Abstract
Indium(III) hydroxide (In(OH)3) powders prepared via Triton X-100 mediated hydrothermal method was sintered at different temperatures (400, 500 and 600°C) to yield indium(III) oxide nanoparticles (In2O3 NPs). Thermal studies of In(OH)3 confirmed complete conversion to In2O3 around 400°C. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of sintered In2O3 nanoparticles revealed the formation of phase pure cubic In2O3. The crystallite size of In2O3 NPs was increased from 12 to 26nm upon increasing the sintering temperature from 400°C to 600°C, while the percentage crystallinity was increased up to 90% after sintering at 600°C. A red shift in the band gap energy was observed with increasing sintering temperature due to the larger size of sintered In2O3 NPs. Room temperature photoluminescence spectra of the indium oxide nanoparticles showed both near band and excitonic emission of In2O3 due to oxygen vacancies.

Abstract
Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a rare distinct histologic variant of squamous - cell carcinoma of the head and neck region. BSCC is more aggressive and has a poorer prognosis, although histologically, it is associated with squamous cell carcinoma and squamous atypia. The usual site of occurrence for BSCC is the upper aerodigestive tract, floor of the mouth and base of the tongue. This is a case report of an unusual case of BSCC of retromolar trigone, which is quite rare.

Abstract
The objective of this research was to determine the toluene removal efficiency and breakthrough time using commercially available coconut shell-based granular activated carbon in packed bed reactor. To study the effect of toluene removal and break point time of the granular activated carbon (GAC), the parameters studied were bed lengths (2, 3, and 4 cm), concentrations (5, 10, and 15 mg l(-1)) and flow rates (20, 40, and 60 ml/min). The maximum percentage removal of 90% was achieved and the maximum carbon capacity for 5 mg l(-1) of toluene, 60 ml/min flow rate and 3 cm bed length shows 607.14 mg/g. The results of dynamic adsorption in a packed bed were consistent with those of equilibrium adsorption by gravimetric method. The breakthrough time and quantity shows that GAC with appropriate surface area can be utilized for air cleaning filters. The result shows that the physisorption plays main role in toluene removal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the concepts, strategies and field results of a project to scale up prevention programmes and services for female sex workers (FSWs) in Karnataka, India. METHODS A strategy was developed to scale up urban sex worker interventions in 18 districts in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Macro-level coverage objectives were defined by mapping the urban locations where FSWs operate and estimating their population size. Prevention programmes were initiated in the urban locations that contained at least 90% of the estimated urban FSW population in each district. Within each location, a micro-planning process was used by FSW peer educators and outreach workers to design local outreach and service delivery plans. RESULTS An estimated 48 973 FSWs were distributed across 1551 locations and 6232 spots. Outreach was conducted by 1043 peer educators. Services were provided through 170 drop-in centres, 93 programme-run clinics, 110 outreach clinics and 157 referral clinics. Within the first 3 years of the programme the cumulative number of individual FSWs contacted at least once was >78 000, with monthly contact established with 81% of the in situ population; >45 000 FSWs had visited a clinic and >10 000 visited monthly. Direct and indirect condom distribution by the programme amounted to more than 30 per contacted FSW, which is estimated to meet the condom requirement. CONCLUSIONS A strategy that involves geographically defined coverage and micro-level outreach planning can rapidly and effectively provide outreach and services to large dispersed FSW populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the anti-proteinuric effect of ramipril and verapamil in patients with steroid-resistant idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. Twenty one (21) cases of steroid-resistant idiopathic nephrotic syndrome were randomized to receive ramipril (11) and verapamil (10) and were followed up for 12 months; monthly for the 1st 3 months and then every 3 months for the remaining study period. The degree of reduction of proteinuria, blood pressure, serum creatinine, serum albumin and side effects were noted between the two groups. The comparison within the groups over different time periods was made using paired 't' test and between the groups for specific time period by unpaired 't' test. The level of significance was taken as 5% or below. RESULTS Seventeen patients (nine in the ramipril group and eight in the verapamil group) completed the study. The mean age of the patients, duration of illness, 24 hours urinary excretion of protein, mean arterial pressure, serum creatinine, cholesterol and albumin were similar in both the groups at time of randomization. The 24 hours urinary protein excretion decreased from 6319.44 +/- 1971.70 mg/day to 1852.44 +/- 1813.74 mg/day in patients receiving ramipril and from 5332.87 +/- 1947.47 mg /day to 2759.37 +/- 1929.6 mg/day in patients treated with verapamil after 12 months. There was no statistically significant difference in the reduction of proteinuria between the two groups. However, reduction in proteinuria was statistically significant from 2nd month onwards in Ramipril group and reduction was sustained throughout the study period. Reduction in mean arterial pressure was better achieved in Ramipril groups. The change in the serum potassium, creatinine, cholesterol and albumin were similar in either group of patients. Cough (2), hypotension (1) and reversible rise in serum creatinine (1) were observed with ramipril and no side effect was noted with verapamil. CONCLUSION Both ramipril and verapamil can reduce proteinuria in patients suffering from steroid-resistant idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. However, ramipril had a better and sustained reduction in proteinuria with well-controlled mean arterial pressure. Verapamil can be considered as an alternative to ramipril when the use of the latter is not tolerated because of side effects and/or worsening of renal function in patients with chronic renal insufficiency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze incidence, clinical feature and outcome of acute renal failure due to Plasmodium vivax malaria. MATERIAL & METHOD This is retrospective analysis of smear positive Plasmodium vivax patients with acute renal failure between Jan 1995 to Dec 2000. RESULT Out of 577 cases of ARF, 93 [falciparum 74 (79.61%); vivax 19 (20.4%)] were related to complicated malaria. 3.2% (19/577) patients, 16 males and three females with age range 17-72, mean 43.3 +/- 13.4 years were due to vivax malaria. Thirteen had only vivax and six had mixed falciparum and vivax infection. The presenting features were fever (100%), jaundice (36.8%), hypotension--eight (42%), encephalopathy--11 (57.9%), sepsis--five (26.3%) and DIC--four (21%). The probable contributory factors for ARF were heavy parasitemia--11 (57.9%), hypotension--six (31.5%), hyperbilirubinemia--seven (36.8%), hemolysis--eight (42%) and DIC--four (21%). Oliguria was present in 47.3%, 13 (68.4%) patients required dialysis. Mortality was noted in 15.7% (3/19) patients. CONCLUSIONS P. vivax malaria can cause ARF, which occurs more commonly in P. falciparum malaria. Renal ischemia is the dominant pathogenic mechanism that results in acute tubular necrosis. The prognosis of ARF in P. vivax malaria is favorable.

Abstract
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was developed for the detection of Egg drop syndrome 1976 (EDS-76) virus in tissues, namely in the uterus, spleen and buffy coat. It was also used to study the persistence of the virus in tissues of experimentally infected layer birds. The PCR assay could detect as little as 10 fg of purified EDS-76 viral DNA. It also amplified the DNA of Fowl adenovirus serotypes 4 (FAV-4) and 8 (FAV-8). The virus persisted in the uterus up to day 21 post infection (p.i.). Detection of EDS-76 viral DNA in the buffy coat could be useful for studying the occurrence of the respective disease in layer bird flocks.

Abstract
The C-erbB-2 proto-oncogene encodes the production of a cell surface receptor protein, with tyrosine kinase activity. Over expression of this gene either due to gene amplification and/or increased transcription has been observed and has been correlated with poor prognosis in patients with Breast (10-33%) and ovarian (20-33%) cancers. The very low levels of expression of C-erbB-2 by normal tissues makes this receptor a potential target for diagnosis and therapy with Monoclonal antibodies raised against its extracellular domain. One such monoclonal antibody designated as CIBCgp185 of IgG2a isotype has been generated in our laboratory using BT474 breast carcinoma cell line as immunogen. This monoclonal antibody immunoprecipitated a 185 KD glycoprotein. The specificity of this antibody was confirmed by the formation of a single discrete band and positive reaction with BT474 antigen in Western blot and Dot blot respectively. Flowcytometric analysis performed using various cancer cell lines revealed that this Monoclonal antibody exhibited high binding affinity with BT474 and SKBR3 cells whichoverexpresses C-erbB-2. By immunoperoxidase test, this antibody stained specifically the tumor cell membrane in frozen tissue sections of breast and ovarian tumors indicating overexpression of the C-erbB-2 product. All these results well correlated with those obtained using a control antibody ICR12, an anti-C-erbB-2 antibody. These studies clearly indicate that Monoclonal antibody CIBCgp185 might prove useful to identify tumors with over expression of C-erbB-2 which are often associated with poor prognosis and early recurrence.

Abstract
A 41-year-old man with atrial septal defect-Eisenmenger syndrome presented with progressively worsening breathlessness. The echocardiogram, computerized tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging of the thorax showed dilated pulmonary arteries and large thrombi in the right and left pulmonary arteries. Contrast-enhanced computerized tomographic scan was better than magnetic resonance imaging in picking up the thrombus. The possibility of in situ thrombus formation was considered more likely than thromboembolism, as there were none of the acute symptoms expected with the embolization of such large thrombi.

Abstract
Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is an oncofoetal protein first identified by Gold and Freedman (1965) in colorectal cancer. It is a cell surface tumor marker which has been characterised as a heterogenous group of glycoproteins. It is also present in a variety of benign and non-neoplastic diseases like ulcerative colitis, Adenomatous polyp, Liver cirrhosis and other cancers like GI tract tumors, Cancer of the breast, lung, ovary, pancreas, prostate, hepatoma etc. Elevated CEA levels serve as clinical tool in the diagnosis, monitoring, detecting early any recurrence or metastasis and in prognostication for confirmed colorectal cancers. In order to develop an Enzyme Immuno Assay and immunocytochemical assay for CEA, an MAb designated as CIBCHTB1 has been generated using CEA isolated from a cell line HT115, human adenocarcinoma of the colon, as immunogen by the conventional Hybridoma technology. This MAb of IgG1 isotope was selected by screening of culture supernatents by ELISA and then by its high binding affinity with HT115 cells as revealed by flowcytometric analysis. By ABC method of immunocytochemical assay, this Ab exhibited strong staining of cells in frozen tissue sections of normal colon and malignant colorectal lesions and various other types of human cancers. This MAb has useful application to study the expression of CEA in human cancers. Serum CEA levels of patients with colorectal cancers and other CEA producing cancers and controls determined by EIA using this MAb were in good correlation with the results obtained using commercial kit. The diagnostic potential of this Mab in the management of colorectal cancers is discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since 1971, 55 case-reports of rifampicin-induced acute renal failure (ARF) have been published. Covic et al described 60 consecutive cases of rifampicin-induced ARF during a period of eight years (1987-1995) from Iasi Dialysis Centre, Romania. The systenic data on this condition are not available, in view of the anecdotal nature of the observation from our country. OBJECTIVE The aims of study were to analyze clinical features, course and outcome of ARF complicating rifampicin therapy at our centre. METHODS We retrospectively studied prevalence, clinical presentations and renal histology and outcome of 11 cases (eight males, three females, aged 42-72 years) who were referred to Nephrology Unit of University Hospital, Varanasi for acute renal failure following retreatment with rifampicin between period of 1994-1999. RESULTS The gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting) and 'flu like' (fever, weakness and body ache) syndrome were the most frequent presenting features. The clinical signs of intravascular hemolysis were observed in four cases. The commonest laboratory findings included: Anaemia (7), leukocytosis (5), thrombocytopenia (3) and toxic hepatitis in (2) patients. Toxic hepatitis, hemolysis and ARF was seen in one patient in combination. The typical clinical features of allergic interstitial nephritis and acute tubular necrosis were seen in six and two patients respectively. Renal biopsy in three cases revealed; crescentic GN (1) and ATN in (2) patients. Acute renal failure complicating rifampicin accounted for 1.8% (11/607) of all ARF cases hospitalized in our centre during the study period. Renal function returned to normal in nine cases and one patient died on account of hepatic failure (toxic hepatitis). The patients with crescentic GN remained anuric and became dialysis dependent. Thus, clinical course of rifampicin induced ARF was favourable; with only one mortality, compared to a 18% mortality rate among all ARF patients. CONCLUSION Acute renal failure complicating rifampicin therapy is not an uncommon condition, and typically occurs after reintroduction of rifampicin. The renal prognosis is usually favourable. Intermittent or interrupted therapy appears to be a significant risk factor for the development of acute renal failure.

Abstract
Resolution of the racemic amino alcohol derivatives 1-6 is readily achieved to obtain enantiomerically enriched compounds using chiral 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol and boric acid in solvents such as CH(3)CN, THF, and MeOH. Purification of the diastereomeric mixture 7 has also been carried out following this method. The corresponding intermediate ammonium borate complexes were also characterized by X-ray diffraction methods.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Endometrial cancers often arise in a setting of estrogen stimulation unopposed by the differentiating effects of progesterone. Our laboratory and others have previously shown that progesterone receptor down-regulation or perturbation of progesterone receptor isoform A or B expression is associated with the development of poorly differentiated endometrial cancers that are not growth inhibited by progestins. The purpose of these studies was to reestablish high progesterone receptor isoform A and B gene expressions in such endometrial cancer cells and to examine the effects of progestin treatment on cell growth and metastatic potential after this transformation. STUDY DESIGN To induce high levels of expression of the progesterone receptor isoforms in KLE and Hec50 endometrial cancer cells, adenoviral vectors encoding the genes for progesterone receptor isoforms A and B were created. The characteristic ability of cancer cells to grow independently of anchorage to the surrounding solid matrix was measured by counting colony formation on soft agar for 8 to 14 days. Cell proliferation in response to a time course of progestin treatment was tested with flow cytometry. RESULTS After treatment with a control vector without a progesterone receptor--encoding insert, no effect of progestin treatment on cell proliferation was found; after treatment with vectors encoding progesterone receptor isoform A or B, however, progestin treatment resulted in significant inhibition of cell growth. The anchorage-independent cell growth on soft agar assay showed that by 8 to 14 days the number of cell colonies was reduced by 50% relative to control preparations in the presence of progesterone receptor isoform A plus progestin (P <.0001, both Hec50 and KLE cell lines) and by 90% in the presence of progesterone receptor isoform B plus progestin (P <.0001, both Hec50 and KLE cell lines). Progestin treatment also resulted in a time-dependent reduction in cell proliferation as measured by flow cytometry. Although transfection with both progesterone receptor isoforms A and B reduced cell proliferation according to our assays, progesterone receptor isoform B caused a much more dramatic decrease in cell growth (P =.001, Hec50 cells; P <.0001, KLE cells). CONCLUSION In poorly differentiated endometrial cancer cells that are resistant to progestin therapy, adenovirus-induced expressions of progesterone receptors A and B reestablish progestin control of endometrial cancer cell proliferation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A wide spectrum of non-diabetic renal diseases (NDRD) are reported to occur in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, the prevalence and nature of NDRD in type 2 diabetics is not widely documented in our country. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to analyse prevalence and spectrum of non-diabetic renal disease in type 2 diabetic patients. METHODS Two hundred sixty type 2 diabetic with clinical renal diseases were screened for evidence of NDRD, between April 1997 to March 1999. Renal disease other than diabetic nephropathy was found in 32 (12.3%) patients. Their (male 23; female 9) age ranged between 35-72 (mean 54.15+/-10.3) years. The duration of diabetes was < 5 years in 14 (43.7%), between 5-9 years in 8 (25%) and > 10 years in 10 (31.2%) patients. RESULTS The presenting clinical syndromes were : chronic renal failure 15 (47%), acute nephritic syndrome 6 (18.7%), nephrotic syndrome 5 (15.6%), acute renal failure 4 (12.5%) and rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN) in 2 (6.2%) cases. Overall, incidence of glomerular (46.8%) and tubulo-interstitial lesions (53.2%) were almost equal in type 2 diabetes patients. The spectrum of non-diabetic renal diseases includes : primary isolated glomerulopathy 12 (37.5%); mesangioproliferative GN superimposed on diabetic glomerulosclerosis (DGS) in 3 (9.3%); acute tubulo-interstitial nephropathy (TIN) 4 (12.5%); chronic TIN 10 (31.25%) and three patients had chronic pyelonephritis. Diabetic retinopathy was absent in 22 (69%) cases where 10 (31%) patients had background diabetic retinopathy. None of the patients with non-diabetic glomerular disease had diabetic retinopathy, except two who had DGS in addition to mesangioproliferative GN on renal biopsy. The background diabetic retinopathy was seen in 47% of patients with TIN without clinical evidence of diabetic nephropathy. The recovery of renal function or clinical improvement was observed in 47% of patients with NDRD with institution of appropriate treatment. CONCLUSION The prevalence of NDRD was 12.3% in our type 2 diabetic patients. Both non-diabetic glomerulopathy (47%) and tubulo-interstitial nephropathy (53%) can occur with nearly equal frequency in such patients. It is also gratifying to diagnose and treat NDRD in type 2 diabetics in selected cases.

Abstract
A study on the pattern of anemia and its relation to nutritional status and dietary habits was conducted among 3633 pre-school children of 108 selected anganwadi centers in rural areas of Kerala State during the period 1996 to 1998. Children were invited with their parent or guardian. Capillary blood was collected from each child and hemoglobin was estimated by cyanomethemoglobin method. Weight and height of children were taken for assessing their nutritional status. The information regarding their age, sex, clinical condition and dietary habits was collected in a performa through an interview. Chi-square test was used to assess the relationship of anemia to sex, dietary habits, and nutritional status. For multivariate analysis logistic regression model was employed. The prevalence of anemia was 11.4%. The percentage of anemic children among male and female children was 10.25 and 12.55 respectively and statistical analysis showed that female children were more susceptible to anemia. Normal nutritional status was seen among 46.7% of the children. When 187 (11.78%) of the mild undernourished children were anemic, the percentage anemic among the moderate undernourished children was 57 (16.37%). Moderate under nutrition and anemia showed a significant association. Anemia was reported among both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. Among 927 vegetarians, 86 (9.27%) were anemic and among 2,706 non-vegetarians, 328 (12.1%) were anemic. Dietary survey revealed that, consumption of iron sources, whether haem or non-haem, was below the recommended level. Undernutrition can be attributed as the major reason for nutritional anemia. Changes in eating behaviour could have potentially affected the iron bio-availability.

Abstract
Cancer and its link to reproductive hormones is an area of intense concern for our patients and has been the subject of much speculation. But if estrogen causes breast cancer, for example, most women would eventually develop the disease. We know this is not the case! Actually, estrogen and progesterone have been linked to a decrease as well as an increase in cancer, depending upon the type of tumor under investigation. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the data supporting those relationships.

Abstract
Influence of different physiological stages (young, mature and senescent) of Calotropis gigantea leaves on growth and reproductive ability of A. nerii and feeding, prey utilization, fecundity and lipid content of its predator M. sexmaculatus were investigated. Increased reproductive period, total life span and reproduction of nymphs per female of A. nerii were observed when reared on mature leaves. This relative preference of A. nerii and maximum utilization of mature leaves as compared to other physiological aged leaves are mainly due to changes in the chemical composition such as protein, carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid, nitrogen and phenolic of C. gigantea. Further, aphids reared on mature leaves influenced its predator's (M. sexmaculatus) growth, prey utilization and reproductive performances. Fecundity and longevity were high, while developmental time of predator was shorter on mature leaves fed aphid. Maximum prey utilization and increased efficiency of ingested and digested food of predator was observed on mature leaves reared aphid. The results are interpreted and discussed in relation to plant aphid and predator interaction (tritrophic).

Abstract
Some key advances occurred last year in understanding mechanisms involved in nutrient absorption. A novel "prechylomicron transport vesicle" was identified; its movement to the Golgi is the rate-limiting step for triacylglycerol absorption. A scavenger receptor (type BI) in the brush border membrane appears to facilitate cholesterol uptake. Several studies define mechanisms for gastrointestinal peptide hormone stimulation of glucose uptake. An oligopeptide transporter, PepT1, is transcriptionally upregulated by certain dietary amino acids and dipeptides. Surprisingly, both insulin and fasting double the maximum velocity for dipeptide uptake (via PepT1), but they act by different mechanisms. Three transporters, SMVT (sodium-dependent multivitamin transporter for biotin and pantothenate), SVCT (for vitamin C), and CaT1 (for Ca uptake from the lumen) have been cloned and are active when expressed in various cells. Additional studies provide insights on Ca absorption and vitamin D action in aging, estrogen deficiency, and adaptation to a low Ca diet. Nramp2, also called DMT1 (divalent metal ion transporter), seems to be a major regulator of transferrin-independent, nonheme iron uptake. Finally, the protein HFE associates with the transferrin receptor and is part of an iron-sensing mechanism that regulates iron absorption. It is defective in hereditary hemochromatosis. HFE and Nramp2 (DMT1) genes are reciprocally regulated.

Abstract
The dynamics of appearance of intracellular proteases in relation to the synthesis of crystal delta-endotoxin was studied to identify the native intracellular protease(s) involved in the proteolytic processing of the 73-kDa protoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis. In vitro proteolytic activation of the 73-kDa protoxin indicated the possible role of 69-kDa protease in the proteolytic processing of 73-kDa protoxin. The purified 69-kDa protease was able to cause the proteolytic activation of the 73-kDa protoxin to 68-kDa toxin and this conversion was inhibited by ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline.

Abstract
In mammals, Mannose 6-phosphate receptor proteins (MPR 300 and MPR46) mediate transport of lysosomal enzymes to lysosomes. Both receptors have been found in non-mammalian vertebrates including fish. To investigate the presence of MPRs in invertebrates, MPR 300 protein was isolated from the mollusc unio by affinity chromatography. It was shown to exhibit biochemical and immunological properties similar to mammalian MPR 300.

Experimental conditions needed to use human ileal mucosa for in vitro absorption studies are described. Intestinal mucosa contains leptin receptors, and leptin inhibits galactose absorption, suggesting a new site for leptin's modulation of body mass. The enhancer element for the apoB gene is located much farther from its structural gene in the intestine than in the liver.

Abstract
The intestine is able to regulate its output rate of chylomicrons, the major intestinal triacylglycerol (TG) transport vehicle. We have proposed that a vesicle, transporting the developing chylomicron from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi, is the rate-limiting step in the process of TG transit through the enterocyte [Am. J. Physiol. 273 (Gastrointest. Liver Physiol. 36): G18-G30, 1997]. We wished to isolate and characterize this vesicle. The apical portion of rat intestinal cells were avulsed, and the mucosa was stirred in buffer. The supernatant was centrifuged in two different sucrose gradients, and the top 2.5 ml of the last gradient were collected and concentrated. Electron microscopy showed a 200-nm vesicle. The vesicle contained immunoidentifiable apolipoprotein (apo) B48 and apo A-IV but very little apo A-I, although apo A-I was present in the ER and Golgi. [3H]TG-loaded vesicles delivered [3H]TG to the Golgi but not the ER. Marker enzyme assays also indicate that the isolated fraction is different from the ER and Golgi fractions. We conclude that we have isolated a vesicle that is post-ER but pre-Golgi that vectorially transports TG to the Golgi.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mometasone furoate is a potent glucocorticoid that can markedly inhibit proinflammatory Th2 cytokines in vitro. An aqueous nasal spray formulation has been shown to be clinically active in reducing the symptoms of perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis. OBJECTIVE To determine whether pretreatment with mometasone furoate 200 microg once daily decreases specific indices of early and late phase nasal inflammation compared with placebo. METHODS A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study was conducted using nasal provocation with ragweed antigen in 21 patients with ragweed-induced allergic rhinitis out of the ragweed season; the treatment period was 2 weeks. Symptom scores, rhinoprobe cytology, and nasal lavage fluid were collected during early and late phase periods for nasal cytokines (interleukin, 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8) and leukotriene B4 determinations using ELISA and RIA. RESULTS Mean nasal symptom scores and sneezing frequency were consistently lower with mometasone furoate compared with placebo. Treatment was associated with a statistically significant early phase (30-minute time point) reduction in nasal lavage histamine levels compared with placebo (14.3 versus 20.2 ng/mL, P = .02). Within-treatment comparisons suggested that mometasone furoate reduced the antigen-induced late-phase response for IL-6, IL-8, and eosinophils compared with pretreatment. There were similar, but smaller, changes seen in the placebo group for these measurements. There were no statistically significant changes following antigen challenge in IL-1, IL-4, IL-5, LTB4, or in other nasal cytology parameters. CONCLUSION These results suggest that the clinical activity of mometasone furoate nasal spray in seasonal allergic rhinitis is likely due, in part, to a reduction in the levels of histamine in nasal secretions related to the early phase response, and reductions in IL-6, IL-8, and eosinophils during the late phase response.

Abstract
The endogenous protease(s) activated crystal toxin from Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki was purified and examined. The purified toxin was homogenous, as demonstrated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and contained 1.38 mumoles neutral sugar and 9 nmoles sialic acid per mg protein amino terminal amino acid sequence data revealed that the toxin is a cleavage product of 132 kDa protoxin with glutamic acid-30 of the deduced amino acid sequence of the crystal protein (Schnepf, H.E., Wong, H.C. and Whiteley, H.R. (1985) J. Biol. Chem. 260: 6264-6272) at the amino terminus.

Abstract
The uterine endometrium responds to unopposed estrogen stimulation with rapid cell proliferation. Progesterone protects the endometrium against the hyperplastic effects of estradiol (E2) through progesterone receptors (PRs), of which two isoforms are expressed: human (h) PRA and PRB. hPRB has a longer NH2 terminus and may function differently from hPRA. Thus, the relative expression of hPRA:hPRB is likely to be important for the action of progesterone. We hypothesized that the hPRA:hPRB ratios may be abnormal in endometrial cancer, leading to a lack of normal progesterone protection against the growth-promoting effects of E2. To test this hypothesis, well-differentiated Ishikawa endometrial cancer cells were compared to poorly differentiated Hec50 and KLE cells. Reverse transcription-PCR was chosen as a sensitive method to detect transcripts for the two forms of PR. The relative expression of PR isoforms under hormonal stimulation was determined by Western blotting. Transient transfections of hPRA and hPRB into endometrial cells allowed the evaluation of the transcriptional activity of each isoform independently on reporter gene transcription under the control of a simple progesterone response element-containing promoter. The effect of coexpressing the estrogen receptor on PR expression was also studied. Ishikawa cells (well-differentiated) express both hPRA and hPRB. Both isoforms, but predominantly hPRB, are up-regulated by E2 and not by tamoxifen or the pure antiestrogen ICI 182,780. Hec50 and KLE cells (poorly differentiated) express only hPRA. No hPRB is present in the poorly differentiated cells, and it is not induced by estrogen receptor expression and/or estrogen treatment. In all cells, hPRB expression, whether endogenous or produced as a result of transfection, acts as a stronger transcription factor than hPRA on a simple progesterone-dependent promoter. We speculate that down-regulation of hPRB may predict for poorly differentiated endometrial cancers that do not respond to progestin therapy.

Abstract
The anti-lepidopteran toxin from sporulated Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki cells, generated by the proteolytic action of endogenous protease(s) on the protoxin, was purified and studied to identify the effect of such proteolysis on the biochemical nature of the toxin. The active toxin was purified employing anion-exchange chromatography to absolute homogeneity, as indicated by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. Antisera to the purified toxin (66 kDa) crossreacted with the protoxin (132 kDa) confirming its origin from protoxin. The purified toxin with a pI of 7.95 was derived from the N-terminal region of the protoxin (pI 7.6). Circular dichroism data revealed that the toxin has significant secondary structure and it undergoes pH dependent conformational change. Unlike the toxin generated by exogenous proteases such as trypsin, etc., the endogenous protease(s) activated toxin is highly lethal to a tolerant insect variety of the lepidopteran order, Spodoptera littoralis.

Abstract
Insecticidal crystal proteins harvested from sporulated cultures of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki contain the protoxin (Mr 132 kDa) and minor amounts of toxin (66 kDa). The proteolytic processing of 132 kDa protoxin to an active 66 kDa toxin is brought about by exogenous proteases or larval gut enzymes. Under denaturing/reducing conditions this conversion is also mediated by endogenous protease(s) of the producer organism. This endogenous protease is identified as a metalloprotease as the activation process is inhibited by ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid at 2 mM concentration.

Abstract
The ability of the intestinal cell to export triacylglycerol (TG) is a physiologically regulatable function. The intracellular site where this occurs is unknown, although available evidence suggests that the step between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and the Golgi is the most likely. We studied this process in rat enterocytes that were isolated from the proximal intestine. A novel system was developed in which [3H]TG was transported from ER to the Golgi. This process was time, ATP, temperature, and cytosol dependent. The cytosolic factor(s) was heat and trypsin sensitive. TG transport was directly proportional to the amount of added nonradiolabeled acceptor Golgi. The rate of TG transported to the Golgi was the fastest in cells isolated from rats that had been intraduodenally infused in vivo with glyceryltrioleate (TO) plus phosphatidylcholine and slowest in cells isolated from bile-fistulated rats infused with TO in vivo compared with cells from in vivo TO-infused, bile duct intact rats, mimicking the relative transport rates seen in vivo. TG transport in vitro could not be quenched by adding TG emulsions, chylomicrons, liposomes, or guanosine 5'-O-(3-thiotriphosphate). Cytosol from the liver and kidney supported TG transport, but the Golgi from liver or kidney did not accept TG from intestinal ER. We conclude that an intestinally specific, active transport mechanism transports TG from the ER to the Golgi and that this might be a regulatory step in TG export from the intestinal cell.

Abstract
Oxidative decarboxylation of peracetylated welan gum (S-130) with lead tetraacetate resulted in selective cleavage of the glucuronosidic linkages. Products of the degradation were reduced with sodium borohydride, O-deacetylated, and fractionated. Polymeric and oligomeric fractions were separated and analysed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, and were found to be monomers, dimers, and trimers of the repeating unit. Results show that this method may be used to liberate alditol-terminated multiples of the repeating unit of peracetylated glycuronans by cleavage and degradation of the uronic acid residues. The reaction sequence also confirms the recent finding that welan gum contains repeating units with randomly distributed terminal groups.

In the present study, phenotype and gene frequency distributions of placental alkaline phosphatase (PLAP) of two caste groups namely, Lambada and Perika of Andhra Pradesh, South India, are reported. All the common phenotypes and the single case of a rare phenotype have been observed in the Lambada group.

Abstract
Nasal provocation (NP) in allergic rhinitis patients can elicit a late phase inflammatory response in which interleukins (IL), leukotrienes (LT), and neutrophils have been implicated. Certain antihistamines have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. The objective was to determine whether astemizole at 10 mgs/day has any anti-inflammatory characteristics. We clinically evaluated 20 patients with allergic rhinitis and measured nasal IL-8 and LTB4 during NP with increasing doses of grass and ragweed antigen in a double-blind placebo-controlled fashion after a 4-week course of treatment. Clinical symptom scores for sneezing, pruritus, and rhinorrhea were evaluated. Nasal fluid was examined by ELISA and RIA for IL-8 and LTB4 levels along with neutrophil assessment before NP and at 3, 6, and 8 hours. Symptom scores for nasal sneezing, pruritus, rhinorrhea, and nasal LTB4 levels at 6 and 8 hours and IL-8 at 3, 6, and 8 hours were generally lower in astemizole-treated patients compared to those on placebo. Nasal IL-8 levels corresponded to LTB4 levels at diluent and at 6 hours in the placebo group (P = 0.01). The percentage of neutrophils correlated with LTB4 levels at baseline, coefficient = 0.76, P = 0.02 and at 6 hours, coefficient = 0.62, P = 0.035 in the placebo group. This study is the first to demonstrate an effect of astemizole during NP on IL-8 and LTB4 levels with a significant correlation of neutrophil numbers in untreated patients during the nasal late phase response.

Abstract
An affinity matrix (Sepharose 6B-divinyl sulfone-pentaphosphomannan) has been developed which can be efficiently used for the purification of the MPR 215 from different tissues of rat as well as from goat liver. The matrix developed is relatively easy to prepare compared with the available procedures, and can be used for the purification of similar receptor proteins from other sources.

Abstract
A study on the anthropometric indices of 3835 singleton newborn babies was conducted over a four months period at Sree Avittom Thirunal Hospital, Trivandrum. Of these, 1921 (50.1%) were male babies and 1914 (49.9%) were female babies. The majority of infants (43%) were born to the middle socio-economic groups and the mean birth weight of babies was high among the high-income groups. Five hundred and ninety six (15.5%) babies weighed less than 2500 g; of these 121 (20.2%) were preterm and 477 (79.8%) were full term. The prevalence of low birth weight (LBW) was high (22.0%) among the mothers aged between 15 and 19 years. There was a significant difference (p < 0.001) in the mean birth weight (BW) of term male and female babies but there was no significant differences in their body length, head circumference and cord length. The mean ponderal index of term newborn babies was 2.3 g/cm3. The mean placental weight of LBW term and preterm babies was less than that of the corresponding normal weight babies. The birth weight of babies was directly proportional to their placental weight.

Abstract
A study on twin births was conducted from May 1993 to April 1994 at S.A.T. Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. The twinning rate in this period was found as 17.33 per 1000 births. 79.6% babies in the twin pairs were of like sex and 20.4% were of unlike sex. The incidence of low birth weight twin babies in this study was 68.9%. There was no significant difference in the physical parameters (birth weight, body length and head circumference) of twin babies in relation to sex. The incidence of twin birth was higher among primipara mothers and in the mothers of age group 21 to 25 years. The first born baby (twin A) was found to be heavier than the second born baby (twin B) in 44.78% twin pairs and their mean birth weight difference was 438 g, while the second born baby (twin B) was found to be heavier than the first born (twin A) in 38.31% twin pairs and their mean birth weight difference was 291 g. Statistical analysis showed that the difference between the mean birth weight difference in the case of twin A > B was significantly greater when compared to that of twin A < B.

Abstract
The influence of glucose-, sucrose- and starch-containing diets on the synthesis and secretion of lipoprotein in the density range of very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDLs) and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) was studied via primary cultures of rat hepatocytes. Apolipoprotein B secreted by hepatocytes from rats fed a sucrose diet was significantly more than in rats fed starch or glucose. This was further confirmed by pulse labeling with [3H]leucine and chase study. Increased synthesis and secretion of cholesterol in lipoproteins of the VLDL and LDL density range and decreased synthesis and secretion of triglyceride in the VLDL fraction were observed in hepatocytes from sucrose-fed animals compared with those fed glucose. This indicates that the VLDL secreted by hepatocytes from sucrose-fed animals was richer in cholesterol but poorer in triglycerides than from glucose/starch- and glucose-fed animals. These findings also suggest an increase in the synthesis and secretion of apolipoprotein B by hepatocytes on sucrose feeding, indicating an association with an increase in cholesterogenesis.

Abstract
Synthesis and secretion of VLDL and LDL by primary cultures of rat hepatocytes maintained in serum free medium have been studied. A time-dependent increase found in the [3H]leucine labelled lipoproteins which floated at a density of 1.006 g/ml indicate the secretion of VLDL into the medium. That the hepatocytes also secrete. LDL is shown by floatation of [3H]leucine labelled lipoproteins by sequential centrifugation at a density range of 1.006-1.06 g/ml. Electrophoretic and immunoprecipitation analysis show that about 60% and 65% respectively of 3H-radioactivity is associated with apoB in the two fraction of lipoproteins. At about 12hr 70-75% lipoproteins in the culture medium is in the VLDL density range and 25-30% is in the LDL density range. Conversion of secreted VLDL to LDL has also been shown by incubating hepatocytes with pre-labelled lipoproteins when there is a decrease in the fraction of VLDL range with a corresponding increase in the fraction of the LDL density range. Addition of glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulphate, and heparin into the medium cause significant increase in the synthesis and secretion of [3H]apoB into the medium indicating a possible secretory control of apoB by local reuptake.

Abstract
The effect of experimentally induced atherosclerosis on the synthesis and secretion of lipoproteins in the density range of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) have been studied using primary cultures of rat hepatocytes. Rats fed atherogenic diet showed higher levels of lipids associated with serum VLDL and LDL fraction, aorta and liver when compared with animals fed normal diet. Incorporation of [3H]leucine into apo B associated with the cell layer and secreted by hepatocytes from rats fed atherogenic diet was significantly more when compared with normal hepatocytes. [14C]Acetate incorporation studies showed that the synthesis of cholesterol was lower in hepatocytes from atherogenic diet fed rats, but more of the newly synthesised cholesterol was found in the secreted VLDL; secretion of lipids, particularly triglycerides, unesterified cholesterol and cholesterol in the lipoproteins in the density range of VLDL and LDL was significantly more in these hepatocytes. The relative distribution of [3H]-radioactivity in the LDL density range was 57% in hepatocytes from atherogenic diet fed animals as compared with 28% in controls, suggesting a relatively higher production of lipoproteins in the LDL density range than VLDL by these cells. These results indicate that the hypercholesterolemia in atherogenic diet fed animals may among other factors be caused by increased synthesis of apo B by liver cells and resultant increase in the secretion of apo B containing lipoproteins.

Abstract
The synthesis and secretion of apoB, the major protein component of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL), were studied using rat hepatocytes maintained in primary culture. Supplementation of hepatocytes with rat serum VLDL and LDL increased the production of apoB while delipidated lipoproteins had no significant effect, suggesting a role for lipids in the production of apoB. Addition of cholesterol to the culture medium also increased the production of apoB in a concentration-dependent manner. Pulse labelling followed by chase in presence of cholesterol indicated enhancement in apoB secretion. Mevinolin which inhibits cholesterol synthesis significantly reduced the secretion of apoB. The presence of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine in the culture medium also increased the secretion of apoB into the medium. These data suggest that availability of lipids, particularly cholesterol, is an important determinant of apoB synthesis and secretion as VLDL.

Abstract
A cage implantation technique has been adopted in a rabbit animal model to investigate the biocompatibility of an aliphatic crosslinked polyurethane based on hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). In this study, four cages are represented; the cage containing the candidate polyurethane material, biomedical grade polyurethane (Tecoflex), the commercial grade polyvinylchloride (PVC), and an empty cage which were implanted subcutaneously in rabbits. Exudates were aspirated from these cages at 4, 7, 14, and 21 days postimplantation. Exudates were analyzed for variations in proteins, cell counts, and extracellular enzymes. Results with the four types of cage implants showed that the candidate polyurethane caused an inflammatory response comparable to that caused by medical-grade Tecoflex and the empty cage control.

Abstract
Estrogen deficiency, whether surgically induced or as a consequence of natural ovarian failure, has destructive effects on many organ systems. With current levels of life expectancy, untreated women may expect to spend a third of their lifetime in this state. Appropriate estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) can avert (if started promptly) or ameliorate these devastating consequences, some of which (osteoporotic fractures, increased cardiovascular morbidity) can be lethal. Nevertheless, from 10 to 20% of postmenopausal women may have significant contraindications to ERT. Treatment of symptoms and improving the quality of life is imperative, yet many physicians abjure intervention, for reasons which are not entirely clear. Recent studies of conventional intervention with sedatives or tranquilisers show results equivalent to placebo therapy. On the other hand, specific agents with demonstrated effectiveness are available for management of the major estrogen-deficiency effects, although none of them are truly adequate replacement for the effect of estrogen itself.

Abstract
A water-soluble arabinoxylan (D-xylose and L-arabinose in the molar ratio 1.0:3.4) was isolated from the mucilaginous bark of Litsea glutinosa (Lauraceae). The results of methylation analysis, partial hydrolysis, and 1H- and 13C-n.m.r. spectroscopy indicated a backbone of (1----4)-linked beta-D-xylopranosyl residues substituted at both positions 2 and 3 with side chains composed of either single or (1----3)-linked arabinofuranosyl residues. Both alpha-L- and beta-L-arabinofuranosyl residues were present. It is possible that side chains composed of two beta-L-arabinofuranosyl residues are attached mainly at O-2 of some xylosyl residues.

Abstract
Groups of lactating BALB/c mice were immunized in the immediate postpartum period with high doses of mAb (Ab-1) to the F-glycoprotein (F-gp) of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This antibody possessed neutralizing activity against the whole virus. The immune response to F-gp was studied in the breast feeding infant mice of such mothers at regular intervals before and after weaning. All infant mice exhibited anti-F-gp activity in serum, which was detected until 6 wk of age. Splenic cells of such breast feeding infant mice collected after weaning exhibited in vitro synthesis of antibody against Ab-1, the antibody previously used for maternal immunization. Subsequent immunization with homologous purified RSV F-gp resulted in a booster response for IgG, IgM, and plaque-neutralizing antibody to the immunizing RSV protein and to the whole virus in the infants primed via breast feeding. The enhanced antibody response was specific for the antigenic epitopes of the virus protein recognized by the monoclonal antibody used for maternal immunization. Similar booster effect was seen in control infants of nonimmunized mothers who were immunized with a polyclonal Ab-2 prepared by repeated immunization with Ab-1 in DBA/2 mice. These data demonstrate induction of RSV-specific anti-idiotype antibody in the neonates via the process of breast feeding, secondary to maternal immunization after the delivery of the neonate. Use of idiotypic vaccines in the mother and the transfer of RSV-specific idiotypes may offer an alternate approach to the development of effective immunoprophylaxis for RSV infection in early infancy.

Abstract
Groups of lactating BALB/c mice were immunized in the immediate postpartum period with high doses of mAb (Ab-1) to the F-glycoprotein (F-gp) of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This antibody possessed neutralizing activity against the whole virus. The immune response to F-gp was studied in the breast feeding infant mice of such mothers at regular intervals before and after weaning. All infant mice exhibited anti-F-gp activity in serum, which was detected until 6 wk of age. Splenic cells of such breast feeding infant mice collected after weaning exhibited in vitro synthesis of antibody against Ab-1, the antibody previously used for maternal immunization. Subsequent immunization with homologous purified RSV F-gp resulted in a booster response for IgG, IgM, and plaque-neutralizing antibody to the immunizing RSV protein and to the whole virus in the infants primed via breast feeding. The enhanced antibody response was specific for the antigenic epitopes of the virus protein recognized by the monoclonal antibody used for maternal immunization. Similar booster effect was seen in control infants of nonimmunized mothers who were immunized with a polyclonal Ab-2 prepared by repeated immunization with Ab-1 in DBA/2 mice. These data demonstrate induction of RSV-specific anti-idiotype antibody in the neonates via the process of breast feeding, secondary to maternal immunization after the delivery of the neonate. Use of idiotypic vaccines in the mother and the transfer of RSV-specific idiotypes may offer an alternate approach to the development of effective immunoprophylaxis for RSV infection in early infancy.

Abstract
The structure of the capsular polysaccharide (S18A) elaborated by Streptococcus pneumoniae type 18A has been investigated by using methylation analysis and n.m.r. spectroscopy. It is concluded that the polysaccharide is composed of pentasaccharide repeating-units having the following structure. (formula; see text) In this structure, the absolute configuration of the glycerol 1-phosphate moiety has not been determined but is assumed to be D from biosynthesis considerations. The structure of S18A is, as expected, closely similar to those determined for S18F and S18C.

Abstract
The structure of the extracellular polysaccharide elaborated by Pseudomonas ATCC 31554 has been investigated, methylation analyses, specific degradations, and 1H-n.m.r. spectroscopy being the main methods used. It is concluded that the polysaccharide is composed of pentasaccharide repeating-units with the structure: ----3)-beta-D-Glcp-(1----4)-beta-D-GlcpA-(1----4)-beta-D-Glcp- (1----4)-alpha-L-[Rha or Man]-(1---- 3 increases 1 alpha-L-Rha. An unusual feature is that a sugar residue in the chain may be either L-rhamnose or L-mannose. The polysaccharide also contains O-acetyl groups (approximately 5%) which have not been located.
