Abstract
In this review, we propose that the social dynamics of founder populations in novel and newly available environments can have critical effects in shaping species' sociality and can produce long-lasting changes in social structure and behavior. For founder populations which expand into an underexploited niche separated from the parent population, the necessity of bond formation with strangers, lack of clear territories, and initial abundance of resources can lead to altered initial social dynamics to which subsequent generations adapt. We call this the founder sociality hypothesis. After specifying the theoretical reasoning and mechanism of effect, we focus on three particular cases where the social dynamics of founder populations may have a central role in explaining their modern behavioral ecology. In particular, we develop and review evidence for three predictions of the founder sociality hypothesis in territorial, mixed-sex group forming species: relatively stronger social bonds in the dispersing sex with relatively weaker bonds in the nondispersing sex, reduced territoriality, and increased social tolerance. We briefly touch on the implications for human evolution given our species' evolutionary history marked by frequent expansion and adaptation to novel environments. We conclude by proposing several experiments and models with testable predictions following from the founder sociality hypothesis.

Abstract
AIM To develop the nursing practice environment scale in home health care (NPES-HHC), which measures the attractiveness of nursing practice environments in Japan. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS The answers of 1,050 mail surveys conducted for nurses at 421 home-visit nursing agencies in Japan were analysed. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of the NPES-HHC's candidate items were performed. Relationships between the newly developed NPES-HHC and participants' intention to remain at the workplace, job satisfaction and quality of care were also tested. RESULTS A seven-dimensional model with 37 items was obtained by exploratory factor analysis (Cronbach's alpha: 0.77-0.92). Confirmatory factor analysis supported this model. NPES-HHC scores had significant positive relations with participants' intention to remain at the workplace, job satisfaction and quality of care (p < .01). The NPES-HHC is a reliable and valid instrument to assess the attractiveness of the practice environment for home-visit nursing agencies.

Abstract
Changes in the subcellular localisation of chloroplasts help optimise photosynthetic activity under different environmental conditions. In many plants, this movement is mediated by the blue-light photoreceptor phototropin. A model organism with simple phototropin signalling that allows clear observation of chloroplasts would facilitate the study of chloroplast relocation movement. Here, we examined this process in the simple thalloid liverwort Apopellia endiviifolia. Transverse sections of the thallus tissue showed uniformly developed chloroplasts and no air chambers; these characteristics enable clear observation of chloroplasts and analysis of their movements under a fluorescence stereomicroscope. At 22°C, the chloroplasts moved to the anticlinal walls of cells next to the neighbouring cells in the dark (dark-positioning response), whereas they moved towards weak light (accumulation response) and away from strong light (avoidance response). When the temperature was reduced to 5°C, the chloroplasts moved away from weak light (cold-avoidance response). Hence, both light- and temperature-dependent chloroplast relocation movements occur in A. endiviifolia. Notably, the accumulation, avoidance and cold-avoidance responses were induced under blue-light but not under red-light. These results suggest that phototropin is responsible for chloroplast relocation movement in A. endiviifolia and that the characteristics are similar to those in the model liverwort Marchantia polymorpha. RNA sequencing and Southern blot analysis identified a single copy of the PHOTOTROPIN gene in A. endiviifolia, indicating that a simple phototropin signalling pathway functions in A. endiviifolia. We conclude that A. endiviifolia has great potential as a model system for elucidating the mechanisms of chloroplast relocation movement.

Abstract
The cortical plate (CP) first appears at seven postconceptional weeks (pcw), when it splits the preexisting preplate into two layers, the marginal zone and the presubplate (pSP). Although three-dimensional (3D) analysis using fetal magnetic resonance imaging and two-dimensional tissue observations have been reported, there have been no studies analyzing the early development of the layer structure corresponding to the pSP stage in 3D. Here, we reconstructed 3-D models of the brain with a focus on the cortical layers in pSP stage. To achieve this, we digitized serial tissue sections of embryos between CS20 and CS23 from the Kyoto Collection (n = 7, approximately 7-8.5 pcw), and specimens at early fetal phase from the Blechschmidt Collection (n = 2, approximately 9.5-12 pcw, crown rump length [CRL] 39 and 64 mm). We observed tissue sections and 3D images and performed quantitative analysis of the thickness, surface area, and volume. Because the boundary between pSP and the intermediate zone (IZ) could not be distinguished in hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections, the two layers were analyzed together as a single layer in this study. The histology of the layers was observed from CS21 and became distinct at CS22. Subsequently, we observed the 3-D models; pSP-IZ was present in a midlateral region of the cerebral wall at CS21, and an expansion centered around this region was observed after CS22. We observed it over the entire cerebral hemisphere at early fetal phase (CRL 39 mm). The thickness of pSP-IZ was visible in 3D and was greater in the midlateral region. At the end of the pSP stage (CRL 64 mm), the thick region expanded to lateral, superior, and posterior regions around the primordium of the insula. While, the region near the basal ganglia was not included in the thickest 10% of the pSP-IZ area. Middle cerebral artery was found in the midlateral region of the cerebral wall, near the area where pSP-IZ was observed. Feature of layer structure growth was revealed by quantitative assessment as thickness, surface area, and volume. The maximum thickness value of pSP-IZ and CP increased significantly according to CRL, whereas the median value increased slightly. The layer structure appeared to grow and spread thin, rather than thickening during early development, which is characteristic during pSP stages. The surface area of the cerebral total tissue, CP, and pSP-IZ increased in proportion to the square of CRL. The surface area of CP and pSP-IZ approached that of the total tissue at the end of the pSP stage. Volume of each layer increased in proportion to the cube of CRL. pSP-IZ and CP constituted over 50% of the total tissue in volume at the end of the pSP stages. We could visualize the growth of pSP-IZ in 3D and quantify it during pSP stage. Our approach allowed us to observe the process of rapid expansion of pSP-IZ from the midlateral regions of the cerebral wall, which subsequently becomes the insula.

Abstract
Molecular mechanisms of progression of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) have been proven with recent genomic or transcriptional analyses. However, it is still difficult to apply these analyses to daily clinical practice owing to economical and practical issues. Here, we established a pathology-based, postoperative prognostic classification based on the well-validated transcriptional classifier, ClearCode34, in ccRCC. A total of 342 cases with available tissue were identified and randomly allocated into a discovery cohort (n = 138) and a validation cohort (n = 204). Levels of mRNA were quantified using a nCounter Digital Analyzer, and the ccA/ccB subtypes were determined. Histological and immunohistochemistry (IHC) analyses were subsequently performed to establish a pathology-based classification based on the mRNA levels. Finally, the prognostic ability of the new classifier was evaluated in both the discovery and validation cohorts. Of 138 cases in the discovery cohort, 78 (56.5%) and 60 (43.5%) were assigned to the ccA and ccB subtypes, respectively. Proangiogenic genes, neuropilin 1 (NRP1) and regulator of G protein signalling 5 (RGS5), were especially overexpressed in all ccRCC samples and were enriched in ccA-assigned tumours. Histologically, tumour necrosis and the sarcomatoid feature were associated with the ccB subtype. In IHC analyses, expression of NRP1, RGS5, and forkhead box M1 (FOXM1), an epithelial-mesenchymal transition-related factor, significantly correlated with the ccA/ccB subtypes. Combining these three IHC factors and tumour necrosis, we developed the IHC/histology-based classifier, which showed good concordance with the ClearCode34 classifier with an accuracy of 0.80. The established classification significantly stratified relapse-free, cancer-specific, and overall survival rates in both the discovery and validation cohorts. The novel molecular pathology classifier integrating NRP1, RGS5, FOXM1, and tumour necrosis may enable the stratification of oncological outcomes for patients with ccRCC undergoing resection surgery.

Abstract
Fatigability is related to several diseases as well as the autonomic nervous system. We investigated whether fatigability is associated with coordination between physical acceleration (PA) and parasympathetic nervous activity (PSNA) in women. Overall, 95 women were divided into non-old (n = 50; age: 22-59 years) and old (n = 45; age: ≥60 years) groups. PSNA and PA data were simultaneously obtained every minute for 24 h. We defined %lag0 as the percent ratio of lag = 0 min between PSNA and PA in 1 h. Cornell Medical Index was used to determine the degrees of physical and psychological symptoms. In the non-older group in the hour before sleep, the participants with high fatigability scores had significantly lower %lag0 than those with low fatigability (p < 0.05). Additionally, those with higher fatigability combined with exhaustion in the morning had significantly lower %lag0 than those without exhaustion in the hour before sleep (p < 0.05) but not in the hour after waking up. These results suggest that fatigability in non-older women was associated with loss of coordination between PSNA and PA in the hour before sleep. Additionally, exhaustion in the morning may be related to loss coordination of PSNA and PA during the previous night.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has been shown that Klotho protects vascular endothelial function. Given that a single bout of resistance-exercise-induced hypertensive stimulus causes endothelial dysfunction, we postulated that acute resistance exercise would reduce serum Klotho levels. In this respect, the reduction in serum Klotho levels would be associated with the response of flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of acute resistance exercise on the Klotho response in serum. In addition, we examined the relationship between the serum Klotho and FMD responses following acute resistance exercise. METHODS Twelve untrained men participated in this study (20.4 ± 0.3 years). Following baseline measurements (blood pressure, blood collection, FMD), subjects performed leg extensions, which consisted of 10 repetitions for five sets at 70% of one-repetition maximum. After the exercise, measurement of blood pressure, blood collection, and FMD assessment were repeated for 60 min. We analyzed Klotho and endothelin-1 (ET-1) concentrations in blood serum. RESULTS As expected, the exercise significantly elevated blood pressure and led to decreased FMD (p < 0.05). However, Klotho concentrations were significantly increased following exercise (p < 0.05). No correlation was observed in Klotho and FMD responses following acute resistance exercise. However, there was a significant positive correlation between Klotho and ET-1 in response to resistance exercise (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION In conclusion, the present study reveals that serum Klotho significantly increased following a single bout of resistance exercise. However, the increase in Klotho may not associate with the acute reduction in endothelial function.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of plyometric training on the muscle-tendon mechanical properties and behavior of fascicles during jumping in order to elucidate the mechanisms of improved jump performance due to plyometric training. Eleven subjects completed a 12-week unilateral training program for plantar flexors. Active muscle stiffness with (100°·s-1 ) and without (250°·s-1 ) stretch reflex were calculated according to changes in muscle force and fascicle length during fast stretching after submaximal isometric contractions. Stiffness and hysteresis of tendon were measured using ultrasonography during ramp and ballistic contractions. Three kinds of unilateral jump heights using only ankle joint (no counter-movement jump: no-CMJ; counter-movement jump: CMJ; drop jump: DJ) on sledge apparatus were measured. During jumping, electromyographic activities (mEMG) of plantar flexors and fascicle length of the medial gastrocnemius muscle were measured. Active muscle stiffness at 250 and 100°·s-1 and maximal tendon elongation during ballistic contraction significantly increased after training. Tendon hysteresis during ballistic contraction significantly decreased after training, whereas that during ramp contraction did not. The heights of three jump tests, the ratio of mEMG during eccentric to that during concentric phases for CMJ, and the amount of fascicle shortening and shortening velocity during eccentric phase of DJ significantly increased after training. These results suggest that an increase in CMJ height was associated with changes in the muscle-tendon mechanical properties and muscle activation strategy, whereas an increase in DJ height could be explained by changes in the muscle-tendon mechanical properties, but not muscle activation strategy.

Abstract
The sediment-water interface of spiked-sediment toxicity tests is a complex exposure system, where multiple uptake pathways exist for benthic organisms. The freely dissolved concentration (Cfree ) in sediment porewater has been proposed as a relevant exposure metric to hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in this system. However, Cfree has rarely been measured in spiked-sediment toxicity tests. We first developed a direct immersion solid-phase microextraction method for measuring Cfree in overlying water and porewater in a sediment test using polydimethylsiloxane-coated glass fibers, resulting in sensitive and repeatable in situ measurements of HOCs. Then, we measured Cfree and total dissolved concentrations (Cdiss ) in the sediment test systems with the freshwater amphipod Hyalella azteca and thoroughly evaluated the temporal and spatial profiles of four HOCs (phenanthrene, pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, and chlorpyrifos). Furthermore, we examined the relationship between the measured concentrations and the lethality of H. azteca. We found that the test system was far from an equilibrium state for all four chemicals tested, where Cdiss in overlying water changed over the test duration and a vertical Cfree gradient existed at the sediment-water interface. In porewater Cdiss was larger than Cfree by a factor of 170 to 220 for benzo[a]pyrene because of the strong binding to dissolved organic carbon. Comparison of the median lethal concentrations of chlorpyrifos in the sediment test and those in water-only tests indicates that Cfree in porewater was the most representative indicator for toxicity of this chemical. The method and findings presented in the present study warrant further research on the chemical transport mechanisms and the actual exposure in sediment tests using different chemicals, sediments, and test species. Abstract
Ecological release is often attributed to the rapid adaptive diversification of phenotypic traits. However, it is not well understood how natural selection changes its strength and direction through the process of ecological release. Herein, we demonstrated how shell colour of the Japanese land snail Euhadra peliomphala simodae has diversified via a shift in natural selection due to ecological release after migration from the mainland to an island. This snail's shell colour diversified on the island due to disruptive selection after migration from the mainland. We used trail camera traps to identify the cause of natural selection on both the mainland and the island. We then conducted a mark-recapture experiment while collecting microhabitat use data. In total, we captured and marked around 1,700 snails on the mainland, some of which were preyed upon by an unknown predator. The trail camera traps showed that the predator is the large Japanese field mouse Apodemus speciosus, and the predatory frequency was higher on the mainland than on the island. However, this predation did not correlate with shell colour. Microhabitat use on the island was more extensive than on the mainland, with snails on the island using both ground and arboreal microhabitats. A Bayesian estimation showed that the stabilizing selection on shell colour came from factors other than predation. Our results suggest that the course of natural selection was modified due to ecological release after migration from the mainland, explaining one cause of the phenotypic diversification.

Abstract
Despite their key phylogenetic position and their unique biology, hornworts have been widely overlooked. Until recently there was no hornwort model species amenable to systematic experimental investigation. Anthoceros agrestis has been proposed as the model species to study hornwort biology. We have developed an Agrobacterium-mediated method for the stable transformation of A. agrestis, a hornwort model species for which a genetic manipulation technique was not yet available. High transformation efficiency was achieved by using thallus tissue grown under low light conditions. We generated a total of 274 transgenic A. agrestis lines expressing the β-glucuronidase (GUS), cyan, green, and yellow fluorescent proteins under control of the CaMV 35S promoter and several endogenous promoters. Nuclear and plasma membrane localization with multiple color fluorescent proteins was also confirmed. The transformation technique described here should pave the way for detailed molecular and genetic studies of hornwort biology, providing much needed insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying symbiosis, carbon-concentrating mechanism, RNA editing and land plant evolution in general.

Abstract
Heart failure is a complex clinical syndrome characterized by insufficient cardiac function. Heart-resident and infiltrated macrophages have been shown to play important roles in the cardiac remodeling that occurs in response to cardiac pressure overload. However, the possible roles of T cells in this process, have not been well characterized. Here we show that T cell depletion conferred late-stage heart protection but induced cardioprotective hypertrophy at an early stage of heart failure caused by cardiac pressure overload. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis revealed that CD8+T cell depletion induced cardioprotective hypertrophy characterized with the expression of mitochondrial genes and growth factor receptor genes. CD8+T cells regulated the conversion of both cardiac-resident macrophages and infiltrated macrophages into cardioprotective macrophages expressing growth factor genes such as Areg, Osm, and Igf1, which have been shown to be essential for the myocardial adaptive response after cardiac pressure overload. Our results demonstrate a dynamic interplay between cardiac CD8+T cells and macrophages that is necessary for adaptation to cardiac stress, highlighting the homeostatic functions of resident and infiltrated macrophages in the heart.

Abstract
Background & Aims Periodontitis increases the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); however, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, we show that gut dysbiosis induced by oral administration of Porphyromonas gingivalis, a representative periodontopathic bacterium, is involved in the aggravation of NAFLD pathology. Methods C57BL/6N mice were administered either vehicle, P. gingivalis, or Prevotella intermedia, another periodontopathic bacterium with weaker periodontal pathogenicity, followed by feeding on a choline-deficient, l-amino acid-defined, high-fat diet with 60 kcal% fat and 0.1% methionine (CDAHFD60). The gut microbial communities were analyzed by pyrosequencing the 16S ribosomal RNA genes. Metagenomic analysis was used to determine the relative abundance of the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways encoded in the gut microbiota. Serum metabolites were analyzed using nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolomics coupled with multivariate statistical analyses. Hepatic gene expression profiles were analyzed via DNA microarray and quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results CDAHFD60 feeding induced hepatic steatosis, and in combination with bacterial administration, it further aggravated NAFLD pathology, thereby increasing fibrosis. Gene expression analysis of liver samples revealed that genes involved in NAFLD pathology were perturbed, and the two bacteria induced distinct expression profiles. This might be due to quantitative and qualitative differences in the influx of bacterial products in the gut because the serum endotoxin levels, compositions of the gut microbiota, and serum metabolite profiles induced by the ingested P. intermedia and P. gingivalis were different. Conclusions Swallowed periodontopathic bacteria aggravate NAFLD pathology, likely due to dysregulation of gene expression by inducing gut dysbiosis and subsequent influx of gut bacteria and/or bacterial products.

Abstract
Enzymes catalyzing [4+2] cycloaddition have attracted increasing attention because of their key roles in natural product biosynthesis. Here, we solved the X-ray crystal structures of a pair of decalin synthases, Fsa2 and Phm7, that catalyze intramolecular [4+2] cycloadditions to form enantiomeric decalin scaffolds during biosynthesis of the HIV-1 integrase inhibitor equisetin and its stereochemical opposite, phomasetin. Computational modeling, using molecular dynamics simulations as well as quantum chemical calculations, demonstrates that the reactions proceed through synergetic conformational constraints assuring transition state-like substrates folds and their stabilization by specific protein-substrate interactions. Site-directed mutagenesis experiments verified the binding models. Intriguingly, the flexibility of bound substrates is largely different in two enzymes, suggesting the distinctive mechanism of dynamics regulation behind these stereoselective reactions. The proposed reaction mechanism herein deepens the basic understanding how these enzymes work but also provides a guiding principle to create artificial enzymes.

Abstract
In response to the novel coronavirus outbreak, the Japanese government requested the temporary closure of businesses. Consequently, complying with restrictions came to be recognized as the social norm, and stores that continued with business as usual were seen as norm-breakers. This study empirically investigates costly punishment behavior for stores' violation of restrictions and how this behavior changes when a decision-maker receives information pertaining to contrasting norms, implicitly requiring the opposite response. By implementing joy-of-destruction minigames, we found that costly punishment behavior for norm-breakers was significantly stimulated (by approximately 11%) but not increased when additional information was provided.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to determine whether there is an association between influenza and new-onset type 1 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS This population-based retrospective cohort study used data from the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Check-ups of Japan. Influenza was defined based on drug prescriptions and the onset of type 1 diabetes was defined using specific medical codes indicating a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. The incidence rate ratio of new-onset type 1 diabetes within 180 days after an influenza diagnosis was calculated and it was compared with that at other times using Poisson regression and generalized estimating equations. Sensitivity analyses were performed to confirm the robustness of this finding. RESULTS The data of 10,400 patients with new-onset type 1 diabetes were analyzed, including 2,196 (952 male 1,244 female) patients diagnosed with influenza between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2017. Although only patients with type 1 diabetes were included, adjusted analysis showed that individuals had a 1.3-fold (95% confidence interval: 1.15-1.46) higher risk of developing type 1 diabetes in the first 180 days after influenza diagnosis than that at other times. CONCLUSIONS In this Japanese population-based cohort, the risk of new-onset type 1 diabetes may increase after the diagnosis of influenza. These results, which must be confirmed in other populations, suggest that influenza may be a causal factor for new-onset type 1 diabetes. The molecular mechanisms underlying the potential etiological relationship between influenza and type 1 diabetes should be elucidated.

Abstract
The development of solventless system for modulating properties of network materials is imperative for the next generation sustainable technology. Utilization of photostimulation is important owing to its spatial and temporal locality, yet designing photoresponsive network materials exhibiting repeatable and dramatic change in their properties remains a challenge. Here, the authors report a photocleavable regenerative network (PRN) linked with photoresponsive hexaarylbiimidazoles (HABIs) synthesized from narrow dispersity star-shaped poly(dimethylsiloxane)s (PDMSs) having 2,4,5-triphenylimidazole end groups. The use of urea anion as a catalyst for ring opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic siloxane initiated from silanols enables control of molecular weight and dispersity. The rheological measurements for the synthesized PRNs exhibit drastic changes in storage and loss moduli (G' and G″) upon photoirradiation in the solid state (G' > G″). This photocontrolled change in viscoelasticity with retaining solidity enables application of PRNs as a remotely-controlled photo-melt adhesive and photo-scissible string. The developed PRNs will enable a wide variety of applications such as industrially important next-generation sustainable adhesive, sealant, and reversibly-deformable 3D printing materials with their spatially and temporally local manipulability, solventless handleability, and excellent reversibility.

Abstract
Although liver-humanized animals are desirable tools for drug development and expansion of human hepatocytes in large quantities, their development is restricted to mice. In animals larger than mice, a precondition for efficient liver humanization remains preliminary because of different xeno-repopulation kinetics in livers of larger sizes. Since rats are ten times larger than mice and widely used in pharmacological studies, liver-humanized rats are more preferable. Here, Fah-/- Rag2-/- IL2rg-/- (FRG) rats are generated by CRISPR/Cas9, showing accelerated liver failure and lagged liver xeno-repopulation compared to FRG mice. A survival-assured liver injury preconditioning (SALIC) protocol, which consists of retrorsine pretreatment and cycling 2-(2-nitro-4-trifluoromethylbenzoyl)-1,3-cyclohexanedione (NTBC) administration by defined concentrations and time intervals, is developed to reduce the mortality of FRG rats and induce a regenerative microenvironment for xeno-repopulation. Human hepatocyte repopulation is boosted to 31 ± 4% in rat livers at 7 months after transplantation, equivalent to approximately a 1200-fold expansion. Human liver features of transcriptome and zonation are reproduced in humanized rats. Remarkably, they provide sufficient samples for the pharmacokinetic profiling of human-specific metabolites. This model is thus preferred for pharmacological studies and human hepatocyte production. SALIC may also be informative to hepatocyte transplantation in other large-sized species.

Abstract
Aerosols emitted in densely populated and industrialized Indo-Gangetic Plain, one of the most polluted regions in the world, modulate regional climate, monsoon, and Himalayan glacier retreat. Thus, this region is important for understanding aerosol perturbations and their resulting impacts on atmospheric changes during COVID-19 lockdown period, a natural experimental condition created by the pandemic. By analyzing 5 years (2016-2020) data of aerosols and performing a radiative transfer calculation, we found that columnar and near-surface aerosol loadings decreased, leading to reductions in radiative cooling at the surface and top of the atmosphere and atmospheric warming during lockdown period. Further, satellite data analyses showed increases in cloud optical thickness and cloud-particle effective radius and decrease in lower tropospheric air temperature during lockdown period. These results indicate critical influences of COVID-19 lockdown on regional climate and water cycle over Indo-Gangetic Plain, emphasizing need for further studies from modeling perspectives.

Abstract
Ongoing global warming increases the frequency and severity of tropical typhoons and prolonged drought, leading to forest degradation. Simultaneous and/or successive masting events and climatic extremes may thus occur frequently in the near future. If these climatic extremes occur immediately after mass seed reproduction, their effects on individual trees are expected to be very severe because mass reproduction decreases carbohydrate reserves. While the effects of either a single climate extreme or masting alone on tree resilience/growth have received past research attention, understanding the cumulative effects of such multiple events remains challenging and is crucial for predicting future forest changes. Here, we report tree hazards compound by two successive climate extremes, a tropical typhoon and prolonged drought, after mass reproduction in an endemic tree species (Distylium lepidotum Nakai) on oceanic islands. Across individual trees, the starch stored within the sapwood of branchlets significantly decreased with reproductive efforts (fruit mass/shoot mass ratio). Typhoon damage significantly decreased not only the total leaf area of apical shoots but also the maximum photosynthetic rates. During the 5-month period after the typhoon, the mortality of large branchlets (8-10-mm diameter) increased with decreasing stored starch when the typhoon hit. During the prolonged summer drought in the next year, the recovery of total leaf area, stored starch, and hydraulic conductivity was negatively correlated with the stored starch at the typhoon. These data indicate that the level of stored starch within branchlets is the driving factor determining tree regrowth or dieback, and the restoration of carbohydrates after mass reproduction is synergistically delayed by such climate extremes. Stored carbohydrates are the major cumulative factor affecting individual tree resilience, resulting in their historical effects. Because of highly variable carbohydrate levels among individual trees, the resultant impacts of such successive events on forest dieback will be fundamentally different among trees.

Abstract
Genetic stock identification (GSI) is a major management tool of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus Spp.) that has provided rich genetic baseline data of allozymes, microsatellites, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across the Pacific Rim. Here, we analyzed published data sets for adult chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), namely 10 microsatellites, 53 SNPs, and a mitochondrial DNA locus (mtDNA3, control region, and NADH-3 combined) in samples from 495 locations in the same distribution range (n = 61,813). TreeMix analysis of the microsatellite loci identified the greatest convergence toward Japanese/Korean populations and suggested two admixture events from Japan/Korea to Russia and the Alaskan Peninsula. The SNPs had been purposively collected from rapidly evolving genes to increase the power of GSI. The largest expected heterozygosity was observed in Japanese/Korean populations for microsatellites, whereas it was largest in Western Alaskan populations for SNPs, reflecting the SNP discovery process. A regression of SNP population structures on those of microsatellites indicated the selection of the SNP loci according to deviations from the predicted structures. Specifically, we matched the sampling locations of the SNPs with those of the microsatellites and performed regression analyses of SNP allele frequencies on a 2-dimensional scaling (MDS) of matched locations obtained from microsatellite pairwise F ST values. The MDS first axis indicated a latitudinal cline in American and Russian populations, whereas the second axis showed differentiation of Japanese/Korean populations. The top five outlier SNPs included mtDNA3, U502241 (unknown), GnRH373, ras1362, and TCP178, which were identified by principal component analysis. We summarized the functions of 53 nuclear genes surrounding SNPs and the mtDNA3 locus by referring to a gene database system and propose how they may influence the fitness of chum salmon.

Abstract
Countershading, characterized by a darker dorsal surface and lighter ventral surface, is common among many animals. This dorsoventral pigment polarity is often thought to be adaptive coloration for camouflage. By contrast, noncountershaded (melanistic) morphs often occur within a species due to genetic color polymorphism in terrestrial animals. However, the polymorphism with either countershaded or melanistic morphs is poorly known in wild aquatic animals. This study explored the genetic nature of diverged color morphs of a lineage of gudgeon fish (genus Sarcocheilichthys) in the ancient Lake Biwa and propose this system as a novel model for testing hypotheses of functional aspects of countershading and its loss in aquatic environments. This system harbors two color morphs that have been treated taxonomically as separate species; Sarcocheilichthys variegatus microoculus which occurs throughout the littoral zone and Sarcocheilichthys biwaensis which occurs in and around rocky areas. First, we confirmed that the divergence of dorsoventral color patterns between the two morphs is under strict genetic control at the levels of chromatophore distribution and melanin-related gene expression under common garden rearing. The former morph displayed sharp countershading coloration, whereas the latter morph exhibited a strong tendency toward its loss. The crossing results indicated that this divergence was likely controlled by a single locus in a two-allele Mendelian inheritance pattern. Furthermore, our population genomic and genome-wide association study analyses detected no genome-wide divergence between the two morphs, except for one region near a locus that may be associated with the color divergence. Thus, these morphs are either in a state of intraspecific color polymorphism or two incipient species. Evolutionary forces underlying this polymorphism appear to be associated with heterogeneous littoral environments in this lake. Future ecological genomic research will provide insight into adaptive functions of this widespread coloration, including the eco-evolutionary drivers of its loss, in the aquatic world.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sperm function tests do not adequately assess fertilization potential, and new indices are required. We have previously reported that human testis-specific actin capping proteins may be involved in both sperm morphology and function. This study aimed to determine whether testis-specific actin capping proteins can be a predictive marker of IVF success. METHODS Ninety-seven infertile couples who underwent IVF at an infertility clinic were included. Sperm were immunohistochemically stained to evaluate capping protein expression, and the percentage of sperms with normal staining was calculated. The relationship between actin capping protein expression and IVF outcomes was examined. RESULTS The couples were divided into four groups according to the percentage of normally expressing actin capping protein as follows: ≥90% Group Ⅰ, 80%-90% Group Ⅱ, 70%-80% Group Ⅲ, and <70% Group Ⅳ. Multiple regression analysis showed a significant trend in fertilization rates across the 4 groups (p for trend =0.008).There was no significant trend in pregnancy rates (p for trend =0.276). CONCLUSION The human testis-specific actin capping protein may be a marker of male contributing factors that predict IVF outcomes.

Abstract
Heterozygous RFX6 mutation has emerged as a potential cause of maturity-onset diabetes mellitus of the young (MODY). A 16-year-old female was diagnosed with diabetes by her family doctor and was referred to our institution for genetic examination. Genetic testing revealed a novel RFX6 heterozygous mutation (NM_173560: exon17: c.1954C>T: p.R652X) in the patient and in her mother and brother. She had no islet-specific autoantibodies and showed a reduced meal-induced response of insulin, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, and glucagon-like peptide-1, which is consistent with the phenotype of MODY due to heterozygous RFX6 mutation. In conclusion, we report a case of MODY due to a novel heterozygous mutation, p.R652X.

Abstract
PURPOSE Does the OPtimization of Thyroid function, Thrombophilia, Immunity, and Uterine Milieu (OPTIMUM) treatment strategy, developed for treating repeated implantation failure (RIF), contribute to improving pregnancy outcomes in patients with a history of recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL)? METHODS Between 2018 and 2019, women with RPL after two or more clinical pregnancy losses underwent RPL testing. We treated chronic endometritis with antibiotics, high Th1/Th2 cell ratios with vitamin D and/or tacrolimus, overt/subclinical hypothyroidism with levothyroxine, and thrombophilia with low-dose aspirin. Of 168 consecutive women aged ≤43 years, 115 underwent RPL testing. We compared 100 pregnancies (90 women) and 46 pregnancies (41 women) with and without the OPTIMUM treatment strategy, respectively. RESULTS RPL testing identified intrauterine abnormalities in 66 (57.4%), elevated Th1/Th2 cell ratios in 50 (43.5%), thyroid dysfunction in 33 (28.7%), and thrombophilia in 33 (28.7%). The live birth rate in the OPTIMUM group was significantly higher than that in the control group among women aged <40 years (78.1% and 42.3%, respectively; p = 0.002), but no significant difference was observed in women aged ≥40 years (55.6% and 30.0%, respectively; p = 0.09). CONCLUSIONS The OPTIMUM treatment strategy improved pregnancy outcomes in patients with not only RIF but also RPL.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the consistency between results of preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy performed on trophectoderm (TE) cells and remaining blastocyst cells. METHODS TE biopsy was performed on 29 surplus cryopreserved human blastocysts. Biopsy samples and remaining blastocysts were processed using the VeriSeq PGS kit, and chromosomal statuses were compared by next-generation sequencing. RESULTS Discordance was observed in the chromosomal status of 11 out of 29 blastocysts between the biopsied TE and remaining blastocysts. Concordance was observed in 11 of 12 blastocysts classified as euploid by TE biopsy and in 7 of 17 blastocysts classified as aneuploid. There was 100% concordance (7/7) in cases diagnosed as aneuploid with no mosaicism by TE biopsy. However, discordance was observed in all 10 cases showing mosaicism or partial chromosomal abnormality. CONCLUSION Chromosomal status analysis based on TE biopsy does not accurately reflect the chromosomal status of the whole blastocyst. The chromosomal status is usually the same between the TE and remaining blastocyst cells in cases diagnosed as euploid or aneuploid with no mosaicism. However, mosaic blastocysts and those with other types of structural rearrangements have a higher risk of inconsistency, warranting caution during embryo selection.

Abstract
The opioid receptors play important roles in the regulation of sense and emotions. Although it is recently revealed that opioid receptors are also expressed in various cells, but not restricted in the central nervous system, the effects of opioids on peripheral immune cells are largely unknown. In the current study, we evaluated the effect of opioids on immune system by using selective agonists for δ opioid receptor. Systemic administration of KNT-127 or intraperitoneal injection of YNT-2715 (a KNT-127-related compound that cannot pass through the blood-brain barrier) significantly alleviated the pathology of dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis. In KNT-127-treated mice, the levels of an inflammatory cytokine IL-6 in the serum, and macrophages in the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) were decreased in the progression stage, and those of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the MLN were increased in the recovery stage. In vitro experiments revealed that KNT-127 inhibited the release of IL-6 and another inflammatory cytokine TNF-α from macrophages and accelerated the development of Tregs. Our study suggests that δ opioid agonists act directly on immune cells to improve the pathology of the colitis and can be candidates of immunomodulatory drugs.

Abstract
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi provide plants with soil mineral nutrients, particularly phosphorus. In this symbiotic association, the arbuscular interface is the main site for nutrient exchange. To understand phosphorus transfer at the interface, we analyzed the subcellular localization of polyphosphate (polyP) in mature arbuscules of Rhizophagus irregularis colonizing roots of Lotus japonicus wild-type (WT) and H+-ATPase ha1-1 mutant, which is defective in phosphorus acquisition through the mycorrhizal pathway. In both, the WT and the ha1-1 mutant, polyP accumulated in the cell walls of trunk hyphae and inside fine branch modules close to the trunk hyphae. However, many fine branches lacked polyP. In the mutant, most fine branch modules showed polyP signals compared to the WT. Notably, polyP was also observed in the cell walls of some fine branches formed in the ha1-1 mutant, indicating phosphorus release from fungal cells to the apoplastic regions. Intense acid phosphatase (ACP) activity was detected in the periarbuscular spaces around the fine branches. Furthermore, double staining of ACP activity and polyP revealed that these had contrasting distribution patterns in arbuscules. These observations suggest that polyP in fungal cell walls and apoplastic phosphatases may play an important role in phosphorus transfer at the symbiotic interface in arbuscules.

Abstract
Novel electron donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) compounds comprising dibenzo[a,j]phenazine as the central acceptor core and two 7-membered diarylamines (iminodibenzyl and iminostilbene) as the donors have been designed and synthesized. Investigation of their physicochemical properties revealed the impact of C2 insertion into well-known carbazole electron donors on the properties of previously reported twisted dibenzo[a,j]phenazine-core D-A-D triads. Slight structural modification caused a drastic change in conformational preference, allowing unique photophysical behavior of dual emission derived from room-temperature phosphorescence and triplet-triplet annihilation. Furthermore, electrochemical analysis suggested sigma-dimer formation and electrochemical polymerization on the electrode. Quantum chemical calculations also rationalized the experimental results.

Abstract
Structural changes at the active site of an enzyme induced by binding to a substrate molecule can result in enhanced activity in biological systems. Herein, we report that the new hybrid ultramicroporous material sql-SIFSIX-bpe-Zn exhibits an induced fit binding mechanism when exposed to acetylene, C2 H2 . The resulting phase change affords exceptionally strong C2 H2 binding that in turn enables highly selective C2 H2 /C2 H4 and C2 H2 /CO2 separation demonstrated by dynamic breakthrough experiments. sql-SIFSIX-bpe-Zn was observed to exhibit at least four phases: as-synthesised (α); activated (β); and C2 H2 induced phases (β' and γ). sql-SIFSIX-bpe-Zn-β exhibited strong affinity for C2 H2 at ambient conditions as demonstrated by benchmark isosteric heat of adsorption (Qst ) of 67.5 kJ mol-1 validated through in situ pressure gradient differential scanning calorimetry (PG-DSC). Further, in situ characterisation and DFT calculations provide insight into the mechanism of the C2 H2 induced fit transformation, binding positions and the nature of host-guest and guest-guest interactions.

Abstract
Myosin, the most abundant myofibrillar protein in skeletal muscle, functions as a motor protein in muscle contraction. Myosin polymerizes into the thick filaments in the sarcomere where approximately 50% of embryonic myosin (Myh3) are replaced within 3 h (Ojima K, Ichimura E, Yasukawa Y, Wakamatsu J, Nishimura T, Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 309: C669-C679, 2015). The sarcomere structure including the thick filament is maintained by a balance between protein biosynthesis and degradation. However, the involvement of a protein degradation system in the myosin replacement process remains unclear. Here, we show that the muscle-specific ubiquitin ligase Ozz regulates replacement rate of Myh3. To examine the direct effect of Ozz on myosin replacement, eGFP-Myh3 replacement rate was measured in myotubes overexpressing Ozz by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. Ozz overexpression significantly decreased the replacement rate of eGFP-Myh3 in the myofibrils, whereas it had no effect on other myosin isoforms. It is likely that ectopic Ozz promoted myosin degradation through increment of ubiquitinated myosin, and decreased myosin supply for replacement, thereby reducing myosin replacement rate. Intriguingly, treatment with a proteasome inhibitor MG132 also decreased myosin replacement rate, although MG132 enhanced the accumulation of ubiquitinated myosin in the cytosol where replaceable myosin is pooled, suggesting that ubiquitinated myosin is not replaced by myosin in the myofibril. Collectively, our findings showed that Myh3 replacement rate was reduced in the presence of overexpressed Ozz probably through enhanced ubiquitination and degradation of Myh3 by Ozz.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION This study examined the effect of daily walking steps on glycated hemoglobin, body mass index (BMI) and body composition while taking into consideration sedentary time (ST) in Japanese type 2 diabetes patients over a period of 12 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS Self-administered ST values and information regarding daily walking steps were obtained and analyzed for 236 patients with type 2 diabetes who regularly visited the outpatient clinic. The patients - divided into three categories of daily walking steps: non-step counter user, <7,500 daily walking steps and ≥7,500 daily walking steps (HS) - were prospectively observed considering ST through the monitoring of glycated hemoglobin, BMI waist circumference (WC) and visceral fat accumulation (VFA) for 12 months. RESULTS After 12 months, the participants categorized as the HS group had significantly reduced BMI and VFA independent of ST, as well as significantly reduced WC with high ST. WC and VFA disparities widened significantly at 12 months between the participants categorized as being in the non-step counter user group and the HS group with long ST. However, no difference in glycated hemoglobin levels and BMI were found among the three categories independent of ST. Compared with non-step counter users, the odds ratios with logistic regression models of improvement in BMI and VFA in the <7,500 daily walking steps and HS groups, and WC in the HS group after 12 months were significantly higher only among those with long ST. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that consideration of sedentary behavior in combination with daily walking steps might be essential for type 2 diabetes management.

Abstract
Macrophages are generally thought to play a key role in the pathogenesis of aseptic loosening through initiating periprosthetic inflammation and pathological bone resorption. The aim of this study was to identify macrophage-derived factors that promote osteoclast differentiation and periprosthetic bone destruction. To achieve this, we examined the effects of 12 macrophage-derived factors that were identified by RNA-seq analysis of stimulated macrophages on osteoclast differentiation. Surprisingly, thymidine phosphorylase (TYMP) was found to trigger significant number of osteoclasts that exhibited resorbing activities on dentine slices. Functionally, TYMP knockdown reduced the number of osteoclasts in macrophages that had been stimulated with polyethylene debris. TYMP were detected in serum and synovial tissues of patients that had been diagnosed with aseptic loosening. Moreover, the administration of TYMP onto calvariae of mice induced pathological bone resorption that was accompanied by an excessive infiltration of inflammatory cells and osteoclasts. The RNA-seq for TYMP-induced-osteoclasts was then performed in an effort to understand action mode of TYMP. TYMP stimulation appeared to activate the tyrosine kinase FYN signaling associated with osteoclast formation. Oral administration of saracatinib, a FYN kinase inhibitor, significantly suppressed formation of bone osteolytic lesions in a polyethylene debris-induced osteolysis model. Our findings highlight a novel molecular target for therapeutic intervention in periprosthetic osteolysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little research is available regarding the treatments combining surgical resection with systemic chemotherapy for advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm patients. We retrospectively elucidated whether sunitinib administration before surgery in advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (Pan-NEN) patients increases survival. METHODS This study included 106 of 326 Pan-NEN patients with distant metastases and/or unresectable locally advanced tumors who visited our department to receive sunitinib for more than 1 mo during April 2002 to December 2019. Risk factors for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were analyzed. RESULTS The median duration of preoperative sunitinib administration and observation time after sunitinib were 6 and 26.5 mo, respectively. Of 106 patients, 31 (29.2%) underwent surgery following sunitinib administration. Hepatectomy, synchronous hepatopancreatectomy, pancreatectomy, and lymphadenectomy were performed for 13, 12, 5, and 1 patient, respectively. The 5-y OS rates in the resected and nonresected groups were 88.9% and 14.1%, respectively (P < .001). In the multivariate analysis, the absence of surgical resection following sunitinib (hazard ratio [HR], 13.1; P = .001), poor differentiation (HR, 5.5; P = .007), and bilateral liver metastases (HR, 3.7; P = .048) were independent risk factors for OS, although large liver tumor volumes were more evident in the nonresected group, as patient characteristics. The median DFS was 16.1 mo in 22 patients who underwent R0/1 resections, and risk factors for postoperative recurrence were Ki-67 index >7.8% (HR, 7.4; P = .02) and R1 resection (HR, 4.4; P = .04). CONCLUSION Surgical resection after sunitinib administration improved OS in advanced Pan-NENs.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION Fragmented QRS (fQRS) on electrocardiography is a marker of myocardial fibrosis and myocardial scar formation. This study aimed to clarify the relationship of fQRS with diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Japanese patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Approximately 702 individuals who had a routine health checkup at the Hokuriku Health Service Association (Toyama, Japan) in October 2014 were enrolled and categorized into one of the following four groups based on MetS and diabetes mellitus status: with diabetes mellitus (+) MetS+ (164 participants); diabetes mellitus+ without MetS (Mets-; 103 participants); diabetes mellitus- MetS+ (133 participants); and diabetes mellitus- MetS- (302 participants). fQRS was assessed using the results of electrocardiography. RESULTS The prevalence of fQRS was statistically higher in patients with diabetes mellitus+ MetS+ (37%) and diabetes mellitus+ MetS- (35%), than those with diabetes mellitus- MetS+ (14%) or diabetes mellitus- MetS- (10%; P < 0.0001). Significant differences were observed between the fQRS(+) and fQRS(-) groups for age, sex, waist circumference, heart rate, hypertension, hemoglobin A1c, total cholesterol, MetS and diabetes mellitus. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for traditional risk factors and diabetes mellitus was 0.72 (P = 0.0007, 95% confidence interval 0.67-0.76), and for traditional risk factors and MetS it was 0.67 (P = 0.28, 95% confidence interval 0.62-0.72). Patients with diabetes mellitus had more than threefold higher likelihood of showing fQRS (odds ratio 3.41; 95% confidence interval 2.25-5.22; P < 0.0001) compared with the reference group without diabetes mellitus, after adjusting for age, sex, dyslipidemia, hypertension and waist circumference. CONCLUSIONS fQRS was observed more frequently in diabetes mellitus patients than in MetS and control individuals. Diabetes mellitus was the most significant determinant for fQRS among MetS and other traditional metabolic risk factors.

Abstract
Tissue-clearing technology is an emerging imaging technique currently utilized not only in neuroscience research but also in cancer research. In our previous reports, tissue-clearing methods were used for the detection of metastatic tumors. Here, we showed that the cell cycles of primary and metastatic tumors were visualized by tissue-clearing methods using a reporter system. First, we established cancer cell lines stably expressing fluorescent ubiquitination-based cell cycle indicator (Fucci) reporter with widely used cancer cell lines A549 and 4T1. Fluorescence patterns of the Fucci reporter were investigated in various tumor inoculation models in mice. Interestingly, fluorescence patterns of the Fucci reporter of tumor colonies were different between various organs, and even among colonies in the same organs. The effects of antitumor drugs were also evaluated using these Fucci reporter cells. Of the three antitumor drugs studied, 5-fluorouracil treatment on 4T1-Fucci cells resulted in characteristic fluorescent patterns by the induction of G2 /M arrest both in vitro and in vivo. Thus, the combination of a tissue-clearing method with the Fucci reporter is useful for analyzing the mechanisms of cancer metastasis and drug resistance.

Abstract
We analyzed edible potato starch and observed the interaction between its granular structure and water molecules. We studied the changes caused by gelatinization during heating and stirring using microscopy, micro-FT-IR spectroscopy, and X-ray scattering techniques. A wide range of spatial scales was revealed using these various techniques. The rate of gelatinization varied significantly and was dependent on the starch concentration. The process of adsorption of water on starch molecules was studied using the humidity-controlled FT-IR spectroscopy technique. Furthermore, by comparing the X-ray scattering profiles of dry and wet granules, the 9-nm repeat "cluster" structure was studied. A gradual collapse of the granules occurred during the processes of heating and stirring. A clustered smectic structure and a smectic-like structure were observed in the opaque gel after gelatinization. Upon further heating, a transparent gel was obtained after the melting of the cluster.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic threatens human species with mortality rate of roughly 2%. We can hardly predict the time of herd immunity against and end of COVID-19 with or without success of vaccine. One way to overcome the situation is to define what delineates disease severity and serves as a molecular target. The most successful analogy is found in BCR-ABL in chronic myeloid leukemia, which is the golden biomarker, and simultaneously, the most effective molecular target. We hypothesize that S100 calcium-binding protein A8 (S100A8) is one such molecule. The underlying evidence includes accumulating clinical information that S100A8 is upregulated in severe forms of COVID-19, pathological similarities of the affected lungs between COVID-19 and S100A8-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) model, homeostatic inflammation theory in which S100A8 is an endogenous ligand for endotoxin sensor Toll-like receptor 4/Myeloid differentiation protein-2 (TLR4/MD-2) and mediates hyper-inflammation even after elimination of endotoxin-producing extrinsic pathogens, analogous findings between COVID-19-associated ARDS and pre-metastatic lungs such as S100A8 upregulation, pulmonary recruitment of myeloid cells, increased vascular permeability, and activation coagulation cascade. A successful treatment in an animal COVID-19 model is given with a reagent capable of abrogating interaction between S100A8/S100A9 and TLR4. In this paper, we try to verify our hypothesis that S100A8 governs COVID-19-associated ARDS.

Abstract
Although several studies have shown that release of water channel proteins, aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and AQP2 in urinary extracellular vesicles (uEV-AQP1 and -AQP2), were altered in experimental kidney injury models, their release in human chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been largely unexplored. The aim of the present study was to clarify whether the release of uEV-AQP1 and -AQP2 is altered in patients with CKD. Urine samples were collected from 15 healthy volunteers (normal group) and 62 CKD patients who were categorized into six glomerular filtration rate (GFR) categories (G1, G2, G3a, G3b, G4, and G5) in between 2005 and 2016 at Miyazaki Prefectural Miyazaki Hospital, Japan. uEV-proteins were evaluated by immunoblot analysis. The release of AQP1 and AQP2 were significantly decreased in patients with both CKD G4 and G5, in comparison with the normal group. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) values for AQP1 and AQP2 in patients with CKD G4 and G5 were 0.926 and 0.881, respectively. On the other hand, the AUC values in patients with CKD G1-G3 were 0.512 for AQP1 and 0.680 for AQP2. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that AQP1 and AQP2 in combination were useful for detecting CKD G4 and G5, with a higher AUC value of 0.945. These results suggest that the release of uEV-AQP1 and -AQP2 was decreased in patients with CKD G4 and G5, and these proteins might be helpful to detect advanced CKD.

Abstract
In situations involving fatigue, the increase in fatigue levels and the apparent decrease in motivation levels are thought to suppress mental and physical performance to avoid disrupting homeostasis and aid recovery; however, the ultimate source of information on which the brain depends to perceive fatigue and/or a loss of motivation for protection remains unknown. In this study, we found that, as assessed by magnetoencephalography, electromagnetic cortical neuronal activity while performing cognitive tasks was associated with a decrease in motivation caused by the tasks in healthy participants, suggesting the possibility that the brain utilizes information that reflects the invested amount of neural activity to suppress performance. To our knowledge, this is the first report to provide clues for the missing link between neural investments and the resulting activation of the biological alarms that suppress performance.

Abstract
AIM Psychiatric symptoms are often accompanied by impairments in decision-making to attain rewards and avoid losses. However, due to the complex nature of mental disorders (e.g., high comorbidity), symptoms that are specifically associated with deficits in decision-making remain unidentified. Furthermore, the influence of psychiatric symptoms on computations underpinning reward-seeking and loss-avoidance decision-making remains elusive. Here, we aim to address these issues by leveraging a large-scale online experiment and computational modeling. METHODS In the online experiment, we recruited 1900 non-diagnostic participants from the general population. They performed either a reward-seeking or loss-avoidance decision-making task, and subsequently completed questionnaires about psychiatric symptoms. RESULTS We found that one trans-diagnostic dimension of psychiatric symptoms related to compulsive behavior and intrusive thought (CIT) was negatively correlated with overall decision-making performance in both the reward-seeking and loss-avoidance tasks. A deeper analysis further revealed that, in both tasks, the CIT psychiatric dimension was associated with lower preference for the options that recently led to better outcomes (i.e. reward or no-loss). On the other hand, in the reward-seeking task only, the CIT dimension was associated with lower preference for recently unchosen options. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that psychiatric symptoms influence the two types of decision-making, reward-seeking and loss-avoidance, through both common and distinct computational processes.

Abstract
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein L-like (HNRNPLL), a suppressor of colorectal cancer (CRC) metastasis, is transcriptionally downregulated when CRC cells undergo epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Here we show that decrease of MYB mediates the downregulation of HNRNPLL during EMT. The promoter activity was attributed to a region from -273 to -10 base pairs upstream of the transcription start site identified by 5'-RACE analysis, and the region contained potential binding sites for MYB and SP1. Luciferase reporter gene assays and knockdown or knockout experiments for genes encoding the MYB family proteins, MYB, MYBL1, and MYBL2, revealed that MYB was responsible for approximately half of the promoter activity. On the other hand, treatment with mithramycin A, an inhibitor for SP1 and SP3, suppressed the promoter activity and their additive contribution was confirmed by knockout experiments. The expression level of MYB was reduced on EMT while that of SP1 and SP3 was unchanged, suggesting that the downregulation of HNRNPLL during EMT was mediated by the decrease of MYB expression while SP1 and SP3 determine the basal transcription level of HNRNPLL. Histopathological analysis confirmed the accumulation of MYB-downregulated cancer cells at the invasion front of clinical CRC tissues. These results provide an insight into the molecular mechanism underlying CRC progression.

Abstract
Transition metal hydroxides (M-OH) and their heterostructures (X|M-OH, where X can be a metal, metal oxide, metal chalcogenide, metal phosphide, etc.) have recently emerged as highly active electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of alkaline water electrolysis. Lattice hydroxide anions in metal hydroxides are primarily responsible for observing such an enhanced HER activity in alkali that facilitate water dissociation and assist the first step, the hydrogen adsorption. Unfortunately, their poor electronic conductivity had been an issue of concern that significantly lowered its activity. Interesting advancements were made when heterostructured hydroxide materials with a metallic and or a semiconducting phase were found to overcome this pitfall. However, in the midst of recently evolving metal chalcogenide and phosphide based HER catalysts, significant developments made in the field of metal hydroxides and their heterostructures catalysed alkaline HER and their superiority have unfortunately been given negligible attention. This review, unlike others, begins with the question of why alkaline HER is difficult and will take the reader through evaluation perspectives, trends in metals hydroxides and their heterostructures catalysed HER, an understanding of how alkaline HER works on different interfaces, what must be the research directions of this field in near future, and eventually summarizes why metal hydroxides and their heterostructures are inevitable for energy-efficient alkaline HER.

Abstract
Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) modulates energy metabolism and neuroendocrine stress responses. FGF21 synthesis is increased after environmental or metabolic challenges. Detailed roles of FGF21 in the control of behavioural disturbances under stressful conditions remain to be clarified. Here, we examined the roles of FGF21 in the control of behavioural changes after social defeat stress in male rodents. Central administration of FGF21 increased the number of tyrosine hydroxylase-positive catecholaminergic cells expressing c-Fos protein, an activity marker of neurones, in the nucleus tractus solitarius and area postrema. Double in situ hybridisation showed that some catecholaminergic neurones in the dorsal medulla oblongata expressed β-Klotho, an essential co-receptor for FGF21, in male mice. Social defeat stress increased FGF21 concentrations in the plasma of male mice. FGF21-deficient male mice showed social avoidance in a social avoidance test with C57BL/6J mice (background strain of FGF21-deficient mice) and augmented immobility behaviour in a forced swimming test after social defeat stress. On the other hand, overexpression of FGF21 by adeno-associated virus vectors did not significantly change behaviours either in wild-type male mice or FGF21-deficient male mice. The present data are consistent with the view that endogenous FGF21, possibly during the developmental period, has an inhibitory action on stress-induced depression-like behaviour in male rodents.

Abstract
The main approach for exploring metastable materials is via trial-and-error synthesis, and there is limited understanding of how metastable materials are kinetically stabilized. In this study, a metastable phase superionic conductor, β-Li3 YCl6 , is discovered through in situ X-ray diffraction after heating a mixture of LiCl and YCl3 powders. While Cl- arrangement is represented as a hexagonal close packed structure in both metastable β-Li3 YCl6 synthesized below 600 K and stable α-Li3 YCl6 above 600 K, the arrangement of Li+ and Y3+ in β-Li3 YCl6 determined by neutron diffraction brought about the cell with a 1/√3 a-axis and a similar c-axis of stable α-Li3 YCl6 . Higher Li+ ion conductivity and lower activation energy for Li+ transport are observed in comparison with α-Li3 YCl6 . The computationally calculated low migration barrier of Li+ supports the low activation energy for Li+ conduction, and the calculated high migration barrier of Y3+ kinetically stabilizes this metastable phase by impeding phase transformation to α-Li3 YCl6 . This work shows that the combination of in situ observation of solid-state reactions and computation of the migration energy can facilitate the comprehension of the solid-state reactions allowing kinetic stabilization of metastable materials, and can enable the discovery of new metastable materials in a short time.

Abstract
The small GTPases RalA and RalB are members of the Ras family and activated downstream of Ras. Ral proteins are found in GTP-bound active and GDP-bound inactive forms. The activation process is executed by guanine nucleotide exchange factors, while inactivation is mediated by GTPase-activating proteins (GAPs). RalGAPs are complexes that consist of a catalytic α1 or α2 subunit together with a common β subunit. Several reports implicate the importance of Ral in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). However, there are few reports on the relationship between levels of RalGAP expression and malignancy in PDAC. We generated RalGAPβ-deficient PDAC cells by CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing to investigate how increased Ral activity affects malignant phenotypes of PDAC cells. RalGAPβ-deficient PDAC cells exhibited several-fold higher Ral activity relative to control cells. They had a high migratory and invasive capacity. The RalGAPβ-deficient cells grew more rapidly than control cells when injected subcutaneously into nude mice. When injected into the spleen, the RalGAPβ-deficient cells formed larger splenic tumors with more liver metastases, and unlike controls, they disseminated into the abdominal cavity. These results indicate that RalGAPβ deficiency in PDAC cells contributes to high activities of RalA and RalB, leading to enhanced cell migration and invasion in vitro, and tumor growth and metastasis in vivo.

Abstract
Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) may contribute significantly to overall corrosion risks, especially in the gas and petroleum industries. In this study, we isolated four Prolixibacter strains, which belong to the phylum Bacteroidetes, and examined their nitrate respiration- and Fe0 -corroding activities, together with two previously isolated Prolixibacter strains. Four of the six Prolixibacter strains reduced nitrate under anaerobic conditions, while the other two strains did not. The anaerobic growth of the four nitrate-reducing strains was enhanced by nitrate, which was not observed in the two strains unable to reduce nitrate. When the nitrate-reducing strains were grown anaerobically in the presence of Fe0 or carbon steel, the corrosion of the materials was enhanced by more than 20-fold compared to that in aseptic controls. This enhancement was not observed in cultures of the strains unable to reduce nitrate. The oxidation of Fe0 in the anaerobic cultures of nitrate-reducing strains occurred concomitantly with the formation of nitrite. Since nitrite chemically oxidized Fe0 under anaerobic and aseptic conditions, the corrosion of Fe0 - and carbon steel by the nitrate-reducing Prolixibacter strains was deduced to be mainly enhanced via the biological reduction of nitrate to nitrite, followed by the chemical oxidation of Fe0 to Fe2+ and Fe3+ coupled to the reduction of nitrite.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate how atherosclerosis affects the soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) system in coronary arteries. Rabbits were fed a normal diet for 12 weeks (N group) or a diet containing high cholesterol (1%) for 4 weeks (S-HC group) and 12 weeks (L-HC group). Cholesterol deposition in the intima of coronary arteries was observed in the S-HC group, but the formation of an atherosclerotic plaque was not observed. In contrast, a major plaque developed in the L-HC group. The relaxant response of isolated coronary arteries to sodium nitroprusside (SNP, nitric oxide donor) was not different between the N and S-HC groups, whereas the response in the L-HC group was markedly attenuated. The relaxation induced by BAY 60-2770 (sGC activator) tended to be augmented in the S-HC group, but it was significantly impaired in the L-HC group compared to that in the N group. sGC β1 immunostaining was equally detected in the medial layer of the arteries among the N, S-HC, and L-HC groups. In addition, a strong staining was observed in the plaque region of the L-HC group. cGMP levels in the arteries stimulated with SNP were identical in the N and S-HC groups and slightly lower in the L-HC group than the other groups. BAY 60-2770-stimulated cGMP formation tended to be increased in the S-HC and L-HC groups. These findings suggest that the sGC system was not normal in atherosclerotic coronary arteries. The redox state of sGC and the distribution pattern are likely to change with the progression of atherosclerosis.
