Cold Ambient Temperature Does Not Alter Subcutaneous Abdominal Adipose Tissue Lipolysis and Blood Flow in Endurance-Trained Cyclists

This study sought to investigate the effect of cold ambient temperature on subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue (SCAAT) lipolysis and blood flow during steady-state endurance exercise in endurance-trained cyclists. Ten males (age: 23 ± 3 years; peak oxygen consumption: 60.60 ± 4.84 ml·kg-1·min-1; body fat: 18.4% ± 3.5%) participated in baseline lactate threshold (LT) and peak oxygen consumption testing, two familiarization trials, and two experimental trials. Experimental trials consisted of cycling in COLD (3 °C; 42% relative humidity) and neutral (NEU; 19 °C; 39% relative humidity) temperatures. Exercise consisted of 25 min cycling at 70% LT and 25 min at 90% LT. In situ SCAAT lipolysis and blood flow were measured via microdialysis. Heart rate, core temperature, carbohydrate and fat oxidation, blood glucose, and blood lactate were also measured. Heart rate, core temperature, oxygen consumption, and blood lactate increased with exercise but were not different between COLD and NEU. SCAAT blood flow did not change from rest to exercise or between COLD and NEU. Interstitial glycerol increased during exercise (p < .001) with no difference between COLD and NEU. Fat oxidation increased (p < .001) at the onset of exercise and remained elevated thereafter with no difference between COLD and NEU. Carbohydrate oxidation increased with increasing exercise intensity and was greater at 70% LT in COLD compared to NEU (p = .030). No differences were observed between conditions for any other variable. Cycling exercise increased SCAAT lipolysis but not blood flow. Ambient temperature did not alter SCAAT metabolism, SCAAT blood flow, or fat oxidation in well-trained cyclists, though cold exposure increased whole-body carbohydrate oxidation at lower exercise intensities.

Independent, additive and interactive effects of acute normobaric hypoxia and cold on submaximal and maximal endurance exercise

PURPOSE

To evaluate the independent and combined effects of hypoxia (FiO2 = 13.5%) and cold (- 20 °C) on physiological and perceptual responses to endurance exercise.

METHODS

14 trained male subjects ( V . O2max: 64 ± 5 mL/kg/min) randomly performed a discontinuous maximal incremental test to exhaustion on a motorized treadmill under four environmental conditions: Normothermic-Normoxia (N), Normothermic-Hypoxia (H), Cold-Normoxia (C) and Cold-Hypoxia (CH). Performance and physiological and perceptual responses throughout exercise were evaluated.

RESULTS

Maximal WorkLoad (WL) and WL at lactate threshold (LT) were reduced in C (- 2.3% and - 3.5%) and H (- 18.0% and - 21.7%) compared to N, with no interactive (p = 0.25 and 0.81) but additive effect in CH (- 21.5% and - 24.6%). Similarly, HRmax and Vemax were reduced in C (- 3.2% and - 14.6%) and H (- 5.0% and - 7%), showing additive effects in CH (- 7.7% and - 16.6%). At LT, additive effect of C (- 2.8%) and H (- 3.8%) on HR reduction in CH (- 5.7%) was maintained, whereas an interactive effect (p = 0.007) of the two stressors combined was noted on Ve (C: - 3.1%, H: + 5.5%, CH: - 10.9%). [La] curve shifted on the left in CH, displaying an interaction effect between the 2 stressors on this parameter. Finally, RPE at LT was exclusively reduced by hypoxia (p < 0.001), whereas TSmax is synergistically reduced by cold and hypoxia (interaction p = 0.047).

CONCLUSION

If compared to single stress exposure, exercise performance and physiological and perceptual variables undergo additive or synergistic effects when cold and hypoxia are combined. These results provide new insight into human physiological responses to extreme environments.

A century of exercise physiology: concepts that ignited the study of human thermoregulation. Part 3: Heat and cold tolerance during exercise

In this third installment of our four-part historical series, we evaluate contributions that shaped our understanding of heat and cold stress during occupational and athletic pursuits. Our first topic concerns how we tolerate, and sometimes fail to tolerate, exercise-heat stress. By 1900, physical activity with clothing- and climate-induced evaporative impediments led to an extraordinarily high incidence of heat stroke within the military. Fortunately, deep-body temperatures > 40 °C were not always fatal. Thirty years later, water immersion and patient treatments mimicking sweat evaporation were found to be effective, with the adage of cool first, transport later being adopted. We gradually acquired an understanding of thermoeffector function during heat storage, and learned about challenges to other regulatory mechanisms. In our second topic, we explore cold tolerance and intolerance. By the 1930s, hypothermia was known to reduce cutaneous circulation, particularly at the extremities, conserving body heat. Cold-induced vasodilatation hindered heat conservation, but it was protective. Increased metabolic heat production followed, driven by shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis, even during exercise and work. Physical endurance and shivering could both be compromised by hypoglycaemia. Later, treatments for hypothermia and cold injuries were refined, and the thermal after-drop was explained. In our final topic, we critique the numerous indices developed in attempts to numerically rate hot and cold stresses. The criteria for an effective thermal stress index were established by the 1930s. However, few indices satisfied those requirements, either then or now, and the surviving indices, including the unvalidated Wet-Bulb Globe-Thermometer index, do not fully predict thermal strain.

Thermal Stability of Contractile Proteins in Bat Wing Muscles Explains Differences in Temperature Dependence of Whole-Muscle Shortening Velocity

AbstractMuscle contractile properties are dependent on temperature: cooler temperatures generally slow contractile rates. Contraction and relaxation are driven by underlying biochemical systems, which are inherently sensitive to temperature. Carollia perspicillata, a small Neotropical bat, experiences large temperature differentials among body regions, resulting in a steep gradient in temperature along the wing. Although the bats maintain high core body temperatures during flight, the wing muscles may operate at more than 10°C below body temperature. Partially compensating for these colder operating temperatures, distal wing muscles have lower temperature sensitivities in their contractile properties, including shortening velocity, relative to the proximal pectoralis. Shortening velocity is correlated with the activity of myosin ATPase, an enzyme that drives the cross-bridge cycle. We hypothesized that the thermal properties of myofibrillar ATPase from the pectoralis and forearm muscles of the bat wing would correlate with the temperature sensitivity of those muscles. Using myofibrillar ATPases from the proximal and distal muscles, we measured enzyme activity across a range of temperatures and enzyme thermal stability after heat incubation across a range of time points. We found that forearm muscle myofibrillar ATPase was significantly less thermally stable than pectoralis myofibrillar ATPase but that there was no significant difference in the acute temperature dependence of enzyme activity between the two muscles.

Angiostatic freeze or angiogenic move? Acute cold stress prevents angiokine secretion from murine myotubes but primes primary endothelial cells for greater migratory capacity

The skeletal muscle tissue can adapt to exercise and environmental stressors with a remarkable plasticity. Prolonged cold stress exposure has been associated to increased skeletal muscle capillarization. Angioadaptation refers to the coordinated molecular and cellular processes that influence the remodeling of skeletal muscle microvasculature. Two cell types are central to angioadaptation: the myocytes, representing an important source of angiokines; and the skeletal muscle endothelial cell (SMECs), targets of these angiokines and main constituents of muscle capillaries. The influence of cold stress on skeletal muscle angioadaptation remains largely unknown, particularly with respect to myocyte-specific angiokines secretion or endothelial cell angioadaptive responses. Here, we use an in vitro model to investigate the impact of cold stress (28°C versus 37°C) on C2C12 myotubes and SMECs. Our main objectives were to evaluate: 1) the direct impact of cold stress on C2C12 cellular expression of angiokines and their release in the extracellular environment; 2) the indirect impact of cold stress on SMECs migration via these C2C12-derived angiokines; and 3) the direct effect of cold stress on SMECs angioadaptive responses, including migration, proliferation, and the activation of the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR2). Cold stress reduced the secretion of angiokines in C2C12 myotubes culture media irrespective their pro-angiogenic or angiostatic nature. In SMECs, cold stress abrogated cell proliferation and reduced the activation of VEGFR2 despite a greater expression of this receptor. Finally, SMECs pre-conditioned to cold stress displayed an enhanced migratory response when migration was stimulated in rewarming conditions. Altogether our results suggest that cold stress may be overall angiostatic. However, cold stress accompanied by rewarming may be seen as a pro-angiogenic stressor for SMECs. This observation questions the potential for using pre-cooling in sport-performance or therapeutic exercise prescription to enhance skeletal muscle angioadaptive responses to exercise.

Combination of whole body cryotherapy with static stretching exercises reduces fatigue and improves functioning of the autonomic nervous system in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

BACKGROUND

The aim of this study was to explore the tolerability and effect of static stretching (SS) and whole body cryotherapy (WBC) upon fatigue, daytime sleepiness, cognitive functioning and objective and subjective autonomic nervous system functioning in those with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) compared to a control population.

METHODS

Thirty-two CFS and eighteen healthy controls (HC) participated in 2 weeks of a SS + WBC programme. This programme was composed of five sessions per week, 10 sessions in total.

RESULTS

A significant decrease in fatigue was noted in the CFS group in response to SS + WBC. Some domains of cognitive functioning (speed of processing visual information and set-shifting) also improved in response to SS + WBC in both CFS and HC groups. Our study has confirmed that WBC is well tolerated by those with CFS and leads to symptomatic improvements associated with changes in cardiovascular and autonomic function.

CONCLUSIONS

Given the preliminary data showing the beneficial effect of cryotherapy, its relative ease of application, good tolerability, and proven safety, therapy with cold exposure appears to be an approach worth attention. Further studies of cryotherapy as a potential treatment in CFS is important in the light of the lack of effective therapeutic options for these common and often disabling symptoms.

Response of Bone Metabolism Markers to Ice Swimming in Regular Practitioners

Objective: Both exercise and cold exposure cause physiological stress and they often occur in combination. However, the effects of exercise during severe cold on variation in bone metabolism in humans have remained elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the variations in circulating bone metabolism markers after ice swimming (IS).

Methods: Eighty-seven women and men aged 42–84 years old were recruited to perform regular IS activities. Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), total calcium (Ca²⁺), total phosphorus (Pi), total magnesium (Mg²⁺), N-terminal osteocalcin (N-MID), total propeptide of procollagen 1 (TPINP), and C-terminal telopeptide of type 1 collagen (β-CTX) were measured 30 min before and 30 min after IS. Bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD) were assessed at lumbar spine 1–4 (L1–L4) and femoral neck (FN). The IS habits were obtained from questionnaires and the 10-year probability of osteoporotic fracture was calculated using the FRAX^® tool with and without a BMD value of the FN.

Results: There were significant increases in PTH (median, 40.120–51.540 pg/mL), Ca²⁺ (median, 2.330–2.400 mmol/L), and Pi (median, 1.100–1.340 mmol/L) and significant decreases in TPINP (median, 38.190–36.610 ng/mL) and β-CTX (median, 0.185–0.171 ng/mL), while there was a trend for increased serum Mg²⁺ (P = 0.058) but no significant change in N-MID (P = 0.933) after IS in all subjects. The increases in the proportions of cases of hyperparathyroidemia, hypercalcemia, and hyperphosphatemia in those performing IS were statistically significant. The baseline levels and the changes of bone metabolism markers had associations with osteoporosis and bone status, but these may be age and sex dependent. Finally, there were significant correlations among the bone metabolism markers.

Conclusion: IS caused significant alterations in bone metabolic markers, specifically, increases in PTH, Ca²⁺ and Pi should raise concerns about potential cardiovascular health risks in severe cold exercise. Additionally, a divergence between PTH elevation and a decline in bone turnover, which shown a special change of bone metabolism after IS and may suggest potential therapeutic implications of cold exercise in PTH and bone metabolic disorders.

Impact of a Cold Environment on the Performance of Professional Cyclists: A Pilot Study

The practice of physical activity in a variable climate during the same competition is becoming more and more common due to climate change and increasingly frequent climate disturbances. The main aim of this pilot study was to understand the impact of cold ambient temperature on performance factors during a professional cycling race. Six professional athletes (age = 27 ± 2.7 years; height = 180.86 ± 5.81 cm; weight = 74.09 ± 9.11 kg; % fat mass = 8.01 ± 2.47%; maximum aerobic power (MAP) = 473 ± 26.28 W, undertook ~20 h training each week at the time of the study) participated in the Tour de la Provence under cold environmental conditions (the ambient temperature was 15.6 ± 1.4 °C with a relative humidity of 41 ± 8.5% and the normalized ambient temperature (T_awc) was 7.77 ± 2.04 °C). Body core temperature (T_co) was measured with an ingestible capsule. Heart rate (HR), power, speed, cadence and the elevation gradient were read from the cyclists’ onboard performance monitors. The interaction (multivariate analysis of variance) of the T_awc and the elevation gradient has a significant impact (F(1.5) = 32.2; p < 0.001) on the variables (cadence, power, velocity, core temperature, heart rate) and on each individual. Thus, this pilot study shows that in cold environmental conditions, the athlete’s performance was limited by weather parameters (ambient temperature associated with air velocity) and race characteristics. The interaction of T_awc and elevation gradient significantly influences thermal (T_co), physiological (HR) and performance (power, speed and cadence) factors. Therefore, it is advisable to develop warm-up, hydration and clothing strategies for competitive cycling under cold ambient conditions and to acclimatize to the cold by training in the same conditions to those that may be encountered in competition.

ACSM Expert Consensus Statement: Injury Prevention and Exercise Performance during Cold-Weather Exercise

ABSTRACT

Cold injury can result from exercising at low temperatures and can impair exercise performance or cause lifelong debility or death. This consensus statement provides up-to-date information on the pathogenesis, nature, impacts, prevention, and treatment of the most common cold injuries.

Practicing Sport in Cold Environments: Practical Recommendations to Improve Sport Performance and Reduce Negative Health Outcomes

Although not a barrier to perform sport, cold weather environments (low ambient temperature, high wind speeds, and increased precipitation, i.e., rain/water/snow) may influence sport performance. Despite the obvious requirement for practical recommendations and guidelines to better facilitate training and competition in such cold environments, the current scientific evidence-base is lacking. Nonetheless, this review summarizes the current available knowledge specifically related to the physiological impact of cold exposure, in an attempt to provide practitioners and coaches alike with practical recommendations to minimize any potential negative performance effects, mitigate health issues, and best optimize athlete preparation across various sporting disciplines. Herein, the review is split into sections which explore some of the key physiological effects of cold exposure on performance (i.e., endurance exercise capacity and explosive athletic power), potential health issues (short-term and long-term), and what is currently known with regard to best preparation or mitigation strategies considered to negate the potential negative effects of cold on performance. Specific focus is given to "winter" sports that are usually completed in cold environments and practical recommendations for physical preparation.

Human cold habituation: Physiology, timeline, and modifiers

Habituation is an adaptation seen in many organisms, defined by a reduction in the response to repeated stimuli. Evolutionarily, habituation is thought to benefit the organism by allowing conservation of metabolic resources otherwise spent on sub-lethal provocations including repeated cold exposure. Hypermetabolic and/or insulative adaptations may occur after prolonged and severe cold exposures, resulting in enhanced cold defense mechanisms such as increased thermogenesis and peripheral vasoconstriction, respectively. Habituation occurs prior to these adaptations in response to short duration mild cold exposures, and, perhaps counterintuitively, elicits a reduction in cold defense mechanisms demonstrated through higher skin temperatures, attenuated shivering, and reduced cold sensations. These habituated responses likely serve to preserve peripheral tissue temperature and conserve energy during non-life threatening cold stress. The purpose of this review is to define habituation in general terms, present evidence for the response in non-human species, and provide an up-to-date, critical examination of past studies and the potential physiological mechanisms underlying human cold habituation. Our aim is to stimulate interest in this area of study and promote further experiments to understand this physiological adaptation.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy for Muscle Specific Analysis of Intensity and Fatigue during Cross-Country Skiing Competition-A Case Report

The aims of the study were to assess the robustness and non-reactiveness of wearable near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology to monitor exercise intensity during a real race scenario, and to compare oxygenation between muscle groups important for cross-country skiing (XCS). In a single-case study, one former elite XCS (age: 39 years, peak oxygen uptake: 65.6 mL/kg/min) was equipped with four NIRS devices, a high-precision global navigation satellite system (GNSS), and a heart rate (HR) monitor during the Vasaloppet long-distance XCS race. All data were normalized to peak values measured during incremental laboratory roller skiing tests two weeks before the race. HR reflected changes in terrain and intensity, but showed a constant decrease of 0.098 beats per minute from start to finish. Triceps brachii (TRI) muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) showed an interchangeable pattern with HR and seems to be less affected by drift across the competition (0.027% drop per minute). Additionally, TRI and vastus lateralis (VL) SmO2 revealed specific loading and unloading pattern of XCS in uphill and downhill sections, while rectus abdominus (RA) SmO2 (0.111% drop per minute) reflected fatigue patterns occurring during the race. In conclusion, the present preliminary study shows that NIRS provides a robust and non-reactive method to monitor exercise intensity and fatigue mechanisms when applied in an outdoor real race scenario. As local exercise intensity differed between muscle groups and central exercise intensity (i.e., HR) during whole-body endurance exercise such as XCS, NIRS data measured at various major muscle groups may be used for a more detailed analysis of kinetics of muscle activation and compare involvement of upper body and leg muscles. As TRI SmO2 seemed to be unaffected by central fatigue mechanisms, it may provide an alternative method to HR and GNSS data to monitor exercise intensity.

Physiological and thermoregulatory effects of oral taurine supplementation on exercise tolerance during forced convective cooling

AbstractWe investigated the effects of taurine supplementation on cycling time to exhaustion in cold conditions. Eleven males cycled to exhaustion at a power output equivalent to the mid-point between ventilatory threshold and maximum aerobic power following 15-min rest in the cold (apparent temperature of ∼ 4°C; air flow of 4.17 m s^-1). Two hours before, participants ingested taurine (50 mg·kg^-1) or placebo beverage. Pulmonary gases, carbohydrate (CHO) and fat oxidation, body temperatures, mean local sweat rate, heart rate, rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and thermal comfort were recorded. Time to exhaustion was not different between trials (taurine = 14.6 ± 4.7 min; placebo = 13.4 ± 5.6 min, P = 0.061, d = 0.27). There were no effects (P > 0.05) of taurine on core temperature, mean skin temperature or local sweat rates. However, the placebo condition showed greater (P < 0.05) reductions in arm-to-finger temperature gradient (i.e. vasodilation) across pre-exercise passive cold exposure and increased CHO oxidation (P < 0.05). Participants also reached a thermally 'comfortable' level quicker in the taurine condition (P < 0.05). A 50 mg·kg^-1 dose of taurine did not statistically benefit endurance exercise after moderate cold exposure but conferred some potential vascular and metabolic effects.Highlights In the first study to examine the effects of acute taurine supplementation on exercise performance in cold conditions, we found no significant effects on exercise performance, despite the small effect size.We found preliminary evidence of effects on metabolism during exercise, with taurine supplementation moderately reducing whole-body CHO oxidation rate.Supplementation of taurine also conferred possible skin vascular effects, which was indicative of less vasodilation (or greater sustained vascular tone) when presented with a cold environmental stimulus.Future research should extend these findings to prolonged exercise at colder body temperatures, where the small effects revealed here could have greater influence on human performance and cold tolerability.

Effects of Interval-Training Exercise on People Who Have Had Persistent Post-Concussive Symptoms for Less Than One Year: A Pilot Study

This study is to examine the effects of a 12-session moderate intensity-interval-training program with blood flow restriction (BFR) and body cooling (BC) on people who have had persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) for <1 year. A single-blind randomized controlled trial of interval-training exercise with BFR and BC was conducted. Twenty-five adults with PPCS were assigned to the experimental group (n = 14) or the control group (n = 11). Both groups rode a recumbent elliptical machine for 21 min at moderate intensity (65% predicted maximum heart rate) twice a week for 6 weeks, but only the experimental group received BFR and BC while riding. The variances of overall PPCS scale scores and their sub-domain scores for individuals during the 6-week intervention and 6-week follow-up period were calculated. During the intervention, the fluctuation of overall symptom severity, severity in the cognitive domain and severity in the mood domain were significantly less in the experimental group (p = 0.03; p = 0.02; p = 0.02). During the follow-up period, the number of symptoms remained more stable in the experimental group (p = 0.02), and a trend toward less fluctuation of symptom severity (p = 0.05) was also observed. The reduced number of symptoms in the cognitive and sleep domains remained more stable in the experimental group following the intervention (p = 0.007; p = 0.02). The severity of mood and sleep symptoms also remained more stable during the follow-up period in the experimental group (p = 0.04). More stable recovery was found in individuals who exercised using BFR and BC than in those who underwent exercise without BFR and BC. Moderate intensity-interval-training exercise with BFR and BC alleviated post-concussive symptoms in people who have had PPCS <1 year.

Alterations in resting cerebrovascular regulation do not affect reactivity to hypoxia, hyperoxia or neurovascular coupling following a SCUBA dive

What is the central question of this study? What are the characteristics of cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation following a single SCUBA dive to a depth of 18 m sea water with a 47 min bottom time. What is the main finding and its importance? Acute alterations in CBF regulation at rest, including extra-cranial vasodilatation, reductions in shear patterns and elevations in intra-cranial blood velocity were observed at rest following a single SCUBA dive. These subtle changes in CBF regulation did not translate into any functional changes in cerebrovascular reactivity to hypoxia or hyperoxia, or neurovascular coupling following a single SCUBA dive.

ABSTRACT

Reductions in vascular function during a SCUBA dive - due to hyperoxia-induced oxidative stress, arterial and venous gas emboli and altered endothelial integrity - may also extend to the cerebrovasculature following return to the surface. This study aimed to characterize cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation following a single SCUBA dive to a depth of 18 m sea water with a 47 min bottom time. Prior to and following the dive, participants (n = 11) completed (1) resting CBF in the internal carotid (ICA) and vertebral (VA) arteries (duplex ultrasound) and intra-cranial blood velocity (v) of the middle and posterior cerebral arteries (MCAv and PCAv, respectively) (transcranial Doppler ultrasound); (2) cerebrovascular reactivity to acute poikilocapnic hypoxia (i.e. F I O 2 , 0.10) and hyperoxia (i.e. F I O 2 , 1.0); and (3) neurovascular coupling (NVC; regional CBF response to local increases in cerebral metabolism). Global CBF, cerebrovascular reactivity to hypoxia and hyperoxia, and NVC were unaltered following a SCUBA dive (all P > 0.05); however, there were subtle changes in other cerebrovascular metrics post-dive, including reductions in ICA (-13 ± 8%, P = 0.003) and VA (-11 ± 14%, P = 0.021) shear rate, lower ICAv (-10 ± 9%, P = 0.008) and VAv (-9 ± 14%, P = 0.028), increases in ICA diameter (+4 ± 5%, P = 0.017) and elevations in PCAv (+10 ± 19%, P = 0.047). Although we observed subtle alterations in CBF regulation at rest, these changes did not translate into any functional changes in cerebrovascular reactivity to hypoxia or hyperoxia, or NVC. Whether prolonged exposure to hyperoxia and hyperbaria during longer, deeper, colder and/or repetitive SCUBA dives would provoke changes to the cerebrovasculature requires further investigation.

Match Performance of Soccer Teams in the Chinese Super League-Effects of Situational and Environmental Factors

To investigate the effects of situational factors (match location, strength of team and opponent) and environmental factors (relative air humidity, temperature and air quality index) on the technical and physical match performance of Chinese Soccer Super League teams (CSL). The generalized mixed modelling was employed to determine the effects by using the data of all 240 matches in the season 2015 collected by Amisco Pro^®. Increase in the rank difference would increase the number of goal-scoring related, passing and organizing related actions to a small-to-moderate extent (Effect size [ES]: 0.37–0.99). Match location had small positive effects on goal-scoring related, passing and organizing related variables (ES: 0.27–0.51), while a small negative effect on yellow card (ES = −0.35). Increment in relative air humidity and air quality index would only bring trivial or small effects on all the technical performance (ES: −0.06–0.23). Increase in humidity would decrease the physical performance at a small magnitude (ES: −0.55–−0.38). Teams achieved the highest number in the physical performance-related parameters at the temperature between 11.6 and 15.1 °C. In the CSL, situational variables had major effects on the technical performance but trivial effects on the physical performance, on the contrary, environmental factors affected mainly the physical performance but had only trivial or small impact on the technical performance.

Effects of exercise in a cold environment on gene expression for mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy

Cold exposure during cycling and recovery enhances PGC-1α transcription, but aspects of mitophagy and a more intense cold exposure without recovery occurring in the cold have not been explored.

PURPOSE

Determine the expression of genes related to mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy following an acute cycling bout at a temperature below freezing compared to that of room temperature.

METHODS

Eleven male participants cycled at 65% Wmax for 1 h at -2 °C and 20 °C and then recovered at room temperature for 6 h. A muscle biopsy was taken from the vastus lateralis before exercise, 3 h, and 6 h post-exercise for gene expression analysis.

RESULTS

Exercising heart rate and skin temperature were lower in the cold (p < 0.001; p = 0.004), while core temperature was higher (p = 0.016). Temperature had no effect on gene expression (p > 0.05). BNIP3 and BNIP3L mRNA were not influenced by exercise (p = 0.329; p 0.233). PGC-1α and VEGF were higher after cycling (p < 0.001), but the extent of PGC-1α upregulation was reduced 6 h post-exercise (p 0.006). TFAM increased 6 h post-exercise (p = 0.001). NRF2, ERRα, PINK1, and PARK2 decreased 3 h post-exercise (p 0.035; p = 0.005; p = 0.002; p = 0.001), but this downregulation was diminished after 6 h of recovery (p = 0.017; p 0.006; p = 0.043; p = 0.047). NRF1 was marginally attenuated with exercise (p = 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Exercise induced alterations in gene expression for mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy, but these effects were independent of temperature.

Warm bodies, cool wings: regional heterothermy in flying bats

Many endothermic animals experience variable limb temperatures, even as they tightly regulate core temperature. The limbs are often cooler than the core at rest, but because the large locomotor muscles of the limbs produce heat during exercise, they are thought to operate at or above core temperature during activity. Bats, small-bodied flying mammals with greatly elongated forelimbs, possess wings with large surfaces lacking any insulating fur. We hypothesized that during flight the relatively small muscles that move the elbow and wrist operate below core body temperature because of elevated heat loss. We measured muscle temperature continuously in the small fruit bat Carollia perspicillata before and during wind tunnel flights, and discretely in diverse bats at rest in Belize. We found that bats maintained high rectal temperatures, but that there was a steep proximal-to-distal gradient in wing muscle temperature. Forearm muscles were 4-6°C cooler than rectal temperature at rest and approximately 12°C cooler during flights at an air temperature of 22°C. These findings invite further study into how bats and other endotherms maintain locomotor performance in variable environments, when some muscles may be operating at low temperatures that are expected to slow contractile properties.

Differences in V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak of Surfers When Paddling in Water vs. on a Swimbench Ergometer

Furr, HN, Warner, ME, Copeland, TL, Robles-Rodríguez, C, Ponce-González, JG, Nessler, JA, and Newcomer, SC. Differences in V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak of surfers when paddling in water vs. on a swimbench ergometer. J Strength Cond Res 33(4): 1095-1101, 2019-The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that surfers would achieve a higher V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak when tested in a swim flume vs. on a swimbench ergometer. Forty-eight surfers (male: 38, female: 10) aged 18-45 years participated in the study. Protocol 1 and 2 both measured heart rate, oxygen consumption (V[Combining Dot Above]O2), and respiratory exchange ratio while subjects performed an incremental paddling test both on a swimbench ergometer and in a swim flume. Protocol 2 additionally measured muscle activity and changes in skin temperature. V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak was significantly higher in the swim flume (33.03 ± 1.04 ml·kg·min) vs. on the swimbench ergometer (29.86 ± 1.08 ml·kg·min) (p value < 0.001). There were also significant differences in muscle activation and changes in skin temperature between the flume and ergometer (p-value < 0.05). Surfers significantly increased their V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak in the water suggesting previous reports of V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak likely underestimated surfer's aerobic fitness when measured on a swimbench ergometer. Future research investigating the aerobic fitness of surfers should be conducted while paddling in water or account for the 11% difference in V[Combining Dot Above]O2peak when tested on a swimbench ergometer.

Cardiovascular responses to cold and submaximal exercise in patients with coronary artery disease

Regular year-round exercise is recommended for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the combined effects of cold and moderate sustained exercise, both known to increase cardiac workload, on cardiovascular responses are not known. We tested the hypothesis that cardiac workload is increased, and evidence of ischemia would be observed during exercise in the cold in patients with CAD. Sixteen men (59.3 ± 7.0 yr, means ± SD) with stable CAD each underwent 4, 30 min exposures in a randomized order: seated rest and moderate-intensity exercise [walking, 60%-70% of max heart rate (HR)] performed at +22°C and -15°C. Systolic brachial blood pressure (SBP), HR, electrocardiogram (ECG), and skin temperatures were recorded throughout the intervention. Rate pressure product (RPP) and ECG parameters were obtained. The combined effects of cold and submaximal exercise were additive for SBP and RPP and synergistic for HR when compared with rest in a neutral environment. RPP (mmHg·beats/min) was 17% higher during exercise in the cold (18,080 ± 3540) compared with neutral (15,490 ± 2,940) conditions ( P = 0.001). Only a few ST depressions were detected during exercise but without an effect of ambient temperature. The corrected QT interval increased while exercising in the cold compared with neutral temperature ( P = 0.023). Recovery of postexercise blood pressure was similar regardless of temperature. Whole body exposure to cold during submaximal exercise results in higher cardiac workload compared with a neutral environment. Despite the higher RPP, no signs of myocardial ischemia or abnormal ECG responses were observed. The results of this study are useful for planning year-round exercise-based rehabilitation programs for stable CAD patients.

The Physiology of Paragliding Flight at Moderate and Extreme Altitudes

High Alt Med Biol 19:42-51, 2018.-Paragliding is a form of free flight, with extreme-altitude paragliding being an emerging discipline. We aimed to describe the physiological demands and the impact of environmental stressors of paragliding at moderate and extreme altitudes. We recorded oxygen consumption (VO₂), heart rate (HR), respiratory frequency (fR), tidal volume (V_T), oxygen saturation, accelerometry (G), and altitude in 9.3 hours of flight at moderate altitudes (to 3073 m, n = 4), 19.3 hours at extreme altitude (to 7458 m, n = 2), and during high-G maneuvers (n = 2). We also analyzed HR data from an additional 17 pilots (138 hours) using the Flymaster Live database to corroborate our findings. All pilots were male. Overall energy expenditure at moderate altitude was low [1.7 (0.6) metabolic equivalents], but physiological parameters were notably higher during takeoff (p < 0.05). Pilots transiently reached ∼7 G during maneuvers. Mean HR at extreme altitude [112 (14) bpm] was elevated compared to moderate altitude [98 (15) bpm, p = 0.048]. Differences in pilots' V_T and fR at moderate and extreme altitudes were not statistically significant (p = 0.96 and p = 0.058, respectively). Thus, we conclude that physical exertion in paragliding is low, suggesting that any subjective fatigue felt by pilots is likely to be cognitive or environmental. Future research should focus on reducing mental workload, enhancing cognitive function, and improving environmental protection.

Effect of Ambient Temperature on Pacing in Soccer Depends on Skill Level

J Strength Cond Res 31(7): 1766-1770, 2017-This study examines the influence ambient temperature has on the distances covered by players in soccer matches. For this purpose, 1,211 games from the top German professional leagues were analyzed over the course of the seasons 2011/12 and 2012/13 using an optical tracking system. Data show (a) significant differences in the total distance covered (TDC, in meters per 10 minutes) between the 1. Bundesliga (M = 1,225) and 2. Bundesliga (M = 1,201) and (b) a significant decrease in TDC from neutral (-4 to 13° C, M = 1,229) to warm (≥14° C, M = 1,217) environments. The size of the temperature effect is greater in the 1. Bundesliga (d = 0.30 vs. d = 0.16), although these players presumably have a higher level of fitness. This suggests that better players reduce their exertion level to a greater extent, thus preserving their ability to undertake the high-intensity activities when called upon. No reduction in running performance due to cold (≤5° C) temperatures was observed.

The effect of temperature, gradient, and load carriage on oxygen consumption, posture, and gait characteristics

PURPOSE

The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of load carriage in a range of temperatures to establish the interaction between cold exposure, the magnitude of change from unloaded to loaded walking and gradient.

METHODS

Eleven participants (19-27 years) provided written informed consent before performing six randomly ordered walking trials in six temperatures (20, 10, 5, 0, -5, and -10 °C). Trials involved two unloaded walking bouts before and after loaded walking (18.2 kg) at 4 km · h-1, on 0 and 10% gradients in 4 min bouts.

RESULTS

The change in absolute oxygen consumption (V̇O2) from the first unloaded bout to loaded walking was similar across all six temperatures. When repeating the second unloaded bout, V̇O2 at both -5 and -10 °C was greater compared to the first. At -10 °C, V̇O2 was increased from 1.60 ± 0.30 to 1.89 ± 0.51 L · min-1. Regardless of temperature, gradient had a greater effect on V̇O2 and heart rate (HR) than backpack load. HR was unaffected by temperature. Stride length (SL) decreased with decreasing temperature, but trunk forward lean was greater during cold exposure.

CONCLUSION

Decreased ambient temperature did not influence the magnitude of change in V̇O2 from unloaded to loaded walking. However, in cold temperatures, V̇O2 was significantly higher than in warm conditions. The increased V̇O2 in colder temperatures at the same exercise intensity is predicted to ultimately lead to earlier onset of fatigue and cessation of exercise. These results highlight the need to consider both appropriate clothing and fitness during cold exposure.

Effects of environmental temperature on physiological responses during submaximal and maximal exercises in soccer players

Background

Although thermoregulation is effective in regulating body temperature under normal conditions, exercise or physical activity in extreme cold or heat exerts heavy stress on the mechanisms that regulate body temperature. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of environmental temperature on physiological responses and endurance exercise capacity during submaximal and maximal exercises in healthy adults.

Methods

Nine male soccer players participated in this study. In this study, three environmental temperatures were set at 10 ± 1°C, 22 ± 1°C, and 35 ± 1°C with the same humidity (60 ± 10%). The participants cycled for 20 minutes at 60% maximum oxygen uptake (60% VO₂max), and then exercise intensity was increased at a rate of 0.5 kp/2 min until exhaustion at three different environmental conditions.

Results

Oxygen uptake and heart rate were lower in a moderate environment (22 ± 1°C) than in a cool (10 ± 1°C) or hot (35 ± 1°C) environment at rest and during submaximal exercise, and were higher during maximal exercise (p < 0.05). Minute ventilation was lower at 22 ± 1°C than at 10 ± 1°C or 35 ± 1°C at rest and during submaximal exercise, and no significant differences were observed in minute ventilation during maximal exercise (p < 0.05). Blood lactate concentrations were lower at 22 ± 1 °C than at 10 ± 1°C or 35 ± 1°C at rest and during submaximal exercise, and were higher during maximal exercise (p < 0.05). Time to exhaustion during exercise was longer at 22 ± 1°C than at 10 ± 1°C or 35 ± 1°C (p < 0.05).

Conclusion

It is concluded that physiological responses and endurance exercise capacity are impaired under cool or hot conditions compared with moderate conditions, suggesting that environmental temperature conditions play an important role for exercise performance.

The Impact of Different Environmental Conditions on Cognitive Function: A Focused Review

Cognitive function defines performance in objective tasks that require conscious mental effort. Extreme environments, namely heat, hypoxia, and cold can all alter human cognitive function due to a variety of psychological and/or biological processes. The aims of this Focused Review were to discuss; (1) the current state of knowledge on the effects of heat, hypoxic and cold stress on cognitive function, (2) the potential mechanisms underpinning these alterations, and (3) plausible interventions that may maintain cognitive function upon exposure to each of these environmental stressors. The available evidence suggests that the effects of heat, hypoxia, and cold stress on cognitive function are both task and severity dependent. Complex tasks are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat stress, whereas both simple and complex task performance appear to be vulnerable at even at moderate altitudes. Cold stress also appears to negatively impact both simple and complex task performance, however, the research in this area is sparse in comparison to heat and hypoxia. In summary, this focused review provides updated knowledge regarding the effects of extreme environmental stressors on cognitive function and their biological underpinnings. Tyrosine supplementation may help individuals maintain cognitive function in very hot, hypoxic, and/or cold conditions. However, more research is needed to clarify these and other postulated interventions.

Cold Stress Effects on Exposure Tolerance and Exercise Performance

Cold weather can have deleterious effects on health, tolerance, and performance. This paper will review the physiological responses and external factors that impact cold tolerance and physical performance. Tolerance is defined as the ability to withstand cold stress with minimal changes in physiological strain. Physiological and pathophysiological responses to short-term (cold shock) and long-term cold water and air exposure are presented. Factors (habituation, anthropometry, sex, race, and fitness) that influence cold tolerance are also reviewed. The impact of cold exposure on physical performance, especially aerobic performance, has not been thoroughly studied. The few studies that have been done suggest that aerobic performance is degraded in cold environments. Potential physiological mechanisms (decreases in deep body and muscle temperature, cardiovascular, and metabolism) are discussed. Likewise, strength and power are also degraded during cold exposure, primarily through a decline in muscle temperature. The review also discusses the concept of thermoregulatory fatigue, a reduction in the thermal effector responses of shivering and vasoconstriction, as a result of multistressor factors, including exhaustive exercise.

Thermal and hemodynamic response to whole-body cryostimulation in healthy subjects

Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) is an increasing applied cryotherapeutic method, that involves application of a cryotherapeutic factor to stimulate the body by the means of intense hypothermia of virtually the body's entire area. This method is still not well recognized in Western Europe. However in recent years it is becoming increasingly popular in sports medicine and also in clinical application. Cryotherapeutic agents used in WBC are considered to be a strong stress stimulus which is associated with a variety of changes in functional parameters, particularly of the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems. However, such strong influence upon the entire body could be associated with the risk of unexpected reactions which might be dangerous for homeostasis. The present study evaluated the complex hemodynamic physiological reactions in response to WBC exposure in healthy subjects. Thirty healthy male volunteers participated. Each subject was exposed to WBC (-120°C) for 3-min. None of the participants had been exposed to such conditions previously. The research was conducted with modern and reliable measurements techniques, which assessed complex hemodynamic reactions and skin temperature changes non-invasively. All measurements were performed four times (before WBC, after WBC, WBC+3h and WBC+6h) with a Task Force Monitor (TFM - CNSystems, Medizintechnik, Gratz, Austria). Body superficial temperature was measured by infrared thermographic techniques - infra-red camera Flir P640 (Flir Systems Inc., Sweden). Our results show a significant decrease in heart rate, cardiac output, and increase in stroke volume, total peripheral resistance and baroreceptors reflex sensitivity. These changes were observed just after WBC exposure. At stages WBC+3h and WBC+6h there was observed a significant drop in baroreceptors reflex sensitivity due to increased thermogenesis. In conclusion, the present findings suggest that WBC strongly stimulates the baroreceptor cardiac reflex in response to body fluid changes which sequentially modulate HR and BP control in supine and resting healthy subjects. The study was performed on randomized and homogenic group of young healthy subjects. Our findings are important for WBC safety determination in research and clinical studies.

Temperature and neuromuscular function

This review focuses on the effects of different environmental temperatures on the neuromuscular system. During short duration exercise, performance improves from 2% to 5% with a 1 °C increase in muscle temperature. However, if central temperature increases (i.e., hyperthermia), this positive relation ceases and performance becomes impaired. Performance impairments in both cold and hot environment are related to a modification in neural drive due to protective adaptations, central and peripheral failures. This review highlights, to some extent, the different effects of hot and cold environments on the supraspinal, spinal and peripheral components of the neural drive involved in the up- and down-regulation of neuromuscular function and shows that temperature also affects the neural drive transmission to the muscle and the excitation-contraction coupling.

Comparison of metabolic substrates between exercise and cold exposure in skaters

To test the effect of a cold condition on metabolic substrate and possible development of muscle injuries, short track skaters (n=9) and inline skaters (n=10) took rest and submaximal cycled (65% V(.)O2max) in cold (ambient temperature: 5+/-1 degrees C, relative humidity: 41+/-8%) and warm conditions (ambient temperature: 21+/-1 degrees C, relative humidity: 35+/-5%), for 60 min, each. Blood glucose (BG), triglyceride (TG), free fatty acid (FFA), and total cholesterol (TC) were determined to investigate the effect on energy metabolism. To estimate possible muscle injury in the cold condition, creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and myoglobin (Mb) were also measured. TG and FFA levels were increased during exercise in the cold condition, but were unaffected by the difference of skaters. Of the myocellular enzymes, CK was significantly higher during the transition from submaximal exercise to recovery phase in a short track skater compared with inline skater group, indicating a higher physical strain. Additionally, the level of Mb in the inline skater group significantly elevated during recovery phase in the cold compared with in the warm condition. It is concluded that exercise caused stress that was dependent on the ambient temperature. Therefore, exercise in the cold condition altered the circulating level of energy substrate and increased muscle injuries.

Self-rescue swimming in cold water: the latest advice

According to the 2006 Canadian Red Cross Drowning Report, 2007 persons died of cold-water immersion in Canada between 1991 and 2000. These statistics indicate that prevention of cold-water immersion fatalities is a significant public health issue for Canadians. What should a person do after accidental immersion in cold water? For a long time, aquatic safety organizations and government agencies stated that swimming should not be attempted, even when a personal flotation device (PFD) is worn. The objective of the present paper is to present the recent scientific evidence making swimming a viable option for self-rescue during accidental cold-water immersion. Early studies in the 1960s and 1970s led to a general conclusion that "people are better off if they float still in lifejackets or hang on to wreckage and do not swim about to try to keep warm". Recent evidence from the literature shows that the initial factors identified as being responsible for swimming failure can be either easily overcome or are not likely the primary contributors to swimming failure. Studies over the last decade reported that swimming failure might primarily be related not to general hypothermia, but rather to muscle fatigue of the arms as a consequence of arm cooling. This is based on the general observation that swimming failure developed earlier than did systemic hypothermia, and can be related to low temperature of the arm muscles following swimming in cold water. All of the above studies conducted in water between 10 and 14 degrees C indicate that people can swim in cold water for a distance ranging between about 800 and 1500 m before being incapacitated by the cold. The average swimming duration for the studies was about 47 min before incapacitation, regardless of the swimming ability of the subjects. Recent evidence shows that people have a very accurate idea about how long it will take them to achieve a given swimming goal despite a 3-fold overestimation of the absolute distance to swim. The subjects were quite astute at deciding their swimming strategy early in the immersion with 86% success, but after about 30 min of swimming or passive cooling, their decision-making ability became impaired. It would therefore seem wise to make one's accidental immersion survival plan early during the immersion, directly after cessation of the cold shock responses. Additional recommendations for self-rescue are provided based on recent scientific evidence.

American College of Sports Medicine position stand: prevention of cold injuries during exercise

It is the position of the American College of Sports Medicine that exercise can be performed safely in most cold-weather environments without incurring cold-weather injuries. The key to prevention is use of a comprehensive risk management strategy that: a) identifies/assesses the cold hazard; b) identifies/assesses contributing factors for cold-weather injuries; c) develops controls to mitigate cold stress/strain; d) implements controls into formal plans; and e) utilizes administrative oversight to ensure controls are enforced or modified. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that: 1) coaches/athletes/medical personnel know the signs/symptoms and risk factors for hypothermia, frostbite, and non-freezing cold injuries, identify individuals susceptible to cold injuries, and have the latest up-to-date information about current and future weather conditions before conducting training sessions or competitions; 2) cold-weather clothing be chosen based on each individual's requirements and that standardized clothing ensembles not be mandated for entire groups; 3) the wind-chill temperature index be used to estimate the relative risk of frostbite and that heightened surveillance of exercisers be used at wind-chill temperatures below -27 degrees C (-18 degrees F); and 4) individuals with asthma and cardiovascular disease can exercise in cold environments, but should be monitored closely.

Nutritional strategies for football: Counteracting heat, cold, high altitude, and jet lag

Environmental factors often influence the physical and mental performance of football players. Heat, cold, high altitude, and travel across time zones (i.e. leading to jet lag) act as stressors that alter normal physiological function, homeostasis, metabolism, and whole-body nutrient balance. Rather than accepting performance decrements as inevitable, well-informed coaches and players should plan strategies for training and competition that offset environmental challenges. Considering the strength of scientific evidence, this paper reviews recommendations regarding nutritional interventions that purportedly counterbalance dehydration, hyperthermia, hypothermia, hypoxia, acute or chronic substrate deficiencies, sleep loss, and desynchronization of internal biological clocks.

Muscular damage and intravascular haemolysis during an 18 hour subterranean exploration in a cave of 700 m depth

OBJECTIVE

To verify presence and severity of muscular and/or intravascular damage during a subterranean exploration of long duration.

METHODS

We measured serum levels of creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) as markers of muscular damage. We also measured haptoglobin as a marker of intravascular haemolysis, and platelets and leucocytes as markers of inflammation.

RESULTS

We found in all the participants an increase in CK, LDH, and platelets and leucocytes (mainly due to neutrophilia and monocytosis), and a decrease in the level of haptoglobin and circulating lymphocytes.

CONCLUSIONS

The observed data suggest that continuous effort during long alpine subterranean explorations, environmental conditions, sleep deprivation, multiple impacts on rocks, and compression caused by bindings of the caving harness cause muscle damage, intravascular haemolysis, inflammation response, and immunological changes.

Exercising in Environmental Extremes

Athletes, military personnel, fire fighters, mountaineers and astronauts may be required to perform in environmental extremes (e.g. heat, cold, high altitude and microgravity). Exercising in hot versus thermoneutral conditions (where core temperature is > or = 1 degrees C higher in hot conditions) augments circulating stress hormones, catecholamines and cytokines with associated increases in circulating leukocytes. Studies that have clamped the rise in core temperature during exercise (by exercising in cool water) demonstrate a large contribution of the rise in core temperature in the leukocytosis and cytokinaemia of exercise. However, with the exception of lowered stimulated lymphocyte responses after exercise in the heat, and in exertional heat illness patients (core temperature > 40 degrees C), recent laboratory studies show a limited effect of exercise in the heat on neutrophil function, monocyte function, natural killer cell activity and mucosal immunity. Therefore, most of the available evidence does not support the contention that exercising in the heat poses a greater threat to immune function (vs thermoneutral conditions). From a critical standpoint, due to ethical committee restrictions, most laboratory studies have evoked modest core temperature responses (< 39 degrees C). Given that core temperature during exercise in the field often exceeds levels associated with fever and hyperthermia (approximately 39.5 degrees C) field studies may provide an opportunity to determine the effects of severe heat stress on immunity. Field studies may also provide insight into the possible involvement of immune modulation in the aetiology of exertional heat stroke (core temperature > 40.6 degrees C) and identify the effects of acclimatisation on neuroendocrine and immune responses to exercise-heat stress. Laboratory studies can provide useful information by, for example, applying the thermal clamp model to examine the involvement of the rise in core temperature in the functional immune modifications associated with prolonged exercise. Studies investigating the effects of cold, high altitude and microgravity on immunity and infection incidence are often hindered by extraneous stressors (e.g. isolation). Nevertheless, the available evidence does not support the popular belief that short- or long-term cold exposure, with or without exercise, suppresses immunity and increases infection incidence. In fact, controlled laboratory studies indicate immuno-stimulatory effects of cold exposure. Although some evidence shows that ascent to high altitude increases infection incidence, clear conclusions are difficult to make because of some overlap with the symptoms of acute mountain sickness. Studies have reported suppressed cell-mediated immunity in mountaineers at high altitude and in astronauts after re-entering the normal gravity environment; however, the impact of this finding on resistance to infection remains unclear.

Physiological and Metabolic Aspects of Very Prolonged Exercise with Particular Reference to Hill Walking

Hill walking is a popular recreational activity in the developed world, yet it has the potential to impose severe stress simultaneously upon several regulatory systems. Information regarding the physiological strain imposed by prolonged walking outdoors in adverse climatic conditions was reported almost four decades ago and recent research has extended some of this work. These data indicate that once the walker fatigues and starts to slow or stops walking altogether, the rate of heat production falls dramatically. This decrease alone predisposes to the development of hypothermia. These processes, in adverse weather conditions and/or during periods when the level of exertion is low (with low heat production), will be accelerated. Since the majority of walkers pursue this activity in groups, the less fit walkers may be more susceptible to fatigue when exercising at a higher relative intensity compared with their fitter counterparts. The best physiological offset for hypothermia is to maintain heat production by means of exercise, and so fatigue becomes a critical predisposing factor; it is as important to facilitate heat loss, especially during periods of high exertion, as it is to maintain heat production and preserve insulation. This can be partly achieved by clothing adjustments and consideration of the intensity of exercise. Failure to provide adequate energy intake during hill walking activities has been associated with decreased performance (particularly with respect to balance) and impaired thermoregulation. Such impairments may increase susceptibly to both fatigue and injury whilst pursuing this form of activity outdoors. The prolonged low to moderate intensity of activity experienced during a typical hill walk elicits marked changes in the metabolic and hormonal milieu. Available data suggest that during hill walking, even during periods of acute negative energy balance, blood glucose concentrations are maintained. The maintenance of blood glucose concentrations seems to reflect the presence of an alternative fuel source, a hormonally induced increase in fat mobilisation. Such enhancement of fat mobilisation should make it easier to maintain blood glucose by decreasing carbohydrate oxidation and promoting gluconeogenesis, thus sparing glucose utilisation by active muscle. During strenuous hill walking, older age walkers may be particularly prone to dehydration and decreased physical and mental performance, when compared with their younger counterparts. In summary, high rates of energy expenditure and hypohydration are likely to be closely linked to the activity. Periods of adverse weather, low energy intake, lowered fitness or increased age, can all increase the participants' susceptibility to injury, fatigue and hypothermia in the mountainous environment.

The Comparison between Cool and Warm-hot Environments on Lipolytic Response during Prolonged Exercise

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cool exposure on lipolytic response during prolonged intermediate-intensity exercise in humans. Eight male subjects participated in this study; they performed 120-min cycle ergometer exercise at 60% of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) in a climatic chamber at 10 degrees C (C) and 30 degrees C (WH). There were no significant differences in oxygen uptake and respiratory exchange ratio between the two conditions during the prolonged exercise. Significant influences of cool exposure were observed in the changes in both heart rate and rectal temperature (p<0.01). Although cool exposure had no significant effects on plasma triglyceride, free fatty acid, and glycerol levels, changes in adrenaline and noradrenaline levels at C were significantly lower than WH during the prolonged exercise (p<0.01). Changes in the ratio of glycerol to noradrenaline (Gly/Nad), as an index of lipolytic efficiency, were significantly high at C as compared with WH (p<0.01). These results suggest that cool exposure has an influence on lipid metabolism during prolonged intermediate-intensity exercise, from the viewpoint of efficiency in lipolysis.

The Hemodynamic and Metabolic Effects of Shivering During Acute Normovolemic Hemodilution

To assess the hemodynamic and metabolic effects of shivering during extreme normovolemic hemodilution, we anesthetized 16 pigs with fentanyl-midazolam-pancuronium. Mild hypothermia (36.5 degrees +/- 0.1 degrees C) was induced by surface cooling, and the animals were randomized to either a control group (hemoglobin 118 +/- 3 g/L) or a hemodilution group (hemoglobin 52 +/- 2 g/L). In the latter group, blood was replaced with an isotonic Ringer's acetate/dextran 70 solution. Shivering was allowed to occur by a controlled decrease in the infusion rate of pancuronium. Shivering increased oxygen consumption (VO(2)) in both groups (P < 0.001). Initially, this was predominantly compensated for by an increased oxygen extraction ratio (ER), but when VO(2) was 2.3 +/- 0.2 times baseline, critical levels of mixed venous oxygenation (SVO(2) = 18% +/- 2%; PVO(2) = 22.5 +/- 1.5 mm Hg) and ER (82% +/- 3%) were recorded in anemic animals. Control animals did not reach critical levels until VO(2) was maximal (3.7 +/- 0.3 times baseline). Maximal attained VO(2) was less (2.9 +/- 0.1 times baseline) in the anemic animals (P = 0.01), and at this stage two of these pigs had myocardial lactate production, one of which died in ventricular fibrillation. Coronary perfusion pressure was significantly less (P < 0.001) in the anemic animals. We conclude that in this experimental model, maximal shivering as measured by VO(2) was limited in hemodiluted animals, and left ventricular oxygen balance was marginal, as evidenced by a decreased lactate uptake and extraction.

IMPLICATIONS

The effect of acute increases in oxygen consumption (shivering) on severely anemic individuals has not been evaluated. In this experimental model, left ventricular oxygen balance was marginal, as evidenced by decreased lactate extraction.

Physiological, metabolic, and performance implications of a prolonged hill walk: influence of energy intake

We aimed to examine the effects of different energy intakes on a range of responses that are relevant to the safety of hill walkers. In a balanced design, 16 men completed a strenuous self-paced mountainous hill walk over 21 km, under either a low-energy (2.6 MJ; 616 kcal) intake (LEI) or high-energy (12.7 MJ; 3,019 kcal) intake (HEI) condition. During the hill walk, rectal temperatures were measured continuously, and blood samples for the analysis of metabolites and hormones were drawn before breakfast and immediately after the walk. Subjects also completed a battery of performance tests that included muscular strength, reaction times, flexibility, balance, and kinesthetic differentiation tests. During the LEI, mean blood glucose concentrations leveled off at the low-middle range of normoglycemia, whereas, on the HEI, they were significantly elevated compared with the LEI. The maintained blood glucose concentrations, during the LEI, were probably mediated via the marked fat mobilization, reflected by a two- to fivefold increase in nonesterified fatty acids, 3-hydroxybutyrate, and glycerol concentrations. The LEI group showed significantly slower one- and two-finger reaction time, had an impaired ability to balance, and were compromised in their ability to maintain body temperature, when compared with the HEI group. The modestly impaired performance (particularly with respect to balance) and thermoregulation during the LEI condition may increase susceptibility to both fatigue and injury during the pursuit of recreational activity outdoors.

Physiological and metabolic responses to a hill walk

The physiological and metabolic demands of hill walking have not been studied systematically in the field despite the potentially deleterious physiological consequences of activity sustained over an entire day. On separate occasions, 13 subjects completed a self-paced hill walk over 12 km, consisting of a range of gradients and terrain typical of a mountainous walk. During the hill walk, continuous measurements of rectal (T(re)) and skin (T(sk)) temperatures and of respiratory gas exchange were made to calculate the total energy expenditure. Blood samples, for the analysis of metabolites and hormones, were taken before breakfast and lunch and immediately after the hill walk. During the first 5 km of the walk (100- to 902-m elevation), T(re) increased (36.9 +/- 0.2 to 38.5 +/- 0.4 degrees C) with a subsequent decrease in mean T(sk) from this time point. T(re) decreased by approximately 1.0 degrees C during a 30-min stop for lunch, and it continued to decrease a further 0.5 degrees C after walking recommenced. The total energy intake from both breakfast and lunch [5.6 +/- 0.7 (SE) MJ] was lower than the energy expended [14.5 +/- 0.5 (SE) MJ; P < 0.001] during the 12-km hill walk. Despite the difference in energy intake and expenditure, blood glucose concentration was maintained. The major source of energy was an enhanced fat oxidation, probably from adipose tissue lipolysis reflected in high plasma nonesterified fatty acid concentrations. The major observations were the varying thermoregulatory responses and the negative energy balance incurred during the hill walk. It is concluded that recreational hill walking can constitute a significant metabolic and thermoregulatory strain on participants.

Exogenous carbohydrate oxidation from drinks ingested during prolonged exercise in a cold environment in humans

Six healthy male volunteers performed four rides to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer at approximately 80% of maximal oxygen consumption. Subjects ingested a bolus volume of fluid (7.14 ml/kg) immediately before exercise and additional fluid volumes (1.43 ml/kg) every 10 min during exercise. The fluids ingested were either a flavored water control or glucose-electrolyte beverages with glucose concentrations of 2, 6, or 12%. The beverages were labeled with [U-(13)C]glucose (99.2%: 0.05 g/l). Exercise capacity was not different (P = 0.13) between trials; median (range) exercise time was 83.52 (79.85--89.68), 103.19 (78.82--108.22), 100.37 (80.60--124.07), and 94.76 (76.78--114.25) min in the 0, 2, 6, and 12% trials, respectively. The oxidation of exogenous glucose in each 15-min period was significantly lower in the 2% trial (P = 0.02) than in the 6 and 12% trials where oxidation rates were between 0.5 and 0.7 g/min. No difference in endogenous glucose oxidation was observed between trials (P = 0.71). These findings indicate that the oxidation of exogenous glucose during exercise of this intensity and duration in a cold environment is similar to that observed in warmer conditions. Thus a low oxidation of exogenous substrate is unlikely to be a factor limiting the effectiveness of carbohydrate-electrolyte drink ingestion on exercise capacity in a cold environment.

Local temperature changes and human skeletal muscle metabolism

The aim of this review is to describe the effects induced by local temperature changes on human skeletal muscle metabolism. More specifically, we will consider the influence of temperature on the mechanical properties of muscle contraction, on aerobic metabolism, anaerobic metabolism and on the Lohmann reaction. The text has been voluntarily organized on the basis of a simple bioenergetic model describing the different energy fluxes appearing in the muscle system. This approach should better highlight some of the points that still need to be investigated. Although it was not always possible to restrict the discussion to human muscle, the references report mainly data obtained directly on humans or on isolated human fibres. A short comment on skeletal muscle temperature measurement techniques, on humans, is also included.

Submaximal exercise in the cold: does cooling potentiate the development of muscle injuries in the rat?

To test the effect of low ambient temperature on muscular strain and possible development of muscle injuries, male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 35) were exercised at a speed of 15 m min-1 on a treadmill at a 6 degrees inclination for 1.5 h in a warm (22 degrees C) or a cold (-10 degrees C) environment. Blood and tissue samples were collected 0 and 48 h postexercise. Blood glucose, lactate, pyruvate, cortisol, epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) were determined to investigate the effect on energy metabolism. To estimate the degree of physical strain, possible muscle injury and regenerative processes of muscles in response to exercise in the cold, serum creatine kinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), muscle beta-glucuronidase and prolyl-4-hydroxylase (PH) activities were measured. In addition, histology of the hindlimb muscles m. soleus and m. tibialis anterior was examined. In general, the circulating level of metabolic substrates during exercise were unaffected by the exercise and independent of ambient temperature. Plasma cortisol increased significantly during exercise (P < 0.01), but was unaffected by the thermal strain. Of the myocellular enzymes, serum CK increased by 100% (P < 0.01) and LDH by 93% (P < 0.05) during exercise in the cold compared with exercise in warm, indicating a higher physical strain. However, exercise in the cold did not result in muscle injuries as judged by the unaltered muscular beta-glucuronidase, PH levels and muscle morphology. It is concluded that the exercise type and intensity used caused stress that was independent of the ambient temperature. In addition, the rats were able to maintain unaltered circulating levels of energy substrates also in the cold. Finally, exercise in the cold increased muscular strain but did not result in muscle injuries.

Exertional fatigue, sleep loss, and negative energy balance increase susceptibility to hypothermia

The purpose of this study was to determine how chronic exertional fatigue and sleep deprivation coupled with negative energy balance affect thermoregulation during cold exposure. Eight men wearing only shorts and socks sat quietly during 4-h cold air exposure (10 degreesC) immediately after (<2 h, A) they completed 61 days of strenuous military training (energy expenditure approximately 4,150 kcal/day, energy intake approximately 3,300 kcal/day, sleep approximately 4 h/day) and again after short (48 h, SR) and long (109 days, LR) recovery. Body weight decreased 7.4 kg from before training to A, then increased 6.4 kg by SR, with an additional 6.4 kg increase by LR. Body fat averaged 12% during A and SR and increased to 21% during LR. Rectal temperature (Tre) was lower before and during cold air exposure for A than for SR and LR. Tre declined during cold exposure in A and SR but not LR. Mean weighted skin temperature (Tsk) during cold exposure was higher in A and SR than in LR. Metabolic rate increased during all cold exposures, but it was lower during A and LR than SR. The mean body temperature (0.67 Tre + 0.33 Tsk) threshold for increasing metabolism was lower during A than SR and LR. Thus chronic exertional fatigue and sleep loss, combined with underfeeding, reduced tissue insulation and blunted metabolic heat production, which compromised maintenance of body temperature. A short period of rest, sleep, and refeeding restored the thermogenic response to cold, but thermal balance in the cold remained compromised until after several weeks of recovery when tissue insulation had been restored.

Cold-induced thermoregulation and biological aging

Aging is associated with diminished cold-induced thermoregulation (CIT). The mechanisms accounting for this phenomenon have yet to be clearly elucidated but most likely reflect a combination of increased heat loss and decreased metabolic heat production. The inability of the aged subject to reduce heat loss during cold exposure is associated with diminished reactive tone of the cutaneous vasculature and, to a lesser degree, alterations in the insulative properties of body fat. Cold-induced metabolic heat production via skeletal muscle shivering thermogenesis and brown adipose tissue nonshivering thermogenesis appears to decline with age. Few investigations have directly linked diminished skeletal muscle shivering thermogenesis with the age-related reduction in cold-induced thermoregulatory capacity. Rather, age-related declines in skeletal muscle mass and metabolic activity are cited as evidence for decreased heat production via shivering. Reduced mass, GDP binding to brown fat mitochondria, and uncoupling protein (UCP) levels are cited as evidence for attenuated brown adipose tissue cold-induced nonshivering thermogenic capacity during aging. The age-related reduction in brown fat nonshivering thermogenic capacity most likely reflects altered cellular signal transduction rather than changes in neural and hormonal signaling. The discussion in this review focuses on how alterations in CIT during the life span may offer insight into possible mechanisms of biological aging. Although the preponderance of evidence presented here demonstrates that CIT declines with chronological time, the mechanism reflecting this attenuated function remains to be elucidated. The inability to draw definitive conclusions regarding biological aging and CIT reflects the lack of a clear definition of aging. It is unlikely that the mechanisms accounting for the decline in cold-induced thermoregulation during aging will be determined until biological aging is more precisely defined.
