Abstract
Introduction Previous literature has demonstrated that engagement in serious leisure (SL) is associated with subjective well-being among older adults, while the relationship between successful aging (SA) and SL remains unexplored. This study aims to investigated the association between SL, social support (SS), flow experience (FE), and SA. Methods A total of 435 older adults participating in air volleyball events were included in this study. Results The findings revealed that: (i) SL directly and positively influences on SS, FE, and SA; (ii) SS is positively related to FE, and FE is positively associated with older adults'SA; (iii) Both SS and FE fully mediate the relationship between SL and SA, with SS partially explaining this mediation through FE. Discussion This study builds upon prior research in this field and highlights the significance of SL for the SA among older adults. Future studies should further explore the underlying mechanisms linking serious sport experiences to successful elderly life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Reducing health inequalities among older adults is crucial to ensuring healthy aging is within reach for all. The current study provides a timely update on demographic- and geographic-related inequalities in healthy aging among older adults residing in Canadian communities. METHODS Data was extracted from the Canadian Health Survey on Seniors [2019-2020] for ~6 million adults aged 65 years and older residing in 10 provinces of Canada. Healthy aging was defined by two indices: 1] health-related quality of life and 2] functional health. Poisson regression models and spatial mapping were used to demonstrate inequalities among age, race, and sex categories, and health regions. RESULTS Approximately 90.3% of individuals reported less than perfect quality of life and 18.8% reported less than perfect functional health. The prevalence of less than perfect quality of life was higher for females [PR 1.14, 95% CI;1.02-1.29] and for older adults aged ≥80 years as compared to males and older adults aged ≤79 years [PR 1.66, 95% CI;1.49-1.85]. Similarly, the prevalence of less than perfect functional health was higher for females [PR 1.58, 95% CI;1.32-1.89] and for older adults aged ≥80 years [PR 2.71, 95% CI;2.59-2.84]. Spatial mapping showed that regions of lower quality of life were concentrated in the Prairies and Western Ontario, whereas regions of higher quality of life were concentrated in Quebec. CONCLUSIONS Amongst older individuals residing in Canadian communities, less than perfect quality of life and functional health is unequally distributed among females, older adults aged ≥80 years, and those residing in the Prairie regions specifically. Newer policy should focus on interventions targeted at these subpopulations to ensure that healthy aging in within reach for all Canadians.

Abstract
The escalating elderly population worldwide has prompted a surge of interest in longevity medicine. Its goal is to interfere with the speed of ageing by slowing it down or even reversing its accompanying effects. As a field, it is rapidly growing and spreading into different branches. One of these is the use of nutraceuticals as anti-ageing drugs. This field is gaining massive popularity nowadays, as people are shifting towards a more natural approach to life and seeking to use natural products as a source of medicine. The present article focuses on the cellular effect of Haberlea rhodopensis Friv. in vitro culture total ethanol extract (HRT), produced by a sustainable biotechnological approach. The extract showed a similar phytochemical profile to plant leaf extract and was rich in primary bioactive ingredients-caffeoyl phenylethanoid glycosides, myconoside, and paucifloside. This study examined the biosafety potential, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, and mitochondrial activity of the extract using in vitro cultures. The results showed high cell survival rates and minimal cytotoxic effects on Lep3 cells, with no induction of reactive oxygen species nor genotoxicity. Additionally, the extract positively influenced mitochondrial activity, indicating potential benefits for cellular health. The results are promising and show the beneficial effect of HRT without the observation of any adverse effects, which sets the foundation for its further testing and potential therapeutic applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine different trajectories of cognitive changes in elderly adults and explore the mediating role of depressive symptoms. DESIGN A 7-year, community-based, prospective cohort study. SETTING The downtown neighborhood of Shanghai, China. PARTICIPANTS A cohort of 394 older adults, with an average age of 71.8 years, was recruited in 2015 and has been reassessed every two years until 2021. METHODS Latent Class Growth Analysis was used to model aging trajectories and Linear Mixed-Effect Models for Repeated Measures were used to estimate the least squares mean changes of cognition between subjects with depression (DEP+) and without (DEP-) across all visits. RESULTS Three cognitive trajectories were identified: the "successful aging" (SA) trajectory had the best and most consistent performance (n=229, 55.9%); the "normal aging" (NA) trajectory showed lower but stable cognition (n=141, 37.3%); while the "cognitive decline" (CD) trajectory displayed poor and declining cognition (n=24, 6.8%). Depressive symptoms were found to be influential across all trajectories. In the CD trajectory, the MoCA scores of the DEP+ group increased in within-group comparisons and were significantly higher than those of the DEP- group at visits 1 and 3 in between-group comparisons. A similar trend was observed in the NA trajectory, though it did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS Our research suggests that mild and decreasing depressive symptoms can be a reversible factor that might slow down the irreversible cognitive decline in the elderly. Therefore, we suggest that even mild depressive symptoms in the elderly should be monitored and detected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Though we all age, some age more successfully than others. Health and social connections have been identified as cornerstones to successful aging, yet the contributions from psychological factors are less clear. Our goal was to examine the influence of grit and growth mindset in successful aging in middle and older age. We also assessed whether grit or growth mindset mediated the lifestyle-successful aging relationship. METHOD We used a telephone questionnaire to measure grit and growth mindset, successful aging, and lifestyle for 263 adults, ages 40-80 years. RESULTS Higher grit-effort and growth mindset predicted more successful aging in younger (40-64 years) and older groups (65-80 years). Additionally, exercise frequency predicted successful aging for the combined sample and partially mediated the relationship between growth mindset and successful aging. CONCLUSIONS Our findings reveal grit-effort and a growth mindset as important contributors to successful aging in middle and older adulthood. Because psychological constructs are malleable, continued study of grit and growth mindsets is essential to enable their eventual application in changing the aging process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interventions to encourage adequate physical activity amongst older adults have had limited long-term success. Dancing and exergames, two beneficial and enjoyable physical activities for older adults, may make regular exercise more interesting and effective. Dance exergames are physical exercises that integrate sensory, cognitive, psychological, and physical functions by requiring users to interact with game scenarios through deliberate body motions and receive real-time feedback. They provide an inherently enjoyable gaming and workout experience, which may boost exercise adherence. However, little is known about older adults' experiences with dance exergames. OBJECTIVE To synthesise the qualitative experiences of older adults participating in dance exergames. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-synthesis. METHODS Dance exergame studies (peer-reviewed and grey literature) involving older adults in any setting published in English from inception to 17 August 2023 were included. Qualitative or mixed-method studies must use immersive or non-immersive virtual-reality platforms. PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, The Cochrane Library, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, Google Scholar, and reference lists of relevant studies and reviews were searched for eligible studies. The search strategy for Scopus was: (TITLE-ABS-KEY (danc*) AND TITLE-ABS-KEY (exergames OR exergame OR video AND games OR virtual AND reality) AND TITLE-ABS-KEY (older AND adults OR elderly OR seniors OR geriatrics)). Thematic synthesis by Thomas and Harden was used for meta-synthesis. RESULTS Eleven studies (n = 200 older adults) were included. Three themes and 14 subthemes were synthesised: 1) Dance exergames as dual-task training for physical, cognitive, and psychological well-being, 2) Concerns on usability issues, and 3) Possible enhancements of dance exergames. Older adults recognised that dance exergames could improve their physical, cognitive, and psychological well-being. Existing dance exergame systems had several usability issues. For example, some older adults were unfamiliar with using new technology and had trouble in navigating the game systems. The older adults also provided various suggestions for adaptation to their age group, such as ensuring a variety of dances, difficulty levels suited for older adults' cultural backgrounds, and physical and cognitive capabilities. CONCLUSIONS Dance exergames may be an attractive way to encourage older adults to exercise, but appropriate modifications are needed. When designing/selecting dance exergames for older persons, researchers, healthcare professionals, and senior care centres should consider using exergames that have simple designs, varied dances that are locally adapted, and appeal to a large proportion of older adults. Abstract
Background and Objectives Previous research demonstrates that social support facilitates successful aging across all cultures. However, the factors that potentially mediate the link between social support and successful aging remain unclear. This study examined whether a healthy lifestyle and self-esteem mediate the association between social support and successful aging. It was hypothesized that the relationship between social support (family, friends, and significant other) and successful aging would be serially mediated by both healthy lifestyle and self-esteem. Research Design and Methods Participants were 479 Nigerian retirees (53.4% female) aged 60 to 90 years (Mage = 64.81, SD = 6.86). They provided information on relevant demographic variables and completed the following measures: Fantastic Lifestyle Checklist (Fitness Appraisal), Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support Scale, and Successful Aging Inventory. Three separate regression models (family, friends, and significant other dimensions of social support) were conducted using the Hayes PROCESS macro for SPSS with 5,000 bootstrap estimates. Results Controlling for age and sex, family support, significant other support, friends support, healthy lifestyle, and self-esteem were directly associated with successful aging. The association between family support and successful aging was mediated by healthy lifestyle; and this was also seen for friends' support and significant other support. The sequential path from social support to successful aging through healthy lifestyle, and then via improved self-esteem, was significant for family support and significant other support, but not friends support. Discussion and Implications Findings suggest that middle-aged to older adults who have strong support from their families and significant others may be more likely to engage in healthy behaviors and, in turn, experience higher levels of self-esteem, thereby aging well.

Abstract
Background Aging affects physical, mental, and social functions, which can lead to an increase in frailty. Old adults with frailty syndrome are prone to disabilities and hospitalization. Lifestyle is a context-based factor that has the potential to prevent frailty. Objectives This study aimed to assess the relationship between lifestyle and frailty among Iranian community-dwelling older adults. Design Setting This is a descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study. The participants were 513 older adults over 60 years by the convenience sampling method from the retirement center. Measurements Data were collected using Tilberg's frailty index, the Iranian elderly lifestyle questionnaire, and the Mini-Cog test. Data were analyzed with SPSS v.26 software by chi-square and logistic regression tests. Results The age of the participants was 66.43 ± 4.69 years. The male-to-female sex ratio was 1.5 (39.2% women). The lifestyle of 96 (19.3%) old adults was unfavorable. 18.7 percent of older adults had Frailty syndrome. The logistic regression test showed that moderate and favorable lifestyle (OR= 0.06; 95% CI: 0.02-0.16), age over 75 years (OR= 5.25; 95% CI: 2.35-11.69), retired employment status (OR= 0.13; 95% CI: 0.29-0.05) are factors that have a significant relationship with frailty (P< 0.05). Conclusion The findings showed that lifestyle can predict frailty. Therefore, it seems that an optimal lifestyle can prevent the frailty of older adults.

Abstract
Objectives Exploring the possibility of healthy aging among older persons is crucial for achieving optimal health in the growing older population. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, pattern, and determinants of healthy aging among older persons in Terengganu, Malaysia. Methods We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study involving older persons aged % 60 years. An interviewer-guided questionnaire, anthropometric measurements, and physical assessments were administered to operationalize healthy aging based on a multidimensional concept. Results Among the 765 older persons surveyed, only 14.1% (95% CI: 11.64?"16.59) were classified as healthy agers. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that superior intrinsic religiosity (odds ratio (OR) = 3.42; 95% CI: 1.34?"8.73), higher social interaction (OR = 2.82; 95% CI: 1.32?"6.04), larger calf circumference (OR = 2.05; 95% CI: 1.24?"3.38), taking water intake % 5 cups per day (OR = 2.01; 95% CI: 1.23?"3.30), better gait speed (OR = 1.71; 95% CI: 1.04?"2.80), having savings (OR = 1.71; 95% CI: 1.10?"2.66), and normal waist circumference (OR = 1.63; 95% CI: 1.04?"2.55) were found positively associated with healthy aging. Conclusions Only one in 10 older persons in the state met all the criteria for healthy aging. Specific aspects of religious status, social interaction, socioeconomic, behavioral, physical, and nutritional factors were found to predict healthy ageing in this population. These important determinants should be considered in developing a well-defined and comprehensive public health policy to promote healthy aging in the nation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although the association between adverse childhood conditions and health in later life has been relatively well established, little is known about how and through which mechanism this association develops. Building on the developmental adaptation model (Martin & Martin, 2002), the present study investigates the effects of distal and proximal influences on successful aging (SA). METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted of 475 adults aged 50 and above (Mean age = 72.13, SD = 10.46). SA was measured based on Rowe and Kahn's successful aging criteria model (1997) and an SA operationalization based on a number of multidimensional biopsychosocial indicators, including no disease and disability, active engagement with life, high physical and cognitive functioning, psychological well-being, life satisfaction and a one-item subjective SA question. RESULTS Parental death had no direct effect on SA (β = .03, p = .629), whereas education had (β = .39, p < .001). Furthermore, perceived income level and social conditions were identified as two sequential mediators between both education and SA; and parental death and SA. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that both early life and current factors contribute to explaining SA in a variety of ways.

Abstract
A high level of resilience is positively related to successful aging. However, interventions to increase resilience in older adults are not yet available. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of community participation in the relationship between resilience and successful aging. Data from 284 individuals aged 60 years and above were analyzed in this cross-sectional study. The pathways among resilience, community participation, and successful aging were statistically significant after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, depression, disability, and chronic disease. The analysis revealed a partial mediating effect of community participation (unstandardized estimate = .01, p < .01), explaining 16.4% of the total effect of resilience on successful aging. Promoting community participation may be beneficial for enhancing successful aging in community-dwelling older adults. Further studies to examine the causal relationship between community participation and successful aging and to develop community services are recommended to use community resources as means to support successful aging.

Abstract
We identified risk categories of not having a good later life among young older people and reported the consequences that being in these groups have on mental health and wellbeing. 3,511 participants aged 50 to 69 from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) provided data on 10 domains of a good later life. The domains were then entered into a model to identify risk groups using Latent Class Analysis. Regression models were used to assess the association between identified risk groups and depression, life satisfaction, loneliness and wellbeing. We found that 20% of individuals were in the "high" risk group for not having a good later life. These people were more likely to report depression, loneliness, lower life satisfaction and lower wellbeing than those in the low risk group. Being at risk of not having a good later life has important consequences for mental health and wellbeing. Appropriate support and services should be in place to ensure that everyone is able to live longer in good mental health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In the study, it was aimed to evaluate the relationship between health literacy and successful aging in elderly individuals with type 2 diabetes. METHODS This descriptive study was conducted with the participation of 415 elderly patients with type 2 diabetes who presented to the diabetics outpatient clinic between April-September 2021. The study data were collected through Identifying Information Form, Health Literacy Scale, and Successful Aging Scale. In the analysis of the data, descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, One-Way ANOVA, and student's t test were used. RESULTS Health Literacy Scale total mean score of the elderly individuals was found as 55.50 ± 6.08, and their Successful Aging Scale total mean score was determined to be 38.91 ± 2.05. A positive correlation was found between Health Literacy Scale total mean score and Successful Aging Scale total mean score, while a negative relationship was determined between Successful Aging Scale mean score and HbA1c values (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION As a result of the study, it was concluded that elderly patients with type 2 diabetes who had high levels of health literacy had high levels of successful aging as well.

Abstract
We are facing a growing aging population, along with increasing pressure on health systems, caused by the impact of chronic co-morbidities (i.e. cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases) and functional disabilities as people age. Relatively simple preventive lifestyle interventions, such as dietary restriction and physical exercise, are important contributors to active and healthy aging in the general population. However, as shown in model organisms or in 'in vitro' conditions, lifestyle-independent interventions may have additional health benefits and can even be conceived as possible reversers of the aging process. Thus, pharmaceutical laboratories, research institutes, and universities are putting more and more effort into finding new molecular pathways and druggable targets to develop gerotherapeutics. One approach is to target the driving mechanisms of aging, some of which, like cellular senescence and impaired autophagy, we discussed in an update on the biology of aging at AgingFit 2023 in Lille, France. We underline the importance of carefully and extensively testing senotherapeutics, given the pleiotropism and heterogeneity of targeted senescent cells within different organs, at different time frames. Other druggable targets emerging from new putative mechanisms, like those based on transcriptome imbalance, nucleophagy, protein phosphatase depletion, glutamine metabolism, or seno-antigenicity, have been evidenced by recent preclinical studies in classical models of aging but need to be validated in humans. Finally, we highlight several approaches in the discovery of biomarkers of healthy aging, as well as for the prediction of neurodegenerative diseases and the evaluation of rejuvenation strategies.

Abstract
This study investigated associations between change in the food environment and change in measured body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in the Christchurch Health and Development Study (CHDS) birth cohort. Our findings suggest that cohort members who experienced the greatest proportional change towards better access to fast food outlets had the slightly larger increases in BMI and WC. Contrastingly, cohort members who experienced the greatest proportional change towards shorter distance and better access to supermarkets had slightly smaller increases in BMI and WC. Our findings may help explain the changes in BMI and WC at a population level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The worldwide society is currently facing an epidemiological shift due to the significant improvement in life expectancy and increase in the elderly population. This shift requires the public and scientific community to highlight successful aging (SA), as an indicator representing the quality of elderly people's health. SA is a subjective, complex, and multidimensional concept; thus, its meaning or measuring is a difficult task. This study seeks to identify the most affecting factors on SA and fed them as input variables for constructing predictive models using machine learning (ML) algorithms. METHODS Data from 1465 adults aged ≥ 60 years who were referred to health centers in Abadan city (Iran) between 2021 and 2022 were collected by interview. First, binary logistic regression (BLR) was used to identify the main factors influencing SA. Second, eight ML algorithms, including adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), bootstrap aggregating (Bagging), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XG-Boost), random forest (RF), J-48, multilayered perceptron (MLP), Naïve Bayes (NB), and support vector machine (SVM), were trained to predict SA. Finally, their performance was evaluated using metrics derived from the confusion matrix to determine the best model. RESULTS The experimental results showed that 44 factors had a meaningful relationship with SA as the output class. In total, the RF algorithm with sensitivity = 0.95 ± 0.01, specificity = 0.94 ± 0.01, accuracy = 0.94 ± 0.005, and F-score = 0.94 ± 0.003 yielded the best performance for predicting SA. CONCLUSIONS Compared to other selected ML methods, the effectiveness of the RF as a bagging algorithm in predicting SA was significantly better. Our developed prediction models can provide, gerontologists, geriatric nursing, healthcare administrators, and policymakers with a reliable and responsive tool to improve elderly outcomes.

Abstract
The concept of aging is complex, including many related phenotypes such as healthspan, lifespan, extreme longevity, frailty and epigenetic aging, suggesting shared biological underpinnings; however, aging-related endpoints have been primarily assessed individually. Using data from these traits and multivariate genome-wide association study methods, we modeled their underlying genetic factor ('mvAge'). mvAge (effective n = ~1.9 million participants of European ancestry) identified 52 independent variants in 38 genomic loci. Twenty variants were novel (not reported in input genome-wide association studies). Transcriptomic imputation identified age-relevant genes, including VEGFA and PHB1. Drug-target Mendelian randomization with metformin target genes showed a beneficial impact on mvAge (P value = 8.41 × 10-5). Similarly, genetically proxied thiazolidinediones (P value = 3.50 × 10-10), proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 inhibition (P value = 1.62 × 10-6), angiopoietin-like protein 4, beta blockers and calcium channel blockers also had beneficial Mendelian randomization estimates. Extending the drug-target Mendelian randomization framework to 3,947 protein-coding genes prioritized 122 targets. Together, these findings will inform future studies aimed at improving healthy aging.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the diabetes burden in elderly individuals along with successful ageing, which defines how well individual ages contribute to coping with the disease and diabetes management. This study also aimed to evaluate the relationship between diabetes burden and successful ageing in elderly individuals with type 2 diabetes. METHODS The data for this descriptive study were collected from 526 individuals who were 65 years old patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the diabetes polyclinic of a research and training hospital between January and June 2021. RESULTS It was found that the Successful Ageing Scale score was higher in women, those who had regular diabetes control, and those who had easy access to health services. Elderly Diabetes Burden Scale scores were found to be higher in men, those whose diabetes treatment was insulin, and those with poor perceived health status. No statistically significant relationship was determined between the Elderly Diabetes Burden Scale total score and the Successful Ageing Scale total score (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Accordingly, by enabling the elderly to have easy access to healthcare services, preventing complications, and providing elderly healthcare services, it will be possible to reduce the diabetes burden in the elderly and enable them to age successfully.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women have a higher life expectancy than men but experience more years with physical disabilities in daily life at older ages, especially women with a migration background. This pinpoints older women as an important target group for strategies that stimulate healthy lifestyle, which benefits healthy aging. Our study investigates motivators and barriers for healthy lifestyles and perspectives on determinants of healthy aging of older women. This provides essential information for developing targeted strategies. METHODS Data was collected by semi-structured digital interviews from February till June 2021. Women aged 55 years and older living in the Netherlands (n = 34) with a native Dutch (n = 24), Turkish (n = 6) or Moroccan (n = 4) migration background were included. Two main subjects were investigated: (1) motivators and barriers on their current lifestyles regarding smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, diet and sleep and (2) perspectives on determinants of healthy aging. Interviews were analyzed using Krueger's framework. RESULTS Personal health was the most common motivator for a healthy lifestyle. In addition, peer pressure and being outdoors were specific motivators for physical activity. Bad weather conditions and personal dislike to be active were specific barriers. The social environment, personal preferences and personal belief to compensate with other healthy lifestyle behaviors were barriers for low alcohol consumption. Personal preferences (liking unhealthy food and not making time) were the main barriers for a healthy diet. Sleep was not perceived as a form of lifestyle behavior, but rather as a personal trait. Since there were no smokers, specific barriers were not mentioned. For Turkish-Dutch and Moroccan-Dutch women, additional barriers and motivators were culture and religion. These were strong motivators to abstain from alcohol consumption and smoking, but a barrier for a healthy diet. With regard to perspectives on determinants of healthy aging, positive views on aging and being physically active were perceived as most important. Women often wanted to increase their physical activity or healthy diet to stimulate healthy aging. Among Turkish-Dutch and Moroccan-Dutch women, healthy aging was also perceived as something in the hands of God. CONCLUSIONS Although motivators and barriers for a healthy lifestyle and perspectives on healthy aging vary for distinct lifestyles, personal health is a common motivator across all lifestyles. Having a migration background added culture and religion as distinct barriers and motivations. Strategies to improve lifestyle among older women should therefore have a tailored, culture sensitive approach (if applicable) for distinct lifestyle factors.

Abstract
We conducted this study to determine the correlation between old age adaptation, aging in place, and depression in older adults. We carried out the descriptive correlational study with older adults (n:319) Ağrı Provincial Directorate of Health between October 2021 and April 2022. "SPSS 25 and Amos 23 programs" were used in the analysis of the data. Python 3.11.1, Microsoft Power BI programs were used for machine learning and graphical visualizations. In the study, it was determined that the model for the relationship between aging at a place level, adaptation difficulty in older adults level, and geriatric depression level was significant (F(2,316) = 37.002, p = 0.001). The aging in place level and the adaptation difficulty in older adults level explain 18.5% of the total variance of the level of geriatric depression. In the regression model, it was determined that the increase in the level of aging in place (t = -6.081, p < 0.001) and the decrease in the level of adaptation difficulty in older adults (t = 4.107, p < 0.001) of the participants caused a statistical decrease in the level of "Geriatric Depression." It has been determined that adaptation difficulty in older adults has a moderator role in the relationship between geriatric depression level and aging in place level. In our data set, while the estimate of the presence of depression was 40 % with logistic regression analysis, it was 97 % with Random Forest. The study determined that as the level of aging in -place increased and the adaptation difficulty in older adults decreased, and depression decreased.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Predicting healthy physiological aging is of major interest within public health research. However, longitudinal studies into predictors of healthy physiological aging that include numerous exposures from different domains (i.e. the exposome) are scarce. Our aim is to identify the most important exposome-related predictors of healthy physiological aging over the life course and across generations. METHODS Data were used from 2815 participants from four generations (generation 1960s/1950s/1940s/1930s aged respectively 20-29/30-39/40-49/50-59 years old at baseline, wave 1) of the Doetinchem Cohort Study who were measured every 5 years for 30 years. The Healthy Aging Index, a physiological aging index consisting of blood pressure, glucose, creatinine, lung function, and cognitive functioning, was measured at age 46-85 years (wave 6). The average exposure and trend of exposure over time of demographic, lifestyle, environmental, and biological exposures were included, resulting in 86 exposures. Random forest was used to identify important predictors. RESULTS The most important predictors of healthy physiological aging were overweight-related (BMI, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio) and cholesterol-related (using cholesterol lowering medication, HDL and total cholesterol) measures. Diet and educational level also ranked in the top of important exposures. No substantial differences were observed in the predictors of healthy physiological aging across generations. The final prediction model's performance was modest with an R2 of 17%. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, our findings suggest that longitudinal cardiometabolic exposures (i.e. overweight- and cholesterol-related measures) are most important in predicting healthy physiological aging. This finding was similar across generations. More work is needed to confirm our findings in other study populations.

Abstract
Background: Successful aging (SA) is considered an indicator of satisfaction of older people. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Otago Exercise Program (OEP) on SA among older women. Materials and Methods: quasi-experimental research with a control group was conducted in 2021 on 120 older women in Shiraz city, south Iran. Eligible samples were selected by a three-stage cluster sampling method and were classified into two equal intervention and control groups. Eight training sessions (exercises) were conducted for the intervention group using the OEP. SA questionnaire was completed at the beginning and 2 months after the intervention. The data were analyzed using the IBM-SPSS version 26, and the effect sizes were extracted. Results: The mean age of samples in the intervention and control groups was 69.71 + 59.59 and 68.83 + 5.08 years, respectively. Although there was no significant difference in the mean scores of SA between the two groups at the beginning of the study, 2 months after the intervention implementation, the mean scores of SA increased significantly in the intervention group (t = 8.57, p ≤ .001). Conclusion: It seems that OEP is an effective strategy for supporting SA in older people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is a chief risk factor for most chronic illnesses and infirmities. The growth in the aged population increases medical costs, thus imposing a heavy financial burden on families and communities. Successful aging (SA) is a positive and qualitative view of aging. From a biomedical perspective, SA is defined as the absence of diseases or disability disorders. This is distinct from normal aging, which is associated with age-related deterioration in physical and cognitive functions. From a social perspective, SA highlights life satisfaction and individual well-being, usually attained through socialization. It is an abstract and multidimensional concept surrounded by imprecision about its definition and measurement. Our study attempted to find the most effective features of SA as defined by Rowe and Kahn's theory. The determined features were used as input parameters of six machine learning (ML) algorithms to create and validate predictive models for SA. METHODS In this retrospective study, the raw data set was first pre-processed; then, based on the data of a sample of 983, five basic ML techniques including artificial neural network, decision tree, support vector machine, Naïve Bayes, and k-nearest neighbors (K-NN) with one ensemble method (that gathers 30 K-NN algorithms as weak learners) were trained. Finally, the prediction result was yielded using the majority vote method based on the output of the generated base models. RESULTS The experimental results revealed that the predictive system has been more successful in predicting SA with a 93% precision, 92.40% specificity, 87.80% sensitivity, 90.31% F-measure, 89.62% accuracy, and a ROC of 96.10%, using a five-fold cross-validation procedure. CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that ML techniques potentially have satisfactory performance in supporting the SA-related decisions of social and health policymakers. The KNN-based ensemble algorithm is superior to the other ML models in classifying people into SA and non-SA classes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies often evaluate mental health and well-being in association with individual health behaviours although evaluating multiple health behaviours that co-occur in real life may reveal important insights into the overall association. Also, the underlying pathways of how lifestyle might affect our health are still under debate. Here, we studied the mediation of different health behaviours or lifestyle factors on mental health and its effect on core markers of ageing: telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA content (mtDNAc). METHODS In this study, 6054 adults from the 2018 Belgian Health Interview Survey (BHIS) were included. Mental health and well-being outcomes included psychological and severe psychological distress, vitality, life satisfaction, self-perceived health, depressive and generalised anxiety disorder and suicidal ideation. A lifestyle score integrating diet, physical activity, smoking status, alcohol consumption and BMI was created and validated. On a subset of 739 participants, leucocyte TL and mtDNAc were assessed using qPCR. Generalised linear mixed models were used while adjusting for a priori chosen covariates. RESULTS The average age (SD) of the study population was 49.9 (17.5) years, and 48.8% were men. A one-point increment in the lifestyle score was associated with lower odds (ranging from 0.56 to 0.74) for all studied mental health outcomes and with a 1.74% (95% CI: 0.11, 3.40%) longer TL and 4.07% (95% CI: 2.01, 6.17%) higher mtDNAc. Psychological distress and suicidal ideation were associated with a lower mtDNAc of - 4.62% (95% CI: - 8.85, - 0.20%) and - 7.83% (95% CI: - 14.77, - 0.34%), respectively. No associations were found between mental health and TL. CONCLUSIONS In this large-scale study, we showed the positive association between a healthy lifestyle and both biological ageing and different dimensions of mental health and well-being. We also indicated that living a healthy lifestyle contributes to more favourable biological ageing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Active lifestyles are related to higher levels of cognitive functioning. Fewer studies have examined the importance of engaging in different activities (activity variety) for cognitive functioning. Moreover, it is unclear whether activity variety in specific domains (i.e., cognitive, physical, or social) is important for cognitive health. The current study examined whether overall activity variety as well as variety in specific domains relate to cognitive functioning. METHODS In Waves 2 and 3 of the Survey of Midlife Development in the United States, 3,337 adults reported their activity engagement and completed a cognitive battery. For longitudinal analyses, 2,049 participants were classified into 4 groups based on their rank ordering of activity variety across 9 years (remained high, increased, decreased, or remained low). RESULTS Cross-sectional analyses revealed that overall activity variety was related to higher cognitive functioning over and above activity frequency; physical and social activity variety each contributed significantly and uniquely to this association. Longitudinal analyses revealed that those with consistently low overall activity variety at both waves had lower cognitive functioning at Wave 3 than those with high activity variety at either wave, after adjusting for cognitive functioning at Wave 2. Those with consistently high or increasing social activity variety had higher cognitive functioning at Wave 3 than participants with low activity variety at both waves. DISCUSSION Findings suggest that activity variety, particularly in the social domain, is related to concurrent and future cognitive function across adulthood.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the relationships between aging attitudes and the outcomes of successful aging, including whether aging attitudinal types moderate psychological adjustment in the context of medical and mental health diagnoses. METHODS In total, 409 community-dwelling women aged 40-79 years in Australia completed the Reactions to Aging Questionnaire (RAQ), Geriatric Depression Scale, Center of Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, and Geriatric Anxiety Inventory. Information about medical and mental health diagnoses were collected. RESULTS Overall, aging attitudes and all three RAQ subscales were negatively correlated with scores on measures of depression and anxiety, and number of medical diagnoses. Attitudinal types toward aging were found to moderate the relationship between the number of mental health diagnoses and scores on the psychological measures of depression but not anxiety. Unique RAQ domain-specific relationships were found with the number of mental health diagnoses. CONCLUSIONS The findings support the link between aging attitudes and psychological outcomes, the potential clinical value of RAQ attitudinal typologies classification as well as a multidimensional conceptualization of aging attitudes. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS The findings reinforce the need for efforts to reduce ageism on a societal level, as well as informing clinical decision-making with older clients.

Abstract
Whether changes in health behaviors can improve successful aging has not been well explored. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of health-related behaviors and changes on successful aging in Indonesian older adults. Data were from the fourth and fifth waves of the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS), the participants were aged 60 years and older and who completed both waves (n = 1289). Successful aging indicators were defined as no chronic diseases, no physical function difficulties, no depressive symptoms, intact cognitive function, with social support, and with social participation. Health-related behaviors focused on smoking, physical activities, and protein intake. A logistic regression analysis was conducted. The overall successful aging rate in 2007 was 23.6%, and it had decreased to 5.6% by 2014. There were gender differences in smoking, physical activities, and behavioral changes, including promoting increased physical activity, no smoking/smoking cessation, and adequate protein intake by older adults. Quitting smoking, performing medium physical activity, and increasing protein intake were protective factors for successful aging, but the effects of behavioral changes differed by gender. Health-related behaviors and changes may impact successful aging among older adults. A healthy lifestyle is suggested to be adopted as early as possible in one's life course.

Abstract
An increasing number of subjects are affected by health problems related to the advanced involutional processes. It is extremely important to identify the determinants of the rate of occurrence of physiological, psychological, and social manifestations of aging. The aim was to determine how factors such as lifestyle, level of education, or severity of stressful life events indicate the appearance of aging symptoms in adult men. The material consisted of data of ethnically homogeneous group of 355 men (32−87 years), invited to the study as a part of the Wroclaw Male Study research project. The analyzed features included (1) socioeconomic status: age, educational level, marital status, and having children; (2) elements of lifestyle: alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, and physical activity; (3) major and most important stressful life events—the Social Readjustment Rating Scale; (4) symptoms related to male aging—the Aging Males’ Symptoms. The backward stepwise regression models, the Kruskal−Wallis test, and multiple comparisons of mean ranks were used. Noncentrality parameter δ (delta), two-tailed critical values of the test, and test power with α = 0.05 were calculated. Among the analyzed variables, age was most strongly associated with the intensity of almost all groups of andropausal symptoms in men (p = 0.0001), followed by the level of education (p = 0.0001) and the intensity of stressful life events (p = 0.0108). Selected lifestyle elements turned out to be much less important (p > 0.01). Preventive actions aimed at slowing down the intensification of involutional processes, including teaching strategies for coping with stressful life events, should be implemented in groups of men with specific risk factors from an early age.

Abstract
Prolonging survival in good health is a fundamental societal goal. However, the leading determinants of disability-free survival in healthy older people have not been well established. Data from ASPREE, a bi-national placebo-controlled trial of aspirin with 4.7 years median follow-up, was analysed. At enrolment, participants were healthy and without prior cardiovascular events, dementia or persistent physical disability. Disability-free survival outcome was defined as absence of dementia, persistent disability or death. Selection of potential predictors from amongst 25 biomedical, psychosocial and lifestyle variables including recognized geriatric risk factors, utilizing a machine-learning approach. Separate models were developed for men and women. The selected predictors were evaluated in a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model and validated internally by bootstrapping. We included 19,114 Australian and US participants aged ≥65 years (median 74 years, IQR 71.6-77.7). Common predictors of a worse prognosis in both sexes included higher age, lower Modified Mini-Mental State Examination score, lower gait speed, lower grip strength and abnormal (low or elevated) body mass index. Additional risk factors for men included current smoking, and abnormal eGFR. In women, diabetes and depression were additional predictors. The biased-corrected areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for the final prognostic models at 5 years were 0.72 for men and 0.75 for women. Final models showed good calibration between the observed and predicted risks. We developed a prediction model in which age, cognitive function and gait speed were the strongest predictors of disability-free survival in healthy older people.Trial registration Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT01038583).

Abstract
Chronological age (CA) predicts health status but its impact on health varies with anthropometry, socioeconomic status (SES), and lifestyle behaviors. Biological age (BA) is, therefore, considered a more precise predictor of health status. We aimed to develop a BA prediction model from self-assessed risk factors and validate it as an indicator for predicting the risk of chronic disease. A total of 101,980 healthy participants from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study were included in this study. BA was computed based on body measurements, SES, lifestyle behaviors, and presence of comorbidities using elastic net regression analysis. The effects of BA on diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HT), combination of DM and HT, and chronic kidney disease were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression. A younger BA was associated with a lower risk of DM (HR = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.55-0.72), hypertension (HR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.68-0.81), and combination of DM and HT (HR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.47-0.91). The largest risk of disease was seen in those with a BA higher than their CA. A consistent association was also observed within the 5-year follow-up. BA, therefore, is an effective tool for detecting high-risk groups and preventing further risk of chronic diseases through individual and population-level interventions.

Abstract
Introduction The identification of typologies of health care users and their specific characteristics can be performed using cluster analysis. This statistical approach aggregates similar users based on their common health-related behavior. This study aims to examine health care utilization patterns using cluster analysis; and the associations of health care user types with sociodemographic, health-related and health-system related factors. Methods Cross-sectional data from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey were used. Health care utilization was measured by consultations with a variety of medical, allied and complementary health practitioners or the use of several interventions (exercise, diet, supplementation etc.) within the past 12 months (used vs. not used). A model-based clustering approach based on finite normal mixture modelling, and several indices of cluster fit were determined. Health care utilization within the cluster was analyzed descriptively, and independent predictors of belonging to the respective clusters were analyzed using logistic regression models including sociodemographic, health- and health insurance-related factors. Results Nine distinct health care user types were identified, ranging from nearly non-use of health care modalities to over-utilization of medical, allied and complementary health care. Several sociodemographic and health-related characteristics were predictive of belonging to the respective health care user types, including age, gender, health status, education, income, ethnicity, and health care coverage. Conclusions Cluster analysis can be used to identify typical health care utilization patterns based on empirical data; and those typologies are related to a variety of sociodemographic and health-related characteristics. These findings on individual differences regarding health care access and utilization can inform future health care research and policy regarding how to improve accessibility of different medical approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knowledge is lacking on distinct health-related risk profiles among the substantial group of middle-aged and older adults with risky alcohol use (AU). Such profiles could inform the planning of interventions and prevention. AIMS To 1) identify distinct health-related profiles based on different types of health-related functioning limitations and distress and 2) assess associations between these profiles and age, sex, and health-relevant behaviors (e.g., smoking). METHODS Cross-sectional nation-wide Danish health survey with n = 6630 adults aged 55-64 and n = 7605 aged 65-74 with at least risky AU (>84 g ethanol/week in women, >168 in men). Health-related risk profiles were identified with Latent Class Analysis (LCA). Multinomial regression was applied for the association between risk profiles and auxiliary variables. RESULTS A six-class LCA solution was found among 55-64 year-olds (classes: 'Normative' [61%], 'Distress' [6%], 'Mental health limitations [5%]', 'Pain-related distress [10%]', 'Broad limitations and pain distress [7%]', 'High overall burden' [11%]) and a five-class solution among 65-74 year-olds. Most classes were comparable across age groups. The 'Distress'-class characterized by pain-distress, tiredness-distress, and sleep-related distress (6%) only showed in the younger group. In both age groups, auxiliary covariates (high-risk AU, possible alcohol use disorder, weekly smoking) were positively associated with problematic profile membership (vs. normative class membership). CONCLUSION Middle-aged and older adults with risky AU have distinct health-related profiles relevant for the form and content of prevention and interventions. Despite their distinct features, almost all problematic health profiles warrant careful attention regarding high-risk AU and probable alcohol use disorder.

Background: Monitoring phasic responses of heart rate variability (HRV) in terms of HRV reactivity [i. e., the absolute change from resting state to on-task (i.e., absolute values of HRV measured during exercise)] might provide useful insights into the individual psychophysiological responses of healthy middle-aged to older adults (HOA) to cognitive and physical exercises. Objectives: To summarize the evidence of phasic HRV responses to cognitive and physical exercises, and to evaluate key moderating factors influencing these responses. Methods: A systematic review with meta-analyses was performed. Publications up to May 2020 of the databases Medline (EBSCO), Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Psycinfo, Web of Science, Scopus, and Pedro were considered. Controlled clinical trials and observational studies measuring phasic HRV responses to cognitive and/or physical exercises in HOA (≥50 years) were included. Results: The initial search identified 6,828 articles, of which 43 were included into the systematic review. Compared to resting state, vagally-mediated HRV indices were significantly reduced during all types of exercises [Hedge's g = -0.608, 95 % CI (-0.999 to -0.218), p = 0.002] indicating a significant parasympathetic withdrawal compared to rest. The key moderating variables of these responses identified included exercise intensity for physical exercises, and participant characteristics (i.e., level of cognitive functioning, physical fitness), task demands (i.e., task complexity and modality) and the individual responses to these cognitive challenges for cognitive exercises. In particular, higher task demands (task complexity and physical exercise intensity) were related to larger HRV reactivities. Better physical fitness and cognition were associated with lower HRV reactivities. Additionally, HRV reactivity appeared to be sensitive to training-induced cognitive and neural changes. Conclusion: HRV reactivity seems to be a promising biomarker for monitoring internal training load and evaluating neurobiological effects of training interventions. Further research is warranted to evaluate the potential of HRV reactivity as a monitoring parameter to guide cognitive-motor training interventions and/or as a biomarker for cognitive impairment. This may facilitate the early detection of cognitive impairment as well as allow individualized training adaptations that, in turn, support the healthy aging process by optimizing individual exercise dose and progression of cognitive-motor training.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The strategy of successful ageing is an important means to deal with the challenges of the current ageing society. This paper aims to explore the effects of different intensities of physical activity on the successful ageing of the elderly. METHODS Our data were from wave 4 of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS), involving 9026 residents aged 60 years and older. The intensity of physical activity was divided into three levels: vigorous, moderate and mild. The concept of successful ageing adopted a four-dimensional model of life satisfaction added to the theoretical model of Rowe and Kahn's. Propensity score matching (PSM) with controlling nine confounding factors were used to analyse the effects of different intensities of physical activity. RESULTS The percentage of successful ageing was 1.88% among all subjects. Among them, 30.26, 29.57 and 29.40% of the elderly often participated in vigorous, moderate and mild physical activity, respectively. The results of PSM showed that participation in moderate activity increased the probability of successful ageing of the elderly by 0.76-0.78% (P < 0.001), while participation in vigorous and mild physical activity had no significant effect on successful ageing (P > 0.05). Moderate physical activity had statistically significant effects on four components of successful aging, including major disease, physical function, life satisfaction, and social participation (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Moderate-intensity physical activity was most beneficial to the successful ageing of the elderly and should be promoted in the elderly population.

Abstract
Background The importance of SA (Successful aging) has been emphasized in recent years, with focus shifting towards attaining healthier aging rather than longevity. However, the influence of SA and its changes on mental health such as depression remains a relatively unexplored area in gerontology. Therefore, we investigated the longitudinal association between changes in SA and depressive symptoms in Korean older adults. Methods This study comprised a longitudinal sample of older adults aged ≥ 45 years, drawn from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2006–2018). Changes in SA status was determined using the Rowe and Kahn model over two consecutive years. Using an adjusted generalized estimating equation model, we examined the association between changes in successful aging status, namely SA and NSA (Non-successful aging), and depressive symptoms. Results Compared to the SA→SA group, depressive symptom risk in the NSA→NSA and SA→NSA groups were higher in men [(OR, 1.16; 95 % CI, 1.13–1.18), (OR, 1.11; 95 % CI, 1.08–1.13), respectively] and in women [(OR, 1.15; 95 % CI, 1.13–1.18), (OR, 1.11; 95 % CI, 1.09–1.14), respectively]. Subgroup analysis of the dimensions of successful aging revealed that low or worsening criteria of successful aging status in men and women were associated with depressive symptoms. Conclusions Korean older adults who continuously failed to attain or maintain successful aging status had the highest risk of depressive symptoms. These results could further assist in establishing policies and interventions that promote successful aging and subsequently protect the mental health of the Korean older adult population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have assessed multidimensional models for predicting successful aging that incorporate both physical and cognitive-psychosocial elements among minority populations. This study aimed to establish a comprehensive lifestyle behavioral factors (cLBF) score and an integrative successful aging (ISA) score and explore their associations among older Puerto Rican adults. METHODS Data were assessed from 889 adults (45-75 years) participating in the longitudinal (baseline and 2-year follow-up) Boston Puerto Rican Health Study. Higher cLBF score (range 0-10) indicates healthier behaviors (nonsmoking, lack of sedentarism, physical activity, high diet quality, and adequate sleep). The physical domain score of ISA included 8 components (functional impairment, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, arthritis, osteoporosis) and ranged 0-11. The cognitive-psychosocial domain of ISA included 5 components (cognitive impairment, depressive symptoms, social support, perceived stress, and self-rated health) and ranged 0-10. The sum of both domains comprised the ISA score, ranging 0-21. Higher scores of ISA and its domains indicate more successful aging. RESULTS At 2 years, the mean ± SD of cLBF score was 4.9 ± 1.8, and ISA was 10.1 ± 3.3. In multivariable-adjusted models, cLBF score was significantly and positively associated with 2-year change in overall ISA (β [95% CI]: 0.15 [0.07, 0.24] points), in physical domain (0.09 [0.04, 0.13] points), and in cognitive-psychosocial domain (0.08 [0.02, 0.14] points). CONCLUSIONS Maintaining healthier lifestyle behaviors may contribute to successful aging through both physical and cognitive-psychosocial domains. The results support using a multidimensional definition of successful aging in Puerto Ricans and evaluating it in other populations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the current prevalence, and sociodemographic, military, health, and psychosocial correlates of successful aging in older US veterans. METHODS Data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of 3,001 US veterans aged greater than or equal to 60 years (mean = 73). Multiple regression and relative importance analyses were conducted to identify key factors associated with successful aging. RESULTS A total 79% of older veterans rated themselves as aging successfully. Physical and mental health difficulties emerged as the strongest correlates of successful aging (71% variance explained), while psychosocial factors, most notably perceived resilience, purpose in life, and positive expectations about emotional aging, explained 29% of the variance in this outcome. CONCLUSIONS Nearly 4 of 5 US veterans rate themselves as successful agers. Prevention and treatment efforts designed to mitigate physical and mental health difficulties, and promote protective psychosocial factors may help bolster successful aging in this population.

Abstract
Mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) is a putative biomarker of oxidative stress and biological aging. Modifiable factors, including physical activity (PA), avoidance of heavy alcohol use and smoking, and maintaining good mental health, may reduce oxidative stress and promote healthy aging. Yet, limited data exist regarding how these factors are associated with mtDNAcn or whether age, sex or race/ethnicity moderate associations. In this cross-sectional study, we selected 391 adults (183 non-Hispanic White, 110 Black and 98 Hispanic; mean = 67 years) from the VITAL-DEP (VITamin D and OmegA-3 TriaL-Depression Endpoint Prevention) ancillary to the VITAL trial. We estimated associations between lifestyle and behavioral factors (PA, alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and depression) and log-transformed mtDNAcn using multivariable linear regression models. MtDNAcn was not correlated with chronological age; women had ~17% higher mtDNAcn compared to men. There were no significant associations between PA measures (frequency, amount or intensity) or alcohol consumption with mtDNAcn. Cigarette smoking (per 5 pack-years) was significantly associated with mtDNAcn (percent difference = -2.9% (95% confidence interval (CI) = -5.4%, -0.4%)); a large contrast was observed among heavy vs. non-smokers (≥30 vs. 0 pack-years): percent difference = -28.5% (95% CI = -44.2%, -8.3%). The estimate of mtDNAcn was suggestively different for past vs. no depression history (percent difference = -15.1% 95% CI = -30.8%, 4.1%), but this difference was not statistically significant. The association between smoking and log-mtDNAcn varied by sex and race/ethnicity; it was stronger in men and Black participants. While chance findings cannot be excluded, results from this study support associations of smoking, but not chronological age, with mtDNAcn and suggest nuanced considerations of mtDNAcn as indicative of varying oxidative stress states vs. biological aging itself.

Abstract
Earlier menopause onset has been linked to a greater risk of cardiovascular disease. Both menopause onset and cardiovascular disease risk vary by geographical region, race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status. As such, it is plausible to hypothesize that these factors may influence the association of menopause onset and cardiovascular disease risk. Taking a global approach, this narrative review focuses on how geographic, racial/ethnic and socioeconomic factors might influence menopause onset, mainly natural menopause, and possibly its association with cardiovascular disease risk. The contribution of genetic factors to menopause onset variation is also summarized. A clear gap in the literature has been identified. Several meta-analyses have assessed the question of whether menopause onset is related to cardiovascular disease risk by combining large populations of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic status across wide geographical regions. None of these analyses adequately assessed how these factors might modify the association of menopause onset and cardiovascular disease risk. Testing such a question requires the study of a large group of women of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds across different geographical locations with good documentation of their socioeconomic status, clinical and environmental factors. The increasing evidence supporting age at menopause onset as a marker of overall health calls for worldwide efforts to implement a standardized approach to define age at menopause in both the clinical and the research fields.
