Abstract
Xanthine oxidase (XO) is an enzyme that converts hypoxanthine into xanthine and xanthine into uric acid, which is then eliminated by the kidneys. Serum XO has been linked to diabetes, hypertension, liver dysfunction, and cardiovascular diseases. However, limited information exists on the relationship between serum XO activity and MetS. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between XO activity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in an adult population group in Bangladesh A total of 601 participants aged ≥18 years were included in the study. MetS was defined based on the criteria set by the National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III). Serum XO activity was measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), while other biochemical parameters were measured using colorimetric methods. The relationship between serum XO and MetS levels was determined through multivariate logistic regression analysis. Serum XO activity was found to be significantly higher in females (6.17 ± 3.77 U/L) as compared to males (4.00 ± 2.77 U/L) (p < 0.001). Furthermore, participants with MetS had significantly higher mean levels of serum XO (5.34 ± 3.39 U/L) than those without MetS (3.86 ± 2.90 U/L) (p < 0.001). The prevalence of MetS and its components, such as blood pressure and blood glucose increased across the XO quartiles (p < 0.001). Regression analysis indicated that XO activity was significantly and independently associated with the prevalence of MetS (at least p < 0.05 for all cases) and its components, including elevated blood pressure, high blood glucose, and low HDL-C (at least p < 0.05 for all cases). In conclusion, individuals with MetS had significantly higher XO levels than those without MetS. Serum XO activity showed an independent association with MetS and some of its components. Therefore, XO might serve as a useful marker of MetS. Prospective studies are needed to determine the underlying mechanisms linking XO and MetS.

Abstract
Background There has been increasing evidence of the association between hyperuricemia and diabetes mellitus (DM). In the general population, hyperuricemia has been associated with pre-diabetes. In DM patients, hyperuricemia has been associated with poor outcomes. Objectives The objective was to determine the proportion of hyperuricemia and associated factors among patients with type 2 DM in Mwanza, Tanzania. Design This was a cross-sectional study. Methods This study was conducted from January to March 2023 among patients with type 2 DM attending clinic at Bugando Medical Centre, Mwanza. Data was obtained from a structured questionnaire. Serum uric acid, HbA1c, lipid profile, and renal functions were analyzed. Analysis was done via STATA version 17. The primary outcome was the proportion of hyperuricemia among patients with type 2 DM, and logistic regression models were used to analyze associated factors. Results Out of 360 patients, 59.7% were female. The median age was 61 years [IQR 57-68], and the median duration of DM was 5 years [IQR 3-9]. The mean HbA1c was 8.2 ± 2.5%, with 60% of patients having poor control. Most patients had hypertension (78.9%) and were overweight or obese (81.9%). The proportion of patients with DM and hyperuricemia was 44.4%, with mean serum uric acid levels among males and females of 410 ± 137 and 385 ± 119 µmol/L, respectively. We found that being female (P = .001), overweight (P = .021), or obese (P = .007), and having chronic kidney disease (P < .001) was associated with hyperuricemia among patients with type 2 DM. Conclusion The burden of hyperuricemia among type 2 DM patients is quite high, and it is associated with female gender, high body mass index, lipids, and chronic kidney disease. This calls for regular screening of hyperuricemia in the population, and more studies are needed to establish the outcomes associated with hyperuricemia and create a treatment guideline.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia, characterized by elevated levels of serum uric acid (SUA), is linked to a spectrum of commodities such as gout, cardiovascular diseases, renal disorders, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes, etc. Significantly impairing the quality of life for those affected, the prevalence of hyperuricemia is an upward trend globally, especially in most developed countries. UA possesses a multifaceted role, such as antioxidant, pro-oxidative, pro-inflammatory, nitric oxide modulating, anti-aging, and immune effects, which are significant in both physiological and pathological contexts. The equilibrium of circulating urate levels hinges on the interplay between production and excretion, a delicate balance orchestrated by urate transporter functions across various epithelial tissues and cell types. While existing research has identified hyperuricemia involvement in numerous biological processes and signaling pathways, the precise mechanisms connecting elevated UA levels to disease etiology remain to be fully elucidated. In addition, the influence of genetic susceptibilities and environmental determinants on hyperuricemia calls for a detailed and nuanced examination. This review compiles data from global epidemiological studies and clinical practices, exploring the physiological processes and the genetic foundations of urate transporters in depth. Furthermore, we uncover the complex mechanisms by which the UA induced inflammation influences metabolic processes in individuals with hyperuricemia and the association with its relative disease, offering a foundation for innovative therapeutic approaches and advanced pharmacological strategies.

Abstract
Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common disease caused by a variety of causes. Is uric acid associated with the onset of AP? The objective of this study was to assess whether uric acid concentration in AP patients was higher than that in healthy population, and whether there were associations between uric acid concentration and serological indicators related to AP. A total of 205 AP patients were included in this study. Two hundred and five people who underwent physical examination in our hospital were randomly selected as controls. We analyzed whether there was difference in uric acid concentrations between the two groups. If the difference was statistically significant, the correlations between uric acid concentration and serological indicators in AP patients was further analyzed. There was significant difference in uric acid concentration (P < 0.001) between AP patients and healthy population. Serum uric acid concentration in AP group was significantly higher than that in control group. Two hundred and five AP patients were divided into mild AP group and non-mild AP group. There was no statistically significant difference in uric acid concentration between the two groups (P = 0.176). There was a low linear correlation between serum uric acid concentration and triglyceride level (r = 0.316, P < 0.001). But there was no linear correlation between serum uric acid concentration and hypersensitive C-reactive protein (r = 0.126, P = 0.072), white blood cell (r = 0.192, P = 0.006), albumin (r = 0.183, P = 0.009), total cholesterol concentration (r = 0.133, P = 0.058), fasting blood-glucose (r = 0.133, P = 0.058) and blood calcium (r = 0.155, P = 0.026). Uric acid concentration in patients with AP was significantly higher than healthy population. There was correlation between uric acid concentration and triglyceride in AP patients.

Abstract
AIMS Uric acid has been associated with several metabolic conditions, including bone diseases. Our objective here was to consider the relationship between serum uric acid levels and various bone parameters (bone mineral density, ultrasonographic parameters, vitamin D, PTH and serum calcium), as well as the prevalence and risk of fragility fracture. METHODS An observational and cross-sectional study carried out on 679 postmenopausal women, classified into 3 groups according to their serum uric acid levels, in whom bone densitometry, calcaneus ultrasounds, PTH, vitamin D and serum calcium analysis were done. Bone fractures were collected through the clinical history and lateral spinal X-ray. RESULTS Higher uric acid levels were found in women with older age, high BMI, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Higher levels of PTH and serum calcium were also observed, but did not effect on vitamin D. Serum uric acid was positively related to densitometric and ultrasonic parameters and negatively associated with vertebral fractures. CONCLUSIONS In the population of postmenopausal women studied, sUA levels were correlated with BMD, BUA, and QUI-Stiffness, and this correlation was independent of age and BMI. In addition, sUA was associated with a decrease in vertebral fractures. These results imply a beneficial influence of sUA on bone metabolism, with both a quantitative and qualitative positive effect, reflected in the lower prevalence of vertebral fractures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE An alterable risk factor for hyperuricemia is obesity. Additionally, obese people may have a moderate form of acquired resistance to thyroid hormones. Thyrotropin, thyroid hormones, and obesity all interact subtly. However, the connection between thyroid hormone sensitivity and hyperuricemia in obese patients both before and after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has not yet been clarified. The objective of our study was to investigate the connection between impaired thyroid hormone sensitivity and elevated uric acid (UA) levels before and after LSG. METHODS In total, 1054 euthyroid patients with obesity (481 males, 573 females), 248 (143 female patients) of whom underwent subsequent LSG, were enrolled in this retrospective study. Anthropometric measurements and thyroid hormone and UA levels were taken before and 3 months after LSG. RESULTS Female patients with obesity with impaired sensitivity to thyroid hormones had higher UA levels (P for trend <.01). The odds ratio of the fourth vs first quartile of thyroid feedback quantile index, thyrotropin index, and thyrotropin-thyroxine resistance index were 4.285 (confidence interval: 1.360-13.507), 3.700 (confidence interval: 1.276-10.729), and 2.839 (confidence interval: 1.014-7.948), respectively, with robust relationships with female hyperuricemia (all P < .05). However, there was only a positive correlation between the decline in UA levels and thyroid feedback quantile index, thyrotropin, and thyrotropin-thyroxine resistance index in female patients following LSG. CONCLUSION Female hyperuricemia is correlated with higher thyroid hormone resistance index scores. Resistance to thyroid hormones was greatly improved by LSG. The decrease in UA levels after surgery is correlated with the improvement of thyroid hormone resistance after LSG.

Abstract
Purpose In clinical work, it has been found that the prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA) is significantly higher in younger patients with psychiatric disorders, but there are few studies in this area. The present study aims to evaluate the prevalence of HUA and the relationship between the HUA and age in hospitalized patients with psychiatric disorders in the real world, and to provide a theoretical basis for clinical staff to pay attention to the metabolic indicators of younger patients and for future related studies. Methods This is a cross-sectional evaluation of a cohort of 1761 patients with psychiatric disorders of hospitalized. The categories of disorders designed for study included: Depression, Bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive disorder, Acute and transient psychotic disorder, Dissociative(conversion) disorders, Conduct disorders and Tic disorders. In addition, based on age, the participants are stratified into three groups. The authors used Kruskal-Wallis tests, chi-square tests, and multiple linear logistic regression to verify the relationship between HUA and age among hospitalized patients with psychiatric disorders. Results Overall, the estimated prevalence of HUA was 35.4%. The prevalence of HUA was significantly higher in individuals with 17 years and under compared to those with 45 years and above (P < 0.001). After adjusting for confounders, the prevalence of HUA remained higher at 17 years and under than at 45 years and above. Bipolar disorder can lead to an increased prevalence of HUA (P<0.05). Conclusion The prevalence of HUA was higher in hospitalized patients with psychiatric disorders, and the prevalence was inversely proportional to age.

Abstract
Background The agreement on the identification of sarcopenic obesity remains elusive, and its association with hyperuricemia remains unestablished. This study sought to evaluate the agreement of low lean mass (LLM) with obesity and its correlation with hyperuricemia. Methods A total of 25,252 study participants, comprising 4,597 individuals with hyperuricemia, were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey spanning the years 1999-2006 and 2011-2018. LLM with obesity was characterized by the coexistence of LLM, determined by the ratio of appendicular lean mass to body mass index (BMI), and three categories of obesity including BMI, body fat percentage (BF%), and waist circumference (WC). We employed Cohen's kappa to evaluate the agreement among the different diagnostic criteria and implemented survey multiple logistic regression and stratified analyses to explicate the connection between LLM with obesity and the risk of hyperuricemia. Results When defining obesity using BF%, BMI, and WC, the prevalence of LLM with obesity varied from 6.6 to 10.1%, with moderate-to-strong agreement. In the fully adjusted model, individuals with LLM or any of the three types of obesity exhibited notably elevated odds of developing hyperuricemia. Likewise, participants with LLM and obesity had 2.70 (LLM + BMI), 2.44 (LLM + BF%), and 3.12 (LLM + WC) times the risk of hyperuricemia, respectively, compared with healthy individuals. The association between LLM with obesity and hyperuricemia remained stable and significant across different age and sex subgroups. Conclusion When employing the three definitions of obesity, the incidence of LLM with obesity was not high, and the diagnostic agreement was relatively good. The participants with LLM and obesity exhibited an increased risk of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Background Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a gynaecological problem affecting women within reproductive age, accompanied by several metabolic anomalies, thus leading to alteration in kidney function and hyperuricaemia. Due to the high prevalence of cardiometabolic factors in PCOS, there is a need to anticipate an increased number of kidney impairments amongst these women. Objectives This review aims to investigate the potential link between PCOS, impaired kidney function, and elevated uric acid levels. By elucidating this association, we hope to provide clinicians with a tool to stratify the risk of kidney disease in women diagnosed with PCOS, based on readily available kidney function parameters. Materials and Methods The recommendations used for the analysis were outlined in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines. Subsequently, eligible studies were identified using several databases (MEDLINE, ProQuest and EBSCOhost) between 1996 and 2022, with a total of 13 studies included. Serum uric acid, serum creatinine, as well as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were evaluated as the outcome of interest. Quality assessment for cohort, case-control and cross-sectional studies was conducted utilising the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, while Review Manager 5.4 was utilised for meta-analysis. Results Uric acid was significantly higher in women with PCOS (mean difference [MD] = 0.70, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.45-0.95], P < 0.00001). Meanwhile, serum creatinine and eGFR were statistically similar in each group (MD = 0.08, 95% CI [-0.05-0.21], P = 0.22 and MD = 3.54, 95% CI [-4.53-11.61], P = 0.39, respectively). Interpretation This review showed that PCOS was significantly associated with elevated uric acid. However, no significant difference was found between eGFR and creatinine levels compared to healthy controls. Routine uric acid assessment in PCOS patients is recommended as a simple tool for risk stratification. Limitations No body mass index (BMI) subgroup analysis was done due to limited BMI reporting in our included studies. Quantitative analysis of all kidney function parameters was also limited by sparse data on urea and albumin. PROSPERO Registration Number CRD42023410092 (02 April 2023).

Abstract
Bariatric surgery (BS) has been a significant means of reducing weight in obese individuals. The metabolic changes after bariatric surgery are crucial as they extend its advantages beyond weight loss. As its name implies, "metabolic surgery" also addresses obesity-related metabolic concerns. Bariatric surgery has always been associated with lessened serum uric acid (SUA) levels. In this review, we examined current studies to understand how surgical therapies impact serum uric acid levels. Strongly minded on the extent and timing of changes in the level of serum uric acid after bariatric surgeries. We conducted a comprehensive search for relevant current studies in PubMed, Google Scholar, JAMA, and the Cochrane Library until February 1, 2024. We aimed to analyze the metabolic advantages of bariatric surgery, focusing on its function in treating hyperuricemia and lowering the risk of associated disorders. Our review elaborates on factors contributing to decreased serum uric acid levels after bariatric surgery, such as alterations in renal function, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory markers.

Abstract
Objective Obesity has become a global health issue and a risk factor for hyperuricemia. However, the associations between obesity and hyperuricemia are sometimes confounding. In the present study, we performed mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to study their relationship and investigate the underlying mechanism by network pharmacology. Method Body mass index (BMI) and uric acid related to single nucleotide polymorphism were selected as instrumental variables for MR analysis. Three robust analytical methods are used for bidirectional MR analysis such as inverse-variance weighting, weighted median and MR-Egger regression. Then, we further performed sensitivity analysis to evaluate the horizontal pleiotropy, heterogeneities, and stability. The targets related to obesity and hyperuricemia were collected, screened and further conducted for Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment to explore the mechanism of obesity and hyperuricemia using network pharmacology. Results The positive causality was indicated between BMI and hyperuricemia based on inverse variance-weighted analysis [odds ratio:1.23, 95% confidence interval: 1.11 to 1.30 for each standard deviation increase in BMI (4.6 kg/m2)]. Conversely, hyperuricemia did not influence BMI. 235 intersected targets from obesity and hyperuricemia were collected. Insulin resistance were the top 1 key target. The mechanism between obesity and hyperuricemia are associated with important pathways including adipocytokine signaling pathway, insulin resistance and cholesterol metabolism et al. Conclusions Our MR analysis supported the causal association between obesity and hyperuricemia based on availablegenome-wide association analysis summary statistics. Obesity leads to hyperuricemia via insulin resistance, which is a key link in the huge network pathways using network pharmacology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Elevated liver enzyme levels are suggested to be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies have explored the relationship between liver enzymes and myocardial infarction (MI). This study aimed to evaluate the potential association of elevated liver enzymes with MI within a population group in Bangladesh. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 348 participants were enrolled, 189 with MI in the CVD group and 159 in the control group. Serum levels of liver enzymes (AST, ALT and GGT) and other biochemical parameters were measured using standard methods. Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to determine the associations between elevated liver enzymes and CVD. RESULT In the CVD group, 51.6%, 30.9% and 67.7% of individuals had elevated serum AST, ALT and GGT levels, respectively. On the contrary, the control group had 17.0%, 15.1% and 35.2% of individuals with high serum AST, ALT and GGT levels, respectively. Overall, 71.8% of the subjects in the CVD group and 44.7% of the subjects in the control group had at least one or more elevated liver enzymes (p < 0.001). The mean level of all three liver enzymes was significantly higher in the CVD group than in the control group (p < 0.001). In both the CVD and control groups, males had higher levels of liver enzymes than females. In the regression models, the serum levels of AST, ALT and GGT showed a positive and independent association with the prevalence of CVD (p < 0.001). However, GGT showed the strongest association among the three enzymes. CONCLUSIONS This study shows a high prevalence of liver enzyme abnormalities in individuals with CVD. Serum levels of AST, ALT and GGT were independently associated with the prevalence of CVD. This suggests that measuring liver enzyme levels could be a useful marker in predicting CVD at an early stage.

Abstract
Diet-based models are commonly used to investigate obesity and related disorders. We conducted a comparative profiling of three obesogenic diets HFD, high fat diet; HFHF, high fat high fructose diet; and HFCD, high fat choline deficient diet to assess their impact on the gut microbiome and metabolome. After 20 weeks, we analyzed the gut microbiota and metabolomes of liver, plasma, cecal, and fecal samples. Fecal and plasma bile acids (BAs) and fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were also examined. Significant changes were observed in fecal and cecal metabolites, with increased Firmicutes and decreased Bacteroidetes in the HFD, HFHF, and HFCD-fed mice compared to chow and LFD (low fat diet)-fed mice. Most BAs were reduced in plasma and fecal samples of obese groups, except taurocholic acid, which increased in HFCD mice's plasma. SCFAs like acetate and butyrate significantly decreased in obesogenic diet groups, while propionic acid specifically decreased in the HFCD group. Pathway analysis revealed significant alterations in amino acid, carbohydrate metabolism, and nucleic acid biosynthesis pathways in obese mice. Surprisingly, even LFD-fed mice showed distinct changes in microbiome and metabolite profiles compared to the chow group. This study provides insights into gut microbiome dysbiosis and metabolite alterations induced by obesogenic and LFD diets in various tissues. These findings aid in selecting suitable diet models to study the role of the gut microbiome and metabolites in obesity and associated disorders, with potential implications for understanding similar pathologies in humans.

Abstract
Background and Aims Hyperuricemia constitutes a major public health issue due to its implication in many chronic diseases and metabolic syndromes. We propose to study the prevalence and associated factors of hyperuricemia to diagnose asymptomatic patients and make prognoses on the state of health of the patients. Methods An analytic cross-sectional study has been carried out at the Bafoussam Regional Hospital and the Biochemistry laboratory of the Université des Montagnes over 2 months. Sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristic was obtained; a blood sample was collected from the chosen patients and a biochemical test (uric acid, creatinine, urea, total cholesterol, high density lipoproteins cholesterol, triglyceride) was analyzed by spectrophotometric method. Statistical tests were carried out using SPSS statistical software. Logistic regression analyses identified factors associated with variables of interest. The significance was measured by a p < 0.05 with a confidential level of 95%. Results The patient population was made up of 100 patients. The sex ratio was 1.22 in favor of men. The prevalence of hyperuricemia in our study was 28.0% with 31.1% in women and 27.3% in men. The mean average of uric acid in the hyperuricemia population was 7.50 ± 1.24 mg/L and the normal uricemia population was 4.69 ± 1.49 mg/L (p < 0.0001). The mean average triglyceride in the hyperuricemia population was 143 ± 14 and 117.55 ± 55.52 mg/dL in normal uricemia with p = 0.046. Age range [35-45] and hypertriglyceridemia have been associated with hyperuricemia with respectively (odds ratio [OR] = 4.07, p < 0.015) confidence interval, CI: [0.89: 97.0]) and ([OR = 2.50, p < 0.046] CI: [1.01: 6.09]). Conclusion The prevalence of hyperuricemia was relatively high and has been associated with metabolic disorders in the population. It is necessary to focus on early diagnoses, treatment, and early intervention in view to prevent chronic diseases associated with hyperuricemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While dyslipidemia has been recognized as a potential risk factor for hyperuricemia, there is currently a dearth of large-scale data specifically focused on studying the relationship between these two conditions. To address this gap, the present study analyzed a dataset of 298,891 physical examination records to investigate in greater detail the clinical classification and compositional relationship between hyperuricemia and dyslipidemia. METHODS For this investigation, a cross-sectional research design was utilized to analyze physical examination data that was gathered from Yijishan Hospital in Wuhu, China between 2011 and 2016. Logistic regression was employed to examine the association between hyperuricemia and dyslipidemia. Furthermore, the association between hyperuricemia and dyslipidemia was evaluated based on the clinical classifications of dyslipidemia and its components. RESULTS A total of 298,891 participants from China (124,886 [41.8%] females) were included in the study, with an age range of 18 to 90 years (mean [SD]: 47.76 [13.54] years). In multivariate analysis, the odds of hyperuricemia was 1.878 times higher in patients with dyslipidemia compared to those without dyslipidemia (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.835-1.922). In the clinical classification of dyslipidemia, individuals with hypertriglyceridemia and mixed hyperlipidemia had 1.753 times (95% CI: 1.706-1.802) and 1.925 times (95% CI: 1.870-1.982) higher odds of hyperuricemia, respectively, compared to those without dyslipidemia. Among the components of dyslipidemia, the odds ratios for hyperuricemia in individuals in the fourth quartile compared to those in the first quartile were 3.744 (95% CI: 3.636-3.918) for triglycerides, 1.518 (95% CI: 1.471-1.565) for total cholesterol, and 1.775 (95% CI: 1.718 - 1.833) for non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS Dyslipidemia has been independently linked with hyperuricemia. Moreover, the elevation of triglycerides or total cholesterol levels, including conditions such as hypertriglyceridemia and mixed hyperlipidemia, have been observed to have a positive association with the development of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of hyperuricaemia (HUA) and investigate its risk factors in the general adult population of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region (NHAR), China. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Survey of cardiovascular disorders and their related risk factors in NHAR, China. PARTICIPANTS 10 803 permanent residents aged 18 and older. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES HUA was defined as serum uric acid levels >420 µmol/L for men and >360 µmol/L for women. RESULTS The overall prevalence of HUA in NHAR adults was 19.81% (95% CI 19.06 to 20.57), with prevalence values of 24.91% (95% CI 23.70 to 26.14) in men and 15.58% (95% CI 14.66 to 16.53, p<0.001) in women. The prevalence of HUA was higher in urban residents than in rural residents (23.26% vs 17.02%, p<0.001). HUA prevalence was relatively high in individuals younger than 30 years for both men and women, then decreased with age, and began to increase at the age of 40 for women and 60 for men. Higher level of education, being overweight or obese, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes, higher triglycerides, higher total cholesterol and poorer renal function were associated with an increased risk of HUA. CONCLUSIONS HUA prevalence is high among adults in NHAR. Young adults under 30 years and women over 50 years were identified as populations at high risk for HUA. Further attention ought to be placed to promoting healthy diets and implementing early interventions to manage dyslipidaemia, obesity and blood glucose level, as well as advocating for moderation of alcohol consumption.

Abstract
Hypertension remains a global threat to public health, affecting the worldwide population. It is one of the most common risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Today's treatments focus on creating a hypotensive effect. However, there is a constant search for additional factors to reduce the potential of developing hypertension complications. These factors may act as a parallel treatment target with a beneficial effect in specific populations. Some studies suggest that uric acid may be considered such a factor. This study investigated the potential effect of uric acid concentrations over 5 mg/dL on the incidence of hypertension complications among patients with very high cardiovascular risk. A total of 705 patients with hypertension and very high cardiovascular risk were selected and included in the analysis. The patients were divided and compared according to serum uric acid levels. The study showed a higher occurrence of heart failure (OR = 1.7898; CI: 1.2738-2.5147; p = 0.0008), atrial fibrillation (OR = 3.4452; CI: 1.5414-7.7002; p = 0.0026) and chronic kidney disease (OR = 2.4470; CI: 1.3746-4.3558; p = 0.0024) among individuals with serum uric acid levels over 5 mg/dL, males and those with a BMI > 25 kg/m2. These findings suggest that even serum uric acid concentrations over 5 mg/dL may affect the prevalence of hypertension-related complications among patients with very high cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the association between serum liver enzymes and the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Bangladeshi adults. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 602 participants (424 males and 178 females) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Serum levels of liver enzymes (ALT, AST, GGT and ALP) and other biochemical parameters were measured by standard colorimetric methods. The relationship between liver enzymes and MetS was assessed by multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS Overall, the prevalence of MetS was 34.9% among the participants. Of the four liver enzymes, the mean levels of serum ALT and GGT were significantly higher among subjects with MetS than those without MetS (p < 0.01). When liver enzyme levels were categorized into normal and elevated ranges, MetS and its component's prevalence was higher in the elevated group except for ALP. Serum ALT and GGT showed a significant relationship with the maximum components of MetS. According to the logistic regression analysis, elevated levels of ALT and GGT were significantly associated with the prevalence of MetS (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS This study showed that elevated ALT and GGT levels were independently associated with MetS and its components.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the associations between obesity parameters and the risk of hyperuricemia among Korean adults by sex, age, and diabetes mellitus status. METHODS This study analyzed data from 17,753 adults from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016-2018. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and general and abdominal obesity with the risk of hyperuricemia (serum uric acid ≥7.0 mg/dL in men and ≥6.0 mg/dL in women). RESULTS Of all the participants, 12.7% (n = 2256) had hyperuricemia. The age-adjusted mean serum uric acid levels increased significantly with increasing BMI and WC (P for trend <0.001). The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of hyperuricemia increased as BMI and WC increased in both sexes (P for trend <0.001). General (OR 1.98, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.69-2.32) and abdominal (OR 2.21, 95% CI: 1.89-2.58) obesity in men and general (OR 3.26, 95% CI: 2.60-4.09) and abdominal (OR 3.43, 95% CI: 2.69-4.37) obesity in women were associated with higher risks of hyperuricemia. These associations were prominent in women. The association between abdominal obesity and hyperuricemia persisted after additional adjustments for BMI in both sexes. Significant interactions were observed in younger adults and individuals without diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSION Increased BMI and WC, and general and abdominal obesity, may be important risk factors for hyperuricemia in both sexes. Women, young adults, and individuals without diabetes mellitus require particular attention to prevent obesity and hyperuricemia.

Abstract
This study is aimed at evaluating the correlation between the skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) of different body parts and hyperuricemia in females with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thus, providing scientific guidance on lifestyle self-management for patients with PCOS. The cross-sectional study included 171 patients with PCOS, which were divided into two distinct sub-groups based on the presence or absence of hyperuricemia. Anthropometric and serological characteristics of the population with PCOS focusing on skeletal muscle mass were conducted. PCOS patients with hyperuricemia had significantly greater SMI in different body parts. Further binary logistic regression analysis revealed that SMI of the bilateral lower limbs was positively associated with hyperuricemia with an adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 1.235 (1.103 - 1.384), p < 0.001. The optimal cut-off value of SMI of the bilateral lower limbs in predicting hyperuricemia was 5.11 (Youden index = 0.490). Combined with the mean value of SMI in the bilateral upper limbs, the safe range of SMI of the bilateral lower limbs in patients with PCOS was calculated as 3.64 - 5.11, with the sensitivity and negative predictive values being 83.9% and 65.1%, respectively. Excessively increased SMI of the bilateral lower limbs was correlated with hyperuricemia in patients with PCOS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In cinical, some acute pancreatitis patients with diabetes may have diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). However, the risk factors for DKA in these patients remain unclear. The purpose of this study is to analyze the risk factors for DKA in acute pancreatitis patients with type 2 diabetes. PATIENTS AND METHODS Twenty-five patients were included in this prospective single-centre study to analyze the incidence and risk factors for DKA in acute pancreatitis patients with type 2 diabetes. RESULTS Seven of the twenty-five patients (28%) developed DKA within 48 h of admission. According to whether they had DKA, the twenty-five AP patients were divided into DKA group and non-DKA group. There were significant differences in age (P = 0.014), BMI (P = 0.034), poor previous blood glucose control (P < 0.001) and uric acid concentration (P = 0.041), but no statistically significant differences in sex (P = 0.597), number of drinkers (P = 0.407), number of smokers (P = 1.000), triglyceride level (P = 0.389) and total cholesterol concentration (P = 0.534) between the two groups. In both groups, 1 patients had severe pancreatitis, and the difference was no statistically significant (P = 0.490). CONCLUSIONS The incidence of DKA in AP patients with diabetes is high. Age, BMI, worse glycemic control and uric acid concentration may be predictors of DKA in AP patients with diabetes.

Abstract
The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) is rapidly increasing worldwide and is promoted as a smoking cessation tool. The impact of traditional cigs on human health has been well-defined in both animal and human studies. In contrast, little is known about the adverse effects of e-cigs exposure on human health. This review summarizes the impact of e-cigs exposure on different organ systems based on the rapidly expanding recent evidence from experimental and human studies. A number of growing studies have shown the adverse effects of e-cigs exposure on various organ systems. The summarized data in this review indicate that while e-cigs use causes less adverse effects on different organs compared to traditional cigs, its long-term exposure may lead to serious health effects. Data on short-term organ effects are limited and there is no sufficient evidence on long-term organ effects. Moreover, the adverse effects of secondhand and third hand e-cigs vapour exposure have not been thoroughly investigated in previous studies. Although some studies demonstrated e-cigs used as a smoking cessation tool, there is a lack of strong evidence to support it. While some researchers suggested e-cigs as a safer alternative to tobacco smoking, their long-term exposure health effects remain largely unknown. Therefore, more epidemiological and prospective studies including mechanistic studies are needed to address the potential adverse health effects of e-cigs to draw a firm conclusion about their safe use. A wide variation in e-cigs products and the lack of standardized testing methods are the major barriers to evaluating the existing data. Specific regulatory guidelines for both e-cigs components and the manufacturing process may be effective to protect consumer health.

Abstract
Obesity is a major risk factor for hypertension, type 2 diabetes and other morbidities. On the other hand, hypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease. The presence of obesity in hypertensive persons increases cardiovascular risk and related mortality. Data on the prevalence of obesity and hypertension in academic staff in Bangladesh are scarce. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with obesity and hypertension among university academic staff in Bangladesh. In total, 352 academic staff were enrolled in this study from two universities in Bangladesh. A pre-structured questionnaire was used to obtain data on anthropometric, demographic and lifestyle-related factors. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the factors associated with obesity and hypertension. Overall, the prevalence of general and abdominal obesity and hypertension was 26.7%, 46.9% and 33.7%, respectively. Female staff had a significantly higher prevalence of both general and abdominal obesity (41% and 64.1%, respectively) than male staff (21.5% and 34.9%, respectively) (p < 0.001). In contrast, male staff had a higher prevalence of hypertension (36.9%) than female staff (25.6%)(p < 0.001). An increased prevalence of hypertension was found in the higher BMI and WC groups of the participants. The prevalence of general obesity, abdominal obesity and hypertension was higher in the 30-40 years, > 50 years and 41-50 years age groups, respectively. According to the regression analysis, female gender and inadequate physical activity were independently associated with general and abdominal obesity. On the other hand, increased age, BMI, WC, presence of diabetes and smoking showed a significant association with hypertension. In conclusion, the prevalence of obesity and hypertension was higher among university academic staff members in Bangladesh. Our findings suggest that comprehensive screening programs are needed to facilitate the diagnosis, control, and prevention of obesity and hypertension in high-risk population groups.

Abstract
Introduction Polydatin is a biologically active compound found in mulberries, grapes, and Polygonum cuspidatum, and it has uric acid-lowering effects. However, its urate-lowering effects and the molecular mechanisms underlying its function require further study. Methods In this study, a hyperuricemic rat model was established to assess the effects of polydatin on uric acid levels. The body weight, serum biochemical indicators, and histopathological parameters of the rats were evaluated. A UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap mass spectrometry-based metabolomics approach was applied to explore the potential mechanisms of action after polydatin treatment. Results The results showed a trend of recovery in biochemical indicators after polydatin administration. In addition, polydatin could alleviate damage to the liver and kidneys. Untargeted metabolomics analysis revealed clear differences between hyperuricemic rats and the control group. Fourteen potential biomarkers were identified in the model group using principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis. These differential metabolites are involved in amino acid, lipid, and energy metabolism. Of all the metabolites, the levels of L-phenylalanine, L-leucine, O-butanoylcarnitine, and dihydroxyacetone phosphate decreased, and the levels of L-tyrosine, sphinganine, and phytosphingosine significantly increased in hyperuricemic rats. After the administration of polydatin, the 14 differential metabolites could be inverted to varying degrees by regulating the perturbed metabolic pathway. Conclusion This study has the potential to enhance our understanding of the mechanisms of hyperuricemia and demonstrate that polydatin is a promising potential adjuvant for lowering uric acid levels and alleviating hyperuricemia-related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To examine the association between elevated serum uric acid (SUA) levels and the rapid decline in kidney function by conducting a retrospective cohort study on a physically healthy population in Urumqi, China. METHODS A cohort study of 2,802 physically healthy people with a normal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was investigated from 2018 to 2021. The examination procedure included using questionnaires, taking physical measurements, and blood sampling. The rapid decline in kidney function was defined as eGFR > 5 mL·min-1 ·(1.73 m2 )-1 year. The relationship between elevated SUA levels and the rapid decline in kidney function was assessed. RESULTS When performing the three-year retrospective analysis, 688 (28.55%) cases experienced a rapid decline in kidney function, and 52 (1.9%) cases developed chronic kidney disease (CKD). They were divided into the stable group and the rapidly declining kidney function group according to eGFR > 15 mL·min-1·(1.73 m2 )-1. The comparison revealed a greater increase in uric acid in the rapidly declining kidney function group [0.30 (-0.29, 0.82) mg/dL vs. - 0.07(-0.54, 0.37) mg/dL, Z = - 8.822, P < 0.001]. The participants were further divided into four groups according to their uric acid levels in 2018 and 2021, which included the normal to normal (N-N) group, the normal to hyperuricemia (HUA) (N-H) group, the HUA to normal (H-N) group, and the persistently HUA (H-H) group. The decrease in eGFR was significantly higher in the N-H group than in the other three groups (χ2 = 20.580, P < 0.001). The results of the multifactorial logistic regression analysis showed that elevated uric acid was a risk factor for the rapid decline in kidney function (OR = 1.640, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Elevated SUA levels were a risk factor for the rapid decline in kidney function in the Chinese health examination population. Higher SUA levels might predict the occurrence of progressive kidney impairment.

Abstract
Introduction Prevalence of obesity is high in diabetes mellitus (DM) and is associated with hyperuricemia (HU), hypertension, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and dyslipidemia. In obesity, elevated serum uric acid (SUA) has been shown to be associated in many studies from different countries, but data from India are lacking. The aim of the present study is to know the prevalence of obesity and to know the relationship between obesity and SUA in newly onset DM. Methods In this cross-sectional study from India, 402 consecutive newly onset diabetic patients (male: 284; female: 118) were enrolled. All patients were grouped into four based on BMI (body mass index): underweight (<18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (18.5-23 kg/m2), overweight (>23-27.5 kg/m2), and obese (>27.5 kg/m2). All participants were grouped into four quartiles based on SUA (Q1: <4.23; Q2: ≥4.24-5.19; Q3: ≥5.20-6.16; Q4: >6.16). Results The mean age, BMI and SUA of the participants were 46.20±0.52 years, 26.35±0.21 kg/m2 and 5.24±0.007 mg/dl, respectively. Overall prevalence of generalized obesity, central obesity and hyperuricemia (HU) were 35.07%, 85.82% and 13.43%, respectively. The prevalence of generalized obesity increased across the SUA quartile. A multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that serum uric acid level was independently associated with generalized obesity (p<0.001). Conclusion This first report from India shows a significant positive association between SUA and generalized obesity among newly onset DM. Therefore, routine estimation of SUA is recommended in newly onset DM to prevent and treat HU and its related complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Uric acid, a formerly-known antioxidant that has recently been linked to numerous inflammatory diseases as a pro-inflammatory and -oxidative mediator in pathological conditions. It is imperative to reassess the association between periodontitis and uric acid locally and systematically. The aim of this systematic review was to systemically evaluate the association between periodontitis and the uric acid (UA) levels in blood, saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). METHODS Relevant clinical studies up to January 28, 2023 were identified and retrieved from electronic databases including PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE and Web of Science, with periodontitis, uric acid, hyperuricemia and gout as the keywords. The weighted (WMD) or standardized mean difference (SMD) was calculated using fixed- or random-effect models. Methodological heterogeneity was assessed. RESULTS Sixteen eligible observational studies and one RCT were enrolled, which included 1354 patients with periodontitis and 989 controls. Three sample types for UA detection were involved, including blood (n = 8), saliva (n = 9) and GCF (n = 1). Meta-analysis demonstrated an enhanced plasma UA concentration (WMD = 1.00 mg/dL, 95% CI 0.63 to 1.37, P < 0.001) but a decreased salivary UA level (SMD = -0.95, 95% CI -1.23 to -0.68, P < 0.001) in periodontitis versus control. Statistical heterogeneity among the plasma- and saliva-tested studies were moderate (I2 = 58.3%, P = 0.066) and low (I2 = 33.8%, P = 0.196), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of the enrolled studies, it seems that there is an association between periodontitis and increased blood UA and decreased salivary UA. (Registration no. Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine trends in serum uric acid (SUA) levels over a recent 5-year period according to age, sex, obesity, and abdominal obesity among Korean children and adolescents. We conducted a serial cross-sectional analysis using nationally representative data from the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey from 2016 to 2020. The study outcome was trends in SUA levels. SUA trends were analyzed by survey-weighted linear regression analysis considering the survey year as a continuous variable. SUA trends were also analyzed for subgroups based on age, sex, abdominal obesity, or obesity. This study included 3,554 children and adolescents aged 10-18 years. SUA increased significantly over the study period in boys (p for trend = 0.043), but not in girls (p for trend = 0.300). In age-specific analyses, SUA increased significantly in the 10-12 years group (p for trend = 0.029). After adjusting for age, SUA increased significantly in the obese group of both boys (p for trend = 0.026) and girls (p for trend = 0.023), but not in the overweight, normal, or under-weight groups of either sex. After adjusting for age, SUA increased significantly in the abdominal obesity group of boys (p for trend = 0.017) and girls (p for trend = 0.014), but not in the non-abdominal obesity group of either sex. Conclusion: In the current study, SUA levels significantly increased in both boys and girls with obesity or abdominal obesity. Further studies of the effect of SUA on health outcomes in boys and girls with obesity or abdominal obesity are needed. What is Known: • High serum uric acid (SUA) is a risk factor for various metabolic diseases, including gout, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. What is New: • SUA levels increased in boys and the 10-12 years group of Korean children and adolescents. • SUA levels increased significantly in Korean children and adolescents with obesity or central obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health concern worldwide and has been recognized as a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The elevated level of uric acid (hyperuricemia) has been suggested to be associated with obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. However, there is limited information on the relationship between hyperuricemia and CKD. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the prevalence of CKD and assess its relationship with hyperuricemia in Bangladeshi adults. METHODS In this study, blood samples were collected from 545 participants (398 males and 147 females) aged ≥ 18 years. Biochemical parameters such as serum uric acid (SUA), lipid profile markers, glucose, creatinine and urea were measured by colorimetric methods. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and CKD were determined based on serum creatinine levels with existed formula. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between SUA and CKD. RESULTS The overall prevalence of CKD was 5.9% with 6.1% in males and 5.2% in females. Hyperuricemia was prevalent in 18.7% of participants with 23.2% in males and 14.6% in females. An increasing trend of CKD prevalence was observed with increasing age in the groups. The mean eGFR level was significantly lower in male (95.1 ± 31.8 ml/min/1.73m2) than in female (109.3 ± 77.4 ml/min/1.73m2) subjects (p < 0.01). The mean level of SUA was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in participants having CKD (7.1 ± 1.9 mg/dL) than in participants without CKD (5.7 ± 1.6 mg/dL). A decreasing trend for eGFR concentration and an increasing trend for CKD prevalence was observed across the SUA quartiles (p < 0.001). In regression analysis, a significant positive association was found between hyperuricemia and CKD. CONCLUSION This study showed an independent association between hyperuricemia and CKD in Bangladeshi adults. Further mechanistic studies are needed to explore the potential link between hyperuricemia and CKD.

Abstract
Objective The prevalence of hyperuricemia appears to be high worldwide. We aimed to explore the interaction between harmful alcohol use and tea consumption on hyperuricemia. Methods This study recruited 22,449 Han residents based on the data from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study, Chongqing province, to have a face-to-face electronic questionnaire, physical examination, and clinical laboratory tests. The difference in hyperuricemia between the different populations was compared by the Chi-square test. The interaction between harmful alcohol use and tea consumption was analyzed by the multivariate logistic regression model. Results Amongst 22,449 participants, the mean age was 51.5±11.8 years, and 46.83% of them were males. The proportion of harmful alcohol use, tea consumption, and harmful alcohol use and tea consumption were 14.01%, 21.01%, and 6.54%, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression showed that the odds ratio (OR) of harmful alcohol use and tea consumption (OR=2.21, 95% CI: 1.58-3.10) was greater than that of harmful alcohol use (OR=1.63, 95% CI:1.17-2.27) and tea consumption (OR=1.34, 95% CI:1.10-1.63). Among males, the results were similar (harmful alcohol use and tea consumption: OR=2.02, 95% CI: 1.43-2.84; harmful alcohol use: OR=1.61, 95% CI: 1.14-2.27; tea consumption: OR=1.28, 95% CI: 1.05-1.57). However, among females, the odds ratio of harmful alcohol use and tea consumption (OR=15.50, 95% CI: 1.36-176.50) was more than 10 times than that of only harmful alcohol use (OR=1.55, 95% CI: 0.42-5.69) or tea consumption (OR=1.22, 95% CI: 0.52-2.82). Conclusion The interaction of harmful alcohol use and tea consumption was a positive risk for hyperuricemia in Han residents aged 30-79 years in China.

Abstract
Hesperetin is a natural flavonoid with many biological activities. In view of hyperuricemia treatment, the effects of hesperetin in vivo and in vitro, and the underlying mechanisms, were explored. Hyperuricemia models induced by yeast extract (YE) or potassium oxonate (PO) in mice were created, as were models based on hypoxanthine and xanthine oxidase (XOD) in L-O2 cells and sodium urate in HEK293T cells. Serum level of uric acid (UA), creatinine (CRE), and urea nitrogen (BUN) were reduced significantly after hesperetin treatment in vivo. Hesperetin provided hepatoprotective effects and inhibited xanthine oxidase activity markedly, altered the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) and catalase (CAT), downregulated the XOD protein expression, toll-like receptor (TLR)4, nucleotide binding oligomerization domain-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, interleukin-18 (IL-18), upregulated forkhead box O3a (FOXO3a), manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) in a uric acid-synthesis model in mice. Protein expression of organic anion transporter 1 (OAT1), OAT3, organic cationic transporter 1 (OCT1), and OCT2 was upregulated by hesperetin intervention in a uric acid excretion model in mice. Our results proposal that hesperetin exerts a uric acid-lowering effect through inhibiting xanthine oxidase activity and protein expression, intervening in the TLR4-NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathway, and up-regulating expression of FOXO3a, MnSOD, OAT1, OAT3, OCT1, and OCT2 proteins. Thus, hesperetin could be a promising therapeutic agent against hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Xanthine oxidase (XO) is a metalloflavoenzyme associated with the uric acid formation in purine metabolism. Serum XO has been suggested to be associated with liver and kidney dysfunction, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. However, there is limited information on the relationship between serum XO levels and hypertension. This study aimed to assess the relationship between serum XO levels and hypertension in Bangladeshi adults. In this study, fasting blood samples were collected from 312 participants (225 males and 87 females), aged ≥ 20 years. Serum levels of XO were determined by ELISA and other biochemical parameters including serum uric acid (SUA) were measured by colorimetric methods. Hypertension was defined as SBP ≥ 140 mmHg and/or DBP ≥ 90 mmHg or self-reported recent use of anti-hypertensive medications. Association between serum XO levels and hypertension was evaluated by multinomial logistic regression analysis. The mean level of XO was significantly higher (p < 0.001) in females (5.8 ± 3.2 U/L) than in males (3.9 ± 2.5 U/L). When the participants were divided by blood pressure levels, the mean level of serum XO was significantly higher (p < 0.01) in the hypertensive group (5.0 ± 2.7 U/L) compared to the normotensive control group (4.0 ± 2.7 U/L). An increasing trend for SBP and DBP levels was observed across the XO quartiles (at least p < 0.01 for both cases). A significant positive correlation was found for XO with SBP and DBP (p < 0.01). In regression analysis, the serum levels of XO showed a significant and independent association with hypertension prevalence. In conclusion, the mean level of serum XO was significantly higher in hypertensive individuals and XO was independently associated with the prevalence of hypertension. Our results indicate that XO may have a potential role in the pathophysiology of elevated blood pressure through generating of reactive oxygen species. Further large-scale longitudinal studies are needed to determine the underlying mechanisms between XO and hypertension.

Abstract
Xanthine oxidase (XO) is an enzyme associated with purine metabolism. The relationship between XO levels and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is not clear yet or little is known so far. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study to determine the association of XO levels with T2D in a Bangladeshi adult cohort. A total of 325 participants (234 males and 91 females) were enrolled in the study. The participants were divided into three groups; diabetic (n = 173), prediabetic (n = 35), and non-diabetic control (n = 117). Serum levels of XO were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and other biochemical parameters including fasting blood glucose (FBG), serum uric acid (SUA), and lipid profile markers measured by colorimetric methods. Participants with T2D were confirmed according to the definition of the American Diabetic Association. The association between serum XO levels and T2D was determined by logistic regression models. The mean level of serum XO was significantly higher in females (6.0 ± 3.7 U/L) compared to male (4.0 ± 2.8 U/L) participants (p < 0.001). In contrast, males had a higher mean level of SUA (6.1 ± 1.9 mg/dL) than female (4.4 ± 1.9 mg/dL) participants (p < 0.001). The mean level of XO was significantly higher in the diabetic group (5.8 ± 3.6 U/L) compared to the prediabetic (3.7 ± 1.9 U/L) and control (2.9 ± 1.8 U/L) groups (p < 0.001). On the other hand, the mean SUA concentration was significantly lower in the diabetic group than in the other two groups (p < 0.001). A significant increasing trend was observed for FBG levels across the XO quartiles (p < 0.001). A decreasing trend was found for SUA levels in the XO quartiles (p < 0.001). Serum levels of XO and SUA showed a positive and negative correlation with FBG, respectively. In regression analysis, serum XO levels showed an independent association with T2D. In conclusion, this study reports a positive and independent association between XO levels and T2D in Bangladeshi adults. Monitoring serum levels of XO may be useful in reducing the risk of T2D. Further research is needed to determine the underlying mechanisms of the association between elevated XO levels and T2D.

Abstract
This study revealed that serum uric acid (sUA) levels were not associated with bone mineral density (BMD) at different skeletal sites in middle-aged and elderly men, even adjusting for confounding variables. Nevertheless, a positive association was only found between sUA levels and BMD at all skeletal sites in the normal BMI group. INTRODUCTION Previous studies have reported an association between serum uric acid (sUA) levels and bone mineral density (BMD). However, their findings are controversial and limited to adult men in the general population. This study was aimed at examining the association between sUA levels and BMD at multiple skeletal sites in middle-aged and elderly men. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis of BMD at different skeletal sites and sUA levels was conducted on 918 men (age: 50.83 ± 7.95) using data from the Ditmanson Research Database. The participants were categorized into four groups based on quartiles of the sUA level, and BMD were assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Multivariate linear regression models were utilized to investigate the association between sUA levels and BMD. Further, subgroup analyses were performed. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, sUA as a continuous variable was significantly associated with BMD at the femoral neck only (β, 95% confidence interval: 0.007 [0.001-0.013]). However, in the categorical analysis, no significant differences were detected in terms of BMD at different skeletal sites across the different sUA quartile groups. Moreover, if the body mass index (BMI) was < 24 kg/m2 for each unit increase in sUA level, the spine, femoral neck, and total hip BMD increased by 0.014, 0.013, and 0.015 g/cm2, respectively. CONCLUSION The sUA level was not associated with BMD at different skeletal sites in middle-aged and elderly men. Nevertheless, a positive association was only found between sUA levels and BMD at all skeletal sites in the normal weight group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperuricemia has an increasing incidence in various regions year by year, in this study, we evaluated the prevalence of hyperuricemia in a routine physical examination in Nanning, Guangxi Province, and analyzed the influencing factors of hyperuricemia, aiming to provide evidence for the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia and related diseases. METHODS Data were collected from 1957 patients who underwent physical examinations at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University in China since 2017. Questionnaires were structured, including subjects' demographics, lifestyle, personal history, chronic disease history, medication history, etc. UA (uricase method), TC (cholesterol oxidase method), TG (glycerol phosphate oxidase method), HDL-C (direct method), LDL-C (direct method), BUN (rate method), creatinine (sarine oxidase method), and GLU (oxidase-peroxidase method) were detected. Independent risk factors for hyperuricemia were determined by bivariate non-conditional logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The overall prevalence of hyperuricemia was 16.6% (19.5% in males and 14.9% in females). Gender, waist circumference, BMI, the proportion of drinking, hypertension, high education, serum concentrations of TC, TG, LDL-C, BUN, and creatinine were significantly higher and the serum concentration of HDL-C was significantly lower in patients with and without hyperuricemia (all p < 0.05). Waist circumference, BMI, BUN, and creatinine were independent risk factors for hyperuricemia. CONCLUSION The prevalence of hyperuricemia is very high in Guangxi. Public health lectures should be conducted to encourage people to establish a healthy lifestyle and strengthen early intervention for hyperuricemia to reduce the risk of cardio-cerebrovascular and other related diseases.

Abstract
Clinical investigation of obesity-related risk factors aids in the early detection, prevention, and management of obesity. We aimed to examine the association between obesity and serum uric acid (sUA). A cross-sectional study was conducted including 18473 subjects from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The exposure and outcome variables were sUA and body mass index (BMI), respectively. The weighted multivariate linear regression models and smooth curve fittings were conducted to assess the association between sUA and BMI. There were significantly positive correlations between sUA and BMI in both males and females (β = 1.414, 95% CI: 1.323-1.505, P < .0001, β = 1.853, 95% CI: 1.740-1.966, P < .0001, respectively). Furthermore, individuals in the higher sUA quartiles had higher BMI than those in the lowest quartile in both males and females. Subgroup analyses were stratified by race/ethnicity, results indicated the positive association of sUA with BMI in males remained in all races including Mexican American (β = 1.203, 95% CI: 0.965-1.442, P < .0001), other Hispanic (β = 1.126, 95% CI: 0.858-1.395, P < .0001), non-Hispanic White (β = 1.493, 95% CI: 1.343-1.642, P < .0001), non-Hispanic Black (β = 1.331, 95% CI: 1.122-1.540, P < .0001), and other races (β = 1.329, 95% CI: 1.115-1.544, P < .0001). And the positive association of sUA with BMI in females also remained in all races including Mexican American (β = 1.806, 95% CI: 1.520-2.092, P < .0001), other Hispanic (β = 2.033, 95% CI: 1.687-2.379, P < .0001), non-Hispanic White (β = 1.847, 95% CI: 1.657-2.037, P < .0001), non-Hispanic Black (β = 2.141, 95% CI: 1.874-2.408, P < .0001), and other races (β = 1.348, 95% CI: 1.081-1.615, P < .0001). The current cross-sectional study with 18473 US participants found that an elevated sUA was positively correlated with a higher BMI in males, females, and all kinds of races.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia animal models have long been used for evaluating food-derived anti-hyperuricemia compounds. Fructose and potassium oxonate are commonly used for developing hyperuricemia mouse model. Recent research also developed spontaneous hyperuricemia model by uricase knockout (Uox-/-). In this work, we evaluated 3 kinds of models with the same gene background to illustrate the differences between the treatments. Unlike the uric acid levels in potassium oxonate (224.79 ± 33.62 μmol/L) and Uox-/- groups (458.39 ± 38.29 μmol/L), fructose treatment did not lead to higher serum uric acid level (174.93 ± 30.46 μmol/L) comparing to the control group (153.53 ± 40.96 μmol/L). However, abnormal glycometabolism only developed in the fructose and the Uox-/- group. In addition, anemia, inflammasome and severe renal injury occurred in the Uox-/- group. The Uox-/- mice were then treated with puerarin and allopurinol, and found that puerarin could reduce serum uric acid and alleviated the serious renal damage associated with high uric acid. Thus, the Uox-/- mice could be a suitable model for screening and evaluating anti-hyperuricemia compounds.

Abstract
Background Obesity and hypertension are global health concerns. Both are linked with increased risks of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Several early studies reported the prevalence of obesity and hypertension in Bangladeshi adults, but the associated factors in this country population are not clear yet. We aimed to estimate the prevalence and related risk factors of general and abdominal obesity and hypertension in rural and urban adults in Bangladesh. Methods In this cross-sectional study, data (n = 1410) was collected on rural (n = 626) and urban (n = 784) adults from eight divisional regions of Bangladesh. Both anthropometric and socio-demographic measurements were recorded in a standardized questionnaire form. General and abdominal obesity were defined based on WHO proposed cut-off values and hypertension was defined by SBP ≥ 140 mmHg and/or, DBP ≥ 90 mmHg and/or, intake of anti-hypertensive drugs at the time of data collection. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the relationship of general and abdominal obesity and hypertension with various factors. Results The overall prevalence of general obesity, abdominal obesity and hypertension was 18.2, 41.9 and 30.9%, respectively. The women had a higher prevalence of general obesity (25.2%), abdominal obesity (56.1%) and hypertension (32.3%) compared to the men (12.2, 29.0, and 29.7%, respectively). The prevalence of both general and abdominal obesity was higher in urban participants (21.7 and 46.6%, respectively) than in the rural participants (13.8 and 35.1%, respectively), whereas, the rural participants had a higher prevalence of hypertension (35.1%) compared to the urban participants (27.5%). In geographical region comparison, the prevalence of general and abdominal obesity and hypertension were higher in participants enrolled from Dhaka (30.8%), Khulna (63.6%) and Mymensingh (43.5%) regions, respectively compared to other regions. In regression analysis, increased age, place of residence and less physical activity were positively associated with the increased risk of both types of obesity and hypertension. The analysis also showed a significant positive association between high BMI and an increased risk of hypertension. Conclusion This study shows a high prevalence of obesity and hypertension in rural and urban adults. Increased age, inadequate physical activity and place of residence were significant determinants of general and abdominal obesity and hypertension. A comprehensive intervention program focusing on modifiable risk factors such as lifestyles and food habits is needed to increase awareness and prevent the burden of obesity and hypertension in the Bangladeshi population.

Abstract
Objective Undoubtedly, the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and obesity is less data for Chinese patients with obesity. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA) and the association between SUA and patients with obesity. Methods All participants were categorized as overweight, obesity I, obesity II, and obesity III. In addition, based on SUA concentration, the participants were stratified into four quartiles. The authors used descriptive analysis, independent t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression models to verify the SUA level and obesity among Chinese adults. Results Overall, the estimated prevalence of HUA was 69.8%. In the BMI categories, the prevalence of HUA was 5.1% in overweight, 15.2% in obesity I, 16.9% in obesity II, and 32.5% in obesity III. Correlation analysis shows that SUA is strongly correlated with BMI, waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference (HC). Multiple linear regression analysis shows that high density-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is a protective predictor of serum uric acid levels in patients with obesity. Compared with the overweight, obesity I, obesity II, and obesity III were more likely to have higher levels in the SUA levels. Conclusion We mainly showed that the serum uric acid levels in Chinese patients with severe obesity declined slightly as age increased.

Abstract
Hypertension is a major cause of cardiovascular disease and related mortality worldwide. The presence of general and abdominal obesity in hypertensive individuals increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality. However, evidence on the burden of obesity and hypertension and associated factors are lacking or limited among young adult students in Bangladesh. This study measured the prevalence and factors associated with general and abdominal obesity and hypertension among university students in Bangladesh. In this study, a total of 1011 students (647 males and 364 females) were enrolled on nine public universities in eight divisional regions of Bangladesh. Data were collected on socio‐demographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle in a questionnaire form. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association of general obesity, abdominal obesity and hypertension with different factors. The prevalence of general obesity, abdominal obesity and hypertension was 8.3%, 20.7%, and 10.2%, respectively. The females had a higher prevalence of general obesity (8.8%) and abdominal obesity (26.3%) compared to the males (8.0% and 17.7%, respectively). However, a higher prevalence of hypertension was observed in males (12.2%) than in the female (6.1%) patients. In regression analysis, age showed a significant association with general obesity, whereas, age and female sex were significantly associated with abdominal obesity. The analysis also identified the male sex and high BMI as the increased risk factors for hypertension. Our study suggests a comprehensive screening program and campaigns to increase awareness about obesity and hypertension and its risk factors among young adults in Bangladesh.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is an important risk factor for hyperuricemia. We aimed to explore the relationship between perirenal fat thickness (PrFT) and paranephric fat thickness (PnFT) and serum uric acid (SUA) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS This was a cross-sectional study involving 257 patients with T2DM recruited from Beijing Luhe Hospital from September 2019 to May 2020. The basic and clinical information such as age, gender, duration of diabetes was collected through the medical records. All patients underwent a physical examination including height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, systolic blood pressures and diastolic blood pressure. The venous blood and urine samples were collected to measure SUA, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and glycosylated hemoglobin. PrFT and PnFT were measured via ultrasonography. Pearson correlation test and linear regression analysis were used to analyze the association between PrFT and PnFT and SUA. RESULTS We found that PrFT and PnFT increased according to the tertiles of SUA level (P = 0.001 and P = 0.009, respectively). In addition, the PrFT and PnFT were positively associated with SUA level (r = 0.25, P < 0.001, r = 0.23, P < 0.001, respectively). Moreover, this association was stronger in males, non-obesity patients and patients with normal renal function. In the multivariate analysis, the PrFT was independently associated with SUA level after adjusting confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS The PrFT was independently associated with SUA level in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the continuous improvement of people's living standards, the incidence of hyperuricemia (HUA) is increasing globally. The prevalence of HUA ranged in terms of region, race, and age. This study aims to investigate the changes in the prevalence of HUA in clients of health examination in Eastern China between 2009 and 2019. METHODS Chinese men and women aged 20-79 years (n = 4847 in the 2009 group and n = 12,188 in 2019 group) who had received health examinations were enrolled. Serum uric acid (UA) levels and biochemical parameters, including fasting blood-glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (CHOL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), creatinine (Cr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) were evaluated. The prevalence of HUA in different age groups were measured, and the correlation of biochemical parameters with HUA were analyzed. RESULTS The prevalence of HUA was 18.7% in the 2019 group, which was significantly higher than that in 2009 (11.1%). In females, the prevalence of HUA was significantly higher in 2019 than 2009 for age groups of 20-29 and 30-39 years. In male population, 2019 participants had significantly higher age-specific prevalence for all age groups than 2009 participants. Young men aged 20-29 years became the main population of HUA in the 2019 participants, whereas middle-aged men aged 40-49 years had the highest prevalence of HUA in the 2009 participants. The prevalence rates of HUA in all BMI groups in 2019 participants were significantly higher than those in 2009 participants. Spearmen's correlation analysis and Logistic regression analysis indicated that BMI was positively correlated with HUA. The receiver-operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis showed BMI > 24.48 kg/m2 and BMI > 23.84 kg/m2 displayed good capacities to discriminate the population with HUA from those without HUA in 2009 and 2019 participants, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In recent 10 years, the prevalence of HUA was increased rapidly in Chinese adults, especially in males. In 2019, the young male group (20-29 years old) replaced the middle-aged male group (40-49 years old) in 2009 as the leading age group for male HUA. BMI was positively correlated with HUA, and might be a potential risk factors to predict HUA.

Abstract
Background and Objetives
Hyperuricemia (HUA) and gout seriously influence patients’ quality of life. The current study was performed to investigate the prevalence of HUA and gout and the related risk factors in Chinese adults.
Methods
Data were collected from the National Survey of Thyroid Disorders and Diabetes (the Thyroid Disease, Iodine Status, and Diabetes National Epidemiological survey [TIDE]), a cross-sectional investigation conducted during 2015–2017. Using a random, multistage, and stratified sampling strategy, a representative sample (78,130 participants aged 18 years and above) was selected from the general population in 31 provinces of mainland China. The weighted prevalence rates of HUA and gout were calculated, and the related risk factors were analyzed.
Results
The weighted prevalence rates of HUA and gout in Chinese adults were 17.7% and 3.2%, respectively. The prevalence of HUA in males linearly decreased with age, while the prevalence in females showed the opposite trend (both P for trend < 0.01). The prevalence rate of gout exhibited a rising tendency with age in both genders (both P for trend < 0.05). The HUA and gout prevalence rates in males were the highest in Han and Tibetan nationalities, respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that the morbidities of HUA and gout were differentially associated with age, residence location, nationality, smoking, and other complicating metabolic diseases in the two genders.
Conclusions
There are relatively high prevalence rates of gout and HUA in China, which is currently a developing country. Reducing their burden has become an urgent issue for Chinese people.

Abstract
Background There is a limited number of studies on the dose-response relationship between serum uric acid and impaired glucose metabolism in people without diabetes, and no large-scale research exploring the relationship in women without diabetes is based on menopausal status. Consequently, the present study aimed to investigate the above relationship in United States adults without diabetes. Materials and Methods Data from 2,498 men and 2,650 women aged ≥20 years were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2016 conducted in the United States. Binary logistic regression analysis was applied to evaluate the association between uric acid and impaired glucose metabolism. Restricted cubic spline analysis, sensitivity analysis, and stratified analysis by menopausal status were performed to explore the above relationships. Results A positive correlation was found between uric acid and the risk of insulin resistance in all participants (P < 0.05). In binary logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for confounding factors, compared with the lowest quartile of uric acid, the odds ratio (95% confidence intervals) of insulin resistance in the highest quartile was 1.9 (1.1-3.1) and 2.2 (1.2-4.3) in men and women, respectively. A significant positive relationship was also observed between uric acid and impaired fasting glucose and hyperinsulinemia in women, while in men, uric acid was positively associated with the risk of hyperinsulinemia but not impaired fasting glucose. Restricted cubic spline showed that the odds ratios of insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia increased with elevating uric acid levels in both men and women. When stratified by menopause, the association remained significant in pre-menopausal women aged ≥20, but insignificant in post-menopausal women. Conclusion Uric acid was positively associated with the risk of impaired glucose metabolism in a cohort of United States adults, and uric acid increased the risk of insulin resistance in pre-menopausal, but not in post-menopausal women.

Early-life exposure to the Chinese famine and risk of hyperuricaemia in adult females in Qingdao. Br J Nutr 2022; 127:1639-1646. Abstract
Two population-based cross-sectional surveys involving randomly selected Chinese adults aged 35-74 years were conducted in Qingdao, China in 2006 and 2009. Nine thousand fifty-five subjects from the two surveys were grouped into four birth groups of fetal/infant exposed (born between 1 January 1959 and 31 December 1962), childhood exposed (born between 1 January 1950 and 31 December 1958), adolescence exposed (born between 1 January 1942 and 31 December 1949) and the unexposed (born before 1941 and after 1963). Multivariate logistic regression models were used to calculate the OR and 95 % CI of hyperuricaemia in different exposed groups. Overall, famine exposure in the fetal/infant period, childhood and adolescence was not associated with adulthood hyperuricaemia (all P > 0·05). In females, childhood exposed group (OR = 1·59, 95 % CI 1·25, 2·02) and adolescence exposed group (OR = 1·74, 95 % CI 1·30, 2·33) both had higher risks to have hyperuricaemia in adult. However, this difference was not found in fetal/infant exposed group. In males, no significant relation was observed in any famine exposed group (all P > 0·05). Exposure to famine in childhood and adolescence is associated with an increased risk of hyperuricaemia for adulthood of females, but not in males. Adequate nutrition during early life appears to be beneficial to prevent hyperuricaemia of adult females.

Abstract
Background High levels of serum uric acid (SUA) are associated with a poor survival rate of breast cancer. Meanwhile, a sharp increase in SUA after chemotherapy may lead to tumor lysis syndrome (TLS). We created and validated a nomogram to help doctors better manage the patient's SUA level ahead of time in this study. Methods From July 2012 to June 2021, 206 patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy participated in the study. They are randomly divided into training set (n=137) and validation set (n=69). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to screen the independent predictors of the risk of elevated uric acid in the whole training set data. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and decision curve assessed the accuracy and clinical application value of nomogram. Results We confirmed that body mass index (BMI), age, menopause, EC-T chemotherapy (epirubicin-cyclophosphamide followed by paclitaxel) and THP + C-T (pirarubicin-cyclophosphamide followed by paclitaxel) are independent risk factors for high SUA. We established a nomogram for high SUA risk prediction to help clinicians make individualized choice of chemotherapy regimen. In the training cohort, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) showed statistical accuracy (AUC =0.796). Decision curve analysis proved the clinical value of the nomogram. Conclusions This nomogram can be used to calculate the specific likelihood of high SUA in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy with different chemotherapy options.

Abstract
Background Several studies have associated uric acid with dyslipidemia. However, no previous studies have examined patients without chronic illness. Aim : The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between serum uric acid concentration and lipid profile parameters and to estimate the prevalence of hyperuricemia in the city of Jeddah. Patients and Methods A retrospective study was conducted on 1206 patients who undergone laboratory blood testing over a 3-year period (2018-2020) at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, which was ethically approved. We used a predesigned checklist to collect data from electronic hospital records using Google Forms. Bivariate analysis, tables, and graphs were used to represent and identify the relationships between variables. A P value of <0.05 was considered significant. Results Our study revealed a prevalence of 12% for hyperuricemia in the study population. Males were more frequently affected than females (8.13% vs. 3.73%, respectively). There was no association between serum uric acid concentration and lipid profile parameters, including total cholesterol (P = 0.92), triglyceride (P = 0.42), high-density lipoprotein (P = 0.47), and low-density lipoprotein (P = 0.66). There was a strong association between serum uric acid concentration and high body mass index (P < 0.001), older age (P = 0.002), male sex (P < 0.001), and nationality (P < 0.001). Furthermore, there was an association between sex and mean erythrocyte sedimentation rate (P = 0.02) and mean triglyceride concentration (P = 0.02). Conclusion We observed a low prevalence of hyperuricemia, and our results indicate no association between serum uric acid concentration and lipid profile parameters.

Abstract
Background: Conflicting findings of the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and atrial fibrillation (AF) have been reported in both men and women. The sex-specific associations between SUA and the risk of AF are unclear, although hyperuricemia is independently associated with the risk of AF. We performed this meta-analysis to assess the sex-specific effect of SUA on the risk of AF. Methods The PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases were searched up to October 3, 2021, for studies that reported sex-specific associations of SUA levels with AF. Linear relationships were assessed by the generalized least squares trend estimation. This study was registered with PROSPERO (42020193013). Results Ten eligible studies with 814,804 participants (415,779 men and 399,025 women) were identified. In the category analysis, high SUA was associated with an increased risk of AF in both men (OR: 1.42; 95% CI, 1.18–1.71, I2 = 34%) and women (OR: 2.02; 95% CI, 1.29–3.16, I2 = 70%). In the dose-response analysis, for each 60 μmol/L (1 mg/dL) increase in the SUA level, the risk of AF increased by 15% (OR: 1.15; 95% CI, 1.07–1.25, I2 = 74%) in men and 35% (OR: 1.35; 95% CI, 1.18–1.53, I2 = 73%) in women. There was a borderline difference in the impact of SUA on the risk of AF between men and women (P for interaction = 0.05). A significant linear relationship between SUA and the risk of AF was observed in men (P for non-linearity = 0.91) and women (P for non-linearity = 0.92). Conclusions This study suggested that there was a significant linear relationship between SUA and the risk of AF among men and women, with a higher risk estimate for women. Abstract
Objective Although elevated uric acid is associated with obesity and considered a predictor of hypertension, the causal linkage between the three metabolic conditions is not very clear. We aim to examine whether elevated uric acid mediates the effects of obesity on hypertension development. Methods A total of 1984 participants (mean aged 53 years, 62.10% female) with repeated measurements of obesity, blood pressure, and uric acid 4 years apart in the Gusu cohort were included. We first applied cross-lagged panel analysis and bidirectional association analysis to delineate the temporal association between obesity and hyperuricemia. Then, a causal mediation model was constructed to further examine the causal role of hyperuricemia in the linkage between obesity and hypertension. Age, sex, education, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, fasting blood glucose, and lipids were adjusted. Results The cross-lagged panel analysis demonstrated that the relationship from baseline obesity to follow-up hyperuricemia was stronger than that from baseline hyperuricemia to follow-up obesity (β: 0.09 vs 0.06, P<0.01 for BMI, β: 0.13 vs 0.07, P<0.01 for WC). Bidirectional association analysis found that baseline obesity predicted the risk of incident hyperuricemia (OR = 1.09, P<0.01 for BMI, OR = 1.05, P<0.01 for WC), but the other directional association was not statistically significant (all P>0.05). The causal mediation analysis found that hyperuricemia partially mediated the association of baseline BMI (mediate proportion: 3.09%, 95% CI: 0.97%~6.00% for SBP, 3.74%, 95% CI: 1.55%~7.00% for DBP) and baseline WC (mediate proportion: 5.56%, 95% CI: 2.01%~11.00% for SBP, 5.81%, 95% CI: 2.59%~10.00% for DBP) with follow-up blood pressures. Conclusion Obesity preceded hyperuricemia and the latter partially mediated the relationship between obesity and hypertension, independent of behavioral and other metabolic factors.
