Abstract
In this study, emulsions stabilized by octenyl succinic anhydride-modified broken japonica rice starch (OSA-BJRS) were prepared at different ultrasonic power intensities for the delivery, controlled release, and improved bioavailability of quercetin. The OSA-BJRS emulsions ultrasonicated at 400 W exhibited the highest encapsulation efficiency (89.37 %) and loading efficiency (58.34 %) of quercetin, the smallest volume-average droplet diameter (0.51 μm) and polydispersity index (0.19), the highest absolute value of the ζ-potential (26.73 mV), and the highest apparent viscosity and viscoelasticity. The oxidation stability, storage stability, thermal stability, and salt ion stability of the emulsions were also notably improved by the ultrasonication treatment. In addition, the results of the simulated in vitro digestion demonstrated that the ultrasonicated OSA-BJRS emulsions had an enhanced quercetin delivery performance and could stably transport quercetin to the small intestine for digestion. The OSA-BJRS emulsion ultrasonicated at 400 W exhibited the highest cumulative release rate (95.91 %) and the highest bioavailability (30.48 %) of quercetin. This suggests that OSA-BJRS emulsions prepared by ultrasonication can be considered effective delivery systems for hydrophobic functional components.

Abstract
Starchy materials with good antioxidant, emulsification and adsorption properties have potential applications in industry. To improve these properties, a Dual-functional porous starch was prepared through one-pot synthesis. In this case, octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) and syringic acid (SA) were selected to modify the porous starch (PS) by esterification, with subsequent signals recorded by 1H NMR at 1.2 ppm and FT-IR at 1743 cm-1, indicating the formation of Dual-functional porous starch grafted by OSA and SA. N2 adsorption analysis further proved that the porous structure (2.9 m2g-1) was still maintained after modification. This was followed by measurements of droplet size distribution (34.18 ± 3.80 μm), zeta potential (-39.62 ± 1.89 mV) and emulsion index (85.10 ± 1.76 %), all of which indicated good emulsifying capacity. Meanwhile, results of radical scavenging assay proved that the Dual-functional porous starch had considerable antioxidant properties due to the introduction of SA groups. Besides, the Dual-functional porous starch also showed good resistance to digestion. These findings not only provide a novel strategy for constructing multi-functionalized starchy materials, but also open up potential applications of starch in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA)-modified starches have gained widespread interest, but the modification can produce two starches with different states ignored. Herein, the two types of starches, esterified starch (ES) and pregelatinized esterified starch (PES), prepared by OSA modification were separated, and their structural and functional characteristics were comprehensively explored. Results showed that compared with native starch (NS), ES and PES exhibited high water-holding capacity, solubility, and swelling power and significantly decreased pasting temperature and thermal stability. Dynamic rheological tests illustrated that OSA modification changed the rheological behavior of starches. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that PES with higher degree of substitution showed more obvious ester carbonyl and carboxylate groups than ES. Laser confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy revealed that the short-range molecular order of ES, especially PES, decreased after modification. X-ray diffraction indicated that OSA modification disrupted the crystalline structure of starch, and that more amylose-lipid complex was formed in PES. Scanning electron microscopy showed that OSA modification eroded starchs surface and reduced its smoothness, and significantly disrupted PES integrity. ES and PES could be developed as food additives for retrogradation inhibition of dough. These results provide new insights into OSA modification and expand its functional application in foods.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the influence of ball milling assisted treatment on the degree of substitution of octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) modified highland barley starch (HBS) and on the physicochemical properties and structure of HBS. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) findings showed that with the increasing of ball milling time, the surface morphology of OSA modified HBS became rougher and rougher and the particle morphology and crystal structure were damaged. When the pretreatment time of ball milling was 40 min, the degree of substitution of OSA modified HBS was 1.32 times higher than that of the conventional modification method. In addition, the longer the ball milling assistant, the longer the short-range ordering of the OSA modified HBS significantly decreased, and the relative crystallinity decreased (from 16.68 % to 7.93 %), leading to a decrease in thermal stability too. However, it greatly enhanced the aging resistance and flowability. In terms of emulsification properties, the emulsification properties of OSA modified HBS increased from 60.67 % to 75.67 %. Therefore, the HBS with better freeze-thaw stability and higher degree of substitution can be prepared by ball milling pretreatment and OSA modification, which provides technical support for further development of starch resources.

Abstract
The emulsifying properties of emulsions are significantly influenced by the structural properties of octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) starch. The purpose of this work was to elucidate the effect of the structure of OSA starch on its performance as an emulsifier to stabilize Pickering high-internal-phase emulsions (HIPEs). The degrees of substitution (DS) of the three OSA starches were 0.0137, 0.0177 and 0.0236, and their degrees of branching (DB) were 13.96 %, 14.20 % and 14.32 % measured by 1H NMR, which were sequentially labeled as OSA1, OSA2, and OSA3. The OSA3 starch with higher DS and DB had a lower critical micelle concentration (CMC) (0.11 mg/mL). Its emulsification activity (EAI) and emulsion stability (ES) were 61.8 m2/g and 72.5 min, respectively, which were higher than OSA1 and OSA2 starches. The contact angle of the three OSA starches increased from 45.35° to 80.03° with increasing DS and DB. Therefore, it is hypothesized that OSA3 starches have better emulsification properties. The results of physical stability of HIPEs confirmed the above results. These results indicated that DS and DB have a synergistic effect on emulsion properties, and OSA starch with higher DS and DB values were more conducive to the construction of stable HIPEs systems.

Abstract
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC)-based microparticles and modified starch emulsions (OSA-MS) were loaded with resveratrol and characterized regarding their physicochemical and thermal properties. Both delivery systems were subject to an in vitro gastrointestinal digestion to assess the bioaccessibility of resveratrol. In addition, cell-based studies were conducted after in vitro digestion and cytotoxicity and oxidative stress were assessed. HPMC-based microparticles displayed higher average sizes (d) and lower polydispersity index (PDI) (d = 948 nm, PDI < 0.2) when compared to OSA-MS-based emulsions (d = 217 nm, PDI < 0.3). Both proved to protect resveratrol under digestive conditions, leading to an increase in bioaccessibility. Resveratrol-loaded HPMC-microparticles showed a higher bioaccessibility (56.7 %) than resveratrol-loaded emulsions (19.7 %). Digested samples were tested in differentiated co-cultures of Caco-2 and HT29-MTX, aiming at assessing cytotoxicity and oxidative stress, and a lack of cytotoxicity was observed for all samples. Results displayed an increasing antioxidant activity, with 1.6-fold and 1.4-fold increases over the antioxidant activity of free resveratrol, for HPMC-microparticles and OSA-MS nanoemulsions, respectively. Our results offer insight into physiological relevancy due to assessment post-digestion and highlight the protection that the use of micro-nano delivery systems can confer to resveratrol and their potential to be used as functional food ingredients capable of providing antioxidant benefits upon consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the present study, the insoluble fraction of Persian gum (IFPG) was modified with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) and its various properties were assessed. In addition, the effect of OSA-IFPG on the rheological and textural properties of dairy cream was investigated. RESULTS Suitable conditions for achieving a degree of substitution (DS) of 0.023 were found at pH 9, IFPG concentration 4 wt%, OSA concentration 10 wt% and a temperature of 40 °C, within 120 min. The carbonyl group attachment in OSA-IFPG was also confirmed via Fourier transform infrared and H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1 H-NMR). While the X-ray diffraction test indicated no significant changes in the structure of the IFPG after modification with OSA, esterification increased the negative charge density, decreased thermal decomposition temperature and increased the emulsifying capacity to 100%, which was obtained for the first time. The use of OSA-modified IFPG in creams augmented the complex viscosity, loss and storage modulus, while also demonstrating the creation of a pseudo-gel network. The hardness and adhesiveness of the texture increased, which can be explained by the formation of a compact structure and reduced particle size. CONCLUSION Overall, OSA-IFPG with hydrophilic and hydrophobic sections may function as an emulsifier and be recommended as a safe source of hydrocolloids for emulsion stability. It can also provide a positive physical structure when added to dairy cream, even if the fat concentration is lower than usual. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
In the present work, a dual-modified waxy rice starch (OOWRS) fabricated with OSA and ozone was successfully used to stabilize the O/W Pickering emulsion. The molecular structure, surface properties, and underlying stabilizing mechanism were systematically investigated. The results showed that oxidation occurring on the surface of OSA-modified waxy rice starch (OSAWRS) resulted in the presence of indentations and cracks. The relative crystallinity of starch was generally decreased with increasing degree of oxidation. Due to the introduction of carbonyl and the variation in surface structure, the hydrophobicity and acidity of OSAWRS were significantly enhanced after the ozone treatment. Remarkably, OOWRS stabilized Pickering emulsion exhibited a feature of typical O/W emulsion, and the 0.5 h and 1 h OOWRS emulsion exhibited a more uniform droplet size as well as a higher surface potential. We also noted that a weak-gel network was formed within the OOWRS emulsion system as the hydrophilic starch chains played a bridging role. Two reasons for the improved stability of the emulsion were the special gel structure and the enhanced electrical repulsion among the droplets. This research provides that ozone-conjugated OSA modification is a promising strategy for improving the emulsion ability of starch-based Pickering emulsions.

Abstract
Octenyl succinic anhydride modified porous starch (OSA-PS) with degrees of substitution (DS) from 0.0123 to 0.0427 were prepared by aqueous phase method. From SEM, PS had a porous structure which showed a rough and corrosive surface after esterification with OSA. FT-IR revealed the characteristic peaks of OSA-PS at 1725 cm-1 and 1570 cm-1. From 1H NMR spectra, OSA-PS displayed extra chemical signal peaks at 0.85 ppm, 1.25 ppm and 1.96 ppm. These results fully demonstrated that OSA groups were successfully grafted onto PS. Furthermore, as DS increased, the specific surface area (5.6464 m2/g), pore volume (0.9959 × 10-2 cm3/g) and methylene blue adsorption capacity (24.3962 mg/g) of OSA-PS reached the maximum, while its relative crystallinity (26.8112 %) and maximum thermal decomposition temperature (291.96 °C) were the minimum. In vitro digestion studies showed that with the increase of DS, OSA-PS' contents of rapidly digestible starch and slowly digestible starch decreased from 9.06 % to 6.27 % and 28.38 % to 14.61 %, respectively. In contrast, its resistant starch had an increase in content from 62.56 % to 79.12%. The results provided an effective method for obtaining a double-modified starch with high specific surface area and anti-digestibility, thus broadening the industrial application of starch.

Abstract
Octenyl succinic anhydride modified tamarind seed polysaccharides (OTSPs) with various degrees of substitution were first synthesized and characterized in this work. The structural, solid-state, solution and emulsifying properties of the OTSPs and the effect of the degree of substitution (DS) were investigated. The structural characterization confirmed the successful grafting of the OSA moiety into TSP and the chain extension of the OTSPs. The hydrophobicity of the modified polysaccharide molecules increased, the absolute value of the zeta potential increased, and the thermal stability decreased, which were positively or negatively correlated with the changes in DS. In contrast, the hydrolysis of polysaccharides in alkaline aqueous solution led to a decrease in molar mass and the rigidity of the molecules, which were not significantly related to DS. Particle size analysis showed that OTSPs tended to aggregate into relatively small agglomerates, which was confirmed by the results of morphological analysis. Most importantly, the instability indices of emulsions stabilized by TSP, arabic gum and OSA-starch were 0.521, 0.715, and 0.804, respectively, while for OTSPs this parameter was between 0.04 and 0.19 under the same conditions, indicating better physical stability of the OTSP-stabilized emulsions, especially for OTSP-30. Overall, OTSP has great potential as an emulsifier for oil-in-water emulsions, especially for emulsification and stabilization in food processing.

Abstract
Functional properties and ability to stabilize Pickering emulsions of amaranth starch with the novel nonenyl succinic anhydride (NSA) modification and the widely used octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) modification were compared. The NSA modification was more effective in altering the rheological properties of amaranth starches. NSA-modified amaranth starch showed significantly higher peak viscosity (7.13 Pa·s at DS of 0.02209) than the OSA-modified amaranth starch (6.10 Pa·s at DS of 0.03042). The gelatinization temperature, gelatinization enthalpy, and relative crystallinity of amaranth starch were more affected by the OSA than the NSA. The Pickering emulsions stabilized with NSA-modified starches had higher stability than those with the OSA-modified starches as characterized by particle size distribution, morphological, and rheological approaches. A lower degree of substitution by NSA than by OSA is needed to achieve a similar emulsification capacity. Thus, the NSA modification could be an efficient alternative to OSA modification in tailoring physicochemical and rheological functions, as well as stabilizing Pickering emulsions.

Abstract
Starch-lipid-protein complexes are attracting increasing attention due to their unique structure and low enzymatic digestibility. However, the mechanisms underlying the formation of these ternary complexes, especially those with monoglycerides as the lipid component, remain unclear. In the present study, potato starch or octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA)-modified potato starch (OSAPS), various monoglycerides (MGs), and beta-lactoglobulin (βLG) were used in model systems to characterize the formation, structure, and in vitro digestibility of the respective ternary complexes. Colorimetry and live/dead staining assays demonstrated that the OSAPS had good biocompatibility. Experimental data and molecular dynamics simulations showed that both unmodified potato starch and OSAPS formed starch-lipid-protein complexes with MGs and βLG. Of the two types of starch, OSA formed a greater amount of the more stable type II V-crystallites in complexes, which had greater resistance to in vitro enzymic digestion. This study demonstrated for the first time that starch can interact with MGs and βLG to form ternary complexes and that OSA esterification of starch promoted the formation of more complexes than unmodified starch.

Abstract
Octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) modification of amyloid proteins fibrils (APFs) was employed to improve dispersibility and ice recrystallization inhibition activity. OSA mainly reacted with the amino groups of APFs without significantly changing morphology. OSA-modified APFs (OAPFs) had lower pI, carried more negative charges, and were more hydrophobic. OSA-modification showed a pH-dependent effect on the dispersibility of fibrils. At pH 7.0, OSA-modification improved dispersibility and inhibited heat-induced gelation of fibrils at weakened electrostatic repulsion. OAPFs were more prone to aggregation with lower dispersity at acidic pH values and demonstrated stronger IRI activity than unmodified fibrils at pH 7.0. Our findings indicate OSA-modification favors the industrial application of APFs as an ice recrystallization inhibitor with enhanced dispersibility.

Abstract
β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-based emulsion gels encapsulated with nutrition for three-dimensional (3D) printing are promising, while obstacles such as low bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds and the molding process in food manufacturing hinder their application. This study intended to develop stable composite emulsion gels using the complexes of chitosan (CS) and octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA)-modified β-CD (OCD) to conquer these challenges. The esterification of OSA generated more negatively charged OCD and ester groups, which aided in the combination of OCD and CS through enhanced electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions. The addition of CS improved the emulsification properties of the complexes and acted as a bridge link in the aqueous phase, thereby increasing the gel strength of the composite emulsion gels. Moreover, the encapsulation of β-carotene destabilized the strength of the emulsion gels by lowering the interfacial tension. The emulsion gel stabilized by OCD3/CS-0.75% at an initial pH not only successfully encapsulated β-carotene and presented the highest bioaccessibility of 41.88 ± 0.87% in the in vitro digestion but also showed excellent 3D printability. These results provided a promising strategy to enhance the viscoelasticity of β-CD-based emulsion gels and accelerate their application in bioactive compound delivery systems and 3D food printing.

Abstract
Polysaccharides can be esterified with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) to form derivatives with amphiphilic properties. The general preparation methods of OSA-polysaccharides are described, especially the aqueous method. The new hydrophobic groups introduced result in OSA-polysaccharides showing higher interfacial properties, better emulsifying stability, higher viscosity, and lower digestibility. There have been advances in the development of OSA-polysaccharides-based nano-encapsulation systems for hydrophobic bioactive compounds in recent years. Nano-encapsulation systems are formed through nanoemulsions, nanocapsules, nanoparticles, micelles, vesicles, molecular inclusion complexes, and so on. This review aims to describe the preparation methods, the structure characterizations, and the physicochemical properties of OSA-polysaccharides as encapsulating agents. In addition, the focus is on the different nano-encapsulation systems based on OSA-polysaccharides as wall materials. Future perspectives will concern OSA-polysaccharides-based nano-encapsulation systems with optimized functional properties for providing higher bioavailability and targeted delivery of various hydrophobic bioactive compounds. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Quinoa starch granular structure as affected by nonenyl succinic anhydride (NSA) substitution was investigated by multiple approaches, including scattering, spectroscopic, and microscopic techniques. The modification had little impact on the morphology of starch granules. The NSA substitution was found mainly in the amorphous lamellae and amorphous growth rings. The NSA modification increased the thickness of the amorphous lamellae. The homogeneity of the ordered structure in the granules was improved, probably because the NSA modification reduced the amount of defects in the semi-crystalline growth ring. Compared to other chemical modifications such as acylation, succinylation was more effective in modifying the starch lamellar structure. A possible reaction pattern of NSA modification on quinoa starch is proposed, in which the NSA modification may follow the sequence of amorphous growth rings, the amorphous matrices among blocklets, amorphous and crystalline lamellae in semi-crystalline growth rings. This study provides new insights on the structural changes of starch granules induced by succinylation on the supramolecular level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Curcumin has become increasingly popular in functional foods and beverages field as a result of its high biological activity. Nevertheless, the application of curcumin is usually limited by its poor water solubility, low absorption, rapid metabolism and instability. Accordingly, the development of an appropriate wall material is crucial for its effective use. In the present study, curcumin-octenyl succinic anhydride modified pullulan (Cur-OSAP) micelles were successfully prepared by an anti-solvent co-precipitation method. RESULTS Octenyl succinic anhydride modified pullulan (OSAP) micelles exhibited the highest encapsulation efficiency (57.31%) and loading capacity (5.73%) of curcumin when the mass ratio of OSAP to curcumin was 10:1 and the degree of substitution of OSAP was 0.0469, at which point Cur-OSAP micelles formed via hydrogen binding and hydrophobic interactions, as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and fluorescence techniques. The transmission electron microscopy results showed that the Cur-OSAP micelles were roughly spherical in shape with diameters in the approximate range 30-60 nm. CONCLUSION The encapsulation of OSAP greatly improved photostability and sustained release properties of curcumin in Cur-OSAP micelles. These findings suggest that OSAP can be used as a carrier to encapsulate and protect hydrophobic food ingredients. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
An emulsifier with a targeted antioxidant effect was prepared using the inclusion complexes of octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA)-modified cassava amylose (CA) and quercetin (Q). The designed emulsifier, a carbohydrate polymer-flavonoid complex, exhibited both amphiphilic and antioxidant properties. To investigate the physical and oxidation stabilities of the prepared emulsion, three types of emulsions were prepared: primary emulsions stabilized by enzyme-modified starch, secondary emulsions stabilized by OSA-CA, and tertiary emulsions stabilized by Q-encapsulated complexes (OSA-CA/Q). The structural characteristics of CA, OSA-CA, and OSA-CA/Q were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and small-angle X-ray scattering analysis. The stabilities of the emulsions were evaluated based on their particle size distribution, zeta potential, creaming stability, and peroxide value. The results showed that the secondary and tertiary emulsions exhibited a relatively narrower particle size distribution than the primary emulsions, but the particle size distribution of the tertiary emulsions was the narrowest (10.42 μm). Moreover, the secondary and tertiary emulsions had lower delamination indices than the primary emulsions after 7 days of storage. The results obtained from the antioxidant experiments indicated that OSA-CA/Q exhibited good oxidation stability for application in emulsion systems.

Abstract
To prepare a robust biocatalyst and enhance the removal of bisphenol A in wastewater, succinic anhydride was reacted with laccase to obtain succinic anhydride-modified laccase (SA-laccase) and then co-crystallized with Cu3(PO4)2 to form SA-laccase@Cu3(PO4)2 hybrid nanoflowers (hNFs). The activity of SA-laccase@Cu3(PO4)2 reached 5.27 U/mg, 1.86-, 2.88- and 2.15-fold those of bare laccase@Cu3(PO4)2, laccase@Ca3(PO4)2 and laccase@epoxy resin, respectively. Compared with free laccase, the obtained hNFs present enhanced activity and tolerance to pH and high temperature in the removal of BPA. Under the optimum conditions of pH 6.0 and 35 °C, BPA removal reached 93.2% using SA-laccase@Cu3(PO4)2 hNFs, which was 1.21-fold of that using free laccase. In addition, the obtained SA-laccase@Cu3(PO4)2 hNFs retained nearly 90% of their initial catalytic activity for BPA removal after 8 consecutive batch cycles. This efficient method for preparing immobilized laccase can also be further developed and improved to acquire green biocatalysts for removing persistent organic pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a life-threatening disease without effective treatment. The utilization of curcumin (Cur) for the treatment of AKI is still facing challenges due to its poor water-solubility and low bioavailability. Herein, kidney-targeted octenyl succinic anhydride-grafted fucoidan loaded with Cur (OSA-Fucoidan/Cur) was fabricated for synergistic treatment of AKI. It was found that OSA-Fucoidan/Cur micelles had a sustained drug release behavior and excellent physicochemical stability. Cellular uptake studies demonstrated that the specific binding between fucoidan and P-selectin overexpressed on H2O2-stimulated HUVECs contributed to the higher internalization of OSA-Fucoidan/Cur micelles by the cells. In addition, OSA-Fucoidan micelles exhibited an ideal kidney-targeted characteristic in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced AKI mice. In vivo studies showed that the combination of Cur and OSA-Fucoidan endowed the OSA-Fucoidan/Cur micelles with synergistically anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities, thereby largely enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of AKI. Therefore, OSA-Fucoidan/Cur micelles may represent a potential kidney-targeted nanomedicine for effective treatment of AKI.

Abstract
The combined effects of succinic anhydride (SA) succinylation and linear dextrin (LD) glycation on whey protein hydrolysates (WPH) and their stabilized emulsions were evaluated. Degree of succinylation (DS), degree of glycation (DG), and degree of browning of samples suggested that a competitive displacement of reactive groups existed when WPH reacted with SA and LD in different orders. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and far-UV circular dichroism (CD) indicated that the order of modification methods had a significant effect on secondary structures of WPH. Succinylation combined with glycation effectively reduced the surface hydrophobicity and increased the molecular flexibility of WPH. Meanwhile, the total free -SH content decreased, and the exposed free -SH content increased. Results of storage stability and gastrointestinal fate of the curcumin-loaded emulsion revealed that the modified WPH with higher DS was more effective for improving the curcumin bioaccessibility, while that with higher DG was more effective for enhancing the stability of the emulsion.

Abstract
The copolymerization of biorenewable succinic anhydride (SA) with propylene oxide (PO) is a promising way to synthesize biodegradable aliphatic polyesters. However, the catalytic systems for this reaction still deserve to be explored because the catalytic activity of the reported catalysts and the molecular weights of produced polyesters are unsatisfied. Herein, we investigate the copolymerization of SA with PO catalyzed by the organoborane/base pairs. The types of Lewis bases, organoboranes, and their loadings all have a large impact on the activity and selectivity of the copolymerization. High ester content of >99% was achieved when performed the PO/SA copolymerization using triethyl borane (TEB)/phosphazene base P1-t-Bu (t-BuP1) pair with a molar ratio of 1/1 at 30-80 °C. Using TEB/t-BuP1 pair with the molar ratio of 4/1 at 80 °C, the turnover of frequency (TOF) was up to 128 h-1 and clearly higher than the known TOF values (0.5-34 h-1) of the PO/SA copolymerization by previously reported catalysts. The number-average molecular weights (Mns) of the resultant polyesters reached up to 20.4 kg/mol when copolymerization was carried out using TEB/t-BuP1 (1/1, in molar ratio) at 30 °C.

Abstract
Succinylation can improve the thermal stability of various proteins. In this study, succinylated egg white protein (SEWP) samples with different succinylation degrees were prepared by adding various succinic anhydride additives to egg white protein (EWP). The thermal stability of SEWP and the conformational structure under various succinylation degrees were investigated. With the increase in succinylation degree, the turbidity of heated SEWP solution (90 °C for 30 min) markedly declined. The heated SEWP solution with high succinylation degree (37.63%, 66.57%, and 72.37%) was transparent. Moreover, the result of differential scanning calorimetry confirmed that the thermal stability of succinylated EWP increased. The results of intrinsic fluorescence spectra and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy illustrate that succinylation changed the conformational structure of EWP. Succinylation increased the electrostatic repulsion and decreased the surface hydrophobicity, and it changed the aggregation morphology of EWP. Cross-linked spherical aggregates of low succinylation degree transformed to thready aggregates of a high succinylation degree. Thus, succinylation improved the thermal stability of EWP.

Abstract
This paper attempted to construct a high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) through altering interfacial behaviors using the electrostatic interaction between positive chitosan and negative octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) starch. The partial polysaccharide complex of OSA starch/chitosan was used to stabilize HIPE, which was able to adsorb at the oil droplet interface and prevent the coalescence of oil droplets. The wettability of OSA starch was enhanced with the addition of positively charged chitosan, leading to the formation of partial complexes. The impact of pH and concentration of chitosan on the droplet size, surface charge, and interface behavior were investigated, and the formation of the polysaccharide complex was further confirmed by atomic force microscopy. The presence of the OSA starch/chitosan complex facilitated the formation of stable HIPE with a gel-like structure and satisfactory centrifugal and oxidative stability. These results are useful to provide information for fabricating polysaccharide-based HIPE delivery systems, which may help expand their application in the food industry.

Abstract
In vitro dynamic aroma release over oil-in-water (o/w) and water-in-oil-in-water (w/o/w) emulsions stabilized with Tween 20 or octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) starch as a hydrophilic emulsifier and polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) as a hydrophobic emulsifier was investigated. The equal-molecular-weight hydrophilic aroma diacetyl (2,3-butanedione) or relatively more-hydrophobic 3-pentanone was added to the emulsions prepared by high speed mixing, or membrane emulsification followed by thickened with xanthan gum removing droplet size distribution and creaming as variables affecting dynamic release. Results showed the differences of w/o/w emulsions in the dynamic release compared to o/w emulsions mainly depended on aroma hydrophobicity, emulsion type, emulsifier-aroma interactions, and creaming. Xanthan led to a reduced headspace replenishment. Interfacially adsorbed OSA starch and xanthan-OSA starch interaction influenced on diacetyl release over emulsions. OSA starch alone interacted with 3-pentanone. This study demonstrates the potential impact of emulsifying and thickening systems on aroma release systems and highlights that specific interactions may compromise product quality.

Abstract
Waxy and non-waxy rice starches from japonica type Korean rice varieties were esterified with different levels of octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), and the molecular structure of amylopectin (AP), digestibility, and emulsion stability were investigated. As OSA levels increased, the degree of substitution, granule size, peak and final viscosities, emulsion stability, and short chain of AP increased. However, the gelatinization temperature and enthalpy, and digestibility decreased. All OSA esterified starches showed a new band at 1723 cm-1, but maintained A-type crystallinity. The DP6-12 of AP in waxy rice starch (WRS) was higher than that in non-waxy rice starch (NRS) with increasing OSA levels. Because the amylose and long chain of AP accessed easily with OSA groups, the digestibility of NRS was lower than that of WRS. The emulsion stability was higher in WRS than in NRS. From the above results, it is suggested that amylose should have a higher affinity with OSA esterification than AP and that the emulsion stability should increase in WRS, but the digestibility should decrease in NRS after OSA modification.

Abstract
Topical chemotherapy with complementary drugs is one of the most promising strategies to achieve an effective antitumor activity. Herein, a synergistic strategy for hepatoma therapy by the combination of tumor microenvironment-sensitive polymer-doxorubicin (DOX) conjugate thermogel, containing a DNA intercalator DOX, and docetaxel (DTX), a microtubule-interfering agent, was proposed. First, cis-aconitic anhydride-functionalized DOX (CAD) and succinic anhydride-modified DOX (SAD) were conjugated onto the terminal hydroxyl groups of poly(lactide-co-glycolide)-block-poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA-PEG-PLGA), yielding the acid-sensitive CAD-PLGA-PEG-PLGA-CAD and the insensitive SAD-PLGA-PEG-PLGA-SAD conjugates, respectively. The prodrug aqueous solution exhibited a thermoreversible sol-gel transition between room and physiological temperature. Meantime, appropriate mechanical property, biodegradability, as well as a sustained release profile were revealed in such prodrug thermogels. More importantly, the addition of DTX to the DOX-conjugated thermogels (i.e., Gel-CAD and Gel-SAD) was verified with enhanced curative effect against tumor, where the antitumor efficacy of Gel-CAD+DTX was obviously higher than the other groups. A reliable security in vivo was also showed in the Gel-CAD+DTX group. Taken together, such combination of tumor microenvironment-labile prodrug thermogel and a complementary drug exhibited fascinating prospect for local synergistic antineoplastic therapy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Multidrug chemotherapy with synergistic effect has been proposed recently for hepatoma treatment in the clinic. However, the quick release, fast elimination, and unselectivity of multidrugs in vivo always limit their further application. To solve this problem, a synergistic combination of tumor microenvironment-sensitive polymeric doxorubicin (DOX) prodrug thermogel for DNA intercalation and a microtubule-interfering agent docetaxel (DTX) is developed in the present study for the local chemotherapy of hepatoma. Interestingly, a pH-triggered sustained release behavior, an enhanced antitumor efficacy, and a favorable security in vivo are observed in the combined dual-drug delivery platform. Therefore, effectively combining tumor microenvironment-labile polymeric prodrug thermogel with a complementary drug provides an advanced system and a promising prospect for local synergistic hepatoma chemotherapy.

Abstract
Porang is a local plant of Indonesia, which has a high content of glucomannan. In this study, porang glucomannan (PG) was esterified with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) to enhance emulsion properties to be widely used in food industry. OSA-modified PG (OSA-PG) enhanced the phagocytosis activity of macrophage-like J774.1 cells and mouse peritoneal macrophages. In addition, OSA-PG increased the production of IL-6 and TNF-α by enhancing their gene expression. Immunoblot analysis displayed that OSA-PG tended to activate both nuclear factor-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase cascades. Treatment of OSA-PG with polymyxin B revealed that cytokine production induced by OSA-PG was not caused by endotoxin contamination. Our findings also indicated that OSA-PG activates macrophages through not only Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4, but another receptor. Overall findings suggested that OSA-PG has a potential as an immunomodulatory food factor by stimulating macrophages.

Abstract
Indolizyl-5-lithium anions react with succinic and phtalic anhidrides giving 1,4-keto acids, with oxallyl chloride giving 1,2-diketone, and with ethyl pyruvate giving 1,2-hydroxyacid. However, with α-halocarbonyl compounds, they react in different ways, forming the products of selective bromination at C-5 (with α-bromo ketones and esters of α-bromo acids) and 5-chloroacetyl indolizines.

Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are green chemicals that have the potential to replace traditional solvents in chemical reactions. In this study, urea-LiCl DES was used successfully as a reaction medium in the anionic functionalization of wood cellulose with succinic anhydride. The effects of reaction temperature and time on the carboxyl content and yield were evaluated. The analyses of the degree of polymerization and crystallinity revealed that the DES was a nondegrading and nondissolving reaction medium. Three samples with the highest carboxyl contents were further nanofibrillated with a microfluidizer to diameters of 2-7 nm, as observed by atomic force microscopy. Samples treated at 70-80 °C for 2 h gave the best outcome and resulted in highly viscose and transparent gels. The sample treated at 90 °C contained larger nanoparticles and larger aggregates owing to the occurrence of possible side reactions but resulted in better thermal stability.

Abstract
Ethyl succinic anhydride and its d5-labeled version have been synthesized and applied to quantitative analysis of peptides in combination with MALDI or ESI mass spectrometry. These modifiers react with amino groups in the N-termini and lysine side chains in proteins, and therefore the combination of these modifiers was shown to be a useful tool for quantification of peptides and hence for proteomics research.

Abstract
The emulsifying ability of OSA-modified and native starch in the granular form, in the dissolved state and a combination of both was compared. This study aims to understand mixed systems of particles and dissolved starch with respect to what species dominates at droplet interfaces and how stability is affected by addition of one of the species to already formed emulsions. It was possible to create emulsions with OSA-modified starch isolated from Quinoa as sole emulsifier. Similar droplet sizes were obtained with emulsions prepared at 7% (w/w) oil content using OSA-modified starch in the granular form or molecularly dissolved but large differences were observed regarding stability. Pickering emulsions kept their droplet size constant after one month while emulsions formulated with OSA-modified starch dissolved exhibited coalescence. All emulsions stabilized combining OSA-modified starch in granular form and in solution showed larger mean droplet sizes with no significant differences with respect to the order of addition. These emulsions were unstable due to coalescence regarding presence of free oil. Similar results were obtained when emulsions were prepared by combining OSA-modified granules with native starch in solution. The degree of surface coverage of starch granules was much lower in presence of starch in solution which indicates that OSA-starch is more surface active in the dissolved state than in granular form, although it led to unstable systems compared to starch granule stabilized Pickering emulsions, which demonstrated to be extremely stable.

Abstract
Starch has been an inexhaustible subject of research for many decades. It is an inexpensive, readily-available material with extensive application in the food and processing industry. Researchers are continually trying to improve its properties by different modification procedures and expand its application. What is mostly applied in this view are their chemical modifications, among which organic acids have recently drawn the greatest attention, particularly with respect to the application of starch in the food industry. Namely, organic acids naturally occur in many edible plants and many of them are generally recognized as safe (GRAS), which make them ideal modification agents for starch intended for the food industry. The aim of this review is to give a short literature overview of the progress made in the research of starch esterification, etherification, cross-linking, and dual modification with organic acids and their derivatives.

Abstract
A large volume of wood waste is produced in timber processing industry which traditionally used in low value applications. Here, value addition to the wood waste (Sander dust) and cellulose, hemicellulose isolated thereof by functionalisation using cyclic anhydrides in a solvent-free and green reactive extrusion process is reported. The effect of extrusion temperature, catalyst and different weight ratios of Sander dust (SD):succinic anhydride (SA) on the esterification reaction is evaluated. The esterified products were characterised by the acid value, degree of substitution (DS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), solid state (13)C NMR and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). Under optimum extrusion conditions, mixed esters are formed, with highest acid value obtained for succinylation of cellulose (0.122 g/g at DS of 0.350) which is two times higher compared to succinylated SD (0.059 g/g at a weight gain of 0.452) and hemicellulose (0.043 g/g at DS of 0.290). The reactivity trend for individual anhydride was: (1) SA-Cellulose>SD>hemicellulose; (2) maleic anhydride (MA)-SD>hemicellulose>cellulose and (3) dodecenyl succinic anhydride (DDSA)-SD ≈ cellulose ≫ hemicellulose. The pendant free carboxyl groups generated through functionalisation of wood waste, cellulose and hemicellulose without the presence of polymeric carriers will allow more tailored or targeted modification of wood-plastic composites.

Abstract
Banana starch was esterified with octenylsuccinic anhydride (OSA) at different degree substitution (DS) and used to stabilize emulsions. Morphology, emulsion stability, emulsification index, rheological properties and particle size distribution of the emulsions were tested. Emulsions dyed with Solvent Red 26 showed affinity for the oil phase. Backscattering light showed three regions in the emulsion where the emulsified region was present. Starch concentration had higher effect in the emulsification index (EI) than the DS used in the study because similar values were found with OSA-banana and native starches. However, OSA-banana presented greater stability of the emulsified region. Rheological tests in emulsions with OSA-banana showed G'>G" values and low dependence of G' with the frequency, indicating a dominant elastic response to shear. When emulsions were prepared under high-pressure conditions, the emulsions with OSA-banana starch with different DS showed a bimodal distribution of particle size. The emulsion with OSA-banana starch and the low DS showed similar mean droplet diameter than its native counterpart. In contrast, the highest DS led to the highest mean droplet diameter. It is concluded that OSA-banana starch with DS can be used to stabilize specific emulsion types.

Abstract
A series of alkenylated inulin samples were synthesized in aqueous solution using alkenyl succinic anhydrides with varying alkenyl chain lengths (C8-C18). The inulin derivatives (ASA-inulins) were characterized using NMR and FTIR and their degree of substitution determined. The solution properties of ASA-inulins were investigated using dye solubilization, surface tension, and dynamic light scattering, and all three techniques confirmed that the molecules aggregated in solution above a critical concentration (critical aggregation concentration, CAC). The value of the CAC was found to be reasonably consistent between the different techniques and was shown to decrease with increasing alkenyl chain length, from 0.08% for the octenyl succinylated sample to 0.005% for the octadecenyl succinylated sample. The hydrodynamic diameter of ASA-inulins above the CAC was determined from dynamic light scattering studies and was shown to increase with alkenyl chain length, from 4 nm for the octenyl derivative to 55 nm for the hexadecenyl derivative. All ASA-inulins were shown to be able to produce oil-in-water emulsions with a droplet size similar to that of emulsions prepared using Tween 20 on storing for 21 days. The fact that the derivatives are able to form micellarlike aggregates and stabilize emulsions makes them suitable candidates for the encapsulation and delivery of water-insoluble active compounds, with potential application in food, cosmetic, personal care, and pharmaceutical formulations.

Abstract
Esterifications of the tree-based gum, gum karaya (GK), using dodecenylsuccinic anhydride (DDSA) were carried out in aqueous solutions. GK was deacetylated using alkali treatment to obtain deacetylated gum karaya (DGK). The DGK and its DDSA derivative were characterized using gel permeation chromatography/multiangle laser light scattering (GPC/MALLS), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, and rheological studies. The degree of substitution was found to be 10.25% for DGK using (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The critical aggregation concentration of DDSA-DGK was determined using dye solubilization and surface tension methods. The antibacterial activity of the DDSA-DGK derivative was then investigated against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. The DDSA-DGK derivative has the potential for use as a stabilizing agent in food and nonfood applications. It can also be developed as an antibacterial agent.

Abstract
The in vivo slow digestion property of octenyl succinic anhydride modified waxy corn starch (OSA-starch) in the presence of tea polyphenols (TPLs) was studied. Using a mouse model, the experimental results showed an extended and moderate postprandial glycemic response with a delayed and significantly decreased blood glucose peak of OSA-starch after cocooking with TPLs (5% starch weight base). Further studies revealed an increased hydrodynamic radius of OSA-starch molecules indicating an interaction between OSA-starch and TPLs. Additionally, decreased gelatinization temperature and enthalpy and reduced viscosity and emulsifiability of OSA-starch support their possible complexation to form a spherical OSA-starch-TPLs (OSAT) complex. The moderate and extended postprandial glycemic response is likely caused by decreased activity of mucosal α-glucosidase, which is noncompetitively inhibited by tea catechins released from the complex during digestion. Meanwhile, a significant decrease of malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased DPPH free radical scavenging activity in small intestine tissue demonstrated the antioxidative functional property of the OSAT complex. Thus, the complex of OSAT, acting as a functional carbohydrate material, not only leads to a flattened and prolonged glycemic response but also reduces the oxidative stress, which might be beneficial to health.

Abstract
The ultrasound-assisted synthesis of lutein disuccinate from all-trans lutein (AL) and succinic anhydride (SA) was investigated in this study. Triethylamine was used as the catalyst. Based on the single-factor experiments, a 7-level-3-factor uniform design and response surface analysis were further employed to evaluate the effects of the selected variables including molar ratio of SA/AL, reaction time and ultrasonic power on the yield of lutein disuccinate. The results indicated that the data were adequately fitted into a second-order polynomial model; the molar ratio of SA/AL significantly affected the synthesis of lutein disuccinate, whereas reaction time and ultrasonic power did not. Based on ridge max analysis, the optimum condition for lutein disuccinate synthesis was predicted to be the molar ratio of SA/AL 265.3:1, ultrasonic power 300 W and reaction time 131.6 min with the lutein disuccinate yield of 80.53±0.18%, which give a 43.8% increase compared with the traditional method, and also significantly shorten the reaction time.

Abstract
Adsorption of poly(ethylene glycol), hydrophobically end-capped with octadecenylsuccinic anhydride (OSA-PEG-OSA), on an ultrathin film of cellulose has been studied by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Normally, PEG does not adsorb on cellulosic surfaces, but the use of the telechelic hydrophobic modification was found to promote adsorption. The influence of the conformation of the polymer in solution prior to adsorption and the subsequent properties of the adsorbed layer were investigated. The adsorption experiments were done at concentrations below and above the critical association concentration. The adsorption of OSA-PEG-OSA on cellulose was observed to occur in four distinct stages. Because of the amphiphilic nature of cellulose, further adsorption experiments were performed on hydrophobic (polystyrene) and hydrophilic (silica) model substrates to illuminate the contribution of hydrophobic and hydrophilic factors in the adsorption phenomenon. As expected, the kinetics and the mechanism of adsorption were strongly dependent on the chemical composition of the substrate.

Abstract
In this study, a novel, strategic method was developed for the synthesis of a mesoporous silica catalyst embedded with ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs/SiO2) by combining the polyol and modified sol-gel methods. By applying this new procedure, uniformly synthesized ruthenium nanoparticles with an average size of 3.8 nm and 95% spherical shape were highly dispersed in the mesoporous silica support material. Coordinated carbonyl groups of PVP remaining from the synthesis of the RuNPs were effectively removed by the thermal treatment (calcined at 573 K for 4 h) and the sythesized RuNPs/SiO2 catalysts were reduced under hydrogen at 20 bar for 2 h. These catalysts were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), N2 adsorption-desorption, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). After the thermal treatment and the reduction procedure, the size and shape of the embedded RuNPs were nearly unchanged, and the catalyst was active in the liquid-phase hydrogenation of succinic anhydride (SAN) to selectively form y-butyrolactone (GBL) with a maximum yield of 90.1%. This novel catalyst preparation is a potentially useful method for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles as heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract
A reaction between imines and anhydrides has been developed with chiral disubstituted anhydrides and chiral imines. The synthesis of highly substituted γ-lactams with three stereogenic centers, including one quaternary center, proceeds at room temperature in high yield and with high diastereoselectivity in most cases. Enantiomerically pure alkyl-substituted anhydrides proceed with no epimerization, thus providing access to enantiomerically pure penta-substituted lactam products.

Abstract
Computations (SCS-MP2//B3LYP) reveal that the asymmetric synthesis of highly substituted γ-lactams with three stereogenic centers, including one quaternary center, proceeds through a Mannich reaction between the enol form of the anhydride and the E-imine, followed by a transannular acylation. This new mechanistic picture accounts for both the observed reactivity and stereoselectivity. CH-O and hydrogen bonding interactions in the Mannich step and torsional steering effects in the acylation step are responsible for stereocontrol. It is demonstrated that this new mechanistic picture applies to the related reactions of homophthalic anhydrides with imines and presents new vistas for the design of a new reaction to access complex molecular architectures.

Abstract
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted the attention of many researchers due to their remarkable physicochemical features and have been found to be a new family of nanovectors for the delivery of therapeutic molecules. The ability of these nanostructures to load large amounts of drug molecules on their outer surface has been considered as the main advantage by many investigators. Here, we report the development of a PEGylated SWCNT-mediated delivery system for cyclosporin A (CsA) as a potent immunosuppressive agent. The available OH group in the CsA structure was first linked to a bi-functional linker (i.e., succinic anhydride) in order to provide a COOH terminal group. CsA succinylation process was optimized by using the modified simplex method. The resulting compound, CsA-CO-(CH(2))(2)-COOH, was then grafted onto the exterior surface of SWCNTs, previously PEGylated with phospholipid-PEG(5000)-NH(2) conjugates, through the formation of an amide bond with the free amine group of PEGylated SWCNTs. Drug loading, stability of the PEGylated SWCNT-CsA complex, and in vitro release of the drug were evaluated. Loading efficiencies of almost 72% and 68% were achieved by UV spectrophotometry and elemental analysis methods, respectively. It was observed that 57.3% of cyclosporine was released from CsA-Pl-PEG(5000)-SWCNTs after 3 days. In this investigation, we conjugated CsA to an amine-terminated phospholipid-polyethylene glycol chain attached on SWCNTs via a cleavable ester bond and demonstrated the possible potential of PEGylated SWCNT-based systems for CsA delivery.

Abstract
In this study the adsorption of cationic dyes by modified sugarcane bagasse with EDTA dianhydride (EB) was examined using methylene blue (MB) and gentian violet (GV) as model compounds in aqueous single solutions. The synthesized adsorbent (EB) was characterized by FTIR, elemental analysis, and BET. The capacity of EB to adsorb dyes was evaluated at different contact times, pH values, and initial dye concentrations. According to the obtained results, the adsorption processes could be described by a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherms were well fitted by the Langmuir model. Maximum adsorption capacities for MB and GV on EB were found to be 202.43 and 327.83 mg/g, respectively. The free energy change during adsorption of MB and GV was found to be -22.50 and -24.21 kJ/mol, respectively, suggesting that chemisorption is the main mechanism controlling the adsorption process.

Abstract
This study aims to determine whether biosorption can be used for the removal of ionic liquids (ILs), especially their cationic parts, from aqueous media. As a model IL, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM]OAc) was used. Five types of bacterial biosorbents were prepared from fermentation wastes through chemical modification of the bacterial surface. Screening study was performed to compare the cationic [EMIM] biosorption capacity among the bacterial biosorbents, indicating that the succinated Escherichia coli biomass (SB-E) was the best biosorbent for removing [EMIM] cations. The [EMIM] biosorption performance of SB-E was evaluated in detail through various experiments. The optimal pH range for [EMIM] biosorption was from 7 to 10, and biosorption equilibrium was reached within 10 min. The maximum uptake of SB-E was also estimated to be 72.6 mg/g. Abstract
Wood-derived cellulosic fibers prepared in different ways were successfully employed to absorb simulated crude oil, demonstrating their possible use as absorbents in the case of oil spills. When dry fibers were used, the highest sorption capacity (six parts of oil per unit mass of fiber) was shown by bleached softwood kraft fibers, compared to hardwood bleached kraft and softwood chemithermomechanical pulp(CTMP) fibers. Increased refining of CTMP fibers decreased their oil uptake capacity. When the fibers were soaked in water before exposure to the oil, the ability of the unmodified kraft fibers to sorb oil was markedly reduced, whereas the wet CTMP fibers were generally more effective than the wet kraft fibers. Predeposition of lignin onto the surfaces of the bleached kraft fibers improved their ability to take up oil when wet. Superior ability to sorb oil in the wet state was achieved by pretreating the kraft fibers with a hydrophobic sizing agent, alkenylsuccinic anhydride (ASA). Contact angle tests on a model cellulose surface showed that some of the sorption results onto wetted fibers could be attributed to the more hydrophobic nature of the fibers after treatment with either lignin or ASA.

Abstract
Targeted lymphatic delivery of nanoparticles for drug delivery and imaging is primarily dependent on size and charge. Prior studies have observed increased lymphatic uptake and retentions of over 48 h for negatively charged particles compared to neutral and positively charged particles. We have developed new polymeric materials that extend retention over a more pharmaceutically relevant 7-day period. We used whole body fluorescence imaging to observe in mice the lymphatic trafficking of a series of anionic star poly-(6-O-methacryloyl-D-galactose) polymer-NIR dye (IR820) conjugates. The anionic charge of polymers was increased by modifying galactose moieties in the star polymers with succinic anhydride. Increasing anionic nature was associated with enhanced lymphatic uptake up to a zeta potential of ca.-40 mV; further negative charge did not affect lymphatic uptake. Compared to the 20% acid-conjugate, the 40-90% acid-star-polymer conjugates exhibited a 2.5- to 3.5-fold increase in lymphatic uptake in both the popliteal and iliac nodes. The polymer conjugates exhibited node half-lives of 2-20 h in the popliteal nodes and 19-114 h in the deeper iliac nodes. These polymer conjugates can deliver drugs or imaging agents with rapid lymphatic uptake and prolonged deep-nodal retention; thus they may provide a useful vehicle for sustained intralymphatic drug delivery with low toxicity.

Abstract
Pigment particles used in paper coatings are typically of micrometer size and consequently the thickness of the coatings is, even at its lowest, in micrometer scale. Progress in nanotechnology has given way to the development of nanosized materials to be used in coatings, yet their exploitation has not been studied to a great extent. This study examines utilization of nanosized precipitated calcium carbonate (nanoPCC) particles in nanoscale thin coating layers. In contrast to commonly used coatings, a thin nanoparticle-based coating was targeted to change the substrate surface characteristics via controlled surface structure rather than via high coat weight. A novel approach for stabilizing and modifying the nanoPCC particles with pectin and alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) was utilized and a nanoparticle coating with uniform particle distribution was created. The coating applied on paper substrate was hydrophobic, having a water contact angle of 125°. Particle surface modification provided dispersion stability, enabling control of the coating layer structure. The introduced concept provides a new approach to paper coatings utilizing controlled deposition of nanoparticles with extremely low coat weight, yet having high impact on substrate surface properties. Additionally, as paper is an environmentally sound product, the approach to form a controllable nanostructure on a green substrate has potential in applications outside the traditional paper products.

Abstract
Research on chemical modification of pineapple peel fibre with succinic anhydride was carried out to create a novel adsorbent for Cu2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ removal from aqueous solution. After pretreatment with iso-propyl alcohol and NaOH, pineapple peel fibre was modified via reaction with succinic anhydride for introduction of carboxylic functional groups. The modified pineapple peel fibre was characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and evaluated for its adsorptive ability for Cu2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ from synthetic metal solutions. The FTIR analysis proved the introduction of carboxylic functional groups in the backbone of the modified pineapple peel fibre. The modified pineapple peel fibre showed higher adsorptive capacity for Cu2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ compared with raw pineapple peel and pineapple peel fibre pretreated with iso-propyl alcohol. The adsorption of Cu2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ on the modified pineapple peel fibre depended on solution pH value, adsorption time and initial metal concentration. The maximum adsorption capacities of the modified fibre were observed at pH 5.4 for Cu2+ (27.68 +/- 0.83 mg g(-1) or 0.44 mmol g(-1)), at pH 7.5 for Cd2+ (34.18 +/- 1.02 mg g(-1) or 0.30 mmol g(-1)) and at pH 5.6 for Pb2+ (70.29 +/- 2.11 mg g(-1) or 0.34 mmol g(-1)) respectively. The adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the experimental data coincided well with the Langmuir model.
