD11b and M2 marker CD206 was measured to determine the phenotype of macrophages. The mouse model was treated with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) to induce UC to observe the effects of CJ on UC in vivo. Results The in silico analysis suggested the crucial significance of TLR4 and its downstream MAPK/NF-κB pathways in the modulatory effect of CJ on UC. Furthermore, experimental data revealed that CJ could promote M2 macrophage polarization but alleviate immune inflammation and reduce colon damage in DSS-evoked UC model. Additionally, CJ can inhibit the expression of TLR4/MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway to enhance the M2-like polarization. Conclusion Hence, CJ may exert anti-inflammatory effects and an inhibitory role in UC by inhibiting the TLR4/MAPK/NF-κB pathway and subsequent M1-like macrophage polarization.

Abstract
Ampelopsis grossedentata is a traditional medicinal and edible plant rich in bioactive compounds. This paper focus on the white powder on the surface of A. grossedentata, and the effects of processing technology and storage time on the composition of bioactive compounds in Ampelopsis grossedentata extracts (AMP). 33 compounds in AMP were identified and 30 compounds were reported for the first time compared with standards by UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS. Organic acid, phenol, and flavonoids were detected in powder samples. Through comparing the mass spectrum data of three processing samples (traditional method, fermentation and drying-only), five compounds in fermentation samples were higher than other groups, and the content of most compounds of the traditional process was decreased compared with drying-only process. For the storage time research, the powder on the surface was found to be more unstable than leaf parts after 24 h, suggesting that sealing preservation is crucial in the process after powder precipitation.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the protective effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) on broilers subjected to dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced intestinal damage. One hundred and forty-four 1-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chicks were allocated into one of 3 groups with 6 replicates of eight birds each for a 21-d trial. The treatments included: 1) Control group: normal birds fed a basal diet; 2) DSS group: DSS-treated birds fed a basal diet; and 3) CGA group: DSS-treated birds fed a CGA-supplemented control diet. An oral DSS administration via drinking water was performed from 15 to 21 d of age. Compared with the control group, DSS administration reduced 21-d body weight and weight gain from 15 to 21 d, but increased absolute weight of jejunum and absolute and relative weight of ileum (P < 0.05). DSS administration elevated circulating D-lactate concentration and diamine oxidase activity (P < 0.05), which were partially reversed when supplementing CGA (P < 0.05). The oral administration with DSS decreased villus height and villus height/crypt depth ratio, but increased crypt depth in jejunum and ileum (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, DSS administration increased serum glutathione level and jejunal catalase activity and malonaldehyde accumulation, but decreased jejunal glutathione level (P < 0.05). In contrast, feeding a CGA-supplemented diet normalized serum glutathione and jejunal malonaldehyde levels, and increased jejunal glutathione concentration in DSS-administrated birds (P < 0.05). Additionally, CGA supplementation reduced ileal malonaldehyde accumulation in DSS-treated birds (P < 0.05). DSS challenge increased levels of serum interferon-γ and interleukin-6, jejunal interleukin-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-6, and ileal interleukin-1β and interleukin-6 when compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The elevated serum interferon-γ and ileal interleukin-6 levels were normalized to control values when supplementing CGA (P < 0.05). The results suggested that CGA administration could partially prevent DSS-induced increased intestinal permeability, oxidative damage, and inflammation in broilers, although it did not improve their growth performance and intestinal morphology.

Abstract
Background Dietary polyphenols, polypeptides, and oligosaccharides modulate inflammation and immunity by altering the composition of gut microbiota. The polyphenols and polypeptides in Chinese rice wine have protective effects against cardiovascular disease. In this study, we hypothesized that the polyphenols, polypeptides, and oligosaccharides in Chinese rice wine can ameliorate diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) by altering gut microbiota and metabolites. Methods Mice with DCM and high glucose cells were treated with rice wine polyphenols (RWPH), rice wine polypeptides (RWPE), and rice wine oligosaccharides. Cardiac function was evaluated by echocardiography and detection of myocardial injury markers. We observed the pathological structures using hematoxylin and eosin staining, Masson's trichrome staining, and transmission electron microscopy. The expression levels of autophagy-related proteins and stubRFP-sensGFP-LC3 fluorescence were measured to evaluate autophagy. We performed TUNEL staining and measured the levels of Bax, Bcl-2, and p53 to assess apoptosis. To analyze the effects of the rice wine functional components on the gut microbiota and metabolites of DCM mice, we performed fecal 16S-rDNA gene sequencing and serum untargeted metabolomics. Results Our results showed an increase in cardiac and mitochondrial function, promotion of autophagy, and inhibition of cardiomyocyte apoptosis, which indicates that RWPH and RWPE can ameliorate DCM. The abundance of Akkermansia and Desulfovibrio were reduced by the presence of RWPH and RWPE. The growth of the Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group and Clostridiales-unclassified were promoted by the presence of RWPH. Tryptophan metabolism-associated metabolites were increased and phenylalanine levels were reduced by the presence of RWPH and RWPE. The biosynthesis of primary bile acids was enhanced by the presence of RWPH. Conclusion Both RWPH and RWPE provided a protective effect against DCM by promoting autophagy, inhibiting apoptosis, and reversing both gut microbiota dysbiosis and metabolic dysregulation.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a rare, recurrent, and intractable inflammation obstruction of the stomach tract, usually accompanied by inflammation of cell proliferation and inflammation of the colon and carries a particular cause of inflammation. The clinical use of drugs in western countries affects IBD treatment, but various adverse effects and high prices limit their application. For these reasons, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is more advantageous in treating IBD. This paper reviews the mechanism and research status of TCM and natural products in IBD treatment by analyzing the relevant literature to provide a scientific and theoretical basis for IBD treatment.

Abstract
Gut microbiota, a group of microorganisms that live in the gastrointestinal tract, plays important roles in health and disease. One mechanism that gut microbiota in modulation of the functions of hosts is achieved through synthesizing and releasing a series of metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids. In recent years, increasing evidence has indicated that dietary compounds can interact with gut microbiota. On one hand, dietary compounds can modulate the composition and function of gut microbiota; on the other hand, gut microbiota can metabolize the dietary compounds. Although there are several reviews on gut microbiota and diets, there is no focused review on the effects of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived metabolites. In this review, we first briefly discussed the types of gut microbiota metabolites, their origins, and the reasons that dietary compounds can interact with gut microbiota. Then, focusing on gut microbiota-derived compounds, we discussed the effects of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived compounds and the following effects on health. Furthermore, we give our perspectives on the research direction of the related research fields. Understanding the roles of dietary compounds on gut microbiota-derived metabolites will expand our knowledge of how diets affect the host health and disease, thus eventually enable the personalized diets and nutrients.

Abstract
Liver fibrosis is a chronic and progressive disease with complex pathogenesis related to bile acids (BAs) and gut microbiota. Forsythiaside A (FTA), isolated from the traditional Chinese medicine Forsythiae Fructus (Lian Qiao), is a natural hepatoprotective agent. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of FTA on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis in mice. Liver fibrosis was induced in mice by intraperitoneal injection of 2 mL/kg CCl4 three times a week for 4 weeks. FTA attenuated CCl4-induced liver fibrosis in mice, which was proved by the results of Masson and Sirius red staining, liver hydroxyproline, hyaluronic acid, laminin, type III procollagen, and type IV collagen assays. FTA inhibited hepatic stellate cell activation, and reduced hepatic inflammation and oxidative stress in mice treated with CCl4. What's more, FTA ameliorated CCl4-induced gut dysbiosis, maintained intestinal barrier function, increased the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and improved endotoxemia, as manifested by decreased serum lipopolysaccharide levels and increased expression of ileal tight junction proteins. Besides, FTA can modulate the genes related to bile acid metabolism to alter the distribution of fecal BAs in fibrotic mice. In a word, FTA can improve liver fibrosis by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress, regulating gut microbiota and BA metabolism, and increasing the content of SCFAs. The results of this study provided an important reference for the study on the mechanisms by which natural products prevent liver fibrosis.

Abstract
Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a phenolic compound that is widely distributed in honeysuckle, Eucommia, fruits and vegetables. It has various biological functions, including cardiovascular, nerve, kidney, and liver protection, and it exerts a protective effect on human health, according to clinical research and basic research. The intestine and brain are two important organs that are closely related in the human body. The intestine is even called the "second brain" in humans. However, among the many reports in the literature, an article systematically reporting the regulatory effects and specific mechanisms of CGA on the intestines and brain has not been published. In this context, this review uses the regulatory role and mechanism of CGA in the intestine and brain as the starting point and comprehensively reviews CGA metabolism in the body and the regulatory role and mechanism of CGA in the intestine and brain described in recent years. Additionally, the review speculates on the potential biological actions of CGA in the gut-brain axis. This study provides a scientific theory for CGA research in the brain and intestines and promotes the transformation of basic research and the application of CGA in food nutrition and health care.

Abstract
Chronic stress causes duodenal damage, in which iron death is likely to play an important role. Chlorogenic acid (CGA), one of the most widely consumed dietary polyphenols, has been shown to protect the intestine. However, it is unclear whether CGA exerts a duodenoprotective effect in chronic stress by inhibiting ferroptosis. In this work, rats were daily exposed to restraint stress for 6 h over 21 consecutive days, with/without CGA (100 mg/kg, gavage). CGA reduced blood hepcidin, iron, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and ferroportin 1 (FPN1) levels and upregulated the levels of ferroptosis-related biomarkers (GPX4, GSH, NADPH, etc.). These results confirmed that CGA inhibited ferroptosis in the duodenum. Furthermore, the use of S3I-201 (STAT3 inhibitor) helped to further clarify the mechanism of action of CGA. Overall, CGA could reduce hepcidin production by inhibiting the IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 pathway in the liver to increase the expression of FPN1 in the duodenum, which restored iron homeostasis and inhibited ferroptosis, alleviating chronic stress-induced duodenal injury.

Abstract
Background: Liver cirrhosis is the common end-stage of liver disease which lacks effective treatment, thus studies to determine prevention targets are an urgent need. The intestinal microbiota (IM) play important roles in modulating liver diseases which are mediated by microbial metabolites. Despite decades of growing microbial studies, whether IM contribute to the development of cirrhosis and the intimate metabolic link remain obscure. Here, we aimed to reveal the dynamic alterations of microbial composition and metabolic signatures in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver cirrhosis mice. Methods: CCl4-treated mice or normal control (NC) were sacrificed (n = 10 per group) after 5 and 15 weeks of intervention. The disease severity was confirmed by Masson’s trichrome or Sirius red staining. Metagenomics sequencing and fecal untargeted metabolomics were performed to evaluate the composition and metabolic function of IM in parallel with the development of cirrhosis. Results: The CCl4-treated mice presented liver fibrosis at 5 weeks and liver cirrhosis at 15 weeks indicated by collagen deposition and pseudo-lobule formation, respectively. Mice with liver cirrhosis showed distinct microbial composition from NC, even in the earlier fibrosis stage. Importantly, both of the liver fibrosis and cirrhosis mice were characterized with the depletion of Deltaproteobacteria (p < 0.05) and enrichment of Akkermansia (p < 0.05). Furthermore, fecal metabolomics revealed distinguished metabolomics profiles of mice with liver fibrosis and cirrhosis from the NC. Notably, pathway enrichment analysis pointed to remarkable disturbance of purine (p < 0.001 at 5 weeks, p = 0.034 at 15 weeks) and pyrimidine metabolic pathways (p = 0.005 at 5 weeks, p = 0.006 at 15 weeks) during the development of liver cirrhosis. Interestingly, the disorders of pyrimidine and purine metabolites like the known microbial metabolites thymidine and 2′-deoxyuridine had already occurred in liver fibrosis and continued in cirrhosis. Conclusion: These novel findings indicated the crucial role of IM-modulated pyrimidine and purine metabolites in the development of liver cirrhosis, which provides microbial targets for disease prevention.

Abstract
The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is increasing, which is concerning because IBD is a known risk factor for the development of colorectal cancer. Emerging evidence highlights environmental factors, particularly dietary factors and gut microbiota dysbiosis, as pivotal inducers of IBD onset. Goji berry, an ancient tonic food and a nutraceutical supplement, contains a range of phytochemicals such as polysaccharides, carotenoids, and polyphenols. Among these phytochemicals, L. barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) are the most important functional constituents, which have protective effects against oxidative stress, inflammation, and neurodegeneration. Recently, the beneficial effects of goji berry and associated LBPs consumption were linked to prebiotic effects, which can prevent dysbiosis associated with IBD. This review assessed pertinent literature on the protective effects of goji berry against IBD focusing on the gut microbiota and their metabolites in mediating the observed beneficial effects.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the modulation of gut microbiota by fermented raspberry juice (FRJ) both in vitro and in vivo. Results showed that total phenolic content and antioxidant activities of FRJ reached the highest after fermentation for 42 h. Seventeen phenolic compounds were contained in FRJ, mainly including ellagic acid (496.64 ± 2.91 μg/g) and anthocyanins (total concentration: 387.93 μg/g). FRJ modulated the gut microbiota into a healthy in vitro status, with increase of valeric and isovaleric acids production. In healthy mice, all FRJ treatments improved the production of acetic, butyric and isovaleric acids as well as the gene expression of ZO-1, Claudin-1, Claudin-4, Ocdudin, E-cadherin and Muc-2. Moreover, variable gut microbial compositions were found among the groups fed diet-supplemented the different doses of FRJ, within low and median doses of FRJ may regulate the microbiota to a healthier state compared to the high dose supplementation. This study indicated that fermentation is a potential way to produce plant-based juices, which could reshape the gut microbiota and improve the host health.

Abstract
Caffeic acid (CA) is one of the major phenolic acids of coffee with multiple biological activities. Our previous study found that 500 mg/kg of chlorogenic acid (CGA) had the potential capacity of alleviating colonic inflammation. Moreover, CGA can be degraded into caffeic acid (CA) by the gut microbiota in the colon. Therefore, we hypothesize that CA can exert protective effects on colonic inflammation. To test the hypothesis, 251 mg/kg CA was supplemented to DSS-induced colitis mice. The results showed that CA treatment recovered DSS-induced disease activity index (DAI), colon length, and histopathology scores of colon tissue. Additionally, CA treatment significantly decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and increased the level of IL-10, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT) in serum. qPCR results indicated that CA treatment dramatically downregulated mRNA expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α as well as upregulated SOD1, GPX1, GPX2, CAT, and IL-10. In addition, CA supplementation significantly increased mRNA expression of Nrf-2, HO-1, and NQO1, which showed its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities potentially by activating the Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway. Moreover, CA supplementation prevented gut barrier damage by enhancing Occludin gene expression. Furthermore, CA supplementation altered the gut microbiome composition by decreasing the relative abundance of Bacteroides and Turicibacter, and enhancing the relative abundance of Alistipes and Dubosiella. Meanwhile, CA supplementation increases the abundance of Dubosiella and Akkermansia. In conclusion, CA supplementation could effectively alleviate DSS-induced colitis by improving the defense against oxidative stress and inflammatory response.

Abstract
Numerous nutraceuticals and botanical food supplements are used with the intention of modulating body weight. A recent review examined the main food supplements used in weight loss, dividing them according to the main effects for which they were investigated. The direct or indirect effects exerted on the intestinal microbiota can also contribute to the effectiveness of these substances. The aim of this review is to evaluate whether any prebiotic effects, which could help to explain their efficacy or ineffectiveness, are documented in the recent literature for the main nutraceuticals and herbal food supplements used for weight loss management. Several prebiotic effects have been reported for various nutraceutical substances, which have shown activity on Bifidobacterium spp., Lactobacillus spp., Akkermansia muciniphila, Faecalibacterium prausnitzi, Roseburia spp., and the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio. Different prebiotics have beneficial effects on weight and the related metabolic profile, in some cases even acting on the microbiota with mechanisms that are completely independent from those nutraceuticals for which certain products are normally used. Further studies are necessary to clarify the different levels at which a nutraceutical substance can exert its action.

Abstract
Purple-fleshed potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a good dietary source of anthocyanins, flavonols, and polyphenolic acids, mostly chlorogenic acid. The objective of this study was to examine the impacts of cooking methods including boiling, steaming, and the newly developed vacuum-sealed boiling (VSBoil) on extractability and bioactivity of polyphenolic compounds in a purple potato (PP) cultivar, Purple Pelisse. Data showed that boiling and steaming reduced the total polyphenolic content in PP. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that steaming slightly reduced the extractable chlorogenic acid content, while VSBoil increased it. For DPPH free radical scavenging activities, VSBoil and steaming effectively preserved the antioxidant activity of a polyphenol-rich extract of PP, while boiling resulted in a significant reduction compared to raw potato extract. All extracts effectively suppressed bursts of intracellular reactive oxygen species in human colonic epithelial cells upon hydrogen peroxide induction, of which the extract from the VSBoil group showed the highest antioxidant potential. In addition, all extracts showed anti-inflammatory effects in Caco-2 cells induced with tumor necrosis factor-α. In conclusion, the content and bioactivity of extractable polyphenols were largely retained in PP subjected to different cooking processes. VSBoil resulted in the highest content of extractable polyphenolic compounds and bioactivity among tested cooking methods.

Abstract
Our previous studies have shown that chlorogenic acid (CGA) could significantly improve acute and chronic liver injury through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. However, its effect on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are not entirely clear. This study aims to explore the effect of CGA on NAFLD induced by high-fat diet (HFD) and whether it regulates the gut microbiota and Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). NAFLD mice were established by HFD and treated with or without CGA. Serum transaminase, fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood lipids, insulin, GLP-1 and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were detected. Liver histology was evaluated with Hematoxylin-eosin staining. Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway was analyzed with western blot and inflammatory cytokines were detected with real-time PCR. The content of gut microbiota were determined with real-time PCR of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Expressions of intestine tight junctional protein were examined with immunohistochemistry. CGA could alleviate HFD-induced hepatic steatosis and inflammation, reduce serum transaminase, FBG and blood lipids, increase insulin sensitivity. CGA also could reverse HFD-induced activation of TLR4 signaling pathway and expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in liver. Meanwhile, CGA increased the content of Bifidobacterium and reduced the content of Escherichia coli in feces. Furthermore, CGA could increase the expression of tight junction proteins Occludin and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) in intestinal tissue. Moreover, CGA could the level of LPS and increased the level of GLP-1 in portal vein. These results indicated that CGA protected against HFD-induced hepatic steatosis and inflammation probably through its anti-inflammatory effects associated with regulation of gut microbiota and an increase of GLP-1 secretion and thus could be used as a potential drug for prevention and treatment of NAFLD.
