Abstract
LIS1 (PAFAH1B1) plays a major role in the developing cerebral cortex, and haploinsufficient mutations cause human lissencephaly type 1. We have studied morphological and functional properties of the cerebral cortex of mutant mice harboring a deletion in the first exon of the mouse Lis1 (Pafah1b1) gene, which encodes for the LisH domain. The Lis1/sLis1 animals had an overall unaltered cortical structure but showed an abnormal distribution of cortical GABAergic interneurons (those expressing calbindin, calretinin, or parvalbumin), which mainly accumulated in the deep neocortical layers. Interestingly, the study of the oscillatory activity revealed an apparent inability of the cortical circuits to produce correct activity patterns. Moreover, the fast spiking (FS) inhibitory GABAergic interneurons exhibited several abnormalities regarding the size of the action potentials, the threshold for spike firing, the time course of the action potential after-hyperpolarization (AHP), the firing frequency, and the frequency and peak amplitude of spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSC’s). These morphological and functional alterations in the cortical inhibitory system characterize the Lis1/sLis1 mouse as a model of mild lissencephaly, showing a phenotype less drastic than the typical phenotype attributed to classical lissencephaly. Therefore, the results described in the present manuscript corroborate the idea that mutations in some regions of the Lis1 gene can produce phenotypes more similar to those typically described in schizophrenic and autistic patients and animal models.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex pathology with thousands of patients worldwide. During the acute early phase, neural tissue shows some regenerative properties that disappear at the chronic phase. Shock Waves and Stem Cells have been proposed as a possible therapy. METHODS Here, we analyse Shock Waves' immediate effect over spinal cord genetic response in the injured and healthy spinal cord and the effect of Shock Waves and combined Shock Waves plus Stem Cells distally grafted to treat the first month after spinal cord injury. RESULTS The immediate application of shock waves increases VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) but reduces the BDNF (Brain-Derived Growth Factor) RNA (Ribonucleic acid) response. Shock wave therapy increases GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) positive cells and vascularity during the treatment's acute phase. CONCLUSION Shock wave treatment seems to be enough to produce benefits in the acute phase of spinal cord injury, with no accumulative positive effects when mesenchymal stem cell graft is applied together.

Inhaled antibiotics for the treatment of chronic bronchopulmonary Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in cystic fibrosis: systematic review of randomised controlled trials. Expert Opin Pharmacother 2013; 14:1135-49. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inhaled antibiotics are probably the safest and most effective therapy for Pseudomonas aeruginosa chronic lung infection in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. AREAS COVERED To summarise the available evidence, a systematic review of the three currently available inhaled antibiotics (aztreonam lysine (AZLI), colistin (COL) and tobramycin (TOB)) was performed. The three AZLI placebo-controlled studies showed that the improvements in FEV1 and mean sputum P. aeruginosa density were statistically significant better than with placebo. The two COL placebo-controlled studies involved few patients but showed that COL was better than placebo in terms of maintenance of some pulmonary function parameters. The tobramycin inhalation solution (TIS) and tobramycin inhalation powder studies showed that the efficacy of both formulations was similar but significantly better than placebo. In the comparative studies, TIS showed more efficacy than COL solution, colistin inhalation powder showed non-inferiority to TIS and AZLI was superior to TIS. EXPERT OPINION Placebo-controlled and comparative clinical trials have shown that clinical evidence of inhaled antibiotics is very different. The choice of treatment for each individual CF patient must be based on the features of the drug (clinical evidence on efficacy and safety), the inhalation system and the patient characteristics. Development of new inhaled antibiotics will allow new end points of efficacy and therapy regimens to be assessed.

Abstract
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is attracting increasing interest as a therapeutic tool for neurorehabilitation, particularly after stroke, because of its potential to modulate local excitability and therefore promote functional plasticity. Previous studies suggest that timing is important in determining the behavioural effects of brain stimulation. Regulatory metaplastic mechanisms exist to modulate the effects of a stimulation intervention in a manner dependent on prior cortical excitability, thereby preventing destabilization of existing cortical networks. The importance of such timing dependence has not yet been fully explored for tDCS. Here, we describe the results of a series of behavioural experiments in healthy controls to determine the importance of the relative timing of tDCS for motor performance. Application of tDCS during an explicit sequence-learning task led to modulation of behaviour in a polarity specific manner: relative to sham stimulation, anodal tDCS was associated with faster learning and cathodal tDCS with slower learning. Application of tDCS prior to performance of the sequence-learning task led to slower learning after both anodal and cathodal tDCS. By contrast, regardless of the polarity of stimulation, tDCS had no significant effect on performance of a simple reaction time task. These results are consistent with the idea that anodal tDCS interacts with subsequent motor learning in a metaplastic manner and suggest that anodal stimulation modulates cortical excitability in a manner similar to motor learning.

Abstract
We present a simple and parameter-free nuclei tracking method for reconstructing cell dynamics in fluorescence 3D+t images of embryogenesis. The strategy is based on the use of the mathematical morphology operators directly in the 4D image. The morphological reconstruction of a marker -manually or automatically selected- in an initial spatio-temporal position generates a connected path over the time representing the cell migration. Thus, the processing provides a coherent spatiotemporal estimation of cell movement. The algorithm has been validated on in vivo images of early zebrafish and sea urchin embryogenesis acquired with two-photon laser scanning microscopy providing mean tracking rates above 98% per time step.

Abstract
We present a simple theoretical model of and the experimental verification for vanishing of the autocorrelation peak due to wavelength detuning on the coding-decoding process of coherent direct sequence optical code multiple access systems based on a superstructured fiber Bragg grating. Moreover, the detuning vanishing effect has been explored to take advantage of this effect and to provide an additional degree of multiplexing and/or optical code tuning.

Abstract
Calcium channels must be subjected to a very precise regulation in order to preserve cell function and viability. Voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC) represent the main pathway for calcium entry in excitable cells. This explains why depolarization induces a rapid-onset and short-term inactivation of calcium currents. Contrarily to this well-documented mechanism to maintain calcium below toxic levels, the regulatory pathways inducing longer-lasting changes and cell surface expression of functional calcium channels are largely unknown. Since calcium is a main player in the activity-dependent regulation of many genes, we hypothesize that calcium channel coding genes could be also subjected to activity-dependent regulation. We have used prolonged depolarization to analyze the effects of sustained intracellular calcium elevation on the mRNAs coding for the different alpha(1) pore-forming subunits of the calcium channels expressed in chromaffin cells. Our findings reveal that persistent depolarization is accompanied by a prolonged intracellular calcium elevation and reduction of calcium current. This calcium current inhibition could be mediated, at least partially, by the downregulation of the mRNAs coding for several alpha(1) subunits. Thus, we show here that depolarization inhibits the expression of Ca(V)1.1, Ca(V)1.2, Ca(V)1.3, Ca(V)2.2 and Ca(V)2.3 mRNAs, while the Ca(V)2.1 mRNA remains unmodified. Moreover, such downregulation of channels depends on calcium entry through the L-type calcium channel, as both mRNA and calcium current changes induced by depolarization are abrogated by L-type channel specific blockers.

A full description of a novel experimental setup allows the packet by packet measurement up to 16 hops with 10 Gb/s payload showing 1 dB penalty with 10(-12) bit error rate. Similarly, the simulations on the system allow a prediction on the cascadability of the router up to 64 hops.

Abstract
We propose the use of an actively mode-locked fiber laser as a multitap optical source for a microwave photonic filter. The fiber laser provides multiple optical taps with an optical frequency separation equal to the external driving radio-frequency signal of the laser that governs its repetition rate. All the optical taps show equal polarization and an overall Gaussian apodization, which reduces the sidelobes. We demonstrate continuous tunability of the filter by changing the external driving radio-frequency signal of the laser, which shows good fine tunability in the operating range of the laser from 5 to 10 GHz.

Minocycline fails to protect cerebellar granular cell cultures against malonate-induced cell death. Neurobiol Dis 2006; 20:384-91. Abstract
Experimental and clinical studies support the view that the semisynthetic tetracycline minocycline exhibits neuroprotective roles in several models of neurodegenerative diseases, including ischemia, Huntington, Parkinson diseases, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, recent evidence indicates that minocycline does not always present beneficial actions. For instance, in an in vivo model of Huntington's disease, it fails to afford protection after malonate intrastriatal injection. Moreover, it reverses the neuroprotective effect of creatine in nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. This apparent contradiction prompted us to analyze the effect of this antibiotic on malonate-induced cell death. We show that, in rat cerebellar granular cells, the succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor malonate induces cell death in a concentration-dependent manner. By using DFCA, monochlorobimane and 10-N-nonyl-Acridin Orange to measure, respectively, H2O2-derived oxidant species and reduced forms of GSH and cardiolipin, we observed that malonate induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production to an extent that surpasses the antioxidant defense capacity of the cells, resulting in GSH depletion and cardiolipin oxidation. The pre-treatment for 4 h with minocycline (10-100 microM) did not present cytoprotective actions. Moreover, minocycline failed to block ROS production and to abrogate malonate-induced oxidation of GSH and cardiolipin. Additional experiments revealed that minocycline was also unsuccessful to prevent the mitochondrial swelling induced by malonate. Furthermore, malonate did not induce the expression of the iNOS, caspase-3, -8, and -9 genes which have been shown to be up-regulated in several models where minocycline resulted cytoprotective. In addition, malonate-induced down-regulation of the antiapoptotic gene Bcl-2 was not prevented by minocycline, controversially the mechanism previously proposed to explain minocycline protective action. These results suggest that the minocycline protection observed in several neurodegenerative disease models is selective, since it is absent from cultured cerebellar granular cells challenged with malonate.

Abstract
Ischemia has different consequences on the survival of astrocytes and neurons. Thus, astrocytes show a remarkable resistance to short periods of ischemia that are well known to cause neuronal death. We have used a cell culture model of stroke, oxygen, and glucose deprivation (OGD), to clarify the mechanisms responsible for the exclusive resistance of astrocytes to ischemia. The expression of genes implicated in both ischemia-induced astrocyte death and post-ischemic survival was analysed by the RNA differential display technique. Our study revealed that the expression of the CEBP homologous protein (CHOP)-coding gene is promptly an intensely upregulated following astrocyte oxygen and glucose deprivation. CHOP mRNA induction was accompanied by the activation of other genes (grp78, grp95) that, alike CHOP, are involved in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. In addition, drugs that cause ER calcium depletion or protein N-glycosylation inhibition mimicked the effects of OGD on astrocyte survival, further supporting the involvement of ER in the astrocyte responses to OGD. Our experiments also demonstrated that upregulation of CHOP during the ER stress response is required for ischemia to cause astrocyte death. Not only the levels of CHOP mRNA and protein correlate perfectly with the degree of OGD-triggered cell injury, but also astrocyte death induced by OGD is significantly overcome by CHOP antisense oligonucleotide treatment. Nevertheless, we observed that astrocytes undergo apoptosis only when CHOP is permanently upregulated, and not when CHOP increases are transient. Finally, we found that the extent of CHOP induction is determined by the length of the ischemic stimulus. Taken together, our results indicate that permanent upregulation of CHOP is decisive for the induction of astrocyte death by OGD.

Abstract
The concentrations of PCBs, DDTs, HCHs, HCB and OCS were determined in sediments and associated biota, both invertebrates (Physella acuta, Hirudo medicinalis, chironomid larvae, Hydrous pistaceus, Helochares lividus) and vertebrates (Rana perezi), in a temporary aquatic system, a rice field in the Ebro Delta (NE Spain). The qualitative and quantitative distribution of organochlorine compounds in sediments and aquatic biota has been explained by two mechanisms: equilibrium partitioning and/or biomagnification through the trophic web. Nevertheless, bioaccumulation processes are by far more complex, since several biotic and abiotic factors contribute to the observed pollutant loads in the organisms. In this respect, the biological characteristics of the organisms considered (e.g. species, age, lipid contents, feeding habits, etc.), as well as ecological factors (e.g. the habitat of the species and vertical distribution), have been shown to account for the organochlorine levels observed.

Abstract
In this paper, the procedure to optimize flat-top Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) devices in terms of transmission and dispersion properties is presented. The systematic procedure consists on the stigmatization and minimization of the Light Path Function (LPF) used in classic planar spectrograph theory. The resulting geometry arrangement for the Arrayed Waveguides (AW) and the Output Waveguides (OW) is not the classical Rowland mounting, but an arbitrary geometry arrangement. Simulation using previous published enhanced modeling show how this geometry reduces the passband ripple, asymmetry and dispersion, in a design example.

Abstract
We present a closed-form expression for computation of the output pulse's rms time width in an optical fiber link with up to fourth-order dispersion (FOD) by use of an optical source with arbitrary linewidth and chirp parameters. We then specialize the expression to analyze the effect of FOD on the transmission of very high-speed linear optical time-division multiplexing systems. By suitable source chirping, FOD can be compensated for to an upper link-length limit above which other techniques must be employed. Finally, a design formula to estimate the maximum attainable bit rate limited by FOD as a function of the link length is also presented.

Abstract
Toxic and genotoxic effects of alachlor, metolachlor, amitraz, chlordimeform, their respective environmentally stable degradation products 2,6-diethylaniline, 2-ethyl-4-methylaniline, 2,4-dimethylaniline, and two other related compounds, 3,4-dichloroaniline and aniline were compared. Acute toxicity tests with Chironomus riparius (96 h) and Vibrio fischeri (Microtox) and genotoxicity tests with a dark mutant of V. fischeri (Mutato) were carried out. Our results demonstrate that toxicity and genotoxicity of the pesticides are retained upon degradation to their alkyl-aniline metabolites. In the case of the herbicides alachlor and metolachlor, the toxicity to V. fischeri was enhanced upon degradation. Narcosis alone explains toxicity of the compounds to the midge, but not so for the bacteria suggesting a disparity in the selectivity of the test systems. All compounds showed direct genotoxicity in the Vibrio test. but amitraz and its metabolite were genotoxic at concentrations 10(3)-10(5) lower than all the other compounds. The observations indicate that stable aniline degradation products of the pesticides may contribute considerably to environmental risks of pesticides application and that genotoxic effects may arise upon degradation of pesticides.

Abstract
The spatial distribution and fate of petrogenic and pyrogenic hydrocarbons in coastal sediments following the Aegean Sea oil spill (Galicia, NW Spain) was investigated through a detailed study of chemical markers. Alkanes and acyclic isoprenoid hydrocarbons were degraded within six months of the accident, but triterpane and sterane distributions were still detectable and were useful in monitoring, respectively, the oil source and weathering. Aromatic steranes were also useful source indicators, and oil degradation was clear from the decrease of certain alkyl dibenzothiophene and phenanthrene isomers. The pyrogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons produced in the tanker wreck were found more persistent than the petrogenic ones. However, the presence of the oil in the sediments was recognized even one year after the accident and was found particularly preserved in the subsurface layers.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Because data to determine which preoperative laboratory tests are important in elderly surgical patients are limited, we performed a prospective cohort study to evaluate the prevalence and predictive value of abnormal preoperative laboratory tests in consecutive patients > or =70 yr old who were undergoing noncardiac surgery. Patients presenting for surgery requiring only local anesthesia or monitored anesthesia care were excluded. Preoperative risk factors and laboratory test results were measured and evaluated for their association with the occurrence of predefined in-hospital postoperative adverse outcomes. In 544 patients, the prevalence of preoperative electrolytes and platelet count abnormalities (<115 x10(9)/L) was small (0.5%-5%), and abnormal creatinine (>1.5 mg/dL), hemoglobin (<10 g/dL), and glucose (>200 mg/dL) values were 12%, 10%, and 7%, respectively. Univariate predictors for adverse outcome of abnormal sodium and creatinine were not as predictive as ASA classification and surgical risk. By multivariate logistic regression, only ASA classification (>II) (odds ratio [OR], 2.55; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.56-4.19; P < 0.001) and surgical risk (OR, 3.48; 95% CI, 2.31-5.23; P < 0.001) were significant independent predictors of postoperative adverse outcomes. The prevalence of abnormal preoperative electrolyte values and thrombocytopenia was small and had low predictive values. Although more prevalent, abnormal hemoglobin, creatinine, and glucose values were also not predictive of postoperative adverse outcomes. Routine preoperative testing for hemoglobin, creatinine, glucose, and electrolytes on the basis of age alone may not be indicated in geriatric patients. Rather, selective laboratory testing, as indicated by history and physical examination, which will determine patient's comorbidities and surgical risk, seems to be indicated. Abstract
BACKGROUND Controversy exists regarding the lowest blood hemoglobin concentration that can be safely tolerated. The authors studied healthy resting humans to test the hypothesis that acute isovolemic reduction of blood hemoglobin concentration to 5 g/dl would produce an imbalance in myocardial oxygen supply and demand, resulting in myocardial ischemia. METHODS Fifty-five conscious healthy human volunteers were studied. Isovolemic removal of aliquots of blood reduced blood hemoglobin concentration from 12.8 +/- 1.2 to 5.2 +/- 0.5 g/dl (mean +/- SD). Removed blood was replaced simultaneously with intravenous fluids to maintain constant isovolemia. Hemodynamics and arterial oxygen content (Cao2) were measured before and after removal of each aliquot of blood. Electrocardiographic (ECG) changes were monitored continuously using a Holter ECG recorder for detection of myocardial ischemia. RESULTS During hemodilution, transient, reversible ST-segment depression developed in three subjects as seen on the electrocardiogram during hemodilution. These changes occurred at hemoglobin concentrations of 5-7 g/dl while the subjects were asymptomatic. Two of three subjects with ECG changes had significantly higher heart rates than those without ECG changes at the same hemoglobin concentrations. When evaluating the entire study period, the subjects who had ECG ST-segment changes had significantly higher maximum heart rates than those without ECG changes, despite having similar baseline values. CONCLUSION With acute reduction of hemoglobin concentration to 5 g/dl, ECG ST-segment changes developed in 3 of 55 healthy conscious adults and were suggestive of, but not conclusive for, myocardial ischemia. The higher heart rates that developed during hemodilution may have contributed to the development of an imbalance between myocardial supply and demand resulting in ECG evidence of myocardial ischemia. However, these ECG changes appear to be benign because they were reversible and not accompanied by symptoms.

Effects of dobutamine on hemodynamics and left ventricular performance after cardiopulmonary bypass in cardiac surgical patients. Anesthesiology 1999; 91:1318-28. Abstract
BACKGROUND Dobutamine is commonly used to improve ventricular performance after cardiopulmonary bypass. The authors determined the effect of dobutamine on hemodynamics and left ventricular performance immediately after cardiopulmonary bypass in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. METHODS One hundred patients received sequential 3-min infusions of dobutamine at 0-40 microg x kg(-1) x min(-1) immediately after cardiopulmonary bypass. Ten additional patients who received no dobutamine served as controls. Hemodynamics and left ventricular performance (fractional area change by transesophageal echocardiography, stroke volume index, and thermodilution cardiac index) were measured. Mixed-effects modeling accounted for repeated-measures data and interindividual differences and allowed for potential effects of covariates. RESULTS Heart rate increased in a dose-dependent manner. The slope of HR versus dobutamine dose was steeper in individuals in whom peak dobutamine dose was not reached compared with that in the remaining individuals; slope decreased 2.71 +/- 0.68% per year of age. Dobutamine affected blood pressure minimally, but slightly decreased pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and central venous pressure. Systemic vascular resistance initially increased with dobutamine 10 microg x kg(-1) x min(-1) and remained constant with larger doses. Dobutamine produced a dose-dependent increase in left ventricular performance, primarily by increasing heart rate, because stroke volume index decreased with dobutamine dose. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that the response to graded dobutamine infusion in the post-cardiopulmonary bypass period differs from that previously reported. After cardiopulmonary bypass, the dominant mechanism by which dobutamine improves left ventricular performance is by increasing heart rate. Dobutamine affects blood pressure minimally.

The use of microsomal in vitro assay to study phase I biotransformation of chlorobornanes (Toxaphene) in marine mammals and birds. Possible consequences of biotransformation for bioaccumulation and genotoxicity. COMPARATIVE BIOCHEMISTRY AND PHYSIOLOGY. PART C, PHARMACOLOGY, TOXICOLOGY & ENDOCRINOLOGY 1998; 121:385-403. Abstract
The factors determining the bioaccumulation of lipophilic compounds in wildlife are often poorly understood, partly because it is difficult to do in vivo experiments with animals such as marine mammals and birds. To evaluate the role of phase I biotransformation in the bioaccumulation process of chlorobornanes (toxaphene), this was studied in in vitro assays with hepatic microsomes of animals that could be sampled shortly after death. The capacity of microsomes to metabolise a technical toxaphene mixture decreased in the order Phoca vitulina (harbour seal) >> Lagenorhynchus albirostris (whitebeaked dolphin) approximately equal to Diomedea immutabilis (Laysan albatross) > Physeter macrocephalus (sperm whale). Harbour seal microsomes metabolised the chlorobornane (CHB) congeners CHB-32 and CHB-62; whitebeaked dolphin and Laysan albatross microsomes only metabolised CHB-32. Metabolism of CHB-26 and CHB-50 was never observed. The negative chemical ionisation (NCI-) mass spectra of some of the hydroxylated metabolites were obtained. The number of peaks in the toxaphene residues of wildlife extracts decreased in the order of increasing in-vitro biotransformation capacity. Thus, the results of the in vitro assays and residue analysis were in accordance, although assays with microsomes of more individuals of the same species are required for a more general conclusion at the species level. Finally, the effect of in vitro biotransformation was evaluated in terms of the genotoxic potential using the Mutatox assay. Only technical toxaphene and CHB-32 were genotoxic in the direct assay, whereas the addition of rat S9 fraction or microsomes of harbour seal and albatross decreased the genotoxic response. Thus, organisms with a low ability to metabolise chlorobornanes, such as whales, may be most affected by the carcinogenic properties of toxaphene. A hypothetical reaction which fits the experimental results is discussed. Based on these results it is concluded that in vitro assays with microsomes of wildlife animals which died a natural cause can act as a valuable tool to assess the occurrence and effects of phase I metabolism. Some precautions are discussed, that should be taken to reduce the chance of false negative results.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Continuous automated ST segment trending devices (ST trending monitors) are included in most new operating room electrocardiography (ECG) monitors to facilitate ischemia detection, but their efficacy is not well validated. Therefore, we compared their accuracy with that of Holter ECG recorders in detecting ST segment changes (both analyzed offline) in 94 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Holter ECG tapes were analyzed using standard criteria for determining ECG ischemic episodes, which were compared with those measured by the ST trending monitors. Overall, 42 ischemic episodes were detected by using the Holter monitor in 30 patients. Of the 42 episodes, 38 (90%) were also detected by the ST trending monitors. Sixteen episodes of ST segment deviation were detected by the ST trending monitors, but not by the Holter. The sensitivity of the three ST trending monitors in detecting ischemia was 75%, 78%, and 60% for the Marquette (Milwaukee, WI), Hewlett Packard (Andover, MA), and Datex (Helsinki, Finland) monitors, respectively, with a specificity of 89%, 71%, and 69% relative to the Holter. Compared with the HP and Datex monitors, the Marquette monitor has the best agreement with the Holter (K 0.64). Conditions in which ST trending monitors may be inaccurate were identified and included the appearance of small R-wave amplitude, drifting baseline, and during periods of conduction abnormalities and pacing. We conclude that ST trending monitors have only moderate sensitivity and specificity (< 75% overall) in accurately detecting ECG ST segment changes compared with Holter ECG recordings. Therefore, sole reliance on ST trending monitors for the detection of myocardial ischemia may be insufficient. IMPLICATIONS Using Holter recordings as the reference standard for detection of intraoperative ischemia, ST trending monitors were found to have overall sensitivity and specificity of 74% and 73%, respectively. Several conditions contribute to the inaccuracy of ST trend monitoring, and additional modification of their performance is necessary to achieve better agreement with the Holter analysis.

Abstract
Polychlorinated biphenyls, dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans were analysed in eggs of a protected gull species, the Audouin's Gull (Larus audouinii) and compared to those of the Yellow-legged Gull (Larus cachinnans), both breeding in the Western Mediterranean (Ebro Delta and Medes Islands, respectively). Differences in concentrations as well as in congener profiles reflected differences in both habitat and diet of the two species. Levels of AHH-active PCB congeners were lower in Yellow-legged Gull (0.4-1.6 micrograms/g d.w) than in Audouin's Gull eggs (1.2-33.9 micrograms/g d.w.). These concentrations, expressed in international toxic equivalence factors (i-TEQ/g d.w.), were on average 24 times higher in the Audouin's gull. I-TEQ levels due to dioxins were also higher in this species by a factor of ca. 7. I-TEQ levels related to PCBs resulted 90-230 times higher than those of dioxins and furans. Thus, AHH-inducing PCBs might represent even higher toxicological hazards than dioxins and furans to some populations of seabirds. The necessity of assessing the impact of these compounds in rare and protected species is pointed out.

Abstract
The aerial part of Artemisia douglasiana, used in folk medicine as a cytoprotective agent against the development of peptic ulcer, was studied, its active principle dehydroleucodine [1] isolated, and its pharmacological properties analyzed. In order to establish whether or not the reported activity is particular to sesquiterpene lactones, the study of the cytoprotective activity of several related guaianolides and pseudoguaianolides from plants was undertaken. Ludartin [3], 8-angeloyloxy-3-hydroxyguaia-3(15),10(14),11(13)-trien-6,12- olide [4], hymenin [5], mexicanin I [6], helenanin [7], and 9-O-desacetylsparthulin-2-O-angelate [8] were found to exhibit protection. Desacetoxymatricarin [2] did not show cytoprotective activity. The results obtained from the different sesquiterpene lactones studied suggest that the presence of the alpha-methylene-gamma-lactone moiety is, in principle, a requirement for the observed antiulcerogenic activity.
