A macroscopic assessment of porosity and new bone formation on the inferior pars basilaris: Normal growth or an indicator of scurvy?

OBJECTIVES

This research aims to determine the aetiology of porosity and subperiosteal new bone formation on the inferior surface of the pars basilaris.

MATERIALS

A total of 199 non-adult individuals aged 36 weeks gestation to 3.5 years, from a total of 12 archaeological sites throughout the UK, including Iron Age (n=43), Roman (n=12), and post-medieval (n=145) sites, with a preserved pars basilaris.

METHODS

The pars basilaris was divided into six segments, with porosity (micro and macro) and subperiosteal new bone formation recorded on the inferior surface in scorbutic and non-scorbutic individuals. Scurvy was diagnosed using criteria from the palaeopathological literature that was developed using a biological approach.

RESULTS

There was no statistically significant difference in microporosity between scorbutic and non-scorbutic individuals in four out of the six segments analysed. There was a significant negative correlation between age and microporosity in non-scorbutic and scorbutic individuals. A significant difference in subperiosteal new bone formation was observed between scorbutic and non-scorbutic individuals.

CONCLUSIONS

Microporosity on the inferior pars basilaris should not be considered among the suite of lesions included in the macroscopic assessment of scurvy in non-adult skeletal remains (less than 3.5 years).

SIGNIFICANCE

This study highlights the risk of over diagnosing scurvy in past populations.

LIMITATIONS

It is difficult to distinguish between physiological (normal) and pathological (abnormal) bone changes in the skeleton of individuals less than one year of age.

SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH

Future research should focus on the analysis of individuals over 3.5 years of age.

Acoustic droplet vaporization for on-demand modulation of microporosity in smart hydrogels

Microporosity in hydrogels is critical for directing tissue formation and function. We have developed a fibrin-based smart hydrogel, termed an acoustically responsive scaffold (ARS), which responds to focused ultrasound in a spatiotemporally controlled, user-defined manner. ARSs are highly flexible platforms due to the inclusion of phase-shift droplets and their tunable response to ultrasound through a mechanism termed acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV). Here, we demonstrated that ADV enabled consistent generation of micropores in ARSs, throughout the entire thickness (∼5.5 mm), utilizing perfluorooctane phase-shift droplets. Size characteristics of the generated micropores were quantified in response to critical parameters including acoustic properties, droplet size, and shear elastic modulus of fibrin using confocal microscopy. The findings showed that the length of the generated micropores correlated directly with excitation frequency, peak rarefactional pressure, pulse duration, droplet size, and indirectly with the shear elastic modulus of the fibrin matrix. The ADV-generated micropores in ARSs were further compared with cavitation-mediated micropores in fibrin gels without droplets. Additionally, the Keller-Miksis equation was used to predict an upper bound for micropore formation in ARSs at varying driving frequencies and droplet sizes. Finally, our in vivo studies showed that host cell migration following ADV-induced micropore formation was frequency-dependent, with up to 2.6 times higher cell migration at lower frequencies. Overall, these findings demonstrate a new potential application of ADV in hydrogels. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Interconnected micropores within a hydrogel can facilitate many cell-mediated processes. Most techniques for generating micropores are typically not biocompatible or do not enable controlled, in situ micropore formation. We used an ultrasound-based technique, termed acoustic droplet vaporization, to generate microporosity in smart hydrogels termed acoustically responsive scaffolds (ARSs). ARSs contain a fibrin matrix doped with a phase-shift droplet. We demonstrate that unique acoustic properties of phase-shift droplets can be tailored to yield spatiotemporally controlled, on-demand micropore formation. Additionally, the size characteristics of the ultrasound-generated micropores can be modulated by tuning ultrasound parameters, droplet properties, and bulk elastic properties of fibrin. Finally, we demonstrate significant, frequency-dependent host cell migration in subcutaneously implanted ARSs in mice following ultrasound-induced micropore formation in situ.

Temporal changes in cortical microporosity during estrogen deficiency associated with perilacunar resorption and osteocyte apoptosis: A pilot study

Osteocytes can actively regulate bone microporosity, through either perilacunar resorption or micropetrosis following apoptosis. Osteocyte apoptosis is more prevalent in estrogen deficiency and changes in the lacunar-canalicular network of osteocytes have been reported. Temporal changes in bone mineralisation and osteocytes cellular strains occur, which might be associated with osteocyte-driven microporosity changes, although time dependant changes in bone microporosity are not yet fully understood. In this pilot study we conducted micro-CT analysis, backscatter electron imaging and histological analysis of femoral cortical bone form an ovariectomized rat model of osteoporosis to investigate whether estrogen deficiency causes temporal changes in lacunar and vascular porosity. We also assessed MMP14 expression, lacunar occupancy and mineral infilling, as indicators of perilacunar resorption and micropetrosis. We report temporal changes in cortical microporosity in estrogen deficiency. Specifically, canalicular and vascular porosity initially increased (4 weeks post-OVX), coinciding with the period of rapid bone loss, whereas in the longer term (14 weeks post-OVX) lacunar and canalicular diameter decreased. Interestingly, these changes coincided with an increased prevalence of empty lacunae and osteocyte lacunae were observed to be more circular with a mineralised border around the lacunar space. In addition we report an increase in MMP14+ osteocytes, which also suggests active matrix degradation by these cells. Together these results provide an insight into the temporal changes in cortical microporosity during estrogen deficiency and suggest the likelihood of occurrence of both perilacunar resorption and osteocyte apoptosis leading to micropetrosis. We propose that microporosity changes arise due to processes driven by distinct populations of osteocytes, which are either actively resorbing their matrix or have undergone apoptosis and are infilling lacunae by micropetrosis.

Characterization of Controlled Release Microspheres Using FIB-SEM and Image-Based Release Prediction

For polymer-based controlled release drug products (e.g. microspheres and implants), active pharmaceutical ingredient distribution and microporosity inside the polymer matrix are critical for product performance, particularly drug release kinetics. Due to the decreasing domain size and increasing complexity of such products, conventional characterization and release test techniques are limited by their resolution and speed. In this study, samples of controlled release poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microspheres in the diameter range of 30-80 μm are investigated with focused ion beam scanning electron microscope imaging at 20 nm or higher resolution. Image data is quantified with artificial intelligence-based image analytics to provide size distributions of drug particles and pores within the microsphere sample. With an innovative image-based numerical simulation method, release profiles are predicted in a matter of days regardless of the designed release time. A mechanistic understanding on the impact of porosity to the interplays of drug, formulation, process, and dissolution was gained.

Graphene nanosheets as reinforcement and cell-instructive material in soft tissue scaffolds

Mechanical strength of polymeric scaffolds deteriorates quickly in the physiological mileu. This can be minimized by reinforcing the polymeric matrix with graphene, a planar two-dimensional material with unique physicochemical and biological properties. Association between the sheet and polymer chains offers a range of porosity commensurate with tissue requirements. Besides, studies suggest that corrugated structure of graphene offers desirable bio-mechanical cues for tissue regeneration. This review covers three important aspects of graphene-polymer composites, (a) the opportunity on reinforcing the polymer matrix with graphene, (b) challenges associated with limited aqueous processability of graphene, and (c) physiological signaling in the presence of graphene. Among numerous graphene materials, our discussion is limited to graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets. Challenges associated with limited dispersity of hydrophobic sheets within the polymeric matrix have been discussed at molecular level.

Tannin-derived micro-mesoporous carbons prepared by one-step activation with potassium oxalate and CO2

Micro-mesoporous carbons (MMCs) were successfully prepared using natural polyphenolic compounds, condensed tannins, and glyoxal, a nontoxic aldehyde, in lieu of synthetic phenolic compounds like formaldehyde and resorcinol as carbon precursors. Such MMCs were fabricated by a soft-templating strategy under mild conditions. Porosity development was achieved by varying the amount of potassium oxalate as an in-situ activator coupled with one-step CO₂ activation at 700 °C. This strategy allowed for the enhancement of microporosity as well as retention of the uniform mesoporous structure of the carbons. The CO₂ uptakes of 5.2 mmol/g at 0 °C and 3.6 mmol/g at 25 °C were achieved at 1 bar pressure for the tannin-derived activated MMC sample with a surface area of 1192 m²/g, a volume of fine micropores (sizes below 1 nm) of 0.33 cm³/g, and a mesopore volume of 0.49 cm³/g. This study opens new opportunities for a facile and green synthesis of MMCs from less toxic precursors with tailored porosity by synergistic effects of chemical and physical activation. The resulting MMCs exhibit the potential applicability not only as CO₂ sorbents but also in other environmental applications such as adsorption of organic volatile compounds and dye molecules, which require slightly larger pores.

Effects of compositions, chemical structures, and microporosity of sedimentary organic matter on degradation of benzo(a)pyrene by hydrogen peroxide

We investigated how the degradation of 7-¹⁴C-BaP aged in sediments by H₂O₂ treatment was influenced by the chemical structures, compositions, and microporosity of sedimentary organic carbon (SOC). Unstable OC (USOC), stable OC (STOC), mineral-protected OC (MOC), and chemically resistant OC (ROC) fractions were fractionated. The chemical structures and microporosity of the ROC fractions were characterized by ¹³C solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and CO₂ adsorption technique, respectively. A first-order, two-compartment kinetics model described the degradation process very well (R² > 0.980). The BaP degradation ratios increased with the increasing USOC contents and decreased with the increasing ROC contents. The BaP parent compound in the aqueous solution was almost completely degraded. The considerable portions of oxidized intermediates were detected in different SOC fractions, which represented either oxidized intermediates or parent compounds. The very good multivariate regressions among the degradation kinetics parameters, SOC structures and micropore volumes demonstrated that ROC-bulk, aliphatic moieties, and microporosity played crucial roles in protecting sorbed BaP from being degraded by H₂O₂. The results showed that ROC, aliphatic moieties, and microporosity played vital roles in Bap degradation process in sediments during H₂O₂ treatment, which is reported for the first time in this study.

Tailoring the textural properties of an activated carbon for enhancing its adsorption capacity towards diclofenac from aqueous solution

A series of activated carbons (ACs) were prepared by modifying a commercial AC by physical activation using CO₂ during different activation times. The ACs were designated as F, F12, F24, and F40 corresponding to the activation times of 0, 12, 24, and 40 h, respectively. The surface area, total pore volume, micropore volume, and mean micropore width were determined for all the ACs. The textural properties of the modified ACs increased substantially with the activation time, and the capacity of the ACs for adsorbing diclofenac (DCF) was almost linearly dependent upon the surface area of the ACS. The maximum adsorption capacities of F, F12, F24, and F40 carbons towards diclofenac (DCF) from aqueous solution were 271, 522, 821, and 1033 mg/g, respectively. Hence, the adsorption capacities of ACs were considerably enhanced with the activation time, and F12, F24, and F40 carbons presented the highest adsorption capacities towards DCF reported in the technical literature. The F40 adsorption capacity was at least twice those of other carbon materials. The adsorption capacities decreased by raising the pH from 7 to 11 due to electrostatic repulsion between the ACs surface and anionic DCF in solution. The removal of DCF from a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent was effectively carried out by adsorption on F40. Hence, the capacity of ACs for adsorbing DCF can be optimized by tailoring the porous structure of ACs.

Pre-osteoblast cell colonization of porous silicon substituted hydroxyapatite bioceramics: Influence of microporosity and macropore design

Silicate-substituted hydroxyapatite scaffolds containing multiscale porosity are manufactured. Model parts containing macropores of five cross-sectional geometries (circle, square, rhombus, star and triangle) and two sizes are shaped by microstereolithography. Three open microporosity contents (0.5, 23 or 37 vol%) are introduced in the ceramic. MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts are seeded onto these scaffolds. Analysis of cell colonization inside the macropores after 7 and 14 days of cultivation shows that the cellular filling is proportional to the macropore size and strongly influenced by macropore shape. Straight edges and convex surfaces are detrimental. High aspect ratios, the absence of reentrant angles and the presence of acute angles, by creating concavities and minimizing flat surfaces, facilitate cell colonization. Rhombus and triangle cross-sections are thus particularly favorable, while square and star geometries are the least favored. An increase in the microporosity content strongly impairs cell growth in the macropores. The data are statistically analyzed using a principal components analysis that shows that macro- and microtopographical parameters of scaffolds must be collectively considered with correlated interactions to understand cell behavior. The results indicate the important cell sensing of topography during the initial step of cell adhesion and proliferation and evidence the need for an optimized scaffold design.

Copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) metal-organic framework (MOF) and porous carbon composites as efficient carbon dioxide adsorbents

The development of novel porous materials for CO₂ capture and storage has received increasing attention due to the global warming problem. The aim of this work was to develop novel composites by merging Cu-BTC framework and porous carbon materials, including ordered mesoporous non-activated carbon (OMC), ordered mesoporous activated carbon (AC), and nitrogen-containing microporous carbon (NC) as efficient adsorbents for CO₂ capture. The morphology, porosity and surface area of the parent materials and composites were fully characterized. All resulting composites were identified as microporous materials with type I adsorption isotherm. During synthesis of these composites, additional micropores were formed in the interfacial region between heterogeneous phases, which greatly enhances both their specific surface area and porosity. As compared to the parent materials, namely carbons and Cu-BTC, the CO₂ uptake capability of the composites is greatly enhanced due to the presence of micropores at the interface. Specifically, NC-Cu-BTC composite exhibited the highest CO₂ capacity with ∼8.24 and ∼4.51 mmol/g under 1 bar at 0 and 25 °C, respectively. These novel porous carbon/MOF composites may have great potential for adsorption application including CO₂ capture.

A new microporous oxyfluorinated titanium(IV) phosphate as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the selective oxidation of cyclohexanone

Designing a new porous nanomaterial for eco-friendly catalytic reactions is very challenging. Here, a new crystalline microporous oxyfluorinated titanium phosphate material (TIPO-1) has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions in the absence of any structure directing agent. The triclinic crystalline phase with the unit cell parameters a=7.962Å, b=10.006Å, c=13.979Å, α=96.921°, β=95.851° and γ=93.760° has been indexed for TIPO-1 and it has been characterized through powder X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, XPS, FT-IR, ³¹P MAS NMR spectroscopy, UHR-TEM, FE-SEM and TGA/DTA analysis. The material exhibited excellent catalytic activity in liquid phase partial oxidation of cyclohexanone to adipic acid (up to 92% conversion) in the presence of aqueous H₂O₂ as oxidant together with value added side products like 1,6-hexandial and ε-caprolactone for reactions in different solvents. The material showed excellent recycling efficiency for six consecutive reaction cycles without any significant loss in catalytic activity.

Characterization of reactive flow-induced evolution of carbonate rocks using digital core analysis - part 2: Calculation of the evolution of percolation and transport properties

Percolation of reactive fluids in carbonate rocks affects the rock microstructure and hence changes the rock macroscopic properties. In Part 1 paper, we examined the voxel-wise evolution of microstructure of the rock in terms of mineral dissolution/detachment, mineral deposition, and unchanged regions. In the present work, we investigate the relationships between changes in two characteristic transport properties, i.e. permeability and electrical conductivity and two critical parameters of the pore phase, i.e. the fraction of the pore space connecting the inlet and outlet faces of the core sample and the critical pore-throat diameter. We calculate the aforementioned properties on the images of the sample, wherein a homogeneous modification of pore structure occurred in order to ensure the representativeness of the calculated transport properties at the core scale. From images, the evolution of pore connectivity and the potential role of micropores on the connectivity are quantified. It is found that the changing permeability and electrical conductivity distributions along the core length are generally in good agreement with the longitudinal evolution of macro-connected macroporosity and the critical pore-throat diameter. We incorporate microporosity into critical length and permeability calculations and show how microporosity locally plays a role in permeability. It is shown that the Katz-Thompson model reasonably predicts the post-alteration permeability in terms of pre-alteration simulated parameters. This suggests that the evolution of permeability and electrical conductivity of the studied complex carbonate core are controlled by the changes in the macro-connected macroporosity as well as the smallest pore-throats between the connected macropores.

Improved method for effective rock microporosity estimation using X-ray microtomography

Petrophysical analysis using X-ray microtomography provides key textural and compositional information, useful to investigate porous media characteristics of hydrocarbon and geothermal reservoirs. Several approaches, used for rock porosity estimation from tomography data, rely mainly on visual or mathematical segmentation algorithms that attempt to obtain thresholding values to segment a phase solved by pixel analysis resolution. Therefore, porosity is evaluated using only pores above pixel resolution (macroporosity), and dismiss pores sized less than the pixel resolution (microporosity) that can be essential to characterize permeability conditions of geothermal reservoirs. Here we propose an improved method to calculate the total effective porosity and simulate the absolute permeability of rock samples. This method combines the analysis of X-ray computed microtomography (μCT) with the interpretation of data using a powerful thresholding method that is based on the greyscale interclass variance. The 3D volume is segmented into three domains: solid, pores above resolution and, an intermediate region where each pore below resolution is linearly combined with solid matrix resulting in a grey scaled pixel equal to this combination. For the intermediate region, the microporosity was calculated employing a Matlab code that provides a new thresholding value containing pores, both above and below resolution (total porosity). Finally, by using this new calculated thresholding value the total effective porosity was obtained and an absolute permeability simulation was implemented only to the connected pores. Our results show that micropores contribute for nearly 50 percent of the total porosity and that microporosity plays a key role in estimating effective porosity, and assessing the geothermal potential of a rock reservoir.

Role of structure, accessibility and microporosity on sorption of phenanthrene and nonylphenol by sediments and their fractions

To better understand interaction mechanism of sediment organic matter with hydrophobic organic compounds, sorption of phenanthrene (Phen) and nonylphenol (NP) by bulk sediments and their fractions was investigated. Three surface sediments were selectively fractionated into different organic fractions, including the demineralized carbon (DM), lipid free carbon (LF), lipid (LP), and nonhydrolyzable carbon (NHC) fractions. The structure and microporosity of the isolated fractions were characterized by NMR and CO₂ adsorption techniques, and used as sorbents for Phen and NP. The calculated micropore volumes (V_o) and specific surface area (SSA) values are positively related to the concentrations of aromatic C and char for the DM, LF and NHC fractions, suggesting that aromatic moieties and char component significantly contribute to the microporosity. The LF fractions exhibit greater sorption affinity than the DM fractions do, indicating that the presence of LP could block the accessibility of sorption sites for Phen and NP. Significant and positive correlations among log K'_FOC values for Phen and NP and aromatic carbon and char contents, and V_o and SSA values suggest the aromatic moieties and microporosity dominate their sorption of HOCs by sediment organic matter (SOM). As the NHC fractions have much stronger sorption than other fractions do, they dominate the overall sorption by the bulk samples. This study indicated that the important roles of aromatic moieties, accessibility, and microporosity in the sorption of HOCs by SOM.

Micropore-induced capillarity enhances bone distribution in vivo in biphasic calcium phosphate scaffolds

The increasing demand for bone repair solutions calls for the development of efficacious bone scaffolds. Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) scaffolds with both macropores and micropores (MP) have improved healing compared to those with macropores and no micropores (NMP), but the role of micropores is unclear. Here, we evaluate capillarity induced by micropores as a mechanism that can affect bone growth in vivo. Three groups of cylindrical scaffolds were implanted in pig mandibles for three weeks: MP were implanted either dry (MP-Dry), or after submersion in phosphate buffered saline, which fills pores with fluid and therefore suppresses micropore-induced capillarity (MP-Wet); NMP were implanted dry. The amount and distribution of bone in the scaffolds were quantified using micro-computed tomography. MP-Dry had a more homogeneous bone distribution than MP-Wet, although the average bone volume fraction, BVF‾, was not significantly different for these two groups (0.45±0.03 and 0.37±0.03, respectively). There was no significant difference in the radial bone distribution of NMP and MP-Wet, but the BVF‾, of NMP was significantly lower among the three groups (0.25±0.02). These results suggest that micropore-induced capillarity enhances bone regeneration by improving the homogeneity of bone distribution in BCP scaffolds. The explicit design and use of capillarity in bone scaffolds may lead to more effective treatments of large and complex bone defects.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The increasing demand for bone repair calls for more efficacious bone scaffolds and calcium phosphate-based materials are considered suitable for this application. Macropores (>100μm) are necessary for bone ingrowth and vascularization. However, studies have shown that microporosity (<20μm) also enhances growth, but there is no consensus on the controlling mechanisms. In previous in vitro work, we suggested that micropore-induced capillarity had the potential to enhance bone growth in vivo. This work illustrates the positive effects of capillarity on bone regeneration in vivo; it demonstrates that micropore-induced capillarity significantly enhances the bone distribution in the scaffold. The results will impact the design of scaffolds to better exploit capillarity and improve treatments for large and load-bearing bone defects.

Characterization of reactive flow-induced evolution of carbonate rocks using digital core analysis- part 1: Assessment of pore-scale mineral dissolution and deposition

The application of X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) for quantitatively characterizing reactive-flow induced pore structure evolution including local particle detachment, displacement and deposition in carbonate rocks is investigated. In the studies conducted in this field of research, the experimental procedure has involved alternating steps of imaging and ex-situ core sample alteration. Practically, it is impossible to return the sample, with micron precision, to the same position and orientation. Furthermore, successive images of a sample in pre- and post-alteration states are usually taken at different conditions such as different scales, resolutions and signal-to-noise ratios. These conditions accompanying with subresolution features in the images make voxel-by-voxel comparisons of successive images problematic. In this paper, we first address the respective challenges in voxel-wise interpretation of successive images of carbonate rocks subject to reactive flow. Reactive coreflood in two carbonate cores with different rock types are considered. For the first rock, we used the experimental and imaging results published by Qajar et al. (2013) which showed a quasi-uniform dissolution regime. A similar reactive core flood was conducted in the second rock which resulted in wormhole-like dissolution regime. We particularly examine the major image processing operations such as transformation of images to the same grey-scale, noise filtering and segmentation thresholding and propose quantitative methods to evaluate the effectiveness of these operations in voxel-wise analysis of successive images of a sample. In the second part, we generalize the methodology based on the three-phase segmentation of normalized images, microporosity assignment and 2D histogram of image intensities to estimate grey-scale changes of individual image voxels for a general case where the greyscale images are segmented into arbitrary number of phases. The results show that local (voxel-based) porosity changes can be decomposed into local mineral dissolution and deposition. Moreover, it is found that the microporosity evolutions are differently distributed in the samples after the reactive coreflood experiments. In the last part of the paper, for the case of quasi-uniform dissolution, we combine the tomographic images with numerical calculations of permeability along the core to characterize the relationship between changes in permeability and the fractions of the mineral dissolved and deposited. A consistency is found between the calculated longitudinal permeability changes and the quantified distribution of mineral dissolved and deposited along the sample.

Enhanced removal of sulfonamide antibiotics by KOH-activated anthracite coal: Batch and fixed-bed studies

The presence of sulfonamide antibiotics in aquatic environments poses potential risks to human health and ecosystems. In the present study, a highly porous activated carbon was prepared by KOH activation of an anthracite coal (Anth-KOH), and its adsorption properties toward two sulfonamides (sulfamethoxazole and sulfapyridine) and three smaller-sized monoaromatics (phenol, 4-nitrophenol and 1,3-dinitrobenzene) were examined in both batch and fixed-bed adsorption experiments to probe the interplay between adsorbate molecular size and adsorbent pore structure. A commercial powder microporous activated carbon (PAC) and a commercial mesoporous carbon (CMK-3) possessing distinct pore properties were included as comparative adsorbents. Among the three adsorbents Anth-KOH exhibited the largest adsorption capacities for all test adsorbates (especially the two sulfonamides) in both batch mode and fixed-bed mode. After being normalized by the adsorbent surface area, the batch adsorption isotherms of sulfonamides on PAC and Anth-KOH were displaced upward relative to the isotherms on CMK-3, likely due to the micropore-filling effect facilitated by the microporosity of adsorbents. In the fixed-bed mode, the surface area-normalized adsorption capacities of Anth-KOH for sulfonamides were close to that of CMK-3, and higher than that of PAC. The irregular, closed micropores of PAC might impede the diffusion of the relatively large-sized sulfonamide molecules and in turn led to lowered fixed-bed adsorption capacities. The overall superior adsorption of sulfonamides on Anth-KOH can be attributed to its large specific surface area (2514 m(2)/g), high pore volume (1.23 cm(3)/g) and large micropore sizes (centered at 2.0 nm). These findings imply that KOH-activated anthracite coal is a promising adsorbent for the removal of sulfonamide antibiotics from aqueous solution.

Peri- and intra-implant bone response to microporous Ti coatings with surface modification

Bone growth on and into implants exhibiting substantial surface porosity is a promising strategy in order to improve the long-term stable fixation of bone implants. However, the reliability in clinical applications remains a point of discussion. Most attention has been dedicated to the role of macroporosity, leading to the general consensus of a minimal pore size of 50-100 μm in order to allow bone ingrowth. In this in vivo study, we assessed the feasibility of early bone ingrowth into a predominantly microporous Ti coating with an average thickness of 150 μm and the hypothesis of improving the bone response through surface modification of the porous coating. Implants were placed in the cortical bone of rabbit tibiae for periods of 2 and 4 weeks and evaluated histologically and histomorphometrically using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Bone with osteocytes encased in the mineralized matrix was found throughout the porous Ti coating up to the coating/substrate interface, highlighting that osseointegration of microporosities (<10 μm) was achievable. The bone trabeculae interweaved with the pore struts, establishing a large contact area which might enable an improved load transfer and stronger implant/bone interface. Furthermore, there was a clear interconnection with the surrounding cortical bone, suggesting that mechanical interlocking of the coating in the host bone in the long term is possible. When surface modifications inside the porous structure further reduced the interconnective pore size to the submicrometer level, bone ingrowth was impaired. On the other hand, application of a sol-gel-derived bioactive glass-ceramic coating without altering the pore characteristics was found to significantly improve bone regeneration around the coating, while still supporting bone ingrowth.
