Abstract
Context COVID-19 has substantial effects on respiratory health and overall well-being. Recent studies suggest vitamin D as a potential treatment, but the results are inconclusive. Objective The authors conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to examine the link between vitamin D and patients with COVID-19. Data sources The authors searched electronic databases PubMed, Cochrane, CINAHL, EMBASE and Google Scholar from their inception till August 2023. Study selection Inclusion criteria used in our systematic review include: (1) patients who tested positive for COVID-19, (2) intervention was vitamin D supplementation, (3) the comparator was either a placebo, standard care of treatment, or, no treatment, (4) at least one of the clinical outcomes of interest were investigated, (5) study design being RCTs. Data extraction Two independent reviewers manually extracted information from selected articles, including study characteristics, patient characteristics, and the primary outcomes: all-cause mortality, ICU and hospital stay length and secondary outcomes: mechanical ventilation, supplemental oxygen, ICU admission, and adverse events. Risk ratios or mean differences and 95% CIs were calculated using a random-effects model. Data synthesis The authors' analysis included 14 RCTs with 2165 patients. Vitamin D significantly reduced ICU admissions and lowered the need for mechanical ventilation compared to placebo. However, it did not significantly affect hospital stay length, ICU stay length, mechanical ventilation duration, mortality, or the need for supplemental oxygen. Conclusion Vitamin D does not significantly improve certain clinical outcomes, such as hospital and ICU stay length, for patients with COVID-19. However, it still may be significantly beneficial in decreasing the burden on intensive care services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND COPD is a common, preventable and treatable airway disease, and is currently the third leading cause of death worldwide. About one billion people worldwide are estimated to have vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency. Vitamin D deficiency is common among people with COPD, and has been reported to be associated with reduced lung function and increased risk of acute exacerbations of COPD. Several clinical trials of vitamin D to prevent acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) and improve COPD control have been conducted, but an up-to-date meta-analysis of all double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trials of this intervention is lacking. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of vitamin D for the management of acute exacerbations and symptoms for people with COPD. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Airways Trials Register and reference lists of articles. We also searched trial registries directly, and contacted the authors of studies in order to identify additional trials. The date of the last search was 24 August 2022. SELECTION CRITERIA We included double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trials of vitamin D or its hydroxylated metabolites, for adults with a clinical diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease based on the presence of characteristic symptoms and irreversible airflow obstruction. We did not impose restrictions regarding disease severity or baseline vitamin D status, in order to maximise generalisability. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS We used standard Cochrane methods. The primary outcome was the rate of moderate or severe exacerbations (requiring systemic corticosteroids, antibiotics or both). We also performed subgroup analyses to determine whether the effect of vitamin D on the rate of moderate or severe exacerbations was modified by baseline vitamin D status, COPD severity or regular inhaled corticosteroid use. The main secondary outcomes of interest were the proportion of participants experiencing one or more exacerbations (moderate or severe), the change in forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1, % predicted) and the proportion of participants with one or more serious adverse events of any cause, mortality (all-cause) and quality of life. We used GRADE to assess the certainty of evidence for each outcome. MAIN RESULTS We included 10 double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trials in this review, involving a total of 1372 adults. Five studies contributed to the primary outcome analysis of the rate of moderate or severe exacerbations requiring systemic corticosteroids, antibiotics or both. The duration of studies ranged from six weeks to 40 months, and all investigated the effects of administering cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). One study included two intervention arms, one where vitamin D3 was given and one where calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D) was given. The majority of participants had mild to moderate COPD, and profound vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) < 25 nmol/L) at baseline was rare (123 participants contributing data to subgroup analysis). Administration of vitamin D or its hydroxylated metabolites results in little to no change in the overall rate of exacerbations requiring systemic corticosteroids, antibiotics or both (rate ratio (RR) 0.98, 95% CI 0.86 to 1.11; 5 studies, 980 participants; high-certainty evidence). Vitamin D supplementation did not influence any meta-analysed secondary outcomes. These were all based on moderate- or high-certainty evidence aside from adverse events and quality of life, which were based on low-certainty evidence. We observed little to no change in the proportion of participants experiencing one or more moderate or severe exacerbations (odds ratio (OR) 0.94, 95% CI 0.72 to 1.24; 5 studies, 980 participants; high-certainty evidence). Additionally, vitamin D probably results in little to no difference in the inter-arm mean change in FEV1 (% predicted) (mean difference 2.82 higher in intervention arm, 95% CI -2.42 to 8.06; 7 studies, 1063 participants; moderate-certainty evidence). There was also probably no effect of vitamin D on the incidence of serious adverse events due to any cause; although we identified an anticipated absolute effect of 36 additional adverse events per 1000 people, the confidence interval included the null hypothesis of no effect (OR 1.19, 95% CI 0.82 to 1.71; 5 studies, 663 participants; moderate-certainty evidence). Vitamin D may have little to no effect on mortality (OR 1.13, 95% CI 0.57 to 2.21; 6 studies, 1019 participants; low-certainty evidence). It also may have little to no effect on quality of life as measured by validated instruments (narrative findings; 5 studies, 663 participants; low-certainty evidence). We assessed one study as being at high risk of bias in at least one domain; this did not contribute data to the meta-analysis of the primary outcome reported above. Sensitivity analysis that excluded this study from the meta-analysed outcome to which it contributed, the inter-arm mean change in FEV1, did not change the findings. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS We found that administration of vitamin D results in little to no effect on the rate of moderate or severe exacerbations requiring systemic corticosteroids, antibiotics or both or the proportion of participants experiencing one or more exacerbations (moderate or severe) (both high-certainty evidence). Further, vitamin D probably has no effect on the inter-arm difference in change in lung volumes and the proportion of participants with one or more serious adverse event of any cause (both moderate-certainty evidence), and may make little to no difference to mortality or quality of life (both low-certainty evidence). We recommend further research on the balance of benefits and harms of vitamin D supplements in COPD for those with very low or very high starting vitamin D levels, because we assessed the available evidence as low-certainty for these groups.

Abstract
Vitamin D is a steroid hormone that is naturally produced in the body or obtained through dietary sources, primarily under the influence of UVB radiation. This essential nutrient has a vital role in numerous physiological processes, encompassing immune function, cell growth, differentiation, insulin regulation, and cardiovascular well-being, along with its pivotal role in sustaining the delicate equilibrium of calcium and phosphate concentrations in the body. Moreover, vitamin D reinforces mucosal defense and bolsters the immune system through immunomodulation, making it a critical component of overall health. Numerous studies have unveiled the profound connection between vitamin D and the predisposition to respiratory tract infections, including well-known viruses such as influenza and the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Vitamin D deficiency has been consistently linked to increased severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and a heightened risk of mortality among afflicted individuals. Retrospective observational studies have further substantiated these findings, indicating that levels of vitamin D are linked with both the occurrence and severity of COVID-19 cases. Vitamin D has its influence on viral infections through a multitude of mechanisms, such as promoting the release of antimicrobial peptides and fine-tuning the responses of the immune system. Additionally, vitamin D is intertwined with the intricate network of the renin-angiotensin system, suggesting a potential impact on the development of complications related to COVID-19. While further clinical trials and extensive research are warranted, the existing body of evidence strongly hints at the possible use of vitamin D as a valuable tool in the prophylaxis and management of COVID-19 and other viral infectious diseases.

Abstract
Consequences of the disease produced by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have led to an urgent search for preventive and therapeutic strategies. Besides drug treatments, proposals have been made for supplementation with biomolecules possessing immunomodulatory and antioxidant properties. The objective of this study was to review published evidence on the clinical usefulness of supplementation with vitamin D, antioxidant vitamins (vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin C), melatonin, lactoferrin and natural products found in food (curcumin, luteolin, ginger, allicin, magnesium and zinc) as supplements in SARS-CoV-2 infection. In general, supplementation of conventional treatments with these biomolecules has been found to improve the clinical symptoms and severity of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), with some indications of a preventive effect. In conclusion, these compounds may assist in preventing and/or improving the symptoms of COVID-19. Nevertheless, only limited evidence is available, and findings have been inconsistent. Further investigations are needed to verify the therapeutic potential of these supplements.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D supplementation may lower the risk of acute respiratory infection (ARI), and the effects may be mediated through the induction of cathelicidin production. Objective To study the effect of vitamin D supplementation on ARI and cathelicidin concentration in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) and to study the associations between baseline serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and ARIs and cathelicidin concentrations in a 14-week follow-up study. Methods In the RCT study, the participants were randomized into 2 groups to receive either 20 µg of vitamin D3 or an identical placebo daily. Blood samples were obtained 3 times, at the beginning (study week 0), mid-term (study week 6), and at the end of the study period (study week 14). The follow-up study had 412 voluntary young men from 2 different locations and seasons (January and July). The primary outcomes were the number of ARIs diagnosed and the number of days off because of ARI. Results In the RCT, vitamin D supplementation had no effect on ARI or days off because of ARI. However, regardless of the group, vitamin D insufficiency (<50 nmol/L) was associated with increased ARI. In the 14-week follow-up study, insufficient serum 25(OH)D at baseline was also associated with increased risk of ARI (odds ratio [OR], 2.1; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.2-3.7) and also days-off duty (OR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.3-4.0) and was inversely associated with cathelicidin concentration (OR, 0.49; 95% CI, .24-.99). Conclusions Sufficient serum 25(OH)D may be preventive against acute respiratory infection and the preventive effect could be mediated through the induction of cathelicidin production. Abstract
Many older patients with COVID-19 likely have co-morbid osteoporosis. We investigated the clinical outcomes of COVID-19 patients with osteoporosis. This was a retrospective cohort study using national claims data from Korea encoded in the common data model. Patients aged ≥ 50 years diagnosed with COVID-19 infection between January 2020 and April 2022 were included and stratified into two groups according to a history of osteoporosis. Clinical outcomes of COVID-19 infection were analyzed using logistic regression analysis after large-scale propensity score stratification. Of the 597,011 patients with COVID-19 included in the study, 105,172 had a history of osteoporosis. In patients with a history of osteoporosis, the odds of mortality decreased (odds ratio [OR] 0.82, P < 0.002), whereas most clinical outcomes of COVID-19 did not exhibit differences compared to those without such a history. Osteoporosis patients with a history of fractures showed increased odds of pneumonia, hospitalization, major adverse cardiac events, venous thromboembolism, and mortality, compared to patients without osteoporosis (ORs 1.34-1.58, P < 0.001 to P = 0.001). Our study suggests that patients with severe osteoporosis who have experienced fractures have an elevated risk of severe complications with COVID-19, while osteoporosis patients without fractures who have sought medical attention have a lower risk of mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence on the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and depressive symptoms is inconclusive. OBJECTIVES The primary aim of the study was to investigate the association between SNPs in the VDR gene and depressive symptoms. METHODS In a sample of older adults from the Longitudinal Ageing Study Amsterdam (n = 922), depressive symptoms were assessed using the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale (CES-D scale) at baseline and after 3, 6, and 10 y of follow-up. Blood samples for SNP and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) determination were obtained at baseline. The association between 13 SNPs in the VDR gene and the course of depressive symptoms were evaluated using linear mixed models. The interaction between SNPs and serum 25(OH)D3 in relation to depressive symptoms was evaluated using multiple linear regression. RESULTS No SNPs were associated with the course of depressive symptoms. Significant interactions between serum 25(OH)D3 and SNPs in the VDR gene were found. Stratified analysis revealed that within the GG genotype strata, 10 nmol/L higher serum 25(OH)D3 was associated with 0.27 (95% CI: -0.50, -0.04) and 0.23 (95% CI: -0.48, 0.02) lower scores on the CES-D scale for Cdx-2 and 1b-G-886A, respectively. This association was not found in persons having the GA or AA genotype. CONCLUSIONS No SNPs are associated with the course of depressive symptoms. Stratified analysis shows that the effect of serum 25(OH)D3 concentrations on depressive symptoms is different among genotypes of Cdx-2 and 1b-G-886A. Future research should elucidate on the function of Cdx-2 and 1b-G-886A to describe their effect.

Abstract
This comprehensive review explores the multifaceted role of vitamin D (VD) in critically ill children, examining its implications for clinical outcomes. Although this substance has long been known for its function in maintaining bone health, it is now becoming more widely known for its extensive physiological effects, which include immune system and inflammation regulation. Observational research consistently associates VD levels with outcomes like duration of hospitalization, mortality, and illness severity in critically ill pediatric patients. Mechanistically, it exerts anti-inflammatory and endothelial protective effects while modulating the renin-angiotensin system. Increasing VD levels through supplementation presents promise as a therapeutic strategy; however, further research is necessary to elucidate optimal dosage regimens and safety profiles. This review emphasizes the significance of comprehending the intricate relationship between VD and critical illnesses among pediatric populations.

Abstract
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) manifestations range from mild to severe life-threatening symptoms, including death. COVID-19 susceptibility has been associated with various factors, but studies in Qatar are limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between COVID-19 susceptibility and various sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, including age, gender, body mass index, smoking status, education level, dietary patterns, supplement usage, physical activity, a history of bariatric surgery, diabetes, and hypertension. We utilized logistic regression to analyze these associations, using the data of 10,000 adult participants, aged from 18 to 79, from Qatar Biobank. In total, 10.5% (n = 1045) of the participants had COVID-19. Compared to non-smokers, current and ex-smokers had lower odds of having COVID-19 (odds ratio [OR] = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.44-0.68 and OR = 0.70; 95% CI: 0.57-0.86, respectively). Vitamin D supplement use was associated with an 18% reduction in the likelihood of contracting COVID-19 (OR = 0.82; 95% CI: 0.69-0.97). Obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), a history of bariatric surgery, and higher adherence to the modern dietary pattern-characterized by the consumption of foods high in saturated fat and refined carbohydrates-were positively associated with COVID-19. Our findings indicate that adopting a healthy lifestyle may be helpful in the prevention of COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
Over three years since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic, it is still a global burden. Vaccines against COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, are available and effective for preventing disease. However, their protective effects are not 100%. Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has only approved a limited number of inpatient treatments for COVID-19, such as remdesivir, baricitinib, and tocilizumab. These medications have indications and contraindications applicable to a select patient population. Finding additional effective therapies that are widely available with limited risk could be vital in optimizing treatment strategies for this viral illness. Some vitamins and supplements have been identified as potential options for managing COVID-19. Vitamin D (VD) deficiency has been associated with respiratory tract infections. Moreover, alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a powerful antioxidant and helps reduce inflammatory responses in many pathologic conditions. This review aims to analyze the current evidence regarding the effectiveness of VD and alpha-lipoic acid in COVID-19 infection in both outpatient and hospitalized patients. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were identified via the PubMed database from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2023. Inclusion criteria were as follows: the study design was a randomized controlled trial (RCT), the usage of a constant dose during the intervention period without any additional boluses, and a research ethics committee approved it. Exclusion criteria included a lack of an outcome or apparent intervention, additional boluses, or a single-dose regimen in all the interventional groups. There were 11 studies with a total sample size of 35,717 patients that met the criteria for this review. A total of 10 RCTs examined the efficacy of VD, and one RCT that reviewed the efficacy of ALA was identified. All of the articles investigated the use of VD or ALA during the treatment of COVID-19. The endpoints of each study varied, including length of stay in hospital, viral load, SARS-CoV-2 infection rate, mechanical ventilation, inflammatory markers, clinical symptoms, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, and mortality. In 8/10 VD supplementation trials, significant differences were identified between the interventional and placebo groups in the aforementioned parameters. In 2/10 VD supplementation trials, no significant differences were identified. The ALA supplementation RCT found no differences between the interventional and placebo groups in the SOFA score and 30-day all-cause mortality rate. The current literature suggests that VD can potentially reduce the SARS-CoV-2 infection rate, oxygen requirements, inflammatory markers, clinical symptoms, and mortality. Regarding ALA, although there was a suggestion of benefit, it was not statistically significant. Common limitations among the different studies included relatively small sample sizes, different geographical patient locations among studies, and differences in dosages. Trials investigating the effects of higher doses of VD supplementation on SARS-CoV-2 infection should be conducted. More research is needed to define best practices and optimal dosing protocols for the use of VD in COVID-19.

Abstract
Vaccines are one of the most important and effective tools in the prevention of infectious diseases and research about all the aspects of vaccinology are essential to increase the number of available vaccines more and more safe and effective. Despite the unquestionable value of vaccinations, vaccine hesitancy has spread worldwide compromising the success of vaccinations. Currently, the main purpose of vaccination campaigns is the immunization of whole populations with the same vaccine formulations and schedules for all individuals. A personalized vaccinology approach could improve modern vaccinology counteracting vaccine hesitancy and giving great benefits for human health. This ambitious purpose would be possible by facing and deepening the areas of vaccinomics and adversomics, two innovative areas of study investigating the role of a series of variables able to influence the immune response to vaccinations and the development of serious side effects, respectively. We reviewed the recent scientific knowledge about these innovative sciences focusing on genetic and non-genetic basis involved in the individual response to vaccines in terms of both immune response and side effects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Among the many micronutrients, Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with the severity of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 patients. DESIGN AND METHODS A retrospective observational study was conducted on Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital between April 5, 2021, and May 5, 2021. RESULTS Among 285 patients,77.2 % of the patients who stayed for more than 14 days were either Vitamin D insufficient or deficient [P value < 0.05]. In our study, the mean oxygen saturation at admission was 85.7 % in the Vitamin D deficiency group compared to 95.6 % in Vitamin D sufficiency patients [P value < 0.05]. Mean serum ferritin was 398 ng/ml in the Vitamin D deficiency group compared to 393 ng/ml in Vitamin D sufficiency patients [P value > 0.05]. The mean C-reactive protein was 107.6 mg/ml in the Vitamin D deficiency group compared to 21.8 ng/ml in Vitamin D sufficiency patients [P value < 0.05]. The mean D-Dimer was 2268 ng/ml in the Vitamin D deficiency group compared to 781 ng/ml in Vitamin D sufficiency patients [P value < 0.05]. In the non-survivor group,97.4 % were Vitamin D deficient and insufficient. Only 2 % of the patients who survived were Vitamin D deficient [P value < 0.05]. CONCLUSION We observed that low 25-hydroxy Vitamin D levels were associated with lower oxygen saturation and higher acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II scores, requiring a more extended stay in the hospital. C-reactive protein and D-dimers were significantly higher in Vitamin D deficient patients, suggesting severe disease. We did not find statistically significant findings in the case of the correlation of serum ferritin levels with Vitamin D status.

Abstract
Viruses can cause many human diseases. Three types of human diseases caused by viruses are discussed in this chapter: infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, and cancers. The infectious diseases included in this chapter include three respiratory tract diseases: influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus. In addition, the mosquito-borne dengue virus diseases are discussed. Vitamin D can reduce risk, severity, and mortality of the respiratory tract diseases and possibly for dengue virus. Many autoimmune diseases are initiated by the body's reaction to a viral infection. The protective role of vitamin D in Epstein-Barr virus-related diseases such as multiple sclerosis is discussed. There are a few cancers linked to viral infections. Such cancers include cervical cancer, head and neck cancers, Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and liver cancer. Vitamin D plays an important role in reducing risk of cancer incidence and mortality, although not as strongly for viral-linked cancers as for other types of cancer.

Abstract
The human gut houses a diverse and dynamic microbiome critical for digestion, metabolism, and immune development, exerting profound effects on human health. However, these microorganisms pose a potential threat by breaching the gut barrier, entering host tissues, and triggering infections, uncontrolled inflammation, and even sepsis. The intestinal epithelial cells form the primary defense, acting as a frontline barrier against microbial invasion. Antimicrobial proteins (AMPs), produced by these cells, serve as innate immune effectors that regulate the gut microbiome by directly killing or inhibiting microbes. Abnormal AMP production, whether insufficient or excessive, can disturb the microbiome equilibrium, contributing to various intestinal diseases. This review delves into the complex interactions between AMPs and the gut microbiota and sheds light on the role of AMPs in governing host-microbiota interactions. We discuss the function and mechanisms of action of AMPs, their regulation by the gut microbiota, microbial evasion strategies, and the consequences of AMP dysregulation in disease. Understanding these complex interactions between AMPs and the gut microbiota is crucial for developing strategies to enhance immune responses and combat infections within the gut microbiota. Ongoing research continues to uncover novel aspects of this intricate relationship, deepening our understanding of the factors shaping gut health. This knowledge has the potential to revolutionize therapeutic interventions, offering enhanced treatments for a wide range of gut-related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D correlate with higher susceptibility to acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs). The case study presented here aims at sheding light on the correlation between vitamin D levels, the vitamin D supplement dose, and the incidence of ARTIs. CASE REPORT A 23-year-old female patient with a vitamin D insufficiency was able to successfully increase her vitamin D levels from 45.60 nmol/l to 85.91 nmol/l (reference ranges 75-200 nmol/l) through the use of supplements. However, it was surprising to observe a decrease in vitamin D levels even though the patient continued taking supplements. Further examination indicated that the patient was experiencing common symptoms of an acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI). This case highlights the intricate connection between ARTIs and vitamin D intake. CONCLUSION This case study clearly demonstrates the intricate connection between vitamin D levels, supplement treatment, and ARTIs. The observed decrease in vitamin D levels during the course of supplementation, while the patient was suffering from an ARTI, suggests that respiratory infections may affect vitamin D metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is the most common allergic disease characterized by an inflammatory response in the airways. Mechanismly, urban particulate matter (PM) is the most widely air pollutant associated with increased asthma morbidity and airway inflammation. Current research found that vitamin D is an essential vitamin with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and other medical efficacy. Inadequate or deficient vitamin D often leads to the pathogenesis and stability of asthma. NGF exacerbates airway inflammation in asthma by promoting smooth muscle cell proliferation and inducing the Th2 immune response. Activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway can exert a protective effect on the inflammatory response in bronchial asthma. However, the specific mechanism of this pathway in PM-involved asthmatic airway smooth muscle cells remains unclear. METHODS Mice were sensitized and challenged with Ovalbumin (OVA) to establish an asthma model. They were then exposed to either PM, vitamin D or a combination of both, and inflammatory responses were observed. Including, acetylcholine stimulation at different concentrations measured airway hyperresponsiveness in mice. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and serum were collected for TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and Nerve growth factor (NGF) analysis. Additionally, lung tissues underwent histopathological examination to observe alveolar structure and inflammatory cell infiltration. Specific ELISA kits were utilized to determine the levels of the inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and Nerve growth factor (NGF). Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathways were examined by western blot analysis. Meanwhile, we constructed a cell system with low HO-1 expression by lentiviral transfection of airway smooth muscle cells. The changes of Nrf2, HO-1, and NGF were observed after the treatment of OVA, PM, and Vit D were given. RESULTS The in vivo results showed that vitamin D significantly alleviated pathological changes in lung tissue of PM-exposed mice models. Mechanismly, vitamin D decreased substantial inflammatory cell infiltration in lung tissue, as well as the number of inflammatory cells in BALF. Furthermore, vitamin D reduced the heightened inflammatory factors including of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and NGF caused by PM exposure, and triggered the activity of nucleus Nrf2 and HO-1 in PM-exposed asthmatic mice. Notably, knockdown HO-1 weakens the Vitamin D- mediated inhibition to pollution toxicity in asthma. Importantly, in vitro experiments on OVA-stimulated mice airway smooth muscle cells, the results showed that OVA and PM, respectively, reduced Nrf2/HO-1 and increased NGF's expression, while vitamin D reversed the process. And in the HO-1 knockdown cell line of Lenti-si-HO-1 ASMCs, OVA and PM reduced Nrf2's expression, while HO-1 and NGF's expression were unchanged. CONCLUSIONS The above results demastrate that vitamin D downregulated the inflammatory response and the expression of NGF by regulating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathways in airway smooth muscle cells, thereby showing potent anti-inflammatory activity in asthma.

Abstract
Background This review analyzed the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic globally and in India and the measures to counter its effect using natural and innate immune booster molecules. The study focuses on two phases: the first focuses on the magnitude, and the second on the effect of antioxidants (natural compounds) on SARS-CoV-2. Methods The magnitude of the prevalence, mortality, and comorbidities was acquired from the World Health Organization (WHO) report, media, a report from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), newspapers, and the National Centre of Disease Control (NCDC). Research articles from PubMed as well as other sites/journals and databases were accessed to gather literature on the effect of antioxidants. Results In the elderly and any chronic diseases, the declined level of antioxidant molecules enhanced the reactive oxygen species, which in turn deprived the immune system. Conclusion Innate antioxidant proteins like sirtuin and sestrin play a vital role in enhancing immunity. Herbal products and holistic approaches can also be alternative solutions for everyday life to boost the immune system by improving the redox balance in COVID-19 attack. This review analyzed the counteractive effect of alternative therapy to boost the immune system against the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
The pathophysiology of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is characterized by worsened inflammation because of weakened immunity, causing the infiltration of immune cells, followed by necrosis. Consequently, these pathophysiological changes may lead to a life-threatening decline in perfusion due to hyperplasia of the lungs, instigating severe pneumonia, and causing fatalities. Additionally, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection can cause mortality due to viral septic shock, resulting from unrestrained and backfiring immune reactions to the pathogen. Sepsis can cause premature organ failure in COVID-19 patients, as well. Notably, vitamin D and its derivatives and minerals, such as zinc and magnesium, have been reported to improve the immune system against respiratory illnesses. This comprehensive review aims to provide updated mechanistic details of vitamin D and zinc as immunomodulators. Additionally, this review also focuses on their role in respiratory illnesses, while specifically delineating the plausibility of employing them as a preventive and therapeutic agent against current and future pandemics from an immunological perspective. Furthermore, this comprehensive review will attract the attention of health professionals, nutritionists, pharmaceuticals, and scientific communities, as it encourages the use of such micronutrients for therapeutic purposes, as well as promoting their health benefits for a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing.

Abstract
Introduction: Long COVID is a term that encompasses a range of signs, symptoms, and sequalae that continue or develop after an acute COVID-19 infection. The lack of early recognition of the condition contributed to delays in identifying factors that may contribute toward its development and prevention. The aim of this study was to scope the available literature to identify potential nutritional interventions to support people with symptoms associated with long COVID. Methods: This study was designed as a systematic scoping review of the literature (registration PROSPERO CRD42022306051). Studies with participants aged 18 years or older, with long COVID and who underwent a nutritional intervention were included in the review. Results: A total of 285 citations were initially identified, with five papers eligible for inclusion: two were pilot studies of nutritional supplements in the community, and three were nutritional interventions as part of inpatient or outpatient multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs. There were two broad categories of interventions: those that focused on compositions of nutrients (including micronutrients such as vitamin and mineral supplements) and those that were incorporated as part of multidisciplinary rehabilitation programs. Nutrients included in more than one study were multiple B group vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D, and acetyl-l-carnitine. Discussion: Two studies trialed nutritional supplements for long COVID in community samples. Although these initial reports were positive, they are based on poorly designed studies and therefore cannot provide conclusive evidence. Nutritional rehabilitation was an important aspect of recovery from severe inflammation, malnutrition, and sarcopenia in hospital rehabilitation programs. Current gaps in the literature include a potential role for anti-inflammatory nutrients such as the omega 3 fatty acids, which are currently undergoing clinical trials, glutathione-boosting treatments such as N-acetylcysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, or liposomal glutathione in long COVID, and a possible adjunctive role for anti-inflammatory dietary interventions. This review provides preliminary evidence that nutritional interventions may be an important part of a rehabilitation program for people with severe long COVID symptomatology, including severe inflammation, malnutrition, and sarcopenia. For those in the general population with long COVID symptoms, the role of specific nutrients has not yet been studied well enough to recommend any particular nutrient or dietary intervention as a treatment or adjunctive treatment. Clinical trials of single nutrients are currently being conducted, and future systematic reviews could focus on single nutrient or dietary interventions to identify their nuanced mechanisms of action. Further clinical studies incorporating complex nutritional interventions are also warranted to strengthen the evidence base for using nutrition as a useful adjunctive treatment for people living with long COVID.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D (VitD) has been shown to be important for the immune response of the respiratory system, but the preventive and therapeutic effects of vitamin D supplementation on SARS-CoV-2 infection are controversial. This study aimed to determine the role of vitamin D supplementation in the prevention and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection through a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. METHODS The databases of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science and Google Scholar were searched systematically from inception to April 17,2023 to identify trials involving a randomized comparison of vitamin D supplementation versus non-vitamin D supplementation for SARS-CoV-2 infection prevention or treatment. RESULTS We retrieved 25 eligible trials, including 8128 participants. Four trials compared the preventive effects of vitamin D supplementation on SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the results (RR 0.31; 95%CI 0.07 to 1.32) were inconclusive. Regarding the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection with vitamin D supplementation, it was found that vitamin D supplementation could significantly reduce the rates of ICU admission (RR 0.63; 95%CI 0.44 to 0.89) and mechanical ventilation (RR 0.58; 95%CI 0.39 to 0.84), but had no statistically significant effect on mortality. However, in subgroup analyses based on the patients' specific conditions, vitamin D supplementation significantly reduced the mortality in patients with vitamin D deficiency (RR 0.76; 95%CI 0.58 to 0.98). CONCLUSION Vitamin D supplementation may have some beneficial impact on the severity of illness caused by SARS-CoV-2, particularly in VitD deficient patients, but further studies are still needed.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D participates in the biological function of the innate and adaptive immune system and inflammation. We aim to specify the effectiveness of the vitamin D supplementation on the side effects BioNTech, Pfizer vaccination, and immunoglobulin G response against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 in subjects tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods In this multi-center randomized clinical trial, 498 people tested positive for COVID-19 were divided into 2 groups, receiving vitamin D capsules or a placebo (1 capsule daily, each containing 600 IU of vitamin D) over 14-16 weeks. Anthropometric indices and biochemical parameters were measured before and after the second dose of vaccination. Result Fourteen to 16 weeks after supplementation, the intervention group had an immunoglobulin G (IgG) increase of 10.89 ± 1.2 g/L, while the control group had 8.89 ± 1.3 g/L, and the difference was significant between both groups (p = 0.001). After the second dose of vaccination, the supplement group significantly increased their 25-hydroxy vitamin D from initially 28.73 ± 15.6 ng/mL and increased to 46.48 ± 27.2 ng/mL, and the difference between them was significant. Those with a higher body mass index (BMI) had the most of symptoms, and the difference of side effects according to BMI level was significantly different. In 8 weeks after supplementation obese participants had the lowest IgG levels than overweight or normal subjects. The proportion of all types of side effects on the second dose was significantly diminished compared with the first dose in the intervention group. Conclusion Supplementation of 600 IU of vitamin D3 can reduce post-vaccination side effects and increase IgG levels in participants who received BioNTech, Pfizer vaccine. Abstract
Background and Objectives People frequently utilize dietary supplements (DS), notably during the COVID-19 epidemic, despite the lack of data supporting their usefulness and safety in enhancing general health. This study aimed to measure the consumption of DS in Saudi Arabia during COVID-19. Previous studies focused on using dietary supplements for preventing or reducing mental health. Materials and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1572 participants aged 18-65, from all-over Saudi Arabia who were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire to measure the consumption of supplements during the pandemic lockdown period. Also, it investigates the factor that effect supplements consumption. Results Around 63% of the participants did not change their consumption patterns during the pandemic, while 16% consumed more and 21.4% consumed fewer supplements during the pandemic. The most commonly used supplements were iron; calcium, especially among pregnant women; omega-3, especially in people older than 65 years; and vitamin D. Females (81%; P < 0.002); age (94.7%; P < 0.002); married people (84%; P < 0.001); those with a higher educational level (83.9%; P = 0.02); those with a higher monthly income (86.1%; P = 0.006); and pregnant women (100%; P < 0.007) reported the highest rates of consumption. Conclusion Dietary supplements have recently become popular in Saudi Arabia, but large differences remain between Saudis in their consumption of supplements. Additional research should be conducted to examine the level of knowledge of dietary supplements among Saudi population.

Abstract
Both 25-autoimmunity and(25(OH)D: calcifediol) and its active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D: calcitriol), play critical roles in protecting humans from invasive pathogens, reducing risks of autoimmunity, and maintaining health. Conversely, low 25(OH)D status increases susceptibility to infections and developing autoimmunity. This systematic review examines vitamin D's mechanisms and effects on enhancing innate and acquired immunity against microbes and preventing autoimmunity. The study evaluated the quality of evidence regarding biology, physiology, and aspects of human health on vitamin D related to infections and autoimmunity in peer-reviewed journal articles published in English. The search and analyses followed PRISMA guidelines. Data strongly suggested that maintaining serum 25(OH)D concentrations of more than 50 ng/mL is associated with significant risk reduction from viral and bacterial infections, sepsis, and autoimmunity. Most adequately powered, well-designed, randomized controlled trials with sufficient duration supported substantial benefits of vitamin D. Virtually all studies that failed to conclude benefits or were ambiguous had major study design errors. Treatment of vitamin D deficiency costs less than 0.01% of the cost of investigation of worsening comorbidities associated with hypovitaminosis D. Despite cost-benefits, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency remains high worldwide. This was clear among those who died from COVID-19 in 2020/21-most had severe vitamin D deficiency. Yet, the lack of direction from health agencies and insurance companies on using vitamin D as an adjunct therapy is astonishing. Data confirmed that keeping an individual's serum 25(OH)D concentrations above 50 ng/mL (125 nmol/L) (and above 40 ng/mL in the population) reduces risks from community outbreaks, sepsis, and autoimmune disorders. Maintaining such concentrations in 97.5% of people is achievable through daily safe sun exposure (except in countries far from the equator during winter) or taking between 5000 and 8000 IU vitamin D supplements daily (average dose, for non-obese adults, ~70 to 90 IU/kg body weight). Those with gastrointestinal malabsorption, obesity, or on medications that increase the catabolism of vitamin D and a few other specific disorders require much higher intake. This systematic review evaluates non-classical actions of vitamin D, with particular emphasis on infection and autoimmunity related to the immune system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There remains a need to identify low-cost interventions to improve coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes. Vitamin D and zinc play a role in respiratory infections and could hold value as part of therapeutic regimens. OBJECTIVES To determine the effect of vitamin D or zinc supplementation on recovery from COVID-19. METHODS We conducted a double-blind, randomly assigned 2 x 2 factorial placebo-controlled trial with 1:1:1:1 allocation ratio, enrolling nonpregnant adults with COVID-19 from hospitals in Mumbai and Pune, India (NCT04641195). Participants (N = 181) were randomly assigned to vitamin D3 (180,000 IU bolus, then 2000 IU daily), zinc (40 mg daily), vitamin D3 and zinc, or placebo, for 8 wk. Participants were followed until 8 wk. The primary outcome was time to resolution of fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Secondary outcomes were duration of individual symptoms; need for assisted ventilation; duration of hospital stay; all-cause mortality; and blood biomarkers, including nutritional, inflammatory, and immunological markers. RESULTS We observed no effect of vitamin D or zinc supplementation on time to resolution of all 3 symptoms [vitamin D hazard ratio (HR): 0.92; 95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.66, 1.30; P = 0.650; zinc HR: 0.94; 95% CI: 0.67, 1.33; P = 0.745)]. Neither vitamin D nor zinc supplementation was associated with secondary outcomes, except for increased endline serum vitamin D with vitamin D supplementation [median (interquartile range) difference between endline and baseline for vitamin D: 5.3 ng/mL (-2.3 to 13.7); for no vitamin D: -1.4 ng/mL (-5.6 to 3.9); P = 0.003]. We observed nonsignificant increases in serum zinc at endline following zinc supplementation. There was no evidence of interaction between vitamin D and zinc supplementation, no effect of either on hypercalcemia, and no adverse events. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that neither vitamin D nor zinc supplementation improves COVID-19 treatment outcomes in this population. However, much larger-scale evidence, particularly from populations with vitamin D or zinc deficiency and severe infection, is required to corroborate our findings. This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov and the Clinical Trials Registry of India as NCT04641195 and CTRI/2021/04/032593 respectively.

Abstract
The novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes major challenges to the healthcare system. SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to millions of deaths worldwide and the mortality rate is found to be greatly associated with pre-existing clinical conditions. The existing dataset strongly suggests that cardiometabolic diseases including hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes and obesity serve as strong comorbidities in coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Studies have also shown the poor outcome of COVID-19 in patients associated with angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 polymorphism, cancer chemotherapy, chronic kidney disease, thyroid disorder, or coagulation dysfunction. A severe complication of COVID-19 is mostly seen in people with compromised medical history. SARS-CoV-2 appears to attack the respiratory system causing pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, which lead to induction of severe systemic inflammation, multi-organ dysfunction, and death mostly in the patients who are associated with pre-existing comorbidity factors. In this article, we highlighted the key comorbidities and a variety of clinical complications associated with COVID-19 for a better understanding of the etiopathogenesis of COVID-19.

Abstract
Vitamins play a crucial role in the proper functioning of organisms. Disturbances of their levels, seen as deficiency or excess, enhance the development of various diseases, including those of the cardiovascular, immune, or respiratory systems. The present paper aims to summarize the role of vitamins in one of the most common diseases of the respiratory system, asthma. This narrative review describes the influence of vitamins on asthma and its main symptoms such as bronchial hyperreactivity, airway inflammation, oxidative stress, and airway remodeling, as well as the correlation between vitamin intake and levels and the risk of asthma in both pre- and postnatal life.

Abstract
Vitamin D and its role in the coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19) pandemic has been controversially discussed, with inconclusive evidence about vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) supplementation in COVID-19 patients. Vitamin D metabolites play an important role in the initiation of the immune response and can be an easily modifiable risk factor in 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3)-deficient patients. This is a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind trial to compare the effect of a single high dose of vitamin D3 followed by treatment as usual (TAU) of daily vitamin D3 daily until discharge versus placebo plus TAU in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 and 25(OH)D3-deficiency on length hospital stay. We included 40 patients per group and did not observe a significant difference in the median length of hospital stay (6 days in both groups, p = 0.920). We adjusted the length of stay for COVID-19 risk factors (β = 0.44; 95% CI: -2.17-2.22), and center (β = 0.74; 95% CI: -1.25-2.73). The subgroup analysis in patients with severe 25(OH)D3-deficiency (<25 nmol/L) showed a non-significant reduction in the median length of hospital stay in the intervention group (5.5 vs. 9 days, p = 0.299). The competing risk model with death did not reveal significant differences between the group in the length of stay (HR = 0.96, 95% CI 0.62-1.48, p = 0.850). Serum 25(OH)D3 level increased significantly in the intervention group (mean change in nmol/L; intervention: +26.35 vs. control: -2.73, p < 0.001). The intervention with 140,000 IU vitamin D3 + TAU did not significantly shorten the length of hospital stay but was effective and safe for the elevation of serum 25(OH)D3 levels.

Abstract
AIM Vitamin D plays an important role in immune system regulation, also its deficiency is assumed to affect the patients' predisposition to viral diseases such as recurrent herpes labialis. In this cross-sectional study, we tried to compare the mean serum level of vitamin D in participants with a positive history of recurrent herpes labial lesions and healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS The vitamin D serum level of 43 participants with a positive history of recurrent herpes labial lesions who were referred to the Motahhari laboratory in Shiraz during 2020-2022, was compared with 42 healthy controls. It was assessed by an Elisa kit. An Independent T-test was used to compare the vitamin D serum level between two genders. In order to assess the mean age value and gender distribution, an independent T-test and Pearson Chi-Square were used, respectively for the two groups. The serum vitamin D level was compared between both control and test groups. RESULTS There was no significant difference between vitamin D mean serum levels in the two evaluated groups (p.value = 0.72). Although the age (p.value = 0.09) and recurrence (p.value = 0.13) of herpes labialis had no statistically significant relation to the vitamin D serum level, the healing duration of herpes labialis was inversely related (p.value = 0.01). Lower-level of serum vitamin D were accompanied by a longer healing duration of the lesions. CONCLUSION Although the vitamin D serum level of participants with a history of recurrent herpes labialis had no relation with age and herpes virus recurrence frequency, a longer healing duration of lesions had been reported in patients with lower serum levels of vitamin D.

Abstract
Thromboembolic complications including cerebrovascular accidents, pulmonary embolism, myocardial infarction, deep vein thrombosis and disseminating intravascular coagulopathy are serious encounters in sever coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infected patients. This worsens the prognosis and may lead to death or life long morbidities. The laboratory finding of the disturbed haemostasias and the hyperinflammatory response are almost invariably present in COVID-19 patients. Multiple treatment modalities are utilized by the healthcare professionals to overcome the cytokine storm, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and coagulopathy in these patients. The combined actions of vitamin D (VitD) as a steroid hormone with anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antithrombotic properties increase the potential of the possible involvement of hypovitaminosis D in the thromboembolic complications of COVID-19 infection, and stimulated researchers and physicians to administer VitD therapy to prevent the infection and/or overcome the disease complications. The current review highlighted the immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative and hemostatic functions of VitD and its interrelation with the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) pathway and the complement system. Additionally, the association of VitD deficiency with the incidence and progression of COVID-19 infection and the associated cytokine storm, oxidative stress, hypercoagulability, and endothelial dysfunction were emphasized. Normalizing VitD levels by daily low dose therapy in patients with hypovitaminosis D below (25 nmol/l) is essential for a balanced immune response and maintaining the health of the pulmonary epithelium. It protects against upper respiratory tract infections and decreases the complications of COVID-19 infections. Understanding the role of VitD and its associated molecules in the protection against the coagulopathy, vasculopathy, inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction in COVID-19 infection could lead to new therapeutic strategies to prevent, treat, and limit the complications of this deadly virus infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the sparse data on vitamin D status in pediatric COVID-19, we investigated whether vitamin D deficiency could be a risk factor for susceptibility to COVID-19 in Egyptian children and adolescents. We also investigated whether vitamin D receptor (VDR) FokI polymorphism could be a genetic marker for COVID-19 susceptibility. METHODS One hundred and eighty patients diagnosed to have COVID-19 and 200 matched control children and adolescents were recruited. Patients were laboratory confirmed as SARS-CoV-2 positive by real-time RT-PCR. All participants were genotyped for VDR Fok1 polymorphism by RT-PCR. Vitamin D status was defined as sufficient for serum 25(OH) D at least 30 ng/mL, insufficient at 21-29 ng/mL, deficient at <20 ng/mL. RESULTS Ninety-four patients (52%) had low vitamin D levels with 74 (41%) being deficient and 20 (11%) had vitamin D insufficiency. Vitamin D deficiency was associated with 2.6-fold increased risk for COVID-19 (OR = 2.6; [95% CI 1.96-4.9]; P = 0.002. The FokI FF genotype was significantly more represented in patients compared to control group (OR = 4.05; [95% CI: 1.95-8.55]; P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D deficiency and VDR Fok I polymorphism may constitute independent risk factors for susceptibility to COVID-19 in Egyptian children and adolescents. IMPACT Vitamin D deficiency could be a modifiable risk factor for COVID-19 in children and adolescents because of its immune-modulatory action. To our knowledge, ours is the first such study to investigate the VDR Fok I polymorphism in Caucasian children and adolescents with COVID-19. Vitamin D deficiency and the VDR Fok I polymorphism may constitute independent risk factors for susceptibility to COVID-19 in Egyptian children and adolescents. Clinical trials should be urgently conducted to test for causality and to evaluate the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation for prophylaxis and treatment of COVID-19 taking into account the VDR polymorphisms.

Abstract
A growing body of research has shown how important vitamin D is in the prognosis of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19). The vitamin D receptor is necessary for vitamin D to perform its effects, and its polymorphisms can help in this regard. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether the association of ApaI rs7975232 and BsmI rs1544410 polymorphisms in different severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants were influential in the outcomes of COVID-19. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method was utilized to determine the different genotypes of ApaI rs7975232 and BsmI rs1544410 in 1734 and 1450 patients who had recovered and deceased, respectively. Our finding revealed that the ApaI rs7975232 AA genotype in the Delta and Omicron BA.5 and the CA genotype in the Delta and Alpha variants were associated with higher mortality rate. Also, the BsmI rs1544410 GG genotype in the Delta and Omicron BA.5 and the GA genotype in the Delta and Alpha variants were related to a higher mortality rate. The A-G haplotype was linked with COVID-19 mortality in both the Alpha and Delta variants. The A-A haplotype for the Omicron BA.5 variants was statistically significant. In conclusion, our research revealed a connection between SARS-CoV-2 variants and the impacts of ApaI rs7975232 and BsmI rs1544410 polymorphisms. However, more research is still needed to substantiate our findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperinflammatory response that resembles Kawasaki disease may develop in children after COVID-19 disease, and it is called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. The cause of MIS-C is dysregulated innate immune response and a subsequent cytokine storm that results in endothelial damage. It has been determined that low levels of serum 25(OH)D increase the risk of developing immune-related diseases and disorders. METHODS To determine the incidence of hypovitaminosis D, and a possible correlation between 25(OH)D levels and the clinical severity of MIS-C, 21 patients hospitalized in the University Hospital of Split due to MIS-C were evaluated. RESULTS Hypovitaminosis D was detected in 95% of MIS-C patients. We found a significant relationship between the severity of MIS-C and 25(OH)D levels, as patients with more severe MIS-C had lower 25(OH)D. MIS-C patients with lower vitamin D levels had worse systolic and diastolic function of the left ventricle according to echocardiograms. There was no relationship between 25(OH)D levels and the tested laboratory inflammatory and cardiac markers. CONCLUSION Hypovitaminosis D is very common in children with MIS-C and influences the severity of the disease. VD could be a new potential biomarker in MIS-C, and VD replacement therapy should be considered early on in the treatment of MIS-C.

Abstract
The effect of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) on the immune response of laying hens is not well elucidated. This study investigated the effects of 25OHD on egg production, egg quality, immune response, and intestinal health of laying hens challenged with Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). One hundred and sixty laying hens at 45 wk of age were randomly divided into 4 dietary treatments with 10 replicates of 4 birds. Hens were fed the corn-soybean based diets contained either 0 or 80 µg/kg 25OHD for 8 wks. At wk of 53 wk, birds of each dietary treatment were injected into the abdomen with 1.5 mg/kg body weight of either LPS or saline a day at 24-h intervals for continuous 7 d. LPS injection significantly decreased (PLPS < 0.05) egg laying rate, feed intake and feed efficiency; while the supplementation of 25OHD increased (PInteraction < 0.05) egg laying rate, feed efficiency and decreased (PInteraction < 0.05) the broken egg rate in layers under LPS injection. LPS challenge decreased (PLPS < 0.05) eggshell strength, eggshell thickness, albumen height and Haugh unit, while dietary 25OHD supplementation increased eggshell strength and eggshell thickness (P25OHD < 0.05). The serum proinflammatory factors [tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6)], endotoxin and diamine oxidase (DAO) levels were higher in layers under LPS challenge (PLPS < 0.05); whereas the dietary addition of 25OHD were shown to decrease (P25OHD < 0.05) serum IL-1β and IL-6 concentration irrespective of LPS challenge and led to a higher serum 25OHD level and a reduction in endotoxin concentration in layers under LPS challenge (PInteraction < 0.05). The layers under LPS challenge had higher crypt depth and lower villus height/crypt depth (V/C) ratio in duodenum and jejunum (PLPS < 0.05), while feeding 25OHD were shown to have decreasing effect on crypt depth and increasing effect V/C ratio in layers under LPS challenge (PInteraction < 0.05). Layers under LPS challenge had lower mRNA expression of intestinal barrier associated proteins (claudin-1 and mucin-1) (PLPS < 0.05), while the addition of 25OHD up-regulated claudin-1 and mucin-1 expression (Pinteraction < 0.05). Lower antioxidant enzymes activities, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and higher malondialdehyde (MDA) content in jejunum were found in layers challenged with LPS (P25OHD < 0.05). The effect of 25OHD reversed the effect of LPS on SOD, T-AOC, and MDA content (PInteraction< 0.05). These results suggest that supplementing 80 µg/kg 25OHD in diets may elevate laying performance and egg quality through the improvement of intestinal barrier function, antioxidant capacity, and decreased the proinflammatory cytokines levels in laying hens with Escherichia coli LPS challenge.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Micronutrients are clinically important in managing COVID-19, and numerous studies have been conducted, but inconsistent findings exist. OBJECTIVE To explore the association between micronutrients and COVID-19. METHODS PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library and Scopus for study search on July 30, 2022 and October 15, 2022. Literature selection, data extraction and quality assessment were performed in a double-blinded, group discussion format. Meta-analysis with overlapping associations were reconsolidated using random effects models, and narrative evidence was performed in tabular presentations. RESULTS 57 reviews and 57 latest original studies were included. 21 reviews and 53 original studies were of moderate to high quality. Vitamin D, vitamin B, zinc, selenium, and ferritin levels differed between patients and healthy people. Vitamin D and zinc deficiencies increased COVID-19 infection by 0.97-fold/0.39-fold and 1.53-fold. Vitamin D deficiency increased severity 0.86-fold, while low vitamin B and selenium levels reduced severity. Vitamin D and calcium deficiencies increased ICU admission by 1.09 and 4.09-fold. Vitamin D deficiency increased mechanical ventilation by 0.4-fold. Vitamin D, zinc, and calcium deficiencies increased COVID-19 mortality by 0.53-fold, 0.46-fold, and 5.99-fold, respectively. CONCLUSION The associations between vitamin D, zinc, and calcium deficiencies and adverse evolution of COVID-19 were positive, while the association between vitamin C and COVID-19 was insignificant.REGISTRATION: PROSPERO CRD42022353953.

Abstract
The role of steroid hormones against infectious diseases has been extensively studied. From immunomodulatory action to direct inhibition of microorganism growth, hormones D3 (VD3) and 17β-estradiol (E2), and the genetic pathways modulated by them, are key targets for a better understanding pathogenesis of infectious respiratory diseases (IRD) such as tuberculosis (TB) and the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). Currently, the world faces two major public health problems, the outbreak of COVID-19, accounting for more than 6 million so far, and TB, more than 1 million deaths per year. Both, although resulting from different pathogens, the Mtb and the SARS-CoV-2, respectively, are considered serious and epidemic. TB and COVID-19 present similar infection rates between men and women, however the number of complications and deaths resulting from the two infections is higher in men when compared to women in childbearing age, which may indicate a role of the sex hormone E2 in the context of these diseases. E2 and VD3 act upon key gene pathways as important immunomodulatory players and supporting molecules in IRDs. This review summarizes the main roles of these hormones (VD3 and E2) in modulating immune and inflammatory responses and their relationship with TB and COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since the previous Cochrane Review on this topic in 2016, debate has continued surrounding a potential role for vitamin D in reducing risk of asthma exacerbation and improving asthma control. We therefore conducted an updated meta-analysis to include data from new trials completed since this date. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of administration of vitamin D or its hydroxylated metabolites in reducing the risk of severe asthma exacerbations (defined as those requiring treatment with systemic corticosteroids) and improving asthma symptom control. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Airways Group Trial Register and reference lists of articles. We contacted the authors of studies in order to identify additional trials. Date of last search: 8 September 2022. SELECTION CRITERIA We included double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trials of vitamin D in children and adults with asthma evaluating exacerbation risk or asthma symptom control, or both. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Four review authors independently applied study inclusion criteria, extracted the data, and assessed risk of bias. We obtained missing data from the authors where possible. We reported results with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The primary outcome was the incidence of severe asthma exacerbations requiring treatment with systemic corticosteroids. Secondary outcomes included the incidence of asthma exacerbations precipitating an emergency department visit or requiring hospital admission, or both, end-study childhood Asthma Control Test (cACT) or Asthma Control Test (ACT) scores, and end-study % predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). We performed subgroup analyses to determine whether the effect of vitamin D on risk of asthma exacerbation was modified by baseline vitamin D status, vitamin D dose, frequency of dosing regimen, form of vitamin D given, and age of participants. MAIN RESULTS We included 20 studies in this review; 15 trials involving a total of 1155 children and five trials involving a total of 1070 adults contributed data to analyses. Participant ages ranged from 1 to 84 years, with two trials providing data specific to participants under five years (n = 69) and eight trials providing data specific to participants aged 5 to 16 (n = 766). Across the trials, 1245 participants were male and 1229 were female, with two studies not reporting sex distribution. Fifteen trials contributed to the primary outcome analysis of exacerbations requiring systemic corticosteroids. The duration of trials ranged from three to 40 months; all but two investigated effects of administering cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). As in the previous Cochrane Review, the majority of participants had mild to moderate asthma, and profound vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) < 25 nmol/L) at baseline was rare. Administration of vitamin D or its hydroxylated metabolites did not reduce or increase the proportion of participants experiencing one or more asthma exacerbations treated with systemic corticosteroids (odds ratio (OR) 1.04, 95% CI 0.81 to 1.34; I2 = 0%; 14 studies, 1778 participants; high-quality evidence). This equates to an absolute risk of 226 per 1000 (95% CI 185 to 273) in the pooled vitamin D group, compared to a baseline risk of 219 participants per 1000 in the pooled placebo group. We also found no effect of vitamin D supplementation on the rate of exacerbations requiring systemic corticosteroids (rate ratio 0.86, 95% CI 0.62 to 1.19; I2 = 60%; 10 studies, 1599 participants; high-quality evidence), or the time to first exacerbation (hazard ratio 0.82, 95% CI 0.59 to 1.15; I2 = 22%; 3 studies, 850 participants; high-quality evidence). Subgroup analysis did not reveal any evidence of effect modification by baseline vitamin D status, vitamin D dose, frequency of dosing regimen, or age. A single trial investigating administration of calcidiol reported a benefit of the intervention for the primary outcome of asthma control. Vitamin D supplementation did not influence any secondary efficacy outcome meta-analysed, which were all based on moderate- or high-quality evidence. We observed no effect on the incidence of serious adverse events (OR 0.89, 95% CI 0.56 to 1.41; I2 = 0%; 12 studies, 1556 participants; high-quality evidence). The effect of vitamin D on fatal asthma exacerbations was not estimable, as no such events occurred in any trial. Six studies reported adverse reactions potentially attributable to vitamin D. These occurred across treatment and control arms and included hypercalciuria, hypervitaminosis D, kidney stones, gastrointestinal symptoms and mild itch. In one trial, we could not ascertain the total number of participants with hypercalciuria from the trial report. We assessed three trials as being at high risk of bias in at least one domain; none of these contributed data to the analysis of the outcomes reported above. Sensitivity analyses that excluded these trials from each outcome to which they contributed did not change the null findings. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS In contrast to findings of our previous Cochrane Review on this topic, this updated review does not find evidence to support a role for vitamin D supplementation or its hydroxylated metabolites to reduce risk of asthma exacerbations or improve asthma control. Participants with severe asthma and those with baseline 25(OH)D concentrations < 25 nmol/L were poorly represented, so further research is warranted here. A single study investigating effects of calcidiol yielded positive results, so further studies investigating effects of this metabolite are needed.

Abstract
The novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) conveys a serious global threat to health and economy. A common predisposing factor for development to serious progressive disease is presence of a low-grade inflammation, e.g., as seen in diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and heart failure. Micronutrient deficiencies may also contribute to the development of this state. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to explore the role of the nutrition to relieve progression of COVID-19. According PRISMA protocol, we conducted an online databases search including Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar and web of science for published literatures in the era of COVID-19 Outbreak regarding to the status of nutrition and COVID-19 until December 2021. There were available studies (80 studies) providing direct evidence regarding the associations between the status of nutrition and COVID-19 infection. Adequate nutritional supply is essential for resistance against other viral infections and also for improvement of immune function and reduction of inflammation. Hence, it is suggested that nutritional intervention which secures an adequate status might protect against the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - coronavirus-2) and mitigate its course. We also recommend initiation of adequate nutritional supplementation in high-risk areas and/or soon after the time of suspected infection with SARS-CoV-2. Subjects in high-risk groups should have high priority for applying this nutritive adjuvant therapy that should be started prior to administration of specific and supportive medical measures.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has hugely impacted many different aspects of human health, and vaccination is one of the most effective weapons to manage it. However, many different factors, such as age, gender, comorbidities and lifestyles, play a role in the response to infections and vaccines. We carried out this study to evaluate the potential role played by some individual factors in the production of anti-COVID-19 antibodies in the light of personalized and future vaccinology. We conducted an observational study consisting of a retrospective phase, exploiting previous data about anti-COVID-19 antibody responses, with a prospective phase to investigate individual variables through the use of a questionnaire. The antibody response after the COVID-19 vaccination was inversely related to old age, increased BMI and the number of smoking years, while a positive correlation was found with moderate alcohol consumption and especially with circulating levels of vitamin D, as clearly shown by the multivariate regression analysis. Our study showed that a number of variables are involved in the COVID-19 vaccine antibody response. These findings are very important and can be considered in the light of a future and personalized vaccinology.

Protective Effect of Vitamin D Supplementation on COVID-19-Related Intensive Care Hospitalization and Mortality: Definitive Evidence from Meta-Analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis. Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic represents one of the world's most important challenges for global public healthcare. Various studies have found an association between severe vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19-related outcomes. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in immune function and inflammation. Recent data have suggested a protective role of vitamin D in COVID-19-related health outcomes. The purpose of this meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis (TSA) was to better explain the strength of the association between the protective role of vitamin D supplementation and the risk of mortality and admission to intensive care units (ICUs) in patients with COVID-19. METHODS We searched four databases on 20 September 2022. Two reviewers screened the randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and assessed the risk of bias, independently and in duplicate. The pre-specified outcomes of interest were mortality and ICU admission. RESULTS We identified 78 bibliographic citations. After the reviewers' screening, only five RCTs were found to be suitable for our analysis. We performed meta-analyses and then TSAs. Vitamin D administration results in a decreased risk of death and ICU admission (standardized mean difference (95% CI): 0.49 (0.34-0.72) and 0.28 (0.20-0.39), respectively). The TSA of the protective role of vitamin D and ICU admission showed that, since the pooling of the studies reached a definite sample size, the positive association is conclusive. The TSA of the protective role of vitamin D in mortality risk showed that the z-curve was inside the alpha boundaries, indicating that the positive results need further studies. DISCUSSION The results of the meta-analyses and respective TSAs suggest a definitive association between the protective role of vitamin D and ICU hospitalization.

Abstract
COVID-19 remains a life-threatening infectious disease worldwide. Several bio-active agents have been tested and evaluated in an effort to contain this disease. Unfortunately, none of the therapies have been successful, owing to their safety concerns and the presence of various adverse effects. Various countries have developed vaccines as a preventive measure; however, they have not been widely accepted as effective strategies. The virus has proven to be exceedingly contagious and lethal, so finding an effective treatment strategy has been a top priority in medical research. The significance of vitamin D in influencing many components of the innate and adaptive immune systems is examined in this study. This review aims to summarize the research on the use of vitamin D for COVID-19 treatment and prevention. Vitamin D supplementation has now become an efficient option to boost the immune response for all ages in preventing the spread of infection. Vitamin D is an immunomodulator that treats infected lung tissue by improving innate and adaptive immune responses and downregulating the inflammatory cascades. The preventive action exerted by vitamin D supplementation (at a specific dose) has been accepted by several observational research investigations and clinical trials on the avoidance of viral and acute respiratory dysfunctions. To assess the existing consensus about vitamin D supplementation as a strategy to treat and prevent the development and progression of COVID-19 disease, this review intends to synthesize the evidence around vitamin D in relation to COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this paper was to evaluate the change in 25-hidroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS In this retrospective, cross-sectional and methodological study included 86,772 patients (18-75 years) samples who were admitted to the Izmir Dokuz Eylul University Hospital (latitude and longitude (Turkey): 27 E 09; 38 N 25, respectively) for various reasons and whose 25(OH)D levels were measured in the biochemistry unit between 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 (before and during the COVID-19 outbreak). A time series analysis of monthly averages for 25(OH)D was performed. For the purpose of seasonal study, the mean levels of 25(OH)D are grouped by years. Data were modeled in terms of 25(OH)D levels using the MATLAB Curve Fitting Toolbox. RESULTS There was no significant difference between the sexes according to 25(OH)D levels (p>0.05). 25(OH)D levels were significantly higher in the summer months and lower in the winter months (p<0.001). When comparing the spring months, 25(OH)D levels in 2020 (18 ± 10) were found to be significantly lower than in 2019 (22 ± 12) (p<0.001); on the contrary, when examined based on the summer, autumn, and winter months, it was determined that 25(OH)D levels increased in 2020 (summer: 25 ± 13, autumn: 25 ± 14, and winter: 19 ± 10) compared to 2019 (summer: 23 ± 11, autumn: 22 ± 10, and winter: 19 ± 11) (p<0.001). In the estimates curve obtained with an error margin of 11% in the time series analysis, it was estimated that the 25(OH)D averages after the pandemic would be similar to those before the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS Restrictions, partial or complete closures, and curfews can significantly affect individuals' 25(OH)D levels during the COVID-19 outbreak. There is a need for multicenter studies with larger populations covering different regions to strengthen and support our results.

Abstract
Introduction During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, vitamin D has been established as an immune-modulator that reduces pro-inflammatory damage which effectively diminish the severity of COVID-19. Vitamin D also has a significant effect against influenza and dengue and increase the seroconversion following influenza vaccination. To date, the role of vitamin D in optimizing the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines remains unclear. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between serum 25-hydroxy-cholecalciferol or 25(OH)D levels and anti-SARS-CoV-2 S-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibody levels among cancer patients. Methodology A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted among solid and hematologic cancer patients who were vaccinated with two doses of the same types of COVID-19 vaccines (either mRNA, non-replicating viral vector, or inactivated) within 6 months. Result The median serum 25(OH)D level in 119 cancer patients was 36.36 [IQR = 30.30] ng/mL. The seropositivity of S-RBD IgG and NAb reached 93.3 and 94.1%, respectively. The S-RBD IgG level was significantly higher in the sufficient group (median = 414.07 [1,441.83] AU/mL) than in the deficient group (median = 91.56 [652.00] AU/mL) (p-value = 0.049). Among non-chemotherapy subjects, the anti-SARS-CoV-2 S-RBD IgG levels had a significant positive correlation with 25(OH)D levels (p-value = 0.03; R = 0.588). The NAb levels also showed significantly positive correlation with 25(OH)D level (p-value = 0.005; R = 0.561). The 25(OH)D levels were positively correlated with S-RBD IgG levels among subjects younger than 60 years old (p-value = 0.047; R = 0.136). However, serum 25 (OH)D levels showed no such correlation with S-RBD IgG levels among subjects older than 60 years old (p-value = 0.933; R = 0.136). Conclusion Both anti-SARS-CoV-2 S-RBD IgG and NAb levels developed moderate correlation with 25(OH)D levels among subjects treated without chemotherapy. The S-RBD IgG levels also had positive correlation with 25(OH)D levels among subjects younger than 60 years old. Thus, we recommended cancer patients to maintain serum 25(OH)D levels above 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L) to enhance the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.

Abstract
A lack of vitamin D is a potential risk factor for coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Variants in the Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) gene, such as BglI rs739837 and TaqI rs731236, are associated with various viral infection progressions. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the BglI rs739837 and TaqI rs731236 polymorphisms and the mortality rate of COVID-19 based on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants. The genotyping of BglI rs739837 and TaqI rs731236 genotypes was analyzed using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism in 1734 improved and 1450 deceased patients positive for SARS-CoV-2. In this study, the rate of COVID-19 mortality was correlated with TaqI rs731236 TC and CC in the α variant and with TaqI rs731236 CC in the Delta variant, whereas no relationship was found in the Omicron BA.5 variant. In addition, the rate of COVID-19 mortality was associated with BglI rs739837 GT and TT in the Omicron BA.5 variant, while there was no association between BglI rs739837 and COVID-19 mortality in the α and Delta variants. The TG haplotype was more common in all SARS-CoV-2 variants, while the CT haplotype was associated with COVID-19 mortality in the Delta and Omicron BA.5 variants. In conclusion, this study indicated that the impacts of BglI rs739837 and TaqI rs731236 polymorphisms were related to SARS-CoV-2 variants. However, further research is still needed to approve our findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This work aims to review and discuss controversial topics in the field of vitamin D, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and COVID-19. PARTICIPANTS The International Conferences "Controversies in Vitamin D" are a series of workshops that started in 2017 featuring international experts and leaders in vitamin D research and clinical practice. The 5th annual conference was held in Stresa, Italy, from 15 to 18 September 2021. EVIDENCE Before the event, participants reviewed available studies on their assigned topic, drafted a related abstract, and presented their findings at the time of the conference. Relevant literature that became available since was also discussed within the panel and updated accordingly. CONSENSUS Before the event, the drafted abstracts had been merged to prepare a preliminary document. After the conference presentations, in-depth discussions in open sessions led to consensus. The document was subsequently modified according to discussions and up-to-date literature inclusion. CONCLUSIONS There is quite consistent evidence for an association between low 25 OH vitamin D (25(OH)D) levels and poor COVID-19 outcomes, despite heterogeneous publications of variable quality. However, the low vitamin D status in COVID-19 patients might also reflect reverse causality. Vitamin D supplementation might have a positive role in COVID-19 prevention. The evidence supporting a beneficial effect of vitamin D treatment in decreasing the risk of COVID-19 complications is conflicting. Conclusive statement regarding the beneficial effect of vitamin D in this context await high-quality randomized controlled trials.

Abstract
The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has affected many countries throughout the world. As urgency is a necessity, most efforts have focused on identifying small molecule drugs that can be repurposed for use as anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents. Although several drug candidates have been identified using in silico method and in vitro studies, most of these drugs require the support of in vivo data before they can be considered for clinical trials. Several drugs are considered promising therapeutic agents for COVID-19. In addition to the direct-acting antiviral drugs, supportive therapies including traditional Chinese medicine, immunotherapies, immunomodulators, and nutritional therapy could contribute a major role in treating COVID-19 patients. Some of these drugs have already been included in the treatment guidelines, recommendations, and standard operating procedures. In this article, we comprehensively review the approved and potential therapeutic drugs, immune cells-based therapies, immunomodulatory agents/drugs, herbs and plant metabolites, nutritional and dietary for COVID-19.

Abstract
Objective To determine the relationship between Vitamin D deficiency with Chest X-Rays severity score and Different Inflammatory Markers in Severe and Critical COVID-19 Patients. Design A cross-sectional study. Setting The study was conducted in COVID-19 isolation units at Mardan Medical Complex Teaching Hospital (MMCTH) and Bacha Khan Medical College, Pakistan. Participants 206 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 by PCR were included in the final analysis. Data Collection/Intervention We collected demographic, comorbidity, laboratory, and clinical outcome data from the electronic records of admitted, deceased, or discharged patients. Main outcome measure Frequency of symptoms, comorbidities, mortality and morbidity, chest x-ray severity scores, different inflammatory markers in Vitamin D deficient Covid-19 patients. Results 128(62.14%) were severe and 78(37.5%) were critical COVID-19 patients. The whole cohort had 82(39.80%) males and 124(60.20%) females, with a median age of 55 IQR (50-73). Study participants' median Vitamin D level was 14.01ng/ml, with a minimum of 7.5ng/ml and a maximum of 70.8ng/ml. 67/206 patients died, with a fatality ratio of 32.5%. 54/67(80.59%) suffered from one or more comorbid conditions. Conclusion Low Vitamin D levels were linked to a higher risk of death, higher x-ray severity scores, and different inflammatory markers. Vitamin D levels greater than 30ng/ml for older patients and greater than 40ng/ml in older patients with comorbidities were associated with reduced severity and mortality in patients with COVID-19. Abstract
The massive expansion of the new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has urged countries to introduce lockdowns and set restrictive actions worldwide. The focus of the studies was to determine how COVID-19 induces damage to the lungs in order to find an alternative or adjuvant therapy that could lead to preventing COVID-19 or at least ameliorating it. This paper aims to survey the literature and provide new insights into behavioral and dietary habits that could influence the prevention of COVID-19. Maintaining an adequate mental health status, sleep, and taking moderate exercise are often disrupted in the conditions of lockdown and are followed by weakened immunity. Mediterranean and vegetarian diets are superior to other eating patterns in terms of immunity boosting and fighting COVID-19. Our study showed how adequate hydration, green tea intake, and supplementation with vitamins D, C, and E can increase our chances of avoiding the infection and even help us sleep better. Another focus of the research was on determining what level of hygiene really increases one's chances of not contracting SARS-CoV-2, but this seems a little counter-intuitive at first. Since an immunocompromised state is a familiar predisposing factor for all contagious diseases, maintaining healthy behavioral and dietary habits could be a crucial step in boosting immunity and preventing COVID-19.

Abstract
Active vitamin D [1,25(OH)2D3-calcitriol] is a secosteroid hormone whose receptor is expressed on all cells of the immune system. Vitamin D has a global anti-inflammatory effect and its role in the management of a SARS-CoV-2 infection has been investigated since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this narrative review, the laboratory and clinical results of a vitamin D supplementation have been collected from both open-label and blinded randomized clinical trials. The results are generally in favor of the utility of maintaining the serum concentrations of calcifediol [25(OH)D3] at around 40 ng/mL and of the absolute usefulness of its supplementation in subjects with deficient serum levels. However, two very recent large-scale studies (one open-label, one placebo-controlled) have called into question the contribution of vitamin D to clinical practice in the era of COVID-19 vaccinations. The precise role of a vitamin D supplementation in the anti-COVID-19 armamentarium requires further investigations in light of the breakthrough which has been achieved with mass vaccinations.
