Mechanisms of surface groups regulating developmental toxicity of graphene-based nanomaterials via glycerophospholipid metabolic pathway

Surface modification of graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs) may occur in aquatic environment and during intentional preparation. However, the influence of the surface groups on the developmental toxicity of GBNs has not been determined. In this study, we evaluated the developmental toxicity of three GBNs including GO (graphene oxide), RGO (reduced GO) and RGO-N (aminated RGO) by employing zebrafish embryos at environmentally relevant concentrations (1-100 μg/L), and the underlying metabolic mechanisms were explored. The results showed that both GO and RGO-N disturbed the development of zebrafish embryos, and the adverse effect of GO was greater than that of RGO-N. Furthermore, the oxygen-containing groups of GBNs play a more important role in inducing developmental toxicity compared to size, defects and nitrogen-containing groups. Specifically, the epoxide and hydroxyl groups of GBNs increased their intrinsic oxidative potential, promoted the generation of ROS, and caused lipid peroxidation. Moreover, a significant decrease in guanosine and abnormal metabolism of multiple glycerophospholipids were observed in all three GBN-treated groups. Nevertheless, GO exposure triggered more metabolic activities related to lipid peroxidation than RGO or RGO-N exposure, and the disturbance intensity of the same metabolite was greater than that of the other two agents. These findings reveal underlying metabolic mechanisms of GBN-induced developmental toxicity.

Flexible Humidity Sensor Based on a Graphene Oxide-Carbon Nanotube-Modified Co3O4 Nanoparticle-Embedded Laser-Induced Graphene Electrode

To meet evolving humidity monitoring needs, the development of flexible, high-performance humidity sensors is crucial. This study introduces an innovative flexible humidity sensor using a single-step laser scribing technique to fabricate a flexible in situ Co3O4 nanoparticle-embedded laser-induced graphene (Co3O4-LIG) composite electrode. Compared to conventional LIG electrodes, the Co3O4-LIG electrode exhibits improved conductivity and hydrophilicity, enhancing charge transfer and water molecule affinity. The unique two-dimensional structure and exceptional water permeability of graphene oxide (GO) combine with the rapid water response and high specific surface area of carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), thereby assuming a crucial function in the modification and optimization of the performance of humidity sensors. Through the application of a homogenously blended aqueous solution comprising GO and MWCNTs in precise proportions onto the Co3O4-LIG composite electrode, an excellent humidity-responsive layer is established, culminating in the realization of a cutting-edge GO-MWCNTs@Co3O4-LIG flexible humidity sensor. Noteworthy attributes of this sensor include a heightened sensitivity [959.1% (ΔR/R0)], rapid response and recovery times (within 5 and 26 s, respectively), and a noteworthy linearity (R2 = 0.994) across a relative humidity range of 14 to 95%. The findings presented herein offer valuable insights and a practical blueprint for the design and production of flexible humidity sensors.

Exploring surface charge dynamics: implications for AFM height measurements in 2D materials

An often observed artifact in atomic force microscopy investigations of individual monolayer flakes of 2D materials is the inaccurate height derived from topography images, often attributed to capillary or electrostatic forces. Here, we show the existence of a Joule dissipative mechanism related to charge dynamics and supplementing the dissipation due to capillary forces. This particular mechanism arises from the surface conductivity and assumes significance specially in the context of 2D materials on insulating supports. In such scenarios, the oscillating tip induces in-plane charge currents that in many circumstances constitute the main dissipative contribution to amplitude reduction and, consequently, affect the measured height. To investigate this phenomenon, we conduct measurements on monolayer flakes of co-deposited graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide. Subsequently, we introduce a general model that elucidates our observations. This approach offers valuable insights into the dynamics of surface charges and their intricate interaction with the tip.

The application of graphene oxide and ferroptosis in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer: a narrative review

Background and Objective

Colorectal cancer (CRC), a leading global malignancy, continues to challenge the medical community. Despite advancements in surgical, chemotherapeutic, radiation, targeted, and immunotherapeutic strategies, issues like resistance and side effects persist. This review illuminates the potential of ferroptosis, an emerging non-apoptotic cell death form, and graphene oxide (GO), with its distinctive physicochemical properties, in CRC therapy.

Methods

The databases search included PubMed, Medline and Web of Science. Search terms focused on CRC, graphene, GO, ferroptosis, and related aspects in therapy and drug delivery. The time frame for literature retrieval was up to April 2024. Studies in languages other than English were excluded.

Key Content and Findings

Ferroptosis has been recognized for its role in addressing treatment resistance, a notable hurdle in effective CRC management. This form of cell death offers a promising avenue for enhancing the effectiveness of existing treatments. However, understanding its mechanisms and clinical implications in CRC remains an area of active research, with significant progress required for its practical application. Simultaneously, GO, a versatile two-dimensional material, has demonstrated substantial potential in biomedical applications, especially in cancer therapy. Its high specific surface area and unique π-electron domains facilitate the effective binding of chemotherapy drugs, target genes, and photosensitizers. This makes GO a promising candidate in cancer diagnosis and treatment, particularly through tumor photothermal and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Despite these advancements, GO's clinical application faces challenges, including in vitro cytotoxicity and decreased biodegradability, necessitating further research.

Conclusions

This review focuses on the characteristics of GO and ferroptosis, as well as their applications in tumor diagnosis and treatment, with a particular emphasis on their potential in CRC.

Development of Graphene Oxide-Based Anticancer Drug Combination Functionalized with Folic Acid as Nanocarrier for Targeted Delivery of Methotrexate

Graphene has become a prominent material in cancer research in recent years. Graphene and its derivatives also attract attention as carriers in drug delivery systems. In this study, we designed a graphene oxide (GO)-based methotrexate (MTX)-loaded and folic acid (FA)-linked drug delivery system. MTX and FA were bound to GO synthesized from graphite. MTX/FA/GO drug delivery system and system components were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential calorimetric analysis (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), zeta potential analysis, and dimension measurement (DLS) studies. SEM and TEM images confirmed the nanosheet structure of GO synthesized from graphite, and it was shown that MTX/FA binding to GO transformed the two-dimensional GO into a three-dimensional structure. FTIR and DSC graphs confirmed that oxygen atoms were bound to GO with the formation of carboxylic, hydroxyl, epoxide, and carbonyl groups as a result of the oxidation of graphite, and GO was successfully synthesized. Additionally, these analyses showed that MTX and FA bind physicochemically to the structure of GO. The in vitro Franz diffusion test was performed as a release kinetic test. The release kinetics mathematical model and correlation coefficient (R2) of MTX-loaded GO/FA nanomaterials were found to be the Higuchi model and 0.9785, respectively. Stiffness analyses showed that adding FA to this release system facilitated the entry of the drug into the cell by directing the system to target cells. As a result of the stiffness analyses, the stiffness values of the control cell group, free MTX, and MTX/FA/GO applied cells were measured as 2.34 kPa, 1.87 kPa, and 1.56 kPa, respectively. According to these results, it was seen that MTX/FA/GO weakened the cancer cells. Combined use of the MTX/FA/GO drug delivery system had a higher cytotoxic effect than free MTX on the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line. The results showed that the synthesized MTX/FA/GO material has promising potential in cancer cell-specific targeted therapy for MTX as a drug delivery system.

A minireview on the utilization of petroleum coke as a precursor for carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs): perspectives and potential applications

The remarkable properties of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) have stimulated a significant increase in studies on different 0D, 1D and 2D nanostructures, which have promising applications in various fields of science and technology. However, the use of graphite as a raw material, which is essential for their production, limits the scalability of these nanostructures. In this context, petroleum coke (PC), a by-product of the coking process in petrochemical industry with a high carbon content (>80 wt%), is emerging as an attractive and low-cost option for the synthesis of carbonaceous nanostructures. This brief review presents recent research related to the use of PC as a precursor for CNMs, such as graphene and its oxidized (GO) and reduced (RGO) variants, among other carbon-based nanostructures. The work highlights the performance of these materials in specific areas of application. In addition, this review describes and analyzes strategies for transforming low-cost, environmentally friendly waste into advanced technological innovations with greater added value, in line with the UN's 2030 Agenda.

A Pressure and Proximity Sensor Based on Laser-Induced Graphene

Smart wearable devices are extensively utilized across diverse domains due to their inherent advantages of flexibility, portability, and real-time monitoring. Among these, flexible sensors demonstrate exceptional pliability and malleability, making them a prominent focus in wearable electronics research. However, the implementation of flexible wearable sensors often entails intricate and time-consuming processes, leading to high costs, which hinder the advancement of the entire field. Here, we report a pressure and proximity sensor based on oxidized laser-induced graphene (oxidized LIG) as a dielectric layer sandwiched by patterned LIG electrodes, which is characterized by high speed and cost-effectiveness. It is found that in the low-frequency range of fewer than 0.1 kHz, the relative dielectric constant of the oxidized LIG layer reaches an order of magnitude of 104. The pressure mode of this bimodal capacitive sensor is capable of detecting pressures within the range of 1.34 Pa to 800 Pa, with a response time of several hundred milliseconds. The proximity mode involves the application of stimulation using an acrylic probe, which demonstrates a detection range from 0.05 mm to 37.8 mm. Additionally, it has a rapid response time of approximately 100 ms, ensuring consistent signal variations throughout both the approach and withdrawal phases. The sensor fabrication method proposed in this project effectively minimizes expenses and accelerates the preparation cycle through precise control of laser processing parameters to shape the electrode-dielectric layer-electrode within a single substrate material. Based on their exceptional combined performance, our pressure and proximity sensors exhibit significant potential in practical applications such as motion monitoring and distance detection.

BMSCs-driven graphite oxide-grafted-carbon fibers reinforced polyetheretherketone composites as functional implants: in vivo biosafety and osteogenesis

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are increasingly becoming a potential treatment approach for bone injuries due to the multi-lineage differentiation potential, ability to recognize damaged tissue sites and secrete bioactive factors that can enhance tissue repair. The aim of this work was to improve osteogenesis of carbon fibers reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) implants through bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs)-based therapy. Moreover, bioactive graphene oxide (GO) was introduced into CF/PEEK by grafting GO onto CF to boost the osteogenic efficiency of BMSCs. Subsequently, CF/PEEK was implanted into the symmetrical skull defect models of SD rats. Then in vivo biosafety and osteogenesis were evaluated. The results indicated that surface wettability of CF/PEEK was effectively improved by GO, which was beneficial for the adhesion of BMSCs. The pathological tissue sections stained with H&E showed no significant pathological change in the main organs including heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney, which indicated no acute systemic toxicity. Furthermore, bone mineralization deposition rate of CF/PEEK containing GO was 2.2 times that of pure CF/PEEK. The X-ray test showed that the surface of CF/PEEK containing GO was obviously covered by more newly formed bone tissue than pure CF/PEEK after 8 weeks of implantation. This work demonstrated that GO effectively enhanced surface bioactivity of CF/PEEK and assisted BMSCs in accelerating differentiation into bone tissue, providing a feasible strategy for improving osteogenesis of PEEK and CF/PEEK.

The role of reduced graphene oxide on mitigation of lead phytotoxicity in Triticum aestivum L.plants at morphological and physiological levels

Rapid global industrialization and an increase in population have enhanced the risk of heavy metals accumulation in plant bodies to disrupt the morphological, biochemical, and physiological processes of plants. To cope with this situation, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) NPs were used first time to mitigate abiotic stresses caused in plant. In this study, rGO NPs were synthesized and reduced with Tecoma stans plant leave extract through modified Hummer's methods. The well prepared rGO NPs were characterized by ultra-violet visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Zeta potential, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). However, pot experiment was conducted with four different concentrations (15, 30, 60, 120 mg/L) of rGO NPs and three different concentrations (300, 500,700 mg/L) of lead (Pb) stress were applied. To observe the mitigative effects of rGO NPs, 30 mg/L of rGO NPs and 700 mg/L of Pb were used in combination. Changes in morphological and biochemical characteristics of wheat plants were observed for both Pb stress and rGO NPs treatments. Pb was found to inhibit the morphological and biochemical characteristics of plants. rGO NPs alone as well as in combination with Pb was found to increase the chlorophyll content of wheat plants. Under Pb stress conditions and rGO NPs treatments, antioxidant enzyme activities like ascorbate peroxidases (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) were observed. Current findings revealed that greenly reduced graphene oxide NPs can effectively promote growth in wheat plants under Pb stress by elevating chlorophyll content of leaves, reducing the Pb uptake, and suppressing ROS produced due to Pb toxicity.

Nanoarchitectonics and Biological Properties of Nanocomposite Thermosensitive Chitosan Hydrogels Obtained with the Use of Uridine 5'-Monophosphate Disodium Salt

Currently, an important group of biomaterials used in the research in the field of tissue engineering is thermosensitive chitosan hydrogels. Their main advantage is the possibility of introducing their precursors (sols) into the implantation site using a minimally invasive method-by injection. In this publication, the results of studies on the new chitosan structures in the form of thermosensitive hydrogels containing graphene oxide as a nanofiller are presented. These systems were prepared from chitosan lactate and chitosan chloride solutions with the use of a salt of pyrimidine nucleotide-uridine 5'-monophosphate disodium salt-as the cross-linking agent. In order to perform the characterization of the developed hydrogels, the sol-gel transition temperature of the colloidal systems was first determined based on rheological measurements. The hydrogels were also analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy and SEM. Biological studies assessed the cytotoxicity (resazurin assay) and genotoxicity (alkaline version of the comet assay) of the nanocomposite chitosan hydrogels against normal human BJ fibroblasts. The conducted research allowed us to conclude that the developed hydrogels containing graphene oxide are an attractive material for potential use as scaffolds for the regeneration of damaged tissues.

The impact of nTiO2 and GO (graphene oxide), and their combinations, on freshwater Chlorella sp.: a comparative study in lake water and BG-11 media

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2) and graphene oxide (GO) are extensively used nanomaterials in various products and applications. Freshwater ecosystems are a crucial sink for these pollutants, posing severe threats to aquatic organisms. Although multiple studies have investigated the pristine toxicity of nTiO2 and GO in freshwater organisms, the combined toxicity of these materials remains unexplored. Interaction media is a crucial factor in evaluating toxicity nanomaterial toxicity towards algae. In this study, we have investigated the comparative effect of sterilized and filtered freshwater and BG-11 medium on the pristine and combined toxicity of nTiO2 and GO on freshwater algae Chlorella sp. Results indicated that the combination of nTiO2 and GO showed more toxicity when compared to their respective pristine forms. This could be due to the additive effect exhibited by nTiO2 and GO on Chlorella sp. The enhanced growth inhibition for the combined toxicity was in the order of 1 mg L-1 nTiO2 + 1 mg L-1 GO > 1 mg L-1 nTiO2 + 0.1 mg L-1 GO > 0.1 mg L-1 nTiO2 + 1 mg L-1 GO > 0.1 mg L-1 nTiO2 + 0.1 mg L-1 GO. All test groups that interacted in BG-11 media exhibited less toxicity when compared to corresponding groups in the lake water medium. This could be attributed to the cushioning effect of BG-11 medium, providing supplementary nutrition to the algal cells. This signifies that the environmentally relevant conditions could be more detrimental than the laboratory conditions. This study elucidates valuable insights into the potential detrimental effects associated with the combination of nTiO2 and GO on freshwater algae. Furthermore, we have evaluated the growth inhibition, oxidative stress, and photosynthetic activity of Chlorella sp. in both environmentally relevant interaction medium and well-defined culture medium.

[Immunogenic and toxic effects of graphene oxide nanoparticles in mouse skeletal muscles and human red blood cells]

OBJECTIVE

To investigate immunogenic and toxic effects of graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles in mouse skeletal muscles and in human blood in vitro.

METHODS

GO nanoparticles prepared using a probe sonicator were supended in deionized H2O or PBS, and particle size and surface charge of the nanoparticles were measured with dynamic light scattering (DLS). Different concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/mL) of GO suspension or PBS were injected at multiple sites in the gastrocnemius muscle (GN) of C57BL/6 mice, and inflammatory response and immune cell infiltrations were detected with HE and immunofluorescence staining. We also examined the effects of GO nanoparticles on human red blood cell (RBC) morphology, hemolysis and blood coagulation using scanning electron microscope (SEM), spectrophotometry, and thromboelastography (TEG).

RESULTS

GO nanoparticles suspended in PBS exhibited better colloidal dispersity, stability and surface charge effects than those in deionized H2O. In mouse GNs, injection of GO suspensions dose- and time-dependently resulted in sustained muscular inflammation and myofiber degeneration at the injection sites, which lasted till 8 weeks after the injection; immunofluorescence staining revealed obvious infiltration of monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells and CD4+ T cells around the injection sites in mouse GNs. In human RBCs, incubation with GO suspensions at 0.2, 2.0 and 20 mg/mL, but not at 0.002 or 0.02 mg/mL, caused significant alterations of cell morphology and hemolysis. TEG analysis showed significant abnormalities of blood coagulation parameters following treatment with high concentrations of GO.

CONCLUSION

GO nanoparticles can induce sustained inflammatory and immunological responses in mouse GNs and cause RBC hemolysis and blood coagulation impairment, suggesting its muscular toxicity and hematotoxicity at high concentrations.

Experimental and Theoretical Insights into Interfacial Properties of 2D Materials for Selective Water Transport Membranes: A Critical Review

Interfacial properties, such as wettability and friction, play critical roles in nanofluidics and desalination. Understanding the interfacial properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials is crucial in these applications due to the close interaction between liquids and the solid surface. The most important interfacial properties of a solid surface include the water contact angle, which quantifies the extent of interactions between the surface and water, and the water slip length, which determines how much faster water can flow on the surface beyond the predictions of continuum fluid mechanics. This Review seeks to elucidate the mechanism that governs the interfacial properties of diverse 2D materials, including transition metal dichalcogenides (e.g., MoS2), graphene, and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Our work consolidates existing experimental and computational insights into 2D material synthesis and modeling and explores their interfacial properties for desalination. We investigated the capabilities of density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations in analyzing the interfacial properties of 2D materials. Specifically, we highlight how MD simulations have revolutionized our understanding of these properties, paving the way for their effective application in desalination. This Review of the synthesis and interfacial properties of 2D materials unlocks opportunities for further advancement and optimization in desalination.

Enhancing the Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue with Graphene Oxide-Encapsulated g-C3N4/ZnO Ternary Composites

Methylene blue (MB) is a toxic contaminant present in wastewater. Here, we prepared various composites of graphene oxide (GO) with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and zinc oxide (ZnO) for the degradation of MB. In comparison to ZnO (22.9%) and g-C3N4/ZnO (76.0%), the ternary composites of GO/g-C3N4/ZnO showed 90% photocatalytic degradation of MB under a light source after 60 min. The experimental setup and parameters were varied to examine the process and effectiveness of MB degradation. Based on the results of the experiments, a proposed photocatalytic degradation process that explains the roles of GO, ZnO, and g-C3N4 in improving the photocatalytic efficacy of newly prepared GO/g-C3N4/ZnO was explored. Notably, the g-C3N4/ZnO nanocomposite's surface was uniformly covered with ZnO nanorods. The images of the samples clearly demonstrated the porous nature of GO/g-C3N4/ZnO photocatalysts, and even after being mixed with GO, the g-C3N4/ZnO composite retained the layered structure of the original material. The catalyst's porous structure plausibly enhanced the degradation of the contaminants. The high-clarity production of g-C3N4 and the effectiveness of the synthesis protocol were later validated by the absence of any trace contamination in the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) results. The composition of the ZnO elements and their spectra were revealed by the EDS results of the prepared ZnO nanorods, g-C3N4/ZnO, and GO/g-C3N4/ZnO. The outcomes indicated that the nanocomposites were highly uncontaminated and contained all necessary elements to facilitate the transformative process. The results of this experiment could be applied at a large scale, thus proving the effectiveness of photocatalysts for the removal of dyes.

Applications of graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide in advanced dental materials and therapies

The graphene family of nanomaterials acquired significant attention in the field of dentistry due to a range of interesting properties. Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are the major graphene derivatives that are widely used in dental applications. These derivatives exhibit excellent mechanical properties, superior biocompatibility, good antibacterial properties, extreme chemical stability, and favorable tribological characteristics, thus representing highly materials for dentistry. The amphiphilic nature of GO allows covalent and noncovalent modifications that are favorable for biomedical applications. Graphene can influence the differentiation of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and enhance the properties of other biomaterials. Here, we review the dental applications of GO or rGO with regards to antimicrobial activity, therapeutic drug delivery, restorative dentistry, implants, pulp regeneration, bone regeneration, periodontal tissue regeneration, biosensors, and tooth whitening.

Advancing Mycotoxin Detection in Food and Feed: Novel Insights from Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS)

The implementation of low-cost and rapid technologies for the on-site detection of mycotoxin-contaminated crops is a promising solution to address the growing concerns of the agri-food industry. Recently, there have been significant developments in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for the direct detection of mycotoxins in food and feed. This review provides an overview of the most recent advancements in the utilization of SERS through the successful fabrication of novel nanostructured materials. Various bottom-up and top-down approaches have demonstrated their potential in improving sensitivity, while many applications exploit the immobilization of recognition elements and molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) to enhance specificity and reproducibility in complex matrices. Therefore, the design and fabrication of nanomaterials is of utmost importance and are presented herein. This paper uncovers that limited studies establish detection limits or conduct validation using naturally contaminated samples. One decade on, SERS is still lacking significant progress and there is a disconnect between the technology, the European regulatory limits, and the intended end-user. Ongoing challenges and potential solutions are discussed including nanofabrication, molecular binders, and data analytics. Recommendations to assay design, portability, and substrate stability are made to help improve the potential and feasibility of SERS for future on-site agri-food applications.

Graphene oxide as an emerging sole adsorbent and photocatalyst: Chemistry of synthesis and tailoring properties for removal of emerging contaminants

Contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) contain a wide range of compounds, such as pharmaceutical waste, pesticides, herbicides, industrial chemicals, organic dyes, etc. Their presence in the surrounding has extensive and multifaceted effects on human health as they have the potential to persist in the environment, accumulate in biota, and disrupt ecosystems. In this regard, various remediation methods involving different kind of functional nanomaterials with unique properties have been developed. The functional nanomaterials can provide several mechanisms for water pollutant removal, such as adsorption, catalysis, and disinfection, in a single platform. Graphene oxide (GO) is a two-dimensional carbon-based material that has an extremely large surface area and a large number of active sites. Recent advances in synthesising GO have shown great progress in tailoring its various physiochemical, optical, surface, structural properties etc., making it better adsorbent and photocatalysts. In this review, sole adsorbent and standalone photocatalytic performances of GO for the removal of CEC have been discussed in light of tailoring its adsorption and photocatalytic properties through novel synthesis routes and optimizing synthesis parameters. This review also examines various models describing the structure of GO and its surface/structural modifications for improved adsorption and photocatalytic properties. The article provides valuable information for the production of efficient and cost-effective GO-based sole adsorbents and photocatalysts as compared to the traditional materials. Furthermore, future prospective and challenges for sole GO nanostructures to compete with traditional adsorbents and photocatalysts have been discussed providing interesting avenues for future research.

Ni/WS2/WC Composite Nanosheets as an Efficient Catalyst for Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Peroxide Sensing and Hydrogen Evolution

It is highly attractive to develop a photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform based on a non-noble-metal nano array architecture. In this paper, a PEC hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) biosensor based on Ni/WS2/WC heterostructures was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal synthesis method and melamine carbonization process. The morphology, structural and composition and light absorption properties of the Ni/WS2/WC catalyst were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-visible spectrophotometer. The average size of the Ni/WS2/WC nanosheets was about 200 nm. Additionally, the electrochemical properties toward H2O2 were studied using an electrochemical workstation. Benefiting from the Ni and C atoms, the optimized Ni/WS2/WC catalyst showed superior H2O2 sensing performance and a large photocurrent response. It was found that the detection sensitivity of the Ni/WS2/WC catalyst was 25.7 μA/cm2/mM, and the detection limit was 0.3 mmol/L in the linear range of 1-10 mM. Simultaneously, the synthesized Ni/WS2/WC electrode displayed excellent electrocatalytic properties in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with a relatively small overpotential of 126 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 0.5 M H2SO4. This novel Ni/WS2/WC electrode may provide new insights into preparing other efficient hybrid photoelectrodes for PEC applications.

Graphene-Wrapped ZnO Nanocomposite with Enhanced Room-Temperature Photo-Activated Toluene Sensing Properties

Graphene-wrapped ZnO nanocomposites were fabricated by a simple solvothermal technology with a one-pot route. The structure and morphology of these as-fabricated samples were systematically characterized. The adding of graphene enhanced the content of the oxygen vacancy defect of the sample. All gas-sensing performances of sensors based on as-prepared samples were thoroughly studied. Sensors displayed an ultrahigh response and exceptional selectivity at room temperature under blue light irradiation. This excellent and enhanced toluene gas-sensing property was principally attributed to the synergistic impacts of the oxygen vacancy defect and the wrapped graphene in the composite sensor. The photo-activated graphene-wrapped ZnO sensor illustrated potential application in the practical detection of low concentrations of toluene under explosive environments.

Combined Thermomechanical Effect of Graphene Oxide and Montmorillonite on Biobased Epoxy Network Formation for Coatings

Epoxy nanocomposites derived from linseed oil, reinforced with graphene oxide (GO) and montmorillonite (MMT) nanostructures, were synthesized. The nanohybrids were developed by enriching the structure of MMT and GO with primary amines through a common and simplified method, which implies physical interactions promoted by ultrasonic processing energy. The influence of the new nanoreinforcing agents along with neat ones on the overall properties of the biobased epoxy materials for coating applications was assessed. Interface formation through surface compatibility was contained by the lower values of activation energy calculated from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curves, along with a consistent 70% increase in the cross-linking density when amine-modified MMT was used. Thermomechanical characteristics of the biobased epoxy nanocomposites were explained through the interaction of the functional groups over the curing process of epoxidized linseed oil (ELO), giving a 15 °C higher Tg value increase. Furthermore, the low surface energy values suggested an intrinsic antibacterial activity, as proved by a significant decrease of CFU against Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains on the 0.25% reinforced coatings.

Improved matrix purification using a graphene oxide-coated melamine sponge for UPLC-MS/MS-based determination of 37 veterinary drugs in milks

A rapid and highly sensitive method was established for the analysis of 37 veterinary drug residues in milk using a modified QuEChERS method based on a reduced graphene oxide-coated melamine sponge (rGO@MeS) coupled with UPLC-MS/MS. Under optimal chromatographic and mass spectrometric conditions, the effects of different dehydrated salts (MgSO4 and Na2SO4) and metal chelating agents (Na2EDTA) on extraction efficiency were first investigated. Next, the influence of a dynamic and static purification mode was evaluated in terms of drug recoveries. Calibration curves of 37 veterinary drugs were constructed in the range 0.6-500 μg kg-1, and good linearities were obtained with all determination coefficients (R2) ≥0.992. The limits of detection (LODs) and quantitation (LOQs) were in the range 0.3-1.1 μg kg-1 and 0.6-3.5 μg kg-1, respectively. The recoveries of all compounds were in the range 61.3-118.2% at three spiked levels (20, 100, and 200 μg kg-1) with RSDs ≤15.4% for both intra- and inter-day precisions. Compared to pristine melamine sponges and commercial adsorbents (C18, PSA, and GCB), rGO@MeS demonstrated an equal or even better purification performance in terms of recoveries, matrix effects, and matrix removal efficiency. This method is rapid, simple, efficient, and appropriate for the qualitative and quantitative analyses of 37 veterinary drug residues in milk, providing a new detection strategy and technical support for the routine analysis of animal-derived food.

Preparation, characterization, and adsorption kinetics of graphene oxide/chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose composites for the removal of environmentally relevant toxic metals

This study attempted to develop a low-cost and eco-friendly bio-based composite adsorbent that is highly efficient in capturing potential toxic metals. The bio-composite adsorbent was prepared using graphene oxide (GO), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CS); and characterized using FTIR, SEM-EDX and WAXD techniques. Metal-ion concentration in an aqueous solution was measured by ICP-OES. This article reveals that the adsorption of heavy metal ions varied according to the adsorbent quantity, initial metal concentration, pH, and interaction time. The metal ions' adsorption capacity (mg/g) was observed to increase when the interaction time and metal concentration increased. Conversely, metal ions adsorption was decreased with an increase in adsorbent dosages. The effect of pH on metal ions' adsorption was ion-specific. The substantial adsorption by GO/CMC/CS composite for Co2+, CrO42-, Mn2+ and Cd2+, had the respective values of 43.55, 77.70, 57.78, and 91.38 mg/g under acidic conditions. The metal ions experimental data were best fitted with pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetics, and Freundlich isotherm model (except Co2+). The separation factors (RL) value in the present investigation were found between 0 and 1, meaning that the metal ions adsorption onto GO/CS/CMC composite is favorable. The RL and sorption intensity (1/n) values fitted well to the adsorption isotherm.

The Influence of Reaction Conditions on the Properties of Graphene Oxide

The present study focuses on correlations between three parameters: (1) graphite particle size, (2) the ratio of graphite to oxidizing agent (KMnO4), and (3) the ratio of graphite to acid (H2SO4 and H3PO4), with the reaction yield, structure, and properties of graphene oxide (GO). The correlations are a challenge, as these three parameters can hardly be separated from each other due to the variations in the viscosity of the system. The larger the graphite particles, the higher the viscosity of GO. Decreasing the ratio of graphite to KMnO4 from 1:4 to 1:6 generally leads to a higher degree of oxidation and a higher reaction yield. However, the differences are very small. Increasing the graphite-to-acid-volume ratio from 1 g/60 mL to 1 g/80 mL, except for the smallest particles, reduced the degree of oxidation and slightly reduced the reaction yield. However, the reaction yield mainly depends on the extent of purification of GO by water, not on the reaction conditions. The large differences in the thermal decomposition of GO are mainly due to the bulk particle size and less to other parameters.

Graphene Oxide Nanoparticles and Organoids: A Prospective Advanced Model for Pancreatic Cancer Research

Pancreatic cancer, notorious for its grim 10% five-year survival rate, poses significant clinical challenges, largely due to late-stage diagnosis and limited therapeutic options. This review delves into the generation of organoids, including those derived from resected tissues, biopsies, pluripotent stem cells, and adult stem cells, as well as the advancements in 3D printing. It explores the complexities of the tumor microenvironment, emphasizing culture media, the integration of non-neoplastic cells, and angiogenesis. Additionally, the review examines the multifaceted properties of graphene oxide (GO), such as its mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical, and optical attributes, and their implications in cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. GO's unique properties facilitate its interaction with tumors, allowing targeted drug delivery and enhanced imaging for early detection and treatment. The integration of GO with 3D cultured organoid systems, particularly in pancreatic cancer research, is critically analyzed, highlighting current limitations and future potential. This innovative approach has the promise to transform personalized medicine, improve drug screening efficiency, and aid biomarker discovery in this aggressive disease. Through this review, we offer a balanced perspective on the advancements and future prospects in pancreatic cancer research, harnessing the potential of organoids and GO.

Chemical Method for Recovery and Regeneration of Graphene Oxide

Graphene oxide (GO) has been developed as a very effective medium for filtration and removal of microbial contaminants in fuel. GO is capable of filtering out microorganisms without needing micrometer and submicrometer pores for filtration. Our previous studies showed that microorganisms are attracted by GO and bind irreversibly to GO without promoting bacterial growth. Therefore, GO was tested as a filter medium to remove microorganisms in fuel. The characterization results showed that GO removed microbes in diesel fuel with >99% efficiency. However, the synthesis of GO using Hummers' method is labor intensive and a time-consuming. We present in this paper an economical, less labor intensive and a simple chemical approach to recover GO after it has been used as a filtration medium for the removal of microorganisms in fuels. In the GO recovery process, microbial and fuel contaminated GO is washed with hexane to remove any fuel from the GO sample. The hexane-washed GO is further washed with acetone and mixed with ethanol to kill and remove any microorganisms. After washing with ethanol, the GO sample is sonicated in water to remove impurities and re-establish the oxygen functionalities. The final recovered-GO (rec-GO) is obtained after removing water by rotary evaporation. The chemical characterization of rec-GO showed that rec-GO is similar in both chemical and physical properties compared to freshly synthesized-GO (as-syn-GO). Rec-GO was shown to perform similarly to as-syn-GO in filtration of biocontaminated fuel. We estimate that our rec-GO is at least 90% cheaper than high quality commercially available GO.

Materials Nanoarchitectonics at Dynamic Interfaces: Structure Formation and Functional Manipulation

The next step in nanotechnology is to establish a methodology to assemble new functional materials based on the knowledge of nanotechnology. This task is undertaken by nanoarchitectonics. In nanoarchitectonics, we architect functional material systems from nanounits such as atoms, molecules, and nanomaterials. In terms of the hierarchy of the structure and the harmonization of the function, the material created by nanoarchitectonics has similar characteristics to the organization of the functional structure in biosystems. Looking at actual biofunctional systems, dynamic properties and interfacial environments are key. In other words, nanoarchitectonics at dynamic interfaces is important for the production of bio-like highly functional materials systems. In this review paper, nanoarchitectonics at dynamic interfaces will be discussed, looking at recent typical examples. In particular, the basic topics of "molecular manipulation, arrangement, and assembly" and "material production" will be discussed in the first two sections. Then, in the following section, "fullerene assembly: from zero-dimensional unit to advanced materials", we will discuss how various functional structures can be created from the very basic nanounit, the fullerene. The above examples demonstrate the versatile possibilities of architectonics at dynamic interfaces. In the last section, these tendencies will be summarized, and future directions will be discussed.

Evaluation of physicochemical properties of graphene oxide-decellularized pericardium biohybrid scaffold

The decellularized pericardium has been widely used in cardiac tissue engineering, whereas its clinical applications are limited due to weak mechanical performance, high collagen exposure, and being prone to microbial contamination. In this study, a biohybrid scaffold of the decellularized caprine pericardium (DCP) and graphene oxide (GO) was fabricated by an immersion coating technique. The antimicrobial activity of GO was evaluated against Escherichia coli and showed minimum inhibitory concentration at 125 μg/mL and minimum bactericidal concentration at 250 μg/mL. The presence of GO on the surface of the biohybrid GO-DCP was confirmed through SEM analysis. The existence of glycosaminoglycan, elastin, and collagen in the DCP and GO-DCP was inferred from the FTIR spectra. The biocompatibility of GO-DCP was studied by seeding valvular interstitial cells, and the results show GO coating supports cell adhesion on the serous and fibrous sides of the DCP. Further, the biomechanical response of DCP is unaltered by the presence of GO. In conclusion, GO enhances the biological performance of decellularized pericardium, which can be used in cardiac tissue engineering applications.

Graphene Oxide Functionalized Gelatin Methacryloyl Microgel for Enhanced Biomimetic Mineralization and in situ Bone Repair

Introduction

The formation of bone-like apatite (Ap) on natural polymers through biomimetic mineralization using simulated body fluid (SBF) can improve osteoconductivity and biocompatibility, while lowering immunological rejection. Nonetheless, the coating efficiency of the bone-like Ap layer on natural polymers requires improvement. Carbonyls (-COOH) and hydroxyls (-OH) are abundant in graphene oxide (GO), which may offer more active sites for biomimetic mineralization and promote the proliferation of rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs).

Methods

In this study, gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) microgels were infused with GO (0, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg/mL) and embedded into microgels in SBF for 1, 7, and 14 days. Systematic in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to evaluate the structure of the microgel and its effect on cell proliferation and ability to repair bone defects in rats.

Results

The resulting GO-GelMA-Ap microgels displayed a porous, interconnected structure with uniformly coated surfaces in bone-like Ap, and the Ca/P ratio of the 1 mg/mL GO-GelMA-Ap group was comparable to that of natural bone tissue. Moreover, the 1 mg/mL GO-GelMA-Ap group exhibited a greater Ap abundance, enhanced proliferation of BMSCs in vitro and increased bone formation in vivo compared to the GelMA-Ap group.

Discussion

Overall, this study offers a novel method for incorporating GO into microgels for bone tissue engineering to promote biomimetic mineralization.

Graphene oxide nanoarchitectures in cancer therapy: Drug and gene delivery, phototherapy, immunotherapy, and vaccine development

The latest advancements in oncology involves the creation of multifunctional nanostructures. The integration of nanoparticles into the realm of cancer therapy has brought about a transformative shift, revolutionizing the approach to addressing existing challenges and limitations in tumor elimination. This is particularly crucial in combating the emergence of resistance, which has significantly undermined the effectiveness of treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. GO stands as a carbon-derived nanoparticle that is increasingly finding utility across diverse domains, notably in the realm of biomedicine. The utilization of GO nanostructures holds promise in the arena of oncology, enabling precise transportation of drugs and genetic material to targeted sites. GO nanomaterials offer the opportunity to enhance the pharmacokinetic behavior and bioavailability of drugs, with documented instances of these nanocarriers elevating drug accumulation at the tumor location. The GO nanostructures encapsulate genes, shielding them from degradation and facilitating their uptake within cancer cells, thereby promoting efficient gene silencing. The capability of GO to facilitate phototherapy has led to notable advancements in reducing tumor progression. By PDT and PTT combination, GO nanomaterials hold the capacity to diminish tumorigenesis. GO nanomaterials have the potential to trigger both cellular and innate immunity, making them promising contenders for vaccine development. Additionally, types of GO nanoparticles that respond to specific stimuli have been applied in cancer eradication, as well as for the purpose of cancer detection and biomarker diagnosis. Endocytosis serves as the mechanism through which GO nanomaterials are internalized. Given these advantages, the utilization of GO nanomaterials for tumor elimination comes highly recommended.

Dielectric constant enhancement of poly 4-vinylphenol (PVPh) via graphene flakes incorporation through electrospray atomization for energy storage

We report on the fabrication of hybrid composite poly 4-vinlyphenol (PVPh)/graphene thin film via cost-effective electrospray atomization deposition technique. Thin films fabricated through manipulating deposition technique in two different ways which are blending and layer by layer (LBL). For investigation of PVPh/graphene hybrid composite dielectric behavior in comparison to PVPh; three asymmetric MIS thin film capacitors were fabricated, where dielectric thin films (i) PVPh and (ii & iii) hybrid composite thin films PVPh/graphene (blended and LBL) were sandwiched between electrodes i.e. indium tin oxide (ITO) and p-type semiconductor poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). The dielectric properties of the thin films were characterized for frequencies 1 to 100 kHz while utilizing the MIS thin film capacitors. The capacitance obtained at 1 kHz frequency for PVPh/graphene (LBL) dielectric layer at the voltage range ±10 volts was 8.5 mF cm-2 while for blended PVPh/graphene thin film the capacitance at the voltage range ±3 volts was 0.40 μF cm-2 and for pristine PVPh as dielectric layer the capacitance at voltage range ±1 volts was 1.45 μF cm-2. Similarly, even at higher frequencies up to 100 kHz, the PVPh/graphene (LBL) showed stable behavior. Thus, the composite PVPh/graphene (LBL) thin film has a better dielectric nature compared to the composite PVPh/graphene (blended) thin film, even at higher frequencies with larger operational voltage window. This distinguishing nature of the composite PVP/graphene (LBL) is attributed to increase in dielectric constant due to graphene flakes in between PVPh. For the thin films LBL and blended PVPh/graphene, the calculated dielectric constant at 10 kHz is 6.7 and 0.023 while at 100 kHz it is 2 and 0.0167, respectively.

CdTe QD-decorated GO nanosheet heterojunction for efficient photocurrent generation and photocatalytic activity

Cadmium telluride quantum dot (CdTe QD)-decorated graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets are promising heterojunctions for the environmental remediation of organic pollutants in water. However, assembling these two materials is a challenge. For this purpose, we have developed a one-step approach for the decoration of QDs onto the surface of GO nanosheets/intercalation of QDs into GO nanosheets through self-assembly, resulting in the formation of sandwiched hybrid heterojunctions. After synthesis, the samples were analysed for variations in their structural, morphological, compositional, optical and photoelectrochemical characteristics using various analytical tools. Interlinking QDs and GO nanosheets enhanced the photocurrent generation (∼5.8 μA cm-2), resulting in faster electron transfer by delaying the decay time (58.25 ms). A higher rate constant value (k = 0.135 min-1) was obtained for degrading 93% MB dye in 20 min. This work demonstrates a cost-effective strategy for constructing CdTe QDs/GO nanosheet hybrid heterojunctions for potential application in the field of photocatalysis.

Effective reinforcement of plasticized starch by the incorporation of graphene, graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide

Plasticized starch (PLS) nanocomposite films using glycerol and reinforced with graphene (G) and graphene oxide (GO) were prepared by solvent casting procedure. On one hand, the influence of adding different G contents into the PLS matrix was analyzed. In order to improve the stability of G nanoflakes in water, Salvia extracts were added as surfactants. The resulting nanocomposites presented improved mechanical properties. A maximum increase of 287 % in Young's modulus and 57 % in tensile strength was achieved for nanocomposites with 5 wt% of G. However, it seemed that Salvia acted as co-plasticizer for the PLS. Moreover, the addition of the highest G content led to an improvement of the electrical conductivity close to 5 × 10-6 S/m compared to the matrix. On the other hand, GO was also incorporated as nanofiller to prepare nanocomposites. Thus, the effect of increasing the GO content in the final behavior of the PLS nanocomposites was evaluated. The characterization of GO containing PLS nanocomposites showed that strong starch/GO interactions and a good dispersion of the nanofiller were achieved. Moreover, the acidic treatment applied for the reduction of the GO was found to be effective, since the electrical conductivity was 150 times bigger than its G containing counterpart.

Graphene Oxide Nanostructures as Nanoplatforms for Delivering Natural Therapeutic Agents: Applications in Cancer Treatment, Bacterial Infections, and Bone Regeneration Medicine

Graphene, fullerenes, diamond, carbon nanotubes, and carbon dots are just a few of the carbon-based nanomaterials that have gained enormous popularity in a variety of scientific disciplines and industrial uses. As a two-dimensional material in the creation of therapeutic delivery systems for many illnesses, nanosized graphene oxide (NGO) is now garnering a large amount of attention among these materials. In addition to other benefits, NGO functions as a drug nanocarrier with remarkable biocompatibility, high pharmaceutical loading capacity, controlled drug release capability, biological imaging efficiency, multifunctional nanoplatform properties, and the power to increase the therapeutic efficacy of loaded agents. Thus, NGO is a perfect nanoplatform for the development of drug delivery systems (DDSs) to both detect and treat a variety of ailments. This review article's main focus is on investigating surface functionality, drug-loading methods, and drug release patterns designed particularly for smart delivery systems. The paper also examines the relevance of using NGOs to build DDSs and considers prospective uses in the treatment of diseases including cancer, infection by bacteria, and bone regeneration medicine. These factors cover the use of naturally occurring medicinal substances produced from plant-based sources.

Multi-functional conductive hydrogels based on heparin-polydopamine complex reduced graphene oxide for epidermal sensing and chronic wound healing

Flexible hydrogel sensors have expanded the applications of electronic devices due to their suitable mechanical properties and excellent biocompatibility. However, conventionally synthesized reduced graphene oxide (rGO) encounters limitations in reduction degree and dispersion, restricting the conductivity of graphene hydrogels and impeding the development of high-sensitivity flexible sensors. Moreover, hydrogels are susceptible to inflammation and bacterial infections, jeopardizing sensor stability over time. Thus, the challenge persists in designing conductive hydrogels that encompass high sensitivity, antibacterial efficacy, and anti-oxidative capabilities. In this study, GO was modified and reduced via a heparin-polydopamine (Hep-PDA) complex, yielding well-reduced and uniformly dispersed Hep-PDA-rGO nanosheets. Consequently, a hydrogel utilizing Hep-PDA-rGO was synthesized, showcasing commendable conductivity (3.63 S/m) and sensor performance, effectively applied in real-time motion monitoring. Notably, the hydrogel's attributes extend to facilitating chronic diabetic wound healing. It maintained a suitable inflammatory environment credited to its potent antibacterial and antioxidative properties, while its inherent conductivity promoted angiogenesis. The multifunctional nature of this hydrogel highlight its potential not only as an epidermal sensor but also as a promising dressing candidate for chronic wound treatment.

Graphene derivatives-based electrodes for the electrochemical determination of carbamate pesticides in food products: A review

Graphene (GR) composites have great potential for the determination of carbamates pesticides (CPs) by electrochemical methods. Since the beginning of the 20th century, GR has shown remarkable promise as electrode material for various sensors. The contamination of food products with harmful CPs is a major problem as they do not always damage human health immediately, but can be harmful after prolonged exposure. A range of advantages can be gained from their electrochemical determination, such as high sensitivity, reasonably selectivity, rapid detection, low limit of detection, and easy electrode fabrication. Furthermore, these electrochemical techniques are robust, reproducible, user-friendly, and conform to both "green" and "white" analytical chemistry. This review is focused on results published in the last ten years in the field of electrochemical determination of CPs in food products using GR and its derivatives.

Can Graphene Pave the Way to Successful Periodontal and Dental Prosthetic Treatments? A Narrative Review

Graphene, as a promising material, holds the potential to significantly enhance the field of dental practices. Incorporating graphene into dental materials imparts enhanced strength and durability, while graphene-based nanocomposites offer the prospect of innovative solutions such as antimicrobial dental implants or scaffolds. Ongoing research into graphene-based dental adhesives and composites also suggests their capacity to improve the quality and reliability of dental restorations. This narrative review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the application of graphene derivatives in the dental domain, with a particular focus on their application in prosthodontics and periodontics. It is important to acknowledge that further research and development are imperative to fully explore the potential of graphene and ensure its safe use in dental practices.

ZnO QDs/GO/g-C3N4 Preparation and Photocatalytic Properties of Composites

Using an ultrasound-assisted chemical technique, ZnO quantum dot and ZnO composites were created. The optical characteristics and structural details of these composites were examined using TEM, XRD, XPS, FT-IR, UV-vis, and BET. The results revealed that both the ZnO quantum dot composite and ZnO composite exhibited outstanding optical properties, making them suitable for photocatalytic reactions. In order to analyze the photocatalytic performance, a degradation experiment was conducted using Rhodamine B solution as the simulation dye wastewater. The experiment demonstrated that the degradation of Rhodamine B followed the first-order reaction kinetics equation when combined with the photocatalytic reaction kinetics. Moreover, through cyclic stability testing, it was determined that the ZnO QDs-GO-g-C3N4 composite sample showed good stability and could be reused. The degradation rates of Rhodamine B solution using ZnO-GO-g-C3N4 and ZnO QDs-GO-g-C3N4 reached 95.25% and 97.16%, respectively. Furthermore, free-radical-trapping experiments confirmed that ·O2- was the main active species in the catalytic system and its photocatalytic mechanism was elucidated. The photocatalytic oxidation of ZnO quantum dots in this study has important reference value and provides a new idea for the subsequent research.

Preparation and characterization of silanized graphene oxide based polyacrylate composites in situ copolymerization

In the present work, graphene oxide (GO) was initially prepared by the modified Hummers' method and then surface modification with 3-Methacryloxypropyltrimeth- oxysilane (MPS) was carried out. The silanized GO based polyacrylate (PA) composite emulsion was fabricated via in situ copolymerization. The covalent bonds formed between GO and PA matrix were proposed to improve the dispersion of MPS-GO in composites. FTIR spectra, Raman spectra, XPS and XRD data confirmed that oxidation and modification were occurred, and oxygen-containing functional groups and CC groups were introduced on the side of GO, respectively. Two kinds of structures were observed in composite latexes, and the average diameter of composite latexes (107 nm) was larger than that of PA latexes (87 nm). FTIR spectra also disclosed that reactive MPS-GO had already successfully copolymerized with the PA matrix. AFM images demonstrated that wrinkled GO nanosheets were homogeneously dispersed and incorporated into the PA matrix. The water contact angle (WCA) was found increasing as the addition of MPS-GO, although the composite films exhibited obvious hydrophilicity with increasing the content of MPS-GO.

Dynamics of reduced graphene oxide: synthesis and structural models

Technological advancements are leading to an upsurge in demand for functional materials that satisfy several of humankind's needs. In addition to this, the current global drive is to develop materials with high efficacy in intended applications whilst practising green chemistry principles to ensure sustainability. Carbon-based materials, such as reduced graphene oxide (RGO), in particular, can possibly meet this criterion because they can be derived from waste biomass (a renewable material), possibly synthesised at low temperatures without the use of hazardous chemicals, and are biodegradable (owing to their organic nature), among other characteristics. Additionally, RGO as a carbon-based material is gaining momentum in several applications due to its lightweight, nontoxicity, excellent flexibility, tuneable band gap (from reduction), higher electrical conductivity (relative to graphene oxide, GO), low cost (owing to the natural abundance of carbon), and potentially facile and scalable synthesis protocols. Despite these attributes, the possible structures of RGO are still numerous with notable critical variations and the synthesis procedures have been dynamic. Herein, we summarize the highlights from the historical breakthroughs in understanding the structure of RGO (from the perspective of GO) and the recent state-of-the-art synthesis protocols, covering the period from 2020 to 2023. These are key aspects in the realisation of the full potential of RGO materials through the tailoring of physicochemical properties and reproducibility. The reviewed work highlights the merits and prospects of the physicochemical properties of RGO toward achieving sustainable, environmentally friendly, low-cost, and high-performing materials at a large scale for use in functional devices/processes to pave the way for commercialisation. This can drive the sustainability and commercial viability aspects of RGO as a material.

Graphene oxide worsens copper-mediated embryo-larval toxicity in the pacific oyster while reduced graphene oxide mitigates the effects

Due to their properties, graphene-based nanomaterials (GBMs) are triggering a great interest leading to an increase of their global production and use in new applications. As a consequence, their release into the environment is expected to increase in the next years. When considering the current knowledge in the evaluation of GBMs ecotoxic potential, studies aiming to evaluate the hazard associated to these nanomaterials towards marine species and particularly considering potential interactions with other environmental pollutants such as metals are scarce. Here we evaluated the embryotoxic potential of GBMs, which include graphene oxide (GO) and its reduced form (rGO), both individually and in combination with copper (Cu) as a referent toxicant, towards early life stages of the Pacific oyster through the use of a standardized method (NF ISO 17244). We found that following exposure to Cu, dose-dependent decrease in the proportion of normal larvae was recorded with an Effective Concentration leading to the occurrence of 50% of abnormal larvae (EC₅₀) of 13.85 ± 1.21 μg/L. Interestingly, the presence of GO at a non-toxic dose of 0.1 mg/L decreased the Cu EC₅₀ to 12.04 ± 0.85 μg/L while it increased to 15.91 ± 1.57 μg/L in presence of rGO. Based on the measurement of copper adsorption, the obtained results suggest that GO enhances Cu bioavailability, potentially modifying its toxic pathways, while rGO mitigates Cu toxicity by decreasing its bioavailability. This research underscores the need to characterize the risk associated to GBMs interactions with other aquatic contaminants and supports the adoption of a safer-by-design strategy using rGO in marine environments. This would contribute to minimize the potential adverse effects on aquatic species and to reduce the risk for economic activities associated to coastal environments.

Ultrasonication-Tailored Graphene Oxide of Varying Sizes in Multiple-Equilibrium-Route-Enhanced Adsorption for Aqueous Removal of Acridine Orange

Graphene oxide (GO) has shown remarkable performance in the multiple-equilibrium-route adsorption (MER) process, which is characterized by further activation of GO through an in-situ reduction process based on single-equilibrium-route adsorption (SER), generating new adsorption sites and achieving an adsorption capacity increase. However, the effect of GO on MER adsorption in lateral size and thickness is still unclear. Here, GO sheets were sonicated for different lengths of time, and the adsorption of MER and SER was investigated at three temperatures to remove the typical cationic dye, acridine orange (AO). After sonication, we found that freshly prepared GO was greatly reduced in lateral size and thickness. In about 30 min, the thickness of GO decreased dramatically from several atomic layers to fewer atomic layers to a single atomic layer, which was completely stripped off; after that, the monolayer lateral size reduction dominated until it remained constant. Surface functional sites, such as hydroxyl groups, showed little change in the experiments. However, GO mainly reduces the C=O and C-O bonds in MER, except for the conjugated carbon backbone (C-C). The SER adsorption kinetics of all temperatures fitted the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, yet room temperature preferred the latter. An overall adsorption enhancement appeared as sonication time, but the equilibrium capacity of SER GO generally increased with thickness and decreased with the single-layer lateral size, while MER GO conversed concerning the thickness. The escalated temperature facilitated the exfoliation of GO regarding the adsorption mechanism. Thus, the isotherm behaviors of the SER GO changed from the Freundlich model to Langmuir as size and temperature changed, while the MER GO were all of the Freundlich. A record capacity of ~4.3 g of AO per gram of GO was obtained from the MER adsorption with a sixty-minute ultrasonicated GO at 313.15 K. This work promises a cornerstone for MER adsorption with GO as an adsorbent.

Fabrication of poly (styrene-acrylate)/silver nanoparticle-graphene oxide composite antibacterial by in situ Pickering emulsion polymerization

Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were easily synthesized by chemical reduction, and the prepared nanocomposite was then used as a stabilizer in the Pickering emulsion polymerization of poly (styrene-acrylate) to prepare PSA/AgNPs-GO composites. The AgNPs-GO nanocomposites were fully characterized by TEM, FTIR, Raman, SEM and XPS, which demonstrated that about 5-30 nm AgNPs with spherical, octahedral and cubic structures were decorated on the surface of wrinkled GO nanosheets. TEM photos and EDS spectrum of composites showed that the transparent GO nanosheets decorated with AgNPs were covered on the surface of PSA latexes and the AgNPs were uniformly dispersed on the surface of the PSA latexes without aggregation. The average diameter of composite latexes was obviously bigger than that of PSA latexes. However, the role of surfactant and the properties of hydrophilicity decreased the average diameter and WCA of composites while increasing the additions of AgNPs-GO nanocomposites. AFM images disclosed that wrinkled GO nanosheets decorated with AgNPs dispersed on the surface of composite films. XPS data proved clearly that silver was present only in metallic form and migration occurred during film-formation. TGA curves confirmed the composite film displayed better thermal stability than that of PSA. The results of antibacterial activity revealed that composite films had exhibited antibacterial properties against both E. coli and S. aureus, and the latter showed better antibacterial efficacy than the former. The nano-silver polyacrylate coatings with antibacterial activity explored in current work have wide application in the fields of wood coatings, leather finishing, and so on.

Green Methods for the Fabrication of Graphene Oxide Membranes: From Graphite to Membranes

Graphene oxide (GO) has shown great potential as a membrane material due to its unique properties, including high mechanical strength, excellent thermal stability, versatility, tunability, and outperforming molecular sieving capabilities. GO membranes can be used in a wide range of applications, such as water treatment, gas separation, and biological applications. However, the large-scale production of GO membranes currently relies on energy-intensive chemical methods that use hazardous chemicals, leading to safety and environmental concerns. Therefore, more sustainable and greener approaches to GO membrane production are needed. In this review, several strategies proposed so far are analyzed, including a discussion on the use of eco-friendly solvents, green reducing agents, and alternative fabrication techniques, both for the preparation of the GO powders and their assembly in membrane form. The characteristics of these approaches aiming to reduce the environmental impact of GO membrane production while maintaining the performance, functionality, and scalability of the membrane are evaluated. In this context, the purpose of this work is to shed light on green and sustainable routes for GO membranes' production. Indeed, the development of green approaches for GO membrane production is crucial to ensure its sustainability and promote its widespread use in various industrial application fields.

Green and Sustainable Ultrasound-Assisted Anodic Electrochemical Preparation of Graphene Oxide Dispersions and Their Antioxidant Properties

A fast method for preparing aqueous graphene oxide (GO) dispersions by electrochemical oxidation of a graphite anode without preliminary intercalation with oxidizing agents is proposed. Ultrasonic probing was used in the modulation mode of ultrasonic waves (work/rest) for more efficient graphite oxidation-exfoliation. It is shown that the 4/2 s mode of ultrasonic modulation is the most effective due to the probe material's low corrosion while maintaining the optimum synthesis temperature not exceeding 30-35 °C and achieving the best characteristics of the resulting product. Three cases of anodic oxidation of graphite to obtain graphene oxide were considered: (1) a combined cathode-anode compartment, (2) a split cathode-anode salt-bridged compartment, and (3) separated anode compartment with a 3.5 kDa dialysis membrane. It was determined that the approach to synthesis with a divided cathode-anode compartment makes it possible to obtain GO sheets with fewer defects compared to chemical methods or methods with a combined cathode-anode compartment and makes it possible to control the oxidation degree of the material (C:O ratio) by varying the current density. The prepared samples showed good stability for more than six months. The spectral and morphological characteristics were studied. Using chemiluminometry in the luminol/Co(II)/H₂O₂ system, the antioxidant properties concerning three key reactive oxygen species (H₂O₂, superoxide anion radical, and hydroxyl radical) were demonstrated. It was also shown that the prepared GO dispersions do not induce lipid and phospholipid peroxidation.

Fluorescence Properties of ZnOQDs-GO-g-C3N4 Nanocomposites

In this paper, the fluorescence properties of ZnOQD-GO-g-C₃N₄ composite materials (ZCGQDs) were studied. Firstly, the addition of a silane coupling agent (APTES) in the synthesis process was explored, and it was found that the addition of 0.04 g·mL^-1 APTES had the largest relative fluorescence intensity and the highest quenching efficiency. The selectivity of ZCGQDs for metal ions was also investigated, and it was found that ZCGQDs showed good selectivity for Cu²⁺. ZCGQDs were optimally mixed with Cu²⁺ for 15 min. ZCGQDs also had good anti-interference capability toward Cu²⁺. There was a linear relationship between the concentration of Cu²⁺ and the fluorescence intensity of ZCGQDs in the range of 1~100 µM. The regression equation was found to be F₀/F = 0.9687 + 0.12343C. The detection limit of Cu²⁺ was about 1.74 μM. The quenching mechanism was also analyzed.

Advances in two-dimensional engineered nanomaterials applications for the agro- and food-industries

Two-dimensional nanomaterials, such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, MXenes, and other layered compounds, are the subject of intense theoretical and experimental research for applications in a wide range of advanced technological solutions, given their outstanding physical, chemical, and mechanical properties. In the context of food science and technology, their contributions are starting to appear, based on the advantages that two-dimensional nanostructures offer to agricultural- and food-related key topics, such as sustainable water use, nano-agrochemicals, novel nanosensing devices, and smart packaging technologies. These application categories facilitate the grasping of the current and potential uses of such advanced nanomaterials in the field, backed by their advantageous physical, chemical, and structural properties. Developments for water cleaning and reuse, efficient nanofertilizers and pesticides, ultrasensitive sensors for food contamination, and intelligent nanoelectronic disposable food packages are among the most promising application examples reviewed here and demonstrate the tremendous impact that further developments would have in the area as the fundamental and applied research of two-dimensional nanostructures continues. We expect this work will contribute to a better understanding of the promising characteristics of two-dimensional nanomaterials that could be used for the design of novel and feasible solutions in the agriculture and food areas. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Graphene-based materials for effective adsorption of organic and inorganic pollutants: A critical and comprehensive review

Water scarcity has been felt in many countries and will become a critical issue in the coming years. The release of toxic organic and inorganic contaminants from different anthropogenic activities, like mining, agriculture, industries, and domestic households, enters the natural waterbody and pollutes them. Keeping this in view in combating the environmental crises, removing pollutants from wastewater is one of the ongoing environmental challenges. Adsorption technology is an economical, fast, and efficient physicochemical method for removing both organic and inorganic pollutants, even at low concentrations. In the last decade, graphene and its composite materials have become the center of attraction for numerous applications, including wastewater treatment, due to the large surface area, highly active surface, and exclusive physicochemical properties, which make them potential adsorbents with unique physicochemical properties, like low density, chemical strength, structural variability, and the possibility of large-scale fabrications. This review article provides a thorough summary/critical appraisal of the published literature on graphene-, GO-, and rGO-based adsorbents for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater. The synthesis methods, experimental parameters, adsorption behaviors, isotherms, kinetics, thermodynamics, mechanisms, and the performance of the regeneration-desorption processes of these substances are scrutinized. Finally, the research challenges, limitations, and future research studies are also discussed. Certainly, this review article will benefit the research community by getting substantial information on suitable techniques for synthesizing such adsorbents and utilizing them in water treatment and designing water treatment systems.

Noble Metals Functionalized on Graphene Oxide Obtained by Different Methods-New Catalytic Materials

In recent years, research has focused on developing materials exhibiting outstanding mechanical, electrical, thermal, catalytic, magnetic and optical properties such as graphene/polymer, graphene/metal nanoparticles and graphene/ceramic nanocomposites. Two-dimensional sp² hybridized graphene has become a material of choice in research due to the excellent properties it displays electrically, thermally, optically and mechanically. Noble nanomaterials also present special physical and chemical properties and, therefore, they provide model building blocks in modifying nanoscale structures for various applications, ranging from nanomedicine to catalysis and optics. The introduction of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) (Au, Ag and Pd) into chemically derived graphene is important in opening new avenues for both materials in different fields where they can provide hybrid materials with exceptional performance due to the synergistical result of the specific properties of each of the materials. This review presents the different synthetic procedures for preparing Pt, Ag, Pd and Au NP/graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites.

Recyclable GO-Arginine Hybrids for CO2 Fixation into Cyclic Carbonates

New covalently modified GO-guanidine materials have been realized in a gram-scale synthesis and purified by an innovative microfiltration. The use of these composites in the fixation of CO₂ into cyclic carbonates is demonstrated. Mild operating conditions, high yields (up to 85 %), wide scope (15 examples) and recoverability/reusability (up to 5 cycles) of the material account for the efficiency of the protocol. Dedicated control experiments shed light on the activation modes exerted by GO-l-arginine during the ring-opening/closing synthetic sequence.
