Abstract
Objective To evaluate whether or not immunization against COVID-19 is associated with changes in the duration and frequency of the menstrual cycle. Methods This prospective analysis included the menstrual cycle data of 154 females after COVID-19 vaccination from August 2021 to March 2022. This study included Pakistani females aged 18 to 45 years and who had taken at-least one dose of COVID-19 vaccination. After two months of COVID vaccine the participants were interviewed again about the timing and duration of their menstrual cycle. The increase in menstrual length for >eight days was labelled as increased menstrual cycle duration. Results Mean age of participants was 33.53±8.52 years. Among 154, 113 (73.4%) were married. Among 154 females, menstrual abnormality was reported by 59 (38.3%) females, increase in cycle duration was reported by 25 (16.2%) patients and decrease by 22 (14.3%), increase in number of bleeding days by 20 (13%) females and decrease by 15 (9.7%), increase in pain intensity was reported by 19 (12.3%) females and decrease by 17 (11.0%), increased intensity of blood flow was reported by 20 (13.0%) patients and decreased intensity by 19 (12.3%) females. Conclusion COVID-19 vaccination is not associated with menstrual abnormalities in a significant number of females.

Abstract
The clinical data from 118 CTD patients with bronchiectasis were collected and categorized into two groups: pulmonary infection present (n = 67) and absent (n = 51), for comparative analysis of characteristics and risk factors. Then, we analyzed and compared their demographics, disease characteristics, and risk factors for infection. Among the whole cohort (n = 118), the incidence of pulmonary infections was 56.78%. The occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and vasculitis was found to be associated with an increased risk of pulmonary infection. Sputum culture identified Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae as the predominant pathogens in the infected group. Notably, symptoms such as joint pains (p = 0.018) and morning stiffness (p = 0.017) were significantly more common in the infected group compared to the noninfected group. Moreover, our findings revealed that elevated levels of C-reactive protein and complement C3, along with bronchial expansion observed on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), were significant independent factors in the infection group. Conversely, pulmonary interstitial changes identified through HRCT (OR: 0.135, 95% CI: 0.030-0.612, p = 0.009) were significantly associated with the non-infection group. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into managing CTD patients with bronchiectasis, emphasizing early detection and tailored approaches to prevent and treat pulmonary infections for better outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite great scientific efforts, understanding the role of COVID-19 clinical biomarkers remains a challenge. METHODS A cross-sectional descriptive study in two Peruvian cities at different altitudes for comparison: Lima and Huaraz. In each place, three groups were formed, made up of 25 patients with COVID-19 in the ICU, 25 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 who did not require the ICU, and 25 healthy subjects as a control group. Five biomarkers were measured: IL-6, hepcidin, ferritin, C-reactive protein, and zinc using ELISA assays. RESULTS Ferritin, C-reactive protein, and IL-6 levels were significantly higher in the ICU and non-ICU groups at both study sites. In the case of hepcidin, the levels were significantly higher in the ICU group at both study sites compared to the non-ICU group. Among the groups within each study site, the highest altitude area presented statistically significant differences between its groups in all the markers evaluated. In the lower altitude area, differences were only observed between the groups for the zinc biomarker. CONCLUSION COVID-19 patients residing at high altitudes tend to have higher levels of zinc and IL-6 in all groups studied compared to their lower altitude counterparts.

Abstract
Background/purpose It is known that COVID-19 patients show many clinical oral symptoms due to the immunological mechanisms triggered by the virus. Aim of this study is to analyze the antibody response to SARS-CoV-2, and to evaluate the oral health status of hospitalized patients. Materials and methods 160 patients with COVID-19 confirmed by SARS-CoV-2-specific RT-PCR testing and 160 healthy volunteers (HI) with similar age, gender and systemic status were included to compare the bio-chemical and oral manifestations. Oropharyngeal swab specimens were collected to evaluate the salivary interleukins (IL-1, IL-6, IL-10) and immunoglobulins (sIgA, sIgG, sIgM). Oral findings (DMFT, plaque index, salivary flow rate), socio-demographic information and systemic conditions were also recorded. Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U and Spearman's ratio tests were applied to determine the possible correlations between the factors (P = 0.05). Results The mean DMFT scores of COVID-19 patients (12.71 ± 7.3) were significantly higher than the HI (7.39 ± 2.8), whereas cases of total or partial edentulism were more common among COVID-19 patients (P < 0.05). While plaque index scores were similar for both groups (P > 0.05), salivary parameters were found statistically different (P < 0.05). Severe and moderate cases showed higher proinflammatory interleukin levels (IL-1 = 68.74 pg/ml, IL-6 = 53.31 pg/ml) amongst all (P < 0.05). While secretory immunoglobulins were almost depleted at baseline, (sIgA = 0.11 mg/ml, sIgG = 0.21 mg/ml, sIgM = 0.08 mg/ml) they reached to threshold levels after 4 weeks. Conclusion Higher proinflammatory interleukin levels indicated that traces of ongoing "Cytokine Storm" in COVID-19 patients which can also be observed in oral environment. Poor oral hygiene and malnutrition due to edentulism can pave the way for having a severe COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
Immune system imbalances contribute to the pathogenesis of several different diseases, and immunotherapy shows great therapeutic efficacy against tumours and infectious diseases with immune-mediated derivations. In recent years, molecules targeting the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) immune checkpoint have attracted much attention, and related signalling pathways have been studied clearly. At present, several inhibitors and antibodies targeting PD-1 have been utilized as anti-tumour therapies. However, increasing evidence indicates that PD-1 blockade also has different degrees of adverse side effects, and these new explorations into the therapeutic safety of PD-1 inhibitors contribute to the emerging concept that immune normalization, rather than immune enhancement, is the ultimate goal of disease treatment. In this review, we summarize recent advancements in PD-1 research with regard to immune normalization and targeted therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 is an infectious disease characterized by a severe catabolic and inflammatory state, leading to loss of muscle mass. The assessment of muscle mass can be useful to identify nutritional risk and assist in early management, especially in older adults who have high nutritional risks. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of calf circumference (CC) with clinical and biochemical markers and mortality in older adults with COVID-19 admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in a public hospital. CC was adjusted for body mass index (BMI), reducing 3, 7, or 12 cm for a BMI of 25-29.9, 30-39.9, and ≥40 kg/m2, respectively, and classified as reduced when <33 cm for women and <34 cm for men. Pearson's correlation between BMI and CC was performed to assess the association between variables. Regression analysis was adjusted for sex, age, and BMI variables. Cox regression was used to assess survival related to CC. RESULTS A total of 208 older adults diagnosed with COVID-19 admitted to ICU were included, of which 84% (n = 176) were classified as having reduced CC. These patients were older, with lower BMI, higher nutritional risk, malnourished, and higher concentration of urea and urea-creatinine ratio (UCR) compared with the group with normal CC. There was an association between edematous patients at nutritional risk and malnourished with reduced CC in the Cox regression, either adjusted or not for confounding. CONCLUSIONS CC was not associated with severity, biochemical markers, or mortality in older adults with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU, but it was associated with moderately malnourished patients assessed by subjective global assessment (SGA).

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has been associated with numerous complications, including autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. The surge of cytokines following COVID-19 infection or vaccination has been proposed to contribute to immune dysregulation, which might subsequently give rise to an autoinflammatory syndrome. Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is one of the rare autoinflammatory diseases characterized by a surge of cytokines. Although an association between COVID-19 vaccines and AOSD has been reported, an association with COVID-19 infection or nirmatrelvir/ritonavir remains very rare. In this case, we present a patient who developed AOSD after COVID-19 infection and subsequent treatment with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. After the initial response to glucocorticoids, canakinumab was initiated, resulting in positive clinical outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Growing evidence exists about post-COVID condition/syndrome as sequelae of Sars-CoV-2 infection in healed patients, possibly involving the lungs, brain, kidney, cardiovascular and neuromuscular system, as well the persistency of taste dysfunction. Such symptoms develop during or after infection and continue for more than 12 weeks with pathogenesis related to virus persistency but variable by organs or systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS We recently observed six patients recovered from COVID-19 and with negative RT-PCR testing, showing oral mucosa lesions (mainly ulcers) overlapping those occurring in the acute phase, persisting up to 20 days and thus needing a biopsy with histological investigation and spike protein evaluation by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS We found epithelial ulceration, inflammatory infiltrate, vessels with increased diameter and flattened endothelium but no thrombi formation; also, we found a weak epithelial SARS-CoV-2 positivity limited to the basal/spinosum layers, progressively decreasing toward the periphery, and the intraepithelial lymphomonocytes, endothelium, and perivascular pericytes too. CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide evidence that SARS-CoV-2 can persist, as for other organs/systems, also in the oral epithelium/mucosa after the acute phase and can be responsible for lesions, although by a pathogenetic mechanism that should be better defined but certainly referable as the oral mucosa counterpart of post-COVID syndrome.

Abstract
Mast cells (MC) are ubiquitous in the body, and they are critical for not only in allergic diseases but also in immunity and inflammation, including having potential involvement in the pathophysiology of dysautonomias and neuroinflammatory disorders. MC are located perivascularly close to nerve endings and sites such as the carotid bodies, heart, hypothalamus, the pineal gland, and the adrenal gland that would allow them not only to regulate but also to be affected by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). MC are stimulated not only by allergens but also many other triggers including some from the ANS that can affect MC release of neurosensitizing, proinflammatory, and vasoactive mediators. Hence, MC may be able to regulate homeostatic functions that seem to be dysfunctional in many conditions, such as postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, and Long-COVID syndrome. The evidence indicates that there is a possible association between these conditions and diseases associated with MC activation. There is no effective treatment for any form of these conditions other than minimizing symptoms. Given the many ways MC could be activated and the numerous mediators released, it would be important to develop ways to inhibit stimulation of MC and the release of ANS-relevant mediators.

Abstract
Background Coinfection poses a persistent threat to global public health due to its severe effect on individual-level infection risk and disease outcome. Coinfection of SARS-CoV2 with one or more pathogens has been documented. Nevertheless, this virus co-infected with the Hantaan virus (HTNV) is rarely reported. Case summary Here, we presented three cases of HTNV complicated with SARS-CoV2 infection. Not only the conditions including general clinical manifestations, immune and inflammation parameters fluctuation presented in the single infection of HTNV or SARS-CoV2 can be found, but also the unexpected manifestations have attracted our attention that presented as more symptoms of HTNV infection including exudative changes in both lungs and an amount of bilateral pleural effusion as well as bilateral kidney enlargement rather than typical viral pneumonia in SARS-CoV2 infection. Fortunately, the conditions of patients gradually return to normal which is beneficial from the antiviral treatment, hemodialysis, and various supportive therapies including anti-inflammation, liver and gastric mucosa protection. Conclusion Unexpected manifestations of coinfection patients present herein may be associated with multiple factors including virus load, competition or antagonism among antigens, and the susceptibility of target cells to the various pathogens, even though the pathogenesis of HTNV and SARS-CoV2 remains to be elucidated. Given that these two viruses have posed a profound influence on the socioeconomic, healthcare system worldwide, and the threat of coinfection to public health, it is warranted for clinicians, public health authorities, and infectious disease researchers to have a high index of consideration for patients co-infected with HTNV and SARS-CoV2.

Abstract
In this study, the efficacy of sublingual squalene in decreasing the mortality rate among patients with COVID-19 was investigated. Squalene was extracted from pumpkin seed oil with a novel method. Then, the microemulsion form of squalene was prepared for sublingual usage. In the clinical study, among 850 admitted patients, 602 eligible COVID-19 patients were divided in two groups of control (N = 301) and cases (N = 301) between Nov 2021 and Jan 2022. Groups were statistically the same in terms of age, sex, BMI, lymphocyte count on 1st admission day, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, chronic respiratory disease, immunosuppressive disease, and required standard treatments. The treatment group received five drops of sublingual squalene every 4 h for 5 days plus standard treatment, while the control group received only standard treatment. Patients were followed up for 30 days after discharge from the hospital. The sublingual form of squalene in the microemulsion form was associated with a significant decrease in the mortality rate (p < 0.001), in which 285 (94.7%) cases were alive after one month while 245 (81.4%) controls were alive after 1 month of discharge from the hospital. In addition, squalene appears to be effective in preventing re-hospitalization due to COVID-19 (p < 0.001), with 141 of controls (46.8%) versus 58 cases (19.3%). This study suggests sublingual squalene in the microemulsion as an effective drug for reducing mortality and re-hospitalization rates in COVID-19 patients.Trial Registration Number: IRCT20200927048848N3.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 pneumonia is associated with SIRS and hypercatabolism. The aim of this study was to determine muscle loss during the acute phase of COVID-19 pneumonia and evaluate long-term sequelae in discharged patients. METHODS A total of 16 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and respiratory insufficiency were included in the study. Selected parameters (weight, BMI, LBM = lean body mass, albumin, CRP, NLR = neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, ultrasound measured thickness of rectus femoris muscle = US RF and rectus femoris + vastus intermedius = US RF + VI, handgrip strength, quality of life = EQ-5D questionnaire, and activities of daily living = Barthel's ADLs) were recorded on admission, discharge, and 1, 3, and 6 months after discharge. RESULTS The most significant changes were between hospital admission and discharge: US RF and RF + VI (-1.28 ± 1.97 mm, p = 0.046; -1.76 ± 2.94 mm, p = 0.05), EQ-5D score (14.6 ± 19.2, p = 0.02), and ADLs (17.1 ± 22.6; p = 0.02). There was a significant positive correlation between US RF + VI and handgrip strength (p = 0.014) and a negative correlation between weight and Barthel index (p = 0.012). There was an association between muscle function with an EQ-5D score and ADLs during outpatient check-ups, most noticeably between handgrip strength, US RF+VI, and ADLs (p = 0.08; p = 0.1, respectively). Conclusions: In patients with COVID-19 pneumonia, there is a significant reduction of health-related quality of life, impaired even 6 months after hospital discharge, influenced mainly by muscle loss. During the hospital stay, there was a significant muscle mass reduction. Ultrasound measurement of thigh muscle thickness may be a useful method to monitor muscle loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diet and dietary supplements aim to add trace elements, vitamins, and minerals to the body to improve human health and boost the immune system. In the previous few years, the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus strain has been threatening the health of individuals and public health more broadly, with rates of intensive care unit cases on the rise, while long-term COVID-19 complications are persisting until today. In the peculiar circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, in combination with disease prevention techniques, the strengthening of the immune system is considered particularly important to enable it to effectively respond to and eliminate the SARS-CoV-2 viral pathogen in the event of infection. The purpose of the current literature review is to thoroughly summarize and critically analyze the current clinical data concerning the potential beneficial effects of diet and dietary supplements against COVID-19 infection risk and symptoms' severity. The micronutrients/supplements examined in this study in relation to COVID-19 infection are vitamins A, B, C, and D, zinc, selenium, magnesium, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, glutamine, resveratrol, beta-glucans, and probiotics. The potential effects of dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet against SARS-CoV-2 infection risk and symptoms' severity were also analyzed. Our literature review suggests that micro- and macronutrient supplementation and a healthy diet and lifestyle may provide support to immune system function, with beneficial effects both before and during SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, additional studies are recommended to draw safe conclusions and formulate dietary recommendations concerning dietary supplements and their possible effects on preventing and co-treating COVID-19 disease.

Abstract
The oral cavity is a niche for diverse microbes, including viruses. Members of the Herpesviridae family, comprised of dsDNA viruses, as well as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), an ssRNA virus, are among the most prevalent viruses infecting the oral cavity, and they exhibit clinical manifestations unique to oral tissues. Viral infection of oral mucosal epithelia triggers an immune response that results in prolonged inflammation. The clinical and systemic disease manifestations of HHV have been researched extensively, and several recent studies have illuminated the relationship between HHV and oral inflammatory diseases. Burgeoning evidence suggests the oral manifestation of SARS-CoV-2 infection includes xerostomia, dysgeusia, periodontal disease, mucositis, and opportunistic viral and bacterial infections, collectively described as oral post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC). These diverse sequelae could be a result of intensified immune responses initially due to the copious production of proinflammatory cytokines: the so-called "cytokine storm syndrome", facilitating widespread oral and non-oral tissue damage. This review explores the interplay between HHV, SARS-CoV-2, and oral inflammatory diseases such as periodontitis, endodontic disease, and peri-implantitis. Additionally, the review discusses proper diagnostic techniques for identifying viral infection and how viral diagnostics can lead to improved overall patient health.

Abstract
Cytokines are signaling molecules involved in inflammation process. Interleukin (IL)-6 is one of pivotal inflammatory cytokines associated with many human diseases. Therefore, there are on-going efforts to find a therapeutic to inhibit IL-6 and other cytokines. Methyl 2-[3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)prop-2-enoylamino]-3-phenylpropanoate (MHPAP) is a phenolic amide ester, transported better than its non-ester form (NEF) in monocyte/macrophage-like cells. However, there is no information about the effects of their cell permeability on cytokines. Therefore, the effects of MHPAP and NEF on cytokines were investigated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated THP-1 and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). In the THP-1 cells, MHPAP significantly inhibited IL-6, IL-1beta, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha (P < 0.05), but NEF showed no effects. MHPAP also inhibited nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) p65 phosphorylation in the THP-1 cells (P < 0.05), without significant effects on c-FOS, ATF-2, and JUN phosphorylations. Because NF-κB p65 is phosphorylated by IκB kinase (IKK), in silico analysis was performed on IKK. MHPAP was found to bind to IKK better than an IKK inhibitor ((E)-2-fluoro-4'-methoxystilbene). Furthermore, MHPAP inhibited the luminescence increased in the LPS-stimulated NF-κB-Luc2 THP-1 cells. As anticipated, MHPAP was also found to inhibit IL-6, IL-1beta, IL-8, and TNF-alpha significantly in LPS-stimulated PBMCs (P < 0.05). Especially, MHPAP inhibited IL-6 and IL-1beta with an IC50 of 0.85 and 0.87 µM, better than IL-8 (1.58 µM) and TNF-alpha (1.22 µM) in the cells. Altogether, the data suggest that cell permeability may have a significant impact on MHPAP's ability to inhibit cytokines and MHPAP may be used as a potent cell-permeable compound to inhibit inflammatory cytokines in monocyte/macrophage-like cells. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Potential effects of MHPAP and NEF on inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, IL-1beta, and TNF-alpha) were investigated in LPS-stimulated THP-1 and PBMCs. Cell transport had a great impact on cytokine inhibition in the cells. MHPAP was also found to inhibit NF-κB pathway, which was supported by in silico and NF-κB reporter (Luc)-THP-1 data. Also, in LPS-stimulated PBMCs, MHPAP significantly inhibited IL-6, IL-1beta, IL-8, and TNF-alpha, suggesting that MHPAP may be a potent cell-permeable compound to inhibit inflammatory cytokines in monocyte/macrophage-like cells.

Abstract
The H9N2 subtype of the avian influenza virus (AIV) is one of the main subtypes of low pathogenic AIV, and it seriously affects the poultry breeding industry. Currently, vaccination is still one of China's main strategies for controlling H9N2 avian influenza. In this study, we selected MW548848.1 on the current popular main branch h9.4.2.5 as the reference strain, and we optimized the amino acid sequence of HA1 to make it suitable for expression in Bacillus subtilis. The B. subtilis expression vector showed good safety and stress resistance; therefore, this study constructed a recombinant B. subtilis expressing H9N2 HA1 protein and evaluated its immunogenicity in mice. The following results were obtained: the sIgA level of HA1 protein in small intestine fluid and the IgG level of PHT43-HA1/B. subtilis in serum were significantly improved (P < 0.01); PHT43-HA1/B. subtilis can cause a special immune response in mice; and cytokine detection interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) (P < 0.05) and Interleukin 2 (IL-2) (P < 0.01) expressions significantly increased. Additionally, the study found that PHT43-HA1/B. subtilis can alleviate the attack of H9N2 AIV in the spleen, lungs, and small intestine of mice. This study was the first to use an oral recombinant B. subtilis-HA1 vaccine candidate, and it provides theoretical data and technical reference for the creation of a new live vector vaccine against H9N2 AIV.

Abstract
Purpose: There is a paucity of evidence on the impact of immune-mediated inflammatory disease (IMID) treatments on the immunogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. The purpose of this literature review is to address the question of whether patients with IMIDs receiving secukinumab, a fully human anti-interleukin-17A monoclonal antibody, have an adequate immune response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Materials and Methods: Clinical studies that evaluated the effect of secukinumab on immune responses in patients with IMIDs after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination were searched in publication databases, including Medline and Embase, until May 2022. Results: From the 53 articles identified, a total of 11 articles were included. Overall, the majority of the patients treated with secukinumab elicited an adequate immune response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. Patients receiving secukinumab for IMIDs developed cellular immune responses following vaccination with the BNT162b2 vaccine, and there were no significant differences in the overall humoral and cellular immune responses between patients and healthy individuals. The third dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine resulted in a positive antibody response in secukinumab-treated patients. Conclusion: The available data provide no evidence of impairment in immunological response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines by secukinumab in patients with IMIDs.

Abstract
Introduction/Case report We describe the case of a 6-month-old female infant who received the equivalent of 6 adult doses of the COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine due to an immunization error. The patient underwent clinical and laboratory evaluations from the time of vaccination error (January 2022) until November 2022. In the first three days after immunization, she presented with low-grade fever (38 °C) and mild pain and induration at the injection site. She showed no other symptoms afterwards. Laboratory tests were within normal limits for age, except for an elevated D-dimer (3.71 ug/mL; normal: up to 0.5 ug/mL) and as the echocardiogram and electrocardiogram were within normal limits as well, no interventions were instituted at that moment. On the tenth day, immune response evaluation showed a strong expression of cytokines related to the Th2 profile and a well-controlled inflammatory state. Forty-three days after the vaccine administration inflammation status remained, with a predominance of cellular immune response, IFN-γ expression increased compared to the previous evaluation, and a robust antiviral state was in place. After 90 days, immune response evaluation showed a significant reduction in the inflammatory state, still with a predominance of the cellular immune response. Clinically, the patient remained well, with no other noteworthy intercurrences, until the last appointment in November 2022. This child has had no evidence of a severe adverse effect associated to the vaccine overdose. Conclusion The close follow-up of this case of vaccination error demonstrated that the COVID-19 Pfizer was safe and immunogenic in this individual, noting careful monitoring and followup of these vaccine administration errors is crucial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has led to unfavorable disruptions to daily living routines by exerting deleterious effects on several aspects of human mental and physical health and quality of life worldwide. The purpose of the current survey is to explore the potential association of COVID-19 infection with multiple sociodemographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle factors of community-dwelling older adults. METHODS This is a cross-sectional survey including 5197 older adults aged over 65 years old from 10 geographically diverse regions of Greece. Relevant questionnaires were used to record study the population sociodemographic factor, while anthropometric parameters were also measured. Validated questionnaires were also applied to assess several lifestyle factors such as depression, anxiety, stress, cognitive status, sleep quality, health-related quality of life, physical activity levels, and Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence. RESULTS In multivariate regression analysis, COVID-19 infection was significantly, independently related with urban residence (p = 0.0107), regular smoking (p = 0.0218), overweight status and obesity (p = 0.0036), as well as abdominal obesity (p = 0.0008), higher risk of depression (p = 0.0027), anxiety (p = 0.0045), stress (p = 0.0038), inadequate sleep quality (p = 0.0108), lower physical activity levels (p = 0.0012), reduced MD compliance (p = 0.0009), and poor health-related quality of life (p = 0.0002). In univariate analysis, older adults' age (p = 0.0001), male gender (p = 0.0015), living alone (p = 0.0023), lower educational and economic level (p = 0.0175 and p = 0.0294, respectively), and cognition decline (p = 0.0032) were also related with the presence of COVID-19 infection; however, these associations were considerably attenuated at a non-significant level by adjustment for several confounders in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS This is one of the few available studies supporting evidence that COVID-19 infection may be associated with diverse sociodemographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle factors in an older adults' population in Greece. This study highlights the strong demand to provide psychological and nutritional counselling and support to older adults diagnosed with COVID-19 infection in order to ameliorate disease symptoms and severity, emphasizing the adaptation of healthy dietary and lifestyle habits as preventing and supplementary therapeutic factors against COVID-19.

Abstract
Hyperinflammation is one of the most important pathophysiological risk factors for poor prognosis in patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (Covid-19). Low vagal neuro-immune modulation can lead into this kind of immune dysregulation. The association between vagal activity, sex and inflammatory markers were investigated in patients with Covid-19. A total of 19 patients with Covid-19 were included in the present study. Vagus nerve activity was indexed by heart rate variability (HRV) derived from electrocardiogram at hospital admission. Linear HRV parameters included the root mean square of successive RR interval differences (RMSSD) and high-frequency HRV (HF-HRV), while non-linear parameters included 2 UV%. Immune/inflammatory parameters included C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), systemic inflammatory index (SII), and procalcitonin (PCT). It has been revealed that both linear HRV indices HF-HRV and RMSSD, are significantly negatively correlated with CRP and IL-6, independent of age. The non-linear index of 2 UV% is significantly negatively correlated with NLR and SII, which reflect subtle changes in the response of immunocompetent cells. Patients that received high-flow nasal oxygen therapy had significantly higher IL-6 and CRP levels and lower levels of HF-HRV and RMSSD. These patients also had a significantly longer length of stay in hospital (LOS) than patients receiving low-flow oxygen therapy. Men had higher plasma PCT levels and longer LOS in hospital than women, and PCT statistically explained (mediated) the association between sex and LOS. The present study showed different correlations of linear and non-linear vagal indexes of HRV and inflammatory markers in patients with Covid-19. Significant sex differences in certain inflammatory markers were also observed, which may very well verify previous findings of poor prognosis in men with Covid-19. HRV reflects a continuous interaction between the sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous systems, which are affected by mental or physical stress, and certain disease states. The increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic vagal tone contribute to a higher risk of diseases associated with inflammation, cardiovascular disease, cancer, pulmonary diseases and other pathologies, including infectious diseases such as Covid-19. The present study showed that higher RMSSD (a marker of vagal activity) in Covid-19 patients is associated with lower levels of inflammatory biomarkers, a lower need for treatment and is negatively correlated with intensive care unit admission, leading to a shorter hospital stay. These findings support the idea that activation of vagus nerve may help certain Covid-19 patients by reducing the cytokine storm and excessive inflammation.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 infects cells via its spike (S) protein binding to its surface receptor angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) on target cells and results in acute symptoms involving especially the lungs known as COVID-19. However, increasing evidence indicates that SARS-CoV-2 infection produces neuroinflammation associated with neurological, neuropsychiatric, and cognitive symptoms persists well past the resolution of the infection, known as post-COVID-19 sequalae or long-COVID. The neuroimmune mechanism(s) involved in long-COVID have not been adequately characterized. In this study, we show that recombinant SARS-CoV-2 full-length S protein stimulates release of pro-inflammatory IL-1b, CXCL8, IL-6, and MMP-9 from cultured human microglia via TLR4 receptor activation. Instead, recombinant receptor-binding domain (RBD) stimulates release of TNF-α, IL-18, and S100B via ACE2 signaling. These results provide evidence that SARS-CoV-2 spike protein contributes to neuroinflammation through different mechanisms that may be involved in CNS pathologies associated with long-COVID.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world unprecedentedly, with both positive and negative impacts. COVID-19 significantly impacted the immune system, and understanding the immunological consequences of COVID-19 is essential for developing effective treatment strategies. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively explore and provide insights into the immunological aspects of long COVID-19, a phenomenon where individuals continue to experience a range of symptoms and complications, even after the acute phase of COVID-19 infection has subsided. The immune system responds to the initial infection by producing various immune cells and molecules, including antibodies, T cells, and cytokines. However, in some patients, this immune response becomes dysregulated, leading to chronic inflammation and persistent symptoms. Long COVID-19 encompasses diverse persistent symptoms affecting multiple organ systems, including the respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and gastrointestinal systems. In the post-COVID-19 immunological era, long COVID-19 and its impact on immune response have become a significant concern. Post-COVID-19 immune pathology, including autoimmunity and immune-mediated disorders, has also been reported in some patients. This review provides an overview of the current understanding of long COVID-19, its relationship to immunological responses, and the impact of post-COVID-19 immune pathology on patient outcomes. Additionally, the review addresses the current and potential treatments for long COVID-19, including immunomodulatory therapies, rehabilitation programs, and mental health support, all of which aim to improve the quality of life for individuals with long COVID-19. Understanding the complex interplay between the immune system and long COVID-19 is crucial for developing targeted therapeutic strategies and providing optimal care in the post-COVID-19 era.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the computed tomography (CT) findings of SARs-CoV-2 Omicron variant in relation to respiratory viral loads determined by cycle threshold values in reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Materials and Methods From October 2022 to November 2022, 74 hospitalized patients with Omicron were included in this retrospective study. The radiological features, CT involvement scores in relation to the respiratory viral load, and factors associated with imaging progression (IP) after the RT-PCR results turned negative were analyzed. Results The most common CT patterns of Omicron were multiple round-like or patchy ground-glass opacity (GGO) or mixed GGO in the peripheral or diffuse areas. The grading of CT involvement scores exhibited an inverse pattern compared to viral loads from day 1 to day 8 and from day 13 to day 20 after diagnosis. Among the 65 patients with complete imaging data, 45 (69.23%) showed IP with clinical warning indicators of disease exacerbation negative in 34 and positive in 11. Patients with IP were older than those with non-IP (NIP); the erythrocyte sedimentation rates, procalcitonin levels, and D-dimer levels on admission of patients with IP were significantly higher than those of patients with NIP, whereas the immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibody level on admission and CT involvement score on initial CT of patients with IP were significantly lower than those of patients with NIP (all P < 0.05). Conclusion For patients with Omicron, the IP of lung abnormalities is common when the viral load decreases. Under these circumstances, paying attention to clinical warming indicators of disease progression may contribute to better patient management and the mitigation of severe pneumonia.

Abstract
In December 2019, a SARS-CoV-2 virus, coined Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), discovered in Wuhan, China, affected the global population, causing more than a million and a half deaths. Since then, many studies have shown that the hyperinflammatory response of the most severely affected patients was primarily related to a higher concentration of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6, which directly correlated with disease severity and high mortality. Our study analyzes IL-6 and its soluble receptor complex (sIL-6R and sgp130) in critically ill COVID-19 patients who suffered severe respiratory failure from the perspective of the second COVID wave of 2020. A chemiluminescent immunoassay was performed for the determination of IL6 in serum together with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect serum levels of sIL-6R and sgp130, which confirmed that the second wave's serum levels of IL-6 were significantly elevated in the more severe patients, as with the first 2019 COVID-19 wave, resulting in adverse clinical outcomes. At present, considering that no specific treatment for severe COVID-19 cases in its later stages exists, these molecules could be considered promising markers for disease progression, illness severity, and risk of mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected several aspects of people's lifestyle worldwide. Healthy dietary patterns and their bioactive components may improve or even co-treat the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in several aspects of people's lifestyle and mental health in daily life. The aim of this survey is to evaluate the potential effect of Mediterranean diet (MD) adherence against COVID-19-induced complications. METHODS This is a cross-sectional survey performed on 3721 adults aged between 18 and 65 years old, which aims to evaluate the potential association of MD adherence with multiple sociodemographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle factors during the COVID-19 pandemic period. RESULTS This study has supported evidence that elevated MD compliance was independently related to female gender, better economic status, no smoking, increased risk of abdominal obesity, higher physical activity levels, greater prevalence of adequate sleep quality, better quality of life, and reduced probability of anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic by adjusting for multiple confounders. CONCLUSIONS MD compliance may improve or even co-treat the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in several aspect of people's lifestyle in daily life. Further research is strongly recommended exploring the possible beneficial effects of the MD against COVID-19 lifestyle complications in daily life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COVID-19 is a global pandemic. Understanding the immune responses in pregnant women recovering from COVID-19 may suggest new therapeutic approaches. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study between March 1, 2020, and September 1, 2020. Participants were assigned into the convalescent COVID-19 group if they had a previous COVID-19 infection during pregnancy or the healthy control group. RNA-Seq was performed on human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUMSCs) and human amniotic mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs). Immunohistochemical staining, cytokine testing, lymphocyte subset analysis, RNA-Seq, and functional analyses were performed on the placental and umbilical cord blood (UCB) and compared between the two groups. RESULTS A total of 40 pregnant women were enrolled, with 13 in the convalescent group and 27 in the control group. There were 1024, 46, and 32 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) identified in the placental tissue, hUMSCs, and hAMSCs between the convalescent and control groups, respectively. Enrichment analysis showed those DEGs were associated with immune homeostasis, antiviral activity, cell proliferation, and tissue repair. Levels of IL-6, TNF-α, total lymphocyte counts, B lymphocytes, Tregs percentages, and IFN-γ expressing CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were statistically different between two groups (p ≤ 0.05). ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expressed on the placenta were not different between the two groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Multiple changes in immune responses occurred in the placental tissue, hUMSCs, and hAMSCs after maternal recovery from COVID-19, which might imply their protective roles against COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
Background During the first pandemic phase of COVID-19, an epidemiological study, named First survey, was conducted on the population of a small rural area in northern Italy. In spring 2020, the results showed how a prolonged lockdown slowed down the spread of the virus. Methods After contacting positive First Survey subjects and their families, those who decided to join voluntarily underwent a blood test to assess the presence of qualitative lgG about 2 months after the previous one. This was to determine if IgG persisted in individuals who tested positive in the First Survey as well as to assess the antibody status of their close family members, to determine if they were unintentionally infected. Results Based on serological analysis, 35.1% of the samples contained blood IgG. In subjects who tested positive during the First Survey, 62.5% remained IgG positive more than 2 months later. Among family members who were exposed to a positive relative, 23.7% were infected. Linear regression analysis showed that the presence of an infected person within a household resulted in the infection spreading to the others, but not excessively. Induced isolation extinguished the infection regardless of the extent of the contagion (intra-family or extra-family). Micro-outbreaks of SARS-Cov-2 infection which arose in the same household from extra-familial infections played a decisive role on the statistical significance of IgG-positive subjects (p < 0.001). Discussion The study reveal 52.6% of the IgG-positive subjects in the Second Survey came from the First Survey and 47.4% were family members previously in contact with positive subjects. Data suggest that there have been undiagnosed patients feeding the spread of the virus since the beginning of the pandemic. In conclusion, for future pandemics, it will be necessary: i) to ensure the rapid isolation of symptomatic patients and the early identification of their close contacts, ii) to carry out the maximum number of tests in the shortest possible time, both on symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects, and iii) to implement information campaigns to make people aware of their risks, and implement clear, non-conflicting communication.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Due to their ubiquitous use, isothiazolinones caused allergic contact dermatitis epidemics and their use was restricted by legal regulations. OBJECTIVES We aimed to evaluate demographic data, clinical findings, and patch test features of patients with methylisothiazolinone (MI) and/or methylchloroisothiazolinone(MCI) sensitivity in our study. METHODS This study is a bidirectional and cross-sectional study, between July 2020 and September 2021. A total of 616 patients, including prospective and retrospective populations, demographic data, clinical findings, and patch test results were reviewed. Patients' demographics, patch test results, allergen sources, presence of occupational contact, and the characteristics of dermatitis attacks were recorded. RESULTS A total of 50 patients with MI and MCI/MI sensitivity, 36 male (72%) and 14 female (28%), were included in our study. The overall prevalence of MI and MCI/MI between 2014 and 2021 was 8.4% (52/616) with two peak levels in 2015(21%) and 2021 (20%). A statistically significant relationship was found between shampoo use and facial involvement (p = 0.031), shower gel use and arm involvement (p = 0.027), wet wipe use and hand involvement (p = 0.049), detergent use and the pulps (p = 0.026) and the lateral aspects of fingers involvement (p = 0.048), water-based dye use and periungual involvement (p = 0.047). CONCLUSION Although legal regulations related to MI and MCI/MI cause a decrease in the frequency of their sensitivities were still common causes of allergic contact dermatitis.

Abstract
Immunological dysregulation and inflammation may play a role in the nature of menstruation. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can produce a systemic inflammatory reaction that involves extrapulmonary organs and can also affect the immune system. This study aimed to analyze changes in the menstrual cycle in coronavirus (COVID)-positive women of reproductive age. Methods The data of 35 women of reproductive age were collected telephonically from said patients admitted to the COVID Health Centre (CHC) ward of All India Institute of Ayurveda, New Delhi, during June 20, 2020, to October 31, 2020. Purposive sampling was used for data collection. Wyatt menstrual pictogram and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were used to assess the bleeding pattern and pain during menstruation, respectively. Results Clinically, changes were noted in post-COVID menstruation such as irregularity, polymenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, clots, and menstrual flow in days. However, all results were statistically non-significant. But significant (P = 0.003) menstrual pain was reported. Conclusion Menstrual changes were observed in COVID-19-positive women belonging to the reproductive age group.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 infection, which causes the respiratory disease COVID-19, has spread rapidly from Wuhan, China, since 2019, causing nearly 7 million deaths worldwide in three years. In addition to clinical risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, genetic variability is an important predictor of disease severity and susceptibility. We analyzed common polymorphisms within the LZTFL1 (rs11385942) and ABCA3 (rs13332514) genes in 519 SARS-CoV-2-positive subjects (164 asymptomatic, 246 symptomatic, and 109 hospitalized COVID-19 survivors) and a population-based control group (N?=?2,592; COVID-19 status unknown). Rare ABCA3 AA homozygotes (but not A allele carriers) may be at a significantly increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection [P?=?0.003; OR (95 % CI); 3.66 (1.47-9.15)]. We also observed a borderline significant difference in the genotype distribution of the LZTFL1 rs11385942 polymorphism (P?=?0.04) between the population sample and SARS-CoV-2-positive subjects. In agreement with previous studies, a nonsignificantly higher frequency of minor allele carriers was detected among hospitalized COVID-19 subjects. We conclude that a common polymorphism in the ABCA3 gene may be a significant predictor of susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
There is controversial literature about the effects of the interleukin-2 (IL-2) cytokine family in COVID-19 pathogenesis and immunity. So we aimed to identify the potential in the role of the IL-2 family in COVID-19. A narrative review search was done through online databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The search deadline was up to December 2022. We applied no time limits for the searching strategy. After retrieving articles from the databases, the authors summarized the data into two data extraction tables. The first data extraction table described the changes in the IL-2 cytokine family in COVID-19 and the second table described the therapeutic interventions targeting IL-2 family cytokines. The results of the literature on the role of the IL-2 cytokine family do not show a singular rule. IL-2 cytokine family can change during severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Some studies suggest that IL-2 cytokine family rise during the infection and cause severe inflammatory response and cytokine storm. These cytokines are shown to be increased in immunocompromised patients and worsen their prognosis. In individuals without underlying disease, the upregulation of the IL-2 family shows the clinical outcome of the disease and rises with disease severity. However, some other studies show that these cytokines do not significantly change. IL-2 cytokine family is mostly upregulated in healthy individuals who had vaccination, but immunocompromised patients did not show significant changes after a single dose of vaccines, which shows that these patients need booster doses for efficient immunity. IL-2 cytokine family can also be used as immunotherapy agents in COVID-19.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Xuebijing injection (XBJ) on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients. METHODS Related studies on multiple biological databases and websites were searched up to December 11, 2021 without language and publication time restrictions. Review Manager V.5.3 and Stata 14 software were used for data analysis. RESULTS Seven studies were finally included. The Metaanalysis showed that compared with the routine treatment alone, XBJ combined with the routine treatment can reduce the 28day mortality ( = 0.3, 95% : 0.12, 0.74), Creactive protein ( = -12.8, 95% : -23.13, 3.46), erythrocyte sedimentation rate ( = -9.32, 95% : -14.66, -3.98) and interleukin-6 (S = -0.6, 95% : -1.04, -0.17) levels and increase the leukocyte ( = 0.73, 95% : 0.42, 1.04) and lymphocyte count ( = 0.18, 95% : 0.07, 0.29) in peripheral blood; additionally, it has no obvious side effects ( = 1.11, 95% : 0.65, 1.9). There was no evidence that the XBJ combined therapy can improve the nucleic acid conversion rate and computed tomography improvement rate of COVID19 patients. CONCLUSIONS Preliminary evidence suggests that XBJ combined with routine treatment seems to be more effective than routine treatment for patients with COVID19. Limited by the number and quality of included papers, this finding still needs further validation by more studies.

Abstract
T cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain containing protein 3 (Tim-3), an immune checkpoint, is important for maintaining immune tolerance. There is increasing evidence that Tim-3 is aberrantly expressed in patients with COVID-19, indicating that it may play an important role in COVID-19. In this review, we discuss the altered expression and potential role of Tim-3 in COVID-19. The expression of Tim-3 and its soluble form (sTim-3) has been found to be upregulated in COVID-19 patients. The levels of Tim-3 on T cells and circulating sTim-3 have been shown to be associated with the severity of COVID-19, suggesting that this protein could be a potential biomarker of COVID-19. Moreover, this review also highlights the potential of Tim-3 as a therapeutic target of COVID-19.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the clinical significance and value of peripheral blood T lymphocyte subset in patients with asymptomatic novel coronavirus variant strains infection (OMICRON). METHODS A retrospective analysis of 281 patients with asymptomatic OMICRON infection who were admitted and isolated to the Fuyang Second People's Hospital from March to April 2022 was conducted. With 32 normal people as the control group, T lymphocytes of the two groups (CD3 + T, CD3 + CD4 + T, CD3 + CD8 + T) were analyzed and the differences between the two groups were analyzed. CD4 + T lymphocytes between patients with asymptomatic OMICRON infection and patients with mild COVID-19 infection in 2020 were analyzed and compared. Based on CD3 CD4 + T lymphocyte changes, lymphocyte reference range: CD3 CD4 + T lymphocyte count 404-1612/μL. Lower than 404 × 106/μL was defined as lymphocytopenia, patients were divided into the reduced group (138) and the normal group (143). The CT value of novel coronavirus nucleic acid (ORF1ab gene, N gene) and the time of viral shedding were compared between the two groups. RESULTS Differences in number of CD3 + T cells, CD3 + CD4 + T cells, and CD3 + CD8 + T cells were significant between both groups (P < 0.05), which were significantly higher in the normal population than in the patients with asymptomatic OMICRON infection. There was no significant difference in CD4 + T lymphocytes between patients with asymptomatic OMICRON infection and patients with mild COVID-19 infection in 2020 (P < 0.05). The novel coronavirus nucleic CT value was significantly lower in the CD3CD4 + T lymphocyte-reduced group than in the CD3CD4 + T lymphocyte-normal group (P < 0.05). Moreover, the time of viral shedding was significantly longer in the reduced group compared with the normal group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The changing characteristics of the peripheral blood T lymphocyte subset count in patients with asymptomatic OMICRON infections can provide an important basis for the diagnosis and outcome of the asymptomatic OMICRON infection.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection has claimed millions of lives since late 2019, yet there are still many unexplored areas in its pathogenesis and clinical outcomes. COVID-19 is a disease that can affects multiple systems, some of which are overlapped with those modulated by gut microbiota, especially the immune system, thus leading to our concentration on analyzing the roles of microbiota in COVID-19 pathogenesis through the gut-lung axis. Dysbiosis of the commensal intestinal microbes and their metabolites (e.g., SCFAs) as well as the expression and activity of ACE2 in the gut could influence the host's immune system in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, it has been known that the elderly and individuals diagnosed with comorbidities (e.g., hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, etc.) are more susceptible to gut flora alterations, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and death. Thus, in this review we will focus on analyzing how the gut microbiota regulates the immune system that leads to different responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Since diet is a major factor to modulate the status of gut microbiota, dietary influence on COVID-19 pathogenesis will be also discussed, aiming to shed light on how diet-modulated gut microbiota regulates the susceptibility, severity, and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
Immunoglobulin A nephropathy, the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide, is a leading cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney failure. Several cases of immunoglobulin A nephropathy relapse in native kidneys have been described after COVID-19 vaccination or SARS-CoV-2 infection. Here, we report the case of a 52-year-old kidney transplant recipient who had a stable transplant function for more than 14 years, with a glomerular filtration rate above 30 ml/min/1.73 m2. The patient had been vaccinated against COVID-19 four times with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, most recently in March 2022. Eight weeks after a symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in June 2022, his glomerular filtration rate had decreased by more than 50%, and his proteinuria increased to 17.5 g per day. A renal biopsy indicated highly active immunoglobulin A nephritis. Despite steroid therapy, the function of the transplanted kidney deteriorated, and long-term dialysis became necessary because of recurrence of his underlying renal disease. This case report provides what is, to our knowledge, the first description of recurrent immunoglobulin A nephropathy in a kidney transplant recipient after SARS-CoV-2 infection leading to severe transplant failure and finally graft loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early data on COVID-19 (based primarily on PCR testing) indicated a low burden in Sub-Saharan Africa. To better understand this, this study aimed to estimate the incidence rate and identify predictors of SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion in the two largest cities of Burkina Faso. This study is part of the EmulCOVID-19 project (ANRS-COV13). METHODS Our study utilized the WHO Unity protocol for cohort sero-epidemiological studies of COVID-19 in general population. We conducted random sampling stratified by age group and sex. Individuals aged 10 years and older in the cities of Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso were included and surveyed at 4 time points, each 21 days apart, from March 3 to May 15, 2021. WANTAI SARS-CoV-2 Ab ELISA serological tests were used to detect total antibodies (IgM, IgG) in serum. Predictors were investigated using Cox proportional hazards regression. RESULTS We analyzed the data from 1399 participants (1051 in Ouagadougou, 348 in Bobo-Dioulasso) who were SARS-CoV-2 seronegative at baseline and had at least one follow-up visit. The incidence rate of SARS-CoV-2 seroconversion was 14.3 cases [95%CI 13.3-15.4] per 100 person-weeks. The incidence rate was almost three times higher in Ouagadougou than in Bobo-Dioulasso (Incidence rate ratio: IRR = 2.7 [2.2-3.2], p < 0.001). The highest incidence rate was reported among women aged 19-59 years in Ouagadougou (22.8 cases [19.6-26.4] per 100 person-weeks) and the lowest among participants aged 60 years and over in Bobo-Dioulasso, 6.3 cases [4.6-8.6] per 100 person-weeks. Multivariable analysis showed that participants aged 19 years and older were almost twice as likely to seroconvert during the study period compared with those aged 10 to 18 years (Hazard ratio: HR = 1.7 [1.3-2.3], p < 0.001). Those aged 10-18 years exhibited more asymptomatic forms than those aged 19 years and older, among those who achieved seroconversion (72.9% vs. 40.4%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The spread of COVID-19 is more rapid in adults and in large cities. Strategies to control this pandemic in Burkina Faso, must take this into account. Adults living in large cities should be the priority targets for vaccination efforts against COVID-19.

Abstract
SARS-CoV-2 infects cells via its spike (S) protein binding to its surface receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and results in the production of multiple proinflammatory cytokines, especially in the lungs, leading to what is known as COVID-19. However, the cell source and the mechanism of secretion of such cytokines have not been adequately characterized. In this study, we used human cultured mast cells that are plentiful in the lungs and showed that recombinant SARS-CoV-2 full-length S protein (1-10 ng/mL), but not its receptor-binding domain (RBD), stimulates the secretion of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β) as well as the proteolytic enzymes chymase and tryptase. The secretion of IL-1β, chymase, and tryptase is augmented by the co-administration of interleukin-33 (IL-33) (30 ng/mL). This effect is mediated via toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) for IL-1β and via ACE2 for chymase and tryptase. These results provide evidence that the SARS-CoV-2 S protein contributes to inflammation by stimulating mast cells through different receptors and could lead to new targeted treatment approaches.

Abstract
Since the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic appeared, both governments and the scientific community have focused their efforts on the search for prophylactic and therapeutic alternatives in order to reduce its effects. Vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 have been approved and administered, playing a key role in the overcoming of this situation. However, they have not reached the whole world population, and several doses will be needed in the future in order to successfully protect individuals. The disease is still here, so other strategies should be explored with the aim of supporting the immune system before and during the infection. An adequate diet is certainly associated with an optimal inflammatory and oxidative stress status, as poor levels of different nutrients could be related to altered immune responses and, consequently, an augmented susceptibility to infections and severe outcomes derived from them. Minerals exert a wide range of immune-modulatory, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities, which may be useful for fighting this illness. Although they cannot be considered as a definitive therapeutic solution, the available evidence to date, obtained from studies on similar respiratory diseases, might reflect the rationality of deeper investigations of the use of minerals during this pandemic.

Abstract
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection triggers various events from molecular to tissue level, which in turn is given by the intrinsic characteristics of each patient. Given the molecular diversity characteristic of each cellular phenotype, the possible cytopathic, tissue and clinical effects are difficult to predict, which determines the heterogeneity of COVID-19 symptoms. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the cytopathic effects of SARS-CoV-2 on various cell types, focusing on the development of COVID-19, which in turn may lead, in some patients, to a persistence of symptoms after recovery from the disease, a condition known as long COVID. We describe the molecular mechanisms underlying virus-host interactions, including alterations in protein expression, intracellular signaling pathways, and immune responses. In particular, the article highlights the potential impact of these cytopathies on cellular function and clinical outcomes, such as immune dysregulation, neuropsychiatric disorders, and organ damage. The article concludes by discussing future directions for research and implications for the management and treatment of COVID-19 and long COVID.

Abstract
In previous publications, we pointed out the importance of mannosylation of fibrinogen for the development of cardiovascular complications and fucosylation as a predictor of peritoneal membrane dysfunction in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). After a follow-up period of 30 months from the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we evaluated the significance of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol) therapy, primary disease, biochemical and hematologic analyzes, and previously performed glycan analysis by lectin-based microarray as predictors of mortality in this patient group. After univariate Cox regression analysis, diabetes mellitus (DM) and calcitriol therapy were found to be potential predictors of mortality. Additional multivariate Cox regression analysis confirmed that only DM was a predictor of mortality. Nevertheless, the use of calcitriol in therapy significantly reduced mortality in this patient group, as shown by the Kaplan-Meier survival curve. The presence of DM as a concomitant disease proved to be a strong predictor of fatal outcome in PD patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. This is the first study to indicate the importance and beneficial effect of calcitriol therapy on survival in PD patients with COVID-19 infection. In addition, this study points to the possibility that adverse thrombogenic events observed in PD patients during the pandemic may be caused by aberrant fibrinogen glycosylation.

Abstract
In patients with severe COVID-19, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), and even mortality can result from cytokine storm, which is a hyperinflammatory medical condition caused by the excessive and uncontrolled release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. High levels of numerous crucial pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-2, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, interferon (IFN)-γ, IFN-induced protein 10 kDa, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and IL-10 and so on, have been found in severe COVID-19. They participate in cascade amplification pathways of pro-inflammatory responses through complex inflammatory networks. Here, we review the involvements of these critical inflammatory cytokines in SARS-CoV-2 infection and discuss their potential roles in triggering or regulating cytokine storm, which can help to understand the pathogenesis of severe COVID-19. So far, there is rarely effective therapeutic strategy for patients with cytokine storm besides using glucocorticoids, which is proved to result in fatal side effects. Clarifying the roles of key involved cytokines in the complex inflammatory network of cytokine storm will help to develop an ideal therapeutic intervention, such as neutralizing antibody of certain cytokine or inhibitor of some inflammatory signal pathways.

Abstract
Co-infection of COVID-19 with other diseases increases the challenges related to its treatment management. COVID-19 co-infection with parasites is studied with low frequency. Here, we systematically reviewed the cases of parasitic disease co-infection with COVID-19. All articles on COVID-19 co-infected with parasites (protozoa, helminths, and ectoparasites), were screened through defined inclusion/exclusion criteria. Of 2190 records, 35 studies remained for data extraction. The majority of studies were about COVID-19 co-infected with malaria, followed by strongyloidiasis, amoebiasis, chagas, filariasis, giardiasis, leishmaniasis, lophomoniasis, myiasis, and toxoplasmosis. No or low manifestation differences were reported between the co-infected cases and naïve COVID-19 or naïve parasitic disease. Although there was a relatively low number of reports on parasitic diseases-COVID-19 co-infection, COVID-19 and some parasitic diseases have overlapping symptoms and also COVID-19 conditions and treatment regimens may cause some parasites re-emergence, relapse, or re-activation. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the on-time diagnosis of COVID-19 and the co-infected parasites.

Abstract
Since COVID-19 first emerged in Wuhan, China, and was declared a global pandemic by the WHO, researchers have been meticulously studying the disease and its complications. Studies of severe COVID-19 disease among pediatric populations are scarce, leading to difficulty in establishing a comprehensive management approach. Case presentation: This report outlines a case of a long-standing combined iron and vitamin B12 deficiency anemia in a three-year-old treated at the Children's Clinical University Hospital due to severe COVID-19 disease. The patient's clinical condition coincided with the derangement of biomarkers described in the literature, including lymphopenia, increased neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), decreased lymphocyte/C-reactive protein ratio (LCR), as well as elevated inflammatory markers such as CRP and D-dimers. The patient developed severe bilateral pneumonia requiring invasive ventilation, high-flow oxygen, immunosuppressive therapy with dexamethasone and tocilizumab, and supplementation of anemia deficits with blood transfusion and vitamin B12 administration. Conclusions: Our findings are consistent with the most important biomarkers reported in the literature indicative of severe disease progression. Additionally, poorly controlled anemia may be suggested as a potentially important risk factor for severe COVID-19 disease among children. However, additional quantitative research is required to establish the nature and severity of the risk.

Abstract
Vitamin D plays a critical role in bone development and maintenance, and in other physiological functions. The quantitation of endogenous levels of individual vitamin D and its metabolites is crucial for assessing several disease state conditions. With cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) leading to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there are several studies that have associated lower levels of serum vitamin D with severity of infection in COVID-19 patients. In this context, we have developed and validated a robust LC–MS/MS method for simultaneous quantitation of vitamin D and its metabolites in human dried blood spot (DBS) obtained from participants tested for COVID-19. The chromatographic separation for vitamin D and metabolites was performed using an ACE Excel C18 PFP column protected with a C18 guard column (Phenomenex, Torrance, CA, USA). The mobile phase consisted of formic acid in water (0.1% v/v) as mobile phase A and formic acid in methanol (0.1% v/v) as mobile phase B, operated at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. Analysis was performed utilizing the LC–MS/MS technique. The method was sensitive with a limit of quantification of 0.78 ng/mL for all analytes, and had a large dynamic range (200 ng/mL) with a total run time of 11 min. The inter- and intraday accuracy and precision values met the acceptance criteria per the US Food and Drug Administration guidelines. Blood concentrations of 25(OH)D3, vitamin D3, 25(OH)D2, and vitamin D2 over a range of 2–195.6, 0.5–121.5, 0.6–54.9, and 0.5–23.9 ng/mL, respectively, were quantified in 909 DBS samples. In summary, our developed LC−MS/MS method may be used for quantification of vitamin D and its metabolites in DBS, and may be applied to investigations of the emerging role of these compounds in various physiological processes.

Abstract
Pyroptosis is a form of cell death associated with inflammation. In the maintenance of airway homeostasis, pyroptosis goes through activation and assembly of Inflammasome. The pyroptosis pathway is mediated by caspase which activates the pore-forming effect of substrate gasdermin family members. It eventually leads to lysis and release of the cell contents and then induces an inflammatory response. In this process, it participates in airway homeostasis regulation by affecting airway immunity, airway epithelial structure and airway microbiota. Therefore, we discussed the correlation between airway immunity, airway epithelial structure, airway microbiota and the mechanism of pyroptosis to describe the role of pyroptosis in airway homeostasis regulation which is of great significance for understanding the occurrence and treatment of airway inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study is aimed at calculating the IgA antibody dynamic range in healthcare workers (HCWs) after immunization with CoronaVac® and Comirnaty® booster dose. METHODS A total of 118 HCW serum samples from Southern Brazil were collected the day before the first vaccine dose (day 0) and + 20, + 40, + 110, + 200 days following the vaccine's first dose, and + 15 days after a Comirnaty® booster dose. Immunoglobulin A (IgA) was quantified using immunoassays for anti-S1 (spike) protein antibodies (Euroimmun, Lübeck, Germany). RESULTS Seroconversion for the S1 protein occurred in 75 (63.56%) and 115 (97.47%) HCWs by day + 40 and day + 15 after the booster dose, respectively. There was an absence of IgA antibodies after the booster dose in two (1.69%) HCWs undergoing biannual rituximab administration and one (0.85%) HCW for no apparent reason. CONCLUSION Complete vaccination showed a significant IgA antibody production response, and the booster dose considerably increased this response.

Abstract
To investigate the effect conferred by vaccination and previous infection against SARS-CoV-2 infection in molecular level, weighted gene co-expression network analysis was applied to screen vaccination, prior infection and Omicron infection-related gene modules in 46 Omicron outpatients and 8 controls, and CIBERSORT algorithm was used to infer the proportions of 22 subsets of immune cells. 15 modules were identified, where the brown module showed positive correlations with Omicron infection (r = 0.35, P = 0.01) and vaccination (r = 0.62, P = 1 × 10-6). Enrichment analysis revealed that LILRB2 was the unique gene shared by both phosphatase binding and MHC class I protein binding. Pathways including "B cell receptor signaling pathway" and "FcγR-mediated phagocytosis" were enriched in the vaccinated samples of the highly correlated LILRB2. LILRB2 was also identified as the second hub gene through PPI network, after LCP2. In conclusion, attenuated LILRB2 transcription in PBMC might highlight a novel target in overcoming immune evasion and improving vaccination strategies.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). About 45% of COVID-19 patients experience several symptoms a few months after the initial infection and develop post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC), referred to as "Long-COVID," characterized by persistent physical and mental fatigue. However, the exact pathogenetic mechanisms affecting the brain are still not well-understood. There is increasing evidence of neurovascular inflammation in the brain. However, the precise role of the neuroinflammatory response that contributes to the disease severity of COVID-19 and long COVID pathogenesis is not clearly understood. Here, we review the reports that the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can cause blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction and damage neurons either directly, or via activation of brain mast cells and microglia and the release of various neuroinflammatory molecules. Moreover, we provide recent evidence that the novel flavanol eriodictyol is particularly suited for development as an effective treatment alone or together with oleuropein and sulforaphane (ViralProtek®), all of which have potent anti-viral and anti-inflammatory actions.

Abstract
The SARS-CoV-2 infection causes COVID-19, which has affected approximately six hundred million people globally as of August 2022. Organs and cells harboring angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) surface receptors are the primary targets of the virus. However, once it enters the body through the respiratory system, the virus can spread hematogenously to infect other body organs. Therefore, COVID-19 affects many organs, causing severe and long-term complications, even after the disease has ended, thus worsening the quality of life. Although it is known that the respiratory system is most affected by the SARS-CoV-2 infection, many organs/systems are affected in the short and long term. Since the COVID-19 disease simultaneously affects many organs, redesigning diagnostic and therapy policies to fit the damaged organs is strongly recommended. Even though the pathophysiology of many problems the infection causes is unknown, the frequency of COVID-19 cases rises with age and the existence of preexisting symptoms. This study aims to update our knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 infection and multi-organ dysfunction interaction based on clinical and theoretical evidence. For this purpose, the study comprehensively elucidates the most recent studies on the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on multiple organs and systems, including respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, nervous, endocrine, reproductive, immune, and parts of the integumentary system. Understanding the range of atypical COVID-19 symptoms could improve disease surveillance, limit transmission, and avoid additional multi-organ-system problems.
