Abstract
Citric acid plays an ubiquitous role in the complexation of essential metals like iron and thus it has a key function making them biologically available. For this, iron(III) citrate complexes are considered among the most significant coordinated forms of ferric iron that take place in biochemical processes of all living organisms. Although these systems hold great biological relevance, their coordination chemistry has not been fully elucidated yet. The current study aimed to investigate the speciation of iron(III) citrate using Mössbauer and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopies. Our aim was to gain insights into the structure and nuclearity of the complexes depending on the pH and iron to citrate ratio. By applying the frozen solution technique, the results obtained directly reflect the iron speciation present in the aqueous solution. At 1:1 iron:citrate molar ratio, polynuclear species prevailed forming most probably a trinuclear structure. In the case of citrate excess, the coexistence of several monoiron species with different coordination environments was confirmed. The stability of the polynuclear complexes was checked in the presence of organic solvents.

Abstract
Fatty acids (FAs) play important roles as membrane components and signal transduction molecules. Changes in short chain FA (SCFA) composition are associated with gut microbiota modifications. However, the effect of bacteria-driven changes on the detailed FA spectrum has not been explored yet. We investigated the effect of antibiotics (ABx) and/or probiotics, in four treatment groups on rat stool FA composition. Principal component analysis indicated that the chromatogram profiles of the treatment groups differ, which was also observed at different time points. Linear mixed effects models showed that in the parameters compared (sampling times, treatments. and their interactions), both the weight percentage and the concentration of FAs were affected by ABx and probiotic administration. This study found that the gut microbiome defines trans and branched saturated FAs, most saturated FAs, and unsaturated FAs with less carbon atoms. These results are among the first ones to demonstrate the restoring effects of a probiotic mixture on a substantial part of the altered total FA spectrum, and also revealed a previously unknown relationship between gut bacteria and a larger group of FAs. These findings suggest that intestinal bacteria produce not only SCFAs but also other FAs that may affect the host's physiological processes.

Abstract
The long time (2 h) required for measurement, expensive chemicals (Ag2SO4), and toxic reagents (K2Cr2O7, HgSO4) limit the application of the standard method for measuring the oxygen equivalent of organic content in wastewater (chemical oxygen demand, COD). In recent years, the COD has increasingly been replaced by the total organic carbon (TOC) parameter. Since the limit values of the pollution levels are usually given in terms of the COD, efforts are being made to find the correlation between these parameters. Several papers have published correlation analyses of COD and TOC for industrial and municipal wastewater, but the relationship has not been discussed for individual chemicals. Here, this relationship was investigated using 70 contaminants (laboratory chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides). The calculated COD values, in most cases, agreed, within ~10%, with the experimental ones; for tetracyclines and some chloroaromatic molecules, the measured values were 20-50% lower than the calculated values. The COD/TOC ratios were between 2 and 3: for macrolides, they were ~3; for fluoroquinolones and tetracyclines, they were ~2. The molecular structure dependence of the ratio necessitates the establishing of the correlation on an individual basis. In advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), the ratio changes during degradation, limiting the application of TOC instead of COD.

Abstract
Previously, the presence of a blood-myenteric plexus barrier and its disruption was reported in experimentally induced colitis via a macrophage-dependent process. The aim of this study is to reveal how myenteric barrier disruption and subsequent neuronal injury affects gut motility in vivo in a murine colitis model. We induced colitis with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), with the co-administration of liposome-encapsulated clodronate (L-clodronate) to simultaneously deplete blood monocytes contributing to macrophage infiltration in the inflamed muscularis of experimental mice. DSS-treated animals receiving concurrent L-clodronate injection showed significantly decreased blood monocyte numbers and colon muscularis macrophage (MM) density compared to DSS-treated control (DSS-vehicle). DSS-clodronate-treated mice exhibited significantly slower whole gut transit time than DSS-vehicle-treated animals and comparable to that of controls. Experiments with oral gavage-fed Evans-blue dye showed similar whole gut transit times in DSS-clodronate-treated mice as in control animals. Furthermore, qPCR-analysis and immunofluorescence on colon muscularis samples revealed that factors associated with neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, including Bax1, Hdac4, IL-18, Casp8 and Hif1a are overexpressed after DSS-treatment, but not in the case of concurrent L-clodronate administration. Our findings highlight that MM-infiltration in the muscularis layer is responsible for colitis-associated dysmotility and enteric neuronal dysfunction along with the release of mediators associated with neurodegeneration in a murine experimental model.

Abstract
Introduction: The role of p16 and p53 immunohistochemistry in the diagnosis of rare and aggressive uterine carcinosarcoma (UCS) has been well established. However, enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2), a histone methyltransferase and a member of the polycomb group family is a relatively new biomarker, with limited published data on its significance in this tumor type. The goal of this study was to examine EZH2 expression in UCS and its components, in correlation with morphological features, and p16 and p53 staining patterns. Methods: Twenty-eight UCSs were included in the study. EZH2, p16 and p53 immunoreactivity were assessed independently by two pathologists in both tumor components (epithelial and mesenchymal). EZH2 and p16 immunostains were scored semiquantitatively: based on the percentage and intensity of tumor cell staining a binary staining index ("high- or low-expressing") was calculated. The p53 staining pattern was evaluated as wild-type or aberrant (diffuse nuclear, null, or cytoplasmic expression). Statistical tests were used to evaluate the correlation between staining patterns for all three markers and the different tumor components and histotypes. Results: High EZH2 and p16 expression and aberrant p53 patterns were present in 89.3% 78.6% and 85.7% of the epithelial component and in 78.6%, 62.5% and 82.1% of the mesenchymal component, respectively. Differences among these expression rates were not found to be significant (p > 0.05). Regarding the epithelial component, aberrant p53 pattern was found to be significantly (p = 0.0474) more frequent in the serous (100%) than in endometrioid (66.6%) histotypes. Within the mesenchymal component, p53 null expression pattern occurred significantly (p = 0.0257) more frequently in heterologous sarcoma components (71.4%) compared to the homologous histotype (18.8%). Conclusion: In conclusion, EZH2, p16 and p53 seem to play a universal role in the pathogenesis of UCS; however, a distinctive pattern of p53 expression appears to exist between the serous and endometrioid carcinoma components and also between the homologous and heterologous sarcoma components.

Abstract
The ionic environment within the nucleoplasm might diverge from the conditions found in the cytoplasm, potentially playing a role in the cellular stress response. As a result, it is conceivable that interactions of nuclear actin and actin-binding proteins (ABPs) with apoptosis factors may differ in the nucleoplasm and cytoplasm. The primary intracellular stress response is Ca2+ influx. The junctional mediating and regulating Y protein (JMY) is an actin-binding protein and has the capability to interact with the apoptosis factor p53 in a Ca2+-dependent manner, forming complexes that play a regulatory role in cytoskeletal remodelling and motility. JMY's presence is observed in both the cytoplasm and nucleoplasm. Here, we show that ex vivo ectocervical squamous cells subjected to electroporation with JMY protein exhibited varying morphological alterations. Specifically, the highly differentiated superficial and intermediate cells displayed reduced nuclear size. In inflamed samples, nuclear enlargement and simultaneous cytoplasmic reduction were observable and showed signs of apoptotic processes. In contrast, the less differentiated parabasal and metaplastic cells showed increased cytoplasmic activity and the formation of membrane protrusions. Surprisingly, in severe inflammation, vaginosis or ASC-US (Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance), JMY appears to influence only the nuclear and perinuclear irregularities of differentiated cells, and cytoplasmic abnormalities still existed after the electroporation. Our observations can provide an appropriate basis for the exploration of the relationship between cytopathologically relevant morphological changes of epithelial cells and the function of ABPs. This is particularly important since ABPs are considered potential diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for both cancers and chronic inflammation.

Abstract
Objective The approval of immunotherapy (I-O) for the treatment of late-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) opened new perspectives in improving survival outcomes. However, survival data have not yet been provided from the period of the Covid-19 pandemic. The aims of our study were to assess and compare survival outcomes of patients with advanced LC receiving systemic anticancer treatment (SACT) before and after the approval of immunotherapy in Hungary, and to examine the impact of pandemic on survival outcomes using data from the Hungarian National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) database. Methods This retrospective, longitudinal study included patients aged ≥20 years who were diagnosed with advanced stage lung cancer (LC) (ICD-10 C34) between 1 January 2011 and 31 December 2021 and received SACT treatment without LC-related surgery. Survival rates were evaluated by year of diagnosis, sex, age, and LC histology. Results In total, 35,416 patients were newly diagnosed with advanced LC and received SACT during the study period (mean age at diagnosis: 62.1-66.3 years). In patients with non-squamous cell carcinoma, 3-year survival was significantly higher among those diagnosed in 2019 vs. 2011-2012 (28.7% [95% CI: 26.4%-30.9%] vs. 14.45% [95% CI: 13.21%-15.69%], respectively). In patients with squamous cell carcinoma, 3-year survival rates were 22.3% (95% CI: 19.4%-25.2%) and 13.37% (95% CI: 11.8%-15.0%) in 2019 and 2011-2012, respectively, the change was statistically significant. Compared to 2011-2012, the hazard ratio of survival change for non-squamous cell carcinoma patients was 0.91, 0.82, and 0.62 in 2015-2016, 2017-2018, and 2019, respectively (p<0.001 for all cases). In the squamous cell carcinoma group, corresponding hazard ratios were 0.93, 0.87, and 0.78, respectively (p<0.001 for all cases). Survival improvements remained significant in both patient populations during the Covid-19 pandemic (2020-2021). No significant improvements were found in the survival of patients with small cell carcinoma. Platinum-based chemotherapy was the most common first-line treatment in all diagnostic periods, however, the proportion of patients receiving first- or second-line immunotherapy significantly increased during the study period. Conclusion 3-year survival rates of NSCLC almost doubled among patients with non-squamous cell carcinoma and significantly improved at squamous cell carcinoma over the past decade in Hungary. Improvements could potentially be attributable by the introduction of immunotherapy and were not offset by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract
While sponge cake is one of the most well-liked cookies in the world, mint and cocoa have both been shown to be excellent sources of antioxidant compounds. Therefore, the aim of the study was to create functional sponge cakes with the addition of Dutch cocoa powder and different types of mint, with proven increased total antioxidant and polyphenol content. Additionally, made an effort to produce functional sponge cakes enhanced with cocoa powder and dried, ground mint leaves. To accomplish this, the cakes with cocoa addition were also added 1, 3, and 5% of the ground mint variety, and then the changes in their antioxidant and polyphenol content were assessed. To prove the functionality of cakes, total polyphenol content was detected by Folin-Ciocalteu, while all antioxidant content was measured by the FRAP method. The spectrophotometric analysis supported the functionality of sponge cakes and the baking losses of identified components. The total polyphenol content of baked goods ranged from 1.37 to 1.66 mg GAE/g for peppermint cakes, from 1.66 to 1.87 mg GAE/g for spearmint cakes, and from 1.20 to 1.68 mg GAE/g for strawberry mint sponge cakes. The total antioxidant content of the functional cakes changed between 1.84 and 2.82 mg AAE/g for peppermint cakes, from 1.84 to 4.00 mg AAE/g for spearmint cakes, and from 1.56 to 2.94 mg GAE/g for strawberry mint sponge cakes. The natural control samples, and control sponge cakes made without mint addition with only cocoa powder always had lower levels of polyphenols and antioxidants. All samples had baking loss (control samples had the highest in all cases), but strawberry mint samples had the least of it when it came to antioxidant content and spearmint samples had the least in the case of polyphenol content. Overall, mints and Dutch cocoa powder are appropriate for the production of functional bakery goods because they give the final product a tasty flavor and provide a significant amount of antioxidants and polyphenols despite baking.

Abstract
Photonic nanoarchitectures of butterfly wings can serve as biotemplates to prepare semiconductor thin films of ZnO by atomic layer deposition. The resulting biotemplated ZnO nanoarchitecture preserves the structural and optical properties of the natural system, while it will also have the features of the functional material. The ZnO-coated wings can be used directly in heterogeneous photocatalysis to decompose pollutants dissolved in water upon visible light illumination. We used the photonic nanoarchitectures of different Morpho butterflies with different structural colors as biotemplates and examined the dependence of decomposition rates of methyl orange and rhodamine B dyes on the structural color of the biotemplates and the thickness of the ZnO coating. Using methyl orange, we measured a ten-fold increase in photodegradation rate when the 20 nm ZnO-coated wings were compared to similarly coated glass substrates. Using rhodamine B, a saturating relationship was found between the degradation rate and the thickness of the deposited ZnO on butterfly wings. We concluded that the enhancement of the catalytic efficiency can be attributed to the slow light effect due to a spectral overlap between the ZnO-coated Morpho butterfly wings reflectance with the absorption band of dyes, thus the photocatalytic performance could be changed by the tuning of the structural color of the butterfly biotemplates. The photodegradation mechanism of the dyes was investigated by liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy.

Abstract
Nanoscale Fe containing particles can penetrate the root apoplast. Nevertheless, cell wall size exclusion questions that for Fe mobilisation, a close contact between the membrane integrating FERRIC REDUCTASE OXIDASE (FRO) enzymes and Fe containing particles is required. Haematite nanoparticle suspension, size of 10-20 nm, characterized by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, TEM, ICP and SAED was subjected to Fe utilisation by the flavin secreting model plant cucumber (Cucumis sativus). Alterations in the structure and distribution of the particles were revealed by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, HRTEM and EDS element mapping. Biological utilisation of Fe resulted in a suppression of Fe deficiency responses (expression of CsFRO 1, 2 & 3 and RIBOFLAVIN A1; CsRIBA1 genes and root ferric chelate reductase activity). Haematite nanoparticles were stacked in the middle lamella of the apoplast. Fe mobilisation is evidenced by the reduction in the particle size. Fe release from nanoparticles does not require a contact with the plasma membrane. Parallel suppression in the CsFRO 1&3 and CsRIBA1 transcript amounts support that flavin biosynthesis is an inclusive Fe deficiency response involved in the reduction-based Fe utilisation of Cucumis sativus roots. CsFRO2 is suggested to play a role in the intracellular Fe homeostasis.

Abstract
Objective The Hungarian Undiagnosed Lung Cancer (HULC) study aimed to explore the potential reasons for missed LC (lung cancer) diagnosis by comparing healthcare and socio-economic data among patients with post-mortem diagnosed LC with those who were diagnosed with LC during their lives. Methods This nationwide, retrospective study used the databases of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) and National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to identify patients who died between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 and were diagnosed with lung cancer post-mortem (population A) or during their lifetime (population B). Patient characteristics, socio-economic factors, and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) data were compared between the diagnosed and undiagnosed patient population. Results During the study period, 8,435 patients were identified from the HCSO database with LC as the cause of death, of whom 1,203 (14.24%) had no LC-related ICD (International Classification of Diseases) code records in the NHIF database during their lives (post-mortem diagnosed LC population). Post-mortem diagnosed LC patients were significantly older than patients diagnosed while still alive (mean age 71.20 vs. 68.69 years, p<0.001), with a more pronounced age difference among female patients (difference: 4.57 years, p<0.001), and had significantly fewer GP (General Practitioner) and specialist visits, X-ray and CT scans within 7 to 24 months and 6 months before death, although the differences in GP and specialist visits within 7-24 months did not seem clinically relevant. Patients diagnosed with LC while still alive were more likely to be married (47.62% vs. 33.49%), had higher educational attainment, and had more children, than patients diagnosed with LC post-mortem. Conclusions Post-mortem diagnosed lung cancer accounts for 14.24% of total lung cancer mortality in Hungary. This study provides valuable insights into patient characteristics, socio-economic factors, and HCRU data potentially associated with a high risk of lung cancer misdiagnosis.

Abstract
The present study explored the types of stressors faced by rhythmic gymnastics athletes, their parents, and coaches. Semi-structured interviews with 12 participants—four gymnasts, five coaches, and three parents—were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis in a theory-driven framework. The categorizations of sport-related stressors for the parents, coaches, and gymnasts were based on existing theories. The results showed that both the gymnasts and the coaches predominantly noted mastery-avoidance goals in terms of performance, while the interviews with parents mostly indicated performance-avoidance goals. All three groups of participants consistently reported a detrimental atmosphere in rhythmic gymnastics. For instance, they emphasized the stress related to inadequate communication between the concerned parties. Moreover, all parties believed that having a lean body was linked to success in the competitive world of rhythmic gymnastics. The present study provides insight into some of the potential major stressors and the related subjective experiences affecting athletes socializing in the same sporting environment.

Abstract
(1) Background: Although parental behavior is known to be an important source of influence, relatively few studies have examined the factors possibly contributing parental stressors as being directly related to their children’s sport socialization. The present study explored the relative importance of related parental stressors and the associations between these stressors and various types of parental involvement. (2) Method: A total of 1260 parents completed an online form including demographic questions, questions on their children’s sport participation, and three self-report measures (PSSS, PISQ, and PASSES). (3) Results: The results revealed that the multiple linear regression models for overall parental stress were statistically significant. The significant predictors were the parent’s educational level, the child’s current stage of sports participation, and the child’s sport injury (or the lack thereof). Furthermore, the stressors perceived by parents were positively associated with parental direct behavior and pressure. (4) Conclusions: Parents are under more stress as their child’s stages of sport development increases, if their child has already had a sports injury, and the parents’ directive behavior and experienced stress were significantly associated. The obtained results expand the existing knowledge of the complexity of parents’ importance in children’s sports careers.

Abstract
A patients Because of the past 3 decades’ extensive research, several disease modifying therapies became available, thus a paradigm change is multiple sclerosis care was necessary. In 2018 a therapeutic guideline was created recommending that treatment of persons with multiple sclerosis should take place in specified care units where the entire spectrum of disease modifying therapies is available, patient monitoring is ensured, and therapy side effects are detected and treated promptly. In 2019 multiple sclerosis care unit criteria were developed, emphasizing personnel and instrumental requirements to provide most professional care. However, no survey was conducted assessing the real-world adaptation of these criteria. Objective To assess whether Hungarian care units fulfil international criteria. Methods A self-report questionnaire was assembled based on international guidelines and sent to Hungarian care units focusing on 3 main aspects: personnel and instrumental background, disease-modifying therapy use, number of people living with multiple sclerosis receiving care in care units. Data on number of persons with multiple sclerosis were compared to Hungarian prevalence estimates. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse data. Results Out of 27 respondent care units, 3 fulfilled minimum requirements and 7 fulfilled minimum and recommended requirements. The least prevalent neighbouring specialties were spasticity and pain specialist, and neuro-ophthalmologist and oto-neurologist. Only 15 centres used all available disease modifying therapies. A total number of 7213 people with multiple sclerosis received care in 27 respondent centres. Compared to prevalence estimates, 2500 persons with multiple sclerosis did not receive multiple sclerosis specific care in Hungary. Conclusion Less than half of Hungarian care units provided sufficient care for people living with multiple sclerosis. Care units employing fewer neighbouring specialties, might have difficulties diagnosing and providing appropriate care for persons with multiple sclerosis, especially for people with progressive disease course, contributing to the reported low number of persons living with multiple sclerosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fingolimod was approved and reimbursed by the healthcare provider in Hungary for the treatment of highly active relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) in 2012. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness, safety profile, and persistence to fingolimod in a real-life setting in Hungary in RRMS patients who were either therapy naïve before enrollment or have changed to fingolimod from another disease-modifying therapy (DMT) for any reason. METHODS This cross-sectional, observational study with prospective data collection was performed nationwide at 21 sites across Hungary. To avoid selection bias, sites were asked to document eligible patients in consecutive chronological order. Demographic, clinical, safety and efficacy data were analysed for up to 5 years from 570 consenting adult patients with RRMS who had received treatment with fingolimod for at least one year. RESULTS 69.6% of patients remained free from relapses for the whole study duration; in the first year, 85.1% of patients did not experience a relapse, which rose to 94.6% seen in the 5th year. Compared to baseline at study end, 28.2% had higher, and 9.1% had lower, meanwhile, 62.7% of the patients had stable EDSS scores. Overall, the annualized relapse rate decreased from 0.804 observed at baseline to 0.185, 0.149, 0.122, 0.091, and 0.097 (77.0%, 82.1%, 85.2%, 89.7%, and 89.0% relative reduction, respectively) after 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years of treatment. The greatest reduction rate was seen in the group of therapy naïve patients. Treatment persistence on fingolimod after 60 months was 73.4%. CONCLUSION In this nationwide Hungarian cohort, most patients under fingolimod treatment were free from relapses and disability progression. In addition, fingolimod has proven to be a well-tolerated DMT that has sustained its manageable safety profile, high efficacy, and positive benefit/risk ratio for up to 5 years in a real-life setting.

Abstract
Iron (Fe) is an essential cofactor for all livings. Although Fe membrane transport mechanisms often utilize FeII, uncoordinated or deliberated ferrous ions can initiate Fenton reactions. FeIII citrate complexes are among the most important complexed forms of FeIII especially in plants that, indeed, can undergo photoreduction. Since leaves as photosynthetic organs of higher plants are generally exposed to illumination in daytime, photoreaction of ferric species may have biological relevance in iron metabolism, the relevance of which is poorly understood. In present work FeIII citrate transformation during the photodegradation in solution and after foliar application on leaves was studied by Mössbauer analysis directly. To obtain irradiation time dependence of the speciation of iron in solutions, four model solutions of different pH values (1.5, 3.3, 5.5, and 7.0) with Fe to citrate molar ratio 1:1.1 were exposed to light. Highly acidic conditions led to a complete reduction of Fe together with the formation of FeII citrate and hexaaqua complexes in equal concentration. At higher pH, the only product of the photodegradation was FeII citrate, which was later reoxidized and polymerized, resulting in the formation of polynuclear stable ferric compound. To test biological relevance, leaves of cabbage were treated with FeIII citrate solution. X-ray fluorescence imaging indicated the accumulation of Fe in the treated leaf parts. Mössbauer analysis revealed the presence of several ferric species incorporated into the biological structure. The Fe speciation observed should be considered in biological systems where FeIII citrate has a ubiquitous role in Fe acquisition and homeostasis.

Abstract
This study summarizes the results of scientific investigations on the removal of the three most often used β-blockers (atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol) by various advanced oxidation processes (AOP). The free radical chemistry, rate constants, degradation mechanism and elimination effectiveness of these compounds are discussed together with the technical details of experiments. In most AOP the degradation is predominantly initiated by hydroxyl radicals. In sulfate radical anion-based oxidation processes (SROP) both hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radical anions greatly contribute to the degradation. The rate constants of reactions with these two radicals are in the 109-1010 M-1 s-1 range. The degradation products reflect ipso attack, hydroxylation on the aromatic ring and/or the amino moiety and cleavage of the side chain. Among AOP, photocatalysis and SROP are the most effective for degradation of the three β-blockers. The operating parameters have to be optimized to the most suitable effectiveness.

Abstract
The chemical changes caused by electron beam and γ irradiations and the biochemical characteristics of degradation products of a frequently used antibiotic oxacillin were investigated and compared with those of cloxacillin by applying pulse radiolysis, chemical and biochemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon content, oxygen uptake rate, toxicity and antibacterial activity measurements. Oxacillin was found to be non-toxic, but poorly biodegradable by the mixed microbial population of the activated sludge of a wastewater treatment plant. Therefore, it can significantly contribute to the spread of β-lactam antibiotic resistant bacteria. However, the products formed by γ-irradiation were more easily biodegradable as they were utilized as nutrient source by the microbes of the activated sludge and the products did not show antibacterial activity. During irradiation treatment of aerated aqueous solutions mainly hydroxyl radicals induce the elimination of antimicrobial activity by making alterations at the bicyclic β-lactam part of these antibiotics. Since the β-lactam part is the same in oxacillin and cloxacillin, the biochemical characteristics of products of the two antibiotics are similar. The attack of hydrated electron takes place on the carbonyl groups. When the irradiation is made under anoxic conditions these reactions may also contribute considerably to alterations at the β-lactam part and thereby to the loss of antibacterial activity.

Abstract
External anogenital warts (EGW) are primarily associated with the low-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes 6 and 11, though coinfection with other low-risk and oncogenic high-risk HPV genotypes also occurs. Although there have been many studies on HPV-associated disease, the prevalence of HPV genotypes associated with EGW is not well characterized. The objective of our retrospective study was to determine the prevalence of HPV genotypes among patients diagnosed with EGW in the south-west of Hungary. Archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues from 94 patients were processed in our study. HPV genotypes were determined, applying HPV Direct Flow CHIP test. The overall prevalence of HPV DNA in the EGW samples was 100%, yielding 131 infections among the 94 samples. Of these cases, 72.3% were mono while 27.6% were multi-infections. Out of the 131 infections, the cumulative prevalence of HPV 6 and 11 was 71%. A total of 98.9% of the samples were carrying at least one of these genotypes, while 19.1% of the cases occurred with at least one high-risk genotype. Data from our study could provide invaluable information concerning the prevalence of HPV types among patients with EGW, enabling improved assessment of the actual and future efficacy of vaccination programs, vaccine development, and forecast changes in infection patterns.

Abstract
Microbial cells are well known to be capable of remaining viable when desiccated, and a variety of beneficial microorganisms can thus be preserved for storage. For the ubiquitous widely studied soil bacterium Azospirillum brasilense (wild-type strain Sp7), which has a significant agrobiotechnological potential owing to its plant-growth-promoting capabilities perspective for its use in biofertilisers, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy (in the diffuse reflectance mode, DRIFT) was used to control the state of biomass, together with 57Fe transmission Mössbauer spectroscopy to monitor intracellular iron speciation in live rapidly frozen cell suspension and in the lyophilised biomass (both measured at T = 80 K). It has been shown for the first time that a relatively large part of ferrous iron in live cells (22% of the whole cellular iron pool, represented by two high-spin Fe(II) forms, in the 18-h culture grown on 57Fe(III) complex with nitrilotriacetic acid as the sole source of iron) gets largely oxidised upon lyophilisation. The remaining part of iron(II) in the resulting dry biomass was found to be ca. 3% only. The major part of ferric iron in the dry biomass was shown to be comprised of ferritin-like ferric species (giving a typical magnetically split sextet at T = 5 K), while the iron(III) formed from cellular iron(II) by oxidation in air in the course of drying remained in a paramagnetic state even at T = 5 K. The possibility of intracellular iron(II) oxidation to iron(III) upon desiccation may be a specific natural strategy to avoid cell damage caused by Fenton-type reactions in dormant (frozen, dried) cells. The results obtained may have important implications related to iron speciation and redox transformations in dried bacterial preparations intended for long-term storage.

Abstract
Introduction: Endometrial cancer is the most common invasive gynecologic malignancy in developed countries. The best survival rates are expected after surgical removal, thus the aim of a complex treatment is to achieve resecability in locally and locoregionally advanced disease. Aim: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate if the neoadjuvant systemic treatment leads to better overall survival compared to irradiation solely. Method: From January 2015 to December 2018, we enrolled 28 patients diagnosed with irresecable, locally and locoregionally advanced high-risk endometrial carcinoma. Patients were treated by neoadjuvant paclitaxel-carboplatin, then radical hysterectomy, bilateral oophorectomy and lymphadenectomy were performed. Results: After administration of 6 cycles of carboplatin-paclitaxel, the control MR test showed tumor shrinkage in all patients. Complete resection was achieved in the case of every patient. Tumor residuum in lymph nodes was verified in 4 cases by pathological evaluation. The 2-year survival and the 2-year progression-free survival rates were 65,1% and 66,1%, respectively. The median overall survival was 16,5 months. Conclusion: Neoadjuvant treatment can be an effective approach in providing the conditions for complete tumor resection, which may result in survival advantage. Abstract
We report the case of a 60-year-old man who exhibited trigeminal autonomic symptoms on his right side (numbness of the face, reddening of the eye, nasal congestion) occurring several times a day, for a maximum of 60 se-conds, without any pain. The complaints were similar to trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia, just without any headache. Our 60-year-old male patient underwent a craniocervical MRI as part of his neurological workup, which revealed lesions indicative of demyelination. Further testing was guided (ophthalmological examination, VEP, CSF test) by the presumptive diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. It is likely that in his case the cause of these trigeminal and autonomic paroxysms is MS. Here we present an overview of the few cases we found in the literature, although we did not find any similar case reports. Perhaps the most interesting among these is one in which the author describes a family: a 54-year-old female exhibiting the autonomic characteristics of an episodic cluster headache, only without actual headache, her son, who had typical episodic cluster headaches with autonomic symptoms, and the woman's father, whose short-term periorbital headaches were present without autonomic symptoms. We had not previously encountered a case of trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia without headache in our practice, nor have we had an MS patient exhibiting similar neurologic symptoms. The significance of our case lies in its uniqueness.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the nuclear expression of histone methyltransferase enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) in endocervical neoplastic lesions such as invasive endocervical adenocarcinoma (ECA) and cervical in situ adenocarcinoma (AIS) in comparison with normal endocervix and non-neoplastic counterparts. A total of 54 consecutive neoplastic cases (37 ECA, 17 AIS) and 32 non-neoplastic endocervical lesions (15 reactive atypia, 9 microglandular hyperplasia, 3 tuboendometrioid metaplasia, 3 tunnel cluster, 2 endometriosis) were included in the study with adjacent normal endocervix if present. EZH2 immunoreactivity was evaluated semiquantitatively by three independent experts in lesions and adjacent normal glandular epithelium as well. EZH2 expression was defined robust if at least two of the three experts rated partial or diffuse positivity. Robust EZH2 expression was statistically compared among the neoplastic, non-neoplastic, and normal glandular epithelium samples. Diagnostic test capability of robust EZH2 expression was calculated. Fifty-three out of the 54 neoplastic cases (98%) showed robust EZH2 expression. Robust EZH2 expression was significantly less often (4 out of 32 cases, 12.5%) found in the non-neoplastic endocervical lesions (p < 0.0001) and never (0 out of 66 samples) in the adjacent normal glandular epithelium. Robust EZH2 overexpression had a sensitivity and specificity of over 95% in detecting neoplastic lesions versus non-neoplastic lesions or normal glandular epithelium. EZH2 may play a role in the pathogenesis of endocervical neoplasia, and the detection of robust expression of EZH2 might be a useful differential diagnostic tool in problematic endocervical lesions in histology and cytology as well.

Abstract
Fe uptake machinery of chloroplasts prefers to utilise Fe(III)-citrate over Fe-nicotianamine complexes. Iron uptake in chloroplasts is a process of prime importance. Although a few members of their iron transport machinery were identified, the substrate preference of the system is still unknown. Intact chloroplasts of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) were purified and subjected to iron uptake studies using natural and artificial iron complexes. Fe-nicotianamine (NA) complexes were characterised by 5 K, 5 T Mössbauer spectrometry. Expression of components of the chloroplast Fe uptake machinery was also studied. Fe(III)-NA contained a minor paramagnetic Fe(II) component (ca. 9%), a paramagnetic Fe(III) component exhibiting dimeric or oligomeric structure (ca. 20%), and a Fe(III) complex, likely being a monomeric structure, which undergoes slow electronic relaxation at 5 K (ca. 61%). Fe(II)-NA contained more than one similar chemical Fe(II) environment with no sign of Fe(III) components. Chloroplasts preferred Fe(III)-citrate compared to Fe(III)-NA and Fe(II)-NA, but also to Fe(III)-EDTA and Fe(III)-o,o'EDDHA, and the Km value was lower for Fe(III)-citrate than for the Fe-NA complexes. Only the uptake of Fe(III)-citrate was light-dependent. Regarding the components of the chloroplast Fe uptake system, only genes of the reduction-based Fe uptake system showed high expression. Chloroplasts more effectively utilize Fe(III)-citrate, but hardly Fe-NA complexes in Fe uptake.

Abstract
The response of the antimicrobial compounds sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) - individually and in mixtures - to ionizing radiation was investigated using laboratory prepared mixtures and a commercial pharmaceutical formulation. The residual antibacterial activity of the solutions was monitored using Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli test strains. Based on antibacterial activity, SMX was more susceptible to ionizing radiation as compared to TMP. The antibacterial activity of SMX and TMP was completely eliminated at 0.2 kGy and 0.8 kGy, respectively. However, when SMX and TMP were in a mixture, the dose required to eliminate the antibacterial activity was 10 kGy, implying a synergistic antibacterial activity when these are present in mixtures. Only when the antibiotic concentration was below the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of TMP (i.e., 2 µmol dm-3) did the antibacterial activity of the SMX and TMP mixture disappear. These results imply that the synergistic antimicrobial activity of antimicrobial compounds in pharmaceutical waste streams is a strong possibility. Therefore, antimicrobial activity assays should be included when evaluating the use of ionizing radiation technology for the remediation of pharmaceutical or municipal waste streams.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND AIM The aim of our study was to evaluate the prognostic factors and treatment options of a very rare and highly aggressive type of uterine neoplasms, the malignant mixed Müllerian tumor, known as carcinosarcoma. METHOD Between 2009 and 2017, 29 patients were treated with malignant mixed Müllerian tumor. At stage I, surgery and postoperative radiotherapy were performed. At stages II-IV, trimodal treatment (surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy) was administered. RESULTS The average age of patients was 68.51 (49-90) years, mean body mass index was 30.22 (20.90-37.22). We have experienced recurrence of disease after complete resection in 6 cases (4 of 6 patients did not accept radiation therapy). Local recurrence has occurred after an average 15.52 (6-36) months, distant metastasis with an average 19.2 (8-32) months. Overall survival was 11.92 (1-75) months. Six patients are free of tumours at the moment. CONCLUSIONS As overall survival has not increased in recent decades by using combined chemotherapy, there is no congruent consensus associated with the optimal treatment. The standard surgical treatment is total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy, although due to high rates of recurrence and metastases, the necessity of lymphadenectomy and postoperative treatment is in the focus of recent studies. Though postoperative irradiation improves local control, the beneficial effect on overall survival is still not proven. Adjuvant chemotherapy decreases the rate of both pelvic and extrapelvic recurrence at the same time, although there is no recommendation for the optimal chemoterapeutic agent. Multimodal therapy should lead to better outcomes. Recently there are many ongoing studies with biologic and target therapies to improve efficiency, however, the relevant results will be disclosed in many years only, due to the small number of patients. Abstract
Numerous studies have been published on the radiolysis of sulfonamide antibiotic solutions but little effort has been made to monitor the biological properties of degradation products. A complex approach should also clarify the changes in antibacterial activity and biodegradability, besides the usual screening of toxicity. To fill this gap, the ionizing radiation induced degradation of four sulfonamide antibiotics was investigated in dilute aqueous solutions, with emphasis on the biological assessment of decomposition products. Complete removal of sulfonamides was achieved by a low absorbed dose (1.5kGy). 2-2.5kGy dose was needed to transform the persistent initial molecules to substances biodegradable in both river water and activated sludge. The ratio of the biological and chemical oxygen demand increased from <0.21 to at least 0.59, but values as high as 0.80 were also measured. It was demonstrated that antibacterial activity is due to the initial molecules, as it disappeared when the sulfamethoxazole concentration decreased below the minimal inhibitory concentration (30 μM). This means that the products have no antibacterial activity. Toxicity testing performed on test organisms from three different trophic levels and activated sludge evidenced that the toxicity depends both on the test organism and on the sulfonamide used. The degradation of initial molecules is not always enough to eliminate the environmental risk due to the toxic products formed e.g. inhibitory effects to Vibrio fischeri increased by 34% at 2.5kGy. For this reason, complex biological assessment of treated solutions has to play an important role in development and optimization of advanced treatment techniques.

Abstract
Variations in human infants' attachment behavior are associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the oxytocin receptor (OXTR) gene, suggesting a genetic component to infant-mother attachment. However, due to the genetic relatedness of infants and their mothers, it is difficult to separate the genetic effects of infants' OXTR genotype from the environmental effects of mothers' genotype possibly affecting their parental behavior. The apparent functional analogy between child-parent and dog-owner relationship, however, offers a way to disentangle the effects of these factors because pet dogs are not genetically related to their caregivers. In the present study we investigated whether single nucleotide polymorphisms of pet dogs' OXTR gene (-213AG,-94TC,-74CG) and their owners' OXTR gene (rs53576, rs1042778, rs2254298) are associated with components of dog-owner attachment. In order to investigate whether social-environmental effects modulate the potential genetic influence on attachment, dogs and their owners from two different countries (Austria and Hungary, N = 135 in total) were tested in a modified version of the Ainsworth Strange Situation Test (SST) and questionnaires were also used to collect information about owner personality and attachment style. We coded variables related to three components of attachment behavior in dogs: their sensitivity to the separation from and interaction with the owner (Attachment), stress caused by the unfamiliar environment (Anxiety), and their responsiveness to the stranger (Acceptance). We found that (1) dogs' behavior was significantly associated with polymorphisms in both dogs' and owners' OXTR gene, (2) SNPs in dogs' and owners' OXTR gene interactively influenced dog-human relationship, (3) dogs' attachment behavior was affected by the country of origin, and (4) it was related to their owners' personality as well as attachment style. Thus, the present study provides evidence, for the first time, that both genetic variation in the OXTR gene and various aspects of pet dogs' environmental background are associated with their attachment to their human caregivers.

Abstract
Presence of the antidepressant fluoxetine in different water bodies has raised significant concerns due to its detrimental effects on non-targeted organisms, especially on fish. When seeking for an appropriate technology able to remove fluoxetine residue from a complex water matrix, special attention needs to be paid to the elimination of the neurophysiological activity that eventually lies behind the noxious effects of the parent compound. Our aim was to probe the applicability of advanced oxidation techniques for this purpose using in situ generated free radical system based on OH-initiated peroxyl radical-mediated processes. By performing product analysis experiments along with quantum chemical calculations, the most probable reaction paths were analyzed including aromatic hydroxylation, defluorination, O-dealkylation and C-dealkylation. The candidates for neurophysiological activity were further investigated by molecular docking. The hydroxylated derivatives are well accommodated in the binding pocket of the corresponding protein, suggesting that these compounds may retain the activity of the parent compound. From a worst-case perspective, we suggest that prolonged treatment needs to be applied to further transform hydroxylated derivatives.

Abstract
It has been suggested that dogs' remarkable capacity to use human communicative signals lies in their comparable social cognitive skills; however, this view has been questioned recently. The present study investigated associations between oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) polymorphisms and social behavior in human infants and dogs with the aim to unravel potentially differential mechanisms behind their responsiveness to human gaze. Sixteen-month-old human infants (N = 99) and adult Border Collie dogs (N = 71) participated in two tasks designed to test (1) their use of gaze-direction as a cue to locate a hidden object, and (2) their reactions to an aversive social interaction (using the still face task for children and a threatening approach task for dogs). Moreover, we obtained DNA samples to analyze associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in the OXTR (dogs: -213AG, -94TC, -74CG, rs8679682, children: rs53576, rs1042778, rs2254298) and behavior. We found that OXTR genotype was significantly associated with reactions to an aversive social interaction both in dogs and children, confirming the anxiolytic effect of oxytocin in both species. In dogs, the genotypes linked to less fearful behavior were associated also with a higher willingness to follow gaze whereas in children, OXTR gene polymorphisms did not affect gaze following success. This pattern of gene-behavior associations suggests that for dogs the two situations are more alike (potentially fear-inducing or competitive) than for human children. This raises the possibility that, in contrast to former studies proposing human-like cooperativeness in dogs, dogs may perceive human gaze in an object-choice task in a more antagonistic manner than children.

Abstract
The growing concern over the environmental risk of synthetic chelate application promotes the search for alternatives in Fe fertilization, such as biodegradable chelating agents and natural complexing agents. In this work, plant responses to the application of several Fe treatments (chelates and complexes) was analyzed to study their potential use in Fe fertilization under calcareous conditions. Thus, the root ferric chelate reductase (FCR) activity of soybean (Glycine max cv. Klaxon) plants was determined, and the effectiveness of the Fe chelates and complexes assessed in a pot experiment, by SPAD and fluorescence induction measurements, and the determination of Fe distribution in plant and soil. Additionally, 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was conducted to identify the Fe forms present in the soybean roots. The highest FCR activity was observed for the chelates EDDS/Fe3+ and IDHA/Fe3+; while no activity was observed when using complexes as Fe substrates. In contrast to the FCR data, the pot experiment confirmed that the o,oEDDHA/Fe3+ is the most effective treatment, and the complexes LS/Fe3+ and GA/Fe3+ are able to alleviate Fe chlorosis, also indicated by SPAD data and the maximal quantum efficiency of photosystem II reaction centers as vitality parameters, and the enhanced plant uptake of Fe from natural sources.

Abstract
Manganese (Mn) is a toxic heavy metal exposing workers in various occupational settings and causing, among others, nervous system damage. Metal fumes of welding, a typical source of Mn exposure, contain a complex mixture of metal oxides partly in nanoparticle form. As toxic effects of complex substances cannot be sufficiently understood by examining its components separately, general toxicity and functional neurotoxicity of a main pathogenic welding fume metal, Mn, was examined alone and combined with iron (Fe) and chromium (Cr), also frequently found in fumes. Oxide nanoparticles of Mn, Mn + Fe, Mn + Cr and the triple combination were applied, in aqueous suspension, to the trachea of young adult Wistar rats for 4 weeks. The decrease of body weight gain during treatment, caused by Mn, was counteracted by Fe, but not Cr. At the end of treatment, spontaneous and evoked cortical electrical activity was recorded. Mn caused a shift to higher frequencies, and lengthened evoked potential latency, which were also strongly diminished by co-application of Fe only. The interaction of the metals seen in body weight gain and cortical activity were not related to the measured blood and brain metal levels. Fe might have initiated protective, e.g. antioxidant, mechanisms with a more general effect.

Abstract
Earthquakes hit urban centres in Europe infrequently, but occasionally with disastrous effects. Obtaining an unbiased view of seismic hazard (and risk) is therefore very important. In principle, the best way to test probabilistic seismic hazard assessments (PSHAs) is to compare them with observations that are entirely independent of the procedure used to produce PSHA models. Arguably, the most valuable information in this context should be information on long-term hazard, namely maximum intensities (or magnitudes) occurring over time intervals that are at least as long as a seismic cycle. The new observations can provide information of maximum intensity (or magnitude) for long timescale as an input data for PSHA studies as well. Long-term information can be gained from intact stalagmites in natural caves. These formations survived all earthquakes that have occurred over thousands of years, depending on the age of the stalagmite. Their 'survival' requires that the horizontal ground acceleration (HGA) has never exceeded a certain critical value within that time period. Here, we present such a stalagmite-based case study from the Little Carpathians of Slovakia. A specially shaped, intact and vulnerable stalagmite in the Plavecká priepast cave was examined in 2013. This stalagmite is suitable for estimating the upper limit of horizontal peak ground acceleration generated by prehistoric earthquakes. The critical HGA values as a function of time going back into the past determined from the stalagmite that we investigated are presented. For example, at the time of Jókő event (1906), the critical HGA value cannot have been higher than 1 and 1.3 m/s2 at the time of the assumed Carnuntum event (∼340 AD), and 3000 years ago, it must have been lower than 1.7 m/s2. We claimed that the effect of Jókő earthquake (1906) on the location of the Plavecká priepast cave is consistent with the critical HGA value provided by the stalagmite we investigated. The approach used in this study yields significant new constraints on the seismic hazard, as tectonic structures close to Plavecká priepast cave did not generate strong earthquakes in the last few thousand years. The results of this study are highly relevant given that the two capitals, Vienna and Bratislava, are located within 40 and 70 km of the cave, respectively.

Abstract
In the emission (57Co) variant of Mössbauer spectroscopy (EMS), the 57Co radionuclide (with a half-life of 9months) is used that undergoes a nuclear decay 57Co→57Fe via electron capture followed by the emission of a γ-quantum, the energy of which is modified by the chemical state and the close coordination environment of the parent 57Co atom. While EMS has been used largely in materials science and nuclear chemistry, its high sensitivity can also be of great advantage in revealing fine structural features and for speciation analysis of biological complexes, whenever the 57Co2+ cation can be used directly as the coordinating metal or as a substitute for native cobalt or other metal ions. As such EMS applications are yet rare, in order to reliably interpret emission spectra of sophisticated 57Co2+-doped biosystems, model EMS studies of simple cobalt biocomplexes are necessary. In this work, EMS spectroscopic data are analysed and discussed for 57Co2+ complexes with a range of small biomolecules of different structures, including 4-n-hexylresorcinol, homoserine lactone and a few amino acids (spectra measured in rapidly frozen dilute aqueous solutions or in the dried state at T=80K). The EMS data obtained are discussed with regard to the available literature data related to the coordination modes of the biocomplexes under study.

Abstract
Brachypodium distachyon, a small annual grass with seed storage globulins as primary protein reserves was used in our study to analyse the toxic nature of non-prolamin seed storage proteins related to celiac disease. The main storage proteins of B. distachyon are the 7S globulin type proteins and the 11S, 12S seed storage globulins similar to oat and rice. Immunoblot analyses using serum samples from celiac disease patients were carried out followed by the identification of immune-responsive proteins using mass spectrometry. Serum samples from celiac patients on a gluten-free diet, from patients with Crohn’s disease and healthy subjects, were used as controls. The identified proteins with intense serum-IgA reactivity belong to the 7S and 11–12S seed globulin family. Structure prediction and epitope predictions analyses confirmed the presence of celiac disease-related linear B cell epitope homologs and the presence of peptide regions with strong HLA-DQ8 and DQ2 binding capabilities. These results highlight that both MHC-II presentation and B cell response may be developed not only to prolamins but also to seed storage globulins. This is the first study of the non-prolamin type seed storage proteins of Brachypodium from the aspect of the celiac disease.

Abstract
Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and Transient Receptor Potential Ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) expressed mainly by primary sensory neurons function as major nociceptive integrators. They are also present on the rat endometrium in an oestrogen-regulated manner. TRPV1 is upregulated in peritoneal and ovarian endometriosis patients, but there is no information about TRPA1 and their pathophysiological significances. In this study, patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery were investigated: severe dysmenorrhoea due to rectosigmoid deep infiltrating endometriosis ( n = 15), uterine fibroid-induced moderate dysmenorrhoea ( n = 7) and tubal infertility with no pain ( n = 6). TRPA1 and TRPV1 mRNA and protein expressions were determined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction and semi-quantitative immunohistochemistry from the endometrium samples taken by curettage. Results were correlated with the clinical characteristics including pain intensity. TRPA1 and TRPV1 receptors were expressed in the healthy human endometrium at mRNA and protein levels. Sparse, scattered cytoplasmic TRPA1 and TRPV1 immunopositivities were found in the stroma and epithelial layers. We detected upregulated mRNA levels in deep infiltrating endometriosis lesions, and TRPV1 gene expression was also elevated in autocontrol endometrium of deep infiltrating endometriosis patients. Histological scoring revealed significant TRPA1 and TRPV1 difference between deep infiltrating endometriosis stroma and epithelium, and in deep infiltrating endometriosis epithelium compared to control samples. Besides, we measured elevated stromal TRPV1 immunopositivity in deep infiltrating endometriosis. Stromal TRPA1 and TRPV1 immunoreactivities strongly correlated with dysmenorrhoea severity, as well TRPV1 expression on ectopic epithelial cells and macrophages with dyspareunia. Epithelial TRPA1 and stromal TRPV1 immunopositivity also positively correlated with dyschezia severity. We provide the first evidence for the presence of non-neuronal TRPA1 receptor in the healthy human endometrium and confirm the expression of TRPV1 channels. Their upregulations in rectosigmoid deep infiltrating endometriosis lesions and correlations with pain intensity suggest potential roles in pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease.

Abstract
Dogs have been proven to show several human-analogue social behaviors, and recent research raises the possibility that the oxytocin system is related to these. However, despite dogs' general tendency to excel in the domain of social cognition, there is increasing evidence that dogs' ability to utilize human signals may vary with breed. Moreover, breeds may show differences not only in their 'inborn' communicative abilities, but also in their learning skills related to these. The aim of the present study was to explore breed differences and breed-specific effects of oxytocin administration on different aspects of social responsiveness. Dogs from two markedly different breeds, Border Collies (cooperative workers) and Siberian Huskies (independent workers) were tested. After having received intranasal administration of oxytocin or placebo, subjects participated in three behavioral tests measuring social responsiveness. Our results show that there are several behavioral differences between the two breeds and also that there are differential effects of the oxytocin treatment. Border Collies were in general more susceptible to the 'social' effects of oxytocin compared to Siberian Huskies: after oxytocin administration they (1) looked more at the experimenter in the 'Unreachable food' situation, (2) looked more at the owner and shifted their gaze more between the sound source and the owner in a potentially dangerous situation, and (3) looked longer at the experimenter's eyes in the 'Tolerance of prolonged eye contact' test. These findings suggest that selection for enhanced cooperative abilities, possibly complemented by the effect of different social environments the two breeds experience, affects dogs' performance in several behavioral tests and that the neurohormonal background differently modulates social behavior in different working breeds.
