Abstract
This state-of-the-art review explores the relationship between depression and diabetes, highlighting the two-way influences that make treatment challenging and worsen the outcomes of both conditions. Depression and diabetes often co-occur and share genetic, lifestyle, and psychosocial risk factors. Lifestyle elements such as diet, physical activity, and sleep patterns play a role on the development and management of both conditions, highlighting the need for integrated treatment strategies. The evidence suggests that traditional management strategies focusing on either condition in isolation fall short of addressing the intertwined nature of diabetes and depression. Instead, integrated care models encompassing psychological support and medical management are recommended to improve treatment efficacy and patient adherence. Such models require collaboration across multiple healthcare disciplines, including endocrinology, psychiatry, and primary care, to offer a holistic approach to patient care. This review also identifies significant patient-related barriers to effective management, such as stigma, psychological resistance, and health literacy, which need to be addressed through patient-centered education and support systems. Future directions for research include longitudinal studies in diverse populations to further elucidate causal relationships and the exploration of novel therapeutic targets, as well as the effectiveness of healthcare models aimed at preventing the onset of one condition in individuals diagnosed with the other.

Abstract
Background Depressive symptoms and multimorbidity are global public health concerns, the relationship between the two variables remains unclear. This study was an intervention attempt through the lens of regional relational culture to identify and reduce adverse consequences of this relationship. We aimed to explore the prevalence of multimorbidity and depressive symptoms among older Chinese adults, the association between the two variables, and the underlying moderating mechanism. Methods This study extracted data from the China Health Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) of 8356 older adults aged 60 years and older and analyzed the correlation between multimorbidity and depressive symptoms in this population using Stata 16.0. Moreover, the correlation between multimorbidity and depressive symptoms was verified using logistic regression analysis, and a hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to test the existence of moderating effects between the two variables. Results The prevalence of multimorbidity and depressive symptoms among seniors aged 60 years and older was 66.16 and 36.85%, respectively. Multimorbidity was positively associated with depressive symptoms (p<0.001), and relationship satisfaction, social activity, and information isolation moderated this association (p < 0.05). Conclusion Older adults with multimorbidity are more likely to develop depressive symptoms, and regional relational culture can play a moderating role between them. The government, as well as aging-related sectors, can reduce the risk of depressive symptoms by improving relationship satisfaction, increasing social activity, and decreasing information isolation among older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the mental health burden of diabetes has received substantial attention, there is limited evidence on whether the risk of suicide-a severe consequence of mental health problems-increases among individuals with diabetes. Therefore, this study investigated the association between diabetes and suicide in Japan. METHODS This nationwide longitudinal cohort study included adults aged 18-74 years, who were enrolled in the Japan Health Insurance Association's health insurance programme between 2015 and 2022. Individuals newly diagnosed with diabetes were matched in a 1:1 ratio with those without diabetes, based on age and sex. We employed multivariable Cox proportional hazard models to estimate the hazard ratios for suicide in relation to the diagnosis of diabetes, adjusting for potential confounders, such as sociodemographic characteristics, history of psychiatric disorders, physical measurements, health behaviours and laboratory data. RESULTS Among 4 210 272 individuals in the matched-pair cohort, we observed 337 deaths by suicide among those with diabetes and 250 deaths by suicide among those without diabetes. After conditioning on potential confounders, diabetes diagnosis was linked to an increased risk of suicide (HR (95% CI) = 1.25 (1.06 to 1.47)). The association tended to be larger among those aged younger than 40 years and among women (among those aged 18-39 years, HR=1.69 (95% CI 1.05 to 2.73); among women, HR=1.56 (95% CI 0.92 to 2.64)). CONCLUSION Diabetes diagnosis may increase suicide risk among the working-age population, even after conditioning on potential confounders. Our findings underscore the importance of psychosocial support following a diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Limited research has examined associations between trait anger and hostility and incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) and diabetes-related heart complications. However, anger expression styles (i.e., anger-in, anger-out) have not been examined. The present study used secondary data to examine the associations between anger expression styles, cynical hostility, and the risk of developing T2D (objective 1) or diabetes-related heart complications (objective 2). METHODS Self-report data came from participants aged 50 to 75 years in the Health and Retirement Study. Anger-in (anger that is suppressed and directed toward oneself, anger-out (anger directed toward other people or the environment), and cynical hostility were measured at baseline (2006 or 2008). Follow-up data (i.e., diabetes status or diabetes-related heart complications status) were collected every 2 years thereafter until 2020. The objective 1 sample included 7898 participants without T2D at baseline, whereas the objective 2 sample included 1340 participants with T2D but without heart complications at baseline. RESULTS Only anger-in was significantly associated with incident T2D after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics (hazard ratio = 1.08, 95% confidence interval = 1.01-1.16), but the association did not hold after further adjustment for depressive symptoms. Only anger-out was significantly associated with incident diabetes-related heart complications after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, health-related covariates, and depressive symptoms (hazard ratio = 1.21, 95% confidence interval = 1.02-1.39). CONCLUSIONS Anger expression styles were differentially related to diabetes outcomes. These findings demonstrate the value of expanding the operationalization of anger beyond trait anger in this literature and encourage further investigation of anger expression styles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diabetes in the course of lifetime is related to a higher risk for mental disorders. The present study addresses the comparison of individuals with diabetes and non-diabetic individuals in depressive symptoms, generalized anxiety symptoms, and health-related quality of life. Furthermore, mediator effect of BMI and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) on the association between diabetes, depression, and generalized anxiety was analyzed. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, the three questionnaires PHQ-9, GAD-7, EQ-5D-5L were measured in a representative sample of the German population (N = 2386). In addition, the presence of diabetes and BMI were assessed via self-report. RESULTS There were higher values in depressive and anxiety symptoms as well as lower score in HRQOL in individuals with diabetes compared to non-diabetic individuals. Obese individuals with diabetes showed the highest rates in depressive symptoms and generalized anxiety as well as lowest score in HRQOL. With regard to the mediator analyses, association between diabetes, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms is partially mediated by the BMI and fully mediated by the HRQOL. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, individuals with diabetes have an increased risk in the development of depressive and anxiety symptoms as well as lower health-related quality of life. Future research and strategies in the public health policies among individuals with diabetes should take into account that the association between diabetes, depression, and anxiety is mediated by BMI and HRQOL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited evidence exists on the relationship between vitamin D status and mortality in depressed patients. METHODS This study investigates serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations in 8417 adults with depression among the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2005-2018). Mortality outcomes were assessed through National Death Index records up to December 31, 2019. Cox proportional risk models estimated risk ratios (HR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) for all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality. Restricted cubic spline analyses explored the nonlinear association of serum 25(OH)D levels with mortality, using the likelihood ratio test for nonlinearity. RESULTS The weighted mean serum 25(OH)D level was 66.40 nmol/L (95 % CI: 65.8, 67.0), with 36.3 % having deficient vitamin D (<50 nmol/L [20 ng/mL]). Over an average 7.16-year follow-up, 935 deaths were documented, including 296 CVD deaths and 191 cancer deaths. Higher serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with reduced all-cause mortality (HRs 0.55-1.00, p trend = 0.006) and cancer-specific mortality (HRs 0.36-1.00, p trend = 0.015) after multivariate adjustment. The relationship between serum 25(OH)D and all-cause mortality exhibited a nonlinear pattern (P for nonlinearity <0.001), with a 34 % lower risk for each unit increase in natural log-transformed 25(OH)D levels. Significant interactions were observed with age, antidepressant use, and diabetes status. CONCLUSIONS Higher serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with decreased all-cause and cancer-specific mortality in depressed adults, particularly among younger individuals and those using antidepressants or without diabetes. Further research is essential to understand mechanisms and interventions related to vitamin D in depression.

Abstract
The relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and depression presents a significant area of medical concern, characterized by a higher incidence of depression among T2DM patients compared to the general population. This connection is not only evidenced in the prevalence of depressive symptoms in diabetic patients but also in the way these symptoms impact diabetes management. Furthermore, the influence of antidiabetic medications, especially sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, on depression risk is a topic of ongoing research, with contrasting findings regarding the effects of drugs like metformin and pioglitazone. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between T2DM and depression, focusing on the prevalence of depressive symptoms among diabetic patients, and the role of antidiabetic medications in modulating depression risk. Methods Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), we focused on individuals with T2DM. Depression status was assessed using the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), a validated tool for evaluating depressive symptoms. Participants' depression status was categorized based on PHQ-9 composite scores. The analysis included demographic variables and the use of antidiabetic medications, with a focus on SGLT2 inhibitors. Logistic regression models adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, and BMI were employed. Results Our study involved 23,575 participants, of which 7,862 had T2DM. A significant difference in age and BMI was observed between diabetic and non-diabetic groups. Logistic regression analysis indicated that non-diabetic individuals had a significantly lower likelihood of depression compared to diabetic patients not on SGLT2 inhibitors. However, no statistically significant difference in depression levels was found between diabetic patients on SGLT2 inhibitors and those not on these medications. Conclusion These findings highlight the complex relationship between diabetes, antidiabetic medication, and depression. Notably, we found no significant impact of SGLT2 inhibitors on depression in diabetic patients, challenging previous assumptions about the role of specific antidiabetic drugs in mental health. We also revealed that older diabetic individuals reported fewer depressive symptoms, suggesting the influence of psychosocial factors and the need for age-specific depression management strategies. This research underscores the necessity of further studies to explore the nuanced effects of different antidiabetic medications on mental health outcomes, guiding toward more personalized treatment approaches for the mental health challenges in T2DM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study explores the causal relationship between diabetes and depression using a two-sample Mendelian Randomization (TSMR) method. METHODS The study selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) closely associated with diabetes and depression in European populations from the Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) database, to serve as instrumental variables (IVs). The main evaluation method was inverse variance weighted analysis (IVW), supplemented by verification using Weighted median, Weighted mode, and MR Egger methods. The Odds Ratio (OR) and 95 % Confidence Interval (CI) were used as the main evaluation indicators, along with sensitivity analysis. RESULTS This study found a negative correlation between diabetes and depression, suggesting that diabetes may reduce the risk of depression [IVW(FE): OR: 0.901, 95 % CI: 0.823 to 0.987; P = 0.025 < 0.05]. This finding was further confirmed by the Weighted median [OR: 0.844, 95 % CI: 0.730 to 0.974; P = 0.021 < 0.05] and Weighted mode method [OR: 0.766, 95 % CI: 0.637 to 0.921; P = 0.006 < 0.05]. However, the reverse showed no causal relationship between depression and diabetes (P > 0.05). Sensitivity analysis found no pleiotropy, and there were no large influences from individual SNPs on the result's robustness; the results are stable and reliable. CONCLUSION For the first time, this study using TSMR analysis found a negative correlation between diabetes and the risk of depression onset in European populations, suggesting that diabetes might reduce the risk of depression. But as the mechanisms are still unclear, these findings warrant further study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In consideration of the substantial occurrence rates of diabetes mellitus (DM) and depression, it is imperative to identify patients with DM who are at an elevated risk of developing depression. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine whether the risk of depression escalated proportionally with the severity of diabetes. METHODS 2,067,017 adults diagnosed with type 2 DM, with the exception of those diagnosed with depression either before or within one year of the index date, were identified from a nationwide population-based cohort in Korea. Severity scores for DM were established based on various factors, including insulin use, DM duration of at least 5 years, use of three or more oral hypoglycemic agents, the presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), cardiovascular diseases (CVD), or diabetic retinopathy. Each of these attributes was assigned a score of one point for diabetes severity, and their cumulative sum was defined as a diabetes severity score, ranging from 0 to 6. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 6.2 years, 407,047 cases of major depression were identified. Each component contributing to the DM severity score was significantly associated with an increased risk of depression (all P-values <0.001), with insulin use and the presence of CVD demonstrating the most significant correlation with depression risk. As the DM severity score increased, the risk of depression was observed to significantly escalate (P for trend <0.001). After adjusting for potential confounding variables, the hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of depression were 1.15 (1.14-1.16) in 1 point, 1.28 (1.27-1.29) in 2 points, 1.45 (1.43-1.47) in 3 points, 1.70 (1.67-1.73) in 4 points, 1.91 (1.84-1.98) in 5 points, and 2.01 (1.79-2.26) in 6 points, respectively. CONCLUSION The results of this study indicate that diabetes severity is positively associated with an elevated risk of developing major depression. Based on these findings, it is feasible to consider targeting depression screening efforts towards individuals with higher diabetes severity scores.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We evaluated whether adding basal insulin to metformin in adults with early type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) would increase emotional distress relative to other treatments. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The Glycemia Reduction Approaches in Diabetes: A Comparative Effectiveness Study (GRADE) of adults with T2DM of <10 years' duration, HbA1c 6.8-8.5%, and taking metformin monotherapy randomly assigned participants to add insulin glargine U-100, sulfonylurea glimepiride, the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist liraglutide, or the dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor sitagliptin. The Emotional Distress Substudy enrolled 1,739 GRADE participants (mean [SD] age 58.0 [10.2] years, 32% female, 56% non-Hispanic White, 18% non-Hispanic Black, 17% Hispanic) and assessed diabetes distress and depressive symptoms every 6 months. Analyses examined differences at 1 year and over the 3-year follow-up. RESULTS Across treatments, diabetes distress (-0.24, P < 0.0001) and depressive symptoms (-0.67, P < 0.0001) decreased over 1 year. Diabetes distress was lower at 1 year for the glargine group than for the other groups combined (-0.10, P = 0.002). Diabetes distress was also lower for liraglutide than for glimepiride or sitagliptin (-0.10, P = 0.008). Over the 3-year follow-up, there were no significant group differences in total diabetes distress; interpersonal diabetes distress remained lower for those assigned to liraglutide. No significant differences were observed for depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Contrary to expectations, this randomized trial found no evidence for a deleterious effect of basal insulin on emotional distress. Glargine lowered diabetes distress modestly at 1 year rather than increasing it. Liraglutide also reduced diabetes distress at 1 year. Results can inform treatment decisions for adults with early T2DM.

Abstract
Many studies, including case studies, meta-analyses, and randomized trials, have demonstrated the benefits of a low-carb diet in the management of obesity, diabetes, and pre-diabetes. Numerous studies suggest that diets low in carbohydrates are safe and can greatly enhance the management of both forms of diabetes as well as the general health of those who have the disease. When used in conjunction with effective therapy, this diet can result in weight loss, decreased prescription dosages, and in certain cases, remission from type 2 diabetes. Globally, there has been a notable surge in the prevalence of diabetes cases as a result of factors such as population growth, aging, urbanization, rising obesity rates, and declining physical activity. Diabetes can be controlled in large part by diet, and millets having low-glycemic index (GI) have become more significant as they release glucose into the bloodstream at a very slow rate. Creating a low-glycemic meal mix with locally sourced ingredients is crucial for daily diet plans. Dietary changes, particularly the addition of millet, can help prevent and manage diabetes mellitus. Eating practices have long been acknowledged for their important role in promoting health and wellness through the consumption of nutrient-dense meals. The health benefits of millet, an underappreciated food crop, are numerous and include low GI, high-fiber content, non-acid-forming potential, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and gluten-free status. Apart from staple crops like wheat and rice, millets are also very healthy and useful, and they have an immense amount of opportunity to aid in the global fight against food insecurity, which is a problem that many countries now confront. Millets are high on the list of recommended foods because of their many health advantages and antioxidant characteristics. Diets that are low in carbohydrates, low in GI, Mediterranean, and very low in calories are now popular. Diabetes can be managed with a nutritious diet, regular exercise, cessation of smoking, and maintenance of a healthy body weight. Furthermore, calorie restriction, the use of low-GI meals, and an increase in fiber content are all possible nutritional strategies in the management of diabetes.

Abstract
There is shortage of organs, including kidneys, worldwide. Along with deceased kidney transplantation, there is a significant rise in live kidney donation. The prevalence of prediabetes (PD), including impaired fasting glucose and impaired glucose tolerance, is on the rise across the globe. Transplant teams frequently come across prediabetic kidney donors for evaluation. Prediabetics are at risk of diabetes, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular events, stroke, neuropathy, retinopathy, dementia, depression and nonalcoholic liver disease along with increased risk of all-cause mortality. Unfortunately, most of the studies done in prediabetic kidney donors are retrospective in nature and have a short follow up period. There is lack of prospective long-term studies to know about the real risk of complications after donation. Furthermore, there are variations in recommendations from various guidelines across the globe for donations in prediabetics, leading to more confusion among clinicians. This increases the responsibility of transplant teams to take appropriate decisions in the best interest of both donors and recipients. This review focuses on pathophysiological changes of PD in kidneys, potential complications of PD, other risk factors for development of type 2 diabetes, a review of guidelines for kidney donation, the potential role of diabetes risk score and calculator in kidney donors and the way forward for the evaluation and selection of prediabetic kidney donors.

Abstract
As the prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and depression increases, it is important to examine how their associations are changing overtime. We investigated the temporal trends in the association between depressive symptoms, body mass index (BMI) and glucose profile parameters using data from 2005 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire. A total of 32,653 participants were included. Risk of depressive symptoms increased with higher BMI (aOR = 1.586, 95 % CI [1.364, 1.843]), insulin (aOR = 1.327, 95 % CI [1.159, 1.519]), HbA1c (aOR = 1.330, 95 % CI [1.116, 1.585]), or fasting glucose (aOR = 1.565, 95 % CI [1.247, 1.964]) levels compared to those with low levels. Sex differences were found, as overweight males had lower odds of depressive symptoms compared to healthy males, while overweight and obese females had higher odds compared to healthy females. High BMI and glucose parameters were consistently associated with higher depressive symptoms prevalence over time. Temporal variations were observed in the depressive symptoms-BMI and depressive symptoms-HbA1c associations, particularly at the 2007-2008 cycle. This study provides analytic insights into population level trends concerning physical and mental health problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We sought to identify depressive symptom subgroups in a community sample of young adults, investigate their stability over time, and determine their association with prevalent and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. METHOD Participants were 3377 adults from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study. Using latent class and latent transition analysis, we derived subgroups based on items of the 20-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale in 1990, and examined patterns of change over a 10-year period (1990-2000). Cox regression models were used to examine associations between subgroup membership and prevalent (2000) and incident (2000 to 2016) obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. RESULTS Three baseline subgroups were identified and labeled: "No Symptoms" (63.5%), "Lack of Positive Affect" (PA, 25.6%), and "Depressed Mood" (10.9%). At 10-year follow-up, individuals in "No Symptoms" subgroup had the highest probability (0.84) of being classified within the same subgroup. Participants classified as "Lack of PA" were likely (0.46) to remain in the same subgroup or be classified as "No Symptoms." Participants in the "Depressed Mood" were most likely to transition to the "Lack of PA" subgroup (0.38). Overall, 30.5% of participants transitioned between subgroups, with 11.4% classified as "Worsening" and 19.1% as "Improving." Relative to the "No Symptoms Stable," other subgroups ("Depressed Stable," "Worsening," and "Improving") were associated with prevalent obesity and hypertension. CONCLUSION We identified distinct depressive symptom subgroups that are variably stable over time, and their change patterns were differentially associated with CVD risk factor prevalence.

Abstract
In individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), comorbid depression leads to increased health care costs and unsatisfactory treatment outcomes. Supporting healthy behaviors and self-efficacy might provide means to prevent depressive symptoms. We assessed the effects of motivational interviewing (MI) - based self-care promotion that specifically targets health behaviors, on depressive symptoms in adults with T2D. We followed PRISMA guidelines and searched Pubmed, Scopus, PsycINFO, Cinahl, and Cochrane Library to find randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to February 2023. Eligible RCTs had to target the T2D adult population, examine MI-based interventions that focus on multiple health behaviors, and measure depressive symptoms on a validated scale. Standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals were calculated using a random-effects model. We used the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to assess the certainty of the evidence. After the screening, eleven studies with 2,682 individuals were eligible for the narrative synthesis. A meta-analysis of nine studies favored interventions with a pooled SMD of -0.19 (95% Cl = -0.34 to -0.05, p = 0.008, I2 = 52%). Due to the indirectness and imprecision of the evidence, we assessed the certainty of evidence based on GRADE as low. MI-based self-care promotion with a focus on health behaviors and implemented by a well MI-trained person had a preventive effect on depressive symptoms among adults with T2D. However, the certainty of evidence remained low. In future trials, the effect of MI-based self-care promotion on depression should be studied in clinically depressed populations.

Abstract
AIM This study aims to assess the prevalence and associated factors of depression among diabetic patients in a cross-sectional sample and perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the extant studies to date. METHODS A face-to-face semi-structured interview of established diabetic patients was conducted in four districts of Bangladesh between May 24 to June 24, 2022, and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) was used to detect depression. PRISMA guidelines were followed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis, with Bangladeshi articles published until 3rd February 2023. RESULTS The prevalence of depression among 390 diabetic patients was 25.9%. Having secondary education and using both insulin and medication increased the likelihood of depression, whereas being a business professional and being physically active reduced the likelihood of depression. The systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that the pooled estimated prevalence of depression was 42% (95% CI 32-52%). Females had a 1.12-times higher risk of depression than males (OR = 1.12, 95% CI: 0.99 to 1.25, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Two-fifths of diabetic patients were depressed, with females at higher risk. Since depression among diabetic patients increases adverse outcomes, improved awareness and screening methods should be implemented to detect and treat depression in diabetic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies suggested a close link between type 2 diabetes (T2D), metabolic factors and depression, while the causal relationships remained poorly understood. OBJECTIVE To determine the causality between T2D and depression, and to investigate the roles of metabolic factors in mediating the relationship between T2D and depression in East Asians. METHODS Using summary statistics from the largest and most up-to-date genome-wide association studies of depression (12,588 cases and 85,914 controls) and T2D (36,614 cases and 155,150 controls) among East Asians, two-step and two-sample MR analyses were performed to estimate the causal mediation effects of metabolic factors including lipids profiles, blood pressure (BP) and fasting insulin (FI) on the relationship between T2D and depression. RESULTS Genetically predicted T2D was significantly associated with depression (OR [95 % CI]:1.06 [1.01, 1.11], P = 0.043), but not vice versa. T2D was causally associated with lower levels of HDL-C and higher levels of LDL-C, triglycerides (TG), BP and FI. Furthermore, the causal effects of T2D on depression were significantly mediated by LDL-C (β [95 % CI]: -0.003 [-0.005, -0.001], P = 0.007), and suggestively mediated by TG (0.001 [0.001, 0.003], P = 0.049) and FI (0.006 [0.001, 0.012], P = 0.049). LIMITATIONS First, depression was defined by several methods, like symptom questionnaires or self-completed surveys. Second, two-sample MR approach is unable to detect the non-linear causal relationships. Third, independent data sets were not available for replication of our findings. CONCLUSION T2D was causally associated with the risk of depression, and LDL-C, TG, and FI were potential causal mediators of the effect of T2D on depression. Understanding the causality among T2D, metabolic factors and depression is crucial for identifying potential targets for early intervention.

Abstract
Neuropsychiatric disorders, including anxiety and depression, are one of the most common mental illnesses worldwide. A growing body of evidence shows that there is a complex relationship between dietary patterns and mental health. In our study, C57BL/6J mice were divided into three groups: control diet group (CON, 10 % kcal fat), high-cholesterol diet model group (HCD, 42.0 % kcal fat + 1.25 % kcal Cholesterol), and chronic restraint stress group (CRS, 10 % kcal fat) which as a positive control group for the depression model. Six weeks later, depressive- and anxiety-like behavior were evaluated for using the OFT, SPT and TST. Glucose intolerance and liver fat were detected by IGTT and liver lipid kit. The expression of peripheral and central inflammation was detected by LEGEND plex kits. 5-HT (also named 5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) and related receptors expression were monitored by ELISA, RT-PCR and Western blot. Meantime, gut microbe of stool samples was performed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Similar to CRS model, short-term HCD intervention induced anxiety and depression-like behavior behavioral abnormalities in mice. HCD consumption resulted in significantly increased body weight, liver fat (LDL-C, TC, TG), peripheral inflammation (IL-1β, MCP-1, IL-17A) and neuroinflammation (MCP-1). The concentration of 5-HT increased in the hippocampus, meanwhile, the expression of 5-HT receptor HTR2A was distinct in different regions of the brain tissue. More importantly, we found that compared with the CON diet, HCD induced the decrease of intestinal flora diversity, especially the decrease the relative abundance of Akkermansia_muciniphila, which was statistically significant. Further, Pearson correlation analysis showed that Akkermansia_muciniphila was significantly negatively correlated with the concentration of MCP-1, IL-17A in serum and 5-HT in hippocampus. Therefore, we speculated that the disorder of neuroinflammation induced by HCD consumption promotes depression- and anxiety-like behaviors in mice through the gut microbe.

Abstract
PURPOSE To estimate the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) according to glycemic status, and its relationship with sociodemographic and clinical factors in a population at risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS Cross-sectional study, using cluster sampling. Data were collected from 1135 participants over 30 years of age, at risk of developing T2D from the PREDICOL project. Participants' glycemic status was defined using an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Participants were divided into normoglycemic subjects (NGT), prediabetes and diabetics do not know they have diabetes (UT2D). HRQOL was assessed using the EQ-5D-3L questionnaire of the EuroQol group. Logistic regression and Tobit models were used to examine factors associated with EQ-5D scores for each glycemic group. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 55.6 ± 12.1 years, 76.4% were female, and one in four participants had prediabetes or unknown diabetes. Participants reported problems most frequently on the dimensions of Pain/Discomfort and Anxiety/Depression in the different glycemic groups. The mean EQ-5D score in NGT was 0.80 (95% CI 0.79-0.81), in prediabetes, 0.81 (95% CI 0.79-0.83), and in participants with UT2D of 0.79 (95% CI 0.76-0.82), respectively. Female sex, older age, city of residence, lower education, receiving treatment for hypertension, and marital status were significantly associated with lower levels of HRQOL in the Tobit regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS HRQOL of NGT, prediabetes, and UT2D participants was statistically similar. However, factors such as gender, age. and place of residence were found to be significant predictors of HRQOL for each glycemic group.

Racial disparity in the co-occurrence of depression and type 2 diabetes mellitus. An electronic medical record study involving African American and White Caucasian adults from the US. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Depression and diabetes commonly co-exist, however the temporal trends in the bidirectional association of both diseases in different sociodemographic setting has not been explored. We investigated the trends in prevalence and likelihood of having either depression or type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in African American (AA, or black) and White Caucasians (WC, or white). METHODS In this nationwide population-based study, the US Centricity Electronic Medical Records was used to establish cohorts of >2.5 million adults diagnosed with either T2DM or depression between 2006 and 2017. Logistic regression models were used to investigate ethnic differences in: (a) subsequent probability of depression in individuals with T2DM; and (b) subsequent probability of T2DM in individuals with depression; stratified by age and sex. RESULTS A total of 920,771 (15 % black) adults were identified with T2DM and 1,801,679 (10 % black) with depression. AA diagnosed with T2DM were much younger (56 vs. 60 years) and had significantly lower prevalence of depression (17 vs. 28 %). AA diagnosed with depression were slightly younger (46 vs. 48 years) and had significantly higher prevalence of T2DM (21 % vs. 14 %). The prevalence of depression in T2DM increased from 12 % (11, 14) to 23 % (20, 23) in black and 26 (25, 26) to 32 (32, 33) in white. Depressive AA above 50 years recorded the highest adjusted probability of T2DM (men: 6.3 % (5.8, 7.0), women: 6.3 % (5.9, 6.7)), while diabetic white women below 50 years had the highest probability of depression (20.2 % (18.6, 22.0)). No significant ethnic difference in diabetes was observed for younger adults diagnosed with depression: black 3.1 % (2.7, 3.7); white 2.5 % (2.2, 2.7). CONCLUSIONS We have observed significant difference in depression between AA and WC recently diagnosed with diabetes consistent across different demographics. Depression in people with diabetes is increasing with significantly higher values among white women younger than 50 years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bidirectional longitudinal relationships between depression and diabetes have been observed, but the dominant direction of their temporal relationships remains controversial. METHODS The random-intercept cross-lagged panel model decomposes observed variables into a latent intercept representing the traits, and occasion-specific latent 'state' variables. This permits correlations to be assessed between the traits, while longitudinal 'cross-lagged' associations and cross-sectional correlations can be assessed between occasion-specific latent variables. We examined dynamic relationships between depressive symptoms and insulin resistance across five visits over 20 years of adulthood in the population-based Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. Possible differences based on population group (Black v. White participants), sex and years of education were tested. Depressive symptoms and insulin resistance were quantified using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale and the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), respectively. RESULTS Among 4044 participants (baseline mean age 34.9 ± 3.7 years, 53% women, 51% Black participants), HOMA-IR and CES-D traits were weakly correlated (r = 0.081, p = 0.002). Some occasion-specific correlations, but no cross-lagged associations were observed overall. Longitudinal dynamics of these relationships differed by population groups such that HOMA-IR at age 50 was associated with CES-D score at age 55 (β = 0.076, p = 0.038) in White participants only. Longitudinal dynamics were consistent between sexes and based on education. CONCLUSIONS The relationship between depressive symptoms and insulin resistance was best characterized by weak correlations between occasion-specific states and enduring traits, with weak evidence that insulin resistance might be temporally associated with subsequent depressive symptoms among White participants later in adulthood.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Depression in patients with diabetes mellitus is common and associated with poorer outcomes. This study aims to identify demographic, socioeconomic and medical factors associated with the initiation of antidepressant medication after a diagnosis of diabetes in adult patients without a previous prescription for antidepressants. We also examined frequency of primary care visits in the year after antidepressant initiation compared with the year before treatment began. METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study using routinely collected electronic medical record data spanning January 2011 to December 2019 from the University of Toronto Practice-based Research Network (UTOPIAN) Data Safe Haven. Our primary outcome was a first prescription for an antidepressant in patients with diabetes. We used a mixed-effects logistic regression model to identify sociodemographic and medical factors associated with this event. RESULTS Among 22,750 patients with diabetes mellitus, 3,055 patients (13.4%) began taking an antidepressant medication. Increased odds of antidepressant initiation were observed in younger patients (odds ratio [OR], 1.77; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39 to 2.26), females (OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.46 to 1.7), those receiving insulin treatment (OR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.43 to 1.78) and cases of polypharmacy (OR, 3.67; 95% CI, 3.29 to 4.11). There was an increase in the mean number of primary care visits from 4.6 to 5.9 per year after antidepressant initiation. CONCLUSIONS In patients with diabetes, age, sex and medical characteristics were associated with the initiation of antidepressants. These patients accessed primary care more frequently. Screening and prevention of depression, particularly in these subgroups, could reduce its personal and systemic burdens.

Abstract
Depression is a chronic illness that affects mood, physical health, and overall vitality and quality of life. Depression has been associated with an increased risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Therefore, this study aimed to compare the incidence of depression before and after endovascular treatment in patients with lower limb PAD. This is an important clinical issue considering the worldwide increase in PAD with the aging population and the known negative impact of depression on recovery. This was a retrospective sub-analysis of data from the Tokyo Peripheral Vascular Intervention Study using the TOMA-CODE registry. The presence and extent of depressive symptoms were evaluated using the patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9), with a depressive tendency score of ≥ 5. The PHQ-9 score was evaluated before endovascular treatment (EVT) and at 4 (± 1) weeks after EVT. The study population consisted of 87 patients who completed the PHQ-9 before EVT, with 76 completing the post-EVT PHQ-9. Of these 76, 19 had a pre-EVT score ≥ 5. Overall, there was no difference in the pre- and post-EVT scores (P = 0.091). There was no significant change in the 19 patients with a pre-EVT score ≥ 5 (mean 9.2 ± 4.4); however, there was a tendency to improve in the pre- to post-EVT score (mean, 6.9 ± 5.2; P = 0.059). Diabetes was a significant negative factor for pre- to post-EVT score improvement (P = 0.023). Overall, symptoms of depression showed the tendency to improve at 30 days post-EVT. However, diabetes was associated with lower improvement in symptoms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION People with diabetes mellitus (DM) have increased risk of depressive symptoms (DS) or anxious symptoms (AS). This study explores whether awareness of DM will contribute to prevalence of DS or AS. METHODS The baseline data including 81,717 adults from Southwest China was analyzed. DS and AS were assessed using PHQ-2 and GAD-2. Exposures were defined as 1) having self-reported physician diagnosis of diabetes (self-reported DM), 2) no prior diagnosis of diabetes but meeting diagnostic criteria (newly diagnosed DM), 3) having self-reported physician diagnosis or meeting criteria of non-diabetic diseases (non-diabetic patients), 4) healthy participants. Generalized linear mixed models were used to assess impact of presence and awareness of DM on DS or AS, adjusting for regional and individual related factors. RESULTS The prevalence of DS in self-reported DM, newly diagnosed DM, non-diabetic patient and healthy participants was 7.08 %, 4.30 %, 5.37 % and 3.17 %. The prevalence of AS was 7.80 %, 5.77 %, 6.37 % and 3.91 %. After adjusting for related factors, compared with healthy participants, self-reported DM and non-diabetic patients were associated with DS [AORDS, self-reported = 1.443(1.218,1.710), AORDS, nondiabetic patients = 1.265(1.143,1.400)], while the association between newly diagnosed DM and DS was not statistically significant. The associations between self-reported DM, newly diagnosed DM, non-diabetic patients and AS were all statistically significant. LIMITATIONS DS and AS were assessed through self-report and may suffer recall or information bias. CONCLUSIONS The association between awareness of diabetes and DS/AS suggests to pay attention to distinguish between self-reported and newly diagnosed DM and screening for DS and AS in diabetic population.

Abstract
The correlation between diabetes-related biomarkers and quality of life (QOL) remains unclear. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the correlation between diabetes-related biomarkers and QOL in a general Japanese population who underwent health checkups as a part of the Iwaki Health Promotion Project. Male and female participants aged ≥ 20 years from Iwaki District, Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture who participated in the 2019 medical evaluation were recruited. QOL was evaluated using the Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36). Fasting blood glucose, homeostatic model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), glycoalbumin, and plasma pentosidine were also evaluated as diabetes-related markers. Of the 1065 recruited participants, 1053 completed the clinical and QOL evaluations. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that upregulated diabetes-related markers levels were correlated with decreased SF-36 scores. Blood glucose, HOMA-IR, HbA1c, glycoalbumin, and plasma pentosidine levels were correlated with general health. Moreover, plasma pentosidine levels were correlated with role physical, social functioning, and role emotional in addition to general health. These results indicated that the levels of diabetes-related biomarkers, particularly the levels of plasma pentosidine, a glycation marker, were associated with QOL in our cohort.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing in China. Depression in patients with T2DM interferes with blood glucose management, leads to poor treatment outcomes, and has a high risk of dementia and cardiovascular event. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the prevalence of depression in patients with T2DM in China and explore potential risk factors associated with depression in T2DM. Methods We conducted a literature search in MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database (VIP), and the Wanfang Database from their inception to February 25, 2022 to include population-based, cross-sectional surveys that investigated the prevalence of depression in Chinese T2DM patients and studied possible risk factors. Gray literature and reference lists were also manually searched. We used the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality methodology checklist to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. Two reviewers screened studies, extracted data, and evaluated the risk of bias independently. The primary outcome was the pooled prevalence of depression in Chinese T2DM patients, and the secondary outcomes included potential risk factors for depression in T2DM patients. R (version 3.6.1) and Stata (version 12.0) software were used for data synthesis. Results We included 48 reports that identified 108,678 subjects. Among the included reports, 4 were rated as low risk of bias, 40 moderate risks of bias, and 4 high risks of bias. The prevalence of depression in T2DM patients in China was 25.9% (95% CI 20.6%-31.6%). The prevalence of depression was higher in women (OR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.19-1.54), subjects ≥60 years (OR = 1.56, 95% CI 1.14-2.14), with a primary school or lower education (vs. middle or high school education (OR = 1.49, 95% CI 1.16 - 1.92); vs. college degree or higher education (OR = 1.84, 95% CI 1.16 - 2.92), with a duration of T2DM ≥ 10 years (OR = 1.68, 95% CI 1.11-2.54), with complications (OR = 1.90, 95% CI 1.53-2.36), insulin users (OR = 1.46, 95% CI 1.09-1.96) and individuals living alone (OR = 2.26, 95% CI 1.71-2.98). T2DM patients with current alcohol use had a lower prevalence of depression (OR = 0.70, 95% CI 0.58-0.86). Prevalence varied from 0.8 to 52.6% according to different instruments used to detect depression. Conclusion The prevalence of depression in T2DM patients is remarkable in China. Potential risk factors of depression in T2DM patients included women, age ≥ 60 years, low educational level, complications, duration of diabetes ≥ 10 years, insulin use, and living alone. High-quality epidemiological investigations on the prevalence of depression in Chinese T2DM patients are needed to better understand the status of depression in T2DM. Abstract
There is an existing link between two of the most common diseases, obesity and depression. These are both of great public health concern, but little is known about the relationships between the subtypes of these conditions. We hypothesized that non-melancholic depressive symptoms have a stronger relationship with both body composition (lean mass and fat mass) and dysfunctional glucose metabolism than melancholic depression. For this cross-sectional study 1510 participants from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study had their body composition evaluated as lean mass and fat mass (Lean Mass Index [LMI, kg/m2] + Fat Mass Index [FMI kg/m2] = Body Mass Index). Participants were evaluated for depressive symptoms utilizing the Beck depression inventory, and had laboratory assessments including an oral glucose tolerance test. Higher than average FMI was associated with a higher percentage (mean [%], 95% CI) of participants scoring in the depressive range of the Beck depression inventory (20.2, 17.2–23.2) compared to those with low FMI (16.3, 13.8–18.9; p = 0.048) when adjusted for age, sex, education, and fasting plasma glucose concentration. Higher FMI was associated with a higher likelihood of having depressive symptoms (OR per 1-SD FMI = 1.37, 95% CI 1.13–1.65), whereas higher LMI was associated with a lower likelihood of having depressive symptoms (OR per 1-SD LMI = 0.76, 95% CI 0.64–0.91). Participants with an above average FMI more frequently (mean [%], 95% CI) had non-melancholic depressive symptoms (14.7, 11.8–17.7) as compared to those with low FMI (9.7, 7.6–11.9; p = 0.008) regardless of LMI levels. There was no difference between the body composition groups in the likelihood of having melancholic depressive symptoms. The non-melancholic group had higher (mean [kg/m2], SD) FMI (9.6, 4.1) than either of the other groups (BDI < 10: 7.7, 3.1; melancholic: 7.9, 3.6; p < 0.001), and a higher (mean [mmol/l], SD) 2-h glucose concentration (7.21, 1.65) than the non-depressed group (6.71, 1.70; p = 0.005). As hypothesized, non-melancholic depressive symptoms are most closely related to high fat mass index and dysfunctional glucose metabolism.

Abstract
Both type 2 diabetes and depression are common and are projected to increase. There is increasing evidence for a bidirectional relationship between the two. Diabetes is a risk factor for depression; contrariwise, individuals with depression are at greater risk of developing diabetes. They are a burden for both the individual and the society. Co-existent depression worsens diabetic control because of obesity, insulin resistance and the adverse metabolic effects of anti-diabetes medicines. In addition, compliance to lifestyle measures required for diabetes is also compromised such as following a specific diet, taking proper medications on time, getting metabolic parameters assessed and maintaining a sleep cycle. Depression occurs in many grades; mild depression is more common in diabetes than frank or full-blown depression leading to suicide. Unfortunately, there are not enough trained and accessible mental health professionals such as psychologists or psychiatrists to deal with the increasing burden of depression in diabetes. Therefore, alternate models for management of mild to moderate depression are required. There is evidence that a team-approach by employing health care assistants can lower the risk of cardiac risk factors. INtegrating DEPrEssioN and Diabetes treatmENT study was carried out to determine whether the team-approach using non-health care professionals could be effective in managing mild to moderate depression and to study its effects on metabolic parameters among subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The international study, carried out in four independent centers in India assessed the impact of a trained but not qualified non-psychiatrist in coordinating and forming a fulcrum between the patient, the family and the consultant endocrinologist/diabetologist. The interventions were fine-tuned to be culturally appropriate by qualitative interviews before they began. It was shown that the outcomes of both depression and diabetes could be improved by the employment of a clinical care coordinator. It is possible to scale up the studies to wider geographical areas and health-care organizations.

Background
Depression is a highly prevalent mental disorder with complex aetiology. An emerging body of evidence shows that depression tends to co-occur with abnormal blood glucose levels and dyslipidaemia. This study aimed to understand the overall and gender-specific associations of abnormal glucose levels and dyslipidaemia with depression in a single Mendelian population from rural Haryana, India. To achieve the aim, a population-based case-control study, which constituted of 251 depressed (cases) and 251 non-depressed (controls) individuals, was set up. The study was conducted among the Jat community of Palwal District, Haryana (North India). Data collection was done using a pre-tested interview schedule through the household survey method. Depression status was ascertained using Beck Depression Inventory-II. Fasting blood glucose analysis and lipid profiling were done using commercial kits (Randox, USA) through spectrophotometry. Statistical analysis was done using MS-Excel 2010 and SPSS version 16.0.
Results
In the present study, overall fasting blood sugar level was not found to be associated with depression. However, high blood sugar posed a 3.6-folds elevated risk for depression among females with borderline significance (p = 0.058). Further, higher levels of TC and LDL were found to be inversely associated with depression. In the sex-wise analysis inverse association of TC and LDL with depression remained significant among males but not among females. Instead, high TG and high VLDL showed an increased risk for depression in females.
Conclusions
This study suggests gender-specific associations of some of the studied biochemical variables with depression. Longitudinal studies are warranted to explicate cause-effect relationships between the studied biochemical variables and depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is growing in China. Depression is a significant complication of T2DM, leading to poor management of T2DM. Thus, early detection and treatment of depression in patients with T2DM are essential and effective. Therefore, we plan to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the prevalence of depression in Chinese patients with T2DM and explore potential risk factors of depression in T2DM. METHODS We will search literatures recorded in MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database (VIP), and WanFang Database from their inception onwards. We will manually search gray literatures, reference lists of identified studies, relevant websites, and consult experts in this field. We will include population-based, cross-sectional surveys that investigated the prevalence of depression in Chinese patients with T2DM or/and the possible risk factors of depression in T2DM. Two reviewers will screen studies, extract data, and evaluate risk of bias independently. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality methodology checklist will be used to assess the risk of bias. If feasible, we will conduct random effects meta-analysis of observational data to summarize the pooled prevalence, and use odds ratio for categorical data to explore potential risk factors. Prevalence estimates will be stratified according to age, gender, and other factors. Statistical heterogeneity will be estimated using Cochran's Q and I2 index. We will conduct meta-regression to investigate the potential sources of heterogeneity, sensitivity analyses to assess robustness of the synthesized results, and funnel plots and Egger's test to assess publication bias. DISCUSSION This systematic review and meta-analysis will provide comprehensive evidence of the prevalence and potential risk factors of depression in Chinese patients with T2DM. We expect to provide evidence for healthcare practitioners and policy makers to pay attention to the mental health of patients with T2DM. Our data will highlight the need and importance of early detection and intervention for depression in patients with T2DM. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION PROSPERO CRD42020182979.

Abstract
Aim To determine the 10-year cumulative incidence of high depressive symptoms in people with diagnosed and, in particular, previously undetected diabetes compared to those without diabetes in a population-based cohort study in Germany. Materials and Methods We included 2813 participants (52.9% men, mean age (SD) 58.9 (7.7) years, 7.1% diagnosed diabetes, 5.6% previously undetected diabetes) from the Heinz Nixdorf Recall study. We calculated the odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) using multiple logistic regression analyses for diagnosed and undetected diabetes. Results Cumulative 10-year incidences (95%-CI) of high depressive symptoms in participants with diagnosed diabetes, previously undetected diabetes, and without diabetes were 15.4% (10.7–21.2), 10.1% (5.9–15.9), and 12.4% (11.1–13.8), respectively. Age-sex-adjusted ORs were 1.51 (1.01–2.28) in participants with diagnosed diabetes compared to those without, 1.40 (0.92–2.12) after adjustment for BMI, physical activity, education, and smoking, and 1.33 (0.87–2.02) after further adjustment for stroke and myocardial infarction. ORs in participants with previously undetected diabetes were 0.96 (0.56–1.65), 0.85 (0.49–1.47), and 0.85 (0.49–1.48), respectively, and lower in men than in women. Conclusion As expected, we found an increased odds of developing high depressive symptoms in participants with diagnosed diabetes. However, the odds ratios decreased when we considered comorbidities and other covariates. Interestingly, in participants with previously undetected diabetes, the odds was not increased, even 10 years after detection of diabetes. These results support the hypothesis that high depressive symptoms develop due to diabetes-related burdens and comorbidities and not due to hyperglycemia or hyperinsulinemia.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate the relationship between newly diagnosed diabetes or prediabetes and depressive symptoms among individuals with risk factors for diabetes in China. We also investigated the associations of depressive symptoms with pancreatic β-cell function and insulin resistance. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from the Shanghai High-Risk Diabetic Screen (SHiDS) project. Between 2014 and 2017, a total of 1728 participants were enrolled in this study and underwent an oral glucose tolerance test to screen for diabetes and prediabetes. Insulin resistance was evaluated using the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance and the modified Matsuda index. Pancreatic β-cell function was calculated using the homeostatic model assessment of β-cell function, Stumvoll first- and second-phase indexes. Elevated depressive symptoms were determined using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10). RESULTS The prevalence of elevated depressive symptoms in the total study population was 4.8% (83 of 1728). Compared with the normal glucose tolerance group, individuals with newly diagnosed diabetes were less likely to have elevated depressive symptoms even after controlling for potential confounders [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 0.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.18-0.68; P = 0.002]. However, prediabetes was not associated with depressive symptoms. The odds for elevated depressive symptoms were increased in individuals with higher levels of the Stumvoll first-phase index. No association was observed between depressive symptoms and insulin resistance. CONCLUSION Elevated depressive symptoms were less prevalent in Chinese individuals with newly diagnosed diabetes among a high-risk population for diabetes.

Abstract
<b><i>Methodology:</i></b> Biochemically confirmed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients (<i>n</i> = 1,114) were recruited from the outpatient department of 2 tertiary care hospitals in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Face-to-face interview was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire containing sociodemographic parameters and relevant information about depression and diabetes. Biochemical test results and treatment-related information were taken from patients’ records. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used to screen all patients for psychiatric manifestation. Those diagnosed by HADS were subsequently reassessed using structured clinical interview for DSM-5 Disorders – Clinician Version. T2DM diagnosed at age <40 years were considered as early onset T2DM. Association between age of onset category and depression was assessed using multivariable mixed-effect logistic regression adjusting for random variation of the area of residence and plausible confounders. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Around a third of the participants (32.5%) were diagnosed with T2DM before the age of 40 years. Early onset T2DM patients were found to have 57% increase in the risk of developing depression (OR 1.57; 95% CI 1.13–2.28; <i>p</i> = 0.011) in comparison to those with usual onset T2DM (≥40 years). Among other factors a positive family history for diabetes (OR 1.33; 95% CI 1.03–1.78; <i>p</i> = 0.038), poor glycemic control (OR 1.31; 95% CI 1.03–1.68; <i>p</i> = 0.028), presence of 1, or more diabetic complications (OR 1.37; 95% CI 1.03–1.78; <i>p</i> = 0.011) also showed increased risk of depression. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> Early onset T2DM patients are at greater risk of developing depression. The finding is likely to help in setting preventive strategies aiming to reduce the presence of concomitant depression symptoms among diabetes.

Abstract
AIMS To conduct a systematic review in order to comprehensively synthesize the findings from a diverse range of genetically informative studies on comorbid depression and type 2 diabetes. METHODS Database searches (1 January 2008 to 1 June 2020) in PubMed and EMBASE were conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Eligible reports employed any type of genetically informed design, including twin modelling, Mendelian randomization, genome-wide association studies, polygenetic risk scores, or linkage disequilibrium score regression. Searches generated 451 unique citations, and 16 manuscripts met the inclusion criteria. RESULTS The included studies addressed three aetiological models of the depression-diabetes relationship: uni- or bi-directional phenotypic causation; shared genetic liability; or gene-environment interaction. From these studies, there is modest evidence that type 2 diabetes is causally related to risk of developing depression, but much more limited evidence that depression is causally related to risk of diabetes. There is little evidence of shared genetic liability between depression and diabetes or of gene-environment interaction. CONCLUSIONS Findings from genetically informed studies are mixed but provide some support for the uni- or bi-directional phenotypic model of depression and type 2 diabetes. Future studies should also explore the hypothesis that this relationship may be influenced by shared environmental risk factors. Findings can inform multifaceted approaches to diabetes prevention and care that reflect how psychosocial factors contribute to type 2 diabetes risk and outcomes.

Abstract
Background: Depression is a common mental illness. Previous studies suggested that health conditions and lifestyle factors were associated with depression. However, only few studies have explored the risk factors of depression in a large representative sample of the general population in the world. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in the 2006 survey and 2009 survey in Qingdao, China. The participants with insufficient information were excluded: Zung score, body mass index (BMI), diabetes items, physical activity, smoking, or drinking. Finally, a total of 3,300 participants were included in this analysis. The category of depression was used in the Zung self-rating depression scale (ZSDS). The associations between different indicators of health conditions (diabetic status, BMI), lifestyle factors (physical activity, smoking, and alcohol consumption), and depression were assessed by the logistic regression model. Results: The mean Zung scores for all participants, male participants, and female participants were 29.73 ± 7.57, 28.89 ± 7.30, 30.30 ± 7.70, respectively. In all participants, those who were pre-diabetes status (OR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.04-2.27), and irregular physical activity (OR: 0.39, 95% CI: 0.17-0.89) had an increased risk of depression. In man, the analysis showed an increased risk of depression those with pre-diabetes (OR: 2.49, 95% CI: 1.25-4.97), previously diagnosed diabetes (OR: 4.44, 95% CI: 1.58, 12.48), and in those irregular activities (OR: 0.07, 95% CI: 0.01-0.61). In women, those who were underweight (OR: 5.66, 95% CI: 1.04-30.71) had a greater risk of depression. Conclusions: These results suggested that health conditions and lifestyle factors were the potential risk factors for depression. Men with pre-diabetes, previously diagnosed diabetes, and irregular activity had an increased risk for depression; women with underweight status had a higher risk for depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a chronic non communicable disease. It is a growing public health concern with established links with a number of co-morbidities, including diabetes mellitus. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of depression at a population level, establish the depression sub-population phenotypic characteristics while exploring for links between depression and a spectrum of glycemic abnormalities. METHODS A nationally representative cross-sectional study was conducted in Malta between 2014 and 2016. Participants were categorized into different sub-populations according to their glycaemic status. Depression prevalence rates and phenotypic characteristics for each sub-population were established. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify links with depression. RESULTS Depression was prevalent in 17.15% (CI 95%: 16.01-18.36) with a female predominance. Those with known (as opposed to newly diagnosed) diabetes had the highest depression prevalence when compared to other glycemic sub-groups. These also exhibited a significant link with self-reported depression. However, at a population level, depression was mostly prevalent within the normoglycaemic sub-population. CONCLUSIONS The study confirms the strong link between diabetes and depression, especially, in a high risk dysglycaemic population. Of public health concern is the high depression occurrence within the normoglycaemic sub-population, which attributed for the majority of the Maltese population. In order to reduce the impact of mental health on the population, physicians may consider implementing depression screening clinical tools as part of their routine health check-ups at primary care level, irrespective of the glycaemic status of their patients.

Abstract
Given the rapid increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases in aging populations, this prospective study including 17 707 adults aged ≥45 years from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study was used to estimate the associations between chronic disease, multimorbidity, and depression among middle-aged and elderly adults in China, and explore the mediating factors. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10) questionnaire. Twelve chronic physical conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, cancer, chronic lung disease, liver disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney disease, arthritis or rheumatism, asthma, digestive disease were assessed. The prevalence rates for physical multimorbidity and depression (CES-D-10 ≥10) were 43.23% and 36.62%, respectively. Through multivariable logistic models and generalized estimating equation (GEE) models, we found all 12 chronic physical conditions, and multimorbidity were significantly associated with depression. Both mobility problems and chronic pain explained more than 30% of the association for all chronic conditions, with particularly high percentages for stroke (51.56%) and cancer (51.06%) in mobility problems and cancer (53.35%) in chronic pain. Limited activities of daily living (ADL) explained 34.60% of the stroke-cancer relationship, while sleep problems explained between 10.15% (stroke) and 14.89% (chronic lung disease) of the association. Individuals with chronic diseases or multimorbidity are significantly more likely to be depressed. Functional symptoms involving limitations of ADL and mobility difficulties mediated much of the association between chronic diseases and incident depression. These symptoms could be targeted for interventions to ameliorate the incidence of depression among individuals with chronic conditions.

Abstract
AIMS To examine the association of elevated depressive symptoms with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and determine whether these associations differ for those with and without diabetes. METHODS We included 22,807 black and white men and women aged 45-98 years at baseline (2003-2007) from the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study. Elevated depressive symptoms were defined as a score ≥ 4 on the 4-item Centers for Epidemiologic Studies of Depression Scale. Participants were classified as having diabetes, prediabetes, or no prediabetes/diabetes based on glucose levels and diabetes medication use. All-cause mortality events were available through 2018 and adjudicated CVD mortality events were available through 2015. RESULTS During follow-up, there were 5383 all-cause deaths, of which 1585 were adjudicated CVD deaths. The mean survival time was lower for participants with elevated depressive symptoms than those without elevated depressive symptoms for those with diabetes, prediabetes, and no prediabetes/diabetes. In multivariable adjusted models, elevated depressive symptoms increased the risk of all-cause mortality for those with diabetes (HR = 1.15; 95% CI = 1.00-1.32), prediabetes (HR = 1.56; 95% CI = 1.28-1.91), and neither prediabetes/diabetes (HR = 1.34; 95% CI = 1.19-1.50) (p for interaction = 0.0342). Findings were similar for CVD mortality. CONCLUSION Elevated depressive symptoms increased the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality among individuals with and without diabetes, with a stronger magnitude of association observed among those with prediabetes. This underscores the need for assessing depressive symptoms across the glycemic spectrum, including those with prediabetes.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic hyperglycemic condition due to progressively impaired glucose regulation. Momordica charantia L. could potentially improve hyperglycemia because its fruit extracts can alleviate insulin resistance, beta-cell dysfunction, and increase serum insulin level. We evaluated the effect of M. charantia L. in comparison with a vehicle on glycemic control in animal models of type 2 diabetes mellitus. MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, and CINAHL databases were searched without language restriction through April 2019. About 66 studies involving 1861 animals that examined the effect of M. charantia L. on type 2 diabetes mellitus were included. Fruits and seed extracts reduced fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and glycosylated hemoglobin A1c in comparison to vehicle control: (42 studies, 815 animals; SMD, -6.86 [95% CI; -7.95, -5.77], 3 studies, 59 animals; SMD; -7.76 [95% CI; -12.50, -3.01]) respectively. Also, the extracts have hepato-renal protective effects at varying doses and duration of administration. Despite the observed significant glycemic control effect, poor methodological quality calls for future researches to focus on standardizing extract based on chemical markers and adopt measures to improve the quality of preclinical studies such as sample size calculation, randomization, and blinding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies showed the relation of mental distress such as anxiety and depression to coronary vasoconstriction and myocardial ischemia. However, the mental health status of patients suspected to have vasospastic angina is unclear. METHODS A total of 99 patients underwent intracoronary acetylcholine (ACh) provocation tests for the diagnosis of vasospastic angina and mental health assessment using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y (STAI Y-2). Patients with binary GHQ-12 ≥ 4 were defined as having poor mental health. RESULTS Median GHQ-12 and STAI Y-2 were 3 [1, 6] and 44 [36, 50]. Forty-one (41%) patients had binary GHQ-12 ≥ 4, and 48 (48%) had positive ACh provocation tests. The number of provoked vasospasms and rate of electrocardiographic change and chest pain during ACh tests were not significantly different between patients with and without GHQ-12 ≥ 4. The incidence of positive ACh provocation test was similar between the two groups (49% vs. 48%, p = 1.00). The multivariable analysis indicated that younger age, no history of percutaneous coronary intervention and no diabetes mellitus were factors associated with higher GHQ-12 and/or STAI Y-2 scores. CONCLUSIONS More than 40% of patients who underwent ACh provocation tests had poor mental condition. No impact of mental distress on positive ACh tests was found in this study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association between undiagnosed impaired fasting glucose (UIFG) and diabetes (UD), their risk factors and the patients' knowledge about diabetes and their quality of life (QOL). METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted between May and September 2017 in four laboratories enrolling 495 patients. We used the Diabetes Knowledge and SF-12 questionnaires to assess the patients' knowledge about diabetes and QOL. This study meets the Wilson and Jungner criteria for disease screening. RESULTS A higher knowledge score (ORa = 0.85) was significantly associated with the absence of diabetes compared to UPD, whereas an increased age (ORa = 1.2) and a positive family history of diabetes (ORa = 1.81) were significantly associated with higher odds of UPD. An increased knowledge score (ORa = 0.55) was significantly associated with an absence of diabetes compared to UD, whereas an increased BMI (ORa = 1.40) and an increased age (ORa = 1.07) were associated with increased odds of having UD.UD (Beta = -5.799) was significantly associated with decreased total physical component QOL score, whereas increased diabetes knowledge score (Beta = 0.415) was significantly associated with increased physical QOL. A higher diabetes knowledge score (Beta = 0.459) were associated with increased mental QOL. CONCLUSION Seeing the relatively high percentage of UD and UIFG, we propose that screening should be considered and subject to proper assessment in the light of the findings of this study.

Abstract
AIMS To identify communication cycles patients use to make sense of a diabetes diagnosis and barriers patients encounter in their sensemaking process. METHODS Researchers conducted interviews with 33 participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus or prediabetes at medical centers in Georgia and Nevada. A thematic analysis using the constant comparative method identified communication cycles. RESULTS Patients reported engaging three communication cycles to make sense of the diagnosis: (1) interacting with healthcare clinicians; (2) seeking information online; and (3) taking a nutrition/diabetes management class. Patients reported system-level barriers that impact sensemaking: (1) lack of consistent or routine care; and (2) lack of access to resources. CONCLUSION Results here reinforce the theoretical proposition that receiving a diagnosis is an equivocal process that requires patients to make sense of new information through communication cycles. Patients in this sample repeatedly described communication cycles to interpret this new information rather than relying on assembly rules. Clinicians can promote patient understanding of diabetes and self-management by taking time to explain the diagnosis, maintaining consistent care, providing guidance to online sources, and ensuring patients have access to diabetes education.

Abstract
This narrative review of the literature provides a summary and discussion of 25 years of research into the complex links between depression and diabetes. Systematic reviews have shown that depression occurs more frequently in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes compared with people without diabetes. Currently, it remains unclear whether depression is also more common in people with impaired glucose metabolism or undiagnosed type 2 diabetes compared with people without diabetes. More prospective epidemiological research into the course of depression and an exploration of mechanisms in individuals with diabetes are needed. Depression in diabetes is associated with less optimal self-care behaviours, suboptimal glycaemic control, impaired quality of life, incident micro- and macrovascular diseases, and elevated mortality rates. Randomized controlled trails concluded that depression in diabetes can be treated with antidepressant medication, cognitive-behavioural therapy (individual, group-based or web-based), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and stepped care. Although big strides forward have been made in the past 25 years, scientific evidence about depression in diabetes remains incomplete. Future studies should investigate mechanisms that link both conditions and test new diabetes-specific web- or app-based interventions for depression in diabetes. It is important to determine whether treatment or prevention of depression prevents future diabetes complications and lowers mortality rates.

Abstract
Diabetes-related diseases (DRDs), especially cancers pose a big threat to public health. Although people have explored pathological pathways of a few common DRDs, there is a lack of systematic studies on important biological processes (BPs) connecting diabetes and its related diseases/cancers. We have proposed and compared 10 protein-protein interaction (PPI)-based computational methods to study the connections between diabetes and 254 diseases, among which a method called DIconnectivity_eDMN performs the best in the sense that it infers a disease rank (according to its relation with diabetes) most consistent with that by literature mining. DIconnectivity_eDMN takes diabetes-related genes, other disease-related genes, a PPI network, and genes in BPs as input. It first maps genes in a BP into the PPI network to construct a BP-related subnetwork, which is expanded (in the whole PPI network) by a random walk with restart (RWR) process to generate a so-called expanded modularized network (eMN). Since the numbers of known disease genes are not high, an RWR process is also performed to generate an expanded disease-related gene list. For each eMN and disease, the expanded diabetes-related genes and disease-related genes are mapped onto the eMN. The association between diabetes and the disease is measured by the reachability of their genes on all eMNs, in which the reachability is estimated by a method similar to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test. DIconnectivity_eDMN achieves an area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.71 for predicting both Type 1 DRDs and Type 2 DRDs. In addition, DIconnectivity_eDMN reveals important BPs connecting diabetes and DRDs. For example, "respiratory system development" and "regulation of mRNA metabolic process" are critical in associating Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and many Type 1 DRDs. It is also found that the average proportion of diabetes-related genes interacting with DRDs is higher than that of non-DRDs.

Abstract
To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of longitudinal studies assessing the bi-directional association between depression and diabetes macrovascular and microvascular complications. Embase, Medline and PsycINFO databases were searched from inception through 27 November 2017. A total of 4592 abstracts were screened for eligibility. Meta-analyses used multilevel random/mixed-effects models. Quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Twenty-two studies were included in the systematic review. Sixteen studies examined the relationship between baseline depression and incident diabetes complications, of which nine studies involving over one million participants were suitable for meta-analysis. Depression was associated with an increased risk of incident macrovascular (HR = 1.38; 95% CI: 1.30-1.47) and microvascular disease (HR = 1.33; 95% CI: 1.25-1.41). Six studies examined the association between baseline diabetes complications and subsequent depression, of which two studies involving over 230 000 participants were suitable for meta-analysis. The results showed that diabetes complications increased the risk of incident depressive disorder (HR = 1.14; 95% CI: 1.07-1.21). The quality analysis showed increased risk of bias notably in the representativeness of selected cohorts and ascertainment of exposure and outcome. Depression in people with diabetes is associated with an increased risk of incident macrovascular and microvascular complications. The relationship between depression and diabetes complications appears bi-directional. However, the risk of developing diabetes complications in depressed people is higher than the risk of developing depression in people with diabetes complications. The underlying mechanisms warrant further research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that depression is more common in patients with diabetes than in the general population. However, contradictory results expose controversy in this association. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between diabetes and depression in a national sample of Venezuelan adults. METHODS The EVESCAM was a national population-based, cross-sectional, randomized cluster sampling study, which assessed 3,454 adults from July 2014 to January 2017 (response rate of 77.3%). Diabetes was defined using fasting blood glucose and a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test. Depressive symptoms were determined using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. RESULTS 3255 subjects were assessed. Depressive symptom score was different between genders and among age groups (p<0.001), and similar in those subjects with or without diabetes (p=0.899). Depressive symptoms prevalence was higher in women than in men and increased with age (p<0.05), but was similar in those with and without diabetes (p=0.215). Using a multivariate regression analysis model, the association of depressive symptoms and diabetes remains non-significant after adjusting for age and gender (Odds ratio=0.98; 95% Confidence Intervals 0.95 - 1.02, p=0.504). CONCLUSION Diabetes and depression were not associated in a large sample of Venezuelan adults.

Prevalence for and Factors Associated With Depression and Anxiety Symptoms in Mexican Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis. J Clin Rheumatol 2019; 26:S111-S115. Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE It has been suggested that patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often present depression and anxiety. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms in Mexican patients with RA and to determine associated factors of depression and anxiety in this population. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study. We evaluated demographic characteristics, medical comorbidities, substance use, and disease characteristics in 103 patients with RA. Patients were enrolled from March 2016 to August 2017 The prevalence of depression and anxiety was estimated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. We calculated the proportion of depression and anxiety symptoms and compared characteristics between groups. Finally, logistic regression model was used to determine the factors associated with depression and anxiety. RESULTS Depression symptoms were present in 26.2% of patients, whereas anxiety symptoms were present in 16.5% of patients. Presence of hypertension was an associated factor with depression (odds ratio [OR], 3.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06-9.23; p = 0.03). Low socioeconomic (OR, 3.78; 95% CI, 1.39-10.28; p = 0.009) and high scores of 28-joint Disease Activity Score were associated with anxiety (OR, 3.19; 95% CI, 1.20-8.45; p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS Factor related to socioeconomic conditions, comorbid medical conditions, and disease activity were related to the presence of clinical depression and anxiety in Mexican patients with RA, which may have a negative impact in the course and outcome of the disease. We suggest an early identification of depression and anxiety in these patients through an early psychiatric evaluation.
