Abstract
Iron deficiency is prevalent among pregnant women because of the increased maternal iron requirements. Uncorrected maternal iron deficiency can lead to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess serum ferritin concentration and prevalence of iron deficiency among pregnant women in Jiangsu, China. Within a cohort study, pregnant women were followed up from 2nd trimester of pregnancy until their labour. They were assessed for iron status in 2nd and 3rd trimesters using serum ferritin. In addition, neonatal APGAR score and birth weight were assessed in order to determine if maternal iron deficiency was associated with these neonatal outcomes. A total of 1688 pregnant women were followed up until their labour. The mean age of participants was 29 ± 4 years and 54.0% of them were multigravidas. Mean serum ferritin concentration in 2nd trimester was significantly higher than 3rd trimester (59.9 vs. 22.2 ng/mL) (P < 0.001). The prevalence of iron deficiency using serum ferritin concentration cut-off of < 15 ng/mL in 2nd and 3rd trimesters was 11.9% and 37.4%, respectively (P < 0.05). Maternal iron deficiency as assessed by serum ferritin concentration in 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy was not associated with neonatal outcomes (all P > 0.05). Our study reported that increased prevalence of maternal iron deficiency in 3rd trimester, suggesting that screening and supplementation of at-risk pregnancies can be used as a preventive strategy to tackle the issue. Consideration should be given to ensure adequate maternal iron status through pregnancy.

Abstract
The systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to ascertain the prevalence of anemia, iron deficiency (ID), and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) among Chinese pregnant women. A total of 722 articles on maternal anemia during pregnancy published between January 2010 and December 2020 were compiled, and a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on 57 eligible studies including 1,376,204 pregnant women to ascertain the prevalence of anemia and the prevalence in different subgroups. The results showed that the prevalence of anemia, ID, and IDA among pregnant women in China were 30.7% (95% CI: 26.6%, 34.7%), 45.6% (95% CI: 37.0%, 54.2%), and 17.3% (95% CI: 13.9%, 20.7%), respectively. All prevalence increased with the progression of the pregnancy. There were sizable regional variations in the prevalence of anemia, ID, and IDA. Generally, lower prevalence was observed in the economically more advanced eastern region of the country, while the prevalence of ID was higher in the eastern region than that in the western region. The prevalence of anemia and IDA in rural areas was higher than that in urban areas, but ID prevalence was higher in urban areas. In conclusion, the regional differences and urban-rural disparities in the prevalence of anemia indicate the need for more context-specific interventions to prevent and treat anemia. It was found that dietary factors were one of the major causes of anemia, and iron-containing supplements and nutrition counseling could be effective interventions to reduce the prevalence of anemia, ID, and IDA among Chinese pregnant women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most previous research on the environmental epidemiology of childhood atopic eczema, rhinitis and wheeze is limited in the scope of risk factors studied. Our study adopted a machine learning approach to explore the role of the exposome starting already in the preconception phase. METHODS We performed a combined analysis of two multi-ethnic Asian birth cohorts, the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) and the Singapore PREconception Study of long Term maternal and child Outcomes (S-PRESTO) cohorts. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect information on demography, lifestyle and childhood atopic eczema, rhinitis and wheeze development. Data training was performed using XGBoost, genetic algorithm and logistic regression models, and the top variables with the highest importance were identified. Additive explanation values were identified and inputted into a final multiple logistic regression model. Generalised structural equation modelling with maternal and child blood micronutrients, metabolites and cytokines was performed to explain possible mechanisms. RESULTS The final study population included 1151 mother-child pairs. Our findings suggest that these childhood diseases are likely programmed in utero by the preconception and pregnancy exposomes through inflammatory pathways. We identified preconception alcohol consumption and maternal depressive symptoms during pregnancy as key modifiable maternal environmental exposures that increased eczema and rhinitis risk. Our mechanistic model suggested that higher maternal blood neopterin and child blood dimethylglycine protected against early childhood wheeze. After birth, early infection was a key driver of atopic eczema and rhinitis development. CONCLUSION Preconception and antenatal exposomes can programme atopic eczema, rhinitis and wheeze development in utero. Reducing maternal alcohol consumption during preconception and supporting maternal mental health during pregnancy may prevent atopic eczema and rhinitis by promoting an optimal antenatal environment. Our findings suggest a need to include preconception environmental exposures in future research to counter the earliest precursors of disease development in children.

Abstract
Introduction Iron deficiency anemia is associated with an increased risk of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Intravenous iron preparation containing ferric carboxymaltose has been shown to be a safe and effective way of increasing hemoglobin (Hb) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) levels and reducing the need for blood transfusion. In our center, it used to be given as an inpatient procedure because of the risks of potential drug reactions. In 2021, we initiated the administration of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose as an outpatient procedure. We compared the outcomes of patients between 2021 and 2023 after the initiation of outpatient administration of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose in 127 obstetric patients with iron deficiency anemia in the second and third trimesters. Methods In this study conducted in a large maternity unit in Singapore between 2021 to 2023, we compared the changes in maternal hematological parameters among obstetric patients with iron deficiency anemia presenting to the day care unit in the second or third trimester with a Hb level of <8 g/dl treated with a single dose of ferric carboxymaltose injection (Ferinject) against a control group who were referred for treatment but defaulted on and declined treatment. Results Ferric carboxymaltose significantly increased the Hb and MCV levels at delivery in obstetric patients with iron deficiency. The mean Hb at delivery was 10.8 g/dL in the case group compared to 8.8 g/dL in the control group. The percentage of patients with Hb ≥10.0 g/dL was 73.4% in the case group compared to 27.8% in the control group. The incidence of adverse side effects was low and mild (2/127; 1.6%). None of the patients received were hospitalized because of ferric carboxymaltose. Conclusion A single injection dose of ferric carboxymaltose as an outpatient antenatal procedure was easily administered and well tolerated. Obstetric patients with iron deficiency anemia who received intravenous ferric carboxymaltose had a significantly higher level of Hb than those who did not.

Abstract
Background and aims Maternal malnutrition is a major global public health problem that can lead to serious maternal diseases. This study aimed to analyze and predict the spatio-temporal trends in the burden of maternal disorders attributable to malnutrition, and to provide a basis for scientific improvement of maternal malnutrition and targeted prevention of maternal disorders. Methods Data on maternal disorders attributable to malnutrition, including number of deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), population attributable fractions (PAFs), age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs), and age-standardized DALY rates (ASDRs) were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 to describe their epidemiological characteristics by age, region, year, and type of disease. A log-linear regression model was used to calculate the annual percentage change (AAPC) of ASMR or ASDR to reflect their temporal trends. Bayesian age-period-cohort model was used to predict the number of deaths and mortality rates to 2035. Results Global number of deaths and DALYs for maternal disorders attributable to malnutrition declined by 42.35 and 41.61% from 1990 to 2019, with an AAPC of -3.09 (95% CI: -3.31, -2.88) and -2.98 (95% CI: -3.20, -2.77) for ASMR and ASDR, respectively. The burden was higher among younger pregnant women (20-29 years) in low and low-middle socio-demographic index (SDI) regions, whereas it was higher among older pregnant women (30-39 years) in high SDI region. Both ASMR and ASDR showed a significant decreasing trend with increasing SDI. Maternal hemorrhage had the highest burden of all diseases. Global deaths are predicted to decline from 42,350 in 2019 to 38,461 in 2035, with the ASMR declining from 1.08 (95% UI: 0.38, 1.79) to 0.89 (95% UI: 0.47, 1.31). Conclusion Maternal malnutrition is improving globally, but in the context of the global food crisis, attention needs to be paid to malnutrition in low SDI regions, especially among young pregnant women, and corresponding measures need to be taken to effectively reduce the burden of disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over one-third of women worldwide suffer from anaemia. The prevalence of anaemia is particularly pronounced among women of reproductive age (WRA) in developing countries, such as India. No prior study has ever exclusively studied the prevalence of anaemia across the Aspirational Districts of India. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of anaemia across Aspirational Districts of India and to identify the determinants of anaemia among WRA in these districts. METHODS From the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-4 (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21), data on 114,444 and 108,782 women aged 15-49 from Aspirational Districts were analyzed in our study, respectively. Bivariate statistics and multivariable binary logistic regression were used to identify the determinants of anaemia. RESULTS The national prevalence of anaemia among WRA has increased from 53% in NFHS-4 to 57% in NFHS-5 whereas anaemia among WRA in Aspirational Districts has increased from 58.7% in NFHS-4 to 61.1% in NFHS-5. Between 2015 and 2021, over 60% of Aspirational Districts experienced an increase in the prevalence of anaemia and one-fourth, specifically 29 out of 112, observed a rise by at least 10 percentage points (pp). Notably, there are significant variations in anaemia prevalence among districts, with Simdega and Udalgiri having the highest anaemia prevalence in NFHS-4 and NFHS-5 at 78.2% and 81.5%, respectively. During this period, Barpeta followed by Udalgiri of Assam have witnessed the maximum increase with 29.4% and 26.7% respectively. Moreover, pooled regression results show women with three to four children [AOR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.08-1.17], women who breastfeed [AOR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.13-1.20], Scheduled Tribe women [AOR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.35-1.44], poorest women [AOR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.22-1.33] and women those who consume fish occasionally [AOR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.12-1.17] were more likely to be anaemic. CONCLUSION The significant increase in anaemia among WRA in Aspirational Districts of India is a matter of concern. Given the rise in anaemia among WRA, determinants-based and district-specific measures must be designed and implemented to reduce the prevalence of anaemia among Aspirational Districts of India.

Abstract
Objectives Fructosamine correlates well with glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in Caucasians. This study investigates this correlation and whether fructosamine can reliably estimate glycated haemoglobin in Southeast Asians. Methods We recruited 193 participants based on 4 HbA1c bands (<6.0%; 6.0 - 7.9%; 8.0- 9.9%; ≥10%) from a secondary hospital in Singapore between August 2017 and December 2021. Blood samples for fructosamine, glycated haemoglobin, albumin, haemoglobin, thyroid stimulating hormone and creatinine were drawn in a single setting for all participants. Scatter plot was used to explore correlation between fructosamine and glycated haemoglobin. Strength of linear correlation was reported using Pearson's correlation coefficient. Simple linear regression was used to examine the relationship between fructosamine and glycated haemoglobin. Results We performed simple linear regression to study the relationship between fructosamine and HbA1c in the research participants (R2 = 0.756, p<0.01). Further analysis with natural logarithmic transformation of fructosamine demonstrated a stronger correlation between HbA1c and fructosamine (R2 = 0.792, p<0.01). Conclusions Fructosamine is reliably correlated with HbA1c for the monitoring of glycaemic control in Southeast Asians.

Abstract
Background Pregnancy anaemia is a significant public health concern in South Africa (SA), particularly in rural areas, but little is known about its prevalence and risk factors in rural areas. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence and identify risk factors of pregnancy anaemia in the public health facilities of Limpopo Province (LP), SA. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among a consecutive sample of 211 pregnant women attending antenatal care at Seshego Hospital and its feeder health centre (May to June 2019). Anaemia was defined as haemoglobin (Hb) <11 g/dL and classified as mild (10-10.9 g/dL), moderate (7-9.9 g/dL) and severe anaemia (<7 g/dL). A multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of anaemia. Results The mean age of the women was 28.4 ± 5.7 years (range from 18 to 41 years). Over half (52%) had secondary education, 65% were unmarried, 72% were unemployed, 34% were nulliparous, 15% were human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected and 67% were in the third trimester. The anaemia prevalence was 18.0% and was significantly associated with parity, HIV status and body mass index (BMI) in a multivariate logistic regression analysis. Conclusion This study found that less than one-third of pregnant women were affected by anaemia, associated with parity, HIV infected and BMI. It is essential to promote routine screening for anaemia, health education and prompt treatment of infections to reduce this burden. In addition, further studies on risk factors for anaemia during pregnancy in both urban and rural communities should be conducted to strengthen these findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the impact of dietary and underlying factors on the iron status of women in early pregnancy and to provide evidence for preventing iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia, thereby reducing the incidence of associated adverse outcomes. METHODS From November to December 2018, women in the first trimester of pregnancy (< 12 weeks gestation) who established prenatal records at the Shunyi District Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Beijing, were enrolled in this study, in which 388 participants were accessed for data including demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, parity, biomarkers reflecting iron status, and food-frequency questionnaire. SPSS 26.0 were used for statistical analysis. Dietary patterns were extracted using principal component analysis, and factor scores of each dietary pattern were calculated. Two-sided Fisher exact probability test and one-way ANOVA were conducted to access differences in iron status among the groups, and the differences were significant if P < 0.05. Iron deficiency was defined as serum ferritin(SF) < 30 μg/L. To analyze the potential role of dietary factors on iron deficiency during the first trimester, the collected data listed above were adopted as independent factors for the cross-sectional Logistic regression. We used Logistic regression to analyze the potential effects of baseline characteristics and dietary factors on iron status. RESULTS Among the 388 participants included in the analysis, 121 (32.2%) were iron deficient, in which 107 (27.6%) were iron depletion (ID), 8 (2.1%) were iron deficiency erythropoiesis (IDA), 6(1.5%) were iron deficiency anemia. The mean SF concentration was (50.4±35.3) μg/L. Multiparity(OR=3.9, 95%CI: 1.81-8.42, P=0.001)was a risk factor for iron deficiency during early pregnancy. No significant iron status differences were found among the participants with different educational levels and anthropometric measurements. In contrast, age (OR =0.96, 95%CI: 0.94-0.97, P < 0.001) was a protective factor. For multiparas, taking iron-containing supplements might have a protective effect for iron deficiency (OR=0.27, 95%CI: 0.09-0.83, P=0.022). The balance-diet pattern (OR=0.81, 95%CI: 0.66-1.00, P=0.054) only showed a marginally significant effect. CONCLUSION Increasing attention should be paid to the iron status of pregnant multiparas and young pregnant women. For those women of reproductive age with the risk factors listed above, especially for multiparas, iron-containing supplements should be recommended to prevent gestational iron deficiency. The effect of the "balance" dietary pattern on iron status in the first trimester and following requires further research and discussion.

Abstract
Maternal nutrition is an important forecaster of infant's and mother's health status in most developing countries. This study aimed at assessing the prevalence and associated risk factors of iron, vitamin B12, and folate deficiencies among pregnant women in Mbeya Tanzania. A cross-sectional study using a cluster randomized sampling was conducted among 420 pregnant women. A structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic and dietary assessment. Body iron store was assessed using serum ferritin measured by immunoturbidimetric assays using a Roche Cobas 400+ biochemistry analyzer. Serum folate was measured by folate microbiological assay, while serum vitamin B12 was measured by immunochemiluminescence assay using a Roche Cobas e411 immunoassay analyzer. Multivariate analysis was performed using Poisson regression. The prevalence of iron, folate, and vitamin B12 deficiencies among pregnant women in Mbeya was 37.8%, 24.0%, and 9.7% respectively. Higher odds of iron deficiency were seen in pregnant women aged 20-24 years older [Adjusted OR = 1.20 (95%CI 1.03, 1.35)], not employed [Adjusted OR = 3.0(95%CI 1.03-1.77)] and, not received iron/folic acid supplementation [Adjusted OR = 1.11 (95%CI 1.003-1.23)]. Pregnant women with highest and middle socio-economic statuses had lower odds of vitamin B12 deficiency [Adjusted OR = 0.83 (95%CI 0.76-0.92)] and [Adjusted OR = 0.89 (95%CI 0.81-0.98)] respectively. Pregnant women who were not employed, not received iron and folic acid supplement during pregnancy and, not consumed edible vegetable cooking oil had significant higher odds of serum folate deficiency [Adjusted OR = 3.0 (95%CI 1.58-5.68)], [Adjusted OR = 1.53 (95%CI 1.21-1.93)] and, [Adjusted OR = 2.77 (1.03-7.44)] respectively. This study confirms that iron, folate and vitamin B12 deficiencies are still a major challenge among pregnant women in Tanzania. We recommend for public health interventions for the provision of vitamin B12 along with iron and folic acid supplementations, especially in pregnant women belong to low socio-economic status and limited knowledge of healthy diet.

Abstract
This study estimates the effect of length of schooling on anemia and nutritional status and evaluates the cost-effectiveness of primary schooling as an anemia intervention for women of childbearing age in Ethiopia. In 1994-1995, Ethiopia abolished primary school tuition fees and embarked on a large-scale educational investment program, which increased primary school enrollment and retention. An instrumented regression-discontinuity design was used to examine the effect on anemia risk and body mass index (BMI) of an increase in length of schooling resulting from the reforms, as a natural experiment. Anemia and BMI biomarkers and demographic data for 13,984 women were obtained from the 2011 and 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys, with the 2019 Mini Demographic and Health Survey used for robustness checks. Results indicate that each additional year of schooling reduced anemia risk by 3 percentage points (9.2%-11.2% reduction) and increased BMI (weight (kg)/height (m)2) by 0.26-0.42. Primary education was cost-effective-based on World Health Organization cost-effectiveness thresholds-as an anemia intervention, with a cost per anemia case averted of US$1,654. The findings suggest that investment in education reduces anemia risk later in life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the high burden of anemia among pregnant women in low-resource settings like Ethiopia is well documented, evidence is scarce on the underlying causes using biochemical tests. Therefore, this study assessed the iron status and factors associated with iron deficiency (ID) using serum ferritin concentration among pregnant women in Haramaya district, eastern Ethiopia. METHODS A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected pregnant women in Haramaya district, eastern Ethiopia. The serum ferritin (SF) concentration was measured in the National Biochemical Laboratory of Ethiopia on a fully automated Cobas e411 (German, Japan Cobas 4000 analyzer series) immunoassay analyzer using the electro-chemiluminescence (ECL) method and standard procedures. A log-binomial regression analysis identified variables associated with iron deficiency, and defined as serum ferritin concentration < 15 μg/L (per the World Health Organization recommendation in developing countries). An adjusted risk ratio (aRR), and a 95% confidence interval (CI), were used to report associations. Finally, the p-value < 0.05 was the cut-off point for the significant association. RESULTS A total of 446 pregnant women with a mean age of 24.78 (+ 5.20) were included in the study. A total of 236 (52.91%; 95% CI: 48.16-57.63) had iron deficiency. The overall prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was 45.96% (95% CI: 41.32-50.71) and 28.03% (95% CI: 21.27-32.44), respectively. The risk of iron deficiency was more likely among women with low dietary diversity (aRR = 1.36; 95% CI = 1.07-1.72) and those who skipped meals (aRR = 1.29; 95% CI = 1.05-1.57), but less among women who had antenatal care (aRR = 0.73 (95% CI = 0.61-0.88). CONCLUSION More than half of the pregnant women in eastern Ethiopia had iron deficiency. Improving dietary diversity, meal frequency, and prenatal follow-up is essential to improve the high burden of ID and the adverse effect on pregnant women and the fetus. Moreover, a prospective study comparing maternal and perinatal outcomes among these spectra-iron depletion, ID, and IDA-is crucial for understanding their impact on maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity.

Abstract
Background Anemia is a global public health problem that affects pregnant women. The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency which is extremely common in developing countries. World health organization reported that 36.5% of pregnant women are anemic globally. In Ethiopia, 27.08% of women of the reproductive age group are anemic. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the magnitude and factors associated with iron supplementation during pregnancy in the southern and eastern regions of Ethiopia. Methods The data used in this analysis were extracted from Mini Demographic and Health Survey 2019. The survey was conducted in 9 regional states and two city administrations. The data used in the analysis were extracted from individual women datasets, and 1780 study participants were included in this study. The logistic regression analysis including bivariate and multivariable logistic regression at a 95% confidence interval and a p-value less than 0.05 was used. Result The finding of the study shows that iron supplementation during pregnancy in Southern and Eastern parts of Ethiopia was 50.06%. Among those who received iron, only about 20% took it for 90 days and more during their pregnancy. Iron supplementation among the pregnant women was affected by secondary education [AOR = 2.20, 95%CI (1.325, 3.638)], residing in urban [AOR = 1.75, 95%CI (1.192, 2.574)], having media at home [AOR = 1.41, 95%CI (1.022, 1.946)], having antenatal care follow up [AOR = 9.27, 95%CI (4.727, 18.169)], having 4 and more ANC follow up [AOR = 2.01, 95%CI (1.468,2.760], having antenatal care follow up at government health institutions [AOR = 3.40, 95%CI (1.934, 5.982)], and giving birth at governmental health institutions [AOR = 1.70, 95%CI (1.236, 2.336)]. Conclusion Only one in two pregnant women was supplemented with iron during their recent pregnancy. The supplementation was affected by women's education, place of residence, presence of media at home, antenatal care follow-up, the number of antenatal care follow up, antenatal care follows up at governmental health institutions, and giving birth at the governmental health institution. The availability and accessibility of maternal care services and their functionality in providing maternal care services improve the supplementation.

Abstract
Introduction Red cell transfusion is expensive and not without risks. Despite the availability of transfusion guidelines, studies report a wide interhospital variation in transfusion rates. This retrospective cohort study was conducted to define the incidence of red cell transfusion in a multi-ethnic obstetric population and to evaluate current transfusion practice with regard to indications and appropriateness. Methods All parturients who delivered a live or stillbirth in the period 2014-2015 and who received allogeneic blood transfusion during pregnancy and up to six weeks postnatally were identified. Their medical records were reviewed to extract the relevant demographic, obstetric and transfusion data. Descriptive analysis of data was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics software. Results Out of 23,456 parturients who delivered in the study period, 760 were administered red cell transfusion, resulting in a transfusion rate of 3.2% or 32 in 1,000 maternities. A total of 1,675 red cell units were utilised in 863 transfusion episodes. Major indications for transfusion were anaemia in pregnancy (49.2%) and postpartum haemorrhage secondary to an atonic uterus. Transfusion was more frequently associated with caesarean than vaginal births (4.9% vs. 2.4%). About 14% of transfusions were initiated with pre-transfusion haemoglobin (Hb) ≥ 8.0 g/dL, whereas 37% of transfusions resulted in post-transfusion Hb > 9.0 g/dL. Conclusion The incidence of red cell transfusion was 3.2% in a multiethnic obstetric population. Patient blood management strategies should focus on optimising antenatal anaemia, reducing blood loss during delivery and eliminating inappropriate transfusion.

Abstract
We studied ethnic differences in terms of iron status during pregnancy between Dutch women and other ethnicities and explore to what extent these differences can be explained by environmental factors. This cross-sectional population-based study (2002-2006) was embedded in the Generation R study and included a total of 4737 pregnant women from seven ethnic groups (Dutch, Turkish, Moroccan, Cape Verdean, Surinamese-Hindustani, Surinamese-Creole and Antillean). Ethnicity was defined according to the Dutch classification of ethnic background. Ferritin, iron and transferrin were measured in early pregnancy. The overall prevalence of iron deficiency was 7 %, ranging from 4 % in both Dutch and Surinamese-Creoles, to 18 % in Turkish, Moroccan and Surinamese-Hindustani women. Iron overload was most prevalent in Surinamese-Creole (11 %) and Dutch (9 %) women. Socioeconomic factors accounted for 5-36 % of the differences. Income was the strongest socioeconomic factor in the Cape Verdean and Surinamese-Hindustani groups and parity for the Turkish and Moroccan groups. Lifestyle determinants accounted for 8-14 % of the differences. In all groups, the strongest lifestyle factor was folic acid use, being associated with higher iron status. In conclusion, in our population, both iron deficiency and iron overload were common in early pregnancy. Our data suggest that ethnic differences in terms of socioeconomic and lifestyle factors only partly drive the large ethnic differences in iron status. Our data support the development of more specific prevention programmes based on further exploration of socioeconomic inequities, modifiable risk and genetic factors in specific ethnic subgroups, as well as the need for individual screening of iron status before supplementation.

Abstract
Anemia is a very common occurrence during pregnancy, with important variations during each trimester. Anemia was also considered as a risk factor for severity and negative outcomes in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. As the COVID-19 pandemic poses a significant threat for pregnant women in terms of infection risk and access to care, we developed a study to determine the impact of nutritional supplementation for iron deficiency anemia in correlation with the status of SARS-CoV-2 infection. In a case-control design, we identified 446 pregnancies that matched our inclusion criteria from the hospital database. The cases and controls were stratified by SARS-CoV-2 infection history to observe the association between exposure and outcomes in both the mother and the newborn. A total of 95 pregnant women were diagnosed with COVID-19, having a significantly higher proportion of iron deficiency anemia. Low birth weight, prematurity, and lower APGAR scores were statistically more often occurring in the COVID-19 group. Birth weight showed a wide variation by nutritional supplementation during pregnancy. A daily combination of iron and folate was the optimal choice to normalize the weight at birth. The complete blood count and laboratory studies for iron deficiency showed significantly decreased levels in association with SARS-CoV-2 exposure. Puerperal infection, emergency c-section, and small for gestational age were strongly associated with anemia in patients with COVID-19. It is imperative to screen for iron and folate deficiency in pregnancies at risk for complications, and it is recommended to supplement the nutritional intake of these two to promote the normal development and growth of the newborn and avoid multiple complications during pregnancy in the COVID-19 pandemic setting.

Abstract
Optimal micronutrient status is critical to the health of women, particularly during their reproductive years. A woman’s health and nutritional status during the preconception stage thus has significant implications for pregnancy outcomes and her offspring’s health later in life. In this review, we evaluated micronutrient intakes and status (iron, folate, and vitamin B12) of women in their reproductive years and during pregnancy, along with associated health consequences and dietary causes, across seven regions in Asia, namely, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. A structured literature search, targeting peer-reviewed publication databases, as well as data from international and national sources in the public domain, was conducted. Our review of the nutritional landscape demonstrates that micronutrient deficiency–related conditions, especially anemia and its associated health consequences, are common among Asian women of reproductive age, yet the dietary causes are poorly studied. Inadequate or borderline dietary intake of micronutrients and low consumption of micronutrient supplements were evident, despite existing recommendations, food fortification, and supplementation strategies. Evaluation of current programs through nutrition monitoring and improvement of supplementation strategies, such as supplementing with multiple micronutrients, alongside food-based programs, will help better support the health of women through their reproductive years.
