Abstract
OBJECTIVES Renal impairment and some systemic diseases are associated with hearing loss (HL) in adults. However, studies of these relationship in adolescents are rare. The objective of this study was to determine the association between HL and renal or systemic disease in adolescents. METHODS Subjects were extracted from the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2012. We included adolescents aged 10-19 years old with normal tympanic membrane and those who underwent a physical and laboratory examination and pure tone audiometry. HL, high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL), albuminuria, impaired glomerular filtration rate, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity were evaluated based on the data. RESULTS Individuals with microalbuminruia (MIA) exhibited higher prevalence of HL (p = 0.003) and HFHL (p = 0.012) than those without MIA. The prevalence of HL and HFHL appeared to increase according to the severity of albuminuria. Additionally, individuals with HL or HFHL showed lower transferrin saturation (TSAT) than individuals without HL (p = 0.002) or HFHL (p = 0.001). And, HFHL was associated with lower ferritin levels (p = 0.017). HL and HFHL were related to MIA (p = 0.004 and p = 0.022, respectively) and TSAT (p = 0.005 and p = 0.011, respectively) after controlling other factors. CONCLUSION MIA and TSAT level were independently associated with the HL and HFHL. Since MIA can be easily detected by dipstick test and urine analysis, hearing evaluations for individuals with MIA might be helpful to identify hearing impairments earlier in adolescents. Abstract
Iron deficiency is a highly prevalent condition, which contributes to unnecessary morbidity, mortality, and health inequity. A serum ferritin concentration of less than 30 μg/L has a high specificity and sensitivity for diagnosing iron deficiency in adults, but the laboratory reported lower limit of normal (LLN) is typically lower. These LLNs might not be rooted in rigorous scientific evidence and might be contributing to structural underdiagnosis of iron deficiency. A systematic review was done per systematic reviews and meta-analysis guidelines with the use of medical literature databases from inception of each database to Nov 30, 2021, to identify studies that determined ferritin reference intervals in healthy adults and grey literature search for the five most common ferritin assays (registration number CRD42022268844). The objectives were to systematically summarise the ferritin reference intervals and to do a methodological quality assessment of the included studies. 2306 studies were screened and 61 full texts were included. 37 studies were eligible for analysis of the ferritin LLN in the general population. The population the sample was comprised of was a total of 21 882 females and 23 650 males participants. The ferritin LLN was a median of 8 μg/L (IQR 5-15) and mean of 9 μg/L (SD 11) in females and a median of 25 μg/L (IQR 16-44) and mean of 25 μg/L (SD 29) in males. 30 (49%) of 61 studies did not explicitly screen for patients at risk of iron deficiency, and 32 (52%) did not refer to a reference interval establishment guideline (eg, guideline recommended by Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute). The five most used commercial ferritin laboratory assays reported reference intervals with a median LLN of 11 (IQR 9-12) and mean of 9 μg/L (SD 4) for females and median of 22 (IQR 22-24) and mean of 23 μg/L (SD 4) for males. In the literature, serum ferritin reference intervals in healthy adults consistently report a LLN of less than 30 μg/L. Data driving these ferritin reference intervals are at high risk of bias, given no exclusion of individuals at risk for iron deficiency in the presumed normal population sample and no adherence to reference interval establishment standards. We suggest the use of evidence-based laboratory clinical decision limits to diagnose iron deficiency.

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in pregnancy is a common diagnosis that is associated with adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes. There remains uncertainty regarding how best to screen for, prevent, and treat established IDA in pregnancy. There is no consensus on the benefits of routine iron supplementation in pregnancy, with concerns regarding potential harmful effects of routine iron supplementation in women who are iron replete. Fourteen international guidelines were selected and appraised and compared by a multidisciplinary team. The AGREE II GRS tool was used. Each reviewer independently made their own assessment, and the scores from 1 to 7 were also collated and averaged for an overall score incorporating seven domains: process of development, clarity of presentation, completeness of reporting, clinical validity, and overall quality. The reviewers' scores were also individually compared according to discipline. The mean score across all the guidelines was 4.4 (range 3.5-6.5). Only half of the guidelines recommend routine iron in pregnancy. In terms of screening recommendations, five guidelines recommend screening with ferritin in addition to a full blood count in pregnancy, two recommend selective screening with ferritin for at risk groups only, and one guideline suggests using ferritin where feasible. Although many of the guidelines recommend similar doses of oral elemental iron of 100-200 mg daily for the treatment of established IDA in pregnancy, two recommend twice or three times daily dosing. Only five guidelines give hemoglobin rises to expect within specific timeframes. There remains a need to clarify the optimal screening method, dosing regimen, timing, and route of iron supplementation in pregnancy. Robust randomized controlled data are needed to guide appropriate prevention and management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the widespread use of long-acting erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) has facilitated the improvement of anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the improvement in prognosis has not been fully demonstrated. Iron deficiency is associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and the relative iron deficiency induced by erythropoiesis-stimulating agents may prevent the improvement of prognosis. Therefore, we investigated the association between iron deficiency and cardiovascular events during long-acting erythropoiesis-stimulating agent therapy using transferrin saturation (TSAT), which is less susceptible to inflammation than ferritin. METHODS This study included 1040 patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD, aged ≥ 20 years, with a glomerular filtration rate < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and hemoglobin < 11 g/dL, who were treated with darbepoetin alfa for 96 weeks. The patients were recruited in the BRIGHTEN Trial, a multicenter, prospective, observational study conducted to evaluate erythropoiesis-stimulating agent resistance to darbepoetin alfa in treating anemia in non-dialysis-dependent CKD in a clinical setting. The association between transferrin saturation and the cumulative incidence of cardiovascular events was evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method. To calculate the hazard ratio (HR), 95% confidence intervals (CI) and the Cox proportional hazards model were used. RESULTS Survival curve analysis for cardiovascular events indicated that patients with transferrin saturation ≥ 30% had a significantly better prognosis, with an adjusted hazard ratio of 0.34 (95% confidence interval 0.22-0.52). Stratified analysis revealed that patients with transferrin saturation of 30-40% had a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular events than those with transferrin saturation of 20-30%, even after a multivariate-adjusted hazard ratio of 0.33 (95% confidence interval 0.21-0.54). CONCLUSION Patients with CKD and transferrin saturation of 30-40% had significantly fewer cardiovascular events than those with transferrin saturation of 20-30% among patients treated with long-acting erythropoiesis-stimulating agents. Therefore, it may be useful to maintain higher transferrin saturation from the viewpoint of erythropoiesis-stimulating agent responsiveness and the reduction of cardiovascular events.

Abstract
Current understanding of iron-deficient heart failure is based on blood tests that are thought to reflect systemic iron stores, but the available evidence suggests greater complexity. The entry and egress of circulating iron is controlled by erythroblasts, which (in severe iron deficiency) will sacrifice erythropoiesis to supply iron to other organs, e.g. the heart. Marked hypoferraemia (typically with anaemia) can drive the depletion of cardiomyocyte iron, impairing contractile performance and explaining why a transferrin saturation < ≈15%-16% predicts the ability of intravenous iron to reduce the risk of major heart failure events in long-term trials (Type 1 iron-deficient heart failure). However, heart failure may be accompanied by intracellular iron depletion within skeletal muscle and cardiomyocytes, which is disproportionate to the findings of systemic iron biomarkers. Inflammation- and deconditioning-mediated skeletal muscle dysfunction-a primary cause of dyspnoea and exercise intolerance in patients with heart failure-is accompanied by intracellular skeletal myocyte iron depletion, which can be exacerbated by even mild hypoferraemia, explaining why symptoms and functional capacity improve following intravenous iron, regardless of baseline haemoglobin or changes in haemoglobin (Type 2 iron-deficient heart failure). Additionally, patients with advanced heart failure show myocardial iron depletion due to both diminished entry into and enhanced egress of iron from the myocardium; the changes in iron proteins in the cardiomyocytes of these patients are opposite to those expected from systemic iron deficiency. Nevertheless, iron supplementation can prevent ventricular remodelling and cardiomyopathy produced by experimental injury in the absence of systemic iron deficiency (Type 3 iron-deficient heart failure). These observations, taken collectively, support the possibility of three different mechanistic pathways for the development of iron-deficient heart failure: one that is driven through systemic iron depletion and impaired erythropoiesis and two that are characterized by disproportionate depletion of intracellular iron in skeletal and cardiac muscle. These mechanisms are not mutually exclusive, and all pathways may be operative at the same time or may occur sequentially in the same patients.

Abstract
There is a direct correlation between being overweight and iron deficiency. Physiological changes occur in obese adipose cells that contribute to the development of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA). These changes disrupt the normal iron metabolic checks and balances. Furthermore, bariatric surgery can lead to long-term ID and IDA. Oral iron supplementation may not be effective for many of these patients. Intravenous iron infusions can significantly increase the quality of life for individuals experiencing this condition but are also associated with potentially serious complications. Adequate knowledge about intravenous (IV) iron administration can greatly increase the safety of this beneficial therapy. This review article explains the relationship between obesity, ID/IDA, bariatric surgery and the safe administration of IV iron.

Abstract
Ferritin, transferrin, and transferrin receptors I and II play a vital role in iron metabolism, health, and indication of iron deficiency anaemia in fish. To evaluate the use of high-iron diets to prevent or reverse channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) anaemia of unknown causes, we investigated the expression of these iron-regulatory genes and proteins in channel catfish fed plant-based diets. Catfish fingerlings were fed five diets supplemented with 0 (basal), 125, and 250 mg/kg of either inorganic iron or organic iron for 2 weeks. Ferritin, transferrin, and transferrin receptor I and II mRNA and protein expression levels in fish tissues (liver, intestine, trunk kidney, and head kidney) and plasma were determined. Transferrin (iron transporter) and TfR (I and II) genes were generally highly expressed in fish fed the basal diet compared to those fed the iron-supplemented diets. In contrast, ferritin (iron storage) genes were more expressed in the trunk kidney of fish fed the iron-supplemented diets than in those fed the basal diet. Our results demonstrate that supplementing channel catfish plant-based diets with iron from either organic or inorganic iron sources affected the expression of the iron-regulatory genes and increased body iron status in the fish.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a lack of standardization of reference intervals (RIs) for ferritin across laboratories, particularly for postmenopausal women. Depending on the RI used, there can be more than a 4-fold difference in the upper limit of normal between laboratories, resulting in potential misinterpretation. METHODS This retrospective study used a large dataset of blood test results from 25,425 healthy participants aged 18 to 97 over a 7-year period. Exclusion criteria were used to screen out individuals with conditions known to affect iron metabolism or raise ferritin as part of the acute phase response. Distributions were assessed using density and Q-Q plots, and age-banded cut-offs were determined. The non-parametric method was used to establish RIs for sex and age bands. RESULTS For females, 4 age bands were established (18-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60+). For males, 2 bands were identified (18-39 and 40+). Performance against a validation dataset, followed by an expansive validation against an inclusive dataset, demonstrated the robustness of the derived RIs. CONCLUSION This study addresses the inconsistency in serum ferritin RIs by presenting intervals based on demographic parameters. This approach can potentially enhance the accuracy of interpreting serum ferritin levels, assisting clinicians in identifying patients requiring further evaluation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Many children leave the PICU with anemia. The mechanisms of post-PICU anemia are poorly investigated, and treatment of anemia, other than blood, is rarely started during PICU. We aimed to characterize the contributions of iron depletion (ID) and/or inflammation in the development of post-PICU anemia and to explore the utility of hepcidin (a novel iron marker) at detecting ID during inflammation. DESIGN Post hoc analysis of a single-center prospective study (November 2019 to September 2022). SETTING PICU, quaternary center, Canada. PATIENTS Children admitted to PICU with greater than or equal to 48 hours of invasive or greater than or equal to 96 hours of noninvasive ventilation. We excluded patients with preexisting conditions causing anemia or those admitted after cardiac surgery. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Hematological and iron profiles were performed at PICU discharge on 56 participants of which 37 (37/56) were diagnosed with anemia. Thirty-three children (33/56; 59%) were younger than 2 years. Median Pediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction score was 11 (interquartile range, 6-16). Twenty-four of the 37 anemic patients had repeat bloodwork 2 months post-PICU. Of those, four (4/24; 16%) remained anemic. Hematologic profiles were categorized as: anemia of inflammation (AI), iron deficiency anemia (IDA), IDA with inflammation, and ID (low iron stores without anemia). Seven (7/47; 15%) had AI at discharge, and one had persistent AI post-PICU. Three patients (3/47; 6%) had IDA at discharge; of which one was lost to follow-up and the other two were no longer anemic but had ID post-PICU. Eleven additional patients developed ID post-PICU. In the exploratory analysis, we identified a diagnostic cutoff value for ID during inflammation from the receiver operating characteristic curve for hepcidin of 31.9 pg/mL. This cutoff would increase the detection of ID at discharge from 6% to 34%. CONCLUSIONS The burden of ID in children post-PICU is high and better management strategies are required. Hepcidin may increase the diagnostic yield of ID in patients with inflammation.

Abstract
Standard clinical markers can improve tick-borne infection (TBI) diagnoses. We investigated immune and other clinical biomarkers in 110 patients clinically diagnosed with TBIs before (T0) and after antibiotic treatment (T2). At T0, both the initial observation group and patients without seroconversion for tick-borne pathogens exhibited notably low percentages and counts of CD3 percentage (CD3%), CD3+ cells, CD8+ suppressors, CD4 percentage (CD4%), and CD4+ helper cells, with the latter group showing reductions in CD3%, CD3+, and CD8+ counts in approximately 15-22% of cases. Following treatment at the T2 follow-up, patients typically experienced enhancements in their previously low CD3%, CD3+ counts, CD4%, and CD4+ counts; however, there was no notable progress in their low CD8+ counts, and a higher number of patients presented with insufficient transferrin levels. Moreover, among those with negative serology for tick-borne infections, there was an improvement in low CD3% and CD3+ counts, which was more pronounced in patients with deficient transferrin amounts. Among those with CD57+ (n = 37) and CD19+ (n = 101) lymphocyte analysis, 59.46% of patients had a low CD57+ count, 14.85% had a low CD19 count, and 36.63% had a low CD19 percentage (CD19%). Similar findings were observed concerning low CD57+, CD19+, and CD19% markers for negative TBI serology patients. Overall, this study demonstrates that routine standard clinical markers could assist in a TBI diagnosis.

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) can be caused by occult gastrointestinal (GI) blood loss; however, the endoscopic findings in children with anemia are unclear. The study aimed to determine the frequency and factors related to lesions in children with IDA undergoing endoscopy. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and endoscopic findings of children with a laboratory-based diagnosis of IDA. Of 58 patients, 36 (62.1%) had upper GI tract lesions, with erosive gastritis being the most common lesion. Further, 26 patients underwent concomitant colonoscopy, and 12 (46.2%) had lower GI tract lesions. Overall, 44 (75.9%) patients had lesions in either the upper or lower GI tract. Helicobacter pylori infection was detected in 13 patients (22.4%). Patients with lesions found by endoscopy had significantly lower hemoglobin level (8.9 vs. 10.0 g/dL, p = 0.047) and mean corpuscular volume (75.5 vs. 80.9 fL, p = 0.038). The proportion of patients with previous treatment for IDA was also higher in those with lesions on endoscopy. In multivariate analysis, age of ≥10 years (odds ratio [OR], 6.00; 95% confidence Interval [CI], 0.56-10.75) and positive fecal occult blood test (FOBT) findings (OR, 2.25; 95% CI, 0.14-4.52) were factors related to GI lesions. The presence of GI symptoms was not associated with GI lesions. A high proportion of GI lesions were found by endoscopy in children with IDA in this study. Endoscopy should be considered in children with IDA even without GI symptoms, especially in older children, and those with positive FOBT results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iron deficiency (ID) is prevalent in Malaysian children. The incidence of ID in infants under 6 months of age is unknown. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in healthy, term infants aged below 6 months in our hospital population. METHODS A prospective longitudinal pilot study of mother-infant pairs was conducted on infants receiving routine immunizations in a mother and child clinic at a university hospital, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Mothers completed standardized questionnaires at 3- and 5-month postnatal visits. Maternal and infant full blood count, ferritin, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured at 3 months and for the infants repeated at 5 months. Infant anthropometric measurements were obtained at both visits. We conducted a univariate analysis to identify factors associated with ID and IDA. RESULTS Altogether, 91 mother-infant pairs were enrolled, with 88 completing the study. No infant had ID or IDA at 3 months; the lowest ferritin level was 16.6 µg/L. At 5 months, 5.9% (5/85) of infants had ID, and 2.4% (2/85) had IDA. Median (interquartile range) infant ferritin levels significantly declined from 113.4 (65.0-183.6) µg/L at 3 months to 50.9 (29.2-70.4) µg/L at 5 months, p < 0.001. Exclusive breastfeeding until 3 or 5 months was significantly associated with ID at 5 months (p = 0.020, and p = 0.008, respectively) on univariate analysis. The drop in ferritin between 3-5 months was significantly associated with weight and length gains between 0-3 months (p = 0.018, p = 0.009, respectively). Altogether, 14.3% of infants exclusively breastfed until 5 months developed ID. At 5 months, 3.4% of infants were underweight, 1.1% stunted, and 10.2% wasted. CONCLUSIONS In exclusively breastfed term infants, ID occurred by 5 months. Early introduction of iron-rich foods should be considered in exclusively breastfed babies. A high prevalence of wasting suggests a calorie deficit in this population and will lead to stunting if not addressed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anaemia during pregnancy causes adverse outcomes to the woman and the foetus, including anaemic heart failure, prematurity, and intrauterine growth restriction. Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the leading cause of anaemia and oral iron supplementation during pregnancy is widely recommended. However, little focus is directed to dietary intake. This study estimates the contribution of IDA among pregnant women and examines its risk factors (including dietary) in those with moderate or severe IDA in Lagos and Kano states, Nigeria. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 11,582 women were screened for anaemia at 20-32 weeks gestation. The 872 who had moderate or severe anaemia (haemoglobin concentration < 10 g/dL) were included in this study. Iron deficiency was defined as serum ferritin level < 30 ng/mL. We described the sociodemographic and obstetric characteristics of the sample and their self-report of consumption of common food items. We conducted bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis to identify risk factors associated with IDA. RESULTS Iron deficiency was observed among 41% (95%CI: 38 - 45) of women with moderate or severe anaemia and the prevalence increased with gestational age. The odds for IDA reduces from aOR: 0.36 (95%CI: 0.13 - 0.98) among pregnant women who consume green leafy vegetables every 2-3 weeks, to 0.26 (95%CI: 0.09 - 0.73) among daily consumers, compared to those who do not eat it. Daily consumption of edible kaolin clay was associated with increased odds of having IDA compared to non-consumption, aOR 9.13 (95%CI: 3.27 - 25.48). Consumption of soybeans three to four times a week was associated with higher odds of IDA compared to non-consumption, aOR: 1.78 (95%CI: 1.12 - 2.82). CONCLUSION About 4 in 10 women with moderate or severe anaemia during pregnancy had IDA. Our study provides evidence for the protective effect of green leafy vegetables against IDA while self-reported consumption of edible kaolin clay and soybeans appeared to increase the odds of having IDA during pregnancy. Health education on diet during pregnancy needs to be strengthened since this could potentially increase awareness and change behaviours that could reduce IDA among pregnant women with moderate or severe anaemia in Nigeria and other countries.

Abstract
Background. Iron deficiency (ID) is a common micronutrient deficiency and the leading cause of anemia worldwide. ID can be caused by chronic occult blood loss from colorectal neoplasia including colorectal cancer (CRC) and advanced precancerous colorectal lesions. Current guidelines recommend colonoscopy in both men and postmenopausal women presenting with ID anemia (IDA). However, there is controversy on the investigation of patients presenting with a lower risk of CRC including younger women with ID and those with nonanemic ID (NAID). There is a need for a triaging tool to identify which ID patients may benefit from colonoscopy. The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is sensitive for CRC screening in an asymptomatic population, but its role in ID patients is unclear. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review to determine the diagnostic accuracy of FIT for detecting CRC and advanced precancerous neoplasia in individuals presenting with ID with or without anemia. Methods and Analysis. This protocol conforms with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols and Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Diagnostic Test Accuracy. A comprehensive search of the MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science databases will be undertaken for studies published after 2010 which involve patients with ID, who completed a FIT in the 6 months prior to colonoscopy, with FIT sensitivity and specificity calculated against the reference standard colonoscopy. The search will be limited to studies conducted after 2010 to reduce variability in colonoscopy quality. Risk of bias assessment will be conducted using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies version 2. FIT sensitivity and specificity will be the primary measure of diagnostic accuracy, and data will be analysed using a random effects meta-analysis. Discussion. This review and meta-analysis will be the first to systematically explore the value of the FIT as a triaging tool for patients with ID. This trial is registered with CRD42022367162.

Abstract
Iron is an essential micronutrient for athletes, intricately linked to their performance, by regulating cellular respiration and metabolism. Impaired iron levels in the body can significantly hinder athletic performance. The increased demand for iron due to exercise, coupled with potential dietary iron insufficiencies, particularly among endurance athletes, amplifies the risk of iron deficiency. Moreover, prolonged exercise can impact iron absorption, utilization, storage, and overall iron concentrations in an athlete. On the contrary, iron overload may initially lead to enhanced performance; however, chronic excess iron intake or underlying genetic conditions can lead to detrimental health consequences and may negatively impact athletic performance. Excess iron induces oxidative damage, not only compromising muscle function and recovery, but also affecting various tissues and organs in the body. This narrative review delineates the complex relationship between exercise and iron metabolism, and its profound effects on athletic performance. The article also provides guidance on managing iron intake through dietary adjustments, oral iron supplementation for performance enhancement in cases of deficiency, and strategies for addressing iron overload in athletes. Current research is focused on augmenting iron absorption by standardizing the route of administration while minimizing side effects. Additionally, there is ongoing work to identify inhibitors and activators that affect iron absorption, aiming to optimize the body's iron levels from dietary sources, supplements, and chelators. In summary, by refining the athletic diet, considering the timing and dosage of iron supplements for deficiency, and implementing chelation therapies for iron overload, we can effectively enhance athletic performance and overall well-being.

Abstract
Background Micronutrient deficiencies may occur after restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), largely due to malabsorption and/or pouch inflammation. Objectives The objective of this study was to report the frequency of iron deficiency in patients with UC who underwent RPC with IPAA and identify associated risk factors. Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients with UC or IBD-unclassified who underwent RPC with IPAA at Mount Sinai Hospital between 2008 and 2017. Patients younger than 18 years of age at the time of colectomy were excluded. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze baseline characteristics. Medians with interquartile range (IQR) were reported for continuous variables, and proportions were reported for categorical variables. Iron deficiency was defined by ferritin <30 ng/mL. Logistic regression was used to analyze unadjusted relationships between hypothesized risk factors and the outcome of iron deficiency. Results A total of 143 patients had iron studies a median of 3.0 (IQR 1.7-5.6) years after final surgical stage, of whom 73 (51.0%) were men. The median age was 33.5 (IQR 22.7-44.3) years. Iron deficiency was diagnosed in 80 (55.9%) patients with a median hemoglobin of 12.4 g/dL (IQR 10.9-13.3), ferritin of 14 ng/mL (IQR 9.0-23.3), and iron value of 44 μg/dL (IQR 26.0-68.8). Of these, 29 (36.3%) had a pouchoscopy performed within 3 months of iron deficiency diagnosis. Pouchitis and cuffitis were separately noted in 4 (13.8%) and 13 (44.8%) patients, respectively, and concomitant pouchitis-cuffitis was noted in 9 (31.0%) patients. Age, sex, anastomosis type, pouch duration, and history of pouchitis and/or cuffitis were not associated with iron deficiency. Conclusion Iron deficiency is common after RPC with IPAA in patients with UC. Cuffitis is seen in the majority of patients with iron deficiency; however, iron deficiency may occur even in the absence of inflammation.

Abstract
MTP/CDF carriers, called metal ion transport proteins, act as substrates for the transmission of micronutrients such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn) to membrane carriers in plants. In this study, genome-wide analysis of the MTP gene family in the common bean genome, expression analysis of the PvMTP4, PvMTP5, and PvMTP12 genes after Fe and Zn treatments, and the effects of Fe and Zn applications on iron and zinc content were investigated. This study used common bean genotypes assumed to have high or low Fe and Zn accumulation ability. PvMTP genes were defined as containing conserved catalytic domains with molecular weights and protein lengths ranging from 41.35 to 91.05 kDa and from 369 to 813 amino acids (aa), respectively. As a result of the phylogenetic analysis, three main clusters containing seven subgroups were formed. In this study, the first characterization of the MTP gene family of beans was performed, and the responses of three different PvMTP genes in the Zn-CDF group to Fe and Zn applications were revealed. The obtained findings are thought to constitute pioneering resources for future research on common bean biofortification studies, plant breeding related to Fe and Zn, and the functional characterization of the MTP gene family.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The effectiveness of prenatal iron supplementation improves maternal hematological outcomes, but little research has focused on child outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess whether prenatal iron supplementation adjusted to maternal needs improves children's cognitive functioning. METHODS The analyses included a subsample of nonanemic pregnant women recruited in early pregnancy and their children aged 4 years (n=295). Data were collected between 2013 and 2017 in Tarragona (Spain). On the basis of hemoglobin levels before the 12th gestational week, women receive different iron doses: 80 vs 40 mg/d if hemoglobin is 110-130 g/L and 20 vs 40 mg/d if hemoglobin >130 g/L. Children's cognitive functioning was assessed using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-IV and Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment-II tests. The analyses were carried out in 2022 after the completion of the study. Multivariate regression models were performed for assessing the association between different doses of prenatal iron supplementation and children's cognitive functioning. RESULTS Taking 80 mg/d of iron was positively associated with all the scales of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-IV and Neuropsychological Assessment-II when mothers had initial serum ferritin <15 µg/L, but it was negatively associated with Verbal Comprehension Index, Working Memory Index, Processing Speed Index, and Vocabulary Acquisition Index from Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-IV and verbal fluency index from Neuropsychological Assessment-II when mothers showed initial serum ferritin >65 µg/L. In the other group, taking 20 mg/d of iron was positively associated with Working Memory Index, Intelligence Quotient, verbal fluency, and emotion recognition indices when women had initial serum ferritin >65 µg/L. CONCLUSIONS Prenatal iron supplementation adjusted to the maternal hemoglobin levels and baseline iron stores improves cognitive functioning in children aged 4 years.

Abstract
(1) Background: Iron deficiency without anemia (IDWA) is a prevalent health concern in premenopausal women. Oral supplementation of iron may be a viable solution to improve blood-iron status in women; however, the effects of a high-dose iron-supplement regimen have been associated with gastrointestinal side effects. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a low-dose liquid fermented iron-bisglycinate supplement (LIS) on improving blood-iron status in premenopausal women with IDWA without increasing constipation or gastrointestinal distress. (2) Methods: 85 premenopausal women with IDWA (ferritin < 70 ng/dL and hemoglobin > 11.0 g/dL) took a LIS (27 mg) or a placebo (PLA) for 8 weeks. Blood draws were taken at Wk0 and Wk8 of the study to measure serum-iron markers. In addition, surveys of gastrointestinal distress were administered at Wk0, Wk4, and Wk8 while the profile of mood states (POMS) was surveyed at Wk0 and Wk8. (3) Results: Compared to the placebo, the LIS was able to increase serum ferritin (p = 0.03), total serum iron (p = 0.03), and mean corpuscular volume (p = 0.02), while exhibiting no significant interaction in subjective gastrointestinal distress (p > 0.05). No significant effects were detected for POMS (p > 0.05). (4) Conclusions: Supplementing with LIS appears to improve blood-iron status without causing significant gastrointestinal distress in premenopausal women with IDWA.

Abstract
Anemia is a worldwide public health problem that is worst in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), reaching 60% of prevalence. The etiology of anemia is diverse and multifactorial, with iron deficiency being the most prevalent, and often found in pregnant women. Iron is indispensable for the production of red blood cells and approximately 80% of the available heme iron is used for hemoglobin synthesis in mature erythroblasts. Iron deficiency affects oxygen transport, compromising energy and muscle metabolism and can occur with depletion of iron storage, defective erythropoiesis, and low hemoglobin levels. We analyzed anemia prevalence in pregnant women from 2000 to 2019 worldwide correlating them with current (2022) country income, with especial attention to LMICs using WHO dataset. Our analysis indicates that pregnant women from LMICs had a higher probability (40%) of anemia during pregnancy especially those from Africa and South Asia. Africa and the Americas showed a higher decrease in the prevalence of anemia from 2000 to 2019. The Americas and Europe have a lower prevalence, concentrated in 57% of most upper-middle- and high-income countries. Black women are also more prone to develop anemia during pregnancy, especially if they are from LMICs. However, the prevalence of anemia appears to decrease with an increase in educational level. In conclusion, anemia prevalence fluctuated from 5.2 to 65.7% worldwide in 2019, validating it as a public health problem.

Abstract
Dietary iron assimilation is critical for health and essential to prevent iron-deficient states and related comorbidities, such as anemia. The bioavailability of iron is generally low, while its absorption and metabolism are tightly controlled to satisfy metabolic needs and prevent toxicity of excessive iron accumulation. Iron entry into the bloodstream is limited by hepcidin, the iron regulatory hormone. Hepcidin deficiency due to loss-of-function mutations in upstream gene regulators causes hereditary hemochromatosis, an endocrine disorder of iron overload characterized by chronic hyperabsorption of dietary iron, with deleterious clinical complications if untreated. The impact of high dietary iron intake and elevated body iron stores in the general population is not well understood. Herein, we summarize epidemiological data suggesting that a high intake of heme iron, which is abundant in meat products, poses a risk factor for metabolic syndrome pathologies, cardiovascular diseases, and some cancers. We discuss the clinical relevance and potential limitations of data from cohort studies, as well as the need to establish causality and elucidate molecular mechanisms.

Maternal factors associated with iron deficiency without anaemia in early pregnancy: ECLIPSES study. Ann Hematol 2023; 102:741-748. Abstract
Several population-specific genetic, sociodemographic, and maternal lifestyle factors are related to iron status in early pregnancy, and their identification would allow preventive actions to be taken. The study aimed to identify maternal factors associated with iron deficiency (ID) in early pregnancy in non-anaemic pregnant women from a European Mediterranean country. Cross-sectional study using the initial population of the ECLIPSES study performed in non-anaemic pregnant women before gestational week 12. Serum ferritin (SF) and haemoglobin concentrations were measured to evaluate iron status, and ID was defined as SF < 15 µg/L. Several sociodemographic and lifestyle data were recorded and used as covariates in the multivariate-adjusted regression models. Out of the 791 participants, 13.9% had ID in early pregnancy. Underweight (OR 3.70, 95%CI 1.22, 15.53) and parity (1 child: OR 2.03, 95%CI 1.06, 3.88; ≥ 2 children: OR 6.96, 95%CI 3.09, 15.69) increased the odds of ID, while a high intake of total meat (≥ 108.57 g/day: OR 0.37, 95%CI 0.15, 0.87), red/processed meat (≥ 74.29 g/day: OR 0.70, 95%CI 0.35, 0.98), protein (≥ 65.05 g/day: OR 0.85, 95%CI 0.30, 0.99), and dietary iron (≥ 8.58 mg/day: OR 0.58, 95%CI 0.35, 0.94) protected against it. Smoking was also associated with a reduction in ID odds (OR 0.34, 95%CI 0.12, 0.99). Baseline BMI, parity, smoking, and diet are associated with ID in early pregnancy in non-anaemic women. Pregnancy planning policies should focus on women at higher risk of ID, such as those who are underweight, multiparous, or following vegetarian diets. Abstract
BACKGROUND Perioperative anemia has been associated with increased risk of red blood cell transfusion and increased morbidity and mortality after surgery. The optimal approach to the diagnosis and management of perioperative anemia is not fully established. OBJECTIVE To develop consensus recommendations for anemia management in surgical patients. METHODS An international expert panel reviewed the current evidence and developed recommendations using modified RAND Delphi methodology. RESULTS The panel recommends that all patients except those undergoing minor procedures be screened for anemia before surgery. Appropriate therapy for anemia should be guided by an accurate diagnosis of the etiology. The need to proceed with surgery in some patients with anemia is expected to persist. However, early identification and effective treatment of anemia has the potential to reduce the risks associated with surgery and improve clinical outcomes. As with preoperative anemia, postoperative anemia should be treated in the perioperative period. CONCLUSIONS Early identification and effective treatment of anemia has the potential to improve clinical outcomes in surgical patients.

Abstract
Iron deficiency (ID) impairs hemoglobin (Hb) synthesis and immune function, both crucial for sepsis patients. We assessed the impact of iron dextran on reticulocyte (Ret) Hb equivalent (Ret-He) and Ret subpopulations in iron-deficient sepsis patients. In this prospective clinical study we enrolled patients with sepsis or septic shock with procalcitonin concentration > 0.5 ng/mL, diagnosed with ID based on Ret-He. Study subjects received divided doses of iron dextran until normalization of Ret-He. The study population included 35 subjects. The median Ret-He increase after 2 doses of iron dextran was 3.0 (IQR 1.9-6.1) pg (p < 0.01) with median time to normalization 4 (IQR 3-5) days. Although no change in Ret percentage [Me 1.5 (IQR 1.1-2.1) vs. Me 1.4 (IQR 1.1-2.4) %, p = 0.39] and number [Me 0.05 (IQR 0.04-0.07) vs. Me 0.05 (IQR 0.03-0.06) 106/µL, p = 0.88] was noted, Ret subpopulations changed significantly (p for all < 0.01). Divided doses of iron dextran relatively quickly normalize Ret-He in iron-deficient sepsis patients. Changes in Ret subpopulations suggest increased erythropoietic activity. Further research is needed to explore the role of intravenous iron in this clinical setting.

Abstract
Iron deficiency is associated with a substantial burden of morbidity. However, supplementation of iron has been linked to increased rates of serious infection in randomised trials of children in sub-Saharan Africa. Randomised trials in other settings have been inconclusive and it is unknown if changes in levels of iron biomarkers are linked to sepsis in these other settings. We used genetic variants associated with levels of iron biomarkers as instrumental variables in a Mendelian randomisation (MR) analysis to test the hypothesis that increasing levels of iron biomarkers increase the risk of sepsis. In observational and MR analyses we found that increases in iron biomarkers increase the odds of sepsis. In stratified analyses, we show that this risk may be larger in those with iron deficiency and/or anaemia. Taken together, results here suggest a required caution in supplementation of iron and underline the role of iron homeostasis in severe infection.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is common worldwide, and various iron replacement therapies are available. Ferumoxytol is an injectable, high-dose iron formulation (510 mg) that can be administered over a short period (15 min) without test administration. The drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2009 for the treatment of IDA in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), and in 2018, the indication was expanded to include patients without CKD. AREAS COVERED This paper reviews studies testing the efficacy and safety of ferumoxytol in treating IDA compared with other iron formulations. EXPERT OPINION There is substantial evidence that ferumoxytol is effective for the treatment of IDA. The efficacy of ferumoxytol in improving anemia is comparable to that of iron sucrose and ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) and superior to that of oral iron or a placebo in replenishing iron stores. Treatment with ferumoxytol, although more expensive, is cost-effective for outpatients requiring parenteral administration because it requires fewer doses and shorter dosing times per dose. Ferumoxytol also causes less frequent hypophosphatemia than FCM. Currently, its use in children and pregnant women is under consideration, which may provide important information for the future applications of ferumoxytol in larger numbers of patients.

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia affects approximately 45% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), negatively impacts the quality of life in this patient population, and significantly burdens our healthcare system. The pathogenesis of iron deficiency in IBD patients is multifactorial, including intestinal bleeding, malabsorption, and inadequate oral intake. Regular screening and diagnosis in these patients are imperative, and often patients have mixed iron deficiency anemia and anemia of chronic disease, especially in those with active inflammation. Iron may be replenished either orally or intravenously. While oral iron is safe, affordable, and easy to administer, patients often suffer from intolerable gastrointestinal side effects, and particularly in IBD patients, oral iron may increase inflammation and contribute to flares. Therefore, although it is substantially underused, intravenous (IV) iron is considered first-line treatment for patients with active disease, severe anemia, oral iron intolerance, and erythropoietin requirements. Several IV iron formulations are available, and iron sucrose and ferric carboxymaltose are the most frequently used and well studied in patients with IBD. However, iron isomaltoside could potentially become a popular choice among providers given its safety, efficacy, and convenience. Overall, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of iron deficiency anemia are important in patients with IBD. Individual patient characteristics, risks, and benefits, and advantages and disadvantages, should be considered when determining the best route and formulation for iron repletion.

Abstract
Inadequate iron intake and iron deficiency are recognised as a public health problem in the population at large, and particularly in specific subpopulations. Dietary iron intake was analysed using data of the national Slovenian food consumption study, SI.Menu (n = 1248 subjects; 10−74 years), while iron status was evaluated with laboratory analyses of blood haemoglobin, serum ferritin, and iron concentration in samples, collected in the Nutrihealth study (n = 280, adults). The estimated daily usual population-weighted mean iron intakes ranged from 16.0 mg in adults and the elderly to 16.7 in adolescents, and were lower in females for all three age groups. The main dietary iron sources in all the age groups were bread and bakery products, meat (products), fruit, and vegetables. The highest prevalence of haemoglobin anaemia was observed in females aged 51−64 years (6.7%). Critically depleted iron stores (ferritin concentration < 15 µg/L) were particularly found in premenopausal females (10.1%). Factors influencing low haemoglobin, ferritin, and iron intake were also investigated. We observed significant correlations between iron status with meat and fish intake, and with iron intake from meat and fish, but not with total iron intake. We can conclude that particularly premenopausal females are the most fragile population in terms of inadequate iron intake and iron deficiency, which should be considered in future research and public health strategies.

Abstract
Iron deficiency (ID) and iron status in non-anemic patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk without a history of cardiovascular diseases is still weakly explored. In this study, the authors evaluated the most common ID definitions in this group of patients. A total of 533 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were collected from 2005-2006, 2017-2018, and 2017-2020 records. Participants were divided according to their ASCVD risk score to the following groups: low (n=168, 32%), borderline (n=43, 8%), intermediate (n=200, 37%), and high (n=122, 23%). There was a higher prevalence of ID in low- and borderline-risk groups in contrast to intermediate- and high-risk groups. Higher serum ferritin concentrations were observed in groups with a greater ASCVD risk score. Transferrin saturation (TSAT) was comparable in all ASCVD categories. Lack of ID, defined by three different guidelines that are mainly based on serum ferritin levels, predisposed to a higher ASCVD risk category. Normal iron status, defined by these three guidelines, was positively associated with the male gender. The opposite association was observed for non-Hispanic Whites. The analyzed criteria of ID, based mostly on serum ferritin levels, demonstrated limited usefulness in patients with increased ASCVD risk. Further studies should be done to determine proper ID diagnostic criteria in non-anemic patients without a previous cardiovascular history with elevated ASCVD risk.

The Impact of Iron Dyshomeostasis and Anaemia on Long-Term Pulmonary Recovery and Persisting Symptom Burden after COVID-19: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study. Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is frequently associated with iron dyshomeostasis. The latter is related to acute disease severity and COVID-19 convalescence. We herein describe iron dyshomeostasis at COVID-19 follow-up and its association with long-term pulmonary and symptomatic recovery. The prospective, multicentre, observational cohort study “Development of Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) in Patients With Severe SARS-CoV-2 Infection (CovILD)” encompasses serial extensive clinical, laboratory, functional and imaging evaluations at 60, 100, 180 and 360 days after COVID-19 onset. We included 108 individuals with mild-to-critical acute COVID-19, whereas 75% presented with severe acute disease. At 60 days post-COVID-19 follow-up, hyperferritinaemia (35% of patients), iron deficiency (24% of the cohort) and anaemia (9% of the patients) were frequently found. Anaemia of inflammation (AI) was the predominant feature at early post-acute follow-up, whereas the anaemia phenotype shifted towards iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and combinations of IDA and AI until the 360 days follow-up. The prevalence of anaemia significantly decreased over time, but iron dyshomeostasis remained a frequent finding throughout the study. Neither iron dyshomeostasis nor anaemia were related to persisting structural lung impairment, but both were associated with impaired stress resilience at long-term COVID-19 follow-up. To conclude, iron dyshomeostasis and anaemia are frequent findings after COVID-19 and may contribute to its long-term symptomatic outcome.

Abstract
Anemia is highly prevalent worldwide and iron deficiency is the first cause. Iron deficiency has not only hematologic effects but also non-hematologic effects - immune, metabolic, cognitive dysfunctions and poor cardiovascular and renal outcomes - which generally precede anemia. Iron therapy not only significantly improves the hematological parameters but also has non-hematologic benefits. Given that its efficacy and safety has been revealed over the years, intravenous (IV) iron therapy is frequently used. Intravenous iron products are nanoparticles largely consisting in an iron core surrounded by a carbohydrate shell. They are classified as non-biological complex molecules, being different from small commonly used molecules, with properties and biological behavior impossible to be completely characterized only by physicochemical analysis. To date, there is no appropriate regulatory evaluation system for these medicines and several follow-on versions of the IV iron originators (e.g., iron sucrose) were approved using the same regulatory pathway as for generics. Because of this vulnerability in an adequate pathway for approval, both non-clinical and clinical studies suggested no therapeutic equivalence (thus no interchangeability) between iron sucrose originator (Venofer®), and iron sucrose similars. In this review we aimed to underline the importance of intravenous iron therapy as well as raise awareness regarding the differences between nanomedicines and their intended similar but not identical copies. The potential implications of these differences impact patients (safety, efficacy) but also the medical system (higher costs).

Abstract
Background: Iron deficiency anemia is one of the common public health problems that found in various countries, including Indonesia. The incidence of iron deficiency anemia does not only occur in rural areas but also in urban areas. Iron deficiency that occurs in adolescent girls with or without anemia has a negative impact on immune function, growth and physical and mental development. Purpose: To determine the incidence of anemia in adolescent girls in urban areas. Patients and methods: This study was an observational study with a cross sectional design. The research subjects were 52 young women aged 15-25 years living in the city of Semarang, Central Java. The subject will be taken a blood sample to check the complete blood profile and iron status, namely serum ferritin, serum iron, and serum TIBC (total iron binding capacity). Research data analysis was carried out using a computer program. Results: The prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among female adolescents in urban areas in this study was 13.4% while adolescent girls who experienced iron deficiency without anemia were 13.4%. Conclusion: Iron deficiency anemia can occur in urban areas with a prevalence > 5%.

In recent years, ferumoxytol has also been demonstrated to have potential for many additional biomedical applications due to its excellent inherent physical properties, such as superparamagnetism, biocatalytic activity, and immunomodulatory behavior. With good safety and clearance profiles, ferumoxytol has been extensively utilized in both preclinical and clinical studies. Here, we first introduce the medical needs and the value of current iron oxide nanoparticle formulations in the market. We then focus on ferumoxytol nanoparticles and their physicochemical, diagnostic, and therapeutic properties. We include examples describing their use in various biomedical applications, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), multimodality imaging, iron deficiency treatment, immunotherapy, microbial biofilm treatment and drug delivery. Finally, we provide a brief conclusion and offer our perspectives on the current limitations and emerging applications of ferumoxytol in biomedicine. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive summary of the developments of ferumoxytol as an agent with diagnostic, therapeutic, and theranostic functionalities.

Abstract
As medical doctors, we routinely check patient blood chemistry and CBC data to diagnose disease. However, these data and methods of analysis are very rarely used to find pre-disease conditions or treat undiagnosed malaise. Masatoshi Kaneko Ph.D. found that many pre-disease conditions and types of malaise could be detected using his unique method of blood data analysis, and could also be treated using personalized nutritional therapy as an alternative to using drugs. The authors of this article introduce personalized nutritional therapy based on blood data analysis (Kaneko’s method), and present and discuss some clinical cases. In total, 253 pre-disease or undiagnosed patients were treated using this nutritional therapy approach, and most of them recovered from their chronic symptoms and pre-disease conditions. This novel nutritional therapy has the potential to help many presymptomatic and undiagnosed patients suffering from malaise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adaptive thermogenesis is an iron-demanding pathway, significantly contributing to whole-body energy expenditure. However, the effects of iron-deficient diets on adaptive thermogenesis and obesity remain unknown. OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the impact of dietary iron deficiency on iron homeostasis in adipocytes, adaptive thermogenic capacity, and metabolic consequences in obesity. METHODS C57BL/6 male mice were assigned to either the iron-adequate (IA, 35 ppm) or the iron-deficient group (ID, 3 ppm) at weaning. Upon 8 wk of age, both IA and ID groups received an isocaloric high-fat diet (45% kcal from fat) for 10 wk, maintaining the same iron content. Mice (n = 8) were used to determine the iron status at the systemic and tissue levels and lipid metabolism and inflammatory signaling in adipose tissue. The same mice were used to evaluate cold tolerance (4°C) for 3 h. For assessing adaptive thermogenesis, mice (n = 5) received an intraperitoneal injection of β3-adrenoceptor agonist CL316243 (CL) for 5 d. RESULTS Compared with the IA group, the ID group had nonanemic iron deficiency, lower serum ferritin (42.8%, P < 0.01), and greater weight gain (8.67%, P < 0.05) and insulin resistance (159%, P < 0.01), partly due to reduced AMP-activated protein kinase activation (61.0%, P < 0.05). Upon cold exposure, the ID group maintained a core body temperature 2°C lower than the IA group. The ID group had lower iron content (47.0%, P < 0.01) in the inguinal adipose tissue (iWAT) than the IA group, which was associated with impaired adaptive thermogenesis. In response to CL, ID mice showed decreased heat production (P < 0.01) and defective upregulation of beige adipocyte-specific markers, including uncoupling protein 1 (41.1%, P < 0.001), transferrin receptor 1 (47.5%, P < 0.001), and mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes (P < 0.05) compared with IA mice. CONCLUSIONS Dietary iron deficiency deregulates iron balance in the iWAT and impairs adaptive thermogenesis, thereby escalating the diet-induced weight gain in C57BL/6 mice.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Postoperative anaemia can affect more than 90% of patients undergoing major surgeries. Patients develop an absolute iron deficiency in the face of significant blood loss or preoperative anaemia and major surgery. Studies have shown the negative impact of these factors on transfusion requirements, infections, increased hospitalisation and long-term morbidities. AIM OF THE STUDY The research was performed to determine the correlation between intravenous iron administration in the postoperative period and improved haemoglobin correction trend. MATERIAL AND METHODS A prospective study was conducted to screen and treat iron deficiency in patients undergoing major surgery associated with significant bleeding. For iron deficiency anaemia screening, in the postoperative period, the following bioumoral parameters were assessed: haemoglobin, serum iron, transferrin saturation (TSAT), and ferritin, direct serum total iron-binding capacity (dTIBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH). In addition, serum glucose, fibrinogen, urea, creatinine and lactate values were also collected. RESULTS Twenty-one patients undergoing major surgeries (52,38% were emergency and 47,61% elective interventions) were included in the study. Iron deficiency, as defined by ferritin 100-300 μg/L along with transferrin saturation (TSAT) < 20 %, mean corpuscular volume (MVC) < 92 fL, mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) < 33 g/dL, serum iron < 10 μmol/L and direct serum total iron-binding capacity (dTIBC) > 36 μmol/L, was identified in all cases. To correct the deficit and optimise the haematological status, all patients received intravenous ferric carboxymaltose (500-1000 mg, single dose). Using Quadratic statistical analysis, the trend of haemoglobin correction was found to be a favourable one. CONCLUSION The administration of intravenous ferric carboxymaltose in the postoperative period showed the beneficial effect of this type of intervention on the haemoglobin correction trend in these groups of patients.
