Green synthesis of sustainable magnetic nanoparticles Fe3O4 and Fe3O4-chitosan derived from Prosopis farcta biomass extract and their performance in the sorption of lead(II)

The sustainable processes are now in tremendous demand for nanomaterial synthesis as a result of their unique properties and characteristics. The magnetic nanoparticles comprised of Fe3O4 and its conjugate with abundant and renewable biopolymer, chitosan, were synthesized using Prosopis farcta biomass extract, and the resulting materials were used to adsorb Pb (II) from aqueous solution. Thermodynamic parameters revealed that the sorption of lead (II) on Fe3O4 as well as Fe3O4-Chitosan (Fe3O4-CS) has been an endothermic and self-regulating procedure wherein the sorption kinetics was defined by a pseudo-second-order pattern and the sorption isotherms corresponded to the Freundlich pattern. A multivariable quadratic technique for adsorption process optimization was implemented to optimize the lead (II) adsorption on Fe3O4 and Fe3O4-chitosan nanoparticles, the optimal conditions being pH 7.9, contact time of 31.2 min, initial lead concentration of 39.2 mg/L, adsorbent amount of 444.3 mg, at a 49.7 °C temperature. The maximum adsorption efficiencies under optimal conditions were found to be 69.02 and 89.54 % for Fe3O4 and Fe3O4-CS adsorbents, respectively. Notably, Fe3O4 and Fe3O4-CS can be easily recovered using an external magnet, indicating that they are a viable and cost-effective lead removal option.

Maternal exposure to benzophenone derivatives and their impacts on offspring's birth outcomes in a Middle Eastern population

Widespread use of benzophenones (BPs), a group of environmental phenolic compounds, is suspected of interfering with human health. The association of prenatal exposure to benzophenone derivatives with birth outcomes including birth weight and length, head, arm and thoracic circumference, abnormalities, corpulence index and anterior fontanelle diameter (AFD) was investigated. Mother-infant pairs of 166 within PERSIAN cohort population in Isfahan, Iran, in the 1st and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy were assessed. Four common benzophenone metabolites including 2,4-dihydroxy benzophenone (BP-1), 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy benzophenone (BP-3), 4-hydroxy benzophenone (4-OH-BP) and 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxy benzophenone (BP-8) were measured in maternal urine samples. The median concentration of 4-OH-BP, BP-3, BP-1 and BP-8 were 3.15, 16.98, 9.95 and 1.04 µg/g Cr, respectively. In the 1st trimester, 4-OH-BP showed a significant correlation with AFD in total infants, decreasing 0.034 cm AFD per a log unit increase of 4-OH-BP. Within the male neonates, 4-OH-BP in the 1st and BP-8 in the 3rd trimester were significantly associated with head circumference and AFD increase, respectively. Among female neonates in the 3rd trimester, increasing 4-OH-BP and BP-3 concentration was correlated with a decrease in birth weight and AFD, respectively. This study demonstrated that all the target BP derivatives can influence normal fetal growth at any age of the pregnancy, nevertheless, to support these findings further studies are needed in a large and different group population.

Efficiency of Ag3PO4/TiO2 as a heterogeneous catalyst under solar and visible light for humic acid removal from aqueous solution

Nowadays, the presence of humic acid (HA) in water sources is highly regarded due to the production of extremely harmful byproducts such as trihalomethanes. In this study, the effectiveness of an Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ catalyst produced by in situ precipitation as a heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of humic acid in the existence of visible and solar light was evaluated. The Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ catalyst's structure was characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), after which the catalyst dosage, HA concentration, and pH parameters were adjusted. After a 20-min reaction, the highest HA degradation of 88.2% and 85.9% in presence of solar light and visible light were attained at the ideal operating conditions of 0.2 g/L catalyst, 5 mg/L HA, and pH 3, respectively. It was discovered that, based on kinetic models, the degradation of HA matched both Langmuir-Hinshelwood and pseudo-first-order kinetics at concentrations of 5 to 30 mg/L (R² > 0.8). The Langmuir-Hinshelwood model had surface reaction rate constants (K_c) of 0.729 mg/L.min and adsorption equilibrium constants (K_L-H) of 0.036 L/mg. Eventually, a real-water investigation into the process' effectiveness revealed that, under ideal circumstances, the catalyst had a reasonable HA removal efficiency of 56%.

Non-carcinogenic and cumulative risk assessment of exposure of kitchen workers in restaurants and local residents in the vicinity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH_s) are often formed when organic substances do not burn completely. This study evaluates the non-carcinogenic and cumulative risks associated with PAH_s levels by testing blood and urine samples in kitchen workers and residents near restaurants in Shiraz, Iran. Metabolites of PAH in the urine samples as well as clinical parameters in the blood samples were measured. The non-carcinogenic and cumulative risk assessments from exposure of the study groups to PAH metabolites were also evaluated. The highest average concentrations of PAH metabolites were related to kitchen workers (2126.7 ng/g creatinine (ng/g cr)). The metabolites of 1-Hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) and 9-Phenanthrene (9-OHPhe) had the highest and lowest mean concentrations, respectively. A direct correlation was observed between the levels of PAH metabolites with malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidation capacity (TAC) levels (p < 0.05). Hazard Index (HI_i) was obtained less than one (HI_i < 1), indicating low-risk negative health impacts on the target groups. Nevertheless, conducting more studies to determine the health status of these people is quite evident.

Modeling and optimization approach for phytoremediation of formaldehyde from polluted indoor air by Nephrolepis obliterata plant

This study aimed to model the removal of formaldehyde as an indoor air pollutant by Nephrolepis obliterata (R.Br.) J.Sm. plant using response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN) models, and optimization of the models by particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). The data obtained in pilot-scale experiments under a controlled environment were used in this study. The effects of parameters on the removal efficiency such as formaldehyde concentration, relative humidity, light intensity, and leaf surface area were empirically investigated and considered as model parameters. The results of the RSM model, with power transformation, were in meaningful compromise with the experiments. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network was also designed, and the mean of squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and R² were used to evaluate the network. Several training algorithms were assessed and the best one, the Levenberg Marquardt (LM), was selected. The PSO algorithm proved that the highest removal efficiency of formaldehyde was obtained in the presence of light, maximum leaf surface area and relative humidity, and at the lowest inlet concentration. The empirical system breakthrough occurred at 15 mg/m³ of formaldehyde, and the maximum elimination capacity was about 0.96 mg per m² of leaves. The findings indicated that the ANN model predicted the removal efficiency more accurately compared to the RSM model.

Natural history of subclinical hypothyroidism and prognostic factors for the development of overt hypothyroidism: Tehran Thyroid Study (TTS)

OBJECTIVE

The significance of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) is largely due to its potential risk for developing overt hypothyroidism (OH). Investigations are still exploring predictive factors contributing to the progression of SCH to OH, particularly in patients with mildly elevated serum thyrotropin (TSH). We aimed to clarify the natural history of SCH and the predictive factors of its progression, based on the grade of SCH severity.

METHODS

This study was conducted within the framework of the Tehran Thyroid Study (TTS), in which 5783 individuals aged ≥ 20 years were followed. After applying exclusion criteria, data of 270 SCH subjects remained for the analysis. Thyroid function tests were assessed at baseline and every 3 years.

RESULTS

Of 270 participants with SCH, 239 (88.5%) had TSH level between 5.06 and 10 mU/L, and 31 (11.4%) had TSH ≥ 10 mU/L. During a median follow-up of 10 years, 40% had TSH within the reference range, 44% maintained elevated TSH, and 16% had added low T4 to the elevated TSH. The annual incidence rate of progression to OH was 22.3 (16.5-101.9) per 1000 person-years [18 (12.6-25.6) for those with TSH 5.07-9.9 mU/L and 57.8 (22.8-101.9) for patients with TSH ≥ 10 mU/L per 1000 person-years (P = 0.001)]. After adjusting age, sex, body mass index (BMI), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb), and serum TSH, only TPOAb positivity (HR: 2.31; 95% CI 1.10-4.83, P = 0.026) and baseline TSH level ≥ 10 mU/L (HR: 5.14; 95% CI 2.14-12.3, P < 0.001) remained as predictors for development of OH. In patients with TSH 5.07-9.9 mU/L, TPOAb positivity was associated with an increased risk of OH (HR: 2.41; 95% CI 1.10-5.30, P = 0.027). However, in patients with TSH ≥ 10 mU/L, TPOAb positivity was not a predictor (P = 0.49).

CONCLUSION

TPOAb and not TSH are associated with the development of OH in individuals with serum TSH below 10 mU/L, and follow-up at regular intervals is recommended in TPOAb-positive individuals with TSH between 5 and 10 mU/L.

Comparative photo-oxidative degradation of etodolac, febuxostat and imatinib mesylate by UV-C/H2O2 and UV-C/S2O82- processes: Modeling, treatment optimization and biodegradability enhancement

The pharmaceutical contamination in aquatic environment has arisen increasing concern due to its potentially chronic toxicity. In recent years, HO° and SO₄°^- based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been widely applied in water and wastewater treatments due to their highly efficiency on contaminant removal. Here, the response surface modeling (RSM) was used to investigate the degradation of three typical pharmaceuticals (i.e., etodolac (ETD), febuxostat (FBU) and imatinib mesylate (IMT)) by UV/H₂O₂ and UV/S₂O₈^2- processes. Based on the multiple regression analysis on full factorial design matrix and calculated reaction rate constants, the RSM was built. The experimental rate constants under optimal conditions were quite close to those obtained from the model, implying the good fit of the RSM. In addition, the RSM results indicated that UV/S₂O₈^2- process was less sensitive to pH in comparison to the UV/H₂O₂ process on target contaminant removal. Finally, it showed that UV/S₂O₈^2- process was superior to the UV/H₂O₂ process to on the enhancement of target contaminant biodegradability.

Health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in individuals living near restaurants: a cross-sectional study in Shiraz, Iran

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent toxic substances that have ubiquitous presence in water, air, soil, and sediment environments, posing serious environmental risks. The present study aimed to investigate the concentrations of urinary PAHs and their health effects in individuals living near restaurants via a health risk assessment analysis. This cross-sectional study was performed on 57 people living near restaurants and 30 individuals as the control group. Five urinary metabolites of PAHs were monitored. In order to evaluate the effects of the urinary metabolites of PAHs on Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, Total Anti-oxidation Capacity (TAC) in urine samples, and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) in serum samples, regression model was used by considering the effects of the possible confounding factors. Non-carcinogenic health risk was calculated, as well. The median concentration of urinary PAHs was 1196.70 and 627.54 ng/g creatinine in the people living near restaurants and the control group, respectively. Among the metabolites, the lowest and highest mean concentrations were related to 9-OHPhe and 1-OHP, respectively in the two study groups. Moreover, PAHs were significantly associated with MDA level and TAC (p < 0.05). Hazard Quotient (HQ) and Hazard Index (HI) were less than 1. Long-term studies are required to determine the actual health effects by identifying the sources of PAHs emission and to find ways to decrease the production of these compounds.

The association of prenatal exposure to benzophenones with gestational age and offspring size at birth

In recent decades, emerging environmental pollutants such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have become a particular concern. This study examined the association of maternal exposure to benzophenones as one of the EDCs with gestational age and evaluated their effects on birth outcomes including birth weight, birth length, head circumference, and Ponderal Index. We assessed 166 pregnant mothers of the PERSIAN cohort population of Isfahan, Iran, in the 1st and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy and their infants at birth. Four common benzophenones (BPs) including 2,4-dihydroxy benzophenone (BP-1), 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy benzophenone (BP-3), 4-hydroxy benzophenone (4-OH-BP), and 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxy benzophenone (BP-8) were measured in maternal urine samples. The median urinary concentrations of 4-OH-BP, BP-3, BP-1, and BP-8 in the 1st trimester were 6.62, 7.5, 4.39, and 1.32 µg/g creatinine and those in the 3rd trimester were 3.15, 16.98, 9.95, and 1.04 µg/g creatinine, respectively. BP-3 was the predominant metabolite in both trimesters. There was a significant correlation between BP-3, BP-1, and 4-OH-BP levels (p < 0.05) but not BP-8. BP-1 showed a significant positive association with gestational age (GA) in all infants in the 1st trimester, but a negative association was observed between BP-3 and BP-1 levels and GA in girls. Classification of infants' birth weight for different GAs represented that the majority of them were appropriate for GA. However, boys' weights were heavier than girls. Also, birth outcomes of preterm (< 37 weeks) infants were noticeably lower than term infants (37-42 weeks). This study demonstrated that benzophenone derivatives especially BP-3 can affect the duration of pregnancy and consequently fetal growth in the early and late stages of pregnancy. This is more pronounced in girls; however, more investigations in a different population are needed to prove the results. Therefore, the application of these compounds as a UV protector requires precise regulation to reduce exposure, especially in pregnant women.

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-induced oxidative stress in individuals living near restaurants: a cross-sectional study in Shiraz, Iran

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are environmental pollutants caused by the incomplete combustion of organic matter. The aim of this study was to investigate the concentration of urinary PAHs and their health effects in individuals living near restaurants. This cross-sectional study was done on 57 individuals who were living near 36 restaurants, and 30 individuals as the control group. Five urinary metabolites of PAHs (1-OH pyrene, 1-OH naphthalene, 2-OH naphthalene, 2-OH fluorine, and 9-OH phenanthrenen) were monitored. The total anti-oxidation capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), C-reactive protein (CRP), and creatinine were also measured. The mean concentration of the sum of urinary PAHs (ΣOH-PAHs) was 1973.7, and 1687.61 ng/g creatinine in people living near restaurants and control group, respectively. Among the metabolites, the highest mean concentration was related to 1-OH Pyrene in the two study groups. In the individuals living near restaurants, the concentration of PAH metabolites was directly related to MDA and TAC (p < 0.05 for both). The present study findings revealed no significant correlation between PAH metabolites and CRP in the two study groups (P > 0.05). People living near restaurants are more exposed to components in cooking fumes, which may adversely affect their health. Further researches are required to elucidate the effect of PAHs exposure on these individuals' health status.

Health risks of inhalation exposure to BTEX in a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Middle East city: Shiraz, Iran

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, known as BTEX, adversely affect human health. This study aimed to measure BTEX concentration and assess the health risk through inhalation exposure to these compounds in a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The ambient air samples were collected using the active sampling method in summer and winter. Sampling sites were close to wastewater treatment units, including bar screen & grit chamber (Site-1), aeration tank & secondary clarifiers (Site-2), anaerobic sludge digester (Site-3), and office & control building (Site-4). Results indicate that the mean levels of benzene and toluene in winter were higher than in summer. The levels of benzene and toluene were below the occupational exposure levels of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The carcinogenic risk (CR) and hazard quotient (HQ) were assessed using the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) method, and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) was applied to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivity analysis. The CRs for all sampling sites were below the U.S.EPA threshold limit (1.0 × 10^-4). The HQ values for benzene nearby Site-2 were above 1.0, indicating inhalation exposure could pose a health hazard. Besides, the HQ results for exposure to toluene in all sampling sites were less than 1.0. The sensitivity analysis had shown that the risk determinant for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk was exposure time, followed by concentration.

Health risk assessment of exposure to atrazine in the soil of Shiraz farmlands, Iran

Atrazine-contaminated soils can pose a carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risk through different routes for exposed people. This study aimed to assess the health risk of exposure to atrazine-contaminated soils through direct ingestion and dermal contact in farmlands nearby Shiraz. Atrazine concentration was measured in 22 selected sites using grid sampling. The carcinogenic and non-cancer risks associated with dermal and ingestion exposure in children and adults were estimated. The lowest and highest atrazine concentrations were in S1 (0.015 mg/kg soil) and S22 (0.55 mg/kg soil). Hazard Index (HI)¹ values ranged from 0.007 to 0.25 for children, and the values ranged from 0.0008 to 0.03 for adults. The mean cancer risk for children and adults was 6.01 × 10^-4 and 7.40 × 10^-5, respectively. The HI value was less than 1 for all sampling sites, indicating that exposure to atrazine does not threaten children and adults. However, the cancer risk exceeds the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US.EPA)² threshold risk limit (10^-6 to 10^-4) in all sampling sites. Therefore, it is recommended that children should avoid playing on atrazine-contaminated farms or soils near anywhere atrazine may have been used.

A process mining approach in big data analysis and modeling decision making risks for measuring environmental health in institutions

This paper aimed to introduce a process-mining framework for measuring the status of environmental health in institutions. The methodology developed a new software-based index namely Institutional Environmental Health Index (IEHI) that was integrated from ontology-based Multi-Criteria Group Decision-Making models based on the principles of fuzzy modeling and consensus evaluation. Fuzzy Ordered Weighting Average (OWA) with the capability of modeling the uncertainties and decision-making risks along with Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) were employed as the computation engine. The performance of the extended index was examined through an applied example on 20 mosques as public institutions. IEHI could analyze big data collected by environmental health investigators and convert them to a single and interpretable number. The index detected the mosques with very unsuitable health conditions that should be in priority of sanitation and suitable ones as well. Due to the capability of defining the type and numbers of criteria and benefitting from specific and user-friendly software namely Group Fuzzy Decision-Making, this index is highly flexible and practical. The methodology could be used for numerating the environmental health conditions in any intended institution or occupation. The proposed index would provide e-health assessment by more efficient analysis of big data and risks that make more realistic decisions in environmental health system.

Determination of chloroform concentration and human exposure assessment in the swimming pool

This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the concentration of the by-products of chlorination in the swimming pool and estimate human health risk for the swimmers of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. In this study, the chloroform concentrations of 16 samples were measured using Gas Chromatography (GC). All the measured concentrations were less than the allowed amount announced by the World Health Organization (WHO). The results of the cancer risk (CR) and hazard index (HI) showed that the major exposure routes were found to be dermal during swimming and the 95 percentile of estimated CR and HI for the male group were 1.38 × 10^-10 and 1.82 × 10^-5 respectively, which is higher than the values of 5.48 × 10^-10 and 2.25 × 10^-5 respectively, for the women group. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the swimming exposure time (ET), and chloroform concentration were the most relevant variables in the health risk model. Therefore, knowledge about the sources of micro-pollutants in swimming pools might help promote the health methods of the pool environment.

The association between the urinary biomarkers of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and risk of metabolic syndromes and blood cell levels in adults in a Middle Eastern area

PURPOSE

Limited studies have been published on the association between the urinary biomarkers of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and risk of Metabolic Syndromes (MetS) and blood cell levels in adults in the Middle East. The present study aimed to evaluate the exposure to PAHs and the distribution of urinary OH-PAH levels in the general population of Shiraz, Iran, as well as, the association between OH-PAHs and the prevalence of MetS and blood cell levels.

METHODS

In this study, 200 participants were randomly selected from the adult population, and their first-morning void urine samples were collected.

RESULTS

The mean concentrations of 1-OHNap, 2-OHNap, 2-OHFlu, 9-OHPhe, and 1-OHP were 639.8, 332.1, 129, 160.3, and 726.9 ng/g creatinine, respectively. The prevalence of MetS was 26% according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) criteria. The results showed that urinary OH-PAHs, especially 1-OHP, were positively and significantly associated with higher waist circumstance (p < 0.001), triglyceride level (p < 0.001), systolic blood pressure (p < 0.001), diastolic blood pressure (p < 0.001), number of white blood cells (p = 0.041) and red blood cells (p < 0.001). It also caused lower levels of High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol (HDL-C). In conclusion, the results emphasized the adverse health effects of PAHs on human health, including obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and decreased number of blood cells.

CONCLUSION

Therefore, in order to identify the PAHs sources and to develop methods for decreasing the amount of emissions to the environment, broader researches are needed.

New perspectives of quercetin and vitamin C effects on fibronectin-binding integrins and chemokine receptors in prostate cancer cell lines

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of two abundant dietary supplements, quercetin and vitamin C on some factors involved in metastasis and proliferation of prostate cancer, which are resistant to conventional chemotherapies in late stages.

BACKGROUND

Bone and brain are two common sites of metastases in prostate cancer, nevertheless the factors involved in their metastatic pathways are not well understood.

METHODS

The effect of quercetin (75µM) and vitamin C (100 µM) on CXCR4, CXCR7 chemokine receptors, α4, α5 and β1 integrins, ki-67 proliferation marker and Vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF was evaluated using Quantitative Reverse Transcription PCR (RT-qPCR).

RESULTS

The effect of quercetin and vitamin C alone was different on PC3 and DU145 prostate cancer cell lines, but sequential combination reduced significantly the expression of CXCR and CXCR7 chemokine receptors, α4, α5 and β1 integrin subunits, VEGF and Ki-67 proliferation markers in PC3 and DU145 cell lines.

CONCLUSION

Our results indicated the beneficial effect of quercetin and vitamin C on prostate cancer cells with different metastatic sites and their differential response to the treatment which in turn may lead us to reach suitable therapeutic outcomes to combat cancer (Fig. 3, Ref. 36).

Photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid from aqueous solutions by Ag3PO4/TiO2 nanoparticles under visible light: kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Between the countless chemical substances applied in agriculture, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) herbicide is considered as a toxic and carcinogenic pollutant which is difficult to remove from water due to its biological and chemical stability and high solubility. The goal of this study was photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-D, using Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ nanoparticles under visible light. The Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ nanoparticles were characterized using XRD, FESEM and EDS analysis to investigate its crystal structure and elemental compounds. The effect of operating parameters such as pH, contact time, catalyst dose, and initial concentration of herbicide on the efficiency of the process was studied. Increasing the pH and initial concentration of herbicide led to the reduction of the efficiency of removing the herbicide, while increasing contact time and catalyst dose increased the efficiency. The best result (98.4% removal efficiency) was achieved at pH = 3, 1 g/L catalyst dose, 60 min contact time, and 10 mg/L initial concentration of 2,4-D. According to the results, 2,4-D removal efficiency with Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ photocatalyst reached 96.1% from 98.4% after 5 cycles of reaction. The pseudo-first-order kinetics was the best fit for the 2,4-D degradation by Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ with correlation coefficients (R² = 0.9945). The results demonstrated that the photocatalytic process using Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ nanoparticles in the presence of visible light had a relatively good efficiency in removing 2,4-D. Moreover, Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ can be used as a reusable photocatalyst for the degradation of such toxins from polluted water and wastewater.

The effects of exogenous application of melatonin on the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the rhizosphere of Festuca

The study aimed to assess the effects of melatonin, a plant growth regulator, on the degradation of phenanthrene (Phe) and pyrene (Py), in the rhizosphere of the Festuca grass. The experiments were divided into the following groups: 1) soil contaminated with Phe and Py, without the Festuca, 2) contaminated soil + Festuca, 3-5), contaminated soil + Festuca + the application of melatonin in three separate doses: 10, 50, or 100 μM. After 90 days, the effects of melatonin supplementation on the degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed by evaluating the rate of PAHs degradation, the expression of genes encoding salicylaldehyde dehydrogenase (SDH) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) enzymes in Pseudomonas putida, as well as by measuring the total activity of dehydrogenase and peroxidase enzymes. Our results have shown that in soil contaminated by 300 mg kg^-1 PAHs, application of melatonin (10, 50, 100 μM), resulted in the following increase in the dehydrogenase and peroxidase activity in all three applied doses (19% and 5.7%), (45.3% and 34.3%), (40.9% and 14.3%), respectively in comparison to the control group. The experiment showed that soil supplementation with melatonin at 50 μM, resulted in the highest removal rate of PAHs. According to our results, melatonin demonstrated a potentially favorable role in enhancing plant biomass, as well as an increase in soil bacterial population, and the activity of antioxidative enzymes in P. putida, causing all tested parameters of the soil and the expression of desired genes to be advantageously altered for the degradation of the chosen PAHs.

Liver Transplantation in Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Experiences from the Shiraz Transplant Center

BACKGROUND

Studies evaluating liver transplantation (LT) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the Middle East have been scarce, mainly due to intricacy of this type of surgery.

OBJECTIVE

In here we report our experiences with LT among patients with HCC cirrhosis.Methods: All patients who underwent LT with primary diagnosis of HCC older than 18 years old, during 2004 to 2019, were initially included in our study.

RESULTS

Overall, 124 patients entered our study, among which majority were males (86.3%). Mean (SD) age of patients was 53.1±10.6 years old. Most common underlying liver diseases were HBV (55.6%) and HCV infections (12.1%). Mean MELD score of patients was 18±5.5. Child-Pugh score of most patients was class B (50%). Mean (SD) duration of hospitalization was 12.1±3.5 days. Patients were followed for a median of 32 (9, 62) months. The most common causes of death were recurrence of HCC (47.7%) and sepsis (34.1%). Median (IQR) duration to recurrence and death were 18 (4, 34) months and 17.5 (5.7, 44.5) months, respectively. One-year survival (89%, 86.4%, and 63.2%, respectively) (p=0.011) and one-year DFS (89%, 86.4%, and 57.9%, respectively) (p=0.001) was significant different between those who were selected based on the Milan, UCSF and extended criteria.

CONCLUSION

Our study provides valuable experiences on LT and HCC from one of the largest LT centers in the world. Accordingly, we found that the Milan criterion provides the best survival compared to the UCSF and our extended criteria for patient selection.

TET2, DNMT3A, IDH1, and JAK2 Mutation in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms in southern Iran

BACKGROUND

Five epigenetic regulator mutations are considered in myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) that have prognostic and therapeutic values.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to evaluate these mutations in MPNs among the Iranian population.

METHODS

We selected 5 mutations in 4 epigenetic regulatory genes [TET2, DNMT3A, IDH1 (rs147001633&rs121913499), and JAK2)] and evaluated 130 patients with MPNs including 78 Philadelphia chromosome negative (49 ETs, 20 PVs, and 9 PMFs) and 52 Philadelphia chromosome-positive patients as well as 51 healthy controls.

RESULTS

Eight patients (6.5%) carried the DNMT3A mutation, 35 (27%) were positive for TET2 mutation and 64 (49.3%) had the JAK2V617F mutation. In the healthy controls, 16 (31.4%) cases had the TET2 mutation (15 Heterozygote + 1 Homozygote) and one had heterozygote JAK2 mutation. There was no statistically significant difference between patient groups for any of these mutations, except for JAK2. The JAK2 mutation rate was 18 (90%), 25 (51%), 7 (77.8%), 14 (26.9%) in polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, primary myelofibrosis, and chronic myelocytic leukemia, respectively. Patients aged 60 and older were more likely to carry the TET2 mutation (23% vs. 39% in younger and older than 60 years old individuals, p=0.025). IDH1 was not detected at all and PV had the highest TET2 mutation 7(35%). Two PMF patients had a history of bone marrow transplantation that were negative for IDH1and DNMT3A and one was positive for TET2 mutation.

CONCLUSION

In the normal Iranian population, the heterozygote form of TET2 mutation is significant, especially in the elderly. No association was found between JAK2 and TET2 mutations. Both of them are more prevalent in the age group of 60 years and older. DNMT3A mutation has a low prevalence and occurs in both positive and negative MPNs.

Assessing BTEX exposure among workers of the second largest natural gas reserve in the world: a biomonitoring approach

Urinary benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) can be used as a reliable biomarker of exposure to these pollutants. This cross-sectional study aimed to employ biomonitoring to assess BTEX exposure among South Pars Gas Field (SPGF) workers in Assaluyeh, Iran. Forty employees who were working on the site were recruited as the case group. Besides, 31 administrative employees were recruited as the control group. Pre-shift and post-shift spot urine samples were collected from the subjects in the case group, while the subjects in the control group provided mid-morning urine samples. Overall, 111 urine samples, including 80 samples from the case group and 31 samples from the controls, were collected. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to determine the urinary levels of BTEX compounds. The median urinary levels of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, and o-xylene in the post-shift samples of the exposed group were 1.24, 2.28, 0.5, 1.32, and 1.5 μg/l, respectively. Significant differences were observed in urinary BTEX levels among smokers and non-smokers in both studied groups (p < 0.05). Accordingly, the median urinary BTEX concentrations in smokers were 2 to 6.5 times higher than the corresponding values in non-smoker subjects. Smoking status was the only predictor of the urinary BTEX concentration. Our findings revealed that refinery workers are exposed to significant levels of BTEX compounds. Considering the health risks associated with BTEX exposure for refinery workers, implementation of suitable control strategies, such as using appropriate personal protective equipment and improving on-site ventilation systems, are recommended reducing their exposure to BTEX via the inhalation.

Attitudes of nurses towards clinical information systems: a systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM

This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates the attitudes of Iranian nurses towards clinical information systems in nursing practice.

BACKGROUND

Nurses are essential in the successful adoption and implementation of clinical information systems.

METHODS

A systematic search was performed in Medline, Embase, Cochrane, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science and Farsi databases, to retrieve relevant studies. The methodological quality of the studies is assessed via the Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal checklist for analytical cross-sectional studies. The random effect model was utilized to analyse the data due to the high heterogeneity in the included studies (n = 17).

RESULTS

Results indicate that clinical information systems impact on at least seven aspects of nursing practice, including documentation, patient safety, quality of treatment, communication, treatment management, nursing tasks and hospital resource management. Results also indicated that one aspect of using clinical information systems in nursing practice is satisfaction with the 'quality and design of clinical information systems', such as ease of use and learning, flexibility and software speed.

CONCLUSION

Clinical information systems can contribute to different aspects of nursing practice. However, their design should improve significantly in order to help nurses perform their professional activities in an efficient and satisfactory manner.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING POLICY

Before the full deployment of clinical information systems, their usability should be tested. In pilot testing, nurses should provide necessary feedback about how well the systems work and improvements needed to meet their professional goals.

Investigating the relationship between synergistic effects and diversity of four widely used agricultural pesticides by using bacterial species in liquid culture medium

Interactive effects of mixtures of pesticides on bacteria are rarely investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the cumulative, synergistic, and antagonistic effects of four widely used agricultural pesticides including deltamethrin, diazinon, chlorpyrifos, and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) on Pseudomonas, Aeromonas, and Bacillus bacteria. The reduction of alamar blue, as an indicator of bacterial activity, was measured using a spectrophotometer at 600-nm wavelength. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 software. The binary mixtures of pesticides had mainly antagonistic and additive effects, but quadruple mixtures of pesticides had synergistic effects on all of the three bacterial species. In the mixtures of pesticides, increasing the number of compounds leads to more synergistic effects.

Changing face of Candida colonization pattern in pediatric patients with hematological malignancy during repeated hospitalizations, results of a prospective observational study (2016-2017) in shiraz, Iran

Background

Surveillance of current changes in the epidemiology of Invasive Fungal Diseases (IFDs) as an important component of the antifungal stewardship programs (ASP), requires careful regular monitoring, especially in high-risk settings such as oncology centers. This study aimed to examine Candida colonization status and corresponding current changes in children with malignancy during repeated admissions and also investigate the possible epidemiological shifts after the implementation of ASP.

Methods

In this prospective observational study, all eligible patients younger than 18 years were recruited during 2016–2017 at Amir Medical Oncology Center (AMOC) in Shiraz, Iran. Totally, 136 patients were enrolled and 482 samples were collected from different sites (oral/nasal discharges, urine and stool). Weekly regular sampling was carried out during hospitalization. Candida colonization status and epidemiological changes were monitored during repeated admissions. Samples were cultivated on Sabouraud Dextrose agar medium and identified by Polymerase Chain Reaction -Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP).

Results

Estimated Candida colonization incidence was 59.9% (82/136) in our patients. Candida colonization was found to be higher in oral cavity and rectum than that in nasal cavity. Among those long-term follow ups and repetitive hospitalizations, a significant number of patients exhibited changes in their colonization patterns (37.7%). Candida colonization did not reveal any significant relationship with age, sex, oncologic diseases and degree of neutropenia. C. albicans (72.0%) was found as the most common Candida species in colonized patients, followed by C. krusei, C. kefyr, C. glabrata and C. parapsilosis.

Conclusion

Given the high incidence of Candida infections in children with cancers, close monitoring of epidemiologic changes is essential for judicious management, based on local surveillance data and improvement of overall quality of care in high risk patients.

Studies on influence of process parameters on simultaneous biodegradation of atrazine and nutrients in aquatic environments by a membrane photobioreactor

A Lab scale algal-bacterial membrane photobioreactor (MPBR) was designed and operated under 12-h light and 12-h dark conditions with a light intensity of 8000lx, in order to investigate the effects of initial concentrations of atrazine, carbon concentration, and hydraulic retention time on the ability of this photobioreactor in simultaneous removal of atrazine and nutrients in the continuous mode. The removal efficiencies of atrazine (ATZ), chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphorus (PO₄^3--P) and nitrogen (NOx) in optimum condition was more than 95%, 99%, 98% and 97% when the maximum removal rates were 9.5 × 10^-3, 99.231, 11.773 and 7.762mg/L-day, respectively. Results showed that the quality of the effluent was reduced by the increase of atrazine concentration. The outcomes on the hydraulic and toxic shocks indicated that the system has a relatively good resistance to the shocks and can return to the stable conditions. Microalgae showed a great deal of interest and capability in cultivating and attaching to the surface of the membrane and bioreactor, and the total biomass accumulated in the system was greater than 6g/L. The kinetic coefficients of atrazine removal were also studied using various kinetic models. The maximum atrazine removal rate was determined by the modified Stover-Kincannon model. The results approved the ability of the MPBR reactor in wastewater treatment and microalgae cultivation and growth. The decline of atrazine concentration in this system could be attributed to the algal-bacterial symbiosis and co-metabolism process. Accordingly, the MPBR reactor is a practical, simple, economical and therefore suitable process for simultaneous biodegradation of chlorinated organic compounds and nutrients removal from aquatic environments.

Data on the trend of corrosivity and scale formation potential of Shiraz groundwater drinking water resources during 2001-2007

The aim of this study was to evaluate the corrosivity and scale formation potential of groundwater drinking water resources for the time period of 2001 to 2007 in Shiraz, Iran. Chemical parameters including total alkalinity, EC, pH, temperature, and TDS of ground water resources were analyzed. Langelier saturation indices (LSI) and Ryznar stability indices (RSI) were utilized to determine the potential for corrosivity and scale formation. The data showed that Shiraz groundwater potable water resources tended more likely towards the scale formation potential.

Direct red 81 adsorption on iron filings from aqueous solutions; kinetic and isotherm studies

Direct Red 81 (DR-81) dye with a very high water solubility is widely used in many industries particularly textile industries. This study aimed to evaluate the practicability of using iron filings for the adsorption of DR-81 dye from the aqueous solutions. The effects of pH, adsorbent dose, initial DR-81 dye concentration, and adsorption time on adsorption process were also evaluated. The maximum of adsorption efficiency of DR-81 dye achieved in the optimum pH: 3, adsorbent dose: 2.5 g/L, contact time: 30 min, and initial dye concentration: 50 mg/L. The dye adsorption efficiency is increased by increasing the adsorbent dose and adsorption time. The kinetic and isotherm studies indicated that the adsorption process obeys a pseudo-first-order and Langmuir isotherm models. The experimental studies indicated that iron filings had the potential to act as an alternative adsorbent to remove the DR-81 dye from an aqueous solution.

Comparison of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Various Compartments of Human Adipose Tissue and Tunica Adventitia Layer of the Arteries Subsequent to Organ Donation

BACKGROUND

Mesenchymal stem cells are one of the most interesting cell sources used in regenerative medicine.

OBJECTIVE

In the present study, we isolated and characterized the mesenchymal stem cells from various compartments of human adipose tissue and tunica adventitia layer of the arteries.

METHODS

Tissue explant culture was done from various compartments of the human adipose tissue and tunica adventitia layer of the arteries, including adipose tissue far from the vessels, perivascular tissues that are completely attached to the vessels, and tunica adventitia layer of the arteries. After the cell culture, characterization of the cells was determined at 3^rd-5^th passages. Flow cytometry was performed for antigen expression analysis of CD34, CD45, CD44, CD90, CD29, CD73, and CD105. For the evaluation of cell differentiation potential, adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation was conducted under appropriate protocols.

RESULTS

The cells were positive for CD44, CD90, CD29, and CD73 and negative for CD34, CD45, and CD105. Adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation potentials were different among the cells from various compartments. The cells derived from perivascular tissue demonstrated better adipogenic and osteogenic differentiation.

CONCLUSION

It is essential to characterize the cells from different tissues and compartments for different purposes in regenerative medicine.

Root structural changes of two remediator plants as the first defective barrier against industrial pollution, and their hyperaccumulation ability

In the present day, plants are increasingly being utilized to safeguard the environment. In this study, we used Salsola crassa M. B. and Suaeda maritima L. Dumort for phytoremediation of water contaminated with heavy metals and simultaneous examination of the effect of industrial pollution on their root structures. After irrigation of a treatment group with wastewater and a control group with fresh water for 3 months, we fixed the root parts in the FAA fixator for developmental study, and measured the concentrations of Co, Ni, Zn, As, Cu, and Pb in the roots, shoots, soil, and irrigating water. The plants irrigated with wastewater showed significant accumulation of heavy metals in the roots and some translocation of heavy metals from the roots to the shoots. We also performed an experiment with two 0.3 m³ pools to more closely study the feasibility of these plants for filtering water of contaminants, including mineral compounds, and altering its chemical characteristics. In our anatomical studies, the cells of the treatment roots showed irregularities and abnormal appearances in all tissue layers. The diameter and area of the xylem and the size of the cortical parenchyma have increased in the treatment plants of both species, confirmed by Stereolite software. Phytoremediation studies indicated that S. crassa accumulated As, Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, and Ni, and S. maritima accumulated As, Co, Zn, and Cu. S. crassa accumulated more heavy metals in its roots, whereas S. maritima accumulated more in its shoots. The biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand were also significantly reduced in the wastewater passed through pools with S. crassa. Our results indicate that both genera are hyperaccumulators of heavy metals and therefore hold promise for industrial wastewater treatment, especially the absorption of As.

The Effects of Cold Preservation Solutions Supplemented with UDCA and α-Lipoic Acid on the Viability and Function of Isolated Human Hepatocytes

BACKGROUND

Liver transplantation is the only treatment for end-stage and genetic liver diseases. The main burden of this treatment is the shortage of both living and cadaveric liver donors. An alternative treatment is using liver cell transplantation, which can be obtained from unused livers for transplantation. These hepatocytes should be kept ready in viable and functional situation in a frozen state to be instantly used when they would be needed. In our previous experience, we had isolated hepatocytes from unused livers.

OBJECTIVE

To find a preserving solution for increasing viability and function of the isolated hepatocytes that are stored to be transplanted.

METHODS

9 cadaveric donor livers, which were not used for transplantation due to various causes such as severe steatosis, were selected to isolate hepatocytes. Various cold storage solutions were tried to find the best temperature for more viability and functionality for preservation of hepatocytes. University of Wisconsin (UW) solution and Williams E media were used as control media. 2 anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative solutions, i.e., α-lipoic acid and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), were used as cold preservatives solutions. The numbers of viable hepatocytes were estimated by trypan blue method; the functionality was assessed by the cells ability to produce urea.

RESULTS

The highest number of viable and functional hepatocytes was obtained from freshly isolated cells. However, after preservation, the number of these viable hepatocytes and their functionality were not significantly different in cold storage solutions comparing to the control media used. Functionality of the isolated hepatocytes stored in UW with and without UCDA solution was similar to freshly isolated hepatocytes.

CONCLUSION

Preservatives with anti-apoptotic and antioxidant activity could not increase the number of viable hepatocytes. Functionality of cold storing hepatocytes could be preserved similar to freshly isolated hepatocytes by UW solution with and without UCDA.

Concentration and type of bioaerosols before and after conventional disinfection and sterilization procedures inside hospital operating rooms

Operating rooms (ORs) in hospitals are sensitive wards because patients can get infections. This work aimed to characterize the type and concentration of bioaerosols in nine ORs of an educational hospital before and after sterilization and disinfection. During 2017, fungal samples were incubated at 25-28 °C for 3-7 days and bacterial samples at 37 °C for 24-48 h. The study results showed that the concentrations of fungi before cleaning procedures (for both of disinfection and sterilization) were limited from 4.83 to 18.40 CFU/m3 and after cleaning procedures ranged from 1.90 to 8.90 CFU/m3. In addition, the concentrations of bacteria before cleaning procedures were limited 14.65-167.40 CFU/m3 and after cleaning procedures ranged from 9.50 to 38.40 CFU/m3. The difference between the mean concentrations of airborne bioaerosols before and after sterilization was significantly different than the suggested value of 30 CFU/m3 (p ≤ 0.05). The bacterial concentration was higher than the recommended value (30 CFU/m3) in 41% of the ORs. The main fungal species identified in the indoor air of ORs (before vs. after sterilization) were A. fumigatus (25.6 vs. 18.3%), A. Niger (11.6 vs. 5.8%), Penicillium spp. (5.5 vs. 3.3%), Alternaria spp. (2.8 vs. 0.7%), Fusarium spp. (9.7 vs. 3.7%), Mucor spp. (15 vs. 12.7%), Cephalotrichum spp. (1.7 vs. 0.8%), A. Flavus (24.6 vs. 18.5%), Cladosporium spp. (2.6 vs. 0.8%), and Trichoderma spp. (0 vs. 0.9%). The growth of biological species even after sterilization and disinfection likely resulted from factors including poor ventilation, sweeping of OR floors, inadequate HVAC filtration, high humidity, and also lack of optimum management of infectious waste after surgery. Designing well-constructed ventilation and air-conditioning systems, replacing HEPA filters, implementing more stringent, frequent, and comprehensive disinfection procedures, and controlling temperature and humidity can help decrease bioaerosols in ORs.

Data on heavy metal concentration in common carp fish consumed in Shiraz, Iran

Food contamination by heavy metals can lead to the accumulation of these elements in the body of consumers and the contraction of diseases. Accordingly, heavy metal concentration in common carp fishes consumed in Shiraz, Iran was determined in the present study. The mean concentrations of Pb, Cd, Zn, and Cu were 0.23, 0.07, 0.47, and 0.59 mg/kg (dry weight), respectively. The average concentration of heavy metals in the muscle of common carps consumed in Shiraz was less than the permissible standard of the WHO and FAO. The estimated weekly intake (EWI) of the studied metals was below the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI). The maximum and minimum relative risk (RR) equaled 48.93 and 0.55% of the total risk for Cd and Zn, respectively.

Seasonal Variation in Culturable Bioaerosols in a Wastewater Treatment Plant

Bioaerosols produced from Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) can pose health risks to plant workers and nearby inhabitants. There is a gap in air quality data for WWTPs in developing countries. The present study aimed to measure airborne bacterial and fungal concentrations in a WWTP in southwestern Iran between September 2015 and May 2016. Active sampling was conducted around operational units, and a total of 600 bacterial and fungal samples were collected. Spatial and seasonal comparisons were made. The highest average concentrations of culturable bacterial aerosol at seasonally dependent locations were, in decreasing order, 2581 ± 401 and 1952 ± 390 CFU m^-3 for the selector and aeration tanks, respectively, in autumn; 1363 ± 299 CFU m^-3 for the aeration tank in winter; and 1738 ± 350 CFU m^-3 for the screw pump in spring. Furthermore, the predominant genera of airborne fungi isolated from the air of the WWTP in all three seasons were Cephalotrichum spp., Alternaria spp., Penicillium spp., Monilia spp., and Aspergillus spp. The results of this work emphasize the necessity of controlling WWTP workers' exposure to bioaerosols when bacteria and fungi become aerosolized during aeration.

A solution for enhancement of transient performance in nonlinear adaptive control: Optimal adaptive reset based on barrier Lyapunov function

In this paper, an adaptive controller based on barrier Lyapunov function combined with an optimal reset rule is devised in order to improve the transient performance of nonlinear adaptive control. A novel reset rule is designed such that the estimated parameters of the adaptive controller jump to the optimal values in a way that optimizes a cost function representing the transient performance index. It is proved that asymptotic tracking is achieved and the output remains in a desired bound by ensuring boundedness of the barrier Lyapunov function. Besides, the convergence rate is increased by resetting the estimated parameters to optimal values. A regularly referred example is simulated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the results are compared with the existing investigations.

Intrathecal Autologous Bone Marrow-Derived Hematopoietic Stem Cell Therapy in Neurological Diseases

BACKGROUND

Cellular transplantation is a promising treatment strategy for neurological diseases.

OBJECTIVE

To report the results of intrathecal hematopoietic stem cell therapy in different neurological diseases in the past 6 years in a single center.

METHODS

From October 2011 to September 2018, 220 patients with various neurological diseases were transplanted intrathecally by their bone marrow stem cells. To have a longer follow up, we only reported the first 80 patients, transplanted up to July 2015-10 patients had spinal cord injuries and paralysis, 12 had advanced Parkinson's disease, 28 had cerebral palsy, 7 had hypoxic brain damage, 2 had autism, 4 had multiple sclerosis, 5 had progressive cerebellar atrophy, and 12 had other neurological diseases. The patients were admitted to the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. On the first day, 50-200 (median 100) mL bone marrow was aspirated from the patients' posterior iliac crests, mixed with 120 mL culture media (RPMI), and 12 mL heparin. The samples were then transferred to immunology lab in cold box. Mononuclear cells (MNCs) were separated by a Ficoll-Hypaque gradient, washed, and suspended in ringers. Cell viability was assessed with trypan blue viability test. Transplantation was performed 3-4 hours after bone marrow collection. 5-10 mL of the cerebrospinal fluids were aspirated and about 20 mL MNCs (containing stem cells) in ringers were injected intrathecally (IT). The patients were laid down on their back for 4-5 hours. The median number of MNCs was 4×10⁷ (range 1-450×10⁷). The median viability of the cells was 90% (range 60%-98%). The patients received intravenous ceftriaxone every 12 hours and were discharged from the hospital few days after autologous stem cell therapy.

RESULTS

We noted clinical improvements in 9 of 12 patients with Parkinson's disease, 20 of 28 patients with cerebral palsy, 6 of 7 patients with hypoxic brain damage, 2 of 4 patients with multiple sclerosis, and 4 of 5 patients with cerebellar atrophy. The improvements were noted after 2-4 weeks of cell therapy. There were no improvements in patients with spinal cord injury and complete paralysis and those with autism. There were variable improvements in other patients treated.

CONCLUSION

Most patients with advanced Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, hypoxic brain damage, progressive cerebellar atrophy, and kernicterus neuropathy reported clinical effects of this safe intervention resulting in better functioning and an increased quality of life.

Characterisation and potential source identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in atmospheric particles (PM10) from urban and suburban residential areas in Shiraz, Iran

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a generally hazardous class of organic compounds that are identified as toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic, and are considered to be a concern for human health because of their potential for causing adverse health effects. The present study aims to determine the atmospheric concentration and potential sources of particulate-bound PAHs in urban and suburban atmospheric particulate matter (PM10) in Shiraz, Iran. Ambient air samples were collected from urban and suburban areas using a SKC sampling pump equipped with a size-selective air intake during the spring of 2015. The mean PM10 concentration at the urban station (62.73 ± 23.38 μg m^-3) was higher than that at the suburban station (60.88 ± 31.03 μg m^-3). The mean (±SD) concentrations of the 16 total PAHs in the particulate phase were 19.28 ± 7.48 ng m^-3and 17.80 ± 9.17 ng m^-3 at the urban and suburban stations, respectively. Among different types of PAHs, phenanthrene had the highest concentration in both stations. Various diagnostic ratios have been suggested, which were used in this study for identification of PAHs' sources. The results of these diagnostics showed that in Shiraz, the most dominant sources of PAHs were traffic emissions, especially vehicle emissions and petroleum automobiles emissions.

The effects of air pollutants on the mortality rate of lung cancer and leukemia

World Health Organization classifies air pollution as the first cause of human cancer. The present study investigated impact of air pollutants on the mortality rates of lung cancer and leukemia in Shiraz, one of the largests cities of Iran. This cross‑sectional (longitudinal) study was carried out in Shiraz. Data on six main pollutants, CO, SO2, O3, NO2, PM10 and PM2.5, were collected from Fars Environmental Protection Agency for 3,001 days starting from 1 January, 2005. Also, measures of climatic factors (temperature, humidity, and air pressure) were obtained from Shiraz Meteorological Organization. Finally, data related to number of deaths due to lung and blood cancers (leukemia) were gathered from Shiraz University Hospital. Relationship between variations of pollutant concentrations and cancers in lung and blood was investigated using statistical software R and MiniTab to perform time series analysis. Results of the present study revealed that the mortality rate of leukemia had a direct significant correlation with concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide in the air (P<0.05). Therefore, special attention should be paid to sources of these pollutants and we need better management to decrease air pollutant concentrations through, e.g., using clean energy respect to fossil fuels, better management of urban traffic planning, and the improvement of public transport service and car sharing.

Photocatalytic degradation of atrazine herbicide with Illuminated Fe+3-TiO2 Nanoparticles

BACKGROUND

Atrazine is a herbicide that is widely used to control broadleaf and grassy weeds for growing many crops especially in maize production. It is a frequently detected herbicide in many groundwater resources. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using ultraviolet radiation UV and fortified nanoparticles of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) doped with trivalent iron to remove atrazine from aqueous phase and determin the removal efficiency under the optimal conditions.

RESULTS

The results of this study demonstrated that the maximum atrazine removal rate was at pH = 11 in the presence of Fe^{+ 3}-TiO₂ catalyst =25 mg/L and the initial concentration of atrazine equal to 10 mg/L. As the reaction time increased, the removal rate of herbicide increased as well. Atrazine removal rate was enhanced by the effect of UV radiation on catalyst activation in Fe⁺³-TiO₂/UV process. It was also revealed that pH has no significant effect on atrazine removal efficiency (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Based on the data obtained in this study, atrazine removal efficiency was increased by increasing pH, initial atrazine concentration, catalyst, and contact time. The results also showed Fe⁺³-TiO₂/UV process was an appropriate method to reduce atrazine in contaminated water resources. In conclusion, Fe⁺³-TiO₂/UV process may enhance the rate of atrazine reduction in highly polluted water resources (more than 99%).
