FTIR and Raman Characterization of TiO2 Nanoparticles Coated with Polyethylene Glycol as Carrier for 2-Methoxyestradiol

Preparation of titanium dioxide nanoparticles from Solanum Tuberosum peel extract and its applications

The present study describes a method for the preparation of green titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles from the peel of Solanum tuberosum, commonly known as potato, and the potato peel being a kitchen waste. The green synthesized TiO2 (G- TiO2) nanoparticles were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy, TEM, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity of the G- TiO2 nanoparticles was also shown using the dye bromophenol blue. To explore the biocompatibility of the G- TiO2, the cell viability in normal as well as cancer cells was assessed. Further, the in vivo toxicity of the G- TiO2 nanoparticles was assessed using zebrafish embryos. The novelty of the present invention is to utilize kitchen waste for a useful purpose for the synthesis of titanium dioxide nanoparticles which is known to have UV light scavenging properties. Moreover, the potato peel is a natural antioxidant and possesses a skin-lightening effect. A combination of the potato peel extract and titanium dioxide prepared using the extract will have a combinatorial effect for protecting UV light exposure to the skin and lightening the skin colour.

The Nephroprotective Effect of In Utero Administration of Green Synthesized Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles in Albino Rats

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) are one of the most popular nanoscale materials and have a wide range of applications in the manufacturing industry; nonetheless, researchers' focus has been directed to the detrimental consequences of TiO2-NPs. The current study was designed to assess the potential hazardous effects of chemically synthesized TiO2-NPs on the placenta and feto-maternal kidneys of rats. On the other hand, the probable positive impact of TiO2-NPs made after green synthesis was also evaluated. HepG2 cell lines were used to assess the cytotoxicity of chemical and green TiO2-NPs. Five groups of fifty pregnant female rats were formed (n=10). The first (control) group received distilled water. The second and third groups were orally given 100 and 300 mg/kg body weight (bw) of chemical TiO2-NPs, respectively. The fourth and fifth groups were orally given 100 and 300 mg/kg bw of green synthesized TiO2-NPs, respectively. On gestational day 20 (GD 20), blood and tissues were collected for biochemical and histological studies. Our findings revealed that chemical TiO2-NPs induced apoptosis in HepG2 cells at high concentrations, while there was no observed toxicity for green TiO2-NPs. The chemically treated TiO2-NPs groups showed a significant decrease in the level of HDL and a significant increase in cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Renal tissues showed necrosis with exfoliation of lining epithelial cells, degenerated tubules, and glomerulonephritis. While the placenta was atrophied and hyalinized. Moreover, Bax expression significantly increased in the renal tubular cells and the villi of the placenta. Contrariwise, green TiO2-NPs-treated groups showed a significant rise in HDL levels with a significant reduction in triglycerides and LDL levels, while cholesterol levels were unaffected. Also, renal tissues showed mild degenerative changes in the glomeruli and renal tubules; thus, noticeable regeneration of epithelium lining tubules was detected in the maternal kidney. Bax showed a minimal reaction in the renal tubules and the villi of the placenta. It concluded that in contrast to chemical TiO2-NPs, biosynthesized TiO2-NPs with garlic showed a positive impact on the biochemical profile and histological investigations.

Development of a novel LED-IoT photoreactor for enhanced removal of carbamazepine waste driven by solar energy

This study introduces an innovative LED-IoT photoreactor, representing a significant advancement in response to the demand for sustainable water purification. The integration of LED-IoT installations addresses the challenge of intermittent sunlight availability, employing LEDs with a spectrum mimicking natural sunlight. Passive Infra-Red (PIR) sensors and Internet of things (IoT) technology ensure consistent radiation intensity, with the LED deactivating in ample sunlight and activating in its absence. Utilizing a visible light-absorbing photocatalyst developed through sol-gel synthesis and mild-temperature calcination, this research demonstrates a remarkable carbamazepine removal efficiency exceeding 95% under LED-IoT system illumination, compared to less than 90% efficiency with sunlight alone, within a 6-h exposure period. Moreover, the designed photocatalytic system achieves over 60% mineralization of carbamazepine after 12 h. Notably, the photocatalyst demonstrated excellent stability with no performance loss during five further cycles. Furthermore, integration with renewable energy sources facilitated continuous operation beyond daylight hours, enhancing the system's applicability in real-world water treatment scenarios. A notable application of the LED-IoT system at an operating sewage treatment plant showed nearly 80% efficiency in carbamazepine removal from sewage in the secondary settling tank after 6 h of irradiation, coupled with nearly 40% mineralization efficiency. Additionally, physicochemical analyses such as XPS and STA-FTIR confirm that the carbamazepine photooxidation process does not affect the surface of the photocatalyst, showing no adsorption for degradation products.

Novel 3D printed polysaccharide-based materials with prebiotic activity for potential treatment of diaper rash

Diaper rash, mainly occurring as erythema and itching in the diaper area, causes considerable distress to infants and toddlers. Increasing evidence suggests that an unequal distribution of microorganisms on the skin contributes to the development of diaper dermatitis. Probiotic bacteria, like Staphylococcus epidermidis, are crucial for maintaining a healthy balance in the skin's microbiome, among others, through their fermentative metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids. Using a defined prebiotic as a carbon source (e.g., as part of the diaper formulation) can selectively trigger the fermentation of probiotic bacteria. A proper material choice can reduce diaper rash incidence by diminishing the skin exposure to wetness and faeces. Using 3D printing, we fabricated carbon-rich materials for the top sheet layer of baby diapers that enhance the probiotic activity of S. epidermidis. The developed materials' printability, chemical composition, swelling ability, and degradation rate were analysed. In addition, microbiological tests evaluated their potential as a source of in situ short-chain fatty acid production. Finally, biocompatibility testing with skin cells evaluated their safety for potential use as part of diapers. The results demonstrate a cost-effective approach for producing novel materials that can tailor the ecological balance of the skin microflora and help treat diaper rash.

Corrosion Rate and Mechanism of Degradation of Chitosan/TiO2 Coatings Deposited on MgZnCa Alloy in Hank's Solution

Overly fast corrosion degradation of biodegradable magnesium alloys has been a major problem over the last several years. The development of protective coatings by using biocompatible, biodegradable, and non-toxic material such as chitosan ensures a reduction in the rate of corrosion of Mg alloys in simulated body fluids. In this study, chitosan/TiO2 nanocomposite coating was used for the first time to hinder the corrosion rate of Mg19Zn1Ca alloy in Hank's solution. The main goal of this research is to investigate and explain the corrosion degradation mechanism of Mg19Zn1Ca alloy coated by nanocomposite chitosan-based coating. The chemical composition, structural analyses, and corrosion tests were used to evaluate the protective properties of the chitosan/TiO2 coating deposited on the Mg19Zn1Ca substrate. The chitosan/TiO2 coating slows down the corrosion rate of the magnesium alloy by more than threefold (3.6 times). The interaction of TiO2 (NPs) with the hydroxy and amine groups present in the chitosan molecule cause their uniform distribution in the chitosan matrix. The chitosan/TiO2 coating limits the contact of the substrate with Hank's solution.

Improving the 3D Printability and Mechanical Performance of Biorenewable Soybean Oil-Based Photocurable Resins

The general requirement of replacing petroleum-derived plastics with renewable resources is particularly challenging for new technologies such as the additive manufacturing of photocurable resins. In this work, the influence of mono- and bifunctional reactive diluents on the printability and performance of resins based on acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) was explored. Polyethylene glycol di(meth)acrylates of different molecular weights were selected as diluents based on the viscosity and mechanical properties of their binary mixtures with AESO. Ternary mixtures containing 60% AESO, polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) and polyethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (PEG200DMA) further improved the mechanical properties, water resistance and printability of the resin. Specifically, the terpolymer AESO/PEG575/PEG200DMA 60/20/20 (wt.%) improved the modulus (16% increase), tensile strength (63% increase) and %deformation at the break (21% increase), with respect to pure AESO. The enhancement of the printability provided by the reactive diluents was proven by Jacobs working curves and the improved accuracy of printed patterns. The proposed formulation, with a biorenewable carbon content of 67%, can be used as the matrix of innovative resins with unrestricted applicability in the electronics and biomedical fields. However, much effort must be done to increase the array of bio-based raw materials.

Unique properties of titanium dioxide quantum dots assisted regulation of growth and biochemical parameters of Hibiscus sabdariffa plants

Owing to the uniqueness of quantum dots (QDs) as a potential nanomaterial for agricultural application, hence in the present study, titanium dioxide quantum dots (TiO2 QDs) were successfully synthesized via sol-gel technique and the physico-chemical properties of the prepared TiO2 QDs were analyzed. Based on the results, the TiO2 QDs showed the presence of anatase phase of TiO2. TEM examination revealed spherical QDs morphology with an average size of 7.69 ± 1.22 nm. The large zeta potential value (-20.9 ± 2.3 mV) indicate greater stability of the prepared TiO2 QDs in aqueous solutions. Moreover, in this work, the application of TiO2 QDs on Hibiscus sabdariffa plants was conducted, where H. sabdariffa plants were foliar sprayed twice a week in the early morning with different concentrations of TiO2 QDs (0, 2, 5, 10, 15 and 30 ppm) to evaluate their influence on these plants in terms of morphological indexes and biochemical parameters. The results exhibited an increasing impact of the different used concentrations of TiO2 QDs on morphological indexes, such as fresh weight, dry weight, shoot length, root length, and leaf number, and physio-biochemical parameters like chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoid contents, total pigments and total phenolic contents. Remarkably, the most prominent result was recorded at 15 ppm TiO2 QDs where plant height, total protein and enzymatic antioxidants like catalase and peroxidase were noted to increase by 47.6, 20.5, 29.5 and 38.3%, respectively compared to control. Therefore, foliar spraying with TiO2 QDs positively serves as an effective strategy for inducing optimistic effects in H. sabdariffa plants.

Fine-Tuned Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite: Harnessing Copper(II)-Imidazole Complex for Enhanced Biological Responses and Balanced Photocatalytic Functionality

In this study, the synthesis of biologically active copper(II) complex [Cu(im)2]Cl2 was achieved using a reported method. Subsequently, this copper(II) complex was strategically grafted onto graphene oxide, resulting in the formation of a nanocomposite denoted as copper(II)-complex-grafted graphene oxide (Cu-GO). The comprehensive characterization of Cu-GO was conducted through various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-visible spectroscopy, emission spectra analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Copper K-edge X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The antibacterial efficacy of Cu-GO compounds was assessed using disk diffusion and microbroth dilution methods. Notably, the copper complex exhibited the highest effectiveness, showcasing a Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of 500 µL against Klebsiella bacteria. The antibacterial activities of all compounds were systematically screened, revealing the superior performance of the copper complex compared to standalone copper compounds. Expanding the scope of the investigation, we explored the antioxidant and anti-obesity activities of the copper complexes against Klebsiella organisms. The results underscore promising directions for the further exploration of the diverse health-related applications of these compounds. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance of the Cu-GO nanocomposite was evaluated under sunlight irradiation. Notably, the antioxidant and anti-obesity activities of Cu-GO, assessed in terms of percentage inhibition at a concentration of 200 mg/mL, exhibited values of 41% and 45%, respectively. Additionally, the Cu-GO composite exhibited exceptional efficacy, achieving a degradation efficiency of 74% for RhB under sunlight irradiation, surpassing both graphite and GO. These findings not only demonstrate enhanced biological activity, but also highlight a notable level of moderate photocatalytic performance. Such dual functionality underscores the potential versatility of Cu-GO nanocomposites across various applications, blending heightened biological efficacy with controlled photocatalysis. Our study offers valuable insights into the multifunctional attributes of copper(II)-complex-grafted graphene oxide nanocomposites, thereby paving the way for their broader utilization in diverse fields.

Nanoengineered chitosan functionalized titanium dioxide biohybrids for bacterial infections and cancer therapy

Nanoengineered chitosan functionalized titanium dioxide biohybrids (CTiO2@NPs) were prepared with Amomum subulatum Roxb extract via one-pot green method and assessed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, SEM and EDAX analyses. As revealed by XRD pattern, the nanohybrids exhibits a rutile TiO2 crystallites around 45 nm in size. The emergence of the Ti-O-Ti bond is identified by observing a peak between 400 and 800 cm-1. A wide bandgap (4.8 eV) has been observed in CTiO2@NPs, due to the quantum confinement effects and the oxygen vacancies reveal the intriguing potential of developed nanohybrids for various applications. Surface flaws were identified by observing an emission band at 382, 437, 482, 517, and 556 nm. They also exhibit better antibacterial performances using well diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus substilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Escherichia coli. CTiO2@NPs were discovered to have free radical scavenging activity on DPPH analysis and exhibit IC50 value as 95.80 μg/mL and standard (Vitamin C) IC50 is 87.62 μg/mL. CTiO2@NPs exhibited better anticancer properties against the osteosarcoma (MG-63) cell line. All these findings suggest that there is a forum for further useful therapeutic applications. Therefore, we claim that nano-engineered carbohydrated TiO2 phytohybrid is a promising solution for bacterial infections and bone cancer.

The Utilization of Plant-Material-Loaded Vesicular Drug Delivery Systems in the Management of Pulmonary Diseases

Medicinal plants have been utilized to treat a variety of conditions on account of the bioactive properties that they contain. Most bioactive constituents from plants are of limited effectiveness, due to poor solubility, limited permeability, first-pass metabolism, efflux transporters, chemical instability, and food-drug interactions However, when combined with vesicular drug delivery systems (VDDS), herbal medicines can be delivered at a predetermined rate and can exhibit site-specific action. Vesicular drug delivery systems are novel pharmaceutical formulations that make use of vesicles as a means of encapsulating and transporting drugs to various locations within the body; they are a cutting-edge method of medication delivery that combats the drawbacks of conventional drug delivery methods. Drug delivery systems offer promising strategies to overcome the bioavailability limitations of bioactive phytochemicals. By improving their solubility, protecting them from degradation, enabling targeted delivery, and facilitating controlled release, drug delivery systems can enhance the therapeutic efficacy of phytochemicals and unlock their full potential in various health conditions. This review explores and collates the application of plant-based VDDS with the potential to exhibit protective effects against lung function loss in the interest of innovative and effective treatment and management of respiratory illnesses.

Bovine Serum Albumin Nanoparticles Enhanced the Intranasal Bioavailability of Silybin in Rats

Silybin (SLB), an important flavonoid from silymarin, displays significant hepatoprotective, anticancer, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects. However, its therapeutic efficacy is limited by its low solubility and bioavailability. To address these challenges, we engineered bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticles (NP) loaded with SLB (BSA-NP/SLB) using the coacervation method. BSA-SLB NP exhibited a spherical shape, a mean size of 197 nm, a polydispersity index of 0.275, a zeta potential of -34 mV, and an entrapment efficiency of 67%. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated amorphization of SLB upon encapsulation. Formulation stability was upheld over 180 days. In vitro release assays demonstrated controlled diffusion-erosion release, with approximately 40% SLB released within 0.5 h and 100% over 12 h. Intranasal administration of BSA-NP/SLB in rats improved SLB bioavailability by fourfold compared to free SLB. These findings highlight the promising potential of intranasally administered BSA-NP/SLB as an alternative approach to enhance SLB bioavailability, paving the way for innovative therapeutic applications.

Stable polyethylene glycol/biochar composite as a cost-effective photothermal absorber for 24 hours of steam and electricity cogeneration

Seawater desalination powered by solar energy is the most environmentally and economical solution in responding to the global water and energy crisis. However, solar desalination has been negatively impacted by intermittent sun radiation that alternates between day and night. In this study, sugarcane bagasse (SCB) was recycled via the pyrolysis process to biochar as a cost-effective solar absorber. Besides, polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a phase change material was encapsulated in the abundant pore structure of biochar to store the thermal energy for 24 hours of continuous steam generation. The BDB/1.5 PEG evaporator exhibited an evaporation rate of 2.11 kg m-2 h-1 (98.1% efficiency) under 1 sun irradiation. Additionally, the BDB/1.5 PEG evaporator incorporated by the TEC1-12706 module for continuous steam and electricity generation with a power density of 320.41 mW m-2. Moreover, 10 continuous hours of evaporation were applied to the composite demonstrating outstanding stability. The composite exhibited high water purification efficiency through solar desalination due to the abundant functional groups on the biochar surface. Finally, the resulting low-cost and highly efficient PCM-based absorber can be used on a wide scale to produce fresh water and energy.

Relationship between the Polymer Blend Using Chitosan, Polyethylene Glycol, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Polyvinylpyrrolidone, and Antimicrobial Activities against Staphylococcus aureus

The findings from Pareto charts, main effect plots, and interaction plots demonstrate the importance of polymer concentration. Increasing concentration improves the inhibition percentage and decreases the MIC50. However, the primary factor that influences these changes is chitosan (CS). Additionally, the interaction between CS and PVP, along with other polymers, plays a crucial role in achieving better antimicrobial effects. These results enhance our understanding of the antimicrobial properties of the studied polymers and offer valuable insights for developing effective antimicrobial formulations. The MIC50 value of M1-M16 was at a polymer percentage of 12.5%. At 12.5% polymer percentage, with the limits of [PVA], [PEG], and [PVP] being 0.002-0.004 g/mL and [CS] being 0.001-0.002 g/mL, using the 2-level full factorial method, the inhibition percentage is equal to 174.1 - 27,812 PVA - 18,561 PVP - 25,960 PEG - 38,752 CS + 9,263,047 PVA*PVP + 10,430,763 PVA*PEG + 15,397,157 PVA*CS + 7,088,313 PVP*PEG + 7,841,221 PVP*CS + 14,228,046 PEG*CS - 3,367,292,860 PVA*PVP*PEG - 5,671,998,721 PVA*PVP*CS - 6,619,041,275 PVA*PEG*CS - 3,917,095,529 PVP*PEG*CS + 2,273,661,969,470 PVA*PVP*PEG*CS. Theoretically, the most economical concentrations of PVA, PVP, PEG, and CS are 0.002, 0.002, 0.002, and 0.001 mg/mL at a concentration of 12.5% to reach an inhibition percentage of 99.162%, which coincides with the MBC value.

Inorganic Sonosensitizers for Sonodynamic Therapy in Cancer Treatment

The rapid development of nanomedicine and nanobiotechnology has allowed the emergence of various therapeutic modalities with excellent therapeutic efficiency and biosafety, among which, the sonodynamic therapy (SDT), a combination of low-intensity ultrasound and sonosensitizers, is emerging as a promising noninvasive treatment modality for cancer treatment due to its deeper penetration, good patient compliance, and minimal damage to normal tissue. The sonosensitizers are indispensable components in the SDT process because their structure and physicochemical properties are decisive for therapeutic efficacy. Compared to the conventional and mostly studied organic sonosensitizers, inorganic sonosensitizers (noble metal-based, transition metal-based, carbon-based, and silicon-based sonosensitizers) display excellent stability, controllable morphology, and multifunctionality, which greatly expand their application in SDT. In this review, the possible mechanisms of SDT including the cavitation effect and reactive oxygen species generation are briefly discussed. Then, the recent advances in inorganic sonosensitizers are systematically summarized and their formulations and antitumor effects, particularly highlighting the strategies for optimizing the therapeutic efficiency, are outlined. The challenges and future perspectives for developing state-of-the-art sonosensitizers are also discussed. It is expected that this review will shed some light on future screening of decent inorganic sonosensitizers for SDT.

Spectrophotometrically, Spectroscopically, Microscopically and Thermogravimetrically Optimized TiO2 and ZnO Nanoparticles and their Bactericidal, Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Potential: A Novel Comparative Approach

Current study was aimed to determine the antibacterial, antioxidant and cytotoxic potential of Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) and Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs). Nanoparticles were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, particle size analyzer (PSA), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by standard agar dilution method. Antibacterial potential of nanoparticles was analyzed by standard disc diffusion method against bacterial strains including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumonia. Different concentrations of NPs (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 mg/mL) were incorporated to evaluate the antimicrobial activity. Antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity of these NPs was analyzed by DPPH method and brine shrimp cytotoxicity assay, respectively. The MIC of TiO2NPs against E. coli, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae was 0.04, 0.08 and 0.07 mg/mL respectively while the MIC of ZnONPs against the above strains was 0.01, 0.015 and 0.01 mg/mL. The maximum zone of inhibition was observed for K. pneumoniae i.e., 20mm and 25mm against TiO2 and ZnO NPs respectively, at 1.4 mg/mL concentration of NPs. The susceptibility of NPs against bacterial strains was evaluated in the following order: K. pneumoniae > P. aeruginosa > E. coli. The antioxidant activity of nanoparticles increased by increasing the concentration of NPs while cytotoxic analysis exhibited non-toxic effect of ZnO NPs while TiO2 had toxic effects on 1.2 and 1.4 mg/mL concentrations. Results revealed that ZnO NPs have more antibacterial and negligible cytotoxic potential in contrast to TiO2 NPs.

Comparative Study of ZnO-and-TiO2-Nanoparticles-Functionalized Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan Bionanocomposites for Multifunctional Biomedical Applications

This study aimed to synthesize chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA)-based zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) hybrid bionanocomposites (BNCs) and observe their comparative accomplishment against the skin cancer cell line, A431, and antioxidant potential. CS was blended with PVA to form polymeric films reinforced with the immobilization of ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), separately. The optimization of the BNCs was done via physicochemical studies, viz. moisture content, swelling ratio, and contact angle measurements. The free radical scavenging activity was observed for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl, and the antibacterial assay against the Escherichia coli strain showed a higher zone of inhibition. Furthermore, the anticancer activity of the synthesized BNCs was revealed against the skin cancer cell line A431 under varying concentrations of 50, 100, 150, 200, and 300 μg/mL. The anticancer study revealed a high percent of cancerous cell inhibition (70%) in ZnO BNCs as compared to (61%) TiO2 BNCs in a dose-dependent manner.

Preparation, characterization, and evaluation of antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of chitosan-polyethylene glycol nanoparticles loaded with amoxicillin as a novel drug delivery system

In this study, nanoparticles of amoxicillin (AMX) were prepared using chitosan (CHI) and polyethylene glycol (PEG). The physicochemical properties of the particles were investigated by FT-IR, DSC, SEM, and zeta potential analyses. The nanoparticles showed a spherical shape, and the average size of formulations was within the range of 696.20 ± 24.86 - 359.53 ± 7.41 nm. Zeta potential data demonstrated that the formulations had positive surface charges with a zeta potential range of 21.38 ± 2.28 - 7.73 ± 1.66 mV. FTIR analysis showed that the drug was successfully entrapped in the nanoparticles. DSC results suggested that the drug was present in amorphous form in the polymer matrix. In vitro release studies demonstrated that the release pattern consisted of two phases, with an initial burst release followed by a controlled and sustained release. The MTT assay results on mouse fibroblast cell line indicated that the prepared formulations did not affect the viability of the cells. In the in vitro antibacterial activity test, it was found that the drug-loaded nanoparticles have AMX-equivalent antibacterial activity against E. coli, and S. aureus. These findings revealed that the obtained nanoparticles might be a promising and safe nanocarrier system for efficient delivery of AMX.

Fabrication of Biogenic Titanium Nanoparticles and Investigating Their Biological Properties for Dental Applications

INTRODUCTION

Oral inflammation, often triggered by infections, injuries, or immune responses, can compromise treatment outcomes, delay healing, and contribute to patient discomfort. The development of green nanoparticle synthesis methods is receiving attention due to their potential advantages over existing approaches. These procedures use commonly available, affordable, and environmentally friendly natural plant extracts. Due to their numerous uses in various industries, titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) have attracted the most attention among the nanoparticles. In this study, we present the green synthesis of Myristica fragrans (mace) extract as a reductant and stabilizer for the production of curcumin-functionalized TiO2NPs (CTN). We additionally evaluated the effectiveness of these nanoparticles as anti-inflammatory agents.

OBJECTIVE

In this study, we aim to develop biogenic TiO2NPs using Myristica fragrans as a natural capping agent and functionalized with curcumin for effectively managing oral inflammation in dental applications.

METHODS

The nanoparticles were synthesized using the green synthesis method and characterized using various characterization techniques. Biocompatibility was evaluated using hemolytic assays, and the bioactivity of the nanoparticles was assessed using anti-inflammatory assays.

RESULTS

Curcumin-coated M-TiO2NPs (MCTN) were successfully synthesized and characterized by various techniques, confirming their morphology, crystallinity, functionalization, elemental composition, size, and stability. In vitro bioactivity studies revealed that MCTN exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity, as evidenced by the inhibition of protein denaturation with minimal hemolytic potential. These findings highlight the potential of MCTN as a promising candidate for anti-inflammatory applications.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that MCTN exhibits promising anti-inflammatory and anti-hemolytic properties. However, further in-depth in vivo analysis is required to fully understand their efficacy and toxicity.

Zeolite Nanoparticles Loaded with 2-Methoxystradiol as a Novel Drug Delivery System for the Prostate Cancer Therapy

The estrogen metabolite 2-methoxyestradiol (2ME) is a promissory anticancer drug mainly because of its pro-apoptotic properties in cancer cells. However, the therapeutic use of 2ME has been hampered due to its low solubility and bioavailability. Thus, it is necessary to find new ways of administration for 2ME. Zeolites are inorganic aluminosilicates with a porous structure and are considered good adsorbents and sieves in the pharmaceutical field. Here, mordenite-type zeolite nanoparticles were loaded with 2ME to assess its efficiency as a delivery system for prostate cancer treatment. The 2ME-loaded zeolite nanoparticles showed an irregular morphology with a mean hydrodynamic diameter of 250.9 ± 11.4 nm, polydispersity index of 0.36 ± 0.04, and a net negative surface charge of -34 ± 1.73 meV. Spectroscopy with UV-vis and Attenuated Total Reflectance Infrared Fourier-Transform was used to elucidate the interaction between the 2ME molecules and the zeolite framework showing the formation of a 2ME-zeolite conjugate in the nanocomposite. The studies of adsorption and liberation determined that zeolite nanoparticles incorporated 40% of 2ME while the liberation of 2ME reached 90% at pH 7.4 after 7 days. The 2ME-loaded zeolite nanoparticles also decreased the viability and increased the mRNA of the 2ME-target gene F-spondin, encoded by SPON1, in the human prostate cancer cell line LNCaP. Finally, the 2ME-loaded nanoparticles also decreased the viability of primary cultures from mouse prostate cancer. These results show the development of 2ME-loaded zeolite nanoparticles with physicochemical and biological properties compatible with anticancer activity on the human prostate and highlight that zeolite nanoparticles can be a good carrier system for 2ME.

Trigger of apoptosis in human liver cancer cell line (HepG2) by titanium dioxide nanoparticles functionalized by glutamine and conjugated with thiosemicarbazone

The incidence of liver cancer, the third cause of cancer-associated death, has been growing, worldwide. The increasing trend of liver cancer incidence and mortality indicates the inefficiency of current therapeutic approaches, especially anticancer chemotherapy. Owing to the promising anticancer potential of Thiosemicarbazone (TSC) complexes, this work was conducted to synthesize titanium oxide nanoparticles conjugated with TSC through glutamine functionalization (TiO2@Gln-TSC NPs) and characterize their anticancer mechanism in HepG2 liver cancer cells. Physicochemical analyses of the synthesized particles, including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, Zeta potential and DLS, and EDS-mapping confirmed the proper synthesis and conjugation of TiO2@Gln-TSC NPs. The synthesized NPs were almost spherical, with a size range of 10-80 nm, a zeta potential of - 57.8 mV, a hydrodynamic size of 127 nm, and without impurities. Investigation of the cytotoxic effect of TiO2@Gln-TSC in HepG2 and HEK293 human normal cells indicated significantly higher toxicity in cancer cells (IC50 = 75 µg/mL) than normal cells (IC50 = 210 µg/mL). Flow cytometry analysis of TiO2@Gln-TSC treated and control cells showed that the population of apoptotic cells considerably increased from 2.8 to 27.3% after treatment with the NPs. Moreover, 34.1% of the TiO2@Gln-TSC treated cells were mainly arrested at the sub-G1 phase of the cell cycle, which was significantly greater than control cells (8.4%). The Hoechst staining assay showed considerable nuclear damage, including chromatin fragmentation and the appearance of apoptotic bodies. This work introduced TiO2@Gln-TSC NPs as a promising anticancer compound that could combat liver cancer cells through apoptosis induction.

Microplastics in facial cleanser: extraction, identification, potential toxicity, and continuous-flow removal using agricultural waste-based biochar

Microplastic (MP) is an emerging contaminant of concern due to its ubiquitous quantity in the environment, small size, and potential toxicity due to strong affinity towards other contaminants. In this work, MP particles (5-300 μm) were extracted from a commercial facial cleanser and determined to be irregular polyethylene (PE) microbeads based on characterization with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The potential of extracted MP acting as toxic pollutants' vector was analyzed via adsorption of methylene blue and methyl orange dye where significant dye uptake was observed. Synthetic wastewater containing the extracted MP was subjected to a continuous-flow column study using palm kernel shell and coconut shell biochar as the filter/adsorbent media. The prepared biochar was characterized via proximate and ultimate analysis, FESEM, contact angle measurement, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to investigate the role of the biochar properties in MP removal. MP removal performance was determined by measuring the turbidity and weighing the dry mass of particles remaining in the effluent following treatment. Promising results were obtained from the study with highest removal of MP (96.65%) attained through palm kernel shell biochar with particle size of 0.6-1.18 mm and continuous-flow column size of 20 mm.

Enhanced photo-Fenton activity and stability for sulfamethoxazole degradation by FeS2@TiO2 heterojunction derived from MIL-125

FT-x composites with core-shell structure (FT = FeS₂@TiO₂, x represents the mass ratio of the used FeCl₃·6H₂O to MIL-125) were fabricated by a hydrothermal method using MIL-125(Ti) as a self-sacrificing template. Both the photo-Fenton activity and stability of the FT-1 were improved greatly in comparison with its counterparts due to the unique core-shell structure and synergistic effect between FeS₂ and TiO₂. Especially, the Fe leaching concentration of FT-1 was approximately 1/10 of the individual FeS₂, benefiting from the protection effect of TiO₂ shell. Under dark condition, the formed FeOOH occupied active sites and inhibited iron cycle as well as H₂O₂ decomposition, leading to the inactivation of FT-1. UV light irradiation not only boosted the catalytic activity but also prevented the FT-1 from reactivity decline owning to the regeneration of Fe²⁺ by photogenerated electrons and continuous generation of ·OH. Experimental and DFT calculation results indicated that a type-II heterojunction was formed, in which photogenerated electrons were transferred from FeS₂ core to TiO₂ shell, accelerating charge separation and further boosting sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. FT-1 displayed outstanding photo-Fenton activity in wide pH ranged from 2 to 6 and good anti-interfering ability toward impurities in water matrix. Besides, the reusability of FT-1 was good, in which 90% SMX degradation was maintained even after 5 runs. Noteworthy, the photo-Fenton activity was recovered via a revulcanization process, in which FeOOH was completely transformed into FeS₂. This founding provided insights for the design and construction of heterojunction with both excellent photo-Fenton activity and stability.

The Encapsulation of Natural Organic Dyes on TiO2 for Photochromism Control

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) plays a pivotal role in photocatalytic reactions and holds great promise for the cosmetic and paint industries due to its white color and high refractive index. However, the original color of TiO₂ changes gradually to blue or yellow with UV irradiation, which affects its color realization. We encapsulated TiO₂ with several natural organic dye compounds, including purpurin, curcumin, and safflower, to control its photochromism and realize a range of different colors. The chemical reaction between TiO₂ and dyes based on their functional group was investigated, and the light absorption was tested via FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The changes in morphology and size distribution additionally supported their successful encapsulation. The discoloration after UV irradiation was evaluated by measuring the color difference (ΔE) of control TiO₂ and dye encapsulated TiO₂. The unique structure utilized natural dyes to preserve photochromism based on the physical barrier and automatically controlled the electronic transition of core TiO₂. In particular, the color difference values of purpurin and curcumin were 4.05 and 3.76, which is lower than the 5.36 of the control TiO₂. Dye encapsulated TiO₂ was manipulated into lipstick to verify its color realization and retention.

Fabrication of optimal oxygen vacancy amount in P/Ag/Ag2O/Ag3PO4/TiO2 through a green photoreduction process for sustainable H2 evolution under solar light

Defects engineering on photocatalysts such as oxygen vacancies (OVs) is an effective approach for improving photocatalytic hydrogen (H₂) evolution efficiency. In this study, OVs modified P/Ag/Ag₂O/Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ (PAgT) composite was successfully fabricated via a photoreduction process by controlling the ratio of PAgT to ethanol (16, 12, 8, 6 and 4 g·L^-1) under simulated solar light irradiation for the first time. Characterization methods confirmed the presence of OVs in the modified catalysts. Meanwhile, the OVs amount and their effects on the light absorption ability, charge transfer rate, conduction band and H₂ evolution efficiency of the catalysts were also investigated. The results indicated that the optimal OVs amount endowed OVs-PAgT-12 with the strongest light absorption, the fastest electron transfer rate and suitable band gap for H₂ evolution, leading to the highest H₂ yield (863 μmol·h^-1·g^-1) under solar light irradiation. Moreover, OVs-PAgT-12 exhibited a superior stability during cyclic experiment, indicating its great potential for practical application. Furthermore, a sustainable H₂ evolution process was proposed based on a combination of sustainable bio-ethanol resource, stable OVs-PAgT, abundant solar energy and recyclable methanol. This study would provide new insights into the design of defects modified composite photocatalyst for enhanced solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Titanium Dioxide Thin Films Produced on FTO Substrate Using the Sol-Gel Process: The Effect of the Dispersant on Optical, Surface and Electrochemical Features

In this study, TiO₂ thin films formed by dip-coating on an FTO substrate were obtained and characterized using surface, optical and electrochemical techniques. The impact of the dispersant (polyethylene glycol-PEG) on the surface (morphology, wettability, surface energy), optical (band gap and Urbach energy) and electrochemical (charge-transfer resistance, flat band potential) properties were investigated. When PEG was added to the sol-gel solution, the optical gap energy of the resultant films was reduced from 3.25 to 3.12 eV, and the Urbach energy increased from 646 to 709 meV. The dispersant addition in the sol-gel process influences surface features, as evidenced by lower contact-angle values and higher surface energy achieved for a compact film with a homogenous nanoparticle structure and larger crystallinity size. Electrochemical measurements (cycle voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the Mott-Schottky technique) revealed improved catalytic properties of the TiO₂ film, due to a higher insertion/extraction rate of protons into the TiO₂ nanostructure, as well as a decrease in charge-transfer resistance from 418 k to 23.4 k and a decrease in flat band potential from 0.055 eV to -0.019 eV. The obtained TiO₂ films are a promising alternative for technological applications, due to their advantageous surface, optical and electrochemical features.

Photodynamic Activity of TMPyP4/TiO2 Complex under Blue Light in Human Melanoma Cells: Potential for Cancer-Selective Therapy

The combination of TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) and photosensitizers (PS) may offer significant advantages in photodynamic therapy (PDT) of melanoma, such as improved cell penetration, enhanced ROS production, and cancer selectivity. In this study, we aimed to investigate the photodynamic effect of 5,10,15,20-(Tetra-N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrin tetratosylate (TMPyP4) complexes with TiO₂ NPs on human cutaneous melanoma cells by irradiation with 1 mW/cm² blue light. The porphyrin conjugation with the NPs was analyzed by absorption and FTIR spectroscopy. The morphological characterization of the complexes was performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering. The singlet oxygen generation was analyzed by phosphorescence at 1270 nm. Our predictions indicated that the non-irradiated investigated porphyrin has a low degree of toxicity. The photodynamic activity of the TMPyP4/TiO₂ complex was assessed on the human melanoma Mel-Juso cell line and non-tumor skin CCD-1070Sk cell line treated with various concentrations of the PS and subjected to dark conditions and visible light-irradiation. The tested complexes of TiO₂ NPs with TMPyP4 presented cytotoxicity only after activation by blue light (405 nm) mediated by the intracellular production of ROS in a dose-dependent manner. The photodynamic effect observed in this evaluation was higher in melanoma cells than the effect observed in the non-tumor cell line, demonstrating a promising potential for cancer-selectivity in PDT of melanoma.

Fundamentals and Applications of Raman-Based Techniques for the Design and Development of Active Biomedical Materials

Raman spectroscopy is an analytical method based on light-matter interactions that can interrogate the vibrational modes of matter and provide representative molecular fingerprints. Mediated by its label-free, non-invasive nature, and high molecular specificity, Raman-based techniques have become ubiquitous tools for in situ characterization of materials. This review comprehensively describes the theoretical and practical background of Raman spectroscopy and its advanced variants. The numerous facets of material characterization that Raman scattering can reveal, including biomolecular identification, solid-to-solid phase transitions, and spatial mapping of biomolecular species in bioactive materials, are highlighted. The review illustrates the potential of these techniques in the context of active biomedical material design and development by highlighting representative studies from the literature. These studies cover the use of Raman spectroscopy for the characterization of both natural and synthetic biomaterials, including engineered tissue constructs, biopolymer systems, ceramics, and nanoparticle formulations, among others. To increase the accessibility and adoption of these techniques, the present review also provides the reader with practical recommendations on the integration of Raman techniques into the experimental laboratory toolbox. Finally, perspectives on how recent developments in plasmon- and coherently-enhanced Raman spectroscopy can propel Raman from underutilized to critical for biomaterial development are provided.

Removal of ceftriaxone sodium antibiotic from pharmaceutical wastewater using an activated carbon based TiO2 composite: Adsorption and photocatalytic degradation evaluation

The water pollution becomes a serious concern for the sustainability of ecosystems due to the existence of pharmaceutical products (ceftriaxone (CEF) antibiotic). Even in low concentration of CEF has lethal effects on ecosystem and human health. To remove CEF, TiO₂ is considered as an effective and efficient nanoparticles, however its performance is reduced due to wider energy gap and rapid recombination of charge carriers. In this study, activated carbon based TiO₂ (ACT-X) heterogeneous nanocomposites were synthesized to improve the intrinsic properties of TiO₂ and their adsorption-photocatalytic performance for the removal of CEF. The characterization results revealed that ACT-X composites have slower recombination of charge carriers, lower energy band gap (3.05 eV), and better light absorption under visible region of light. From ACT-X composites, the ACT-4 photocatalyst has achieved highest photocatalytic degradation (99.6%) and COD removal up (99.2%). The results of radical scavengers showed that photocatalytic degradation of CEF is mainly occurred due to superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. Meanwhile, the reusability of ACT-4 up to five cycles shows more than 80% photocatalytic degradation, which make the process more economical. The highest experimental adsorption capacity is achieved up to 844.8 mg g^-1 using ACT-4. The favorable and multilayer heterogeneous adsorption is carried out according to the well-fitted data with pseudo-second-order and Freundlich models, respectively. These results indicate that the carbon-based TiO₂ composites can be used as a green, stable, efficient, effective, reusable, renewable, and sustainable photocatalyst to eliminate the pharmaceutical pollutants (antibiotics) via adsorption and photocatalytic degradation processes.

Micro-Raman spectroscopic analysis of liquid-liquid phase separation

Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) plays a significant role in various biological processes, including the formation of membraneless organelles and pathological protein aggregation. Although many studies have found various factors that modulate the LLPS process or the liquid-to-solid phase transition (LSPT) using microscopy or fluorescence-based methods, the molecular mechanistic details underlying LLPS and protein aggregation within liquid droplets remain uncharacterized. Therefore, structural information on proteins inside liquid droplets is required to understand the mechanistic link to amyloid formation. In the present study, we monitored droplet formation related to protein fibrillation using micro-Raman spectroscopy in combination with differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy to study the conformational change in proteins and the hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) structure of water during LLPS. Interestingly, we found that the O-D stretching band for water (HOD in H₂O) inside the droplets exhibited a distinct Raman spectrum from that of the bulk water, suggesting that the time-dependent change in the hydration environment in the protein droplets during the process of LLPS can be studied. These results demonstrate that the superior spatial resolution of micro-Raman spectroscopy offers significant advantages in investigating the molecular mechanisms of LLPS and following LSPT processes.

Nile Tilapia Skin Impregnated with Antibacterial Silver/Titanium Dioxide Compounds

The development of alternative (and free-of-antibiotics) antibacterial and antibiofilm agents is an important strategy to circumvent the resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. Herein, we explore the production of mixed oxides by incorporating silver nanoparticles in titanium dioxide as a silver concentration-dependent antibacterial agent that is further incorporated in Tilapia fish skin (a promising prototype of xenograft), integrating the antibacterial activity of mixed oxide into the intrinsic properties of Tilapia skin. The antibiofilm activity of samples prepared with high concentrations of silver (10 wt% of precursor AgNO3) has been considered a good antibiofilm response. The influence of silver content is also observed with respect to the minimum bactericidal concentration, which is reduced to 3.13 mg/mL with a characteristic kill time in the order of 30 min that is associated with antibiofilm activity in biofilm-forming strains of Staphylococcus aureus. These results indicate that modified Tilapia fish skin acquires antibacterial behavior and can be explored for xenografts with prospective applications in the light-dependent actuation of TiO2-based compounds.

Enhancing the Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2 for the Degradation of Congo Red Dye by Adjusting the Ultrasonication Regime Applied in Its Synthesis Procedure

Recently, the ultrasound-assisted sol-gel synthesis procedure of mesoporous titania (TiO2) photocatalysts caught the researcher’s attention, due to the physicochemical properties enhancement of the resulting titania nanomaterials. Thus, by varying different synthesis parameters particular characteristics could be obtained. In the present study, the ultrasound pulse on/off ratio has been considered and the effect of the envisaged parameter on the textural, morphological, and optical features of titania nanomaterial has been investigated. Therefore, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2-sorption measurements, SEM imaging, and UV-Vis Diffuse Reflectance spectroscopy (UVDR) have been used. And further, the photocatalytic activity of the prepared TiO2 materials was evaluated by the features developed about the applied ultrasound pulse on/off ratio as 1/1, 2/1, 3/1, 4/1, 1/3 and 2/2. It was found that the ultrasound pulse on/off ratio considered in the synthesis procedure of titania leads to TiO2 materials with different textural (SBET = 98–156 m2/g), morphological, and optical (Eg = 3.1–3.2 eV) characteristics. For this reason, TiO2 nanomaterials prepared were found to exhibit suitable features for photocatalytic applications. Thus, the TiO2 4.1 sample prepared at 4/1 ultrasound pulse on/off ratio revealed the highest photodegradation efficiency of Congo Red dye (98.28%) as the results of photocatalytic tests show. More than that, a possible reaction mechanism of the CR photodegradation process through the contribution of reactive oxygen species (·HO, ·O2−), holes (h+), and electrons (e−) of developed titania photocatalyst was proposed.

Potential of low-cost TiO2-PVC composite in photoelectrocatalytic degradation of reactive orange 16 under visible light

In recent years, previously reported studies revealed a high efficiency of pollutant degradation by coupling photocatalysis and electrochemical processes (PECs) using titanium dioxide (TiO₂) photoelectrode rather than using photocatalysis or electrocatalysis alone. However, some of the TiO₂ photoelectrodes that have been reported were not cost-effective. This is due to the use of expensive chemicals and certain expensive equipment in the fabrication process, other than involving complicated preparation steps. Therefore, this study is aimed at investigating the PEC performance and stability of low-cost TiO₂-polyvinyl chloride (TiO₂-PVC) composite photoelectrode for Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) degradation. The materials characterisation using the ATR-FTIR, XRD and UV-Vis DRS proved that TiO₂ and TiO₂-PVC were successfully synthesised. The micrograph obtained for the surface characterisation using the FESEM showed that the smooth surface of freshly prepared photoelectrodes turned slightly rough with tiny pits formation after five continuous PEC processes. Nevertheless, the photoelectrode retained its original shape in good condition for further PEC processes. By PEC process, the fabricated photoelectrode showed 99.4% and 51.1% of colour and total organic carbon (TOC) removal, respectively, at optimised PEC parameters (1.0 mol L^-1 NaCl concentration, 10 V applied voltage, 120 min degradation time and initial pH 2). Moreover, the fabricated photoelectrode demonstrated sufficient reusability potential (~ 96.3%) after five cycles of PEC processes. In summary, a low-cost and stable composite photoelectrode with high efficiency in RO16 degradation was successfully fabricated and could be potentially applied for other emerging pollutants degradation via the PEC degradation technique.

Ultrasonic Preparation of PN for the Photodegradation of 17β-Estradiol in Water and Biotoxicity Assessment of 17β-Estradiol after Degradation

This study prepares a novel phosphorene (PN) and loads it onto TiO2 to fabricate PN-TiO2 and effectively photodegrade the hydrophobic environmental hormone 17β-estradiol in aqueous solutions. The effect of the PN on degradation efficiency is systematically investigated. It is observed that the doping of TiO2 with PN significantly enhances its photocatalytic and adsorption properties compared with that in the absence of PN; that is, the addition improves the adsorption capability of the composite. The optimal PN weight content is found to be 0.5%. The performance of the PN-TiO2 photocatalyst in degrading E2 is around 67.5%. However, its photodegradation efficiency gradually decreases when the PN content is further increased. This optimal PN content directly suggests synergistic interactions affecting the photodegrading efficiency. Compared with other PN-based photocatalysts mentioned in the literature, this PN-based material possesses striking advantages, such as higher energy efficiency, greater removal capacity, and superior cost-effectiveness. Further, the decrease in the biotoxicity of the water after treatment is evident in observing the development of zebrafish embryos. The studies of the catalyst performed on the zebrafish show that it results in a higher mortality rate at 96 h with a superior hatching rate and healthy fish development. In summary, the prepared PN-based materials exhibited promising photocatalytic capabilities for the removal and biotoxicity reduction of 17β-estradiol in aqueous solutions.

Efficient NiO/F-TiO2 nanocomposites for 4-chlorophenol photodegradation

This work aimed to study NiO/F-TiO₂ composites in the photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenol. F-TiO₂ support was prepared by in-situ fluorination of TiO₂ using the sol-gel method. The heterostructured materials were prepared by wet impregnation method, varying NiO content (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0% wt). The solids were characterized by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectrophotometry, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The characterization studies showed that the coupling of TiO₂ with fluoride ions promoted the generation of ≡Ti-F surface species that could be responsible for the decrease in the recombination frequency of charge carriers and the increased photoactivity. In addition, it was found that the coupling of NiO/F-TiO₂ semiconductors improved the photocatalytic properties of the fluorinated support, obtaining higher percentages of degradation and mineralization of the phenolic contaminant. These results are possibly a consequence of factors such as the formation of larger crystallites, lower band gap energies, and the generation of p-n type interfacial heterojunctions that potentiate the proper separation of electron-hole pairs. An effect of NiO content on photoactivity was observed, being a percentage of 1.0% wt the optimum in this photocatalytic treatment.

A deep eutectic solvent-assisted electrochemical synthesis of TGA capped CdSe@Cu2Se core-shell quantum dots on the graphene-modified electrode as a catalytic platform for the determination of pyrazinamide

A two-step and fast electrochemical approach for the synthesis of CdSe@ Cu₂Se core-shell quantum dots is applied in the mixture of ethylene glycol-based deep eutectic solvent and 5% water as a green media to modify the graphene film-coated glassy carbon electrode for fabricating a sensitive surface. The quantum dots particles were systematically characterized by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectroscopy, UV-visible and Fluorescence emission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. The results show the existence of a second-order chemical reaction after occurring the electron transfer reaction for pyrazinamide. The CdSe@Cu₂Se modified graphene-coated glassy carbon electrode was successfully used for the determination of pyrazinamide by differential pulse voltammetry method under the optimized conditions (pH = 2) in the range of 0.4-10 μM with a corresponding detection limit of 0.37 μM. The proposed modified sensor demonstrated high selectivity, reproducibility, stability in the pharmaceutical tablets, urine, and human blood serum and high recoveries in the range of 97.9-101.9% were obtained.

Removing methylene blue from water: A study of sorption effectiveness onto nanoparticles-doped activated carbon

In this present study, silver (Ag) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles were successfully deposited on coconut shell-derived activated carbon (CSAC), to synthesize a novel nanocomposite (CSAC@AgNPs@TiO₂NPs) for the adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from aqueous solution. The fabricated CSAC@AgNPs@TiO₂NPs nanocomposite was analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) equipped with Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) detector, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscope (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The successful deposition of AgNPs and TiO₂NPs on CSAC surface was revealed by the TEM/EDX, SEM, and XPS analysis. The mesopore structure of CSAC@AgNPs@TiO₂NPs has a BET surface area of 301 m²/g. The batch adsorption studies were conducted and the influence of different parameters, i.e., adsorbent dose, adsorption time, initial dye concentration, pH and temperature were investigated. The nonlinear isotherm and kinetic modelling demonstrated that adsorption data were best fitted by Sips isotherm and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of MB onto CSAC@AgNPs@TiO₂NPs by the Sips model was 184 mg/g. Thermodynamic results revealed that the adsorption was endothermic, spontaneous and physical in nature. CSAC@AgNPs@TiO₂NPs revealed that MB absorption by CSAC@AgNPs@TiO₂NPs was spontaneous and endothermic. The uptake capacity of MB was influenced significantly by the presence of competing ions including, NO₃^-, HCO_3, Ca²⁺, and Na⁺. Repeated tests indicated that the CSAC@AgNPs@TiO₂NPs can be regenerated and reused six times before being discarded. The primary separation mechanism between MB dye and CSAC@AgNPs@TiO₂NPs was the electrostatic interaction. Thus, CSAC@AgNPs@TiO₂NPs was an outstanding material, which displayed good applicability in real water with ≥ 97% removal of MB dye.

Study on the Wood Characteristics of the Chinese Ancient Ship Luoyang I

Luoyang No.1 is a Qing Dynasty (1644-1902) inland river ancient wooden shipwreck discovered in September 2013. It adds significantly to the study of Grand Canal transport history and Luoyang's economic history. The wood characteristics of Luoyang No.1 were investigated in this study using chemical compositions, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nano-indentation (NI), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the holocellulose content was only 32.84-37.69%, indicating that the cellulose and hemicellulose had been seriously degraded. Based on the XRD pattern, the degree of crystallinity of cellulose in wood ranged from 19.82 to 22.83%. The nano-indentation demonstrated that compared with the undegraded contemporary wood, the elastic modulus and hardness of the ancient ship wood decreased by 45.5% and 32.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the FTIR spectra revealed that the biological deterioration of ancient wood was indicated by a decrease in the peaks related to cellulose and hemicellulose, but the change in lignin was insignificant. The results could provide knowledge for appropriate dewatering, strengthening, restoration strategies and regulation of the museum environment.

Photocatalytic activity of visible-light-driven L-Proline-TiO2/BiOBr nanostructured materials for dyes degradation: The role of generated reactive species

L-Proline (2%)-TiO₂/BiOBr (30%) nanocomposite was synthesized to obtain high photocatalytic performance in the visible light region and infrared radiation(IR) for methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR) removal from the contaminated wastewater. L-Proline (2%)-TiO₂/BiOBr (30%) photocatalyst with strong absorption near IR wavelength and high charge separation ability was fabricated for the first time. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM)/Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) characterization techniques show that the visible driven nanocomposite was successfully synthesized. According to the UV-DRS analysis, the estimated band gaps for the L-proline (2%)-TiO₂ and L-Proline (2%)-TiO₂/BiOBr (30%) nanostructures were respectively 2.3 eV and 2.1 eV.The nanoparticles exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity (93-100%) and high mineralization efficiency (71-89% TOC removal) for both the dyes. The best photocatalytic activity was achieved by adding 2 wt% of L-Proline and 30 wt% of BiOBr into TiO₂ sol. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to find significant parameters and their optimum values for maximum degradation, which show pH, dye concentration, irradiation time, and catalyst dosage for both the dyes are significant. The best photocatalytic degradation efficiency was achieved at the optimum conditions of pH = 7.7, catalyst dosage = 0.71 g/L, irradiation time = 142 and dye concentration = 11 mg/L for MB. Scavenger study showed that •OH radicals are responsible for the degradation process.

Spectroscopic Investigations of Porphyrin-TiO2 Nanoparticles Complexes

This study presents the spectral characterization of TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) functionalized with three porphyrin derivatives: 5,10,15,20-(Tetra-4-aminophenyl) porphyrin (TAPP), 5,10,15,20-(Tetra-4-methoxyphenyl) porphyrin (TMPP), and 5,10,15,20-(Tetra-4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP). UV-Vis absorption and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopic studies of these porphyrins and their complexes with TiO₂ NPs were performed. In addition, the efficiency of singlet oxygen generation, the key species in photodynamic therapy, was investigated. UV-Vis absorption spectra of the NPs complexes showed the characteristic bands of porphyrins. These allowed us to determine the loaded porphyrins on TiO₂ NPs functionalized with porphyrins. FTIR-ATR revealed the formation of porphyrin-TiO₂ complexes, suggesting that porphyrin adsorption on TiO₂ may involve the pyrroles in the porphyrin ring, or the radicals of the porphyrin derivative. The quantum yield for singlet oxygen generation by the studied porphyrin complexes with TiO₂ was higher compared to bare porphyrins for TAPP and TMPP, while for the TCPP-TiO₂ NPs complex, a decrease was observed, but still maintained a good efficiency. The TiO₂ NPs conjugates can be promising candidates to be tested in photodynamic therapy in vitro assays.

Synthesis and Characterization of Calcium Alginate-Based Microspheres Entrapped with TiO2 Nanoparticles and Cinnamon Essential Oil Targeting Clinical Staphylococcus aureus

It is important to create new generations of materials that can destroy multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, which are a serious public health concern. This study focused on the biosynthesis of an essential oil entrapped in titanium dioxide (TiO₂) calcium alginate-based microspheres. In this research, calcium alginate-based microspheres with entrapped TiO₂ nanoparticles and cinnamon essential oil (CI-TiO₂-MSs) were synthesized, using an aqueous extract of Nigella sativa seeds for TiO₂ nanoparticle preparation, and the ionotropic gelation method for microsphere preparation. The microspheres obtained were spherical, uniformly sized, microporous, and rough surfaced, and they were fully loaded with cinnamon essential oil and TiO₂ nanoparticles. The synthesized microspheres were analyzed for antibacterial activity against the clinical multidrug-resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus. Disc diffusion and flow cytometry analysis revealed strong antibacterial activity by CI-TiO₂-MSs. The synthesized CI-TiO₂-MSs were characterized by the SEM/EDX, X-ray diffraction, and FTIR techniques. Results showed that the TiO₂ nanoparticles were spherical and 99 to 150 nm in size, whereas the CI-TiO₂-MSs were spherical and rough surfaced. Apoptosis analysis and SEM micrography revealed that the CI-TiO₂-MSs had strong bactericidal activity against S. aureus. The in vitro antibacterial experiments proved that the encapsulated CI-TiO₂-MSs had strong potential for use as a prolonged controlled release system against multidrug-resistant clinical S. aureus.

Preparation and Tribological Properties of a Multilayer Graphene-Reinforced TiO2 Composite Nanolubricant Additive

The unique structure and physical properties of graphene and anatase TiO₂ make them suitable for use as additives for engine lubricants. This study describes the use of dielectric barrier discharge plasma-assisted ball milling to synthesize a multilayer graphene-reinforced TiO₂ composite nanolubricant additive (MGTC). A variety of physical and chemical tests were performed to characterize the resulting experimental materials, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Four-ball friction and wear testing machines were used to study the tribological properties and extreme pressure anti-wear properties of a base oil containing 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 wt % of the modified TiO₂. Raman spectroscopy, XPS, SEM, and energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analyses were used to examine and analyze the microstructure of the friction pairs. As a result of the plasma-assisted ball milling process, expanded graphite was successfully separated into multilayer graphene nanosheets, and spherical TiO₂ was successfully bonded to the nanosheets of the multilayer graphene. The 1.0 wt % composite oil was found to provide good friction reduction and wear resistance. It had a film thickness of 27.5 nm, which was 167% thicker than base oil. Due to its excellent dispersion stability, the MGTC nanocomposite exhibited excellent lubrication performance, which was attributed to the formation of carbon protective films, titanium dioxide deposition films, transfer films, and the occurrence of nano ball effects on the surface of friction pairs.

Development of Copper Nanoparticle Conjugated Chitosan Microparticle as a Stable Source of 2nm Copper Nanoparticle Effective against Methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus

BACKGROUND

Copper nanoparticle (CuNP) has well-established antimicrobial activity. Instability in an aqueous medium due to aggregation into larger particles, conversion into metal ions, and oxidation into metal oxides are the major limitations of its practical use against bacterial infections.

OBJECTIVE

Development of CuNP Conjugated Chitosan Microparticles as a reservoir that will release CuNP effective against notorious bacteria like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

METHODS

CuNP conjugated chitosan microparticles (CNCCM) were synthesized using a simple twostep process. In the first step, a solution of chitosan in 2% (w/v) ascorbic acid was added dropwise in copper sulphate solution to prepare Cu ion conjugated chitosan beads. In the second step, these beads were soaked in sodium hydroxide solution to get the CNCCM. The dried CNCCM were characterized thoroughly for surface conjugation of CuNP, and the release of CuNP in a suitable medium. The physicochemical properties of release CuNP were further verified with the in silico modelled CuNP. The Antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of released CuNp were evaluated against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

RESULTS

2% (w/v) ascorbic acid solution (pH 3.5) was the optimum medium for the release of ~2 nm CuNP from CNCCM. The CuNP had an optical band gap of ~ 2 eV. It inhibited the cell wall synthesis of MRSA. The minimum inhibitory concentration was 200 nM. At 100 nM dose, the CuNP caused ~73% reduction in biofilm development after 24 h of growth. The cytotoxic effect of CuNP on the human cell line (HEK 293) was significantly less than that on MRSA. The 48 h IC₅₀ value against HEK 293 was 3.45-fold higher than the MIC value against MRSA after 24 h treatment.

CONCLUSION

CuNP Conjugated Chitosan Microparticle has been developed. It works as a stable reservoir of ~2 nm CuNP. The CuNP is released in an aqueous medium containing 2% (w/v) ascorbic acid (pH 3.5). The released CuNP has a bacteriostatic effect against MRSA at a concentration safe for human cells.

Synthesis of Biodegradable Polyester-Polyether with Enhanced Hydrophilicity, Thermal Stability, Toughness, and Degradation Rate

Novel poly(butylene succinate-butylene furandicarboxylate/polyethylene glycol succinate) (PBSF-PEG) was synthesized using two-step transesterification and polycondensation in the melt. There are characterized by intrinsic viscosity, GPC, ¹H NMR, DSC, TGA, tensile, water absorption tests, and water degradation at different pH. GPC analysis showed that PBSF-PEG had high molecular weight with average molecular weight (M_w) up to 13.68 × 10⁴ g/mol. Tensile tests showed that these polymers possessed good mechanical properties with a tensile strength as high as 30 MPa and elongation at break reaching 1500%. It should be noted that the increase of PEG units improved the toughness of the polyester material. In addition, the introduction of PEG promoted the water degradation properties of PBSF, and the copolymer showed a significantly faster water degradation rate when the PEG unit content was 20%. This suggests that the amount of PEG introduced could be applied to regulate the water degradation rate of the copolymers. Hence, these new polymers have great potential for application as environmentally friendly and sustainable plastic packaging materials.
