Abstract
Bio-calcium derived from fish frames may offer several advantages for osteoporosis prevention. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of bio-calcium derived from skipjack tuna frames on bone loss in ovariectomized rats. Tuna bio-calcium was prepared through enzymatic hydrolysis, defatting, bleaching, and grinding processes. The bioavailability of calcium was tested using the Caco-2 cell monolayer model, showing that 13% of tuna bio-calcium was absorbed, compared to 10% for calcium carbonate. Rats were divided into the five following groups: (1) OVX, (2) sham-operated, (3), OVX + estrogen-treated (4) OVX + calcium carbonate-treated, and (5) OVX + tuna bio-calcium-treated. All groups were raised for eight weeks. Tuna bio-calcium was able to increase BV/TV by 26% in the femur and 29% in the tibia, compared to 13% and 17% in the OVX group, respectively. Trabecular thickness in the femur upsurged to 360 µm in the tuna group, while a thickness of 290 µm was observed in the control. Additionally, osteoclast numbers were reduced to 5 N.Oc/mm in the femur and 6 N.Oc/mm in the tibia in the tuna group, compared to 35 and 45 N.Oc/mm in the control. Overall, tuna bio-calcium effectively prevented bone loss and can serve as a promising natural alternative for managing osteoporosis.

Abstract
Calcium is a fundamental and integrative element and helps to ensure optimal health by regulating various physiological and pathological processes. While there is substantiated evidence confirming the beneficial effects of calcium in the treatment, management, and prevention of various health conditions, including cancer, conflicting studies are imperative to acknowledge the potential negative role of calcium supplementation. The studies on calcium supplementation showed that a specific dose can help in the maintenance of good human health, and in the control of different types of diseases, including cancer. Calcium alone and when combined with vitamin D, emerges as a promising therapeutic option for efficiently managing cancer growth, when used with chemotherapy. Combination therapy is considered a more effective approach for treating advanced types of colorectal cancer. Nevertheless, several challenges drastically influence the treatment of cancer, such as individual discrepancy, drug resistance, and stage of cancer, among others. Henceforth, novel preventive, reliable therapeutic modalities are essential to control and reduce the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC). The calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) plays a pivotal role in calcium homeostasis, metabolism, and regulation of oncogenesis. Numerous studies have underscored the potential of CaSR, a G protein-coupled receptor, as a potential biomarker and target for colorectal cancer prevention and treatment. The multifaceted involvement of CaSR in anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic processes paves the way for its utilization in the diagnosis and management of colorectal cancer. The current review highlights the important role of supplemental calcium in overall health and disease, along with the exploration of intricate mechanisms of CaSR pathways in the management and prevention of colorectal cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the essential role of calcium in vital biological functions, diet low in calcium (DLC) is associated with various diseases. However, there is a lack of study about the current prevalence and health burden due to DLC using reliable data sources. METHODS We used data from the Global Burden of Disease study 2019 (GBD 2019) to estimate the prevalence and health burden of DLC in 204 countries from 1990 to 2019, by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI). The estimates were produced in DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression tool. Summary exposure value (SEV) was used to show the prevalence of DLC, while diseases adjusted life year (DALY) was used to represent the disease burden. The disease burden was estimated for DLC-induced colorectal cancer. Spearman Rank Order correlation was used for correlation analysis, and estimated annual percentage (EAPC) was used to reflect the temporal trends. RESULTS From 1990 to 2019, the global prevalence of DLC decreased (EAPC of SEV, -0.47; 95% CI, -0.5 to -0.43), but have increased in Oceania region and in many countries, such as United Arab Emirates, New Zealand, Japan, and France. The global DALYs associated with low in calcium were estimated to be 3.14 million (95% uncertainty interval (UI), 2.25-4.26 million) in 2019, with an age standardized rate of 38.2 (95% UI, 27.2-51.8) per 100,000. Unlike the prevalence, the global age standardized DALY rates has remained unchanged (EAPC, -0.03; 95% CI, -0.12 to 0.07), but has increased in over 80 of the 204 countries, located mainly in Asia, Africa, and South America. In all years and regions, the age standardized SEV and DALY rates were higher in male people than that in female people. The prevalence (rho = -0.823; P < 0.001) and disease burden (rho = -0.433; P < 0.001) associated with diet in low calcium were strongly correlated to SDI. The prevalence decreased with age, but the DALY rates increased with age and peaked at about 90 years. The prevalence of DLC has decreased worldwide and in most countries, but the disease burden of DLC induced colorectal cancer has increased in over 40% of countries worldwide. CONCLUSION Countries with low sociodemographic level and male people are more likely to experience the risk of DLC and related disease burden. Related measures in improve dietary calcium intake are in need to address diet in low calcium related health problems.

Abstract
AIM Breastmilk calcium concentrations can vary between lactating women and over the lactation period. This study assessed breastmilk calcium concentrations among Palestinian lactating women. METHODS The demographic and dietary variables of the lactating women were collected using a questionnaire. The women provided a sample of about 5 mL of breastmilk using hand expression. Breastmilk calcium concentrations were quantified using an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometric method. RESULTS Breastmilk samples were taken from 240 lactating women. The mean breastmilk calcium concentration was 285.4 ± 115.1 mg/L. Lower breastmilk calcium concentrations were associated with age, lactating period, unemployment, dissatisfaction with income and insufficient consumption of vitamins and minerals. CONCLUSION Breastmilk calcium concentrations were affected by demographic variables of the lactating women and insufficient consumption of vitamins and minerals. The findings reported in this study are informative to healthcare providers and decision makers who might be interested in improving the health of lactating women and their infants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although small fish are an important source of micronutrients, the relationship between their intake and mortality remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the association between intake of small fish and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. DESIGN We used the data from a cohort study in Japan. The frequency of the intake of small fish was assessed using a validated FFQ. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) for all-cause and cause-specific mortality according to the frequency of the intake of small fish by sex were estimated using a Cox proportional hazard model with adjustments for covariates. SETTING The Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort Study. PARTICIPANTS A total of 80 802 participants (34 555 males and 46 247 females), aged 35-69 years. RESULTS During a mean follow-up of 9·0 years, we identified 2482 deaths including 1495 cancer-related deaths. The intake of small fish was statistically significantly and inversely associated with the risk of all-cause and cancer mortality in females. The multivariable-adjusted HR (95 % CI) in females for all-cause mortality according to the intake were 0·68 (0·55, 0·85) for intakes 1-3 times/month, 0·72 (0·57, 0·90) for 1-2 times/week and 0·69 (0·54, 0·88) for ≥ 3 times/week, compared with the rare intake. The corresponding HR (95 % CI) in females for cancer mortality were 0·72 (0·54, 0·96), 0·71 (0·53, 0·96) and 0·64 (0·46, 0·89), respectively. No statistically significant association was observed in males. CONCLUSIONS Intake of small fish may reduce the risk of all-cause and cancer mortality in Japanese females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypoparathyroidism (HP) is a rare endocrine disease commonly caused by the removal or damage of parathyroid glands during surgery and resulting in transient (tHP) or chronic (cHP) disease. cHP is associated with multiple complications and comorbid conditions; however, the economic burden has not been well characterized. The objective of this study was to evaluate the healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and costs associated with post-surgical cHP, using tHP as a reference. METHODS This analysis of a US claims database included patients with both an insurance claim for HP and thyroid/neck surgery between October 2014 and December 2019. cHP was defined as an HP claim ≥ 6 months following surgery and tHP was defined as only one HP claim < 6 months following surgery. The cHP index date was the first HP diagnosis claim following their qualifying surgery claim, whereas the tHP index date was the last HP diagnosis claim following the qualifying surgery claim. Patients were continuously enrolled at least 1 year pre- and post-index. Patients' demographic and clinical characteristics, all-cause HCRU, and costs were descriptively analyzed. Total all-cause costs were calculated as the sum of payments for hospitalizations, emergency department, office/clinic visits, and pharmacy. RESULTS A total of 1,406 cHP and 773 tHP patients met inclusion criteria. The average age (52.1 years cHP, 53.5 years tHP) and representation of females (83.2% cHP, 81.2% tHP) were similar for both groups. Neck dissection surgery was more prevalent in cHP patients (23.6%) than tHP patients (5.3%). During the 1-2 year follow-up period, cHP patients had a higher prevalence of inpatient admissions (17.4%), and emergency visits (26.0%) than the reference group -tHP patients (14.4% and 21.4% respectively). Among those with a hospitalization, the average number of hospitalizations was 1.5-fold higher for cHP patients. cHP patients also saw more specialists, including endocrinologists (28.7% cHP, 15.8% tHP), cardiologists (16.7% cHP, 9.7% tHP), and nephrologists (4.6% cHP, 3.3% tHP). CONCLUSION This study demonstrates the increased healthcare burden of cHP on the healthcare system in contrast to patients with tHP. Effective treatment options are needed to minimize the additional resources utilized by patients whose HP becomes chronic.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of dietary deficiency and supplementation of calcium, zinc, copper, cobalt, manganese or selenium on minerals content in the longissimus dorsi (LD), biceps femoris (BF) and triceps brachii (TB) of grazing Mongolian sheep. Methods We randomly divided 98 sheep into 7 treatment groups and fed them specific diets for 60 days: a total mineral nutrition diet (LCG), a calcium deficiency diet (LCa), a zinc deficiency diet (LZn), a copper deficiency diet (LCu), a cobalt deficiency diet (LCo), a manganese deficiency diet (LMn) and a selenium deficiency diet (LSe). Then 7 sheep from each group were slaughtered and samples of LD, BF and TB were collected for mineral content analysis. The remaining sheep in each group were subsequently fed specific diets for an additional 41 days: a total mineral nutrition diet (SCG), a calcium supplementation diet (SCa), a zinc supplementation diet (SZn), a copper supplementation diet (SCu), a cobalt supplementation diet (SCo), a manganese supplementation diet (SMn) and a selenium supplementation diet (SSe). Afterward, all sheep were slaughtered, and muscle samples were collected and analyzed. Results Significant findings emerged that LCa decreased sulfur (S) content in BF and increased Ca content in LD and BF, while SCa increased S and Ca content in BF and TB, respectively (P < 0.05). LZn decreased Zn, S, and potassium (K) content in LD and BF, while SZn increased Zn and S content in LD and BF, respectively (P < 0.05). LCu decreased Cu and iron (Fe) content in LD and TB, while SCu increased Fe content in TB (P < 0.05). LCo decreased phosphorus, S, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn content in LD (P < 0.05). LMn decreased Mn content and increased K content in TB, while SMn decreased K content in BF and TB (P < 0.05). LSe and SSe decreased and increased Se content in LD, BF, and TB, respectively (P < 0.05). Conclusion Dietary mineral levels have varying effects on lamb meat minerals content. It is important to ensure an adequate intake of minerals in the diet to enhance the mineral nutrition of lamb meat.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pregnant women with hypertensive disorders are at increased risk for inflammatory diseases and oxidative stress. The dilemma raised by the best dosage of calcium supplementation on these factors is evident. The aim of the current study was to examine the effects of calcium on biomarkers of the purinergic system, inflammation and oxidative stress, which are factors contributing to vascular damage in pregnant women at high risk of pre-eclampsia. METHODS A prospective, double-blind and placebo-controlled study conducted with 101 women at risk of pre-eclampsia were randomized to take 500 mg calcium/day or 1,500 mg calcium/day or placebo for 6 weeks from the 20th gestational week until delivery. Fasting blood samples were collected at the beginning of the study and 6 weeks after the intervention. RESULTS Taking calcium supplements (500 mg calcium/day) led to a significant increase in ATP hydrolysis (p < 0.05), NTPDase activity with increased hydrolysis of ADP and AMP nucleotides in platelets and lymphocytes. In the intragroup analysis IL-2, IL-6, IL-4 and interferon-ɣ presented lower values in the calcium 1,500 mg/day group (p < 0.005). Oxidative stress was assessed by TBARS pro-oxidant marker, with an increase for the calcium groups when compared to the placebo group. The Vitamin C antioxidant marker presented a significant increase (p < 0.005) for the group that received high calcium doses. CONCLUSIONS Calcium administration for 6 weeks had antioxidant action and positively modulated the purinergic system and inflammatory markers in pregnant women at risk of pre-eclampsia.

Abstract
Two fermenters, Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA) and the active dry yellow wine yeast (HY), were utilized to ferment cattle bones in order to release calcium. The influences of fermenters and the fermentation process on the calcium release capacity, particle properties, morphology, and chemical composition of bone powders were assessed, and the underlying mechanism was discussed. The results showed that LA had a better capacity of acid production than yeast, and therefore released more calcium during the fermentation of bone powders. The released calcium in the fermentation broth mainly existed in the forms of free Ca2+ ions, organic acid-bound calcium and a small amount of calcium-peptide chelate. For bone powders, the fermentation induced swollen bone particles, increased particle size, and significant changes of the internal chemical structure. Therefore, fermentation has a great potential in the processing of bone-derived products, particularly to provide new ideas for the development of calcium supplement products.

Abstract
Urolithiasis, commonly known as kidney stones, is characterized by the formation of hard deposits in the urinary tract. These stones can cause severe pain and discomfort, and their management typically involves a combination of medical interventions and lifestyle modifications. According to the literature, 30% and 50% of urolithiasis cases recur. Between 9 and 12% of persons in industrialised countries are predicted to have urolithiasis at some time. Due to the high frequency of stone formation, recurrent nature, and prevalence in adults, it has a significant impact on society, the person, and the health care system. Adopting the best prophylactic measures is crucial in light of these developments to decrease the impact of urolithiasis on individuals and society. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the potential role of nutraceuticals in the management of urolithiasis. Nutraceuticals, such as herbal extracts, vitamins, minerals, and probiotics, have gained recognition for their potential in promoting urinary health and reducing the risk of urolithiasis. These compounds can aid in various ways, including inhibiting crystal formation, enhancing urine pH balance, reducing urinary calcium excretion, and supporting kidney function. Additionally, nutraceuticals can help alleviate symptoms associated with urolithiasis, such as pain and inflammation. While medical interventions remain crucial, incorporating nutraceuticals into a comprehensive management plan can offer a holistic approach to urolithiasis, improving patient outcomes and quality of life. Therefore, nutraceuticals may be a desirable choice for treating and avoiding recurring urolithiasis for patients and medical professionals. Therefore, the present study has focused on nutraceuticals' role in preventing urolithiasis.

Abstract
Introduction Hybrid nanoflowers are structures consisting of organic (enzymes, proteins, nucleic acids) and inorganic components (mostly metal phosphates) with a flower-like hierarchical structure. Novel hybrid nanoflowers based on bovine serum albumin (BSA) and hydroxyapatite (HA) were obtained and characterized. Study on BSA-HA nanoflowers as potential drug delivery system is reported for the first time. Methods Embedding ciprofloxacin in the structure of hybrid nanoflowers was confirmed by ATR-FTIR and thermogravimetric analysis. The inorganic phase of the nanoflowers was determined by X-ray diffraction. UV‒Vis spectroscopy was used to evaluate the release profiles of ciprofloxacin from nanoflowers in buffer solutions at pH 7.4 and 5. The agar disk diffusion method was used to study the antibacterial activity of the synthesized nanoflowers against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Results Bovine serum albumin - hydroxyapatite nanoflowers were obtained with diameters of ca. 1-2 µm. The kinetics of ciprofloxacin release from nanoflowers were described by the Korsmeyer-Peppas model. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized nanoflowers was demonstrated against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, two main pathogens found in osteomyelitis. Conclusion The formulated nanoflowers may act as an efficient local antibiotic delivery system. Due to the use of nonhazardous, biodegradable components and benign synthesis, hybrid nanoflowers are very promising drug delivery systems that could be applied in the treatment of skeletal system infections.

Abstract
The side effects and safety issues tied to calcium supplementation raise questions about its necessity in osteoporosis treatment. We retrospectively evaluated 189 postmenopausal osteoporosis patients treated with denosumab for 12 months. Patients exhibited neither renal dysfunction nor compromised general dietary intake. Patients were divided into three groups as follows: group A, weekly vitamin D 7000 IU; group B, daily vitamin D 1000 IU with elemental calcium 100 mg; and group C, daily vitamin D 1000 IU with elemental calcium 500 mg. All groups showed significant increases in bone density: +6.4 ± 4.7% for the lumbar spine, +2.2 ± 3.5% for the femoral neck, and +2.4 ± 3.8% for the total hip in group A; +7.0 ± 10.9% for the lumbar spine, +2.3 ± 5.2% for the femoral neck, and +2.4 ± 3.8% for the total hip in group B; and + 6.7 ± 8.7% for the lumbar spine, +2.5 ± 8.4% for the femoral neck, and +2.3 ± 4.0% for the total hip in group C. Serum calcium levels increased over time in all three groups with no significant difference. Changes in CTX and P1NP levels did not differ between the groups (all p > 0.05). With regular dietary intake, calcium supplementation levels showed no significant effect on bone density, bone marker changes, or hypocalcemia incidence during denosumab treatment.

Abstract
The impact of the dietary incorporation of 7% Ulva lactuca, a green seaweed, on the quality and nutritional value of piglet's meat was assessed. U. lactuca is rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds but its cell wall is composed of complex polysaccharides that reduce their bioavailability. Therefore, the effect of supplementing piglet diets with exogenous carbohydrases was also assessed here. A total of 40 male weaned piglets were divided into four dietary groups, each with 10 piglets: control (wheat, maize and soybean meal-based diet), UL (7% U. lactuca replacing the control diet), UL + R (UL and 0.005% Rovabio®), and UL + E (UL and 0.01% ulvan lyase). The piglets were fed the diets for 2 weeks. The results showed that incorporating U. lactuca in piglet diets did not influence most of the meat quality traits (P > 0.05). However, the incorporation of U. lactuca with the commercial carbohydrase (UL + R) increased the amount of the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) in their meat (P = 0.011) compared with the control, by 54%. In addition, meat from piglets fed seaweed diets showed a nearly two-fold increase in iodine contents (P < 0.001). Meat tenderness, juiciness and overall acceptability of piglets fed the control diet and the UL diet were lower than those fed the diets containing seaweed and carbohydrases (P < 0.001). Overall, the findings indicate that 7% U. lactuca in the diets of weaned piglets had no major detrimental effects on meat quality and their carbohydrase supplementation has the potential to improve meat sensory traits.

Abstract
In the world, migraine is one of the most common causes of disability in adults. To date, there is no a single cause for this disorder, but rather a set of physio-pathogenic triggers in combination with a genetic predisposition. Among the factors related to migraine onset, a crucial role seems to be played by gut dysbiosis. In fact, it has been demonstrated how the intestine is able to modulate the central nervous system activities, through the gut-brain axis, and how gut dysbiosis can influence neurological pathologies, including migraine attacks. In this context, in addition to conventional pharmacological treatments for migraine, attention has been paid to an adjuvant therapeutic strategy based on different nutritional approaches and lifestyle changes able to positively modulate the gut microbiota composition. In fact, the restoration of the balance between the different gut bacterial species, the reconstruction of the gut barrier integrity, and the control of the release of gut-derived inflammatory neuropeptides, obtained through specific nutritional patterns and lifestyle changes, represent a possible beneficial additive therapy for many migraine subtypes. Herein, this review explores the bi-directional correlation between migraine and the main chronic non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, obesity, cancer, and chronic kidney diseases, whose link is represented by gut dysbiosis.

Abstract
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the main site for protein synthesis, folding, and secretion, and accumulation of the unfolded/misfolded proteins in the ER may induce ER stress. ER stress is an important participant in various intracellular signaling pathways. Prolonged- or high-intensity ER stress may induce cell apoptosis. Osteoporosis, characterized by imbalanced bone remodeling, is a global disease caused by many factors, such as ER stress. ER stress stimulates osteoblast apoptosis, increases bone loss, and promotes osteoporosis development. Many factors, such as the drug's adverse effects, metabolic disorders, calcium ion imbalance, bad habits, and aging, have been reported to activate ER stress, resulting in the pathological development of osteoporosis. Increasing evidence shows that ER stress regulates osteogenic differentiation, osteoblast activity, and osteoclast formation and function. Various therapeutic agents have been developed to counteract ER stress and thereby suppress osteoporosis development. Thus, inhibition of ER stress has become a potential target for the therapeutic management of osteoporosis. However, the in-depth understanding of ER stress in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis still needs more effort.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to determine changes in the mineral composition of the bones of rats with chemically induced mammary gland cancer and to attempt to establish whether a specific diet modification involving the inclusion of zinc ions in two forms-nano and micro-will affect the mineral composition of the bones. METHODS Female Sprague-Dawley rats were used for the research. The animals were randomly assigned to three experimental groups. All animals were fed a standard diet (Labofeed H), and selected groups additionally received zinc nanoparticles or microparticles in the amount of 4.6 mg/mL. To induce mammary cancer, the animals were given 7,12-dimethyl-1,2-benz[a]anthracene. The content of Ag, As, B, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Tl, U, and V was determined using ICP-MS, while that of Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, and Zn was determined using FAAS. RESULTS The use of a diet enriched with zinc nano- or microparticles significantly influenced the content of the elements tested. In the bones of rats fed a diet with zinc nanoparticles, changes were found in the content of Ca, Mg, Zn, Cd, U, V, and Tl, while in the case of the diet supplemented with zinc microparticles, there were differences in six elements-Ca, Mg, B, Cd, Ag, and Pb-compared to animals receiving an unsupplemented diet. CONCLUSIONS The content of elements in the bone tissue of rats in the experimental model indicates disturbances of mineral metabolism in the tissue at an early stage of mammary cancer.

Abstract
Calcium (Ca) is a macronutrient necessary for the proper functioning of an organism. In the case of insufficient consumption with diet, its deficiencies can be supplemented with food supplements (FS). These supplements are used, for example, as an auxiliary in the prevention of osteoporosis, allergies, hair loss or nail brittleness. The purpose of the study was to assess the compliance of Ca content with the manufacturers' declaration. The material consisted of 108 FS. Ca content was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). It was shown that 1.9% of the samples were characterized by a Ca content that was too low in comparison to the manufacturer's declaration, while a content that was relatively too high was found in 54.6% of FS. The quality of FS should be monitored to ensure patient safety.

Abstract
Beverages are an integral part of human nutrition, yet little is known about their contribution to daily intakes of minerals and trace elements in German consumers. Using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, we determined the concentration of five minerals and six trace elements in beverage samples (n = 990, assigned to different beverage groups) collected throughout Germany. For a calculation of their relative contribution to the mineral supply, available beverage consumption data was combined with our quantitative analysis to calculate the average contribution of beverage groups to meet the respective dietary reference values currently used in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (D-A-CH region). Based on their presence in beverages and their consumption, the top three minerals are phosphorous, calcium and magnesium, and they, therefore, may reasonably contribute to the reference values. Among the trace elements, beverages mostly contributed to the manganese supply, whereas at the same time, concentrations of iron, cobalt and copper were low across all tested groups. Our study provides an overview of the assumed mineral and trace element intake via beverages in Germany and may, thus, serve as a foundation for a mineral and trace element database of beverages that needs to be expanded in the future.

Abstract
Diet quality during reproduction is crucial to maternal and infant health. However, the association between dietary diversity and bone health of pregnant women remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the dietary quality of Chinese urban gravidas using the dietary diversity score (DDS), and to explore the relationship of the DDS with micronutrient adequacy and bone health. In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from 775 pregnant women aged 18 years or older in urban China. Dietary diversity was assessed using the Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) indicator. A 24-h dietary recall was used to collect diet data and to calculate the MDD-W and the nutrient intake. Bone health was measured using quantitative ultrasound and assessed by the speed of sound (SOS). Pearson's correlation coefficients between the DDS and the nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) were calculated. A multivariable linear regression model was used to estimate the effect size of the DDS on the SOS. The mean DDS was 6.61 ± 1.53 points and 91.0% of participants reported the consumption of five or more food groups. Women in the diverse diet subgroup (DDS ≥ 7 points) were more likely to consume all kinds of food except starchy staples and had higher NARs. Pearson's correlation coefficients between the DDS and the NAR ranged from 0.161 to 0.484. For participants in the second trimester, those with a diverse diet had a higher SOS. A multivariable linear regression analysis showed that the DDS was positively and significantly associated with the SOS (β = 17.18, 95% CI = 5.97-28.39, p = 0.003), but this was not the case for women in the first and third trimesters. Urban Chinese women had good dietary diversity during pregnancy. A higher dietary diversity was associated with a higher NAR. From the point of view of bone, a diverse diet was positively correlated with better bone status, suggesting the importance of improving diet diversity for pregnant women, especially from mid-pregnancy.

Abstract
Corticosteroids, oral or transtympanic, remain the mainstay for inner ear diseases characterized by hearing fluctuation or sudden changes in hearing, including sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), Meniere's disease (MD), and autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED). Despite their use across these diseases, the rate of complete recovery remains low, and results across the literature demonstrates significant heterogeneity with respect to the effect of corticosteroids, suggesting a need to identify more efficacious treatment options. Previously, our group has cross-referenced steroid-responsive genes in the cochlea with published single-cell and single-nucleus transcriptome datasets to demonstrate that steroid-responsive differentially regulated genes are expressed in spiral ganglion neurons (SGN) and stria vascularis (SV) cell types. These differentially regulated genes represent potential druggable gene targets. We utilized multiple gene target databases (DrugBank, Pharos, and LINCS) to identify orally administered, FDA approved medications that potentially target these genes. We identified 42 candidate drugs that have been shown to interact with these genes, with an emphasis on safety profile, and tolerability. This study utilizes multiple databases to identify drugs that can target a number of druggable genes in otologic disorders that are commonly treated with steroids, providing a basis for establishing novel repurposing treatment trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tiger bone, which had been one of the most famous traditional Chinese medicine for 2000 years, was originate from the skeleton of Panthera tigris L., and had the actions of anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immune-regulatory and promoting healing of bone fracture, and was used for the treatment of osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Jin-Tian-Ge (JTG), the artificial tiger bone powder, were prepared from skeletons of several farmed animals to substitute the natural tiger bone, and has been used for the treatment of osteoporosis in clinical practice. However, the characteristic and mechanism of action of JTG for the therapy of osteoporosis need to be further evidenced by using modern pharmacological methods. The aim of this work is to investigate the bone-protective effects of JTG, and explore the possible underlying mechanism. METHODS Ovariectomy (OVX) rats were orally administrated JTG or estradiol valerate (EV) for 12 weeks. We investigated the pharmacodynamic effects of JTG on anti-bone loss in OVX rats, and also investigated the role of JTG in promoting osteogenesis and inhibiting osteoclast differentiation. RESULTS JTG increased the bone mineral density (BMD), improved the bone microarchitecture and biomechanical properties in ovariectomized rast, whereas reversed the bone high turnover in OVX rats as evidenced by serum biochemical markers in OVX rats. JTG increased osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs in vitro, and up-regulated the expression of the key proteins of BMP and Wnt/β-catenin pathways. JTG also inhibited the osteoclastogenesis of BMM as evidenced by the alteration of the TRAP activity, F-actin construction and the expression of nuclear factor of activated T-cells cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1), c-Fos, Cathepsin K (Ctsk) and matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9) of OCs induced with RANKL and LPS, reduced the expression and phosphorylation of NF-κB in OCs. CONCLUSIONS JTG prevented bone loss in OVX rats and increased osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs through regulation of the BMP and Wnt/β-catenin pathway, inhibited osteoclastogenesis by suppressing the NF-κB pathway, suggesting that JTG had the potentials for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis by modulating formation and differentiation of osteoblast and osteoclast.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutritional status affects the health of the public and is one of the key factors influencing social-economic development. To date, little research on the nutritional status of the Macao university student population has been conducted. OBJECTIVES To identify and evaluate the dietary pattern and the nutritional intake among Macao university students. METHODS The Macao students were selected by the stratified cluster random sampling method. A semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to investigate food consumption. Data were analyzed through a t-test and factor analysis by using SPSS Version 24.0. RESULTS A total of 1230 questionnaires were distributed. From the respondents, 1067 (86.7%) were valid. In general, we identified three major dietary patterns in this population: (1) fruit and vegetable dietary pattern, characterized by abundant consumption of fruits and vegetables; (2) grain and high fat dietary pattern, characterized as high intakes of grains and animal foods; (3) high sugar dietary pattern, characterized by a large quantity of daily sugary drinks. The average daily intake of vitamin A, thiamine, calcium, and iodine were significantly lower than the Chinese Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) in the subjects. Conclusions: The dietary pattern of Macao students is similar to that of other Asians. Surprisingly, the daily intake of vitamin A, thiamine, calcium, and iodine by Macao university students is significantly lower than the Chinese RNI.

Abstract
Due to the abuse of antibiotics and the emergence of multidrug resistant microorganisms, medical devices, and related biomaterials are at high risk of microbial infection during use, placing a heavy burden on patients and healthcare systems. Metal-phenolic networks (MPNs), an emerging organic-inorganic hybrid network system developed gradually in recent years, have exhibited excellent multifunctional properties such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties by making use of the coordination between phenolic ligands and metal ions. Further, MPNs have received widespread attention in antimicrobial infections due to their facile synthesis process, excellent biocompatibility, and excellent antimicrobial properties brought about by polyphenols and metal ions. In this review, different categories of biomaterials based on MPNs (nanoparticles, coatings, capsules, hydrogels) and their fabrication strategies are summarized, and recent research advances in their antimicrobial applications in biomedical fields (e.g., skin repair, bone regeneration, medical devices, etc.) are highlighted.

Abstract
Osteoporosis has been defined as the silent disease of the 21st century, becoming a public health risk due to its severity, chronicity and progression and affecting mainly postmenopausal women and older adults. Osteoporosis is characterized by an imbalance between bone resorption and bone production. It is diagnosed through different methods such as bone densitometry and dual X-rays. The treatment of this pathology focuses on different aspects. On the one hand, pharmacological treatments are characterized by the use of anti-resorptive drugs, as well as emerging regenerative medicine treatments such as cell therapies and the use of bioactive hydrogels. On the other hand, non-pharmacological treatments are associated with lifestyle habits that should be incorporated, such as physical activity, diet and the cessation of harmful habits such as a high consumption of alcohol or smoking. This review seeks to provide an overview of the theoretical basis in relation to bone biology, the existing methods for diagnosis and the treatments of osteoporosis, including the development of new strategies.

Abstract
Nanoparticles (NPs) are increasingly used in a wide variety of applications and products; however, NPs may affect stress response pathways and interact with proteins in biological systems. This review article will provide an overview of the beneficial and detrimental effects of NPs on stress response pathways with a focus on NP-protein interactions. Depending upon the particular NP, experimental model system, and dose and exposure conditions, the introduction of NPs may have either positive or negative effects. Cellular processes such as the development of oxidative stress, the initiation of the inflammatory response, mitochondrial function, detoxification, and alterations to signaling pathways are all affected by the introduction of NPs. In terms of tissue-specific effects, the local microenvironment can have a profound effect on whether an NP is beneficial or harmful to cells. Interactions of NPs with metal-binding proteins (zinc, copper, iron and calcium) affect both their structure and function. This review will provide insights into the current knowledge of protein-based nanotoxicology and closely examines the targets of specific NPs.

Abstract
In recent years, plant-based diets have experienced increasing popularity. However, plant-based diets may not always ensure an adequate supply of micronutrients, in particular calcium. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of calcium intake in vegan and vegetarian diets as compared to omnivorous diets. We searched PubMed and Web of Science and identified 2,009 potentially relevant articles. Mean calcium intake values were pooled and standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed.We analyzed 74 studies, including 7,356 vegan, 51,940 vegetarian, and 107,581 omnivorous participants. Of these, dietary calcium intake was examined in 23 studies of vegans, 60 studies of vegetarians and 74 studies of omnivores. Vegans showed a substantially lower calcium intake than vegetarians (SMD = -0.57; 95%CI = -0.83 to -0.32; p = <0.0001) and omnivores (SMD = -0.70; 95%CI = -0.95 to -0.59; p < 0.0001), whereas no statistically significant difference in calcium intake was noted between vegetarians and omnivores (SMD = 0.07; 95%CI = -0.04 to 0.19; p = 0.1976). In conclusion, vegans show a lower calcium intake than vegetarians and omnivores. This finding emphasizes the need for vegans to monitor their calcium status.

Abstract
Calcium absorption and secretion can occur along the length of the small and large intestine. To date, the focus of research into intestinal calcium absorption has been the small intestine, the site contributing the majority of intestinal calcium absorption. However, evidence that the colon contributes as much as 10% of enteral calcium transport has been available for decades. Transcellular calcium absorption and bidirectional paracellular calcium flux contributing to either net absorption or secretion have been observed in the colon, depending on the physiological state. Moreover, the calcium transport pathways contributing to colonic absorption or secretion are regulated by a variety of hormones, including calcitriol, plasma calcium and dietary factors, including prebiotics. Herein we review historical and recent research highlighting the role of colonic calcium transport in overall maintenance of calcium balance, and suggest these data are consistent with the colon being a site of significant regulated transepithelial calcium transport.

Abstract
Implant removal is unnecessary for biodegradable magnesium (Mg)-based implants and, therefore, the related risk for implant-induced fractures is limited. Aging, on the other hand, is associated with low bone-turnover and decreased bone mass and density, and thus increased fracture risk. Osteoporosis is accompanied by Mg deficiency, therefore, we hypothesized that Mg-based implants may support bone formation by Mg2+ ion release in an ovariectomy-induced osteoporotic rat model. Hence, we investigated osseointegration and implant degradation of a low-alloyed, degrading Mg-Zn-Ca implant (ZX00) in ovariectomy-induced osteoporotic (Osteo), old healthy (OH), and juvenile healthy (JH) groups of female Sprague Dawley rats via in vivo micro-computed tomography (µCT). For the Osteo rats, we demonstrate diminished trabecular bone already after 8 weeks upon ovariectomy and significantly enhanced implant volume loss, with correspondingly pronounced gas formation, compared to the OH and JH groups. Sclerotic rim development was observed in about half of the osteoporotic rats, suggesting a prevention from foreign-body and osteonecrosis development. Synchrotron radiation-based µCT confirmed lower bone volume fractions in the Osteo group compared to the OH and JH groups. Qualitative histological analysis additionally visualized the enhanced implant degradation in the Osteo group. To date, ZX00 provides an interesting implant material for young and older healthy patients, but it may not be of advantage in pharmacologically untreated osteoporotic conditions. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Magnesium-based implants are promising candidates for treatment of osteoporotic fractures because of their biodegradable, biomechanical, anti-bacterial and bone regenerative properties. Here we investigate magnesium‒zinc‒calcium implant materials in a rat model with ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis (Osteo group) and compare the related osseointegration and implant degradation with the results obtained for old healthy (OH) and juvenile healthy (JH) rats. The work applied an appropriate disease model for osteoporosis and focused in particular on long-term implant degradation for different bone conditions. Enhanced implant degradation and sclerotic rim formation was observed in osteoporotic rats, which illustrates that the setting of different bone models generates significantly modified clinical outcome. It further illustrated that these differences must be taken into account in future biodegradable implant development.

Abstract
Multi-elemental analysis is widely used to identify the geographical origins of plants. The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of combining chemometrics with multi-element analysis for classification of Codonopsis Radix from different producing regions of Gansu province (China). A total of 117 Codonopsis Radix samples from 7 counties of Gansu province were collected. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for the determination of 28 elements (39 K, 24 Mg, 44Ca, 27Al, 137Ba, 57Fe, 23Na, 88Sr, 55Mn, 66Zn, 65Cu, 85Rb, 61Ni, 53Cr, 51 V, 7Li, 208Pb, 59Co, 75As, 133Cs, 71 Ga, 77Se, 205Tl, 114Cd, 238U, 107Ag, 4Be and 202Hg). Among macro elements, 39 K showed the highest level, whereas 23Na was found to have the lowest content value. Micro elements showed the concentrations order of: 88Sr > 55Mn > 66Zn > 85Rb > 65Cu. Among trace elements, 53Cr and 61Ni showed higher content and 4Be was not detected in all samples. Intra-regions differentiation was performed by principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA) and supervised learning algorithms such as linear discriminant analysis (LDA), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), support vector machines (SVM), and random forests (RF). Among them, the RF model performed the best with an accuracy rate of 78.79%. Multi-elemental analysis combined with RF was a reliable method to identify the origins of Codonopsis Radix in Gansu province.

Abstract
It is anticipated that calcium-chelating peptides may serve to enhance the absorption of calcium. This research examined defatted lemon basil seeds (DLBS) which had been treated with Alcalase under optimized parameters for the degree of hydrolysis for proteolysis, discovering that the activity for calcium-binding in a competitive condition with phosphate ion was 60.39 ± 1.545%. The purification of the hydrolysates was performed via ultrafiltration along with reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). Determination of the purified peptide amino acid sequence was confirmed for both peptides and reported as Ala-Phe-Asn-Arg-Ala-Lys-Ser-Lys-Ala-Leu-Asn-Glu-Asn (AFNRAKSKALNEN; Basil-1), and Tyr-Asp-Ser-Ser-Gly-Gly-Pro-Thr-Pro-Trp-Leu-Ser-Pro-Tyr (YDSSGGPTPWLSPY; Basil-2). The respective activities for calcium-binding were 38.62 ± 1.33%, and 42.19 ± 2.27%. Fluorescence spectroscopy, and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were employed in order to assess the chelating mechanism between calcium and the peptides. It was found that the calcium ions took place through the activity of the amino nitrogen atoms and the oxygen atoms on the carboxyl group. Moreover, both of these peptides served to improve calcium transport and absorption in Caco-2 cell monolayers, depending on the concentration involved. It was revealed that the peptide-calcium complexes offered an increased calcium absorption percentage when compared to free calcium at similar concentrations. It might be concluded that the peptide within the peptide-calcium complex can promote calcium absorption through both active and passive transport pathways by increasing calcium concentration and promoting cell membrane interaction. Accordingly, DLBS protein can be considered a strong potential source of protein which can be used to produce calcium-binding peptides and might therefore play a role in the production of nutraceutical foods as a bioactive ingredient.

Abstract
This study aimed to transform the input of a large dataset into the output of interpretable information. Hence, multivariate statistical methods were carried out to analyze physicochemical parameters in 34 rivers during a 17-year period (1997-2014). Cluster analysis divided the study area into spatially different riverine water quality sub-regions described in ascending order of water quality as severely polluted (SP), highly polluted (HP), polluted (P), moderately polluted (MP), lightly polluted (LP), and not polluted (NP). By diagnosing threats and identifying fragile zones, water contamination sources responsible for impaired water quality in the study area recognized as natural pollutants in LP, municipal wastes in P, discharge of industrial effluents in MP, natural geochemical formations in SP and HP, and superficial flows of agricultural lands in SP, HP, and MP. The dominant water type in each zone was classified into Na-Cl, Na-Cl, Na-Mg-Ca-Cl-SO4, Na-Ca-Mg-Cl-SO4, Na-Ca-Cl, and Ca-Mg-HCO3-SO4 groups for SP, HP, P, MP, LP, and NP, respectively. To explore aesthetic aspects of drinking water application, hazard quotient (HQ) was applied for children and adults in terms of ingestion and dermal exposure. Overall health risk assessment revealed the order of impacts of the secondary water quality parameters as Cl- > Na+ > total dissolved solids (TDS) > Ca2+ > SO42- > Mg2+. Furthermore, hazard index (HI) ranged from 0.011 to 31.439 and 0.010 to 30.122 for children and adults, respectively, indicating a potential health risk regarding chloride throughout the whole region excluding NP. To identify significant agents in water quality, principal component analysis extracted 3 varifactors (VFs), with the eigenvalues of 4.74, 1.19, and 0.85, respectively, explained about 83% of the variance. The most important parameters in the first factor were TDS, electrical conductivity, SAR, TH, Na+, Cl-, and SO42- accounting for 58% of the total variance. The most influenced parameters in the second and third factors were pH and HCO3-, respectively, with variance coverage of 26%. These factors indicated that the hydrochemical characteristics of the water originated by natural interactions (existing salt domes, evaporation, weathering, and soil erosion) and anthropogenic activities (fertilizer-rich flows of agro-fields and domestic/industrial disposals), which must be minimized in rivers to supply the population with hygienic water.

Abstract
Improvement of dietary and ecological biodiversity, namely by exploring autochthonous varieties, is a key point to the construction of a more sustainable food system and planetary health. However, the environmental sustainability continues to face huge challenges, reflecting the importance of achieving a better understanding about the functional role of biodiversity in ecosystems. Thus, the main objective of this research is to contribute to the sustainable valorization of Sambucus nigra L. berries through a comprehensive approach to evaluate the effects of elderberry's cultivar, harvest year, and plantation field on the physicochemical berry composition. Moreover, the nutritional value of elderberry juice and respective dried pomace was determined. This complementary information is of huge utility for the rational and, as much as possible, integral use of elderberries. The harvest year, followed by field and the interaction of harvest × field, accounted for the highest impact on the berry's physicochemical parameters, indicating the importance of the combined impact of the macro- and mesoclimate conditions on plant metabolism. Elderberry juice and dried pomace are a good source of carbohydrates (ca. 12 and 82%, respectively) and have low amounts of fat (≤2.5%), making them low-energy foods. Dried pomace may also represent a potential alternative source of vegetal protein (ca. 6%).

Abstract
Type 1 diabetes (T1D)-induced osteoporosis is characterized by decreased bone mineral density, bone quality, rate of bone healing, bone formation, and increased bone resorption. Patients with T1D have a 2-7-fold higher risk of osteoporotic fracture. The mechanisms leading to increased risk of osteoporotic fracture in T1D include insulin deficiency, hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, lower insulin-like growth factor-1, hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress, and inflammation. In addition, a higher probability of falling, kidney dysfunction, weakened vision, and neuropathy indirectly increase the risk of osteoporotic fracture in T1D patients. Decreased nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability contributes to the pathophysiology of T1D-induced osteoporotic fracture. This review discusses the role of NO in osteoblast-mediated bone formation and osteoclast-mediated bone resorption in T1D. In addition, the mechanisms involved in reduced NO bioavailability and activity in type 1 diabetic bones as well as NO-based therapy for T1D-induced osteoporosis are summarized. Available data indicates that lower NO bioavailability in diabetic bones is due to disruption of phosphatidylinositol 3‑kinase/protein kinase B/endothelial NO synthases and NO/cyclic guanosine monophosphate/protein kinase G signaling pathways. Thus, NO bioavailability may be boosted directly or indirectly by NO donors. As NO donors with NO-like effects in the bone, inorganic nitrate and nitrite can potentially be used as novel therapeutic agents for T1D-induced osteoporosis. Inorganic nitrites and nitrates can decrease the risk for osteoporotic fracture probably directly by decreasing osteoclast activity, decreasing fat accumulation in the marrow cavity, increasing osteoblast activity, and increasing bone perfusion or indirectly, by improving hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and reducing body weight.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 5-Hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) is an epigenetic DNA modification that is highly abundant in central nervous system. It has been reported that DNA 5hmC dysregulation play a critical role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Changes in 5hmC signatures can be detected in circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA), which has shown potential as a non-invasive liquid biopsy material. OBJECTIVE However, the genome-wide profiling of 5hmC in cfDNA and its potential for the diagnosis of AD has not been reported to date. METHODS We carried out a case-control study and used a genome-wide chemical capture followed by high-throughput sequencing to detect the genome-wide profiles of 5hmC in human cfDNA and identified differentially hydroxymethylated regions (DhMRs) in late-onset AD patients and the control. RESULTS We discovered significant differences of 5hmC enrichment in gene bodies which were linked to multiple AD pathogenesis-associated signaling pathways in AD patients compared with cognitively normal controls, indicating they can be well distinguished from normal controls by DhMRs in cfDNA. Specially, we identified 7 distinct genes (RABEP1, CPNE4, DNAJC15, REEP3, ROR1, CAMK1D, and RBFOX1) with predicting diagnostic potential based on their significant correlations with MMSE and MoCA scores of subjects. CONCLUSION The present results suggest that 5hmC markers derived from plasma cfDNA can served as an effective, minimally invasive biomarkers for clinical auxiliary diagnosis of late-onset AD.

Abstract
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a chronic population health hazard systemic metabolic disease caused by excessive bone resorption and reduced bone formation. The activity between osteoblast and osteoclast, with their mutual effects, influence the procedure of normal bone remodeling. Over-activated osteoclast differentiation and function play a crucial role in excessive bone resorption. Hence, therapy strategies targeting osteoclast activity may promote the bone mass preservation and delay the osteoporosis process. Natural compound (anethole) is emerging as potential therapeutics for various metabolic diseases. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential effects of anethole on RANKL-induced osteoclast formation and function in vitro and in vivo. Here, in vitro TRAP staining assay was performed to investigate the inhibitory effect of anethole on osteoclast differentiation. Bone pits resorption assay revealed that osteoclast-mediated bone resorption was inhibited by anethole. At mRNA and protein levels, anethole significantly reduced the expression of osteoclast-specific genes expression in a concentration- or time-dependent manner, including NFATc1, MMP-9, DC-STAMP, c-F, TRAP, CTR, Cathepsin K, and V-ATPase d2. Furthermore, intracellular signaling transduction assay indicated that anethole inhibited osteoclast formation via blocking ERK and AKT signaling. GSK3β, the downstream signal of AKT, is simultaneously suppressed with anethole treatment. Based on ovariectomized (OVX) mice model, micro-CT and histological staining results suggested that anethole prevented estrogen deficiency-induced bone mass loss and increased osteoclast activity in vivo. In conclusion, our results show significant indications that anethole exhibits an osteoprotective effect and may be potential for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is characterized by bone loss. The present study aims to investigate the effects of bovine colostrum (BC) on bone metabolism using ovariectomized (OVX) and orchidectomized (ORX) rat models. Twenty-seven-week-old Wistar Han rats were randomly assigned as: (1) placebo control, (2) BC supplementation dose 1 (BC1: 0.5 g/day/OVX, 1 g/day/ORX), (3) BC supplementation dose 2 (BC2: 1 g/day/OVX, 1.5 g/day/ORX) and (4) BC supplementation dose 3 (BC3: 1.5 g/day/OVX, 2 g/day/ORX). Bone microarchitecture, strength, gene expression of VEGFA, FGF2, RANKL, RANK and OPG, and bone resorption/formation markers were assessed after four months of BC supplementation. Compared to the placebo, OVX rats in the BC1 group exhibited significantly higher cortical bone mineral content and trabecular bone mineral content (p < 0.01), while OVX rats in the BC3 group showed significantly higher trabecular bone mineral content (p < 0.05). ORX rats receiving BC dose 2 demonstrated significantly higher levels of trabecular bone mineral content (p < 0.05). Serum osteocalcin in the ORX was pointedly higher in all BC supplementation groups than the placebo (BC1: p < 0.05; BC2, BC3: p < 0.001). Higher doses of BC induced significantly higher relative mRNA expression of OPG, VEGFA, FGF2 and RANKL (p < 0.05). BC supplementation improves bone metabolism of OVX and ORX rats, which might be associated with the activation of the VEGFA, FGF2 and RANKL/RANK/OPG pathways.

Abstract
Peripheral nerves are highly susceptible to injuries induced from everyday activities such as falling or work and sport accidents as well as more severe incidents such as car and motorcycle accidents. Many efforts have been made to improve nerve regeneration, but a satisfactory outcome is still unachieved, highlighting the need for easy to apply supportive strategies for stimulating nerve growth and functional recovery. Recent focus has been made on the effect of the consumed diet and its relation to healthy and well-functioning body systems. Normally, a balanced, healthy daily diet should provide our body with all the needed nutritional elements for maintaining correct function. The health of the central and peripheral nervous system is largely dependent on balanced nutrients supply. While already addressed in many reviews with different focus, we comprehensively review here the possible role of different nutrients in maintaining a healthy peripheral nervous system and their possible role in supporting the process of peripheral nerve regeneration. In fact, many dietary supplements have already demonstrated an important role in peripheral nerve development and regeneration; thus, a tailored dietary plan supplied to a patient following nerve injury could play a non-negotiable role in accelerating and promoting the process of nerve regeneration.

Abstract
The present demographic changes toward an aging society caused a rise in the number of senior citizens and the incidence and burden of age-related diseases (such as cardiovascular diseases [CVD], cancer, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [NAFLD], diabetes mellitus, and dementia), of which nearly half is attributable to the population ≥60 years of age. Deficiencies in individual nutrients have been associated with increased risks for age-related diseases and high intakes and/or blood concentrations with risk reduction. Nutrition in general and the dietary intake of essential and nonessential biofactors is a major determinant of human health, the risk to develop age-related diseases, and ultimately of mortality in the older population. These biofactors can be a cost-effective strategy to prevent or, in some cases, even treat age-related diseases. Examples reviewed herein include omega-3 fatty acids and dietary fiber for the prevention of CVD, α-tocopherol (vitamin E) for the treatment of biopsy-proven nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, vitamin D for the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, thiamine and α-lipoic acid for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy, and the role of folate in cancer epigenetics. This list of potentially helpful biofactors in the prevention and treatment of age-related diseases, however, is not exhaustive and many more examples exist. Furthermore, since there is currently no generally accepted definition of the term biofactors, we here propose a definition that, when adopted by scientists, will enable a harmonization and consistent use of the term in the scientific literature.

Abstract
Diabetoporosis, diabetic-related decreased bone quality and quantity, is one of the leading causes of osteoporotic fractures in subjects with type 2 diabetes (T2D). This is associated with lower trabecular and cortical bone quality, lower bone turnover rates, lower rates of bone healing, and abnormal posttranslational modifications of collagen. Decreased nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability has been reported within the bones of T2D patients and can be considered as one of the primary mechanisms by which diabetoporosis is manifested. NO donors increase trabecular and cortical bone quality, increase the rate of bone formation, accelerate the bone healing process, delay osteoporosis, and decrease osteoporotic fractures in T2D patients, suggesting the potential therapeutic implication of NO-based interventions. NO is produced in the osteoblast and osteoclast cells by three isoforms of NO synthase (NOS) enzymes. In this review, the roles of NO in bone remodeling in the normal and diabetic states are discussed. Also, the favorable effects of low physiological levels of NO produced by endothelial NOS (eNOS) versus detrimental effects of high pathological levels of NO produced by inducible NOS (iNOS) in diabetoporosis are summarized. Available data indicates decreased bone NO bioavailability in T2D and decreased expression of eNOS, and increased expression and activity of iNOS. NO donors can be considered novel therapeutic agents in diabetoporosis.

Abstract
Motivated by the use of chitosan (Ch), and cellulose acetate (AC) as organic matrices in several therapeutic drugs, a theoretical study has been elaborated through the density functional theory method (DFT) to investigate the interaction mechanism between two essential ions for the human body Ca2+, K+ and two organic matrices chitosan (Ch), and cellulose acetate (AC). Many physical and chemical aspects have been carried out after the achievement of structural optimization. This involves structural parameters, molecular electrostatic potential (MEPs), interaction energy, reactivity indexes, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs), quantum theory atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis, and non-covalent interaction (NCI) analysis. The results of FMOs, MEPs, and reactivity index studies have revealed that the site of interaction can be predicted. The calculation of electron interaction energies shows that those ions interact with the matrix of AC and Ch. Concretely, the Ca2+ ion interacted efficiently with the AC matrix. The structural analysis results show that the interaction of Ch and ions appear spontaneously (ΔG < 0) while the interaction of AC and ions (ΔG >0) requires more energy to occur. Finally, the QTAIM analysis data indicates that the interactions of AC-ions and Ch-ions are non-covalent presenting an electrostatic character.

Abstract
Among the pertinent differentials for hypercalcemia, milk-alkali syndrome remains a diagnosis of exclusion following a thorough workup of other severe causes. However, several key signs may increase a clinician's index of suspicion for possible milk-alkali syndrome, including a prolonged history of antacid ingestion. Milk-alkali syndrome commonly presents with a classic triad: hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, and acute kidney injury. The diagnostic workup should include evaluation of both serum and urine calcium levels, serum phosphate levels, and other hormones (parathyroid hormone, vitamin D). In the case of a confirmed diagnosis of milk-alkali syndrome, rapid correction of calcium levels is of utmost importance. We present the case and workup of an individual presenting to the emergency room with hypercalcemia, acute kidney injury, and several key systemic symptoms. Given a significant history of antacid overuse, and a thorough diagnostic workup, a diagnosis of milk-alkali syndrome was made and the patient was treated accordingly, making a full recovery. We review this rare case and important clinical pearls regarding milk-alkali syndrome.

Abstract
At present, diseases of bones and joints stand third after cardiovascular and oncological pathologies which demands the necessity of searching for new etiological factors and pathogenetical mechanisms of these illnesses. The accumulating data show the association between the impairment of bone tissue development and regeneration and endocrine disruptor impact. Endocrine disruptors are chemical substances, mainly of anthropogenic origin, capable of affecting endocrine system functioning and interfering with organ morphogenesis and physiological functions. The development and regeneration of bone tissues have a complex hormonal regulation and therefore bone tissue cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts can be considered as potential targets for endocrine disruptors. Endocrine disruptors have been established to be able to impair calcium metabolism which also contributes to the development of musculoskeletal system pathology. Data on histogenesis of bone tissue and regeneration, calcium metabolism as well as on hormonal regulation of bone growth and remodeling processes are presented in this work. Recent information on the effect of the main endocrine disruptor classes (diethylstilbestrol, organochlorine pesticides, alkylphenols, bisphenol A, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, and phthalic acid esters) on the development and remodeling of bone tissues and calcium metabolism has been summarized. The established physiological and molecular mechanisms of their action have been also considered.

Abstract
PURPOSE The prognostic value of serum calcium levels in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of serum calcium levels in patients with NPC. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 2094 patients diagnosed with NPC between April 2009 and September 2012 were enrolled in this retrospective analysis. The median follow-up time was 96.3 months (range: 4.1-120.0 months). Univariate and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to identify significant and independent prognostic predictors of overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), and relapse-free survival (RFS). RESULTS Overall, low serum calcium levels were detected in 1109/2094 (53.00%) patients and tended to be more frequently detected in older (P<0.001) and female (P=0.001) patients. Patients with low serum calcium levels had poorer OS (P=0.011), DFS (P=0.012) and DMFS (P=0.004) than those with high serum calcium levels, but serum calcium levels had no significant effect on RFS (P=0.376). In univariate and multivariable analyses, low serum calcium levels were a statistically significant and independent prognostic factor for OS, DFS, and DMFS but had no prognostic value for RFS. CONCLUSION Serum calcium levels can serve as a prognostic predictor and guide more individualized treatment for NPC patients.
