Abstract
Nanoplastics are recognized as emerging contaminants that can cause severe toxicity to marine fishes. However, limited researches were focusing on the toxic effects of nanoplastics on marine fish, especially the post-exposure resilience. In this study, red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) were exposed to 5 mg/L polystyrene nanoplastics (100 nm, PS-NPs) for a 7-day exposure experiment, and a 14-day recovery experiment that followed. The aim was to evaluate the dynamic alterations in hepatic and branchial tissue damage, hepatic antioxidant capacity, as well as hepatic transcriptional and metabolic regulation in the red drum during exposure and post-exposure to PS-NPs. Histopathological observation found that PS-NPs primarily triggered hepatic lipid droplets and branchial epithelial liftings, a phenomenon persistently discernible up to the 14 days of recovery. Although antioxidant capacity partially recovered during recovery periods, PS-NPs resulted in a sustained reduction in hepatic antioxidant activity, causing oxidative damage throughout the entire exposure and recovery phases, as evidenced by decreased total superoxide dismutase activities and increased malondialdehyde content. At the transcriptional and metabolic level, PS-NPs primarily induced lipid metabolism disorders, DNA damage, biofilm disruption, and mitochondrial dysfunction. In the gene-metabolite correlation interaction network, numerous CcO (cytochrome c oxidase) family genes and lipid metabolites were identified as key regulatory genes and metabolites in detoxification processes. Among them, the red drum possesses one additional CcO6B in comparison to human and zebrafish, which potentially contributes to its enhanced capacity for maintaining a stable and positive regulatory function in detoxification. This study revealed that nanoplastics cause severe biotoxicity to red drum, which may be detrimental to the survival of wild populations and affect the economics of farmed populations.

Abstract
Background The relationships between heavy metals and fatty liver, especially the threshold values, have not been fully elucidated. The objective of this research was to further investigate the correlation between blood heavy metal exposures and the risk of Metabolic dysfunction Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) in adults. Methods Laboratory data on blood metal exposure levels were obtained from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data for the period 2015 to 2020 for a cross-sectional study in adults. Associations between blood levels of common heavy metals and the risk of MAFLD in adults were analyzed using multifactorial logistic regression and ranked for heavy metal importance using a random forest model. Finally, thresholds for important heavy metals were calculated using piecewise linear regression model. Results In a multifactorial logistic regression model, we found that elevated levels of selenium (Se) and manganese (Mn) blood exposure were strongly associated with the risk of MAFLD in adults. The random forest model importance ranking also found that Se and Mn blood exposure levels were in the top two positions of importance for the risk of disease in adults. The restricted cubic spline suggested a non-linear relationship between Se and Mn blood exposure and adult risk of disease. The OR (95% CI) for MAFLD prevalence was 3.936 (2.631-5.887) for every 1 unit increase in Log Mn until serum Mn levels rose to the turning point (Log Mn = 1.10, Mn = 12.61 μg/L). This correlation was not significant (p > 0.05) after serum Mn levels rose to the turning point. A similar phenomenon was observed for serum Se levels, with a turning point of (Log Se = 2.30, Se = 199.55 μg/L). Conclusion Blood heavy metals, especially Se and Mn, are significantly associated with MAFLD in adults. They have a non-linear relationship with a clear threshold.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our previous studies demonstrated that divalent organic iron (Fe) proteinate sources with higher complexation or chelation strengths as expressed by the greater quotient of formation (Qf) values displayed higher Fe bioavailabilities for broilers. Sodium iron ethylenediaminetetraacetate (NaFeEDTA) is a trivalent organic Fe source with the strongest chelating ligand EDTA. However, the bioavailability of Fe when administered as NaFeEDTA in broilers and other agricultural animals remains untested. Herein, the chemical characteristics of 12 NaFeEDTA products were determined. Of these, one feed grade NaFeEDTA (Qf = 2.07 × 108), one food grade NaFeEDTA (Qf = 3.31 × 108), and one Fe proteinate with an extremely strong chelation strength (Fe-Prot ES, Qf value = 8,590) were selected. Their bioavailabilities relative to Fe sulfate (FeSO4·7H2O) for broilers fed with a conventional corn-soybean meal diet were evaluated during d 1 to 21 by investigating the effects of the above Fe sources and added Fe levels on the growth performance, hematological indices, Fe contents, activities and gene expressions of Fe-containing enzymes in various tissues of broilers. RESULTS NaFeEDTA sources varied greatly in their chemical characteristics. Plasma Fe concentration (PI), transferrin saturation (TS), liver Fe content, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activities in liver, heart, and kidney, catalase (CAT) activity in liver, and SDH mRNA expressions in liver and kidney increased linearly (P < 0.05) with increasing levels of Fe supplementation. However, differences among Fe sources were detected (P < 0.05) only for PI, liver Fe content, CAT activity in liver, SDH activities in heart and kidney, and SDH mRNA expressions in liver and kidney. Based on slope ratios from multiple linear regressions of the above indices on daily dietary analyzed Fe intake, the average bioavailabilities of Fe-Prot ES, feed grade NaFeEDTA, and food grade NaFeEDTA relative to the inorganic FeSO4·7H2O (100%) for broilers were 139%, 155%, and 166%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The bioavailabilities of organic Fe sources relative to FeSO4·7H2O were closely related to their Qf values, and NaFeEDTA sources with higher Qf values showed higher Fe bioavailabilities for broilers fed with a conventional corn-soybean meal diet.

Abstract
Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace element that has been shown to attenuate the adverse effects of heat stress in the heart of broiler breeders and embryos. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms involving this process remain unclear. Therefore, two experiments were conducted to investigate the possible protective mechanisms of Mn on primary cultured chick embryonic myocardial cells exposed to heat challenge. In experiment 1, the myocardial cells were exposed to 40 °C (normal temperature, NT) and 44 °C (high temperature, HT) for 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8 h. In experiment 2, the myocardial cells were preincubated with no Mn supplementation (CON), 1 mmol/L of Mn as the inorganic MnCl2 (iMn) or organic Mn proteinate (oMn) under NT for 48 h, and then continuously incubated under NT or HT for another 2 or 4 h. The results from experiment 1 showed that the myocardial cells incubated for 2 or 4 h had the highest (P < 0.0001) heat-shock protein 70 (HSP70) or HSP90 mRNA levels than those incubated for other incubation times under HT. In experiment 2, HT increased (P < 0.05) the heat-shock factor 1 (HSF1) and HSF2 mRNA levels as well as Mn superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) activity of myocardial cells compared with NT. Furthermore, supplemental iMn and oMn increased (P < 0.02) HSF2 mRNA level and MnSOD activity of myocardial cells compared with the CON. Under HT, the HSP70 and HSP90 mRNA levels were lower (P < 0.03) in iMn group than in the CON group, in oMn group than in iMn group; and the MnSOD mRNA and protein levels were higher (P < 0.05) in oMn group than in the CON and iMn groups. These results from the present study indicate that supplemental Mn, especially oMn, could enhance the MnSOD expression and attenuate heat shock response to protect against heat challenge in primary cultured chick embryonic myocardial cells.

Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating the effects of diet iron levels on the blood iron status, tissue iron content, mRNA levels, and the activity of iron-containing enzymes in different tissues of squabs. A total of 120 pairs of healthy Silver Feather King parental pigeons with similar average body weight and egg production were randomly divided into 5 groups with 8 replicates and 3 pairs of pigeons per replicate. The five groups of breeding pigeons were fed an iron-unsupplemented basal diet and basal diet supplemented with 75, 150, 300, and 600 mg iron/kg, respectively. The diets were fed in the form of granular feed based on corn, soybean meal, wheat, and sorghum. A broken line model was used for regression analysis. The results showed that plasma iron (PI), serum ferritin, iron contents in crop milk and liver, liver catalase (CAT) activity, and heart succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity were affected by iron levels (P < 0.05). And PI, serum ferritin, iron content in crop milk, and heart SDH activity increased quadratically (P < 0.05), but the iron content and CAT activity in the liver decreased quadratically (P < 0.005) as dietary iron level increased. According to the broken-line model of serum ferritin fitting (P < 0.002), the optimal dietary iron level of breeding pigeons was estimated to be 193 mg/kg. In conclusion, serum ferritin is a sensitive index to evaluate the iron requirement of the breeding pigeon with two squabs, and the recommended iron supplemental level is 193 mg/kg.

Abstract
Micro-elements are essential for the optimal feeding of broiler hens. Since the chelated micro-elements negatively affect the content of micro- and macro-minerals, there has been a tendency to apply them as an alternative to common mineral forms of micro-elements in poultry diets. This paper reviews the effects of chelates of micro-elements (iron, copper, zinc, manganese, and selenium) on broiler breeder hens' internal and external egg quality and their egg products. The use of chelated micro-elements compared to the mineral forms does not have a significant effect on the performance of broiler breeder flocks, but they have significantly positive effects on the internal and external egg quality of broiler breeder flocks. The chelated micro-elements were also better than mineral resources of micro-elements in improving fertility (0.59%), hatchability (0.81%), and reducing mortality of progeny (2.25%). Chelated micro-elements have no negative impact on blood biochemistry or the immune system of broiler breeder hens and decrease cholesterol (0.84 mmol/l) and triglycerides (0.04 mmol/l) in most cases in comparison with the other mineral forms. Therefore, chelated forms of micro-elements instead of the inorganic mineral forms in diets of broiler breeder hens provide better protection for birds and the environment and also improve egg quality.

Abstract
The importance of dietary supplementation of animal feeds with trace minerals is irrefutable, with various forms of both organic and inorganic products commercially available. With advances in research techniques, and data obtained from both in-vitro and in-vivo studies in recent years, differences between inorganic and organic trace minerals have become more apparent. Furthermore, differences between specific organic mineral types can now be identified. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews, we carried out an extensive literature search on previously published studies detailing performance responses to trace minerals, in addition to their corresponding relative bioavailability values. This review covers four of the main trace minerals included in feed: copper, iron, manganese and zinc, and encompasses the different types of organic and inorganic products commercially available. Their impact from environmental, economic, and nutritional perspectives are discussed, along with the biological availability of various mineral forms in production animals. Species-specific sections cover ruminants, poultry, and swine. Extensive relative bioavailability tables cover values for all trace mineral products commercially available, including those not previously reviewed in earlier studies, thereby providing a comprehensive industry reference guide. Additionally, we examine reasons for variance in reported relative bioavailability values, with an emphasis on accounting for data misinterpretation.

Abstract
Two experiments were carried out to study the effect of in ovo manganese (Mn) injection on the embryonic development, antioxidation, hatchability, and performances of offspring broilers under normal temperature (NT) and high temperature (HT). Experiment 1 was conducted to investigate the effect of in ovo Mn injection on the embryonic hatchability of Arbor Acres broiler breeders. On D 9 of incubation, a total of 684 fertilized eggs were randomly allocated to 6 treatments: the non-injected positive control (niPC) and treatments injected with 0 (the negative control, iNC), 6.25, 12.5, 25.0, or 50.0 μg Mn/egg as Mn sulfate. Experiment 2 was conducted to investigate the effect of in ovo Mn injection on the embryonic development, antioxidation and performance of offspring broilers under NT and HT. A total of 792 fertilized eggs were randomly allocated to 6 treatments in a 1 (niPC) + 1 (iNC) + 2 (injected Mn sources: Mn sulfate and Mn proteinate) × 2 (injected Mn levels: 12.5 and 25.0 μg/egg) factorial arrangement during the embryonic stage and D1 to 28 at NT. Then, 288 birds were allotted to 12 treatments in a 6 (the above embryonic treatments) × 2 (environmental temperatures: NT-22℃ vs HT-34℃) factorial arrangement from D 29 to 42. The results showed that Mn injection affected (P < 0.03) the hatchability and the maximum level of in ovo injected Mn was 25.0 μg Mn/egg. The Mn injection upregulated (P < 0.05) Mn-containing superoxide dismutase mRNA expression in the embryonic heart compared to the iNC. Hyperthermia decreased (P < 0.05) ADG and ADFI, breast muscle percentage, plsma alkaline phosphatase activity, and red color values of breast and thigh muscles, but increased (P < 0.05) F/G, plasma aspartate aminotransferase and lactic dehydrogenase activities, total cholesterol, uric acid and triiodothyronine contents, abdominal fat, light values of breast and thigh muscles of offspring broilers. Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS As both a toxic and essential trace element in humans, limited research focuses on the association between blood manganese (Mn) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to assess blood Mn concentration and its relationship with NAFLD among adults in Northern China. METHODS We conducted a cohort-based case-control study among 1816 patients with NAFLD (970 males and 846 females) and 1111 healthy controls (598 males and 513 females). We used the restricted cubic splines method to investigate the potential non-linear relationship and logistic regression models to analyze the association between blood Mn and NAFLD. RESULTS The median (p25, p75) of blood Mn concentration in males was 10.08 (8.42,11.98) μg/L, higher than that in females [9.79 (8.01,12.04)] μg/L, P = 0.011. Compared with the tertile 1 group of Mn in males, the odds ratio (95 % confidence interval) of NAFLD for tertile 2 and tertile 3 group was 0.82 (0.61,1.10) and 0.64 (0.47,0.87), respectively. The reverse correlation was consistent in patients with different fibrosis severity determined by fibrosis-4 score. The protective association was more evident in those with triglycerides ≥1.7 mmol/L [odds ratio (95 % confidence interval) of tertile 3 vs. tertile 1: 0.40 (0.22,0.75)]. We found a non-significant U-shaped relationship between Mn and NAFLD in women. CONCLUSION There may exist sex differences for the association between blood Mn and NAFLD. Higher blood Mn may be a potential protective factor for NAFLD in males. The subjects with TG ≥ 1.7 mmol/L would benefit more from higher blood Mn levels.

Abstract
Simple Summary Manganese is a vital trace element for the growth of broilers. In order to meet the requirement of manganese in broiler production, the additives of manganese sources are usually added into the diet for broilers. Manganese hydroxychloride is a category of hydroxy trace minerals. The present study investigated the effect of dietary supplemental manganese as manganese hydroxychloride for growth performance, antioxidant capacity, tibial quality, and manganese deposition of broilers and recommended that optimal supplementation with manganese as manganese hydroxychloride in diets for broilers was 50–90 mg/kg. This study provides a rational recommendation for the application of manganese hydroxychloride in broiler diets. Abstract This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with manganese hydroxychloride (MHC) on production performance, antioxidant capacity, tibial quality, and manganese (Mn) deposition of broilers. A total of 756 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly allotted to 7 treatments of 6 replicates with 18 broilers per replicate. Broilers were fed corn-soybean meal basal diets supplemented of 100 mg/kg Mn as Mn sulfate (MnSO4), or 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 mg/kg Mn as MHC for 42 days. The growth performance of broilers was not affected by dietary MnSO4 or MHC (p > 0.05), whereas the dressing percentage increased linearly (p < 0.05) with increasing of dietary MHC addition level. The activities of catalase (CAT) and manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), and total antioxidant capability (T-AOC) in serum and liver on day 42 increased linearly (p < 0.05) with increasing of dietary MHC level, while malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration reduced linearly (p < 0.05). The length, strength, and density index of tibia increased linearly (p < 0.05) on day 21 as MHC supplementation level increased; there were no differences between MnSO4 group and 40–100 mg/kg Mn as MHC groups in tibial parameters of broilers (p > 0.05). As supplemental MHC levels increased, the Mn contents in heart, liver, kidney, and tibia increased linearly on day 42 (p < 0.05). In summary, dietary supplementation with MHC improved antioxidant capacity, bone quality, and Mn contents in broilers, but no effects on growth performance were detected. Based on the results of this study, dietary inclusion of 50–90 mg/kg Mn in the form of MHC to broilers is recommended.

Abstract
Manganese (Mn) is a trace element present in all tissues and is essential for animal growth and health; it also has an antioxidant capacity in tissues. The effect of Mn on meat quality and the mechanism of fat deposition of the breast muscle is still unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of Mn supplementation on the growth performance, meat quality, the activity and transcription of antioxidant enzymes, and fatty acid profile in the breast muscle, and the Mn deposition in tissues of Pekin ducks. A total of 896 one-day-old Pekin ducks were allocated into 7 groups, with 8 replicates, each replicate containing 16 ducks. The treatment diets consisted of basal diet supplemented with manganese sulfate at levels 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 240 mg/kg (as Mn). Results showed that ducks fed diets supplemented with Mn had no effect on the growth performance but decrease in the feed-to-gain ratio of day 1-14 (P < 0.01). Dietary Mn increased significantly the a∗ (redness) value of the duck breast meat at 24 h and intramuscular fat (P < 0.05), and decreased drip loss and shear force of the breast meat (P < 0.05). Manganese supplement significantly reduced the malondialdehyde content (P < 0.05), and significantly increased the mRNA expressions of manganese superoxide dismutase, thioredoxin 2, peroxiredoxin 3, and catalase (P < 0.05). About the fatty acid profile, dietary Mn increased (P < 0.05) the proportions of the C20 family. Manganese accumulation in the heart, breast muscle, and tibia was increased with Mn supplementation (P < 0.05), and Mn content of the heart conforms to the quadratic curve. Besides, Mn supplementation notably increased mRNA expression in genes involved in lipogenesis and deposition and decreased in genes associated with lipolytic in the breast muscle. These findings reveal that dietary Mn could improve meat quality and enhance antioxidant activity and intramuscular fat, which via regulated gene expression involved in lipogenesis and lipolytic.

Abstract
Dietary iron (Fe) influences manganese (Mn) utilization in chickens fed with inorganic Mn-supplemented diet. This study aimed to determine if dietary Fe levels affect Mn utilization in broilers fed with organic Mn-supplemented diet. Nine hundred 8-day-old broilers were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 treatments in a 3 (Fe level) × 2 (Mn source) factorial arrangement after feeding Mn- and Fe-unsupplemented diets for 7 days. The broilers were fed the basal diets (approximately 28 mg Mn/kg and 60 mg Fe/kg) supplemented with 0, 80, or 160 mg/kg Fe (L-Fe, M-Fe, or H-Fe), and 100 mg/kg Mn from Mn sulfate (MnSO4) or manganese-lysine chelate (MnLys) for 35 days. The H-Fe diet decreased (P < 0.05) body weight gain and feed intake as compared with L-Fe and M-Fe diets regardless of dietary Mn sources. Dietary Fe levels did not influence (P > 0.10) serum Mn concentration in MnLys-treated broilers, but serum Mn concentration decreased (P < 0.05) with dietary Fe increasing in MnSO4-treated broilers. The Mn concentration in the duodenum and tibia decreased (P < 0.05) with increasing dietary Fe levels regardless of dietary Mn sources, and MnLys increased (P < 0.04) these indices as compared with MnSO4. Dietary Fe levels did not significantly influence (P > 0.11) Mn concentration and activity and mRNA abundance of manganese-containing superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) in the heart of MnLys-treaded broilers, but the H-Fe diet decreased (P < 0.05) these indices in MnSO4-treated broilers as compared with M-Fe and L-Fe diets. The L-Fe diet increased (P < 0.001) duodenal divalent metal transporter 1 mRNA abundance when compared with the M-Fe and H-Fe diets on day 42, regardless of dietary Mn sources. The M-Fe and H-Fe diets decreased (P < 0.001) duodenal ferroportin 1 (FPN1) mRNA level when compared with the L-Fe diet in MnSO4-treated broilers, while dietary Fe levels did not significantly influence (P > 0.40) duodenal FPN1 mRNA abundance in MnLys-treated broilers. These results indicated dietary Fe levels decreased Mn utilization in MnSO4-treated broilers, but did not influence Mn utilization in MnLys-treated broilers evaluated by Mn concentrations in the serum and heart, and the activity and mRNA expression of heart MnSOD.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of manganese (Mn) and Bacillus subtilis (BS) on the production performance, egg quality, antioxidant capacity, and gut microbiota of breeding geese during laying period. A total of 120 forty-six-week-old breeding geese (Wulong) were randomly assigned to 1 of 6 treatment diets formulated to supply 10, 20, and 30 mg/kg Mn with 5 × 109 CFU/kg or 2.5 × 109 CFU/kg BS for a 10-wk trial. Results showed that dietary supplementation with 20 and 30 mg/kg Mn could decrease the daily feed intake (DFI) of geese. Moreover, 30 mg/kg Mn significantly increased the laying rate. Besides, although Mn addition had no obvious effect on egg quality, 5 × 109 CFU/kg BS was found to elevate the hatching egg hatching rate and eggshell thickness. For the serum hormones, 30 mg/kg Mn promoted estradiol secretion, while 5 × 109 CFU/kg BS increased the level of follicle-stimulating hormone. Furthermore, 20 and 30 mg/kg Mn and 5 × 109 CFU/kg BS significantly enhanced the total antioxidant capacity by increasing the activity of total superoxide dismutases or decreasing the content of malondialdehyde. Dietary supplementation with 5 × 109 CFU/kg BS also increased the intestinal villus height and upregulated the abundance of Fusobacteria, Fusobacteriaceae, Fusobacterium, and Faecalibacterium in cecal content. In addition, 20 and 30 mg/kg Mn elevated the levels of Bacteroidetes, Bacteroidaceae, Bacteroides, and Ruminococcaceae but decreased Streptococcaceae. Importantly, an interaction effect was observed between Mn and BS on the DFI, egg mass, average egg size, and the abundance of Bacteroides as well as Faecalibacterium. In conclusion, dietary inclusion of Mn and BS could improve the production performance, egg quality, antioxidant capacity, intestinal structure, as well as gut microbiota. Supplementation of 30 mg/kg Mn and 5.0 × 109 CFU/kg BS provided the optimal effect.

Abstract
Heat stress (HS) is a financial and physiological burden on the poultry industry and the mitigation of the adverse effects of HS is vital to poultry production sustainability. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to determine the effects of an amino acid-chelated trace mineral supplement on growth performance, stress and inflammatory markers, and meat quality in heat-stressed broilers. One day-old Cobb 500 male broilers (n = 480) were allocated into 12 environmental chambers (24 floor pens) and divided into two groups: one group supplemented with amino acid-chelated trace mineral in drinking water and one control group. On day 28, birds were subjected to chronic heat stress (HS, 2 wk, 35 °C and 20% to 30% RH) or maintained at thermoneutral condition (TN, 24 °C) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. Feed intake (FI), water consumption, and body weight were recorded. At day 42, serum fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FITC-D) levels, blood gas, electrolyte, and stress markers were measured. Jejunum samples were collected to measure gene expression of stress, inflammation, and tight junction proteins. The rest of the birds were processed to evaluate carcass traits. HS resulted in an increase in core body temperature, which increased water intake and decreased FI, body weight, and feed efficiency (P < 0.05). HS reduced carcass yield and the weight of all parts (P < 0.05). HS significantly increased levels of circulating corticosterone (CORT), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), interleukin 18 (IL-18), tumor necrosis factor alpha, C-reactive protein, and nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain leucine-rich repeat and pyrin domain-containing 3 expression. HS significantly increased serum FITC-D levels and the expression of HSP70 and IL-18 in the jejunum. Although it did not affect the growth performance, amino acid-chelated trace mineral supplementation reversed the effect of HS by reducing CORT and FITC-D levels and the expression of stress and proinflammatory cytokines in the circulation and the jejunum. However, it upregulated these parameters in birds maintained under TN conditions. Together, these data indicate that the amino acid-chelated trace mineral might alleviate stress and inflammation and improve gut integrity in heat-stressed but not thermoneutral broilers.

Abstract
This study was aimed at estimating the dietary manganese (Mn) requirement for laying duck breeders. A total of 504 Longyan duck breeders (body weight: 1.20 ± 0.02 kg) aged 17 wk were randomly allocated to 6 treatments. The birds were fed with a basal diet (Mn, 17.5 mg/kg) or diets supplemented with 20, 40, 80, 120, or 160 mg/kg of Mn (as MnSO4·H2O) for 18 wk. Each treatment had 6 replicates of 14 ducks each. As a result of this study, dietary Mn supplementation did not affect the productive performance of laying duck breeders in the early laying period (17–18 wk), but affected egg production, egg mass, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) from 19 to 34 wk (P < 0.05), and there was a linear and quadratic effect of supplement level (P < 0.05). The proportion of preovulatory ovarian follicles increased (P < 0.01) linearly and quadratically, and atretic follicles (weight and percentage) decreased (P < 0.05) quadratically with dietary Mn supplementation. The density and breaking strength of tibias increased (quadratic; P < 0.05), the calcium content of tibias decreased (linear, quadratic; P < 0.01), and Mn content increased (linear, quadratic; P < 0.001) with increase in Mn. The addition of Mn had a quadratic effect on serum contents of estradiol, prolactin, progesterone, luteinizing hormone, and follicle-stimulating hormone (P < 0.001). Dietary Mn supplementation decreased serum contents of total protein (linear, P < 0.05), glucose (quadratic, P < 0.05), total bilirubin, triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and calcium (linear, quadratic; P < 0.05). The serum total antioxidant capacity and total and Mn-containing superoxide dismutase activities increased (linear, quadratic; P < 0.001), and malondialdehyde content decreased (linear, quadratic; P < 0.001) in response to Mn supplemental levels. The dietary Mn requirements, in milligram per kilogram for a basal diet containing 17.5 mg/kg of Mn, for Longyan duck breeders from 19 to 34 wk of age were estimated to be 84.2 for optimizing egg production, 85.8 for egg mass, and 95.0 for FCR. Overall, dietary Mn supplementation, up to 160 mg/kg of feed, affected productive performance, tibial characteristics, and serum biochemical and antioxidant status of layer duck breeders. Supplementing this basal diet (17.5 mg/kg of Mn) with 85 to 95 mg/kg of additional Mn was adequate for laying duck breeders during the laying period.

Abstract
Growing concern for public health and food safety has prompted a special interest in developing nutritional strategies for removing waterborne and foodborne pathogens, including Salmonella. Strong links between manganese (Mn) and intestinal barrier or immune function hint that dietary Mn supplementation is likely to be a promising approach to limit the loads of pathogens in broilers. Here, we provide evidence that Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium, 4 × 108 CFUs) challenge-induced intestinal injury along with systemic Mn redistribution in broilers. Further examining of the effect of dietary Mn treatments (a basal diet plus additional 0, 40, or 100 mg Mn/kg for corresponding to Mn-deficient, control, or Mn-surfeit diet, respectively) on intestinal barrier and inflammation status of broilers infected with S. Typhimurium revealed that birds fed the control and Mn-surfeit diets exhibited improved intestinal tight junctions and microbiota composition. Even without Salmonella infection, dietary Mn deficiency alone increased intestinal permeability by impairing intestinal tight junctions. In addition, when fed the control and Mn-surfeit diets, birds showed decreased Salmonella burdens in cecal content and spleen, with a concomitant increase in inflammatory cytokine levels in spleen. Furthermore, the dietary Mn-supplementation-mediated induction of cytokine production was probably associated with the nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB)/hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) pathway, as judged by the enhanced manganese superoxide dismutase activity and the increased H2O2 level in mitochondria, together with the increased mRNA level of NF-κB in spleen. Ingenuity-pathway analysis indicated that acute-phase response pathways, T helper type 1 pathway, and dendritic cell maturation were significantly activated by the dietary Mn supplementation. Our data suggest that dietary Mn supplementation could enhance intestinal barrier and splenic inflammatory response to fight against Salmonella infection in broilers.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to study the effect of water supplementation of organic acid-chelated trace minerals (OTM) on production traits, carcass characteristics, intestinal histomorphology, and nutrient digestibility in African ostrich chicks from 8 to 12 mo of age. A total of 20 growing ostriches, with almost similar body weight (73.4 to 75.8 kg), were individually distributed in outdoor paddocks of ≈ 24 m2 and were randomly allocated into 1 of the following 4 treatments: (1) control/basal diet, (2) low OTM (basal diet + 100 mg/bird/day OTM powder in water), (3) medium OTM (basal diet + 1 g/bird/day OTM powder in water), and (4) high OTM (basal diet + 2 g/bird/day OTM powder in water). The body weight gain and feed conversion efficiency were greater (P < 0.05) in ostriches receiving medium-OTM treatment compared to control during the overall phase of the experiment. Although whole carcass yield, the yield of parts, and the relative weights of internal organs were not affected by experimental treatments, supplementation of higher amounts of OTM (medium- and high-OTM) resulted in a decrease (P < 0.05) in the subcutaneous and abdominal fat contents. Medium- and high-OTM treatments increased (P < 0.05) the villus height/crypt depth ratio in the jejunum and ileum compared with control and low-OTM treatments. Moreover, ostriches receiving the medium-OTM had also higher total tract apparent digestibility of energy (P = 0.048), ether extract (P = 0.050), crude fiber (P = 0.063), and higher AMEn (P = 0.094) than the control group. Overall, supplementation of OTM at the level of 1 g/bird/day to the drinking water of growing ostriches fed diets containing the recommended levels of inorganic trace minerals could beneficially affect productive performance, nutrient digestibility, and intestinal morphology.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of manganese (Mn) source on Mn absorption and expressions of Mn, amino acid, and peptide transporters in the small intestine of broilers. A total of 320 Mn-deficient 15-day-old Arbor Acres male broilers were randomly assigned to 5 treatments with 8 replicates/treatment and 8 chicks/replicate and fed an Mn-unsupplemented control diet or the control diet supplemented with 110 mg Mn/kg from either MnSO4, or 1 of 3 organic Mn chelates with weak (OW), moderate (OM), or strong (OS) chelation strength for 14 D. The plasma Mn contents were higher (P < 0.03) in supplemental Mn groups than in the control group, in OS group than in OM group, and in OM group than in OW and MnSO4 groups on day 28. Broilers fed diets supplemented with Mn had higher (P < 0.02) duodenal divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) and ferroportin 1 (FPN1) mRNA levels and FPN1 protein level on both days 21 and 28 than those fed the control diet. Duodenal DMT1 mRNA and protein levels were higher (P < 0.05) in OM and OS groups than in OW and MnSO4 groups on day 28. The mRNA levels of amino acid transporters [b0, +-type amino acid transporter 1 (B0AT1) and excitatory amino acid transporter 3 (EAAT3)] were higher (P < 0.0005), and peptide transporter 1 was lower (P < 0.04) in the ileum than in the duodenum and jejunum; however, Mn source did not affect (P > 0.05) mRNA levels of amino acid and peptide transporters in the small intestine of broilers. The results from the present study indicate that both DMT1 and FPN1 facilitated Mn absorption, however, the amino acid and peptide transporters might not be involved in the transport of the organic Mn chelates; organic Mn chelates with moderate and strong chelation strength, especially strong chelation strength, showed higher Mn absorption possibly due to enhanced DMT1 expression in the duodenum of broilers.

Abstract
The effects of manganese (Mn) preconditioning, 96 h post-hatch followed by the replacement of inorganic Mn with different levels of organic Mn (5 to 21 D), on growth, tissue excreta Mn content, gene expression, and enzyme activity were evaluated. A total of 420 day-old male Cobb 500 broilers were divided into 2 groups. One group was fed a corn-soybean meal basal diet containing 17 mg of Mn/kg (preconditioning diet, MnPD); the second group was fed the non-preconditioning diet (NPCD), which was the MnPD supplemented with 60 mg of Mn/kg from manganese sulfate (MnSO4). On day 5, each group was divided into 5 subgroups and were randomly assigned to dietary treatments consisting of MnPD alone or MnPD supplemented with 12 or 60 mg Mn/kg Mn as MnSO4 or Mn proteinate (6 replicate cages of 6 birds). Broiler chicks that were fed the MnPD had lower (P ≤ 0.05) body weight gain (BWG) and G:F ratio when compared to those that were fed the NPCD for 4 D. Birds that were fed MnPD (1 to 4 D) and switched to MnPD supplemented with 60 mg/kg Mn (5 to 21 D) had lower (P ≤ 0.05) BWG compared to those that were fed NPCD (1 to 4 D) and switched to MnPD supplemented with 60 mg/kg Mn for 21 D. Excreta, tibia ash, liver, and heart Mn levels were increased (P ≤ 0.05) by supplemental Mn. The expression of jejunum divalent metal transporter-1 mRNA levels, as well as activities of plasma total super oxide dismutase and liver alanine transaminase, was not affected by MnPD or Mn source and levels. These results confirmed that feeding marginally deficient Mn diets to broiler chicks post-hatch does affect growth rate and tissue Mn concentration.

Dietary supplementation of organic or inorganic chromium modulates the immune responses of broilers vaccinated with Avian Influenza virus vaccine. Animal 2018; 13:983-991. Abstract
Dietary supplementation with the organic chromium (Cr) has been shown to positively affect the immune function of poultry. However, to our knowledge, no experiment has been done to directly compare the impacts of Cr chloride and chromium picolinate (CrPic) on the immune responses of broilers vaccinated with Avian Influenza (AI) virus vaccine. Therefore, the present experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of supplemental Cr sources (Cr chloride and CrPic) and levels on the growth performance and immune responses of broilers vaccinated with AI virus vaccine so as to provide an effective nutritional strategy for improving immune function of broilers. A total of 432 1-day (d)-old male broiler chicks were used in a 1 plus 2×4 design. Chickens were given either a diet without Cr supplementation (control) or diets supplemented with 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, or 3.2 mg Cr/kg as either Cr chloride or CrPic for 42 d. Compared to the control, dietary Cr supplementation had no effect (P>0.05) on average daily gain, average daily feed intake and gain : feed of broilers during the starter and grower phases, but increased (P<0.05) the relative weights of bursa of fabricius on d 21 and thymus, spleen, or bursa of fabricius on d 42, serum antibody titers against AI virus on d 21, 28, 35 and 42, blood T-lymphocyte transformation rate on d 28 and 42, blood T-lymphocyte percentage on d 42, and serum interleukin-2 contents on d 28. Broilers fed the diets supplemented with the inorganic Cr chloride had higher (P<0.05) weights of thymus, spleen and bursa of fabricius than those fed the diets supplemented with the CrPic on d 42. In addition, broilers fed the diets supplemented with the CrPic had higher (P<0.05) antibody titers against AI virus than those fed the diets supplemented with the inorganic Cr chloride on d 21 and 35. These results indicate that dietary Cr supplementation improved immune responses of broilers vaccinated with AI virus, and the inorganic Cr chloride was more effective than the CrPic in increasing the relative weights of lymphoid organs, however, the CrPic was more effective than the inorganic Cr chloride in enhancing the serum antibody titer against AI virus.

Abstract
Manganese (Mn) is an essential nutrient for both host and pathogen. Recent studies have demonstrated the nutritional immunity of Mn against Salmonella infection in mammals. To investigate the effect of high dietary Mn on immune responses of broilers following Salmonella challenge, 144 1-day-old male broilers were fed a basal diet (containing 20.04 mg Mn/kg) plus an additional 40 (the control group) or 400 mg Mn/kg (the H-Mn group) for 7 days. The 72 broilers in each group were then orally inoculated with 5 × 107 CFUs of Salmonella typhimurium (ATCC#14028) or phosphate-buffered saline. Peripheral blood, spleens, cecal tonsils, and bursa of Fabricius were collected from Salmonella-inoculated and Salmonella-noninoculated broilers (n = 6) at 2 days post inoculation (2 DPI) and 7 days post inoculation (7 DPI). Peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations were determined by flow cytometry. The messenger RNA (mRNA) abundance of genes was determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Salmonella counts were higher (P < 0.05) in the H-Mn group than that in the control group at 2 DPI in the cecal contents of Salmonella-inoculated broilers. High dietary Mn increased CD3+CD4+ and CD3+CD8+ percentages in the peripheral blood of Salmonella-inoculated broilers at 2 DPI. Salmonella inoculation increased interleukin (IL)-6 mRNA expression in spleens and bursa of Fabricius at 2 DPI and increased IL-1β and IL-6 mRNA expression in cecal tonsils at 7 DPI in the H-Mn group. These changes were not observed in the control group. High dietary Mn increased interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in spleens and decreased IFN-γ and IL-12 mRNA expression in cecal tonsils of Salmonella-inoculated broilers at 2 DPI. High dietary Mn decreased IL-17 mRNA expression in the bursa of Fabricius at 7 DPI, but increased this expression in cecal tonsils at 2 and 7 DPI in Salmonella-inoculated broilers. These results suggested that dietary Mn level affected T helper (Th) 1-cytokine reaction in spleens and cecal tonsils, and Th17-mediated immunity in cecal tonsils and the bursa of Fabricius of broilers when challenged with Salmonella.

Abstract
The demand for duck meat, duck eggs, and associated products is increasing each year. Classic and modern selection programs have been applied to enhance the economic traits of ducks to satisfy the requirements of consumers and enhance the incomes of producers. The nutritional requirements of unselected ducks may not be adequate, however, to fulfill the potential productivity performance of modern birds, including both meat-type and egg-type ducks. In particular, an imbalanced diet is associated with low productive performance and signs of nutritional deficiency (if insufficient nutrients are supplied), as well as with high feed costs and manure problems that reflect flock health and welfare (if excessive nutrients are supplied). Thus, the main aim of this review is to summarize the results of previous studies that estimated the nutrient requirements of meat-type and egg-type ducks in order to evaluate current knowledge and to identify further issues that need to be addressed. In addition, the results obtained in previous studies are compared in order to understand how to lower commercial feed costs, fulfill the genetic potential of selected ducks, protect the environment from pollution, and satisfy the welfare and health needs of ducks.

Abstract
The study herein investigated the effect of mean particle size, calcium (Ca) source, Ca concentration and phytase on broiler performance, mineral digestibility and skeletal integrity from 1 to 28 days post-hatch. Sixteen dietary treatments were arranged in a 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design consisting of two Ca sources (limestone or a highly soluble calcium, HSC), two Ca concentrations (9.0 or 6.0 g/kg from Day 0 to Day 14 and 8.0 or 5.5 g/kg from Day 15 to Day 28), two Ca particle sizes (<0.5 or >0.5 mm) and two phytase-supplementation levels (0 or 1000 FTU/kg). Overall performance (Days 1–28) showed that the addition of phytase to diets containing 8.0 g/kg total Ca provided by HSC improved feed intake (P < 0.05), but there was no effect of the addition of phytase to birds fed Ca from limestone. Phytase supplementation decreased feed intake in birds fed limestone with a mean particle size >0.5 mm and increased feed intake in birds fed HSC with a mean particle size >0.5 mm, which resulted in a Ca source × Ca particle size × phytase interaction (P < 0.05). Birds fed diets containing HSC had a lower liveweight gain than did birds fed diets containing limestone (P = 0.03). Increasing the dietary Ca concentration from 5.5 g/kg to 8.0 g/kg total Ca decreased liveweight gain (P = 0.01). Phytase supplementation increased final liveweight gain (P < 0.001). Foot ash was observed to be higher in birds that received diets containing 8.0 g/kg Ca (P < 0.05). Phytase supplementation increased foot ash percentage (P < 0.05). Phytase increased Ca digestibility in birds fed diets containing Ca provided by HSC with a mean particle size <0.5 mm and diets containing limestone with a mean particle size >0.5 mm (P < 0.05). Phytase increased Ca digestibility in birds fed 5.5 g/kg Ca, but had no effect on Ca digestibility in birds fed 8.0 g/kg Ca (P < 0.05). The addition of phytase to diets improved the digestibility of phosphorus, especially in birds fed diets containing limestone (P < 0.05), or 8.0 g/kg total Ca (P < 0.05), or diets with a mean particle size >0.5 mm (P < 0.05). The results of the present study are consistent with those of previous studies by the authors, which have shown that low dietary Ca in conjunction with phytase improves broiler performance and mineral digestibility. Phytase improved growth performance, regardless of Ca source or Ca concentration and improved mineral digestibility.

Abstract
The present experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding different concentrations and the source of zinc (Zn) on the performance, tissue mineral status, superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity and meat quality in 0–4-week-old broiler chicks. Dietary treatments included the corn–soybean meal-based diet (control) and the basal diet supplemented with Zn at 20, 50 or 80 mg/kg, added as ZnSO4, Zn-methionine or Zn-enriched yeast. The results showed that birds fed Zn-supplemented diets had higher average weight gain and average feed intake than did birds fed the control diet (P < 0.01). At the end of the experiment, the Zn deposition in pancreas, liver and tibia increased (P < 0.01), regardless of the source, in response to increasing dietary Zn concentrations, whereas plasma Zn status was significantly increased by the highest Zn supplementation level. The main effect of Zn supplementation level was significant for the activities of Cu and/or Zn SOD in the liver and pancreas (P < 0.01). As broiler given 50 mg Zn had higher tissue SOD activity than did broilers fed the other treatment diets. Furthermore, Zn supplementation at up to 50 mg/kg significantly increased (P < 0.01) Zn accumulation and SOD activity and decreased lipid peroxidation in muscles around the femur bone. Results from the present study demonstrated that supplementation with 50 mg Zn may be sufficient for normal broiler growth to 28 days of age and the dietary inclusion of organic Zn could be utilised more effectively than that of inorganic sources.

Abstract
Two experiments were designed to investigate the effects of Mn source and concentration on the mRNA expression and enzymatic activities of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and malic enzyme (ME) in cultured primary broiler hepatocytes. In Expt 1, primary broiler hepatocytes were treated with 0 (control), 0·25, 0·50 or 0·75 mmol/l of Mn as inorganic manganese chloride (MnCl2.4H2O) for 24 and 48 h. In Expt 2, primary broiler hepatocytes were incubated with 0 (control), 0·25 or 0·50 mmol/l of Mn as either manganese chloride or Mn-amino acid chelate for 48 h. The mRNA levels and activities of FAS and ME in the hepatocytes were measured in Expts 1 and 2. The results in Expt 1 showed that only at 48 h mRNA expression levels of FAS and ME in the hepatocytes decreased linearly (P0·33) on any of the measured cellular parameters. The results suggested that Mn might reduce cell damage and regulate FAS and ME expression at a transcriptional level in primary cultured broiler hepatocytes.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of iron source on Fe absorption and the gene expression of divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) and ferroportin 1 (FPN1) in the ligated duodenal loops of broilers. The in situ ligated duodenal loops from Fe-deficient broiler chicks (28-d-old) were perfused with Fe solutions containing 0 to 14.33 mmol Fe/L from 1 of the following: Fe sulfate (FeSO∙7HO), Fe methionine with weak chelation strength (Fe-Met W; chelation strength is expressed as quotient of formation [Q] value, Q = 1.37), Fe proteinate with moderate chelation strength (Fe-Prot M; Q = 43.6), and Fe proteinate with extremely strong chelation strength (Fe-Prot ES; Q = 8,590) for up to 30 min. The gene expression of DMT1 and FPN1 in the duodenal loops from the control group and the groups treated with 3.58 mmol Fe/L from 1 of 4 Fe sources was analyzed. The absorption kinetics of Fe from different Fe sources in the duodenum followed a saturated carrier-dependent transport process. The maximum transport rate (J) values in the duodenum were greater ( < 0.03) for Fe-Prot ES and Fe-Prot M than for Fe-Met W and FeSO∙7HO. The Fe perfusion inhibited ( < 0.05) the mRNA expression of but enhanced ( < 0.0008) the mRNA expression of in the duodenum and had no effect ( > 0.14) on the protein expression levels of the 2 transporters. These results indicated that organic Fe sources with greater Q values showed higher Fe absorption; however, all Fe sources followed the same saturated carrier-dependent transport process in the duodenum, and DMT1 and FPN1 might participate in Fe absorption in the duodenum of broilers regardless of Fe source.

Abstract
Maternal heat stress induced the aberrant epigenetic patterns resulting in the abnormal development of offspring embryos. It is unclear whether maternal dietary manganese supplementation as an epigenetic modifier could protect the chick embryonic development against maternal heat stress via epigenetic mechanisms. To test this hypothesis using an avian model, a completely randomized design with a 2 (maternal normal and high environmental temperatures of 21 and 32°C, respectively) × 3 (maternal dietary manganese sources, the control diet without manganese supplementation and the control diet + 120 mg/kg as either inorganic or organic manganese) factorial arrangement was adopted. Maternal environmental hyperthermia increased mRNA expressions of heat shock proteins 90 and 70, cyclin-dependent kinase 6 and B-cell CLL/lymphoma 2-associated X protein displaying oxidative damage and apoptosis in the embryonic heart. Maternal environmental hyperthermia impaired the embryonic development associated with the alteration of epigenetic status, as evidenced by global DNA hypomethylation and histone 3 lysine 9 hypoacetylation in the embryonic heart. Maternal dietary manganese supplementation increased the heart anti-apoptotic gene B-cell CLL/lymphoma 2 expressions under maternal environmental hyperthermia and manganese superoxide dismutase enzyme activity in the embryonic heart. Maternal dietary organic Mn supplementation effectively eliminated the impairment of maternal environmental hyperthermia on the embryonic development. Maternal dietary manganese supplementation up-regulated manganese superoxide dismutase mRNA expression by reducing DNA methylation and increasing histone 3 lysine 9 acetylation of its promoter. It is suggested that maternal dietary manganese addition could protect the chick embryonic development against maternal heat stress via enhancing epigenetic-activated antioxidant and anti-apoptotic abilities.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to determine the effects of feeding a zinc (Zn) deficient diet to broiler chicks for 96 h post-hatch followed by feeding diets with different Zn sources and supplemental levels (5 to 21 d) on the growth performance, tissue, and excreta Zn content. At the start of the study, four hundred 20-day-old male broiler chicks were divided into two groups. One group was fed a corn soybean meal based diet containing 25 mg of Zn/kg (imprinting diet, ID). The second group was fed the basal diet supplemented with 40 mg of Zn/kg from Zn oxide (ZnO) (non-imprinting diet, NID). Both groups were fed these diets for 96 h. At d 5, chicks from each group were randomly assigned to the dietary treatments consisting of the basal diet alone or the basal diet supplemented with 8 or 40 mg/kg Zn as ZnO or Zn proteinate. Main effects of post-hatch Zn ID were observed on feed intake and G:F. ID decreased (P < 0.05) feed intake and improved (P < 0.05) the gain to feed ratio (G:F) of 14 and 21 d old chicks compared to G:F of chicks fed NID. Additionally, G:F for 14 and 21 d was improved (P < 0.05) by interaction of Zn source × level. Furthermore, at d 21 chicks fed the ID had a lower (P < 0.05) Zn content in the tibia ash and excreta, and a higher (P < 0.05) Zn content in the pancreas tissue compared to chicks fed NID. These results suggest that Zn imprinting can affect body Zn stores and early performance.

Abstract
AbstractTo investigate the effect of Mn on antioxidant status and on the expressions of heat shock proteins/factors in tissues of laying broiler breeders subjected to heat challenge, we used a completely randomised design (n 6) with a factorial arrangement of 2 environmental temperatures (normal, 21±1°C, and high, 32±1°C)×3 dietary Mn treatments (a Mn-unsupplemented basal diet (CON), or a basal diet supplemented with 120 mg Mn/kg diet, either as inorganic Mn sulphate (iMn) or as organic Mn proteinate (oMn)). There were no interactions (P>0·10) between environmental temperature and dietary Mn in any of the measured indices. High temperature decreased (P<0·003) Mn content, and also tended (P=0·07) to decrease Cu Zn superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) activity in the liver and heart. However, an increased Mn superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) activity (P<0·05) and a slight increase in malondialdehyde level (P=0·06) were detected in breast muscle. Up-regulated (P<0·05) expressions of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) and HSF3 mRNA and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA and protein were found in all three tissues. Broiler breeders fed either iMn or oMn had higher tissue Mn content (P<0·0001), heart MnSOD and CuZnSOD activities (P<0·01) and breast muscle MnSOD protein levels (P<0·05), and lower (P<0·05) breast muscle HSP70 mRNA and protein levels compared with those fed CON. Broiler breeders fed oMn had higher (P<0·03) bone Mn content than those fed iMn. These results indicate that high temperature decreases Mn retention and increases HSP70, HSF1 and HSF3 expressions in the tissues of laying broiler breeders. Furthermore, dietary supplementation with Mn in either source may enhance the heart’s antioxidant ability and inhibit the expression of HSP70 in breast muscle. Finally, the organic Mn appears to be more available than inorganic Mn for bone in laying broiler breeders regardless of environmental temperatures.

AbstractThe present study was carried out to evaluate dietary Mn requirements of broilers from 22 to 42 d of age using molecular biomarkers. Chickens were fed a conventional basal maize–soyabean meal diet supplemented with Mn as Mn sulphate in graded concentrations of 20 mg Mn/kg from 0 to 140 mg Mn/kg of diet for 21 d (from 22 to 42 d of age). The Mn response curves were fitted for ten parameters including heart Mn-containing superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) mRNA and its protein expression levels and the DNA-binding activities of specificity protein 1 (Sp1) and activating protein-2 (AP-2). Heart MnSOD mRNA and protein expression levels showed significant quadratic responses (P<0·01), and heart MnSOD activity showed a broken-line response (P<0·01), whereas Mn content and DNA-binding activities of Sp1 and AP-2 in the heart displayed linear responses (P<0·01) to dietary Mn concentrations, respectively. The estimates of dietary Mn requirements were 101, 104 and 94 mg/kg for full expressions of MnSOD mRNA level, MnSOD protein level and MnSOD activity in the heart, respectively. Our findings indicate that heart MnSOD mRNA expression level is a more reliable indicator than heart MnSOD protein expression level and its activity for the evaluation of Mn requirement of broilers, and about 100 mg Mn/kg of diet is required for the full expression of heart MnSOD in broilers fed the conventional basal maize–soyabean meal diet from 22 to 42 d of age.

Abstract
Twenty-four organic Fe sources were evaluated by polarographic analysis and via solubility in buffers (pH 5 and 2) and deionized water. Organic Fe sources included 6 Fe-Met complexes (Fe-Met), 10 Fe-Gly complexes, 1 Fe-Lys complex, 4 Fe proteinates, and 3 Fe-AA complexes (Fe-AA). Sources varied considerably in chemical characteristics. Chelation strengths (quotient of formation [Q] values) ranged from weak (Q = 1.08) to extremely strong strength (Q = 8,590). A total of 1,170 1-d-old Arbor Acres male broilers were randomly allotted to 6 replicate cages (15 chicks/cage) for each of 13 treatments in a completely randomized design involving a 4 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments (4 Fe sources × 3 added Fe levels) plus a control with no added Fe. Dietary treatments included a corn-soybean meal basal diet (control; 55.8 mg Fe/kg) and the basal diet supplemented with 20, 40, or 60 mg Fe/kg as iron sulfate (FeSO∙7HO); an Fe-Met with weak chelation strength (Fe-Met W; Q = 1.37; 14.7% Fe); an iron proteinate with moderate chelation strength (Fe-Prot M; Q = 43.6; 14.2% Fe); or an iron proteinate with extremely strong chelation strength (Fe-Prot ES; Q = 8,590; 10.2% Fe). The growth performance, Fe concentrations, hematological indices, and activities and gene expressions of 2 Fe-containing enzymes in tissues of broilers at 7, 14, and 21 d of age were determined in the present study. Transferrin saturation in plasma on 14 d; bone Fe on d 7 and 14; liver Fe on d 7, 14, and 21; kidney Fe on d 14; succinate dehydrogenase activities in the liver on d 21 and in the kidney on d 7 and 21; mRNA levels in the kidney and heart on d 14; and mRNA levels in the liver and kidney on d 21 linearly increased ( < 0.05) as added Fe levels increased. However, differences in bioavailabilities among Fe sources were detected ( < 0.05) only for the mRNA levels in the liver and kidney on d 21. Based on slope ratios from the multiple linear regression of mRNA level in the liver or kidney of broilers on d 21 on daily dietary analyzed Fe intake, the bioavailabilities of Fe-Met W, Fe-Prot M, and Fe-Prot ES relative to iron sulfate (100%) were 129 ( = 0.18), 164 ( < 0.003), and 174% ( < 0.001) or 102 ( = 0.95), 143 ( = 0.09), and 174% ( < 0.004), respectively. These results indicated that the relative bioavailabilities of organic Fe sources were closely related to their Q values and organic Fe sources with greater Q values showed higher Fe bioavailabilities.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplemental chromium (Cr) on growth performance, carcass traits, and meat quality of broilers reared under heat stress. A total of 252 1-d-old Cobb 500 commercial female broilers were randomly allotted by body weight (BW) to one of six replicate cages (six broilers per cage) for each of seven treatments in a completely randomized design involving a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments with three Cr sources (Cr propionate, CrPro; Cr picolinate, CrPic; Cr chloride, CrCl3) and two concentrations of added Cr (0.4, or 2.0 mg of Cr/kg) plus a Cr-unsupplemented control group. Feed and distilled-deionized water were available ad libitum for an experimental phase of 42 days. For induction of heat stress, the house temperature was set at 33 ± 2 °C from 15 to 42 days of age. Results showed that birds supplemented with Cr, regardless of Cr source, had increased ADG (P = 0.032) than controls. Birds fed 2.0 mg Cr/kg diet had greater ADG (P = 0.005) than birds fed 0.4 mg Cr/kg diet. Compared to controls, birds fed with Cr had greater dressing percentage (P = 0.021). Percentage of abdominal fat decreased (P = 0.013), whereas, breast intramuscular fat (IMF) remained unaffected (P = 0.147) in Cr supplemented vs control broilers. Broilers supplemented Cr had decreased b* values of meat color (P = 0.042) in breast muscle. B*values were also lesser (P = 0.049) in birds fed CrPro than birds supplemented with CrCl3 or CrPic. Regardless of Cr source, the percentage of cooking loss was decreased (P = 0.025) with Cr supplementation in breast muscle when compared to controls. Results from this study indicate that Cr supplementation, independent of its source, could promote growth and improve carcass traits and meat quality of broilers under heat stress conditions. Chromium propionate seems to have greater beneficial effects on meat color in comparison with CrPic and CrCl3.

Abstract
Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of inorganic and organic Mn sources on MnSOD mRNA, protein and enzymatic activity and the possible signal pathways. The primary broiler myocardial cells were treated with MnCl2 (I) or one of organic chelates of Mn and amino acids with weak, moderate (M) or strong (S) chelation strength for 12 and 48 h. Cells were preincubated with superoxide radical anions scavenger N-acetylcysteine (NAC) or specific inhibitors for MAPKs and protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) or protein kinase C (PKC) for 30 min before treatments of I and M. The MnSOD mRNA, protein and enzymatic activity, phosphorylated MAPKs or protein kinases activations were examined. The results showed that additions of Mn increased (P < 0.05) MnSOD mRNA levels and M was more effective than I. Additions of Mn elevated (P < 0.05) MnSOD protein levels and enzymatic activities, and no differences were found among I and M. Addition of NAC did not decrease (P > 0.05) Mn-induced MnSOD mRNA and protein levels. None of the three MAPKs was phosphorylated (P > 0.05) by Mn. Additions of Mn decreased (P < 0.05) the PTK activities and increased (P < 0.05) the membrane PKC contents. Inhibitors for PTK or PKC decreased (P < 0.05) Mn-induced MnSOD protein levels. The results suggested that Mn-induced MnSOD mRNA and protein expressions be not related with NAC, and MAPK pathways might not involve in Mn-induced MnSOD mRNA expression. PKC and PTK mediated the Mn-induced MnSOD protein expression.

Abstract
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary chromium (Cr) source and concentration on growth performance, carcass traits, and some serum lipid parameters of broilers under normal rearing conditions for 42 days. A total of 252 1-day-old Cobb 500 commercial female broilers were randomly allotted by body weight (BW) to one of six replicate cages (six broilers per cage) for each of seven treatments in a completely randomized design involved in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments with three Cr sources (Cr propionate (CrPro), Cr picolinate (CrPic), Cr chloride (CrCl3)) and two concentrations of added Cr (0.4 and 2.0 mg of Cr/kg) plus a Cr-unsupplemented control diet. The results showed that dietary Cr supplementation tended to increase the breast muscle percentage compared with the Cr-unsupplemented control group (P = 0.0784), while Cr from CrPic tended to have higher breast muscle percentage compared with Cr from CrCl3 (P = 0.0881). Chromium from CrPic also tended to increase the breast intramuscular fat (IMF) compared with Cr from CrCl3 (P = 0.0648). In addition, supplementation of 0.4 mg/kg Cr tended to decrease low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (P = 0.0614). Compared with the control group, broilers fed Cr-supplemented diets had higher triglyceride (TG) (P = 0.0129) regardless of Cr source and Cr concentration. Chromium from CrPro and CrPic had lower total cholesterol (TC) compared with Cr from CrCl3 (P = 0.0220). These results indicate that dietary supplementation of Cr has effects on carcass characteristics and serum lipid parameters of broilers under normal rearing conditions, while supplementation of organic Cr can improve carcass characteristics and reduce the cholesterol content in serum.

Abstract
PCB126 (3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl) is a potent aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist and induces oxidative stress. Because liver manganese (Mn) levels decrease in response to PCB126, a Mn dietary study was designed to investigate the role of Mn in PCB126 toxicity. Male Sprague Dawley rats received diets containing 0, 10, or 150 ppm added Mn for 3 weeks, followed by a single ip injection of corn oil or PCB126 (5 µmol/kg body weight). After 2 weeks, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Fe levels in the heart, liver, and liver mitochondria, and Mn-containing superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and metallothionein mRNA, MnSOD protein, and MnSOD activity were determined. Mn levels in liver, heart, and liver mitochondria were strongly decreased by the Mn-deficient diet. Small effects on Fe levels and a stepwise increase in MnSOD activity with dietary Mn were also visible. PCB126 caused profound changes in Cu (up), Zn, Fe, and Mn (down) in liver, but not in heart, and differing effects (Cu, Zn, and Fe up, Mn down) in liver mitochondria. Liver MnSOD and metallothionein mRNA levels and MnSOD protein were increased but MnSOD activity was decreased by PCB126. PCB126-induced liver enlargement was dose-dependently reduced with increasing dietary Mn. These changes in metals homeostasis and MnSOD activity in liver but not heart may be a/the mechanism of PCB126 liver-specific toxicity. Specifically, transport of Fenton metals (Cu, Fe) into and Mn out of the mitochondria, a probable mechanism for lower MnSOD activity, may be a/the cause of PCB126-induced oxidative stress. The role of metallothioneins needs further evaluation. Dietary Mn slightly alleviated PCB126-induced toxicities.

AbstractTo investigate the effect of Mn on antioxidant status and expression levels of heat-shock proteins/factors in tissues of laying broiler breeders subjected to heat challenge, we used a completely randomised design (n 6) with a factorial arrangement of 2 environmental temperatures (normal, 21 (sem 1)°C and high, 32 (sem 1)°C)×3 dietary Mn treatments (an Mn-unsupplemented basal diet (CON), or a basal diet supplemented with 120 mg Mn/kg diet as inorganic Mn sulphate (iMn) or organic Mn proteinate (oMn)). There were no interactions (P>0·10) between environmental temperature and dietary Mn in all of the measured indices. High temperature decreased (P<0·003) Mn content, and also tended (P=0·07) to decrease copper zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) activity in the liver and heart. However, an increased manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) activity (P<0·05) and a slight increase of malondialdehyde level (P=0·06) were detected in breast muscle. An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of environmental temperature and dietary Mn on egg production performance, egg quality, and some plasma biochemical traits of broiler breeders. A completely randomized factorial design involved 2 environmental temperatures (a normal temperature, 21 ± 1°C, and a high temperature, 32 ± 1°C) × 3 dietary Mn treatments (a Mn-unsupplemented corn–soybean meal basal diet or the basal diet supplemented with 120 mg of Mn/kg of diet as either MnSO4·H2O or manganese proteinate). There were 6 treatments with 6 replicates (4 birds per replicate). High temperature decreased egg weight (P < 0.0001), laying rate (P < 0.0001), egg yield (P < 0.0001), feed intake (P < 0.0001), egg:feed ratio (P < 0.0001), eggshell strength (P < 0.05) and thickness (P < 0.0001), plasma triiodothyronine level (P < 0.05), and alkaline phosphatase activity (P < 0.04) whereas it increased rectal temperature (P < 0.0001); plasma malondialdehyde level (P < 0.02); and activities (P < 0.002) of lactic dehydrogenase, aspartate aminotransferase, and creatine kinase. Broiler breeders fed the diets supplemented with Mn regardless of source had greater (P < 0.05) eggshell strength and lower (P ≤ 0.05) plasma triiodothyronine level and protein carbonyl content than those fed the control diet. The broiler breeders fed the diet supplemented with the organic Mn had greater (P < 0.01) eggshell thickness than those fed the control diet. There were interactions (P < 0.05) between environmental temperature and dietary Mn in laying rate, egg yield, feed intake, and egg:feed ratio. Under normal temperature, dietary Mn did not affect the above 4 parameters; however, under high temperature, broiler breeders fed the diet supplemented with the organic Mn showed greater (P < 0.03) improvements in these 4 parameters than those fed the control diet. The results from this study indicated that high temperature significantly impaired egg production performance and eggshell quality and induced lipid peroxidation and tissue damage whereas dietary supplementation of either organic or inorganic Mn improved eggshell strength and thermotolerance and reduced protein oxidation and that the organic Mn could alleviate the negative effect of high temperature on egg production performance of broiler breeders at the period of 32 to 45 wk of age.

Abstract
A total of 600 Ross 308-day-old male broiler chicks were used in a 28 day digestibility study to investigate the interaction between dietary calcium (Ca) and non-phytate phosphorus (nPP) on the digestibility of minerals and amino acids. Diets were formulated to be nutritionally adequate except for Ca and nPP. Fifteen mash diets based on corn and soya bean meal with varying concentrations of Ca (6.4 to 12.0 g/kg) and nPP (2.4 to 7.0 g/kg) were used. Diets were clustered around total densities of Ca and nPP of 12, 13.5 or 15.0 (g/kg) and within each density, a range of five Ca : nPP ratios (1.14 : 1, 1.5 : 1, 2.0 : 1, 2.75 : 1 and 4.0 : 1) were fed. Birds had free access to feed and water throughout the study. At day 28, birds were euthanised for the determination of apparent ileal mineral and amino acid digestibility. Data were modelled in R version 2.15 using a linear mixed-effects model and interrogation of the data was performed by fitting a low order polynomial function. At high Ca concentrations, increasing nPP led to an increase in the apparent digestibility of minerals. Apparent ileal digestibility of phosphorus (P) was enhanced with increasing dietary nPP up to 5.5 g/kg beyond which no improvements were found. Maximal Ca digestibility was found in diets with >8.0 g/kg Ca with concomitant low concentrations of nPP. Diets with a broader Ca : nPP ratio improved the digestibility of Ca but were deleterious to the digestibility of P. In this study, apparent digestibility of amino acids was broadly unaffected by dietary Ca and nPP concentrations. However, interactions between Ca and nPP were observed for the digestibility of glutamine, tyrosine and methionine (all P<0.001). Nitrogen digestibility showed discrete optima around 10.0 and 5.0 g/kg nPP and Na digestibility was maximised around 8 to 9.0 g/kg Ca and 4.5 to 5.4 g/kg nPP. These data show that the ratio of Ca : nPP is more influential to mineral digestibility than the absolute dietary concentration of each macro mineral.

Abstract
The major goals of the poultry industry are to increase the carcass yield and to reduce carcass fatness, mainly the abdominal fat pad. The increase in poultry meat consumption has guided the selection process toward fast-growing broilers with a reduced feed conversion ratio. Intensive selection has led to great improvements in economic traits such as body weight gain, feed efficiency, and breast yield to meet the demands of consumers, but modern commercial chickens exhibit excessive fat accumulation in the abdomen area. However, dietary composition and feeding strategies may offer practical and efficient solutions for reducing body fat deposition in modern poultry strains. Thus, the regulation of lipid metabolism to reduce the abdominal fat content based on dietary composition and feeding strategy, as well as elucidating their effects on the key enzymes associated with lipid metabolism, could facilitate the production of lean meat and help to understand the fat-lowering effects of diet and different feeding strategies.

Abstract
An experiment was carried out to determine the bioavailability of organic Fe as Fe proteinate (Alltech, Nicholasville, KY) relative to inorganic Fe source (FeSO4•7H2O) for broiler chicks fed a casein-dextrose diet. A total of 448 1-d-old Arbor Acres commercial male broiler chicks were randomly allotted to 1 of 8 replicate cages (8 chicks per cage) for each of 7 treatments in a completely randomized design involving a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments with 2 Fe sources (Fe proteinate and Fe sulfate) and 3 levels of added Fe (10, 20, or 40 mg of Fe/kg) plus a Fe-unsupplemented control diet containing 4.56 mg of Fe/kg by analysis. Feed and distilled-deionized water were available ad libitum for an experimental phase of 14 d. At 14 d of age, blood samples were collected for testing hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit, and calculating total body Hb Fe, whereas liver and kidney samples were excised for Fe analyses. The results showed that ADG, ADFI, blood Hb, hematocrit, and total body Hb Fe and Fe concentrations in liver and kidney increased linearly (P < 0.0001), whereas mortality decreased linearly (P < 0.0001) as dietary Fe level increased. However, only blood Hb concentration and total body Hb Fe differed (P < 0.004) between the 2 Fe sources. Based on slope ratios from the multiple linear regression of Hb concentration and total body Hb Fe on daily intake of analyzed dietary Fe, the bioavailability of Fe proteinate relative to FeSO4•7H2O (100%) was 117 and 114%, respectively (P < 0.009). The results indicated that blood Hb concentration and total body Hb Fe were sensitive indices in reflecting differences in bioavailability among different Fe sources, and Fe proteinate was significantly more available to broilers than inorganic Fe sulfate in enhancing Hb concentration and total body Hb Fe.

Abstract
We carried out a proteomic analysis of THP-1-derived macrophages with and without Brucella abortus A19 (B. abortus A19) infection in order to study the cellular responses to B. abortus A19. The proteins were analyzed at different time points after infection with 2DE followed by MALDI-TOF/TOF identification. Comparative analysis of multiple 2DE gels revealed that the majority of changes in protein abundance appeared between 48 and 96 h after infection. MS identified 44 altered proteins, including 20 proteins increased in abundance and 24 proteins decreased in abundance, which were found to be involved in cytoskeleton, signal transduction, energy metabolism, host macromolecular biosynthesis, and stress response. Moreover, 22 genes corresponding to the altered proteins were quantified by real-time RT-PCR to examine the transcriptional profiles between infected and uninfected THP-1-derived macrophages. Finally, we mapped the altered pathways and networks using ingenuity pathway analysis, which suggested that the altered protein species were heavily favored germ cell-Sertoli cell junction signaling as the primary pathway. Furthermore, mechanisms of viral exit from host cell and macrophage stimulating protein-recepteur d'origine nantais signaling appeared to be major pathways modulated in infected cells. This study effectively provides useful dynamic protein-related information concerning B. abortus infection in macrophages.

Abstract
An experiment is conducted to investigate the effects of selenium (Se) source and level on growth performance, tissue Se concentrations, antioxidation, and immune functions of heat-stressed broilers from 22 to 42 days of age. A total of 210 22-day-old Arbor Acres commercial male chicks were assigned by body weight to one of seven treatments with six replicates of five birds each in a completely randomized design involving a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement plus one Se-unsupplemented basal diet control (containing 0.027 mg of Se/kg). The three Se sources were sodium selenite (Na₂SeO₃), Se yeast, and AMMS Se (Se protein), and the two supplemental Se levels were 0.15 or 0.30 mg Se/kg. All birds were reared under heat-stressed condition (33 ± 1 °C during 0900-1700 hours and 27 ± 1 °C during 1900-0700 hours with a relative humidity of 60-80 %). The results showed that heat-stressed chicks fed Se-supplemented diets had higher (P < 0.10) average daily feed intake, Se concentrations in liver and breast muscle, liver glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity, serum antibody titers against H5N1(Re-4 strain), H5N1(Re-5 strain) and lower (P < 0.01) mortality compared with the control. Chicks fed the diets supplemented with 0.30 mg/kg of Se had higher (P < 0.05) Se concentrations in liver and breast muscle, liver GSH-Px activity, and serum antibody titer against H5N1 (Re-4 strain) than those fed the diets supplemented with 0.15 mg/kg of Se. Broilers fed the diets supplemented with Se yeast had higher (P < 0.001) Se concentrations in liver and breast muscle than those fed the diets supplemented with Na₂SeO₃ or AMMS Se. However, broilers fed the diets supplemented with AMMS Se had higher (P < 0.05) serum antibody titers against H5N1 (Re-4 strain) and H5N1 (Re-5 strain) than those fed the diets supplemented with Na₂SeO₃. These results indicated that Se yeast was more effective than Na₂SeO₃ or AMMS Se in increasing tissue Se retention; however, AMMS Se was more effective than Na₂SeO₃ or Se yeast in improving immune functions of heat-stressed broilers.
