Abstract
Background Evidence suggests that a combination of biological and social factors influence risk of dementia differently for women and men. In healthy older women, several factors may contribute to changes in cognition. Objective Describe the characteristics associated with variation in cognition in a sample of cognitively healthy older Panamanian women. Methods The study includes cross-sectional analyses of cognitive domains at baseline (n = 357) and 17-month (SD = 2.0) follow-up (n = 200) for women aged 60 years and older enrolled in the Panama Aging Research Initiative-Health Disparities (PARI-HD) study. Instruments included clinical questionnaires, physiological measures, and a neuropsychological test battery assessing global cognition and seven cognitive domains. Multiple regression analyses examined the associations between demographic and clinical characteristics and cognition at baseline. Repeated measures analyses were used to investigate changes in cognition from baseline to follow-up. Results On average, participants were 68.6 years of age (SD = 5.9) with 16.1 years of education (SD = 4.7). Age, income, and education showed robust associations with baseline cognition. Subjective cognitive impairment was associated with lower performance in global cognition, verbal learning, and memory domains. Only performance in the attention domain decreased at follow-up, and subjective health state and depressive symptoms significantly predicted the change in attention. Discussion Our study findings contribute to the investigation of cognitive health in older Hispanic women and to the understanding of sociodemographic and health-related factors associated with cognitive decline and the progression to cognitive impairment and dementia.

Abstract
Background This study focuses on how elements of depression correlate with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in older adults and the diagnostic efficacy of combining these components with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). The study also investigated the connection between individual depression components and overall cognitive function, as measured by the total score (TS) of the consortium to establish a registry for Alzheimer's disease (AD) assessment battery. Methods The study included 196 nondemented adults aged 65 to 90 years at a university hospital and community. Comprehensive clinical assessments including the 30-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) to measure components of depressive symptoms, TS, and blood nutritional biomarkers. Results Our stepwise logistic regression analysis highlighted the 'helplessness item' (odds ratio = 4.531, 95% CI = 2.218 to 9.258, p < 0.001) as a significant predictor for MCI diagnosis. Further, models incorporating 'helplessness item + MMSE' demonstrated markedly enhanced accuracy in diagnosing MCI, surpassing the performance of the MMSE used independently. Notably, the group characterized by helplessness showed a significant reduction in TS (B = -5.300, SE = 1.899, β = -0.162, p = 0.006), with this trend being particularly pronounced in individuals exhibiting lower levels of physical activity. Interestingly, this correlation did not manifest in participants with higher physical activity levels. Conclusion Our findings suggest that helplessness is highly effective in diagnosing MCI and is linked to a decrease in cognitive function. Therefore, when addressing MCI and AD-related cognitive decline, clinicians should consider helplessness.

Abstract
Memory deficits are observed across psychiatric disorders ranging from the prodrome of psychosis to common mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, and dissociative disorders. Memory deficits among patients recovering from psychiatric disorders could be directly related to the primary illness or secondary to the adverse effect of a treatment such as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). The trouble in the meaningful integration of working-memory and episodic memory is the most commonly affected domain that requires routine assessments. An update on the recent trends of methods of assessment of memory deficits is the first step towards understanding and correcting these deficits to target optimum recovery. A systematic literature search was conducted from October 2018 to October 2022 to review the recent methods of assessment of memory deficits in psychiatric disorders. The definition of 'Memory deficit' was operationalized as 'selective processes of memory, commonly required for activities of daily living, and affected among psychiatric disorders resulting in subjective distress and dysfunction'. We included 110 studies, most of them being conducted in western countries on patients with schizophrenia. Other disorders included dementia and mild cognitive impairment. Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia, Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery, California Verbal Learning Test, Trail Making Test Part A and B, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Wechsler Memory Scale, Wechsler Adults Intelligence Scale-IV were the most common neuropsychological assessments used. Mini-Mental State Examination and Montreal Cognitive Assessment were the most common bedside assessment tools used while Squire Subjective Memory Questionnaire was commonly used to measure ECT-related memory deficits. The review highlights the recent developments in the field of assessment of memory deficits in psychiatric disorders. Findings recommend and emphasize routine assessment of memory deficits among psychiatric disorders in developing countries especially severe mental illnesses. It remains interesting to see the role of standardized assessments in diagnostic systems given more than a decade of research on memory deficits in psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) has been described as a probable early stage of dementia, as it has consistently appeared to precede the onset of objective cognitive impairment. SCD is related to many risk factors, including genetic predisposition for dementia. The Apolipoprotein (APOE) ε4 allele, which has been thoroughly studied, seems to explain genetic risk for SCD only partially. Therefore, we aimed to summarize existing data regarding genetic factors related to SCD, beyond APOE ε4, in order to improve our current understanding of SCD. We conducted a PRISMA systematic search in PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase databases using the keywords "subjective cognitive decline" and "genetic predisposition" with specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. From the 270 articles identified, 16 were finally included for the qualitative analysis. Family history of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in regard to SCD was explored in eight studies, with conflicting results. Other genes implicated in SCD, beyond APOE ε4, were investigated in six studies, which were not strong enough to provide clear conclusions. Very few data have been published regarding the association of polygenic risk for AD and SCD. Thus, many more genes related to AD must be studied, with polygenic risk scores appearing to be really promising for future investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The sociohistorical experiences of Asian American older adults (AAOA) vary, but limited research has examined how immigration status operates as social determinants. This study builds on an existing framework to examine the relationship among social determinants and the differential effects of immigration status on cognitive difficulties among AAOA. METHODS Using 5-year estimate data from the 2019 American Community Survey, the study sample consisted of AAOA aged 65 years and older identifying as Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese (N = 100,584). AAOA were categorized as noncitizens, naturalized, or U.S. born for their immigration status. Participants who indicated having difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions were categorized as having cognitive difficulties. RESULTS Chinese were the most prevalent ethnic group (30%). Over 70% were naturalized citizens. About 8% endorsed having cognitive difficulties. According to bivariate analyses, there were considerable differences in AAOA's characteristics (e.g., age, gender, marital status, medical insurance, employment status) by their immigration status. The results from the logistic regressions showed that immigration status was independently associated with poor cognitive difficulties. By AAOA's immigration status, unique protective and risk factors were presented for cognitive difficulties. DISCUSSION The differential pattern of cognitive difficulties among AAOA reveals a fuller picture of variations within AAOA by immigration status. The results imply that more research is needed to develop culturally sensitive practices that account for the racialized differences by AAOA's immigration status. Further research into the interplay between structural determinants is necessary to formulate practice and policy interventions to address better successful aging for AAOA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM To investigate the independent relationships of visual impairment (VI) and Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) with physical function impairment (PFI) and the interaction effect between VI and SCC on PFI in American older adults. METHODS The data of this cross-sectional study was obtained from the 2005-2008 National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted in the United States. The VI criterion included both subjective self-reported eyesight conditions and objective visual acuity test results. The self-reported questionnaires were utilized to determine PFI and SCC. According to the survey design of NHANS, original data were weighted to produce nationally representative estimates. Both the unweighted original data and weighted estimates underwent analysis. Crude and adjusted logistic models were employed to assess the pairwise associations among VI, SCC, and PFI. To assess the interactive effect, measures such as the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP), and synergy index (S) were calculated. RESULTS A total of 2,710 subjects (weighted n = 38,966,687) aged 60 years or older were included. Compared with subjects without subjective visual impairment (SVI), those with SVI had a significant positive association with PFI [weighted OR (95%CI): 3.11 (2.25, 4.31)]. After multi-variable adjusting, the relationship remained significant [weighted OR (95%CI): 1.90 (1.32, 2.72)]. Similarly, those with objective visual impairment (OVI) were positively associated with the risk of PFI in the crude model [weighted OR (95%CI): 2.35 (1.53, 3.61)] and adjusted model [weighted OR (95%CI): 1.84 (1.07, 3.17)]. Moreover, we found the association of SCC with an increased risk of FPI [crude weighted OR (95%CI): 5.02 (3.40, 7.40); adjusted weighted OR (95%CI): 3.29 (2.01, 5.38)]. Ultimately, the additive interaction showed there was a significant positive interaction term between SVI and SCC on PFI, while OVI and SCC did not. CONCLUSION Both VI and SCC were significantly associated with PFI in elder adults. Besides, there was a significant synergistic interaction between SVI and SCC on PFI, which indicated the improvement of SVI and SCC may be beneficial for the prevention of PFI. For the elderly, especially those with multiple disabilities, comprehensive and targeted approaches are imperative to foster their overall well-being and health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Subjective memory complaints (SMC) might be an early sign of further deterioration in cognitive functions. However, no population studies have been published covering all Spain to determine the SMC prevalence. The objective of the present study was to determine the SMC prevalence in the general population residing in Spain >50 years of age and also which related actions were done. MATERIALS AND METHODS Interviews were conducted with a nationally representative sample >50 years of age using an online/computer assisted web interview (CAWI) questionnaire. The survey consisted of 34 items divided into two blocks. Presence of SMC was considered when in question 1 the subject answered that "Yes" he had some memory problem. RESULTS Two thousand three hundred people (53.7% women; 23.9% ≥75 years old) were interviewed. 31% answered that they considered they had a memory problem (no differences between sexes, mean time with memory problems of 3.0 years). A higher prevalence of SMC was observed in ≥75 years old (44%). 90% did not include any specific foods in their diet for their memory problems, neither were taking any pharmaceuticals, diet supplements or nutritional supplements (92%). 78% of those interviewed with SMC have not consulted health professionals for their memory problems. CONCLUSIONS SMC are considerably prevalent in our environment affecting almost a third of people ≥50 years of age. Most of the interviewees with SMC did not go to health professionals to manage their SMC.

Abstract
Group cognitive interventions can promote a sense of self-efficacy to older adults. Due to restrictive social distancing measures in the COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face interventions that aimed to promote cognitive health needed to be adapted to a virtual offering. Objectives This study aimed to analyze the effects of promoting cognitive health in a virtual group intervention for community-living older adults. Methods This is a mixed, prospective, and analytical study. Before and after the intervention, the tests were applied: Brief Cognitive Screening Battery (BCSB) and the Subjective Memory Complaints Questionnaire (MAC-Q). Data were collected at semi-structured interviews related to the adoption of memory strategies. Statistical tests were conducted for initial and final intragroup comparison. The qualitative data were assessed using thematic analysis. Results A total of 14 participants concluded the intervention. With respect to mnemonic strategies, the most relevant for the qualifier "Did not use it before and started to do so after the group" were association (n=10; 71.4%) and dual-task inhibition (n=9; 64.3%). According to the tests, the intervention improved incidental, immediate, and delayed recall, as well as the perception of memory for "Remembering the name of the person they just met," "Remembering the telephone number you use at least once a week," "Remembering where they put an object," "Remembering news from a magazine article or television program," and "In general, how would you describe your memory now compared to when you were 40 years old." Conclusions The synchronous virtual group intervention was shown to be feasible for the elderly in the community who participated in the study.

Abstract
Very little is known about autistic adults as they age. Early evidence suggests a potentially high risk for dementia and atypical cognitive decline in autistic middle and older age adults. Research in the general population indicates that self-reported cognitive decline may predict future dementia earlier than performance-based measures. Nevertheless, self-report dementia screeners have not been used to date in autism research. In a sample of middle and older age autistic adults (N = 210), participants completed a self-rated dementia screener, the AD8, to describe the rate of cognitive decline, examine associations of cognitive decline with age, educational level, sex designated at birth, and autistic traits, and document the psychometrics of a dementia screener in autistic adults. We found high rates of cognitive decline with 30% of the sample screening positive. The most common symptoms were declining interest in leisure activities, and increases in everyday problems with thinking, memory, and judgment. There was evidence that autistic individuals designated female at birth may be more vulnerable to cognitive decline than autistic individuals designated male at birth. Notably, reports of cognitive decline did not vary by age or educational level. Modestly elevated autistic traits were found in those screening positive versus negative for cognitive decline. Finally, the dementia screener showed good psychometrics, including convergent validity with an independent measure of current memory problems. These results could signal an emerging public health crisis in autistic adults as they age, and support the potential utility of self-report measures for early screening for cognitive decline in this population.

Abstract
The potential role of psychological distress as the pathway linking diabetes and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is still unclear. This study aims to investigate whether depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between diabetes and SCD in older adults. Baseline data from 3428 adults (55-94 years) of the South East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO), Malaysia were utilized. Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) were recorded at baseline and five years later. Mediation analyses with non-parametric bootstrapping methods were employed. A proportion of 20% of participants without SCC at baseline reported a decline in SCC after 5 years of follow-up. Known diabetes (β = -0.13, SE = 0.05, p = 0.02) and depressive symptoms (ß = -0.18, SE = 0.05, p = 0.001) were independently associated with SCD. Previously diagnosed diabetes was associated with depressive symptoms at baseline (ß = 0.04, SE = 0.02, p = 0.01), and greater SCD at follow-up (β = -0.19, SE = 0.06, p = 0.001). Mediation analyses revealed that 9% of the association between diabetes and SCD was attributable to an indirect effect through depressive symptoms (ß = -0.01, 95% CI 0.02-0.001, p < 0.0001). This study provides further evidence of the detrimental effects of diabetes and depression on subjective cognitive decline. Our findings also suggest that depression is an important pathway linking previously diagnosed diabetes with subjective cognitive decline in older adulthood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) are considered a risk factor for objective cognitive decline and conversion to dementia. The aim of this study was to determine whether self-reported or informant-reported SCCs best predict progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and/or dementia. METHODS We reviewed prospective longitudinal studies of Cognitively Unimpaired (CU) older adults with self-reported and informant-reported SCCs at baseline, assessed by questions or questionnaires that considered the transition to MCI and/or dementia. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed to obtain pooled estimates and 95% CIs. RESULTS Both self-reported and informant-reported SCCs are associated with an elevated risk of transition from CU to MCI and/or dementia. The association appears stronger and more robust for informant-reported data [1.38, with a 95% CI of 1.16 -1.64, p < 0.001] than for self-reported data [1.27 (95% CI 1.06 - 1.534, p = 0.011]. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that corroborated information from one informant could provide important details for distinguishing between normal aging and clinical states.

Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a prevalent and complex condition among older adults that often progresses into Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although MCI affects individuals differently, there are specific indicators of risk commonly associated with the development of MCI. The present study explored the prevalence of seven established MCI risk categories within a large sample of older adults with and without MCI. We explored trends across the different diagnostic groups and extracted the most salient risk factors related to MCI using partial least squares. Neuropsychological risk categories showed the largest differences across groups, with the cognitively unimpaired groups outperforming the MCI groups on all measures. Apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4) carriers were significantly more common among the more severe MCI group, whereas ApoE4 non-carriers were more common in the healthy controls. Participants with subjective and objective cognitive impairment were trending towards AD-like cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) biomarker levels. Increased age, being male and having fewer years of education were identified as important risk factors of MCI. Higher CSF tau levels were correlated with ApoE4 carrier status, age and a decrease in the ability to carry out daily activities across all diagnostic groups. Amyloid beta1-42 CSF concentration was positively correlated with cognitive and memory performance and non-ApoE4 carrier status regardless of diagnostic status. Unlike previous research, poor cardiovascular health or being female had no relation to MCI. Altogether, the results highlighted risk factors that were specific to persons with MCI, findings that will inform future research in healthy aging, MCI and AD.

Abstract
Subjective memory complaints (SMC), the main cognitive component of which is event memory, is a predictor of Alzheimer's disease in elderly people. The purpose of this trial was to investigate the effect of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) with theta frequency (6 Hz) on the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in the improvement of episodic memory in individuals with SMC in a double blind, randomized, and sham-controlled parallel study. Sixteen participants with SMC received either active or sham theta tACS on the mPFC. EEG was recorded, and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) was administered. tACS resulted in a significant improvement in episodic memory performance as measured by RAVLT. EEG data revealed a decrease in theta power; decrease in theta, alpha, and gamma current source density (CSD) in the postcentral, insula, and cingulate gyrus; and decrease in theta and gamma phase synchronization as a result of active tACS, compared to the sham group. Moreover, a significant correlation between delayed recall score of RAVLT and CSD in left inferior gyrus in theta frequency band was observed. The results of the current study showed that theta tACS of the mPFC can improve event memory in individuals with SMC through modulating the activity in the frontal and temporal regions in the brain and thus can be considered a potential therapeutic intervention for this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR) is a gait-based pre-dementia syndrome associated with risk of dementia. Ascertaining subjective cognitive and motoric complaints may facilitate early and remote identification of individuals with MCR as they are reported to precede and predict objective cognitive and motoric impairments in aging. METHODS The validity of five subjective motoric complaint (SMC) questions and 10 subjective cognitive complaint (SCC) questions was examined for discriminating MCR in 538 non-demented community-dwelling adults. Backward logistic regression was used to identify questions to develop a weighted score to define subjective MCR (MCR-S). Receiver operating characteristic analysis was applied to determine the discriminative ability of MCR-S for the objective MCR (MCR-O) definition based on SCCs and objectively measured gait. Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for potential confounders were used to examine the predictive validity of MCR-S for incident dementia. RESULTS Five subjective complaint questions (three SCC and two SMC) were associated with MCR-O. They were combined to define an MCR-S score (range 0-7) which yielded an area under the curve of 0.89 for discriminating MCR-O from receiver operating characteristic analysis. An optimal cut-score of 2 on the MCR-S score was determined to have good sensitivity (84%) and specificity (82%) for MCR-O. Over a median follow-up of 2.5 years, 29 participants developed dementia. Both MCR-S (adjusted hazard ratio 2.39) and MCR-O at baseline (adjusted hazard ratio 3.16) predicted risk of incident dementia. CONCLUSIONS Subjective MCR had high concordance with MCR-O and can provide a remote screening assessment for MCR-O, which can identify those at high risk for dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: As the aged population is growing worldwide, the topic of subjective memory complaints (SMCs) has become a major interest in the current research on cognitive aging and dementia in Asia. SMC’s relation to dementia is of critical relevance as SMCs were suggested as the first subtle indication of cognitive deterioration before the appearance of preclinical dementia and before actual objective cognitive impairment.
AIM: The main questions of this review were to first identify the common risk factors of SMCs in Asia. Second, the assessment tools commonly used in Asia to screen SMCs.
METHODS: This systematic review used four databases; Medline, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science. The literature searches were conducted from 2010 to 2021. The search terms strategy for all databases was “SMCs” AND “mild cognitive impairment (MCI)” OR “cognitive impairment” OR “MCI.” A total of 861 papers were found and extracted using preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analyses guidelines. After screening based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15 studies were identified for the purpose of the current review.
RESULTS: Of the 15 studies, 14 were cross-sectional and one was longitudinal. The main risk factors of SMCs in Asia were depression and objective cognitive performance. Other risk factors were problems with adaptive daily functioning, self-rated health and pain, sleep, material hardship, childhood socioeconomic status, social and leisure activities, and gender. The majority of tools used to screen SMCs included a close-ended method with questionnaires in their respective country’s first language. To date, there are no SMCs tools that analyze the cultural impact on the SMCs manifestation in Asia.
CONCLUSION: SMCs may be linked to changes in mood and cognition performance. Future studies may consider adopting a longitudinal design and explore quantitative studies as they might also help understand how individuals from various backgrounds manifest their memory difficulties. Besides, further research may consider using both open-ended questions and validated questionnaires to measure SMCs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Even though the effect of education on cognitive performance has been widely reported, the relationship between socio-cognitive mindfulness, cognitive performance, and memory complaint among the elderly with heterogeneous educational levels has not yet been investigated. AIM This study aimed to analyze the potential relationship between cognitive performance, memory complaint, and socio-cognitive mindfulness in a sample of healthy older adults with different years of education. METHODS In this quantitative, cross-sectional, observational, and analytical study, participants (n = 68) were assessed with a sociodemographic questionnaire, cognitive performance test (ACE-III), levels of socio-cognitive mindfulness (LSM-21), and memory complaint (Memory Complaint Scale). Descriptive statistics, as well as Pearson's correlation, and linear regression analysis were performed, and significance was assumed if p < .05. RESULTS Years of education correlated with cognitive performance and socio-cognitive mindfulness, but not with memory complaint. Socio-cognitive mindfulness had a positive correlation with cognitive performance and a negative correlation with memory complaint. Also, socio-cognitive mindfulness predicted cognitive performance and memory complaint both in bivariate analysis and when controlling for years of education. CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that older adults with higher levels of socio-cognitive mindfulness showed better cognitive performance and less memory complaint.

Abstract
Background The association between types of subjective memory complaint (SMC), poor objective cognitive performance, and brain Aβ deposition have been poorly understood. We investigated the association between types of SMC and objective global cognitive performance, then assessed whether this association is mediated by the brain amyloid prediction index (API). Methods In total, 173 non-demented older adults [63 cognitively normal (CN) and 110 mild cognitive impairment (MCI)] underwent comprehensive clinical assessments. Objective global cognitive performance and brain amyloid index were measured using the total score (TS) of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease neuropsychological battery and API, respectively. In total, four items of SMC from the subjective memory complaints questionnaire (SMCQ) (SMCQ1: a feeling of memory problem; SMCQ2: the feeling of worse memory than 10 years ago; SMCQ3: the feeling of worse memory than others of similar age; or SMCQ4: the feeling of difficulty in everyday life) in global memory function were assessed. Results In non-demented and participants with MCI, SMCQ3-positive and SMCQ4-positive groups were associated with decreased TS. In participants with MCI, the SMCQ3-positive group was associated with increased API, and API was associated with decreased TS, but the SMCQ4-positive group did not. In addition, the association between the SMCQ3-positive group and poor TS disappeared when API was controlled as a covariate, indicating that API has a mediation effect. Conclusion The present findings suggest that SMC, a feeling of worse memory performance than others in a similar age group, in the older adults without dementia is associated with poor objective cognitive performance via increased brain amyloid index.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Motoric Cognitive Risk Syndrome (MCR) is a predementia stage where slow gait speed and subjective memory complaints are present. The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of MCR and assess its relationship with sociodemographic factors and chronic conditions. METHODS This is a secondary analysis of the SABE Colombia study conducted in 2015. The analytic sample consisted of 17·577 participants. After determining MCR prevalence, logistic regression was performed to examine the correlates of MCR. FINDINGS The prevalence of MCR was 10·71 %. The median age was 71 years and women composed 74·63 % of the MCR group. After adjusting for confounding variables MCR was associated with increasing age (OR 1·69, CI 1·43 - 1·92), no or low education (OR 1·99, CI 1·67- 2·37), MMSE (OR 0·93, CI 0·91 - 0·95) and chronic conditions such as mental disorders (OR 1·36, CI 1·11-1·67), history of myocardial infarction (OR 1·24, CI 1·04 - 1·47), hypertension (OR 1·23, CI 1·08 - 1·40) and diabetes (OR 1.18, CI 1.01 - 1.37). INTERPRETATION This study found a prevalence of 10·71 % of MCR in Colombian older adults. Additionally, MCR was associated with chronic conditions and sociodemographic factors identified in prior studies. These results increase the awareness of a novel predementia stage whose identification can be performed by clinicians in the outpatient clinic, minimizing the cost of a full neuropsychologic evaluation performed in a memory clinic. Abstract
Background Episodic memory decline is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Subjective memory complaints (SMCs) may represent one of the earliest signs of impending cognitive decline. The degree to which self- or partner-reported SMCs predict cognitive change remains unclear. Objective We aimed to evaluate the relationship between self- and partner-reported SMCs, objective cognitive performance, AD biomarkers, and risk of future decline in a well-characterized longitudinal memory center cohort. We also evaluated whether study partner characteristics influence reports of SMCs. Methods 758 participants and 690 study partners were recruited from the Penn Alzheimer's Disease Research Center Clinical Core. Participants included those with Normal Cognition, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and AD. SMCs were measured using the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire (PRMQ), and were evaluated for their association with cognition, genetic, plasma, and neuroimaging biomarkers of AD, cognitive and functional decline, and diagnostic progression over an average of four years. Results We found that partner-reported SMCs were more consistent with cognitive test performance and increasing symptom severity than self-reported SMCs. Partner-reported SMCs showed stronger correlations with AD-associated brain atrophy, plasma biomarkers of neurodegeneration, and longitudinal cognitive and functional decline. A 10-point increase on baseline PRMQ increased the annual risk of diagnostic progression by approximately 70%. Study partner demographics and relationship to participants influenced reports of SMCs in AD participants only. Conclusion Partner-reported SMCs, using the PRMQ, have a stronger relationship with the neuroanatomic and cognitive changes associated with AD than patient-reported SMCs. Further work is needed to evaluate whether SMCs could be used to screen for future decline.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Because of inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between sleep quality and cognitive function in people with age-related memory complaints, we examined how self-reports of sleep quality were related to multiple domains of both objective and subjective cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults. DESIGN A cross-sectional study involving analysis of baseline data, collected as part of a clinical trial. MEASUREMENTS Two hundred and three participants (mean age = 60.4 [6.5] years, 69.0% female) with mild memory complaints were asked to rate their sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and their memory performance using the Memory Functioning Questionnaire (MFQ), which measures self-awareness of memory ability. Neurocognitive performance was evaluated using the Continuous Performance Test (CPT), Trail Making Test, Buschke Selective Reminding Test, and the Brief Visuospatial Test - Revised (BVMT-R). RESULTS Total PSQI scores were significantly associated with objective measures of sustained attention (CPT hit reaction time by block and standard error by block) and subjective memory loss (MFQ frequency and seriousness of forgetting). The PSQI components of (poorer) sleep quality and (greater) sleep disturbance were related to (worse) sustained attention scores while increased sleep latency and daytime sleepiness were associated with greater frequency and seriousness of forgetting. CONCLUSIONS Sleep quality is related to both objective measures of sustained attention and self-awareness of memory decline. These findings suggest that interventions for improving sleep quality may contribute not only to improving the ability to focus on a particular task but also in reducing memory complaints in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The current study examined within-person associations of self-reports of impaired current memory functioning and perceived decline with depressive symptoms in older adults without cognitive impairment, and whether these associations were moderated by individuals' levels of neuroticism, conscientiousness, and extraversion. METHODS Samples were drawn from the Einstein Aging Study (EAS), Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP), Minority Aging Research Study (MARS), Health and Retirement Study (HRS), and National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS), with over 8,000 participants (65+ years) included across datasets. In a series of coordinated analyses, multilevel linear models tested within-person relationships over periods of up to 22 years. RESULTS Across HRS and NHATS samples, self-reports of impaired current memory functioning covaried with depressive symptoms over time. This association was moderated by neuroticism, such that the association was stronger for individuals with higher levels of neuroticism. Across all samples, perceived memory decline covaried with depressive symptoms over time. This association was moderated by neuroticism in MAP/MARS, HRS, and NHATS, such that the association was stronger for individuals with higher levels of neuroticism. DISCUSSION Self-reports of impaired current memory functioning and perceived memory decline are important determinants of older adults' psychological well-being. In our results, at times when older adults perceive poorer memory functioning or decline, they also tend to report more depressive symptoms. Further, results from two larger datasets suggest that individuals' level of neuroticism may determine the extent to which self-reports of memory impairment and depressive symptoms covary over time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Memory dysfunction is characteristic of aging and often attributed to Alzheimer's disease (AD). An easily administered tool for preliminary assessment of memory function and early AD detection would be integral in improving patient management. OBJECTIVE Our primary aim was to utilize machine learning in determining initial viable models to serve as complementary instruments in demonstrating efficacy of the MemTrax online Continuous Recognition Tasks (M-CRT) test for episodic-memory screening and assessing cognitive impairment. METHODS We used an existing dataset subset (n = 18,395) of demographic information, general health screening questions (addressing memory, sleep quality, medications, and medical conditions affecting thinking), and test results from a convenience sample of adults who took the M-CRT test. M-CRT performance and participant features were used as independent attributes: true positive/negative, percent responses/correct, response time, age, sex, and recent alcohol consumption. For predictive modeling, we used demographic information and test scores to predict binary classification of the health-related questions (yes/no) and general health status (healthy/unhealthy), based on the screening questions. RESULTS ANOVA revealed significant differences among HealthQScore groups for response time true positive (p = 0.000) and true positive (p = 0.020), but none for true negative (p = 0.0551). Both % responses and % correct had significant differences (p = 0.026 and p = 0.037, respectively). Logistic regression was generally the top-performing learner with moderately robust prediction performance (AUC) for HealthQScore (0.648-0.680) and selected general health questions (0.713-0.769). CONCLUSION Our novel application of supervised machine learning and predictive modeling helps to demonstrate and validate cross-sectional utility of MemTrax in assessing early-stage cognitive impairment and general screening for AD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the associative role of depression and apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 allele (APOEε4) in subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and its progression to objective cognitive decline. METHODS After literature search in electronic databases, studies were selected by following precise eligibility criteria. Meta-analyses were performed to examine the role of APOEε4 and depression in SCD or its progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. RESULTS APOEε4 positivity was not different between SCD and normal individuals but was significantly higher in individuals with SCD plus than in normal individuals [odds ratio: 2.39 (95% CI: 1.87, 3.05); p<0.00001] and in SCD converters than in non-converters [odds ratio: 5.19 (95% CI: 2.36, 11.42); p<0.00001]. Depression was significantly higher in individuals with SCD [standardized mean difference: 0.63 (0.45, 0.82); p<0.00001] and SCD plus [standardized mean difference: 0.83 (0.43, 1.22); p<0.0001] than in normal individuals. However, depression was not different between SCD and MCI or between SCD converters and non-converters. Age of SCD converters was higher than non-converters [mean difference: 2.95 years (0.58, 5.31)]. CONCLUSION Whereas APOEε4 positivity was higher in SCD plus and SCD converters, depression was higher in SCD and SCD plus but was not different between SCD and MCI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inconsistent results are reported so far in the literature on the relationship between subjective memory complaints (SMC) and objective memory performance. Mixed findings triggered the need to investigate whether other potential mediating variables, such as mood and non-memory domains, affect the relationship between SMC and memory performance. AIMS The present study aimed to contribute in clarifying the relation between subjective and objective memory considering the potential role of mood and visuospatial/executive functions. METHODS Six hundred and sixty Italian community-dwelling adults (52-91 years old) were enrolled. Italian version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test (MoCA), Geriatric Depression Scale and Subjective Memory Complaints Questionnaire (SMCQ) were administered. Four subsamples were composed according to the following criteria: (a) participants with high visuospatial/executive function (VSE) score at MoCA and high mood; (b) participants with high VSE score and low mood; (c) participants with low VSE score and high mood and; (d) participants with low VSE score and low mood. RESULTS Preliminarily, two confirmatory factor analysis have set the one-factor structure of SMCQ as the best fitting model. Diagnostic accuracy of the SMCQ in discriminating high and low memory score was assessed. ROC analyses confirmed that a low score in executive tasks was associated with poor reliability of the SMCQ. On the contrary, well-preserved executive functions and high mood levels ensured a good reliability of SMCQ in detecting memory problems. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Although mood is a key mediator in the relationship between subjective and objective memory, preserving executive functions is essential for ensuring the accuracy of memory self-appraisal in adulthood and elderly.

Abstract
Objectives Depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment often concur in older persons. Differentiating the cause of cognitive impairment in older persons with Depressive Disorder (DD) from other diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is challenging. The goal of this study was to characterize cognitive impairment in older persons with DD. Design Cross-sectional retrospective observational clinical cohort study using patient records from 2014 to 2018. Setting Gerontopsychiatric services of Ulm University at Bezirkskrankenhaus Günzburg serving as primary psychiatric care institution and tertiary referral center for psychiatric care for older persons. Partcipants DD was diagnosed according to ICD-10 criteria. When indicated by the medical history or neuropsychological assessment further diagnostic procedures were initiated. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tap was routinely the first additional procedure. If patients did not consent to CSF tap or contraindications were present, 18F-fluordesoxyglucose-PET (FDG-PET) or Amyloid-PET (Am-PET) were performed. Materials and methods Extensive neuropsychological test battery to assess cognitive profile. Results 457 subjects were diagnosed with DD (DD-all; age 50–94; 159 males, 298 females). Biomarkers were assessed in 176 persons; in 90 of these subjects AD-biomarkers were negative (DD-BM-; age 54–89; 40 males, 50 females), and in 86 subjects at least one biomarker was compatible with AD (DD-BM+; age 60–90; 31 males, 55 females). Cognitive performance was below healthy controls (HC; n = 56; age 50–80; 30 males, 26 females) for all groups of patients with DD. With case-control matching of HC and DD-BM- we find that executive functions are impaired in about one out of three and delayed recall in about two out of three patients with DD. Conclusion Cognitive impairment is frequent in older persons with DD. Cognitive profile in older patients with DD without and with biomarkers of AD is not distinguishable. Therefore, cognitive impairment due to DD should be diagnosed after exclusion of comorbid AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the effects of multiple training modalities (MTM) on senior fitness and neuropsychiatric function in the elderly with subjective memory complaints (SMC). METHODS This study was conducted in 24 elderly subjects with Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) score of 0 and instrument of ascertainment of dementia 8 (AD8) score of <2. The participants were classified into SMC (n = 7) and non-SMC (n = 17).All were assigned to receive multiple training modalities (1 hour for each training: physical fitness activities, calligraphy or drawing, and meditation) twice a week over a 16-week period.A series of senior fitness test, and neuropsychiatric tests, namely the Traditional Chinese version Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE), Cognitive Assessment Screening Instrument (CASI), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD), were conducted before and after the intervention. We compared the differences of pre/posttest-MTM and SMC/non-SMC in senior fitness and the neuropsychological tests. RESULTS There was no significant difference between SMC and non-SMC groups in demographic characteristics. MTM showed significant improvement in senior fitness and CESD, but not in CASI and MMSE. Significant change in recent memory subscale of CASI was only observed in SMC group, whereas improvement of partial senior fitness and CESD were observed in both groups. CONCLUSION MTM had effects in enhancing senior fitness and improving depressive syndromes in the elderly. MTM contributed to greater improvement in recent memory function in the SMC group than in the non-SMC group.
