Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate bilateral axial length (AL) growth patterns and interactions of myopic eyes in anisometropic children during unilateral orthokeratology (OK) treatment in their singularly myopic eyes (Eyes1), followed by bilateral treatment when their second eyes (Eyes2) developed myopia. METHODS This study enrolled 94 eyes from 47 anisometropes (20 males). All patients had undergone monocular OK treatment for > 1 year followed by binocular treatment for > 1 year. Axial growth of Eyes1 and Eyes2 during the first year of monocular treatment (Stage 1), average annual axial elongation during the monocular treatment period, and axial elongation during the first year of binocular treatment (Stage 2) were respectively termed: S1E1 and S1E2, Annual E1 and Annual E2, and S2E1 and S2E2. Associations between AL growth and age, sex, interval time, and ocular parameters were analysed using correlation and generalised estimating equation (GEE) analysis. RESULTS During the monocular period, Eyes1 showed less AL growth (S1E1: 0.05 ± 0.18 mm; Annual E1: 0.05 ± 0.21 mm) than Eyes2 (S1E2: 0.51 ± 0.24 mm; Annual E2: 0.52 ± 0.25 mm) (all p < 0.001). During the binocular period, there was no significant difference between S2E1 and S2E2(0.21 ± 0.14 mm v. 0.19 ± 0.17 mm, p = 0.951). Between monocular and binocular periods, Eyes1 had significantly higher S2E1 compared to S1E1 and Annual E1 (both p < 0.001), and Eyes2 had significantly lower S2E2 than S1E2 and Annual E2 (both p < 0.001). In the GEE model, spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and between periods interval time showed independently significant associations with AL growth after adjusting for age and sex. CONCLUSION Orthokeratology can significantly control AL growth in unilateral myopia. AL growth of the initial myopic OK-treated eyes accelerated relative to the monocular period when contralateral eyes developed myopia and assumed OK treatment. During the binocular treatment phase, OK lenses showed moderate and comparable effects on AL retardation across both eyes.

Abstract
Scleral hypoxia is considered a trigger in scleral remodeling-induced myopia. Identifying differentially expressed molecules within the sclera is essential for understanding the mechanism of myopia. We developed a scleral fibroblast hypoxia model and conducted RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. RNA interference technology was then applied to knock down targeted genes with upregulated expression, followed by an analysis of COLLAGEN I protein level. Microarray data analysis showed that the expression of Adamts1 and Adamts5 were upregulated in fibroblasts under hypoxia (t-test, p < 0.05). Western blot analysis confirmed increased protein levels of ADAMTS1 and ADAMTS5, and a concurrent decrease in COLLAGEN I in hypoxic fibroblasts. The knockdown of either Adamts1 or Adamts5 in scleral fibroblasts under hypoxia resulted in an upregulation of COLLAGEN I. Moreover, a form-deprivation myopia (FDM) mouse model was established for validation. The sclera tissue from FDM mice exhibited increased levels of ADAMTS1 and ADAMTS5 protein and a decrease in COLLAGEN I, compared to controls. The study suggests that Adamts1 and Adamts5 may be involved in scleral remodeling induced by hypoxia and the development of myopia.

Abstract
Background: Myopia (also known as nearsightedness), a prevalent refractive error, occurs when parallel rays of light converge in front of the retina, resulting in blurry distance vision. Recently, there has been a marked rise in myopia among the global population. The absence of effective methods of controlling the progression of this visual defect prompts the search for new preventive and therapeutic options. The impact of diet and lifestyle on the progression of myopia is still not fully understood. Therefore, our aim was to examine how these factors might affect the advancement of myopia, based on the existing literature. Methods: This manuscript was prepared through an extensive literature review conducted from June 2022 to September 2024. We searched for pertinent research articles using reputable databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. We included all types of publications, with a special focus on the newest ones. Results: Despite far-reaching examination, the relationship between these factors and myopia control remains inconclusive with varying degrees of evidence supporting their roles. Conclusions: However, promoting a healthy lifestyle, particularly increasing physical activity and outdoor time, is essential. Additionally, emerging research suggests that maintaining a balanced diet is important due to the potential impact of certain nutrients on myopia development. Ophthalmologists should also guide parents on the alternative correction methods beyond single vision glasses, especially for rapidly progressing cases. With the rising prevalence of myopia in children, further research is necessary.

Abstract
The use of atropine is currently one of the most effective methods used to prevent myopia progression. The purpose of this study was to investigate atropine adherence in preschool children with myopia, to explain the context of treatment through caregivers, and to identify barriers and facilitators of using atropine. We conducted in-depth interviews with 60 caregivers of children (parents, kindergarten teachers and nurses) in four different areas ranging from large cities to rural areas in Taiwan. Based on the social ecological theory model, the recorded text was systematically analyzed, extracted, edited and indexed by NVivo 12 Plus. After interviewing caregivers, we determined the barriers and facilitators at the four levels of influence (children, parents, school, and hospital and society). Barriers included the side effects, parental neglect, lack of understanding of long-term drug use, lack of conducive environment, and lack of friendly medical services. Facilitators included overcoming side effects, parental responsibility, myopia progression on treatment adherence, teacher support, management by nurses, navigation by ophthalmologists, and model learning. Hence, establishing a social support network, discussing the experience of individualized drug use in preschool children, and establishing a friendly medical intervention strategy can raise awareness among parents regarding myopia, and improve atropine adherence in preschool children.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE The association between myopia and body stature is of great significance for understanding prevention and control of myopia. It has been extensively studied in previous studies but without consistent conclusions. BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to investigate the association between body stature and prevalence of reduced visual acuity in high school graduates in Hangzhou, China. METHODS 50,620 high school graduates who finished the physical examination of the national college entrance examination in 2020 were included. Data were derived from the database of physical examination of the national college entrance examination. Height and weight were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated according to the general formula. Visual acuity was measured by the standard logarithmic visual acuity chart. RESULTS The prevalence of reduced visual acuity was 90.38% in high school graduates. Girls had a higher prevalence of reduced visual acuity than boys (93.07% vs 87.60%, P < 0.001). Boys with normal visual acuity were significantly taller (P < 0.001) and heavier (P < 0.001) than those with reduced visual acuity. Girls with normal visual acuity were significantly taller than those with reduced visual acuity (P < 0.001). The prevalence of reduced visual acuity was significantly inversely associated with height in both boys (P < 0.001) and girls (P < 0.001). The risk of reduced visual acuity was the lowest in the fourth quartile of height. The prevalence of reduced visual acuity was significantly associated with BMI only in boys (P < 0.001). The risk of reduced visual acuity was the lowest in the third quartile of BMI. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of reduced visual acuity was inversely associated with height in both boys and girls, and there was a U-shaped association with BMI only in boys.

Abstract
Purpose This study investigates the prevalence and progression of myopia among primary and secondary school students in Xuzhou City, China, during one academic year. Methods The study employed a prospective research design and utilized a whole-group sampling method to conduct non-cycloplegic spot photo screenings on 37,938 students from 44 primary and secondary schools in Xuzhou City, China. A one-year study was conducted to gather spherical equivalent refraction (SER), and subsequent analysis was carried out to explore the disparities in myopia prevalence among primary and secondary school students within the same academic year, as well as the progression of myopia. Results During the 2022 academic year, the overall prevalence of myopia in the first and second semesters was 62.6 and 64.2% respectively, indicating an increasing trend. Particularly in primary school (Grades 1-6), the prevalence of myopia increased with higher grade levels, and significant variations in myopia prevalence were observed mainly in grades 1-3 and 7 (p < 0.05). The incidence rate of myopia in middle school remained stable, while in primary school, there was a positive correlation between myopia incidence and the grade level, with the highest rate of 20.1% in grade 6. Among the myopic population, the median value of spherical equivalent refraction slightly decreased between the two semesters. The proportion of high myopia increased among students in grades 5-8. Conclusion Our study revealed that within one academic year, the prevalence of myopia and the severity of myopia have significantly increased in Xuzhou City, China, accompanied by an increase in the proportion of high myopia. For different grade levels, we should adopt personalized prevention and control measures, with a particular focus on lower grade levels and students who have just entered a new grade.

Abstract
PURPOSE Myopia is a refractive error that impairs visual function and leads to visual blurring. This study aims to investigate the effect of violet light (VL) on controlling myopia, specifically in terms of axial length (AL), spherical equivalent refraction (SER), and visual acuity (VA). METHODS A systematic review was conducted to compare VL and single-vision spectacles (SVSs) for treating childhood myopia. The search terms used were "Myopia" and "Violet Light." Extensive searches were carried out in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. The mean differences were evaluated. The effects of the therapy were examined. Publication bias was assessed with a funnel plot and further investigated through sensitivity analysis. Meta-analysis was performed using Bayesian statistics with Jeffery's Amazing Statistical Package. RESULTS The meta-analysis included 126 myopic children: 64 in the VL group and 62 in the SVS group. The pooled effect size for AL shortening was evaluated as 0.659 ± 0.184, with a 95% credible interval of 0.299-1.023. The pooled effect size for SER decrease was estimated as 0.669 ± 0.188, with a 95% credible interval of 0.303-1.036. Likewise, for VA in Log-MAR, after intervention (VL and SVS), the values were 0.082 ± 0.171 with a credible interval of 0.262-0.423. Publication bias was assessed with a funnel plot, which revealed no bias. Impact sizes for the fixed effect model were determined due to the similarity in study population, geography, type of intervention, and study design. CONCLUSION VL transmission glasses play a significant role in controlling myopia among children, resulting in axial shortening, reduction of SER, and improvement in VA. However, further investigation is required to examine the long-term rebound effect.

Abstract
Purpose To examine the visual outcomes, particularly at 33 cm, and assess patient satisfaction following the implantation of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) and its toric variant. Patients and Methods This prospective single-arm observational study involved 45 Chinese patients (90 eyes) underwent bilateral cataract surgery and PanOptix or PanOptix toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) implantation. Postoperatively, visual acuity was evaluated at various distances, including 40 cm and 33 cm, for both monocular and binocular outcomes. Patient satisfaction was evaluated using the VF-14 questionnaire. Results 72 eyes underwent PanOptix IOLs implantation, and 18 eyes received PanOptix toric IOLs. At 3-month postoperative mark, the mean monocular UDVA, UIVA, and UNVA at 40 cm and 33 cm were -0.02±0.09, 0.00±0.07, 0.02±0.07, and 0.07±0.14 logMAR, respectively, with proportions of visual acuity exceeding 0.1 logMAR were 96.7%, 96.7%, 94.4%, and 74.4%, respectively. The mean binocular UDVA, UIVA, and UNVA at 40 cm and 33 cm were -0.05±0.06, -0.03±0.05, 0.00±0.05, and 0.04±0.07 logMAR, respectively, with proportions of visual acuity exceeding 0.1 logMAR were 97.8%, 100.0%, 100.0%, and 91.1%, respectively. When the near point shifted from 40cm to 33cm, some patients showed a decline for UDVA, but the average reduction was less than one line. The overall VF-14 questionnaire score was 4.02±4.19. Conclusion PanOptix can provide Chinese patients with a full range of satisfying visual acuity, near to 33cm. Though the visual acuity of some patients at 33 cm did not match the level at 40 cm, the gap of one line may not carry clinical significant.

Abstract
AIM To gain insights into the global research hotspots and trends of myopia. METHODS Articles were downloaded from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2022 from the Science Core Database website and were mainly statistically analyzed by bibliometrics software. RESULTS A total of 444 institutions in 87 countries published 4124 articles. Between 2013 and 2022, China had the highest number of publications (n=1865) and the highest H-index (61). Sun Yat-sen University had the highest number of publications (n=229) and the highest H-index (33). Ophthalmology is the main category in related journals. Citations from 2020 to 2022 highlight keywords of options and reference, child health (pediatrics), myopic traction mechanism, public health, and machine learning, which represent research frontiers. CONCLUSION Myopia has become a hot research field. China and Chinese institutions have the strongest academic influence in the field from 2013 to 2022. The main driver of myopic research is still medical or ophthalmologists. This study highlights the importance of public health in addressing the global rise in myopia, especially its impact on children's health. At present, a unified theoretical system is still needed. Accurate surgical and therapeutic solutions must be proposed for people with different characteristics to manage and intervene refractive errors. Abstract
BACKGROUND Myopia, commonly known as near-sightedness, has emerged as a global epidemic, impacting almost one in three individuals across the world. The increasing prevalence of myopia during early childhood has heightened the risk of developing high myopia and related sight-threatening eye conditions in adulthood. This surge in myopia rates, occurring within a relatively stable genetic framework, underscores the profound influence of environmental and lifestyle factors on this condition. In this comprehensive narrative review, we shed light on both established and potential environmental and lifestyle contributors that affect the development and progression of myopia. MAIN BODY Epidemiological and interventional research has consistently revealed a compelling connection between increased outdoor time and a decreased risk of myopia in children. This protective effect may primarily be attributed to exposure to the characteristics of natural light (i.e., sunlight) and the release of retinal dopamine. Conversely, irrespective of outdoor time, excessive engagement in near work can further worsen the onset of myopia. While the exact mechanisms behind this exacerbation are not fully comprehended, it appears to involve shifts in relative peripheral refraction, the overstimulation of accommodation, or a complex interplay of these factors, leading to issues like retinal image defocus, blur, and chromatic aberration. Other potential factors like the spatial frequency of the visual environment, circadian rhythm, sleep, nutrition, smoking, socio-economic status, and education have debatable independent influences on myopia development. CONCLUSION The environment exerts a significant influence on the development and progression of myopia. Improving the modifiable key environmental predictors like time spent outdoors and engagement in near work can prevent or slow the progression of myopia. The intricate connections between lifestyle and environmental factors often obscure research findings, making it challenging to disentangle their individual effects. This complexity underscores the necessity for prospective studies that employ objective assessments, such as quantifying light exposure and near work, among others. These studies are crucial for gaining a more comprehensive understanding of how various environmental factors can be modified to prevent or slow the progression of myopia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Myopia is a global public health concern that has a significant socioeconomic and psychological impact on schoolchildren. If Myopic patients are not detected early, they are exposed to retinal detachment, cataracts, and glaucoma. There have been previous studies conducted in Ethiopia, but there is significant inconsistency among studies. Hence, the aim of this study was to provide a single figure as well as associated factors for Myopia among Ethiopian schoolchildren. METHOD The national and international databases and gray literature were searched for important research articles. This review included school-based cross-sectional studies that were reported in English. The data were extracted using Microsoft word and exported to Stata™ Version 17.0 statistical software for further management and analysis .The presence of heterogeneity was checked using Cochrane Q test via fixed effects model and presented by forest plots with 95% CI. Due to the presence of substantial heterogeneity, I2 test using random effects model was computed to estimate the effect size. The existing heterogeneity among studies was explained by regional difference. To identify factors associated with myopia, meta regression was computed and significant factors was reported using OR with 95% CI. RESULTS In this systematic review and meta-analysis, 12 studies with a total of 9688 schoolchildren were included. The national estimate of myopia among schoolchildren in Ethiopia was 6.49% (95%CI: 4.86, 8.12). Having family history of myopia (OR: 9.18, 95%CI: 3.5,24.02) and being female (OR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.50, 0.98) were the identified factors associated with myopia. CONCLUSION Myopia is one of the most prevalent childhood health condition in Ethiopia, which affects about one in every fourteen schoolchildren. Schoolchildren who had family history of myopia and being female were the identified risk factors of myopia among schoolchildren. Clinical and public engagement activities are needed to address the burden of myopia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effects of orthokeratology for slowing myopia progression in children. METHODS We performed a specific search on PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Clinical Trials, CNKI, SinoMed, and Wanfang Data for RCTs conducted up to October 1, 2022. We pooled the weighted mean difference (WMD) between the orthokeratology and control groups for axial length (AL) elongation and the odds ratio (OR) for rates of adverse events and dropout. RESULTS Seven RCTs involving 655 eyes were included. There were significant differences in the effects of orthokeratology versus control in slowing AL elongation with WMD of -0.11 mm (95% confidence interval (CI), -0.13 to -0.08; P <0.01) at 6 months, -0.16 mm (95% CI, -0.18 to -0.13; P <0.01) at 12 months, -0.23 mm (95% CI, -0.29 to -0.18; P <0.01) at 18 months, and -0.28 mm (95% CI, -0.38 to -0.19; P <0.01) at 24 months, respectively. Myopia control rate declined, with 64%, 53%, 50%, and 47% recorded for 6, 12, 18, and 24 months, respectively. There was no statistical significance for adverse events between orthokeratology and control groups (OR=2.63, 95% CI, 0.72-9.61; P =0.11). CONCLUSION Orthokeratology can effectively slow myopia progression in children, and the efficacy of myopia control decreases with time.

Abstract
Background Myopia is a common cause of vision impairment worldwide. In China, the prevalence, the affected population, and the onset age of myopia are prominent issues. Prevention and intervention of myopia are great public health concerns. Methods This school-based retrospective study retrieved visual acuity and refractive data of senior students (grade 12th) from six high schools in Fenghua City, Zhejiang Province, eastern China, from 2016 and 2022. Noncycloplegic autorefraction was performed for refractive status. Students were divided into three subgroups by their school types. The overall myopia prevalence, as well as the prevalence of low myopia, moderate myopia, and high myopia, were calculated separately for each year. Statistical analyzes were performed using SPSS 25.0 and Graphpad Prism software. Results The mean myopia prevalence in Fenghua was 84.5% (95% CI: 84.0-85.0%), and a slightly downward trend was found in myopia prevalence after 2019, but the change was not statistically significant (p = 0.078). The overall prevalence of myopia was 79.6, 85.2, and 86.1% in vocational high schools, general high schools, and key high schools, respectively, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.001). The prevalence of myopia among senior students in the vocational high school was significantly lower than that in the other two high schools. There's no significant change in the overall prevalence of myopia (84.7% vs. 84.3%, p = 0.265) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it remained statistically insignificant after stratifying by gender (male p = 0.207, female p = 0.918) or school types (vocational high school p = 0.112; general high school p = 0.299; key high school p = 0.393). Conclusion The prevalence of myopia among senior students in Fenghua is relatively high, and the COVID-19 pandemic has no significant impact on it. The prevalence of myopia among vocational high school students is lower than that of general high school and key high school. Attention should be paid to the effects of educational pressure on the prevalence of myopia among students.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE This survey provides information about Chinese children's myopia correction status and parents' attitudes toward myopia correction. PURPOSE Under the background of a guideline of appropriate techniques for the prevention and control of children's myopia, this study aimed to investigate the current myopia correction pattern of children and parents' attitudes. METHODS Two self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 684 children with myopia corrections and 450 parents (384 mothers and 66 fathers) to explore children's myopia correction patterns and parental attitudes. The questionnaire investigated the pattern of children's myopia correction, prescribing of children's myopia correction, the incidence of high myopia, parental attitudes toward various myopia corrections methods, and preferred initial age for contact lens usage. RESULTS Single-vision spectacles (n = 600; 88.2 ± 7.4%) are widely used in China because of their comfort and affordability. More than 80% of children use single-vision spectacles prescribed by ophthalmologists and opticians. Children who used single-vision spectacles at an earlier age had more incidence of high myopia (18.4 ± 4.2%) than those who used single-vision spectacles at a later age (0.7 ± 0.9%). Effective myopia control was the primary reason parents preferred to choose different optical corrections, followed by safety, convenience, clarity, affordability, comfort, and other reasons. The survey indicated that 52.4% of parents whose children used orthokeratology lenses would have preferred safe and convenient options if available. In addition, 50% of the parents preferred delaying their children's use of orthokeratology lenses and other contact lenses to an older age. CONCLUSIONS Single-vision spectacles are still a popular option to correct myopia in children. There was a demonstrated increase in myopia in children who used single spectacles at an earlier age. Parents' attitudes were important factors for selecting myopia corrections in children.

Abstract
PURPOSE The 2020 epidemiological investigation of myopia in children and adolescents in Fujian Province' aimed to provide reference guidelines for the prevention and control of myopia. The purpose of the present study was to address shortfalls in the epidemiological survey of myopia in Fujian and provide a basis for government decision making. STUDY DESIGN A cross-sectional and epidemiological investigation METHODS: Based on their levels of economic development and other economic factors, three cities in Fujian Province (Fuzhou, Xiamen, Longyan) were chosen through cluster random sampling and epidemiological investigation. Final analysis included 41,906 cases. Examinations including visual acuity and mydriatic optometry were performed on all subjects. RESULTS The overall proportion of myopia was 63.35% in boys and 70.55% in girls living in Fujian in 2020. The proportions of myopia in Xiamen and Longyan were similar; both cities showed a higher proportion of myopic cases than Fuzhou. The proportion of girls with myopia was higher than boys. The proportion of primary and middle school students with myopia was higher in economically developed regions compared with underdeveloped regions. The proportion of urban students with myopia was higher than in suburban students. Analysis showed that the prevalence of myopia increased with age. Interestingly, the prevalence of myopia was higher in children born in June and August than in children born in other months. CONCLUSION Children and adolescents in Fujian have a high rate of myopia which increases as the school grade increases. The better the economic conditions are, the higher the myopic rate. In addition, the myopic rate is higher in girls in and students born in June and August. The government, schools, hospitals, and parents should be alerted to this issue and coordinate to control the risk of myopia exacerbation and improve eyesight conditions of students in Fujian Province.

Abstract
Importance Myopia is a global concern, but effective prevention measures remain limited. Premyopia is a refractive state in which children are at higher risk of myopia, meriting preventive interventions. Objective To assess the efficacy and safety of a repeated low-level red-light (RLRL) intervention in preventing incident myopia among children with premyopia. Design, Setting, and Participants This was a 12-month, parallel-group, school-based randomized clinical trial conducted in 10 primary schools in Shanghai, China. A total of 139 children with premyopia (defined as cycloplegic spherical equivalence refraction [SER] of -0.50 to 0.50 diopter [D] in the more myopic eye and having at least 1 parent with SER ≤-3.00 D) in grades 1 to 4 were enrolled between April 1, 2021, and June 30, 2021; the trial was completed August 31, 2022. Interventions Children were randomly assigned to 2 groups after grade stratification. Children in the intervention group received RLRL therapy twice per day, 5 days per week, with each session lasting 3 minutes. The intervention was conducted at school during semesters and at home during winter and summer vacations. Children in the control group continued usual activities. Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was the 12-month incidence rate of myopia (defined as SER ≤-0.50 D). Secondary outcomes included the changes in SER, axial length, vision function, and optical coherence tomography scan results over 12 months. Data from the more myopic eyes were analyzed. Outcomes were analyzed by means of an intention-to-treat method and per-protocol method. The intention-to-treat analysis included participants in both groups at baseline, while the per-protocol analysis included participants in the control group and those in the intervention group who were able to continue the intervention without interruption by the COVID-19 pandemic. Results There were 139 children (mean [SD] age, 8.3 [1.1] years; 71 boys [51.1%]) in the intervention group and 139 children (mean [SD] age, 8.3 [1.1] years; 68 boys [48.9%]) in the control group. The 12-month incidence of myopia was 40.8% (49 of 120) in the intervention group and 61.3% (68 of 111) in the control group, a relative 33.4% reduction in incidence. For children in the intervention group who did not have treatment interruption secondary to the COVID-19 pandemic, the incidence was 28.1% (9 of 32), a relative 54.1% reduction in incidence. The RLRL intervention significantly reduced the myopic shifts in terms of axial length and SER compared with the control group (mean [SD] axial length, 0.30 [0.27] mm vs 0.47 [0.25] mm; difference, 0.17 mm [95% CI, 0.11-0.23 mm]; mean [SD] SER, -0.35 [0.54] D vs -0.76 [0.60] D; difference, -0.41 D [95% CI, -0.56 to -0.26 D]). No visual acuity or structural damage was noted on optical coherence tomography scans in the intervention group. Conclusions and Relevance In this randomized clinical trial, RLRL therapy was a novel and effective intervention for myopia prevention, with good user acceptability and up to 54.1% reduction in incident myopia within 12 months among children with premyopia. Effect of Myopic Undercorrection on Habitual Reading Distance in Schoolchildren: The Hong Kong Children Eye Study. Ophthalmol Ther 2023; 12:925-938. Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to evaluate the habitual reading distance among non-myopic children and also myopic children with undercorrection and with full correction. METHODS This was a population-based cross-sectional study with a total of 2363 children aged 6-8 years who were recruited from the Hong Kong Children Eye Study. Cycloplegic autorefraction, subjective refraction, habitual visual acuity, and best corrected visual acuity were measured. The entire reading process (9 min) was recorded using a hidden video camera placed 5 m away from the reading desk. Reading distances were taken at 6, 7, 8, and 9 min after the child began reading and were measured using a customized computer program developed in MATLAB. The main outcome was the association of habitual reading distances with refraction status. Habitual reading distances of children were documented via video camera footage. RESULTS The habitual reading distances of undercorrected myopic children (23.37 ± 4.31 cm) were the shortest when compared to non-myopic children (24.20 ± 4.73 cm, P = 0.002) and fully corrected myopic children (24.81 ± 5.21 cm, P < 0.001), while there was no significant difference between the last two children groups (P = 0.17). A shorter reading distance was associated with myopia (OR 1.67; 95% CI 1.11-2.51; P = 0.013) after adjusting for age, sex, height, near work time, outdoor time, and parental myopia. The association of reading distance with myopia did not hold after undercorrected myopic children were excluded (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.55-1.73; P = 0.92). A shorter reading distance correlated with poorer vision under habitual correction (β = - 0.003, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION A shorter reading distance was present among undercorrected myopic children. Myopia undercorrection is not recommended as a strategy for slowing myopic progression.

Abstract
Objectives: To study the epidemiological characteristics and influencing factors of myopia to provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of myopia. Methods: 7,597 students studying in grades 1-3 were followed up. Eye examinations and questionnaire surveys were conducted annually from 2019 to 2021. The influencing factors of myopia were analyzed by logistic regression model. Results: The prevalence of myopia among students in grades 1-3 in 2019 was 23.4%, which increased to 41.9% and 51.9% after the 1-and 2-year follow-up, respectively. The incidence of myopia and change in the spherical equivalent refraction (SER) were higher in 2020 than in 2021. The 2-year cumulative incidences of myopia were 2.5%, 10.1%, 15.5%, 36.3%, and 54.1% in students with a baseline SER >+1.50D, +1.00D to +1.50D, +0.50D to +1.00D, 0.00D to +0.50D, and -0.50D to 0.00D, respectively. Outdoor activities, sex, age, baseline SER, parental myopia, sleep time, and digital device exposure were associated with myopia. Conclusion: The prevalence of myopia demonstrated a rapid increase; thus, healthy habits and outdoor activities should be promoted for the prevention and control of myopia.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the tear film surface quality after orthokeratology using an automated Medmont E300 corneal topographer. METHODS Children who wore orthokeratology lenses for more than one year were selected in this retrospective study. Tear film disruption (TFD) and central tear film disruption (cTFD) were measured with Medmont E300 corneal topographer at initial and each follow-up visit after fitting with orthokeratology lenses, providing a nominal value from 0 (perfect) to 1 (poor). Tear film surface quality before and after ortho-k treatment was compared. RESULTS 145 children using orthokeratology lenses were observed. TFD and cTFD significantly increased at 1-day follow up (TFD, t = -17.3, P < 0.001; cTFD, t = -10.4, P < 0.001). This change remained consistent through to 12-months visit (TFD, F = 51.1, P < 0.001; cTFD, F = 28.0, P < 0.001). A sub-group of n = 11 children were discontinued for 1-month before being refit with OrthoK lenses of a different design. Similarly, there was a significant increase in TFD compared to pre-orthoK scans (0.172 ± 0.161), but this returned to baseline levels after ceasing lens wear (0.084 ± 0.059). A sub-group of monocular OrthoK wearers (n = 23) found that TFD and cTFD values increased in eyes with monocular lens-wearing but remained stable in the lateral eyes. CONCLUSIONS Objective measurements of tear-film quality are reduced in children after fitting with orthokeratology lenses, but return to baseline after 1-month of lens cessation. It is of importance to ensure tear film surface quality is continuously monitored throughout use of orthoK lenses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myopia is a serious public health issue. High school-aged adolescents in Beijing have an alarming prevalence of myopia. Therefore, determining myopia protective factors is essential. Green space has a certain association with myopia protective factors that can protect against myopia. OBJECTIVE This study aims to examine the effects of green space around schools on individual myopia risk in high school-aged adolescents and the school-level myopia prevalence. METHODS Green space was measured using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). A total of 13,380 samples of 51 high schools were selected from a 2021 Beijing Municipal Health Commission survey. Adolescent myopia was defined as a spherical equivalent of ≤-1.00 diopters in the worse eye. Generalized linear mixed models with a binomial error structure were used to analyze the effects of the NDVI on personal myopia risk and adjust them by other factors, such as demographics, exposure time, and outdoor exercise. The effects of the NDVI on school-level myopia prevalence with adjusted demographics and the relative position factors of trees were analyzed through quasibinomial regression. RESULTS The overall prevalence of myopia was 80.61% (10,785/13,380, 95% CI 79.93%-81.27%). Although with a 0.1 increase in the 500 and 1000 m buffer NDVIs adjusted by demographic and other factors, the high school-aged personal myopia risk significantly dropped by 16% (odds ratio [OR] 0.84, 95% CI 0.73-0.97) and 12% (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.79-0.99), respectively. However, only the adjusted 500 m buffer NDVI (by demographics and the position of trees) with a 0.1 increase significantly reduced the school-level myopia prevalence by 15% (OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.74-0.98). Subgroup analysis showed that the adjusted effects of the 500 m buffer NDVI are significant in schoolgirls (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.72-0.93), juniors (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.72-0.94), the Han nationality (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.72-0.97), 1-year exposure (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.71-0.99) and 3-year exposure (OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.65-0.94). CONCLUSIONS The greenness of a 500 m buffer around schools is associated with a lower personal myopia risk among adolescents and a lower prevalence of myopia in schools. With regard to prevention and control activities, green space within a 500 m buffer around schools is suggested as an independent protective factor for adolescent myopia.

Abstract
Rising childhood myopia rate has detrimental health consequences that pose a considerable challenge to health systems. The school spatial environment, which is where students are for the longest period of time, has a high health value for myopia systematic intervention. While research has demonstrated associations between physical daylight environments, medical gene and visual health, the literature currently lacks a synthesis of evidence that will act as a spatially-organized resource for school designers. This study is based on literature from the period 2000-2022 and has been taken from the Web of Science, scopus, Medline and CNKI core collection database. Collaboration, literature co-citation and quantitative and qualitative analysis, in addition to keyword co-occurrence are adopted to conduct a visual health research review. The results indicate that intensive near work activity (as a risk factor) and longer time spent outdoors (as a protective factor), are involved in visual health factors. Two main research themes are obtained and relate to: (1) The environment of visual work behavior (especially the near work learning environment) and adaptable multimedia learning environment; and (2) the environment of outdoor exposure behavior. Furthermore, with the variation of educational demands, models and concepts, there are different demands for near work behavior, and this study makes an important contribution by pointing to two future research directions, including the accurate and controllable environment of near work behavior, which operate in accordance with various educational mode requirements and the active design of the environment of outdoor exposure behavior. In referring to differences between regions and countries, as well as the development of the educational environment, it provides insight into how these demands can be controlled.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of myopia and high myopia and the associated risk factors in key schools in Xi'an, China. METHODS This cross-sectional study started in September 2021 and was conducted for one month. A total of 11,011 students from 10 key primary schools, five key junior high schools and five key high schools in Xi'an were randomly selected to undergo visual acuity measurement and non-cycloplegic autorefraction. The questionnaire was completed by the students and their parents together. RESULTS The prevalence of myopia and high myopia in key schools were 75.7% and 9.7%, respectively. The prevalence of myopia and high myopia rose significantly as grade or age increased (all P < 0.001), and the prevalence of myopia and high myopia in females was higher than that in males (P < 0.001, P < 0.5). According to the multivariable logistic regression analysis, older age (OR=1.42), female compared with male (OR=1.43), having one myopic parent (OR=1.64), having two myopic parent (OR=2.30) and often taking extracurricular tuition (OR=1.35) were more likely to be associated with develop myopia (P < 0.001). Older age (OR=1.39), having one myopic parent (OR=2.29), having two myopic parent (OR= 3.69), and often taking extracurricular tuition (OR=1.48) were more likely to be associated with high myopia (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The overall rate of myopia and high myopia in key schools in Xi'an, China, is extremely high. Myopia and high myopia are associated with increasing age, parents' myopia, few outdoor exercises, and extracurricular tuition. Myopia is also associated with female and not having the habit of "one punch, one foot, one inch (when reading and writing, 10 cm from the chest to the table, 33 cm from the eye to the book and 3.3 cm from the tip of the pen to the finger)".

Abstract
Background To assess and compare the efficacy, safety, accuracy, predictability and visual quality of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) and a refractive rotationally asymmetric bifocal IOL in eyes with axial myopia. Methods This prospective cohort study enrolled patients with implantation of the diffractive trifocal IOL or the refractive bifocal IOL. Eyes were divided into four groups according to the IOL implanted and axial length. Manifest refraction, uncorrected and corrected visual acuity at far, intermediate and near distances, prediction error of spherical equivalent (SE), contrast sensitivity and aberrations were evaluated three months after surgery. Results In total, 80 eyes of 80 patients were included: 20 eyes in each group. Three months postoperatively, the corrected distance visual acuity of two trifocal groups were significantly better than the axial myopia bifocal group (P = 0.007 and 0.043). There was no significant difference of postoperative SE (P = 0.478), but the SE predictability of the trifocal IOL was better, whether in axial myopia groups (P = 0.015) or in control groups (P = 0.027). The contrast sensitivity was similar among four groups. The total aberration, higher order aberration and trefoil aberration of bifocal groups were significantly higher (all P < 0.001). Conclusions The diffractive trifocal IOL and the refractive bifocal IOL both provided good efficacy, accuracy, predictability and safety for eyes with axial myopia. By contrast, the trifocal IOL had a better performance in corrected distance visual acuity and visual quality. Abstract
Background: Determine whether the presence of ocular symptoms in soft-contact-lens wearers changes depending on the refractive status. Methods: During the months of January to March 2022, the CLDEQ-8 questionnaire was administered to soft-contact-lens wearers. The statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS 27.0 computer program (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results: A total of 251 subjects participated in the study, with a higher percentage of myopes than hyperopes (82.1% versus 16.7%; p < 0.001). Out of all total participants, 21.5% suffered from dry-eye symptoms. It was noted that hyperopes presented a higher rate of dry-eye symptoms (p = 0.041). At the same time, the spherical equivalent was more positive in the participants with dry-eye symptoms (p = 0.014). Significant differences were found based on the symptoms present with contact lenses and the degree of myopia. The intensity of visual disturbances was higher in the participants with medium myopia (median [IQR]: 1/5 [2]) compared to those with low (median [IQR]: 0/5 [2]) and high myopia (median [IQR]: 0/5 [1]) (p = 0.009). Conclusions: Contact-lens wearers with hyperopia showed a higher rate of ocular dryness than those with myopia. In turn, wearing daily-replacement lenses could be one of the reasons for the lesser presence of ocular dryness compared to monthly-replacement lenses.

Abstract
Background Preventive parental behavior may play an important role in the outcomes of children’s myopia. We investigated associations between parental behavior and children’s myopia status and daily activities using data from the most recent myopia survey in Taiwan. Methods In total, 3845 children aged 3 to 18 years who completely responded to the questionnaire were included (total score ranging from 0 to 75). A score of ≥ 50 was considered to indicate beneficial parental behavior. Time allocation data for near-work activities, using electronic devices, and outdoor activities were collected using a separate self-reported questionnaire. Associations between beneficial parental behavior and children’s myopia status and activity patterns were analyzed and stratified by school level. Results Beneficial parental behavior was positively associated with children’s myopia in the overall samples [adj. odds ratio (OR): 1.31, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08–1.59, p = 0.006)] and at the elementary school level (adj. OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.11–1.83, p = 0.005). However, a negative association with high myopia was observed in the overall samples (adj. OR: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.50–0.99, p = 0.049) and high school level (adj. OR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.41–0.92, p = 0.02). Beneficial parental behavior was associated with less time spent on near work (≥ 180 min/day) and electronic device use (≥ 60 min/day), but not with outdoor activities. Conclusion In Taiwan, children’s myopia is associated with higher rate of parents’ beneficial behaviors, which suggests that regular vision surveillance is necessary to promote better parental behavior toward children’s eye care. Certain parental practices may influence children’s behavior pattern and reduce the risk of children’s high myopia development in the long run. Abstract
Purpose To assess the prevalence of refractive errors (REs) in school children aged 6-18 years in urban and rural settings in Dalian, Northeast of China. Methods This is a school-based cross-sectional survey using multi-stage randomization technique. Six- to eighteen-year-old school children from elementary schools, junior and senior high schools from a rural area and an urban area in Dalian were included in December 2018. All subjects underwent a comprehensive questionnaire and eye examination. Results A total of 4,522 school children with 6-18 years of age were investigated. The age, gender-adjusted prevalence of myopia, and anisometropia were 82.71 and 7.27% among the urban students as compared to 71.76% and 5.41% among the rural ones (OR = 1.80, 95 % CI = 1.53 - 2.11, P < 0.001; OR = 1.29, 95 % CI = 1.00-1.67, P = 0.049), respectively. The hyperopia was less common in urban students than in rural ones (5.63 vs. 10.21%; OR = 0.54, 95 % CI: 0.43-0.67, P < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in prevalence of astigmatism between urban (46.07%) and rural (44.69%) participants (OR = 0.96, 95 % CI: 0.84-1.10, P = 0.559). The differences on prevalence of REs were attributed to different social-demographic and physiologic factors. Conclusions The students from urban settings are more likely to have myopia and anisometropia but less likely to have hyperopia than their rural counterparts. Although considerable attention had been paid to controlling REs, it is necessary to further consider the urban-rural differences in REs.

Abstract
Background We conducted this study to investigate the prevalence of myopia among school students in Ningbo and to explore the associations between reading and writing postures and myopia. Methods A population-based and cross-sectional study was conducted, and 3,256 school students aged 8-19 years were recruited. Each enrolled subject was assessed for uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) using a standard logarithmic visual acuity E-chart and a non-cycloplegic autorefraction examination. Self-administered questionnaires were used to investigate myopia-related reading and writing postures and behavioral habits among school students. Results The prevalence of myopia among primary school, middle school, and high school students was 61.49, 81.43, and 89.72%, respectively. Regarding the associations between reading and writing postures and myopia, we identified that a reading distance >33 cm is a protective factor for myopia in female students [odds ratio (OR) = 0.31, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.15-0.64], in both primary school (OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.30-0.99) and middle school (OR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.15-0.90). Conclusions A reading distance >33 cm can be used as an additional measure to prevent and control myopia. Proper postural measures for reading and writing may have educational and public health benefits.

Abstract
This study evaluated the incidence rate and risk factors for developing myopia in elementary school students in Chiayi, Taiwan. This prospective cohort study comprised 1816 students without myopia (grades 1 to 5 in Chiayi County). The students underwent a noncycloplegic ocular alignment examinations using an autorefractometer and completed a questionnaires at baseline and at a 1-year follow-up. A univariate logistic regression was used to assess the effects of the categorical variables on new cases of myopia. A multinomial logistic regression was then conducted. A chi-squared test was used to compare new cases of myopia in terms of ocular alignment. A Cox hazard ratio model was then used to validate factors associated with changes in ocular alignment. A P value of <.05 was considered significant. In 370 participants with new cases of myopia out of 1816 participants, a spherical error of -1.51 ± 0.6 diopters was noted at follow-up. The baseline ocular alignment was not a significant risk factor for developing myopia (exophoria vs orthophoria: OR 1.26, 95% CI 0.97-1.62; other vs. orthophoria: OR 1.15, 95% CI 0.73-1.82). However, new cases of myopia (HR 1.36, 95% CI 1.14-1.61), and baseline ocular alignment (exophoria vs orthophoria: HR 3.76, 95% CI 3.20-4.42; other vs orthophoria: HR 3.02, 95% CI 2.05-4.45) were associated with exophoria at follow-up. This study provided epidemiological data on the incidence of myopia in elementary school students in Chiayi, Taiwan. It also demonstrated that physiological exophoria does not predispose patients to developing myopia.

Abstract
High myopia is a common ocular genetic disease in the world. The study sought to investigate the effect of the Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) genes polymorphisms on high myopia in a Han population of China. This study recruited 216 unrelated Han Chinese subjects, including 103 cases with high myopia and 113 controls. Four tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of IGF-1 and MMP-9 genes were genotyped using the Sequenom MassARRAY method. The chi-square test showed that the family history was significantly correlated with myopia. The SNP genotypes were all in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05). Among the four SNPs, there were statistically significant differences in the genotype and allele frequencies of rs2236416 between the groups (P = 0.024). The significant associations of rs2236416 between cases and controls also appeared after Bonferroni multiple correction (P = 0.024). Then, there were significant differences in the genotypes dominant model and codominant model of rs2236416 between groups (P = 0.007 and P = 0.004, respectively). rs5742632 showed a significant difference between the cases and the controls in the recessive model (P = 0.037). Our findings indicated that rs2236416 of MMP-9 was associated with myopia in the population. The result suggested MMP-9 gene locus may play a role in myopia.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of myopia among medical students at the University of Gondar College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Northwest Ethiopia. Patients and Methods Institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Gondar College of Medicine and Health Sciences from June 20 to August 15, 2021. A simple random sampling technique with proportional allocation was used to select 492 students. Interviewer-administered questionnaire, Snellen acuity chart, pinhole, retinoscope and direct ophthalmoscope were used to collect the data. The data were entered to EpiData version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Descriptive statistics were summarized by measures of central tendency. Variables with p-value ≤0.2 in bivariable regression were entered into a multivariable logistic regression model. Adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was used and variables with p-values <0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results A total of 492 respondents participated giving a response rate of 98.3%. The prevalence of myopia was found to be 16.7% (95% CI = 12.8–19.4%). Urban residents (AOR = 1.56; 95% CI: 1.28–6.21), family history of myopia (AOR = 2.31; 95% CI: 1.33–4.54), near-work activity of 5–7 hours (AOR = 2.41; 95% CI: 1.31–5.76) and ≥8 hours (AOR = 4.35; 95% CI: 1.96–9.66), outdoor activity for <3 hours (AOR = 1.65 95% CI: (1.14–4.53), were significantly associated with myopia. Conclusion The prevalence of myopia among medical students at the University of Gondar College of Medicine and Health Sciences was high. Urban residency, positive family history, longer time spent on near-work activities and less outdoor activity were positively associated with myopia.

Abstract
Background China contributes to a significant proportion of the myopia in the world. The study aims to investigate the utilization of various correction methods and health service in urban China, and to estimate the cost of myopia treatment and prevention. In addition, we aimed to estimate the cost of productivity loss due to myopia. Methods The study was a cross-sectional investigation carried out in urban areas in three provinces located in the east (Shanghai), middle (Anhui) and west part (Yunnan) of China, in 2016. A total of 23819 people aged between 5 to 50 years were included. Health utilization and the cost of myopia were analyzed from patients’ perspective. Results The total number of people with myopia in the urban China was estimated to be 143.6 million. The correction rate was 89.5%, 92.1%, and 92.7% for Anhui, Shanghai, and Yunnan (χ2 = 19.5, P < 0.01). Over the recent year, 20.6%, 16.8%, and 28.8% of myopic subjects visited hospital due to myopia, in Anhui, Shanghai and Yunnan. The annual cost of treatment and prevention of myopia was 10.1 billion US dollar (US$, floating from 9.2 to 11.2 billion US$), and the cost per person was 69US$. The annual cost of loss of productivity was estimated to be 6.7 billion US$ for those with mild to moderate visual impairment (floating from 6.1 to 7.4 billion US$), and 9.4 billion US$ (floating from 8.5 to 10.4 billion US$) for those with severe visual impairment to blindness. Therefore, the total economic burden of myopia was estimated as 173.6 billion CNY (26.3 billion US$). Conclusions The present study shows that myopia leads to substantial economic burden in China. The loss of productivity caused by myopia is an important part of the disease burden compared to the cost of correction and treatment paid by individuals. Therefore, the focus of myopia prevention and control should be to decrease the myopia prevalence, and prevent the uncorrected refractive errors and the irreversible damage of visual acuity by high myopia.

Abstract
PURPOSE Myopia is one of the avoidable causes of visual impairment. Twenty-seven percent of the world population were myopic in 2010 and after 30 years it is expected half of the peoples in the planet will become myopic. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with myopia among high school students. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional school-based study design using stratified simple random sampling technique was used to select 349 high school students from 21 high schools in Hawassa city. The study was conducted from April 24 to May 7, 2019. Structured questionnaire, six meter Snellen visual acuity chart, trial frame, trial set, retinoscope and cyclopentolate 1% eye drops were used to collect data. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20 computer software. Variables having p-value <0.05 in multivariate logistic regression were considered as statistically significant. RESULTS A total of 349 participants having a response rate of 97% were involved with the mean age of 16.90±1.32 years. Prevalence of myopia was 16.05% (95%CI: 12.6, 20.1). Early age of schooling (adjusted odds ratio, AOR=3.14; 95%CI: 1.16, 10.06), parents being myopic (AOR=8.46; 95%CI: 7.11, 12.08), prolonged near work (AOR=11.65; 95%CI: 2.11, 64.5), short working distance (AOR=10.90; 95%CI: 0.57, 20.55), lack of outdoor sport activities (AOR=7.37; 95%CI: 2.71, 20.03) and visual display unit (VDU) usage (AOR=8.36; 95%CI: 2.39, 29.33) were variables significantly associated with myopia. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS The prevalence of myopia was high in the study area. Early age of schooling, parents being myopic, prolonged near work, short working distance, lack of outdoor sport activities, and visual display unit usage were variables significantly associated with myopia. There should be strategies to prevent visual impairments secondary to myopia with affordable optical corrections and appropriate use of visual display units.

Abstract
CONTEXT A correlation between myopia and insulin resistance has been suggested. OBJECTIVE We investigated the association between myopia in adolescence and type 2 diabetes (T2D) incidence in young adulthood. METHODS This population-based, retrospective, cohort study comprised 1 329 705 adolescents (579 543 women, 43.6%) aged 16 to 19 years, who were medically examined before mandatory military service during 1993 to 2012, and whose data were linked to the Israel National Diabetes Registry. Myopia was defined based on right-eye refractive data. Cox proportional models were applied, separately for women and men, to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for T2D incidence per person-years of follow-up. RESULTS There was an interaction between myopia and sex with T2D (P < .001). For women, T2D incidence rates (per 100 000 person-years) were 16.6, 19.2, and 25.1 for those without myopia, and with mild-to-moderate and high myopia, respectively. These corresponded to HRs of 1.29 (95% CI, 1.14-1.45) and 1.63 (1.21-2.18) for women with mild-to-moderate and high myopia, respectively, compared to those without myopia, after adjustment for age at study entry, birth year, adolescent body mass index, cognitive performance, socioeconomic status, and immigration status. Results persisted in extensive sensitivity and subgroup analyses. When managed as a continuous variable, every 1-diopter lower spherical equivalent yielded a 6.5% higher adjusted HR for T2D incidence (P = .003). There was no significant association among men. CONCLUSION For women, myopia in adolescence was associated with a significantly increased risk for incident T2D in young adulthood, in a severity-dependent manner. This finding may support the role of insulin resistance in myopia pathogenesis.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Knowledge of interactions between genetic variants and near-work activities at the onset of myopia can facilitate health education regarding myopia. BACKGROUND To investigate the interactions between genetic variants (PDE10A, AREG and GABRR1) and near-work activities in the onset of myopia in southeastern Chinese school children. METHODS A total of 458 non-myopic, grade 1 children aged 6-7 years were included in a 4-year follow-up examination; 409 children were assessed further. Manifest (non-cycloplegic) refraction and axial length (AL) were measured every year, and questionnaires were administered annually to assess information regarding the demographic characteristics of children, near-work activities, outdoor exposure and parental myopia. Oral mucosa was collected in the last year of follow-up, and Sanger sequencing was used to genotype single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DNA. RESULTS The cumulative change in the spherical equivalent refraction (SER) over 4 years was -1.20 ± 1.00 D, and the proportion of children with incident myopia was 42.9%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that an increased amount of time spent doing homework (>2 h/d) was an independent risk factor for incident myopia. The PDE10A rs12206610CT genotype and spending > 5 h/d on near-work activities showed an interaction for incident myopia (OR = 4.29, 95% CI: 1.27-14.53; Pinteraction = 0.02); moreover, the rs12206610CT genotype carriers who used electronic devices for > 1 h/d displayed an increased risk of incident myopia (OR = 3.43, 95% CI: 1.07-11.01; Pinteraction = 0.043). CONCLUSIONS The rs2206610CT genotype carriers with near-work activities of >5 h/d were more likely to show incident myopia, especially those who used electronic devices >1 h/d. However, interactions between the rs12206610 SNP and near-work activities require further verification in animal models and larger sample cohorts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myopia is one of the most common eye diseases in school-aged children. Multifocal lens (MFL) is one of the interventions that has being widely applied to control the progress of myopia. However, the treatment effects of MFLs in school-aged children require to be systematically evaluated. METHODS A systematic analysis on qualified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which MFLs were prescribed as the intervention and single-vision lenses (SVLs) as the control was conducted. The treatment effects referring to the mean differences in spherical equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL) between MFLs and SVLs groups were analyzed. RESULTS With annual visit (3-years follow-up), the weighted mean differences (WMDs) in SER between MFLs and SVLs were 0.29 D (95% CI, 0.21 ∼ 0.37, p < 0.00001), 0.46 D (95% CI, 0.32 ∼ 0.60, p < 0.00001), and 0.64 D (95% CI, 0.40 ∼ 0.88, p < 0.00001) at the first, second, and third year; in AL were -0.12 mm (95% CI, -0.14 ∼-0.11, p < 0.00001), -0.19 mm (95% CI, -0.22 ∼-0.16, p < 0.00001), and -0.26 mm (95% CI, -0.31 ∼-0.21, p < 0.00001) at the first, second, and third year. With 6-months interval trials (2-years follow-up), the WMDs in SER from MFLs were 0.14 D (95% CI, 0.08 ∼ 0.20, p < 0.0001), 0.19 D (95% CI, 0.11 ∼ 0.28, p < 0.0001), 0.24 D (95% CI, 0.16 ∼ 0.33, p < 0.0001), 0.31 D (95% CI, 0.18 ∼ 0.44, p < 0.0001) and in AL from MFLs were -0.08 mm (95% CI, -0.09 ∼-0.07, p < 0.00001), -0.10 mm (95% CI, -0.12 ∼-0.09, p < 0.00001), -0.14 mm (95% CI, -0.17 ∼-0.11, p < 0.00001), and -0.18 mm (95% CI, -0.22 ∼-0.14, p < 0.00001) slower comparing with SVLs at follow up of 6, 12, 18, and 24 months, respectively. CONCLUSION The treatment effects of MFLs to slow down the myopic progress are positive in both 6-months and annual-visit trials and which could be sustained till 36 months. While a slight weaker treatment effect was observed after the first visit in 6-months visit, a slight rebound was observed at the following visit points. Furthermore, the treatment effects in annual visit are more profound than 6-months visit at almost all stages especially in SER. Our analysis encourages the MFLs users to maintain a long-term treatment with annual visit.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the prevalence of dry eye disease symptoms and contact lens wear in Mexican high school students. METHODS A cross-sectional association study included a group of high school students who were selected from a random sampling of classrooms. The authors used the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire as a surrogate measure for dry eye disease symptoms, and contact lens wear was also investigated. RESULTS Seven hundred fifty-nine students with a mean age of 16.12 ± 0.96 years were surveyed and 55.7% of the students were girls (423 of 759). The average OSDI score was 25.11 ± 20.61 points. Girls had higher scores (28.25 ± 21.48 points) than boys (21.14 ± 18.74 points), and the difference was statistically significant (P < .001). Forty-three students (6.1%) wore contact lenses and had higher OSDI scores (34.26 ± 23.13 and 24.51 ± 20.31 points, respectively) and the difference was also statistically significant (P = .002). CONCLUSIONS Symptoms of mild and moderate dry eye disease are prevalent in high school students and, as reported in previous studies, girls are more affected than boys. Is 0.01% Atropine an Effective and Safe Treatment for Myopic Children? A Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis. J Clin Med 2021; 10:jcm10173766. Abstract
Several conflicting results regarding the efficacy of 0.01% atropine in slowing axial elongation remain in doubt. To solve this issue and evaluate the safety of 0.01% atropine, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis with the latest evidence. The review included a total of 1178 participants (myopic children). The efficacy outcomes were the mean annual progression in standardized equivalent refraction (SER) and axial length (AL). The safety outcomes included mean annual change in accommodative amplitude, photopic and mesopic pupil diameter. The results demonstrated that 0.01% atropine significantly retarded SER progression compared with the controls (weighted mean difference [WMD], 0.28 diopter (D) per year; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.17, 0.38; p < 0.01), and axial elongation (WMD, −0.06 mm; 95% CI = −0.09, −0.03; p < 0.01) during the 1-year period. Patients receiving 0.01% atropine showed no significant changes in accommodative amplitude (WMD, −0.45 D; 95% CI = −1.80, 0.90; p = 0.51) but showed dilated photopic pupil diameter (WMD, 0.35 mm; 95% CI = 0.02, 0.68; p = 0.04) and mesopic pupil diameter (WMD, 0.20 mm; 95% CI = 0.08, 0.32; p < 0.01). In the subgroup analysis of SER progression, myopic children with lower baseline refraction (>−3 D) and older age (>10-year-old) obtained better responses with 0.01% atropine treatment. Furthermore, the European and multi-ethnicity groups showed greater effect than the Asian groups. In conclusion, 0.01% atropine had favorable efficacy and adequate safety for childhood myopia over a 1-year period.

Abstract
Background To investigate the prevalence and time trends of refractive error (RE) among Chinese children under 18 years old. Methods PubMed, Embase, Web of Science were searched for articles that estimated prevalence of RE in Chinese children. Data of identified eligible studies was extracted by two investigators independently. Pooled prevalence of RE and its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and the time trends of RE were investigated using Meta-analysis methods. Results Of the 41 studies covering 1 051 784 subjects, the pooled prevalence of myopia, high myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism in Chinese children was 38.0% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 35.1%-41.1%), 2.8% (95% CI = 2.3%-3.4%), 5.2% (95% CI = 3.1%-8.6%) and 16.5% (95% CI = 12.3%-21.8%), respectively. Subgroup analysis show that children living in urban were at higher risk of RE. Prevalence of myopia and hyperopia were higher in Northern China compared with Southern China and high myopia and astigmatism were higher in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan than in mainland China. Regression analysis showed an upward trend in myopia and hyperopia and a downward trend in high myopia and astigmatism with years. Conclusions The prevalence of RE is higher in urban areas than in rural for Chinese children. The much higher prevalence of myopia and astigmatism in China compared with foreign countries indicates the important role played by environment and genetic factors. Considering the large magnitude of refractive errors, much more attention should still be paid to RE prevention and treatment strategy development in China.

Abstract
Background Myopia is a complex multifactorial condition which involves several overlapping signaling pathways mediated by distinct genes. This prospective cohort study evaluated the associations of two genetic variants in the TGF-β signaling pathway with the onset and progression of myopia and ocular biometric parameters in Chinese school-aged children. Methods A total of 556 second grade children were examined and followed up for 3.5 years. Non-cycloplegic refraction and ocular biometric parameters were measured annually. Multivariate regression analysis was used to assess the effect of the TGFBR1 rs10760673 and TGFB2-AS1 rs7550232 variants on the occurrence and progression of myopia. A 10,000 permutations test was used to correct for multiple testing. Functional annotation of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) was performed using RegulomeDB, HaploReg, and rVarBase. Results A total of 448 children were included in the analysis. After adjustments for gender, age, near work time and outdoor time with 10,000 permutations, the results indicated that the C allele and the AC or CC genotypes of rs7550232 adjacent to TGFB2-AS1 were associated with a significantly increased risk of the onset of myopia in two genetic models (additive: P’ = 0.022; dominant: P’ = 0.025). Additionally, the A allele and the AA or AG genotypes of rs10760673 of TGFBR1 were associated with a significant myopic shift (additive: P’ = 0.008; dominant: P’ = 0.028; recessive: P’ = 0.027). Furthermore, rs10760673 was associated with an increase in axial length (AL) (P’ = 0.013, β = 0.03) and a change in the ratio of AL to the corneal radius of curvature (AL/CRC) (P’ = 0.031, β = 0.003). Analysis using RegulomeDB, HaploReg, and rVarBase indicated that rs7550232 is likely to affect transcription factor binding, any motif, DNase footprint, and DNase peak. Conclusion The present study indicated that rs10760673 and rs7550232 may represent susceptibility loci for the progression and onset of myopia, respectively, in school-aged children. Associations of the variants of the TGFBR1 and TGFB2-AS1 genes with myopia may be mediated by the TGF-β signaling pathway; this hypothesis requires validation in functional studies. Abstract
The prevalence of myopia has markedly increased in East and Southeast Asia, and pathologic consequences of myopia, including myopic maculopathy and high myopia-associated optic neuropathy, are now some of the most common causes of irreversible blindness. Hence, strategies are warranted to reduce the prevalence of myopia and the progression to high myopia because this is the main modifiable risk factor for pathologic myopia. On the basis of published population-based and interventional studies, an important strategy to reduce the development of myopia is encouraging schoolchildren to spend more time outdoors. As compared with other measures, spending more time outdoors is the safest strategy and aligns with other existing health initiatives, such as obesity prevention, by promoting a healthier lifestyle for children and adolescents. Useful clinical measures to reduce or slow the progression of myopia include the daily application of low-dose atropine eye drops, in concentrations ranging between 0.01% and 0.05%, despite the side effects of a slightly reduced amplitude of accommodation, slight mydriasis, and risk of an allergic reaction; multifocal spectacle design; contact lenses that have power profiles that produce peripheral myopic defocus; and orthokeratology using corneal gas-permeable contact lenses that are designed to flatten the central cornea, leading to midperipheral steeping and peripheral myopic defocus, during overnight wear to eliminate daytime myopia. The risk-to-benefit ratio needs to be weighed up for the individual on the basis of their age, health, and lifestyle. The measures listed above are not mutually exclusive and are beginning to be examined in combination.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this cross-sectional observational study was to measure habitual viewing distance with smartphones in individuals of different ages, and to identify factors influencing viewing distance. MATERIAL Gender, reading position, forearm length, ametropia, correction modality, and near vision quality were investigated as factors affecting viewing distance. Participants were asked to read a typical text message on their own smartphone, while sitting and standing. A total of 233 subjects (129 females and 104 males), aged from 16 to 90 years old, were included and divided in two groups: 131 non-presbyopes (median 21.1, range 16 - 39), and 102 presbyopes (median 54.5, range 42 - 90). RESULTS Mean viewing distance was 36.1 ± 7.2 cm while sitting, and 37.4 ± 6.8 cm while standing (P < 0.05), and 36.8 +/- 6.6 cm overall. The average viewing distance was 35.0 ± 6.4 cm in non-presbyopes, and 39.0 ± 6.1 cm in presbyopes (P < 0.05). The average viewing distance was 34.7 ± 6.2 cm in females, and 38.2 ± 6.3 cm in males (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Significant differences between males and females were observed, due to the different average body size between the two gender groups. Average viewing distance with smartphones in presbyopes matched approximately to the typical near reading distance of 40 cm. In the non-presbyopic group, the accommodative demand when reading a smartphone was slightly higher than in the presbyopic group. High variability was observed in both age groups, without a statistically significant correlation with other assessed factors as reading position, ametropia, correction modality, and near vision quality.

PREVALENCE AND TIME TRENDS OF MYOPIA IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN CHINA: A Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis. Retina 2021; 40:399-411. Abstract
PURPOSE To estimate prevalence, associated factors, and time trends of myopia in Chinese children and adolescents. METHODS We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science for studies examining the prevalence of myopia in children and adolescents aged 3 years to 19 years in China before October 2018. We pooled the prevalence and associated factors for myopia and estimated time trends. RESULTS In 22 eligible studies including 192,569 individuals, the pooled prevalence (95% confidence interval [CI]) of myopia and high myopia in the study period from 1998 to 2016 was 37.7% (95% CI: 23.5-52.0%) and 3.1% (95% CI: 1.2-5.0%), respectively, with higher odds for girls than boys (myopia: odds ratio: 1.29; 95% CI: 1.14-1.46; P < 0.001; high myopia: odds ratio: 1.37; 95% CI: 1.05-1.78; P = 0.02) and with higher prevalences for urban areas than rural regions (myopia: 48.8% [95% CI: 32.3-65.3] vs. 31.9% [95% CI: 20.4-43.3; P < 0.001]). The pooled prevalence of myopia and high myopia increased from 4.7% (95% CI: 2.5-6.9) and 0.2% (95% CI: 0.0-0.5), respectively, in <7-years-olds to 56.2% (95% CI: 29.8-82.5) and 15.1% (95% CI: 6.4-23.8), respectively, in 16- to 18-year-olds. Myopic refractive error increased with older age (P < 0.001), female gender (P < 0.001), and study year (P = 0.003). Studies performed after 2013 showed a prevalence of myopia and high myopia in the 16- to 18-year-olds of 84.8% (95% CI: 84.4-85.2%) and 19.3% (95% CI: 18.6-20.2%), respectively. Assuming a further linear relationship with the study year, myopia prevalence in 2050 among children and adolescents aged 3 years to 19 years would be estimated to be about 84%. CONCLUSION The marked rise in high myopia prevalence among adolescents in China may be of importance for high myopia as risk factor for irreversible vision loss in Chinese adults in the future.

Abstract
Background Myopia is the leading cause of correctable visual impairment and preventable blindness worldwide. Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of myopia. Myopia is appearing with greater prevalence in young children. Objective This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of myopia among school children in Bahir Dar city, Northwest Ethiopia, 2019. Methods and materials A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among school children of 6 to 18 years of age in Bahir Dar city from October to November 2019. A pretested interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data among 634 participants using a multi-stage sampling technique from primary and secondary schools. Cycloplegic refraction was performed by optometrists for each student with 1% cyclopentolate eye drop, and subjective refraction was carried out to determine the final prescription of the students. Myopia was defined as spherical equivalent refractive error of ≥ 0.5 diopter in either eye. Data were entered into Epi Info version 7 and exported to Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23 for analysis. Tables, frequency, and mean were used for descriptive statistics. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were done to identify risk factors of myopia. Odds ratio with 95% confidence level was determined and variables with p–value of < 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results Among a total of 601 study participants, 51 (8.49%) were myopic. Age group of 10–13 years (AOR = 6.54: 95% CI = 5.56–10.86), 14–18 years (AOR = 6.32: 95% CI = 5.32–9.69), 2–4 hour per day mobile exposure (AOR = 3.69: 95% CI = 1.63–8.38), > 4 hour per day mobile exposure (AOR = 11.6: 95% CI = 4.41–30.42), near working distance of < 33 centimeter (AOR = 6.89: 95% CI = 2.71–17.56) and outdoor activity (AOR = 3.94: 95% CI = 1.87–8.31) were significantly associated with myopia. Conclusions The prevalence of myopia was high among school children in Bahir Dar city. Older age, longer duration of mobile exposure, shorter near working distance were the risk factors for the development of myopia whereas having outdoor activity was the protective factor.

Abstract
Purpose: To investigate corneal biomechanical response parameters in varying degrees of myopia and their correlation with corneal geometrical parameters and axial length. Methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, 172 eyes of 172 subjects, the severity degree of myopia was categorized into mild, moderate, severe, and extreme myopia. Cycloplegic refraction, corneal tomography using Pentacam HR, corneal biomechanical assessment using Corvis ST and Ocular Response Analyser (ORA), and ocular biometry using IOLMaster 700 were performed for all subjects. A general linear model was used to compare biomechanical parameters in various degrees of myopia, while central corneal thickness (CCT) and biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure (bIOP) were considered as covariates. Multiple linear regression was used to investigate the relationship between corneal biomechanical parameters with spherical equivalent (SE), axial length (AXL), bIOP, mean keratometry (Mean KR), and CCT. Results: Corneal biomechanical parameters assessed by Corvis ST that showed significant differences among the groups were second applanation length (AL2, p = 0.035), highest concavity radius (HCR, p < 0.001), deformation amplitude (DA, p < 0.001), peak distance (PD, p = 0.022), integrated inverse radius (IR, p < 0.001) and DA ratio (DAR, p = 0.004), while there were no significant differences in the means of pressure-derived parameters of ORA between groups. Multiple regression analysis showed all parameters of Corvis ST have significant relationships with level of myopia (SE, AXL, Mean KR), except AL1 and AL2. Significant biomechanical parameters showed progressive reduction in corneal stiffness with increasing myopia (either with greater negative SE or greater AXL), independent of IOP and CCT. Also, corneal hysteresis (CH) or ability to dissipate energy from the ORA decreased with increasing level of myopia. Conclusions: Dynamic corneal response assessed by Corvis ST shows evidence of biomechanical changes consistent with decreasing stiffness with increasing levels of myopia in multiple parameters. The strongest correlations were with highest concavity parameters where the sclera influence is maximal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To report the corneal elevation and thickness values for Saudi myopes and to evaluate the differences between these parameters in subgroups of this target population. Methods: Pentacam corneal topographic maps of the right eyes of patients visiting Al-Hokama Eye Clinic, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a tertiary eye center between January 2009 and December 2015 were retrospectively analyzed in this cross-sectional study. The patients were grouped into 3 categories based on their spherical readings: mild (-0.25 to -2.75D), moderate (-3.00 to -5.75D), and severe (≥-6.00D). Furthermore, patients with cylindrical readings of ≥-1.00 diopter were categorized as having myopic astigmatism, whereas those with less than -1.00 cylindrical diopter were categorized as having simple myopia. Results: Our sample was comprised of 1,276 patients; 838 (65.7%) had simple myopia and 438 (34.3%) had myopic astigmatism. The values for the whole myopic group were as follows: anterior corneal elevation (AE) at the apex= 2.60±1.48 (standard deviation), thinnest AE= 2.56±1.68, posterior elevation (PE) at the apex= 3.67±3.58, thinnest PE= 4.92±3.81, central pachymetry= 550.09±34.29, apical pachymetry=550.73±34.64, and thinnest pachymetry= 546.30±34.61. All of the measurements, except the apical PE and thinnest PE, were statistically significant across the simple and myopic astigmatism groups (p less than 0.05). Comparing the mild to moderate myopia groups revealed a significant difference in the apical AE (p=0.037). Moreover, the comparison between the mild and severe myopia groups revealed that the apical PE and the thinnest PE, as well as the central, apical, and thinnest pachymetry values were statistically significantly different (p less than 0.05). Conclusion: The corneal elevation indices and thicknesses specific to the Saudi myopes were found to be comparable to the international databases in terms of the elevation and thickness in some of the parameters.

Abstract
AIM To obtain the baseline data on presenting visual acuity (PVA) and evaluate the prevalence and associated factors for visual impairment based on PVA in 9070 Chinese college students. METHODS The freshmen at a university in southern China, including 6527 undergraduate students and 2543 graduate students, were investigated for some socio-demographic characteristics and underwent routine medical examination, including measuring PVA, height, and weight. Visual impairment was defined according to the new World Health Organization criteria for blindness and visual impairment. RESULTS In 9070 college students, the mean PVA in the better eye was 0.094±0.163 logMAR. The prevalence of visual impairment based on PVA was 2.7%. Only 38.3% college students had normal visual acuity [PVA equal to 0 logMAR (20/20) in both eyes]. There were 69.8% of students wearing spectacles. Logistic regression showed that home region (non-Guangdong provinces, P<0.0001, OR=1.70) was risk factor for visual impairment while BMI (P=0.001, OR=0.92) was protective factor from visual impairment. Ethnicity (Han Chinese, P<0.0001, OR=3.17) was risk factor for wearing spectacles while age (P=0.01, OR=0.90) was protective factor from wearing spectacles. CONCLUSION This study provides the baseline data on PVA and the prevalence of visual impairment in Chinese college students. Our analyses reveal that BMI and home region are associated factors for visual impairment based on PVA, while age and ethnicity are associated factors for wearing spectacles.

Abstract
PURPOSE To quantify the spatial distribution of relative corneal refractive power shift (RCRPS) to investigate its association with axial length growth. METHODS Eighty myopic children were randomly assigned for fitting with type A or B lenses. Axial lengths and corneal topographies were measured at baseline and the 1-, 6-, and 12-months follow-up visits. Treatment-zone decentrations and sizes were derived from tangential maps. RCRPSs were computed by taking the difference between after-treatment and baseline axial maps and then subtracting the apex value. Values at the same radius were averaged to obtain an RCRPS profile, from which four distributional parameters were extracted: the peak value (Rmax), the location where the profile first reached its half peak (X50), and the powers summed within 4- and 8-mm diameter areas (Sum4 and Sum8, respectively). Linear mixed models were used to analyse the correlation between the AL growth and the distributional parameters. RESULTS At baseline, no significant differences were observed between the two groups. After treatment, Axial length growth was significantly smaller in subjects fitted with type-B lenses (0.15 ± 0.16 vs 0.25 ± 0.22 mm, P = .028). Smaller treatment-zones (1.56 ± 0.14 vs 1.75 ± 0.13 mm, P < .01), smaller X50 values (1.56 ± 0.39 vs 1.98 ± 0.28 mm, P < .01), and greater Sum4 values (11.83 ± 6.47 vs 8.14 ± 5.06 D, P = .01) were also observed in subjects wearing type-B lenses. Among the distributional parameters, only X50 was significantly associated with AL growth in the multiple regression analysis (P = .005). CONCLUSION The spatial distribution of RCRPS is critical in retarding AL growth, and the ones reaching peak within a shorter distance from the apex may provide better myopia control.
