Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recent studies have documented the cardiovascular consequences of acute coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), although one of the early cardiac markers that can be used for diagnosis, the heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP), has not been covered. Through the evaluation of H-FABP levels, we aim to contribute to the early diagnosis and treatment of cardiac problems in COVID-19 infection patients. METHODOLOGY Seventy-five patients who were admitted to the emergency department of Mehmet Akif Ersoy Hospital with a complaint of chest pain in the last 6 hours and whose corona PCR tests were positive, were included in our study as the case group and 60 healthy volunteers as the control group. The routine cardiac markers such as creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) cardiac troponin T (cTnT), and H-FABP levels were analyzed by routine laboratory methods. RESULTS The mean age and gender distributions of the groups did not differ statistically (p > 0.05). CK-MB, cTnT, and H-FABP measurements were statistically different between the groups (p = 0.001; p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The relationship between AMI and COVID-19 with routine cardiac markers is already supported by recent studies. We also evaluated H-FABP levels in our study, as it affects the prognosis of the disease independent of the chronic disease history. At the same time, we showed that H-FABP levels increase earlier than routine cardiac markers, so it will be useful for COVID-19 patients with cardiac complaints.

Abstract
Introduction Bisphenol A (BPA), a ubiquitous synthetic monomer primarily used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins and as a non-polymer additive to other plastics, can leach into the food and water supply and has been linked to cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to analyze BPA levels in patients with varying numbers of coronary artery stenosis and evaluate the prognostic value of new biomarkers cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36) and heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP), compared to troponin I and creatine kinase (CK) MB, for detecting myocardial injury. Method Eighty nine patients undergoing angiography at Urmia Hospital from March 2019 to 2020 were included. Serum levels of BPA, CD36, H-FABP, troponin I, and CK-M were measured. Results When comparing CD36 and H-FABP with troponin I and CK-MB across coronary occlusion classes, receiver operating characteristic curves indicated CD36 and H-FABP had higher accuracy than troponin I and CK-MB for detecting stenosis stages. In patients with occlusion, significant alterations were detected in age, sex, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and smoking. BPA serum concentration significantly increased compared to normal subjects. Conclusions Our study revealed that serum biomarkers were valuable for prognosticating myocardial injury. Among these, CD36 and H-FABP were more accurate. BPA concentration correlated with myocardial necrosis, underlying disease, and occlusion stage, suggesting BPA's harmful effects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Increasingly, SGLT2 inhibitors save patients with heart failure and comorbidities such as type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD); the inhibition of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) was first studied in patients with diabetes as a solution to lower glucose levels by preventing glucose reabsorption and facilitating its elimination; in the process, researchers took notice of how SGLT2 inhibitors also seemed to have beneficial cardiovascular effects in patients with both diabetes and cardiovascular disease. AIM Our single-center prospective study assesses outcomes of post-coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) rehabilitation and SLGT2 inhibition in CABG patients with/without T2DM and with/without CKD. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred twenty consecutive patients undergoing CABG were included in the analysis. Patients were divided into four subgroups: diabetes patients with chronic kidney disease (T2DM + CKD), diabetes patients without chronic kidney disease (T2DM-CKD), prediabetes patients with chronic kidney disease (PreD+CKD), and prediabetes patients without chronic kidney disease (PreD-CKD). Echocardiographic and laboratory investigations post-surgery (phase I) and 6 months later (phase II) included markers for cardiac ischemia, glycemic status, and renal function, and metabolic equivalents were investigated. RESULTS One hundred twenty patients participated, mostly men, overweight/obese, hypertensive, smokers; 65 had T2DM (18 with CKD), and 55 were prediabetic (17 with CKD). The mean ejection fraction increased by 8.43% overall but significantly more in the prediabetes group compared to the T2DM group (10.14% vs. 6.98%, p < 0.05). Overall, mean heart-type fatty-acid-binding protein (H-FABP) levels returned to normal levels, dropping from 68.40 ng/mL to 4.82 ng/mL (p = 0.000), and troponin data were more nuanced relative to an overall, strongly significant decrease of 44,458 ng/L (p = 0.000). Troponin levels in patients with CKD dropped more, both in the presence of T2DM (by 82,500 ng/L, p = 0.000) and in patients without T2DM (by 73,294 ng/L, p = 0.047). As expected, the overall glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels improved significantly in those with prediabetes (from 6.54% to 5.55%, p = 0.000); on the other hand, the mean HbA1c changed from 7.06% to 6.06% (p = 0.000) in T2DM, and the presence or absence of CKD did not seem to make any difference: T2DM+CKD 7.01-6.08% (p = 0.000), T2DM-CKD 7.08-6.04% (p = 0.000), PreD+CKD 5.66-4.98% (p = 0.014), and PreD-CKD 6.03-4.94% (p = 0.00). Compared to an overall gain of 11.51, the GFRs of patients with CKD improved by 18.93 (68.15-87.07%, p = 0.000) in the presence of established diabetes and 14.89 (64.75-79.64%, p = 0.000) in the prediabetes group. CONCLUSIONS Regarding the patients' cardiac statuses, the results from our single-center analysis revealed a significant decrease in ischemic risk (H-FABP and hs-cTnI levels) with improvements in mean ejection fraction, glycemic status, and renal function in patients post-CABG with/without T2DM, with/without CKD, and with SGLT2 inhibitor dapagliflozin treatment while undergoing cardiac rehabilitation.

Abstract
Advanced bioelectronic detection based on the integration of modern optical electronics and biological systems has a broad prospect. The strategy of cathode signal amplification in self-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensors with excellent performance is rarely reported in the field of immune analysis. Herein, the work demonstrates a self-powered PEC biosensor formed with BiOI photocathode and WO3/SnS2/ZnS photoanode, and CsPbBr3@COF-V was used as the photocathode signal quenching source for the quantitative monitoring of heart fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP). The high efficiency and stable self-powered biosensor formed not only provides continuous and powerful photocurrent response for bioanalysis through reasonable stepped band structure, but also effectively eliminates the interference of reducing substances. The quenching source CsPbBr3@COF-V greatly affects the photocurrent response due to steric hindrance, weak conductivity, competition with the substrate for dissolved oxygen and excitation light source. And the intervention of this key factor achieves multiple signal amplification effect and opens up an innovative vision for self-powered PEC immunosensor. Taking H-FABP as a representative analyte, the proposed signal amplification self-powered photoelectrochemical presents a broad linear range from 0.0005 to 150 ng/mL with the detection limit of 0.19 pg/mL.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the value of cardiac troponin(cTn), myoglobin(Myo) combined with heart-type fatty acid-binding protein(H-FABP) detection in the diagnosis of early acute myocardial infarction(AMI). Methods This study was a clinical comparative study. Eighty patients with AMI hospitalized in Tangshan Workers' Hospital were selected as study group, and another 80 individuals receiving normal physical examination were selected as control group from September 20, 2021 to September 20, 2022. The concentrations of cTn, Myo and H-FABPP, diagnostic indicators, the sensitivity and specificity of combined diagnosis, as well as the diagnostic efficacy for AMI were compared between the two groups. Results The levels of cTn, Myo and H-FABPP in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group(P= 0.00). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that cTn, Myo and H-FABP were all relevant indicators for AMI. H-FABP alone has better diagnostic efficacy for AMI. The area under the curve of their combined detection, the specificity, and the sensitivity were higher than those of cTn, Myo and H-FABP alone, indicating that their combined application has the best diagnostic efficiency. cTn, Myo and H-FABP levels were positively correlated with Glu, TC, LDL-C and hs-CRP levels(P< 0.01), while negatively correlated with HDL level(P< 0.01). Conclusions The combined detection of cardiac markers such as cTn, Myo and H-FABP presents higher sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of AMI compared with any single detection, and can provide better data support for the definite diagnosis of AMI, with high clinical application value.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate heart-fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) leakage from cardiomyocytes as a quantitative measure of cell membrane damage and to test healing by Resolvin E1 (RVE1) as a potential therapeutic for patients with inflammatory diseases (cardiovascular disease and comorbidities) with high morbidity and mortality. Our quantitative ELISA assays demonstrated H-FABP as a sensitive and reliable biomarker for measuring cardiomyocyte damage induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and healing by RvE1, a specialized pro-resolving mediator (SPM) derived from the Omega-3 fatty acid, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a dietary nutrient that balances inflammation to restore homeostasis. RvE1 reduced leakage of H-FABP by up to 86%, which supports our hypothesis that inflammation as a mechanism of injury can be targeted for therapy. H-FABP as a blood biomarker was tested in 40 patients admitted to Boston Medical Center for respiratory distress, (20 patients with and 20 patients without COVID infection). High levels of H-FABP correlated with clinically diagnosed CVD, diabetes, and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in both patient groups. The level of H-FABP indicates not only CVD damage but is a valuable measure for patients with increased inflammation disease comorbidities.

Abstract
A sensitive electrochemical immunosensor for the detection of the heart-type fatty acid binding protein (HFABP), an earlier biomarker for acute myocardial infarction than Troponins, is described. The sensing platform was enhanced with methylene blue (MB) redox coupled to carbon nanotubes (CNT) assembled on a polymer film of polythionine (PTh). For this strategy, monomers of thionine rich in amine groups were electrosynthesized by cyclic voltammetry on the immunosensor's gold surface, forming an electroactive film with excellent electron transfer capacity. Stepwise sensor surface preparation was electrochemically characterized at each step and scanning electronic microscopy was carried out showing all the preparation steps. The assembled sensor platform combines MB and PTh in a synergism, allowing sensitive detection of the H-FABP in a linear response from 3.0 to 25.0 ng∙mL-1 with a limit of detection of 1.47 ng∙mL-1 HFABP that is similar to the clinical level range for diagnostics. H-FABP is a newer powerful biomarker for distinguishing between unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction.

Increased vulnerability to physiologic stressors, termed frailty, is a common occurrence in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). However, the definite biomarkers to assess frailty in CHF patients are not known. Here, we assessed the frailty phenotype and its potential association with heart failure (HF) markers in CHF patients. We categorized controls (n = 59) and CHF patients (n = 80), the participants, into robust, pre-frail, and frail based on the cardiovascular health study (CHS) frailty index. The plasma levels of HF markers, including tumorigenicity 2 (s-ST2), galectin-3, and heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP), were measured and correlated with frailty phenotype and cardiac function. The levels of plasma s-ST2, galectin-3, and H-FABP were profoundly elevated in CHF patients. Conversely, the frailty index scores were significantly lower in ischemic and non-ischemic CHF patients versus controls. Of the assessed HF markers, only H-FABP was positively correlated (r2 = 0.07, P = 0.02) with the frailty score in CHF patients. Collectively, these observations suggest that circulating H-FABP may serve as a biomarker of frailty in CHF patients.

Abstract
Heart failure (HF) is often associated with compromised physical capacity in patients. However, it is unclear if established HF markers correlate with the physical performance of patients with congestive HF (CHF). We assessed the left ventricular end-systolic dimension (LVESD) and ejection fraction (LVEF) and, physical performance parameters, including short physical performance battery (SPPB), gait speed (GS), and handgrip strength (HGS) in 80 patients with CHF along with 59 healthy controls. Furthermore, levels of plasma HF markers galectin-3 and heart-specific fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) were measured in relation to the severity of HF and physical performance. Irrespective of etiology, significantly greater LVESD and lower LVEF were observed in HF patients versus controls. As expected, the levels of HF markers galectin-3 and H-FABP were upregulated in the CHF patients which were accompanied by significantly elevated levels of plasma zonulin and inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP). The SPPB scores, GS, and HGS were significantly lower in the ischemic and non-ischemic HF patients than controls. The level of galectin-3 was inversely correlated with SPPB scores (r2 = 0.089, P = 0.01) and HGS (r2 = 0.078, P = 0.01). Similarly, H-FABP levels were also inversely correlated with SPPB scores (r2 = 0.06, P = 0.03) and HGS (r2 = 0.109, P = 0.004) in the patients with CHF. Taken together, CHF adversely affects physical performance, and galectin-3 and H-FABP may serve as biomarkers of physical disability in patients with CHF. The robust correlations of galectin-3 and H-FABP with the physical performance parameters and CRP in CHF patients suggest that the poor physical performance may partly be caused due to systemic inflammation.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the cardiotoxic effect of the combination of tilmicosin and diclofenac sodium in sheep. Thirty-two sheep were used and were randomly divided into four equal groups as tilmicosin (T), diclofenac sodium (D), tilmicosin+diclofenac sodium (TD) and control (C) group. Group T received a single dose of tilmicosin, Group D was administered diclofenac sodium once a day for 3 days, and group TD was administered diclofenac and tilmicosin at the same doses as group T and D. Group C received NaCl in a similar way. The blood samples were taken before dosing and at 4th, 8th, 24th and 72nd hour post-dosing for measurement of cardiac markers such as H-FABP, cTn-I, CK-MB. H-FABP level of group TD was found to be significantly (p⟨0.05) higher than of group C at the 8th, 24th and 72nd hour and group D and T at the 72nd hour. cTn-I and CK-MB levels of group TD were found significantly (p⟨0.05) higher compared with other groups. In conclusion, the combined use of tilmicosin and diclofenac in sheep causes an increase in cardiac biomarkers and it can be stated that this combination of drugs may cause cardiac damage.

Abstract
It is difficult to determine the cause of death in electric shock injuries when no trace can be determined on the skin, and this is accepted as a reason for negative autopsy. We aimed to determine useful parameters in the definition of the cause of deaths associated with electric shock and particularly those formed with water conduction. This study used a total of 42 rats, applied with fatal electric shock formed of isolated electric shock at 220 V and with water conduction. The serum NT-ProBNP and H-FABP levels were examined together with histopathological changes in the brain, cerebellum, brainstem, heart, liver and skin and the Bax, caspase-3 and HSP-60 antibody status in these tissues. A statistically significant difference was determined between the groups in respect of the serum H-FABP values and the immunohistochemical staining of the samples taken from the organs. In conclusion, this study is the first in literature with an experimental model of electric shock with water conduction. Using immunohistochemical and biochemical markers in deaths associated with isolated electric shock and electric shock with water conduction, the results of this study can contribute to the clarification of one of the reasons for negative autopsy in forensic medicine.

Abstract
Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) represents the most frequent form of inflammatory arthritis affecting approximately 1% of the population worldwide. Introduction of novel therapeutic strategies targeting proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and interleukin-6) revolutionized the treatment of RA. This kind of treatment, although effective in a substantial portion of patients, may potentially cause many side effects. Among them cardiovascular safety is one of the main concerns. Objectives In the present study, we investigated what impact treatment with anti-TNF-α and anti-IL-6 agents may have on heart function and levels of heart function biomarkers Methods To measure this, we used cardiac function biomarkers such as NT-pro Brain Natriuretic Peptide, mid regional pro Atrial Natriuretic Peptide, Galectin-3 and Heart-Type Fatty Acid-Binding Protein and compared them to patients treated with methotrexate as well as healthy controls. Results Patients treated with biologics were characterized by low disease activity or were in remission. The disease activity in these groups were significantly lower in comparison to the methotrexate group. All patient recruited to the study were characterized by normal heart function measured with the use of echocardiography (EF>50%). With the exception of MR-proANP between tocilizumab and adalimumab (median: 1.01 vs 0.49 nmol/L, p < 0.05), we failed to observe any significant differences in biomarkers levels between groups treated with biologics. Contrary to this, patients on MTX showed higher NT-proBNP levels compared to adalimumab, and healthy controls (p < 0.05 for both). Striking differences have been shown in regard to H-FABP. The levels of these biomarkers were elevated in all biologics and the methotrexate group as compared to healthy controls. Conclusion As this biomarker reflects potential heart injury we suggest that heart damage proceeds in continuous manner in RA patients despite effective treatment and attainment of remission/low disease activity. This finding however should be verify in larger cohort of RA patients to ascertain if routine assessment of H-FABP may be useful for detection of patients with RA who are at risk of development of heart damage.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Currently there are no biomarkers that are predictive of when patients with type-2 diabetes (T2D) will progress to more serious kidney disease i.e., diabetic nephropathy (DN). Biomarkers that could identify patients at risk of progression would allow earlier, more aggressive treatment intervention and management, reducing patient morbidity and mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS Study participants (N=88; control n=26; T2D n=32; DN n=30) were recruited from the renal unit at Antrim Area Hospital, Antrim, UK; Whiteabbey Hospital Diabetic Clinic, Newtownabbey, UK; Ulster University (UU), Belfast, UK; and the University of the Third Age (U3A), Belfast, UK; between 2019 and 2020. Venous blood and urine were collected with a detailed clinical history for each study participant. RESULTS In total, 13/25 (52.0%) biomarkers measured in urine and 25/34 (73.5%) biomarkers measured in serum were identified as significantly different between control, T2D and DN participants. DN patients, were older, smoked more, had higher systolic blood pressure and higher serum creatinine levels and lower eGFR function. Serum biomarkers significantly inversely correlated with eGFR. CONCLUSION This pilot-study identified several serum biomarkers that could be used to predict progression of T2D to more serious kidney disease: namely, midkine, sTNFR1 and 2, H-FABP and Cystatin C. Our results warrant confirmation in a longitudinal study using a larger patient cohort.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased perioperative pro-inflammatory biomarkers, renal hypoperfusion and ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) heighten cardiac surgery acute kidney injury (CS-AKI) risk. Increased urinary anti-inflammatory cytokines attenuate risk. We evaluated whether blood and urinary anti-inflammatory biomarkers, when expressed as ratios with biomarkers of inflammation, hypoperfusion and IRI are increased in CS-AKI patients. METHODS Preoperative and 24-h postoperative blood and urinary pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, blood VEGF and H-FABP (hypoperfusion biomarkers), and MK, a biomarker for IRI, were measured in 401 cardiac surgery patients. Pre- and postoperative concentrations of biomarkers and selected ratios thereof, were compared between non-CS-AKI and CS-AKI patients. RESULTS Compared with non-CS-AKI, blood pro-inflammatory (pre- and post-op TNFα, IP-10, IL-12p40, MIP-1α, NGAL; pre-op IL-6; post-op IL-8, MK) and anti-inflammatory (pre- and post-op sTNFsr1, sTNFsr2, IL-1RA) biomarkers together with urinary pro-inflammatory (pre- and post-op uIL-12p40; post-op uIP-10, uNGAL) and anti-inflammatory (pre- and post-op usTNFsr1, usTNFsr2, uIL-1RA) biomarkers, were significantly higher in CS-AKI patients. Urinary anti-inflammatory biomarkers, when expressed as ratios with biomarkers of inflammation (blood and urine), hypoperfusion (blood H-FABP and VEGF) and IRI (blood MK) were decreased in CS-AKI. In contrast, blood anti-inflammatory biomarkers expressed as similar ratios with blood biomarkers were increased in CS-AKI. CONCLUSIONS The urinary anti-inflammatory response may protect against the injurious effects of perioperative inflammation, hypoperfusion and IRI. These finding may have clinical utility in bioprediction and earlier diagnosis of CS-AKI and informing future therapeutic strategies for CS-AKI patients.

Abstract
Objective: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are effective anti-cancer drugs that can improve survival in cancer patients, but their use may be associated with adverse cardiovascular side effects. Therefore, there is a clinical unmet need to identify non-invasive biomarker to detect subclinical cardiac toxicity after ICI treatment. The aim of this study is to examine the plasma levels of biomarkers in cancer survivors who were treated with ICIs. Patients and Methods: In a cohort of 19 cancer patients, biomarkers were evaluated at baseline, 1 month, 3 and 6 months after ICI administration. These biomarkers, hypothesized to be mechanistically relevant to cardiotoxicity, included cardiac troponin I (cTnI), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP), N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP), CK (creatine kinase), CK-MB (creatine kinase-MB), Pentraxin-related protein 3 (PTX3), growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15), heart type-fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) and galectin 3 (Gal-3). Results: H-FABP, but not other biomarkers, were increased at 3 months, which persisted at 6 months (529.28 ± 312.83 vs. 752.33 ± 283.65 vs. 808.00 ± 289.69 pg/ml, p = 0.031 and p = 0.013). Left ventricular ejection fraction (63.00 ± 4.15% vs. 63.74 ± 4.07%, p > 0.05) was not significantly reduced at this time point. Conclusions: H-FABP, but not other biomarkers, were increased in patients who were treated using ICIs. H-FABP might be a more sensitive biomarker to detect ICI-related subclinical myocardial damage than traditional cardiac biomarkers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the left ventricular function in patients with heart failure (HF) after myocardial infarction (MI) by real-time three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (RT-3D-TEE) and explore its correlation with serum cTnI and H-FABP levels. METHODS The data of 60 HF patients after MI from March 2019 to January 2021 were analyzed retrospectively and included in the research group. According to cardiac function grades, they were assigned to group A (20 cases), group B (20 cases), and group C (20 cases). During the same period, 50 healthy patients were included in the control group. The left atrial diameter (LAD), interventricular septum thickness (IVST), left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWT), left ventricular end-systolic volume (LVESV), left ventricular end-diastolic volume (LVEDV), left ventricular stroke volume (LVSV), and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) of participants were recorded and compared in the four groups. The serum levels H-FABP and cTnI were tested by ELISA. RESULTS HF patients had poorer left heart structure and lower function and higher serum H-FABP and cTnI levels, as compared to the subjects in control group. Correlation analysis indicated that the cardiac function grade was positively correlated with LVEDV, LVESV, H-FABP, and cTnI, but negatively correlated with LVEF. The serum H-FABP and cTnI levels of HF patients were positively correlated with LVEDV and LVESV, but negatively correlated with LVEF. Logistic regression analysis revealed that cTnI and H-FABP were risk factors for HF, and LVEF was a protective factor for HF. CONCLUSION Serum H-FABP and cTnI levels in HF patients are correlated with left ventricular function parameters, which presents a close relation to HF. RT-3D-TEE combined with the detection of serum H-FABP and cTnI yields important clinical significance for early diagnosis of HF.

Abstract
We report the development of a highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescent lateral flow immunoassay (RFLFIA) strip for rapid and accurate detection of acute myocardial infarction biomarker, namely heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP). The RFLFIA strip works in terms of ratiometric change of fluorescence signal, arising from blending of fluorescence emitted by two composite nanostructures conjugated to capture and probe antibodies and inner filter effect of gold nanoparticles. In conjunction with using custom smartphone-based analytical device and tonality analysis, quantitative detection of H-FABP was achieved with a low limit of detection at 0.21 ng mL-1 . The RFLFIA strip can generate a visually distinguishable green-to-red color change around the threshold concentration of H-FABP (6.2 ng mL-1 ), thus allowing the semi-quantitative diagnosis by the naked eye.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is one of the most common causes of emergency department visits around the world. Up to 90% of injuries are classified as mTBI. Cranial computed tomography (CCT) is a standard diagnosis tool to identify intracranial complications in adults with mTBI. Alternatively, children can be admitted for inpatient observation with CCT scans performed only on those with clinical deterioration. The use of blood biomarkers is a supplementary tool for identifying patients at risk of intracerebral lesions who may need imaging. METHOD We realised a bibliographic state of art providing a contemporary clinical and laboratory framework for blood biomarker testing in mTBI management. RESULTS The S100B protein is the only biomarker that can be used today in the clinical routine for management of mTBI with appropriate evidence-based medicine. Due to its excellent negative predictive value, S100B protein is an alternative choice to CCT scanning for mTBI management with considered, consensual and pragmatic use. In this state of art, we propose points to help clinicians and clinical pathologists use serum S100B protein in the clinical routine. A state of art on the different biomarkers (GFAP, UCH-L1, NF [H or L], tau, H-FABP, SNTF, NSE, miRNAs, MBP) is also conducted. Some of these other biomarkers, used alone (GFAP, UCH-L1) or in combination (GFAP+H-FABP±S100B±IL10) can improve the specificity of S100B. CONCLUSION Using a bibliographic state of art, we highlighted the added values of the blood biomarkers for the clinical management of mTBI.

Abstract
Background: Disorders of thyroid gland are common in general population, and it’s the most common affecting the endocrine system after diabetes mellitus. Thyroid function regulates a wide range of metabolic parameters, as well as affects some cardiovascular disease risk factors. Fructosamine is produced by a reaction between albumin (protein) and glucose; it is used to monitor patients with diabetes for short-term glycemic changes. H-FABP is present in the cytoplasm of cardiac myocytes, and delivers fatty acids into these cells. It has been shown to increase in myocardial injury. Lipoprotein LP(a) is consist of a special apolipoprotein called apoprotein (a), and it’s recognized as a cardiovascular disease independent risk factor. Objective: To study whether certain metabolic and cardiovascular markers (fructosamine, H-FABP and lipoprotein (a) are changed in hypothyroid patients. Methods: The current study included 280 overt hypothyroid, 272 with subclinical hypothyroidism compared with 270 healthy individuals of matched age and gender. For all subjects serum (TSH, T4, T3, FBS, HbA1c, fructosamine, triglycerides, cholesterol, lipoprotein (a), and Heart-type Fatty Acid-Binding Protein (H-FABP)) was measured. Results: Serum fructosamine level significantly elevated (p value <0.05) in patient with hypothyroidism when compared with control group, and no significant change between subclinical and control groups. There is no significant change in serum H-FABP between study subjects. There is significant increase in lipoprotein (a) in patient with hypothyroidism and those with subclinical group when compared with control group. Conclusion: Serum fructosamine and level is significantly changed in patients with overt hypothyroidism when compared with euthyroid subjects. Also, we conclude that hypothyroidism increase risk of cardiovascular diseases by changing non-traditional marker such as lipoprotein (a), and no effect on H-FABP concentration.

Abstract
1. H-FABP (heart-type fatty acid-binding protein) is an important fatty acid-binding protein that participates in the metabolism and intracellular transportation of lipids. This study was designed to study the H-FABP gene expression and genetic association with meat quality traits in domestic pigeons.2. The spatio-temporal expression patterns showed that H-FABP was widely expressed in all eleven tissues in birds from hatching to 4 weeks of age, and the expression level in the liver was the highest, and spleen and subcutaneous fat showed relatively high levels at all time points, and increased markedly as squabs became older.3. Nine novel SNPs were found; three of them (g.42 C > T and g.123 C > T in exon 1 and g.3128 C > T in exon 2) were synonymous mutations, and six of them (g.3304 T > C, g.3305 G > A, g.3313A>G, g.3343 C > T, g.3372A>C, g.3410 T > C in exon 3) were located in the 3' untranslated region (UTR). In addition, four haplotypes and six diplotypes were formed and showed weak linkage disequilibrium. Association analysis showed that in the SNP of g.3305 G > A, the AB genotype showed higher (P < 0.05) inosinic acid concentrations in breast muscle than the BB genotype. In the SNP of g.3313A>G, the AA and AB genotypes showed significantly higher (P < 0.01) inosinic acid concentrations than the BB genotype, AA showed the highest intramuscular fat content, and the relative mRNA expression level of the AA genotype was the highest (P < 0.05).4. Association analysis of diplotypes showed no correlation with meat quality traits. Moreover, correlation analysis indicated that the H-FABP mRNA expression level was tightly related to intramuscular fat content (P < 0.01).5. This study suggested that the H-FABP gene may be a candidate gene in marker-assisted selection of pigeons for high-quality meat.

Abstract
Background: Prediabetes is increasingly being studied in the context of its association with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Besides raised HbA1c and sugar levels, the major underlying defect seems to be insulin resistance (IR). Subclinical atherosclerosis, measured by high sensitivity C reactive protein (hsCRP) and carotid artery intima media thickness (CIMT) underlies the pathogenesis of CVD in prediabetes. Heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP), a novel cardiac biomarker also might have a role in predictin prediabetic heart disease. Aims: The aim of the study is to compare serum levels of H-FABP in prediabetics and controls and correlate them with the atherosclerotic markers, hsCRP and CIMT. Setting and Design: 50 prediabetic patients and 50 age, sex and BMI matched controls were employed in the case control study. Serum F & PPBS, (HbA1c), fasting insulin levels were measured in cases and controls. Serum H-FABP was measured in both cases and controls. All cases and controls were subjected to bilateral CIMT measurements and Serum hsCRP levels. The values were compared between both the groups and subjected to appropriate statistical analysis. Statistical Analysis Used: Categorical variables were presented in number and percentage (%) and continuous variables were presented as mean ± SD and median. Normality of data was tested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. If the normality was rejected then non parametric test was used. Quantitative variables were compared using Independent t test/Mann-Whitney Test (when the data sets were not normally distributed) between the two groups. Qualitative variables were correlated using Chi-Square test/Fisher's Exact test. Spearman rank correlation coefficient was used to find out the correlation of various parameters with each other. Univariate linear regression was used to find out the cause and effect relationship between various parameters. A p <0.05 was considered statistically significant. The data analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0. Results: The mean serum levels of H-FABP among cases and controls were 6.38± 2.76ng/ml and 3.24 ± 2.47 ng/ml respectively (p <0.0001). Mean CIMT was found to be higher in prediabetics (0.59 ± 0.11 mm ) compared to controls (0.45 ± 0.07mm) (p<0.0001). Serum hsCRP levels were also statistically higher in prediabetics (5.75± 4.16 mg/l) then that of controls (1.86± 1.67 mg/l) (p <0.0001). The correlations of the two variables, hsCRP and CIMT with H-FABP were both strongly positive (r = 0.687) & (r = 0.779) respectively [both cases (p < 0.0001)]. Conclusion: The novel cardiac biomarker H-FAPB might be a good predictor of cardiovascular risks in prediabetics.

Abstract
Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains an ongoing therapeutic and diagnostic challenge to date. In this study we aimed for an analysis of the diagnostic potential of four novel cardiovascular biomarkers, GDF-15, H-FABP, sST2, and suPAR in HFpEF patients compared to controls as well as ICM, and DCM. Methods: In total, we included 252 stable outpatients and controls (77 DCM, 62 ICM, 18 HFpEF, and 95 controls) in the present study. All patients were in a non-decompensated state and on a stable treatment regimen. Serum samples were obtained and analyzed for GDF-15 (inflammation, remodeling), H-FABP (ischemia and subclinical ischemia), sST2 (inflammation, remodeling) and suPAR (inflammation, remodeling) by means of ELISA. Results: A significant elevation of GDF-15 was found for all heart failure entities compared to controls (p < 0.005). Similarly, H-FABP evidenced a significant elevation in all heart failure entities compared to the control group (p < 0.0001). Levels of sST2 were significantly elevated in ICM and DCM patients compared to the control group and HFpEF patients (p < 0.0001). Regarding suPAR, a significant elevation in ICM and DCM patients compared to the control group (p < 0.0001) and HFpEF patients (p < 0.01) was observed. An AUC analysis identified H-FABP (0.792, 95% CI 0.713–0.870) and GDF-15 (0.787, 95% CI 0.696–0.878) as paramount diagnostic biomarkers for HFpEF patients. Conclusion: Based on their differences in secretion patterns, novel cardiovascular biomarkers might represent a promising diagnostic tool for HFpEF in the future.

Abstract
Introduction: Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder, which is caused by abnormalities in the DMD gene that encodes the membrane cytoskeletal protein dystrophin. Besides progressive skeletal muscle wasting, dystrophinopathy also affects non-skeletal muscle tissues, including cells in the cardio-respiratory system, the central nervous system, the liver and the kidney.Areas covered: This review summarizes the proteomic characterization of a key class of lipid chaperones, the large family of fatty acid binding proteins, and their potential role in muscular dystrophy. Recent proteomic surveys using animal models and patient specimens are reviewed. Pathobiochemical changes in specific proteoforms of fatty acid binding protein in the multi-system pathology of dystrophinopathy are discussed.Expert opinion: The mass spectrometric identification of distinct changes in fatty acid binding proteins in muscle, heart, liver, kidney and serum demonstrates that considerable alterations occur in key steps of metabolite transport and fat metabolism in muscular dystrophy. These new findings might be helpful to further develop a comprehensive biomarker signature of metabolic changes in X-linked muscular dystrophy, which should improve (i) our understanding of complex pathobiochemical changes due to dystrophin deficiency, (ii) the identification of novel therapeutic targets, and (iii) the design of differential diagnostic, prognostic and therapy-monitoring approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart failure (HF) remains one of the leading causes of death to date despite extensive research funding. Various studies are conducted every year in an attempt to improve diagnostic accuracy and therapy monitoring. The small cytoplasmic heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) has been studied in a variety of disease entities. Here, we provide a review of the available literature on H-FABP and its possible applications in HF. Methods: Literature research using PubMed Central was conducted. To select possible studies for inclusion, the authors screened all available studies by title and, if suitable, by abstract. Relevant manuscripts were read in full text. RESULTS In total, 23 studies regarding H-FABP in HF were included in this review. CONCLUSION While, algorithms already exist in the area of risk stratification for acute pulmonary embolism, there is still no consensus for the routine use of H-FABP in daily clinical practice in HF. At present, the strongest evidence exists for risk evaluation of adverse cardiac events. Other future applications of H-FABP may include early detection of ischemia, worsening of renal failure, and long-term treatment planning.

Abstract
Myocardial infarction is a major cause of cardiac dysfunction. All components of the cardiac renin-angiotensin system (RAS) are upregulated in myocardial infarction. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and ACE2 are key enzymes involved in synthesis of components of RAS and provide a counter-regulatory mechanism within RAS. We compared the cardioprotective effect of the ACE2 activator diminazene aceturate (DIZE) versus the ACE inhibitor enalapril on post acute myocardial infarction (AMI) ventricular dysfunction in rats. Adult male rats received subcutaneous injections of either saline (control) or isoproterenol (85 mg/kg) to induce AMI. Rats with AMI confirmed biochemically and by ECG, were either left untreated (AMI) or administered DIZE (AMI + DIZE) or enalapril (AMI + enalapril) daily for 4 weeks. DIZE caused a significant activation of cardiac ACE2 compared with enalapril. DIZE caused a significantly greater enhancement of cardiac hemodynamics. DIZE also caused greater reductions in heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP), β-myosin heavy chain (β-MYH), and in heart mass to total body mass ratio. These results indicated that activation of cardiac ACE2 by DIZE enhanced the protective axis of RAS and improved myocardial function following AMI, whereas enalapril was not sufficient to restore all cardiac parameters back to normal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) is a cytoplasmic protein and is released form necrotic cardiac myocytes, as well as ischemic cardiac myocytes. In this study, we compared creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), H-FABP, and cardiac troponin T (cTnT) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), heart valve surgery, or septal defect surgery to evaluate the difference in detecting myocardial injury between three markers. METHODS A total of 69 patients (CABG, 32; valve surgery, 27; and septal defect surgery, 10) were prospectively enrolled. Blood samples were taken at specific intervals. RESULTS Mean amount (AUC0-72h) of CK-MB and cTnT released for 72 h in the patients with valve surgery were 2446 h·ng/ml and 93.2 h·ng/ml, which were significantly larger than those in the patients with CABG or septal defect surgery (p < .05). Mean amount (AUC0-72h) of H-FABP released for 72 h in the patients with CABG was 1939 h·ng/ml, which was significantly larger than that in the patients with septal defect surgery (700.1 h·ng/ml) (p < .05). CONCLUSION H-FABP would be a more useful marker for detecting myocardial ischemic injury than CK-MB and cTnT. CK-MB and cTnT would be more sensitive to myocardial injury with surgical trauma than with ischemic injury in the patients with cardiac surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study we sought to examine whether transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is followed by a change in the plasma levels of novel cardiovascular biomarkers. METHODS We collected blood samples of 79 patients with severe aortic valve stenosis undergoing TAVI before and at 7 days, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months post TAVI and analyzed the plasma concentrations of GDF-15, H-FABP, fetuin-A, galectin 3, sST2 and suPAR by means of ELISA. RESULTS There was a significant increase in the concentration of fetuin-A (median: 52.44 mg/ml to 113.2 mg/ml, p < 0.001) and a significant decrease of H-FABP after TAVI (median: 4.835 ng/ml to 2.534 ng/ml, p < 0.001). The concentrations of suPAR and sST2 showed an initial increase (suPAR median: 2755 pg/ml 3489 pg/ml, p < 0.001; sST2 median: 5832 pg/ml to 7137 pq/ml, p < 0.001) and subsequently decreased significantly. CONCLUSION We hypothesize that the decrease of H-FABP and the increase of fetuin-A could be due to a hemodynamic improvement after valve replacement. The initial increase of suPAR could indicate an inflammatory stimulus and the significant increase in sST2 could be due to the mechanical strain caused by implantation of the valve.

Abstract
Chronic heart failure (CHF) represents a major cause of hospitalization and death. Recent evidence shows that novel biomarkers such as soluble suppression of tumorigenicity (sST2), growth-differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) are correlated with inflammatory and ischemic responses in CHF patients. In this study we examined the effects of Ivabradine that inhibited the hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated channel (HCN channel, also called funny current If), thereby leading to selective heart rate reduction and improved myocardial oxygen supply on the cardiac biomarkers sST2, GDF-15, suPAR and H-FABP in 50 CHF patients at the University Hospital of Jena. Patients were divided into three groups based on the etiology of CHF: dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM, n=20), ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM, n=20) and hypertensive cardiomyopathy (HCM, n=10). The patients were administered Ivabradine (5 mg, bid for 3 months, and 7.5 mg bid for further 3 months). Analyses of cardiovascular biomarkers were performed at baseline as well as at 3- and 6-month follow-ups. At 6-month follow-up, GDF-15 levels were significantly reduced compared to baseline levels (P=0.0215), indicating a reduction in the progress of cardiac remodeling. H-FABP concentration was significantly lower in DCM patients compared to ICM (1.89 vs 3.24 μg/mL) and HCM patients (1.89 vs 3.80 μg/mL), and decreased over the 6-month follow-up (P=0.0151). suPAR median levels remained elevated, implying major ongoing inflammatory processes. As shown by significant decreases in GDF-15 and H-FABP levels, a reduction in ventricular remodeling and sub-clinical ischemia could be assumed. However, markers of hemodynamic stress (sST2) and inflammation (suPAR) showed no change or progression after 6 months of Ivabradine treatment in CHF patients. Further studies are necessary to validate the clinical applicability of these novel cardiovascular biomarkers.

Abstract
Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is reported to be higher in elderly diabetics. Serum heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) is a serum marker of myocardial ischemia. We aimed to investigate the association between serum H-FABP level and conventional cardiovascular risk factors, inflammatory markers and subclinical atherosclerosis in elderly diabetics without overt CVD. Patients and methods A total of 50 elderly diabetic patients without overt CVD and 30 age-, sex- and body mass index (BMI)-matched healthy controls were enrolled. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters, serum H-FABP, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), fibrinogen and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) were measured. Logistic regression analyses (adjustments for age, sex, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, BMI, blood pressure, lipid, blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, hs-CRP and fibrinogen) were performed to evaluate the association between H-FABP and cardiovascular risk factors and atherosclerosis indices. Results Serum fibrinogen (421.50±85.52 mg/dL vs 319.17±30.77 mg/dL, p=0.023), CIMT (0.70±0.12 mm vs 0.59±0.06 mm, p<0.001) and hs-CRP (5.72±4.50 mg/dL vs 1.60±0.72 mg/dL, p<0.001) were significantly higher in diabetic patients than controls. The mean serum H-FABP level did not differ between groups (1571.79±604.60 ng/mL vs 1500.25±463.35 ng/mL, p=0.905). H-FABP was positively correlated with fibrinogen (r2=0.473, p<0.001), hs-CRP (r2=0.323, p=0.003) and CIMT (r2=0.467, p<0.001). After full adjustments, the serum H-FABP level was independently associated with an increase in the fibrinogen level (odds ratio [OR] =4.21, 95% confidence level [CI] =1.49–11.90). Conclusion Serum H-FABP was similar in the elderly diabetic patients without known CVD when compared with the nondiabetic control group. H-FABP does not possess a high diagnostic value as a cardiovascular marker when used alone; however, it may add supplementary information in patients with a high fibrinogen level.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of dexmedetomidine on heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP), creatine kinase isoenzymes (CK-MB), and troponin I (cTnI) levels, neurological function and near-term prognosis in patients undergoing heart valve replacement. Patients undergoing heart valve replacement were randomly allocated to remifentanil anesthesia (control group, n=48) or dexmedetomidine anesthesia (observation group, n=48). Hemodynamic parameters were measured before anesthesia induction (T1), 1 min after intubation (T2), 10 min after start of surgery (T3), and on completion of surgery (T4). Levels of plasma H-FABP, CK-MB and cTnI were measured 10 min before anesthesia induction (C1), 10 min after start of surgery (C2), on completion of surgery (C3), 6 h after surgery (C4), and 24 h after surgery (C5). S100β protein and serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) were detected 10 min before anesthesia induction (C1), and 24 h after surgery (C5). Neurological and cardiac function was evaluated 24 h after surgery. Incidence of cardiovascular adverse events was recorded for 1 year of follow-up. There were no significant differences in the average heart rate between the two groups during the perioperative period. The mean arterial pressure in the observation group was significantly lower than control group (P<0.05). Levels of H-FABP, CK-MB and cTnI at C2, C3, C4 and C5, were significantly higher than C1, but significantly lower in the observation versus control group (P<0.05). Twenty-four hours after surgery, levels of S100β and NSE in both groups were higher than those before induction (P<0.05), but significantly lower in the observation versus control group (P<0.05). Twenty-four hours after surgery, neurological function scores were better, and myocardial contractility and arrhythmia scores significantly lower in the observation versus control group (P<0.05 for all). After follow-up for 1 year, incidence of cardiovascular adverse events was significantly lower in the observation versus control group (P<0.05). Dexmedetomidine anesthesia can effectively maintain hemodynamic stability, reduce myocardial injury and the occurrence of cognitive dysfunction, and improve prognosis in patients undergoing heart valve replacement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction remains a major therapeutic challenge. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of novel cardiovascular biomarkers, i.e. soluble suppression of tumorigenicity (sST2), growth-differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) in patients with ischaemic (ICM) or dilative cardiomyopathy (DCM). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 200 patients were enrolled in this study: 65 were diagnosed with DCM and 59 patients suffering from ICM were included. 76 patients without coronary artery disease or signs of heart failure were included as controls. Plasma samples of all patients were analyzed by use of ELISA. RESULTS Levels of sST2, suPAR and H-FABP were significantly higher in ICM and DCM patients compared to the control group (p<0.0001). However, there were no significant differences between ICM and DCM in biomarker levels. Ejection fraction correlated inversely with cardiac biomarkers (sST2 p<0.0001, GDF-15 p=0.0394, suPAR p=0.0029, H-FABP p<0.0001). Similarly, CRP levels also showed a positive correlation with cardiac biomarkers. Renal insufficiency (p<0.0001) and diabetes (sST2 p=0.0021, GDF-15 p=0.0055, suPAR p=0.0339, H-FABP p=0.0010) were significantly associated with a rise in cardiac biomarkers. CONCLUSION Novel cardiovascular biomarkers such as ST2, GDF-15, uPAR and H-FABP could offer a great potential for more precise diagnostic in ICM and DCM patients. H-FABP was the most promising marker in our study, followed by sST2, uPAR and GDF-15. Additional prospective studies will be necessary to further evaluate the potential clinical benefits in routine treatment of HF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Novel biomarkers representing different pathobiological pathways and their role in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were studied. METHODS We retrospectively analysed serum levels of soluble suppression of tumorigenicity (sST2), growth-differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR), heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) and plasma fetuin A in blood of patients with AMI (STEMI, n = 61; NSTEMI, n = 57) compared to controls with excluded coronary artery disease (n = 76). Furthermore, detailed correlation analysis was performed. RESULTS Compared with controls, in patients with STEMI and NSTEMI higher levels expressed as median of sST2 in pg/mL (STEMI: 13210·9, NSTEMI: 11989·1, control: 5248; P < 0·001), GDF-15 in pg/mL (STEMI: 818·8, NSTEMI 677·5, control 548·6; P < 0·001), suPAR in pg/mL (STEMI: 3461·1, NSTEMI: 3466·7, control: 2463·6; P < 0·001), H-FABP in ng/mL (STEMI: 5·8, NSTEMI: 5·4, control: 0·0; P < 0·001) and lower plasma fetuin A levels in μg/mL (STEMI: 95, NSTEMI: 54, control: 116·6; P < 0·001) were detected. Correlation analysis found clinical and biochemical parameters such as ejection fraction, length of hospital stay, creatine kinase, NT-proBNP and hs Troponin T levels as well as inflammatory markers (CRP, leucocytes) to be significantly correlated with novel biomarkers. CONCLUSION Plasma levels of novel biomarkers were significantly elevated (sST2, GDF-15, H-FABP, suPAR) or inversely downregulated (fetuin A) in patients with AMI compared to a control group with excluded coronary artery disease. Significant correlations with various clinical parameters and standard biochemical markers were found.

Abstract
Introduction Cardiac injury resulting from blunt thoracic trauma is a frequent clinical occurrence which is difficult to diagnose. Our purpose in this study was to research whether H-FABP, which is a new marker for the diagnosis of cardiac injury, can be used in this patient group. Methods 50 patients with blunt thoracic injury who were admitted to our emergency service within a period of 8 months and 50 cases as controls were included in our study. Results Of the 50 patients with blunt thoracic injury in our study, 88% were male while 12% were female. The average age of the patients was 43 ± 15.15. While 27 (54%) of the 50 patients with blunt thoracic injury had cardiac injury, 23 (46%) did not have cardiac injury. The results of the statistical analyses showed a significant association between thorax trauma and cTnI, CPK, CPKMB and H-FABP (p<0.05). While there was a significant association between cardiac injury resulting from thoracic trauma and cTnI, ECG and TTE (p<0.05), there was no significant association between CPK, CPKMB and H-FABP (p>0.05). Conclusion In thoracic traumas, cardiac injury diagnosis can be made as a result of the assessment with Troponin-I, ECG and ECHO. For cardiac injury diagnosis, wide scale prospective studies are needed for H-FABP use.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To explore the relationship between the heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) gene and intramuscular fat (IMF), a polymorphism of the second exon of the H-FABP gene was investigated in 60 Three-yellow chickens (TYCs) and 60 Hetian-black chickens (HTBCs). RESULTS The IMF contents of the cardiac, chest and leg muscles in HTBC were increased compared with TYC. Both TYC and HTBC populations exhibited Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) according to the χ(2) test. Three variations of the two birds were detected, namely, G939A, G982A and C1014T. HTBCs with the TT genotypes exhibit increased IMF content in the chest muscles compared with the TC genotype. Thus, the G982A site could be considered a genetic marker for selecting increased IMF content in the chest muscles of HTBC. The correlation coefficients revealed that H-FABP mRNA expression was negatively correlated with the IMF content in the cardiac, chest and leg muscles of HTBC and in the cardiac and chest muscles of TYC. The relative mRNA expression of H-FABP was reduced in the cardiac and leg muscles of HTBC compared with TYC, but this difference was not observed at the protein level, as assessed by Western blot analysis. CONCLUSIONS These findings offer essential data that can be useful in the breeding program of HTBC and future research exploring the role of H-FABP in IMF deposition and regulation in chickens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Many immunohistochemical markers have been used in the postmortem detection of early myocardial infarction. AIM: In the present study we examined the role of Heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP), in the detection of early myocardial infarction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We obtained samples from 40 human autopsy hearts with/without histopathological signs of ischemia. RESULTS: All cases of definite and probable myocardial infarction showed a well-defined area of H-FABP depletion. All of the control cases showed strong H-FABP expression, except two markedly autolysed myocardial samples that showed affected antigenicity. CONCLUSION: Thus, we suggest H-FABP as being one of the valuable tools facing the problem of postmortem detection of early myocardial infarction/ischemia, but not in autolysis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To develop a rapid, sensitive and specific assay for quantification of serum heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP) based on immunofluorescence of specific monoclonal antibodies. DESIGN AND METHODS We generated novel H-FABP-directed monoclonal antibodies by cloning of spleen cells of mice immunized with H-FABP. Epitopes were mapped and antigen affinity was assessed by surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The H-FABP specific monoclonal antibodies were coupled to fluorescent beads and sprayed onto a nitrocellulose membrane facilitating quantification of H-FABP by immunofluorescence. Reagent cross-reactivity, interference resistance, accuracy and sensitivity were examined. A total of 103 clinical samples were used to compare the sensitivity and specificity of the new assay to a commercially available Randox kit. RESULTS This new assay could be finished within 15 min, with sensitivity reaching 1 ng/ml. In a trial of 103 clinical serum samples, the new testing kit results were highly correlated with those from the Randox kit (R(2) = 0.9707). Using the Randox kit as the reference kit, the sensitivity of the new assay was 98.25%, and specificity was 100%. CONCLUSIONS An immunofluorescence-based H-FABP assay employing novel monoclonal antibodies could rapidly, specifically and sensitively detect H-FABP in serum samples, providing an effective method for rapid clinical assessment of H-FABP index in the clinic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Early life-threatening cardiotoxicity and cardiac death have been reported after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The purpose of the current study was to evaluate cardiac toxicity of conventional chemotherapy followed by HSCT with cardiac markers: heart-type fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP), glycogen phosphorylase BB (GPBB), high sensitive C reactive protein (hsCRP) cardiac troponin I, (cTnI), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB mass) and myoglobin. METHODS A total of 20 children who underwent HSCT for malignant and non-malignant diseases were included in this study. Blood samples were collected from all patients in 0th, 7th and 21st day for evaluating these cardiac biomarkers. The patients' echocardiography was assessment before and after one-month of HSCT. RESULTS Serum 21st H-FABP level was significantly higher when compared with the 0th day H-FABP level (P < 0.05) . 7th day hsCRP level was significantly higher than 0th and 21st day levels (P < 0.05). Interestingly, 7th day GPBB level was significantly lower than 0th and 21st day levels (P < 0.05). Myoglobin, CK-MB mass and cTnI biomarkers remained within the reference range in all patients. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that H-FABP and hsCRP both seem to be promising markers for evaluation of cardiotoxicity in HSCT process and probably superior to GPBB, cTnI, CK-MB mass and myoglobin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) is a useful biomarker for risk stratification of patients with pulmonary embolism (PE). In patients with acute myocardial infarction, H-FABP plasma concentrations rise after 30 minutes and return to normal within 20-24 hours. We tested whether the predictive value of H-FABP is affected by the duration of symptoms prior to diagnosis in patients with PE. MATERIAL AND METHODS We prospectively studied 257 consecutive normotensive patients with confirmed symptomatic PE. RESULTS Patients with acute (<24 hours; n=150) symptom onset presented more often with syncope (28.7% vs. 6.5%; p<0.001) compared to patients with symptoms ≥ 24 hours (n=107); other baseline characteristics, comorbidities, and risk factors were distributed equally. Patients with an adverse 30-day outcome (6.6%) had higher H-FABP levels (11.84 [3.57-19.62] ng/ml) compared to patients with a favorable course (3.42 [1.92-5.42] ng/ml; p<0.001). However, the proportion of patients with H-FABP levels ≥ 6 ng/ml did not differ among patients with acute symptom onset and late presentation (p=0.104). Only tachycardia and elevation of H-FABP were associated with an increased risk of an adverse 30-day outcome both in patients with acute symptom onset (H-FABP: OR, 5.8; 95% CI, 1.4-24.5; p=0.016; tachycardia: 7.0 [1.4-36.0]; p=0.018) and late presentation (H-FABP: 9.3 [2.0-43.2]; p=0.004 and tachycardia: 12.3 [1.5-103.6]; p=0.021). The prognostic value could further be improved by the use of a simple H-FABP-based clinical prediction score. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that H-FABP is a useful biomarker for risk stratification of normotensive patients with PE regardless of symptom duration prior to diagnosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vasospasm and other secondary neurological insults may follow subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). Biomarkers have the potential to stratify patient risk and perhaps serve as an early warning sign of delayed ischaemic injury. METHODS Serial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples were collected from 38 consecutive patients with aneurysmal SAH admitted to the neurosurgical intensive care unit. We measured heart-fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) and tau protein (τ) levels in the CSF to evaluate their association with brain damage, and their potential as predictors of the long-term outcome. H-FABP and τ were analysed in relation to acute clinical status, assessed by the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons (WFNS) scale, radiological findings, clinical vasospasm, and 6-month outcome. RESULTS H-FABP and τ increased after SAH. H-FABP and τ were higher in patients in poor clinical status on admission (WFNS 4-5) compared with milder patients (WFNS 1-3). Elevated H-FABP and τ levels were also observed in patients with early cerebral ischaemia, defined as a CT scan hypodense lesion visible within the first 3 days after SAH. After the acute phase, H-FABP, and τ showed a delayed increase with the occurrence of clinical vasospasm. Finally, patients with the unfavourable outcome (death, vegetative state, or severe disability) had higher peak levels of both proteins compared with patients with good recovery or moderate disability. CONCLUSIONS H-FABP and τ show promise as biomarkers of brain injury after SAH. They may help to identify the occurrence of vasospasm and predict the long-term outcome.
