Abstract
Platelet-activating factor (PAF) plays a significant role in several leucocyte functions, including platelet aggregation and inflammation. Additionally, PAF has a role in the behavioral and physiological changes in mammals. However, the effect of PAF has not been well studied in birds. Therefore, the study aimed to determine if PAF affects feeding behavior, voluntary activity, cloacal temperature, and feed passage through the digestive tract in chicks (Gallus gallus). We also studied the involvement of PAF in the innate immune system induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a cell wall component of gram-negative bacteria. Both intraperitoneal (IP) and intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of PAF significantly decreased food intake. IP injection of PAF significantly decreased voluntary activity and slowed the feed passage from the crop, whereas ICV injection had no effect. Conversely, ICV injection of PAF significantly increased the cloacal temperature, but IP injection had no effect. The IP injection of LPS significantly reduced the mRNA expression of lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 2, an enzyme responsible for PAF production in the heart and pancreas. On the other hand, LPS significantly increased the mRNA expression of the PAF receptor in the peripheral organs. The present study shows that PAF influences behavioral and physiological responses and is related to the response against bacterial infections in chicks.

Abstract
Seasonal activation of the vertebrate hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and gonadal development is initiated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone-I (GnRH) release from the hypothalamus. In photoperiodic species, the consistent annual change in photoperiod is the primary environmental signal affecting GnRH cell activity, including changes in the synthesis and secretion of this neuropeptide. Non-photoperiodic environmental cues such as energy availability also influence HPG axis activity, but the mechanisms mediating this influence, in particular on the GnRH system, are unclear. Understanding how the neuroendocrine system integrates environmental information is critical in determining the plasticity and adaptability of physiological responses to changing environments. The primary objective of this study was to investigate GnRH-mediated changes in HPG axis activity and gonadal development in response to energy availability in a wild bird. We hypothesized that negative energy balance inhibits HPG axis activity by affecting GnRH secretion. Moderate food restriction for several weeks in male house finches, Haemorhous mexicanus, decreased body condition and inhibited photoinduced testicular growth compared to birds fed ad libitum. Food restriction did not affect plasma luteinizing hormone (LH; a correlate of GnRH release) or plasma testosterone, but it enhanced the plasma LH response to an injection of the glutamatergic agonist, N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). Thus, food restriction may decrease photoinduced HPG axis activation by acting centrally, in particular by attenuating the release of accumulated GnRH stores.

Abstract
Experiments were performed with the aim of determining the effect of melatonin administration on diurnal fluctuations in cloacal temperature (CT) of Marshall broiler chickens during the hot dry season. Birds in group I (12L:12D cycle) were raised under natural photoperiod of 12-h light and 12-h darkness, without melatonin supplementation, while those in group II (LL) were kept under 24-h continuous lighting, without melatonin administration. Broiler chickens in group III (LL + melatonin) were raised under 24-h continuous lighting, with melatonin supplementation at 0.5 mg/kg per os. The cloacal temperatures of 15 labeled broiler chickens from each group were measured at 6:00, 13:00, and 19:00 h, 7 days apart, from days 14-42. Temperature-humidity index was highest at day 14 of the study, with the value of 36.72 ± 0.82 °C but lowest at day 28 with the value of 30.91 ± 0.80 °C (P < 0.0001). The overall mean hourly cloacal temperature value of 41.51 ± 0.03 °C obtained in the 12L:12D cycle birds was significantly higher (P < 0.001) than the value of 41.16 ± 0.03 °C recorded in the melatonin-treated group but lower than that of 41.65 ± 0.03 °C obtained in the LL birds. Mortality due to hyperthermia commenced at day 28 in both 12L:12D cycle and LL broiler chickens but was delayed till day 42 in LL + MEL broiler chickens. In conclusion, melatonin administration alleviated the deleterious effects of heat stress on broiler chickens by maintaining their cloacal temperature at relatively low values.

Abstract
Photoperiod is the most important "noise-free" seasonal environmental cue for synchronizing physiological states (such as reproductive activity) in birds. However, in photoperiodic birds such as Japanese quail, the effect of photoperiod on adrenocortical activity remains unclear, particularly in males with differences in cloacal gland photoresponsiveness. At 8 wk of age, birds (n = 55) were either assigned to a short photoperiod (8L:16D; SD) or maintained under long photoperiod (16L:8D; LD; control). After 5 wk of SD exposure, males were classified as nonresponsive (SD-NR; with foam production) or responsive (SD-R; with no foam production) to short days, depending on the cloacal gland volume was above or below 1,000 mm(3). At 14 wk of age, droppings were collected during 3 consecutive days to determine corticosterone (CMs) and androgen metabolites (AMs) by enzyme immunoassays. Male Japanese quail under LD showed significantly higher concentrations of CMs (300 ± 10 ng/g) and AMs (1,257 ± 115 ng/g) than birds kept under SD. Under short days, SD-NR and SD-R showed differences (P < 0.0001), both in CM (153 ± 8 ng/g and 98 ± 6 ng/g, respectively) and AM concentrations (1,294 ± 309 ng/g and 275 ± 53 ng/g, respectively). Interestingly, although SD-NR males exhibited no cloacal gland arrest (according to cloacal gland volume and foam production) and similar testicular activity (AM values) to LD males, they showed lower concentrations of CMs compared with males that remained on LD (P < 0.05). Our findings suggest length of photoperiod affected hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal activity; however, that was not the only factor involved, because birds subjected to shorter days but whose hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis failed to respond had intermediate CM values. Further research is required to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of this interesting finding.

Abstract
Sexual behavior can be usefully parsed into an appetitive and a consummatory component. Both appetitive and consummatory male-typical sexual behaviors (respectively, ASB and CSB) are activated in male Japanese quail by testosterone (T) acting in the medial preoptic nucleus (POM), but never observed in females. This sex difference is based on a demasculinization (= organizational effect) by estradiol during embryonic life for CSB, but a differential activation by T in adulthood for ASB. Males expressing rhythmic cloacal sphincter movements (RCSMs; a form of ASB) or allowed to copulate display increased Fos expression in POM. We investigated Fos brain responses in females exposed to behavioral tests after various endocrine treatments. T-treated females displayed RCSM, but never copulated when exposed to another female. Accordingly they showed an increased Fos expression in POM after ASB but not CSB tests. Females treated with the aromatase inhibitor Vorozole in ovo and T in adulthood displayed both male-typical ASB and CSB, and Fos expression in POM was increased after both types of tests. Thus, the neural circuit mediating ASB is present or can develop in both sexes, but is inactive in females unless they are exposed to exogenous T. In contrast, the neural mechanism mediating CSB is not normally present in females, but can be preserved by blocking the embryonic production of estrogens. Overall these data confirm the difference in endocrine controls and probably neural mechanisms supporting ASB and CSB in quail, and highlight the complexity of mechanisms underlying sexual differentiation of behavior.

Abstract
Sexual arousal has many dimensions and has consequently been defined in various ways. In humans, sexual arousal can be assessed based in part on verbal communication. In male non-human mammalian species, it has been argued that arousal can only be definitively inferred if the subject exhibits a penile erection in a sexual context. In non-mammalian species that lack an intromittent organ, as is the case for most avian species, the question of how to assess sexual arousal has not been thoroughly addressed. Based on studies performed in male Japanese quail, we argue that several behavioral or physiological characteristics provide suitable measures of sexual arousal in birds and probably also in other tetrapods. These indices include, the performance of appetitive sexual behavior in anticipation of copulation (although anticipation and arousal are not synonymous), the activation of specific brain area as identified by the detection of the expression of immediate early genes (fos, egr-1) or by 2-deoxyglucose quantitative autoradiography, and above all, by the release of dopamine in the medial preoptic area as measured by in vivo dialysis. Based on these criteria, it is possible to assess in birds sexual arousal in its broadest sense but meeting the more restrictive definition of arousal proposed for male mammals (erection in an explicit sexual context) is and will probably remain impossible in birds until refinement of in vivo imaging techniques such fMRI allow us to match in different species, with and without an intromittent organ, the brain areas that are activated in the presence of specific stimuli.

Abstract
On their first sexual encounter, naïve male Japanese quail will attend to and approach a female; they sometimes mount but they do not always copulate. During the second encounter, most males successfully copulate. Although sexual experience facilitates subsequent sexual interactions, sensory cues provided by females, independent of any sexual encounter, may also enhance sexual performance. To investigate whether previous exposure to a conspecific affects subsequent sexual behavior, we allowed inexperienced males to observe an empty box, or a conspecific consisting of either an experienced female or male for 2.5 min/day on 7 days. Measures of appetitive sexual behavior were recorded during these tests. On day 8, subjects were allowed to copulate with a novel female for 5 min. On the following days, all subjects were repeatedly provided with visual access to a female and allowed to mate. In the pre-copulatory trials males initially exhibited a high frequency of appetitive responses that dissipated with repetition. Pre-copulatory experience also significantly affected motivation to mate with subjects exposed to females copulating more quickly than other subjects. Post-copulatory appetitive behavior also differed between groups: control subjects showed the highest behavioral frequency followed by males exposed to females and finally males exposed to males. These data indicate that pre-copulatory social experience profoundly influences subsequent sexual behavior and probably reproductive success. This experience effect is independent of any hormonal effect (such as one resulting from changes in secretion following different social interactions) given that the subjects were castrates chronically treated with testosterone.

Abstract
Five variants of regeneration of the digestive system in holothurians are recognized on the basis of original and published data. They depend on presence of organs remains, ability of cells for de-differentiation, damage type, and ontogenetic stage. Regeneration occurs in all cases by means of differentiated cells, no stem cells participation was recorded in any species studied. It is suggested that the entire diversity of recovering reactions observed for the holothurians gut is not an evolutionary innovation in Holothuroidea but evolved on the basis of already existing mechanisms of regeneration and blastogenesis in the ancient echinodermats. Analysis of khown data indicates that holothurians possess two groups of recovering processes, one of which is close to embryonic development and another to blastogenesis by respective mechanisms. This may indicate probable polyphyletic origin of reparative regeneration in Echinodermata.

Abstract
The present study investigates the effects of temporal synergism of 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) and pineal function (pinealectomy and melatonin administration) on gonadal response and nitric oxide (NO) activity in Japanese quail. Three-week-old male quails were divided into 9 groups, as follows: (I) control (treated with normal saline); (II) 8-h and (III) 12-h (receiving L-DOPA after the administration of 5-HTP [5mg/100g body weight] at the interval of 8 and 12h, respectively, over a period of 13 days); (IV) SO (sham operated); (V) Px (pinealectomized); (VI) Veh (vehicle treated control); (VII) Mel (melatonin 25 microg/100g body weight for 45 days); (VIII) 12-h+Veh; and (IX) 12-h+Mel (same as in (III) but further treated with the vehicle or melatonin, respectively, for 32 days). Body weight and cloacal gland volume were recorded weekly, whereas spermatogenesis, plasma testosterone concentration, and total nitrite and nitrate concentration in plasma, hypothalamus, and testes were measured at the termination of the study. Results indicate that compared to the controls, 8-h, Mel, and 12-h+Mel treatments suppressed whereas 12-h and Px stimulated the reproductive system. Further, a significant increase in plasma testosterone, total nitrite, and nitrate in the 12-h and Px groups and a decrease in these concentrations in 8-h, Mel and 12-h+Mel quail were observed. It is evident that 5-HTP and L-DOPA given at the interval of 8h, as well as melatonin, are potent inhibitors of gonadal development, and the gonado stimulatory effect of the 12-h temporal relationship of the neurotransmitter precursors is masked by the inhibitory effect of melatonin. It is concluded that modulation of the daily phase relationship of neural oscillations and pineal function alters gonadal function and NO activity. Further, NO exhibits a parallel relationship with gonadal function in Japanese quail; this relationship appears to be mediated through NO activity, suggesting a causal relationship, although the mechanism between the 2 systems remains a topic of discussion.

Abstract
Broiler chicks that traverse a T-maze quickly to reinstate contact with their companions (HP, high performers) are known to grow faster, are more social, and have a reduced plasma corticosterone response to acute stress than slower chicks (LP, low performers). High-performing quail from a line selected for reduced rather than exaggerated (high-stress) adrenocortical stress responsiveness also show enhanced female reproductive performance when compared with LP-high-stress quail. Herein, time courses of male sexual development were evaluated in genetically unremarkable quail that were categorized at 2 d of age as HP or LP in the T-maze. Body weight, cloacal gland volume (CVOL), proportion of individuals that produced cloacal gland foam, intensity of foam production, and CVOL relative to BW (RCVOL) were determined weekly from 4 to 10 wk of age, and again at 22 wk, along with absolute and BW-adjusted testes weight. Although CVOL and RCVOL were initially similar in both T-maze groups, both variables were greater (P < 0.05) in HP than in LP quail between 6 and 10 wk of age. High-performing birds also showed a trend (P < 0.1) of greater cloacal gland foam than their LP counterparts from 5 to 7 wk. From 8 wk on, all birds were in foam production. Intensity of foam production results generally mimicked those found for CVOL and RCVOL. Body weights were higher (P < 0.05) in HP than LP quail from 5 to 7 wk. No T-maze group differences were found in any of the variables at 22 wk of age. The results suggest that rapid negotiation of the T-maze is associated with accelerated growth and puberty in male quail, although the enhanced reproductive development of HP males does not remain extant in aged adults.

Abstract
1. Two experiments were conducted to examine the effect of feeding higher supplemental vitamin E (VE) concentrations on male reproductive variables, fertility and hatchability of quails. 2. In experiment 1, sixty 5-week-old male quails, reared in individual cages, were fed male breeder diets supplemented with 0, 75, 150, 225 or 300 IU alpha-tocopherol acetate/kg. At 10 weeks, observations on cloacal gland size, foam production, testes weight and blood samples for testosterone estimation were taken. 3. In experiment 2, 50 male and 50 female cage-reared quails (5 weeks old) were fed male breeder and layer rations, respectively, supplemented with 0, 75, 150, 225 or 300 IU/kg. At 13 weeks, 9 different mating pairs (5 pairs/group) were formed. Group 1 contained one control male and one control female in each of 5 pens. In groups 2 to 5, control males were paired with females on supplements of 75, 150, 225 or 300 IU/kg. In groups 6 to 9, control females were paired with males on supplements of 75, 150, 225 and 300 IU/kg. During subsequent adaptation and egg collection periods, each of 10 d, control layer ration was fed to all groups. All the eggs laid during the 10-d egg collection period were incubated artificially to estimate fertility and hatchability. The trial was repeated at 15 weeks. 4. Adult male quails receiving moderate supplemental VE (75 and 150 IU/kg) had a higher cloacal gland index, quantity of foam secretion, testicular weight and plasma testosterone than quails fed on either VE-deficient or more highly supplemented diets (225 and 300 IU alpha-tocopherol acetate/kg). 5. It was concluded that a supplement of 75 IU VE/kg in maize/soybean diet could provide the best reproductive performance of male breeder quails. Cloacal gland index, quantity of foam secretion, testicular weight and plasma testosterone can serve as indirect indicators of testicular activity and fertilising ability in quails. Abstract
SUMMARY
We present the first experimental evidence that a bird is capable of evaporating enough water from the cloaca to be important for thermoregulation. We measured rates of evaporation occurring from the mouth, the skin, and the cloaca of Inca doves Columbina inca Lesson and Eurasian quail Coturnix coturnix Linnaeus. Inca doves showed no significant increase in cutaneous evaporation in response to curtailment of buccopharyngeal evaporation. Cloacal evaporation in doves was negligible at ambient temperatures of 30°, 35° and 40°C. However, at 42°C, the apportionment of total evaporation in doves was 53.4% cutaneous, 25.4%buccopharyngeal and 21.2% cloacal, with cloacal evaporation shedding, on average, 150 mW of heat. In contrast, the evaporative apportionment in quail at 32°C (the highest ambient temperature tolerated by this species) was 58.2% cutaneous, 35.4% buccopharyngeal and 6.4% cloacal. These results suggest that, for some birds, cloacal evaporation can be controlled and could serve as an important emergency tactic for thermoregulation at high ambient temperatures.

Abstract
In this study, heart and respiratory rates, cloacal temperature, and quality of sedation were evaluated before (0 min) and after (10, 20, and 30 min) i.m. administration of xylazine (10 mg/kg; n = 7), medetomidine (75 li; n = 6), detcmidine (0.3 mg/kg; n = 6), or diazepam (6 mg/kg; n = 7) in rock partridges (Alectoris graeca). All partridges recovered from sedation without any disturbance. Xylazine and diazepam administration did not induce significant changes in heart rate, which did decrease significantly after medetomidine and detomidine administration (P < 0.001). Mean respiratory rate was decreased dramatically at 20 and 30 min after xylazine (P < 0.001) and medetomidine (P < 0.005) administration, and at all stages of sedation after detomidine injection (P < 0.001), whereas there was not any significant change after diazepam injection. In all groups, cloacal temperature measured at 10, 20, and 30 min tended to decrease compared with baseline values. Sedative effects of the drugs started within 2.1+/-0.2 min for detomidine, 2.6 +/- 0.4 min for diazepam, 3.1 -+/-.4 min for xylazine, and 4.8+/-0.8 min for medetomidine application. There was an extreme variability in time to recovery for each drug: 205 +/-22.2 min for xylazine, 95 -12.2 min for medetomidine, 260+/-17.6 min for detomidine, and 149 + 8.3 min for diazepam. In conclusion, xylazine, medetomidine, detomidine, and diazepam produced sedation, which could permit some clinical procedures such as handling and radiographic examination of partridges to occur. Of the four drugs, xylazine produced stronger and more efficient sedation compared to the others, which could permit only minor procedures to be performed. However, depending on the drug used, monitoring of heart and respiratory rates and cloacal temperature might be required.

Abstract
In this study, we addressed why Caenorhabditis elegans males are inefficient at fertilizing their hermaphrodites. During copulation, hermaphrodites generally move away from males before they become impregnated. C. elegans hermaphrodites reproduce by internal self-fertilization, so that copulation with males is not required for species propagation. The hermaphroditic mode of reproduction could potentially relax selection for genes that optimize male mating behavior. We examined males from hermaphroditic and gonochoristic (male-female copulation) Caenorhabditis species to determine if they use different sensory and motor mechanisms to control their mating behavior. Instead, we found through laser ablation analysis and behavioral observations that hermaphroditic C. briggsae and gonochoristic C. remanei and Caenorhabditis species 4, PB2801 males produce a factor that immobilizes females during copulation. This factor also stimulates the vulval slit to widen, so that the male copulatory spicules can easily insert. C. elegans and C. briggsae hermaphrodites are not affected by this factor. We suggest that sensory and motor execution of mating behavior have not significantly changed among males of different Caenorhabditis species; however, during the evolution of internal self-fertilization, hermaphrodites have lost the ability to respond to the male soporific-inducing factor.

Abstract
An attempt has been made to investigate the relationship of cloacal gland with testes, testosterone and fertility in different lines of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). For this study, three lines of healthy adult male Japanese quails (<12 weeks) viz., heavy body weight (HB), white breasted (WB), and white egg shell (WES) were taken. They were housed in individual cages under uniform husbandry conditions and were provided with normal quail breeder ration and water ad libitum, with 14 h light/day. The experimental birds were selected from each of these three lines and categorized into different groups (15 birds/group) based on the increasing order of the area of cloacal gland. At the end of this experiment (24 weeks) the data indicated that size of the cloacal gland was directly proportional to foam discharge, foam weight, testicular weight, fertility and testosterone concentration in plasma. From this study it may be concluded that area of cloacal gland in Japanese quail is positively correlated with testicular weight, level of testosterone in plasma and fertility. Visual examination of cloacal gland and cloacal foam may provide a valuable non-invasive tool for predicting the fertilizing ability of individual male bird.

Abstract
This experiment was to investigate the effects of increasing the level of dietary Vitamin E (Vit. E) on cloacal gland size, foam production and semen characteristics of male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix Japonica). One hundred and eighty male Japanese quail chicks (day old) were randomly distributed to three dietary treatments for a period of 25 weeks. Each treatment comprised of three replicates each containing 20 chicks. The basal diet contained 15 IU Vit. E/kg and the two experimental diets were supplemented with 150 and 300 IU Vit. E/kg (diets T2 and T3, respectively). DL alpha-tocopherol acetate was used as the source of Vit. E. All chicks were provided feed and water ad libitum. Foam characteristics, in terms of frequency of foam discharge (24h), cloacal gland index and foam weight were significantly higher (P<0.05) in T2 group. Body weight, testes weight (left and right) and plasma testosterone concentrations did not differ significantly. Semen characteristics (semen volume, sperm motility, % live sperm, % hatchability and sperm concentrations) did not differ significantly (P>0.05). Percentages of abnormal and dead spermatozoa were significantly (P<0.05) lower and fertility was higher (P<0.05) in the T2 group. From this study, it can be concluded that moderate supplementation of dietary Vit. E may be beneficial for foam production, cloacal gland and improve the semen characteristics in male Japanese quail.

Abstract
Corticosterone is linked to testicular depression, and in Coturnix, a relatively photorefractory species, day length and androgen dependency in cloacal gland development and foam production are evident. Furthermore, male quail selected for reduced (low stress, LS) rather than exaggerated (high stress, HS) plasma corticosterone stress response show more photo-induced reproductive development, greater resistance to reproductive declines induced by exposure to very short days, and a quicker recovery to a higher reproductive level upon return to long days. To determine whether a milder reduction in day length would also influence stress line reproductive photoresponsiveness, and perhaps photorefractoriness, males grown on 16 h of light were given 13 h of light for 4 wk followed by a return to long days for 12 wk. Cloacal gland measurements were made following the initial stimulatory photoperiod and weekly thereafter during the 2 light treatments. Plasma testosterone was determined initially, after 4 wk of light reduction, and at the end of the study, along with BW, testes weight (TWT), and TWT relative to BW. Cloacal gland volume (CVOL) was greater in LS than HS males grown on long days. Whereas exposure to 13 h of light reduced CVOL in both lines, line differences (LS > HS) persisted during the first 3 wk of light reduction. Moreover, by 2 wk of rephotostimulation, and weekly thereafter, line differences (LS > HS) in CVOL reemerged. Cloacal gland foam production and the proportion of individuals that produced cloacal gland foam responses reflected changes in CVOL. The BW did not differ by line, yet LS males had a higher TWT and TWT relative to BW than HS ones. All individuals, however, exhibited relative photorefractory responses. Whereas none of the LS males completely resisted reproductive regression induced by a 3 h light reduction, LS males showed other reproductive benefits upon mild photocastration and subsequent rephotostimulation (e.g., greater resistance to CVOL and cloacal gland foam production losses during a mild light crash and quicker restoration to full reproductive potential upon relighting).

Abstract
We investigated the neural sites related to the occurrence of appetitive (ASB) and consummatory (CSB) aspects of male sexual behaviour in Japanese quail. Castrated males treated with testosterone were exposed for 5 min to one of four experimental conditions: (i) free interaction with a female (CSB group); (ii) expression of rhythmic cloacal sphincter movements in response to the visual presentation of a female (ASB-F group); (iii) or a male (ASB-M group), and (iv) handling as a control manipulation. Brains were collected 90 min after the start of behavioural tests and stained by immunocytochemistry for the FOS protein. An increase in FOS expression was observed throughout the rostro-caudal extent of the medial preoptic nucleus (POM) in CSB males, whereas the view of a female (ASB-F) induced an increased FOS expression in the rostral POM only. In the CSB group, there was also an increase in FOS expression in the bed nucleus striae terminalis, and both the CSB and ASB-F groups exhibited increased FOS expression in aspects of the ventro-lateral thalamus (VLT) related to visual processing. Moreover, both the CSB and ASB-M groups showed increased FOS expression in the lateral septum. These data provide additional support to the idea that there is a partial anatomical dissociation between structures involved in the control of both aspects of male sexual behaviour and independently provide data consistent with a previous lesion study that indicated that the rostral and caudal POM differentially control the expression of ASB and CSB in quail.

Abstract
Japanese quail are an important model for the discovery of neuroendocrine mechanisms of sexual behavior. In common with most birds and many other vertebrates, there are no genitalia of the mammalian kind (no phallus or vagina). Instead, close contact between the cloacal openings of the male and female is critical for successful mating. Prior research has shown that males produce distinctive rhythmic movements of the foam gland portion of the cloacal sphincter muscle (RCSMs) in response to social stimuli (presentation of a conspecific female or male). These RCSMs enhance the male's fertilization success. Females, unlike males, do not show cloacal sphincter movements to social stimuli (Experiment 1) and female cloacal sphincter muscle activity immediately following copulation does not predict fertilization success (Experiment 2). Females implanted with testosterone propionate (TP), however, show large numbers of male-typical RCSMs in response to social stimuli (Experiment 3). The results of Experiment 3 show that rhythmic movements of the cloacal sphincter muscle shown by TP-treated females are regulated by distal (visual) stimuli and therefore by the brain. They also show that the absence of socially modulated RCSMs in normal females is an activational hormone phenomenon (a sex difference produced by adult hormonal dimorphism), rather than a reflection of prior hormonal organization. These results add to an understanding of the hormonal basis of sex differences in motor mechanisms of sexual behavior in non-mammalian species.

Abstract
Non-genomic effects of steroid hormones on cell physiology have been reported in the brain. However, relatively little is known about the behavioral significance of these actions. Male sexual behavior is activated by testosterone partly through its conversion to estradiol via the enzyme aromatase in the preoptic area (POA). Brain aromatase activity (AA) changes rapidly which might in turn be important for the rapid regulation of behavior. Here, acute effects of Vorozole, an aromatase inhibitor, injected IP at different doses and times before testing (between 15 and 60 min), were assessed on male sexual behavior in quail. To limit the risk of committing both types of statistical errors (I and II), data of all experiments were entered into a meta-analysis. Vorozole significantly inhibited mount attempts (P < 0.05, size effect [g] = 0.527) and increased the latency to first copulation (P < 0.05, g = 0.251). The treatment had no effect on the other measures of copulatory behavior. Vorozole also inhibited appetitive sexual behavior measured by the social proximity response (P < 0.05, g = 0.534) or rhythmic cloacal sphincter movements (P < 0.001, g = 0.408). Behavioral inhibitions always reached a maximum at 30 min. Another aromatase inhibitor, androstatrienedione, induced a similar rapid inhibition of sphincter movements. Radioenzyme assays demonstrated that within 30 min Vorozole had reached the POA and completely blocked AA measured in homogenates. When added to the extracellular milieu, Vorozole also blocked within 5 min the AA in POA explants maintained in vitro. Together, these data demonstrate that aromatase inhibition rapidly decreases both consummatory and appetitive aspects of male sexual behavior.

Abstract
Changes in heart rate (f(H)) and cloacal ventilation frequency (f(C)) were investigated in the Fitzroy turtle, Rheodytes leukops, under normoxic (17.85 kPa) and hypoxic (3.79 kPa) conditions at 25 degrees C. Given R. leukops' high reliance on aquatic respiration via the cloacal bursae, the objective of this study was to examine the effect of varying aquatic PO(2) levels upon the expression of a bradycardia in a freely diving, bimodally respiring turtle. In normoxia, mean diving f(H) and f(C) for R. leukops remained constant with increasing submergence length, indicating that a bradycardia failed to develop during extended dives of up to 3 days. Alternatively, exposure to aquatic hypoxia resulted in the expression of a bradycardia as recorded by a decreasing mean diving f(H) with increasing dive duration. The observed bradycardia is attributed to a hypoxic-induced metabolic depression, possibly facilitated by a concurrent decrease in f(C). Results suggest that R. leukops alters its strategy from aquatic O(2) extraction via cloacal respiration in normoxia to O(2) conservation when exposed to aquatic hypoxia for the purpose of extending dive duration. Upon surfacing, a significant tachycardia was observed for R. leukops regardless of aquatic PO(2), presumably functioning to rapidly equilibrate blood and tissue gas tensions with alveolar gas to reduce surfacing duration.

Abstract
Demonstrations of increased reproductive success due to sexual conditioning in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) have been reported, although the mechanisms that underlie these effects have remained elusive. One possible mechanism is conditioned rhythmic cloacal sphincter movements (RCSM). Two experiments were conducted with male quail to determine whether associations between a conditioned stimulus (CS) and a hen would result in the ability of the CS to elicit RCSM, and to explore the androgen mediation of conditioned RCSM. The results suggest that a focal CS paired with visual access to a female will elicit RCSM via a representation of the hen activated by the CS. Further, the available evidence indicates that conditioned RCSM is androgen mediated and that this learning may transfer across breeding seasons.

Abstract
Circulating concentrations of thyroxine (T(4)) vary seasonally in many vertebrates. This study examined the seasonal variation in plasma concentrations of T(4) in juvenile American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) from three populations in central Florida, USA. One site, Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, is considered a reference site whereas the other two lakes, Lake Apopka and Orange Lake, are significantly impacted by human activity. Juvenile American alligators ranging from 75-150 cm in total length were hand-captured at night from November 2000-April 2002. Plasma thyroxine concentrations were analyzed using a radioimmunoassay (RIA) previously validated for alligator plasma. Juvenile American alligators display seasonal variation in circulating T(4) concentrations. Plasma T(4) concentrations decrease from August/September to November and then begin a slow rise until April, at which point they plateau. Sex of juveniles influenced plasma concentrations of T(4) in some months but did not appear to alter the pattern in seasonal variation. The pattern we observed in plasma T(4) concentrations is not directly related to an environmental factor such as ambient temperature but is similar to that seen in plasma sex steroid concentrations during the reproductive cycle of adult alligators. Although the pattern and plasma concentration of T(4) exhibits significant variation among the three lakes studied, the pattern in seasonal variation appears similar. Comparing the seasonal pattern in plasma T(4) with plasma concentrations of sex steroids (testosterone and estradiol-17beta) or corticosterone could provide important information on the peripubescent life stage of the American alligator.

Abstract
In Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), activation of appetitive and consummatory aspects of male sexual behavior requires aromatization of testosterone (T) into estrogens. Appetitive male sexual behavior (ASB) is usually assessed with the use of a learned social proximity procedure. In the present experiment, we investigated the role of estrogens in the activation of an another index of ASB, the female-induced activation of rhythmic cloacal sphincter movements (RCSMs) that are produced in reaction to the visual presentation of a female. Consummatory sexual behavior (CSB) was also assessed by the frequency and latency of copulatory behaviors. Castrated male quail were treated with Silastic implants filled with T in association with chronic injections of the aromatase inhibitor Vorozole (R83842; 1mg/kg twice a day; CX + T + VOR group). Control birds were implanted with T capsules only (CX + T group). CSB was almost completely blocked by injections of the aromatase inhibitor. The RCSM frequency decreased progressively in the CX + T + VOR group by comparison with the CX + T group and was therefore significantly reduced at the end of the experiment. These results demonstrate that the frequency of RCSM, a second measure of ASB is, like the social proximity response and CSB, blocked by inhibition of estrogen production. It was shown previously that lesions of the preoptic area inhibit both aspects of the appetitive sexual behavior (proximity response and RCSM). It is therefore, likely that both responses are controlled, like copulation, by aromatase-containing neurons of the preoptic area.

Abstract
To understand normal cloacal developmental processes, serial sagittal sections of mouse embryos were made every 6 hrs from embryonic day 11.5 (E11.5) to E13.5. During cloacal development to form the urogenital sinus and anorectal canal, fusion of the urorectal septum with the cloacal membrane was not observed, and the ventral and dorsal parts of the cloaca were continuously connected by the canal until disappearance of the cloacal membrane to open the vestibule formed by the urogenital sinus and anorectal canal to the outside at E13.5. Ventral shifting of the dorsal part of the cloaca was observed until E12.5. The dorsal part was transformed in accordance with ventral shifting. In addition, apoptosis was seen to occur around the dorsal part. However, from E12.25, apoptotic cells are observed in a linear arrangement in the urorectal septum just ventral to the peritoneal cavity. Interestingly, extension of this line reaches the area of the cloacal membrane disintegrated by apoptosis. The present findings suggest that in the early stages (until E12.0), distribution of apoptosis in mesenchyme around the dorsal part of the cloaca might be strongly related to the transformation and ventral shifting of this part. Conversely, the apoptosis pattern in urorectal septum mesenchyme in later stages (from E12.0) might be involved in transformation of the urorectal septum and disintegration of the cloacal membrane.

Abstract
In quail, activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis has been linked to depression in the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, and cloacal gland development and foam production are known to be androgen dependent. Therefore, photoperiod manipulations that induce gonadal growth (long day) and involution (short day) were used to examine changes in cloacal gland physiology in male quail from lines selected for a reduced (low stress, LS) or exaggerated (high stress, HS) plasma corticosterone response to brief restraint. Line differences in cloacal gland area (CAREA) and volume (CVOL), the proportion of individuals that produced cloacal gland foam (PICF), and the intensity of cloacal gland foam production (CFP) were initially assessed in adult males maintained on stimulatory, long photoperiods of 14L:10D. Thereafter, these variables were re-examined weekly in the same males during their subsequent exposure to 3 wk of short days (6L:18D) followed by return to long d for 3 more wk. Line differences in testes weight relative to body weight (RTW) were also measured at the end of the study. CAREA and CVOL were markedly greater in LS than HS males grown under long days. As expected, these indices of cloacal gland size were greatly reduced upon exposure to short days in both lines. However, line differences (LS > HS) in CAREA and CVOL were maintained during the first 2 wk of exposure to short days. Line differences in the depressed cloacal gland size measures were no longer evident by the third week on short days as well as after the first week of relighting wherein there were no further depressions in gland size of either line. However, by the end of 2 wk of rephotostimulation and thereafter, marked line differences (LS > HS) in CAREA and CVOL re-emerged. Photoperiod-induced line effects on CFP generally mimicked those of CAREA and CVOL. The PICF was marginally different (P < 0.07) between the lines (LS > HS) only after 1 wk of light reduction. After 3 wk of rephotostimulation, RTW was nearly 25% greater in LS quail. The results suggest that selection for reduced adrenocortical responsiveness in Coturnix has resulted in certain reproductive advantages in middle-aged, adult males maintained on stimulatory photoperiods as well as in such adults subjected to photocastration and subsequent rephotostimulation.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The Gila monster Heloderma suspectum is an active forager in an environment that, at times, can be extremely hot and arid. Thus, Gila monsters face extreme thermostatic and hydrostatic demands. For a desert ectotherm routinely risking dehydration, evaporative water loss (EWL) is typically viewed as detrimental. Yet evaporation simultaneously dehydrates and cools an animal. We explored EWL in Gila monsters by measuring cutaneous, ventilatory and cloacal EWL at five ambient temperatures between 20.5°C and 40°C. Our results show that Gila monsters have high EWL rates relative to body mass. Cutaneous EWL underwent a consistent, temperature-dependent increase over the entire range of test temperatures (Q10=1.61, with EWL ranging from 0.378 to 0.954 mg g–1 h–1). Ventilatory EWL did not show a significant temperature-dependent response, but ranged from 0.304 to 0.663 mg g–1 h–1. Cloacal EWL was extremely low and relatively constant between 20.5°C and 35°C, but rose dramatically above 35°C (Q10 >8.3×107,from 0.0008 at 35°C to 7.30 mg g–1 h–1at 40°C). This steep rise in cloacal EWL coincided with an increasing suppression of body temperature relative to ambient temperature. Dehydration to 80% of initial body mass led to a delay in the onset and an attenuation of the dramatic increase in cloacal EWL. These results emphasize the potential value of EWL for thermoregulation in ectotherms and demonstrate for the first time the role of the cloaca in this process.

Abstract
The AA. studied the autonomic and sensitive somatic innervation of some female bird's proctodeum, through the properly modified Ruffini's gold chloride method. The vegetative component was constituted by ganglion cells of different size, isolated or grouped to form ganglia, found along the course of nerve trunks or in the concurrent point of different nerve bundles. The sensitive somatic innervation was represented by free and encapsulated endings differently distributed in the thickness of the wall. The former were composed of thin networks, while the latter, located more frequently in the muscular tunica and in the subadventitial connective, were composed of encapsulated receptors classified as Pacini, Pacini-like and Herbst corpuscles. The morphology of these receptors was described and hypotheses were brought up about their probable functional role. The AA, also found, even if very rarely, helicoidal collagen fibres around nerve fascicles.

Abstract
An embryological explanation for the development of the Müllerian duct still poses a major challenge. The development of this duct was investigated systematically in human embryos. Seven embryos (Carnegie stages 18-23) were serially sectioned in the frontal, sagittal, and transversal planes at a thickness of 10 microm and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) for histological analysis. In all observed embryos, the caudal end of the Müllerian duct was found to be intimately connected to the Wolffian duct. The opening of the Müllerian duct to the coelomic cavity was formed as the result of an invagination of the coelomic epithelium at Carnegie stage 18. The duct grew independently from the invagination during stages 19-23. The fused duct (uterovaginal canal) bifurcated at the caudal portion at Carnegie stages 22 and 23. This is the first description of the caudal portion of the fused Müllerian ducts separating again and returning to each of the Wolffian ducts in human embryos.

Abstract
The chemical composition of secretions of precloacal pores from two populations of the lizard Liolaemus fabiani (Puilar and Punta-Brava) were compared. This is an endemic species from the Atacama Salt Flat (26 degrees 46'S 68 degrees 14'W; 2400 m) in northern Chile, restricted to the internal lakes of the salt flat. Interpopulational differences in the chemical composition of the secretions were expected considering that populations have genetic differences and are subject to different thermal conditions. By using GC-MS, a total of 44 compounds were found belonging to three categories: n-alkanes, long-chain carboxylic acids, and steroids. Six compounds were found in all the individuals studied: tetradecanoic, pentadecanoic, hexadecanoic, hexadecenoic, octadecanoic, and octadecenoic acids. The secretions of both populations had similar types and proportions of the different compounds, except for cholesterol and hexanoic acid, which were more abundant in the Puilar population. These differences can be ascribed to the different environmental conditions to which populations are subjected. The adaptive meaning of these differences is discussed.

Abstract
In the female red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis), the loss of receptivity following intromission during mating can be prevented by injection of a local anesthetic (tetracaine) in the cloacal region prior to courtship and mating. Females that were courted and then mated had significantly higher uptake of radio-labeled [14C]2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (2-DG) in the preoptic area (25%) and significantly lower uptake in the ventromedial hypothalamus (-20%) compared with females that were courted but not mated. Tetracaine-treated females had accumulation patterns similar to courted but unmated females and to females exposed only to other females. These results suggest that in the female red-sided garter snake, sensory input from the cloaca during mating alters patterns of metabolism in those brain areas most often associated with female sexual behavior.

Abstract
Courtship clasping, a reproductive behavior in male roughskin newts (Taricha granulosa), is rapidly blocked by an action of corticosterone (CORT) at a specific neuronal membrane receptor. The CORT-induced impairment of clasping in behaving newts appears to be mediated partly by an elimination of clasping-related activity in medullary reticulospinal neurons. Previous studies of rapid CORT actions in Taricha have focused on the brain, so existence of CORT action in the spinal cord or peripheral nervous system has not been assessed. The present study used newts with a high cervical spinal transection to examine potential spinal or peripheral CORT effects on clasping by the hindlimbs in response to pressure on the cloaca. Spinal transection causes clasps elicited by cloacal stimulation to be very sustained beyond the termination of the eliciting stimulus. In spinally transected newts, CORT caused a dose-dependent depression in the duration as well as quality of the clasp that appeared within 10 min of injection. CORT selectively impaired the usual sustained maintenance of a clasp after termination of cloacal stimulation, but not clasp elicitation during stimulation. These effects were not produced by dexamethasone, a synthetic glucocorticoid that binds poorly to the CORT membrane receptor. The CORT effect on clasp maintenance but not clasp elicitation implies selective action on an intraspinal generator for clasping but not on sensory or efferent neuromuscular aspects of the response. These results indicate the presence in the newt spinal cord of the CORT membrane receptor that exerts functional effects distinctly different from those on the brainstem.

Abstract
The aim of study is to investigate the development of the anal canal in human embryos and foetuses. In embryos at stage 19 the boundary between the ectodermal and endodermal linings of the anal canal is located just below the level of the internal anal sphincter muscle. Histological sections showed that the first signs of anal columns are observed in embryos at stage 21 (51 days).

Abstract
The epithelium of the distal part of Rana temporaria intestine has been studied by light and electron microscopy. It has been shown that the number of agrent-affined endocrinocytes in the mucosa of the frog intestinal epithelium decreases gradually from the small bowel to the colon, and then sharply increased in the distal part of colon (cloaca). Four types of endocrinocytes have been identified: EC, D, L and type IV. In frogs examined in March, endocrinocytes of the colon mucosal epithelium demonstrate structural features characteristic of the state of functional strain. These features are most pronounced in EC-cells. This seems to be due to the state of awakening from hibernation, serotonin (produced by EC-cells) playing an essential role in this process.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sedative-anaesthetic effects of a combination of medetomidine (M, 50 microg per pigeon), butorphanol (B, 50 microg per pigeon) and ketamine (K, 25 mg per pigeon) in domestic pigeons. Eight domestic pigeons (four male and four female, 8-15 months old) were used. The combination of Medetomidine and butorphanol injectable solutions were used to produce sedation. Ten minutes after M + B administration, K was injected. The anaesthetic effects of the drugs were reversed by administration of Atipamazole (AT) at 60 min after K administration. All drugs were injected into the pectoral muscles. The sedative-anaesthetic effects of the M + B-K combination and, alterations in respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), electrocardiographic (ECG) findings and cloacal temperature (CT) were investigated before and 10 min after pre-medication with M + B, at 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min during the onset of K anaesthesia and at 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 60 min following the administration of AT. The HR and RR of pigeons decreased within 10 min following M + B administration and remained lower until 1st and 5 min of AT injection, respectively. In ECG, no significant alterations in P, Q, R and S-values were observed, however, arhythmia was recorded for three pigeons, which returned to normal values following AT administration throughout the measurement. Cloacal temperature decreased gradually during the anaesthesia from 41.0 to 32.7 degrees C. The drug combination used in this study produced a satisfactory general anaesthesia for seven of the eight pigeons. All pigeons were unconscious within 5 min after K administration as indicated by disappearance of the palpebral and corneal reflexes and lack of reaction to the pain stimuli during the study. The effect of AT administration was observed within 10 min as all pigeons responded partly against stimuli and all reflexes. It is concluded that M + B-K anaesthesia in pigeons is a safe and reliable anaesthetic protocol for surgery.

Abstract
Healthy heavy body weight strain of adult male Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix Japonica) of the same age were used in this study to observe the effect of hemicastration and castration on the frequency of foam discharges from cloacal gland and other related parameters. The quails were housed in individual cages and divided into four groups: control (intact birds), sham-operated control (intact birds with incision), hemicastrated, and castrated groups of birds. Hemicastration and castration were carried out surgically at 10 and 13 weeks of age, respectively. Subsequently, 3 weeks after castration birds were examined for different parameters. Hemicastration caused a significant (P < 0.05) drop in the foam discharge frequency, weight of the foam, and the level of testosterone in the plasma, whereas in castrated group these variables were observed nil or negligible as compared to both of the controls. A suppressive effect of hemicastration was also noticed on the body weight, area of the cloacal gland, as well as percent fertility. Castration induced the drastic regression of the cloacal gland and a significant reduction (P < 0.05) of the body weight was also noted as compared to other groups. Frequencies of foam discharges were twice the number in daytime (06:00-18:00 h) than night, irrespective of the groups. In another study, the effect of characteristics of foam or foam glands on fertility was examined in 77 male birds paired with females. Several characteristics of foam and foam glands were examined for infertility, such as light yellow foam, dark yellow foam, smaller area of foam gland (below 225 mm2), hardness of foam gland and certain unknown factors that contributed 0.23, 0.68, 5.23, 2.27 and 3.64% infertility, respectively. An overall 12.1% birds were found to be infertile. This data indicated that smaller sizes of foam glands might reflect the poorest fertilizing ability of the male birds. From this study, it may be concluded that the cloacal gland may be considered as an external indicator of testicular function of the birds. Characteristics of the cloacal gland or foam or both may be used as a simple and effective tool to predict the fertilizing ability of an individual male in view of the very small semen ejaculate that is very difficult to collect and evaluate for fertility.

Abstract
Differences in the onset of puberty were assessed in male Japanese quail from a random-bred (RB, control) line and two lines that had been genetically selected for reduced (low stress, LS) or exaggerated (high stress, HS) plasma corticosterone response to brief mechanical restraint. At 42 d of age, cloacal gland area (CAREA) and volume (CVOL), proportion of individuals that produced cloacal gland foam (PICF), and intensity of cloacal gland foam production (CFP) were examined in 60 representatives from each of these quail lines. CFP was quantified by subjective scaling of the amount of foam ejected upon manual expression (squeezing) of the foam gland, using a scale of 1 (no foam expressed) to 5 (maximum amount of foam expression). Mean CAREA and CVOL were similar in quail of the RB and HS lines, but these measures were greater (P < 0.01) in the LS quail. In addition, more (P < 0.05) LS than HS birds expressed foam at 42 d, whereas RB quail exhibited an intermediate PICF response that was not different from either selected line. CFP results mimicked those found for PICF (i.e., LS quail produced a greater (P < 0.05) amount of foam than HS birds, whereas RB quail showed intermediate production that was not different from LS or HS levels). In prepubertal and pubertal Japanese quail, cloacal gland hypertrophy is androgen-dependent and highly positively correlated with testes size as well as sexual activity. Cloacal gland foam production is also considered a reliable indicator of testicular size and activity. Thus, we conclude that selection for reduced adrenocortical responsiveness in Coturnix is associated with acceleration in the onset of puberty in males. The potential interaction between adrenocortical and testicular activity as it relates to male reproductive performance is discussed.

Abstract
Many aquatic turtles possess paired evaginations of the cloaca called cloacal bursae. Despite more than two centuries of study, little consensus exists as to the function(s) of these organs. We tested a recent suggestion that bursae could function in water uptake ("cloacal drinking"). Turtles (Trachemys scripta) were dehydrated (68-86% of maximum body mass) and given the opportunity to drink orally or cloacally. Dehydration caused increases in hematocrit and osmolality of extracellular fluid (ECF), but only after loss of 10-12% of maximum body mass, suggesting that turtles osmoregulated by reabsorbing water from the urinary bladder. Turtles drank eagerly when they could submerge their heads, and drinking was accompanied by an increase in body mass and a decrease in ECF osmolality. However, dehydrated turtles with tail and anus submerged showed no changes in mass or osmolality, suggesting that water absorption is not a significant function of the cloacal bursae in this species. Evidence for other putative functions is reviewed, leading to a pluralistic view: in cryptodires, bursae apparently function primarily in buoyancy control and secondarily in ion transport and nesting, but several pleurodires have been shown recently to use them in aquatic respiration.

Abstract
In seasonally breeding male oscines, song learning and expression are controlled by brain regions (vocal control regions, VCRs) that exhibit seasonal neural plasticity in adulthood. Several VCRs contain androgen receptors, and gonadal androgens play important roles in the control of seasonal structural and functional changes of VCRs. Recent studies also found that adult VCRs are influenced by factors other than gonadal hormones, including photoperiod, but the relative importance of these factors and their mechanisms of action are poorly understood. To address this issue, we investigated the contributions of photoperiod and testicular androgens to the regulation of VCR volumes and to the control of song expression in adult dark-eyed juncos, Junco hyemalis. Exposing castrated (CX) photosensitive males to long days (LD) enhanced their high vocal center (HVc) volumes compared to those of males held on short days (SD). These volumes were not further increased by concurrent testosterone (T) treatment, revealing a marked and gonadal androgen-independent stimulatory influence of photoperiod on the size of this brain region. HVc sizes were smaller in LD-exposed photorefractory than photosensitive males irrespective of whether birds were intact or had been castrated before photoperiodic manipulations, but HVc sizes increased in response to T treatment in intact photorefractory males. Thus, LD exposure can increase HVc volumes in the absence of gonadal T, but large volume induction in photorefractory males requires elevated plasma T levels. Testosterone treatment of SD-exposed photosensitive males increased HVc, but not Area X, MAN, or RA volumes. Only T-treated males sang and this treatment given to castrates was equally effective behaviorally when administered to photosensitive, photostimulated, or photorefractory juncos. This result indicates that the stimulating influence of LD exposure on HVc volumes is insufficient to induce song in the absence of elevated plasma T levels.

Abstract
Nucleus taeniae (Tn) is a prominent cell group within the medial archistriatum of birds. Based upon similarities in sex-steroid binding sites, this nucleus has been hypothesized to be homologous to the medial nucleus of the amygdala (Me) in mammals, which is known to modulate the expression of sexual behavior in rodents. We therefore tested whether or not Tn likewise plays a role in the expression of sexual behavior in male Japanese quail. We found that bilateral damage to Tn produced deficits in several components of male responses toward female stimuli that were indicative of decreased sexual arousal, including goal-oriented responses, vocalizations associated with courtship, and motor reflexes that precede copulation. Our results suggest that Tn influences a wide range of behavioral functions in response to sexual stimuli, and they indicate a function for this nucleus similar to that subserved by the Me in mammals. These results strengthen the argument that these sex-steroid accumulating cell groups are homologous and suggest a conservation of function for them despite the vastly divergent evolutionary histories separating birds and mammals.

Abstract
The cloacal complex of Crocodylus porosus is composed of three chambers (proctodaeum, urodaeum, and coprodaeum) separated by tight, muscular sphincters. The proctodaeum is proximal to the cloacal vent and houses the genitalia. The urodaeum is the largest chamber, is capable of storing large quantities of urine, and is lined with an epithelium with the capacity for transepithelial water and ion exchange. The coprodaeum, the most orad cloacal chamber, is a small, only marginally expandable chamber that has an epithelium composed almost entirely of mucus-secreting cells. The coprodaeum and lower intestine are reported to be the site(s) for urine modification in birds and bladderless lizards. A radiographic trace of urine storage in C. porosus kept for 2 months under hyperosmotic conditions showed no signs of retrograde movement of urine into the coprodaeum or rectum. Instead, urine was stored in the urodaeum of C. porosus. Examination of the mucosal surface of the urodaeum by SEM showed a plastic response to environmental salinity, with a possible increase in surface area in animals kept in hyperosmotic water compared with animals from fresh water. We propose the urodaeum as the primary site for postrenal modification of urine in C. porosus.

Abstract
The abdominal gland in the male red-bellied newt, Cynops pyrrhogaster, is the source of a female-attracting pheromone. An attempt was made to isolate and characterize the female-attracting pheromone in the abdominal glands of male newts. The active substance, named sodefrin (from the Japanese 'sodefuri' which means 'soliciting') has been isolated and shown to be a novel decapeptide with the sequence, Ser-Ile-Pro-Ser-Lys-Asp-Ala-Leu-Leu-Lys. Its minimum effective concentration in water is 0.1-1.0 pmol 1-1. Synthetic sodefrin shows a female-attracting activity similar to that of the native peptide, and acts through the olfactory organ of female newts. Electrophysiological studies reveal that sodefrin evokes a marked electroolfactogram response in the vomeronasal epithelium in sexually mature females and in ovariectomized females treated with prolactin and oestrogen. The pheromonal activity of sodefrin appears to be species-specific since it does not attract females of a congeneric species, the sword-tailed newt C. ensicauda. However, C. ensicauda has a variant of sodefrin differing from that in C. pyrrhogaster by substitutions of Leu for Pro at position 3 and Gln for Leu at position 8. The C. ensicauda variant sodefrin does not attract C. pyrrhogaster females. Genes encoding the sodefrin precursor protein have been cloned in both C. pyrrhogaster and C. ensicauda. Immunostaining of the abdominal gland using the antiserum against sodefrin shows that sodefrin occurs in the epithelial cells, predominantly within the secretory granules. Sodefrin content, detected by immunoassay, in C. pyrrhogaster males decreases after castration and hypophysectomy and increases markedly in the castrated and hypophysectomized newts after treatment with androgen and prolactin. This combination of hormones also enhances sodefrin mRNA content in the abdominal gland as assessed by northern blot analysis using sodefrin cDNA.

Abstract
Endogenously secreted or injected corticosterone (CORT) rapidly suppresses courtship clasping in male roughskin newts (Taricha granulosa) by an action on a specific neuronal membrane receptor. Previous studies, using immobilized newts, showed that CORT administration rapidly depresses excitability of reticulospinal neurons and attenuates medullary neuronal responsiveness to clasp-triggering sensory stimuli. The present study used freely moving newts to examine clasping responses and concurrently record sensorimotor properties of 67 antidromically identified reticulospinal and other medullary reticular neurons before and after CORT injection. Before CORT, reticulospinal neurons fired in close association with onset and offset of clasps elicited by cloacal pressure. Reticulospinal neurons also showed firing correlates of nonclasping motor events, especially locomotion. Neuronal activity was typically reduced during clasping and elevated during locomotion. Medullary neurons that were not antidromically invaded (unidentified neurons) usually showed sensorimotor properties that resembled those of reticulospinal neurons. Intraperitoneal CORT (but not vehicle) reduced the probability and quality of hindlimb clasping in response to cloacal pressure, especially within 5-25 min of injection. Simultaneously, responses of reticulospinal and unidentified neurons to cloacal pressure and occurrence of clasping-related activity were attenuated or eliminated. CORT effects were relatively selective, altering clasping-related neuronal activity more strongly than activity associated with nonclasping motor events. The properties of CORT effects indicate that the hormone impairs clasping by depressing processing of clasp-triggering afferent activity and by disrupting the medullary control of clasping normally mediated by reticulospinal neurons. The rapid onset of these CORT effects implicates a neuronal membrane receptor rather than genomic action of the steroid.

Abstract
Females in seven of the ten families of salamanders possess cloacal glands called spermathecae that store sperm. The annual cycle of sperm storage has been studied by light and electron microscopy in eight species representing five families. In these taxa, we recognized 14 characters associated with the spermathecae and traced their evolution on a phylogeny of salamanders based upon other characters. The plasticity and phyletic significance of the spermathecal characters varied greatly. Plethodontids have complex spermathecae while other families possess simple spermathecae; thus, this character has phyletic value as well as being highly conserved within the Salamandroidea. Other characters, such as carbohydrate histochemistry, are highly plastic and show no obvious phyletic trends. The significance of some of these variable characters, such as duration of sperm storage, is apparent only after including in the analysis other aspects of the reproductive cycle, such as length of the mating season. Additional comparative studies, employing the protocol used in this paper, will help further clarify the relationships between phyletic and functional variability in sperm storage mechanisms in salamanders.

Abstract
The Parisian comparative anatomist Claude Perrault, dissecting an Indian giant tortoise in 1676, was the first to observe that the urinary bladder is of an extraordinary size in terrestrial tortoises. In 1799, the English comparative physiologist Robert Townson suggested that the bladder functioned as a water reservoir, as he had shown previously for frogs and toads. However, these observations went unnoticed in subsequent reports on tortoise water economy that were made by travellers and naturalists visiting the Galapagos Archipelago and marvelling over the huge numbers of giant tortoises that inhabited these desert-like islands. The first such report was by an American naval officer, David Porter, who was a privateer in the 1812-15 war with England. In his journal he referred to the constant supply of water which the Galapagos tortoises carried with them. References to the location in the body, as well as the amounts and quality of the water stored, were, however, contradictory. The confusion concerning the anatomical identity of the water reservoir in the Galapagos tortoise, Geochelone elephantopus, persisted throughout the nineteenth century, and continued when studies of tortoise water economy and drinking behaviour in arid environments were taken up independently in the desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizii, which inhabits the desert regions in the south-western United States. In 1881 Cox found large sacs filled with clear water under the carapace, but it was half a century later that these sacs were identified as the large bilobed bladder; references to specific water sacs continued to appear in the literature until the 1960s. Since 1970, information on the water economy of desert tortoises has been obtained from extensive field studies. Rates of disappearance of tritiated water injected into the body have shown that during the drought periods of the summer, water turnover (intake) rates do not differ from the rates of metabolic water production. Under these conditions urine is not voided, but is stored in the large bladder. During a drought period the bladder urine increases from initially low osmolality finally to reach isosmolality with the blood plasma. Soluble K+ is the major cation of the urine, but large amounts of K+ are also present as precipitated urates. During a drought period the body is in negative water balance, but despite substantial losses of total body water, the plasma concentrations of Na+ and Cl- can remain constant for many months, indicating regulation of the extracellular fluid and water content of the body tissues by reabsorption of water from the urinary bladder. The bladder thus acts both as a store for nitrogenous waste and K+ and as a water reservoir during droughts. Following rain showers, there is a sharp decline in tritium activity correlated with copious drinking from temporary pools of rain water. The old bladder urine is voided and most of the water drunk is stored as a highly dilute urine. In 1676 Perrault observed that in a freshwater turtle, Emys orbicularis, but not in the giant tortoise, two other bladders opened into the cloaca. By the mid-twentieth century it had been established that these cloacal bladders typically were restricted to species of chelonians that led a semi-terrestrial or semi-aquatic life. The function of the bladders has been debated since Townson observed in 1799 that dehydrated freshwater turtles took up water by anal drinking, suggesting that anal drinking served in the water economy of semi-terrestrial turtles. Since then, the bladders have been ascribed hydrostatic and respiratory functions, but the recent literature mostly argues for a respiratory function. The possible role of the cloacal bladders as a water reservoir in amphibious turtles is still open. Terrestrial amphibians and tortoises are unique among vertebrates in possessing large urinary bladders that may function as water reservoirs in dry environments. (ABSTRACT TRUNCATED)

Abstract
Central testosterone aromatization is required for the activation of both appetitive (ASB) and consummatory (CSB) male sexual behavior in Japanese quail. There are two major clusters of aromatase immunoreactive (ARO-ir) cells in the rostral forebrain; these outline the nucleus preopticus medialis (POM) and the nucleus striae terminalis (BST). We investigated the role of these nuclei in the regulation of ASB and CSB. Appetitive male sexual behavior was measured with the use of a learned social proximity procedure that quantified the time spent by a male in front of a window with a view of a female who was subsequently released into the cage, providing an opportunity for CSB. Males first acquired the response and then received bilateral electrolytic lesions aimed at the POM or BST, followed by retesting for ASB and CSB. Brain sections were stained for ARO-ir, and lesions to the two ARO-ir cell groups were quantitatively characterized. Lesions damaging the POM completely abolished CSB and also significantly decreased ASB. Lesions of the rostral BST had no effect on ASB, but moderately decreased CSB. Detailed anatomical analysis revealed that lesions of a subdivision of the POM just rostral to the anterior commissure specifically impair CSB, whereas lesions that are more rostral to this subdivision induce a severe deficit in ASB. These data indicate that different subregions of the POM regulate ASB and CSB in a somewhat independent manner, whereas the BST is only important in the regulation of CSB.

Abstract
It has been postulated that male newts emit pheromones that attract females of the same species. Female newts of the species Cynops pyrrhogaster were attracted to water in which sexually active conspecific males had been kept, but not to water in which abdominal gland-ablated males had been kept, indicating that the attracting pheromone was secreted by or through the abdominal gland of the cloaca. An attempt has been made to isolate and characterize the female-attracting pheromone in the abdominal glands of male newts. Female-attracting activity was monitored using a preference test. The active substance was isolated by two steps of purification using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Direct sequencing of the final product revealed that it is a decapeptide with the amino acid sequence Ser-Ile-Pro-Ser-Lys-Asp-Ala-Leu-Leu-Lys. Its minimum effective concentration was estimated to be between 0.1 pM and 1.0 pM. The synthetic peptide showed a female-attracting activity similar to that of the native peptide. It seems to act through the olfactory organ of female newts, because the effect of the peptide was blocked by bilateral nostril plugging with cotton balls soaked in melted vaseline. An antiserum against sodefrin was generated in a rabbit. An immunoelectron microscopic study using this antiserum revealed that sodefrin exists predominantly within secretory granules in the epithelial cells of the abdominal glands. A radioimmunoassay for sodefrin was developed in which the antiserum was used along with sodefrin which was N-terminally extended with a tyrosine residue as a radioligand. The immunoassayable sodefrin content in C. pyrrhogaster males was diminished by castration and hypophysectomy. The sodefrin content was increased markedly in the castrated and hypophysectomized newts after treatment with both testosterone and prolactin. Testosterone but not prolactin increased the sodefrin content to a lesser extent. Aqueous extract of the abdominal glands of C. ensicauda showed no inhibition of binding in this assay. Moreover, C. ensicauda females were insensitive to sodefrin, although they were attracted to a water extract of abdominal glands from males of their own species. On the other hand, C. pyrrhogaster females responding to sodefrin were not attracted to the water extract of the abdominal glands from C. ensicauda males. Sequence analyses of sodefrin cDNA clones obtained from a C. ensicauda abdominal gland cDNA library revealed that the cDNA encoded a variant type of sodefrin peptide with substitutions of Leu3 and Gln8. The synthetic [Leu3, Gln8]-sodefrin attracted C. ensicauda females but not C. pyrrhogaster females. These results indicate that the female-attracting pheromone differs between these two species of genus Cynops.

Abstract
The Gambel's race of white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii) migrates each year from their wintering grounds in the Southwestern United States to the Arctic to breed. Associated with this migration is a change in both the nonstressed and the stress-induced levels of circulating plasma corticosterone. Birds were captured at two sites on their wintering grounds (New Mexico and Arizona). Although stress-induced corticosterone levels were elevated at each site compared to nonstressed levels, there were no differences between wintering sites. These were also similar to levels in birds caught in Washington state during fall migration. In contrast, nonstressed corticosterone values were greatly elevated in birds on their breeding grounds in Alaska and similar to stress-induced levels in wintering birds. Corticosterone levels rose even further in response to the stress of capture and handling in breeding birds. These augmented corticosterone levels during breeding were not associated with weather. Both nonstressed and stress-induced corticosterone levels were similar in birds caught on their breeding grounds on two different years, one with temperatures during mid-May of approximately 0 degree C during a snow storm and the other with temperatures in the mid-20s. These results suggest that seasonal physiological changes, and not local conditions, underlie seasonal changes in corticosterone levels. Furthermore, birds caught in Washington state during spring migration had intermediate levels of both nonstressed and stress-induced corticosterone. Corticosterone release may function differently during spring and fall migrations.

Abstract
Two indicators of nocturnal digestive activity were identified in pigeons. Experiment 1 showed that a sizable amount of food empties from the crop while pigeons are inactive during the night. Experiment 2 showed that the number and volume of cloacal droppings during the night were directly related to the volume of food consumed during the day. The temporal pattern of cloacal droppings in the night was systematically related to features of the nocturnal body temperature (Tb) curves, suggesting that excretory activity is thermogenic in its own right and/or that it is a marker for a thermogenic process in the upper digestive tract. Questions about the relationship between digestion-related thermogenesis and shivering thermogenesis during the night in birds are highlighted by these findings.
