Abstract
OBJECTIVE Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a biomaterial with appropriate bone-like mechanical properties and excellent biocompatibility, is widely applied in cranio-maxillofacial and dental applications. However, the lack of antibacterial effect is an essential drawback of PEEK material and might lead to infection and osseointegration issues. This study aims to apply a natural antibacterial agent, totarol coating onto the 3D printed PEEK surface and find an optimized concentration with balanced cytocompatibility, osteogenesis, and antibacterial capability. METHODS In this study, a natural antibacterial agent, totarol, was applied as a coating to fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printed PEEK surfaces at a series of increasing concentrations (1 mg/ml, 5 mg/ml, 10 mg/ml, 15 mg/ml, and 20 mg/ml). The samples were then evaluated for cytocompatibility with L929 fibroblast and SAOS-2 osteoblast using live/dead staining and CCK-8 assay. The antibacterial capability was assessed by crystal violet staining, live/dead staining, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) utilizing the oral primary colonizer S. gordonii and isolates of mixed oral bacteria in a stirring system simulating the oral environment. The appropriate safe working concentration for totarol coating is selected based on the results of the cytocompatibility and antibacterial test. Subsequently, the influence on osteogenic differentiation was evaluated by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and alizarin red staining (ARS) analysis of pre-osteoblasts. RESULTS Our results showed that the optimal concentration of totarol solution for promising antibacterial coating was approximately 10 mg/ml. Such surfaces could play an excellent antibacterial role by inducing a contact-killing effect with an inhibitory effect against biofilm development without affecting the healing of soft and hard tissues around FFF 3D printed PEEK implants or abutments. SIGNIFICANCE This study indicates that the totarol coated PEEK has an improved antibacterial effect with excellent biocompatibility providing great clinical potential as an orthopedic/dental implant/abutment material.

Abstract
Using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to make the porous tantalum plate and modify its surface. The physicochemical properties, cytocompatibility, antioxidant capacity, and histocompatibility of the modified materials were evaluated to prepare for the repair of craniomaxillofacial bone defects. The porous tantalum plates were 3D printed by selective laser melting technology. Tantalum plates were surface modified with a metal polyphenol network. The surface-modified plates were analyzed for cytocompatibility using thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide and live/dead cell staining. The antioxidant capacity of the surface-modified plates was assessed by measuring the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species, reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and malondialdehyde. The histocompatibility of the plates was evaluated by animal experiments. The results obtained that the tantalum plates with uniform small pores exhibited a high mechanical strength. The surface-modified plates had much better hydrophilicity. In vitro cell experiments showed that the surface-modified plates had higher cytocompatibility and antioxidant capacity than blank tantalum plates. Through subcutaneous implantation in rabbits, the surface-modified plates demonstrated good histocompatibility. Hence, surface-modified tantalum plates had the potential to be used as an implant material for the treatment of craniomaxillofacial bone defects.

Abstract
The biocompatible polymer polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a suitable candidate to be part of potential all-polymer total joint replacements, provided its use is associated with better osseointegration, mechanical performance, and wear resistance. Seeking to meet the aforementioned requirements, respectively, we have manufactured a PEEK composite with different fillers: carbon fibers (CF), hydroxyapatite particles (HA) and graphene platelets (GNP). The mechanical outcomes of the composites with combinations of 0, 1.5, 3.0 wt% GNP, 5 and 15 wt% HA and 30% of wt% CF concentrations pointed out that one of the best filler combinations to achieve the previous objectives was 30 wt% CF, 8 wt% HA and 2 wt% of GNP. The study compares the bioactivity of human osteoblasts on this composite prepared by injection molding with that on the material manufactured by the Fused Filament Fabrication 3D additive technique. The results indicate that the surface adhesion and proliferation of human osteoblasts over time are better with the composite obtained by injection molding than that obtained by 3D printing. This result is more closely correlated with morphological parameters of the composite surface than its wettability behavior.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) printing, medical imaging, and implant design have all advanced significantly in recent years, and these developments may change how modern craniomaxillofacial surgeons use patient data to create tailored treatments. Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is often seen as an attractive option over metal biomaterials in medical uses, but a solid PEEK implant often leads to poor osseointegration and clinical failure. Therefore, the objective of this study is to demonstrate the quantitative assessment of a custom porous PEEK implant for cranial reconstruction and to evaluate its fitting accuracy. The research proposes an efficient process for designing, fabricating, simulating, and inspecting a customized porous PEEK implant. In this study, a CT scan is utilized in conjunction with a mirrored reconstruction technique to produce a skull implant. In order to foster cell proliferation, the implant is modified into a porous structure. The implant's strength and stability are examined using finite element analysis. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is utilized to fabricate the porous PEEK implants, and 3D scanning is used to test its fitting accuracy. The results of the biomechanical analysis indicate that the highest stress observed was approximately 61.92 MPa, which is comparatively low when compared with the yield strength and tensile strength of the material. The implant fitting analysis demonstrates that the implant's variance from the normal skull is less than 0.4436 mm, which is rather low given the delicate anatomy of the area. The results of the study demonstrate the implant's endurance while also increasing the patient's cosmetic value.

Abstract
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a high performing thermoplastic that has established itself as a 'gold-standard' material for cranial reconstruction. Traditionally, milled PEEK patient specific cranial implants (PSCIs) exhibit uniform levels of smoothness (excusing suture/drainage holes) to the touch (<1 μm) and homogenous coloration throughout. They also demonstrate predictable and repeatable levels of mechanical performance, as they are machined from isotropic material blocks. The combination of such factors inspires confidence from the surgeon and in turn, approval for implantation. However, manufacturing lead-times and affiliated costs to fabricate a PSCI are high. To simplify their production and reduce expenditure, hospitals are exploring the production of in-house PEEK PSCIs by material extrusion-based additive manufacturing. From a geometrical and morphological perspective, such implants have been produced with good-to-satisfactory clinical results. However, lack of clinical adoption persists. To determine the reasoning behind this, it was necessary to assess the benefits and limitations of current printed PEEK PSCIs in order to establish the status quo. Afterwards, a review on individual PEEK printing variables was performed in order to identify a combination of parameters that could enhance the aesthetics and performance of the PSCIs to that of milled implants/cranial bone. The findings from this review could be used as a baseline to help standardize the production of PEEK PSCIs by material extrusion in the hospital.

Abstract
Background/purpose Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has the potential to transform the industry. While there have been advancements in using AM for dental restorations, there is still a need for further research to develop functional biomedical and dental materials. It's crucial to understand the current status of AM technology and research trends to advance dental research in this field. The aim of this study is to reveal the current status of international scientific publications in the field of dental research related to AM technologies. Materials and methods In this study, a systematic scoping review was conducted using appropriate keywords within the scope of international scientific publishing databases (PubMed and Web of Science). The review included related clinical and laboratory research, including both human and animal studies, case reports, review articles, and questionnaire studies. A total of 187 research studies were evaluated for quantitative synthesis in this review. Results The findings highlighted a rising trend in research numbers over the years (From 2012 to 2022). The most publications were produced in 2020 and 2021, with annual percentage increases of 25.7% and 26.2%, respectively. The majority of AM-related publications in dentistry research originate from Korea. The pioneer dental sub-fields with the ost publications in its category are prosthodontics and implantology, respectively. Conclusion The final review result clearly stated an expectation for the future that the research in dentistry would concentrate on AM technologies in order to increase the new product and process development in dental materials, tools, implants and new generation modelling strategy related to AM. The results of this work can be used as indicators of trends related to AM research in dentistry and/or as prospects for future publication expectations in this field.

Abstract
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has become the biomaterial of choice for repairing craniofacial defects over time. Prospects for the point-of-care (POC) fabrication of PEEK customized implants have surfaced thanks to the developments in three-dimensional (3D) printing systems. Consequently, it has become essential to investigate the characteristics of these in-house fabricated implants so that they meet the necessary standards and eventually provide the intended clinical benefits. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the steam sterilization method on the dimensional accuracy of POC 3D-printed PEEK customized cranial implants. The objective was to assess the influence of standard sterilization procedures on material extrusion-based 3D-printed PEEK customized implants with non-destructive material testing. Fifteen PEEK customized cranial implants were fabricated using an in-house material extrusion-based 3D printer. After fabrication, the cranial implants were digitalized with a professional-grade optical scanner before and after sterilization. The dimensional changes for the 3D-printed PEEK cranial implants were analyzed using medically certified 3D image-based engineering software. The material extrusion 3D-printed PEEK customized cranial implants displayed no statistically significant dimensional difference with steam sterilization (p > 0.05). Evaluation of the cranial implants’ accuracy revealed that the dimensions were within the clinically acceptable accuracy level with deviations under 1.00 mm. Steam sterilization does not significantly alter the dimensional accuracy of the in-house 3D-printed PEEK customized cranial implants.

Abstract
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been widely used in the preparation of orthopedic implants due to its biological inertness and similar mechanical modulus to natural bone. However, the affinity between biological tissue (bone and soft tissue) and PEEK surface is weak, leading to low osseointegration and an increased risk of inflammation. The situation could be improved by modifying PEEK surface. Surfaces with good hydrophilicity and proper microtopography would promote cellular adhesion and proliferation. This work presented a two-step surface modification method to achieve the effect. Polyacrylic acid (PAA) chains were grafted on PEEK surface by UV irradiation. Then, ethylenediamine (EDA) was added to introduce amino groups and promote the cross-linking of PAA chains. Furthermore, a mathematical model was built to describe and regulate the surface topography growth process semi-quantitatively. The model fits experimental data quite well (adjusted R2 = 0.779). Results showed that the modified PEEK surface obtained superhydrophilicity. It significantly improved the adhesion and proliferation of BMSCs and MFBs by activating the FAK pathway and Rho family GTPase. The cellular affinity performed better when the surface topography was in network structure with holes in about 25 μm depth and 20-50 μm diameter. Good hydrophilicity seems necessary for the FAK pathway activation, but simply improving surface hydrophilicity might not be enough for cellular affinity improvement. Surface topography at micron scale should be a more important cue. This simple surface modification method could be contributed to further study of cell-microtopography interaction and have potential applications in clinical PEEK orthopedic implants.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies can enable the direct fabrication of customized physical objects with complex shapes, based on computer-aided design models. This technology is changing the digital manufacturing industry and has become a subject of considerable interest in digital implant dentistry. Personalized dentistry implant treatments for individual patients can be achieved through Additive manufacturing. Herein, we review the applications of Additive manufacturing technologies in oral implantology, including implant surgery, and implant and restoration products, such as surgical guides for implantation, custom titanium meshes for bone augmentation, personalized or non-personalized dental implants, custom trays, implant casts, and implant-support frameworks, among others. In addition, this review also focuses on Additive manufacturing technologies commonly used in oral implantology. Stereolithography, digital light processing, and fused deposition modeling are often used to construct surgical guides and implant casts, whereas direct metal laser sintering, selective laser melting, and electron beam melting can be applied to fabricate dental implants, personalized titanium meshes, and denture frameworks. Moreover, it is sometimes required to combine Additive manufacturing technology with milling and other cutting and finishing techniques to ensure that the product is suitable for its final application.

Abstract
Objective Critically analyzed the existing literature to answer the question "What is the influence of roughness of surfaces for dental implants obtained by additive manufacturing compared to machined on osteoblastic cell adhesion and proliferation?" Design This systematic review followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and was registered in the Open Science Framework. The personalized search strategy was applied to Embase, Pub Med, Scopus, and Science Direct databases and Google Scholar and ProQuest grey literature. The selection process was carried out in two stages independently by two reviewers according to the eligibility criteria. The risk of bias was analyzed using a checklist of important parameters to be considered. Results When applying the search strategy on databases 223 articles were found, after removing the duplicates, 171 were analyzed by title and abstract of which 25 were selected for full reading, of these, 6 met the eligibility criteria. 2 studies were included from the reference list totaling 8 articles included in this systematic review and none were included from the Grey Literature. 7 had a low risk of bias and 1 moderate. Conclusions 1) Roughness is a property that must be analyzed and correlated with the chemical composition, intrinsic to the alloy and resulting from the surface treatment; morphology of topographic peaks and valleys; printing technique and its parameters; 2) Need for more studies on the biomolecular level to elucidate the mechanism by which the roughness and the morphology of topographical peaks and valleys descriptive of roughness influence osteoblastic adhesion and proliferation.

Abstract
This comprehensive review focuses on polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a synthetic thermoplastic polymer, for applications in dentistry. As a high-performance polymer, PEEK is intrinsically robust yet biocompatible, making it an ideal substitute for titanium-the current gold standard in dentistry. PEEK, however, is also inert due to its low surface energy and brings challenges when employed in dentistry. Inert PEEK often falls short of achieving a few critical requirements of clinical dental materials, such as adhesiveness, osseoconductivity, antibacterial properties, and resistance to tribocorrosion. This study aims to review these properties and explore the various surface modification strategies that enhance the performance of PEEK. Literatures searches were conducted on Google Scholar, Research Gate, and PubMed databases using PEEK, polyetheretherketone, osseointegration of PEEK, PEEK in dentistry, tribology of PEEK, surface modifications, dental applications, bonding strength, surface topography, adhesive in dentistry, and dental implant as keywords. Literature on the topics of surface modification to increase adhesiveness, tribology, and osseointegration of PEEK were included in the review. The unavailability of full texts was considered when excluding literature. Surface modifications via chemical strategies (such as sulfonation, plasma treatment, UV treatment, surface coating, surface polymerization, etc.) and/or physical approaches (such as sandblasting, laser treatment, accelerated neutral atom beam, layer-by-layer assembly, particle leaching, etc.) discussed in the literature are summarized and compared. Further, approaches such as the incorporation of bioactive materials, e.g., osteogenic agents, antibacterial agents, etc., to enhance the abovementioned desired properties are explored. This review presents surface modification as a critical and essential approach to enhance the biological performance of PEEK in dentistry by retaining its mechanical robustness.

Abstract
Objectives To compare mechanical properties of 3D-printed and milled poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) materials. To define post-production treatments to enhance biocompatibility of 3D-printed PEEK. Methods Standardised PEEK samples were produced via milling and fused-deposition-modelling 3D-printing. To evaluate mechanical properties, tensile strength, maximum flexural strength, fracture toughness, and micro-hardness were measured.3D printed samples were sandblasted with 50 or 125 μm aluminium oxide beads to increase biocompatibility.Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluated microstructure of 3D-printed and sandblasted samples, estimating surface roughness at scales from 1mm-1μm.Cell adhesion on 3D printed and sandblasted materials was evaluated by culturing primary human endothelial cells and osteoblasts (HUVEC, HOBS) and evaluating cell growth over 48 h. Results 3D printed materials had lower tensile strength, flexural strength, and fracture toughness, but higher micro-hardness.SEM analysis of 3D-printed surfaces showed sandblasting with 125 and 50 μm silica particles removed printing defects and created roughened surfaces for increased HUVEC and HOBs uniform cell adhesion and distribution. No cytotoxicity was observed over a 48h period, and all cells demonstrated >95% viability. Clinical significance 3D-printing of PEEK is an emerging technology with clear advantages over milling in maxillofacial implant production. Nonetheless, this manufacturing modality may produce 3D printed PEEK devices with lower mechanical resistance parameters compared to milled PEEK but with values compatible with natural bone. PEEK has poor osteoconductivity and ability to osseointegrate. Sandblasting is an inexpensive modality to remove irregular surface defects and create uniform micro-rough surfaces supporting cell attachment and potentially enhancing integration of PEEK implants with host tissue.

Abstract
The application of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) in additive manufacturing (AM) can effectively reduce material and energy waste in the manufacturing process and help achieve lightweight parts. As a result, AM PEEK is considered an emerging technology in line with green manufacturing concepts. However, 3D-printed PEEK parts often suffer from low mechanical strength and poor surface quality due to the immaturity of the manufacturing process. Therefore, this research investigates the feasibility of improving the surface quality of 3D-printed parts by dry milling post-processing. Meanwhile, the mechanical strength of the parts is improved by optimizing the printing process parameters, and the effects of mechanical strength on milling quality are investigated. The novelty of this research is to design experiments based on the anisotropy of 3D-printed parts. For the first time, the delamination of the milling post-processing surface of 3D-printed PEEK parts is investigated. The results show that the milled surfaces of 3D-printed PEEK parts are prone to delamination problems. The printing direction has a significant effect on the quality of milling post-processing, whereas the milling directions have little effect on milling post-processing quality. The delamination problem can be significantly improved by a side milling process where the specimen is printed at 90° and then milled. Milling surface delamination is caused by the poor mechanical strength (internal bonding) of 3D-printed PEEK parts. By improving the mechanical strength of 3D-printed PEEK parts, the delamination of its milled surfaces can be significantly improved.

Abstract
Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF)-based 3D printing is an efficient technique for developing medical implants, but it is not very useful in developing small yet mechanically robust design-specific fixtures such as dental implants (<15 mm). Specifically, it is challenging to 3D print robust Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) small implants due to PEEK's high melting temperature and melt viscosity. However, in this study, we efficiently utilize high-temperature FFF to develop the first-of-its-kind patient-specific robust PEEK dental implants with high print resolution. Specifically, we explore the effects of critical FFF processing conditions on the mechanical properties of the implants and subsequently determine an optimized set of processing conditions that are essential in developing durable dental implant systems. Our results indicate that the 3D printed dental implants exhibit good fatigue properties and suffice the clinical and industrial requirements for dental implants. Furthermore, we prove that the 3D printed implants exhibit adequate mechanical durability even after simulated (accelerated) aging of 30 years.

Abstract
Three-dimensional printing technology with the rapid development of printing materials are widely recognized as a promising way to fabricate bioartificial bone tissues. In consideration of the disadvantages of bone substitutes, including poor mechanical properties, lack of vascularization and insufficient osteointegration, functional modification strategies can provide multiple functions and desired characteristics of printing materials, enhance their physicochemical and biological properties in bone tissue engineering. Thus, this review focuses on the advances of functional engineering strategies for 3D printed biomaterials in hard tissue replacement. It is structured as introducing 3D printing technologies, properties of printing materials (metals, ceramics and polymers) and typical functional engineering strategies utilized in the application of bone, cartilage and joint regeneration.

Abstract
Over the past ten years, the use of additive manufacturing techniques, also known as "3D printing", has steadily increased in a variety of scientific fields. There are a number of inherent advantages to these fabrication methods over conventional manufacturing due to the way that they work, which is based on the layer-by-layer material-deposition principle. These benefits include the accurate attribution of complex, pre-designed shapes, as well as the use of a variety of innovative raw materials. Its main advantage is the ability to fabricate custom shapes with an interior lattice network connecting them and a porous surface that traditional manufacturing techniques cannot adequately attribute. Such structures are being used for direct implantation into the human body in the biomedical field in areas such as bio-printing, where this potential is being heavily utilized. The fabricated items must be made of biomaterials with the proper mechanical properties, as well as biomaterials that exhibit characteristics such as biocompatibility, bioresorbability, and biodegradability, in order to meet the strict requirements that such procedures impose. The most significant biomaterials used in these techniques are listed in this work, but their advantages and disadvantages are also discussed in relation to the aforementioned properties that are crucial to their use.

Abstract
Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is considered a potential orthopedic material due to the excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance, but its biological inertness hampers its further clinical application. In this study, advanced femtosecond laser microfabrication technology was utilized to induce the change of the surface characteristics of PEEK to improve its bioactivity. Meanwhile, the mechanism of surface reaction and improved bioactivity was interpreted in detail from the perspective of material science. The surface physical-chemical characterization results showed that femtosecond laser etching could increase the surface energy, and the contents of active sites including amorphous carbon and carbon-hydroxyl on PEEK surfaces. In vitro validation experiments demonstrated that the samples etched with a femtosecond laser had a better ability to induce apatite deposition and cell proliferation than those treated with popular sulfonation modification, which would lead to better bioactivity and osteointegration. The current work fully presents the mechanism of the femtosecond laser low-temperature plasma effect on PEEK and the resulting surface characteristics, which could broaden the application of PEEK in the orthopedic field. Moreover, it has great potential in the surface design and modification of other biomaterials with enhanced bioactivity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to determine the effect of two plasma surface treatments on the biologic responses of PEEK medical implants manufactured by fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printing technology. METHODS This study created standard PEEK samples using an FFF 3D printer. After fabrication, half of the samples were polished to simulate a smooth PEEK surface. Then, argon (Ar) or oxygen (O2) plasma was used to modify the bioactivity of FFF 3D printed and polished PEEK samples. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a profilometer were used to determine the microstructure and roughness of the sample surfaces. The wettability of the sample surface was assessed using a drop shape analyzer (DSA) after plasma treatment and at various time points following storage in a closed environment. Cell adhesion, metabolic activity, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation of SAOS-2 osteoblasts were evaluated to determine the in vitro osteogenic activity. RESULTS SEM analysis revealed that several spherical nanoscale particles and humps appeared on sample surfaces following plasma treatment. The wettability measurement demonstrated that plasma surface treatment significantly increased the surface hydrophilicity of PEEK samples, with only a slight aging effect found after 21 days. Cell adhesion, spreading, proliferation, and differentiation of SAOS-2 osteoblasts were also up-regulated after plasma treatment. Additionally, PEEK samples treated with O2 plasma demonstrated a higher degree of bioactivation than those treated with Ar. SIGNIFICANCE Plasma-modified PEEK based on FFF 3D printing technology was a feasible and prospective bone grafting material for bone/dental implants.

Abstract
Customized alveolar bone augmentation provides sufficient and precisely regenerated bone tissue for subsequent dental implant placement. Although some clinical cases have confirmed the successful use of the patient-specific polyetheretherketone (PEEK) scaffolds, the biomechanical property and osteogenic performance of the patient-specific PEEK scaffolds remain unclear. The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the space maintenance capacity and osteogenic performance of the patient-specific PEEK scaffolds for customized alveolar bone augmentation and (2) to compare the biomechanical properties of three-dimensionally printed titanium scaffolds and PEEK scaffolds. Both titanium scaffolds and PEEK scaffolds were designed and manufactured via additive manufacturing technology combined with computer-aided design (CAD). In three-point bending tests, the bending strength of the PEEK scaffold was about 1/3 that of the titanium scaffold. Accordingly, the equivalent strain value of the internal bone graft beneath the PEEK scaffold was about 3 times that beneath the titanium scaffold in finite element analysis, but the maximum deformations of both scaffolds were less than 0.05 mm. Meanwhile, in in vivo experiments, it is demonstrated that both scaffolds have similar space maintenance capacity and bone ingrowth efficiency. In conclusion, patient-specific PEEK scaffolds showed significantly lower biomechanical strength but comparable space maintenance and osteogenic properties to the titanium counterpart. Compared with traditional guided bone regeneration (GBR) surgery, both patient-specific PEEK and titanium scaffolds can achieve excellent osteogenic space maintenance ability. This study provides a preliminary basis for the clinical translation of the nonmetallic barrier membrane in customized alveolar bone augmentation.

Abstract
Poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) has seen increasing use in biomedical fields as a replacement for metal implants. Accordingly, the surface functionalities of PEEK are important for the development of medical devices. We have focused on the application of photoinduced reactions in PEEK to immobilize a functional polymer via radical generation on the surface, which can react with hydrocarbon groups. In this study, we used zwitterionic copolymers comprising 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) units and n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) units with various molecular architectures for surface modification. A random copolymer (poly(MPC-co-BMA) (r-PMB)), an AB-type diblock copolymer (di-PMB), and an ABA-type triblock copolymer (tri-PMB) (A segment: poly(BMA); B segment: poly(MPC)) were synthesized with the same monomer compositions. All PMBs were successfully immobilized on the PEEK surface via UV irradiation after the dip-coating process, regardless of their molecular structure. In this reaction, the alkyl group of the BMA unit functioned as a photoreactive site on the PEEK surface. This indicates that the molecular structure differences affect the surface properties. For example, compared to r-PMB and tri-PMB, di-PMB-modified surfaces exhibited an extremely low water contact angle of approximately 10°. The findings of this study demonstrate that this surface functionalization method does not require a low-molecular-weight compound, such as an initiator, and can be applied to the surface of inert PEEK through a simple photoreaction under room temperature, atmospheric pressure, and dry state conditions.

Abstract
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been widely applied in orthopedics because of its excellent mechanical properties, radiolucency, and biocompatibility. However, the bioinertness and poor osteointegration of PEEK have greatly limited its further application. Growing evidence proves that physical factors of implants, including their architecture, surface morphology, stiffness, and mechanical stimulation, matter as much as the composition of their surface chemistry. This review focuses on the multiple strategies for the physical modification of PEEK implants through adjusting their architecture, surface morphology, and stiffness. Many research findings show that transforming the architecture and incorporating reinforcing fillers into PEEK can affect both its mechanical strength and cellular responses. Modified PEEK surfaces at the macro scale and micro/nano scale have positive effects on cell-substrate interactions. More investigations are necessary to reach consensus on the optimal design of PEEK implants and to explore the efficiency of various functional implant surfaces. Soft-tissue integration has been ignored, though evidence shows that physical modifications also improve the adhesion of soft tissue. In the future, ideal PEEK implants should have a desirable topological structure with better surface hydrophilicity and optimum surface chemistry.

Abstract
The repairment of critical-sized bone defects is a serious problem that stimulates the development of new biomaterials. In this study, nanohydroxyapatite (nHA)-doped porous polyetheretherketone (pPEEK) were successfully fabricated by the thermally induced phase separation method and hydrothermal treatment. Structural analysis was performed by X-ray diffraction. The water contact angles and scanning electron microscopy were measured to assess physical properties of surfaces. The mechanical strength of the composites is also determined. Microcomputed tomography is used to characterize the nHA content of the composites. The in vitro bioactivity of the composites with or without nHA was investigated by using murine pre-osteoblasts MC3T3-E1, and the results of cytotoxicity and cell proliferation assays revealed that the cytocompatibility of all specimens was good. Adherence assays were employed to examine the adhesion and morphology of cells on different materials. However, nHA-doped composites induced cell attachment and cell spreading more significantly. Osteogenic differentiation was investigated using alkaline phosphatase activity and alizarin red staining, and these in vitro results demonstrated that composites containing nHA particles enhanced osteoblast differentiation. Its effectiveness for promoting osteogenesis was also confirmed in an in vivo animal experiment using a tibial defective rat model. After 8 weeks of implantation, compared to the pure PEEK and pPEEK without nHA groups, the nHA-pPEEK group showed better osteogenic activity. The results indicate that the nHA-pPEEK composites are possibly a well-designed bone substitute for critical-sized bone defects by promoting bone regeneration and osteointegration successfully.

Abstract
Dental implantation is an effective method for the treatment of loose teeth, but the threaded dental implants used in the clinic cannot match with the tooth extraction socket. A root analogue implant (RAI) has the congruence shape, which reduces the damage to bone and soft tissue. Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have the advantages of high precision, flexibility, and easy operation, becoming the main manufacturing method of RAI in basic research. The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize AM technologies used for RAI manufacturing as well as the factors affecting successful implantation. First, it introduces the AM technologies according to different operating principles and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Then the influences of materials, structure design, surface characteristics, implant site, and positioning are discussed, providing reference for designers and dentists. Finally, it addresses the gap between basic research and clinical application for additive manufactured RAIs and discusses the current challenges and future research directions for this field.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing provides a novel and robust way to prepare medical product with anatomic matched geometry and tailored mechanical performance. In this study, the surface characteristics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of fused deposition modeling (FDM) prepared polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) were systematically studied. During the FDM process, the crystal unit cell and thermal attribute of PEEK material remained unchanged, whereas the surface layer generally became more hydrophilic with an obvious reduction in surface hardness. Raster angle has a significant effect on the mechanical strength but not on the failure mechanism. In practice, FDM fabricated PEEK acted more like a laminate rather than a unified structure. Its main failure mechanism was correlated to the internal voids. The results show that horizontal infill orientation with 30° raster angle is promising for a better comprehensive mechanical performance, and the corresponding tensile, flexural, and shear strengths are (76.5 ± 1.4) MPa, (149.7 ± 3.0) MPa, and (55.5 ± 1.8) MPa, respectively. The findings of this study provide guidelines for FDM-PEEK to enable its realization in applications such as orthopedic implants.

Abstract
Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is an organic polymer that has excellent mechanical, chemical properties and can be additively manufactured (3D-printed) with ease. The use of 3D-printed PEEK has been growing in many fields. This article systematically reviews the current status of 3D-printed PEEK that has been used in various areas, including medical, chemical, aerospace, and electronics. A search of the use of 3D-printed PEEK articles published until September 2021 in various fields was performed using various databases. After reviewing the articles, and those which matched the inclusion criteria set for this systematic review, we found that the printing of PEEK is mainly performed by fused filament fabrication (FFF) or fused deposition modeling (FDM) printers. Based on the results of this systematic review, it was concluded that PEEK is a versatile material, and 3D-printed PEEK is finding applications in numerous industries. However, most of the applications are still in the research phase. Still, given how the research on PEEK is progressing and its additive manufacturing, it will soon be commercialized for many applications in numerous industries.

Abstract
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a high-performance thermoplastic polymer which has found increasing application in orthopaedics and has shown a lot of promise for 'made-to-measure' implants via additive manufacturing approaches. However, PEEK is bioinert and needs to undergo surface modification to make it at least osteoconductive to ensure a more rapid, improved, and stable fixation that will last longer in vivo. One approach to solving this issue is to modify PEEK with bioactive agents such as hydroxyapatite (HA). The work reported in this study demonstrates the direct 3D printing of PEEK/HA composites of up to 30 weight percent (wt%) HA using a Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) approach. The surface characteristics and in vitro properties of the composite materials were investigated. X-ray diffraction revealed the samples to be semi-crystalline in nature, with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry revealing HA materials were available in the uppermost surface of all the 3D printed samples. In vitro testing of the samples at 7 days demonstrated that the PEEK/HA composite surfaces supported the adherence and growth of viable U-2 OS osteoblast like cells. These results demonstrate that FFF can deliver bioactive HA on the surface of PEEK bio-composites in a one-step 3D printing process.

Abstract
Pure orbital blowout fractures occur within the confines of the internal orbital wall. Restoration of orbital form and volume is paramount to prevent functional and esthetic impairment. The anatomical peculiarity of the orbit has encouraged surgeons to develop implants with customized features to restore its architecture. This has resulted in worldwide clinical demand for patient-specific implants (PSIs) designed to fit precisely in the patient's unique anatomy. Material extrusion or Fused filament fabrication (FFF) three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has enabled the fabrication of implant-grade polymers such as Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), paving the way for a more sophisticated generation of biomaterials. This study evaluates the FFF 3D printed PEEK orbital mesh customized implants with a metric considering the relevant design, biomechanical, and morphological parameters. The performance of the implants is studied as a function of varying thicknesses and porous design constructs through a finite element (FE) based computational model and a decision matrix based statistical approach. The maximum stress values achieved in our results predict the high durability of the implants, and the maximum deformation values were under one-tenth of a millimeter (mm) domain in all the implant profile configurations. The circular patterned implant (0.9 mm) had the best performance score. The study demonstrates that compounding multi-design computational analysis with 3D printing can be beneficial for the optimal restoration of the orbital floor.

Abstract
Recent advancements in medical imaging, virtual surgical planning (VSP), and three-dimensional (3D) printing have potentially changed how today's craniomaxillofacial surgeons use patient information for customized treatments. Over the years, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has emerged as the biomaterial of choice to reconstruct craniofacial defects. With advancements in additive manufacturing (AM) systems, prospects for the point-of-care (POC) 3D printing of PEEK patient-specific implants (PSIs) have emerged. Consequently, investigating the clinical reliability of POC-manufactured PEEK implants has become a necessary endeavor. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a quantitative assessment of POC-manufactured, 3D-printed PEEK PSIs for cranial reconstruction through characterization of the geometrical, morphological, and biomechanical aspects of the in-hospital 3D-printed PEEK cranial implants. The study results revealed that the printed customized cranial implants had high dimensional accuracy and repeatability, displaying clinically acceptable morphologic similarity concerning fit and contours continuity. From a biomechanical standpoint, it was noticed that the tested implants had variable peak load values with discrete fracture patterns and failed at a mean (SD) peak load of 798.38 ± 211.45 N. In conclusion, the results of this preclinical study are in line with cranial implant expectations; however, specific attributes have scope for further improvements.

Abstract
3D printing has emerged as a promising fabrication technique for microfluidic devices, overcoming some of the challenges associated with conventional soft lithography. Filament-based polymer extrusion (popularly known as fused deposition modeling (FDM)) is one of the most accessible 3D printing techniques available, offering a wide range of low-cost thermoplastic polymer materials for microfluidic device fabrication. However, low optical transparency is one of the significant limitations of extrusion-based microfluidic devices, rendering them unsuitable for cell culture-related biological applications. Moreover, previously reported extrusion-based devices were largely dependent on fluorescent dyes for cell imaging because of their poor transparency. First, we aim to improve the optical transparency of FDM-based microfluidic devices to enable bright-field microscopy of cells. This is achieved using (1) transparent polymer filament materials such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) glycol (PETg), (2) optimized 3D printing process parameters, and (3) a hybrid approach by integrating 3D printed microfluidic devices with cast poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) blocks. We begin by optimizing four essential 3D printing process parameters (layer height, printing speed, cooling fan speed, and extrusion flow), affecting the overall transparency of 3D printed devices. Optimized parameters produce exceptional optical transparency close to 80% in 3D printed PETg devices. Next, we demonstrate the potential of FDM-based 3D printing to fabricate transparent micromixing devices with complex planar and nonplanar channel networks. Most importantly, cells cultured on native 3D printed PETg surfaces show excellent cell attachment, spreading, and proliferation during 3 days of culture without extracellular matrix coating or surface treatment. Next, we introduce L929 cells inside hybrid PETg-PDMS biomicrofluidic devices as a proof of concept. We demonstrate that 3D printed hybrid biomicrofluidic devices promote cell adhesion, allow bright-field microscopy, and maintain high cell viability for 3 days. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the proposed fabrication approach for developing 3D printed microfluidic devices from other FDM-compatible transparent polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA).

Abstract
Additive manufacturing is becoming an increasingly important technique for the production of dental restorations and assistive devices. The most commonly used systems are based on vat polymerization, e.g., stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP). In contrast, fused filament fabrication (FFF), also known under the brand name fused deposition modeling (FDM), is rarely applied in the dental field. This might be due to the reduced accuracy and resolution of FFF compared to vat polymerization. However, the use of FFF in the dental sector seems very promising for in-house production since it presents a cost-effective and straight forward method. The manufacturing of nearly ready-to-use parts with only minimal post-processing can be considered highly advantageous. Therefore, the objective was to implement FFF in a digital dental workflow. The present report demonstrates the production of surgical guides for implant insertion by FFF. Furthermore, a novel approach using a temperature-sensitive filament for bite registration plates holds great promise for a simplified workflow. In combination with a medical-grade filament, a multi-material impression tray was printed for optimized impression taking of edentulous patients. Compared to the conventional way, the printed thermoplastic material is pleasant to model and can allow clean and fast work on the patient.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) of high temperature polymers, specifically polyaryletherketones (PAEK), is gaining significant attention for medical implant applications. As 3D printing systems evolve toward point of care manufacturing, research on this topic continues to expand. Specific regulatory guidance is being developed for the safe management of 3D printing systems in a hospital environment. PAEK implants can benefit from many advantages of AM such as design freedom, material and antibacterial drug incorporation, and enhanced bioactivity provided by cancellous bone-like porous designs. In addition to AM PAEK bioactivity, the biomechanical strength of 3D printed implants is crucial to their performance and thus widely studied. In this review, we discuss the printing conditions that have been investigated so far for additively manufactured PAEK implant applications. The effect of processing parameters on the biomechanical strength of implants is summarized, and the bioactivity of PAEKs, along with material and drug incorporation, is also covered in detail. Finally, the therapeutic areas in which 3D printed PAEK implants are investigated and utilized are reviewed.

Abstract
Electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves by implanted electrodes is an effective treatment for certain pelvic floor diseases. As well as intravesical electrical stimulation, this predominantly includes stimulation of the sacral nerve, tibial nerve, and pudendal nerve. The pudendal nerve is one of the main nerves that stimulate pelvic floor muscles, external urethral meatus, and the anal sphincter and pelvic organs, and it may have effects on frequent urination, urgency, dysuria, and perineal pain. It is difficult to locate because of its anatomical course, however, leading to difficulties fixing the electrode, which increases the difficulty of pudendal nerve electrical stimulation in clinical practice. In the current study 3D printed navigation was used to solve these problems. Combined with autopsy data and patient pelvic and nerve data, a personalized design was generated. Neural modulation of the pudendal nerve was achieved by implanting the lead with the guidance of 3D printed navigation. 3D printed navigation can maximize the phase II conversion rate, reduce the difficulty of surgery, shorten the operation time, reduce damage to additional organs and blood vessels, and increase the accuracy of electrode implantation, and it can be performed while the patient is awake. It is an accurate, reversible, efficient, and minimally invasive surgery.

Abstract
The manufacture of polyetheretherketone/hydroxyapatite (PEEK/HA) composites is seen as a viable approach to help enhance direct bone apposition in orthopaedic implants. A range of methods have been used to produce composites, including Selective Laser Sintering and injection moulding. Such techniques have drawbacks and lack flexibility to manufacture complex, custom-designed implants. 3D printing gets around many of the restraints and provides new opportunities for innovative solutions that are structurally suited to meet the needs of the patient. This work reports the direct 3D printing of extruded PEEK/HA composite filaments via a Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) approach. In this work samples are 3D printed by a custom modified commercial printer Ultimaker 2+ (UM2+). SEM-EDX and µCT analyses show that HA particles are evenly distributed throughout the bulk and across the surface of the native 3D printed samples, with XRD highlighting up to 50% crystallinity and crystalline domains clearly observed in SEM and HR-TEM analyses. This highlights the favourable temperature conditions during 3D printing. The yield stress and ultimate tensile strength obtained for all the samples are comparable to human femoral cortical bone. The results show how FFF 3D printing of PEEK/HA composites up to 30 wt% HA can be achieved.

Abstract
In recent years, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been increasingly employed as an implant material in clinical applications. Although PEEK is biocompatible, chemically stable, and radiolucent and has an elastic modulus similar to that of natural bone, it suffers from poor integration with surrounding bone tissue after implantation. To improve the bioactivity of PEEK, numerous strategies for functionalizing the PEEK surface and changing the PEEK structure have been proposed. Inspired by the components, structure, and function of bone tissue, this review discusses strategies to enhance the biocompatibility of PEEK implants and provides direction for fabricating multifunctional implants in the future.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) of patient-specific implants (PSIs) is gradually moving towards in-house or point-of-care (POC) manufacturing. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been used in cranioplasty cases as a reliable alternative to other alloplastic materials. As only a few fused filament fabrication (FFF) printers are suitable for in-house manufacturing, the quality characteristics of the implants fabricated by FFF technology are still under investigated. This paper aimed to investigate PEEK PSIs fabricated in-house for craniofacial reconstruction, discussing the key challenges during the FFF printing process. Two exemplary cases of class III (Group 1) and class IV (Group 2) craniofacial defects were selected for the fabrication of PEEK PSIs. Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array was selected for the following nonthermal printing process parameters, i.e., layer thickness, infill rate, number of shells, and infill pattern, and an assessment of the dimensional accuracy of the fabricated implants was made. The root mean square (RMS) values revealed higher deviations in Group 1 PSIs (0.790 mm) compared to Group 2 PSIs (0.241 mm). Horizontal lines, or the characteristic FFF stair-stepping effect, were more perceptible across the surface of Group 1 PSIs. Although Group 2 PSIs revealed no discoloration, Group 1 PSIs displayed different zones of crystallinity. These results suggest that the dimensional accuracy of PSIs were within the clinically acceptable range; however, attention must be paid towards a requirement of optimum thermal management during the printing process to fabricate implants of uniform crystallinity.

Abstract
Poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic polymer with potential for use in a variety of metal replacement applications due to its high strength to weight ratio. This combination of properties makes it an ideal material for use in the production of bespoke replacement parts for out-of-earth manufacturing purposes, in particular on the International Space Station (ISS). Additive manufacturing (AM) may be employed for the production of these parts, as it has enabled new fabrication pathways for articles with complex design considerations. However, AM of PEEK via fused filament fabrication (FFF) encounters significant challenges, mostly stemming from the semi crystalline nature of PEEK and its associated high melting temperature. This makes PEEK highly susceptible to changes in processing conditions which leads to a large reported variation in the literature on the final performance of PEEK. This has limited the adaption of FFF printing of PEEK in space applications where quality assurance and reproducibility are paramount. In recent years, several research studies have examined the effect of printing parameters on the performance of the 3D-printed PEEK parts. The aim of the current review is to provide comprehensive information in relation to the process-structure-property relationships in FFF 3D-printing of PEEK to provide a clear baseline to the research community and assesses its potential for space applications, including out-of-earth manufacturing.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this three-year prospective study was to examine the outcome of a solution for full-arch rehabilitation through a fixed implant-supported hybrid prosthesis (polyetheretherketone (PEEK)-acrylic resin) used in conjunction with the All-on-4 concept. Methods: Thirty-seven patients (29 females, 8 males), with an age range of 38 to 78 years (average: 59.8 years) were rehabilitated with 49 full-arch implant-supported prostheses (12 maxillary rehabilitations, 13 mandibular rehabilitations and 12 bimaxillary rehabilitations). The primary outcome measure was prosthetic survival. Secondary outcome measures were marginal bone loss, plaque and bleeding scores, veneer adhesion issues, biological complications, mechanical complications, and the patients’ subjective evaluation. Results: There were two patients (maxillary rehabilitations) lost to follow-up, while one patient withdrew (maxillary rehabilitation). One patient with bimaxillary rehabilitation fractured the mandibular PEEK framework, rendering a 98% prosthetic survival rate. Implant survival was 100%. Average (standard deviation) marginal bone loss at 3-years was 0.40 mm (0.73 mm). Veneer adhesion was the only technical complication (n = 8 patients), resolved for all patients. Nine patients (n = 11 prostheses) experienced mechanical complications (all resolved): fracture of acrylic resin crowns (n = 3 patients), prosthetic and abutment screw loosening (n = 4 patients and 3 patients, respectively), abutment wearing (n = 1 patient). One patient experienced a biological complication (peri-implant pathology), resolved through non-surgical therapy. A 90% satisfaction rate was registered for the patients’ subjective evaluation. Conclusions: Based on the results, the three-year outcome suggests the proposed rehabilitation solution as a legitimate treatment option, providing a potential shock-absorbing alternative that could benefit the implant biological outcome.

Abstract
3D printed biomaterials have been extensively investigated and developed in the field of bone regeneration related to clinical issues. However, specific applications of 3D printed biomaterials in different dental areas have seldom been reported. In this study, we aimed to and successfully fabricated 3D poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)/β-tricalcium phosphate (3D-PLGA/TCP) and 3D β-tricalcium phosphate (3D-TCP) scaffolds using two relatively distinct 3D printing (3DP) technologies. Conjunctively, we compared and investigated mechanical and biological responses on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). Physicochemical properties of the scaffolds, including pore structure, chemical elements, and compression modulus, were characterized. hDPSCs were cultured on scaffolds for subsequent investigations of biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. Our findings indicate that 3D printed PLGA/TCP and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) scaffolds possessed a highly interconnected and porous structure. 3D-TCP scaffolds exhibited better compressive strength than 3D-PLGA/TCP scaffolds, while the 3D-PLGA/TCP scaffolds revealed a flexible mechanical performance. The introduction of 3D structure and β-TCP components increased the adhesion and proliferation of hDPSCs and promoted osteogenic differentiation. In conclusion, 3D-PLGA/TCP and 3D-TCP scaffolds, with the incorporation of hDPSCs as a personalized restoration approach, has a prospective potential to repair minor and critical bone defects in oral and maxillofacial surgery, respectively.

Abstract
The biomaterials polylactic acid (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), and hydroxyapatite (HA) were selected to fabricate composite filaments for 3D printing fused filament fabrication (FFF), which was used to fabricate a composite biomaterial for an interlocking nail for canine diaphyseal fractures instead of metal bioinert materials. Bioactive materials were used to increase biological activities and provide a high possibility for bone regeneration to eliminate the limitations of interlocking nails. HA was added to PLA and PCL granules in three ratios according to the percentage of HA: 0%, 5%, and 15% (PLA/PCL, PLA/PCL/5HA, and PLA/PCL/15HA, respectively), before the filaments were extruded. The test specimens were 3D-printed from the extruded composite filaments using an FFF printer. Then, a group of test specimens was coated by silk fibroin (SF) using the lyophilization technique to increase their biological properties. Mechanical, biological, and chemical characterizations were performed to investigate the properties of the composite biomaterials. The glass transition and melting temperatures of the copolymer were not influenced by the presence of HA in the PLA/PCL filaments. Meanwhile, the presence of HA in the PLA/PCL/15HA group resulted in the highest compressive strength (82.72 ± 1.76 MPa) and the lowest tensile strength (52.05 ± 2.44 MPa). HA provided higher bone cell proliferation, and higher values were observed in the SF coating group. Therefore, FFF 3D-printed filaments using composite materials with bioactive materials have a high potential for use in fabricating an interlocking nail for canine diaphyseal fractures.

Abstract
Cranioplasty represents the surgical repair of bone defects or deformities in the cranium arising from traumatic skull bone fracture, cranial bone deformities, bone cancer, and infections. The actual gold standard in surgery procedures for cranioplasty involves the use of biocompatible materials, and repair or regeneration of large cranial defects is particularly challenging from both a functional and aesthetic point of view. PMMA-based bone cement are the most widely biomaterials adopted in the field, with at least four different surgical approaches. Modifications for improving biological and mechanical functions of PMMA-based bone cement have been suggested. To this aim, the inclusion of antibiotics to prevent infection has been shown to provide a reduction of mechanical properties in bending. Therefore, the development of novel antibacterial active agents to overcome issues related to mechanical properties and bacterial resistance to antibiotics is still encouraged. In this context, mechanical, biological, and antibacterial feature against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus bacterial strains of surgical PMMA cement modified with BG and recently developed Cu-TCP bioactive particles have been highlighted.

Abstract
Polyether-ether-ketone (peek) is one of the most common materials used for load-bearing orthopedic devices owing to its radiolucency and favorable mechanical properties. However, current smooth-surfaced peek implants can lead to fibrous capsule formation. To overcome this issue, here, peek specimens with well-defined internal cross-linked structures (macropore diameters of 1.0–2.0 mm) were fabricated using a three-dimensional (3D) printer, and an acid-etched microporous surface was achieved using injection-molding technology. The cell adhesion properties of smooth and microporous peek specimens was compared in vitro through a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the soft tissue responses to the both microporous and cross-linked structure of different groups were determined in vivo using a New Zealand white rabbit model, and examined through histologic staining and separating test. The results showed that the acid-etched microporous surface promoted human skin fibroblasts (HSF) adherence, while internal cross-linked structure improved the ability of the peek specimen to form a mechanical combination with soft tissue, especially with the 1.5 mm porous specimen.
