Abstract
This research focused on the molecular diversity of A. carambola collected from three Brazilian biomes (Cerrado, Amazônia, and Mata Atlântica), whose results revealed significant differences in metabolite profiles among these biomes through PSI-MS analysis. Chemometric analysis provided valuable insights into the clustering patterns and metabolic distinctions. Cerrado and Mata Atlântica biomes exhibited a 70 % similarity, indicating a notable degree of resemblance. In Cerrado, carambolaside A was notably abundant, while carambolaside M was low in Amazônia and moderate in Cerrado samples. Carambolaside B was abundant in Amazônia but relatively low in the Cerrado and Mata Atlântica. In contrast, the Amazônia biome samples appeared to be more dissimilar. In Cerrado, epicatechin, kaempferol, and procyanidin B showed lower abundance, while apigenin, quercetin, myricetin, and rutin displayed moderate levels. Mata Atlântica showed relatively higher levels of kaempferol, quercetin, and rutin. This study indicated the environmental influence on secondary metabolites production in A. carambola fruits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperlipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and hyperglycemia are common metabolic complications of obesity. The objective of the present study is to investigate the in vivo protective effect of Averrhoa carambola L. fruit polyphenols (ACFP) on hyperlipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and hyperglycemia in mice with high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and elucidate the mechanisms of action underlying the beneficial effects of ACFP. Thirty-six specific pathogen-free male C57BL/6J mice (4 weeks old, weighing 17.1-19.9 g) were randomly divided into three groups and fed with a low-fat diet (LFD, 10% fat energy), HFD (45% fat energy), or HFD supplemented with ACFP by intragastric administration for 14 weeks. Obesity-related biochemical indexes and hepatic gene expression levels were determined. The statistical analyses were conducted using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan's multiple range test. RESULTS The results showed that the body weight gain, serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, glucose, insulin resistance index, and steatosis grade in the ACFP group decreased by 29.57%, 26.25%, 27.4%, 19.6%, 40.32%, and 40%, respectively, compared to the HFD group. Gene expression analysis indicated that ACFP treatment improved the gene expression profiles involved in lipid and glucose metabolism compared to the HFD group. CONCLUSION ACFP protected from HFD-induced obesity and obesity-associated hyperlipidemia, hepatic steatosis, and hyperglycemia by improving lipid and glucose metabolism in mice. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The Averrhoa carambola L. tree encompasses a myriad of phytochemicals contributing to its nutritional and health benefits. The current study aims at investigating the A. carambola L. the metabolite profile grown in tropical and temperate regions represented by fruit and stem, for the first time using UPLC/MS-based molecular networking and chemometrics. Asides, assessment of the immunostimulatory effect of ripe fruit and stem, was compared in relation to metabolite fingerprints. Eighty metabolites were identified, 8 of which are first-time to be reported including 3 dihydrochalcone-C-glycosides, 4 flavonoids, and one phenolic. Multivariate data analysis revealed dihydrochalcones as origin-discriminating metabolites between temperate and tropical grown fruits. Further, an in vivo immunomodulatory assay in a cyclosporine A-induced rat model revealed a potential immune-enhancing effect as manifested by down-regulation of inflammatory markers (IL-6, INF-γ, IL-1, TLR4, and ESR) concurrent with the up-regulation of CD4 level and the CD4/CD8 ratio. Moreover, both extracts suppressed elevation of liver and kidney functions in serum as well as reduction in oxidative stress with concurrent increased levels of T-protein, albumin, globulin, and A/G ratio. This study pinpoints differences in secondary metabolite profiles amongst A. carambola L. accessions from different origins and organ type and its immunomodulatory action mechanisms.

Abstract
The H1N1 influenza virus is highly infectious and pathogenic, and in recent years, it has often presented seasonal mass outbreaks of infection. People infected with H1N1 will develop a high fever and other respiratory infection symptoms. If not treated in time, complications such as pneumonia may occur. In this study, we focused on developing drugs that can effectively fight against with H1N1 virus. A flavonoid glycoside was extracted from the carambola, then characterized by HR-ESI-MS with the molecular formula C47H58O2, and named carambolaside W. The flavonoid glycosides were found to have good anti-H1N1 influenza virus effects. In this study, we verified that carambolaside W has low toxicity and can effectively inhibit influenza virus replication in vitro. H1N1 virus infection induces intracellular oxidative stress damage to accelerate disease progression. The results showed that carambolaside W effectively inhibited the oxidative stress caused by H1N1 infection. The Western blot assay also revealed that carambolaside W alters the expression of apoptosis-related proteins in vitro and exerts a good anti-H1N1 influenza virus effect. In summary, carambolaside W is a low-toxicity natural flavonoid that can effectively treat the H1N1 influenza virus as a potential anti-H1N1 virus agent.

Abstract
We detail a case of a 74-year-old female with a history of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) who initially presented to the Emergency Department (ED) with intractable hiccups after ingesting two whole starfruit (SF) and quickly became critically ill while in the ED. Our patient was admitted and received several rounds of hemodialysis, but efforts proved futile, as the patient expired during her hospital course. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fatality reported due to SF ingestion in the U.S, and highlights the need for both a better understanding of SF intoxication and clearer guidelines and timing for treatment. Due to the increased mortality of patients who consume SF with a medical history of CKD or DM, it is prudent that Emergency Physicians are familiar with the clinical presentation and management options for SF toxicity.

Abstract
Natural bioactive compounds play an important role in the prevention of various diseases. The exotic fruits Averrhoa carambola L. (star fruit), Cyphomandra betacea (tamarillo) and Myrciaria dubia (camu-camu) can be valuable sources of phytochemicals with antioxidant properties. The aim of this study has been to compare the antioxidant properties of these exotic fruits, the structure of polyphenolic compounds and the content of vitamin C and β-carotene. All the juices were analyzed for their antioxidant capacity (DPPH and ABTS assays) and the composition of phenolic compounds (TP and FBBB assays, total flavonoid content, total anthocyanins). In addition, HPLC assays were performed to analyse the content of phenolic acids, flavonoids, vitamin C and β-carotene. The results demonstrated that juice from the Myrciaria dubia fruit had the highest antioxidant capacity, which was 4.5-fold higher than that of juice from Averrhola carambola L., and nearly 7-fold higher than the antioxidant capacity of Cyphomandra betacea fruit juice. Additionally, juice from the camu-camu fruit had a 3- to 4-fold higher total polyphenol content (8290 ± 254 mg GAE L-1) and a high level of vitamin C (8410.8 ± 16.9 mg AA kg-1). In turn, tamarillo juice had a high content of total anthocyanins (5796 mg CGE L-1) and phenolic acids (mostly chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid). Juice produced from carambola had a high content of total flavonoids (1345 mg CAE L-1), and the composition of these compounds was dominated by flavanols (epicatechin). The research results justify the conclusion that fruits of Myrciaria dubia, Averrhoa carambola L., Cyphomandra betacea are rich sources of bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties, and in the near future may serve as healthful food ingredients.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a life-threatening disorder affecting people of all ages and adversely disrupts their daily functions. Despite the availability of numerous synthetic-antidiabetic medications and insulin, the demand for the development of novel antidiabetic medications is increasing due to the adverse effects and growth of resistance to commercial drugs in the long-term usage. Hence, antidiabetic phytochemicals isolated from fruit plants can be a very nifty option to develop life-saving novel antidiabetic therapeutics, employing several pathways and MoAs (mechanism of actions). This review focuses on the antidiabetic potential of commonly available Bangladeshi fruits and other plant parts, such as seeds, fruit peals, leaves, and roots, along with isolated phytochemicals from these phytosources based on lab findings and mechanism of actions. Several fruits, such as orange, lemon, amla, tamarind, and others, can produce remarkable antidiabetic actions and can be dietary alternatives to antidiabetic therapies. Besides, isolated phytochemicals from these plants, such as swertisin, quercetin, rutin, naringenin, and other prospective phytochemicals, also demonstrated their candidacy for further exploration to be established as antidiabetic leads. Thus, it can be considered that fruits are one of the most valuable gifts of plants packed with a wide spectrum of bioactive phytochemicals and are widely consumed as dietary items and medicinal therapies in different civilizations and cultures. This review will provide a better understanding of diabetes management by consuming fruits and other plant parts as well as deliver innovative hints for the researchers to develop novel drugs from these plant parts and/or their phytochemicals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to highlight the potential serious complications of acute kidney injury (AKI) resulting from the consumption of excessive amounts of starfruit, a common traditional remedy.
CASE SUMMARY A 78-year-old male with a past medical history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia without prior nephropathy presented to the emergency department (ED) with hiccups, nausea, vomiting and generalized weakness. In the preceding 1 wk, he had consumed 3 bottles of concentrated juice self-prepared from 1 kg of small sour starfruits. His serum creatinine was noted to be 1101 μmol/L from baseline normal prior to his ED visit. He was diagnosed with AKI secondary to excessive starfruit consumption.
CONCLUSION Consumption of starfruit can cause acute renal failure, with a good outcome when promptly identified and treated.

Abstract
Wound healing is a sophisticated process that results in the repair of damaged tissues. Any impairment to this process can lead to non-healing (chronic) wounds. Since these can cause a massive burden on the healthcare system, alternative therapies that promote wound healing should be considered. Therapies of natural origins that are safe and with no adverse side effects are especially promising. Vietnam, a tropical-climate country, has many medicinal plants that possess the potential for healing wounds. This report explores the use of some common plants used in Traditional Vietnamese medicine and their molecular mechanisms.

Abstract
Tropical fruits are defined as fruits that are grown in hot and humid regions within the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, covering most of the tropical and subtropical areas of Asia, Africa, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Oceania. Depending on the cultivation area covered, economic value and popularity these tropical fruits are divided into major and minor tropical fruits. There is an annual increment of 3.8% in terms of commercialization of the tropical fruits. In total 26 minor tropical fruits (Kiwifruit, Lutqua, Carambola, Tree Tomato, Elephant apple, Rambutan, Bay berry, Mangosteen, Bhawa, Loquat, Silver berry, Durian, Persimon, Longan, Passion fruit, Water apple, Pulasan, Indian gooseberry, Guava, Lychee, Annona, Pitaya, Sapodilla, Pepino, Jaboticaba, Jackfruit) have been covered in this work. The nutritional composition, phytochemical composition, health benefits, traditional use of these minor tropical fruits and their role in food fortification have been portrayed.

Abstract
Averrhoa carambola L. (star fruit) is an edible fruit that is extensively cultivated in southern China, Southeast Asia, India, and northern South America. It has a sweet and juicy taste and is frequently used in fruit salads and fruit platters, as a garnish in cocktail drinks and beverages, or squeezed into juice and served as a beverage. Traditionally, it has been used for treating diabetes and diabetic nephropathy, arthralgia, vomiting, lithangiuria, coughing, hangovers, and chronic paroxysmal headache for thousands of years. Currently, approximately 132 compounds have been isolated from A. carambola. Among them, flavonoids, benzoquinone, and their glycosides have been considered as biologically active substances, which are responsible for various biological activities. Pharmacological studies have revealed that crude extracts or monomeric compounds from A. carambola exhibit multiple bioactivities, such as anti-oxidant, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-obesity, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, anti-hypertensive, neuroprotective, and others. Thus, A. carambola is a valuable treatment in Chinese medicine with therapeutic potential for multiple diseases, especially diabetes and diabetes-related diseases. Even though it is a very promising candidate in the development of functional food and the pharmaceutical industry, reports on its bioactivities have only been conducted in vivo and in vitro and there is a gap in research regarding clinical settings and safety. This review therefore provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of current progress on botany, ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicity of A. carambola, providing a valuable reference for further developments and applications of A. carambola in the pharmaceutical industry and functional food.

Abstract
Star fruit (Averrhoa carambola), a popular fruit in many parts of the world, is considered to have many beneficial nutritional and medicinal effects. However, harmful nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effects have also been described. In this review, we have discussed the reported beneficial effects of star fruit, explored the potential mechanisms for such beneficial effects, and outline factors that may affect the safe level of consumption. The beneficial effects include the following: antioxidant (mediated via L-ascorbic acid, epicatechin, and gallic acid), hypoglycemic (mediated via high fiber levels and 2-dodecyl-6-methoxycyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione), hypotensive (mediated via apigenin), hypocholesterolemic (mediated via micronized fiber), anti-inflammatory, anti-infective, antitumor effects, and immune-boosting effects. The presence of chronic kidney disease, gastroenteropathies, chronic pancreatitis, dehydration, consumption on an empty stomach, and higher concentration of oxalate in fruit/juice consumed predisposes to toxicity. The level of ingestion at which the beneficial effects transition to nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity is still to be accurately ascertained. Furthermore, the relationship between the amount of star fruit ingested and the severity of toxicity is not certain and warrants further study.

Abstract
Purpose To present a model to reproduce the clinical condition, in order to better
understand the pathophysiology of neurological impairment related to
intoxication. Methods Twenty-five Wistar rats were used and divided into five groups: Shaw group
(WHI), water gavage group (WGV), star fruit gavage group (SGV), nephropathic
group with water gavage (NPW), nephropathic group with star fruit gavage
(NPS).Nephropathic groups were submitted to surgery, developing nephropathy.
After surgery, they received preestablished gavage with star fruit juice or
water. The electroencephalographic records were evaluated in the
experimental nephropathic group that received gavage of star fruit
juice. Results To assess the induction of neurotoxicity using electroencephalographic data,
the NPS group demonstrated the presence of epileptic seizures associated
with star fruit intoxication. Conclusions The experimental model herein presented was adequate to reproduce the
clinical condition experienced by nephropathic patients who ingest star
fruit juice, establishing, thus, an experimental model utterly important for
the study of the neurological toxicity process.

Abstract
Star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) is a popular fruit in many tropical countries, including Sri Lanka. It is rich in oxalic acid, which is nephrotoxic in higher concentrations. The development of both acute (AKI) and chronic kidney injury after oxalate nephropathy is often underrecognized. Here we discuss the risk factors, clinical features, treatment, and outcomes of 4 patients who developed AKI after star fruit ingestion. Baseline clinical characteristics, the amount of star fruit ingested, clinical presentation, investigation, and outcome of the patients (ages 28, 50, 54, and 55 y; all male) were traced. More common symptoms of acute star fruit intoxication were nausea, vomiting, and abdominal and back pain, followed by low urine output and high serum creatinine over hours to days. Urinary analysis of all patients demonstrated oxalate crystals. Histopathologic examination of renal tissues of all 4 patients revealed acute tubular damage with calcium oxalate crystals, interstitial edema, and inflammatory cellular infiltration. The presence of calcium oxalate crystals was further confirmed with the brilliant birefringence seen under polarized light. Two patients needed intermittent hemodialysis over a week owing to oliguria and uremia. The other 2 patients did not require hemodialysis and had improvement of renal function with supportive treatment. All had high renal function on discharge but were back to normal within a month. This study highlights AKI as a serious complication of star fruit ingestion. The type and quantity of star fruit ingested and some patient factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of AKI. Public education about this serious uncommon complication is important.

Abstract
Dihydrochalcones are a subclass of flavonoids. There has been growing interest in dihydrochalcones for their health benefits and potential to modulate flavor, but their comprehensive profile in diverse plant species is lacking. Star fruit is a tropical fruit rich in dihydrochalcones. In this study, a systematic annotation using UHPLC/Q-Orbitrap-MS and molecular networking was established to rapidly identify dihydrochalcones in 12 star fruit cultivars. A total of 53 dihydrochalcones were characterized within a short retention time including one novel compound (phloretin-3'-C-(2-O-trans-p-coumaroyl)-β-d-fucopyranoside) and 23 compounds identified from the Averrhoa genus for the first time. 3-Hydroxyphloretin was the most abundant dihydrochalcone in star fruit. All the identified dihydrochalcones had a higher abundance in leaves compared to fruits. This is the first report that systematically investigates dihydrochalcones in star fruit of multiple cultivars, and the results could provide a useful reference for the future development and utilization of plant genetic resources.

Abstract
The star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) is consumed in high amounts in Asia and Central/South America. It contains oxalic acid and caramboxin. In some individuals, its ingestion may lead to nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. The nephrotoxic effect is due to oxalate deposition in renal tubules resulting in acute tubular necrosis and interstitial nephritis. Although uraemic encephalopathy secondary to acute kidney injury may play a role, a shift to an excitatory state of the central nervous system (CNS) by caramboxin through activation of excitatory neuroreceptors and inhibition of GABA receptors leads to mental confusion, seizures and status epilepticus seen with star fruit intoxication. In this mini-review, we discuss the mechanisms of star fruit-related toxicity.

Abstract
Aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of star fruit (Averrhoa carambola L.) by-products (peel and residue) on stability of sesame (Sesamum indicum) oil against oxidation. Antioxidant properties of extract of peel and residue at different time durations of extraction were determined and found that peel contains higher antioxidant potential than residue. Thus, extract of peel obtained after 24 h extraction was used to study its effectiveness on oxidative stability of sesame oil during accelerated oven storage and frying using the butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) (200 ppm) as the reference antioxidant (positive control) and oil without added antioxidant as the negative control. The oxidative stability of the oil was determined by evaluating peroxide value, p-anisidine value, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value, total oxidation (TOTOX) value, conjugated diene (CD) and conjugated triene (CT) values, and iodine value. Peel extract at different concentrations (200-1000 ppm) was tested. The oil added with peel extract exhibited higher stability against oxidation than the controls during oven storage test. Extract at 1000 ppm significantly increased the stability of sesame oil during frying as compared with controls. Thus, star fruit peel extract could be an alternative to synthetic antioxidants to suppress oxidation of edible oils.

Abstract
Averrhoa carambola is commonly known as star fruit because of its peculiar shape, and its fruit is a rich source of minerals and vitamins. It is also used in traditional medicines in countries such as India, China, the Philippines, and Brazil for treating various ailments, including fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and skin disease. Here, we present the first draft genome of the Oxalidaceae family, with an assembled genome size of 470.51 Mb. In total, 24,726 protein-coding genes were identified, and 16,490 genes were annotated using various well-known databases. The phylogenomic analysis confirmed the evolutionary position of the Oxalidaceae family. Based on the gene functional annotations, we also identified enzymes that may be involved in important nutritional pathways in the star fruit genome. Overall, the data from this first sequenced genome in the Oxalidaceae family provide an essential resource for nutritional, medicinal, and cultivational studies of the economically important star-fruit plant.

Abstract
Stingless bee honey produced by Heterotrigona itama from different botanical origins was characterised and discriminated. Three types of stingless bee honey collected from acacia, gelam, and starfruit nectars were analyzed and compared with Apis mellifera honey. The results showed that stingless bee honey samples from the three different botanical origins were significantly different in terms of their moisture content, pH, free acidity, total soluble solids, colour characteristics, sugar content, amino acid content and antioxidant properties. Stingless bee honey was significantly different from Apis mellifera honey in terms of physicochemical and antioxidant properties. The amino acid content was further used in the chemometrics analysis to evaluate the role of amino acid in discriminating honey according to botanical origin. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) revealed that the stingless bee honey was completely distinguishable from Apis mellifera honey. Notably, a clear distinction between the stingless bee honey types was also observed. The specific amino acids involved in the distinction of honey were cysteine for acacia and gelam, phenylalanine and 3-hydroxyproline for starfruit, and proline for Apis mellifera honey. The results showed that all honey samples were successfully classified based on amino acid content.

Abstract
Background Star fruit is a popular medicinal fruit in the tropics. Its hypoglycaemic properties are considered useful in achieving glycaemic control in diabetes. Star fruit induced nephrotoxicity is a rare cause of acute kidney injury in individuals with both normal and reduced baseline renal function. We present three cases of acute kidney injury due to star fruit nephrotoxicity from Sri Lanka, and discuss the published literature on this topic. Case presentation Three Sri Lankan patients, all with a background of diabetes, presented to us with acute nausea and anorexia following recent consumption of star fruit. Two patients complained of diarrhoea and one patient complained of intractable hiccoughs. They all had elevated serum creatinine on admission. Two were known to have normal baseline serum creatinine levels. On renal biopsy two had evidence of oxalate crystal deposition. One did not show crystal deposition but had acute interstitial nephritis for which no alternate cause could be identified. Two were treated with short courses of prednisolone and two required acute haemodialysis. All recovered renal function, with both patients with known baselines approaching their premorbid serum creatinine levels. Conclusion Consumption of star fruit, especially on an empty stomach or in a state of dehydration may precipitate acute kidney injury. A history of star fruit ingestion must be actively looked for in patients presenting with unexplained acute kidney injury. The use of star fruit as a therapy for diabetes should be discouraged.
