Abstract
Background In recent years, the incidence of depression, recognized as a serious psychological disorder, has escalated rapidly. Rehmannia glutinosa DC. (Scrophulariaceae; Rehmanniae Radix, Crude drug) and Lilium lancifolium Thunb. (Liliaceae; Lilii bulbus, Crude drug) constitute a classic anti-depressant combination, exhibiting pharmacological effects that include anti-depressive, anti-anxiety, and anti-inflammatory properties. Current clinical studies have demonstrated that Baihe Dihuang Decoction, a traditional Chinese herbal compound, is effective in treating depression. However, the majority of scholars have predominantly examined Rehmannia glutinosa and Lilium in isolation, and a comprehensive elucidation of their principal active metabolites and pharmacological mechanisms remains lacking. Methods A comprehensive literature search was conducted as of 29 September 2024, utilizing databases such as PubMed, CNKI, Wanfang Data, Baidu Scholar, and Google Scholar. Additionally, classical texts on Chinese herbal medicine, the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, as well as doctoral and master's theses, were included in the collected materials. The search employed specific terms including "R. glutinosa," "Lilium," "Baihe Dihuang decoction," "application of Baihe Dihuang decoction," "pathogenesis of depression," and "pharmacological action and mechanism of depression. Results This paper reviewed the traditional applications and dosages of the R. glutinosa-Lilium as documented in Chinese medical classics, thereby establishing a foundation for the contemporary development and clinical application of the classical formula Baihe Dihuang Decoction. Additionally, recent years have seen a comprehensive review of the pharmacological effects and mechanisms of R. glutinosa-Lilium and its principal metabolites in the context of depression. Conclusion This paper has reviewed the active metabolites of R. glutinosa-Lilium and demonstrated its efficacy in the treatment of depression, as well as its role in modulating the underlying mechanisms of the disorder. The findings aim to serve as a reference for further research into the mechanisms of depression, its clinical applications, and the development of novel therapeutic agents.

Abstract
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is a significant player in the pathophysiology of various neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders. Despite the established link between ER stress and inflammatory pathways, there remains a need for deeper exploration of the specific cellular mechanisms underlying ER stress-mediated neuroinflammation. This study aimed to investigate how the severity of ER stress (triggered by different concentrations of tunicamycin) can impact the release of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8 from astrocytes and microglia, comparing the effects with those induced by well-known immunostimulants-tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Mild ER stress has a distinct effect on the cytokine release compared to more intense stress levels, i.e., diminished IL-6 production was accompanied by an increase in IL-8 level, which was significantly more pronounced in astrocytes than in microglia. On the contrary, prolonged or more severe ER stress induced inflammation in glial cells, leading to a time- and concentration-dependent buildup of proinflammatory IL-6, but unlike inflammatory agents, an ER stress inducer diminished IL-8 secretions by glial cells. The differences could hold importance in identifying ER stress markers as potential drug targets for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases or mood disorders, yet this requires confirmation in more complex animal studies.

Abstract
Sex hormones have biological effects on inflammation, and these might contribute to the sex-specific features of depression. C-reactive protein (CRP) is the most widely used inflammatory biomarker and consistent evidence shows a significant proportion (20-30 %) of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) have CRP levels above 3 mg/L, a threshold indicating at least low-grade inflammation. Here, we investigate the interplay between sex hormones and CRP in the cross-sectional, observational Biomarkers in Depression Study. We measured serum high-sensitivity (hs-)CRP, in 64 healthy controls and 178 MDD patients, subdivided into those with hs-CRP below 3 mg/L (low-CRP; 53 males, 72 females) and with hs-CRP above 3 mg/L (high-CRP; 19 males, 34 females). We also measured interleukin-6, testosterone, 17-β-estradiol (E2), progesterone, sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG), follicle-stimulating and luteinising hormones, and calculated testosterone-to-E2 ratio (T/E2), free androgen and estradiol indexes (FAI, FEI), and testosterone secretion index. In males, high-CRP patients had lower testosterone than controls (p = 0.001), and lower testosterone (p = 0.013), T/E2 (p < 0.001), and higher FEI (p = 0.015) than low-CRP patients. In females, high-CRP patients showed lower SHGB levels than controls (p = 0.033) and low-CRP patients (p = 0.034). The differences in testosterone, T/E2 ratio, and FEI levels in males survived the Benjamini-Hochberg FDR correction. In linear regression analyses, testosterone (β = -1.069 p = 0.033) predicted CRP concentrations (R2 = 0.252 p = 0.002) in male patients, and SHBG predicted CRP levels (β = -0.628 p = 0.009, R2 = 0.172 p = 0.003) in female patients. These findings may guide future research investigating interactions between gonadal and immune systems in depression, and the potential of hormonal therapies in MDD with inflammation.

Abstract
In this study, we have developed a novel method based on deep learning and brain effective connectivity to classify responders and non-responders to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) antidepressants in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients prior to the treatment using EEG signal. The effective connectivity of 30 MDD patients was determined by analyzing their pretreatment EEG signals, which were then concatenated into delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands and transformed into images. Using these images, we then fine tuned a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network that is enhanced with bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory cells based on transfer learning. The Inception-v3, ResNet18, DenseNet121, and EfficientNet-B0 models are implemented as base models. Finally, the models are followed by BiLSTM and dense layers in order to classify responders and non-responders to SSRI treatment. Results showed that the EfficiencyNet-B0 has the highest accuracy of 98.33, followed by DensNet121, ResNet18 and Inception-v3. Therefore, a new method was proposed in this study that uses deep learning models to extract both spatial and temporal features automatically, which will improve classification results. The proposed method provides accurate identification of MDD patients who are responding, thereby reducing the cost of medical facilities and patient care.

Abstract
Emotions, in general, have no scientific definition. Emotions can be denoted as the mental state because of the neurophysiological changes. Emotions are related to mood, personality, temperament, and consciousness. People exhibit different emotions in different situations causing changes in cognitive functions. One of the major cognitive functions is the ability to learn, to store the acquired information in the parts of the brain such as the hippocampus, amygdala, cortex, and cerebellum. Learning and memory are affected by different types of emotions. Emotional responses such as fear, depression, and stress have impaired effects on cognitive functions such as learning and memory, whereas optimistic and happy emotions have positive effects on long-term memory. Certain disorders have greater effects on the regions of the brain which are also associated with synaptic plasticity and Learning and Memory(LM). Neuroimaging techniques are involved in studying the changing regions of the brain due to varied emotions and treatment strategies based on the changes observed. There are many drugs, and in advancements, nanotechnology is also utilized in the treatment of such psychiatric disorders. To improve mental health and physical health, emotional balance is most important, and effective care should be provided for people with less emotional quotient and different types of disorders to inhibit cognitive dysfunctions. In this review, emotions and their varied effects on a cognitive function named learning and memory, disorders associated with the defects of learning due to emotional instability, the areas of the brain that are in control of emotions, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for psychiatric disorders dependent on emotions are discussed.

Abstract
Response to antidepressants is related to hippocampal neurogenesis integrity, a process mediated by neurotrophins, such as Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). In turn, pro-inflammatory state appears to reduce neurogenesis, and has been associated with refractory depressive states. We propose to analyze the human neural progenitor cells derived from the olfactory epithelium (HNPCs-OE) as an indicator of neurogenesis in humans. Therefore, we compared the number and content of HNPCs-OE in depressed patients taking antidepressants, according to response to treatment. Twenty depressed patients were followed during eight weeks after antidepressant treatment was prescribed. At the end evaluation they were divided in two groups according to Hamilton depression rating scale (HDRS) scores: responders and non-responders. We compared the number and components of HNPCs-OE between groups and observed an elevation of interleukine-8 in those patients who do not achieve response to treatment, BDNF levels were no related to antidepressant response.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal elevated glucocorticoid levels during pregnancy can affect the developing fetus, permanently altering the structure and function of its brain throughout life. Excessive action of these hormones is known to contribute to psychiatric disorders, including depression. MATERIALS The study was performed in a rat model of depression based on prenatal administration of dexamethasone (DEX) in late pregnancy (0.1 mg/kg, days 14-21). We evaluated the effects of prenatal DEX treatment on the cognition and bioenergetic signaling pathways in the brain of adult male rats, in the frontal cortex and hippocampus, and in response to stress in adulthood, using behavioral and biochemical test batteries. RESULTS We revealed cognitive deficits in rats prenatally treated with DEX. At the molecular level, a decrease in the orexin A and orexin B levels and downregulation of the AMPK-SIRT1-PGC1α transduction pathway in the frontal cortex of these animals were observed. In the hippocampus, a decreased expression of orexin B was found and changes in the MR/GR ratio were demonstrated. Furthermore, an increase in HDAC5 level triggered by the prenatal DEX treatment in both brain structures and a decrease in MeCP2 level in the hippocampus were reported. CONCLUSIONS Our study demonstrated that prenatal DEX treatment is associated with cognitive dysfunction and alterations in various proteins leading to metabolic changes in the frontal cortex, while in the hippocampus adaptation mechanisms were activated. The presented results imply that different pathophysiological metabolic processes may be involved in depression development, which may be useful in the search for novel therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by sadness and anhedonia, but also physical symptoms such as changes in appetite and weight. Gut microbiota has been hypothesized to be involved in MDD through gut-brain axis signaling. Moreover, antidepressants display antibacterial properties in the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of this study was to compare the gut microbiota and systemic inflammatory profile of young patients with MDD before and after initiation of antidepressant treatment and/or psychotherapy in comparison with a non-depressed control group (nonMDD). METHODS Fecal and blood samples were collected at baseline and at follow-up after four and twelve weeks, respectively. Patients started treatment immediately after collection of the baseline samples. The gut microbiota was characterized by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing targeting the hypervariable V4 region. Plasma levels of 49 unique immune markers were assessed using Mesoscale. RESULTS In total, 27 MDD patients and 32 nonMDD controls were included in the study. The gut microbiota in the baseline samples of MDD versus nonMDD participants did not differ regarding α- or β-diversity. However, there was a higher relative abundance of the genera Ruminococcus gnavus group, and a lower relative abundance of the genera Desulfovibrio, Tyzzerella, Megamonas, Olsenella, Gordonibacter, Allisonella and Rothia in the MDD group compared to the nonMDD group. In the MDD group, there was an increase in the genera Rothia, Desulfovibrio, Gordinobacteer and Lactobacillus, while genera belonging to the Firmicutes phylum were found depleted at twelve weeks follow-up compared to baseline. In the MDD group, IL-7, IL-8 and IL-17b levels were elevated compared to the nonMDD group at baseline. Furthermore, MDI score in the MDD group was found to correlate with Bray-Curtis dissimilarity at baseline, and several inflammatory markers at both baseline and after initiation of antidepressant treatment. CONCLUSION Several bacterial taxa differed between the MDD group and the nonMDD group at baseline and changed in relative abundance during antidepressant treatment and/or psychotherapy. The MDD group was furthermore found to have a pro-inflammatory profile compared to the nonMDD group at baseline. Further studies are required to investigate the gut microbiota and pro-inflammatory profile of patients with MDD.

Abstract
Depression, as a common mental illness that is often accompanied by suicidal and homicidal behaviors, is one of the most important diseases in the medical field that requires urgent attention. The pathogenesis of depression is complex, and the current therapeutic drugs such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and secondary serotonin reuptake inhibitors have certain shortcomings. The inflammatory factor hypothesis, one of the pathogenesis of depression, suggests that inflammatory response is a key factor leading to the occurrence and development of depression, and that overactivation of inflammatory factors such as NLRP3, Toll-like receptor 4, and IDO leads to immune-system dysfunction and depression. The other pathogenic hypothesis, the gut flora hypothesis, has also been the focus of recent research. The gut flora may work together with inflammatory factors to cause depression. The approach to treating depression has been by altering the gut flora through drugs or probiotics. However, effective and clear treatment methods are lacking. In this study, by exploring the involvement of intestinal flora and inflammatory factors in the pathogenesis of depression, we found that improving the intestinal flora can affect inflammatory factors and, therefore, provide research ideas for the development of novel drugs to treat depression.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In patients with a pre-existing mental disorder, an increased risk for a first manifestation of a psychiatric disorder in COVID-19 patients, a more severe course of COVID-19 and an increased mortality have been described. Conversely, observations of lower COVID-19 incidences in psychiatric in-patients suggested protective effects of psychiatric treatment and/or psychotropic drugs against COVID-19. METHODS A retrospective multi-center study was conducted in 24 German psychiatric university hospitals. Between April and December 2020 (the first and partly second wave of COVID-19), the effects of COVID-19 were assessed on psychiatric in-patient care, the incidence and course of a SARS-CoV-2 infection, and treatment with psychotropic drugs. RESULTS Patients (n=36,322) were admitted to the hospitals. Mandatory SARS-CoV-2 tests before/during admission were reported by 23 hospitals (95.8%), while 18 (75%) conducted regular testing during the hospital stay. Two hundred thirty-two (0.6%) patients were tested SARS-CoV-2-positive. Thirty-seven (16%) patients were receiving medical treatment for COVID-19 at the psychiatric hospital, ten (4.3%) were transferred to an intermediate/intensive care unit, and three (1.3%) died. The most common prescription for SARS-CoV-2-positive patients was for second-generation antipsychotics (n=79, 28.2%) and antidepressants (SSRIs (n=38, 13.5%), mirtazapine (n=36, 12.9%) and SNRIs (n=29, 10.4%)). DISCUSSION Contrary to previous studies, our results showed a low number of infections and mortality in SARS-CoV-2-positive psychiatric patients. Several preventive measures seem effective to protect this vulnerable group. Our observations are compatible with the hypothesis of a protective effect of psychotropic drugs against COVID-19 as the overall mortality and need for specific medical treatment was low.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly prevalent psychiatric condition affecting an estimated 280 million individuals globally. Despite the occurrence of suicidal behaviors across various psychiatric conditions, MDD is distinctly associated with the highest risk of suicide attempts and death within this population. In this study, we focused on MDD to identify potential inflammatory biomarkers associated with suicidal risk, given the relationship between depressive states and suicidal ideation. Articles published before June 2023 were searched in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library to identify all relevant studies reporting blood inflammatory biomarkers in patients with MDD with suicide-related behaviors. Of 571 articles, 24 were included in this study. Overall, 43 significant biomarkers associated with MDD and suicide-related behaviors were identified. Our study provided compelling evidence of significant alterations in peripheral inflammatory factors in MDD patients with suicide-related behaviors, demonstrating the potential roles of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, C-reactive protein, C-C motif chemokine ligand 2, and tumor necrosis factor-α as biomarkers. These findings underscore the intricate relationship between the inflammatory processes of these biomarkers and their interactions in MDD with suicidal risk.

Abstract
Background C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant that is implicated in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder (MDD), due to its role in the execution of various important neurological events, including neurogenesis, mediation of neural plasticity, and synaptic transmission. Aims This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the level of CRP to remission rates after antidepressant therapy. Methods Fifty patients of first episode MDD with no past history of antidepressant exposure and other medical comorbidity were recruited after obtaining consent for Escitalopram therapy. The CRP levels of the patients were evaluated on the day of recruitment and depressive symptoms were monitored using Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale at weeks 0, 3, 6, and 12. The patients with low (≤10 mg/l) and high (>10 mg/l) CRP levels were compared for time taken to achieve remission using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. Results The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed a significantly higher proportion of patients with low CRP levels attained remission than patients with higher CRP levels (Log-rank = 7.594; dF = 1; P = 0.006). The age, compliance to pharmacotherapy, and disability did not significantly affect the remission rates of the patients. Conclusion Our study confirms that higher levels of CRP can lead to poorer remission rates in patients with MDD after antidepressant therapy and can predict treatment resistance.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a multifactorial, serious and heterogeneous mental disorder that can lead to chronic recurrent symptoms, treatment resistance and suicidal behavior. MDD often involves immune dysregulation with high peripheral levels of inflammatory cytokines that might have an influence on the clinical course and treatment response. Moreover, patients with MDD show brain volume changes as well as white matter (WM) alterations that are already existing in the early stage of illness. Mounting evidence suggests that both neuroimaging markers, such as WM integrity and blood markers, such as inflammatory cytokines might serve as predictors of treatment response in MDD. However, the relationship between peripheral inflammation, WM structure and antidepressant response is not yet clearly understood. The aim of the present review is to elucidate the association between inflammation and WM integrity and its impact on the pathophysiology and progression of MDD as well as the role of possible novel biomarkers of treatment response to improve MDD prevention and treatment strategies.

Abstract
Mood disorders are associated with elevated inflammation, and the reduction of symptoms after multiple treatments is often accompanied by pro-inflammation restoration. A variety of neuromodulation techniques that regulate regional brain activities have been used to treat refractory mood disorders. However, their efficacy varies from person to person and lack reliable indicator. This review summarizes clinical and animal studies on inflammation in neural circuits related to anxiety and depression and the evidence that neuromodulation therapies regulate neuroinflammation in the treatment of neurological diseases. Neuromodulation therapies, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), photobiomodulation (PBM), transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), all have been reported to attenuate neuroinflammation and reduce the release of pro-inflammatory factors, which may be one of the reasons for mood improvement. This review provides a better understanding of the effective mechanism of neuromodulation therapies and indicates that inflammatory biomarkers may serve as a reference for the assessment of pathological conditions and treatment options in anxiety and depression.

Abstract
An increasing number of studies have investigated the role of inflammation in psychiatric disorders, by demonstrating how an altered/dysfunctional immunological and inflammatory system may underpin a psychiatric condition. Particularly, several studies specifically investigated the role of a neuroinflammatory biomarker, named C-reactive protein (CRP), in psychiatric disorders. Overall, even though scientific literature so far published still does not appear definitive, CRP is more likely reported to be elevated in several psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. Moreover, a low-grade inflammation (CRP >3 mg/L) has been more likely observed in a subgroup of patients affected with a more severe psychopathological symptomatology, more treatment resistance and worst clinical mental illness course, strengthening the hypothesis of the need for a different clinical and prognostic characterization based on this concomitant neuroinflammatory predisposition. However, even though further research studies are needed to confirm this preliminary evidence, CRP may represent a potential clinical routine biomarker which could be integrated in the clinical routine practice to better characterize clinical picture and course as well as address clinicians towards a personalized treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dysregulated complement system is linked to pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). Childhood trauma has been associated with an increased incidence of adult depression via a putative mechanism of immune activation. This study aimed to measure and compare peripheral levels of complement C3, C3a, C1q and C-reactive protein (CRP) in MDD patients and healthy controls and explore the relationship between these molecule levels and childhood trauma history in the participants. METHODS The participants were 49 medication-free MDD patients and 45 healthy controls. All participants were asked to finish the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, followed by blood sampling for measurement of plasma complement C3, C3a, C1q and CRP by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS Peripheral plasma concentration of C3 and C3a in medication-free MDD group was significantly higher than that in the healthy controls; whereas the concentration of plasma C1q and CRP in depressed patients was comparable to that in healthy controls. All these inflammatory factors were not associated to childhood trauma experience in patients with MDD. CONCLUSION Our data suggest that complement C3 and C3a may be implicated in the pathophysiology of MDD, although traumatic childhood experiences were not associated with the circulating levels of complement C3, C3a, C1q and CRP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Immune dysregulation plays a key role in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, little is known about the complicated involvement of various interleukins in MDD. This study was performed to investigate the correlation between plasma interleukin-8 (IL-8) levels and treatment outcome of paroxetine (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) in patients with MDD. METHODS A total of 115 hospitalized patients (36 males and 79 females), aged from 18 to 72 years, were enrolled. Plasma levels of IL-8 were measured before treatment initiation (baseline) and at 8 weeks after oral paroxetine treatment. Efficacy of paroxetine was evaluated by use of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17). Baseline IL-8 levels were compared between responders and non-responders to paroxetine treatment. RESULTS Plasma IL-8 levels decreased significantly after an 8-week antidepressant treatment in responders, in association with a dramatic decrease in HAMD-17 scores. In non-responders, plasma IL-8 levels did not change significantly at 8 weeks after antidepressant treatment. Baseline plasma IL-8 levels were found to be significantly lower in responders than in non-responders, showing a correlation between IL-8 and antidepressant response to paroxetine. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that plasma IL-8 levels were related to treatment outcome of paroxetine, and therefore suggest that IL-8 could be a promising predicator of treatment response in individual patients with MDD.

Abstract
Neuroinflammation and anhedonia in major depressive disorder (MDD) are closely connected, though the exact mechanism is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between cytokines, C-reactive protein (CRP), cortisol, and anhedonia, revealing the potential predictive value in identifying anhedonic MDD. In total, 66 patients with MDD (29 with anhedonia and 37 without anhedonia) and 66 healthy controls (HCs) were included. The severity of depression and anhedonia was evaluated using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression-24 (HAMD-24) and Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), respectively. Serum cytokines were measured using flow cytofluorometric kits, while CRP and cortisol were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. We found higher serum levels of interleukin-2 (IL-2), IL-6, and cortisol in MDD than in HC where anhedonic MDD was highest. CRP and IL-6 were positively associated with anhedonia, and cortisol levels were related to both anhedonia and depression. A combination of IL-6, CRP, and cortisol had optimal predictive value for distinguishing anhedonic MDD. Anhedonic MDD has unique neuroendocrine-immune characteristics compared with those without anhedonia. The combination of IL-6, CRP, and cortisol might be an early marker to distinguish anhedonic MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation plays a role in the pathomechanism of depressive disorder. Cytokines interact with iodothyronine deiodinases (DIOs) that are involved in thyroid hormone (TH) metabolism. DIOs are known as modifiers of the inflammatory response. RANTES is a chemokine that has been detected in a wide range of inflammatory disorders, but is less studied in depression. We aimed to investigate the concentration of RANTES in patients with recurrent depressive disorder (rDD) and examine any potential correlation with other molecules, such as interleukins (ILs) and DIOs. METHODS The levels of RANTES and other molecules associated with depressive disorder, including deiodinase type 1 (DIO1), interleukin (IL)1β, and IL-6, were measured by enzymatic immune assay (ELISA) in the serum of 43 patients with depressive disorder and 36 controls. RESULTS RANTES levels were higher in depressed patients than in controls. The level of RANTES was negatively correlated with the deiodinase type 1 (DIO1) level in women diagnosed with rDD. IL-1β and IL-6 levels were significantly higher in depressed patients than in controls. IL-1β was positively correlated with deiodinase type 3 (DIO3). A negative correlation between DIO1 and the number of depressive episodes in women with rDD was observed. CONCLUSION With the observed elevated RANTES levels, increases in ILs concentrations, and a possible link between immune aspects and DIOa in patients with rDD, our study contributes to the current pool of knowledge about the complex aetiology of depression and suggests future studies focus on precision mechanisms that explain the link between TH-related molecules and immune molecules.

Abstract
The Korean Medication Algorithm Project for Depressive Disorder (KMAP-DD) first was published in 2002, and has been revised four times, in 2006, 2012, 2017, and 2021. In this review, we compared recommendations from the recently revised KMAP-DD 2021 to four global clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for depression published after 2010. The recommendations from the KMAP-DD 2021 were similar to those from other CPGs, although there were some differences. The KMAP-DD 2021 reflected social culture and the healthcare system in Korea and recent evidence about pharmacotherapy for depression, as did other recently published evidence-based guidelines. Despite some intrinsic limitations as an expert consensus-based guideline, the KMAP-DD 2021 can be helpful for Korean psychiatrists making decisions in clinical settings by complementing previously published evidence-based guidelines, especially for some clinical situations lacking evidence from rigorously designed clinical trials.

Abstract
The etiopathogenesis of depression is not entirely understood. Several studies have investigated the role of inflammation in major depressive disorder. The present work aims to review the literature on the association between C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and depression. A systematic review was performed for the topics of ‘CRP’ and ‘depression’ using the PubMed database from inception to December 2021. Fifty-six studies were identified and included in the review. Evidence suggested the presence of dysregulation in the inflammation system in individuals with depression. In most studies, higher blood CRP levels were associated with greater symptom severity, a specific pattern of depressive symptoms, and a worse response to treatment. Moreover, about one-third of depressed patients showed a low-grade inflammatory state, suggesting the presence of a different major depressive disorder (MDD) subgroup with a distinct etiopathogenesis, clinical course, treatment response, and prognosis, which could benefit from monitoring of CRP levels and might potentially respond to anti-inflammatory treatments. This work provides robust evidence about the potential role of CRP and its blood levels in depressive disorders. These findings can be relevant to developing new therapeutic strategies and better understanding if CRP may be considered a valuable biomarker for depression.

Abstract
AbstractSince the beginning of the coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic, the need for
effective treatments for COVID-19 led to the idea of
“repurposing” drugs for antiviral treatment. Several
antipsychotics and antidepressants have been tested for in vitro activity
against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Chlorpromazine,
other phenothiazine antipsychotics, and the antidepressant fluoxetine were found
to be rather potent in these studies. However, whether effective plasma
concentrations can be obtained with clinically accepted doses of these drugs is
not clear. Data of COVID-19 patients are not yet available but several clinical
studies are currently underway.The specific serotonin reuptake inhibitor fluvoxamine is a potent Sigma-1
receptor agonist and reduces inflammation in animal models of cytokine-stress.
Accordingly, fluvoxamine treatment was superior to placebo in reducing impaired
respiratory function and other symptoms of inflammation in COVID-19 patients in
a placebo-controlled clinical study and another open clinical trial. The
beneficial effects of fluvoxamine on the course of COVID-19 were recently
confirmed in a large placebo-controlled double-blind trial with several hundred
patients.Inflammation represents a major risk factor for many psychiatric disorders which
explains the high susceptibilitiy of COVID-19 patients for psychiatric diseases.
Many antidepressants and antipsychotics possess anti-inflammatory properties
independent of sigma-1 activity which might be important to reduce psychiatric
symptoms of COVID-19 patients and to improve respiratory dysfunction and other
consequences of inflammation. This might explain the rather unspecific benefit
which has been reported for several cohorts of COVID-19 patients treated with
different psychotropic drugs.

Abstract
The antidepressant mechanism of acupuncture has not been fully elucidated recently. Thus, the objective of the present study is to investigate the antidepressant mechanism of acupuncture of modulating the neuroinflammation induced by high mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) in rats subjected to chronic restraint stress (CRS). Forty-four male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into control, model, escitalopram, and acupuncture group. Except for rats in the control group, all rats were exposed to CRS for 21 days continuously. Rats in the escitalopram group were subjected to a suspension of escitalopram and saline. One hour before CRS procedures, acupuncture was performed at Baihui (GV20) and Yintang (GV29) for rats in the acupuncture group, 20 min per day for 21 days. All rats in each group were conducted to detect the body weight, sucrose preference test at 0, 7, 14, 21 days to evaluate the depression-like behaviors. The expression of microglial activation and HMGB1 in the hippocampus was detected by immunofluorescence. The expression of hippocampal interleukin-10 (IL-10) was detected by western blot. And the content of serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was detected by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. CRS-exposed rats showed obviously decreased body weight and sucrose preference when compared with the control group, which was reversed by acupuncture. The results have also shown that acupuncture ameliorated the CRS-induced activation of microglia and HMGB1 in the hippocampus CA1 region. Furthermore, acupuncture reduced the stress-induced upregulation of TNF-α in serum. Collectively, the current study highlights the role of acupuncture in alleviating depressive behavior associated with stress-induced neuroinflammation mediated by HMGB1 in the CRS model of depression.

Abstract
The gut microbiome is known to be involved in depression development. Thus, phytochemicals changing gut microbiota may alleviate depression-like behaviors. Coniferyl ferulate (CF) is a long studied natural product and known to alleviate psychiatric disorders. However, its mechanism of action remains unclear. In this experimental study, oral administration of 50 mg kg-1 CF once daily attenuated weight loss and depression-like and anxiety-like behaviors induced by chronic unpredicted mild stress (CUMS) in mice. Four weeks of CF administration significantly ameliorated colonic inflammation, lowered the levels of IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α, and restructured the gut microbiome, and microbial metabolism. Intestinal microbiota can impact the development and function of the brain via the microbiota-gut-brain axis. Therefore, oral administration of CF is a promising nutritional strategy to treat CUMS-induced depression via the regulation of microbiota and microbial metabolism.

Abstract
Background: Cang-ai volatile oil (CAVO) is a Chinese herbal volatile oil. Previous studies report that CAVO exhibits of anti-depressant and anti-inflammatory effects, and modulates activity of monoamine neurotransmitter. The current study sought to explore whether CAVO exhibits anti-depressant effects of CAVO through inhibition of inflammatory response and regulation of indoleamine 2 and 3-dioxygenase (IDO) mediated tryptophan degradation pathway. Methods: The study established chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) depression-like model using rats. Body weight and food intake of animals were determined, and open field test (OFT), forced swim test (FST), and sucrose preference test (SPT) were performed to explored the behavioral changes of animals. Expression levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-10 (IL-10), kynurenine (KYN), quinolinic acid (QUIN), tryptophan (Trp), kynurenic acid (KYNA), serotonin (5-HT), and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) in the prefrontal cortex of CUMS rats were determined by ELISA. Co-localization of the microglia markers, Iba1 and IL-6 was determined by immunofluorescence. Western blotting was performed to determine the protein expression level of IDO1. Results: The findings of the current study showed that CAVO increased the body weight and food intake of rats and alleviated depression-like behaviors as shown in OFT, FST, and SPT analysis. ELISA assay showed that CAVO decreased IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α, and IFN-γ levels and increased levels of IL-4 and IL-10 in the prefrontal cortex of CUMS rats. Analysis showed that CAVO significantly reduced KYN and QUIN levels and the ratio of KYN/Trp, whereas it increased the levels of Trp, KYNA, 5-HT, and 5-HIAA. Immunofluorescence analysis showed that CAVO reduced the number of positive cells with co-localization of microglia markers, Iba1 and IL-6. Western blot analysis showed that CAVO decreased the protein expression level of IDO1 in rats. Conclusion: The findings show that the anti-depressant effects of CAVO are mainly attributed to inhibition of the activation of microglia and downregulation of IDO expression, thus inhibiting the kynurenine pathway and reversing the effects exerted on the 5-HT system.
