Abstract
Trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) is a contaminant with toxic activity. Its presence in waters and soils is usually related to industrial activities such as tanneries. The aim of this study was to compare the removal of Cr(III) in hydroponic solutions and tannery effluents using two floating macrophytes: Salvinia auriculata and Eichhornia crassipes. First, to determine the chromium removal capacity in solution and the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) in tissues of each plant, experiments were set up with contaminated solutions with Cr(III) concentrations of 2, 5, 10, 20, and 40 mg/L. Subsequently, both plant species were exposed to a primary tannery effluent contaminated with 12 mg/L of Cr(III) in order to study the removal capacity of organic and inorganic matter, as well as the acute toxicity in the water flea (Daphnia magna) and genotoxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Tests carried out on nutrient solutions revealed that both plants have a high capacity for removing Cr(III) in solution. The BAF in tissues was higher in E. crassipes compared to S. auriculata. In the experiments with a tannery effluent, both species presented low nutrient and organic matter removal efficiency, but they showed good Cr(III) removal capacity, with average reduction values of 57% for S. auriculata and 54% for E. crassipes after 72 h of exposure. E. crassipes contributed most to the reduction in acute toxicity in D. magna, while S. auriculata did not show a similar effect. However, both plant species managed to reduce the genotoxicity marker in D. rerio when compared with the initial effluent and the control.

Abstract
We report a method for remote excitation of the RF signal for preclinical-equivalent ultra high field Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). A parallel-plate waveguide together with a bio-inspired surface coil were used to perform remote excitation experiments to acquire images with a small-bore MR imager at 15.2 T. The imager bore size limits the RF coil transmitter dimensions, so the Gielis super-formula was used to design an RF coil with small dimensions. Electromagnetic simulations of the principal mode were run to study the waveguide filled with air and loaded with a saline solution-filled tube. Radiation patterns were also computed in a semi-anechoic chamber for the same scenarios as above. A saline solution-filled spherical phantom and a formaldehyde-fixed mouse phantom were used to acquire images. Radiation patterns showed an omnidirectional distribution with no side lobes, and a very smooth behaviour with almost no loss of information in the saline solution-filled tube and without. The theoretical wave impedance was calculated and compared with simulated results showing an excellent correspondence. Spherical phantom image data and simulation results of B1 were contrasted and showed an important correlation. Ex vivo mouse images were of high quality and exhibited clear delineation of anatomical structures. These imaging results are in very good agreement with the simulations. Numerical, theoretical and experimental results validate this approach, using a bio-inspired surface coil with a simple waveguide for preclinical small-bore MRI at ultra high field.

Abstract
Se presenta un tratamiento taxonómico para las especies del género Briza (Poaceae) en la Península Ibérica e Islas Baleares, en el ámbito del proyecto Flora iberica. Este tratamiento se fundamenta en la revisión de 2494 especímenes que proceden de diversos herbarios, tanto españoles como del resto de Europa, y en el estudio comparativo de caracteres morfológicos asociados a 112 especímenes conservados en MA, mediante el análisis de variables biométricas. Reconocemos un total de tres especies en el territorio mencionado. Además de las descripciones morfológicas, se incluye información adicional sobre su distribución, hábitat y número cromosomático, además de una clave para la determinación de las especies tratadas y una ilustración de Briza media.

Abstract
This article describes the use of Success Case Method (Brinkerhoff, 2003) to evaluate health promotion and public health training programs. The goal of the Office Community Research and Engagement (OCRE) of the Puerto Rico Clinical and Translational Research Consortium (PRCTRC) is to establish a stable and sustainable translational research capacity. Early efforts toward achieving this goal included sponsoring two independent research training programs. A description of the implementation of the five step Success Case Method is presented. Results reveal that SCM would deem both trainings as highly successful, based upon the overall impact of a low number of success cases. However, a traditional summative evaluation would consider this disappointing. Strengths of SCM are discussed. It was concluded that the Success Case Method is a useful and valuable evaluative method for measuring the success of health promotion and public health training initiatives and provides sufficient information for decision-making processes.

Abstract
Indicator-based approaches are often used to monitor land degradation and desertification from the global to the very local scale. However, there is still little agreement on which indicators may best reflect both status and trends of these phenomena. In this study, various processes of land degradation and desertification have been analyzed in 17 study sites around the world using a wide set of biophysical and socioeconomic indicators. The database described earlier in this issue by Kosmas and others (Environ Manage, 2013) for defining desertification risk was further analyzed to define the most important indicators related to the following degradation processes: water erosion in various land uses, tillage erosion, soil salinization, water stress, forest fires, and overgrazing. A correlation analysis was applied to the selected indicators in order to identify the most important variables contributing to each land degradation process. The analysis indicates that the most important indicators are: (i) rain seasonality affecting water erosion, water stress, and forest fires, (ii) slope gradient affecting water erosion, tillage erosion and water stress, and (iii) water scarcity soil salinization, water stress, and forest fires. Implementation of existing regulations or policies concerned with resources development and environmental sustainability was identified as the most important indicator of land protection.

Abstract
An approach to derive relationships for defining land degradation and desertification risk and developing appropriate tools for assessing the effectiveness of the various land management practices using indicators is presented in the present paper. In order to investigate which indicators are most effective in assessing the level of desertification risk, a total of 70 candidate indicators was selected providing information for the biophysical environment, socio-economic conditions, and land management characteristics. The indicators were defined in 1,672 field sites located in 17 study areas in the Mediterranean region, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Based on an existing geo-referenced database, classes were designated for each indicator and a sensitivity score to desertification was assigned to each class based on existing research. The obtained data were analyzed for the various processes of land degradation at farm level. The derived methodology was assessed using independent indicators, such as the measured soil erosion rate, and the organic matter content of the soil. Based on regression analyses, the collected indicator set can be reduced to a number of effective indicators ranging from 8 to 17 in the various processes of land degradation. Among the most important indicators identified as affecting land degradation and desertification risk were rain seasonality, slope gradient, plant cover, rate of land abandonment, land-use intensity, and the level of policy implementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease, renal failure, retinopathy, and neuropathy. Over the last years, there has been an increasing demand in folk medicine for natural sources that could help in the treatment of chronic diseases, including diabetes. The rind of passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. Flavicarpa) is traditionally used as a functional food due to its high concentration of soluble and insoluble fiber. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the effect of high-fiber diet albedo of passion fruit on the metabolic and biochemical profile in diabetic rats induced by alloxan (2%). DESIGN The passion fruit mesocarp fiber was dried in an oven with circulating air at 60°C and pulverized. We used 32 adult male rats, divided into 4 groups: Wistar group 1 control (GC), Wistar group 2, 15% fiber (GF15), Wistar group 3, 30% fiber (GF30), Wistar group 4, fiber disolved in water (GFH2O). The ratio of passion fruit was prepared according to the AIN 93M guidelines, varying only the source of dietary fiber. The corresponding diet for each group was offered to the animals for 60 days. RESULTS There was a statically significant decrease in plasma glucose for GFH2O, GF15%, and GF30% groups with 27.0%, 37.4%, and 40.2%, respectively. CONCLUSION The use of mesocarp fiber of passion fruit at concentrations of 15% and 30% are an important dietary supplement for the treatment of DM due to its potential hypoglycemic effect, and its ability to reduce triglycerides and VLDL-cholesterol levels with a principal reduction of insulin and leptin.

Abstract
In rat sciatic nerves, IGF-I or bFGF was applied distal to a crush to evaluate their effects upon the restoration of the neuromuscular function. In comparison with the recovery following a simple crush, treatment with growth factors resulted in (i) enhanced elongation of regenerating axons ( + 24%) up to day 3 post lesion (PL); (ii) more sprouts at early times; (iii) reduced participation of macrophages in the removal of the degenerating myelin in the first week PL; (iv) restoration of the neuromuscular transmission 2 days earlier; (v) a prolonged relaxation time and a reduced specific tetanic tension at week 3 PL but not at week 7 PL. Other indicators of recovery such as conduction velocity of nerve impulse, muscle weight, specific twitch tension, and time to peak were not affected by bFGF or IGF-I. Results suggest that IGF-I and bFGF affect locally Schwann cells and axons, and also the neuron as a whole, including its trophic function. We conclude that IGF-I and bFGF applied to the nerve, albeit moderately, improve the recovery of the neuromuscular function.

Abstract
The corrected Waterman-Truell model and the Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique were used to analyze the ultrasonic wave dispersion in trabecular bones mimicking phantoms. A simple two-phase model of the trabecular bone is assumed; the trabeculae structure and the bone marrow. The phase velocity for frequencies within the range from 400kHz to 800kHz were computed for different scatterer arrays varying their dimensions and number. The theoretical and numerical results were compared to experimental published data, obtained from a mimicking phantom composed by a periodic array of nylon shreds (trabeculae array) immersed in a water tank. Our results showed an excellent consistency when compared to experimental data. The negative dispersions of -8.48m/s/MHz and -9.16m/s/MHz were computed by the multiple scattering method and the numerical approach, respectively, where the latter is closer to the experimental dispersion of -12.09m/s/MHz. Similar result has been reported in the literature, where the dispersion predicted by the Generalized Self-Consistent Method [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124 (2008) 4047] is -9.96m/s/MHz.

1. As found by Sordelli and Mayer, agar adsorbed on bacteria produces agar-reacting antibodies in animals injected with these organisms. 2. False cross-agglutination and precipitin reactions can be produced in sera containing agar-reacting antibodies by organisms grown on agar. Zozaya's publication in this field (3) requires partial revision on this account. 3. There is suggestive immunological evidence of chemical similarity between the specifically reactive groups of agar-agar, and the C substance of the pneumococcus.

Abstract
The trabecular bones are highly dispersive acoustic media composed by randomly shaped trabeculae (considered as scatterers) and surrounded by bone marrow. An acoustic wave generated by an incident ultrasonic pulse with respect to the media under study, shows that its velocity and amplitude are a function of the density size and shaped of the scatterers. Two different methods were used to theoretically study this scattering phenomena: i) a self-consistent model proposed by Sabina and Willis, and ii) the multiple-scattering theory of Waterman-Truell. These methods were able to compute the phase velocity and amplitude as a function of operating frequency, density and size of scatterers. The theoretical results were compared with experimental data already published and the phase veloctiy shows a good agreement for low concentration of scatterers.

Abstract
Obesity is an endemic health problem in most developed countries, requiring serious public health attention. The first Portuguese nationwide representative survey about obesity (with objective anthropometric measurement) was undertaken from 1995 to 1998. This paper presents data coming from the second and most recent nationwide representative study of obesity, with objective measurement of weight, height, waist and hip circumferences. Data were collected between January 2003 and January 2005. The survey collected objective body mass index (BMI) values of 8116 participants aged 18-64. Main findings were: 2.4% of the sample had low weight (BMI < 18.5), 39.4% were overweight (BMI between 25.0 and 29.9), and 14.2% obese (BMI > or = 30). Waist circumference measurement showed that 45.6% of the sample suffers increased cardiovascular health risks associated with high waist circumference. The overall overweight/obesity prevalence increased from 49.6% (in 1995-1998) to 53.6% (in 2003-2005). These data suggest that although obesity was identified as a public health problem one decade ago, action to reduce it does not seem to have been very effective to date. Well-defined public health intervention must be targeted to specific population groups where higher levels of obesity prevalence were found: low socioeconomic level groups and low-education level groups.

Abstract
Obesity is a serious health problem in developed countries. Knowledge of reliable and nationwide representative data is a must for any public health action. The dimension of this problem in Portugal was first assessed in 1995-1998. A similar populational survey using objective anthropometric measures is now being conducted (field work started in January 2003). A total of 6411 subjects aged 18-64 years old have already been measured and their respective body mass indexes (BMIs) calculated. Results from 2003 to 2005 show 38.6% is overweight and 13.8% has obesity. The total of overweight and obesity is 52.4%. In 1995-1998 survey, overweight was 35.2% and obesity was 14.4%. The total was 49.6%. These results suggest an increase of the overweight/obesity (altogether) prevalence in the last 10 years. Actual results show that more than half of the adult sample has excessive weight and 2.4% of the sample has low BMI. Finally, 45.6% of the sample suffers increased health risks because of high waist circumference (> or =80 cm for women; > or =94 cm for men). These results highlight the fact that, although obesity was identified as a public health problem one decade ago, action to reduce it does not seem to have been very effective to date.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine by nested PCR probe the presence of Neospora caninum in fetal brain tissue from aborted dairy fetuses in Aguascalientes, a state in the central part of Mexico. Forty-four fetal brains from eight dairy farms were analyzed using single tube nested PCR probe with primers NF1, NS2, NR1 and SR1, with histopathology as the reference technique. From the 44 bovine fetuses studied, 35 (80%) were diagnosed as being infected by N. caninum using PCR probe and 20 (45%) were considered positive by histopathology, because they had lesions suggestive of bovine neosporosis. Fair agreement was observed (31%) between both probes. The age of aborting cows ranged from 1.6 to 2.9-year-old in 17 (49%) of the positive cases diagnosed by PCR. Gestational ages of aborted fetuses ranged from <3 to 9 months, with average of 5.6 months, and no statistical significant difference was observed when ages of infected and no infected fetuses were compared (P > 0.05). The frequency of N. caninum positive cases observed could be considered to be higher than other areas of Mexico and other countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PROM) is associated with one-third of preterm births. In about 50% of preterm PROM cases, the fetuses will elicit a fetal inflammatory response syndrome (FIRS). FIRS is associated with the impending onset of preterm labor, periventricular leukomalacia, neonatal sepsis, and long-term handicap, including the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and cerebral palsy. The fetal myocardium is a potential target organ of proinflammatory cytokines released during FIRS. The objective of this study was to determine whether preterm PROM is associated with functional changes in the fetal heart, as determined by fetal echocardiography. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted to assess the diastolic function of fetuses with preterm PROM with documented microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (n = 25), preterm PROM without microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (n = 42), and fetuses from normal pregnancies (control group = 150). Pregnancies with multiple gestation, fetal distress, fetuses that were small for gestational age, and major congenital anomalies were excluded. Fetal echocardiography studies were performed with two-dimensional ultrasound, color Doppler imaging and pulsed Doppler ultrasound. Non-parametric statistics were used for comparisons. A p value of < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS The prevalence of positive amniotic fluid cultures for micro-organisms in patients with preterm PROM was 35.8% (24/67). Ureaplasma urealyticum was the most frequent isolate, either alone (41.7%; 10/24) or with other micro-organisms (29.2%; 7/24). Fetuses with preterm PROM had a higher delta early diastolic filling/atrial contraction (E/A) peak velocity ratio, a higher delta E/A velocity-time integral (VTI) ratio, a lower delta A peak velocity, a lower delta A VTI, and a lower A VTI/total VTI ratio in the mitral valve compared to those with uncomplicated pregnancies. The delta E/A peak velocity ratio was significantly higher and the delta A VTI significantly lower in fetuses with preterm PROM and microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity than in those with preterm PROM without microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity. CONCLUSIONS Preterm PROM is associated with changes in fetal cardiac function consistent with increased left ventricular compliance. These observations were also noted in fetuses with microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity. Our findings suggest that fetal cardiac function is altered in preterm PROM and, in particular, in cases with intra-amniotic infection.

Abstract
The authors present the results of a study conducted using time series data from the 1993--2001 period in order to characterise the clinical behaviour of bovine paratuberculosis. The case data, confirmed by macroscopic examination, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and comparative tuberculin test, came from the herd health register, located in Tandil in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The upper limit of customary variation was observed in April, with an incidence of 2.5%. In 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001 the disease was epidemic and a peak of 5.6% occurred in March 1999. Over the long term a rise in the total annual incidence was observed, from 0.7% in 1993 to 10.2% in 2001. Knowledge about the epidemiology of paratuberculosis will help to control the disease and minimise its impact on the national economy, and will also provide new information for use in public health.

Abstract
The expression patterns of the genes Wnt7b and Wnt8b were analyzed in the brain of chick embryos, having special emphasis in the forebrain. Our results indicated that, at early developmental stages, cWnt8b is expressed in the isthmic organizer and in other areas postulated as forebrain patterning centers, such as the avian cortical hem and the zona limitans intrathalamica (zli). Later in development, cWnt7b becomes expressed in regions neighboring and sometimes overlapping the cWnt8b domains, such as the thalamus on both sides of the zli, or the medial pallium adjacent to the cortical hem. This sequential expression of cWnt8b and cWnt7b is consistent with a role in the patterning and morphogenesis of these forebrain regions.

Abstract
The expression of R-cadherin and N-cadherin was mapped in the postnatal forebrain of the mouse by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Results show that the two molecules are expressed in specific and restricted patterns in numerous brain nuclei, gray matter areas and cortical layers that are widely distributed throughout the mouse forebrain at postnatal day 1. The expression pattern of R-cadherin is clearly distinct from that of N-cadherin, but overlap is observed in many areas. In many cortical areas, the two cadherins have a laminar-specific distribution that varies from region to region. In addition, immunohistochemical data revealed expression of R-cadherin protein and N-cadherin protein in the neuropil of many brain regions as well as in the axons that travel in fiber tracts such as the olfactory tract, the anterior commissure, the corpus callosum, the stria terminalis and the fornix. Often, subsets of axons within the same fiber tract differentially express R-cadherin and N-cadherin, with partial overlap of expression. The targets of the cadherin-immunoreactive fiber bundles often contain neuropil as well as cell bodies of neurons that also express the same type(s) of cadherin, suggesting that R-cadherin and N-cadherin may be involved in target recognition and the establishment of connections. Specifically, the expression of R-cadherin and N-cadherin is related to the maturation of thalamocortical sensory pathways, corticofugal pathways, and pathways associated with the hippocampal complex, the piriform cortex, and the amygdala. It is also related to the development of the cell groups associated with these pathways.Together, the results from the present study indicate the possibility that the selective adhesion of neural structures that express the same type(s) of cadherin contributes to the formation of gray matter areas, neural circuits and functional connections in the postnatal forebrain of the mouse.

Abstract
The expression of three cadherins (cadherin-6B, cadherin-7, and R-cadherin) was studied by immunohistochemistry in the telencephalon of chicken embryos at intermediate stages of development (11 and 15 days of incubation). Expression patterns were related to cytoarchitecture and to previously published data on functional connections and on the expression of gene regulatory proteins. Our results indicate that, like in other regions of the embryonic chicken brain, the expression of each cadherin is restricted to parts of embryonic divisions as well as to particular nuclei, areas or their subdivisions. The expression patterns are largely complementary with partial overlap. The regional expression of the cadherins respects the boundary between the pallium and the subpallium as well as between various pallial and subpallial subdivisions. Novel subdivisions were found in several telencephalic areas. For example, subjacent to the hyperstriatum, the neostriatum contains multiple islands of cells with a profile of cadherin expression that differs from the surrounding matrix ("island fields"). Moreover, the expression of each cadherin is apparently associated with parts of intratelencephalic neural circuits and of thalamopallial and basal ganglia pathways. These results support a role for cadherins in the aggregation and differentiation of gray matter structures within embryonic brain divisions. The cadherin immunostaining patterns are interpreted in the context of a recently proposed divisional scheme of the avian pallium that postulates medial, dorsal, lateral, and ventral divisions as complete radial histogenetic units (Puelles et al. [2000]).

Abstract
Fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFR) are widely expressed in many tissues and cell types, and the temporal expression of these receptors and their ligands play important roles in the control of development. There are four FGFR family members, FGFR-1-4, and understanding the ability of these receptors to transduce signals is central to understanding how they function in controlling differentiation and development. We have utilized signal transduction by FGF-1 in PC12 cells to compare the ability of FGFR-1 and FGFR-3 to elicit the neuronal phenotype. In PC12 cells FGFR-1 is much more potent in the induction of neurite outgrowth than FGFR-3. This correlated with the ability of FGFR-1 to induce robust and sustained activation of the Ras-dependent mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways. In contrast, FGFR-3 could not induce strong sustained Ras-dependent signals. In this study, we analyzed the ability of FGFR-3 to induce the expression of sodium channels, peripherin, and Thy-1 in PC12 cells because all three of these proteins are known to be induced via Ras-independent pathways. We determined that FGFR-3 was capable of inducing several Ras-independent gene expression pathways important to the neuronal phenotype to a level equivalent of that induced by FGFR-1. Thus, FGFR-3 elicits phenotypic changes primarily though activation of Ras-independent pathways in the absence of robust Ras-dependent signals.

Abstract
Biotinylated dextran amines (BDA) are highly sensitive tools for anterograde and retrograde pathway tracing studies of the nervous system. BDA can be reliably delivered into the nervous system by iontophoretic or pressure injection and visualized with an avidin-biotinylated HRP (ABC) procedure, followed by a standard or metal-enhanced diaminobenzidine (DAB) reaction. High molecular weight BDA (10 k) yields sensitive and exquisitely detailed labeling of axons and terminals, while low molecular weight BDA (3 k) yields sensitive and detailed retrograde labeling of neuronal cell bodies. The detail of neuronal cell body labeling can be Golgi-like. BDA tolerates EM fixation and processing well and can, therefore, be readily used in ultrastructural studies. Additionally, BDA can be combined with other anterograde or retrograde tracers (e.g. PHA-L or cholera toxin B fragment) and visualized either by multi-color DAB multiple-labeling - if permanent labels are desired, or by using multiple simultaneous immunofluorescence - if fluorescence viewing is desired. In the same manner, BDA pathway tracing and neurotransmitter immunolabeling can be combined. Note that BDA pathway tracing can also be combined with anterograde or retrograde labeling with fluorescent dextran amines, if one wishes to exclusively use tracers with the favorable transport properties and sensitivities of dextran amines. In this case, the BDA can be visualized together with the fluorescent dextran amines using fluorescence labeling for the BDA, or the fluorescent dextran amines can be visualized together with the BDA by multicolor DAB labeling via immunolabeling of the fluorescent dextran amines using anti-fluorophore antisera. BDA is, thus, a flexible and valuable pathway tracing tool that has gained widespread popularity in recent years.

Abstract
In mammals, the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is a glutamatergic diencephalic cell group that develops in the caudal hypothalamus and migrates to a position above the cerebral peduncle. By its input from the external pallidal segment and projection to the internal pallidal segment, STN plays a critical role in basal ganglia functions. Although the basal ganglia in birds is well developed, possesses the same major neuron types as in mammals, and plays a role in movement control similar to that in mammals, it has been uncertain whether birds possess an STN. We report here evidence indicating that the so-called anterior nucleus of the ansa lenticularis (ALa) is the avian homolog of mammalian STN. First, the avian ALa too develops within the mammillary hypothalamic area and migrates to a position adjacent to the cerebral peduncle. Second, ALa specifically receives input from dorsal pallidal neurons that receive input from enkephalinergic striatal neurons, as is true of STN. Third, ALa projects back to avian dorsal pallidum, as also the case for STN in mammals. Fourth, the neurons of ALa contain glutamate, and the target neurons of ALa in dorsal pallidum possess AMPA-type glutamate receptor profiles resembling those of mammalian pallidal neurons. Fifth, unilateral lesions of ALa yield behavioral disturbances and movement asymmetries resembling those observed in mammals after STN lesions. These various findings indicate that ALa is the avian STN, and they suggest that the output circuitry of the basal ganglia for motor control is similar in birds and mammals.

Abstract
To elucidate the organization and evolution of the tectorotundotelencephalic pathways in birds and reptiles, we reinvestigated at both light and electron microscopic levels the efferent projections of nucleus rotundus in a lizard, using the sensitive tracer biotinylated dextran amine. Our results indicate that nucleus rotundus projects to targets in the basal ganglia (lateral parts of striatum and olfactory tubercle and possibly the globus pallidus), the anterior dorsal ventricular ridge (ADVR), and the amygdaloid complex (the central and possibly lateral amygdaloid nuclei). In these targets, the rotundal axon terminals establish asymmetric, presumably excitatory synaptic contacts, usually with dendrites of local cells. In the ADVR, the rotundal projection terminates in two separate radial regions showing distinct cytoarchitecture: 1) a dorsolateral region that extends radially from the dorsolateral ADVR ventricular surface to the ventral part of the lateral cortex and 2) the lateral part of a ventromedial region that extends radially from the dorsomedial and medial ADVR ventricle to a superficial area interposed between the dorsolateral ADVR and the striatum. These two ADVR regions have different connections with the thalamus and telencephalon, which suggests that they may be involved in different degrees of integration. Our study also suggests that the rotundal projection to the ventromedial ADVR field of lizards may be comparable to the rotundoectostriatal/periectostriatal projection of birds. The connections and pathways involving nucleus rotundus suggest that this nucleus conveys visual information which may play a role in visuomotor, emotional, and visceral functions.

Abstract
Recent data on the expression of several homeobox genes in the embryonic telencephalon of mammals, birds and reptiles support the homology of a part of the avian pallium, named the Wulst, and at least the more-medial and superior parts of mammalian neocortex. This conclusion is also supported by previous embryological, topological and hodological data. Furthermore, new evidence on the connections and electrophysiological properties of specific subfields within the avian Wulst, and on the thalamic territories that project to these fields, supports the more-specific conclusion that a primary visual area and a primary somatosensory-somatomotor area are present in the avian Wulst; these areas are likely to be homologous to their counterparts in mammals. In spite of this, developmental, morphological and comparative evidence indicate that some structural and physiological traits that appear to be similar in the Wulst and neocortex (such as the lamination or binocularity) evolved independently in birds and mammals.

Abstract
Corticostriatal and thalamostriatal projection systems have been shown to utilize glutamate as a neurotransmitter in mammals and birds. Although corticostriatal and thalamostriatal projection systems have been demonstrated in turtles, it is uncertain whether they too use glutamate as their neurotransmitter. Immunohistochemical localization of glutamate and of NMDA- and AMPA-type ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits (NMDAR2A/B, GluR1, GluR2/3, and GluR4) were used to address this issue. Numerous medium-sized neurons that were rich in NMDAR2A/B and GluR2/3 were observed in the striatal part of the basal ganglia of red-eared turtles. Smaller numbers of medium-sized neurons and some large neurons rich in the GluR1 and GluR4 subunits were also observed in the striatum. The striatal neuropil was notably rich in GluR1, GluR2/3 and NMDAR2A/B subunits. The pallidal region was specifically rich in large neurons possessing GluR4 subunits. Consistent with the glutamate receptors on striatal and pallidal neurons, sources of input to the striatum and pallidum in turtle such as the dorsomedial and dorsolateral thalamic nuclei (which appear to correspond to intralaminar thalamic nuclei), telencephalic pallial cell groups, and the apparent subthalamic nucleus homologue were rich in glutamatergic neurons. The results show that the thalamostriatal, corticostriatal and subthalamo-pallidal projection systems of turtles are glutamatergic and that similar basal ganglia cell types in turtles and mammals have largely similar glutamate receptor characteristics.

Abstract
Single- and double-label immunohistochemical techniques using several different highly specific antisera against dynorphin peptides were used to examine the distribution of dynorphinergic terminals in globus pallidus and substantia nigra in rhesus monkeys and humans in comparison to substance P-containing and enkephalinergic terminals in these same regions. Similar results were observed in monkey and human tissue. Dynorphinergic fibers were very abundant in the medial half of the internal pallidal segment, but scarce in the external pallidal segment and the lateral half of the internal pallidal segment. In substantia nigra, dynorphinergic fibers were present in both the pars compacta and reticulata. Labeling of adjacent sections for enkephalin or substance P showed that the dynorphinergic terminals overlapped those for substance P in the medial half of the internal pallidal segment, but showed only slight overlap with enkephalinergic terminals in the external pallidal segment. The substance P-containing fibers were moderately abundant along the borders of the external pallidal segment, and enkephalinergic fibers were moderately abundant in parts of the internal pallidal segment. Dynorphinergic and substance P-containing terminals overlapped extensively in the nigra, and both extensively overlapped enkephalinergic fibers in medial nigra. Immunofluorescence double-labeling studies revealed that dynorphin co-localized extensively with substance P in individual fibers and terminals in the medial half of the internal pallidal segment and in substantia nigra. Thus, as has been found in non-primates, dynorphin within the striatum and its projection systems appears to be extensively localized to substance P-containing striatopallidal and striatonigral projection neurons. Nonetheless, our results also raise the possibility that a population of substance P-containing neurons that projects to the internal pallidal segment and does not contain dynorphin is present in primate striatum. Our results also suggest the possible existence of populations of striatopallidal and striatonigral projection neurons in which substance P and enkephalin or dynorphin and enkephalin, or all three, are co-localized. Thus, striatal projection neurons in primates may not consist of merely two types, one containing substance P and dynorphin and the other enkephalin.

Abstract
A total of 39 patients with a clinical diagnosis of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, in an endemic area for leishmaniasis in Salta, Argentina, were examined between June 1990 and December 1992. Of these cases, 87% (34/39) presented the cutaneous simple form, 10.3% the cutaneous multiple form and 2.6% the mucosal form. Lesions were more frequently located in legs and arms (71.8%), followed by trunk and multiple location (10.3%). Of the patients, 43% were housewives, students or children, suggesting that the infection could be contracted in the domestic or peridomestic environment. Of 39 patients diagnosed, in 22 (56.4%) the parasite was found. Direct microscopy (smear) permitted a diagnosis in 13 (59.4%) of these 22 patients. Among these, 5 (22.7%) had positive diagnosis by culture, and 9 (40.9%) by inoculation in hamsters. Ten parasite isolates (45.4%) were obtained. The smear is recommended as a diagnostic method for epidemiological surveillance due to the sensibility demonstrated herein and its easy application in the endemic area. The time of clinical evolution, from the appearance of the lesion up to the detection of the patient by Sanitary Agents, was approximately 90 days. This would be related to the frequency of the visits, usually every 3 months. Only one of 30 treated patients had a relapse at 6 months, due to non fulfillment of the treatment.

Abstract
To study how the basal ganglia can control movement in birds, we have reinvestigated the connections of the pigeon dorsal pallidum. Our results indicate that avian basal ganglia appear to control movement through major projections to several premotor pretectal and tegmental centres which innervate the tectum, and through a minor projection to a possible motor thalamic centre which innervates the Wulst. For such control, separate striatopallidal output circuits appear to exist in birds that are remarkably similar to those described in mammals, suggesting that avian and mammalian basal ganglia may control movement through similar mechanisms, and that the morphological substrate for such control evolved earlier than previously thought.

Abstract
To better understand the organization and evolution of the basal ganglia of vertebrates, in the present study we have analyzed the chemoarchitecture and the cortical input to the nucleus accumbens in the lacertid lizard Psammodromus algirus. The nucleus accumbens contains many gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-positive neurons and calbindin-positive neurons, the majority of which may be spiny projection neurons, and a few dispersed neuropeptide Y-positive neurons that likely represent aspiny interneurons. The nucleus accumbens contains two chemoarchitectonically different fields: a rostromedial field that stains heavily for substance P, dopamine, GABA(A) receptor, and a caudolateral field that stains only lightly to moderately for them, appearing more similar to the adjacent striatum. Injections of biotinylated dextran amine were placed in either the medial, dorsomedial, or dorsal cortices of Psammodromus. The medial and the dorsal cortices project heavily to the rostromedial field of the accumbens, whereas they project lightly to moderately to the caudolateral field. Cortical terminals make asymmetric, presumably excitatory, synaptic contacts with distal dendrites and the head of spines. Our results indicate that the hippocampal-like projection to the nucleus accumbens is similar between mammals and reptiles in that cortical terminals make mainly excitatory synapses on spiny, putatively projection neurons. However, our results and results from previous investigations indicate that important differences exist between the nucleus accumbens of mammals and reptiles regarding local modulatory interactions between cortical, dopaminergic, and cholinergic elements, which suggest that the reptilian nucleus accumbens may be as a whole comparable to the shell of the mammalian nucleus accumbens.
