Mixed-Dimensional van der Waals Heterostructure (2D ReS2/0D MoS2 Quantum Dots)-Based Broad Spectral Range with Ultrahigh-Responsive Photodetector

The remarkable properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials have led to significant advancements in photodetection and optoelectronics research. Currently, there are many successful methods that are employed to improve the responsivity of photodetectors, but the limited spectral range of the device remains a limitation. This work demonstrates the development of a mixed-dimensional (2D/0D) hybrid photodetector device fabricated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown monolayer ReS2 and solution-processed MoS2 quantum dots (QDs). The mixed dimensionality of 2D (ReS2) and zero-dimensional (0D) MoS2 QDs assist in improving the spectral range of the device [ultraviolet (360 nm) to near-infrared (780 nm)]. Further, due to the work function difference between ReS2 and MoS2 QDs, the built-in electric field across the mixed-dimensional interface promotes effective charge separation and migration, resulting in improved responsivities of the device. The calculated responsivities of the fabricated photodetector are 5.4 × 102, 3.3 × 102, and 2.6 × 102 A/W when subjected to visible, UV, and NIR light illumination, which is remarkable when compared to the existing reports on broadband photodetection. The mixed-dimensionality heterostructure coupled with contact engineering paves the way for highly responsive broadband photodetectors for potential applications in security, healthcare, etc.

Study of High-Transverse-Momentum Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Vector Boson in the qqbb Final State with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter presents the first study of Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson (V=W or Z) in the fully hadronic qqbb final state using data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137  fb^{-1}. The vector bosons and Higgs bosons are each reconstructed as large-radius jets and tagged using jet substructure techniques. Dedicated tagging algorithms exploiting b-tagging properties are used to identify jets consistent with Higgs bosons decaying into bb[over ¯]. Dominant backgrounds from multijet production are determined directly from the data, and a likelihood fit to the jet mass distribution of Higgs boson candidates is used to extract the number of signal events. The VH production cross section is measured inclusively and differentially in several ranges of Higgs boson transverse momentum: 250-450, 450-650, and greater than 650 GeV. The inclusive signal yield relative to the standard model expectation is observed to be μ=1.4_{-0.9}^{+1.0} and the corresponding cross section is 3.1±1.3(stat)_{-1.4}^{+1.8}(syst)  pb.

Measurement of the Centrality Dependence of the Dijet Yield in p+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

ATLAS measured the centrality dependence of the dijet yield using 165  nb^{-1} of p+Pb data collected at sqrt[s_{NN}]=8.16  TeV in 2016. The event centrality, which reflects the p+Pb impact parameter, is characterized by the total transverse energy registered in the Pb-going side of the forward calorimeter. The central-to-peripheral ratio of the scaled dijet yields, R_{CP}, is evaluated, and the results are presented as a function of variables that reflect the kinematics of the initial hard parton scattering process. The R_{CP} shows a scaling with the Bjorken x of the parton originating from the proton, x_{p}, while no such trend is observed as a function of x_{Pb}. This analysis provides unique input to understanding the role of small proton spatial configurations in p+Pb collisions by covering parton momentum fractions from the valence region down to x_{p}∼10^{-3} and x_{Pb}∼4×10^{-4}.

Search for New Phenomena in Two-Body Invariant Mass Distributions Using Unsupervised Machine Learning for Anomaly Detection at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

Searches for new resonances are performed using an unsupervised anomaly-detection technique. Events with at least one electron or muon are selected from 140  fb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded by ATLAS at the Large Hadron Collider. The approach involves training an autoencoder on data, and subsequently defining anomalous regions based on the reconstruction loss of the decoder. Studies focus on nine invariant mass spectra that contain pairs of objects consisting of one light jet or b jet and either one lepton (e,μ), photon, or second light jet or b jet in the anomalous regions. No significant deviations from the background hypotheses are observed. Limits on contributions from generic Gaussian signals with various widths of the resonance mass are obtained for nine invariant masses in the anomalous regions.

"They Protect us as if they were our Mom" Masking Attitudes from Freelist Survey Data and Qualitative Interviews in San Diego School Communities

BACKGROUND

Despite being disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 due to a lack of structural support, marginalized communities have been largely ignored in the politically polarized debate over school masking. In response to this, we sought to explore masking attitudes by centering the voices of parents and children at historically marginalized, predominantly Hispanic schools in southern California.

METHODS

We conducted a mixed-methods study with parents and children attending 26 low-income predominantly Hispanic-serving elementary schools. A random sample of parents was asked to provide a freelist of words they associate with masking. A subset of parents with children aged 4-6 was recruited from these surveys to participate in parent-child interviews (PCI). We calculated Smith's salience index for all unique items, stratifying by language (English/Spanish). Item salience guided PCI thematic analysis for additional context and meaning.

RESULTS

648 participants provided 1118 unique freelist items in English and Spanish. 19 parent-child pairs were interviewed, 11 in Spanish and 8 in English. The most salient words were "safety"(0.37), "protection"(0.12), "prevention"(0.05), "health"(0.04), "good"(0.03), "can't breathe"(0.03), "necessary"(0.02), "care"(0.02), "precaution"(0.02), and "unnecessary"(0.02). Spanish speakers had a more favorable view of masking than English speakers, particularly regarding "protection" (0.20 vs 0.08) and "prevention" (0.10 vs 0.02).

DISCUSSION

Masking is an affordable individual-level risk mitigation that protects the communities that have inequitably shouldered the burdens of the COVID-19 pandemic. We recommend that policymakers prioritize the views of those most impacted when deciding on risk mitigation policies like school masking.

Observation of WZγ Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WZγ production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1±1.2  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The WZγ production cross section, with both the W and Z bosons decaying leptonically, pp→WZγ→ℓ^{'}^{±}νℓ^{+}ℓ^{-}γ (ℓ^{(^{'})}=e, μ), is measured in a fiducial phase-space region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01±0.30(stat)±0.16(syst)  fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50±0.06  fb. The observed significance of the WZγ signal is 6.3σ, compared with an expected significance of 5.0σ.

Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass from the H→γγ and H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ Decay Channels with the ATLAS Detector Using sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV pp Collision Data

A measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson combining the H→ZZ^{*}→4ℓ and H→γγ decay channels is presented. The result is based on 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC run 2 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV combined with the run 1 ATLAS mass measurement, performed at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding a Higgs boson mass of 125.11±0.09(stat)±0.06(syst)=125.11±0.11  GeV. This corresponds to a 0.09% precision achieved on this fundamental parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics.

Search for Dark Photons in Rare Z Boson Decays with the ATLAS Detector

A search for events with a dark photon produced in association with a dark Higgs boson via rare decays of the standard model Z boson is presented, using 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The dark boson decays into a pair of dark photons, and at least two of the three dark photons must each decay into a pair of electrons or muons, resulting in at least two same-flavor opposite-charge lepton pairs in the final state. The data are found to be consistent with the background prediction, and upper limits are set on the dark photon's coupling to the dark Higgs boson times the kinetic mixing between the standard model photon and the dark photon, α_{D}ϵ^{2}, in the dark photon mass range of [5, 40] GeV except for the ϒ mass window [8.8, 11.1] GeV. This search explores new parameter space not previously excluded by other experiments.

Observation of Single-Top-Quark Production in Association with a Photon Using the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139  fb^{-1} of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688±23(stat) _{-71}^{+75}(syst)  fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515_{-42}^{+36}  fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Measurement of Suppression of Large-Radius Jets and Its Dependence on Substructure in Pb+Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This letter presents a measurement of the nuclear modification factor of large-radius jets in sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV Pb+Pb collisions by the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed using 1.72  nb^{-1} and 257  pb^{-1} of Pb+Pb and pp data, respectively. Measurement of the Sensitivity of Two-Particle Correlations in pp Collisions to the Presence of Hard Scatterings

A key open question in the study of multiparticle production in high-energy pp collisions is the relationship between the "ridge"-i.e., the observed azimuthal correlations between particles in the underlying event that extend over all rapidities-and hard or semihard scattering processes. In particular, it is not known whether jets or their soft fragments are correlated with particles in the underlying event. To address this question, two-particle correlations are measured in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=13  TeV using data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, with an integrated luminosity of 15.8  pb^{-1}, in two different configurations. In the first case, charged particles associated with jets are excluded from the correlation analysis, while in the second case, correlations are measured between particles within jets and charged particles from the underlying event. Second-order flow coefficients, v_{2}, are presented as a function of event multiplicity and transverse momentum. These measurements show that excluding particles associated with jets does not affect the measured correlations. Moreover, particles associated with jets do not exhibit any significant azimuthal correlations with the underlying event, ruling out hard processes contributing to the ridge.

Observation of an Excess of Dicharmonium Events in the Four-Muon Final State with the ATLAS Detector

A search is made for potential ccc[over ¯]c[over ¯] tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140  fb^{-1} recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ and J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the J/ψ+ψ(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Observation of the γγ→ττ Process in Pb+Pb Collisions and Constraints on the τ-Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of τ-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb+Pb→Pb(γγ→ττ)Pb and constraints on the τ-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a_{τ}. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44  nb^{-1} of LHC Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a τ-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other τ-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The γγ→ττ process is observed in Pb+Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of μ_{ττ}=1.03_{-0.05}^{+0.06} assuming the standard model value for a_{τ}. To measure a_{τ}, a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from τ-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (γγ→μμ) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. Influence of plasma kinetic energy during the pulsed laser deposition of borophene films on silicon (100)

Developing borophene films with good structural stability on non-metallic substrates to maximize their potential in photosensitivity, gas detection, photothermia, energy storage, and deformation detection, among others has been challenging in recent years. Herein, we succeeded in the pulsed laser deposition of multilayered borophene films on Si (100) with β12 or χ3 bonding by tuning the mean kinetic energy in the plasma during the deposition process. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies confirm β12 and χ3 bonding in the films. Borophene films with β12 bonding were obtained by tuning a high mean kinetic energy in the plasma, while borophene with χ3 bonding required a relatively low mean kinetic energy. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) micrographs revealed a granular and directional growth of the multilayered borophene films following the linear atomic terraces from the (100) silicon substrate. AFM nanofriction was used to access the borophene surfaces and to reveal the pull-off force and friction coefficient of the films where the surface oxide showed a significant contribution. To summarize, we show that it is possible to deposit multilayered borophene thin films with different bondings by tuning the mean kinetic energy during pulsed laser deposition. The characterization of the plasma during borophene deposition accompanies our findings, providing support for the changes in kinetic energy.

Strong Constraints on Jet Quenching in Centrality-Dependent p+Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV from ATLAS

Jet quenching is the process of color-charged partons losing energy via interactions with quark-gluon plasma droplets created in heavy-ion collisions. The collective expansion of such droplets is well described by viscous hydrodynamics. Similar evidence of collectivity is consistently observed in smaller collision systems, including pp and p+Pb collisions. In contrast, while jet quenching is observed in Pb+Pb collisions, no evidence has been found in these small systems to date, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the system created in these collisions. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider has measured the yield of charged hadrons correlated with reconstructed jets in 0.36  nb^{-1} of p+Pb and 3.6  pb^{-1} of pp collisions at 5.02 TeV. The yields of charged hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>0.5  GeV near and opposite in azimuth to jets with p_{T}^{jet}>30 or 60 GeV, and the ratios of these yields between p+Pb and pp collisions, I_{pPb}, are reported. The collision centrality of p+Pb events is categorized by the energy deposited by forward neutrons from the struck nucleus. The I_{pPb} values are consistent with unity within a few percent for hadrons with p_{T}^{ch}>4  GeV at all centralities. These data provide new, strong constraints that preclude almost any parton energy loss in central p+Pb collisions.

Search for Heavy Neutral Leptons in Decays of W Bosons Using a Dilepton Displaced Vertex in sqrt[s]=13 TeV pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for a long-lived, heavy neutral lepton (N) in 139  fb^{-1} of sqrt[s]=13  TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is reported. The N is produced via W→Nμ or W→Ne and decays into two charged leptons and a neutrino, forming a displaced vertex. The N mass is used to discriminate between signal and background. Test of CP Invariance in Higgs Boson Vector-Boson-Fusion Production Using the H→γγ Channel with the ATLAS Detector

A test of CP invariance in Higgs boson production via vector-boson fusion has been performed in the H→γγ channel using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The optimal observable method is used to probe the CP structure of interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons, as described by an effective field theory. No sign of CP violation is observed in the data. Constraints are set on the parameters describing the strength of the CP-odd component in the coupling between the Higgs boson and the electroweak gauge bosons in two effective field theory bases: d[over ˜] in the HISZ basis and c_{HW[over ˜]} in the Warsaw basis. The results presented are the most stringent constraints on CP violation in the coupling between Higgs and weak bosons. The 95% C.L. constraint on d[over ˜] is derived for the first time and the 95% C.L. constraint on c_{HW[over ˜]} has been improved by a factor of 5 compared to the previous measurement.

Molecular and immune signatures, and pathological trajectories of fatal COVID-19 lungs defined by in situ spatial single-cell transcriptome analysis

Despite intensive studies during the last 3 years, the pathology and underlying molecular mechanism of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remain poorly defined. In this study, we investigated the spatial single-cell molecular and cellular features of postmortem COVID-19 lung tissues using in situ sequencing (ISS). We detected 10 414 863 transcripts of 221 genes in whole-slide tissues and segmented them into 1 719 459 cells that were mapped to 18 major parenchymal and immune cell types, all of which were infected by SARS-CoV-2. Compared with the non-COVID-19 control, COVID-19 lungs exhibited reduced alveolar cells (ACs) and increased innate and adaptive immune cells. We also identified 19 differentially expressed genes in both infected and uninfected cells across the tissues, which reflected the altered cellular compositions. Spatial analysis of local infection rates revealed regions with high infection rates that were correlated with high cell densities (HIHD). The HIHD regions expressed high levels of SARS-CoV-2 entry-related factors including ACE2, FURIN, TMPRSS2 and NRP1, and co-localized with organizing pneumonia (OP) and lymphocytic and immune infiltration, which exhibited increased ACs and fibroblasts but decreased vascular endothelial cells and epithelial cells, mirroring the tissue damage and wound healing processes. Sparse nonnegative matrix factorization (SNMF) analysis of niche features identified seven signatures that captured structure and immune niches in COVID-19 tissues. Trajectory inference based on immune niche signatures defined two pathological routes. Trajectory A primarily progressed with increased NK cells and granulocytes, likely reflecting the complication of microbial infections. Trajectory B was marked by increased HIHD and OP, possibly accounting for the increased immune infiltration. The OP regions were marked by high numbers of fibroblasts expressing extremely high levels of COL1A1 and COL1A2. Examination of single-cell RNA-seq data (scRNA-seq) from COVID-19 lung tissues and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) identified similar cell populations consisting mainly of myofibroblasts. Immunofluorescence staining revealed the activation of IL6-STAT3 and TGF-β-SMAD2/3 pathways in these cells, likely mediating the upregulation of COL1A1 and COL1A2 and excessive fibrosis in the lung tissues. Together, this study provides a spatial single-cell atlas of cellular and molecular signatures of fatal COVID-19 lungs, which reveals the complex spatial cellular heterogeneity, organization, and interactions that characterized the COVID-19 lung pathology.

Identification of Molecular Markers of Diabetic Foot Ulcer Severity

Diabetes prevalence estimates in South Texas exceeds national estimates and diagnosed cases are higher among Hispanic adults compared to their non-Hispanic white counterparts. San Antonio, a predominantly Hispanic city reports significantly higher annual rates of diabetic amputations compared to Texas. Late identification of severe foot ulcers minimizes the likelihood of reducing amputation risk. In this study we investigate the use of a deep learning pipeline for single cell transcriptomics to identify key markers for Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) severity and progression that can help prioritize individuals with high-risk of foot ulcer amputation. We observed substantial differences in cell types as well as transcripts of patients classified as non-DFU, DFU healers, DFU non-healers compared to healthy individuals. In particular cell sub-type composition show significant differences in DFU non-healers compared to non-DFU and DFU healers. As an indicator of immune defense, populations of T cells accounted for 5.26% in the non-healer group and decreased to 1.17% in the healer group. To obtain more insights into the molecular markers of severity, we developed a graph convolutional neural network (GCNN) model. We observed that the GCNN model reach a prediction accuracy of the severity of 90.32%. Overall, our study indicates significant differences in the gene expression profiles of inflammatory response and immune cells of non-healer patients. The identification of individuals with high risk of amputations is important to maintain the quality of life and thus has significant social-economic impact.

COVID-19 Alcoholic Cirrhosis and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis Cirrhosis Outcomes among Hospitalized Patients in the United States: Insight from National Inpatient Sample Database

Patients with co-morbidities like cirrhosis are at risk of worse outcome from COVID-19 infection. Given limited prior studies, we evaluated outcomes associated with COVID-19 infection in alcoholic and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis cirrhotic (CC+) versus cirrhotic without COVID-19 (CC−). We performed retrospective analysis of 822,604 patients including 28,610 COVID-19 patients from the National Inpatient Sample database with alcoholic and NASH cirrhosis enrolled between 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020, with univariate and multivariate regression analyses. Primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes was mechanical ventilation, vasopressor use, length of stay, hospitalization expense and predictors of mortality. In-hospital mortality was three time higher in the CC+ group compared to those in the CC− group(18.6% vs. 5.96%, p < 0.001, adjusted odds ratio (OR)3.39 (95% 3.08−3.74 CI). Hospitalization was more likely for underrepresented racial and ethnic groups with COVID-19 and cirrhosis. CC+ group had over twice the rates of mechanical ventilation (19.92% vs. 9.07%, adjusted OR 2.71 2.71 (95% 2.51−2.93 CI)),1.7 times likelihood of receiving vasopressors (4.12% vs. 2.45%, p < 0.001, adjusted OR 1.71 (95% CI 1.46−2.01). COVID-19 is associated with increased mortality in patients with alcoholic and NASH cirrhosis, and patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and COVID-19 have a slightly higher mortality compared to NASH cirrhosis.

TiO2/AgO composites by one step photo reduction technique as electron transport layers (ETL) for dye-sensitized solar cells

Dye-sensitized solar cell's electron transport layer is responsible for transporting photo-generated electrons to the outer circuit. Utilizing localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR), light absorption could be enhanced to a greater degree, which can drive dye molecules to excited state more effectively than far-field light. In this work, TiO₂ nanoparticles were prepared by solvothermal method, and Ag nanoparticles were decorated over TiO₂ surface through photodeposition method. XRD data of the TiO₂ sample exhibits anatase phase and in the Ag nanoparticle decorated TiO₂ sample, peaks corresponding to (111) planes of Ag was observed. UV-Vis absorption analysis of the TiO₂ and Ag decorated TiO₂ samples showed absorption in the UV region for the TiO_2, and the SPR effect was detected for the Ag deposited TiO₂ samples. Ag nanoparticles decorated over TiO₂ was observed to be spherical in shape through the images from transmission electron microscope. Presence of both Ag and AgO in the prepared sample was revealed through the data from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The prepared material was used as photoanodes in the construction of the DSSCs, and their performance was evaluated.

Transformer for Gene Expression Modeling (T-GEM): An Interpretable Deep Learning Model for Gene Expression-Based Phenotype Predictions

Deep learning has been applied in precision oncology to address a variety of gene expression-based phenotype predictions. However, gene expression data’s unique characteristics challenge the computer vision-inspired design of popular Deep Learning (DL) models such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and ask for the need to develop interpretable DL models tailored for transcriptomics study. To address the current challenges in developing an interpretable DL model for modeling gene expression data, we propose a novel interpretable deep learning architecture called T-GEM, or Transformer for Gene Expression Modeling. We provided the detailed T-GEM model for modeling gene–gene interactions and demonstrated its utility for gene expression-based predictions of cancer-related phenotypes, including cancer type prediction and immune cell type classification. We carefully analyzed the learning mechanism of T-GEM and showed that the first layer has broader attention while higher layers focus more on phenotype-related genes. We also showed that T-GEM’s self-attention could capture important biological functions associated with the predicted phenotypes. We further devised a method to extract the regulatory network that T-GEM learns by exploiting the attributions of self-attention weights for classifications and showed that the network hub genes were likely markers for the predicted phenotypes.

Observation of WWW Production in pp Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector

This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using 139  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. Events from WWW production are observed with a significance of 8.0 standard deviations, where the expectation is 5.4 standard deviations. The inclusive WWW production cross section is measured to be 820±100 (stat)±80 (syst)  fb, approximately 2.6 standard deviations from the predicted cross section of 511±18  fb calculated at next-to-leading-order QCD and leading-order electroweak accuracy.

A detailed map of Higgs boson interactions by the ATLAS experiment ten years after the discovery

The standard model of particle physics1-4 describes the known fundamental particles and forces that make up our Universe, with the exception of gravity. One of the central features of the standard model is a field that permeates all of space and interacts with fundamental particles5-9. The quantum excitation of this field, known as the Higgs field, manifests itself as the Higgs boson, the only fundamental particle with no spin. In 2012, a particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson of the standard model was observed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN10,11. Since then, more than 30 times as many Higgs bosons have been recorded by the ATLAS experiment, enabling much more precise measurements and new tests of the theory. Here, on the basis of this larger dataset, we combine an unprecedented number of production and decay processes of the Higgs boson to scrutinize its interactions with elementary particles. Interactions with gluons, photons, and W and Z bosons-the carriers of the strong, electromagnetic and weak forces-are studied in detail. Interactions with three third-generation matter particles (bottom (b) and top (t) quarks, and tau leptons (τ)) are well measured and indications of interactions with a second-generation particle (muons, μ) are emerging. These tests reveal that the Higgs boson discovered ten years ago is remarkably consistent with the predictions of the theory and provide stringent constraints on many models of new phenomena beyond the standard model.

Deep learning tackles single-cell analysis-a survey of deep learning for scRNA-seq analysis

Since its selection as the method of the year in 2013, single-cell technologies have become mature enough to provide answers to complex research questions. With the growth of single-cell profiling technologies, there has also been a significant increase in data collected from single-cell profilings, resulting in computational challenges to process these massive and complicated datasets. To address these challenges, deep learning (DL) is positioned as a competitive alternative for single-cell analyses besides the traditional machine learning approaches. Here, we survey a total of 25 DL algorithms and their applicability for a specific step in the single cell RNA-seq processing pipeline. Specifically, we establish a unified mathematical representation of variational autoencoder, autoencoder, generative adversarial network and supervised DL models, compare the training strategies and loss functions for these models, and relate the loss functions of these models to specific objectives of the data processing step. Such a presentation will allow readers to choose suitable algorithms for their particular objective at each step in the pipeline. We envision that this survey will serve as an important information portal for learning the application of DL for scRNA-seq analysis and inspire innovative uses of DL to address a broader range of new challenges in emerging multi-omics and spatial single-cell sequencing.

ES-ARCNN: Predicting enhancer strength by using data augmentation and residual convolutional neural network

Enhancers are non-coding DNA sequences bound by proteins called transcription factors. They function as distant regulators of gene transcription and participate in the development and maintenance of cell types and tissues. Since experimental validation of enhancers is expensive and time-consuming, many computational methods have been developed to predict enhancers and their strength. However, most of these methods still lack good performance in the prediction of enhancer strength. Here, we present a method to predict Enhancers Strength (i.e., strong and weak) by using Augmented data and Residual Convolutional Neural Network (ES-ARCNN). To train ES-ARCNN, we used two data augmentation tricks (i.e., reverse complement and shift) to previously identified enhancers for enlarging a previously identified dataset of enhancers. We further employed a residual convolutional neural network and trained it using the augmented dataset. Compared with other state-of-the-art methods in the 10-fold cross-validation (CV) test, ES-ARCNN has the best performance with the accuracy of 66.17%, and the tricks of data augmentation can effectively improve the prediction performance. We further tested ES-ARCNN on an independent dataset and obtained 65.5% accuracy, which has more than 4% improvement over the other three existing methods. The results in 10CV and independent tests show that ES-ARCNN can effectively predict the enhancer strength. The transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs) enrichment analysis shows that from the mechanistic perspective, enhancer strength is associated with a higher density of important TFBSs in a tissue. Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and risk of hyperuricemia: a longitudinal analysis of the Health Workers Cohort Study participants in Mexico

BACKGROUND

The elevated consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) in Mexico is an important public health concern. However, the association between SSB consumption and hyperuricemia has been scarcely studied and not well documented.

OBJECTIVES

To prospectively evaluate the association between SSB consumption and risk of hyperuricemia in Mexican adults.

METHODS

A longitudinal analysis was conducted using data from the Health Workers Cohort Study. Participants were followed from 2004 to 2018, with measurements every 6 y. The analysis sample consisted of 1300 adults, aged 18 to 85 y. SSB consumption during the previous year was evaluated through a semiquantitative FFQ. Hyperuricemia was defined as a concentration of uric acid ≥7.0 mg/dL in men and ≥5.7 mg/dL in women. We evaluated the association of interest using 2 methodologies: fixed-effects logistic regression and generalized estimating equations (GEEs). Potential confounders were included in both approaches.

RESULTS

At baseline, median intake of SSBs was 472.1 mL/wk (IQR: 198.8-1416.4 mL/wk), and 233 participants had hyperuricemia. Uric acid was higher in participants with an SSB intake ≥7 servings/wk, compared with those with an intake <1 serving/wk (P < 0.001). Participants who changed from the lowest to the highest category of servings consumption experienced 2.6 increased odds of hyperuricemia (95% CI: 1.27, 5.26). Results from the GEE model indicated the odds of hyperuricemia increased by 44% (OR=1.44; 95% CI: 1.13, 1.84) in the 2-6 servings/wk group, and by 89% (OR=1.89; 95% CI: 1.39, 2.57) in the ≥7 servings/wk categories, compared with the <1 serving/wk category. Diet soft drinks were not associated with hyperuricemia.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that the consumption of SSBs is associated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia in Mexican adults, but diet soft drink consumption is not, which supports the need to strengthen existing recommendations to reduce the intake of SSBs.The Health Workers Cohort Study (HWCS) has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Mexican Social Security Institute (12CEI 09 006 14), and the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico (13CEI 17 007 36).

Association between vitamin D deficiency and common variants of Vitamin D binding protein gene among Mexican Mestizo and indigenous postmenopausal women

PURPOSE

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and polymorphisms in the group-specific component (GC) gene are known to be associated in different populations. However, the effects of such genetic variants may vary across different populations. Thus, the objective of this study was to estimate the association between Vitamin D-Binding Protein (VDBP) haplotypes and VDD in mestizo postmenopausal women and Mexican Amerindian ethnic groups.

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study of 726 postmenopausal Mexican women from the Health Workers Cohort Study (HWCS) and 166 postmenopausal women from the Metabolic Analysis in an Indigenous Sample (MAIS) cohort in Mexico. GC polymorphisms (rs7045 and rs4588) were analyzed by TaqMan probes. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels were measured by Chemiluminescent Microparticle Immuno Assay.

RESULTS

The prevalence of VDD serum 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL was 43.7% in mestizo women and 44.6% in indigenous women. In HWCS, the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs7041 and rs4588 were associated with VDD. In addition, women from the HWCS, carrying the haplotypes GC2/2 and GC1f/2 had higher odds of VDD (OR = 2.83, 95% CI 1.14, 7.02; and OR = 2.30, 95% CI 1.40, 3.78, respectively) compared to women with haplotype 1f/1 s. These associations were not statistically significant in the MAIS cohort.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results show genetic association of the analyzed SNPs and related haplotypes, on the GC gene, with VDD in mestizo Mexican postmenopausal women. Moreover, a high prevalence of VDD with high genetic variability within the country was observed. Our results support the need for national policies for preventing VDD.

Self-assembled monolayer formation of pentamers-like molecules onto FCC(111) surfaces: the case of curcuminoids onto Au(111) surface

The adsorption of rigid straight electrically polarized pentamers over a FCC(111) surface is studied. The model was inspired by the deposition of 2-thiophene molecules over the Au(111) surface, which was previously characterized by experimental techniques and simulated under the frame of the density functional theory. We now obtain and report the charge distribution of the molecule which allows to propose a deposition model followed by Monte Carlo simulations over an ad-hoc lattice gas model. We show that for a certain value of the chemical potential there exists an isotropic-nematic phase transition which can explain the formation of a self-assembled monolayer like the one observed in the transmission electron microscopy images. An order parameter is defined to characterize the transition which presents a step-like behavior at a critical chemical potential value. The possible nature of the nematic transition in conjunction with an ergodicity breakdown is discussed as future work by means of statistical physics techniques.

Brugada Syndrome: Presentation and Management of the Atypical Patient in the Emergent Setting

Introduction

Brugada syndrome is a genetic disorder of the heart’s electrical system that increases a patient’s risk of sudden cardiac death. It is a syndrome most prevalent in Southeast Asians and is found 36 times more commonly in Asians than in Hispanics.

Case Report

We report and discuss a case of a 68-year-old Hispanic male who presented with clinical and electrocardiogram abnormalities consistent with Brugada syndrome.

Discussion

The patient’s age and ethnicity represents an atypical presentation of this rare syndrome and the lack of reported studies in the literature pertaining to these demographics reflect this.

Conclusion

Further studies and characterizations are necessary as manifestations continue to be unearthed. As such, Brugada Syndrome should be considered in the differential diagnosis for a myriad of patient populations.

Zinc Supplementation and Fortification in Mexican Children

BACKGROUND

Zinc is an essential micronutrient for human health. Approximately 1.4% of deaths worldwide are related to zinc deficiency. In Mexico, 33% of children younger than 5 years are zinc deficient.

OBJECTIVE

To give an overview of zinc supplementation and fortification in children younger than 5 years through the analysis of current regulations in Mexico, the availability of these products, and the opinion of Mexican experts in this field.

METHODS

We gave an overview of zinc supplementation and fortification strategies in the Mexican pediatric population by conducting a literature review of Mexican studies and national standards concerning zinc supplementation and fortification. Semistructured interviews were conducted with personnel from the main producers of zinc supplements and fortified products and from social assistance programs in Mexico.

RESULTS

Zinc supplementation in Mexico has been associated with reduction in the duration and incidence of diarrhea. Through interviews with experts, we identified several barriers in achieving adequate zinc consumption such as problems in social assistance programs that distribute zinc-fortified foods, lack of specific dietary recommendations regarding the intake of zinc, lack of regulation of nonpatented zinc supplements, and inconsistencies in public health actions due to political and administrative changes.

CONCLUSION

Despite current regulation and efforts made by social assistance programs, zinc deficiency continues to be a prevalent public health issue. Mexico requires an in-depth analysis of existing barriers and alternatives in order to reduce zinc deficiency.

'Desculturización,' urbanization, and nutrition transition among urban Kichwas Indigenous communities residing in the Andes highlands of Ecuador

BACKGROUND

The nutrition transition continues to affect populations throughout the world. The added impact of market integration and urbanization exacerbates the impact of the nutrition transition upon Indigenous populations worldwide.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to explore the nutritional concerns of the urban Kichwas community residing in the Andes highlands of Ecuador.

STUDY DESIGN

This is a qualitative study.

METHODS

Eight focus groups were conducted with Kichwas men and women in November 2015 in the Imbabura province of the Andes in Ecuador.

DATA ANALYSIS

Applied thematic analysis was used to analyze findings regarding nutrition.

RESULTS

The participants shared concerns regarding increased intake of fast food, poor meal timing, and a shift in the child's food preferences that rejects traditional foods. They attributed these concerns to urbanization resulting from an increase in dual-income households and a loss of cultural identity.

CONCLUSIONS

Synergistic cultural factors are related to nutritional concerns voiced by the urban Kichwas community.

PUBLIC HEALTH IMPLICATIONS

Syndemic theory is a useful interpretive lens regarding nutritional trends within the Kichwas communities as they relate to the increased risk of chronic disease.

P5268Prognostic implications of cardiac magnetic resonance in patient with mid range ejection fraction: can we predict worse outcomes?

Purpose

According to current ESC guidelines, mid-range ejection fraction (mrEF) might represent a separate subgroup of patients with distinct underlying characteristics, prognosis and treatment response. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is the gold standard for measuring volumes, mass and ejection fraction of the heart. We aimed to find long-term prognostic value of various CMR parameters in patients mrEF.

Methods

137 patients with mrEF underwent CMR (1.5T) between 2012 and 2018 and were consecutively included. Volumes, mass and ejection fraction were assessed using short axis SSFP images and the Simpson method (using commercially available software). Myocardial fibrosis was determined by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE). Clinical parameters after a median of 762 (230–1315 days) were recorded. Patients with other significant cardiac affection rather than mrEF were excluded (pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension and significant valve disease). The primary endpoint was defined as a combined outcome of all-cause death or heart failure decompensation requiring in-hospital admission.

Results

Mean age was 63.0±12.4 years. 76.6% were males. Mean left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF) was 45±2.69%. Main aetiologies were ischemic (46%), idiopathic (32.12%), myocarditis (9.5%), tachycardiomyopathy (6.57%) enolic (2.2%) stress cardiomyopathy (0.7%) and others (2.9%).

A combined model for predicting outcomes in patients with mrEF using CMR parameters was obtained. This model was able to predict 32.7% (coefficient of determination, R-squared) of the adverse events (p<0.01). Significant CMR parameters and results are shown on table 1.

Conclusions

In patients with mid-range ejection fraction, RV volumes and ejection fraction, as well as LV mass and LA volume, were significant predictors of worse outcomes in a combined model. If supported by further studies, these findings may help the clinician select the patients with higher risk of complications and in need of a closer follow-up.

Low Serum Vitamin D Concentrations Are Associated with Insulin Resistance in Mexican Children and Adolescents

Previous studies in the Mexican adult population have suggested a relationship between low levels of serum concentrations of serum vitamin D with impaired glucose tolerance, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes, regardless of the presence of obesity. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and the factors linked to insulin resistance. A total of 533 children and adolescents from the "Reference Values of Body Composition in the Pediatric Population of Mexico City" study are assessed. Body composition, dietary, and lifestyle data are obtained. Serum vitamin D, insulin, and glucose are also measured. Associations are tested using multiple linear and logistic regression models. Approximately 90% of children and adolescents in this study have sub-optimal vitamin D levels (<30 ng/mL). An inverse relationship between insulin resistance and serum vitamin D is observed (OR (odds ratios) = 2.9; 95% CI (95% confidence intervals): 1.1, 7.2; p-trend 0.03). Low serum vitamin D levels are associated with insulin resistance in the pediatric population. The present study provides additional evidence for the role of vitamin D in insulin resistance. Our findings suggest the supplementation of vitamin D may be helpful in preventing insulin resistance and subsequent diabetes.

Associations between Consumption of Ultra-Processed Foods and Intake of Nutrients Related to Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases in Mexico

BACKGROUND

Ultra-processed foods are highly palatable and can be consumed anywhere at any time, but typically have a poor nutritional profile. Therefore, their contribution to total energy intake has been proposed as an indicator for studying overall dietary quality.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between the energy contribution from ultra-processed foods and the intake of nutrients related to chronic non-communicable diseases in Mexico.

DESIGN

This study used a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the 2012 Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey.

PARTICIPANTS/SETTING

This study included participants aged 1 year and older (n=10,087) who had completed a 1-day 24-hour recall.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Intake from added sugar (% kcal), total fat (% kcal), saturated fat (% kcal), protein (% kcal), dietary fiber (g/1,000 kcal), and dietary energy density (kcal/g) were measured.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

Multiple linear regression models adjusted for sociodemographic variables were fitted to assess the association between quintiles of energy contribution from ultra-processed foods and nutrient intake.

RESULTS

Mean reported energy contribution from ultra-processed foods to the Mexican population's diet ranged from 4.5% kcal in quintile 1 (Q1) to 64.2% kcal in quintile 5 (Q5). An increased energy contribution from ultra-processed foods was positively associated with intake from added sugar (Q1: 7.4% kcal; Q5: 17.5% kcal), total fat (Q1: 30.6% kcal; Q5: 33.5% kcal) and saturated fat (Q1: 9.3% kcal; Q5: 13.2% kcal), as well as dietary energy density (Q1: 1.4 kcal/g; Q5: 2.0 kcal/g) (P≤0.001); and inversely associated with intake from protein (Q1: 15.1% kcal; Q5: 11.9% kcal) and dietary fiber (Q1: 16.0 g/1,000 kcal; Q5: 8.4 g/1,000 kcal) (P≤0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

In the Mexican population, an increased energy contribution from ultra-processed foods was associated with a lower dietary quality with regard to intake of nutrients related to chronic non-communicable diseases. Future research is needed to identify barriers to eating a variety of unprocessed and minimally processed foods for the Mexican population, as well as effective public health strategies and policies to overcome these barriers.

High Relative Abundance of Lactobacillus reuteri and Fructose Intake are Associated with Adiposity and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Children from Mexico City

In Mexico, 3 of 10 children are overweight. Fructose intake and relative abundance (RA) of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) in the intestinal microbiota are associated with obesity and diabetes in adults, but studies in children are limited. This study evaluates the association between fructose intake and L. reuteri RA with adiposity and cardiometabolic risk markers in Mexican children dietary information, microbiota profiles, adiposity indicators (Body Mass Index, BMI and Waste Circumference, WC), and cardiometabolic markers were analyzed in 1087 children aged 6–12 years. Linear regression and path analysis models were used. High-tertile fructose intake and L. reuteri RA were positively associated with BMI (β_{Tertil 3 vs. Tertil 1}= 0.24 (95% CI, 0.04; 0.44) and β_{T3 vs. T1} = 0.52 (95% CI, 0.32; 0.72)) and WC (β_{T3 vs. T1} = 2.40 (95% CI, 0.93; 3.83) and β_{T3 vs. T1} = 3.40 (95% CI, 1.95; 4.90)), respectively. Also, these factors mediated by adiposity were positively correlated with high triglycerides and insulin concentrations and HOMA-IR (p ≤ 0.03) and negatively associated with HDL-C concentration (p < 0.01). High-tertile fructose intake and L. reuteri RA were directly associated with adiposity and indirectly associated though adiposity with metabolic disorders in children. In conclusion, fructose intake and L. reuteri RA were directly associated with adiposity and indirectly associated with metabolic disorders in children, mediated by adiposity.

Risk and resiliency: the syndemic nature of HIV/AIDS in the indigenous highland communities of Ecuador

OBJECTIVES

This community-based study explores the syndemic nature of HIV/AIDS risk and resilience among Indigenous Kichwa communities in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador. This study elucidates individual and community-level factors that serve to exacerbate HIV/AIDS risk, as they relate to underlying macrolevel, structural forces. Critically, this study also elicited opportunities for community-based opportunities for resiliency from HIV/AIDS.

STUDY DESIGN

Exploratory qualitative study.

METHODS

Guided by syndemic theory, a qualitative study was conducted to explore HIV risk and resilience among Indigenous Kichwa communities in the Northern Andean highlands of Ecuador. Eight focus groups (n = 59) with men and women from two communities were conducted. The data were analyzed using applied thematic analysis techniques.

RESULTS

Identified risk factors for HIV/AIDS centered around the following themes: (1) parents leaving the community for work, (2) alcohol and drug consumption, (3) unprotected sex, and (4) barriers to health care. Identified HIV/AIDS resiliency factors included the preservation of Indigenous culture and family-focused interventions.

CONCLUSIONS

The identified risk factors for HIV/AIDS are interrelated within a complex syndemic relationship. The mutually reinforcing individual-level risk factors of substance abuse and risky sexual behavior coalesce with violence to exacerbate the risk for HIV/AIDS acquisition among Ecuadorian Highland Indigenous communities. Moreover, HIV/AIDS risk prevails in the macrolevel context of disproportionate unemployment among Indigenous peoples and a systematically fragmented healthcare system. It is critical that public health professionals work to revolutionize the systematic discrimination that underpins indigenous health disparities at-large.

Synthesis of salt-stable fluorescent nanoparticles (quantum dots) by polyextremophile halophilic bacteria

Here we report the biological synthesis of CdS fluorescent nanoparticles (Quantum Dots, QDs) by polyextremophile halophilic bacteria isolated from Atacama Salt Flat (Chile), Uyuni Salt Flat (Bolivia) and the Dead Sea (Israel). In particular, a Halobacillus sp. DS2, a strain presenting high resistance to NaCl (3-22%), acidic pH (1-4) and cadmium (CdCl2 MIC: 1,375 mM) was used for QDs biosynthesis studies. Halobacillus sp. synthesize CdS QDs in presence of high NaCl concentrations in a process related with their capacity to generate S2- in these conditions. Biosynthesized QDs were purified, characterized and their stability at different NaCl concentrations determined. Hexagonal nanoparticles with highly defined structures (hexagonal phase), monodisperse size distribution (2-5 nm) and composed by CdS, NaCl and cysteine were determined by TEM, EDX, HRXPS and FTIR. In addition, QDs biosynthesized by Halobacillus sp. DS2 displayed increased tolerance to NaCl when compared to QDs produced chemically or biosynthesized by non-halophilic bacteria. This is the first report of biological synthesis of salt-stable QDs and confirms the potential of using extremophile microorganisms to produce novel nanoparticles. Obtained results constitute a new alternative to improve QDs properties, and as consequence, to increase their industrial and biomedical applications.

Identical and Nonidentical Twins: Risk and Factors Involved in Development of Islet Autoimmunity and Type 1 Diabetes

OBJECTIVE

There are variable reports of risk of concordance for progression to islet autoantibodies and type 1 diabetes in identical twins after one twin is diagnosed. We examined development of positive autoantibodies and type 1 diabetes and the effects of genetic factors and common environment on autoantibody positivity in identical twins, nonidentical twins, and full siblings.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

Subjects from the TrialNet Pathway to Prevention Study (N = 48,026) were screened from 2004 to 2015 for islet autoantibodies (GAD antibody [GADA], insulinoma-associated antigen 2 [IA-2A], and autoantibodies against insulin [IAA]). Of these subjects, 17,226 (157 identical twins, 283 nonidentical twins, and 16,786 full siblings) were followed for autoantibody positivity or type 1 diabetes for a median of 2.1 years.

RESULTS

At screening, identical twins were more likely to have positive GADA, IA-2A, and IAA than nonidentical twins or full siblings (all P < 0.0001). Younger age, male sex, and genetic factors were significant factors for expression of IA-2A, IAA, one or more positive autoantibodies, and two or more positive autoantibodies (all P ≤ 0.03). Initially autoantibody-positive identical twins had a 69% risk of diabetes by 3 years compared with 1.5% for initially autoantibody-negative identical twins. In nonidentical twins, type 1 diabetes risk by 3 years was 72% for initially multiple autoantibody-positive, 13% for single autoantibody-positive, and 0% for initially autoantibody-negative nonidentical twins. Full siblings had a 3-year type 1 diabetes risk of 47% for multiple autoantibody-positive, 12% for single autoantibody-positive, and 0.5% for initially autoantibody-negative subjects.

CONCLUSIONS

Risk of type 1 diabetes at 3 years is high for initially multiple and single autoantibody-positive identical twins and multiple autoantibody-positive nonidentical twins. Genetic predisposition, age, and male sex are significant risk factors for development of positive autoantibodies in twins.

Prevention of low bone mass to achieve high bone density in Mexico: position of the Mexican Association for Bone and Mineral Metabolism

In Mexico, osteoporosis is a public health problem. In this document, the Mexican Association for Bone and Mineral Metabolism defines its position on calcium, vitamin D supplement use, and physical activity as an effective, safe, and cost-effective initiatives to prevent low bone mass.

INTRODUCTION

In Mexico, osteoporosis is a public health problem that is expected to increase in the decades ahead. Generally, modifiable risk factors for bone health are related with lifestyles, especially nutrition and physical activity.

METHODS

In this position paper, the Mexican Association for Bone and Mineral Metabolism (AMMOM, by its acronym in Spanish), which is a multidisciplinary group of researchers, dietitians, epidemiologists, nurses, and physicians who study bone and related tissues and communicate the best strategies for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of bone problems, aims to analyze the association between nutrition and bone health, risk behaviors for low bone mass, and the economic impact that prevention of low bone mass represents for the health care system.

RESULTS

Addressing therapeutic management with pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, we emphasize the important role the patient plays in the doctor-patient relationship, both in the consulting room and in daily life. Furthermore, the AMMOM defines its position on calcium and vitamin D supplement use as an effective, safe, and cost-effective initiative to prevent low bone mass.

CONCLUSIONS

In summary, most research and clinical practice related to osteoporosis have focused on diagnosis and treatment, but general measures for primary prevention based on addressing modifiable risk factors as a public health priority to delay the onset of loss of bone mass have not been considered by Mexican authorities. Consequently, the AMMOM task force also seeks to provide information on concrete actions to prevent low bone mass.
