Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of e-cigarette among Korean adolescents is spreading with alarming rapidity, but it has not been studied along with the severity level of GAD-7. This study aims to identify adolescents' e-cigarette use and its associated factors among four different anxiety groups using the problem behavioral theory (PBT). METHODS A cross-sectional secondary dataset was retrieved from the 2020 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Of the total sample of 54,948, four anxiety groups were formed: minimal (score 0-4; n = 36,711), mild (score 5-9; n = 12,138), moderate (score 10-14; n = 4143), and severe (score above 15; n = 1965). A total of 11 variables were selected based on the PBT domains. Descriptive analysis, Chi-square, ANOVA, univariate analysis, and multiple linear regression analysis were performed. RESULTS E-cigarette use was the highest in the order of severe, mild, moderate, and minimal. While cigarette use was associated with vaping in all anxiety groups, adolescents with minimal or mild anxiety levels were more likely to be influenced by tobacco accessibility and other behavior system factors such as sexual intercourse, alcohol use, and smartphone addiction. Meanwhile, secondhand smoke exposure in public areas was only associated with those with severe anxiety levels, and secondhand smoke exposure at school was a significant factor in all anxiety groups except for those with moderate anxiety levels. LIMITATION Due to the nature of cross-sectional dataset, the study could not draw causal links between vaping and other identified factors, include all the necessary PBT components. CONCLUSION These findings underscore the need to consider different levels of anxiety when addressing the problems related to vaping among Korean adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Test the hypothesis that smoking, fast-food consumption, and binge drinking were negatively associated with academic performance in Canadian undergraduate students. PARTICIPANTS Undergraduate students across Canada [n = 411 (335♀) aged: 22 ± 4 years] completed a questionnaire regarding their lifestyle behaviors and academic grades. METHODS Relationships between lifestyle behaviors and academic performance were assessed via covariate-adjusted multiple regressions. Mediation models were used to test whether significant relationships between smoking/fast-food and grades were explained by binge drinking. RESULTS Smoking (β= -4.00, p < .001) and binge drinking (β= -1.98, p = .002) were independent predictors of grades (average: 84 ± 8%). Binge drinking partially mediated the relationships between smoking (indirect effect β= -1.19, 95%CI [-2.49, -0.08] and fast-food consumption (indirect effect: β= -.75, 95%CI [-1.20, -0.29]), with grades. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the negative influence of binge drinking, smoking, and fast-food consumption on academic success, with binge drinking as a partial mediator of these relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex and gender have increasingly been recognized as significant risk factors for many diseases, including dermatological conditions. Historically, sex and gender have often been grouped together as a single risk factor in the scientific literature. However, both may have a distinct impact on disease incidence, prevalence, clinical presentation, severity, therapeutic response, and associated psychological distress. OBJECTIVES AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION The mechanisms that underlie differences in skin diseases between males, females, men, and women remain largely unknown. The specific objectives of this review paper are:To highlight the biological differences between males and females (sex), as well as the sociocultural differences between men and women (gender) and how they impact the integumentary system.To perform a literature review to identify important sex- and gender-related epidemiological and clinical differences for various skin conditions belonging to a range of disease categories and to discuss possible biological and sociocultural factors that could explain the observed differences.To discuss dermatological skin conditions and gender-affirming treatments within the transgender community, a population of individuals who have a gender identity which is different than the gender identity they were assigned at birth. FUTURE IMPACT With the rising number of individuals that identify as non-binary or transgender within our increasingly diverse communities, it is imperative to recognize gender identity, gender, and sex as distinct entities. By doing so, clinicians will be able to better risk-stratify their patients and select treatments that are most aligned with their values. To our knowledge, very few studies have separated sex and gender as two distinct risk factors within the dermatology literature. Our article also has the potential to help guide future prevention strategies that are patient-tailored rather than using a universal approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), such as the JUUL system, are nicotine products for adults who currently smoke cigarettes but are looking for an alternative to combustible cigarettes. Sales of ENDS products were legislatively acknowledged and authorized federally in Canada with the Royal Assent of the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act in 2018. METHODS With the unique dataset from a major chain retailer in Canada, we evaluated the impacts of JUUL market entry on cigarette sales across Canada from January 2017 to August 2019 using two-way fixed effects panel regression models by leveraging on the entry time variation at the city level. We conducted various robustness checks and a permutation test to validate our results. RESULTS Our estimates suggested that JUUL market entry was, on average, significantly correlated with a 1.65% per-month decrease in cigarette sales during the initial months, and with a potentially larger impact on urban areas. Our results were robust across various specifications and tests. These findings implied that JUUL and combustible cigarettes act as economic substitutes during the study time period in Canada. CONCLUSIONS These results suggested that local availability of ENDS products, such as JUUL, has the potential to reduce local cigarette consumption.

Abstract
Background
The purpose of this systematic review study was to determine the national, regional, and global prevalence of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) vaping.
Method
The articles were searched in July 2020 without a time limit in Web of Science (ISI), Scopus, PubMed, and Ovid-MEDLINE. At first, the titles and abstracts of the articles were reviewed, and if they were appropriate, they entered the second stage of screening. In the second stage, the whole articles were reviewed and articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected. In this study, search, selection of studies, qualitative evaluation, and data extraction were performed by two authors independently, and any disagreement between the two authors was reviewed and corrected by a third author.
Results
In this study, the lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping globally were 23% and 11%, respectively. Lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in women were 16% and 8%, respectively. Also, lifetime and current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in men were 22% and 12%, respectively. In this study, the current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in who had lifetime smoked conventional cigarette was 39%, and in current smokers was 43%. The lifetime prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in the Continents of America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania were 24%, 26%, 16%, and 25%, respectively. The current prevalence of e-cigarettes vaping in the Continents of America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania were 10%, 14%, 11%, and 6%, respectively.
Conclusions
Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the popularity of e-cigarettes is increasing globally. Therefore, it is necessary for countries to have more control over the consumption and distribution of e-cigarettes, as well as to formulate the laws prohibiting about the e-cigarettes vaping in public places. There is also a need to design and conduct information campaigns to increase community awareness about e-cigarettes vaping.

Risk Behaviors, Family Support, and Emotional Health among Adolescents during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Israel. Abstract
We investigated the prevalence of risk behaviors among Israeli adolescents (tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, drug use) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Associations between different risk behaviors were examined and so was whether specific characteristics could predict risk behaviors in adolescents. The study consisted of 1020 Israeli adolescents aged 15-18. Study subjects completed an online survey between the first and second lockdowns in Israel (April 2020 to September 2020). Participants reported the frequency at which they engaged in four different risky behaviors: general risky behavior, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption (binge drinking), and cannabis use. The most prevalent risky behavior in the sample was binge drinking (33.8%). The four measured risky behaviors were significantly correlated. Among participants who had previously engaged in a risky behavior assessed, most did not change the behavior frequency during the pandemic. All independent variables (sociodemographic characteristics, family support, and emotional, health excluding friends' support, physical activity volume, and coronavirus restrictions) were significantly different between participants engaging vs. not engaging in risky behaviors. Our findings suggest that family support is one of the most influential factors in preventing risky behavior during the pandemic, and they emphasize the importance of family-based interventions with children and adolescents from elementary to high school.

Abstract
Background An extended version of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) was used to inform the design of a framework for an educational resource around e-cigarette use in young people. Methods A sequential exploratory design was employed. In Phase 1, elicited behavioural, normative and control beliefs, via 7 focus groups with 51 participants, aged 11–16 years, identified salient beliefs around e-cigarette use. These were used to construct a questionnaire administered to 1511 young people aged 11–16 years, which determined predictors of e-cigarette use and ever use. In Phase 2, sociodemographic variables, e-cigarette knowledge, access, use, marketing and purchasing of e-cigarettes and smoking behaviour were also gathered. The composite findings from Phase 1 and 2 informed the design of a post primary educational resource in Phase 3 around e-cigarette use. Results Current e-cigarette use was 4%, with almost 23% reporting ever use, suggesting current use is stable but experimentation may be increasing in this cohort. Sociodemographic variables, knowledge of e-cigarettes, smoking behaviour and TPB variables (direct and indirect measures of attitudes, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control) accounted for 17% of the variance in current e-cigarette use, with higher intentions to use e-cigarettes within the next month, having the strongest impact on use (p < 0.001), followed by self-efficacy (p = 0.016). Sociodemographic and TPB variables accounted for 65% of the variance in intentions to use e-cigarettes in the next month; current e-cigarette use (p < 0.001), more positive attitudes (p < 0.001), stronger social influence (p < 0.001), higher self-efficacy (p < 0.001), higher control beliefs (p < 0.001) and greater motivation to use e-cigarettes (p < 0.001) were the main predictors of intentions. Phases 1 and 2 informed the mapping of key predictors of intentions and use of e-cigarettes onto the Theoretical Domains Framework, which identified appropriate intervention functions and behaviour change techniques. Conclusions This paper is the first to bridge the theoretical-practice gap in an area of significant public health importance through the development of a framework for a novel theory driven school-based educational resource aimed at reducing experimentation and uptake of e-cigarette use in young people. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Rising rates of adolescent electronic cigarette (ECIG) use is concerning because it can lead to adverse health outcomes and increased risk behavior. There are known predictors of ever versus never ECIG use, but less are known about risk factors for ever versus current use of ECIGs. Problem behavior theory (PBT) was used to evaluate possible risk factors for different ECIG use status. METHODS Participants were 573 high school students who completed questionnaires measuring ECIG use, as well as constructs within the Social Environment, Perceived Environment, Personality, and Behavior domains of PBT. Multinomial logistic regression was used to evaluate how predictor variables differentiated between participants who reported (a) never use, (b) ever ECIG use, or (c) current ECIG use. RESULTS Adolescents were more likely to endorse ever ECIG use than never use if they reported peer ECIG use, perceived more benefits and fewer costs (e.g., health) of ECIG use, higher extraversion, alcohol and cigarette use (never vs. ever vs. past 30 days), or attended a school with a higher percentage of socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Adolescents were more likely to report current ECIG use than ever ECIG use if they perceived fewer costs of ECIG use or used cannabis in their lifetime (yes/no). CONCLUSIONS PBT variables differentiated between ever ECIG use and never ECIG use. However, these variables did not differentiate between ever and current ECIG use. Identifying unique risk factors for current versus ever ECIG use is important to understanding persistent ECIG use and subsequent targeted prevention and intervention programs.

Abstract
The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has steadily grown over the past few years, rising in popularity amongst young adults, especially. Owing to the perception that e-cigarettes are less harmful than conventional cigarettes, some people have resorted to using them as a means of quitting cigarette smoking. This study aimed to assess the awareness, knowledge, perception and use of e-cigarettes among Jazan University students in Saudi Arabia. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted with 775 students. Using stratified random sampling to recruit study participants, the dataset tabling the use of e-cigarettes, as well as knowledge, perception and awareness was collected using a translated and culturally adapted structured Arabic questionnaire. Our results showed that 21.0% of the participants used e-cigarettes and 35.1% of them used them to quit smoking. E-cigarette use was mostly reported by students from the College of Medical Applied Sciences (31.7%). The overall knowledge score was 3.9, with a standard deviation of 1.3 for the score range from zero to seven. About half of the participants correctly identified e-cigarettes as not less addictive' than cigarettes. However, 70.2% of students failed to identify e-cigarettes as a source of second-hand exposure to nicotine. About two-thirds of the sample believed that e-cigarettes could adversely affect health. The perception of using e-cigarettes for smoking cessation was not significantly associated with e-cigarette use. In conclusion, the prevalence of e-cigarette use was similar to that reported in the literature. However, Jazan University students failed to identify the health risks associated with e-cigarette use. Therefore, a strategy to enhance students' awareness of the benefits and harms of e-cigarettes is needed.

Abstract
Background The pathogenesis of congenital heart disease (CHD) remains largely unknown, with only a small percentage explained solely by genetic causes. Modifiable environmental risk factors, such as alcohol, are suggested to play an important role in CHD pathogenesis. We sought to evaluate the association between prenatal alcohol exposure and CHD to gain insight into which components of cardiac development may be most vulnerable to the teratogenic effects of alcohol. Methods and Results This was a retrospective analysis of hospital discharge records from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development and linked birth certificate records restricted to singleton, live‐born infants from 2005 to 2017. Of the 5 820 961 births included, 16 953 had an alcohol‐related International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revisions (ICD‐9; ICD‐10) code during pregnancy. Log linear regression was used to calculate risk ratios (RR) for CHD among individuals with an alcohol‐related ICD‐9 and ICD10 code during pregnancy versus those without. Three models were created: (1) unadjusted, (2) adjusted for maternal demographic factors, and (3) adjusted for maternal demographic factors and comorbidities. Maternal alcohol‐related code was associated with an increased risk for CHD in all models (RR, 1.33 to 1.84); conotruncal (RR, 1.62 to 2.11) and endocardial cushion (RR, 2.71 to 3.59) defects were individually associated with elevated risk in all models. Conclusions Alcohol‐related diagnostic codes in pregnancy were associated with an increased risk of an offspring with a CHD, with a particular risk for endocardial cushion and conotruncal defects. The mechanistic basis for this phenotypic enrichment requires further investigation.

Abstract
Background: The use of electronic cigarettes and cannabis has significantly increased in recent years, which raises public health concerns. There are also concerns about the association of these substances with drinking behaviors. The main objective of the present study is to examine the association of e-cigarettes and/or cannabis use with heavy episodic drinking (HED) among Ontario adults. Methods: The sample consisted of 5,564 adults from the Monitor Survey in 2018 and 2019. Cannabis and e-cigarette use reflected any use of the substances in the past 12 months. HED was defined as consumption of four/five or more drinks on a single occasion at least monthly in the past 12 months. Odds ratios (OR) were estimated from logistic regression models accounting for complex survey design and sociodemographic factors. Results: Overall, the prevalence of HED was 17.5% in 2018 and 2019. Among participants who reported both e-cigarette and cannabis use, about one-half (50.4%) reported HED at least monthly. Adjusting for covariates, the odds of HED were 5.71 (95%CI, 3.92-8.30) times higher among those who reported both e-cigarette and cannabis use compared to those who used neither substance. Conclusions: The use of e-cigarettes and cannabis are significantly associated with heavy episodic drinking among adults, indicating that those who engage in the dual use of e-cigarette and cannabis may be an important group to target with intervention programs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study examined longitudinal associations between e-cigarette use, cigarette smoking, physical activity, and recreational screen time (ST) in a cohort of Canadian adolescents (ages 14-17 years; grades 9-12). METHODS Data from 5,951 adolescents who participated in COMPASS Year 4 (2015-16; baseline) and Year 6 (2017-18; follow-up) were used. Exposures included e-cigarette use and cigarette smoking. Outcomes included cut-points for moderate- to vigorous- physical activity (MVPA; ≥ 60 min/d), muscular strengthening exercises (MSE; ≥ 3 time/wk), participation in sport (SP; intramural or competitive), and recreational screen time (ST; ≤ 430 min/day). Generalized linear mixed models were performed. RESULTS E-cigarette use (16.6% vs 39.2%), cigarette smoking (0.9% vs 4.7%) and dual use (0.8% vs 4.1%) increased from baseline to follow-up. SP (70.8% vs 61.3%) and the prevalence of meeting MVPA (49.8% vs 42.1%) and MSE cut-points (54.0% vs 45.3%) decreased from baseline to follow-up. Recreational ST remained similar from baseline to follow-up. New e-cigarette use at follow-up was associated with maintenance of SP and meeting MVPA and MSE cut-points, but also with increased ST. New cigarette smoking at follow-up was associated with maintaining high ST and low SP. Cigarette smoking at baseline and follow-up was associated with maintaining high ST, low MSE, and low SP. Cigarette smoking cessation at follow-up was associated with increasing MVPA and MSE, decreasing ST, and maintaining low SP. CONCLUSION Given the clustering and co-occurring unhealthy behavioral patterns, intervention strategies to promote healthy lifestyles should take a holistic approach, by targeting multiple behavioral changes simultaneously. IMPLICATIONS This investigation highlighted that, unhealthy behaviors, particularly e-cigarette use, cigarette smoking, and excessive use of screens, tend to co-occur among Canadian adolescents. Therefore, intervention strategies to promote healthy lifestyles should take a holistic approach, by targeting multiple behavioral changes simultaneously particularly in school and community settings. As an exception, new and stable e-cigarette use appears to co-occur with achieving sufficient levels of physical activity. Increasing awareness about the risk of e-cigarette use may target population groups that are physically and socially active (e.g., athletes, sport teams).

Abstract
Introduction This study examines correlates of lifetime (ie, ever vaped) and past month vape use among students aged 17 to 19 years, 20 to 25 years, and 26+ years from Western University in London, Ontario. The secondary objective is to assess lifetime and past month vape use among students not of legal age to purchase vaping products in Ontario (ie, those 17 to 18 years only). Methods Using Qualtrics, a cross-sectional survey was sent via email to all students at Western University (N = 38 442), assessing their current and past risk-taking behaviors, mental health, sociodemographic characteristics, as well as questions pertaining to their family structure and socioeconomic background during childhood. Students were asked if they had ever vaped in their lifetime and about past month vape use. Logistic regression models were used to assess correlates of lifetime and past month vape use. Results The sample consisted of 2626 university students. Compared to those ages 26+ years, teenage university students were 10 times more likely to have vaped in the past month and males were twice as likely as females to have vaped. Alcohol use doubled the odds of vaping in the past month, whereas cigarette, cannabis, or cocaine use approximately tripled the odds. Students who reported many sexual partners were far more likely to have vaped in the past month. Conclusion Vape use is more common among teenage university students, males, those who drink alcohol, smoke, use cannabis or cocaine, and who report many sexual partners.

Abstract
Adolescence is a transitional period between childhood and adulthood, in which the individual undergoes significant cognitive, behavioral, physical, emotional, and social developmental changes. During this period, adolescents engage in experimentation and risky behaviors such as licit and illicit drug use. Adolescents' high vulnerability to abuse drugs and natural reinforcers leads to greater risk for developing substance use disorders (SUDs) during adulthood. Accumulating evidence indicates that the use and abuse of licit and illicit drugs during adolescence and emerging adulthood can disrupt the cholinergic system and its processes. This review will focus on the effects of peri-adolescent nicotine and/or alcohol use, or exposure, on the cholinergic system during adulthood from preclinical and clinical studies. This review further explores potential cholinergic agents and pharmacological manipulations to counteract peri-adolescent nicotine and/or alcohol abuse.

Abstract
Nicotine induces long-term changes in the neural activity of the mesocorticolimbic reward pathway structures. The mechanisms involved in this process have not been fully characterized. The hypothesis discussed here proposed that epigenetic regulation participates in the installation of persistent adaptations and long-lasting synaptic plasticity generated by nicotine action on the mesolimbic dopamine neurons of zebrafish. The epigenetic mechanisms induced by nicotine entail histone and DNA chemical modifications, which have been described to lead to changes in gene expression. Among the enzymes that catalyze epigenetic chemical modifications, histone deacetylases (HDACs) remove acetyl groups from histones, thereby facilitating DNA relaxation and making DNA more accessible to gene transcription. DNA methylation, which is dependent on DNA methyltransferase (DNMTs) activity, inhibits gene expression by recruiting several methyl binding proteins that prevent RNA polymerase binding to DNA. In zebrafish, phenylbutyrate (PhB), an HDAC inhibitor, abolishes nicotine rewarding properties together with a series of typical reward-associated behaviors. Furthermore, PhB and nicotine alter long- and short-term object recognition memory in zebrafish, respectively. Regarding DNA methylation effects, a methyl group donor L-methionine (L-met) was found to dramatically reduce nicotine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) in zebrafish. Simultaneous treatment with DNMT inhibitor 5-aza-2’-deoxycytidine (AZA) was found to reverse the L-met effect on nicotine-induced CPP as well as nicotine reward-specific effects on genetic expression in zebrafish. Therefore, pharmacological interventions that modulate epigenetic regulation of gene expression should be considered as a potential therapeutic method to treat nicotine addiction.

Abstract
PURPOSE Although successful smoking cessation after cancer diagnosis is important, research on e-cigarette use and smoking behavior among cancer survivors (CS) is limited. This study compared cigarette and e-cigarette use among CS and non-cancer populations in Korea. METHODS This study analyzed the 2013-2018 National Health and Nutrition Survey data to investigate e-cigarette use and smoking behavior among Korean CS. The data were categorized into 1260 CS and 5040 non-cancer populations using the propensity score matching method. A multiple logistic regression was conducted among CS who previously used cigarettes or e-cigarettes to evaluate factors influencing successful cessation. RESULTS Regarding conventional smoking, the proportion of ex-smokers was higher (25.2% versus 19.9%) than current smokers (6.7% versus 10.6%) in the CS group than in the propensity matched non-cancer population (PMNCP) (p < 0.001). However, ever use of e-cigarettes did not differ between them (2.4% versus 2.7%, p = 0.529). Successful cessation, defined as not using either cigarettes or e-cigarettes, correlated with problem drinking (OR 0.442, 95% CI 0.207-0.940), depression (OR 0.276, 95% CI 0.087-0.872), and cancer sites. CS of stomach, liver, colorectal, and lung cancer maintained higher successful smoking cessation rates than PMNCP. CONCLUSIONS Korean CS had a higher cessation rate than PMNCP regarding conventional smoking; however, there was no difference in e-cigarette use. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS In Korea, some CS continue to use e-cigarettes, and physicians should focus on helping them quit. Individualized and timely interventions should be provided for both cigarette and e-cigarette users, considering factors influencing successful cessation.

Abstract
This study examined whether e-cigarette/cigarette use status would differ by student race/ethnicity. Using the 2017 Youth risk behavior survey (YRBS), weighted Chi-square tests with Rao-Scott adjustments and adjusted weighted multinomial logistic regression analysis were conducted to examine the relationship. Weighted Chi-square tests showed that American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) students had the highest prevalence rates among dual users (16.2%) and e-cigarette only users (11.3%), while White peers had the highest prevalence rates among cigarette only users (3.5%). The results of weighted multinomial logistic regression indicated that AI/AN students had higher odds than White peers of being dual users (Relative risk ratio (RRR), 2.10, 95% CI, 1.01, 4.39), while Black, Hispanic, Asian and multi-racial groups had lower odds than White peers of being dual users. Additionally, Asian students had lower odds than White students of being e-cigarette only users, whereas Black and Asian students had lower odds than their White peers of being cigarette only users. Given that AI/AN students are most vulnerable to e-cigarette/cigarette use, there should be comprehensive tobacco prevention and intervention approaches that could narrow racial/ethnic differences among both youths and adults at population level.

Abstract
CONTEXT Electronic-cigarette use, or vaping, among youth has increased substantially in recent years. Tobacco smoking shows a strong association with other risk behaviors, but the association between vaping and other risk behaviors has rarely been explored. We examine the relationship between youth vaping and substance use, risky driving behaviors, and lack of bicycle helmet use. PROGRAM Data from the 2015 and 2017 New Mexico Youth Risk and Resiliency Survey were analyzed to evaluate the association between the use of e-cigarettes and other youth risk behaviors. Study participants were high school students, grades 9 to 12. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). EVALUATION A majority of students reported ever using e-cigarettes (54%). In 2015, e-cigarette users were more likely than nonusers to be Hispanic (65% vs 54%, P ≤ .001) and 16 years of age or older (58% vs 42%, P = .018). We found strong, statistically significant associations between e-cigarette use and not wearing a bicycle helmet (OR = 2.62, 95% CI: 1.95-3.51), texting while driving (OR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.79-2.66), driving after drinking (OR = 2.95, 95% CI: 1.61-5.40), current marijuana use (OR = 6.38, 95% CI: 4.65-8.76), current painkiller use (OR = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.63-3.77), and current heroin use (OR = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.06-0.33). Driving after drinking was not significantly associated with e-cigarette use in 2017. DISCUSSION E-cigarette use is associated with multiple other risk behaviors among youth. Further research should focus on environmental and policy efforts to reduce access to e-cigarettes by youth as well as interventions that address the underlying causes of the constellation of risk behaviors.

Abstract
Aim: Popularity of electronic cigarettes (i.e. e-cigarettes) is soaring in Canada. Understanding person-level correlates of current e-cigarette use (vaping) is crucial to guide tobacco policy, but prior studies have not fully identified these correlates due to model overfitting caused by multicollinearity. This study addressed this issue by using classification tree, a machine learning algorithm.
Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study used the Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol, and Drugs Survey (CTADS) from 2017 that targeted residents aged 15 or older. Forty-six person-level characteristics were first screened in a logistic mixed-effects regression procedure for their strength in predicting vaper type (current vs. former vaper) among people who reported to have ever vaped. A 9:1 ratio was used to randomly split the data into a training set and a validation set. A classification tree model was developed using the cross-validation method on the training set using the selected predictors and assessed on the validation set using sensitivity, specificity and accuracy.
Results: Of the 3,059 people with an experience of vaping, the average age was 24.4 years (standard deviation = 11.0), with 41.9% of them being female and 8.5% of them being aboriginal. There were 556 (18.2%) current vapers. The classification tree model performed relatively well and suggested attraction to e-cigarette flavors was the most important correlate of current vaping, followed by young age (< 18) and believing vaping to be less harmful to oneself than cigarette smoking.
Conclusions: People who vape due to flavors are associated with very high risk of becoming current vapers. The findings of this study provide evidence that supports the ongoing ban on flavored vaping products in the US and suggests a similar regulatory intervention may be effective in Canada.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Youth and young adults with asthma use electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) at a higher rate than those without asthma. However, the factors that influence e-cigarette use in this vulnerable population are scarce. Therefore, the study aim was to assess the effects of anxiety, depression, impulsivity, and substance use in the relationship between e-cigarette use and youth and young adults with asthma status. METHOD We enrolled youth and young adults (15-25 years old) in Alabama with a clinical diagnosis of asthma (n = 151) or without a diagnosis of any chronic pulmonary disease (n = 132; reference group). Validated questionnaires were administered to collect demographic data and assess susceptibility to e-cigarette use, current use of e-cigarettes, anxiety, depression, impulsivity, and substance use (alcohol and cannabis). We then conducted parallel mediation analyses to test the mediational effects of anxiety, depression, and impulsivity, and moderation analyses to assess the moderation effects of substance use in the relationship between asthma and e-cigarette use. RESULTS Susceptibility to e-cigarette use and current use of e-cigarettes were both lower among youth and young adults with asthma. After controlling for covariates, anxiety, depression, and impulsivity were not significant mediators of the relationships between asthma and susceptibility to e-cigarette use and current use of e-cigarettes. However, the frequency of cannabis use in the past 30 days moderated the relationship between asthma and susceptibility to e-cigarette use (Unstandardized beta = - 2.03, p = 0.046), such that more frequent cannabis use was associated with less susceptibility. CONCLUSION Among youth and young adults with asthma, cannabis use was associated with reduced susceptibility to e-cigarette use. Longitudinal assessments of this population are needed to better assess the temporal relationship between asthma, comorbid substance use, and e-cigarette use among young people with asthma to avoid pulmonary complications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Reduced risk perceptions influence young people's consumption behaviours of e-cigarettes, suggesting that a health halo effect may be associated with these devices. Product, performative, and social factors contribute to the appeal of e-cigarettes, with young people using e-cigarettes with friends as part of social interactions. This study explored the factors that influence the appeal and risk perceptions associated with e-cigarettes among young Cambodian men. METHODS A mixed-method, interviewer-administered survey with 147 young men in Cambodia, who were aged between 18 and 24 years and identified as cigarette smokers. Participants described their attitudes and consumption behaviours surrounding e-cigarettes, recalled e-cigarette promotions, and described their risk perceptions towards e-cigarettes. Descriptive statistics were calculated for quantitative data, and thematic analysis was conducted for qualitative data. RESULTS Some participants associated e-cigarettes with affluence and exclusivity, describing these devices as products that rich and/or younger people use. Participants also described product attributes that were appealing about e-cigarettes, such as variety of flavours, vapour, and performing smoke 'styles' with friends, which differentiated the product from combustible cigarettes. Participants also had reduced risk perceptions towards e-cigarettes, with some commenting that e-cigarettes were not harmful or might be health-enhancing. CONCLUSION Some young people may perceive e-cigarettes as a form of conspicuous consumption, which they associated with social status and identity. A health halo effect appears to be associated with e-cigarettes among some young people. This may influence young people to underestimate the potential health risks associated with these devices.

Abstract
Electronic nicotine products remain popular among college students. These products contain heavy metals, carcinogens and the addictive substance nicotine. By understanding where students are in their behavior change can help to determine and focus messages and campaigns. The aim of this study was to assess predictors of the Transtheoretical model in college-aged vaping. This study consisted of an online/Ipad delivery of a voluntary survey to 1249 young adults/college students at 5 universities (International and within the U.S.). Data was analyzed using Stata. Regression analysis was performed to assess predictors of the stages in the Transtheoretical Model of behavior change. Our study found that women tended to be further along in the stages of change as compared to their male counterparts. Additionally, the older students were more likely to be in maintenance stage as compared to the younger students. The students who vaped longer tended to not have advance into any of the stages of change besides precontemplation. Understanding where students are in the stages of change can help to inform behavioral message campaigns enabling more focused targeting of messages and efforts to reduce consumption. Electronic nicotine products are highly prevalent on college campuses, both nationally and internationally. The nicotine is addictive and may result in less of a desire or ability to quit as young adults age.

Abstract
CONTEXT.— Vaping is the inhalation of heated aerosol from a small battery-powered device as a method to deliver nicotine or other substances. A recent outbreak of severe respiratory illness primarily in the United States has put a spotlight on vaping and its potential risks. OBJECTIVE.— To familiarize pathologists with vaping, the cytologic and histopathologic features of vaping-associated acute lung injury, and the role of pathology in this diagnosis. DATA SOURCES.— A targeted literature review was performed. CONCLUSIONS.— Most cases of vaping-associated lung injury have been linked to vaping products containing tetrahydrocannabinol or other cannabinoids. Lung biopsies show a spectrum of nonspecific acute lung injury patterns (organizing pneumonia, diffuse alveolar damage, acute fibrinous, and organizing pneumonia, or combinations of the above), accompanied by prominent, foamy macrophage accumulation. Injury is usually accentuated around small airways. Lipid-laden macrophages can be identified in bronchioloalveolar lavage fluid in most patients and these can be highlighted using lipid stains, such as oil red O, but the clinical utility of this finding remains unclear, as lipid-laden macrophages can be seen in a wide variety of processes and should not be relied upon to make the diagnosis. Classic histologic features of exogenous lipoid pneumonia have not been identified in tissue samples. Lightly pigmented macrophages, similar to those seen with traditional cigarette smoking, are present in some cases but are usually a minor feature. To date, no specific pathologic features for vaping-related injury have been identified, and it remains a diagnosis of exclusion that requires clinicopathologic correlation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The recreational use of cannabis was legalized across Canada in October 2018. While many people use cannabis without harm, adverse outcomes have been noted in a few populations, including middle-aged and older adults. Given that the current literature has neglected to study cannabis use among this population and between sexes, the objective of our study was to identify the prevalence, characteristics, and patterns of cannabis use among middle and older aged males and females prior to legalization in Canada. METHODS Secondary analysis was conducted on the Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drugs Survey 2017, with the sample restricted to adults ages 40 and above. The main outcome was defined as past-year cannabis use and statistical analysis was conducted separately for males and females. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify associations between the main outcome and various sociodemographic, health, and substance use variables. Explanatory supplementary variables were also explored. RESULTS In 2017, 5.9% of females and 9.0% of males over the age of 40 reported past-year cannabis use. Almost 62% of males who used cannabis in the past-year reported a failed attempt at reducing or stopping their cannabis use. Over half (56%) of older females, self-reported using cannabis for medical purposes. Additionally, over one in five older adults reported using a vaporizer or e-cigarette as a delivery method for cannabis. Significant characteristics of male cannabis use included having no marital partner, cigarette smoking, and illegal drug use. Furthermore, significant predictors of past-year cannabis use in females included residing in an urban community, Eastern- Atlantic provinces or British Columbia, having fair/poor mental health, smoking cigarettes, use of other tobacco products, and illegal drugs. CONCLUSION To our such knowledge, this is the first nationally representative study to outline the prevalence, characteristics, and patterns of past-year cannabis use prior to Canadian legalization, among middle and older aged Canadians. Results from this study are expected to be used to reliably to track changes in usage, behaviours, and related disorders in the years to come.

Abstract
PURPOSE Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use has increased exponentially among the youth in the United States and may increase the incidence of substance use. METHODS Youth participants (12-17 years) were surveyed through the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health study over a three-year time period. Youth with any baseline substance use or diagnosis of an attention deficit disorder were excluded from the analysis. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to assess the association between e-cigarette use at Wave 1 and incident substance use (marijuana, painkillers, sedatives, or tranquilizers and Ritalin/Adderall) and polysubstance use at Wave 2 or 3, and marijuana use in the electronic nicotine device at Wave 3. RESULTS Baseline ever e-cigarette users who had no history of marijuana, nonprescribed drugs and illicit substance use in Wave 1 had increased odds of reporting incident use of marijuana (odds ratio 2.59, 95% confidence interval: 1.90-3.52), nonprescribed Ritalin/Adderall use (1.89, 1.09-3.28), or polysubstance use (2.09, 1.43-3.05) in Wave 2 or 3 compared to never e-cigarette users. They were also more likely to report use of marijuana in the electronic nicotine product (2.26, 1.56-3.27) in Wave 3 compared to never e-cigarette users. There was no statistically significant association between baseline e-cigarette use and incident use of painkillers, sedatives, or tranquilizers in Wave 2 or 3 (1.21, .79-1.87). CONCLUSIONS E-cigarette use is associated with incident use of marijuana, marijuana in electronic nicotine devices, Ritalin/Adderall, and polysubstance use but not painkillers, sedatives, or tranquilizers. Results indicate that e-cigarettes are associated with subsequent additional risky health behaviors in youth.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE Youth use of e-cigarettes is reaching 'epidemic proportions,' even as combustible tobacco use is declining. Comparison of risk factors that are uniquely associated with e-cigarette and combustible tobacco use among adolescents is warranted. METHODS Six waves of data from the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance (TATAMS) study (n=3907; N=461,069; 2014-2017) were used in this analysis. A random intercept logistic regression model was used to compare intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental risk factors for use of both products based on the Social Ecological Model. RESULTS Risk factors that were significantly associated with both past 30-day use of e-cigarette and combustible tobacco products over time included past 30-day use of marijuana and alcohol, social acceptability of product use, having friends and family members who used the products, and male gender. Increasing age, worse academic performance, higher sensation seeking score, higher recall of social media promotion in the past 30 days, and lower positive affect score were associated with past 30-day use of combustible tobacco only. White race was associated with past-30 day use of e-cigarettes only. CONCLUSION Involving peers and parents in preventive interventions designed to reduce uptake of these products is paramount, as is the need to address other substance use, like alcohol and marijuana. Efforts should also be made to create a social climate that makes tobacco use (e-cigarettes and combustible products) less acceptable and desirable.

Abstract
Concurrent use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) as an alternative source of nicotine may lead to lower smoke exposure, tobacco addiction and reinforcing value of conventional combustible cigarettes. In two different cohorts, we characterized smokers, dual cigarette/e-cigarette users, and e-cigarette-only users in terms of sociodemographic, motives and patterns of e-cigarette use. Differences in smoking-related characteristics and reinforcing value of cigarettes between smokers and e-cigarette dual users were also examined. Two cohorts comprising 339 community adults [Sample 1; aged 18-65] and 293 young adult binge drinkers [Sample 2; aged 19-24] were recruited in Hamilton, Ontario. All participants provided expired carbon monoxide (CO) samples and completed an assessment battery including the Fagerström Test of Nicotine Dependence (FTND), the Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives (WISDM), and the Cigarette Purchase Task (CPT). In both samples, smoking rate, CO level, FTND, WISDM, and CPT responses did not significantly differ between smokers and dual users. Compared to e-cigarette-only individuals, dual users from the two cohorts reported a greater use of e-cigarettes for quitting smoking, but dual product consumers exhibited no significant differences in motivation for change relative to combustible-only smokers. Relative to smokers, e-cigarette dual users did not show lower levels of smoking, lower severity of cigarette addiction and reinforcing value of cigarettes in these samples. These findings suggest that concurrent e-cigarette use does not affect combustible tobacco use or motivation, or reduce its harms.

Abstract
Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are a modern nicotine delivery system that rapidly grew in widespread use, particularly in younger populations. Given the long history of the comorbidity of alcohol and nicotine use, the rising prevalence of ECs raises the question as to their role in the consumption of alcohol. Of the numerous models of ECs available, JUUL is the most popular. This narrative review aims to determine current trends in literature regarding the relationship between EC and alcohol dual use, as well as hypothesize potential pathogenic tissue damage and summarize areas for future study, including second-hand vapor exposure and calling for standardization among studies. In summary, EC users are more likely to participate in hazardous drinking and are at higher risk for alcohol use disorder (AUD). We surmise the pathogenic damage of dual use may exhibit an additive effect, particularly in pathogen clearance from the lungs, increased inflammation and decreased immune response, physical damage to epithelial cells, and exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-like illnesses. A better understanding of pathogenic damages is critical to understand the risks placed on dual users when exposed to respiratory pathogens, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Abstract
Purpose: This study describes the prevalence trends of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use in young adult cancer survivors and compares these to the prevalence among young adults without a cancer history. It also examines the association between conventional cigarette use, binge drinking, depression, and other sociodemographic factors, and e-cigarette use in young adult cancer survivors. Methods: Cross-sectional analyses, using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2016-2018, were done. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the associations between conventional cigarette use, binge drinking, and depression as well as other factors associated with e-cigarette use in young adult cancer survivors. Results: Lifetime e-cigarette use increased from 40.1% in 2016 to 47.4% in 2018. Former smokers were 5.47 times (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.48-8.61) more likely to be lifetime e-cigarette users and 1.9 times (95% CI: 1.12-3.23) more likely to be current e-cigarette users compared to never smokers. Current smokers were over sixteen folds more likely (adjusted odds ratio: 16.50, 95% CI: 11.59-23.57) to be lifetime e-cigarette users and 2.1 times (95% CI: 1.24-3.57) more likely to be current e-cigarette users relative to never smokers. Furthermore, binge drinking and depression were associated with higher odds of lifetime e-cigarette use, while increasing age was associated with lower odds of e-cigarette use. Compared to females, males were significantly more likely to be current users of e-cigarettes relative to former users. Conclusion: Conventional cigarette use, binge drinking, depression, age, and gender were found to be associated with e-cigarette use among young adult cancer survivors. Policies targeted at e-cigarette control among young adult cancer survivors need to be multipronged, simultaneously addressing other harmful practices such as binge drinking and the use of conventional cigarettes.

Abstract
The prevalence of e-cigarette use among youth has risen dramatically over the past several years. Many concerns have been raised by this epidemic, including the increased likelihood that those adolescents who "vape" will also go on to smoke conventional cigarettes and use illicit drugs. Pediatricians are appropriately positioned to discuss vaping with patients and provide further education to families. This article aims to provide clinicians with a better understanding of vaping products and terminology, as well as the prevalence and potential harms of e-cigarette use. Abstract
In this review, we examine the known and suspected toxicity of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in adolescents and young adults, to improve awareness of risks and identification of complications of their use. The use of e-cigarettes, or "vaping," is exploding among the pediatric population. E-cigarettes heat a solution containing a psychoactive compound, most commonly nicotine or tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), along with flavorings and other additives to a vapor, which users inhale. Since their introduction in the early 2000s, e-cigarette use is now prolific among youth, per the Monitoring the Future survey, with over 40% of high school seniors reporting use within the past year. Adolescents are vulnerable to the risks of e-cigarettes, as they are targeted as new consumers with advertisements and flavoring compounds, and are not utilizing them as a means to smoking cessation. The pulmonary risks of vaping are rapidly emerging, with the most immediately alarming being the condition electronic-cigarette/vaping associated lung injury (EVALI). Additionally, there have been more recent studies showing extrapulmonary effects including cardiovascular, immunologic and neuro-developmental effects. Many of these effects are likely dose-dependent. Public health efforts are urgently needed to decrease or eliminate new e-cigarette initiation, and support should be established to assist current e-cigarette users with cessation. We strongly advocate for the elimination of e-cigarette flavorings and advertising directed at adolescents, and call for physicians to be cognizant of this expanding epidemic.

Abstract
Electronic cigarette use has increased over the past decade. Its potential role in smoking cessation, in addiction and as a 'gateway' to tobacco smoking is subject to intense research. This cross-sectional study, carried out in 2013, aims to present the habits of students aged 13-15 in Greece with regard to e-cigarettes and investigate potential risk factors and the relationship between e-cigarettes, tobacco smoking and other nicotine products. It is the first such study to be carried out in Greece. The survey was based on the standardized methodology of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey. All potential associations were investigated using multiple logistic regression. In total 2.8% of the 4096 participating students were current e-cigarette users and 12.3% of them were ever users. E-cigarette use was associated with male gender, being older, current use of combustible tobacco products and e-cigarette use in the family. Ever e-cigarette use, being older, female gender and higher pocket money were associated with an increased susceptibility to tobacco smoking. E-cigarette prevalence in Greece in 2013 was similar to that of other, developed countries. The smoking and vaping habits of adolescents must be monitored in order to assess trends over time and whether any policy alterations are necessary.

Abstract
AbstractAimsThis study examined the reasons for e-cigarette (EC) use, changes in self-efficacy and association between EC use and cessation of tobacco among Canadian young adult smokers over a 6-month period.MethodsA secondary analysis was conducted using data from a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of young adult Canadian smokers. EC exposure was defined as persistent, transient and non-use of ECs at baseline and follow-up. The association between EC exposure and cessation was examined using logistic regression and adjusting for co-variates.ResultsAt 6-month follow-up, persistent EC use was associated with a lower cessation rate (13%) than transient (23%) or non-use (29%). After adjusting for covariates, non-use and transient use were associated with higher odds of cessation than persistent use (AOR = 3.23, 95% CI = 1.41–7.40, P < 0.01; AOR = 2.40, 95% CI = 1.01–5.58, P < 0.05). At 6-month follow-up, persistent users (68%) had high self-efficacy as compared to transient (15%) or non-use (12%). Top reasons for EC use included use as a quit aid (67%), perceived use as less harmful (52%) and taste (32%).ConclusionsAmong young adult Canadian smokers enrolled in a RCT of a cessation intervention, persistent and transient use of ECs was associated with a lower smoking cessation rate at 6 months.
