Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the association between the quality of antenatal care (ANC) service utilisation and adverse birth outcomes among adolescent women in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). METHODS A two-level mixed-effects model was employed using the recent Demographic Health Survey (DHS) data from 22 SSA countries. Both bivariable and multivariable multilevel analyses were conducted to assess the association between individual and community level factors with adverse birth outcomes. The results of the fixed effects model were interpreted in the form of adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). RESULTS In SSA, 23.5 % of adolescent mothers experienced adverse birth outcomes. This study found that receiving high quality ANC was associated with a 28 % reduction in the likelihood of adverse birth outcomes (AOR = 0.72, 95 % CI: 0.63, 0.83). Among the individual-level factors, middle-aged adolescence (AOR = 1.23, 95 % CI: 1.11, 1.36), being a female newborn (AOR = 1.15, 95 % CI: 1.05, 1.26), single marital status (AOR = 0.87, 95 % CI: 0.78, 0.96) and higher educational status (AOR = 0.83, 95 % CI: 0.74, 0.93) were significantly associated with adverse birth outcomes. From the community-level variables, women from Eastern Africa had positive significant association with adverse birth outcomes (AOR = 1.30, 95 % CI: 1.15, 1.46). CONCLUSIONS Nearly one-fourth of adolescent women in SSA experienced at least one type of adverse birth outcome. Low quality of ANC was significantly associated with adverse birth outcomes. Policymakers need to consider a comprehensive, essential, and minimal package of ANC to enhance the quality of ANC, which is crucial for better adolescent birth outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of chronic diseases, which are significant contributors to maternal deaths and adverse new-born outcomes, is increasing among women of reproductive age in northern Ghana. This emerging health issue raises serious concerns about the potential exacerbation of adverse birth outcomes in this setting, given that it is one of the regions in the country with a high incidence of such outcomes. We investigated the risks of preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and concurrent PTB and LBW among women with preexisting chronic conditions prior to conception in the Tamale Metropolis of northern Ghana. METHODS A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 420 postpartum women randomly selected from five public health facilities. Information was collected electronically on participants' self-reported experience of chronic conditions, namely, hypertension, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, and sickle cell disease, prior to their most recent pregnancy. Information on gestational age at delivery and birth weight was also collected. Regression modeling was used to quantify the risk of adverse newborn outcomes among women who reported preexisting chronic conditions prior to pregnancy. RESULTS Chronic diseases affected 31.2% of our sample. Of these, 28.6% had a single chronic condition, while 2.6% had comorbid chronic conditions. The prevalence of PTB was 24.0% (95% CI: 20.2, 28.4), 27.6% (95% CI: 23.5, 32.1) of the newborns were born LBW, and 17.4% (95% CI: 14.0, 21.3) of the pregnancies resulted in both PTB and LBW. Compared with those without chronic conditions, women with chronic conditions prior to conception had a greater risk of PTB (aOR = 6.78, 95% CI: 3.36, 13.68), LBW (aOR = 5.75, 95% CI: 2.96, 11.18), and the co-occurrence of PTB and LBW (aOR = 7.55, 95% CI: 3.32, 17.18). CONCLUSIONS We observed significant rates of PTB, LBW, and the co-occurrence of PTB and LBW among women who were already aware that they had preexisting chronic conditions prior to conception. Our findings highlight a potential gap in the quality of prenatal care provided to these women before delivery. Preconception care may offer an opportunity to address preexisting chronic conditions in women before pregnancy and potentially improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infant survival is an important factor in any community's health. Low birth weight affects babies not only during their infancy but also has long-term consequences for their health as adults. Unfortunately, Sub-Saharan Africa as a region is still dealing with the burden of Low birth weight (LBW), and Tanzania as a part of this region is no exception. So this study aimed to determine the Magnitude of Low Birth Weight and Its Associated Maternal Factors among Women of Reproductive Age who gave birth to live babies. METHODS The study used analytical cross-sectional study design to analyze secondary data from the Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey and Malaria Indicators Survey 2015-2016. A total of 4,644 women of reproductive age who gave birth to live babies within five years preceding the survey were included in the study. Both bivariate and multivariable logistics regression analyses were used to assess maternal factors associated with low birth weight. RESULTS The prevalence of LBW was 262(6.2%). After adjusting for confounders, the maternal factors associated with LBW were Age group of a pregnant woman [Less than 20 years (aOR = 1.907 CI = 1.134-3.205) in reference to those aged more than 34years], Number of ANC visits made [Inadequate visits (aOR = 1.612 CI = 1.266-2.05)], parity [para 2-4 (aOR = 0.609 CI = 0.453-0.818), para 5+ (aOR = 0.612 CI = 0.397-0.944)] and area of residence [Unguja (aOR = 1.981 CI = 1.367-2.87). CONCLUSION The prevalence of low birth weight in Tanzania remains high. Women's age, parity, number of Antenatal care visits (ANC), and area of residence were found to be maternal factors associated with LBW. Thus, early prenatal diagnosis of risk factors for low birth weight in high-risk pregnant women may help to reduce the LBW burden in Tanzania and its detrimental effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Low birth weight (LBW) is an important indicator of newborn health and can have long-term implications for a child's development. Spatial exploratory analysis provides a toolkit to gain insight into inequalities in LBW. Few studies in Ghana have explored the spatial distribution of LBW to understand the extent of the problem geographically. This study explores individual and cluster-level distributions of LBW using spatial exploration components for common determinants from nationally representative survey data. DESIGN We used data from the 2017 Ghana Maternal Health Survey and conducted individual-level and cluster-level analyses of LBW with place and zone of residence in both bivariate and multivariate analyses. By incorporating spatial and survey designs methodology, logistic and Poisson regression models were used to model LBW. SETTING Ghana. PARTICIPANTS A total of 4127 women aged between 15 and 49 years were included in the individual-level analysis and 864 clusters corresponding to birth weight. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES Individual and cluster-level distribution for LBW using spatial components for common determinants. RESULTS In the individual-level analysis, place and zone of residence were significantly associated with LBW in the bivariate model but not in a multivariate model. Hotspot analysis indicated the presence of LBW clusters in the middle and northern zones of Ghana. Compared with rural areas, clusters in urban areas had significantly lower LBW (p=0.017). Clusters in the northern zone were significantly associated with higher LBW (p=0.018) compared with the coastal zones. CONCLUSION Our findings from choropleth hotspot maps suggest LBW clusters in Ghana's northern and middle zones. Disparities between the rural and urban continuum require specific attention to bridge the healthcare system gap for Ghana's northern and middle zones.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low birth weight is a significant risk factor associated with high rates of neonatal and infant mortality, particularly in developing countries. However, most studies conducted on this topic in Ethiopia have small sample sizes, often focusing on specific areas and using standard models employing maximum likelihood estimation, leading to potential bias and inaccurate coverage probability. METHODS This study used a novel approach, the Bayesian rank likelihood method, within a latent traits model, to estimate parameters and provide a nationwide estimate of low birth weight and its risk factors in Ethiopia. Data from the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) of 2016 were used as a data source for the study. Data stratified all regions into urban and rural areas. Among 15, 680 representative selected households, the analysis included complete cases from 10, 641 children (0-59 months). The evaluation of model performance considered metrics such as the root mean square error, the mean absolute error, and the probability coverage of the corresponding 95% confidence intervals of the estimates. RESULTS Based on the values of root mean square error, mean absolute error, and probability coverage, the estimates obtained from the proposed model outperform the classical estimates. According to the result, 40.92% of the children were born with low birth weight. The study also found that low birth weight is unevenly distributed across different regions of the country with the highest amounts of variation observed in the Afar, Somali and Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples regions as represented by the latent trait parameter of the model. In contrast, the lowest low birth weight variation was recorded in the Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, and Amhara regions. Furthermore, there were significant associations between birth weight and several factors, including the age of the mother, number of antenatal care visits, order of birth and the body mass index as indicated by the average posterior beta values of (β1= -0.269, CI=-0.320, -0.220), (β2= -0.235, CI=-0.268, -0.202), (β3= -0.120, CI=-0.162, -0.074) and (β5= -0.257, CI=-0.291, -0.225). CONCLUSIONS The study showed that the low birth weight estimates obtained from the latent trait model outperform the classical estimates. The study also revealed that the prevalence of low birth weight varies between different regions of the country, indicating the need for targeted interventions in areas with a higher prevalence. To effectively reduce the prevalence of low birth weight and improve maternal and child health outcomes, it is important to concentrate efforts on regions with a higher burden of low birth weight. This will help implement interventions that are tailored to the unique challenges and needs of each area. Health institutions should take measures to reduce low birth weight, with a special focus on the factors identified in this study.

Abstract
Birth weight significantly determines newborns immediate and future health. Globally, the incidence of both low birth weight (LBW) and macrosomia have increased dramatically including sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. However, there is limited study on the magnitude and associated factors of birth weight in SSA. Thus, thus study investigated factors associated factors of birth weight in SSA using multilevel multinomial logistic regression analysis. The latest demographic and health survey (DHS) data of 36 sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries was used for this study. A total of a weighted sample of 207,548 live births for whom birth weight data were available were used. Multilevel multinomial logistic regression model was fitted to identify factors associated with birth weight. Variables with p-value < 0.2 in the bivariable analysis were considered for the multivariable analysis. In the multivariable multilevel multinomial logistic regression analysis, the adjusted Relative Risk Ratio (aRRR) with the 95% confidence interval (CI) was reported to declare the statistical significance and strength of association. The prevalence of LBW and macrosomia in SSA were 10.44% (95% CI 10.31%, 10.57%) and 8.33% (95% CI 8.21%, 8.45%), respectively. Maternal education level, household wealth status, age, and the number of pregnancies were among the individual-level variables associated with both LBW and macrosomia in the final multilevel multinomial logistic regression analysis. The community-level factors that had a significant association with both macrosomia and LBW were the place of residence and the sub-Saharan African region. The study found a significant association between LBW and distance to the health facility, while macrosomia had a significant association with parity, marital status, and desired pregnancy. In SSA, macrosomia and LBW were found to be major public health issues. Maternal education, household wealth status, age, place of residence, number of pregnancies, distance to the health facility, and parity were found to be significant factors of LBW and macrosomia in this study. Reducing the double burden (low birth weight and macrosomia) and its related short- and long-term effects, therefore, calls for improving mothers' socioeconomic status and expanding access to and availability of health care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Ethiopia, various maternal and child health interventions, including comprehensive and basic obstetric cares were conducted to curb high neonatal and infant morbidity and mortality. As such, adverse birth outcome has been a public health concern in the country. Thus, this study aimed to assess the burden and associated factors with adverse birth outcomes among women who gave birth at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS A health facility-based cross-sectional study was employed from 30 March to 01 May 2021 at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. A total of 455 women were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. A binary logistic regression model was fitted Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with 95%CI and p-value < 0.05 were used to declare factors significantly associated with adverse birth outcomes. RESULTS In this study, 28% of women had adverse birth outcomes (8.4% stillbirths, 22.9% preterm births, and 10.11% low birth weights). Women aged 20-34) (AOR: 0.32, 95%CI: 0.14, 0.76), rural dwellers (AOR: 2.7, 95%CI: 1.06, 6.32), lack of ANC visits (AOR: 4.10, 95%CI: 1.55, 10.85), APH (AOR: 3.0, 95%CI: 1.27, 7.10) and fever (AOR: 7.80, 95%CI: 3.57, 17.02) were associated to stillbirths. Multiple pregnancy (AOR:7.30, 95%CI:1.75, 20.47), rural dwellers (AOR:4.60, 95%CI:1.36, 15.52), preterm births (AOR: 8.60, 95% CI: 3.88, 19.23), previous perinatal death (AOR:2.90, 95%CI:1.35, 6.24), fever (AOR:2.7,95%CI:1.17 ,6.23) and premature rupture of membrane (AOR:2.60, 95% CI:1.02, 6.57) were affecting low birth weights. In addition, previous antepartum hemorrhage (AOR: 2.40, 95%CI: 1.37, 4.10) and fever (AOR: 3.8, 95%CI: 2.13, 6.89) were also factors contributing to preterm births. CONCLUSION Adverse birth outcomes continue to pose a significant public health concern. Such high rates of adverse birth outcomes, such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and birth defects, can have serious and long-lasting effects on the health and well-being of both infants and their families, and the community at large. As such, public health efforts are crucial in addressing and mitigating the risk factors associated with adverse birth outcomes. This may involve implementing interventions and policies to improve maternal health, access to prenatal care and nutritional support, and reducing exposure to environmental risks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low birthweight (LBW), infants weighing less than 2,500 g, is a global health concern associated with high infant morbidity and mortality rates. This study investigates LBW prevalence and its relation to maternal sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle behaviors factors in the United States (US). METHODS This analysis used the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) data from 2016 to 2021, including n = 225,443 children aged 0-17 years. 18,131 had LBW (<2,500 g), and 2810 had very LBW (VLBW) (<1,500 g). Logistic regression calculated odds ratios (OR) using LBW as the dependent variable, adjusting for various factors. RESULTS Between 2016 and 2021 in the United States, LBW prevalence averaged 9.31%, with VLBW at 1.50%. Mothers aged 18-35, White, had the lowest LBW (7.63%) and VLBW (1.17%) rates. Mothers aged ≤18 years, black, had the highest LBW (15.45%) and VLBW infants (4.70%). Maternal age emerged as a significant LBW factor, with an OR of 1.27 for ≤18 and 1.19 for >35. Children in poor health had the highest OR (2.87). Race/ethnicity and other disparities were observed. CONCLUSION Our study highlights LBW risk among non-White mothers with specific criteria, emphasizing the need for continued exploration of intersectional targets for change that are exacerbating LBW disparities among marginalized populations which may be artificially attributed to biologic determinants and individual-level risk factors. In-depth analysis of repressive structures at the root of inequalities demand continued research on macro levels of influence. Customized healthcare reform holds the greatest potential to disrupt the patterns contributing to poor health outcomes among LBW children, and will ultimately maximize the reach and effectiveness of health promotion strategies and clinical practices aimed to improve universal maternal and infant health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) has remained high (24.9%) in the South Asian region with a significant impact on newborn survival. This region bears nearly 40% of global burden of LBW. While antenatal care (ANC) and iron-folic acid supplementation independently have been considered effective for improving maternal and newborn outcomes, the evidence on the combined effect of these two supplements on LBW is lacking. This study aimed to examine the synergistic association of ANC and iron-folic acid supplementation on LBW in the South Asian region using pooled data from six South Asian countries. METHODS Nationally representative surveys from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, and Afghanistan were included in the study. Birth weight and the prevalence of LBW for singleton last-born children were reported using descriptive statistics. The association between LBW and ANC visits and the interaction between iron-folic acid consumption and ANC were examined using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS The mean birth weight in the region was 2841.8 g with an LBW prevalence of 17.1%. Country-specific prevalence ranged from 11.4% in Nepal to 22.4% in Pakistan. Not attending ANC visits (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 1.24; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.16, 1.34) and not consuming iron-folic acid (AOR: 1.14; 95% CI: 1.08, 1.21) were significantly associated with a higher likelihood of LBW. Furthermore, jointly, having < 4 ANC visits and < 180 days of iron-folic acid supplementation was associated with a higher likelihood (AOR: 1.29; 95% CI: 1.22, 1.36) of having LBW compared to those who had ≥ 4 ANC visits and ≥ 180 days of iron-folic acid consumption after controlling for key confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS The current study provides important evidence on the synergy between ANC visits and iron-folic acid consumption during pregnancy to capitalize on the existing national maternal health programs in the South Asian region, including low-and middle-income countries for positive foetal outcomes.

Abstract
Only 14% of births had information on birth weight available at the time of birth in Ethiopia. Hence, previous studies underestimate the magnitude and associated factors of low birth weight (LBW). As a result, the goal of this study is to fill those gaps in the previous studies. An institution-based cross-sectional study was employed. Binary logistic regression was used to identify the associated factors. In this study, the magnitude of LBW was 13.06%. History of chronic medical illness (AOR = 3; 95% CI: (1.02, 9.17)), haemoglobin level during pregnancy (AOR = 0.23; 95% CI: (0.10, 0.50)), iron/folic acid supplementation (AOR = 0.27; 95% CI: (0.10, 0.72)) and extra meal during pregnancy (AOR = 3.2; 95% CI: (1.52, 7.00)) were significantly associated with LBW. The magnitude of LBW in this study was comparable to the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) report from 2016. It is better to intervene in those identified factors in order to reduce LBW.Impact StatementWhat is already known on this subject? Low birth weight (LBW) accounts for 60-80% of all neonatal deaths each year. In developing countries like Ethiopia, LBW is a major public health concern. Almost half of the world's infants are not weighed at birth, a figure that is especially high in sub-Saharan Africa including Ethiopia.What do the results of this study add? Only 14% of births had information on birth weight available at the time of birth in Ethiopia. Hence, previous studies underestimate the magnitude and associated factors of LBW. To meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-2030 targets for neonatal and child mortality, sufficient evidence on the magnitude of LBW and associated factors must be important in order to contribute to the development of timely interventions. A history of chronic medical illness, haemoglobin level, iron/folic acid supplementation and extra meal during pregnancy was associated with LBW.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? The findings of this study will be useful in developing better health policies to prevent LBW as well as interventions that can target the identified factors.

Abstract
AIM This research aimed to evaluate health and nutritional practices of mothers during pregnancy and birth outcomes of their newborns in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), comparing semi-urban and rural areas. BACKGROUND Health and nutrition during pregnancy are crucial for adequate development of the fetus. Health care plays an important role but is often poor in rural areas of developing countries. METHODS A baseline survey of a nutritional follow-up study was conducted in two semi-urban and one rural hospital in the vicinity of Bukavu, DRC. In total, 471 mother-child pairs were recruited after delivery. Data collection included socio-demographic parameters, nutrition and health measures during pregnancy, and anthropometric parameters. Semi-urban and rural study locations were compared and predictors of birth weight evaluated. FINDINGS Semi-urban and rural mothers differed significantly in nutrition and health practices during pregnancy, as well as birth outcomes. In the rural area, there was a higher rate of newborns with low birth weight (10.7%) and lower rates of antimalarial medication (80.8%), deworming (24.6%), consumption of nutritional supplements (81.5%), and being informed about nutrition by medical staff (32.8%) during pregnancy as well as practicing family planning (3.1%) than in the semi-urban areas (2.7%, 88.6%, 88.3%; 89.3%, 46.5%, and 17.1%, respectively). Birth weight was positively predicted by increasing maternal MUAC, age, and gestational age and negatively by rural location, being primipara, being a farmer, and female newborn sex. CONCLUSION The findings highlight the importance of strengthening antenatal care activities especially in rural areas in order to ameliorate both maternal and infantile health and ensure appropriate development.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Evidence gaps limit management of small and/or nutritionally at-risk infants under 6 months and their mothers, who are at higher risk of death, illness, malnutrition and poor growth and development. These infants may be low birth weight, wasted, stunted and/or underweight. An integrated care model to guide their management (MAMI Care Pathway) is being tested in a randomised controlled trial in Ethiopia. Evaluating the extent to which an innovation is consistent with national policies and priorities will aid evidence uptake and plan for scale. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This review will evaluate the extent to which the MAMI Care Pathway is consistent with national policies that relate to the care of at-risk infants under 6 months and their mothers in Ethiopia. The objectives are to describe the range and characteristics, concepts, strategic interventions, coherence and alignment of existing policies and identify opportunities and gaps. It will be conducted in accordance with the JBI methodology for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Eligible documents include infant and maternal health, nutrition, child development, food and social welfare-related policies publicly available in English and Amharic. The protocol was registered on the Open Science Framework Registry on 20 June 2022 (https://osf.io/m4jt6).Grey literature will be identified through government and agency websites, national and subnational contacts and Google Scholar, and published policies through electronic database searches (MEDLINE, EMBASE and Global and Health Information). The searches will take place between October 2023 and March 2024. A standardised data extraction tool will be used. Descriptive analysis of data will be undertaken. Data will be mapped visually and tabulated. Results will be described in narrative form. National stakeholder discussions will inform conclusions and recommendations. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval is not required as data consist solely of publicly available material. Findings will be used to evidence national and international policy and practice.

Abstract
Inadequately diversified food consumption during pregnancy can lead to micronutrient deficiencies, which can affect maternal and newborn health outcomes. Previous studies on maternal dietary diversity have either been limited to a specific geographical region or consist entirely of systematic reviews, without meta-analyses. Thus, this study aimed to determine the pooled estimate of the association between inadequate dietary diversity during pregnancy, maternal anemia, and low birth weight in Africa. A systematic review of observational studies published between January 2000 and April 2022 was undertaken using the Google Scholar, PubMed, and CINAHL databases. The PRISMA checklist was followed to present the results. Microsoft Excel was used to abstract the data. STATA version 17 was used to analyze the data, and a random-effects meta-analysis model was applied to compute the pooled estimates. The study was registered in PROSPERO with protocol number CRD42022320873. A total of 22 publications with 9,696 participants were included in the final meta-analysis. The pooled adjusted odds ratio (AOR) for inadequate dietary diversity and maternal anemia was 2.15 (95% CI, 1.66-2.65), while that for low birth weight was 2.04 (95% CI, 1.46-2.63). The highest pooled estimate of maternal anemia was reported in Cameroon (AOR = 9.8, 95% CI: 1.68-17.92), followed by Ethiopia (AOR = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.95-3.25). Similarly, the pooled estimates of low birth weight were highest in Cameroon (AOR = 3.04, 95% CI: 1.19-4.88) and Ethiopia (AOR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.29-2.39). In Africa, pregnant mothers with inadequate dietary diversity are two times more likely to develop anemia and low birth weight. Social protection policies that prioritize pregnant women, maternal nutrition promotion in the community, and dietary counseling during antenatal care visits, using national food-based dietary guidelines, should be strengthened.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children born with adverse birth outcomes (ABOs) have a greater risk of mortality, stunting, and poor cognitive development. In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended at least eight antenatal care (ANC) contacts before delivery for a healthy mother and baby. We examined the association between compliance with this recommendation and the risk of ABOs, such as low birthweight (LBW) and preterm birth (PTB), in the Tamale Metropolitan Area of the northern region of Ghana. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study in the Tamale Metropolis of the northern region of Ghana. We analysed a systematic random sample of 402 postnatal women aged 15-49 drawn from five public health facilities. We gathered information electronically on their birth outcomes, specifically their birthweight and gestation at delivery, using a structured questionnaire. Information on women's background characteristics, including the number of ANC contacts made before delivery, was also collected. The association between the number of ANC contacts and ABOs was investigated using regression models. RESULTS We found that 37.6% (95% CI: 32.9, 42.4) of our sample had at least eight ANC contacts before delivery. We estimated that 18.9% of babies were born prematurely and 9.0% were born LBW. ABOs were found in 22.9% (95% CI: 19.0, 27.3) of babies. A minimum of eight ANC contacts before delivery reduced the risk of ABOs (adjusted IRR = 0.43; 95% CI: 0.25, 0.73), PTB (AOR = 0.28; 95% CI: 0.14, 0.58), and LBW (AOR = 0.36; 95% CI: 0.14, 0.91). CONCLUSION In the current study's setting, about a quarter of newborns have ABOs, jeopardising their survival, health, and development. Compliance with at least eight ANC contacts prior to birth was associated with a reduced incidence rate ratio of ABOs. However, less than four out of every ten pregnant women make at least eight ANC contacts before delivery. Efforts are needed to increase coverage of eight contacts among pregnant women before delivery to reduce the risk of ABOs in the study setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low birth weight (LBW) is an important factor influencing infant morbidity and mortality. Pregnant women should receive a variety of interventions during antenatal care (ANC) that are crucial in improving birth weight. ANC visits alone do not promise that women have received all recommended antenatal services. However, there are limited evidence of the relationship between ANC quality and LBW in Rwanda. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the association between quality ANC and LBW along with the factors influencing LBW and how quality ANC affects LBW in Rwandan pregnant women. METHODS The Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) are cross-sectional, nationally representative household surveys that collect population, health, and nutrition. In this Study we used three waves of Rwanda Demographic and Health Surveys 2010,2014-5 and 2019-20. A total of 16,144 women aged 15 to 49 years who had live births in the five years preceding each survey were included in this study. A stratified two-stage sampling methods was used to select the participants. The first stage involves selecting clusters (villages) from a list of all clusters in the country. The second stage involves selecting households within each cluster. A survey adjusted for clusters at multiple level and a bivariate and multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios(aOR) and 95% confidence intervals to assess the association between the outcome and independent variables. RESULTS The utilization of a high-quality ANC increased slightly over the three survey years and LBW had a slow decline. Out of 5813 women;201(3.45%) had high-quality ANC in the 2010 survey, and out of 5813 newborns,180(3.10%) were LBW. Out of 5404 women;492(9.11%) had high-quality ANC in 2015, and out of 5404 newborns,151(2.79% were LBW). Out of 5203 women,776(14.92%) had high-quality ANC in the 2020 survey year, and out of the 5206 newborns,139(2.67%) were LBW. In multivariable analysis, at a borderline limit high quality ANC was negatively associated with LBW(aOR:0.67;95%CI:0.43,1.05) compared to low-quality ANC. Higher birth orders of the newborn were negatively associated with LBW (aOR:0.63;95%CI:0.49,0.82 and aOR:0.44;95%CI:0.32,0.61 for 2nd -3rd and 4th and above respectively) compared to 1st orders newborn. Newborns from rich households were less likely to experience LBW than those from poor households (aOR:0.71;95%CI:0.55,0.91). Female newborns were associated with an increase of LBW (aOR:1.43;95% CI:1.18,1.73) than male newborns. CONCLUSION The findings confirm the fundamental importance of a high-quality ANC on LBW. The findings could be utilized to develop monitoring strategies and assess pregnancy health assistance programs with a focus on LBW reduction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Low birth weight (LBW) is an important public health indicator extensively linked to infant and child mortality, especially in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs). Globally, 15.5% of all infants are born with LBW while 95% of these occur in LMICs. This study aims to examine the prevalence and determinants of LBW in India. METHODS Data were obtained from the fifth National Family Health Survey (NFHS) round conducted during 2019-2021. The study sample included women aged 15-49 years who had a singleton pregnancy in the five years preceding the survey (N=175,240). A bivariate analysis was carried out and a logistic regression model was fitted to assess the maternal determinants affecting the birth weight among newborns. RESULTS A total of 175,240 mothers were included in the present study. The proportion of newborns with LBW was 17.29% (n=26366, 95% confidence interval [CI] 17.01, 17.57), of which 6% (n=1450, 95% CI 5.61, 6.41) had very low birth weight (less than 1500 g). An increase in the education level of women or wealth index also resulted in significantly reduced odds of LBW in the newborn. However, the number of antenatal care (ANC) visits lacked any statistically significant association with the odds of having a newborn with LBW. CONCLUSIONS The burden of LBW in India in recent years has remained stable despite impressive economic growth and increased public health spending on food security and nutritional supplementation. Strengthening the quality of ANC services for pregnant women with a focus on sensitization and awareness generation for improving maternal nutrition requires high prioritization.

Abstract
Low birth weight (LBW) has contributed to more than 80% of under-5 deaths worldwide, most occurring in low- and middle-income countries. We used the 2015 Solomon Islands Demographic and Health Survey data to identify the prevalence and risks associated with LBW in the Solomon Islands. Low birth weight prevalence estimated was 10%. After adjustment for potential confounders, we found the risk of LBW for women with a history of marijuana and kava use was 2.6 times, adjusted relative risk (aRR) 2.64 at a 95% confidence interval [0.64, 10.95] and 2.5 times [aRR: 2.50 (0.63, 9.88)] than among unexposed women, respectively. Polygamous relationship, no antenatal care, decision-making by another person were 84% [aRR: 1.84 (1.15, 2.93)], 73% [aRR: 1.73 (0.96, 3.13)], and 73% [aRR: 1.73 (0.96, 3.13)] than among unexposed women, respectively. We also found that 10% and 4% of LBW cases in the Solomon Islands were attributable to a household of more than 5 members and tobacco and cigarette use history. We concluded that LBW in the Solomon Islands relied more on behavioral risk factors, including substance use and health and social risk factors. We recommended further study on kava use and its impact on pregnancy and LBW.

Abstract
The study aimed to analyze the target of the policy to decrease low birth weight (LBW) in Indonesia. This cross-sectional study used a sample of live births in last five years preceding the survey of birth weight. Data collection took place from July to September 2017. The weighted sample size was 17,848 participants. The variables analyzed included residence, age, marital status, education, employment, parity, and wealth. The study employed binary logistic regression in the final stage to determine the target of policy regarding LBW. The results showed that women in urban areas were 1.200 times more likely to deliver babies with LBW than women in rural areas. All age groups were less likely to deliver babies with LBW than those aged 45-49. The study also found all marital statuses had a lower likelihood of providing babies with LBW than those who had never been in a marriage. Women of all education levels had a greater risk of giving birth to babies with LBW than women with higher education levels. Unemployed women had 1.033 times more chances of delivering babies with LBW than employed women. Primiparous women were 1.132 times more likely to give birth to babies with LBW than multiparous women. Overall, the women in all wealth status categories had a higher probability of delivering babies with LBW than the wealthiest groups. The study concluded that policymakers should target women who live in urban areas, are old, have never been married, have low education, and are unemployed, primiparous, and poor to decrease LBW cases in Indonesia.

Abstract
Introduction Low birth weight is one of the important predictors of perinatal survival, infant morbidity, and mortality, as well as the risk of developmental disabilities and diseases in the future. Objectives The study aimed to identify the associated factors of low birth weight among newborns at Debre Tabor referral hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from January 1, 2021 to October 30, 2021 at Debre Tabor Referral Hospital. A total sample of 420 newborn birth records was considered. The binary logistic regression model was used to assess the associated factors of low birth weight. The results are presented as crude odds ratios and adjusted odds ratios (AOR) together with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Results In this study, 422 participants were included. Rural residence (AOR = 2.01; 95%CI 1.10-3.69), married marital status (AOR = 0.82; 95%CI 0.78-0.86), formal education (AOR = 0.79; 95%CI 0.67-0.92), smoking during pregnancy (AOR = 1.19; 95%CI 1.07-1.33), attended antenatal care (ANC) visits (AOR = 0.57; 95%CI 0.35-0.91), diabetes during pregnancy (AOR = 4.34; 95%CI 3.50-5.39), iron supplementation (AOR = 0.23; 95%CI 0.20-0.25), and maternal history of anemia (AOR = 5.87; 95%CI 2.67-12.89) were significantly associated with low birth weight of newborns. Conclusion This finding showed that residence, marital status, educational status, smoking during pregnancy, ANC visit, diabetes during pregnancy, iron supplementation, and mother's history of anemia were significantly associated with low birth weight. Therefore, policy makers and public health experts/practitioners should plan smoking preventive public health promotion campaigns. Furthermore, it is important that all health professionals properly manage the possible cause of LBW during pregnancy.

Abstract
Background Low Birth Weight (LBW) continues to be a prominent universal cause of various short- and long-term health hazards throughout infancy and adulthood. However, no study has revealed the socioeconomic inequalities in LBW among South Asian countries. This study assesses the socioeconomic inequalities among under-five South Asian children with LBW. Methods Secondary data were derived from six (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal, and Pakistan) nationally representative South Asian Demographic and Health Surveys conducted between 2015 and 2021, and included 170,547 under-five years of age children. The study employed the concentration curve and concentration index to assess the socioeconomic inequalities of those with LBW. Additionally, mixed-effect logistic regression was applied to determine the factors associated with LBW. Results A significant negative concentration index indicates the wealth-related and education-related inequalities of LBW among under-five South Asian children. LBW is highly concentrated in the socio-economically poor section of the society. Our study found statistically significant negative concentration index in all South Asian countries: Afghanistan (Education: -0.108), Bangladesh (wealth: -0.070 & education: -0.083), India (wealth: -0.059 & education: -0.052), Nepal (by wealth: -0.064 & by education: -0.080), and Pakistan (by wealth: -0.080 & by education: -0.095). Findings from the mixed-effects logistic regression model also show that children from the poorest quintiles (AOR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.41-1.67) and illiterate mothers (AOR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.29-1.51) had higher odds of being afflicted with LBW compared to the wealthiest quintiles and educated mothers respectively. Women's pregnancy assessments, such as antenatal care utilisation, iron supplementation intake, and normal delivery mode, are significantly correlated with decreased odds of children's LBW. Conclusion There exists a strong association between LBW cases and socioeconomic inequalities among South-Asian children below five years of age. This indicates the urgent need for health education and prenatal care services for women from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan, especially those with lower socioeconomic status.

Abstract
Studies have reported significant effect of geographically shared variables on new-born baby weight. Although there is growing use of community-based child health interventions in public health research, such as through provinces, schools, or health facilities, there has been less interest by researchers to study outlying communities to child birth weight outcomes. We apply multinomial logistic regression model diagnostics to identify outlier communities to child birth weight in Malawi. We use a random sample of 850 clusters, each with at least 7 households based on 2015-16 Malawi demographic and health survey data. There were a total of 11,680 children with measured birth weight, that was categorised as either low ([Formula: see text] grams), normal ([Formula: see text] grams) or high ([Formula: see text] grams). The analyses were done in STATA version 15 and R version 3.6.3. Based on a multinomial logit model with various socio-demographic factors associated with child birth weight, the results showed that two clusters from rural parts of Southern region of Malawi had overly influence on estimated effects of the factors on birth weight. Both clusters had normal to high birth weight babies, with no child having low birth weight. There could be some desired motherhood practices applied by mothers in the two rural clusters worth learning from by policy makers in the child healthcare sector.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Antenatal health care utilization has the potential to influence maternal and new-born health. In this study, we assessed compliance of antenatal care utilization with national and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. We also examined association of antenatal care utilization with adverse pregnancy outcomes as secondary outcome. METHODS This was a community-based cross sectional study conducted from July 2016 to November 2017 in rural south-central Ethiopia. We described antenatal care received by pregnant women, whom we followed at three prescheduled visits during pregnancy and collected birth data at time of delivery. Extent of antenatal care content received, timing of antenatal care, place of antenatal care and place and mode of delivery were obtained and computed in accordance with national and WHO guidelines. For adverse pregnancy outcomes, computed as sum of low birth weight, preterm birth, intrauterine foetal death, and stillbirth, the exposure variable used was antenatal care utilization. RESULTS Seven hundred and four (704) women participated in the study, and 536 (76.1%) had attended at least one antenatal care visit. Among women who attended antenatal care visit, majority, 421 (79.3%), had done so at health centres and hospitals, while 110 (20.7%) attended at health post. Average number of antenatal care visits was 2.5, which is less than that recommended in national and WHO guidelines. Only 18 (2.6%) women had attended antenatal care in their first trimester, which is low in contrast to the expected 100% specified in the guidelines. Less than half (47%) of the women delivered in a health facility. This is in contrast to the 100% expected health institution deliveries. Low birth weight was 7.9% (n = 48), and preterm birth was 4.9% (n = 31). There were 12 twin pregnancies, three stillbirths, 11 spontaneous abortions, and two intrauterine foetal deaths. We did not find significant association between adverse pregnancy outcomes and antenatal care utilization (COR = 1.07, 95% CI 0.62, 1.86). CONCLUSION This study showed that antenatal care service utilization in the study area was markedly low compared to that recommended in national and WHO guidelines. The obtained antenatal health care utilization was not associated with the registered adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
Low birth weight is still an important public health problem worldwide. It is a major contributor to neonatal death in developing countries, including Nepal. The government of Nepal has developed and implemented different programs to improve maternal and neonatal health, including baby's birth weight. However, low birth weight is a major maternal and child health challenge. Maternal factors determining the birth weight of neonates have been poorly assessed in previous studies in Nepal. Thus, this study aims to assess the prevalence and risk factors associated with low birth weight in Nepal. An institution-based descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in Paropakar Maternity Hospital and Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital of Kathmandu district among 308 postnatal mothers. The data was collected through the face-to-face interview technique. The data was entered in EpiData 3.1 and exported to Statistical Package and Service Solutions version 21 for analysis. Multivariate logistic regression was used to obtain an adjusted odds ratio, while p-value < 0.05 with 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was considered significant. The findings showed that 15.3% of the children had low birth weight. The mean and standard deviation of childbirth weight was 2.96±0.59 kg. Mothers belonged to Dalit ethnic (AOR = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.2-7.1), Antenatal Care visited three or fewer (AOR = 2.6, 95%CI = 1.0-6.6) and did not comply with Iron and Folic Acid supplementation (AOR = 2.1, 95% CI = 1.0-4.4) were significantly associated with low birth weight. Nearly one in every six children had low birth weight. Maternal health services such as antenatal care and compliance with a recommended dose of maternal micronutrients significantly impact on birth weight. Maternal and neonatal health programs should consider these factors to reduce adverse birth outcomes in Nepal.

Abstract
Low and high birth weight (BW) are associated with obesity later in life; however, this association has not been extensively studied in African countries. This study determines the association between BW and body composition derived from deuterium oxide (D2O) dilution in 6- to 8-year-old South African children (n = 91; 40 boys, 51 girls). BW was recorded retrospectively from the children’s Road-to-Health cards. Weight and height were measured using standard procedures, and D2O dilution was used to determine total body water and, subsequently, to determine body fat. Fatness was classified using the McCarthy centiles, set at 2nd, 85th, and 95th (underfat, overfat and obese). BW correlated with body composition measures, such as body weight (r = 0.23, p = 0.03), height (r = 0.33, p < 0.001), and fat free mass (FFM; r = 0.27, p = 0.01). When multiple regression analysis was employed, BW significantly and positively associated with FFM (β = 0.24, p = 0.013; 95% CI: 0.032; 0.441) and fat mass (β = 0.21, p = 0.02, 95%CI: 0.001; 0.412) in girls and boys combined. A total of 13% of the children had a low BW, with 21% being overweight and 17% obese. More girls than boys were overweight and obese. Intervention strategies that promote healthy uterine growth for optimal BW are needed in order to curb the global obesity pandemic.

Abstract
Maternal syphilis remains a major contributor to poor pregnancy outcomes. Syphilis point-of-care (POC) tests are now used for pregnancy screening; the effect of screening on outcomes is unclear. We enrolled women presenting to antenatal care (ANC) in a matched cohort study at a single site in Kenya tested by either a syphilis-only or an HIV/syphilis dual POC test. Syphilis POC-positive women (patients) were matched 1:2 with POC-negative women (control subjects) on gravidity, gestational age, and HIV status, and were monitored through delivery. Syphilis serum testing was performed every 8 weeks. Pregnancy outcomes were assessed up to 1 month after delivery and compared using prevalence ratios. A total of 151 women were enrolled (51 patients and 100 control subjects) at a mean of 22 weeks gestation; 24% were HIV positive and 40% were paucigravid. A positive Treponema pallidum hemagglutination test was more common among patients (64.7%) than control subjects (11.1%, P < 0.001). Only two women met the definition for incident syphilis. Pregnancy outcomes were available for 147 women. The prevalence of low birthweight (LBW) was greater among patients (15.2%) than control subjects (5.4%, P = 0.052). Of the 109 women with concordant syphilis POC and Treponema pallidum hemagglutination test results at ANC enrollment, LBW prevalence was significantly greater among test-positive (25%) than test-negative (4.9%) women (adjusted prevalence ratio, 5.84; 95% CI, 1.08-31.5). Despite treatment with penicillin, latent syphilis at ANC enrollment was associated with a more than 5-fold increased risk of LBW. Alternate implementation strategies for syphilis POC testing may be necessary to realize the potential of ANC syphilis screening to improve pregnancy outcomes.

Household food insecurity and physically demanding work during pregnancy are risk factors for low birth weight in north Shewa zone public hospitals, Central Ethiopia, 2021: a multicenter cross-sectional study. Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite numerous efforts to improve the quality of maternal and child health medical services, over 20 million babies are born with low birth weights each year globally. However, factors related to low birth weight like physically demanding work during pregnancy, intimate partner violence, and food insecurity have not been explored well in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of low birth weight and associated factors among neonates born in public Hospitals in North Shewa Zone, Central Ethiopia. METHODS A hospital-based cross-sectional study design was conducted from June 15 -to July 15, 2021, in North Shewa public hospitals. A total of 441 mothers and newborn pairs were selected by systematic random sampling. Data were collected using a pretested and structured interviewer-administered questionnaire with chart reviewing. Data entry and analysis were done using Epi Data version 3.1 and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 26 respectively. Binary logistic regression was done to identify factors associated with low birth weight. Adjusted odds ratio with its 95% confidence interval and a p-value less than 0.05 was considered to declare the statistically significant association. RESULTS The prevalence of low-birth-weight was 17.7% (95% CI: 14.3, 21.5). Pregnancy-related complication [AOR = 2.16; 95% CI:(1.12,4.18)], grand-multiparty [AOR = 2.57; 95% CI:(1.12,5.88)], physically demanding work during pregnancy [AOR = 2.19; 95% CI:(1.11,4.33)], midd-upper arm circumference less than 23 cm [AOR = 2.54; 95% CI:(1.26,5.10)], partner violence during pregnancy [AOR = 3.77; 95% CI:(1.81,7.88)], and being member of household with food insecure [AOR = 2.31; 95% CI:(1.12,4.75)] were factors significantly associated with low birth weight. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that the magnitude of low birth weight was relatively high. Women with pregnancy-related complications, grand multiparty, physically demanding work during pregnancy, intimate partner violence, mid-upper arm circumference less than 23 cm, and food insecurity should be prioritized for mitigating LBW. Health care professionals should focus on Screening pregnant women for intimate partner violence, physically demanding activities, undernutrition and providing appropriate treatment during all maternal continuum of care might be helpful.

Abstract
Introduction Over the past three decades, undernutrition has become a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children under five years globally. Low birth weight has been identified as a risk factor for child morbidity and mortality, especially among children under five years in sub-Saharan Africa. There is, however, a paucity of empirical literature establishing the association between low birth weight and undernutrition in sub-Saharan Africa. We examined the association between birth weight and nutritional status of children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. Methods Our analyses were performed on a weighted sample of 110,497 children under five years from 32 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Data were obtained from the Demographic and Health Surveys conducted from 2010 to 2019. We reported the prevalence of low birth weight and nutritional status (stunting, wasting, and underweight) for all the 32 countries using percentages. We used multilevel binary logistic regression to examine the association between birth weight and nutritional status (stunting, wasting, and underweight) of the children, controlling for covariates. The results of the regression analyses were presented using adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with 95% confidence intervals. Statistical significance was set at p<0.05. Results The prevalence of low birth weight was 5.4%, with the highest (13.1%) and lowest (0.9%) reportedin South Africa and Chad, respectively. The pooled prevalence of wasting, underweight, and stunting were 8.1%, 17.0%, and 31.3%, respectively. Niger had the highest prevalence of wasting (21.5%) and underweight (37.1%), whereas Burundi had the highest prevalence of stunting (51.7%). We found that children with low birth weight were more likely to be stunted [aOR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.58–1.78], underweight [aOR = 1.82, 95% CI = 1.70–1.94], and wasted [aOR = 1.35, 95% CI = 1.20–1.38] after controlling for covariates. Conclusion Our study has demonstrated that low birth weight is a key determinant of undernutrition among children under five in sub-Saharan Africa. Policymakers need to give special attention to improving the nutritional status of children under-five years in sub-Saharan Africa by implementing measures aimed at enhancing the weight of children. To accelerate progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 target of ending preventable deaths of newborns and under-five by 2030, it is imperative for countries in sub-Saharan Africa to intensify interventions aimed at improving maternal and child nutrition. Specific nutrition interventions such as dietary modification counselling should prioritized.

Abstract
Background and objective Low birth weight is one of the primary causes of child mortality and several diseases of future life in developing countries, especially in Southern Asia. The main objective of this study is to determine the risk factors of low birth weight and predict low birth weight babies based on machine learning algorithms. Materials and methods Low birth weight data has been taken from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey, 2017–18, which had 2351 respondents. The risk factors associated with low birth weight were investigated using binary logistic regression. Two machine learning-based classifiers (logistic regression and decision tree) were adopted to characterize and predict low birth weight. The model performances were evaluated by accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and area under the curve. Results The average percentage of low birth weight in Bangladesh was 16.2%. The respondent’s region, education, wealth index, height, twin child, and alive child were statistically significant risk factors for low birth weight babies. The logistic regression-based classifier performed 87.6% accuracy and 0.59 area under the curve for holdout (90:10) cross-validation, whereas the decision tree performed 85.4% accuracy and 0.55 area under the curve. Conclusions Logistic regression-based classifier provided the most accurate classification of low birth weight babies and has the highest accuracy. This study’s findings indicate the necessity for an efficient, cost-effective, and integrated complementary approach to reduce and correctly predict low birth weight babies in Bangladesh.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low birth weight (LBW) remains a major health problem that affects newborns worldwide. However, there has been growing evidence that antenatal care (ANC) is associated with LBW. Yet, there is a dearth of research investigating the association between ANC attendance and LBW in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study examined the association between the number of ANC visits and LBW using data from 10 sub-Saharan African countries. METHODS This study pooled data from the recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) of 10 sub-Saharan African countries conducted from 2018 to 2020. A total of 33,585 women aged 15-49 who had live births in the five years preceding the survey were included in this study. Bivariable and multivariable multilevel regression models were fitted to show the association between the number of ANC visits and LBW. Crude odds ratio (cOR) and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) at 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used in presenting the results of the regression analysis. RESULTS The pooled prevalence of LBW was 5.7%. The highest prevalence of LBW was recorded in Gambia (7.2%) with the lowest found in Sierra Leone (2.9%). In terms of eight or more ANC visits, the overall prevalence was 14.5%. Nigeria had the highest prevalence of eight or more ANC visits (43.5%) with the lowest in Rwanda (0.2%). We found a statistically significant association between the number of ANC visits and LBW. Mothers who had eight or more ANC visits were less likely to have LBW children compared to mothers who had less than eight ANC visits [cOR = 0.66; CI = 0.55 - 0.79] and this persisted after controlling for the covariates [aOR = 0.68; CI = 0.56 - 0.82]. Covariates associated with LBW were maternal age, marital status, level of education, age of child, and wealth index. CONCLUSION This study has shown a statistically significant association between ANC and LBW in SSA, with women who had eight or more ANC visits being at lower risks of giving birth to children with LBW. We found that eight or more ANC attendance was a protective factor against LBW in SSA. Therefore, it is important for sub-Saharan African countries with low prevalence of eight or more ANC attendance and high LBW prevalence to channel their efforts towards promoting more ANC attendance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the determinants of accessing healthcare among reproductive-age women in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). DESIGN, SETTING AND ANALYSIS Cross-sectional data were sourced from recent Demographic and Health Surveys in 36 SSA countries. We employed mixed-effect analysis to identify the determinants of accessing healthcare in SSA. OR and its 95% CI were reported for determinants associated with accessing healthcare. OUTCOME The outcome for this study was whether accessing healthcare was a 'big problem' or 'not a big problem'. Responses to these questions were categorised as a big problem and not a big problem. PARTICIPANTS A total weighted sample of 500 439 reproductive-age (15-49 years) women from each country's recent Demographic and Health Surveys from 2006 to 2018 were included in this study. RESULTS The pooled prevalence of healthcare access among reproductive-age women in SSA was 42.56% (95% CI 42.43% to 42.69%). The results of the mixed-effect analysis revealed that the determinants of accessing healthcare were urban residence (adjusted OR (AOR)=1.25, 95% CI 1.34 to 1.73), ability to read and write (AOR=1.15, 95% CI 1.22 to 1.28), primary education (AOR=1.08, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.12), secondary education and above (AOR=1.12, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.14), husband with primary education (AOR=1.06, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.1.12), husband with secondary education and above (AOR=1.22, 95% CI 1.18 to 1.27), middle wealth index (AOR=1.43, 95% CI 1.40 to 1.47), rich wealth index (AOR=2.19, 95% CI 2.13 to 2.24) and wanted pregnancy (AOR=1.27, 95% CI 1.19 to 1.29). CONCLUSION Healthcare access in SSA was found at 42.56%, which is very low even if Sustainable Development Goal 3.8 targeted universal health coverage for everyone so they can obtain the health services they need. The major determinants of healthcare access among reproductive-age women in SSA were urban residence, higher educational level, higher wealth index and wanted pregnancy. The findings of this study suggest and recommend strengthening and improving healthcare access for women who reside in the countryside, women with low level of education and women of low socioeconomic status.

Abstract
Every year, around 20 million women worldwide give birth to low birth weight (LBW) infants, with majority of these births occurring in low-and middle-income countries, including the Solomon Islands. Few studies have explored the pregnancy lived experience of women who deliver LBW infants. The aim of the study is to understand the lived experience of women in the Solomon Islands who gave birth to LBW infants by exploring their personal (socio-demographic and health), behavioural, social and environmental contexts. We used a qualitative descriptive approach and purposely selected 18 postnatal women with LBW infants in the Solomon Islands for an in-depth interview. All data were analysed using thematic analysis in NVivo. We identified six themes reported as being related to LBW: health issues, diet and nutrition, substance use, domestic violence, environmental conditions and antenatal care. Our findings suggest that women in the Solomon Islands are exposed to various personal, behavioural, social and environmental risk factors during pregnancy that can impact birth outcomes, particularly LBW. We recommend further research should be redirected to look at the factors/themes identified in the interviews.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The World Health Organization set a Global Nutrition Target of a 30% reduction in LBW by 2025. Maternal malnutrition/undernutrition is among the most important modifiable risk factors for impaired fetal growth. This study investigates the effect of maternal undernutrition on LBW in Sudan. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted at Saad Abuelela Hospital in Khartoum, Sudan, from May to October 2020. The sociodemographic and obstetric data of the women were gathered via questionnaire, and their mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) was measured. Maternal undernutrition was defined as a MUAC of <23 cm. RESULTS In total, 1,505 pairs of pregnant women and their newborns were enrolled in the study. The medians [interquartile (IQR)] of the age, parity, and gestational age were 27.0 (9.0) years, 1.0 (3.0), and 38.0 (2.0) weeks, respectively. The median (IQR) of the birth weight was 3,028.0 (690.0) g. Of the 1,505 participants, 182 (12.1%) delivered LBW infants. Multivariate logistic regression showed that MUAC [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.91, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.87-0.96] and gestational age (AOR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.73-0.85) were negatively associated with LBW. The level of antenatal care <2 visits (AOR = 2.10, 95% CI = 1.30-3.57) was associated with LBW. Women with undernutrition were at a higher risk of delivering LBW infants (AOR = 1.66, 95% CI = 1.09-2.53). CONCLUSION LBW is a health problem in Sudan, and women with undernutrition were at a higher risk of delivering LBW infants.

METHODS We performed a facility-based unmatched case-control study among 453 (151 cases and 302 controls) deliveries conducted at Tirunesh Beijing General Hospital. Birth records and maternal antenatal care (ANC) files were reviewed from March 1 to April 30, 2019. Consecutive sampling was employed to select study participants. Data were entered into Epi-data version 4.2.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 25 statistical software. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were computed to identify independent determinants of low birth weight. A p-value of ≤0.05 was used to declare statistical significance. RESULT Four hundred fifty-three birth records of babies (151 cases and 302 controls) were reviewed. Women who reside in rural area [AOR (CI) = 3.12 (1.63-5.98)], being merchant [(AOR (CI) = 2.90 (1.03-8.22)], danger sign during pregnancy [(AOR (CI) = 4.14 (1.68-10.2)], and maternal weight during pregnancy [(AOR (CI) = 4.94 (3.26-7.52)] were found to be a significant determinants of low birth weight. CONCLUSION Residence, occupation, danger signs, and maternal weight during pregnancy were significant determinants of low birth weight. Socioeconomic development, early detection and management of complications, and encouraging nutrition and weight during pregnancy are crucial for minimizing the risk of delivering low birth weight babies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tanzania is one of the Sub-Saharan African country with nearly 12 out of 60 million people being adolescent. The prevalence of child marriage is higher with one out of every three girls being married before reaching their 18th birthday, 5 % being married by the age of 15, and 31% by the age of 18 years. Literature shows early pregnancy is associated with Low Birth Weight (LBW) and stunting among children under 5 years. This paper explores variation and factors associated with low birth weight and stunting among children born by adolescent and non-adolescent mothers. METHODS Data from 13,266 women with children under 5 years collected as part of the 2015/2016 TDHS was re-analyzed using STATA version 14 software while accounting for survey design. A total of 6385 women (of which 7.2% were adolescent) and 8852 women (of which 6.7% were adolescent) were involved in the analysis of child birth weight and stunting respectively. Descriptive statistics stratified by maternal age was conducted with LBW and stunting as outcome variables followed by logistic regressions models controlling for confounding variables. RESULTS The proportion of obese or overweight adolescent and non-adolescent mothers was 11.8 and 36.5% respectively. Antenatal care (ANC) attendance, areas of residence and social economic status were very similar in the two maternal age groups. Non- adolescent mothers had reduced odds of giving birth to LBW babies compared to adolescent mothers (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 0.34; 95% CI: 0.22-0.50). Maternal undernutrition (AOR = 2.29; 95% CI: 1.43-3.67), being divorced, separated or widowed (AOR = 1.76; 95% CI: 1.24-2.50) and having at least four ANC visits (AOR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.49-0.83) were significantly associated with reduced odds of having a LBW. Child stunting was not associated with maternal age. Maternal high socioeconomic status (AOR = 0.69; 95% CI: 0.57-0.84) and maternal obesity or overweight (AOR = 0.77; 95% CI: 0.64-0.92) were negatively associated with stunting. Child birth weight, sex, and age were significantly associated with stunting. CONCLUSION Maternal age was a predictor of LBW but not stunting. ANC attendance and not living with a spouse increase the risk of LBW babies. Stunting was associated with low maternal body mass index (BMI), low socioeconomic status, child birth weight, gender, and age. A multi-sectoral approach is needed to address child nutrition problems with teenagers 'specific intervention that offer emotional support, and health education during pregnancies for improving immediate and later life child birth outcomes.
