Abstract
The American Heart Association (AHA) has devised Life's Essential 8, a set of eight evidence-based health behaviors that play a crucial role in optimizing cardiovascular health and overall well-being. In addition to Life's Essential 8, enhanced screening for Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) Syndrome risk factors into routine athlete screening also provides a more comprehensive approach for ensuring athlete safety and long-term health. Incorporating Life's Essential 8 and CKM Syndrome metrics into athlete health evaluations will improve the sports performance of athletes and help optimize their long-term health.

Abstract
Purpose: Athletes struggle with bone stress injuries despite the many risk factors reported in previous studies. However, the relationship between body weight measurement frequency and risk of stress fractures has yet to be investigated. Thus, the purpose of this study is to seek the link between body weight measurement frequency and the occurrence of stress fractures. Method: This cross-sectional study included female athletes who were requested to fill out an anonymous online survey regarding their personal background, including the history of amenorrhea and stress fractures. In addition, the frequency at which they measured their body weight and composition and whether they had to report the same to their coaches and seniors were asked. Results: A total of 172 collegiate female athletes for 28 different types of sports participated in this study. Among the included athletes, 35.7% had a history of amenorrhea, whereas 29.7% had a history of stress fractures. A total of 57.0% of the athletes answered that in their team, they measure their body weight on a regular basis, and 33.1% of the athletes answered that they reported the data to their coaches. Logistic regression analysis revealed that those who measured their body weight at least once a day had a higher risk of sustaining stress fractures than did those who measured their body weight less than once a day (OR = 2.36, 95% CI 1.06-5.27, p = .04). Conclusion: Body weight measurement frequency was associated with the risk of stress fractures in female collegiate athletes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The authors report no conflicts of interest.To determine baseline sleep characteristics of male/female student-athletes across multiple sports using objective and subjective measures. DESIGN Prospective study. SETTING Division I college. PARTICIPANTS Eighty-two male and female Division I student-athletes. INTERVENTIONS Participants completed 2 validated sleep questionnaires (Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS] and Single-Item Sleep Quality Scale [SISQS]) to assess subjective sleep. They also wore a validated sleep monitoring device (WHOOP 4.0 band) for at least 14 nights to collect objective data on total sleep time (TST) and sleep architecture. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Overnight sleep variables, including TST, time spent awake in bed after falling asleep, time spent in light sleep, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and slow-wave sleep (SWS) cycles. Sleep quality and daytime sleepiness were also assessed. RESULTS There were no statistical differences between male and female student-athletes in average TST, sleep architecture, sleep consistency, SISQS, and ESS scores. The average TST was 409.2 ± 36.3 minutes. Sleep architecture consisted of 25.6% REM, 19.9% SWS, and 54.4% light sleep. The average sleep consistency was 61.6% ± 8.9%. The average SISQS score was 6.48 ± 1.71, and the average ESS score was 7.57 ± 3.82. A significant difference was found in average wake time between males and females (55.0 vs 43.7 min, P = 0.020), with an overall average of 50.2 ± 16.2 minutes. CONCLUSIONS College student-athletes do not typically obtain the recommended amount of sleep. Optimizing sleep can positively affect academic and athletic performance.

Abstract
For athletes, sleep is essential for recovery and performance. Yet, up to two-thirds of athletes report poor sleep quality. Comprehensive data across all sports disciplines on the underlying causes of sleep problems are missing. We reanalyzed a data set of N = 1004 Swiss top athletes across an extensive array of 88 sports to gain knowledge on the specific deficits in sleep health with respect to gender, sport classes, sport-related factors, and well-being. We found that 18% of athletes were affected by at least two out of five high-risk sleep factors: 9% of athletes slept less than 6 h per day, 30% were dissatisfied with their sleep, 17% showed problems falling asleep within 30 min, 18% of athletes reported difficulty maintaining sleep more than three times a week, and 6% of athletes used sleeping pills more than once a week. We found sleep health strongly linked to overall well-being and mental health (22% showed at least moderate symptoms of either depression or anxiety). Therefore, screening and treating sleep disorders might effectively improve mental health and general well-being as well as performance among athletes around the globe.

Abstract
Decreased sleep quality and duration is associated with an array of negative health outcomes. Evidence suggests athletes are susceptible to sleep inadequacies that may in turn affect their health and dietary behaviours. This study aimed to explore the sleep profile of both male and female Gaelic games players, at an elite and sub-elite level and compare how poor sleep relates to subjective health complaints and food cravings. One hundred and seventy Gaelic games players completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Subjective Health Complaints Inventory (SHC) and Food Cravings Questionnaire-Trait-Reduced (FCQ-T-r). Participants were categorised into two groups: poor sleepers (PSQI ≥ 5) and good sleepers (PSQI < 5). Outcome measures of health and food cravings were analysed across the groups, Mann-Whitney U tests were used to assess differences, and Spearman's rank-order correlations were used to determine relationships between variables. Sixty-seven % of athletes were categorised as poor sleepers. There were no significant differences in PSQI scores across genders (p = 0.088) or playing level (p = 0.072). Poor sleepers experienced significantly increased SHC (p < 0.001) and female athletes had significantly more SHC compared to males (p < 0.001). Female athletes experienced more food cravings than males (p = 0.013). However, there were no significant differences in food cravings between good and poor sleepers (p = 0.104). The findings suggest a high prevalence of poor sleepers amongst GAA athletes. Furthermore, a significant relationship exists between poor sleep and health complaints with females at a higher risk of worsened health complaints and higher food cravings. Sleep screening and education interventions to enhance sleep in GAA athletes are advocated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the feasibility of performance enhancement coaching (PEC) for newly appointed Urology registrars (ST3s), specifically: whether the concept appealed, and which areas beyond technical skills acquisition were felt to be most relevant or useful. SUBJECTS AND METHODS All delegates on the Urology Bootcamp 2023 were invited to take part in an online survey before and after a 2-hour PEC workshop, collecting: basic demographic data, performance challenges, and the important aspects to include in, and consider with, a coaching programme. The workshop was delivered by a surgeon with a professional coaching qualification, to groups of four delegates at a time over 4 days. Ten pre-defined areas were offered during the session. RESULTS On a scale of 1 (poor) to 10 (excellent), the 62 participants' overall health was reported as a median of 8/10 (physical) and 7/10 (mental). Anxiety during performance was the most common concern (63%) and was accompanied by a tremor in 55%. The next most popular concerns, with 19% of responses each, were: sleep, insufficient operative skill or expertise, and worry about relationships with trainers. The commonest topics discussed were 'the inner critic' (100%), 'autonomic modulation' (69%), 'not working, well' (13%) and 'optimising study' (6%). Seventy-seven per cent were unaware of PEC for practising surgeons. All respondents felt that they would benefit from PEC to some extent (80% ≥8/10 where 10/10 was 'very useful'), ideally at the ST3 level. Sixty-two percent of respondents said there should be a fee for trainees, whereas 38% thought it should be free and paid for by their training authorities. CONCLUSION The concept of PEC is acceptable to ST3 Urology trainees, with particular interest in techniques to mitigate negative self-talk and autonomic modulation techniques. Existing barriers to coaching for the surgical community would need to be addressed in designing an acceptable coaching programme.

Abstract
The regularity of the fluctuations present in torque signals represent the adaptability of the motor control. While previous research showed how it is affected by neuromuscular fatigue and ageing, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. It is currently under debate whether these changes are explained by central or peripheral neuromuscular mechanisms. Here, we experimentally manipulated the sleep of thirteen young adults through a supervised 24 h-sleep deprivation protocol. This study aimed to investigate the effect of sleep deprivation on the regularity of torque fluctuations, and other standard torque-related outcomes (Peak Torque - PT - and Rate of Torque Development - RTD). The participants were asked to perform knee extension maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and submaximal knee extensions at 40% of MVC for 30 s. PT and RTD were calculated from the MVC and the regularity of the torque fluctuations was determined on the submaximal task through Sample Entropy (SampEn). In addition, rate of perceived effort (RPE) was collected. We found no significant changes in PT and RTD. The regularity of torque fluctuations significantly increased (i.e., a decrease in SampEn) after 24 h-sleep deprivation (PRE = 1.76 ± 0.268, POS24 = 1.71 ± 0.306; p = 0.044). Importantly, we found a negative correlation between RPE and SampEn relative changes after sleep deprivation. This study brings new insights towards the understanding of the underlying mechanisms that explain changes in torque fluctuations, demonstrating that these changes are not limited to neuromuscular processes but are also likely to be affected by other domains, such as psychological profile, which can indirectly affect the neural drive to the muscles.

Abstract
The current study aimed to describe sleep habits and analyze the associations between sleep indices, changes in perceived fatigue (Δ Fatigue) and external training load measures in women soccer players during a 7-day training camp. Sixteen elite women soccer players (age: 25.4 ± 3.6 years; mean ± SD) from the Portuguese Women's National Team participated in the study. Sleep indices (sleep duration and efficiency) were measured using a wrist-worn accelerometer. External training loads measures were measured using GPS devices. Players also reported perceived fatigue using a Likert scale (1 - very, very low to 7 - very, very high) before and immediately after sleep. Players' within-subject coefficient of variation for sleep duration was 5.6%, and 4.6% for sleep efficiency. Individually, 8 players (50%) slept less than 7 h per night throughout the training camp, and the same number of athletes had a sleep efficiency lower than 85%. Similar values (p<0.05) were measured for sleep duration and efficiency between training and match days. A moderate negative within-subjects correlation was found between Δ Fatigue and sleep duration (adjusted for pre-sleep fatigue) [r = -0.32; 95% Confidence Interval (-0.51 - -0.08); p = 0.04]. These findings reinforce the importance of sleep in the recovery process of elite women soccer players, showing that more sleep may help to attenuate fatigue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-reported wellbeing measures such as mood and soreness have been identified as predictors of injury risk. However, most research has focused on investigating time-loss injuries even though nontime-loss injuries are more prevalent. HYPOTHESIS Impairments in sleep and subjective wellbeing would be associated with increased injury for both time-loss and nontime-loss injuries. STUDY DESIGN Prospective longitudinal study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level 3. METHODS During 2022, 127 athletes completed a daily survey that inquired about training load and sleep from the previous day along with mood, stress, and soreness on the current day. Incidence of injury was also monitored using documentation provided by athletes' respective athletic trainers. Mixed effect models were used to analyze the relationship between wellbeing and sleep measures with injury. RESULTS Self-reported wellbeing, based most closely on soreness the day of injury, by National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 collegiate athletes was predictive of time-loss injuries, whereas no significant relationship was identified for nontime-loss injuries. Specifically, 1 unit increase in soreness was associated with a 39% increase in odds of sustaining a time-loss injury. CONCLUSION This study found that subjective wellbeing and sleep have a different relationship with injury dependent upon whether the resulting injury leads to time loss. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Self-reported wellbeing appears to be a relevant predictor of injury among collegiate athletes for time-loss injuries.

Abstract
Understanding the factors that contribute to exercise response variation is the first step in achieving the goal of developing personalized exercise prescriptions. This review discusses the key molecular and other mechanistic factors, both extrinsic and intrinsic, that influence exercise responses and health outcomes. Extrinsic characteristics include the timing and dose of exercise, circadian rhythms, sleep habits, dietary interactions, and medication use, whereas intrinsic factors such as sex, age, hormonal status, race/ethnicity, and genetics are also integral. The molecular transducers of exercise (i.e., genomic/epigenomic, proteomic/post-translational, transcriptomic, metabolic/metabolomic, and lipidomic elements) are considered with respect to variability in physiological and health outcomes. Finally, this review highlights the current challenges that impede our ability to develop effective personalized exercise prescriptions. The Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC) aims to fill significant gaps in the understanding of exercise response variability, yet further investigations are needed to address additional health outcomes across all populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Injury in sport is an inherent risk to participation, and it can have devastating consequences for the athlete, both mentally and physically. Previous research has found that impairments in well-being can increase the risk of injury, and that various forms of mindfulness training and practice can improve well-being and mental health in various populations. HYPOTHESIS Mindfulness would be associated with greater well-being and lower risk of injury. STUDY DESIGN Cohort study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level 3. METHODS A total of 21 female Division I athletes underwent a formal 6-week mindfulness training program and were encouraged to continue mindfulness exercises. The athletes completed daily surveys on their smartphones in relation to mood, muscle readiness (soreness), readiness to train, energy level, daily training load, and whether they had participated in mindfulness training that day. Linear mixed effects models were used to evaluate well-being variables and mindfulness state, and separate mixed effects logistics regression models were used to evaluate injury incidence and wellness variables. RESULTS On days with mindfulness practice, athletes reported higher mood (19.6 [18.8-20.3] vs 19.4 [18.6-20.1, P = 0.03), muscle readiness (18.9 [17.8-20.0] vs 18.6 [17.5-19.6], P = 0.03), readiness to train (78.7 [75.9-81.5] vs 77.4 [74.7-80.2], P < 0.01), and energy level (19.3 [18.6-20.1] vs 18.8 [18.1-19.5, P < 0.01) than on the days when they did not participate in mindfulness training. Mindfulness practice was associated with significantly reduced likelihood of suffering an acute injury the following day (odds ratio, 0.42; 95% CI, 0.42-0.43; P < 0.01). CONCLUSION On an individual level, participation in mindfulness by female collegiate athletes was associated with a dramatic reduction in injury risk the following day. In addition, mindfulness was associated with significantly improved mood, muscle readiness, readiness to train, and energy level. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These findings suggest that mindfulness training in athletes may improve well-being and reduce the risk of injury among high-level athletes.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the prevalence of menstrual irregularities, energy intake, and sleep deprivation among female athletes. Methods A total of 128 female athletes, with an average age of 19.2 ± 1.2 years, participated in the study and tracked their food intake over a three-day period. Menstrual status and sleep duration were assessed using a questionnaire, and psychological anxiety was evaluated using the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). These were measured once during the investigation. The impact of sleep status on state anxiety and daily energy intake was examined using the T-test. A generalized linear model (GLM) with a log link function was employed to investigate the effects of sleep deprivation on the presence of menstrual irregularities. Results As the results of the present study, sleep deprivation significant increased both state and trait anxiety (p < 0.05), as well as affecting energy intake (p < 0.05), particularly protein and carbohydrate intakes (p < 0.05). However, GLM analysis indicated that while sleep deprivation did not directly influence the prevalence of menstrual irregularities (p > 0.05), state anxiety emerged as a significant factor impacting the prevalence of menstrual irregularities (p < 0.05). Conclusions The results of the present study suggest a potential pathway wherein sleep deprivation might elevate state anxiety levels, consequently indirectly contributing to an increase the probability of menstrual irregularities. In conclusion, the results of the presents study provide novels insights suggesting that sleep deprivation might directly increase state anxiety and indirectly affect the prevalence of menstrual irregularities. Hence, decreased sleep duration might be related to mental health issues and the prevalence of menstrual irregularities both significant concerns among female athletes. Future studies will play a crucial role in further elucidating how sleep patterns impact the health and well-being of female athletes.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep is critical to the health, wellbeing and performance of military personnel during basic training. This two-part study evaluated sleep-wake patterns and sleep disturbances in junior soldiers (JS) and infantry recruits in Autumn 2021 (study 1), and non-infantry recruits in spring 2022 (study 2). Methods During studies 1 and 2, validated wearable technology combined with a sleep diary was used to quantify sleep-wake indices, sleep disturbances and perceptions of sleep quality. Sleep diary data was analysed descriptively. A series of repeated-measures ANOVAs examined differences in objective sleep-wake indices. Correlation analysis determined associations between time in bed (TIB) and total sleep time (TST). Results Significant (p < 0.05) differences in most sleep-wake indices were observed between weeks of basic training for all cohorts. Strong positive correlations between TIB and TST were observed for each cohort across basic training (r = 0.681 - 0.970, p < 0.001), with longer TST associated with greater TIB. The mean±SD sleep duration (hours and mins [hm]) for JS (06:22 ± 00:27hm), non-infantry (05:41 ± 00:47hm) and infantry (05:46 ± 00:34hm) recruits across basic training was consistently below national recommendations. The mean±SD bed and wake times for JS (bedtime: 23:01 ± 00:32hm; awake: 05:34 ± 00:10hm), non-infantry (bedtime: 23:38 ± 01:09hm; awake: 04:47 ± 00:58hm), and infantry (bedtime: 23:13 ± 00:29hm; awake: 05:38 ± 00:26hm) recruits varied across weeks of basic training, with over 80% reporting "fairly bad" or "very bad" sleep quality and frequent periods of "dozing off" during daytime activity. The most commonly reported sleep disturbing factors identified during basic training involved: late-night military admin (e.g., ironing, boot cleaning, kit set up etc), early morning wake times, extraneous noise, light and hot room temperatures within the primary sleeping environment, bed/mattress discomfort, muscle soreness and feelings of stress and anxiety. Discussion/Conclusion Our findings contribute to the existing evidence that long-term sleep loss is pervasive during initial military training programmes. The average sleep durations indicate chronic and unrecoverable sleep loss which would be expected to significantly impair physical and cognitive military performance, and increase the risk of injury, illness and attrition rates during basic training. Changes in the design and scheduling of basic training programmes to enable, at the least, minimum sleep recommendations to be met, and to improve sleep hygiene in the primary sleeping environment are warranted.

Abstract
Returning to running postpartum presents challenges such as musculoskeletal pain and pelvic floor dysfunction for some females, but there is little guidance on developing and progressing postpartum training programmes. This study aims to establish expert consensus recommendations on designing and modifying a postpartum return-to-running training programme, highlight costs and access to qualified professionals as potential barriers and discuss clinical, research and sports policy implications.A three-round Delphi survey of clinical and exercise professionals working with postpartum runners was conducted. Round I consisted of open-ended questions related to designing the training plan, modifications based on biopsychosocial factors, key muscle groups to train and referral and payment sources. Rounds II and III involved Likert-scale voting to identify consensus (≥75% agreement).118 participants completed Round I, 107 completed Round II (response rate 90.6%) and 95 completed Round III (response rate 80.5%). Consensus was reached in 42/47 (89%) statements, including recommendations for a period of relative rest, gradual increases in duration and intensity, starting with a walk-run protocol and incorporating strength training. Training should be modified based on musculoskeletal or pelvic symptoms, sleep, mental health, lactation or energy availability concerns. Cost and access to experienced postpartum running professionals were identified as potential barriers for runners to receive care.Consensus recommendations for a postpartum return-to-running programme include an individualised exercise prescription, gradual increases in physical activity, walk-run protocols and targeted muscle strengthening. Further research and improved access to clinical and exercise professionals are needed to inform and facilitate best practices.

Abstract
Respiratory health is a critical determinant of athletic performance, and the utilization of restorative strategies, such as strategic napping, may offer a competitive edge to athletes. This study investigates the effects of nap duration on the respiratory function of young elite athletes who have achieved top rankings national competitions. Participants engage in three test sessions with varying nap durations: no nap (N0), a 25-minute nap (N25), and a 45-minute nap (N45), with a minimum 72-hour interval between sessions. Respiratory parameters including Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio, Peak Expiratory Flow rate (PEF), Forced Expiratory Flow at 25-75% of FVC (FEF25-75%), and Forced Expiratory Time (FET) are assessed. Results reveal a significant enhancement in PEF values following a 45-minute nap (N45) compared to the no-nap control (N0) [F1 - 11=7.356, p =.004, ηp2 = 0.401, (95% CI for difference: -1.56 to - 0.056)], indicating a potential positive influence of napping on maximum expiratory flow rate and, consequently, athletes' respiratory performance. While no significant changes are observed in other respiratory parameters across different nap durations, these findings underscore the potential benefits of strategic napping in optimizing respiratory health in young elite athletes.

Abstract
Introduction Rare studies have been done to investigate the association between dietary intakes of vitamin D and the risk of mental health disorders among athletes. The current study aimed to investigate the association between this vitamin intake and the risk of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders among a group of Iranian physically active adults. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 690 healthy athletes (18-50 years, mean BMI between 20 and 30) in Kashan, Iran. The usual dietary intake of participants was assessed by a 147-item FFQ. Depression was assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory-II (21-item), anxiety by the Beck Anxiety Inventory (21-item), and sleep disorders by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaires. Statistical analyses were done by using SPSS version 18. p values < 0.05 were considered significant. Results No significant association was found between vitamin D dietary intake and risk of depression in the full-adjusted model (OR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.62, 1.51). In contrast, participants at the highest tertile of vitamin D consumption had a 49% lower risk of anxiety than those at the lowest tertile (OR: 0.51, 95%: 0.29, 0.87). Moreover, a significant 46% lower risk of sleep disorders was found among those with the highest intake of vitamin D in comparison to participants with the lowest intake (OR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.37, 0.78). Conclusion We found a significant association between dietary vitamin D intake and reduced risk of anxiety and sleep disorders, but not with depression, in this study. Further prospective studies are recommended for future investigations.

Abstract
Collegiate athletes must satisfy the academic obligations common to all undergraduates, but they have the additional structural and social stressors of extensive practice time, competition schedules, and frequent travel away from their home campus. Clearly such stressors can have negative impacts on both their academic and athletic performances as well as on their health. These concerns are made more acute by recent proposals and decisions to reorganize major collegiate athletic conferences. These rearrangements will require more multi-day travel that interferes with the academic work and personal schedules of athletes. Of particular concern is additional east-west travel that results in circadian rhythm disruptions commonly called jet lag that contribute to the loss of amount as well as quality of sleep. Circadian misalignment and sleep deprivation and/or sleep disturbances have profound effects on physical and mental health and performance. We, as concerned scientists and physicians with relevant expertise, developed this white paper to raise awareness of these challenges to the wellbeing of our student-athletes and their co-travelers. We also offer practical steps to mitigate the negative consequences of collegiate travel schedules. We discuss the importance of bedtime protocols, the availability of early afternoon naps, and adherence to scheduled lighting exposure protocols before, during, and after travel, with support from wearables and apps. We call upon departments of athletics to engage with sleep and circadian experts to advise and help design tailored implementation of these mitigating practices that could contribute to the current and long-term health and wellbeing of their students and their staff members.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Daytime napping is used by athletes as a strategy to supplement night time sleep and aid physical performance. However, no meta-analytical overview regarding the impact of napping following a night of normal sleep (7-9 h) on physical performance is available. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of daytime napping following normal night-time sleep on physical performance in physically active individuals and athletes. METHODS This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Seven electronic databases (i.e., PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, SCIELO, and EBSCOhost) were used to search for relevant studies that investigated the impact of daytime napping, following normal night-time sleep, on physical performance in physically active individuals and athletes, published in any language, and available before September 01, 2022. Studies that included assessments of any physical performance measures were included. QualSyst was used to assess the methodological quality of the studies. RESULTS Of 18 selected articles, 15 were of strong quality and 3 were of moderate quality. Compared with no-nap conditions, physically active individuals and athletes who napped experienced an increase in highest distance (effect size [ES] 1.026; p < 0.001) and total distance (ES 0.737; p < 0.001), and a decrease in fatigue index (ES 0.839, p = 0.008) during the 5-m shuttle run test (5MSRT). However, napping yielded no effect on muscle force (ES 0.175; p = 0.267). No effect of napping was found in one study that measured sprint performance and in two studies that measured performance during the 30-s Wingate test. Two of three studies reported an increase in jump performance after napping. Two of three studies reported an increase in repeated sprints after napping. One study reported an increase in upper-body power performance after napping, and napping was beneficial for endurance performance in one of two studies. CONCLUSION Following normal sleep, napping is beneficial for the performance of the 5MSRT, with no significant effect on muscle force. No firm conclusions can be drawn regarding other physical performance measures due to the limited number of studies.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Secular trend of increasing musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) across all branches of the U.S. Military is a critical limiting factor in the effective and efficient process of preparing military personnel for combat. The need to evaluate functional capacity beyond current physical fitness test (PFT) standards is the key in understanding an individual's risk of noncombat-related injury. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between Functional Movement ScreenTM (FMS) scores, incidence of musculoskeletal injuries, and standardized PFT scores among freshman Cadets during their first 10 weeks of enrollment at a senior military college. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty-two participants (72 male and 10 female participants; mage: 18.2 years) completed the FMS, an institution-specific PFT (2-min maximum pushups, 2-min maximum abdominal crunches, and 1.5 mile timed run), and an Incidence of Injury and Incidence of Pain Questionnaire. Independent t-tests, Spearman's rank correlation coefficients logistic regression analysis, and Receiver Operator Curves were performed to evaluate relationships between the study variables. RESULTS FMS composite and PFT sex-normed total scores were higher in females (16.4, 236.1) than in males (15.0, 204.9). Ninety percent of all females reported injury or pain during the 10-week survey period compared to 48% of males. CONCLUSIONS No significant difference between FMS scores and injury and pain was found within both sex groups. Therefore, use of the composite FMS score as an indicator for risk of injury or to predetermine PFT performance is not recommended for this study's population. The rate of incidence of injury or pain in Cadets during a 10-week enrolment period is high. Females outperformed males in the FMS and PFT and reported higher rates of injury and pain. The utility of the FMS may be limited when substantially scaled for implementation across entire military populations. Future research should evaluate performance associations of the FMS with Army Combat Fitness Test components in a population of equally distributed sex and race.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Integrating the core aspects of sports nutrition knowledge [SNK] into the multidisciplinary team is critical to improving an athlete's performance and well-being. Conducting in-depth interviews with members of the sports-related team is a comprehensive method of gathering information on various aspects of SNK. This qualitative study aimed to examine the opinions and beliefs of stakeholders in athletics regarding the importance of SNK. METHODS Fifteen professional track and field athletes and stakeholders were recruited into the study. Separate in-depth interviews were conducted to collect information within four key themes. Practical difficulties in getting an appropriate meal were included in an additional theme. Thematic analysis was performed using NVIVO v10.0. RESULTS All participants were mindful of the importance of proper food habits for overall athletic outcomes and reported different opinions on meal timing and composition. The opinions on supplements were heterogeneous and both positive and negative claims were reported. Beliefs regarding hydration demonstrated that the cohort was well aware of the significance of adequate hydration plus the signs and consequences of dehydration with many reporting experiences of the negative consequences of dehydration. All respondents reported that both alcohol and smoking may have an adverse impact on performance and health. CONCLUSIONS All respondents emphasized the importance of proper food habits for sports performance and well-being, but also identified barriers to optimizing nutrition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Athlete Sleep Behavior Questionnaire (ASBQ) was designed to identify maladaptive sleep practices among athletes. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the internal consistency and the test-retest reliability coefficients of the ASBQ. METHODS A systematic search across 10 databases from inception of the ASBQ to August 2023 was performed. Publications that reported estimates of internal consistency and/or test-retest reliability of the ASBQ were included. A random-effects model was employed to estimate the overall reliability measures of the ASBQ. RESULTS Meta-analytic results demonstrated a good level of internal consistency within the ASBQ, evidenced by a Cronbach's alpha of 0.73 (95% CI: 0.63 to 0.80). This suggests a modest correlation among the questionnaire items, supporting its reliability as an effective measure of sleep behavior. In terms of test-retest reliability, our meta-analysis revealed a very good degree of consistency (ICC = 0.88; 95% CI: 0.87 to 0.89), suggesting that the ASBQ can serve as an instrument for monitoring and evaluating changes in athletes' sleep behavior over time. No evidence of publication bias was identified. CONCLUSION While the ASBQ demonstrates a moderate level of internal consistency, its test-retest reliability suggests that it can serve as an instrument for longitudinal assessments of athletes' sleep behavior. Future studies focusing on refining the ASBQ to optimize its internal consistency and validate its applicability across diverse athletic populations are warranted.

Abstract
Sleep is important for not only general health but also for lowering injury risk and maintaining athletic performance. Sleep disorders are prevalent in athletes, and taking a sleep history, evaluating sleep quality, and addressing other related factors including mental health are essential in diagnosing and understanding sleep disorders. Other methods such as polysomnography, actigraphy, and sheet sensors can also be used. Treatment options for sleep disorders include sleep hygiene, cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, and addressing contributing factors. For athletes, sleep can also be affected by factors such as travel fatigue and jet lag, which should be taken into consideration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During periods of high-volume vigorous exercise, United States Marine Corps recruits often experience musculoskeletal injuries. While the program of instruction (POI) for basic training is a defined training volume, the total workload of boot camp, including movements around the base, is unknown. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to quantify the daily total workload, energy expenditure, and sleep during basic recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego. METHODS Eighty-four male recruits from MCRD San Diego wore wrist wearable physiological monitors to capture their complete workload (mileage from steps), energy expenditure, and sleep throughout the 10-week boot camp. RESULTS Marine recruits traveled an average of 11.5±3.4 miles per day (M±SD), expended 4105±823 kcal per day, and slept an average of 5 : 48±1 : 06 hours and minutes per night. While the POI designates a total of 46.3 miles of running and hiking, the actual daily average miles yielded approximately 657.6±107.2 miles over the 10-week boot camp. CONCLUSION Recruit training requires high physical demand and time under tension due to the cumulative volume of movements around base in addition to the POI planned physical training.

Abstract
Objective The impact of sleep deprivation on the physiological determinants of explosive torque production remains poorly understood. We aimed at determining the acute effects of 24 hours of sleep deprivation on the sequential rate of torque development (RTD) obtained during plantar flexion through maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC). Materials and Methods The study included 14 healthy-young adults (8 men and 6 women). The participants visited the laboratory on 2 different occasions: without and with 24 hours of sleep deprivation. In each session, the subjects were tested for RTD of the plantar flexors with concomitant recordings of the electromyographic (EMG) amplitude of the soleus over the following time intervals: 0 to 30, 30 to 50, 50 to 100, and 100 to 150 ms. Results Sleep deprivation did not affect peak RTD (without sleep deprivation: 283.3 ± 111.6 N.m.s -1 versus with sleep deprivation: 294.9 ± 99.2 N.m.s -1 ; p > 0.05) of plantar flexion. The sequential values of RTD, as well as the normalized amplitude of the soleus EMG, remained similar between both conditions (p > 0.05). Discussion In conclusion, we found that 24 hours of sleep deprivation do not affect muscle activation, nor explosive torque production throughout the torque-time curve. Thus, exercise performance and daily functionality in tasks involving rapid torque development might remain well preserved after 24 hours of acute sleep deprivation.

Purpose The Athlete Sleep Behavior Questionnaire (ASBQ) is an 18-item self-reported questionnaire that can be used to screen for sleep disorders in athletes and assess environmental, behavioral, and sports-related factors along with sleep disorders. This study aimed to analyze the reliability and validity of the ASBQ translated into Japanese (ASBQ-J). Patients and Methods 111 female collegiate athletes completed both the initial test and retest. Independent variables were what kind of sports they perform, level as an athlete, grade (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior), and age. The reliability of the survey was assessed using Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation, and Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to determine the correlation between the total ASBQ scores and three components which were routine/environmental, behavioral, and sports factors. Results A total of 37.8% of athletes had ASBQ scores equal or less than 36 indicating good sleep. However, 19.8% of athletes scored more than 42, indicating poor sleep. Cronbach alpha was 0.62 and 0.65 for test and retest, respectively. Intraclass correlation was 0.78 (P < 0.01), indicating sufficient internal consistency and test-retest validity. Mean ASBQ scores were 38.5 ± 5.0 and 37.0 ± 6.5 for test and retest, respectively, and it was not significantly different between the two groups (P = 0.37). The correlation coefficients between the ASBQ-J and component scores were all statistically significant (all P < 0.01). Conclusion ASBQ-J is a reliable questionnaire for assessing sleep disorders in athletes whose primary language is Japanese.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Available evidence indicates that ketone bodies may improve sleep quality. Therefore, we determined whether ketone ester (KE) intake could counteract sleep disruptions induced by strenuous exercise. METHODS Ten well-trained cyclists with good sleep quality participated in a randomized crossover design consisting of two experimental sessions each involving a morning endurance training and an evening high-intensity interval training ending 1 h before sleep, after which polysomnography was performed overnight. Postexercise and 30 min before sleeping time, subjects received either 25 g of KE (EX KE ) or a placebo drink (EX CON ). A third session without exercise but with placebo supplements (R CON ) was added to evaluate the effect of exercise per se on sleep. RESULTS Blood d -β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations transiently increased to ~3 mM postexercise and during the first part of the night in EX KE but not in EX CON or R CON . Exercise significantly reduced rapid eye movement sleep by 26% ( P = 0.001 vs R CON ) and increased wakefulness after sleep onset by 95% ( P = 0.004 vs R CON ). Interestingly, KE improved sleep efficiency by 3% ( P = 0.040 vs EX CON ) and counteracted the exercise-induced decrease in rapid eye movement sleep ( P = 0.011 vs EX CON ) and the increase in wakefulness after sleep onset ( P = 0.009 vs EX CON ). This was accompanied by a KE-induced increase in dopamine excretion ( P = 0.033 vs EX CON ), which plays a pivotal role in sleep regulation. In addition, exercise increased sleep spindle density by 36% ( P = 0.005 vs R CON ), suggesting an effect on neural plasticity processes during sleep. CONCLUSIONS These data indicate that KE ingestion improves sleep efficiency and quality after high-intensity exercise. We provide preliminary evidence that this might result from KE-induced increases in dopamine signaling.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lower limb biomechanics, including asymmetry, are frequently monitored to determine sport performance level and injury risk. However, contributing factors extend beyond biomechanical and asymmetry measures to include psychological, sociological, and environmental factors. Unfortunately, inadequate research has been conducted using holistic biopsychosocial models to characterize sport performance and injury risk. Therefore, this scoping review summarized the research landscape of studies concurrently assessing measures of lower limb biomechanics, asymmetry, and introspective psychological state (e.g., pain, fatigue, perceived exertion, stress, etc.) in healthy, competitive athletes. METHODS A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science Core Collections was designed and conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Fifty-one articles were included in this review. RESULTS Significant relationships between biomechanics (k = 22 studies) or asymmetry (k = 20 studies) and introspective state were found. Increased self-reported pain was associated with decreased range of motion, strength, and increased lower limb asymmetry. Higher ratings of perceived exertion were related to increased lower limb asymmetry, self-reported muscle soreness, and worse jump performance. Few studies (k = 4) monitored athletes longitudinally throughout one or more competitive season(s). CONCLUSION This review highlights the need for concurrent analysis of introspective, psychological state, and biomechanical asymmetry measures along with longitudinal research to understand the contributing factors to sport performance and injury risk from biopsychosocial modeling. In doing so, this framework of biopsychosocial preventive and prognostic patient-centered practices may provide an actionable means of optimizing health, well-being, and sport performance in competitive athletes.

Abstract
This perspective article aims to discuss the usefulness of tools that can assist tennis professionals effectively manage the well-being of their players. This includes identifying and monitoring meaningful metrics (i.e., training load, training intensity, heart rate variability), as well as careful planning of training and competition schedules with appropriate recovery periods. The use of innovative training methods (i.e., repeated-sprint training in hypoxia and heat training), and proper dietary practices, along with biometric assessment for young players, represents should be considered. Adopting a holistic approach to decision-making about training and competition, balancing both health and performance considerations, is crucial for tennis players and their support teams. More research is needed to refine best practices for enhancing tennis performance while prioritizing the well-being of players.

Abstract
Optimal sleep health is a critical component to high-level performance. In populations such as the military, public service (eg, firefighters), and health care, achieving optimal sleep health is difficult and subsequently deficiencies in sleep health may lead to performance decrements. However, advances in sleep monitoring technologies and mitigation strategies for poor sleep health show promise for further ecological scientific investigation within these populations. The current review briefly outlines the relationship between sleep health and performance as well as current advances in behavioral and technological approaches to improving sleep health for performance.

Abstract
Irish dance is growing in popularity, evolving to a more athletic and demanding dance style. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review, previously registered with PROSPERO, to identify the prevalence, incidence, and the injury pattern among Irish dancers and analyse the associated risk factors. Six online databases and two dance-specific science publications were searched systematically. Studies were included if the patterns of injuries among Irish dancers were evaluated or the factors associated with injury were analysed, published in English or Portuguese, in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Four reviewers assessed the quality and level of evidence using the Downs and Black criteria and a modified Oxford Centre of Evidence-Based Medicine 2009 model, respectively. Eleven articles were included, eight of Level 3c (cross-sectional) and three of Level 3b (prospective). Mean DB percentage score was 63% ± 7.2%. Prevalence ranged from 72.2% to 92.6%, affecting mostly the foot/ankle complex. Only two articles reported incidence, which ranged from 3.4 to 10.6 injuries/1000 h danced depending on injury definition. Psychological factors, elite level, and insufficient/poor sleep were associated with musculoskeletal injury. Injury prevalence and incidence is high in Irish dancers, with the foot and ankle being more affected. Due to heterogeneity in injury definitions, methods, and populations, along with the need for improvement in studies quality, recommendations were made for future research.

Abstract
Background: Athletes often experience poor sleep quality due to stress, altitude exposure, travel across different time zones, and pre-competition nervousness. Coaches use daytime naps to counteract the negative effects of fragmented nighttime sleep. Napping before competitions has also been used to enhance performance in athletes without sleep problems, with mixed results in previous studies, particularly for endurance performance. Thus, we investigated the effects of napping after partial sleep deprivation (PSD) on endurance performance and wakefulness in athletes. Methods: We recruited 12 healthy and trained participants (seven female and five male) for a randomized crossover study design. The participants underwent two test sessions: a five-hour night of sleep without a nap (noNap) and a five-hour night of sleep with a 30-min nap opportunity (Nap30). Participants recorded their sleep-wake rhythm one week before and during the study using the Consensus Sleep Diary-Core and the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire to examine their circadian rhythm type. We quantified PSD and the nap with pupillography (pupil unrest index, PUI), a subjective level of sleepiness questionnaire (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, KSS), and polysomnography. After each night, participants performed a maximal cycling ergometry test to determine time to exhaustion (TTE) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO 2max). Results: Participants had an average sleep duration of 7.2 ± 0.7 h and were identified as moderately morning types (n = 5), neither type (n = 5), and moderately evening types (n = 2). There was a significant difference in both sleepiness parameters between the two conditions, with the PUI (p = 0.015) and KSS (p ≤ 0.01) significantly decreased at 5 h and nap compared with only 5 h of sleep. The PUI (p ≤ 0.01) and KSS (p ≤ 0.01) decreased significantly from before to after the nap. However, there was no significant difference in physical exercise test results between the conditions for TTE (p = 0.367) or VO 2max (p = 0.308). Conclusions: Our results suggest that napping after light PSD does not significantly influence endurance performance. We conclude that aerobic performance is a multidimensional construct, and napping after PSD may not enhance it. However, napping is an effective method to increase wakefulness and vigilance, which can be beneficial for sports competitions.

Abstract
People can be classified into three chronotypes (CT): morning-type (M-type), Neither-type (N-type) and Evening-type (E-type). M-types perform better in the morning, E-types in the evening. It seems that bad sleep worsens physical performance. The impact of sleep and CT on specific sports and populations is unclear. Therefore, we wanted to assess agility, strength and endurance in young soccer players in relation to their sleep and chronotype. 58 players (13-19 years) were recruited. Sleep and CT were assessed by questionnaires. The physical trial was performed at 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and included three tests to determine agility, strength and endurance. The sample was classified by CT as M-types (n = 11), N-types (n = 29) and E-types (n = 18). Furthermore, they were categorized as people with Good Sleep/Wake quality (GSW, n = 28) and people with Bad Sleep/Wake quality (BSW, n = 30). Comparing the three CTs in the aerobic test, M-types performed better in the morning (p = 0.01), while E-types in the evening (p < 0.001). GSW performed better than BSW (p = 0.019) in the aerobic test in the p.m. session. These results underline the difference in aerobic power between M-and E-types during the morning and evening session; moreover, they show a difference in p.m. aerobic performance according to sleep quality.

Abstract
Caffeine is a trimethylxanthine found in coffee and several other foods and beverages. Its stimulatory effects make it an interesting strategy to boost performance for athletic populations. Scientific evidence supports its efficacy to improve high-intensity endurance exercise, explosive and high-intensity efforts, resistance exercise, team sports and combat sports, though individual variation in the ergogenic response to caffeine exists. Supplementation can be taken in many forms including dissolved in water, via capsules, coffee, energy drinks and caffeinated gum; ingestion via capsules, dissolved in water or in caffeinated gum appear to be most effective. Variability in the exercise response following caffeine supplementation may be explained by genetic factors or habitual caffeine consumption. Caffeine is an excellent supplement for athletes looking to improve their exercise performance, though some consideration of side-effects and impact on sleep are warranted.

Abstract
The outbreak and pandemic of COVID-19 forced people into extreme isolation and social distancing, with significant limitations on various activity sectors, including sports. This study aimed to assess the psychological health status of athletes during sports lockdown. Additionally, we intend to verify the mediating role of sleep disorders in stress perception and subjective happiness. Our sample was composed of 1492 Portuguese athletes from eight different team sports. During sports lockdown, athletes were found to have high stress levels and low subjective happiness levels and experience sleep disorders. Finally, these results conclude that sports lockdowns harm athletes’ psychological health and well-being. Pay cuts to athletes are an extra stress factor that exacerbate these adverse effects on psychological health. Finally, sleep is a mediator variable between stress perception and subjective happiness levels. This study’s significant contributions, limitations, and future directions are discussed in the conclusion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the rising concern of inadequate sleep, critical analysis is needed for the presence of sleep problems in diverse populations. Research has shown that college athletes may be one such population at risk for sleep disturbances. Poor sleep may lead to physiological, psychological, and cognitive deficits that can impact college athletes academically and athletically. This investigation was performed to examine the relationship of age, sex, and history of concussion on sleep disturbance in college athletes. METHODS A total of 191 collegiate athletes between the ages of 18-26 from a single academic NCAA institution in the Rocky Mountain region of the USA, consented to participate in the study. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ). Results were analyzed using SPSS Version 27. RESULTS Primary results revealed that female athletes reported higher sleep disturbance scores when compared to males (U=3643.0, P=0.016). Self-reported sleep disturbances when traveling for sport were higher for females (<inf>X</inf>(1) = 23.800, P<0.001). Males were also less likely to report daytime dysfunction when traveling for sport (<inf>X</inf>(1) =22.988, P<0.001). Sleep disturbance had a significant association with age (<inf>X</inf>(1) =4.145, P=0.042), with older participants (20+ years of age) reporting greater sleep disturbance. Concussion history did not associate with sleep disturbance in the present study. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that sophomore or older female may be at higher risk for sleep disturbances. Clarifying sex-specific sleep health and understanding the role of age and academic class is crucial to enhance and personalize interventions.

Interaction predictors of self-perception menstrual symptoms and influence of the menstrual cycle on physical performance of physically active women. Eur J Appl Physiol 2023; 123:601-607. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the physical performance, self-perception menstrual symptoms, of physically active eumenorrheic women with endogenous ovarian cycle in two phases of the menstrual cycle. METHODS Twenty-six women participated in the study (age 25.8 ± 3.9 years; height 1.64 ± 0.58 m; mass 64 ± 12.32 kg; menarche 11.69 ± 1.28 years). Assessments were performed in two phases of the menstrual cycle (MC), Early-Follicular Phase (FP) and Mid-Luteal Phase (LP), performance was assessed through total time to exhaustion (TTE), complete stages (CE), and final speed (FE), through a graded exercise test (GXT). Information on the participants' menstrual symptoms and their perceptions of the influence of MC on their performance were also collected. Data normality was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk test. Paired analyses were conducted (t test or Wilcoxon) to examine the responses between the menstrual phases. The interaction analysis of symptom predictors was performed by multiple linear regression, with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS There was no significant difference in physical performance between the phases during the GXT in TTE (mean difference 8.50; 95% CI - 11.99 to 42; p = 0.36). During FP, women with heavy flow had shorter performance in the GXT (t = - 2.5; p = 0.01), demonstrating an r2 = 0.32. In LP, for the women who reported not having the perception of the influence of the menstrual cycle on exercise, the total test time was longer (t = 2.55; p = 0.01), with an r2 = 0.45. CONCLUSION There was no difference in physical performance between FP and LP. However, menstrual flow intensity and perception of cycle interference demonstrated a decrease in TTE.

Abstract
CONTEXT Sleep serves many important functions for athletes, particularly in the processes of learning, memory, recovery, and cognition. OBJECTIVES Define the sleep parameters of Paralympic athletes and identify the instruments used to assess and monitor sleep Paralympic athletes. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION This systematic review was carried out based on the PRISMA guidelines. The survey was conducted in April 2020, the searches were carried out again in September 2021 to check whether there were new scientific publications in the area of sleep and Paralympic sport, searches were performed in the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, Virtual Health Library (BIREME), and SciELO. This systematic review has included studies that investigated at least one of the following sleep parameters: total sleep time, sleep latency, sleep efficiency, number of awakenings, quality of sleep, daytime sleepiness, and chronotype; the participants were comprised of athletes with disabilities. Studies published at any time in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, were included. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS Data extraction and study selection were performed by 2 researchers independently, and a third author was consulted as necessary. The search returned a total of 407 studies. Following the screening based on exclusion and inclusion criteria, a total of 13 studies were considered. Paralympic athletes have a low amount (7.06 h) of sleep with poor quality and sleep latency (28.05 min), and 57.2% have daytime sleepiness, with the majority belonging to the indifferent chronotype (53, 5%). Moreover, 11 studies assess sleep using subjective instruments (questionnaires), and 2 studies used an objective instrument (actigraphy). CONCLUSIONS Sleep disorders are common among Paralympic athletes, poor sleep quality and quantity, and high rates of daytime sleepiness. Subjective methods are most commonly used to assess sleep.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of this case report was to describe the sleep responses in a male combat sport athlete, who was engaging in both chronic (CWL) and acute (AWL) weight loss practices in order to reduce body mass for a national competition. Methods During the first seven weeks of training (Phases 1 and 2), the athlete adhered to a daily energy intake (EI) equating to their resting metabolic rate (1700 kcal·day-1) followed by a reduction in EI (915-300 kcal·day-1) in the 5 days before weighing in (Phase 3). Nocturnal sleep was monitored throughout the 8-week training period using wristwatch actigraphy and frequent measurements of body mass/composition, daily exercise energy expenditure and training load (TL) were taken. Results The athlete was in a state of low energy availability (LEA) during the entire training period. There was a very large decrease in LEA status during phase 3 compared with phases 1 and 2 (3 vs. 20 kcal·kgFFM·day-1) and there was a small decrease in TL during phase 3 compared with phase 2 (410 vs. 523 AU). The athlete's sleep efficiency increased throughout the training period, but total sleep time displayed a small to moderate decrease in phase 3 compared with phases 1 and 2 (386 vs. 429 and 430 min). However, correlational analysis demonstrated trivial to small, non-significant relationships between sleep characteristics and the athlete's LEA status and TL. Conclusion These findings suggest that CWL and AWL practices that cause fluctuations in LEA and TL may be implemented without compromising the sleep of combat sport athletes.

Abstract
Technological advances in sleep monitoring have seen an explosion of devices used to gather important sleep metrics. These devices range from instrumented 'smart pyjamas' through to at-home polysomnography devices. Alongside these developments in sleep technologies, there have been concomitant increases in sleep monitoring in athletic populations, both in the research and in practical settings. The increase in sleep monitoring in sport is likely due to the increased knowledge of the importance of sleep in the recovery process and performance of an athlete, as well as the well-reported challenges that athletes can face with their sleep. This narrative review will discuss: (1) the importance of sleep to athletes; (2) the various wearable tools and technologies being used to monitor sleep in the sport setting; (3) the role that sleep tracking devices may play in gathering information about sleep; (4) the reliability and validity of sleep tracking devices; (5) the limitations and cautions associated with sleep trackers; and, (6) the use of sleep trackers to guide behaviour change in athletes. We also provide some practical recommendations for practitioners working with athletes to ensure that the selection of such devices and technology will meet the goals and requirements of the athlete.

Abstract
Recently, there has been an increase in awareness about mental illness, especially among professional athletes. This has brought to focus the important roles that sports psychiatrists and other allied health professionals play in professional sports. It has also exposed the limitations of sports psychiatry, especially the shortage of sports psychiatrists. Professional athletes are subjected to multiple stressors during their careers, resulting in significant mental health outcomes. If not adequately addressed, stress can cause performance slumps and poorer outcomes, which in turn exacerbates stress in a vicious cycle. We present the case of a former male athlete with multiple physical, somatic, and psychosocial stressors that predisposed him to develop mental illness. This case highlights the potential consequences of a lack of early recognition and management of physical and psychosocial stressors in athletes, which can contribute to psychological illness and potentially lead to adverse medical outcomes such as repeat hospitalization and homelessness.

Abstract
Purpose of Review Sleep is an essential human behavior that plays a key role in proper biopsychosocial development as well as short- and long-term biological, physical, psychological, and cognitive health. Sleep plays a key role in athletic performance, influencing an athlete's ability to train, recover, and perform, as well as their overall wellness. Over the recent decade, the awareness of sleep's import has penetrated just about every professional sport domain. The purpose of the review was to identify and synthesize the literature published within the past 5 years (2018-2022) that relates to sleep and performance in professional athletes. Literature related to nonprofessional, high-level athletes (e.g., collegiate; Olympic) was omitted as well as those associated with non-traditional professional sports (e.g., eSports). Recent Findings Results from 38 articles were incorporated into this review, which covered (1) the sleep's role in the training, physical injury prevention and recovery, competitive performance, and mental health of professional athletes, (2) common sleep problems and disorders in professional athletes, and (3) the impact of unique challenges from training, travel, competition, and other factors on sleep health. Additionally, we provide an orientation to utilized strategies and interventions to assist with sleep health in professional athletes, as well as conclude with a commentary on critical steps forward. Summary Sleep plays a critically important role in the training, recovery, performance, and overall wellness of professional athletes. Professional athletes are vulnerable to a variety of sleep-related problems and disorders, due to unique factors related to training, travel, and competition, among other factors. Improved, standardized research methodology and partnerships between professional athletes, coaches, teams, and organizations and researchers are necessary to advance the knowledge of sleep and performance in professional athletes, including identifying sport-specific differences and variation across individual characteristics, as well as developing individualizable, dynamic, and appropriate interventions for improving sleep health among professional athletes.

Abstract
The aim of this study was two-fold: (i) analyze the variation of kinematic measures between using preferred and non-preferred legs while braking during the 5-0-5 change of direction test; and (ii) test the relationships between kinematic measures, and change-of-direction deficit (CODD). A cross-sectional study using twenty adult male soccer players (21.6 ± 2.0 years; 73.2 ± 6.1 kg; 174.8 ± 4.5 cm) was employed. Players performed three repetitions of the 5-0-5 test using each leg during the braking phase. Players have used the Polar Team Pro to obtain the kinematic measures of peak speed, peak acceleration, and peak deceleration. Additionally, the CODD was also obtained using single-beamed photocells. Comparisons revealed a significantly greater peak acceleration (+ 0.22 m/s2; p < 0.001) and deceleration (+ 0.17 m/s2; p = 0.004) for the non-preferred leg. There were no significant correlations were found between CODD and peak accelerations (r = - 0.014, [- 0.193; 0.166]), peak decelerations (r = - 0.052, [- 0.229; 0.128]) or peak speed (r = 0.118, [- 0.063; 0.291]). This study revealed that preferred and non-preferred leg must be analyzed differently since they are different in the kinematic variables. However, CODD seems independent of leg preference and the kinematic measures of a 5-0-5 change of direction test.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungLeistungssportlerinnen und Leistungssportler sind hohen physischen und psychischen Anforderungen ausgesetzt, um optimale Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Dafür ist auch die Funktion der Regenerationsphase wichtig, zu der maßgeblich ein erholsamer Schlaf beiträgt. Es gibt jedoch Hinweise, dass bei Leistungssportlerinnen und Leistungssportlern aufgrund verschiedener Belastungen im Rahmen des Trainings und der Wettkämpfe gehäuft eine Insomniesymptomatik auftreten kann. Zur objektiven Untersuchung der Schlafstruktur, Schlafqualität und Funktion des kardialen autonomen Tonus wurden Leistungssporttreibende (LS) und eine Gruppe ebenfalls gesunder Kontrollen (GK) mit einer vereinfachten ambulanten Schlafmessung untersucht.Es wurde in der Gruppe LS bei n = 12 Probanden (Alter 25,1 ± 4,3 Jahre) und in der Gruppe GK bei n = 17 Probanden (Alter 26,1 ± 3,2 Jahre) jeweils weiblichen und männlichen Geschlechts erfolgreich im häuslichen Umfeld eine vereinfachte Schlafmessung einschließlich 1‑Kanal-EKG (SOMNOtouch™) durchgeführt. Mittels Fragebögen wurden die Tagesschläfrigkeit (Epworth Sleepiness Scale, ESS), Insomnieschwere (Insomnia Severity Index, ISI) und Symptome für Schlafapnoe (Aktualisierter STOP-Bang-Fragebogen, aSBF) erhoben. Es wurden visuell die Schlafstadien gescort und aus dem EKG mittels Zeitreihenanalyse Parameter der Herzfrequenz und Herzfrequenzvariabilität (HRV) ausgewertet.Es traten keine Unterschiede zwischen den Gruppen LS und GK hinsichtlich der ESS und aSBF auf, jedoch war die ISI in der Gruppe LS gegenüber GK erhöht (5,7 ± 4,1 vs. 2,4 ± 2,0; p < 0,02). In Auswertung der Schlafstruktur gab es keine Unterschiede für die Einschlaflatenz (ESL), Gesamtschlafzeit (TST), Schlafeffizienz (SE) sowie für die prozentualen Anteile von Leicht- (N1 + N2), Tief- (N3) und REM-Schlaf (REM), jedoch war die Bettzeit (TIB) in der Gruppe LS erhöht (503,2 ± 52,7 vs. 445,5 ± 45,4 min; p < 0,02). In der Gruppe LS waren gegenüber der Gruppe GK die mittlere nächtliche Herzfrequenz verringert (48,5 ± 6,8 vs. 56,1 ± 5,4; p < 0,01) sowie die HRV-Parameter HRV-Standardabweichung (HRV-SD) (166,0 ± 33,2 vs. 138,2 ± 38,7; p < 0,04), HRV-SD1 (78,8 ± 11,7 vs. 63,2 ± 36,5; p < 0,01) und HRV-SD2 (220,6 ± 48,0 vs. 183,8 ± 45,8; p < 0,05) erhöht.In der von uns untersuchte Gruppe von Leistungssportlerinnen und Leistungssportlern gibt es Anhaltspunkte für eine leichte Insomnie, wobei die objektiv gemessene Schlafstruktur sich nicht von der gesunder Kontrollen unterscheidet. Dabei ist die TST, mit einem Mittelwert von 6,8 h sowohl in der Gruppe LS als auch in GK, geringer als die von den Fachgesellschaften American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), Sleep Research Society (SRS) und National Sleep Foundation (NSF) empfohlene Schlafdauer für junge Erwachsene. Dagegen war die kardiale autonome Regulation im Schlaf in der Gruppe LS signifikant besser als in der Gruppe GK und ist in Übereinstimmung mit Befunden aus 24-Stunden-Holter-EKG-Studien. Die Entwicklung objektiver, mobiler und belastungsarmer Messverfahren vereinfacht die Erfassung der Schlafstruktur und charakteristischer vegetativer Parameter und könnte zunehmend im personalisierten Gesundheits- und Leistungsmanagement bei Leistungssporttreibenden eingesetzt werden.

Abstract
Physical performance could be negatively affected by sleep deficiency and fatigue. The present study assesses the role of sleep quality, fatigue and motivation on cardiovascular performance (VO2peak, Wmax, and HRmax) in a sample of active young subjects. The current study is a cross-sectional design. Ninety-six university students (males 54.2%; 21.5 ± 2.9 yrs) completed an incremental exercise test on a bicycle ergometer. Sleep, fatigue, and motivation were assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and two visual analogue scales, respectively. Differences in VO2peak, Wmax, HRmax, self-perceived fatigue and motivation were compared between good and bad sleepers and sleep duration >/<7.5 h, while regression analysis defined the predictors of VO2peak, Wmax, and HRmax. In the male sample, good and bad sleepers' differences were significant only for self-perceived fatigue (p = 0.04). The female sample showed no statistically significant differences between good and bad sleepers and different sleep durations. In the male sample, linear regression analysis showed a significant inverse correlation between Wmax and the PSQI score (-0.4, p = 0.004). The stepwise regression model indicated that sleep (β = -0.3, p = 0.02) was a significant predictor of VO2peak in males accounting for 20% of the variance, whereas physical performance seems more affected by fatigue (β = -0.4, p = 0.03) in females. In conclusion, chronic inadequate and self-reported sleep quality seems to be one of the factors compromising cardiovascular performance in males.

Abstract
The tendency for musculoskeletal complaints, injuries, and traumas remains significant among Para athletes. The aim of the study was to identify and verify the variables that impact the incidence and location of musculoskeletal pain in elite athletes with disabilities. It was assumed, that the type of disability and not the type of sport, or the type of injuries and traumas is the crucial determinant of the prevalence and location of musculoskeletal pain in Para athletes. A direct-participatory observation method was used in the study including both subjective (surveys questionnaires) and objective (anthropometric) methods of assessment. The study included 35 male and female elite Para athletes from the Polish national team (sitting volleyball [SG1: n = 21], para swimming [SG2 = 14]). Both groups of Para athletes mostly reported pain in the neck (37%), and the lower back (34%). The Spearman's rank-order correlation showed several large inversely proportional relationships between somatic parameters and the values in the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire from the last 7 days (NMQ-7) for SG2 and some moderate to large correlations between body adiposity index (BAI) and the prevalence of injuries, the total number of rehabilitation sessions, the number of humeral joint and fingers rehabilitation sessions, breaks from training over 4 weeks in SG1. In both groups relationships were found between the duration of Paralympic training and the number of injuries and rehabilitation sessions (R = -0.4; P < .02) and between the exclusion from training for less 4 and over 4 weeks (R = -0.4; P < .03). The age of the Para athletes correlated with the NMQ-7 (wrists) (R = 0.4; P < .01). Both duration of disability and the type and severity of the disability may be crucial determinants of the prevalence and location of pain in the musculoskeletal system in Para athletes. Sport-specific training seems to induce specific musculoskeletal complaints.

Abstract
Sleep disorders commonly afflict infants, children, and adolescents and have a significant adverse impact on them and their families, sometimes to a severe degree. They can cause immediate stress and suffering and long-term loss of opportunities and potential. Many of these disorders can be well managed by the psychologist and often one is required, either as the sole provider or as an integral part of a team. Sleep disorders have a bidirectional interplay with mental health disorders. The patient may therefore present initially to the psychologist, primary care provider, or the sleep medicine specialist.
