Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections affect approximately 296 million people around the world, and the prevalence of any past or present HBV infection during the years 2015-2018 was as high as 4.3%. Acute HBV infection often presents with nonspecific symptoms and is usually self-limited, but 5% of patients can have persistent infections leading to chronic HBV infection and the risk of turning into chronic HBV infection is significantly higher in babies with vertical transmission (95%). Patients with chronic HBV infection are usually asymptomatic, but 15 to 40% of chronic HBV carriers develop cirrhosis and/or hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition to liver-related disorders, HBV is also associated with several extrahepatic complications, including glomerulonephritis, cryoglobulinemia, neurologic disorders, psychological manifestations, polyarthritis, and dermatologic disorders. Making the diagnosis of HBV can be challenging since patients with chronic infections can remain symptom-free for decades before developing cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma, and patients with acute HBV infection may have only mild, nonspecific symptoms. Therefore, understanding how this virus causes extrahepatic complications can help clinicians consider this possibility in patients with diverse symptom presentations. The pathophysiology of these extrahepatic disorders likely involves immune-related tissue injury following immune complex formation and inflammatory cascades. In some cases, direct viral infection of extrahepatic tissue may cause a clinical syndrome. Currently, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases recommends treatment of chronic HBV infections with interferon therapy and/or nucleos(t)ide analogs, and this treatment has been reported to improve some extrahepatic disorders in some patients with chronic HBV infection. These extrahepatic complications have a significant role in disease outcomes and increase medical costs, morbidity, and mortality. Therefore, understanding the frequency and pathogenesis of these extrahepatic complications provides important information for both specialists and nonspecialists and may help clinicians identify patients at an earlier stage of their infection.

Abstract
The development of lymphoma is a complex multistep process that integrates numerous experimental findings and clinical data that have not yet yielded a definitive explanation. Studies of oncogenic viruses can help to deepen insight into the pathogenesis of lymphoma, and identifying associations between lymphoma and viruses that are established and unidentified should lead to cellular and pharmacologically targeted antiviral strategies for treating malignant lymphoma. This review focuses on the pathogenesis of lymphomas associated with hepatitis B and C, Epstein-Barr, and human immunodeficiency viruses as well as Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus to clarify the current status of basic information and recent advances in the development of virus-associated lymphomas.

Abstract
Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a major concern in patients undergoing chemotherapy for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL); however, the overall risk of FN is difficult to assess. This study aimed to develop a model for predicting the occurrence of FN in patients with DLBCL. In this multicenter, retrospective, observational analysis, a multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between FN incidence and pretreatment clinical factors. We included adult inpatients and outpatients (aged ≥ 18 years) diagnosed with DLBCL who were treated with chemotherapy. The study examined 246 patients. Considering FN occurring during the first cycle of chemotherapy as the primary outcome, a predictive model with a total score of 5 points was constructed as follows: 1 point each for a positive hepatitis panel, extranodal involvement, and a high level of soluble interleukin-2 receptor and 2 points for lymphopenia. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of this model was 0.844 (95% confidence interval: 0.777-0.911). Our predictive model can assess the risk of FN before patients with DLBCL start chemotherapy, leading to better outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In a nationwide, matched cohort study, we aimed to investigate risks of haematologic cancers among individuals tested for Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) antibodies, and among serum Bb seropositive individuals. METHODS We identified all Bb seropositive individuals in Denmark (1993-2020) (n = 52 200) and constructed two age- and sex-matched comparison cohorts: (a) Bb seronegative controls (n = 104 400) and (b) background population controls (n = 261 000). We calculated short-term OR (aOR) (<1 month of study inclusion), and long-term hazard ratios (aHR) (>1 month after study inclusion) adjusted for age and sex. We stratified seropositive individuals on only Bb-IgM seropositive (n = 26 103), only Bb-IgG seropositive (n = 18 698), and Bb-IgM-and-IgG seropositive (n = 7399). RESULTS Compared with the background population, individuals tested for Bb antibodies had increased short-term (aOR: 12.6, 95% CI: 10.1-15.6) and long-term (aHR: 1.3, 95% CI: 1.2-1.4) risk of haematologic cancers. The Bb seropositive individuals had no increased risk of haematologic cancers compared with those who tested negative for Bb, except that Bb-IgM-and-IgG seropositive individuals had increased long-term risk of chronic lymphatic leukaemia (aHR: 2.0, 95% CI: 1.2-3.4). DISCUSSION Our results suggest that Bb antibody testing is included in the work-up of unspecific symptoms preceding diagnosis of haematologic cancers. Bb-IgM-and-IgG seropositivity was associated with a two-fold increased long-term risk of chronic lymphatic leukaemia, which warrants further investigation.

Abstract
Over the last decade, epidemiological studies have discovered a link between hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The regression of HCV-associated NHL after HCV eradication is the most compelling proof supporting HCV infection's role in lymphoproliferative diseases. HBV infection was found to significantly enhance the incidence of NHL, according to the epidemiological data. The exact mechanism of HCV leading to NHL has not been fully clarified, and there are mainly the following possible mechanisms: (1) Indirect mechanisms: stimulation of B lymphocytes by extracellular HCV and cytokines; (2) Direct mechanisms: oncogenic effects mediated by intracellular HCV proteins; (3) hit-and-run mechanism: permanent genetic B lymphocytes damage by the transitional entry of HCV. The specific role of HBV in the occurrence of NHL is still unclear, and the research on its mechanism is less extensively explored than HCV, and there are mainly the following possible mechanisms: (1) Indirect mechanisms: stimulation of B lymphocytes by extracellular HBV; (2) Direct mechanisms: oncogenic effects mediated by intracellular HBV DNA. In fact, it is reasonable to consider direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) as first-line therapy for indolent HCV-associated B-NHL patients who do not require immediate chemotherapy. Chemotherapy for NHL is affected by HBV infection and replication. At the same time, chemotherapy can also activate HBV replication. Following recent guidelines, all patients with HBsAg positive/HBV DNA≥2,000 IU/mL should be treated for HBV. The data on epidemiology, interventional studies, and molecular mechanisms of HCV and HBV-associated B-NHL are systematically summarized in this review.

Abstract
Background Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) involving the breast, spleen, and bone in a male patient with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is extremely rare in clinical practice. Case Presentation We report a case of DLBCL involving the breast, spleen, and bone (triple expression of Bcl-2+, Bcl-6+, and 70% positive C-mcy) in a male patient with HBV admitted to our hospital. The patient was treated with EPOCH×4, lenalidomide+EPOCH×2 chemotherapy, intermittent methotrexate intrathecal injections to prevent central invasion, and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). The patient is currently in complete remission, and the follow-up time was 43 months. Conclusion A patient with DLBCL involving the breast, spleen, and bone can be treated with a combination of multiple regimens. If the patient's economic conditions permit it, ASCT can be considered.

Abstract
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is potentially associated with liver cancer, and advances in various drugs have led to progress in the treatment of hepatitis C and attempts to prevent its transition to liver cancer. Furthermore, reactivation of HCV has been observed in the treatment of lymphoma, during which the immortalization and proliferation of lymphocytes occur, which leads to the possibility of further stimulating cytokines and the like and possibly to the development of lymphoid malignancy. There are also cases in which the disappearance of lymphoid malignancy has been observed by treating HCV and suppressing HCV-Ribonucleic acid (RNA), as well as cases of recurrence with an increase in HCV-RNA. While HCV-associated lymphoma has a poor prognosis, improving the prognosis with Direct Acting Antivirals (DAA) has recently been reported. The reduction and eradication of HCV-RNA by means of DAA is thus important for the treatment of lymphoid malignancy associated with HCV infection, and HCV-RNA can presumably play a role as a biomarker. This review provides an overview of what is currently known about HCV-associated lymphoma, its epidemiology, the mechanisms underlying the progression to lymphoma, its treatment, the potential and limits of HCV-RNA as a therapeutic biomarker, and biomarkers that are expected now that DAA therapy has been developed.

Abstract
The tick-borne pathogen Neoehrlichia (N.) mikurensis is implicated in persistent infection of the vascular endothelium. B cells are crucial for the host defence to this infection. Chronic stimulation of B cells may result in B-cell transformation and lymphoma. Five patients with malignant B-cell lymphoma and concomitant N. mikurensis infection were investigated regarding clinical picture, lymphoma subtype, B-cell lymphoma immunophenotype and IGHV (variable region of the immunoglobulin heavy) gene repertoire. Three of the five patients improved markedly and ceased lymphoma treatment after doxycycline treatment to eliminate N. mikurensis. Sequencing the B-cell lymphoma IGHV genes revealed preferred usage of the IGHV1 (IGHV1-2, and -69) and IGHV3 (IGHV3-15, -21, -23) families. In conclusion, N. mikurensis infection may drive the development of malignant B-cell lymphomas. Eradication of the pathogen appears to induce remission with apparent curing of the lymphoma in some cases.

Neoplastic and Autoimmune Comorbidities in Patients with Primary Cutaneous B-Cell Lymphoma. Hematol Rep 2023; 15:157-165. Abstract
Primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas (PCBCLs) constitute a rare subset of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), with distinctive clinical and biological characteristics. The risk of autoimmune or neoplastic comorbidities in subjects with NHL has been extensively reported in the literature, but the data available are not directly applicable to PCBCLs. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of relevant medical conditions, with a primary focus on autoimmune and neoplastic disorders, in subjects with PCBCL. We performed a retrospective observational study involving 56 patients diagnosed histologically with PCBCL and 54 sex- and age-matched controls. Our results show a statistically significant association for neoplastic comorbidities in general (41.1% vs. 22.2%, p = 0.034) and hematological malignancies specifically (19.6% vs. 1.9%, p = 0.0041) with PCBCL compared to controls. We did not highlight a statistically significant difference in the frequency of autoimmune comorbidities (21.4% vs. 9.3%, p = 0.1128) and of chronic viral hepatitis (7.1% vs. 0, p = 0.1184). Finally, type 2 diabetes (19.6% vs. 1.9%, p = 0.0041) was significantly associated with PCBCL. Our preliminary data supporting the association between PCBCLs and neoplastic disorders suggest that altered immune surveillance may be a common predisposing mechanism.

Abstract
Chronic HCV infection remains a global health concern due to its involvement in hepatic and extrahepatic diseases, including B cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (BNHL). Clinical and epidemiological evidence support a causal role for HCV in BNHL development, although mechanistic insight is lacking. We performed RNA-sequencing on peripheral B cells from patients with HCV alone, BNHL alone, and HCV-associated BNHL to identify unique and shared transcriptional profiles associated with transformation. In patients with HCV-associated BNHL, we observed the enrichment of an anergic-like gene signature and evidence of clonal expansion that was correlated with the expression of epigenetic regulatory genes. Our data support a role for viral-mediated clonal expansion of anergic-like B cells in HCV-associated BNHL development and suggest epigenetic dysregulation as a potential mechanism driving expansion. We propose epigenetic mechanisms may be involved in both HCV-associated lymphoma and regulation of B cell anergy, representing an attractive target for clinical interventions.

Abstract
The hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection leads to chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocarcinoma. However, about 20% of patients experience extrahepatic manifestations such as polyarteritis nodosa, non-rheumatoid arthritis, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cryoglobulinemic vasculitis, and glomerulonephritis. These influence the patient's morbidity, quality of life and mortality. The treatment of an HBV infection is based on nucleotide analogues (NAs) which are safe and effective for the suppression of HBV-DNA in almost 100% of cases. A few studies have shown that NAs induce a viral response and an improvement of extrahepatic diseases. There is a lack of a thorough analysis of the available treatments for extrahepatic HBV manifestations. In 90% to 100% of cases, the NAs stop the HBV replication, and they produce a clinical response in the majority of patients with mild to moderate extrahepatic signs/symptoms. Arthritis can definitely disappear after the HBV elimination and, in some cases, the HBV eradication following NAs therapy appears to improve the renal function in HBV-related nephropathies. Plasma exchange can be used in subjects who are suffering from the most aggressive forms of cryoglobulinemic vasculitis and glomerulonephritis, progressive peripheral neuropathy, and life-threatening cases, and this can be combined with glucocorticosteroids and antiviral agents. In selected refractory patients, the use of rituximab in conjunction with NAs therapy can be considered. The review provides an update on extrahepatic conditions that are linked to HBV and the impact of treating HBV with NAs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND After several cases of peculiar hematological malignancies following introduction of new oral anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatments in our recent practice, we aimed to systematically identify all cases of hematological malignancies (HM) in patients with chronic HCV infection and to compare them according to the prescription of oral anti-HCV Direct Acting Antivirals (DAA) treatment or not. MATERIAL/METHODS In this single-center retrospective observational study, we included all patients with confirmed HM and chronic HCV infection managed between 2010 and 2019 in the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital, Paris. Non-inclusion criteria were a benign hematological disorder, an HM preceding chronic HCV infection and HCV acute infection. We compared characteristics of patients who received DAA before HM diagnosis to those with no DAA before HM. RESULTS Over the 10 years, 61 cases of HM among HCV infected patients were identified (female 29%, median age of 58.0 years [IQR 17]). Twenty-one received DAA before the onset of HM (Group DAA+) and 40 did not (Group DAA-) including 22 having received DAA after HM. In the DAA+ group, oral NS5B, NS5A and NS3A inhibitors were used in 90, 76 and 29% respectively. HM developed in the two years following DAA initiation in 76%. Eight (38%) had Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, 5 (24%) had an Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) including two with a mixed phenotype, 2 each had Hodgkin Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma or a myeloproliferative disorder and one each had a chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia or AL Amyloidosis. In the Group DAA-, HM were NHL in 20(50%) patients, Myeloproliferative neoplasms in 7 (17%), Multiple Myeloma in 5, Hodgkin Lymphoma in 3, Myelodysplastic syndrome and AML in 2 (5%) each and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in one. No significant difference between the groups DAA + and - was found according to age, sex, HCV genotype, viral load, co-infection or type and exposition of previous HCV treatments. AML, liver transplantation and cirrhosis were significantly more frequent in the DAA+ group (p = 0.020, 0.045 and 0.032, respectively). CONCLUSION AML seemed more frequent after using DAA treatments, notably in severe HCV patients including cirrhotic and/or liver transplanted patients. A multicentric observational study is ongoing to confirm and explore the results.

Abstract
Inhibitors targeting Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) have revolutionized the treatment for various B-cell malignancies but are limited by acquired resistance after prolonged treatment as a result of mutations in BTK. Here, by a combination of structural modeling, in vitro assays, and deep phospho-tyrosine proteomics, we demonstrated that four clinically observed BTK mutations—C481F, C481Y, C481R, and L528W—inactivated BTK kinase activity both in vitro and in diffused large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) cells. Paradoxically, we found that DLBCL cells harboring kinase-inactive BTK exhibited intact B cell receptor (BCR) signaling, unperturbed transcription, and optimal cellular growth. Moreover, we determined that DLBCL cells with kinase-inactive BTK remained addicted to BCR signaling and were thus sensitive to targeted BTK degradation by the proteolysis-targeting chimera. By performing parallel genome-wide CRISPR-Cas9 screening in DLBCL cells with WT or kinase-inactive BTK, we discovered that DLBCL cells with kinase-inactive BTK displayed increased dependence on Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) for their growth and/or survival. Our study demonstrates that the kinase activity of BTK is not essential for oncogenic BCR signaling and suggests that BTK’s noncatalytic function is sufficient to sustain the survival of DLBCL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leukemic hematopoietic cells acquire enhanced self-renewal capacity and impaired differentiation. The emergence of symptomatic leukemia also requires the acquisition of a clonal proliferative advantage. Untreated leukemia patients usually experience an aggressive process. However, spontaneous remission occasionally occurs in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), most frequently after recovery from a febrile episode, and this is generally attributed to the triggering of antineoplastic immunity. There may be another explanation for the spontaneous remission as implicated in this paper.
CASE SUMMARY A 63-year-old Chinese man presented with high fever, abdominal pain and urticaria-like skin lesions. He was diagnosed with AML-M4 with t(8;21) (q22;q22)/RUNX1-RUNX1T1 based on morphological, immunological, cytogenetic and molecular analyses. He had a complex chromosome rea-rrangement of 48,XY,t(8;21)(q22;q22),+13,+13[9]/49,idem,+mar[9]/49,idem,+8[2]. He also had a mutated tyrosine kinase domain in fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 gene. He was treated with antibiotics and glucocorticoids for gastrointestinal infection and urticaria-like skin lesions. The infection and skin lesions were quickly resolved. Unexpectedly, he achieved hematological remission along with resolution of the febrile episode, gastrointestinal symptoms and skin lesions. Notably, after relapse, repeating these treatments resulted in a return to hematological remission. Unfortunately, he demonstrated strong resistance to antibiotic and glucocorticoid treatment after the second relapse and died of sepsis from bacterial infection with multidrug resistance. The main clinical feature of this patient was that symptomatic AML emerged with flaring of the gut inflammatory disorder and it subsided after resolution of the inflammation. Learning from the present case raises the possibility that in a subgroup of AML patients, the proliferative advantage of leukemia cells may critically require the presence of inflammatory stresses.
CONCLUSION Inflammatory stresses, most likely arising from gastrointestinal infection, may sustain the growth and survival advantage of leukemic cells.

Abstract
Primary hepatic mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a relatively rare disease with low malignancy, and its aetiology is unclear. A 65-year-old man presented with abdominal pain. Hepatitis virus examination revealed a previous hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, and a carbon-13 urea breath test result was positive for the patient. Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a patch of abnormal density in the right posterior lobe of the liver. The patient underwent VI segment hepatectomy and was pathologically diagnosed with hepatic MALT lymphoma. After the operation, he received quadruple anti-Helicobacter pylori (HP) therapy and refused other treatments. He has been followed up by telephone for 20 months after discharge and is now in a stable condition. In this study, we counted 105 cases of hepatic MALT lymphomas reported in English or Chinese since 1995 and summarised the clinical characteristics and concomitant diseases in this condition. Based on the literature review, we speculated that chronic infectious diseases, especially viral infections (including hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HBV) and HP infection, are associated with the pathogenesis of primary hepatic MALT lymphoma. In addition, autoimmune diseases might also play a role in this condition.

Abstract
Individuals with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) have worse chemotherapy efficacy and poorer outcomes. It is still unclear whether long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) serve as prognostic and therapeutic targets in the chemotherapy resistance of individuals with DLBCL and HBV infection. Here we found that the core component of HBV (HBX) directly upregulated the expression of lncNBAT1, which was closely associated with the chemotherapy outcomes of HBV-infected individuals with DLBCL. Upregulation of lncNBAT1 reduced the sensitivity of DLBCL cells to chemotherapeutic agents (methotrexate [MTX] or cytarabine [Ara-C]) that induced S phase arrest, whereas knockdown of lncNBAT1 significantly relieved the chemoresistance of HBX-expressing DLBCLs. Mechanistically, lncNBAT1 could interact with the signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) to prevent its enrichment at the promoter region of the functional target gene apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme catalytic subunit 3A (APOBEC3A), inhibiting expression of APOBEC3A and inducing resistance to MTX in DLBCL cells. Furthermore, clinical data analysis showed that lncNBAT1 and APOBEC3A expression was closely related to the poor prognosis and short survival of individuals with DLBCL. Our findings suggest a potential prognostic marker and a candidate lncRNA target for treating HBV-infected individuals with DLBCL.

Abstract
Multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable plasma cell malignancy. While its origin is enigmatic, an association with infectious pathogens including hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been suggested. Here we report nine patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) or MM with previous HCV infection, six of whom received antiviral treatment. We studied the evolution of the gammopathy disease, according to anti-HCV treatment and antigen specificity of purified monoclonal immunoglobulin, determined using the INNO-LIA™ HCV Score assay, dot-blot assays, and a multiplex infectious antigen microarray. The monoclonal immunoglobulin from 6/9 patients reacted against HCV. Four of these patients received antiviral treatment and had a better evolution than untreated patients. Following antiviral treatment, one patient with MM in third relapse achieved complete remission with minimal residual disease negativity. For two patients who did not receive antiviral treatment, disease progressed. For the two patients whose monoclonal immunoglobulin did not react against HCV, antiviral treatment was not effective for MGUS or MM disease. Our results suggest a causal relationship between HCV infection and MGUS and MM progression. When HCV was eliminated, chronic antigen-stimulation disappeared, allowing control of clonal plasma cells. This opens new possibilities of treatment for MGUS and myeloma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES No clear consensus has been reached about the clinical features in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) patients. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the clinical characteristics and prognosis of NHL patients with chronic HBV infection (HBsAg+). METHODS Seven electronic databases were searched for relevant studies up to 31 January 2021. Hazard ratio (HR) or odds ratio (OR) corresponding to 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated to estimate the outcomes. The primary outcome was survival outcome, including overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Subgroup analysis was performed in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients. RESULTS Twenty-three retrospective studies, comprising of 1202 HBsAg+ NHL patients and 4448 HBsAg- NHL patients, were included. Twenty-two studies were conducted on Chinese patients. Compared with HBsAg- NHL patients, significantly shorter OS (HR 1.68; 95% CI 1.48-1.91) and PFS (HR 1.80; 95% CI 1.20-2.71), lower rate of complete remission (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.44-0.80) and higher frequency of hepatic dysfunction during chemotherapy (OR 3.46; 95% CI 2.61-4.57) were demonstrated in HBsAg+ NHL patients. Moreover, HBsAg+ patients were characterized by a younger age of disease onset, advanced disease stage, higher level of LDH and more frequent presence of B symptoms, and involvement of spleen and liver at diagnosis. Furthermore, subgroup analysis in DLBCL patients was also showed similar results. CONCLUSION Our study implicated that NHL patients, especially DLBCL, with chronic HBV infection displayed inferior prognosis, higher incidence of hepatic dysfunction during chemotherapy and distinct clinical features.

Abstract
HCV is a virus that can cause chronic infection which can result in a systemic disease that may include many rheumatologic manifestations such as arthritis, myalgia, sicca syndrome, cryoglobulinemia vasculitis as well as other non-rheumatological disorders (renal failure, onco-haematological malignancies). In this population, the high frequency of rheumatoid factor (45-70%), antinuclear (10-40%) and anticardiolipin (15-20%) antibodies is a B-cell mediated finding sustained by the infection. However, the possibility that a primitive rheumatic pathology may coexist with the HCV infection is not to be excluded thus complicating a differential diagnosis between primitive and HCV-related disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence suggests that hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). However, no clear consensus has been reached about the clinical features and effective treatment of HCV-associated NHL patients. We therefore performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to explore the clinical characteristics and effectiveness of antiviral treatment or rituximab administration among NHL patients with HCV infection. METHODS Eight electronic databases, including PubMed, OVID, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials, WANFANG, CNKI, and VIP, were searched for eligible studies up to July 31, 2021. The hazard ratio (HR) or odds ratio (OR) corresponding to the 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated to estimate the outcomes. Publication bias was assessed by Egger's and Begg's tests. Statistical analysis was performed with RevMan 5.4 software and Stata version 15. RESULTS There were 27 shortlisted articles out of a total of 13,368 NHL patients included in the current meta-analysis. Our results demonstrated that NHL patients with HCV infection had a significantly shorter overall survival (OS: HR 1.89; 95% CI 1.42-2.51, P < 0.0001) and progression-free survival (PFS: HR 1.58; 95% CI 1.26-1.98, P < 0.0001), a lower overall response rate (ORR: OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.46-0.73, P < 0.00001) and a higher incidence of hepatic dysfunction during chemotherapy (OR 5.96; 95% CI 2.61-13.62, P < 0.0001) than NHL patients without HCV infection. HCV-positive NHL patients exhibited an advanced disease stage, an elevated level of LDH, a high-intermediate and high IPI/FLIPI risk as well as a higher incidence of spleen and liver involvement. Moreover, antiviral treatment prolonged survival (OS: HR 0.38; 95% CI 0.24-0.60, P < 0.0001), reduced disease progression [PFS/DFS (disease-free survival): HR 0.63; 95% CI 0.46-0.86, P = 0.003] and reinforced the treatment response (ORR: OR 2.62; 95% CI 1.34-5.11, P = 0.005) among the HCV-infected NHL patients. Finally, rituximab administration was associated with a favourable OS, while liver cirrhosis and low levels of albumin predicted a poor OS for HCV-positive NHL patients. CONCLUSIONS The current study provided compelling evidence about an inferior prognosis and distinct clinical characteristics among HCV-associated NHL patients. Antiviral treatment and rituximab-containing regimens were shown to be efficacious in improving the clinical outcomes of NHL patients with HCV infection.

Abstract
Background While the epidemiologic association between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is established, little is known about the pathological characteristics and outcome of DLBCL arising in patients with HBV infection. Methods We retrospectively studied a cohort of 420 patients with DLBCL for the incidence of HBV infection, and the clinicopathologic features and prognostic factors in HBsAg-positive DLBCL patients in China, a hepatitis B endemic area. Results In our study, 127 (30.2%) patients were HBsAg-positive. HBsAg-positive DLBCL displayed a younger median onset age (50 vs. 54 years, P = 0.002), more frequent involvement of the spleen (19.7% vs. 6.1%, P < 0.001), less frequent involvement of the small and large intestine (2.3% vs. 11.2%, P = 0.003), more advanced disease (stage III/IV: 56.7% vs. 45.1%, P = 0.028), and lower expression rate of MYC (49.1% vs. 66.7%, P = 0.026). The median follow-up time was 61.9 months. Univariate analysis showed that there was no significant difference in overall survival (OS) between HBsAg-negative and -positive DLBCL (P = 0.577). In the HBsAg-positive DLBCL subgroup, age older than 60 years, advanced disease, elevated lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), spleen involvement, B symptoms (fever, night sweats, weight loss), and double expressers of MYC and BCL2 had a significantly worse outcome, and patients treated with R-CHOP (rituximab plus cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) had a better prognosis. Multivariate analysis further confirmed that spleen involvement and rituximab use were independent prognostic factors in HBsAg-positive DLBCL patients. Conclusions Our study indicates that HBsAg-positive DLBCL has unique clinicopathological features and independent prognostic factors. Moreover, under antiviral prophylaxis, the survival of DLBCL patients with HBV infections was comparable to that of HBV-negative patients, and the use of rituximab significantly improved OS in HBsAg-positive DLBCL patients. Abstract
Despite the link between HCV and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders has been established, the association between occult hepatitis C virus infection and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders remains obscure. The present study intended to identify the possible association between occult HCV infection and malignant lymphoproliferative disorders. Newly diagnosed patients with LPDs were screened for the presence of HCV-RNA in both plasma and PBMCs. PBMCs of the subjects were also, examined by transmission and immuno-electron microscopy. LPD patients showed a high percentage of HCV infection (71.9%): OCI-HCV (37.5%) and HCV (34.38%). Meanwhile, 28.13% of LPD patients did not show any evidence of HCV infection. Ultrastructural examination of PBMCs revealed the presence of intracytoplasmic vacuoles enclosing viral like particles, which were less prominent in occult HCV patients. The possibility of occult HCV should be considered in patients with LPDs which can be helpful in the management of the treatment protocol in order to set up a balance between the control of the tumor progression and minimizing post chemotherapy complications related to HCV infection.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus reactivation (HBV-R), which can lead to HBV-related morbidity and mortality, is a common and well-known complication that occurs during the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) patients with current or past exposure to HBV infection. HBV-R is thought to be closely associated with chemotherapeutic or immunosuppressive therapies. However, immunosuppressive agents such as anti-CD20 antibodies (e.g., rituximab and ofatumumab), glucocorticoids, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) administered to NHL patients during treatment can cause deep immunodepression and place them at high risk of HBV-R. In this review, we explore the current evidence, the guidelines of several national and international organizations, and the recommendations of expert panels relating to the definition, risk factors, screening and monitoring strategies, whether to use prophylaxis or pre-emptive therapy, and the optimal antiviral agent and duration of antiviral therapy for HBV-R.

Abstract
Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) are underestimated causes of cancer in West Africa where chronic viral hepatitis and HIV are endemic. While the association with HIV infection has already been characterized, limited information is available on the association between chronic viral hepatitis and NHL in sub-Saharan Africa. A case-control study was conducted in referral hospitals of Abidjan (Cote d'Ivoire) and Dakar (Senegal). Cases of NHL were matched with controls on age, gender and participating site. The diagnosis of NHL relied on local pathological examination completed with immunohistochemistry. HIV, HBV and HCV serology tests were systematically performed. A conditional logistic regression model estimated the associations by the Odds Ratio (OR) with their 95% confidence interval (CI). A total of 117 NHL cases (Abidjan n = 97, Dakar n = 20) and their 234 matched controls were enrolled. Cases were predominantly men (68.4%) and had a median age of 50 years (IQR 37-57). While Diffuse Large B-cell lymphoma were the most reported morphological type (n = 35) among mature B-cell NHL, the proportion mature T-cell NHL (30%) was high. The prevalence figures of HBV, HCV and HIV infection were 12.8%, 7.7% and 14.5%, respectively among cases of NHL. In multivariate analysis, HBV, HCV and HIV were independently associated with NHL with OR of 2.23 (CI 1.05-4.75), 4.82 (CI 1.52-15.29) and 3.32 (CI 1.54-7.16), respectively. Chronic viral hepatitis B and C were significantly associated with NHL in West Africa. Timely preventive measures against HBV infection and access to curative anti-HCV treatment might prevent a significant number of NHL.

Abstract
In 2016 there were an estimated 7,460 newly diagnosed patients with marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) in the US, which comprised 7% of all mature non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL). Based on data from the US SEER-18 program from 2001-2017, the age-standardized incidence rate for MZL was 19.6 per 1,000,000 person-years; 9% of MZL cases were splenic MZL (SMZL), 30% nodal MZL (NMZL), and 61% extranodal MZL (EMZL) of mucusa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). Incidence rates were slightly higher in men for SMZL and NMZL, but similar for EMZL, and increased steeply with age for all MZL subtypes. The incidence (age-standardized per 1,000,000) of MZL was highest among non-Hispanic whites (20.7), followed by Hispanics of all races (17.6), non-Hispanic blacks (15.4), and Asian/Pacific islanders (15.0). The incidence of MZL increased +1.0% per year in the US from 2001-2017, with increases reported in other countries during this timeframe. The 5-year relative survival rate for MZL in the US was 89.8% and was similar across racial/ethnic groups and by sex; survival rates have been increasing in the US and other countries. Established risk factors for MZL (or MZL subtypes) include family history of NHL, genetic loci in the HLA region, Helicobacter pylori infection (gastric MALT lymphoma), and several autoimmune diseases (Sjögren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus and Hashimoto thyroiditis), with strong (but not definitive) evidence for Chlamydia psittaci (ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma), Borrelia burgdorferi (cutaneous MZL), hepatitis C virus, human immunodeficiency virus, and solid organ transplantation. Promising risk factors that require additional study include other infections, other autoimmune conditions, trichloroethylene exposure, certain occupations, hair dye, cigarette smoking, sun exposure (protective), and alcohol use (protective). MZL is a model of an antigen-driven malignancy, where epidemiologic risk factors, tissue-specific factors, and host immune response (including the impact of chronic inflammation and immunosuppression) drive lymphomagenesis with implications for prevention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, defined as negative hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) but detectable HBV DNA in serum and liver tissue, has very rarely been described in cryoglobulinemia (CG) patients. This case report sheds light on the possible link between occult HBV infection and CG. PATIENT CONCERNS A 76-year-old man presented with rapidly deteriorating renal function within 1 year. DIAGNOSIS Cryoglobulinemic glomerulonephritis was diagnosed through renal biopsy. Initially, the patient tested negative for HBsAg, but a low HBV viral load was later discovered, indicating an occult HBV infection. Further studies also revealed Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM). INTERVENTIONS We treated the patient as WM using plasma exchange and rituximab-based immunosuppressive therapy. OUTCOMES After 1 cycle of immunosuppressive treatment, there was no improvement of renal function. Shortly after, treatment was discontinued due to an episode of life-threatening pneumonia. Hemodialysis was ultimately required. CONCLUSION Future studies are needed to explore the link between occult HBV infection and CG, to investigate the mediating role of lymphomagenesis, and to examine the effectiveness of anti-HBV drugs in treating the group of CG patients with occult HBV infection. We encourage clinicians to incorporate HBV viral load testing into the evaluation panel for CG patients especially in HBV-endemic areas, and to test HBV viral load for essential CG patients in whom CG cannot be attributed to any primary disease.

Abstract
B-cell lymphoma of spleen may be primary (most commonly splenic diffuse large B-cell lymphoma) or secondary (typically low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma). Depending on the specific lymphoma subtype, there may be a predominantly white pulp pattern of involvement, a predominantly red pulp pattern or a focal nodular pattern. Splenectomy is the ideal specimen for a multiparametric integrative diagnosis of splenic lymphoma, as it allows for a combined study of morphology, immunohistology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular genetic techniques. This review article describes the clinicopathologic characteristics of all the relevant B-cell neoplasms that may be encountered in a splenic biopsy or a splenectomy specimen.

Abstract
Malignant lymphoma originates from the lymphohematopoietic system. It can occur in any lymphoid tissue. Malignant lymphoma of the salivary gland is rare, but its incidence has increased in recent years. Its clinical- presentations are non-specific, and it is often manifested as a painless mass in a salivary gland, which can be accompanied by multiple swollen cervical lymph nodes. Confirmation of the diagnosis before an invasive procedure is difficult. Clinically, malignant lymphoma of the salivary gland tends to be misdiagnosed, leading to an inappropriate treatment plan and the ultimate delay in the optimal treatment of the disease. This article reviews the pathogenesis, clinical features, imaging findings, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of malignant lymphoma of the salivary gland.

Abstract
PURPOSE Therapeutic advances for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) have led to an increasing number of survivors. Both DLBCL and its treatments perturb the immune system, yet little is known about immune health during extended survivorship. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, we compared 21,690 survivors of DLBCL from the California Cancer Registry (CCR) to survivors of breast, prostate, head and neck, and melanoma cancers. We linked their CCR records to a statewide database documenting hospital, emergency room, and ambulatory surgery visits and investigated the incidence of autoimmune conditions, immune deficiencies, and infections 1-10 years after cancer diagnosis. RESULTS We found elevated incidence rate ratios (IRRs) for many immune-related conditions in survivors of DLBCL compared with other cancer survivors, including significantly and consistently elevated IRRs for viral and fungal pneumonias (up to 10.8-fold), meningitis (up to 5.3-fold), as well as humoral deficiency (up to 17.6-fold) and autoimmune cytopenias (up to 12-fold). IRRs for most conditions remained high even in the late survivorship period (5-10 years after cancer diagnosis). The elevated risks could not be explained by exposure to chemotherapy, stem-cell transplantation, or rituximab, except for IRRs for humoral deficiency, which were consistently higher after the incorporation of rituximab into DLBCL treatments. CONCLUSION To our knowledge, this is the largest cohort study with extended follow-up to demonstrate impaired immune health in survivors of DLBCL. The observed persistent, elevated risks for autoimmune diseases, immune deficiencies, and infectious conditions may reflect persistent immune dysregulation caused by lymphoma or treatment and may lead to excess morbidity and mortality during survivorship. Improved understanding of these risks could meaningfully improve long-term care of patients with DLBCL.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the most aggressive and deadly diseases in the world, representing the second leading cause of death. It is a multifactorial disease, in which genetic alterations play a key role, but several environmental factors also contribute to its development and progression. Infections induced by certain viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites constitute risk factors for cancer, being chronic infection associated to the development of certain types of cancer. On the other hand, susceptibility to infectious diseases is higher in cancer patients. The state of the host immune system plays a crucial role in the susceptibility to both infection and cancer. Importantly, immunosuppressive cancer treatments increase the risk of infection, by decreasing the host defenses. Furthermore, alterations in the host microbiota is also a key factor in the susceptibility to develop cancer. More recently, the identification of a tumor microbiota, in which bacteria establish a symbiotic relationship with cancer cells, opened a new area of research. There is evidence demonstrating that the interaction between bacteria and cancer cells can modulate the anticancer drug response and toxicity. The present review focuses on the interaction between microbes and cancer, specifically aiming to: (1) review the main infectious agents associated with development of cancer and the role of microbiota in cancer susceptibility; (2) highlight the higher vulnerability of cancer patients to acquire infectious diseases; (3) document the relationship between cancer cells and tissue microbiota; (4) describe the role of intratumoral bacteria in the response and toxicity to cancer therapy.

Abstract
Background China is a high endemic area for the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The studies established the epidemiology between HBV and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), but further research is necessary to clarify the potential link between HBV and DLBCL. Patients and Methods A total of 319 patients diagnosed with DLBCL were recruited as cases at First Medical Centre of Chinese PLA General Hospital from September 2010 to December 2018. During the same time, two age- and sex-matched controls were selected for each case, and the control groups comprised of 319 patients with non-hematological malignancy and 319 subjects with non-malignant conditions. Relative risk of developing DLBCL among individuals tested positive for hepatitis B surface antigen was calculated. After that, we retrospectively analyzed clinical data from DLBCL patients with different HBV infection statuses. Results The HBV infection rate of patients with DLBCL (11.60%) was significantly higher than the other two control groups (5.02% and 4.08%), indicating the risk of DLBCL may increased in HBV infections. Meanwhile, this study demonstrated an independent association between HBV infection and poorer clinical outcomes. Conclusion Our study demonstrated that HBV infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis of DLBCL and show poor outcomes in HBV-endemic China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections are associated with increased risks of lymphomas in the non-HIV setting. Their impacts on HIV-associated lymphomas deserved further studies in the modern combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) era. DESIGN We evaluated the associations between HCV, HBV and HIV-related lymphomas in the Lymphovir-ANRS-CO16 cohort. METHODS Prevalence of HCV seropositivity and chronic HBV infections were compared with those observed in the French Hospital Database on HIV (FHDH-ANRS-CO4). RESULTS Between 2008 and 2015, 179 patients with HIV-related lymphomas from 32 French hospitals were enrolled, 69 had Hodgkin's lymphoma (39%), and 110 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) (61%). The prevalence of HCV infection was higher in patients with NHL than in the FHDH-ANRS-CO4 [26 versus 14%, odd ratio (OR): 2.15; 95% confidence interval (1.35-3.32)] whereas there was no association between Hodgkin's lymphoma and chronic HCV infection. Chronic HBV infection was not associated with NHL in our cohort with a prevalence of 5 versus 7% in FHDH-ANRS-CO4 but tended to be associated with Hodgkin's lymphoma [prevalence of 14%, OR: 2.16 (0.98-4.27)]. Chronic HCV infection tended to pejoratively impact 2-year overall survival in patients with NHL: 72% [57%, 91%] versus 82% [74%, 91%], hazard ratio: 2.14 [0.95-4.84]. In contrast, chronic HBV infection did not correlate with outcome. CONCLUSION In the modern cART era, chronic HCV infection is associated with an increased risk of NHL in PLWHIV and tends to pejoratively impact overall survival. HBV infection is not associated with the risk of NHL but with a borderline increase of Hodgkin's lymphoma risk.

Abstract
Signals emanating from the B-cell receptor (BCR) promote proliferation and survival in diverse forms of B-cell lymphoma. Precision medicine strategies targeting the BCR pathway have been generally effective in treating lymphoma, but often fail to produce durable responses in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), a common and aggressive cancer. New insights into DLBCL biology garnered from genomic analyses and functional proteogenomic studies have identified novel modes of BCR signaling in this disease. Herein, we describe the distinct roles of antigen-dependent and antigen-independent BCR signaling in different subtypes of DLBCL. We highlight mechanisms by which the BCR cooperates with TLR9 and mutant isoforms of MYD88 to drive sustained NF-κB activity in the activated B-cell-like (ABC) subtype of DLBCL. Finally, we discuss progress in detecting and targeting oncogenic BCR signaling to improve the survival of patients with lymphoma.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are classified as oncogenic human viruses. Chronic HBV and HCV infections are associated with higher risk of haematological malignancy development. Direct and indirect oncogenic mechanisms have been demonstrated for both HBV and HCV in several studies. HCV and overt/occult HBV infections in patients with oncohaematological disease constitute an impediment and a threat during immunosuppressive chemotherapy treatment. We review the HBV and HCV oncogenic mechanisms and the impact and the safety of antiviral treatment in patients with haematological malignancies.

Abstract
The association between B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) is well demonstrated by epidemiological studies. Most studies concerning this association have been conducted in endemic areas. Thus, little is known concerning the clinical characteristics of HBV-related lymphomas in non-endemic areas. Here, we report the characteristics and outcomes of 39 patients with active HBV infection and B-cell NHL collected retrospectively in France and Italy. We also compared their characteristics with those of HCV-positive patients with NHL. The gender ratio (M/F) was 3.3 and the median age at NHL diagnosis, 59 years. The pathological distribution was 24 (62%) diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs) and 15 (38%) other lymphomas subtypes: marginal zone lymphoma (n = 6), follicular lymphoma (n = 3), mantle cell lymphoma (n = 2), Burkitt's lymphoma (n = 1), and not otherwise specified low-grade B-NHL (n = 3). Treatment included antiviral therapy for 35 patients (90%). Twenty-two (92%) DLBCL patients received an R-CHOP or R-CHOP-like regimen, leading to complete remission for 18 (75%).At one year, 21 DLBCL patients (88%) were alive, and 13 other B-cell lymphoma patients (87%) were alive. This European study underscores the predominance of DLBCL among patients with active HBV infection and their similar outcomes to non-HBV infected patients with DLBCL when treated with R-CHOP and antivirals.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a hepatotropic and a lymphotropic virus. An association between HBV and hematologic malignancies has been determined previously; however, the association between HBV infection and multiple myeloma (MM) remains controversial. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of HBV infection in patients with MM, and investigate their characteristics and prognostic significance. The clinical data of 165 patients with MM who had received at least four cycles of chemotherapy between April 2008 and February 2017 at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital (Nanjing, China) were collected. HBV markers were determined using ELISA. The rates of acute or chronic HBV infection and resolved HBV infection in patients with MM were 12.12 and 26.06%, respectively. The gain of 1q21 was significantly more prevalent in the patients who were classified as HBV-positive compared with the patients who were classified as HBV-negative (54 vs. 38.2%; P=0.048), and the level of alanine transaminase in patients who were classified as HBV-positive was significantly increased compared with the non-infected group (63.29 vs. 24.66 U/l; P=0.043). Lactate dehydrogenase, serum creatinine and serum calcium levels were additionally determined to be significant risk factors of overall survival. The progression-free survival (PFS) of patients who were classified as HBV-positive was decreased compared with patients who were classified as HBV-negative (18.97 vs. 29.67 months; P=0.006), and being HBV-positive was determined to be an independent prognostic factor of PFS. HBV infection may contribute to MM progression through 1q21 amplification, and improved monitoring of HBV markers in patients with MM may be required.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the immunity effects after vaccinating different doses and frequencies of hepatitis B vaccines by calculating the seroconversion rates of HBsAb in patients with lymphoma. Clinical data of 315 patients from January 2010 to August 2018 were analyzed. According to different doses and frequencies, the patients were divided into three groups: low-dose group, high-dose group, and high-dose and high-frequency group. The highest seroconversion rate of HBsAb was 82.3% in the high-dose and high-frequency group (p < .05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the dose and frequency of vaccination (p < .001, OR = 2.663), sex (p < .006, OR = 3.106), the Ann Arbor stage (p < .001, OR = 0.195) and whether the chemotherapy regimen contained ibrutinib or not (p < .008, OR = 8.115) are independent factors affecting the immunity effects of hepatitis B vaccine in patients with lymphoma. Increasing doses and frequencies of hepatitis B vaccination may improve the immune response in patients with lymphoma.

We identified 69,581 patients who initiated antiviral treatment in the Veterans Affairs national health care system from January 1, 1999, to December 31, 2015, including 40,410 (58%) IFN‐only regimens, 4,546 (6.5%) DAA + IFN regimens, and 24,625 (35%) DAA‐only regimens. We retrospectively followed patients to identify incident cases of hematologic malignancies or monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS), a premalignant precursor of multiple myeloma. Among patients treated with IFN, SVR was significantly associated with a reduction in the risk of lymphoma (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR], 0.70; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.51‐0.97), multiple myeloma (AHR, 0.40; 95% CI, 0.20‐0.77), MGUS (AHR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.42‐0.99), or all hematologic malignancies and MGUS combined (AHR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.53‐0.84) over a mean follow‐up of 10.6 years. In contrast, among patients treated with DAA, SVR was not associated with the risk of lymphoma, multiple myeloma, MGUS, or all hematologic malignancies and MGUS combined (AHR, 1.08; 95% CI, 0.66‐1.78) during a mean follow‐up of 2.9 years. Neither IFN‐induced SVR nor DAA‐induced SVR was associated with risk of colon cancer or prostate cancer, which were chosen a priori as comparison/control malignancies. Conclusion: We describe novel strong associations between IFN‐induced SVR and lymphoma, multiple myeloma, MGUS, and all hematologic malignancies combined. Surprisingly, these associations were not observed with DAA‐induced SVR.

Abstract
There are diverse investigations focused on the therapies of lymphoma. Our research was taken to identify the effects of lentiviral-mediated Smad4 gene silencing on chemosensitivity of human lymphoma cells to adriamycin (ADM) via transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) signaling pathway. Raji/ADM cells were cultured and infected with lentiviral particles Smad4-short hairpin (shRNA) and control-shRNA. Then, the messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein levels of TGFβ signaling pathway-related factors (Smad4, Smad3, cyclinE, cyclinD1, and p21) in Raji/ADM cells were determined. The effect of Smad4-shRNA on cell viability, invasion and migration, and apoptosis were also detected. Compared with the Raji group, increased mRNA and protein levels of Smad4, Smad3, cyclinE, cyclinD1, enhanced cell proliferation, migration and invasion as well as decreased mRNA, and protein levels of p21 and cell apoptosis rate were found in the Raji/ADM and control-shRNA groups. However, Smad4 gene silencing resulted in decreased mRNA and protein levels of Smad4, Smad3, cyclinE, and cyclinD1 along with inhibited cell proliferation, migration and invasion but increased expression of p21 together with cell apoptosis. Collectively, Smad4 gene silencing can inhibit the activation of TGFβ signaling pathway, thereby enhancing the chemosensitivity of human lymphoma cells to ADM.

Abstract
Emerging evidences indicate that hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), but the mechanisms of HBV-induction lymphomagenesis remain unclear. In this report, retrospective analysis of the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) among NHL cases demonstrated significantly higher HBsAg carrier rate among B-cell NHL cases than controls (other cancers except primary liver cancer) (adjusted odds ratio, 1.56; 95% confidence interval, 1.13–2.16). Furthermore, cells with an immortalization potential existed in the peripheral blood of 4 patients with chronic HBV infection. Characterization of these cells showed their immunophenotypes similar to that of the majority of HBsAg-positive B-cell NHL patients. Immunoglobulin (Ig) gene rearrangements confirmed the clonal Ig gene rearrangements. Cytogenetic analysis revealed abnormal karyotypes of these cells with an immortalization potential. Compared with cells with an immortalization potential that we previously found in B-cell NHL patients by the same way, these cells showed many similar features. In conclusion, cells with an immortalization potential existed in the part of patients with chronic HBV infection before lymphoma development and showed some malignant features. They may be the cellular basis of HBV-associated lymphomagenesis.

Abstract
Richter’s syndrome, the development of high-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL), may be triggered by viral infections (eg, Epstein–Barr virus infection). Herein, we report an unusual case of CD5-negative CLL/SLL patient with gastrointestinal mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) and hepatitis B virus infection. CLL/SLL was diagnosed based on lymph node immunohistochemistry and bone marrow pathology. This patient was treated with seven cycles of multi-agent chemotherapy. During treatment, the hepatitis B viruses were activated. Then, after 20 months of antiviral treatment with entecavir, he developed abdominal discomfort and abdominal lymphadenopathy and was diagnosed with MCL based on intestinal biopsy. This work indicates that the hepatitis B virus in patients with CLL/SLL may accelerate the progress or transformation to MCL.

Abstract
The association of HCV-infection with B-lymphomas is supported by the regression of most indolent/low-grade lymphomas following anti-viral therapy. Studies on direct and indirect oncogenic mechanisms have elucidated the pathogenesis of HCV-associated B-lymphoma subtypes. These include B-lymphocyte proliferation and sustained clonal expansion by HCV-envelope protein stimulation of B-cell receptors, and prolonged HCV-infected B-cell growth by overexpression of an anti-apoptotic BCL-2 oncogene caused by the increased frequency of t(14;18) chromosomal translocations in follicular lymphomas. HCV has been implicated in lymphomagenesis by a "hit-and-run" mechanism, inducing enhanced mutation rate in immunoglobulins and anti-oncogenes favoring immune escape, due to permanent genetic damage by double-strand DNA-breaks. More direct oncogenic mechanisms have been identified in cytokines and chemokines in relation to NS3 and Core expression, particularly in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. By reviewing genetic alterations and disrupted signaling pathways, we intend to highlight how mutually non-contrasting mechanisms cooperate with environmental factors toward progression of HCV-lymphoma.

Abstract
Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the major causes of death worldwide due to infectious agents. The advent of direct-acting antivirals has dramatically improved the chance of HCV elimination, even for patients with decompensated cirrhosis. Along with HCV cure, benefits are recognized in terms of regression of liver fibrosis and risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. Furthermore, beyond hepatic outcomes, several extrahepatic benefits may result from sustained HCV eradication, including improvements in the neurocognitive function and reduced cardiovascular disease risk. Finally, there is no doubt that the individual success of direct-acting antivirals is largely contributing to halt HCV transmission globally, in the absence of an effective HCV prophylactic vaccine.

Abstract
The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a single-stranded RNA virus which is thought to be involved in the onset of B cell lymphoma. HCV-positive diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has been reported to clinically manifest in extranodal lesions (e.g., in the liver, spleen, and stomach). Here, we investigated HCV-positive and -negative primary splenic DLBCL (p-spDLBCL) and non-primary splenic DLBCL (ordinary DLBCL). Furthermore, to examine HCV lymphomagenesis, RNA in situ hybridization (ISH), RT-PCR (reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction), and NS3 immunostaining of HCV viral nonstructural proteins were performed. HCV-positive p-spDLBCL patients presented fewer B symptoms (asymptomatic) and better performance status, with elevated presence of splenic macronodular lesions and more germinal center B cell (GCB) sub-group cases than HCV-negative p-spDLBCL patients. However, HCV-positive ordinary DLBCL patients were found to have more non-GCB sub-group cases than HCV-negative ordinary DLBCL patients. HCV-positive DLBCL patients showed 20.6% (7/34) NS3 positivity, 16.7% (1/6) HCV-RNA in situ positivity, and 22.2% (2/9) detection of HCV-RNA in tumor tissue by RT-PCR. Splenic samples were found to have a higher frequency of HCV detection than lymph node samples, thus suggesting that HCV may be closely related to lymphomagenesis, especially in splenic lymphoma.

Abstract
Hepatitis B reactivation is the reappearance or rise of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in patients with past or chronic HBV infection, usually occurring in the context of immunosuppression. HBV reactivation has been most commonly reported in patients with hematologic disorders, with potentially serious and life-threatening consequences. In this review, we discuss the basis and presentation of HBV reactivation, and risk factors in terms of the host, the virus and the immunosuppression regimen, including newer agents used to manage hematologic malignancies. We overview the management of HBV reactivation, highlighting an up-dated recommendation on the use of newer nucleoside and nucleotide analogs, such as tenofovir and entecavir, for antiviral prophylaxis.

Abstract
Hepatitis B and C virus (HBV and HCV) reactivations have become more common following the intensive use of biological therapies for the treatment of chronic lymphoproliferative disorders (CLD). We evaluate risk factors for virus reactivation and exitus in patients diagnosed with CLD and HBV or HCV infection, undergoing rituximab-chemotherapy (R-chemo). A prospective, observational study in two tertiary-care Romanian hospitals, between December 2007 and May 2010, of patients diagnosed with CLD undergoing R-chemo. HBV and HCV serological markers, viral load, fibrosis and necroinflammation were assessed at baseline and every 3-6 months. We screened 502 patients diagnosed with CLDs (77.2% non-Hodgkin lymphomas) and enrolled 57 patients with HBV and/or HCV infection with a mean age of 61.35 ± 11.1 years. The replicative virus was HBV in 23 patients (40.3%), HCV in 33 patients (57.9%). HCV reactivation rate (15.6%) was lower than for HBV (45.5%) (p = 0.02). In univariate analysis, viral reactivation was associated with aggressive CLD (p = 0.01), HBV (p = 0.01) and lymphopenia (p = 0.02). Death was associated with aggressive CLD (p = 0.01), viral reactivation (p = 0.001) and high baseline viremia (p = 0.05). In multivariate analysis, viral reactivation was associated with lymphopenia (OR 0.05, 95% CI 0.003-0.85, p = 0.03). Risk of death was 10 times higher for patients with viral reactivation (95% CI 1.54-65.5, p = 0.01). A quarter of the infected patients were diagnosed with viral reactivation. While hepatitis C was more prevalent than hepatitis B in patients with CLD, viral reactivation was found 3 times more frequently in patients with hepatitis B than C.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the clinical and prognostic significance of hepatitis B virus infection on patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed in 81 relapsed/refractory DLBCL cases who were treated with salvage regimens from January 2004 to November 2016. The patients were divided into two group, HBsAg positive and HBsAg negative group, and assessed the clinical features and survival time of two groups. Results: Twenty-four (29.6%) patients were HBsAg positive and 57(70.4%) were negative. HBsAg-positive DLBCL patients showed unique clinical features, including more younger patients (P=0.005), more advanced Ann Arbor stage (P<0.001), high-risk IPI (P=0.010), more hypohemoglobin (P=0.015), especially extra-nodal involvement (P=0.038) and recurrence (P=0.002). Overall response rate (29.2% vs 68.4%, χ(2)=10.720, P=0.001) and median overall survival time [(11.3±2.9) months vs (30.0±7.6) months, χ(2)=28.175, P<0.001] were inferior in HBsAg-positive patients, respectively. Conclusion: To strictly control HBV infection plays an important role on the survival and prognosis of relapsed/refractory lymphoma patients.
