Variations in proton transfer pathways and energetics on pristine and defect-rich quartz surfaces in water: Insights into the bimodal acidities of quartz

HYPOTHESIS

Understanding the mechanisms of proton transfer on quartz surfaces in water is critical for a range of processes in geochemical, environmental, and materials sciences. The wide range of surface acidities (>9 pKa units) found on the ubiquitous mineral quartz is caused by the structural variations of surface silanol groups. Molecular scale simulations provide essential tools for elucidating the origin of site-specific surface acidities.

SIMULATIONS

We used density-functional tight-binding-based molecular dynamics combined with rare-event metadynamics simulations to probe the mechanisms of deprotonation reactions from ten representative surface silanol groups found on both pristine and defect-rich quartz (101) surfaces with Si vacancies.

FINDINGS

The results show that deprotonation is a highly dynamic process where both the surface hydroxyls and bridging oxygen atoms serve as the proton acceptors, in addition to water. Deprotonation of embedded silanols through intrasurface proton transfer exhibited lower pKa values with less H-bond participation and higher energy barriers, suggesting a new mechanism to explain the bimodal acidity observed on quartz surface. Defect sites, recently shown to comprise a significant portion of the quartz (101) surface, diversify the coordination and local H-bonding environments of the surface silanols, changing both the deprotonation pathways and energetics, leading to a wider range of pKa values (2.4 to 11.5) than that observed on pristine quartz surface (10.4 and 12.1).

Different interfaces for stabilizing liquid-liquid, liquid-gel and gel-gel emulsions: Design, comparison, and challenges

Interfaces play essential roles in the stability and functions of emulsion systems. The quick development of novel emulsion systems (e.g., water-water emulsions, water-oleogel emulsions, hydrogel-oleogel emulsions) has brought great progress in interfacial engineering. These new interfaces, which are different from the traditional water-oil interfaces, and are also different from each other, have widened the applications of food emulsions, and also brought in challenges to stabilize the emulsions. We presented a comprehensive summary of various structured interfaces (stabilized by mixed-layers, multilayers, particles, nanodroplets, microgels etc.), and their characteristics, and designing strategies. We also discussed the applicability of these interfaces in stabilizing liquid-liquid (water-oil, water-water, oil-oil, alcohol-oil, etc.), liquid-gel, and gel-gel emulsion systems. Challenges and future research aspects were also proposed regarding interfacial engineering for different emulsions. Emulsions are interface-dominated materials, and the interfaces have dynamic natures, as the compositions and structures are not constant. Biopolymers, particles, nanodroplets, and microgels differed in their capacity to get absorbed onto the interface, to adjust their structures at the interface, to lower interfacial tension, and to stabilize different emulsions. The interactions between the interface and the bulk phases not only affected the properties of the interface, but also the two phases, leading to different functions of the emulsions. These structured interfaces have been used individually or cooperatively to achieve effective stabilization or better applications of different emulsion systems. However, dynamic changes of the interface during digestion are only poorly understood, and it is still challenging to fully characterize the interfaces.

Broad-spectrum hybrid-driven triple-interface Z-Scheme 1T/2H phase sailboat-like molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)/protonated N-defect nanoporous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets piezo-photocatalyst: Superior degradation and hydrogen evolution

Incorporating piezo-response into photocatalysis holds great promise for eco-friendly strategies in environmental remediation and sustainable energy conversion. Herein, flexible N-defect nanoporous g-C3N4 nanosheets (NPCNs) was prepared via one-step method, then whose surface was protonated. And existed dense 1T/2H phase and vertical interfaces in non-layer-dependent-piezo-response sailboat-like-MoS2 (Sv-MS) formed by in-situ stresses during nucleation and growth by experiments and MD-simulations. Noble-metal-free Z-scheme PC/VM heterojunction with broad-spectrum absorption, enhanced piezo-response and intimate triple-interface was established by electrostatic self-assembly, performing efficient hybrid-driven piezo-photocatalysis. With a systematic modification of morphology, grain size, phase composition, and surface condition of the components, the optimal PC(3.6H)/VM(u2) exhibited high piezo-photocatalytic rates for degradation of organic dyes and antibiotic (RhB (0.565 min-1), MO (0.052 min-1), MB (1.557 min-1), TC (0.062 min-1)) and hydrogen evolution (3528 μmolg-1h-1) under visible-light and ultrasonic-wave, with maintenance under NIR-light (λmax = 1000 nm) attributed to up-conversion effect (RhB: 0.212 min-1, H2: 2355 μmolg-1h-1). Furthermore, the piezo-photocatalytic mechanism was proposed by experiments and DFT-calculations for effective triple-interface Z-Scheme charge migration. This work provides a rational protocol for constructing diverse-energy-triggered, multiple-interfaces and broad-solar-spectrum (UV-Vis-NIR) piezo-photocatalysts in degradation and hydrogen evolution.

Neuron-microelectrode junction induced by an engineered synapse organizer

The conventional microelectrodes for recording neuronal activities do not have innate selectivity to cell type, which is one of the critical limitations for the detailed analysis of neuronal circuits. In this study, we engineered a downsized variant of the artificial synapse organizer based on neurexin1β and a peptide-tag, fabricated gold microelectrodes functionalized with the receptor for the organizer, and performed validation experiments in primary cultured neurons. Successful inductions of synapse-like junctions were detected at the sites of contact between neurons expressing the engineered synapse organizer and functionalized microelectrodes, but not in the negative control experiment in which the electrode functionalization was omitted. Such a molecularly inducible neuron-microelectrode junction could be the basis for the next-generation electrophysiological technique enabling cell type-selective recording.

Dataset on simulated microbond tests using finite element method: Simulation cases about different geometrical influences, material behavior, damage evolution, and element meshes

This data article provides an extensive dataset obtained from finite element (FE) simulations of microbond (MB) tests. The simulations cover a wide range of structural effects and artifacts that influence the results of the MB tests. A total of 432 simulations were performed,taking into account the various factors such as blade geometry and position, plastic behaviour of thermoset and thermoplastic droplets, material properties of the fibres, residual stresses, fracture modes at interfaces, and FE mesh sensitivity analysis. Each FE simulation consists of blade reaction force, blade displacement, fibre displacement, fibre strain and various energy metrics such as interface strain energy, total strain energy, damage energy and plastic dissipation energy. For ease of reference, the individual data files are organised in a systematic naming sequence based on the simulation matrices, detailing the specific abbreviations for each file. A user-friendly interface is also provided to read and visualisethe data from the output files in relation to the simulation matrix. Dsouza et al., 2023)".

Organic-inorganic hybrid interfaces with π-d electron coupling for preventing metal and sulfur leaching toward enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) catalysts with high catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity have been extensively studied, especially Fe and Co-based sulfides. Fe and Co active sites with a strong synergistic effect, which can adjust the electron density distribution and effectively improve the electrocatalytic OER activity. However, TMSs have poor stability in alkaline environment caused by metal ions and sulfur elements are facilitated to dissolve. In this work, TMSs was modified by polyaniline (PANI) to inhibit the precipitation of iron, cobalt, and sulfur elements and enhance its stability under alkaline conditions. Moreover, π-d structure can also be formed by the coating of PANI, which can further adjust its own electronic structure on the basis of stabilizing the TMSs structure, so as to improve the electrochemical performance, rendering them to stably operate at harsh environment for more than 90 h. These findings offer new guidance for improving the electrocatalytic stability of TMSs.

Design of Soft/Hard Interface with High Adhesion Energy and Low Interfacial Thermal Resistance via Regulation of Interfacial Hydrogen Bonding Interaction

Adhesion ability and interfacial thermal transfer capacity at soft/hard interfaces are of critical importance to a wide variety of applications, ranging from electronic packaging and soft electronics to batteries. However, these two properties are difficult to obtain simultaneously due to their conflicting nature at soft/hard interfaces. Herein, we report a polyurethane/silicon interface with both high adhesion energy (13535 J m-2) and low thermal interfacial resistance (0.89 × 10-6 m2 K W-1) by regulating hydrogen interactions at the interface. This is achieved by introducing a soybean-oil-based epoxy cross-linker, which can destroy the hydrogen bonds in polyurethane networks and meanwhile can promote the formation of hydrogen bonds at the polyurethane/silicon interface. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of enhancing adhesion energy and reducing interfacial thermal resistance at soft/hard interfaces, which offers a promising perspective to tailor interfacial properties in various material systems.

[Comparative pathology in oncology-Best practice]

Comparative experimental pathology is a research field at the interface of human and veterinary medicine. It is focused on the comparative study of similarities and differences between spontaneous and experimentally induced diseases in animals (animal models) compared to human diseases. The use of animal models for studying human diseases is an essential component of biomedical research. Interdisciplinary teams with species-specific expertise should collaborate wherever possible and maintain close communication. Mutual openness, cooperation, and willingness to learn form the basis for a fruitful collaboration. Research projects jointly led by or involving both animal and human pathologists make a significant contribution to high-quality biomedical research. Such approaches are promising not only in oncological research, as outlined in this article, but also in other research areas where animal models are regularly used, such as infectiology, neurology, and developmental biology.

Femtoliter oil droplets act as CO2 micropumps for uninterrupted electrochemiluminescence at the water|oil interface

Interfacial effects are well-known to significantly alter chemical reactivity, especially in confined environments, where the surface to volume ratio increases. Here, we observed an inhomogeneity in the electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) intensity decrease over time in a multiphasic system composed of femtoliter water droplets entrapping femtoliter volumes of the 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) continuous phase. In usual electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reactions involving an ECL chromophore and oxalate ([C2O4]2-), the build-up of CO2 diminishes the ECL signal with time because of bubble formation. We hypothesised that relative solubilities of chemical species in these environments play a dramatic role in interfacial reactivity. Water droplets, loaded with the ECL luminophore [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and the coreactant [C2O4]2- were allowed to stochastically collide and adsorb at the surface of a glassy carbon macroelectrode. When water droplets coalesce on the surface, they leave behind femtoliter droplets of the DCE phase (inclusions). We report the surprising finding that the addition of multiple interfaces, due to the presence of continuous phase's femtoliter inclusions, allows sustained ECL over time after successive potential applications at the triple-phase boundary between water droplet|electrode|DCE inclusion. When femtoliter droplets of DCE form on the electrode surface, bright rings of ECL are observed during the simultaneous oxidation of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and [C2O4]2-. Control experiments and finite element modelling allowed us to propose that these rings arise because CO2 that is generated near the 1,2-dichloroethane droplet partitions in due to relative solubility of CO2 in 1,2-dichloroethane and builds up and/or is expelled at the top of the droplet. The small droplets of the DCE phase act as micropumps, pumping away carbon dioxide from the interface. These results highlight the unexpected point that confined microenvironments and their geometry can tune chemical reactions of industrial importance and fundamental interest.

Explosive weld joint characteristics of Copper-Tantalum via simulation

This report aims to examine the effects of impact velocity, impact depth, and impact orientation on the Cu-Ta weld joint of the explosive welding process via MD simulation. The findings indicate that the residual shear stress in the welded block mostly increases as the impact velocity rises. The bottom Ta block is more severely distorted than the higher Cu block due to the impact direction. During the tensile test, three stress zones can be identified including the low-stress Cu block, the high-stress Ta block, and the medium-stress weld joint in the middle of the samples. The weld joint position is lower than the median line of the welded block. The Cu-Ta welded block with 500 m/s impact velocities had the highest ultimate tensile strength (UTS) value of 6.49 GPa. With increasing impact depth, the atomic strain level, residual shear stress, and weld joint dimensions all noticeably increase. The Cu-Ta welded block with an impact depth of 7.5 Å has the greatest UTS values, measuring 11.65 GPa, because of its well-crystal structure. Changing the impact orientation does not result in a dramatic change in atomic strain. Orientation (001) vs (001) has the highest strain and stress rates. With an impact orientation of (110) vs. (111), the Cu-Ta welded block gets the highest UTS value of 8.03 GPa compared to other orientations.

Interface-Compatible Gel-Polymer Electrolyte Enabled by NaF-Solubility-Regulation toward All-Climate Solid-State Sodium Batteries

Gel-polymer electrolyte (GPE) is a pragmatic choice for high-safety sodium batteries but still plagued by interfacial compatibility with both cathode and anode simultaneously. Here, salt-in-polymer fibers with NaF salt inlaid in polylactide (PLA) fiber network was fabricated via electrospinning and subsequent in situ forming gel-polymer electrolyte in liquid electrolytes. The obtained PLA-NaF GPE achieves a high ion conductivity (2.50×10-3 S cm-1) and large Na+ transference number (0.75) at ambient temperature. Notably, the dissolution of NaF salt occupies solvents leading to concentrated-electrolyte environment, which facilitates aggregates with increased anionic coordination (anion/Na+ >1). Aggregates with higher HOMO realize the preferential oxidation on the cathode so that inorganic-rich and stable CEI covers cathode' surface, preventing particles' breakage and showing good compatibility with different cathodes (Na3V2(PO4)3, Na2+2xFe2-x(SO4)3, Na0.72Ni0.32Mn0.68O2, NaTi2(PO4)3). While, passivated Na anode induced by the lower LUMO of aggregates, and the lower surface tension between Na anode and PLA-NaF GPE interface, leading to the dendrites-free Na anode. As a result, the assembled Na || Na3V2(PO4)3 cells display excellent electrochemical performance at all-climate conditions.

Controlling structure and interfacial interaction of monolayer TaSe2 on bilayer graphene

Tunability of interfacial effects between two-dimensional (2D) crystals is crucial not only for understanding the intrinsic properties of each system, but also for designing electronic devices based on ultra-thin heterostructures. A prerequisite of such heterostructure engineering is the availability of 2D crystals with different degrees of interfacial interactions. In this work, we report a controlled epitaxial growth of monolayer TaSe2 with different structural phases, 1H and 1 T, on a bilayer graphene (BLG) substrate using molecular beam epitaxy, and its impact on the electronic properties of the heterostructures using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. 1H-TaSe2 exhibits significant charge transfer and band hybridization at the interface, whereas 1 T-TaSe2 shows weak interactions with the substrate. The distinct interfacial interactions are attributed to the dual effects from the differences of the work functions as well as the relative interlayer distance between TaSe2 films and BLG substrate. The method demonstrated here provides a viable route towards interface engineering in a variety of transition-metal dichalcogenides that can be applied to future nano-devices with designed electronic properties.

Mediating Zn Ions Migration Behavior via β-Cyclodextrin Modified Carbon Nanotube Film for High-Performance Zn Anodes

Metallic Zn is considered as a promising anode material because of its abundance, eco-friendliness, and high theoretical capacity. However, the uncontrolled dendrite growth and side reactions restrict its further practical application. Herein, we proposed a β-cyclodextrin-modified multiwalled carbon nanotube (CD-MWCNT) layer for Zn metal anodes. The obtained CD-MWCNT layer with high affinity to Zn can significantly reduce the transfer barrier of Zn2+ at the electrode/electrolyte interface, facilitating the uniform deposition of Zn2+ and suppressing water-caused side reactions. Consequently, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell assembled with CD-MWCNT shows a significantly enhanced cycling durability, maintaining a cycling life exceeding 1000 h even under a high current density of 5 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the full battery equipped with a V2O5 cathode displays an unparalleled long life. This work unveils a promising avenue toward the achievement of high-performance Zn metal anodes.

Influence Mechanism of Interfacial Oxidation of Li3YCl6 Solid Electrolyte on Reduction Potential

Halide-based solid electrolytes are promising candidates for all solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLBs) due to their high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window, and excellent chemical stability with cathode materials. However, when tested in practice, their intrinsic electrochemical stability windows do not well match the conditions for stable operation of ASSBs. Existing literature reports halide-based ASSBs that still operate well outside the electrochemical stability window, while ASSBs that do not operate within the window are not well studied or the studies are based on the cathode material interface. In this study, we aim to elucidate the mechanism behind all-solid-state battery failure by investigating how the reduction potential of Li3YCl6 solid-state electrolyte itself changes under overcharging conditions. Our findings demonstrate that in Li-In|Li3YCl6|Li3YCl6-C half-cells during the first state of charge, Cl ions participate in charge compensation, resulting in a depletion of ligands. This phenomenon significantly affects the reduction potential of Y3+, causing it to be reduced to Y2Cl3 and ultimately to Y0 at conditions far exceeding its actual reduction potential. Furthermore, we analyze the interfacial impedance induced by this process and propose a novel perspective on battery failure.

Heptagonal Molecular Tiling via Self-Assembly of Heptagonal Phenylene-Ethynylene Macrocycle at the Liquid-Solid Interface

The molecular-level scrutinization of on-surface tiling garners considerable interest among scientists. Herein, we demonstrate molecular-level heptagonal tiling using the self-assembly of a heptagonal meta-phenylene-ethynylene macrocycle featuring 14 long alkoxy substituents at the liquid-graphite interface using scanning tunneling microscopy. This heptagonal macrocycle produces an antiparallel pattern at the 1-phenyloctane-graphite interface through van der Waals interactions between the alkoxy chains. This pattern resembles the densely packed pattern of heptagonal tiles, albeit with variations in the orientations and spacing of heptagonal cores owing to intermolecular interactions between the alkoxy chains. Conversely, at the 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene-graphite interface, the heptagonal molecule forms an oblique pattern composed of four independent molecular orientations. This phenomenon arises from core distortion induced by the coadsorption of the solvent molecules within the intrinsic macrocyclic pores. This study elucidates the design strategy - specifically, the choice of heptagonal molecular building block - for heptagonal tiling and fills a crucial gap in the field of two-dimensional crystal engineering.

Innovative modification of cellulose fibers for paper-based electrode materials using metal-organic coordination polymers

Cellulosic paper-based electrode materials have attracted increasing attention in the field of flexible supercapacitor. As a conductive polymer, polyaniline exhibits high theoretical pseudocapacitive capacitance and has been applied in paper-based electrode materials along with cellulose fibers. However, the stacking of polyaniline usually leads to poor performance of electrodes. In this study, metal-organic coordination polymers of zirconium-alizarin red S and zirconium-phytic acid are applied to modulate the polyaniline layer to obtain high-performance cellulosic paper-based electrode materials. Zirconium hydroxide is firstly loaded on cellulose fibers while alizarin red S and phytic acid are introduced to regulate the morphology of polyaniline through doping and coordination processes. The results show that the introduction of dual coordination polymers is effective to regulate the morphology of polyaniline on cellulose fibers. The performances of the paper-based electrode materials, including electrical conductivity and electrochemistry, are apparently improved. It provides a promising strategy for the potential development of economical and green electrode materials in the conventional paper-making process.

Lipid oxidation in emulsions: New insights from the past two decades

Lipid oxidation constitutes the main source of degradation of lipid-rich foods, including food emulsions. The complexity of the reactions at play combined with the increased demand from consumers for less processed and more natural foods result in additional challenges in controlling this phenomenon. This review provides an overview of the insights acquired over the past two decades on the understanding of lipid oxidation in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. After introducing the general structure of O/W emulsions and the classical mechanisms of lipid oxidation, the contribution of less studied oxidation products and the spatiotemporal resolution of these reactions will be discussed. We then highlight the impact of emulsion formulation on the mechanisms, taking into consideration the new trends in terms of emulsifiers as well as their own sensitivity to oxidation. Finally, novel antioxidant strategies that have emerged to meet the recent consumer's demand will be detailed. In an era defined by the pursuit of healthier, more natural, and sustainable food choices, a comprehensive understanding of lipid oxidation in emulsions is not only an academic quest, but also a crucial step towards meeting the evolving expectations of consumers and ensuring the quality and stability of lipid-rich food products.

Development of novel paper-based supercapacitor electrode material by combining copper-cellulose fibers with polyaniline

Along with the developing of flexible electronics, there is a strong interest in high performance flexible energy storage materials. As natural carbohydrate polymer, cellulose fibers have potential applications in the area due to their biodegradability and flexibility. However, their conductive and electrochemical properties are impossible to meet the demands of practical applications. In this study, cellulose fibers were combined with polyaniline to develop novel paper-based supercapacitor electrode material. Cellulose fibers were firstly coordinated to Cu(II) and subsequently involved in polymerization of polyaniline. Not only the mass loading of polyaniline was significantly increased, but also an impressive area specific capacitance (2767 mF/cm2 at 1 mA/cm2) was achieved. The developed strategy is efficient, environmentally friendly, and has implications for the development of cellulosic paper-based advanced functional materials.

Development of artificial synapse organizers liganded with a peptide tag for molecularly inducible neuron-microelectrode interface

It has been proposed that cell-type-specific bioelectronic interfaces for neuronal circuits could be established by utilizing the function of synapse organizers. For this purpose, using neurexin-1β and a peptide tag, we engineered compact synapse organizers that do not interact with the naturally occurring receptors but induce presynaptic differentiation upon contact with nanobody-decorated objects in cultured mammalian and chick forebrain neurons. In chick neurons, the engineered organizer exerted synaptogenesis typically in ∼4 h after the contact, even under an air atmosphere at room temperature, thereby providing a useful cellular model for establishing the molecularly inducible neuron-microelectrode interface.

Arginine (315) is required for the PLIN2-CGI-58 interface and plays a functional role in regulating nascent LDs formation in bovine adipocytes

Perilipin-2 (PLIN2) can anchor to lipid droplets (LDs) and play a crucial role in regulating nascent LDs formation. Bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC) and flow cytometry were examined to verify the PLIN2-CGI-58 interaction efficiency in bovine adipocytes. GST-Pulldown assay was used to detect the key site arginine315 function in PLIN2-CGI-58 interaction. Experiments were also examined to research these mutations function of PLIN2 in LDs formation during adipocytes differentiation, LDs were measured after staining by BODIPY, lipogenesis-related genes were also detected. Results showed that Leucine (L371A, L311A) and glycine (G369A, G376A) mutations reduced interaction efficiencies. Serine (S367A) mutations enhanced the interaction efficiency. Arginine (R315A) mutations resulted in loss of fluorescence in the cytoplasm and disrupted the interaction with CGI-58, as verified by pulldown assay. R315W mutations resulted in a significant increase in the number of LDs compared with wild-type (WT) PLIN2 or the R315A mutations. Lipogenesis-related genes were either up- or downregulated when mutated PLIN2 interacted with CGI-58. Arginine315 in PLIN2 is required for the PLIN2-CGI-58 interface and could regulate nascent LD formation and lipogenesis. This study is the first to study amino acids on the PLIN2 interface during interaction with CGI-58 in bovine and highlight the role played by PLIN2 in the regulation of bovine adipocyte lipogenesis.

"Depo-all-around": A novel FIB-based TEM specimen preparation technique for solid state battery composites and other loosely bound samples

Interfacial phenomena between active cathode materials and solid electrolytes play an important role in the function of solid-state batteries. (S)TEM imaging can give valuable insight into the atomic structure and composition at the various interfaces, yet the preparation of TEM specimen by FIB (focused ion beam) is challenging for loosely bound samples like composites, as they easily break apart during conventional preparation routines. We propose a novel preparation method that uses a frame made of deposition layers from the FIB's gas injection system to prevent the sample from breaking apart. This technique can of course be also applied to other loosely bound samples, not only those in the field of batteries.

In-silico simulation of nanoindentation on bone using a 2D cohesive finite element model

This study proposed and validated a 2D finite element (FE) model for conducting in-silico simulations of in-situ nanoindentation tests on mineralized collagen fibrils (MCF) and the extrafibrillar matrix (EFM) within human cortical bone. Initially, a multiscale cohesive FE model was developed by adapting a previous model of bone lamellae, encompassing both MCF and EFM. Subsequently, nanoindentation tests were simulated in-silico using this model, and the resulting predictions were compared to AFM nanoindentation test data to verify the model's accuracy. The FE model accurately predicted nanoindentation results under wet conditions, closely aligning with outcomes obtained from AFM nanoindentation tests. Specifically, it successfully mirrored the traction/separation curve, nanoindentation modulus, plastic energy dissipation, and plastic energy ratio obtained from AFM nanoindentation tests. Additionally, this in-silico model demonstrated its ability to capture alterations in nanoindentation properties caused by the removal of bound water, by considering corresponding changes in mechanical properties of the collagen phase and the interfaces among bone constituents. Notably, significant changes in the elastic modulus and plastic energy dissipation were observed in both MCF and EFM compartments of bone, consistent with observations in AFM nanoindentation tests. These findings indicate that the proposed in-silico model effectively captures the influence of ultrastructural changes on bone's mechanical properties at sub-lamellar levels. Presently, no experimental methods exist to conduct parametric studies elucidating the ultrastructural origins of bone tissue fragility. The introduction of this in-silico model presents an invaluable tool to bridge this knowledge gap in the future.

Ultrafast Surface-Specific Spectroscopy of Water at a Photoexcited TiO2 Model Water-Splitting Photocatalyst

A critical step in photocatalytic water dissociation is the hole-mediated oxidation reaction. Molecular-level insights into the mechanism of this complex reaction under realistic conditions with high temporal resolution are highly desirable. Here, we use femtosecond time-resolved, surface-specific vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy to study the photo-induced reaction directly at the interface of the photocatalyst TiO2 in contact with liquid water at room temperature. Thanks to the inherent surface specificity of the spectroscopic method, we can follow the reaction of solely the interfacial water molecules directly at the interface at timescales on which the reaction takes place. Following the generation of holes at the surface immediately after photoexcitation of the catalyst with UV light, water dissociation occurs on a sub-20 ps timescale. The reaction mechanism is similar at pH 3 and 11. In both cases, we observe the conversion of H2 O into Ti-OH groups and the deprotonation of pre-existing Ti-OH groups. This study provides unique experimental insights into the early steps of the photo-induced dissociation processes at the photocatalyst-water interface, relevant to the design of improved photocatalysts.

Multimodal Engineering of Catalytic Interfaces Confers Multi-Site Metal-Organic Framework for Internal Preconcentration and Accelerating Redox Kinetics in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The development of highly efficient catalysts to address the shuttle effect and sluggish redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a series of multi-site catalytic metal-organic frameworks (MSC-MOFs) were elaborated through multimodal molecular engineering to regulate both the reactant diffusion and catalysis processes. MSC-MOFs were crafted with nanocages featuring collaborative specific adsorption/catalytic interfaces formed by exposed mixed-valence metal sites and surrounding adsorption sites. This design facilitates internal preconcentration, a coadsorption mechanism, and continuous efficient catalytic conversion toward polysulfides concurrently. Leveraging these attributes, LSBs with an MSC-MOF-Ti catalytic interlayer demonstrated a 62 % improvement in discharge capacity and cycling stability. This resulted in achieving a high areal capacity (11.57 mAh cm-2 ) at a high sulfur loading (9.32 mg cm-2 ) under lean electrolyte conditions, along with a pouch cell exhibiting an ultra-high gravimetric energy density of 350.8 Wh kg-1 . Lastly, this work introduces a universal strategy for the development of a new class of efficient catalytic MOFs, promoting SRR and suppressing the shuttle effect at the molecular level. The findings shed light on the design of advanced porous catalytic materials for application in high-energy LSBs.

Investigating Electrode-Ionomer Interface Phenomena for Electrochemical Energy Applications

The endeavor to develop high-performance electrochemical energy applications has underscored the growing importance of comprehending the intricate dynamics within an electrode's structure and their influence on overall performance. This review investigates the complexities of electrode-ionomer interactions, which play a critical role in optimizing electrochemical reactions. Our examination encompasses both microscopic and meso/macro scale functions of ionomers at the electrode-ionomer interface, providing a thorough analysis of how these interactions can either enhance or impede surface reactions. Furthermore, this review explores the broader-scale implications of ionomer distribution within porous electrodes, taking into account factors like ionomer types, electrode ink formulation, and carbon support interactions. We also present and evaluate state-of-the-art techniques for investigating ionomer distribution, including electrochemical methods, imaging, modeling, and analytical techniques. Finally, the performance implications of these phenomena are discussed in the context of energy conversion devices. Through this comprehensive exploration of intricate interactions, this review contributes to the ongoing advancements in the field of energy research, ultimately facilitating the design and development of more efficient and sustainable energy devices.

Does the universal adhesive's film thickness affect dentin-bonding effectiveness?

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the influence of adhesive resin application modalities on the film thickness of the adhesive resin and the effectiveness of a two-step universal adhesive (UA) bonded in self-etch (SE) bonding mode to high C-factor class-I cavity-bottom dentin.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

After application of the primer of G2-Bond Universal (G2B, GC), the adhesive resin was applied into standard class-I cavities (human molars) following four application modalities: (1) one layer, strongly air-blown; (2) one layer, gently air-blown; (3) two layers, each gently air-blown; (4) one layer, not air-blown. After being restored with composite, each tooth was sectioned to obtain one micro-specimen (n = 10), of which the adhesive resin film thickness was measured using optical microscopy. The micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) was tested immediately or upon 100,000 thermocycles. Statistical analyses involved Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U testing (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

G2B's μTBS was significantly affected by the adhesive resin application modality and aging. Gently air-blowing the adhesive resin resulted in significantly higher immediate μTBS than strong air-blowing or no air-blowing. No significant difference in μTBS was found between single or double gently air-blown adhesive resin applications. The adhesive resin film thickness significantly varied with the application modalities.

CONCLUSIONS

A too thin or too thick adhesive resin film thickness adversely affected bond strength of the two-step UA applied in SE mode and high C-factor condition.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The adhesive resin layer thickness can affect the bonding performance of two-step UAs in high C-factor cavities. Dental clinicians remain advised to avoid improper air-blowing of UAs and strictly follow the application instructions.

Improved mechanical properties of environmentally friendly jute fibre reinforced metal laminate sandwich composite through enhanced interface

Natural plant based fibres are being increasingly used in sustainable fibre reinforced composite applications in order to meet the demand of using environmentally friendly materials for composites. Fibre metal laminates (FMLs) are used in aerospace, automobile, marine and civil engineering applications, due to their excellent mechanical behaviors compared to traditional metals and their alloys. This study describes a novel fabrication of jute fibre reinforced aluminum metal laminates, using different jute fibre architectures (plain and twill fabric structures), wherein jute fibres were used in the skins and aluminum in the core layers. Jute fibres and aluminum sheets were chemically treated to enhance the compatibility and interfacial bonding at fibre-metals-matrix interfaces. FMLs were manufactured by hot pressing technique, after the application of wet lay-up process for the resin impregnation and they were further tested under tensile, flexural and impact loading conditions. While comparing results, the twill architecture showed improved tensile and flexural properties compared to plain fabric based FMLs. Chemical treatments on twill jute fibres and metal sheets further exceptionally enhanced the flexural properties (151 MPa flexural strength and 21.3 GPa modulus and they were increased by 186.5 % and 722.7 % respectively compared to the untreated jute fibre counterparts) of the laminates due to a significant improvement in the adhesion between the jute fibre and aluminum sheet after alkali treatment applied. Therefore, with these enhanced properties, jute based FML laminates can be used as sustainable composite materials in many structural applications.

Turing Pattern Formation in Reaction-Cross-Diffusion Systems with a Bilayer Geometry

Conditions for self-organisation via Turing's mechanism in biological systems represented by reaction-diffusion or reaction-cross-diffusion models have been extensively studied. Nonetheless, the impact of tissue stratification in such systems is under-explored, despite its ubiquity in the context of a thin epithelium overlying connective tissue, for instance the epidermis and underlying dermal mesenchyme of embryonic skin. In particular, each layer can be subject to extensively different biochemical reactions and transport processes, with chemotaxis - a special case of cross-diffusion - often present in the mesenchyme, contrasting the solely molecular transport typically found in the epidermal layer. We study Turing patterning conditions for a class of reaction-cross-diffusion systems in bilayered regions, with a thin upper layer and coupled by a linear transport law. In particular, the role of differential transport through the interface is explored together with the presence of asymmetry between the homogeneous equilibria of the two layers. A linear stability analysis is carried out around a spatially homogeneous equilibrium state in the asymptotic limit of weak and strong coupling strengths, where quantitative approximations of the bifurcation curve can be computed. Our theoretical findings, for an arbitrary number of reacting species, reveal quantitative Turing conditions, highlighting when the coupling mechanism between the layered regions can either trigger patterning or stabilize a spatially homogeneous equilibrium regardless of the independent patterning state of each layer. We support our theoretical results through direct numerical simulations, and provide an open source code to explore such systems further.

Tuning the bis-hydrophilic balance of microgels: A tool to control the stability of water-in-water emulsions

HYPOTHESIS

The stability of purely aqueous emulsions (W/W) formed by mixing incompatible polymers, can be achieved through the Pickering effect of particles adsorption at the interface. However, there is, as yet, no guideline regarding the chemical nature of the particles to predict whether they will stabilize a particular W/W emulsion. Bis-hydrophilic soft microgels, made of copolymerized poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) and dextran (Dex), act as very efficient stabilizers for PEO/Dextran emulsions, because the two polymers have an affinity for each polymer phase.

EXPERIMENTS

The ratio between both components of the microgels is varied in order to modulate the bis-hydrophilic balance, the content of Dex compared to pNIPAM varying from 0 to 60 wt%. The partition between the two aqueous phases and the adsorption of microgels at the W/W interface is measured by confocal microscopy. The stability of emulsions is assessed via turbidity measurements and microstructural investigations under sedimentation or compression.

FINDINGS

The adsorption of particles and their partitioning is found to evolve progressively as a function of bis-hydrophilic balance. At room temperature, the stability of the resulting W/W emulsions also depends on the bis-hydrophilic balance with a maximum of stability for the particles containing 50%wt of Dex, for the Dex-in-PEO emulsions, while the PEO-in-Dex become stable above this value. The thermo-responsiveness of the microgels translates into stability inversion of the emulsions below 50 wt% of Dex in the microgels, whereas above 50 wt%, no emulsion is stable. This work paves the way of a guideline to design efficient and responsive W/W stabilizers.

The Structure of Oxysterols Determines Their Behavior at Phase Boundaries: Implications for Model Membranes and Structure-Activity Relationships

The presence of an additional polar group in the cholesterol backbone increases the hydrophilicity of resulting compounds (oxysterols), determines their arrangement at the phase boundary, and interactions with other lipids and proteins. As a result, physicochemical properties of biomembranes (i.e., elasticity, permeability, and ability to bind proteins) are modified, which in turn may affect their functioning. The observed effect depends on the type of oxysterol and its concentration and can be both positive (e.g., antiviral activity) or negative (disturbance of cholesterol homeostasis, signal transduction, and protein segregation). The membrane activity of oxysterols has been successfully studied using membrane models (vesicles, monolayers, and solid supported films). Membrane models, in contrast to the natural systems, provide the possibility to selectively examine the specific aspect of biomolecule-membrane interactions. Moreover, the gradual increase in the complexity of the used model allows to understand the molecular phenomena occurring at the membrane level. The interest in research on artificial membranes has increased significantly in recent years, mainly due to the development of modern and sophisticated physicochemical methods (static and dynamic) in both the micro- and nanoscale, which are applied with the assistance of powerful theoretical calculations. This review provides an overview of the most important findings on this topic in the current literature.

Preparations, application of polysaccharide-protein nanoparticles and their assembly at the oil-water interface

With the development of nanotechnology, nanoparticles have played an important role in pharmaceuticals, foods and materials, in particular, protein/polysaccharide based composite nanoparticles have received attention from researchers for safety and green production. This paper summarized in detail the preparation methods, applications of protein/polysaccharide nanoparticles (PPNPs) in recent years, especially the mechanism of stabilizing the oil-water interface. Currently, the polysaccharides applied are more traditional, such as chitosan, pectin and carboxymethyl cellulose, so there is still a lot of room for the development of raw materials that can be used to prepare PPNPs. Based on this, we also proposed three promising polysaccharides: seaweed polysaccharide, lycium barbarum polysaccharide and lactobacillus exopolysaccharides, describing their characteristics as well as their application prospects, this article can serve as a reference for interested researchers.

Enhancing interfacial interaction and crystallization in polylactic acid-based biocomposites via synergistic effect of wood fiber and self-assembly nucleating agent

Incorporation of natural fibers into polylactic acid (PLA) provides a feasible pathway to improve the performance of PLA with a low environmental impact. However, the insufficient interfacial adhesion between fiber and matrix limits the reinforcement efficiency of fiber and final mechanical properties of the biocomposites. Herein we reported an efficient method to simultaneously enhance interfacial interaction, crystallization and mechanical performance of PLA-based biocomposites via combination of wood fiber (WF) and a self-assembly nucleating agent (TMC-300). The interactions between WF and TMC-300 and its influence on PLA, including interfacial crystal morphology, crystallization behavior, and mechanical performance were studied. The results showed that TMC-300 could self-assemble into dendritic-like structure on WF surface driven by hydrogen bonding, inducing the epitaxial crystallization of PLA. This unique interfacial crystallization integrated PLA matrix with WF, resulting in better interfacial adhesion. Under the optimal TMC-300 content (0.5 wt%), the flexural strength and notched impact strength of PLA composites increased by 10 % and 69 % compared with neat PLA, respectively. Additionally, TMC-300 and WF synergistically functioned as effective nucleating agents, which significantly accelerated the crystallization rate and improved the crystallinity of PLA. This work provides a new insight into the enhancement of interfacial bonding in natural fiber/PLA biocomposites.

Residual upper airway obstruction during nocturnal noninvasive ventilation despite high positive expiratory pressure. Impact of oronasal mask to nasal mask switch

BACKGROUND

Nasal mask (NM) and oronasal masks (OM) can be used to provide noninvasive ventilation (NIV). Recent studies suggested that OM is the most used interface and that there is no difference in efficacy or in tolerance between OM and NM for chronic use. However, studies focusing on video laryngoscopy underlined the impact of OM in residual upper airway obstruction (UAO) under NIV. We sought to assess the real-life practice of switching from OM to NM when UAO events persist despite high EPAP levels.

METHODS

In an open-label single center prospective cohort study, data from files and full night polysomnography on NM and OM were collected for patients wearing OM and presenting an UAO index ≥15/h despite an EPAP level ≥ 10 cmH20.

RESULTS

Forty-four patients were included in the study. In 31 patients (74 %), switching to a NM reduced UAOi to ≥10/h. Interestingly, 92 % of these patients still had NM at 3 to 12 months of follow-up. Switching to a NM was also associated with a trend in paCO2 reduction and significant improvements in Epworth, sleep quality and NIV compliance. Successful interface switching was significantly associated with female gender, and a trend was observed in non-smokers.

CONCLUSION

As for CPAP, switching to a NM improved NIV efficacy in a selected group of patients presenting residual UAO events despite high EPAP levels. Additionally, this switch has an impact on compliance and subjective sleepiness. Thus, in patients with persisting UAO on OM, switching to a NM could be a first-line intervention before considering further investigation such as polygraphy or video laryngoscopy. We also derive an algorithm for mask allocation and adaptation in acute and chronic NIV use.

Motion of magnetic motors across liquid-liquid interface

HYPOTHESIS

In a number of applications related to chemical engineering and drug delivery, magnetic nanoparticles should move through a liquid-liquid interface in the presence of surfactant molecules. However, due to the action of capillary forces, this is not always possible. The mechanism of particle motion through the interface essentially depends on the intensity of the Marangoni flow, which is induced on the interface during its deformation.

EXPERIMENTS

In this paper we study the motion of nanoparticles Fe3O4 through the water-tridecane interface under the action of a nonuniform magnetic field when using different surfactants.

FINDINGS

If the linear size of the magnetic motor turns out to be less than a certain critical value, then it is not able to move between phases due to the action of capillary forces on the interface. Depending on the type and concentration of the surfactant used, various mechanisms for the motor motion through the liquid-liquid interface can be carried out. In one of them, a liquid phase is transferred through the interface along with a movable motor, while in the other, it is not.

Flexible multifunctional titania nanotube array platform for biological interfacing

Abstract

The current work presents a novel flexible multifunctional platform for biological interface applications. The use of titania nanotube arrays (TNAs) as a multifunctional material is explored for soft-tissue interface applications. In vitro biocompatibility of TNAs to brain-derived cells was first examined by culturing microglia cells-the resident immune cells of the central nervous system on the surface of TNAs. The release profile of an anti-inflammatory drug, dexamethasone from TNAs-on-polyimide substrates, was then evaluated under different bending modes. Flexible TNAs-on-polyimide sustained a linear release of anti-inflammatory dexamethasone up to ~11 days under different bending conditions. Finally, microfabrication processes for patterning and transferring TNA microsegments were developed to facilitate structural stability during device flexing and to expand the set of compatible polymer substrates. The techniques developed in this study can be applied to integrate TNAs or other similar nanoporous inorganic films onto various polymer substrates.

Impact statement

Titania nanotube arrays (TNAs) are highly tunable and biocompatible structures that lend themselves to multifunctional implementation in implanted devices. A particularly important aspect of titania nanotubes is their ability to serve as nano-reservoirs for drugs or other therapeutic agents that slowly release after implantation. To date, TNAs have been used to promote integration with rigid, dense tissues for dental and orthopedic applications. This work aims to expand the implant applications that can benefit from TNAs by integrating them onto soft polymer substrates, thereby promoting compatibility with soft tissues. The successful direct growth and integration of TNAs on polymer substrates mark a critical step toward developing mechanically compliant implantable systems with drug delivery from nanostructured inorganic functional materials. Diffusion-driven release kinetics and the high drug-loading efficiency of TNAs offer tremendous potential for sustained drug delivery for scientific investigations, to treat injury and disease, and to promote device integration with biological tissues. This work opens new opportunities for developing novel and more effective implanted devices that can significantly improve patient outcomes and quality of life.

Current treatment strategies in managing side effects associated with domiciliary positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy for patients with sleep disordered breathing: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Sleep disordered breathing is commonly treated with positive airway pressure therapy. Positive airway pressure therapy is delivered via a tight-fitting mask with common side effects including: leak, ineffective treatment, residual sleep disordered breathing, eye irritation, nasal congestion, pressure ulcers and poor concordance with therapy. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify the effectiveness of current treatment strategies for managing side effects associated with positive airway pressure therapy. Five databases were searched and 10,809 articles were screened, with 36 articles included in the review. Studies investigated: dressings, nasal spray/douche, chin straps, heated humidification and interfaces. No intervention either improved or detrimentally affected: positive airway pressure concordance, Epworth Sleepiness Score, residual apnoea hypopnea index or interface leak. The review was limited by study heterogeneity, particularly for outcome measures. Additionally, patient demographics were not reported, making it difficult to apply the findings to a broad clinical population. This review highlights the paucity of evidence supporting treatment strategies to manage side effects of positive airway pressure therapy.

Solid-Solid Interfacial Contact of Tubing Walls Drives Therapeutic Protein Aggregation During Peristaltic Pumping

Peristaltic pumping during bioprocessing can cause therapeutic protein loss and aggregation during use. Due to the complexity of this apparatus, root-cause mechanisms behind protein loss have been long sought. We have developed new methodologies isolating various peristaltic pump mechanisms to determine their effect on monomer loss. Closed-loops of peristaltic tubing were used to investigate the effects of peristaltic pump parameters on temperature and monomer loss, whilst two mechanism isolation methodologies are used to isolate occlusion and lateral expansion-relaxation of peristaltic tubing. Heat generated during peristaltic pumping can cause heat-induced monomer loss and the extent of heat gain is dependent on pump speed and tubing type. Peristaltic pump speed was inversely related to the rate of monomer loss whereby reducing speed 2.0-fold increased loss rates by 2.0- to 5.0-fold. Occlusion is a parameter that describes the amount of tubing compression during pumping. Varying this to start the contacting of inner tubing walls is a threshold that caused an immediate 20-30% additional monomer loss and turbidity increase. During occlusion, expansion-relaxation of solid-liquid interfaces and solid-solid interface contact of tubing walls can occur simultaneously. Using two mechanisms isolation methods, the latter mechanism was found to be most destructive and a function of solid-solid contact area, where increasing the contact area 2.0-fold increased monomer loss by 1.6-fold. We establish that a form of solid-solid contact mechanism whereby the contact solid interfaces disrupt adsorbed protein films is the root-cause behind monomer loss and protein aggregation during peristaltic pumping.

Immunobiology of foreign body response to composite PLACL/gelatin electrospun nanofiber meshes with mesenchymal stem/stromal cells in a mouse model: Implications in pelvic floor tissue engineering and regeneration

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) is a common gynaecological disorder where pelvic organs protrude into the vagina. While transvaginal mesh surgery using non-degradable polymers was a commonly accepted treatment for POP, it has been associated with high rates of adverse events such as mesh erosion, exposure and inflammation due to serious foreign body response and therefore banned from clinical use after regulatory mandates. This study proposes a tissue engineering strategy using uterine endometrium-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (eMSC) delivered with degradable poly L-lactic acid-co-poly ε-caprolactone (PLACL) and gelatin (G) in form of a composite electrospun nanofibrous mesh (P + G nanomesh) and evaluates the immunomodulatory mechanism at the material interfaces. The study highlights the critical acute and chronic inflammatory markers along with remodelling factors that determine the mesh surgery outcome. We hypothesise that such a bioengineered construct enhances mesh integration and mitigates the Foreign Body Response (FBR) at the host interface associated with mesh complications. Our results show that eMSC-based nanomesh significantly increased 7 genes associated with ECM synthesis and cell adhesion including, Itgb1, Itgb2, Vcam1, Cd44, Cdh2, Tgfb1, Tgfbr1, 6 genes related to angiogenesis including Ang1, Ang2, Vegfa, Pdgfa, Serpin1, Cxcl12, and 5 genes associated with collagen remodelling Col1a1, Col3a1, Col6a1, Col6a2, Col4a5 at six weeks post-implantation. Our findings suggest that cell-based tissue-engineered constructs potentially mitigate the FBR response elicited by biomaterial implants. From a clinical perspective, this construct provides an alternative to current inadequacies in surgical outcomes by modulating the immune response, inducing angiogenesis and ECM synthesis during the acute and chronic phases of the FBR.

Biomedical Applications of Electro-Initiated Polymerisation on Ti6Al4 V Titanium Alloy using Silk Fibroin Coatings for Antibiotic Delivery and Improved Cell Metabolism

Silk fibroin interactions with metallic surfaces can provide utility for medical materials and devices. Toward this goal, titanium alloy (Ti6Al4 V) was covalently grafted with polyacrylamide via electrochemically reducing 4-nitrobenzene diazonium salt in the presence of acrylamide. Analysis of the modified surfaces with FT-IR spectra, SEM and AFM were consistent with surface grafting. Functionalised titanium samples with a silk fibroin membrane, with and without impregnated therapeutics, were used to assess cytocompatibility and drug delivery. Initial cytocompatibility experiments using fibroblasts showed that the functionalised samples, both with and without silk fibroin coatings, supported significant increases between 72-136 % in cell metabolism, compared to the controls after 7 days. A 7-days release profiling showed consistent bacterial inhibition through gentamicin release with average inhibition zones of 239 mm2 . Over a 5-week period, silk fibroin coated samples, both with and without growth factors, supported better human mesenchymal stem cell metabolism with increases reaching 1031 % and 388 %, respectively, compared to samples without the silk fibroin coating with.

From Liquid to Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries: Fundamental Issues and Recent Developments

The widespread adoption of lithium-ion batteries has been driven by the proliferation of portable electronic devices and electric vehicles, which have increasingly stringent energy density requirements. Lithium metal batteries (LMBs), with their ultralow reduction potential and high theoretical capacity, are widely regarded as the most promising technical pathway for achieving high energy density batteries. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of fundamental issues related to high reactivity and migrated interfaces in LMBs. Furthermore, we propose improved strategies involving interface engineering, 3D current collector design, electrolyte optimization, separator modification, application of alloyed anodes, and external field regulation to address these challenges. The utilization of solid-state electrolytes can significantly enhance the safety of LMBs and represents the only viable approach for advancing them. This review also encompasses the variation in fundamental issues and design strategies for the transition from liquid to solid electrolytes. Particularly noteworthy is that the introduction of SSEs will exacerbate differences in electrochemical and mechanical properties at the interface, leading to increased interface inhomogeneity-a critical factor contributing to failure in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. Based on recent research works, this perspective highlights the current status of research on developing high-performance LMBs.

Electron-rich Au nanocrystals/Co3O4 interface for enhanced electrochemical nitrate reduction into ammonia

Solar-driven electrochemical NO3- reduction reaction (NO3-RR) is a clean and sustainable strategy that can convert pollutant NO3- in wastewater to value-added NH3. In recent years, cobalt oxides-based catalysts have shown their intrinsic catalytic properties toward NO3-RR but still have room for improvement through catalyst design. Coupling metal oxides with noble metal has been demonstrated to improve electrochemical catalytic efficiency. Here, we use Au species to tune the surface structure of Co3O4 and improve the efficiency of NO3-RR to NH3. The obtained Au nanocrystals-Co3O4 catalyst exhibited an onset potential of 0.54 V vs RHE, NH3 yield rate of 27.86 µg/h·cm2, and Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 83.1% at 0.437 V vs RHE in an H-cell, which is much higher than Au small species (Au clusters or single atoms)-Co3O4 (15.12 µg/h·cm2) and pure Co3O4 (11.38 µg/h·cm2), respectively. Combined experiments with theory calculations, we attributed the enhanced performance of Au nanocrystals-Co3O4 to the reduced energy barrier of *NO hydrogenation to the *NHO and suppression of HER, which originated from the charge transfer from Au to Co3O4. Using an amorphous silicon triple-junction (a-Si TJ) as the solar cell and an anion exchange membrane electrolyzer (AME), an unassisted solar-driven NO3-RR to NH3 prototype was realized with a yield rate of 4.65 mg/h and FE of 92.1%.

Interfacial excess of solutes across phase boundaries using atom probe microscopy

Three-dimensional elemental mapping in atom probe microscopy provides invaluable insights into the structure and composition of interfaces in materials. Quasi-atomic resolution facilitates access to the solute decoration of grain boundaries, advancing the knowledge on local segregation and depletion phenomena. More recent developments unlocked three-dimensional mapping of the interfacial excess across grain boundaries. Such detailed understanding of the local structure and composition of these interfaces enabled advancements in processing methods and material development. However, many engineering alloys, such as Ni-based superalloys, have much more complex microstructures with various solutes and precipitates in close proximity to grain boundaries. The complex interaction of grain boundary segregation and grain boundary precipitates requires precise compositional control. However, abrupt changes in solute solubility across phase boundaries obscure the interfacial excess in proximity to grain boundaries. Therefore, this study provides a methodological framework of the quantitative characterization of phase boundaries in proximity to grain boundaries using atom probe microscopy. The detailed mass spectrum ranging of MC, M23C6, and M6C carbides is explored in order to achieve satisfactory compositional information. Proximity histograms and correlating concentration difference profiles determine the interface location, where a Gibbs dividing surface is not accessible. This enables reliable direct calculation of the interfacial excess across phase boundaries. Intuitively interpretable and quantitative 'interface plots' are introduced, and showcased for phase boundaries between γ-matrix, γ' precipitates, GB-γ', MC, M23C6, and M6C carbides. The presented framework advances access to the local composition in proximity to grain boundaries and may be applicable to other engineering alloys or materials with functional properties.

Characterization of the skin-to-bone mechanical interaction on porcine scalp: A combined experimental and computational approach

Fasciae are soft tissues permitting a large but finite sliding between organs, but also between skin and its underlying elements. The contribution of fasciae has been seldomly reported in the literature, and is usually neglected or overly simplified within simulations. In the present contribution, we propose to use peeling tests in order to quantify the skin-to-bone interaction associated with a simple computational approach based on a geometrical modeling of the skin-to-bone interface. To this aim, a new experimental set up combined with a computational model to characterize the skin-to-bone interaction were proposed. The current work is devoted to the porcine scalp complex since it constitutes a common mechanical surrogate for the human scalp complex. The ad hoc computational approach and peeling set up were firstly evaluated on a validation material, before being used to characterize the skin-to-bone interaction within 6 porcine specimens harvested from the scalp. Our experimental setup allowed to measure the peeling response of porcine scalp, showing a three-regimes response including a plateau force. The computational approach satisfyingly reproduced the peeling response based uniquely on experimental-based parameters and on a discrete modeling of skin-to-bone interface. The presented methodology is a first attempt to propose a computationally efficient geometrically based model able to take into account the skin-to-bone interaction up to failure and corroborated by experimental data, and may be largely extended to the modeling of soft interactions between biological human tissues in the future.

Walnut (Juglans regia L.) kernel oil bodies recovered by aqueous extraction for utilization as ingredient in food emulsions: Exploration of their microstructure, composition and the effects of homogenization, pH, and salt ions on their physical stability

Natural oil-in-water emulsions containing plant oil bodies (OBs), also called oleosomes, rich in health-promoting omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω3 PUFA) are of increasing interest for food applications. In this study, we focused on walnut kernel OBs (WK-OBs) and explored their microstructure, composition and physical stability in ionic environments as well as the impact of homogenization. A green process involving aqueous extraction by grinding of WK allowed the co-extraction of OBs and proteins, and centrifugation was used to recover the WK-OBs. Confocal laser scanning microscopy images showed the spherical shape of WK-OBs with an oil core envelopped by a layer of phospholipids (0.16 % of lipids) and embedded proteins. Their mean diameter was 5.1 ± 0.3 µm. The WK-OBs contained 70.1 % PUFA with 57.8 % ω6 linoleic acid and 12.3 % ω3 α-linolenic acid representing 68 % and 11.6 % of the total fatty acids in the sn-2 position of the triacylglycerols (TAG), respectively. Trilinolein was the main TAG (23.1 %). The WK-OBs also contained sterols (1223 ± 33 mg/kg lipids; 86 % β-sitosterol), carotenoids (0.62 ± 0.01 mg/kg lipids; 49.2 % β-carotene), and tocopherols (322.7 ± 7.7 mg/kg lipids; 89 % γ-tocopherol), confirming their interest as health-promoting ingredients. The decrease in the size of WK-OBs under high-pressure homogenization avoided phase separation upon storage. The anionic WK-OB surface at neutral pH was affected by stressful ionic environments (pH, NaCl, CaCl2), that induced aggregation of WK-OBs and decreased the physical stability of the emulsions. Emulsions containing WK-OBs are promising to diversify the market of the ω3-rich plant-based food products and beverages.

Spatial association of Mycobacterium bovis infection in cattle and badgers at the pasture interface in an endemic area in France

Despite control and surveillance programmes, Mycobacterium bovis, the main aetiologic agent of bovine tuberculosis (bTB), is still detected on cattle farms and in wildlife populations in France, especially in badgers in the French Côte-d'Or département. The aim of our study was to find out if infected badgers were trapped significantly closer to pastures of infected farms than non-infected badgers and, if so, to determine the most efficient distance around those pastures for badger trapping, particularly for surveillance purposes. We studied two subareas (southern and northern), chosen based on natural barriers to badger movements and according to the presence of pastures belonging to infected farms (POIFs) and infected or non-infected badgers. In each subarea, we computed the shortest distances D0 and D between badgers trapped a given year n between 2015 and 2019 (n = 59 infected and n = 1535 non-infected badgers for D0; n = 53 infected and n = 1476 non-infected badgers for D) and POIFs designated as infected between the year n - 4 and n + 1 (respectively n = 373 and n = 388 POIFs). D0 was calculated without considering spoligotypes, while D was calculated considering the possible epidemiological link between infected badgers and POIFs by using bTB spoligotype information. Then, we computed the observed mean and median of the D0 and D distances and used a bootstrap analysis to test if infected badgers were found significantly closer to POIFs than non-infected badgers. We observed that infection of badgers was not independent of distance from POIF in both subareas but distances (D0 or D) were different between the northern and southern subarea. In the northern subarea, which displays a mosaic landscape (mean and median D distances were respectively 612 m and 303 m for infected badgers), infected badgers indeed were trapped closer to POIFs, considering D0 and D. In the southern subarea, predominantly forested, infected badgers were significantly closer to POIFs than non-infected badgers when considering D0 but not for D (mean and median D distances were respectively 7148 m and 4831 m for infected badgers). These results will help to determine the most efficient distance from POIFs to trap badgers to determine their infection status in countryside landscapes. They also highlight the need to better understand the epidemiological systems at play in more forested landscapes where badgers may behave differently or other susceptible sympatric wild species might play a more important role in the circulation of M. bovis, both phenomena contributing to badger infection at greater distances from POIFs.

Construction of PdSe2/ZnIn2S4 heterojunctions with covalent interface for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Constructing semiconductor heterojunctions can enable novel schemes for highly efficient photocatalytic activity. However, introducing strong covalent bonding at the interface remains an open challenge. Herein, ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) with abundant sulfur vacancies (Sv) is synthesized with the presence of PdSe2 as an additional precursor. The sulfur vacancies of Sv-ZIS are filled by Se atoms of PdSe2, leading to the Zn-In-Se-Pd compound interface. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the increased density of states at the interface, which will increase the local carrier concentration. Moreover, the length of the Se-H bond is longer than that of the SH bond, which is good for the evolution of H2 from the interface. In addition, the charge redistribution at the interface results in a built-in field, providing the driving force for efficient separation of photogenerated electron-hole. Therefore, the PdSe2/Sv-ZIS heterojunction with strong covalent interface exhibits an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance (4423 μmol g-1h-1) with an apparent quantum efficiency (λ > 420 nm) of 9.1 %. This work will provide new inspirations to improve photocatalytic activity by engineering the interfaces of semiconductor heterojunctions.

Vascularized Sural Nerve Graft, Fascial Free Flap, and Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface in the Setting of Recurrent Thigh Liposarcoma: A Case Report

Background

There is no clear consensus in the literature regarding clinical indications for vascularized nerve grafts. Most studies indicate that vascularized nerve grafting, rather than non-vascularized nerve grafting, is indicated for nerve gaps of greater than 7 cm. Vascularized nerve grafts are superior to non-vascularized nerve grafts because they possess an independent blood supply. However, not all nerve injuries can be repaired via vascularized nerve grafts.

Methods

A 32-year-old female received a fascial free flap and vascularized sural nerve graft after having multiple reresections of a recurrent thigh liposarcoma.

Results

A 25-cm segment of the sural nerve was isolated alongside the lesser saphenous vein and intervening fascia. The free fascial flap was subsequently reversed and placed into the thigh. Vascular anastomoses were created, and the sural nerve was anastomosed to the peroneal nerve. A small portion of muscle from the thigh was wrapped around tibial nerve fascicles of the sciatic nerve to create a regenerative nerve interface.

Conclusions

Benefits of vascularized sural nerve graft compared with other vascularized nerve grafts include negligible sensory loss at the donor site and a nerve graft that can be designed on itself due to its vast length. Additionally, vascularized sural nerve grafts provided a better rate of axonal regeneration, rate of electromyographic return, and motor and sensory outcome compared with non-vascularized sural nerve grafts.

Fine-Tuning Electrolyte Concentration and Metal-Organic Framework Surface toward Actuating Fast Zn2+ Dehydration for Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries

Functional porous coating on zinc electrode is emerging as a powerful ionic sieve to suppress dendrite growth and side reactions, thereby improving highly reversible aqueous zinc ion batteries. However, the ultrafast charge rate is limited by the substantial cation transmission strongly associated with dehydration efficiency. Here, we unveil the entire dynamic process of solvated Zn2+ ions' continuous dehydration from electrolyte across the MOF-electrolyte interface into channels with the aid of molecular simulations, taking zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-7 as proof-of-concept. The moderate concentration of 2 M ZnSO4 electrolyte being advantageous over other concentrations possesses the homogeneous water-mediated ion pairing distribution, resulting in the lowest dehydration energy, which elucidates the molecular mechanism underlying such concentration adopted by numerous experimental studies. Furthermore, we show that modifying linkers on the ZIF-7 surface with hydrophilic groups such as -OH or -NH2 can weaken the solvation shell of Zn2+ ions to lower the dehydration free energy by approximately 1 eV, and may improve the electrical conductivity of MOF. These results shed light on the ions delivery mechanism and pave way to achieve long-term stable zinc anodes at high capacities through atomic-scale modification of functional porous materials.

Dual-Interface Engineering in Perovskite Solar Cells with 2D Carbides

Passivating the interfaces between the perovskite and charge transport layers is crucial for enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here we report a dual-interface engineering approach to improving the performance of FA0.85 MA0.15 Pb(I0.95 Br0.05 )3 -based PSCs by incorporating Ti3 C2 Clx Nano-MXene and o-TB-GDY nanographdiyne (NanoGDY) into the electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite and perovskite/ hole transport layer (HTL) interfaces, respectively. The dual-interface passivation simultaneously suppresses non-radiative recombination and promotes carrier extraction by forming the Pb-Cl chemical bond and strong coordination of π-electron conjugation with undercoordinated Pb defects. The resulting perovskite film has an ultralong carrier lifetime exceeding 10 μs and an enlarged crystal size exceeding 2.5 μm. A maximum PCE of 24.86 % is realized, with an open-circuit voltage of 1.20 V. Unencapsulated cells retain 92 % of their initial efficiency after 1464 hours in ambient air and 80 % after 1002 hours of thermal stability test at 85 °C.
