Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the duration, timing, tempo, and synchronicity of puberty, as well as the correlation between timing and tempo of puberty. METHODS Overall, 15,819 of 22,439 invited children participated in the Puberty Cohort within the Danish National Birth Cohort. Participants completed a web-based questionnaire every 6 months through maturation with questions on current pubertal status. Girls reported current Tanner stage of breast and pubic hair development, and timing of menarche. Boys reported current Tanner stage of genital and pubic hair development, timing of first ejaculation, and vocal changes. While accounting for this interval-censored puberty information, we estimated the duration of puberty. Then, we used a nonlinear mixed effect growth model to estimate timing, tempo, synchronicity of puberty, and correlation between timing and tempo of puberty. RESULTS In girls, the average duration of breast development was longer, whereas the average tempo was slower than pubic hair development. The average timing of breast development was earlier than the average timing of pubic hair development. The majority of girls had asynchronous puberty. In boys, the average duration was longer and average tempo slower for genital than pubic hair development. The average timing of genital and pubic hair development were comparable; hence, the majority had synchronous pubertal development. Adolescents who had earlier timing also tended to have a faster tempo. DISCUSSION Being one of the largest puberty cohorts worldwide, these unique contemporary data can help physicians, parents, and children to understand and anticipate expected progression through pubertal development.

Abstract
Acephate is an organophosphate insecticide that exerts its toxicity by acting on the nervous system of insects. In addition to its action on the mammalian nervous system, acephate can also induce endocrine disruption of the reproductive system in mammals. However, the effects of acephate on sexual maturation and ovary development remain unclear. This study evaluated whether early-life exposure to acephate negatively impacts the male and female sexual maturation process and mature reproductive tissues. C57BL/6N mice were exposed to acephate (0, 0.3, 300 ppm) in drinking water from embryonic day 11.5 to ablactation, when the pups were four weeks old. Both sexes in the high-dose group experienced an early postnatal growth deficit, while females in the low-dose group continued to gain weight until 10 weeks of age. Exposure to acephate altered the anogenital index in females. Furthermore, preputial separation and vaginal opening were delayed in the high-dose group. At maturity, the weight of the seminal vesicles was decreased in the high-dose group. All treated groups exhibited increased vacuolation, accumulation of residual bodies, and degeneration in the testes. Furthermore, follicle regression was observed, and the healthy follicle number at each developmental stage was decreased in all treated groups. These results are probably due to the inhibition of the regulation by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and direct toxicity to reproductive organs. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that early-life exposure to acephate in mice may disrupt normal postnatal development, postpone puberty onset, and adversely affect reproductive functions during the reproductive period in both sexes.

Abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs), as post-transcriptional gene mediators, regulate the biological characteristics of spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs), including proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis. However, the potential roles and mechanisms by which miR-101-5p affected the biological characters of goat SSCs have not been fully elucidated. Herein, we reported that miR-101-5p overexpression decreased cell viability (P < 0.01), arrested cell cycle in the G1 phase (P < 0.05), and aggravated apoptosis of goat SSCs (P < 0.01) compared with negative control (NC), as determined by CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry analysis. Additionally, PCNA protein expression was attenuated by miR-101-5p overexpression (P < 0.05). Notably, the expression of SSCs specific genes Oct4 (P < 0.05), PLZF (P < 0.01) and DAZL (P < 0.01) were decreased in miR-101-5p overexpressed SSCs. Furthermore, the dual luciferase reporter assay showed that, when co-transfected with miR-101-5p mimics, the relative luciferase activity of EZH2 wide-type (WT) was inhibited (P < 0.05) compared with the transfection of EZH2 mutant (MUT). EZH2 expression was negatively correlated with miR-101-5p expression in goat SSCs. Collectively, our data implicates that miR-101-5p overexpression aggravates cell apoptosis, and suppresses cell proliferation of goat SSCs via targeting EZH2, which may impair spermatogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several non-persistent pesticides are endocrine disrupting chemicals and may impact on sexual maturation. OBJECTIVE To examine the association between urinary biomarkers of non-persistent pesticides and sexual maturation in adolescent males in the Environment and Childhood (INMA) Project. METHODS The metabolites of several pesticides were measured in spot urine samples collected from 201 boys aged 14-17 years, including: 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), metabolite of chlorpyrifos; 2-isopropyl-4-methyl-6-hydroxypyrimidine (IMPy), metabolite of diazinon; malathion diacid (MDA), metabolite of malathion; diethyl thiophosphate (DETP) and diethyl dithiophosphate, non-specific metabolites of organophosphates; 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) and dimethyl cyclopropane carboxylic acid, metabolites of pyrethroids; 1-naphthol (1-NPL), metabolite of carbaryl; and ethylene thiourea (ETU), metabolite of dithiocarbamate fungicides. Sexual maturation was assessed using Tanner stages, self-reported Pubertal Development Scale, and testicular volume (TV). Multivariate logistic regression was employed to examine associations between urinary pesticide metabolites and the odds of being in Tanner stage 5 of genital development (G5) or pubic hair growth (PH5); stage ≥4 of overall pubertal development, gonadarche, and adrenarche; or having mature TV (≥25 mL). RESULTS DETP concentrations>75th percentile (P75) were associated with lower odds of being in stage G5 (OR = 0.27; 95% CI = 0.10-0.70), detectable TCPy with lower odds of gonadal stage≥4 (OR = 0.50; 95% CI = 0.26-0.96), and intermediate detectable MDA concentrations (<P75) with lower odds of adrenal stage≥4 (OR = 0.32; 95% CI = 0.11-0.94). Conversely, detectable concentrations of 1-NPL were associated with higher odds of adrenal stage≥4 (OR = 2.61; 95% CI = 1.30-5.24) but lower odds of mature TV (OR = 0.42; 95% CI = 0.19-0.90). CONCLUSION Exposure to certain pesticides may be associated with delayed sexual maturity in adolescent males.

Abstract
Background The advent of highly-active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) has resulted in the survival of children with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) into adolescence. Their prolonged survival has translated into co-morbidities like endocrine deficiencies which may manifest as growth and pubertal delay. This study aimed to determine the physical growth and sexual maturation of perinatally HIV-infected adolescent males and compare them with those of age-matched HIV-negative controls. Methods We conducted a comparative cross-sectional study of 104 perinatally HIV-infected males on HAART aged 10 to 19 years, and 104 age-matched HIV-negative males who served as controls. The subjects and controls were enrolled and assessed at a Nigerian tertiary hospital over six months. Anthropometric measurements such as weight, height, and BMI were obtained and Z scores for age were derived for weight, height, and BMI to determine physical growth using WHO AnthroPlus software. Sexual maturation was assessed using the method proposed by Marshall and Tanner. Data analysis and appropriate statistics were conducted with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 Chicago IL. A p-value < 0.05 was adopted as the level of statistical significance. Results The mean height, weight, and BMI Z scores of the subjects were all lower than those of the controls. The difference between the mean weight of the subjects (44.60 ± 13.32 kg) and the controls (49.97 ± 13.58 kg) was statistically significant (t = 2.88, p = 0.004). Similarly, the difference between the mean BMI Z-scores of the subjects (-0.96 ± 1.95) and the controls (-0.10 ± 0.86) was statistically significant (t = 4.10, p = < 0.001). The subjects showed a delay in pubic hair and testicular development for Stages 1, 2, and 3. Duration of HAART did not significantly affect the BMI of subjects who were in three groups: undernutrition, normal nutrition, and overnutrition (Kruskal-Wallis test, p = 0.30). Conclusion Perinatal HIV infection negatively affects physical growth and the onset of pubic-hair development (PH 2) despite the duration of HAART. We recommend that screening for weight deficit or pubertal delay should form part of the management protocol for HIV-infected male children on HAART.

Abstract
We examined the consequences of high-fat diet (HFD) on prostate histophysiology in two periods along sexual maturation of rats and the impact on the gland in adulthood. After weaning, male Wistar rats were fed a balanced diet (4 % fat-C3, C6, C9) or a HFD (20 % fat- HF3, HF6, HF9) for 3, 6 or 9 weeks. Fat deposit weights, blood glucose and levels of serum testosterone and estrogen were measured. Prostate was evaluated for histology, proliferative and apoptotic cell index, and for the expression of androgen (AR), estrogen receptors type α (ERα) and aromatase. HFD did not affect estrogen levels and elevated serum testosterone only in HF9. HFD reduced prostate weight in HF6 and increased it in adulthood (HF9) but relative prostate weight was unchanged among groups. Cell proliferation, height and density were higher in epithelium of all HFD-groups, compared to controls, featuring the epithelial hyperplasia. Epithelial apoptosis was lower in HF9. HF3 and HF9 exhibited higher expressions of ERα, indicating that HFD triggers a new activation of ERα expression in the acinar epithelium. The content of prostatic aromatase was also elevated in HF9. Increased numbers of AR-positive cells were observed in all HFD groups, and western blotting analysis showed an increase in the truncated form of 45 kDa (AR45) and a reduction in the expression of 110 kDa-AR for HF3 and HF9. In conclusion, excessive dietary fats during sexual maturation of rats led to developmental programming of the prostate, inducing a hyperplastic status with perturbations in AR isoforms expression and reactivation of ERα in adulthood, whose implications for posterior prostatic health could be detrimental.

Abstract
The mechanisms regulating puberty still remain elusive, as do the underlying causes for sex differences in puberty onset (girls before boys) and pubertal disorders. Neuroendocrine puberty onset is signified by increased pulsatile GnRH secretion, yet how and when various upstream reproductive neural circuits change developmentally to govern this process is poorly understood. We previously reported day-by-day peri-pubertal increases (Kiss1, Tac2) or decreases (Rfrp) in hypothalamic gene expression of female mice, with several brain mRNA changes preceding external pubertal markers. However, similar pubertal measures in males were not previously reported. Here, to identify possible neural sex differences underlying sex differences in puberty onset, we analyzed peri-pubertal males and directly compared them with female littermates. Kiss1 expression in male mice increased over the peri-pubertal period in both the AVPV and ARC nuclei but with lower levels than in females at several ages. Likewise, Tac2 expression in the male ARC increased between juvenile and older peri-pubertal stages but with levels lower than females at most ages. By contrast, both DMN Rfrp expressionand Rfrp neuronal activation strongly decreased in males between juvenile and peri-pubertal stages, but with similar levels as females. Neither ARC KNDy neuronal activation nor Kiss1r expression in GnRH neurons differed between males and females or changed with age. These findings delineate several peri-pubertal changes in neural populations in developing males, with notable sex differences in kisspeptin and NKB neuron developmental patterns. Whether these peri-pubertal hypothalamic sex differences underlie sex differences in puberty onset deserves future investigation.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION HIV infection, through various mechanisms causes a derangement in sexual maturation. This study compared the Marshal and Tanner staging of HIV-infected and uninfected males. The aim of the study was to determine the sexual maturation in male children infected with HIV on HAART in Abakaliki. METHODS this was a cross-sectional and comparative study involving 80 HIV-infected boys aged 8-17 years and 80 uninfected counterparts matched for age and socio-economic class. Stages of sexual maturation (testicular size and pubic hair) were determined according to the method proposed by Marshall and Tanner. The testicular size was measured using an orchidometer. Data analysis was done with SPSS version 20. Structured questionnaire was used to collect information on socio-demographics. RESULTS assessment of pubic hair development, showed that 45 (56.2%) of the subjects were in the pre-pubertal stage compared to 27 (33.8%) among the controls, this relationship was statistically significant (p=0.005, OR = 2.5, C.I=1.3-4.8). The mean testicular volume among subjects was found to be 8.29 ± 8.26mls compared to 11.57 ± 8.26mls found in controls. This relationship was also statistically significant. There were significant statistical relationships between duration on HAART and clinical stages of disease with both pubic hair development and testicular volume of subjects and controls. CONCLUSION HIV-infected males had significantly delayed onset and progression of sexual maturation. Routine assessment of the sexual maturation of HIV-infected children as well as addressing the modifiable variables influencing sexual maturity is recommended.

Abstract
The Extended-One-Generation Study [EOGRTS, OECD 443] is a study in which the toxic effects of test substances on reproduction (Cohort 1), neurodevelopment (Cohort 2), and development of the immune system (Cohort 3) in rats are evaluated. The latter two Cohorts are not always required according to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) based on data from previously performed toxicity studies. Although the Cohorts for developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) and developmental immunotoxicity (DIT) are often omitted, the F1-animals normally required for these Cohorts are still maintained for evaluation of sexual maturation since three F1-animals/sex/litter/group are required according to OECD Guidance Document (GD) No. 151. This review investigates whether two F1-animals/sex/litter/group would suffice for this endpoint by investigating the rationale provided by the GD and by comparing results of eighteen EOGRTSs in which three versus two F1-animals/sex/litter/group were evaluated. After a comprehensive literature research, we concluded that the rationale in the GD does not substantiate the decision to use three F1-animals/sex/litter/group. The scientific papers provided as rationale focused on male observations and the observations discussed do not match the observations for sexual maturation mentioned by the guidelines. The investigation using data from eighteen EOGRTSs showed that the toxicological conclusions, whether the test substance affected sexual maturation or not, matched when comparing data of two F1-animals/sex/litter/group to three F1-animals/sex/litter/group. To conclude, two F1-animals/sex/litter/group would suffice for the evaluation of sexual maturation, which negates the requirement for a so called "Cohort 1 C" (i.e. 160 animals (80 males and 80 females)) per EOGRTS, as well as the number of regulated procedures that need to be performed.

Abstract
Natal dispersal is a milestone in an animal's life history, but its timing in developmental trajectories may differ between species. Although the two Pan species exhibit a similar pattern of female-biased dispersal, female bonobos (P. paniscus) leave their natal groups at an earlier age than female chimpanzees (P. troglodytes). As a preliminary step to explore the dispersal strategies of female bonobos, this study aimed to determine the relations of sexual swelling development, behavioral and hormonal activation, and first ovulation relative to dispersal timing. We measured levels of urinary estrone conjugates (E1C) and pregnanediol glucuronide (PdG) from 14 nulliparous females in wild bonobo groups at Wamba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and recorded their copulations with mature males. When close to dispersal, female bonobos exhibited swelling of the sexual skin (labia minora and perianal region) that did not reach the mature stage. Urinary E1C levels and copulation rates increased slightly before dispersal and greatly increased after dispersal. Ovulatory or gestatory signs implied by daily hormone profiles were not detected until one to two years after dispersal. Our findings indicate that female bonobos disperse at an early pubertal stage before ovulatory cycling is established. This earlier dispersal than sexual maturation could allow female bonobos to postpone reproduction-related energy costs until they become familiar with their new group or gain more time finding the group more suitable for successful reproduction in the future before actually settling. Further demographic and genetic data from dispersal to reproduction will help clarify their dispersal strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A large multicentre European study reported later onset of menopause among women residing in greener areas. This influence on the timing of a reproductive event like menopause, raises the question whether similar associations can be observed with timing of menarche. We investigated whether exposure to residential green space was related to the age at menarche in German and Australian adolescent girls. METHODS The analytic samples comprised of 1706 German and 1474 Australian adolescent girls. Percentage of green space was calculated in 1000 m buffers around a residential address or its surrogate at the previous follow-up. Mixed effects Cox proportional hazard models were used to explore the associations. The survival object was the occurrence of menarche at the time of follow-up (15-year follow-up of the German cohorts and the study wave at 14-15 years in the Australian cohort) and number of years since baseline (10-year follow-up in the German cohort and the study wave at 10-11 years in the Australian cohort). Participants who did not reach menarche were included as censored observations. RESULTS A greener residence was not associated with the age at menarche. Null findings were consistent in the general population and in analyses stratified by socioeconomic status or urbanicity in both countries. Urban residents were more likely to have earlier menarche, and this association was consistent across Germany and Australia. CONCLUSION The results of our analysis do not support the hypothesis that residing in places with more green space can influence timing of menarche. However, given the limitations of our study, researchers should not be discouraged to further explore environmental risk factors of early menarche.

Abstract
This study compared growth performance between female and male transgenic channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, containing channel catfish growth hormone full-length cDNA driven by the ocean pout antifreeze protein promoter, opAFP-ccGH, the rainbow trout metallothionein promoter, rtMT-ccGH, or both constructs, and their non-transgenic siblings in earthen ponds at 16 and 48 months of age. Body weight between the transgenic and their non-transgenic siblings differed (P < 0.001) at all ages. Transgenic F2 opAFP-ccGH grew 1.51- to 2.58-, F2 rtMT-ccGH grew 1.44- to 2.99- and F1fish transgenic for both constructs grew 1.36- to 2.92- fold larger than their non-transgenic sibling controls, depending upon age and sex. Body weight of the transgenic GH males was significantly higher than those of the transgenic GH females at 16 months of age (P < 0.001). However, body weight of the transgenic GH females was significantly higher (P < 0.001) compared with those of the transgenic GH males at 48 months of age, but not for the double transgenics (P > 0.05). In the case of non-transgenic GH siblings, males were larger than females at both 16 and 48 months of age (P < 0.001). Sexually dimorphic responses to GH transgenes were the opposite after sexual maturation. When critically low dissolved oxygen levels were encountered, survival of transgenic male and female opAFP-ccGH channel catfish was lower than that of controls (P = 0.004), as well as rtMT-ccGH females (P = 0.11), which is not surprising since the largest fish are most likely to succumb during an oxygen depletion.

Abstract
The classic definition of precocious sexual maturation is the development of secondary sexual characteristics before 8 years of age in girls and before 9 years of age in boys. It is classified as central precocious puberty when premature maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis occurs, and as peripheral precocious puberty when there is excessive secretion of sex hormones, independent of gonadotropin secretion. Precocious sexual maturation is more common in girls, generally central precocious puberty of idiopathic origin. In boys, it tends to be linked to central nervous system abnormalities. Clinical evaluation should include a detailed history and physical examination, including anthropometric measurements, calculation of growth velocity, and evaluation of secondary sexual characteristics. The main sign to suspect the onset of puberty is breast tissue development (thelarche) in girls and testicular enlargement (≥4 mL) in boys. Hormonal assessment and imaging are required for diagnosis and identification of the etiology. Genetic testing should be considered if there is a family history of precocious puberty or other clinical features suggestive of a genetic syndrome. Long-acting gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs are the standard of care for central precocious puberty management, while peripheral precocious puberty management depends on the etiology.Conclusion: The aim of this review is to address the epidemiology, etiology, clinical assessment, and management of precocious sexual maturation. What is Known: • The main sign to suspect the onset of puberty is breast tissue development (thelarche) in girls and testicular enlargement (≥4 mL) in boys. Abstract
To explore the physiological mechanisms that underlie age-related dopamine increases during sexual maturation in the brains of male honey bees, we focused on the expression of genes encoding the enzymes tyrosine hydroxylase (Amth) and DOPA decarboxylase (Amddc), which are involved in dopamine biosynthesis in the brain. We hypothesized that juvenile hormone in hemolymph and tyrosine intake from food known as factors enhancing brain dopamine levels might both control the expression of genes related to dopamine production, and we tested this hypothesis in experiments. The brain levels of tyrosine and DOPA, which are precursors of dopamine, decreased as males aged, whereas the dopamine levels increased, suggesting active metabolism of dopamine precursors. The relative expression levels of Amth and Amddc were significantly higher in the brains of 4-day-old males compared with 0-day-old males, and the higher level of Amddc was maintained after 8 days. Topical application of the juvenile hormone analog methoprene enhanced the expression levels of Amth and Amddc in the brains according to the methoprene concentration. Oral intake of tyrosine enhanced the tyrosine, DOPA and dopamine levels in the brain, and activated Amddc expression in the brain, suggesting that tyrosine intake can increase both substrates and enzyme for dopamine biosynthesis. These results support our hypothesis that juvenile hormone and tyrosine intake may enhance the expression levels of genes encoding enzymes involved in dopamine biosynthesis in male honey bee brains during sexual maturation.

Abstract
Isoflavones are a group of secondary metabolites found in plants belonging to the class of phytoestrogens. These, because they have a chemical structure similar to the endogenous hormone 17β-estradiol, act as endocrine disruptors over the different development window periods. This study aimed to evaluate male and female reproductive systems' responses when exposed to isoflavones during the development window. It is characterized as a bibliographic review, built after analyzing clinical and preclinical articles indexed in English, Portuguese, and Spanish published in the last ten years. The isoflavones, aglycone or glucosides, have essential therapeutic properties in the relief of postmenopausal symptoms in women, reduce the proliferation of cancers, in addition to being antioxidants. On the other hand, they can still behave in a similar way to 17β-estradiol, binding to hormone receptors and acting as endocrine disruptors over the gestational period until pre-puberty, negatively affecting the development of the reproductive system. The effects on reproduction are not dose-response but are influenced by the type of isoflavone and period. There are variations in the serum concentration of hormones and action on their negative feedback on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis in males. Reproductive functions are also affected by spermatogenesis, such as decreased sperm count, lower reproductive performance, reduced litter size, low sperm production, and reduced seminal vesicle size. In females, puberty is reached later, irregular estrous cycle, reduced weight of the ovary, uterus, lower serum levels of estradiol and progesterone, reduced fertility, or interrupted fertility. At the end of the analysis of the selected publications, it can be concluded that despite the beneficial therapeutic effects in the face of pathologies, the unknown consumption of doses and types of isoflavones in food can damage the development and reproduction of individuals. Therefore, further studies must be carried out to elucidate the usual safe doses of the analyzed phytoestrogen. Greater control over insertion in foods targeted at pediatric consumers should be implemented until we have adequate safety.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Short stature is the most frequent reason for consultation in Pediatric Endocrinology consultations and sometimes requires treatment with growth hormone. The aim of the study was to analyze the response to treatment based on its onset in pubertal or prepubertal stages and to analyze the possible benefit of an early onset. PATIENTS AND METHODS Longitudinal, retrospective and observational study in 139 patients treated for idiopathic growth hormone deficiency up to adult height. MAIN VARIABLES STUDIED (a) genetic background: maternal, paternal and genetic height; (b) perinatal history; (c) anthropometry during follow-up and at pubertal onset: weight, height, body mass index; (d) variables during follow-up and at pubertal onset: growth rate, bone age and growth prognosis. Final response variables: adult height, adult height with respect to target height, adult height with respect to initial growth prediction, adult height with respect to initial height at the start of treatment and adult height with respect to height at pubertal onset. RESULTS Total pubertal gain was 0.84±0.6 SD. 61.9% of the patients started treatment with rhGH in prepuberty. The initiation of treatment in the prepubertal stage and a higher total pubertal gain are correlated with a better final height (P=.001 and r=0.507, P=.00, respectively). Furthermore, a longer duration of treatment in pre-puberty is correlated with a better final response (r=0.328, P=.00). CONCLUSIONS The start of treatment in the prepubertal stage and its longer duration during this period are determining factors to achieve a good long-term response. Total pubertal gain was greater in patients who started treatment in the pubertal stage.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion pattern after gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAA) antagonist to determine the effects of the GABAergic system on LH secretion during reproductive maturation in pre-pubertal Nellore heifers. Nellore heifers (n = 10) were administered a picrotoxin injection of 0.18 mg/kg, i.v. Blood samples were collected every 15 min for 3 h at different developmental stages (8, 10, 14 and 17 mo of age). Plasma concentrations of LH were quantified using an RIA (sensitivity of 0.04 ng/mL and CV of 15 %). There was an interaction between treatment and age (P = 0.034). Picrotoxin-treated heifers had lesser (P ≤ 0.05) LH mean concentrations during a 3 h period at 10 and 17 mo of age compared to control heifers (P ≤ 0.05). Comparing the period before and after Picrotoxin injection in the same animals, there was a 33 % decrease in LH concentration at 8 mo of age (P = 0.0165). These results indicate the GABAergic system has a stimulatory function in inducing LH secretion in pre-pubertal Nellore heifers. These findings corroborate previous results that GABA increases GnRH/LH secretion in other species during the pre-pubertal period.

Abstract
Researches on gut microbiota in autism have mostly focused on children, but the dynamic changes of gut microbiota from weaning to adulthood were still not clear because of the difficulty of diagnosing autism. In this study, autistic-like rats indued by valproate (VPA) were tracked from weaning (end of breastfeeding; four weeks old) to sexual maturation (food; eight weeks old). Autistic-like rats were found to show obvious developmental disorders. During weaning, autistic-like rats only exhibited obvious repetitive stereotyped behaviors, but the autistic-like behaviors were fully apparent upon sexual maturation. Significant differences were observed between the gut microbiota of autistic-like and healthy rats across both age groups. The correlation analysis results revealed that the correlation between behaviors and some microbiota, especially Helicobacter, did not vary with age or diet. The total amount of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) decreased, butyric acid metabolism decreased, and propionic acid metabolism increased in the feces of autistic-like rats. The correlation between autistic-like behaviors and the butyric acid and propionic acid levels did not vary with diet or age. Inositol phosphate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis were significantly associated with autistic-like behaviors. Our results showed that although the microbiota and SCFAs related to autism were affected by age and diet, some remained consistent irrespective of age and diet, and they could be considered two of the factors related to autistic-like behaviors development.

Abstract
Purpose Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) has been used to treat short stature and rhGH-related syndromes. However, there are concerns that rhGH-treatment may cause precocious puberty. We investigated the effects of rhGH-treatment on the puberty onset, sexual maturation, androgen production, and hypothalamic gene expression in prepubertal male rats. Materials and Methods Sprague-Dawley male rats were injected subcutaneously daily with 1 or 2 IU/kg/d rhGH or 0.1 mL saline from postnatal day (PND) 21 to 30. At PND 31 bodyweight, reproductive organs weight, preputial separation, testis histology, circulating testosterone, and expression of testicular steroidogenic pathway genes and hypothalamic Kiss1 were examined. Results By day 4 of injection bodyweights of rhGH groups were significantly higher than those of controls. rhGH 2 IU group showed earlier preputial separation compared to the control group. At PND 31, the weights of testes, epididymides, seminal vesicles, prostates, and preputial glands of the 2 IU-rhGH group were significantly higher than control group. Serum testosterone levels of the 2 IU-rhGH group were significantly higher than control group. Testicular steroidogenic pathway gene Hsd17b3 and Nr5a1 mRNA and cell counts and areas of Leydig cells in rhGH groups were significantly higher than control group, suggesting functional differentiation of Leydig cells. Hypothalamic Kiss1 mRNA levels of the 1 IU-rhGH group were significantly lower than control group, suggesting negative feedback of Kiss1 by elevated testosterone. Conclusions Prepubertal rhGH-treatment in male rats may induce early onset of puberty, sexual maturation, elevation of testosterone, and spermatogenesis, and accompanies downregulation of hypothalamic KISS1.

Abstract
Tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripes, a commercially important long-distance migratory fish, return to specific spawning grounds for reproduction. To clarify reproductive neuroendocrine system of the tiger puffer, the changes in the expression levels of the genes encoding three gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRHs), gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH), GnIH receptor (GnIH-R), kisspeptin and kisspeptin receptor in the brain and gonadotropin (GTH) subunits, growth hormone (GH) and prolactin (PRL) in the pituitary were examined in the tiger puffer captured in the wild at different reproductive stages, namely immature and mature fish of both sexes, and post-ovulatory females that were obtained by hormonal treatment. The amounts of three gnrh mRNAs, gnih, gnih-r, fshb and lhb were substantially increased in the mature fish compared to the immature fish, especially in the females, and these augmented expressions were drastically decreased in the post-ovulatory females. gh expression showed a slight increase in the mature males. In contrast, kiss2, kiss2r and prl did not show significant changes in the males but significantly decreased in the post-ovulatory females. The present results demonstrate the expression dynamics of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis genes associated with the reproductive conditions and the possible involvement of the GnRH/GnIH/GTH system in the regulation of the sexual maturation and spawning in the wild tiger puffer.

Abstract
Background Important changes in microbial composition related to sexual maturation have been already reported in the gut of several vertebrates including mammals, amphibians and fish. Such changes in fish are linked to reproduction and growth during developmental stages, diet transitions and critical life events. We used amplicon (16S rRNA) high-throughput sequencing to characterize the skin and gill bacterial microbiota of farmed seabass and seabream belonging to three different developmental age groups: early and late juveniles and mature adults. We also assessed the impact of the surrounding estuarine water microbiota in shaping the fish skin and gill microbiota. Results Microbial diversity, composition and predicted metabolic functions varied across fish maturity stages. Alpha-diversity in the seabass microbiota varied significantly between age groups and was higher in older fish. Conversely, in the seabream, no significant differences were found in alpha-diversity between age groups. Microbial structure varied significantly across age groups; moreover, high structural variation was also observed within groups. Different bacterial metabolic pathways were predicted to be enriched in the microbiota of both species. Finally, we found that the water microbiota was significantly distinct from the fish microbiota across all the studied age groups, although a high percentage of ASVs was shared with the skin and gill microbiotas. Conclusions We report important microbial differences in composition and potential functionality across different ages of farmed seabass and seabream. These differences may be related to somatic growth and the onset of sexual maturation. Importantly, some of the inferred metabolic pathways could enhance the fish coping mechanisms during stressful conditions. Our results provide new evidence suggesting that growth and sexual maturation have an important role in shaping the microbiota of the fish external mucosae and highlight the importance of considering different life stages in microbiota studies. Abstract
Sex-biased dispersal is common in social species, but the dispersing sex may delay emigration if associated benefits are not immediately attainable. In the social Hymenoptera (ants, some bees and wasps), newly emerged males typically disperse from the natal nest whilst most females remain as philopatric helpers. However, little information exists on the mechanisms regulating male dispersal. Furthermore, the conservation of such mechanisms across the Hymenoptera and any role of sexual maturation are also relatively unknown. Through field observations and mark-recapture, we observed that males of the social paper wasp Polistes lanio emerge from pupation sexually immature, and delay dispersal from their natal nest for up to 7 days whilst undergoing sexual maturation. Delayed dispersal may benefit males by allowing them to mature in the safety of the nest and thus be more competitive in mating. We also demonstrate that both male dispersal and maturation are associated with juvenile hormone (JH), a key regulator of insect reproductive physiology and behaviour, which also has derived functions regulating social organisation in female Hymenoptera. Males treated with methoprene (a JH analogue) dispersed earlier and possessed significantly larger accessory glands than their age-matched controls. These results highlight the wide role of JH in social hymenopteran behaviour, with parallel ancestral functions in males and females, and raise new questions on the nature of selection for sex-biased dispersal.

Abstract
Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) is an ancestral molecule that was isolated from sheep hypothalamic extracts based on its action to stimulate cAMP production by pituitary cell cultures. PACAP is one of a number of ligands that coordinate with GnRH to control reproduction. While initially viewed as a hypothalamic releasing factor, PACAP and its receptors are widely distributed, and there is growing evidence that PACAP functions as a paracrine/autocrine regulator in the CNS, pituitary, gonads and placenta, among other tissues. This review will summarize current knowledge concerning the expression and function of PACAP in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis with special emphasis on its role in pituitary function in the fetus and newborn.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our study aimed to describe body phenotypes (BP) estimated by multivariate analysis and their association with body mass. DESIGN BP were defined based on demographic variables, anthropometric data (body mass, height, skinfolds and circumferences), body composition (phase angle measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis), biochemical parameters (TAG, glucose, total cholesterol ratio/LDL, Hb and sexual maturation (pubic hair and breasts or gonads). ANOVA was performed to verify the differences between skin colour and the stages of pubertal development, BP, body composition, anthropometric and biochemical variables. SETTING Cities of São Paulo-SP, Piracicaba-SP and Florianópolis-SC from Brazil and the United States. PARTICIPANTS 9269 adolescents aged between 10 and 15 years old. RESULTS The composition of BP was similar in all surveys, which are: BP1 was composed by skinfolds, body mass and circumferences variables; BP2 by pubic hair, breast in girls or gonad in boys, height and age; BP3 by cholesterol, TAG and glucose; and BP4 by phase angle, Hb and glucose (negative loading). There was a strong correlation (r = 0·9, P < 0·001) between BP1 and BMI. CONCLUSION We highlighted independence observed between biochemical parameters, anthropometry, body composition and sexual maturation. BP may support the calculation of scores for diagnosis of obesity based on anthropometric variables and overcome ambiguity in the isolated use of BMI.

BACKGROUND UV filters, widely used in personal care and industrial products, are being found in the environment and, in humans where with limited understanding on their potential health effects, especially during puberty. OBJECTIVES To examine the association between UV filter exposure and pubertal development in a prospective follow-up study. METHODS This study included 521 elementary and high school students from a suburban area of Shanghai. The initial study was done in October to November 2011; the follow-up study in April to May 2013. Twelve urinary organic UV filters were quantified, and the pubertal development was assessed at each study period by trained physicians using Tanner staging. We used (ordered) logistic regression model and multilevel mixed-effect (ordered) logistic regression model to assess cross-sectional and longitudinal effects between urinary concentration of five major UV filters and pubertal development of stages, onset and pace. RESULTS Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC) and its metabolite 4'-methoxyacetophenone (4'-MAP), two benzophenone derivatives (BP-2, BP-3) and Ethylhexyl dimethyl PABA (OD-PABA) were the most extensively detected UV filters in urine with geometric means (95% CI) in 2010 and 2012 as 1.77 (1.599, 1.956) and 2.28 (1.985, 2.622) ng/mL for EHMC; 4.55 (4.219, 4.907) and 5.26 (4.783, 5.775) ng/mL for 4'-MAP; 4.38 (4.011, 4.774) and 5.74 (5.023, 6.562) ng/mL for BP-2; 0.83 (0.760, 0.903) and 1.09 (0.967, 1.220) ng/mL for BP-3; 5.37 (4.949, 5.820) and 5.80 (5.193, 6.486) pg/mL for OD-PABA. Significant trend P-values (P < 0.05) include: EHMC and its metabolite were negatively correlated with stages of testicular volume and genital development; BP-3 was also negatively correlated with stages of testicular volume in boys, while OD-PABA positively correlated with stages of pubic hair and breast development in girls. Also, EHMC was associated with later pubertal onset of pubic hair and testicular volumes in boys, while OD-PABA correlated with earlier pubertal onset of breast development in girls. OD-PABA also significantly speeded up the progression of pubic hair and breast development in girls. DISCUSSION UV filters were extensively detected. Exposure to EHMC and BP-3 was significantly associated with later pubertal development in boys, and OD-PABA was associated with earlier pubertal development in girls. It demonstrates that the UV filters so widely used in personal care products and widely detected in environments are finding their way back into people where they are distorting endocrine function of adolescents.

Abstract
Enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) is a histone H3 lysine 27 (H3K27) methyltransferase that plays vital roles in mouse spermatogenesis. However, the expression pattern and role of EZH2 in goat spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) is unknown. In the present study, we investigated EZH2 expression in the testis of postpubertal goats and its effect on the biological characteristics of goat SSCs. We found that EZH2 mRNA (P < 0.01) and protein (P < 0.05) expression was increased in the testes of postpubertal goats compared to that of prepubertal goats. Moreover, EZH2 was more highly expressed in goat SSCs than in Leydig cells (P < 0.01) and Sertoli cells (P < 0.01) as determined by qPCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence. Compared to a negative control (NC), cell proliferation (P < 0.01) and viability (P < 0.01) were decreased in SSCs in which EZH2 was knocked down, and the G2/M phase of the cell cycle was blocked (P < 0.01), as determined by Edu staining, CCK-8 assay, and flow cytometry analysis. Additionally, the expression of CASP3, CASP9, and BAX was significantly increased (P < 0.01) while BCL2 expression was decreased (P < 0.01) in EZH2 knockdown SSCs. Notably, the expression of GDNF, a SSCs marker gene, and DAZL, a spermatogenesis-related gene, were significantly decreased (P < 0.01) while GFRA1 expression was significantly up-regulated (P < 0.01) in EZH2 knockdown SSCs. Our data suggest that EZH2 plays a pivotal role in the self-renewal of goat SSCs, and knockdown of EZH2 might impair spermatogenesis in goats.

Abstract
Nutritional geometry (NG) is a novel dietary analysis approach that considers nutrient balance, rather than single nutrient effects, on health and behaviour. Through NG, recent animal experiments have found that lifespan and reproduction are differentially altered by dietary macronutrient distribution. Epidemiological research using NG reports similar findings for human ageing. Yet, the relation of macronutrient balance to human reproduction, especially reproductive maturation, remains undefined. We studied the impact of childhood macronutrient intake on pubertal maturation, by applying NG to an Australian longitudinal adolescent dataset. Food records, collected at age 8 years from 142 pre-pubertal children (females, 92; males, 50), were analysed for absolute energy, percentage energy and energy-adjusted residuals from protein, carbohydrate and fat. Pubertal stage change (assessed at 8, 13 and 15 years) was modelled to obtain individual mathematical estimates of pubertal timing and tempo. Timing of menarche was recorded. The association of macronutrients to pubertal timing/tempo was assessed via NG, involving generalised additive models and heat maps to aid interpretation. Results showed lower dietary protein (relative to carbohydrate and fat) in girls consistently predicted earlier pubertal timing and menarche, and was related to faster pubertal tempo (all P < 0·05). No significant associations were identified in boys for both timing and tempo. Results suggest a role of non-protein macronutrients in facilitating female maturation; corroborating feeding and reproductive behaviour patterns observed in earlier NG studies of primates. Application of NG to other adolescent datasets is required to confirm the present findings. Such work would advance understanding of how nutrient balance shapes human development and health.

Abstract
PURPOSE We examined the mechanism by which neonatal immune stress reduces the sexual behavior of female rats in adulthood. METHODS Neonatal female rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: control (n = 11), postnatal day 10 lipopolysaccharide (PND10LPS) (n = 23), and PND25LPS (n = 11) groups, which received intraperitoneal injections of LPS (100 μg/kg) or saline on PND10 and 25. Daily inspections of the vaginal opening (VO) were performed from PND27 to PND37. Thereafter, the frequency of estrus was assessed for 15 days. Female rats (at 11-12 weeks of age) were placed in a cage with male rats, and their sexual behavior was monitored for 30 min. The hypothalamic mRNA expression levels of factors related to sexual behavior were examined via real-time PCR. RESULTS VO occurred later and the frequency of estrus was lower in the PND10LPS group compared to the control group. The number of lordosis behaviors and the total number of mounts performed by male partners were lower in the PND10LPS and PND25LPS groups than in the control group. Acceptability: The lordosis quotient and lordosis rating were lower in the PND10LPS group than in the control group. Proceptive behavior: the number of ear wiggling events was lower in the PND10LPS group than in the other groups, and the number of hops/darts was lower in the PND10LPS group than in the control group. The hypothalamic mRNA expression level of progesterone receptors (PR)A + B was lower in the PND10LPS group than in the control group, and the hypothalamic PRB mRNA expression level was lower in the PND10LPS and PND25LPS groups than in the control group. CONCLUSION Neonatal immune stress impeded sexual behavior and hypothalamic PR mRNA expression in female rats. Decreased progesterone activity in the hypothalamus might explain the reduction in sexual behavior seen in these rats.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Constitutional delay of growth and puberty (CDGP) is the most prevalent cause of delayed puberty in both sexes. Family history of delayed puberty (2 or more affected members in a family) has been evidenced in 50-75% of patients with CDGP and the inheritance is often consistent with autosomal dominant pattern, with or without complete penetrance. However, the molecular basis of CDGP is not completely understood. OBJECTIVE To characterize the clinical and genetic features of a CDGP cohort. METHODS Fifty-nine patients with CDGP (48 boys and 11 girls) underwent careful and long-term clinical evaluation. Genetic analysis was performed using a custom DNA target enrichment panel designed to capture 36 known and candidate genes implicated with pubertal development. RESULTS All patients had spontaneous or induced pubertal development (transient hormonal therapy) prior to 18 years of age. The mean clinical follow-up time was 46 ± 28 months. Male predominance (81%), short stature (91%), and family history of delayed puberty (59%) were the main clinical features of this CDGP -cohort. Genetic analyses revealed 15 rare heterozygous missense variants in 15 patients with CDGP (25%) in seven different genes (IGSF10, GHSR, CHD7, SPRY4, WDR11, SEMA3A,and IL17RD). IGSF10 and GHSR were the most prevalent affected genes in this group. CONCLUSIONS Several rare dominant variants in genes implicated with GnRH migration and metabolism were identified in a quarter of the patients with familial or sporadic CDGP, suggesting genetic heterogeneity in this frequent pediatric condition.

Abstract
Gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) is a multifunctional hypophysiotropic neurohormone and has a stimulatory role in the control of reproduction in the grass puffer. To clarify the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying the effect of changes in water temperature on reproduction in fish, we previously revealed that, in parallel to gonadal regression, both low and high temperature significantly decreased the expressions of the genes encoding kisspeptin (kiss2), kisspeptin receptor (kiss2r), gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (gnrh1) in the brain and gonadotropin (GTH) subunits (fshb and lhb) in the pituitary of sexually mature male grass puffer. In this study, we examined the changes in expression of gnih and GnIH receptor gene (gnihr) in the brain and pituitary along with the genes for growth hormone (gh) and prolactin (prl) in the pituitary of male grass puffer exposed to low temperature (14 °C), normal temperature (21 °C, as initial control) and high temperature (28 °C) conditions for 7 days. The levels of gnih and gnihr mRNAs were significantly decreased in both low and high temperature conditions compared to normal temperature in the brain and pituitary. Similarly, the gh mRNA levels were significantly decreased in both low and high temperature conditions. The prl mRNAs showed no significant changes at high temperature, whereas drastically decreased at low temperature possibly by dysfunctional cold stress. Taken together, the present results suggest that, in addition to the inhibitory effect of temperature changes on the Kiss2/GnRH1/GTH system, the suppression of GnIH/GH system may also be involved in the termination of reproduction by high temperature at the end of breeding season.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A key developmental transformation in the life of all vertebrates is the transition to sexual maturity, whereby individuals are capable of reproducing for the first time. In the farming of Atlantic salmon, early maturation prior to harvest size has serious negative production impacts. RESULTS We report genome wide association studies (GWAS) using fish measured for sexual maturation in freshwater or the marine environment. Genotypic data from a custom 50 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array was used to identify 13 significantly associated SNP for freshwater maturation with the most strongly associated on chromosomes 10 and 11. A higher number of associations (48) were detected for marine maturation, and the two peak loci were found to be the same for both traits. The number and broad distribution of GWAS hits confirmed a highly polygenetic nature, and GWAS performed separately within males and females revealed sex specific genetic behaviour for loci co-located with positional candidate genes phosphatidylinositol-binding clathrin assembly protein-like (picalm) and membrane-associated guanylate kinase, WW and PDZ domain-containing protein 2 (magi2). CONCLUSIONS The results extend earlier work and have implications for future applied breeding strategies to delay maturation in this important aquaculture species.

Abstract
Objectives To determine the influence of sexual maturation status on adiposity indicators of children and adolescents. Results 2412 individuals participated, 1285 (47.4%) males and 1408 (52.6%) females. There was moderate to weak correlation between age and adiposity indicators for both sexes. By analyzing the relationship between age and body fat indexes adjusted for Sexual Maturation Status, several changes were observed, mainly in girls. Precocious maturation was associated with increased adiposity indicators in girls, whereas late maturation was associated with decreased adiposity indicators in both sexes. Precocious maturation was associated with increased adiposity indicators in girls, whereas late maturation was associated with decreased adiposity indicators in both sexes. Abstract
The accessory gland (AG) produces seminal fluid proteins that are transferred to the female upon mating in many insects. These seminal fluid proteins often promote a male's post-copulatory reproductive success. Despite its crucial function many males eclose with a small gland not yet containing the full set of proteins. Thus, they need a physiological maturation period. Using Drosophila melanogaster, we tested whether this physiological maturation is linked to behavioral maturation in males and to what extent seminal fluid allocation patterns are influenced by physiological maturation. To that end, we measured AG protein content (as a proxy for physiological maturation) of young, immature males that were either successful in gaining a mating, but prevented from transferring seminal fluid proteins, or unsuccessful, thus using mating success as a proxy for behavioral maturation. Furthermore, we compared ejaculate allocation in immature and mature males in a single mating. Though mating success and gland maturation increase with male age, we found no evidence for a fine-tuned synchronization of behavioral and physiological maturation in males. This is especially surprising since we found reduced ejaculate allocation in very young, immature males, hinting at reduced fitness benefits from early matings in D. melanogaster.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disparity in the timing of biological events occurs across a variety of systems, yet the understanding of genetic basis underlying diverse phenologies remains limited. Variation in maturation timing occurs in steelhead trout, which has been associated with greb1L, an oestrogen target gene. Previous techniques that identified this gene only accounted for about 0.5-2.0% of the genome and solely investigated coastal populations, leaving uncertainty on the genetic basis of this trait and its prevalence across a larger geographic scale. RESULTS We used a three-tiered approach to interrogate the genomic basis of complex phenology in anadromous steelhead. First, fine scale mapping with 5.3 million SNPs from resequencing data covering 68% of the genome confirmed a 309-kb region consisting of four genes on chromosome 28, including greb1L, to be the genomic region of major effect for maturation timing. Second, broad-scale characterization of candidate greb1L genotypes across 59 populations revealed unexpected patterns in maturation phenology for inland fish migrating long distances relative to those in coastal streams. Finally, genotypes from 890 PIT-tag tracked steelhead determined associations with early versus late arrival to spawning grounds that were previously unknown. CONCLUSIONS This study clarifies the genetic bases for disparity in phenology observed in steelhead, determining an unanticipated trait association with premature versus mature arrival to spawning grounds and identifying multiple candidate genes potentially contributing to this variation from a single genomic region of major effect. This illustrates how dense genome mapping and detailed phenotypic characterization can clarify genotype to phenotype associations across geographic ranges of species.

Abstract
Background Naked mole-rats (NMRs) are eusocially organized in colonies. Although breeders carry the additional metabolic load of reproduction, they are extremely long-lived and remain fertile throughout their lifespan. This phenomenon contrasts the disposable soma theory of aging stating that organisms can invest their resources either in somatic maintenance, enabling a longer lifespan, or in reproduction, at the cost of longevity. Here, we present a comparative transcriptome analysis of breeders vs. non-breeders of the eusocial, long-lived NMR vs. the polygynous and shorter-lived guinea pig (GP). Results Comparative transcriptome analysis of tissue samples from ten organs showed, in contrast to GPs, low levels of differentiation between sexes in adult NMR non-breeders. After transition into breeders, NMR transcriptomes are markedly sex-specific, show pronounced feedback signaling via gonadal steroids, and have similarities to reproductive phenotypes in African cichlid fish, which also exhibit social status changes between dominant and subordinate phenotypes. Further, NMRs show functional enrichment of status-related expression differences associated with aging. Lipid metabolism and oxidative phosphorylation—molecular networks known to be linked to aging—were identified among most affected gene sets. Remarkably and in contrast to GPs, transcriptome patterns associated with longevity are reinforced in NMR breeders. Conclusion Our results provide comprehensive and unbiased molecular insights into interspecies differences between NMRs and GPs, both in sexual maturation and in the impact of reproduction on longevity. We present molecular evidence that sexual maturation in NMRs is socially suppressed. In agreement with evolutionary theories of aging in eusocial organisms, we have identified transcriptome patterns in NMR breeders that—in contrast to the disposable soma theory of aging—may slow down aging rates and potentially contribute to their exceptional long life- and healthspan. Abstract
The males of different species of Bactrocera and Zeugodacus fruit flies are commonly attracted to plant-derived phenylpropanoids (e.g. methyl eugenol (ME)) or phenylbutanoids (e.g. raspberry ketone (RK)) but almost never to both. However, one particular plant-derived phenylbutanoid, zingerone (ZN), which possesses an intermediate chemical structure between ME and RK, weakly attracts both ME- and RK-responding fruit fly species. Bactrocera jarvisi, an Australian fruit fly species, is weakly attracted to cue lure (an analogue of RK) but strongly attracted to ZN. Here, we investigated the minimum olfactory threshold and optimum sensitivity of B. jarvisi males to ZN and RK as a function of dose, time and sexual maturation. Our results show that B. jarvisi males had a marked preferential response to ZN, with a much lower olfactory threshold and faster response time to ZN than RK. Probit analysis demonstrated that ZN was at least >1600× more potent than RK as a male attractant to B. jarvisi. Although fruit fly male attraction to the phytochemicals is generally associated with sexual maturity, in B. jarvisi immature males were also attracted to ZN. Our results suggest that B. jarvisi males have a fine-tuned olfactory response to ZN, which appears to play a central role in the chemical ecology of this species.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study is to evaluate sexual maturation, attitudes toward sexual maturity, and body esteem in the sexual development of Korean elementary-school boys and girls. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 399 fifth and sixth graders (192 boys and 207 girls). The data were analysed with a χ2 test, t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficients. RESULTS Among the 207 girls, 70.5% had pubic hair growth, 68.1% had breast development, and 56.0% had a menstrual period. In boys, 59.4% of the 192 subjects experienced the development of external genitalia and 52.6% had pubic hair growth. Sexual maturation was related to grade (boys, t=7.07, p=.008; girls, t=12.76, p < .001), age (t=-2.20, p=.030; t=-4.11, p < .001), height (t=-5.16, p < .001; t=-7.52, p < .001), and weight (t=-2.89, p=.004; t=-5.19, p < .001) in both boys and girls. Girls were more likely to have sexual maturity than boys (χ2=22.29, p < .001). Boys showed more positive attitudes toward sexual maturity (t=2.10, p=.036) and higher body esteem (t=2.12, p=.035) than girls. CONCLUSION This study shows that sexual maturation, attitude toward sexual maturity, and body esteem in sexual development differ between boys and girls. The findings indicate that it is necessary to develop a tailored sex-education program according to the sex of elementary-school children.

Abstract
This study provides the characterization and tissue distribution of a β2-AR in the female European eel during silvering, aiming to better understand the adrenergic system involvement in this critical maturation event. A putative β2-AR (ADRB2) mRNA was cloned and sequenced. Amino acid residues and motifs important for ligand binding are generally conserved across fish and between fish and mammals, although the occurrence of some sequence variabilities may explain the noted peculiarities of eel AR interaction with pharmacological ligands. The tissue distribution of the ADRB2 gene product was analyzed in five tissues of the eel at different silvering stages and compared with that of the ADRA1 mRNA encoding an α1-AR subtype. On the whole, data suggested that relative ADRA1/ADRB2 tissue expression across silvering is part of the preparatory (molecular) adjustments required to face changes in habitats and migration efforts.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated maturation-associated changes in non-specific immune responses of ayu against Flavobacterium psychrophilum. The gonadosomatic index was minimum on 16 June, began to increase on 17 July, and reached the maximum value during August. The highest phagocytic rate (16.3%) was observed on 16 June, which decreased significantly to 5.6% on 26 August. The number of viable bacteria after the serum treatment was highest during August, suggesting that bactericidal activity of the serum decreased along with the sexual maturation. Gene expression levels of interleukin-8, and tumor necrosis factor-α in the spleen did not change significantly during this period, whereas the level of suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS)3 was significantly higher on 26 August than that on 16 July (p < 0.05). These results suggest that phagocytic activity of trunk kidney leukocytes and serum bactericidal activity against F. psychrophilum decreased with sexual maturation, and that SOCS3 may be related to the decrease in non-specific immune activity in ayu.

Abstract
AIM This study assessed the validity and reliability of the Ekblom-Bak (EB) submaximal cycle test in adolescents and identified any sex- or maturity-related factors for prediction errors. METHODS We recruited 50 healthy subjects through a public announcement in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2016. The 27 boys and 23 girls were aged 10-15 years and in Tanner stages I-IV. They performed an EB test and incremental treadmill running test for direct measurement of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max). RESULTS The estimation error of VO2 max was 0.09 L/min. The correlation (r) was 0.86, and the standard error of the estimate (SEE) was 0.29 L/min. The largest overestimation was seen in prepubertal boys (0.49 L/min). The best precision of the EB test was achieved when boys in Tanner stages I and II were re-calculated using the prediction equation developed for adult women. This yielded a mean difference of -0.05 L/min, r = 0.92 and SEE 0.23 L/min, in the entire sample. The prediction error was lowered in boys, but not girls, with increasing pubertal maturity. CONCLUSION The EB test was reasonably valid in adolescents, seemed to be related to sex and maturity status, and our findings support its use.

Abstract
An experimental contraceptive vaccine was evaluated in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). A peptide derived from the beta subunit of luteinizing hormone (LH) was conjugated to two different carrier proteins, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH), and formulated with one of four immunostimulants in a water-in-oil emulsion. Specific antibody responses to the peptide and each carrier protein were evaluated. While the antibody response to KLH was stronger than the response to BSA, both carrier proteins stimulated comparable antibody responses to the LH peptide. The immunostimulant proved to be more important for enhancing the LH peptide antibody response than the carrier protein selection; vaccines containing a combination of Aeromonas salmonicida and Vibrio anguillarum stimulated significantly greater LH peptide antibody production than any of the other three immunostimulants evaluated at 12 weeks post-vaccination. This study provides proof-of-concept for specific antibody production against a hapten-carrier protein antigen in Atlantic salmon and reinforces the importance of vaccine immunostimulant selection.

Abstract
While pheromone traps have been effectively used to monitor the recent range expansion of the western bean cutworm (WBC), very little is known about the pheromone mediated reproductive biology of this species. The age at which females initiated calling (the behaviour associated with the release of the sex pheromone), and the pattern of calling on the first three nights following sexual maturation were determined for virgin females held under four temperature regimes (25:20; 25:15; 20:15; 20:10 °C L:D and 16L:8D photoperiod), and two RH (60 and 80%). Regardless of the rearing conditions the pre-calling period (PCP) was always several days post emergence, supporting the hypothesis that WCB is a migrant species. However, surprisingly the length of the PCP was not directly related to mean temperature but rather to the temperature differential between the photophase and the scotophase. The duration of calling increased with female age, but unlike in other moths was not affected by the abiotic factors tested. The relative insensitivity to temperature and humidity, when compared with many other moth species, may be related to the WBC being a univoltine species with a mid-summer flight period. Consequently, there would not be strong selection pressure for plasticity in calling behavior when compared with the case of multivoltine species that experience a wide range of environmental conditions during different seasonal flight periods.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that kisspeptin neurons are important mediators of prolactin's effects on reproduction. However, the cellular mechanisms recruited by prolactin to affect kisspeptin neurons remain unknown. Using whole-cell patch-clamp recordings of brain slices from kisspeptin reporter mice, we observed that 20% of kisspeptin neurons in the anteroventral periventricular nucleus was indirectly depolarized by prolactin via an unknown population of prolactin responsive neurons. This effect required the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase signaling pathway. No effects on the activity of arcuate kisspeptin neurons were observed, despite a high percentage (70%) of arcuate neurons expressing prolactin-induced STAT5 phosphorylation. To determine whether STAT5 expression in kisspeptin cells regulates reproduction, mice carrying Stat5a/b inactivation specifically in kisspeptin cells were generated. These mutants exhibited an early onset of estrous cyclicity, indicating that STAT5 transcription factors exert an inhibitory effect on the timing of puberty.

Abstract
Sexual maturity rating (SMR) is important in population studies and in clinical care. Pubertal staging allows doctors to assess the maturation of adolescents to correlate several pubertal phenomena such as age at menarche, growth spurt and final height, to advise and manage patients appropriately and to have sensitive "sensors" of the effects of environmental exposure on human populations. The commonly used markers of the timing of female puberty are thelarche and menarche. Appearance of the breast bud is the first indicator of puberty onset in 90% of girls. Assessment of thelarche may be performed by a physician with expertise in adolescents or by self-assessment, in which the adolescent identifies her stage of maturation based on Tanner's photographs/illustrations. The assessment of Tanner stages by professionals provides more reliable information than self-assessment but may involve variations between observers. Tanner self-assessment has been proposed as an alternative in various studies. Some studies have found reasonable agreement between self-assessment and examination by a physician whereas others found discrepancies. Measuring nipple and areola diameters is feasible for sexual maturation staging. Both sizes show a significant increase during pubertal development and after menarche. However, the ratings using nipple/areola method need to be analyzed to establish their degree of concordance with standard techniques and other markers of development in girls.

Abstract
In the past few decades, there has been an overwhelming increase in childhood and adolescent obesity worldwide. Besides the well recognized cardiometabolic complications and other physical conditions associated with obesity, during adolescence, it causes psychological and social distress in a period of life that is already sensitive for a girl. This in turn increases their risk of low self-esteem and depression. Furthermore, obesity diminishes health-related quality of life and years of life. Overweight and obese teenagers are more likely to have gynecologic and obstetric complications, during adolescence and also later in life. Consequences of obese and overweight childhood and adolescence include sexual maturation and reproductive dysfunction, alterations in menstruation, dysmenorrhea, risky sexual behavior, and inefficient use of contraception, polycystic ovary syndrome, bone density abnormalities, macromastia, and an increased risk of breast and endometrial cancer. Obese adolescents are at greater risk of pregnancy and perinatal complications, such as preeclampsia, gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, primary cesarean delivery, and induction of labor, to mention a few. Evidence shows that infants born to obese teenagers are also more likely to have complications including preterm or post-term delivery, small-for-gestational age newborns, macrosomia, meconium aspiration, respiratory distress, and even stillbirth, among others. This comprehensive review focuses on the gynecological and obstetric consequences of obesity in adolescent girls.

methylation levels were detected at approximately 100 CpGs. We confirmed the different DNA methylation levels of CpG sites by using combined bisulfite restriction analysis (COBRA); five of the CpG sites reflected methylation
levels similar to those detected by the microarray. One of the CpG sites was thought to reflect an age-related increase in methylation levels, which was confirmed by COBRA and bisulfite sequencing. However, the relationship

Abstract
Water temperature is an environmental factor of primary importance that influences reproductive function in fish. To understand the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying the regulation of reproduction by temperature, we examined changes in expression of genes encoding kisspeptin (kiss2), kisspeptin receptor (kiss2r) and three gonadotropin-releasing hormones (gnrh1, gnrh2 and gnrh3) in the brain and genes encoding gonadotropin (GTH) subunits (gpa, fshb and lhb) in the pituitary of grass puffer exposed to a low temperature (14°C), normal temperature (21°C) and high temperature (28°C) for 7days. In addition, the plasma levels of cortisol were examined after exposed to three temperature conditions. The gonadosomatic index was significantly decreased in both low and high temperature conditions. The levels of kiss2 and kiss2r mRNAs were significantly decreased at both low and high temperature conditions compared to normal temperature (control) condition. gnrh1 but not gnrh2 were significantly decreased in both temperature conditions, while gnrh3 showed a decreasing tendency in low temperature. Consequently, the levels of fshb and lhb mRNAs were significantly decreased in both low and high temperature conditions. Interestingly, the plasma levels of cortisol were significantly increased in low temperature but remain unchanged in high temperature, suggesting that the fish were under stress in the low temperature conditions but not in the high temperature conditions. Taken together, the present results indicate that anomalous temperature have an inhibitory effect on reproductive function through suppressing kiss2/kiss2r/gnrh1/fshb and lhb expression and these changes may occur in a normal physiological response as well as in a malfunctional stress response.

This could explain the reduction in IPNV prevalence previously observed in broodfish at the time of ova/milt stripping. Abstract
The German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is an excellent model omnivore for studying the effect of foraging effort on nutrient balancing behavior and physiology, and its consequences for performance. We investigated the effect of foraging distance on individual German cockroaches by providing two foods differing in protein-to-carbohydrate ratio at opposite ends of long containers or adjacent to each other in short containers. Each food was nutritionally imbalanced, but the two foods were nutritionally complementary, allowing optimal foraging by selective feeding from both foods. We measured nutrient-specific consumption in fifth instar nymphs and newly eclosed females foraging at the two distances, hypothesizing that individuals foraging over longer distance would select more carbohydrate-biased diets to compensate for the energetic cost of locomotion. We then determined dry mass growth and lipid accumulation in the nymphs as well as mass gain and the length of basal oocytes in the adult females as an estimate of sexual maturation. Nymphs foraging over longer distance accumulated less lipid relative to total dry mass growth, but contrary to our predictions, their protein intake was higher and they accumulated more structural mass. In concordance, adult females foraging over longer distance gained more body mass and matured their oocytes faster. Our results show a positive effect of foraging distance on fitness-related parameters at two life stages, in both cases involving increased consumption of specific nutrients corresponding to requirements at the respective life stage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clonorchis sinensis causes a major food-borne helminthic infection. This species locates in mammalian hepatobiliary ducts, where oxidative stressors and hydrophobic substances are profuse. To adapt to the hostile micromilieu and to ensure its long-term survival, the parasite continuously produces a diverse repertoire of antioxidant enzymes including several species of glutathione transferases (GSTs). Helminth GSTs play pertinent roles during sequestration of harmful xenobiotics since most helminths lack the cytochrome P-450 detoxifying enzyme. METHODS We isolated and analyzed the biochemical properties of two omega-class GSTs of C. sinensis (CsGSTo1 and CsGSTo2). We observed spatiotemporal expression patterns in accordance with the maturation of the worm's reproductive system. Possible biological protective roles of CsGSTos in these organs under oxidative stress were investigated. RESULTS The full-length cDNAs of CsGSTo1 and 2 constituted 965 bp and 1,061 bp with open reading frames of 737 bp (246 amino acids) and 669 bp (223 amino acids). They harbored characteristic N-terminal thioredoxin-like and C-terminal α-helical domains. A cysteine residue, which constituted omega-class specific active site, and the glutathione-binding amino acids, were recognized in appropriate positions. They shared 44 % sequence identity with each other and 14.8-44.8 % with orthologues/homologues from other organisms. Bacterially expressed recombinant proteins (rCsGSTo1 and 2) exhibited dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and thioltransferase activities. DHAR activity was higher than thioltransferase activity. They showed weak canonical GST activity toward 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene. S-hexylglutathione potently and competitively inhibited the active-site at nanomolar concentrations (0.63 and 0.58 nM for rCsGSTo1 and 2). Interestingly, rCsGSTos exhibited high enzyme activity toward mu- and theta-class GST specific substrate, 4-nitrobenzyl chloride. Expression of CsGSTo transcripts and proteins increased beginning in 2-week-old juveniles and reached their highest levels in 4-week-old adults. The proteins were mainly expressed in the elements of the reproductive system, such as vitelline follicles, testes, seminal receptacle, sperm and eggs. Oxidative stressors induced upregulated expression of CsGSTos in these organs. Regardless of oxidative stresses, CsGSTos continued to be highly expressed in eggs. CsGSTo1 or 2 overexpressing bacteria demonstrated high resistance under oxidative killing. CONCLUSIONS CsGSTos might be critically involved in protection of the reproductive system during maturation of C. sinensis worms and in response to oxidative conditions, thereby contributing to maintenance of parasite fecundity.
