Abstract
The marsupial moles are arguably Australia's most enigmatic marsupials. Almost indistinguishable from placental (eutherian) moles, they provide a striking example of convergent evolution. Exploring the genome of the southern marsupial mole, we provide insights into its unusual biology. We show definitively by retrophylogenomic analysis that marsupial moles are most closely related to bandicoots and bilbies (order Peramelemorphia). We find evidence of a marked decline in marsupial mole effective population size, most likely preceding the arrival of humans in regions near its range, and potentially corresponding to periods of climatic change. Our analysis of loss of eye function-an adaptation to subterranean life-reveals a structured order of loss of gene function associated first with the lens, then cone, and finally rod cells. Last, we identify genetic changes suggestive of adaptation to an oxygen-poor environment and of its evolution of partially descended testes.

Abstract
Successful invasive species increase their spreading success by trading-off nutritional and metabolic resources allocated to reproduction and range expansion with other costly body functions. One proposed mechanism for the reallocation of resources is a trade-off with the immune function and the regulation of oxidative status. Relying on a panel of blood-based markers of immune function and oxidative status quantified in an invasive species (Egyptian goose) and two native competing species (mallard and mute swan) in Germany, we tested the hypothesis that the invasive species would have (i) lower investment in immune function, (ii) lower levels of oxidative damage, and (iii) no higher antioxidant defences compared to the native species. We found lower levels of adaptive immune markers (lymphocytes and immunoglobulin Y), in the invasive species compared to the two native species. Innate immune profile was generally similar between Egyptian geese and mallards. By contrast, mute swans showed higher levels of heterophils and lysozymes, and lower levels of bacteria killing ability compared to both Egyptian geese and mallards. Mute swans also showed higher levels of haemolysis and haemagglutination, but lower levels of monocytes and haematocrit compared to Egyptian geese. Reactive oxygen metabolites, a marker of oxidative damage, were higher in mallards and lower in Egyptian geese compared to the other waterfowl species, while levels of antioxidants were generally similar among the three species. Our results point to a reduced investment in adaptive immune function in the invasive species as a possible resources-saving immunological strategy due to the loss of co-evolved parasites in the new colonised habitats, as observed in a previous study. A lower investment in immune function may benefit other energy-demanding activities, such as reproduction, dispersal, and territoriality, while maintaining relatively higher innate immunity is beneficial since invasive species mainly encounter novel pathogens. Results pointed out also other important species-specific differences in baseline immune status, supporting previous findings on the relationship between species' body mass and immune profile.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate fasting plasma glucose (FPG) trend prediction is important for management and treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), a globally prevalent chronic disease. (Generalised) linear mixed-effects (LME) models and machine learning (ML) are commonly used to analyse longitudinal data; however, the former is insufficient for dealing with complex, nonlinear data, whereas with the latter, random effects are ignored. The aim of this study was to develop LME, back propagation neural network (BPNN), and mixed-effects NN models that combine the 2 to predict FPG levels. METHODS Monitoring data from 779 patients with T2DM from a multicentre, prospective study from the shared platform Figshare repository were divided 80/20 into training/test sets. The first 10 important features were modelled via random forest (RF) screening. First, an LME model was built to model interindividual differences, analyse the factors affecting FPG levels, compare the AIC and BIC values to screen the optimal model, and predict FPG levels. Second, multiple BPNN models were constructed via different variable sets to screen the optimal BPNN. Finally, an LME/BPNN combined model, named LMENN, was constructed via stacking integration. A 10-fold cross-validation cycle was performed using the training set to build the model and evaluate its performance, and then the final model was evaluated on the test set. RESULTS The top 10 variables screened by RF were HOMA-β, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, urinary sugar, insulin, BMI, waist circumference, weight, age, and group. The best-fitting random-intercept mixed-effects (lm22) model showed that each patient's baseline glucose levels influenced subsequent glucose measurements, but the trend over time was consistent. The LMENN model combines the strengths of LME and BPNN and accounts for random effects. The RMSE of the LMENN model ranges were 0.447-0.471 (training set), 0.525-0.552 (validation set), and 0.511-0.565 (test set). It improves the prediction performance of the single LME and BPNN models and shows some advantages in predicting FPG levels. CONCLUSIONS The LMENN model built by integrating LME and BPNN has several potential applications in analysing longitudinal FPG monitoring data. This study provides new ideas and methods for further research in the field of blood glucose prediction.

Abstract
Satisfying romantic relationships often feature high levels of nurturance and eroticism. Consensually non-monogamous (CNM) individuals may experience these with additional partners, potentially reducing the need for both to be present in a primary relationship to achieve satisfaction. We assessed how nurturance and eroticism relate to relationship satisfaction in single-partnered (n = 289) and multi-partnered (n = 335) individuals. We also compared relationship behavior (single vs multiple current partners) and identity (monogamous, n = 217 vs CNM, n = 399). Compared to multi-partnered individuals' reports of their primary relationship, single-partnered individuals reported similar satisfaction and nurturance, and higher eroticism. Across single- and multi-partnered individuals, nurturance and eroticism were positively associated with relationship satisfaction, with no upper level interactions. Instead, interactions emerged when assessing relationship identity. Among monogamous individuals, nurturance and eroticism also did not interact, meaning the positive association of one was consistent across levels of the other. For CNM-identified individuals, however, nurturance and eroticism interacted; nurturance was more strongly linked to satisfaction when eroticism was low, while eroticism was only linked to satisfaction when nurturance was low. When nurturance was high, there was no association between eroticism and satisfaction. Longer relationship durations were linked to lower eroticism and higher nurturance, regardless of partner number or age. Findings suggest that nurturance and eroticism contribute to satisfaction differently for monogamous and CNM individuals, with CNM individuals fostering highly satisfying relationships even when eroticism is low. This study provides a nuanced understanding of how these factors contribute to satisfaction across diverse relationship forms.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to calculate the cost of purulent vaginal discharge (PVD) in dairy cows. The data set included 11,051 cows from 16 dairy herds located in 4 regions of the US. Purulent vaginal discharge was characterized as a mucopurulent, purulent, or reddish-brownish vaginal discharge collected at 28 ± 7 d in milk. Gross profit was calculated as the difference between incomes and expenses, and the cost of PVD was calculated by subtracting the gross profit of cows with PVD from the gross profit of cows without PVD. Continuous outcomes such as milk production (kg/cow), milk sales ($/cow), cow sales ($/cow), feed costs ($/cow), reproductive management cost ($/cow), replacement costs ($/cow), and gross profit ($/cow) were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models. Pregnancy and culling by 305 DIM were analyzed by generalized linear mixed-effects models using logistic regression. Models included the fixed effects of PVD, metritis, parity, region, season of calving, and morbidity in the first 60 DIM, as well as the interactions between PVD and metritis, PVD and parity group, and PVD and morbidity. Farm and the interaction between PVD and farm were considered random effects in all the statistical models. A stochastic analysis was conducted using 10,000 iterations with varying relevant inputs. Cows with PVD produced less milk (9,753.2 ± 333.6 vs. 9,994.6 ± 330.9 kg/cow), were less likely to be pregnant (70.7 ± 1.7 vs. 78.9 ± 1.2%), and were more likely to be culled by 305 DIM (34.6 ± 1.7 vs. 27.2 ± 1.3%) compared with cows without PVD. Consequently, milk sales (4,744.7 ± 162.3 vs. 4,862.1 ± 161.0 $/cow) and residual cow value (1,079.6 ± 23.0 vs. 1,179.3 ± 20.3 $/cow) were lesser for cows with PVD. Replacement (639.4 ± 26.4 vs. 526.0 ± 23.4 $/cow) and reproductive management costs (76.3 ± 2.5 vs. 69.0 ± 2.4 $/cow) were greater for cows with PVD. The mean cost of PVD was $202. The stochastic analysis also showed a mean cost of $202, ranging from $152 to $265. The robust data set and the stochastic analysis strengthen both the external and internal validity of our findings, offering a deeper understanding of the economic consequences of PVD. In conclusion, PVD resulted in large economic losses to dairy herds by being associated with decreased milk yield, impaired reproduction, and greater culling.

Abstract
This study explored the relationship between surrounding avatars and time perception in a virtual reality (VR) gymnasium. Previous research has highlighted that motion speed and exercise intensity significantly influence time perception. In VR, time perception is shaped by various factors, such as an avatar's embodiment at different levels. However, the specific effects of the surrounding avatar on time perception in a VR gymnasium context remain unclear. Thus, this study focuses on two key attributes of the surrounding avatar: (1) motion speeds and (2) exercise intensity. Participants in a VR gymnasium either rode a stationary bike or sat on one while observing avatars performing exercises in the virtual environment(VE). They were then asked to estimate the duration judgment and the feeling of the passage of time for each task. The results revealed that when the surrounding avatars exercised at a faster motion speed, participants perceived the duration of time as longer and felt that time passed more quickly. Additionally, high-intensity exercise led participants to perceive the passage of time as faster.

Abstract
The fact that blinks occur more often than necessary for ocular lubrication has led to the proposal that blinks are involved in altering some aspects of visual cognition. Previous studies have suggested that blinking can modulate the alternation of different visual interpretations of the same stimulus, that is, perceptual alternation in multistable perception. This study investigated whether and how different types of blinks, spontaneous and voluntary, interact with perceptual alternation in a multistable perception paradigm called continuous flash suppression. The results showed that voluntary blinking facilitated perceptual alternation, whereas spontaneous blinking did not. Moreover, voluntary eye-widening, as well as eyelid closing, facilitated perceptual alternation. Physical blackouts, which had timing and duration comparable to those of voluntary blinks, did not produce facilitatory effects. These findings suggest that the effects of voluntary eyelid movements are mediated by extraretinal processes and are consistent with previous findings that different types of blinks are at least partially mediated by different neurophysiological processes. Furthermore, perceptual alternation was also found to facilitate spontaneous blinking. These results indicate that eyelid movements and perceptual alternation interact reciprocally with each other.

Abstract
Purpose A range of pharmacological and optical therapies are being studied and implemented in children with myopia to reduce the progression of myopia. At present, the efficacy of these myopia reduction treatments in children with underlying inherited retinal disorders (IRDs) is largely unknown. To evaluate this efficacy, it is essential to first understand the natural progression of myopia within each distinct underlying IRD. We investigated the natural course of refractive error throughout childhood in patients with congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) of the Schubert-Bornschein type. Methods We retrospectively assessed a total of 295 refraction measurements in 127 patients with CSNB (48 with "complete" CSNB [CSNB1] and 79 with "incomplete" CSNB [CSNB2]) at different ages between 0 and 21 years old. None had a history of myopia control treatment. A linear mixed effects model was fitted on the data to analyze the natural course of refraction in these patients. Results The fitted model showed that refractive error in patients with CSNB increases quickly toward myopia in the first years of life. After the age of 4 years, there was a minimal progression of only -0.12 diopters (D) per year up to 15 years, after which the refraction seemed stable. All (43/43) of the patients with CSNB1 aged > 4 years were myopic and 84% (62/74) of the patients with CSNB2 aged > 4 years were myopic at the last refraction measurement. Conclusions In general, the refractive error of children with CSNB changes minimally after the age of 4 years old. A critical approach to myopia control interventions in these children is warranted.

Abstract
The success of plant species under climate change will be determined, in part, by their phenological responses to temperature. Despite the growing need to forecast such outcomes across entire species ranges, it remains unclear how phenological sensitivity to temperature might vary across individuals of the same species. In this study, we harnessed community science data to document intraspecific patterns in phenological temperature sensitivity across the multicontinental range of six herbaceous plant species. Using linear models, we correlated georeferenced temperature data with 23 220 plant phenological records from iNaturalist to generate spatially explicit estimates of phenological temperature sensitivity across the shared range of species. We additionally evaluated the geographic association between local historic climate conditions (i.e. mean annual temperature [MAT] and interannual variability in temperature) and the temperature sensitivity of plants. We found that plant temperature sensitivity varied substantially at both the interspecific and intraspecific levels, demonstrating that phenological responses to climate change have the potential to vary both within and among species. Additionally, we provide evidence for a strong geographic association between plant temperature sensitivity and local historic climate conditions. Plants were more sensitive to temperature in hotter climates (i.e. regions with high MAT), but only in regions with high interannual temperature variability. In regions with low interannual temperature variability, plants displayed universally weak sensitivity to temperature, regardless of baseline annual temperature. This evidence suggests that pheno-climatic forecasts may be improved by accounting for intraspecific variation in phenological temperature sensitivity. Broad climatic factors such as MAT and interannual temperature variability likely serve as useful predictors for estimating temperature sensitivity across species' ranges.

Abstract
Clustering methods are increasingly used in social science research. Generally, researchers use them to infer the existence of qualitatively different types of individuals within a larger population, thus unveiling previously "hidden" heterogeneity. Depending on the clustering technique, however, valid inference requires some conditions and assumptions. Common risks include not only failing to detect existing clusters due to a lack of power but also revealing clusters that do not exist in the population. Simple data simulations suggest that under conditions of sample size, number, correlation and skewness of indicators that are frequently encountered in applied psychological research, commonly used clustering methods are at a high risk of detecting clusters that are not there. Generally, this is due to some violations of assumptions that are not usually considered critical in psychology. The present article illustrates a simple R tutorial and a Shiny app (for those who are not familiar with R) that allow researchers to quantify a priori inferential risks when performing clustering methods on their own data. Doing so is suggested as a much-needed preliminary sanity check, because conditions that inflate the number of detected clusters are very common in applied psychological research scenarios.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the risk of infection through face-touching behaviors, investigators have called for more research into the development of interventions to reduce the frequency of face-touching. The current study aims to test the effectiveness of messages on reducing face-touching behaviors. METHODS Nine different messages that highlighted the risk of face-touching were developed. Study 1, an online survey-experiment with a national sample of US adults (N = 998), examined message-, risk perceptions, and face-touching-related behavioral intentions. The most promising messages identified in study 1 were then tested in study 2, a follow-up behavioral observation study with a class of undergraduate students. Students' face-touching behaviors were observed during a 4-week period when intervention versus control messages were displayed in the classroom. RESULTS Four messages performed better in study 1, 2 of which were selected to test the actual message effectiveness in study 2. Study 2 results showed that on average, students touched their faces less frequently when a "Don't touch your face" message was present, although such decrease was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Having reminder messages of "Don't touch your face" in public spaces hold the potential to be a low-cost, effective strategy to reduce face-touching behaviors.

Abstract
Thyroid vascularization and hemodynamics become altered in thyroid pathologies and could thus inform diagnostics, therapy planning, and follow-up. However, the current non-invasive monitoring methods available in clinics lack the necessary sensitivity and/or are impractical for large-scale deployment. As a step towards proposing a new modality, we applied the first platform, to our knowledge, designed to do simultaneous measurements of neck anatomy and thyroid microvascular hemodynamics and metabolism in a single probe placement, integrating state-of-the-art near-infrared spectroscopy techniques and clinical ultrasound. A rich dataset was formed with sixty-five subjects (forty-eight females), including eighteen healthy volunteers and forty-seven patients with thyroid nodules, characterizing thyroid tissue and the effects of demographic and anatomical variables while preserving the standard clinical workflow. We have found marked reductions with age and body mass index in thyroid total hemoglobin concentration (THC), tissue oxygen saturation (StO 2), and blood flow index (BFi), among others. Patients showed lower THC and BFi than healthy subjects, and the limited sample of malignant nodules showed a higher StO 2 than the benign. These findings support the need for personalized clinical approaches.

Abstract
Studies of interaction effects are of great interest because they identify crucial interplay between predictors in explaining outcomes. Previous work has considered several potential sources of statistical bias and substantive misinterpretation in the study of interactions, but less attention has been devoted to the role of the outcome variable in such research. Here, we consider bias and false discovery associated with estimates of interaction parameters as a function of the distributional and metric properties of the outcome variable. We begin by illustrating that, for a variety of noncontinuously distributed outcomes (i.e., binary and count outcomes), attempts to use the linear model for recovery leads to catastrophic levels of bias and false discovery. Next, focusing on transformations of normally distributed variables (i.e., censoring and noninterval scaling), we show that linear models again produce spurious interaction effects. We provide explanations offering geometric and algebraic intuition as to why interactions are a challenge for these incorrectly specified models. In light of these findings, we make two specific recommendations. First, a careful consideration of the outcome's distributional properties should be a standard component of interaction studies. Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid β (Aβ) and phosphorylated tau. Neuroinflammation, mainly mediated by glial activation, plays an important role in AD progression. Although there is growing evidence for the anti-neuroinflammatory and neuroprotective effects of the cannabinoid system modulation, the detailed mechanism remains unclear. To address these issues, we analyzed the expression levels of cannabinoid receptor type II (Cnr2/Cb2) in AppNL-G-F/NL-G-F mice and human AD precuneus, which is vulnerable to amyloid deposition in AD, and the effects of JWH 133, a selective CB2 agonist, on neuroinflammation in primary glial cells and neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment in AppNL-G-F/NL-G-F mice. The levels of Cnr2/Cb2 were upregulated in microglia isolated from the cerebral cortex of AppNL-G-F/NL-G-F mice. CNR2 expression was also increased in RNAs derived from human precuneus with advanced AD pathology. Chronic oral administration of JWH 133 significantly ameliorated the cognitive impairment of AppNL-G-F/NL-G-F mice without neuropsychiatric side effects. Microglia and astrocyte mRNAs were directly isolated from the mouse cerebral cortex by magnetic-activated cell sorting, and the gene expression was determined by quantitative PCR. JWH 133 administration significantly decreased reactive astrocyte markers and microglial C1q, an inducer for the reactive astrocytes in AppNL-G-F/NL-G-F mice. In addition, JWH133 administration inhibited the expression of p-STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3) in astrocytes in AppNL-G-F/NL-G-F mice. Furthermore, JWH 133 administration suppressed dystrophic presynaptic terminals surrounding amyloid plaques. In conclusion, stimulation of microglial CB2 ameliorates cognitive dysfunction in AppNL-G-F/NL-G-F mice by controlling astrocyte activation and inducing beneficial neuroinflammation, and our study has implications that CB2 may represent an attractive therapeutic target for the treatment of AD and perhaps other neurodegenerative diseases involving neuroinflammation.

Abstract
Disease may be both a cause and a consequence of stress, and physiological responses to infectious disease may involve stress coping mechanisms that have important fitness consequences. For example, glucocorticoid and glycemic responses may affect host fitness by altering resource allocation and use in hosts, and these responses may be affected by competing stressors. To better understand the factors that affect host responses to infection, we challenged the immune system of field-acclimatized pygmy rattlesnakes, Sistrurus miliarius, with a sterile antigen, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and measured the glucocorticoid and glycemic response in healthy non-reproductive snakes, snakes afflicted with an emerging mycosis (ophidiomycosis) and pregnant snakes. We hypothesized that LPS challenge would result in a glucocorticoid and glycemic response typical of the vertebrate acute phase response (APR), and therefore predicted that LPS challenge would result in an acute increase in plasma corticosterone (CORT) and a decline in plasma glucose in all individuals. Additionally, we hypothesized that the APR would be attenuated in individuals simultaneously coping with additional challenges to homeostasis (i.e. disease or reproduction). As predicted, the immune challenge elicited an acute increase in plasma CORT and a decrease in plasma glucose. Snakes coping with ophidiomycosis and pregnant snakes were able to mount a robust glucocorticoid and hypoglycemic response to LPS challenge, which was contrary to our hypothesis. Our findings clarify directions of causality linking infection, glucocorticoids and glucose, and emphasize the importance of future research examining the fitness consequences of interactions between stress and disease in wildlife threatened by emerging pathogens.

Abstract
Black women are disproportionately impacted by mental health conditions, like depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance use harms. Experiences of discrimination may cause and exacerbate these conditions, but little is known about how distinct types of discrimination (overt vs. subtle) may be related to these outcomes. The current study sought to evaluate the associations between overt and subtle discrimination, mental health, and substance misuse outcomes among Black women. Data were drawn from ESSENCE, a retrospective cohort study (2013-2018) on sexual assault and HIV risk among Black women attending sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in Baltimore, Maryland (n = 199). Multivariable Poisson regression models tested the associations between overt and subtle discrimination, depressive and PTSD symptoms, and substance misuse while controlling for covariates. Nearly half (42.2%) of participants reported depressive symptoms, and over a third reported severe PTSD symptoms (35.2%). Higher levels of subtle discrimination were associated with increased risk of depressive symptoms (adjusted relative risk [aRR] = 1.32, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16, 1.50, p < .0001), whereas higher levels of overt discrimination were associated with increased risk of severe PTSD symptoms (aRR = 1.22, 95% CI [1.02, 1.46], p = .0287). Neither overt nor subtle discrimination was significantly associated with hazardous alcohol use or daily marijuana use in adjusted models. We identified that subtle discrimination has a unique negative association with depressive symptoms, while overt discrimination is positively associated with PTSD symptoms. This information is critical for tailoring stigma reduction interventions and mental health supports for Black women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Syrian hamsters are a relatively common pet species in the UK. However, we know very little about how they are kept. The aim of this study was to identify areas of good and poor practices among Syrian hamster owners using owner surveys. METHOD A survey of pet hamster owners was conducted with questions on husbandry, behaviour and health. RESULTS There were 548 survey responses. Over 95% of the owners provided a wheel, hideaway or chew toy, and over 90% housed their hamster alone. However, 18.4% of the owners used hamster balls, hamsters may have been fed a diet that was not entirely appropriate, and over 45% of respondents reported that their hamsters were housed in close proximity to predator species. Most (65.9%) hamsters had never been taken to a veterinarian. Hamster ball use, shallower substrate depth and more frequent handling were significantly associated with greater owner observations of bar biting. LIMITATIONS A key limitation is that the respondents may not be representative of the average pet hamster owner, so this research does not provide a complete picture of the current state of hamster welfare. CONCLUSION There are some welfare concerns regarding the way Syrian hamsters are currently kept in the UK. Therefore, attempts to better distribute information about hamster care to owners should be made.

Abstract
In many animal species, including most birds, parental care is performed by both parents, which has important implications for mate choice (good parent hypothesis) and parental investment strategies. Partitioning the variance in measures of parental care into heritable and nonheritable components is important to understand the evolvability of parental investment and its potential role in mate choice. We employed an automated system to monitor provisioning behavior at 817 blue tit nests over 10 years (totaling ~3 million visits). Daily provisioning rates of males and females were moderately repeatable between years (Radj = 0.16 and 0.15, respectively), which was almost entirely explained by additive genetic effects. While this degree of heritability is sufficient for parental investment to respond to selection, we argue that the modest level of repeatability provides limited potential for a "provisioning phenotype" to be used as a criterion in mate choice. Daily visit rates were positively correlated between pair members, but after accounting for shared environmental factors, this relationship became clearly negative, thereby providing support for models of partial compensation. Visit rates also differed substantially between years, and between days within a year. Thus, it is important to account for these variables when comparing the parental investment between individuals. Our results highlight the interplay between genetic, social, and environmental influences on provisioning behavior.

Abstract
The emergence of multiethnolects, i.e. specific speaking styles or varieties associated with second and third generation speakers from immigrant backgrounds, has been observed and studied in several major cities in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The multiethnolect that is the focus of this study is one such variety of colloquial German. Most previous research on multiethnolectal German has focused on grammatical features. This paper reports on the first comprehensive study of the vowel system (vowel quality and global vowel space size) of multiethnolectal German, based on data from Stuttgart. The results show that the vowel space of multiethnolectal speakers is in generally more centralized than that of a comparison group. A more detailed analysis reveals that the linguistic background plays an important role, as speakers with a Turkish or South Slavonic language background are responsible for this effect.

Abstract
Germline de novo mutations (DNMs) provide the raw material for evolution. The DNM rate varies considerably between species, sexes and chromosomes. Here, we identify DNMs in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) across 16 parent-offspring trios using two genome assemblies of different quality. Using an independent genotyping assay, we validate 82% of the 150 candidate DNMs. DNM rates are consistent between both assemblies, with estimates of 6.14 × 10-9 and 6.36 × 10-9 per site per generation. We observe a strong paternal bias in DNM rates (male-to-female ratio ɑ ≈ 4), but this bias is in transition mutations only, leading to a transition-to-transversion ratio of 3.18 and 3.57. Finally, we find that DNMs tend to be randomly distributed across chromosomes, not associated with recombination hotspots or genic regions. However, the sex chromosome chrZ shows a roughly fourfold increased DNM rate compared to autosomes, which is more than the expected increase due to chrZ spending two-thirds of its time in males. Overall, our results further enhance our understanding of DNMs in passerine songbirds.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common type of arthritis among children. It can cause joint pain and permanent physical damage, which affects mobility and daily activities. The EQ-5D-Y-3L self-report version has been validated in JIA, but the validity of EQ-5D-Y-5L remains unknown. We examined the psychometric properties of the EQ-5D-Y-5L parent-proxy version among children with JIA. METHODS We used data from the Understanding Childhood Arthritis Network Canadian-Dutch collaboration study cohort, including patients with new-onset JIA, and those starting or stopping biologics. Clinical data and the parent-proxy version of the childhood health assessment questionnaire (CHAQ) and EQ-5D-Y-5L were collected. We evaluated the ceiling and floor effect; convergent and divergent validity using Spearman's rank correlation; known-group validity using one-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) and effect size; and informativity using Shannon's evenness index. RESULTS 467 patient visits representing 407 patients were analyzed. The EQ-5D-Y-5L had no ceiling/floor effect. The EQ-5D-Y-5L showed good convergent (e.g., EQ-5D-Y-5L pain/discomfort dimension vs. CHAQ pain index (Spearman's r = 0.74, 95% confidence interval (C.I.): 0.69-0.79)), divergent (e.g., EQ-5D-Y-5L pain/discomfort dimension vs. CHAQ eating dimension (Spearman's r = 0.19, 95% C.I.: 0.09-0.29)) and known-group validity (e.g., mean EQ-5D-Y-5L level summary score for patients with inactive versus active disease status, 6.34 vs. 10.52 (p < 0.001, effect size = 1.20 (95% C.I.: 0.95-1.45)). Shannon's evenness index ranged from 0.52 to 0.88, suggesting most dimensions had relatively even distributions. CONCLUSIONS In this patient sample, EQ-5D-Y-5L parent-proxy version exhibited construct validity and informativity, suggesting the EQ-5D-Y-5L can be used to measure the quality of life of children with JIA.

Abstract
Chemotherapy induced ovarian failure and infertility is an important concern in female cancer patients of reproductive age or younger, and non-invasive, pharmacological approaches to maintain ovarian function are urgently needed. Given the role of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) as an essential cofactor for drug detoxification, we sought to test whether boosting the NAD(P)+ metabolome could protect ovarian function. We show that pharmacological or transgenic strategies to replenish the NAD+ metabolome ameliorates chemotherapy induced female infertility in mice, as measured by oocyte yield, follicle health, and functional breeding trials. Importantly, treatment of a triple-negative breast cancer mouse model with the NAD+ precursor nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) reduced tumour growth and did not impair the efficacy of chemotherapy drugs in vivo or in diverse cancer cell lines. Overall, these findings raise the possibility that NAD+ precursors could be a non-invasive strategy for maintaining ovarian function in cancer patients, with potential benefits in cancer therapy.

Abstract
Regression analysis is a powerful tool in adsorption studies. Researchers often favor linear regression for its simplicity when fitting isotherm models, such as the Langmuir equation. Validating regression assumptions is crucial to ensure that the model accurately represents the data and allows appropriate inferences. This study provides a detailed examination of assumption checking in the context of adsorption studies while simultaneously evaluating the robustness of linear regression methods for fitting the Langmuir equation to isotherm data from 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP) adsorption onto various biomass-based adsorbents and activated carbon. Different linearized Langmuir equations (Hanes-Woolf, Lineweaver-Burk, Eadie-Hofstee, and Scatchard) were compared to nonlinear regression, and each method was validated by rigorous residual checking. This included visual plots of residuals as well as statistical tests, including the Durbin-Watson test for autocorrelation (independence), the Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, and the White test for homoscedasticity. Key findings indicate that the Hanes-Woolf (type 1) and Lineweaver-Burk (type 2) linearizations were the best for most biomass adsorbents studied and that Eadie-Hofstee (type 3) and Scatchard (type 4) were generally invalid due to the negative parameters or assumption violations. For activated carbon, all linearization methods were unsuitable due to independence violations. In the case of nonlinear regression, there were no major assumption violations for all of the adsorbents. Symbolic regression identified the Langmuir equation only for activated carbon (AC). This study revealed shortcomings in relying solely on linearized Langmuir models. A proposed workflow recommends using nonlinear or weighted nonlinear regression, starting with Hanes-Woolf or Lineweaver-Burk linearization results as initial values for parameter estimation. If assumptions remain violated with nonlinear techniques, novel methods such as symbolic regression should be employed. This advanced regression technique can improve adsorption models' accuracy and predictive behavior without the stringent need for assumption checking. Symbolic regression can also aid in understanding mechanisms of novel adsorbents.

Abstract
Despite the global presence of social media platforms, the reasons why people like and share content are still poorly understood. We investigate how group identity mentions and expressions of ingroup solidarity and outgroup hostility in posts correlate with engagement on Ukrainian social media (i.e., shares, likes, and other reactions) before and after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. We use a dataset of 1.6 million posts from Ukrainian news source pages on Facebook and Twitter (currently X) and a geolocated sample of 149 thousand Ukrainian tweets. Before the 2022 Russian invasion, we observe that outgroup mentions in posts from news source pages are generally more strongly associated with engagement than negative, positive, and moral-emotional language. After the invasion, social identity mentions become less strongly associated with engagement. Moreover, post-invasion ingroup solidarity posts are strongly related to engagement, whereas posts expressing outgroup hostility show smaller associations. This is the case for both news and non-news social media data. Our correlational results suggest that signaling solidarity with one's ingroup online is associated with more engagement than negativity about outgroups during intense periods of intergroup conflicts, at least in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Abstract
Chronic stress can change how we learn and, thus, how we make decisions. Here we investigated the neuronal circuit mechanisms that enable this. Using a multifaceted systems neuroscience approach in male and female mice, we reveal a dual pathway, amygdala-striatal neuronal circuit architecture by which a recent history of chronic stress disrupts the action-outcome learning underlying adaptive agency and promotes the formation of inflexible habits. We found that the basolateral amygdala projection to the dorsomedial striatum is activated by rewarding events to support the action-outcome learning needed for flexible, goal-directed decision making. Chronic stress attenuates this to disrupt action-outcome learning and, therefore, agency. Conversely, the central amygdala projection to the dorsomedial striatum mediates habit formation. Following stress this pathway is progressively recruited to learning to promote the premature formation of inflexible habits. Thus, stress exerts opposing effects on two amygdala-striatal pathways to disrupt agency and promote habit. These data provide neuronal circuit insights into how chronic stress shapes learning and decision making, and help understand how stress can lead to the disrupted decision making and pathological habits that characterize substance use disorders and mental health conditions.

Abstract
The transition to adolescence is a critical period for mental health development. Socio-experiential environments play an important role in the emergence of depressive symptoms with some adolescents showing more sensitivity to social contexts than others. Drawing on recent developmental neuroscience advances, we examined whether hippocampal volume amplifies social context effects in the transition to adolescence. We analyzed 2-y longitudinal data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD®) study in a diverse sample of 11,832 youth (mean age: 9.914 y; range: 8.917 to 11.083 y; 47.8% girls) from 21 sites across the United States. Socio-experiential environments (i.e., family conflict, primary caregiver's depressive symptoms, parental warmth, peer victimization, and prosocial school environment), hippocampal volume, and a wide range of demographic characteristics were measured at baseline. Youth's symptoms of major depressive disorder were assessed at both baseline and 2 y later. Multilevel mixed-effects linear regression analyses showed that negative social environments (i.e., family conflict, primary caregiver's depressive symptoms, and peer victimization) and the absence of positive social environments (i.e., parental warmth and prosocial school environment) predicted greater increases in youth's depressive symptoms over 2 y. Importantly, left hippocampal volume amplified social context effects such that youth with larger left hippocampal volume experienced greater increases in depressive symptoms in more negative and less positive social environments. Consistent with brain-environment interaction models of mental health, these findings underscore the importance of families, peers, and schools in the development of depression during the transition to adolescence and show how neural structure amplifies social context sensitivity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study analyzed the human maxilla to support the development of mean-value-based cutting guide systems for maxillary reconstruction, bridging the gap between freehand techniques and virtual surgical planning (VSP). MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective cohort study used routine CT scans. DICOM data enabled 3D modelling and the maxilla was divided into four regions: paranasal (R1), facial maxillary sinus wall (R2), zygomatic bone (R3) and alveolar process (R4). Surface comparisons were made with a reference skull. Statistical analyses assessed anatomical variations, focusing on mean distance (Dmean), area of valid distance (AVD), integrated distance (ID) and integrated absolute distance (IAD). The study addressed hemimaxillectomy defects for two-segmental reconstructions using seven defined bilateral points to determine segmental distances and angles. RESULTS Data from 50 patients showed R2 as the most homogeneous and R4 as the most heterogeneous region. Significant age and gender differences were found in R3 and R4, with younger patients and females having more outliers. Cluster analysis indicated that males had R1 and R3 positioned anterior to the reference skull. The mean angle for segmental reconstruction was 131.24° ± 1.29°, with anterior segment length of 30.71 ± 0.57 mm and posterior length of 28.15 ± 0.86 mm. CONCLUSIONS Anatomical analysis supported the development of semistandardized segmental resection approaches. Although gender and anatomical differences were noted, they did not significantly impact the feasibility of mean-value-based cutting-guide systems. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study provides essential anatomical data for creating cost-effective and efficient reconstruction options for maxillary defects, potentially improving surgical outcomes and expanding reconstructive possibilities beyond current techniques.

Abstract
This online experimental study investigates the effects of the social media trends "fitspiration" (images of thin-muscular women promoting health and fitness), "body positivity" (images of larger female bodies motivating women to love their bodies), and "body neutrality" (illustrations encouraging women to appreciate the body's functions) on body dissatisfaction and affect in women with and without eating disorders (ED). Women with (n = 172) and women without ED (n = 210) were randomly assigned to the conditions "fitspiration", "body positivity", and text-based "body neutrality", each comprising the presentation of 30 Instagram posts. Before and after viewing the posts, participants answered state questionnaires on body dissatisfaction and affect. The results revealed that body dissatisfaction increased after viewing "fitspiration" images and decreased after viewing "body positivity" and text-based "body neutrality" posts. Positive affect decreased following exposure to "fitspiration" and text-based "body neutrality" but remained unchanged following "body positivity". Negative affect decreased following "body positivity" and text-based "body neutrality" content but did not change following exposure to "fitspiration". There was no differential effect on women with versus without ED. This study demonstrates harmful effects of "fitspiration" on body image and affect, indicating the need for prevention programs for both women with and without ED.

Abstract
Geoffroy's spider monkeys, an endangered, fast-moving arboreal primate species with a large home range and a high degree of fission-fusion dynamics, are challenging to survey in their natural habitats. Our objective was to evaluate how different flight parameters affect the detectability of spider monkeys in videos recorded by a drone equipped with a thermal infrared camera and examine the level of agreement between coders. We used generalized linear mixed models to evaluate the impact of flight speed (2, 4, 6 m/s), flight height (40, 50 m above ground level), and camera angle (-45°, -90°) on spider monkey counts in a closed-canopy forest in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Our results indicate that none of the three flight parameters affected the number of detected spider monkeys. Agreement between coders was "substantial" (Fleiss' kappa coefficient = 0.61-0.80) in most cases for high thermal-contrast zones. Our study contributes to the development of standardized flight protocols, which are essential to obtain accurate data on the presence and abundance of wild populations. Based on our results, we recommend performing drone surveys for spider monkeys and other medium-sized arboreal mammals with a small commercial drone at a 4 m/s speed, 15 m above canopy height, and with a -90° camera angle. However, these recommendations may vary depending on the size and noise level produced by the drone model.

Abstract
This survey rigorously explores contemporary clustering algorithms within the machine learning paradigm, focusing on five primary methodologies: centroid-based, hierarchical, density-based, distribution-based, and graph-based clustering. Through the lens of recent innovations such as deep embedded clustering and spectral clustering, we analyze the strengths, limitations, and the breadth of application domains-ranging from bioinformatics to social network analysis. Notably, the survey introduces novel contributions by integrating clustering techniques with dimensionality reduction and proposing advanced ensemble methods to enhance stability and accuracy across varied data structures. This work uniquely synthesizes the latest advancements and offers new perspectives on overcoming traditional challenges like scalability and noise sensitivity, thus providing a comprehensive roadmap for future research and practical applications in data-intensive environments.

Abstract
We adapted the percentage intensity approach to monitor accelerations and decelerations allowing players' individualisation. Forty-two players were monitored during four microcycles via global navigation satellite system devices. Raw velocity and time data were collected to calculate acceleration and deceleration magnitudes according to specific starting speed intervals, and the efforts intensities were established as very low (<25% of the maximal effort), low (25-50%), moderate (50-75%) and high (>75%). Linear regressions and Pearson correlation (r) analysed the relationship between maximal efforts and starting speeds; additionally, mean paired differences compared efforts magnitudes between subsequent starting speed intervals. Most very low intensity accelerations (86%) and decelerations (79%) started from <5 km.h-1. Correlation between maximal efforts and starting speeds were r = -0.97 (p < .001) for acceleration, and r = -0.94 (p < .01) for deceleration. Maximal acceleration decreased as starting speed increases (very large effect sizes), but deceleration is less starting speed dependent (unclear to large effect sizes). This adaptation allows practitioners to individualise accelerations and decelerations classification during real-life scenarios, leading to a more precise training prescription. The very low intensity interval could be excluded to consider only relevant efforts. Maximal acceleration should be collected for each starting speed interval because accelerations are starting speed dependents.

Abstract
Integrating algae into constructed wetlands (CWs) enhances wastewater treatment, although the results vary. This review evaluates the role of algae in CWs and the performance of different algae-CW (A-CW) configurations based on literature and meta-analysis. Algae considerably improve N removal, although their impact on other parameters varies. Statistical analysis revealed that 70 % of studies report improved treatment efficiencies with A-CWs, achieving average removal rates of 75 % for chemical oxygen demand (COD), 74 % for total nitrogen and ammonium nitrogen, and 79 % for total phosphorus (TP). This review identifies hydraulic retention times, which average 3.1 days, and their varied impact on treatment efficacy. Mixed-effects models showed a slight increase in COD and TP removal efficiencies of 0.6 % every ten days in the A-CWs. Future research should focus on robust experimental designs, adequate algal storage and separation techniques, and advanced modeling to optimize the treatment potential of algae in CWs.

Abstract
The navigational mechanisms of homing pigeons, Columba livia, have been extensively studied and represent a useful model for the navigation of birds and other animals. Pigeons navigate with an olfactory map and sun compass from unfamiliar areas and, in familiar areas, are largely guided by visual landscape cues, following stereotyped and idiosyncratic routes. However, the mechanisms by which they gain familiarity, improve their navigation and transition between navigational strategies during learning are not fully understood. Addressing these outstanding questions in this navigational model will help to improve our understanding of navigational ontogeny. We sought to investigate whether passive exposure to the cues at a site, without release, was sufficient for navigational learning, given that pigeons can determine the home direction before taking off. We exposed pigeons to cues at a novel site before returning them to the site the next day and releasing them alongside controls. We found no differences in the directional distributions, mean vector lengths, virtual vanishing times, efficiency indices or homing efficiency indices between birds that had and had not previously visited the site. We therefore found no evidence to suggest that passive exposure to the cues at a novel site was sufficient to facilitate a detectable improvement in navigational performance. There are three possible explanations for this result: first, a larger sample size would have detected a weak effect of learning; second, passive exposure to a release site is insufficient to generate navigational learning; and third, pigeons learn from passive exposure but do not rely upon this information, showing no difference in performance, despite learning. We discuss these three explanations with reference to previous findings on navigational learning in homing pigeons. We suggest that experiments should continue to examine navigational ontogeny in homing pigeons to help address this major problem for the field of navigation.

Abstract
While sheep can detect and discriminate human emotions through visual and vocal cues, their reaction to human body odors remains unknown. The present study aimed to determine whether sheep (Ovis aries) can detect human odors, olfactorily discriminate stressed from non-stressed individuals, and behave accordingly based on the emotional valence of the odors. Axillary secretions from 34 students were collected following an oral examination (stress odor) or a regular class (non-stress odor). Fourteen female and 15 male lambs were then exposed to these odors through a habituation-dishabituation procedure. The habituation stimulus was presented four times for one minute, followed by the dishabituation stimulus presented once for one minute. Behavioral variables included spatiality relative to target odors, approach/withdrawal, ear positioning, sniffing, ingestion, and vocalization. Both female and male lambs more often positioned their ears backwards/forwards, and asymmetrically when exposed to the dishabituation stimulus, but regardless of their stress or non-stress value. They also changed their approach behavior when exposed to the dishabituation stimuli. Lambs displayed some behavioral signs of discrimination between the habituation and dishabituation odors, but regardless of their relation to stress or non-stress of human donors. In sum, this exploratory study suggests that young sheep respond negatively to the odor of unfamiliar humans, without showing any specific emotional contagion related to the stress odor. This exploratory study suggests young ovines can detect human body odor, a further step toward understanding the human-sheep relationship.

Abstract
PURPOSE Mental health problems (MHPs) are subjected to workplace stigma and can deteriorate into common mental disorders (CMDs) and sickness absence (SA). Research has shown that personal stigmatizing attitudes limit managers' efforts towards employees with MHPs, but knowledge is lacking regarding stigma in social contexts (contextual stigma) and different types of possible preventive actions. This study investigates personal stigmatizing attitudes and three contextual stigma layers (employee, collegial, organizational) and different types of possible actions to prevent SA of employees with MHPs. METHOD Survey data of 2769 Swedish managers working in the private sector were analysed. Personal stigmatizing attitudes were measured with the managerial stigma towards employee depression scale and supplemented with four additional items capturing contextual stigma. Managers watched video vignettes and assessed which preventive actions (n = 20) were possible to use in their organization. A sum score was calculated reflecting the 'number of actions'. Principal component analysis revealed three action types: adapt tasks and setting, involve experts, and social support. A score reflecting the 'possibilities to implement actions' was calculated for each type. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted with the four stigma layers as independent variables for each of the three action variables. RESULTS Personal stigmatizing attitudes and contextual stigma were significantly associated with both 'number of actions' and 'possibilities for implementing actions' relating to all action types. Patterns of associations with contextual stigma were significant but varied between the different action types. CONCLUSION This study substantiated the role of personal stigmatizing attitudes and contextual stigma in relation to possible actions of managers to prevent SA of employees with MHPs. The results emphasize the role of contextual stigma. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

Abstract
Personality is a central concept and a cross-domain explanatory factor in psychology to characterize and differentiate individuals. Surprisingly, among the many studies on oculomotor behavior, only a few have investigated how personality influences the exploration of a visual stimulus. Due to the limited number of existing studies, it is still uncertain if markers of personality in eye movements are always observable in eye movements across various exploration contexts. Here, introducing a novel concept of gaze-based signatures of personality, we used visual exploration metrics to detect personality signatures across various exploration contexts (visual search and free-viewing on images and webpages) in 91 participants. Personality data were collected as in the reference paper that validated the French version of the Big Five Inventory. Linear regression analyses demonstrated that while Extraversion and Openness to Experience did not correlate with any particular exploration metric, the other three traits-Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism-correlated robustly with all exploration metrics in different visual exploration contexts. Our study provides evidence for the capture of the gaze-based signature of personality from very brief eye movement recordings.

Abstract
INTRO The relationship between suicide ideation (SI) and distress tolerance (DT) is characterized by inconclusive results. The current study aimed to test the association between tolerance for interpersonal distress and SI in light of the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide. METHODS 194 participants ranging in SI severity were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk and completed a cognitive distress task (Distress Tolerance Task) and an interpersonal distress task (CyberBall) to assess (1) the association between SI severity and persistence with the tasks, and (2) self-reported psychological distress associated with the tasks. RESULTS A series of multilevel model analyses showed that increased SI predicted greater persistence with the interpersonal-distress task versus the cognitive distress task. In addition, higher SI predicted more distress during the interpersonal task. CONCLUSIONS Individuals with higher SI levels demonstrated a greater capability to persist with the interpersonal distress, despite feeling psychologically worse. These findings further support the central role of interpersonal needs in SI by emphasizing the importance of operationalizing DT in a manner that is relevant to suicide desire.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine if blood prestin level changes after exposure to music at high sound pressure levels, and if this change is associated with temporary threshold shift (TTS) and/or changes in distortion product (DP) amplitude. DESIGN Participants were exposed to pop-rock music at 100 dBA for 15 min monaurally through headphones. Pure-tone audiometry, DP amplitude, and blood prestin level were measured before and after exposure. RESULTS Fourteen adults (9 women; age range: 20 to 54 years, median age = 31 [Interquartile ratio = 6.75]) with normal hearing were included in the study. Mean prestin level increased shortly after exposure to music, then returned to baseline within 1 week, although this trend was not observed in all participants. All participants presented TTS or a decrease in DP amplitude in at least one frequency after music exposure. There was a statistically significant average threshold elevation at 4 min postexposure. Statistically significant DP amplitude shifts were observed at 4 and 6 kHz, 2 min following exposure. Mean baseline serum prestin level (mean: 140.00 pg/mL, 95% confidence interval (CI): 125.92 to 154.07) progressively increased following music exposure, reaching a maximum at 2 hr (mean: 158.29 pg/mL, 95% CI: 130.42 to 186.66) and returned to preexposure level at 1 week (mean: 139.18 pg/mL, 95% CI: 114.69 to 163.68). However, after correction for multiple comparisons, mean prestin level showed no statistically significant increase from baseline at any timepoint. No correlation between maximum blood prestin level change and average TTS or distortion product otoacoustic emission amplitude shift was found. However, in an exploratory analysis, TTS at 6 kHz (the frequency at which maximum TTS occurred) decreased significantly as baseline blood prestin level increased. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that blood prestin level may change after exposure to music at high sound pressure levels, although statistical significance was not reached in this relatively small sample after correction. Baseline serum prestin level may also predict the degree of TTS. These findings thus suggest that the role of baseline serum prestin level as a proxy marker of cochlear susceptibility to intense music exposure should be further explored.

Abstract
Growing evidence indicates that human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are important bioactive compounds that enhance health and developmental outcomes in breastfed babies. Maternal dietary intake likely contributes to variation in HMO composition, but studies identifying diet-HMO relationships are few and inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate how the maternal intake of macronutrients and micronutrients-specifically proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals-associated with HMOs at 1 month (n = 210), 6 months (n = 131), and 12 months postpartum (n = 84). Several associations between maternal dietary factors and HMO profiles were identified utilizing partial correlation analysis. For example, maternal free sugar (rho = -0.02, p < 0.01), added sugar (rho = -0.22, p < 0.01), and sugary sweetened beverage (rho = -0.22, p < 0.01) intake were negatively correlated with the most abundant HMO, 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL), at 1 month, suggesting that higher sugar consumption was associated with reduced levels of 2'-FL. Further, vitamins D, C, K, and the minerals zinc and potassium were positively correlated with 2'-FL at 1 month (pAll < 0.05). For the longitudinal analysis, a mixed-effects linear regression model revealed significant associations between maternal vitamin intake and HMO profiles over time. For example, for each unit increase in niacin intake, there was a 31.355 nmol/mL increase in 2'-FL concentration (p = 0.03). Overall, the results provide additional evidence supporting a role for maternal nutrition in shaping HMO profiles, which may inform future intervention strategies with the potential of improving infant growth and development through optimal HMO levels in mothers' milk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A major goal of contemporary obstetrical practice is to optimize fetal growth and development throughout pregnancy. To date, fetal growth during prenatal care is assessed by performing ultrasonographic measurement of 2-dimensional fetal biometry to calculate an estimated fetal weight. Our group previously established 2-dimensional fetal growth standards using sonographic data from a large cohort with multiple sonograms. A separate objective of that investigation involved the collection of fetal volumes from the same cohort. OBJECTIVE The Fetal 3D Study was designed to establish standards for fetal soft tissue and organ volume measurements by 3-dimensional ultrasonography and compare growth trajectories with conventional 2-dimensional measures where applicable. STUDY DESIGN The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Fetal 3D Study included research-quality images of singletons collected in a prospective, racially and ethnically diverse, low-risk cohort of pregnant individuals at 12 U.S. sites, with up to 5 scans per fetus (N=1730 fetuses). Abdominal subcutaneous tissue thickness was measured from 2-dimensional images and fetal limb soft tissue parameters extracted from 3-dimensional multiplanar views. Cerebellar, lung, liver, and kidney volumes were measured using virtual organ computer aided analysis. Fractional arm and thigh total volumes, and fractional lean limb volumes were measured, with fractional limb fat volume calculated by subtracting lean from total. For each measure, weighted curves (fifth, 50th, 95th percentiles) were derived from 15 to 41 weeks' using linear mixed models for repeated measures with cubic splines. RESULTS Subcutaneous thickness of the abdomen, arm, and thigh increased linearly, with slight acceleration around 27 to 29 weeks. Fractional volumes of the arm, thigh, and lean limb volumes increased along a quadratic curvature, with acceleration around 29 to 30 weeks. In contrast, growth patterns for 2-dimensional humerus and femur lengths demonstrated a logarithmic shape, with fastest growth in the second trimester. The mid-arm area curve was similar in shape to fractional arm volume, with an acceleration around 30 weeks, whereas the curve for the lean arm area was more gradual. The abdominal area curve was similar to the mid-arm area curve with an acceleration around 29 weeks. The mid-thigh and lean area curves differed from the arm areas by exhibiting a deceleration at 39 weeks. The growth curves for the mid-arm and thigh circumferences were more linear. Cerebellar 2-dimensional diameter increased linearly, whereas cerebellar 3-dimensional volume growth gradually accelerated until 32 weeks followed by a more linear growth. Lung, kidney, and liver volumes all demonstrated gradual early growth followed by a linear acceleration beginning at 25 weeks for lungs, 26 to 27 weeks for kidneys, and 29 weeks for liver. CONCLUSION Growth patterns and timing of maximal growth for 3-dimensional lean and fat measures, limb and organ volumes differed from patterns revealed by traditional 2-dimensional growth measures, suggesting these parameters reflect unique facets of fetal growth. Growth in these three-dimensional measures may be altered by genetic, nutritional, metabolic, or environmental influences and pregnancy complications, in ways not identifiable using corresponding 2-dimensional measures. Further investigation into the relationships of these 3-dimensional standards to abnormal fetal growth, adverse perinatal outcomes, and health status in postnatal life is warranted.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Previous literature has indicated an association between participant-reported perceptions (e.g., ratings) of comfort, dryness and vision quality during soft contact lens wear. However, these reports do not account for participant- and lens-specific factors which may impact the interpretation of these results. The purpose of this project was to quantify the association between these participant-reported ratings while accounting for both participant- and lens-specific factors. METHODS Participant-reported ratings (scale 0-100) of comfort, dryness and quality of vision for 675 soft contact lens wearers (1207 eyes) were aggregated across 31 studies completed at Indiana University. Linear mixed-effects regression modelling was performed on each outcome rating individually. Covariate-adjusted models incorporated both participant- (e.g., age, sex) and lens-related (e.g., lens material, edge and optics) factors. The models were statistically adjusted for the duration of lens wear in hours and cumulative days of exposure. RESULTS Consistent with estimates from covariate-adjusted regression models, pairwise Spearman correlations [95% CI] between dryness and comfort (rs = 0.71, [0.69, 0.74]), vision quality and comfort (rs = 0.53, [0.49, 0.57]) and vision quality and dryness (rs = 0.49, [0.42, 0.54]) were all positive and had p < 0.001. Average participant-reported ratings of comfort, dryness and vision quality decreased by (bs [95% CI]) = -0.81 [-1.15, -0.46] -0.34 [-0.67, 0.0005] and -0.90 [-1.19, -0.60] rating units, respectively, for each hour of lens wear. CONCLUSIONS Significant positive associations were found between participant-reported measures of comfort, dryness and vision quality during soft contact lens wear. The associations between these ratings and the participant- and lens-related factors that drive them should be considered by clinicians and manufacturers when fitting and designing soft contact lenses.

Abstract
Chromosomal inversions are structural mutations that can play a prominent role in adaptation and speciation. Inversions segregating across species boundaries (trans-species inversions) are often taken as evidence for ancient balancing selection or adaptive introgression, but can also be due to incomplete lineage sorting. Using whole-genome resequencing data from 18 populations of 11 recognized munia species in the genus Lonchura (N = 176 individuals), we identify four large para- and pericentric inversions ranging in size from 4 to 20 Mb. All four inversions cosegregate across multiple species and predate the numerous speciation events associated with the rapid radiation of this clade across the prehistoric Sahul (Australia, New Guinea) and Bismarck Archipelago. Using coalescent theory, we infer that trans-specificity is improbable for neutrally segregating variation despite substantial incomplete lineage sorting characterizing this young radiation. Instead, the maintenance of all three autosomal inversions (chr1, chr5, and chr6) is best explained by selection acting along ecogeographic clines not observed for the collinear parts of the genome. In addition, the sex chromosome inversion largely aligns with species boundaries and shows signatures of repeated positive selection for both alleles. This study provides evidence for trans-species inversion polymorphisms involved in both adaptation and speciation. It further highlights the importance of informing selection inference using a null model of neutral evolution derived from the collinear part of the genome.

Abstract
Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) have demonstrated multifaceted pharmacological effects. In addition to type 2 diabetes, they are now indicated for heart failure and chronic kidney disease. This study aimed to identify novel associations between SGLT2i use and health outcomes using real-world data. Using linked data from a nationwide diabetes registry in Australia, we compared hospitalization rates in people living with type 2 diabetes commencing treatment with SGLT2i and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor (DPP4i) between December 1, 2013, and June 30, 2019. Cause-specific hospitalizations were categorized across three hierarchies of diagnoses (first, first three, and first four digits of International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Version, Australian Modification codes). Incidence rate ratio (IRR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for each cause-specific hospitalization were estimated using negative binomial regression. In the first hierarchy, hospitalization rates were lower across most diagnosis groups among SGLT2i initiators (n = 99,569) compared with DPP4i initiators (n = 186,353). In the second and third hierarchies, there were lower hospitalization rates relating to infections, anemias, and obstructive airway diseases among SGLT2i initiators compared with DPP4i initiators. These included sepsis (IRR: 0.60, 95% CI: 0.51-0.72) anemia (IRR: 0.55, 95% CI: 0.46-0.66), and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (IRR: 0.52, 95% CI: 0.40-0.68), as well as for previously known associations (e.g., heart failure (IRR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.56-0.70)). SGLT2is have previously uncharacterized associations on a range of important clinical outcomes; validation of these associations requires further study, some of which may suggest novel benefits or new indications for SGLT2is.

Abstract
A growing body of research suggests that sexual minority men (SMM) experience greater body image concerns including body shame, body surveillance, drive for muscularity and drive for thinness than heterosexual men. However, little is known regarding the potential factors that can buffer these relationships. The aim of the present study was to examine the role that both self-compassion and relationship status may play in decreasing the strength of the relationship between sexual minority status and body image concerns. A sample of n = 106 SMM and n = 145 heterosexual men completed an online survey assessing body image concerns, self-compassion, and relationship status. Findings revealed that SMM reported higher levels of body image concerns (on all measures, except drive for muscularity) as compared to heterosexual men. Self-compassion moderated the link between sexual orientation and drive for muscularity: in men with higher levels of self-compassion, sexual orientation was no longer associated with drive for muscularity. But, among men with less self-compassion, SMM reported higher drive for muscularity than heterosexual men. Moreover, relationship status moderated the relationship between sexual orientation and body shame and drive for thinness, such that, among SMM only, being in a relationship was associated with lower levels of these concerns.

Abstract
A common goal in chemistry is to study the relationship between a measured signal and the variability of certain factors. To this end, researchers often use Design of Experiment to decide which experiments to conduct and (Multiple) Linear Regression, and/or Analysis of Variance to analyze the collected data. Among the assumptions to the very foundation of this strategy, all the experiments are independent, conditional on the settings of the factors. Unfortunately, due to the presence of uncontrollable factors, real-life experiments often deviate from this assumption, making the data analysis results unreliable. In these cases, Mixed-Effects modeling, despite not being widely used in chemometrics, represents a solid data analysis framework to obtain reliable results. Here we provide a tutorial for Linear Mixed-Effects models. We gently introduce the reader to these models by showing some motivating examples. Then, we discuss the theory behind Linear Mixed-Effect models, and we show how to fit these models by making use of real-life data obtained from an exposome study. Throughout the paper we provide R code so that each researcher is able to implement these useful model themselves.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Matrix Gla protein (MGP) is an inhibitor of calcification that requires carboxylation by vitamin K for activity. The inactive form of MGP, dephosphorylated-uncarboxylated matrix Gla protein (dp-ucMGP), has been associated with increased calcification. However, it is not known whether there is a longitudinal relationship between dephosphorylated-uncarboxylated matrix Gla protein levels and coronary and aortic calcification in large population cohorts. METHODS The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) followed participants with serial cardiac computed tomography (CT) measures of vascular calcification. Dp-ucMGP was measured at baseline in a subset of participants who completed baseline and follow-up CTs approximately 10 years later and had available plasma specimens (n = 2663). Linear mixed effects models (LMMs) were used to determine the association of dp-ucMGP with the simultaneous incidence and progression of coronary artery, ascending thoracic aortic, or descending thoracic aortic calcification (CAC, ATAC, DTAC)]. RESULTS For every one standard deviation (SD, 178 pmol/L) increment in dp-ucMGP, CAC increased by 3.44 ([95% CI = 1.68, 5.21], p < 0.001) Agatston units/year (AU/year), ATAC increased by 0.63 ([95% CI = 0.27, 0.98], p = 0.001) AU/year, and DTAC increased by 8.61 ([95% CI = 4.55, 12.67], p < 0.001) AU/year. The association was stronger for DTAC in those ≥65 years and with diabetes. CONCLUSIONS We found a positive association of the inactive form of matrix Gla protein, dp-ucMGP, and long-term incidence/progression of CAC, ATAC, and DTAC. Future studies should investigate dp-ucMGP as a calcification regulator and MGP as a possible therapeutic target to slow progression of calcification in the vasculature.

Abstract
Background & objectives Red cell concentrates (RCCs) must comply with applicable quality control (QC) standards to achieve the desired therapeutic effect in the recipient. In this study, we assessed the effect of change in the component preparation process on the quality of RCCs and their compliance with different QC standards. Methods A retrospective analysis of data for QC testing of RCCs over a period of 10 years, (from 2009 to 2019), was undertaken. QC testing parameters [volume, haematocrit (Hct), haemoglobin (Hb) content, white blood cell (WBC) content and percentage (%) haemolysis] were used to assess compliance with three national and three international QC standards. Linear regression analysis was done to assess the influence of donor variables. Results Data from 5,218 RCC units was included in the analysis. A majority (>50%) of RCCs prepared did not meet the three national QC standards either for volume or for Hct. The criteria for volume, Hct and Hb content, as defined in different international standards, were fulfilled by a majority (>75%) of RCCs evaluated. RCCs prepared by the buffy coat method had overall better compliance with QC standards compared to the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) method. The method of component preparation was found to influence Hb content, WBC content and percentage haemolysis. Male gender was associated with better Hb content. Interpretation & conclusions RCC prepared at our centre was found to have better compliance with international QC criteria compared to national standards. There is a need to reconsider the current national QC criteria for red cells with due consideration to the volume of whole blood collected and the method used for RCC preparation.

Abstract
Background: For indigenous people in Colombia, high infection rates with Chagas disease (CD) are known. Methods: In 2018 and 2020, nine villages were screened for CD. CD-positive patients could enter a drug observed treatment. While, in 2018, Benznidazole (BNZ) was provided as the first-line drug by the government, nifurtimox (NFX) was administered in 2020. Results: Of 121 individuals treated with BNZ, 79 (65%) suffered from at least one adverse event (AE). Of 115 treated with NFX, at least one AE occurred in 96 (84%) patients. In 69% of BNZ cases, the side effects did not last longer than one day; this applied to 31% of NFX cases. Excluding extreme outlier values, average duration of AEs differed highly significantly: BNZ (M = 0.7, SD = 1.4) and NFX (M = 1.7, SD = 1.5, p < 0.001). Using an intensity scale, AEs were highly significantly more severe for NFX (M = 2.1, SD = 0.58) compared to BZN (M = 1.1, SD = 0.38), p < 0.001. When analyzing the duration in relation to the intensity, the burden of AEs caused by NFX was significantly more pronounced. Dropouts (n = 2) due to AEs were in the NFX-group only. Conclusions: Side effects caused by BNZ were significantly fewer, as well as milder, shorter in duration, and more easily treatable, compared to NFX.

Abstract
To make adaptive decisions, we build an internal model of the associative relationships in an environment and use it to make predictions and inferences about specific available outcomes. Detailed, identity-specific cue-reward memories are a core feature of such cognitive maps. Here we used fiber photometry, cell-type and pathway-specific optogenetic manipulation, Pavlovian cue-reward conditioning and decision-making tests in male and female rats, to reveal that ventral tegmental area dopamine (VTADA) projections to the basolateral amygdala (BLA) drive the encoding of identity-specific cue-reward memories. Dopamine is released in the BLA during cue-reward pairing; VTADA→BLA activity is necessary and sufficient to link the identifying features of a reward to a predictive cue but does not assign general incentive properties to the cue or mediate reinforcement. These data reveal a dopaminergic pathway for the learning that supports adaptive decision-making and help explain how VTADA neurons achieve their emerging multifaceted role in learning.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the effectiveness of a supervised exercise training program (SETP) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and functional capacity in women with breast cancer (BC) undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS Ninety-three women with early-stage BC were randomly allocated to a SETP plus usual care (exercise, n = 47) or usual care alone (UC, n = 46). The SETP included three sessions per week, combining aerobic and resistance training, conducted concurrently over the chemotherapy. The EORTC Cancer Quality-of-Life-Questionnaire-Core-30 (QLQ-C30) and the BC-specific module (QLQ-BR23) were used to assess HRQoL. Functional capacity was analyzed by maximum voluntary handgrip strength (MVHS) and by the 30-s chair sit-to-stand test (30-s CST). These endpoints were assessed at baseline (t0); middle (t1; after 8 or 12 wk of t0); and at the end of chemotherapy (t2; after 20 wk of t0). Mean changes from baseline were assessed by an intention-to-treat approach. RESULTS Mixed linear model analyses showed that Exercise group experienced less deterioration in several domains of QLQ-C30 at t2, including in global health status/QoL (Δ = 9.39 units; P = 0.034), QLQ-C30 summary score (Δ = 8.08 units; P < 0.001), physical (Δ = 15.14 units; P < 0.001), role ( Δ = 21.81 units; P < 0.001), cognitive (Δ = 9.16 units; P = 0.032) and social functioning (Δ = 11.67 units; P = 0.038), compared with the UC group. Similarly, Exercise group exhibited significant lower levels of fatigue (Δ = -20.19 units; P < 0.001) and appetite loss (Δ = -13.69 units; P = 0.034), compared with the UC group. Significant between-group differences were observed on MVHS of the tumor/surgery upper limb side (Δ = 2.64 kg; P < 0.001) and contralateral limb (Δ = 2.22 kg; P < 0.001), and on the 30-s CST score (Δ = 3.56repetitions; P < 0.001), favoring the Exercise group. No differences were observed on QLQ-BR23 domains. CONCLUSIONS Exercise training was an effective complementary therapy to prevent the deterioration of HRQoL and functional capacity during chemotherapy in women with early-stage BC.
