Reference intervals of 24 trace elements in blood, plasma and erythrocytes for the Slovenian adult population

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the present study was to establish the population- and laboratory-specific reference intervals (RIs) for the Slovenian adult population for 24 trace elements (TEs) in blood, plasma and erythrocytes and to evaluate the impact of gender, age, seafood consumption, smoking habits and amalgam fillings on TEs levels.

METHODS

TEs (Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, Se and Mo, Li, Be, V, Cr, Ni, Ga, As, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Sn, Cs, Au, Hg, Tl, Pb and U) were determined in 192 a priori selected blood donors (107 women and 85 men, aged 18-65 years), using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with the Octopole Reaction System. Participants filled out a questionnaire, and RIs were established according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines for TEs.

RESULTS

Uniform RIs for non-essential and gender-specific for essential TEs in blood, plasma and erythrocytes were established. In our population, higher blood and plasma Cu, and erythrocyte Mn levels in women were found. In men, blood Zn, plasma Zn, Mn and Se, and erythrocyte Cu levels were higher. Zn levels were higher in 30-39 years age group. Pb and Sr increased with age. Smoking positively affected Cd, Pb, Cs and Rb; seafood consumption increased As, Hg and Zn; and amalgam increased Hg, Ag and Cu levels.

CONCLUSIONS

Essential TEs were inside recommended levels, and the non-essential ones were far below critical levels. Established RIs will provide an important foundation for clinical diagnostics, safety erythrocyte transfusions assessment, toxicology and epidemiological studies.

The Impact of Inoculation of Two Strains of Rhizobacteria on Radionuclide Transfer in Sesbania Grandiflora

Transfer factors of some naturally-occurring and artificial radionuclides from an agricultural soil to rhizobacteria-treated Sesbania grandiflora, a small leguminous tree, were studied. Two plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains (SCR17 and PCE2) were used to carry out an agricultural experiment in pots in semi-arid region (Syria). The results showed the bacterial strain (SCR17) increased the transfer and accumulation of 238U and 40K in Sesbania grandiflora, while both bacterial strains showed no effect on the accumulation of 234Th, 226Ra, 210Po and 210Pb in the treated plants. The transfer factor of 137Cs from soil to rhizobacteria-treated Sesbania grandiflora was negligible. The values of the transfer factors of 234Th, 226Ra, 210Po and 40K were found to be within the global values, while the values of the transfer factors of 238U and 210Pb were found to be relatively higher. This study highlights the importance of using Phytoremediation by PGPR strains for radionuclides-contaminated soils. Therefore, this method is a promising technique for the restoration and rehabilitation of contaminated sites with radionuclides, as it is low cost, easy to apply, and environmentally friendly.

Anti-aggregation colorimetric sensing of cysteine using silver nanoparticles in the presence of Pb2

Using silver nitrate as the silver source and sodium borohydride as the reducing agent, we synthesized negatively charged silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Subsequently, the AgNPs solution was mixed with positively charged lead ions, resulting in AgNPs aggregation via electrostatic interactions. This led to a color change in the solution from yellow to purple and eventually to blue-green. Our study focused on a colorimetric method that exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity in detecting cysteine using AgNPs-Pb2+ as a sensing probe. Upon the introduction of cysteine to the AgNPs-Pb2+ system, the absorbance of AgNPs increased at 396 nm and decreased at 520 nm. The formation of a complex between cysteine and lead ions prevented the aggregation of silver nanoparticles, enabling the colorimetric detection of cysteine. The relationship between the concentration of ΔA396/A520 and cysteine showed linearity within the range of 0.01 to 0.1 μM; the regression equation of the calibration curve is ΔA396/A520 = 9.0005c - 0.0557 (c: μM), with an R2 value of 0.9997. The detection limit was found to be 3.8 nM (S/N = 3). This method demonstrated exceptional selectivity and sensitivity for cysteine and was effectively used for the determination of cysteine in urine. Our findings offer a new perspective for the future advancement of anti-aggregation silver nanocolorimetry.

Soil pollution indices and health risk assessment of metal(loid)s in the agricultural soil of pistachio orchards

Elevated levels of metal(loid)s in soil may pose potential threats to the ecosystem and can be harmful for human health. The concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, Cr and Ni were determined in agricultural soil collected from 45 pistachio orchards around Feizabad city, Khorasan Razavi province, Iran using ICP-OES. Also, soil pollution indices including contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI) and geo-accumulation index (Igeo) were evaluated. In addition, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk indices were estimated. The mean concentrations of metal(loid)s were in the order of Ni = 466.256 > Cr = 120.848 > Pb = 12.009 > As = 5.486 > Cd = 0.394 mg/kg. Concentrations of As, Cd and Pb in the soil samples were within their respective permissible limits set by World Health Organization (WHO). But concentrations of Cr and Ni in 84.4 and 100% of the samples, respectively exceeded the WHO allowable limits. The CF, PLI and Igeo showed that soil of some of the pistachio orchards was contaminated with some metals. The possible sources of the metals in the soil are application of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, manures as well as irrigation water. Hazard quotient (HQ) ad Hazard index (HI) values from soil of all the orchards were found to be well below the respective threshold limit (1), suggesting that there is no immediate non-cancer threat arising from the contamination at all the orchards with metal(loid)s for children and adults. The highest cancer risk values (1.13E-02 for children and 1.25E-03 for adults) were estimated for Ni in the soil. Collectively, this study provides valuable information to improve the soil in the pistachio orchards to reduce metal(loid)s contamination and minimize the associated health risks to the population in the area.

Assessment of heavy metals level in chicken with indeterminate analysis in localities of Lahore, Pakistan

The poultry industry is a significant source of animal protein, vitamins, and minerals, particularly through the consumption of chicken meat. In order to conduct the study, 100 samples of liver, chicken feed, and drinking water were collected in nearby areas of Lahore. The investigation aims to detect the presence of specific heavy metals in the collected samples. For this purpose, atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) was used to detect heavy metals after proper preparation of the samples. The experimentally observed data were analyzed through a novel statistical approach known as neutrosophic statistics. It was observed that copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and cadmium (Cd) were the most prominent metals detected with contamination above the safe limits (for chicken drinking water (Zn = 23.09±13.67 mg/L, Cu = 3.84±3.04 mg/L, Cd = 0.805±0.645 mg/L, Pb = 0.275±0.095 mg/L, As = 0.982±0.978 mg/L), for chicken feed (Zn = 2.705±0.715 mg/kg, Cu = 1.85±0.53 mg/kg, Cd = 3.065±1.185 mg/kg, Pb = 0.215±0.175 mg/kg, As = 0.68±0.22 mg/kg), and chicken's liver (Zn = 3.93±0.66 mg/kg, Cu = 1.2±0.52 mg/kg, Cd = 0.07±0.05 mg/kg, Pb = 0.805±0.775 mg/kg, As = 1.05±0.8 mg/kg)). Similarly, the statistical analysis leads that the findings emphasize the importance of monitoring and mitigating heavy metal contamination in the poultry industry to ensure the safety and quality of poultry products.

Assessment of bioremediation potential of Calotropis procera and Nerium oleander for sustainable management of vehicular released metals in roadside soils

Land transportation is a major source of heavy metal contamination along the roadside, posing significant risks to human health through inhalation, oral ingestion, and dermal contact. Therefore, this study has been designed to determine the concentrations of vehicular released heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni, and Cu) in roadside soil and leaves of two commonly growing native plant species (Calotropis procera and Nerium oleander).Two busy roads i.e., Lahore-Okara road (N-5) and Okara-Faisalabad roads (OFR) in Punjab, Pakistan, were selected for the study. The data were collected from five sites along each road during four seasons. Control samples were collected ~ 50 m away from road. The metal content i.e. lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) nickel (Ni) and copper (Cu) were determined in the plant leaves and soil by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Significantly high amount of all studied heavy metals were observed in soil and plant leaves along both roads in contrast to control ones. The mean concentration of metals in soil ranged as Cd (2.20-6.83 mg/kg), Pb (4.53-15.29 mg/kg), Ni (29.78-101.26 mg/kg), and Cu (61.68-138.46 mg/kg) and in plant leaves Cd (0.093-0.53 mg/kg), Pb (4.31-16.34 mg/kg), Ni (4.13-16.34 mg/kg) and Cu (2.98-32.74 mg/kg). Among roads, higher metal contamination was noted along N-5 road. Significant temporal variations were also noted in metal contamination along both roads. The order of metal contamination in soil and plant leaves in different seasons was summer > autumn > spring > winter. Furthermore, the metal accumulation potential of Calotropis procera was higher than that of Nerium oleander. Therefore, for sustainable management of metal contamination, the plantation of Calotropis procera is recommended along roadsides.

Exposure to low levels of heavy metals and chronic kidney disease in the US population: A cross sectional study

BACKGROUND

Exposure to heavy metals (cadmium, mercury, and lead) has been linked with adverse health outcomes, especially their nephrotoxic effects at high levels of exposure. We conducted a replication study to examine the association of low-level heavy metal exposure and chronic kidney disease (CKD) using a larger NHANES data set compared to previous studies.

METHODS

The large cross-sectional study comprised 5,175 CKD cases out of 55677 participants aged 20-85 years from the 1999-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey [NHANES]. Logistic regression analysis was applied to estimate the associations between CKD and heavy metals [Cd, Pb, Hg] measured as categorical variables after adjusting with age, race, gender, socioeconomic status, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and blood cotinine level as smoking status.

RESULTS

Compared to the lowest quartile of blood Cd, exposures to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quartiles of blood Cd were statistically significantly associated with higher odds of CKD after adjustment for blood Pb and Hg, with OR = 1.79, [95% CI; 1.55-2.07, p<0.0001], OR = 2.17, [95% CI; 1.88-2.51, p<0.0001] and OR = 1.52, [95% CI; 1.30-1.76, p<0.0001] respectively. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th quartiles of blood Cd remained statistically significantly associated with higher odds of CKD after adjustment for blood cotinine level, with OR = 2.06, [95% CI; 1.80-2.36, p<0.0001], OR = 3.18, [95% CI; 2.79-3.63, p<0.0001] and OR = 5.54, [95% CI; 4.82-6.37, p<0.0001] respectively. Exposure to blood Pb was statistically significantly associated with higher odds of CKD in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quartile groups, after adjustment for all co-variates (ag, gender, race, socio-economic status, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, blood cadmium, mercury, and cotinine levels) in all the four models. Blood Hg level was statistically significantly associated with lower odds of CKD in the 2nd quartile group in model 2, 3rd quartile group in model 1, 2 and 3, and the 4th quartile group in all the four models.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings showed that low blood levels of Cd and Pb were associated with higher odds of CKD while low blood levels of Hg were associated with lower odds of CKD in the US adult population. However, temporal association cannot be determined as it is a cross sectional study.

Ultrafast and highly efficient Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal by magnetic adsorbents derived from gypsum and corncob: Performances and mechanisms

The utilization of gypsum and biomass in environmental remediation has become a novel approach to promote waste recycling. Generally, raw waste materials exhibit limited adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions (HMIs) and often result in poor solid-liquid separation. In this study, through co-pyrolysis with corncob waste, titanium gypsum (TiG) was transformed into magnetic adsorbents (GCx, where x denotes the proportion of corncob in the gypsum-corncob mixture) for the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II). GC10, the optimal adsorbent, which was composed primarily of anhydrite, calcium sulfide, and magnetic Fe3O4, exhibited significantly faster adsorption kinetics (rate constant k1 was 218 times and 9 times of raw TiG for Cd(II) and Pb(II)) and higher adsorption capacity (Qe exceeded 200 mg/g for Cd(II) and 400 mg/g for Pb(II)) than raw TiG and previous adsorbents. Cd(II) removal was more profoundly inhibited in a Cd(II) + Pb(II) binary system, suggesting that GC10 showed better selectivity for Pb(II). Moreover, GC10 could be easily separated from purified water for further recovery, due to its high saturation magnetization value (6.3 emu/g). The superior removal capabilities of GC10 were due to adsorption and surface precipitation of metal sulfides and metal sulfates on the adsorbent surface. Overall, these waste-derived magnetic adsorbents provide a novel and sustainable approach to waste recycling and the deep purification of multiple HMIs.

Biogenic calcium improved Cd2+ and Pb2+ immobilization in soil using the ureolytic bacteria Bacillus pasteurii

Bioremediation based on microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) was conducted in cadmium and lead contaminated soil to investigate the effects of MICP on Cd and Pb in soil. In this study, soil indigenous nitrogen was shown to induce MICP to stabilize heavy metals without inputting exogenous urea. The results showed that applying Bacillus pasteurii coupled with CaCl2 reduced Cd and Pb bioavailability, which could be clarified through the proportion of exchangeable Cd and Pb in soil decreasing by 23.65 % and 12.76 %, respectively. Moreover, B. pasteurii was combined separately with hydroxyapatite (HAP), eggshells (ES), and oyster shells (OS) to investigate their effects on soil heavy metals' chemical fractions, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP)-extractable Cd and Pb as well as enzymatic activity. Results showed that applying B. pasteurii in soil significantly decreased the heavy metals in the exchangeable fraction and increased them in the carbonate phase fraction. When B. pasteurii was combined with ES and OS, the content of carbonate-bound Cd increased by 114.72 % and 118.81 %, respectively, significantly higher than when B. pasteurii was combined with HAP, wherein the fraction of carbonate-bound Cd increased by 86 %. The combination of B. pasteurii and biogenic calcium effectively reduced the leached contents of Cd and Pb in soil, and the TCLP-extractable Cd and Pb fractions decreased by 43.88 % and 30.66 %, respectively, in the BP + ES group and by 52.60 % and 41.77 %, respectively, in the BP + OS group. This proved that MICP reduced heavy metal bioavailability in the soil. Meanwhile, applying B. pasteurii and calcium materials significantly increased the soil urease enzyme activity. The microstructure and chemical composition of the soil samples were studied, and the results from scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction demonstrated the MICP process and identified the formation of CaCO3, Ca0.67Cd0.33CO3, and PbCO3 in heavy metal-contaminated soil.

Highly sensitive detection of Pb2+ in the environment with DNAzyme and rolling circle amplification reaction

Lead (Pb2+) is a toxic heavy metal that can severely pollute the environment and cause harm to public health. Therefore, the prompt and accurate monitoring of lead levels in the environment is vital. In this study, a novel DNAzyme-based cascade signal amplification biosensor that could detect Pb2+ with high sensitivity was designed through the combination of the strand displacement reaction (SDR) and rolling circle amplification (RCA). When Pb2+ is absent, RCA is triggered under the synergistic action of T4 DNA ligase and phi29 DNA polymerase with an artificially fluorophore-labeled S-chains being released to replace the upstream products generated by repeated RCA, thereby restoring the quenched fluorescence and emitting a strong fluorescent signal. After adding Pb2+, 8-17 DNAzyme binds specifically to Pb2+ and catalyzes the cleavage of the rA site on a single-stranded DNA with artificially modified rA site to restrict the RCA. The designed sensor provides a linear detection range for Pb2+ from 25 pM to 1 µM, with a low limit of detection 8.3 pM. Significantly, this sensor still demonstrates satisfactory performance when used for detecting Pb2+ in environment samples (e.g., river water). We consider that our study can provide reference values and ideas for the development of heavy metal ion detection methods.

Association of blood metals with anxiety among adults: A nationally representative cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Previous evidence demonstrated the inconsistent associations between metals and anxiety. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the individual and joint effects of blood lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se) and manganese (Mn) on anxiety in the general population.

METHODS

Data of 4000 participants (aged≥20 years) in the study were retrieved from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2012. Multiple logistic regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS) logistic analysis, and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were fitted to explore the possible effects of single and mixed metal exposures on anxiety. Moreover, this association was assessed by smoking group.

RESULTS

In the study, 24.60 % of participants were in an anxiety state. In logistic regression, blood Pb, Cd, Hg, Se and Mn were not significantly associated with anxiety in all participants. After stratified by smoking group, blood Cd was positively associated with anxiety in the current smoking group [P = 0.029, OR (95 %): 1.708(1.063, 3.040)], whereas not in other groups. In RCS regression, we observed a linear dose-response effect of blood Cd on anxiety stratified by smoking group. In WQS analysis, mixed metal exposures were positively associated with anxiety [P = 0.033, OR (95 %): 1.437(1.031, 2.003)], with Cd (33.69 %) contributing the largest weight to the index.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study showed that excessive exposure to Cd is a significant risk factor for anxiety, and the co-exposures to Pb, Cd, Hg, Se and Mn were positively related with the risk of anxiety in current smokers.

Effective stabilization of heavy metals in solid waste and sludge pyrolysis using intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite: Experiment and simulation study

Pyrolysis is effective in reducing the volume of solid waste and sludge, and produces less pollutants than incineration and landfill, but the process still suffers from heavy metal pollution. Four types of intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite (UIV, DIV, TIV and 3IV) were prepared using urea, dimethylsulfoxide, tributyl phosphate and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as intercalators for the control of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn in municipal sewage sludge (MSL), paper mill sludge (PML), municipal domestic waste (MWA) and aged refuse (AFE). The larger the interlayer spacing of the vermiculite, the more favorable the retention of heavy metals. 3IV was the most effective additive, with an average retention of more than 75 % of all heavy metals at 450 ℃ for the four raw materials. Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were all at low potential ecological risk (Pr), while Cd was moderate or considerable Pr, and the addition of 3IV reduced the Pr. Distribution of intercalators between vermiculite interlayers was haphazard, and interlayer spacing results were close to those of the experiment (except for tributyl phosphate). The reactive electrons mainly flowed from the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) of vermiculite flakes to the Lower Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) of heavy metal chlorides. In contrast, the reactive electrons mostly flowed from the HOMO of heavy metal oxides to the LUMO of vermiculite flakes. Heavy metal oxides were more readily adsorbed on vermiculite flakes than heavy metal chlorides, and the adsorption capacity of Cr and Zn was stronger than that of Cd, Pb and Cu.

Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) feathers as bioindicators of exposure to metals and metalloids contamination in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas from Campeche state, Mexico

Landfills are sources of soil, water, and air pollution due to the release of toxic compounds such as metals and metalloids. In both tropical and temperate environments, scavenger birds such as the Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) that have learned to use these sites as a feeding area are probably exposed to metals, metalloids and other "persistent bioaccumulative toxic substances (PBTs)" released in open dumpsite (OD) and sanitary landfill (SL). The objective of this study is to evaluate the presence and distribution of toxic metals (Al, Sn, Hg, Cu, Pb, Cd, Cr) and As in OD and SL from urban, semi-urban and rural localities in Campeche, México, using molting feathers of C. atratus as bioindicators. A total of 125 Black Vulture primary and secondary wing feathers were collected from OD and SL. Metals were determined by voltammetry through acid digestion. The highest levels of metals occurred in landfills in urban, semi-urban, and rural localities. The elements with the highest concentrations were Al, with an average of 35.67 ± 33.51 μg g-1 from rural environments, and As, with 16.20 ± 30.06 μg g-1 from the urban localities. Mercury was the only element that had a very homogeneous distribution between the three environments we studied. In general, Pb, Hg, Cu and Cd were the elements that presented the lowest concentrations with 0.32 ± 0.35, 0.16 ± 0.22, 0.14 ± 0.31 and 0.06 ± 0.10 μg g-1, respectively regardless of any particular location or environment. Black Vultures from dumpsites are good bioindicators of what humans consume in urban, semi-urban, and rural environments. However, the conservation of vultures is of great importance since these scavenger birds perform ecosystem services by feeding on decomposing organic material.

Unveiling the lead exposure attributed burden in Iran from 1990 to 2019 through the lens of the Global Burden of Disease study 2019

This study aimed to investigate the estimated burden attributed to lead exposure (LE), at the national and subnational levels from 1990 to 2019 in Iran. The burden attributed to LE was determined through the estimation of deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years of life lost (YLLs) and years lived with disability (YLDs) using the comparative risk assessment method of Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study presenting as age-standardized per 100,000 person year (PY) with 95% uncertainty intervals (95% UI). Furthermore, the burden of each disease were recorded independently. Eventually, the age-standardized YLLs, DALYs, deaths and YLDs rates attributed to LE demonstrated a decrease of 50.7%, 48.9%, 38.0%, and 36.4%, respectively, from 1990 to 2019. The most important causes of LE burden are divided into two acute and chronic categories: acute, mainly causes mental disorders (DALYs rate of 36.0 in 2019), and chronic, results in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) (DALYs rate of 391.8) and chronic kidney diseases (CKDs) (DALYs rate of 26.6), with CVDs bearing the most significant burden. At the sub-national level, a decrease in burden was evident in most provinces; moreover, low and low-middle SDI provinces born the highest burden. The burden increased mainly by ageing and was higher in males than females. It was concluded that although the overall decrease in the burden; still it is high, especially in low and low-middle SDI provinces, in advanced ages and in males. Among IDID, CKDs and CVDs that are the most important causes of LE-attributed burden in Iran; CVDs bear the highest burden.

Determination of lead content in oilseed rape leaves in silicon-free and silicon environments based on deep transfer learning and fluorescence hyperspectral imaging

The ability of fluorescence hyperspectral imaging to predict heavy metal lead (Pb) concentration in oilseed rape leaves was studied in silicon-free and silicon environments. Further, the transfer stacked convolution auto-encoder (T-SCAE) algorithm was proposed based on the stacked convolution auto-encoder (SCAE) algorithm. Fluorescence hyperspectral images of oilseed rape leaves under different Pb stress contents were obtained in the silicon-free and silicon environments. The entire region of oilseed rape leaves was chosen as the region of interest (ROI) to obtain fluorescence spectra. First of all, standard normalized variable (SNV) algorithm was implemented as the preferred preprocessing method, and the fluorescence spectral data processed by SNV was utilized for further analysis. Further, SCAE was used to reduce the dimensionality of the best pre-processed spectral data, and compared with the traditional dimensionality reduction algorithm. Finally, the optimal SCAE deep learning network was transferred to obtain the T-SCAE model to verify the transferability between the deep learning models in silicon-free and silicon environments. The results show that the SVR model based on the depth features extracted by SCAE has the best performance in predicting different Pb concentrations in silicon-free or silicon environments, and the coefficient of determination (Rp2), root mean square error (RMSEP) and residual predictive deviation (RPD) of prediction set in silicon-free or silicon environments were 0.9374, 0.02071 mg/kg and 3.268, and 0.9416, 0.01898 mg/kg and 3.316, respectively. Moreover, the SVR model based on the depth feature extracted by T-SCAE has the best performance in predicting different Pb concentrations in silicon-free and silicon environments, and the Rp2, RMSEP and RPD of the optimal prediction set were 0.9385, 0.02017 mg/kg and 3.291, respectively. The combination of hyperspectral fluorescence imaging and deep transfer learning algorithm can effectively detect different Pb concentrations in oilseed rape leaves in both non-silicon environment and silicon environment.

Evaluation of soil pollution by heavy metal using index calculations and multivariate statistical analysis

This study aims to assess the extent of heavy metals (HMs) pollution in soil and identify its potential sources using single and integrated pollution index calculations, and multivariate statistical analysis. The HM concentrations of soil samples were analyzed using ICP-MS. The concentrations (mg/kg) of arsenic (As) ranged from 2.8 to 208.1, cadmium (Cd) from 0.1 to 0.3, cobalt (Co) from 1.9 to 20.5, copper (Cu) from 3.7 to 17.7, nickel (Ni) from 14.7 to 110.6, and lead (Pb) from 6.7 to 37.3. High levels of As contents and physicochemical parameters were found in the northeastern parts of the study area, while levels of other HMs were high in the remaining parts. The HM contents of some soil samples exceeded the average values of basalt and limestone in the study area, as well as the upper, bulk, and lower continental crusts, shale, and soil (worldwide). Multiple index methods were used to assess the pollution risk, and it was determined that some soil samples were moderately to considerably contaminated with varying levels of As, Cd, Co, Ni, and Pb. Multivariate statistical analyses provided that the source of HMs contamination in the soil was a result of geogenic and/or anthropogenic activities. Geogenic sources were associated with weathering rock units, while anthropogenic sources were linked to industrial activities, traffic emissions, and agricultural applications. The findings are useful for detecting contamination by HMs in soil, and they could contribute to future monitoring programs to prevent soil contamination and protect the health of living organisms.

Measurement of elements by portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometry for the study of adsorption processes: the case of Pb2+adsorption on soybean straw biochar

This study evaluated the reliability of portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) in Pb2+adsorption kinetics and isotherm experiments using soybean straw biochar. The research aimed to compare pXRF results with those obtained through traditional atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Soybean straw biochar, produced at 400 °C, was employed as the adsorbent for Pb2+. The efficiency of adsorption was assessed using Langmuir and Freundlich models. The kinetics of Pb2+adsorption was analysed through pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The pseudo-second-order model described the kinetics of Pb2+adsorption on biochar better than the pseudo-first order model. Importantly, the pXRF technique demonstrated comparable results to those of AAS, making it a reliable and resource-efficient method for studying Pb2+kinetics. The results of the isotherm analyses fit the Langmuir model, indicating a desirable and irreversible adsorption of Pb2+on biochar. PXRF measurements on biochar allowed simultaneous observations of Pb2+adsorption and K+and Ca2+desorption, highlighting ionic exchange as the primary adsorption mechanism. In conclusion, our results showcased the applicability of pXRF for Pb+2adsorption studies in biochars, offering a valuable alternative to traditional methods. The findings contribute to the understanding of biochar as an effective adsorbent for heavy metals, emphasizing the potential of pXRF for cost-effective and efficient environmental research. In this study, we present a novel and detailed procedure that will allow other researchers to continue their studies on Pb2+adsorption on biochar or similar matrices, significantly reducing the resources and time used and enabling the simultaneous study of the behavior of other ions participating in the process.

Homemade weaning foods as a source of lead and mercury exposure in Korean infants - A dietary risk assessment study

Lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) are neurodevelopmental toxicants that pose risks to cognitive and behavioral health. Given early childhood's vulnerability to these metals, understanding their sources and pathways of exposure during infancy is crucial for public health. During the weaning process, infants may be exposed to metals through the baby food they consume. We aimed to assess metal exposure through homemade weaning foods by analyzing 288 samples consumed by 157 Korean infants aged 6-, 9-, 12-, 15-, and 24-27 months. Pb was detected in 65 % of samples, with levels reaching up to 169 ng/g. Notably, 58 % exceeded the Maximum Level (ML) of 10 ng/g, with a median concentration of 14.7 ng/g fresh weight. Total Hg was found in 88 % of samples, with a median concentration of 4.56 ng/g fresh weight. Estimated median daily intakes of Pb and Hg were 0.29 and 0.09 μg/kg/d, respectively. Considering a benchmark dose for Pb (0.5 μg/kg/d by EFSA), 94 % (the margin of exposure <10) of all age groups was estimated to have a potential health concern associated with homemade baby food consumption. For Hg, only 6 % exceeded a hazard quotients of 1 compared to a provisional tolerable weekly intake for Hg (4 μg/kg/week by WHO). This study marks the first direct assessment of daily Pb and Hg intake through homemade baby food among Korean infants. Our findings underscore the urgent need for heightened awareness regarding metal exposure through homemade baby food.

Trophodynamics and potential health risk assessment of heavy metals in the mangrove food web in Yanpu Bay, China

Mangroves are the cradle of coastal water biodiversity and are susceptible to heavy metal pollution. However, the trophic transfer mechanism of heavy metals in the mangrove food web and the resulting human health risks are not fully understood. Heavy metal concentration (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, V, Co) and stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) were evaluated in sediments and particulate organic matter, litter, and aquatic organisms (plankton, arthropods, mollusks, omnivorous fish, and carnivorous fish) from the Yanpu Bay mangroves. The results revealed that heavy metals exhibited different trophic transfer patterns. As and Hg were efficiently biomagnified, with trophic magnification factors of 1.17 and 1.42, respectively; while Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd, Pb, V, and Co were efficiently biodiluted. Zn exhibited a trophic magnification factor > 1 and was not significantly correlated with δ15N (p > 0.05), suggesting no biomagnification or biodilution. The heavy metals in the important fishery species (omnivorous fish and carnivorous fish) were below the permissible limits, except for Zn in Ophichthus apicalis. The assessment of probabilistic health risks revealed that fish consumption in adults and children posed an acceptable risk (total target hazard quotient <1).

The Caribbean and Mesoamerica Biogeochemical Isotope Overview (CAMBIO)

The Caribbean & Mesoamerica Biogeochemical Isotope Overview (CAMBIO) is an archaeological data community designed to integrate published biogeochemical data from the Caribbean, Mesoamerica, and southern Central America to address questions about dynamic interactions among humans, animals, and the environment in the region over the past 10,000 years. Here we present the CAMBIO human dataset, which consists of more than 16,000 isotopic measurements from human skeletal tissue samples (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S, δ18O, 87Sr/86Sr, 206/204Pb, 207/204Pb, 208/204Pb, 207/206Pb) from 290 archaeological sites dating between 7000 BC to modern times. The open-access dataset also includes detailed chronological, contextual, and laboratory/sample preparation information for each measurement. The collated data are deposited on the open-access CAMBIO data community via the Pandora Initiative data platform ( https://pandoradata.earth/organization/cambio ).

Association between exposure to multiple metals and stress urinary incontinence in women: a mixture approach

There is limited evidence linking exposure to heavy metals, especially mixed metals, to stress urinary incontinence (SUI). This study aimed to explore the relationship between multiple metals exposure and SUI in women. The data were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2007-2020. In the study, a total of 13 metals were analyzed in blood and urine. In addition, 5155 adult women were included, of whom 2123 (41.2%) suffered from SUI. The logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were conducted to assess the association of single metal exposure with SUI risk. The Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) were used to estimate the combined effect of multiple metals exposure on SUI. First, we observed that blood Pb, Hg and urinary Pb, Cd were positively related to SUI risk, whereas urinary W was inversely related by multivariate logistic regression (all p-FDR < 0.05). Additionally, a significant non-linear relationship between blood Hg and SUI risk was observed by RCS analysis. In the co-exposure models, WQS model showed that exposure to metal mixtures in blood [OR (95%CI) = 1.18 (1.06, 1.31)] and urine [OR (95%CI) = 1.18 (1.03, 1.34)] was positively associated with SUI risk, which was consistent with the results of BKMR model. A potential interaction was identified between Hg and Cd in urine. Hg and Cd were the main contributors to the combined effects. In summary, our study indicates that exposure to heavy metal mixtures may increase SUI risk in women.

Toxicological profile and potential health concerns through metals and trace elements exposure in brick kiln workers from Lahore, Pakistan

This study examined levels of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As) in blood, hair, and nails of 18 brick kiln workers from three brick kiln units located around a metropolitan city, Lahore, Pakistan. All the trace elements except Hg and As were detected in the studied matrices of Brick kiln workers. In general, brick kiln workers reflect the highest concentration of Pb, followed by Cd, Cr, and Cu. Of the pollutants analyzed, Pb has the highest mean (min-max) concentrations at 0.35 (0.09-0.65) in blood (μg/mL), 0.34 (0.14-0.71) in hairs (μg/g), and 0.44 (0.32-0.59) in nails (μg/g) of brick kiln workers. Following Pb, the trend was Cd 0.17 (0.10-0.24), Cu 0.11(0.03-0.27), and Cr 0.07 (0.04-0.08) in blood (μg/mL), followed by Cr 0.11(0.05-0.20), Cd 0.09 (0.03-0.13), and Cu 0.08 (0.04-0.16) in hairs (μg/g) and Cu 0.16 (0.05-0.36), Cd 0.13 (0.11-0.17), and Cr 0.10 (0.05-0.14) in nails (μg/g) respectively. Relatively higher concentrations of metals and other trace elements in blood depicts recent dietary exposure. The difference of trace elements except Pb was non-significant (P > 0.05) among studied matrices of workers as well as between Zigzag and traditional exhaust-based brick kilns. The concentrations of Pb, Cd and Cr in blood of brick kilns workers are higher than the values reported to cause health problems in human populations. It is concluded that chronic exposure to metals and other trace elements may pose some serious health risks to brick kiln workers which needs to be addressed immediately to avoid future worst-case scenarios.

p-Thiocresol Functionalized Cesium Lead Bromide (PTC@CsPbBr3): A Fluorometric Sensing Probe for the Detection of Cholesterol

Inorganic halide-based perovskites (e.g., cesium lead bromide) are tremendously useful semiconducting materials due to their unique optoelectronic properties. However, degradation of these perovskites under humid conditions is one of the major drawbacks to prevent their wide applications. Herein, passivated cesium lead bromide nanoparticles are synthesized using p-thiocresol as a passivating ligand, and this stable version of perovskite is later applied successfully as a sensor probe towards cholesterol detection. The designed sensor can detect cholesterol with a lower detection limit of 0.24 ppm and a fast response time of 10 s. The mechanism of quenching PTC@CsPbBr3 upon the gradual addition of cholesterol is discussed. Further, the sensor is successfully applied in the detection of cholesterol in real samples (blood serum). This work presents PTC@CsPbBr3 as a novel sensing platform for detecting cholesterol well in biomedical applications.

Heavy metal association with chronic kidney disease of unknown cause in central India-results from a case-control study

BACKGROUND

Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown cause (CKDu) a disease of exclusion, and remains unexplained in various parts of the world, including India. Previous studies have reported mixed findings about the role of heavy metals or agrochemicals in CKDu. These studies compared CKDu with healthy controls but lacked subjects with CKD as controls. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis whether heavy metals, i.e. Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), and Chromium (Cr) are associated with CKDu, in central India.

METHODS

The study was conducted in a case-control manner at a tertiary care hospital. CKDu cases (n = 60) were compared with CKD (n = 62) and healthy subjects (n = 54). Blood and urine levels of As, Cd, Pb, and Cr were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma- Optical Emission Spectrometry. Pesticide use, painkillers, smoking, and alcohol addiction were also evaluated. The median blood and urine metal levels were compared among the groups by the Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test.

RESULTS

CKDu had significantly higher pesticide and surface water usage as a source of drinking water. Blood As levels (median, IQR) were significantly higher in CKDu 91.97 (1.3-132.7) µg/L compared to CKD 4.5 (0.0-58.8) µg/L and healthy subjects 39.01 (4.8-67.4) µg/L (p < 0.001) On multinominal regression age and sex adjusted blood As was independently associated with CKDu[ OR 1.013 (95%CI 1.003-1.024) P < .05].Blood and urinary Cd, Pb, and Cr were higher in CKD compared to CKDu (p > .05). Urinary Cd, Pb and Cr were undetectable in healthy subjects and were significantly higher in CKDu and CKD compared to healthy subjects (P = < 0.001). There was a significant correlation of Cd, Pb and Cr in blood and urine with each other in CKDu and CKD subjects as compared to healthy subjects. Surface water use also associated with CKDu [OR 3.178 (95%CI 1.029-9.818) p < .05).

CONCLUSION

The study showed an independent association of age and sex adjusted blood As with CKDu in this Indian cohort. Subjects with renal dysfunction (CKDu and CKD) were found to have significantly higher metal burden of Pb, Cd, As, and Cr as compared to healthy controls. CKDu subjects had significantly higher pesticide and surface water usage, which may be the source of differential As exposure in these subjects.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in some vegetables-Erbil City-Kurdistan Region of Iraq

Heavy metals can have significant impacts on human health due to their toxicity and potential to accumulate in the body over time. Some heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic, are particularly harmful even at low concentrations. The estimation of hazards of vegetable intake to human health as well as explore the of heavy metals accumulation in different vegetables (cucumbers, tomato, eggplant, and bell peppers) collected in Erbil city from different source locally and imported from nearby country are conducted. The heavy metals concentration (cooper, zinc, lead and cadmium) was measured and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometry. The maximum concentration of Pb was 27.95 mg/kg and the minimum was 6.49 mg/kg; for Cd, the concentration was 1.43 and 0.99 mg/kg, 74.94 and 5.14 mg/kg for Zn; and for Cu, the result was 56.25 and 8.2 mg/kg for the maximum and minimum, which they are within limits described by Food Agricultural Organization, but more than health limits and health risks calculated by mean of hazard quotient (HQ) techniques for Cu and Pb which they are more than 1. The local sample that collected in Erbil city show less concentration of heavy metals and low HQ in comparison with imported samples. The carcinogenic risk study shows elevated risk of accumulative consuming of edible part of those plant which they exceed the permissible limit that is 10-6.

Zea mays cultivation, biochar, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal inoculation influenced lead immobilization

Plant cultivation can influence the immobilization of heavy metals in soil. However, the roles of soil amendments and microorganisms in crop-based phytoremediation require further exploration. In this study, we evaluated the impact of Zea mays L. cultivation, biochar application, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation on soil lead (Pb) immobilization. Our results indicated that biochar addition resulted in a significant, 42.00%, reduction in AMF colonization. Plant cultivation, AMF inoculation, and biochar addition all contributed to enhanced Pb immobilization, as evidenced by decreased levels of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid- and CaCl2-extractable Pb in the soil. Furthermore, soil subjected to plant cultivation with AMF and biochar displayed reduced concentrations of bioavailable Pb. Biochar addition altered the distribution of Pb fractions in the soil, transforming the acid-soluble form into the relatively inert reducible and oxidizable forms. Additionally, biochar, AMF, and their combined use promoted maize growth parameters, including height, stem diameter, shoot and root biomass, and phosphorus uptake, while simultaneously reducing the shoot Pb concentration. These findings suggest a synergistic effect in Pb phytostabilization. In summary, despite the adverse impact of biochar on mycorrhizal growth, cultivating maize with the concurrent use of biochar and AMF emerges as a recommended and effective strategy for Pb phytoremediation.IMPORTANCEHeavy metal contamination in soil is a pressing environmental issue, and phytoremediation has emerged as a sustainable approach for mitigating this problem. This study sheds light on the potential of maize cultivation, biochar application, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation to enhance the immobilization of Pb in contaminated soil. The findings demonstrate that the combined use of biochar and AMF during maize cultivation can significantly improve Pb immobilization and simultaneously enhance maize growth, offering a promising strategy for sustainable and effective Pb phytoremediation practices. This research contributes valuable insights into the field of phytoremediation and its potential to address heavy metal pollution in agricultural soils.

Smart Free-Standing Bilayer Polyacrylamide/DNA Hybrid Hydrogel Film-Based Sensing System Using Changes in Bending Angles as a Visual Signal Readout

Stimuli-responsive DNA hydrogels have shown great potential in sensing applications due to their attractive properties such as programmable target responsiveness, excellent biocompatibility, and biodegradability. In contrast to the extensively developed DNA hydrogel sensing systems based on the stimuli-responsive hydrogel-to-solution phase transition of the hydrogel matrix, the quantitative sensing application of DNA hydrogels exhibiting smart shape deformations has rarely been explored. Moreover, bulk DNA hydrogel-based sensing systems also suffer from high material cost and slow response. Herein, free-standing bilayer polyacrylamide/DNA hybrid hydrogel films with programmable responsive properties directed by the sequence of functional DNA units have been constructed. Compared with bulk DNA hydrogels, these DNA hydrogel films with a thickness at the micrometer scale not only greatly reduce the consumption of DNA materials but also facilitate the mass transfer of biomacromolecular substances within the hydrogel network, thus favoring their sensing applications. Therefore, a target-responsive smart DNA hydrogel film-based sensor system is further demonstrated based on the large amplitude macroscopic shape deformation of the film as a visual signal readout. As a proof of concept, Pb2+ or UO22+ ion-responsive DNA units were introduced into the active layer of the bilayer hydrogel films. In the presence of Pb2+ or UO22+ ions, the occurrence of a cleavage reaction within the DNA units leads to the release of DNA segments from the hydrogel film, inducing a dramatic shape deformation of the film, and thus sensing of Pb2+ or UO22+ ions with high specificity is achieved based on measuring the bending angle changes of these smart free-standing films. These smart DNA hydrogel film sensors with target-programmable responsiveness, simple operation, and ease of storage may hold promise for future rapid on-site testing applications.

Association between lead and circulating markers of inflammation among traffic enforcers in Metro Manila, Philippines: the MMDA traffic enforcer's health study

PURPOSE

Several epidemiological studies have linked lead (Pb) exposure to induced oxidative stress and the promotion of inflammatory response. We performed a within-subjects study (repeated measures study) to evaluate the relationship between the concentration of blood lead (B-Pb) and toenail lead (T-Pb) and circulating markers of inflammation.

METHODS

We evaluated the associations between B-Pb concentrations and T-Pb concentrations and circulating markers of inflammation, soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (s-ICAM-1), soluble vascular adhesion molecule-1 (s-VCAM-1), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) on 158 traffic enforcers from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic enforcer's health study. Linear mixed-effects models with random subject-specific intercepts were fitted to estimate the association between B-Pb and T-Pb exposure and circulating markers of inflammation, adjusting for confounding factors.

RESULTS

Traffic enforcers were middle-aged men (89.4%) with a mean age (± SD) of 37.1 years ± 8.9 years and had a total of 293 valid markers of inflammation measurements. B-Pb concentration was related to increased hs-CRP levels. A 10% increase in B-Pb was associated with a 5.7% increase in hs-CRP level [95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.3-10.1]. However, B-Pb was not associated with s-ICAM-1 and s-VCAM-1. Furthermore, no associations were observed between T-Pb and all the circulating markers of inflammation.

CONCLUSIONS

Low-level B-Pb may increase hs-CRP among traffic enforcers. Moreover, the study suggests that Pb via the oxidative and inflammation pathways may have an essential role in the development of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, MMDA and the Department of Labor and Employment can use our study's findings as evidence to conduct routine screening of blood heavy metals, especially Pb, among MMDA and other traffic enforcers as part of their yearly medical examination.

Preparation of magnetic DTPA-modified chitosan composite microspheres for enhanced adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

In this study, magnetic DTPA-modified chitosan composite microspheres (MDCM) were prepared by reverse emulsion-double crosslinking method (carbodiimide followed by glutaraldehyde) for removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solution. The obtained magnetic adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, VSM, BET, and 13C NMR. The effects of the pH, contact time, initial concentration, and competitive metal cations (Na(I), Ca(II), or Mg(II)) on Pb(II) adsorption were investigated. The results revealed that MDCM exhibited high removal performance over a wide pH range and in the presence of competitive metal cations. The maximum adsorption capacity of MDCM for Pb(II) is 214.63 mg g-1 at pH 3, which is higher than most recently reported magnetic adsorbents. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms can be described by the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively. In addition, MDCM is easy to regenerate and can be reused five cycles with high adsorption capacity. Finally, the adsorption mechanism was further revealed by FTIR and XPS analysis. Overall, MDCM has practical application potential in removing Pb(II) from contaminated wastewater due to its high adsorption efficiency, good reusability, and convenient magnetic separation.

Biogenic manganese oxides promote metal(loid) remediation by shaping microbial communities in biological aqua crust

Biological aqua crust (biogenic aqua crust-BAC) is a potentially sustainable solution for metal(loid) bioremediation in global water using solar energy. However, the key geochemical factors and underlying mechanisms shaping microbial communities in BAC remain poorly understood. The current study aimed at determining the in situ metal(loid) distribution and the key geochemical factors related to microbial community structure and metal(loid)-related genes in BAC of a representative Pb/Zn tailing pond. Here we showed that abundant metal(loid)s (e.g. Pb, As) were co-distributed with Mn/Fe-rich minerals (e.g. biogenic Mn oxide, FeOOH) in BAC. Biogenic Mn oxide (i.e. Mn) was the most dominant factor in shaping microbial community structure in BAC and source tailings. Along with the fact that keystone species (e.g. Burkholderiales, Haliscomenobacter) have the potential to promote Mn ion oxidization and particle agglomeration, as well as Mn is highly associated with metal(loid)-related genes, especially genes related to As redox (e.g. arsC, aoxA), and Cd transport (e.g. zipB), biogenic Mn oxides thus effectively enhance metal(loid) remediation by accelerating the formation of organo-mineral aggregates in biofilm-rich BAC system. Our study indicated that biogenic Mn oxides may play essential roles in facilitating in situ metal(loid) bioremediation in BAC of mine drainage.

Application of coconut shell activated carbon filter in vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland for enhanced multi-metal bioremediation and antioxidant response of Salvinia cucullate

Coconut shell activated carbon (CNSAC) was applied as a filter layer in hybrid vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland (H-VSSF-CW), in order to enhance the multi-metal removal efficiency of the constructed wetland (CW) and to reduce heavy metal accumulation on Salvinia cucullata. Treatment P + AC, (having CNSAC filter layer), showed 32, 21 and 34% more Cd, Cr, and Pb removal efficiency than treatment P (without CNSAC layer). CNSAC activated carbon adsorbed Cd and Pb and Cr by functional groups -NH, -NO2, -C-O, -OH and -CO, and significantly reduced Cd and Pb exposure to S. cucullate. Chromium adsorption by CNSAC filter layer was half (just 25% of total input) of the Cd and Pb. In treatment P, due to high Cd, Pb and Cr accumulation in S. cucullate, the antioxidant defense mechanism of the plant was collapsed and cell death was observed, which in turn has resulted reduced biomass gain (5% reduction). On the other hand, in treatment P + AC, an antioxidant defense mechanism was active in the form significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased of SOD, CAT and proline content while reduced MDA, EL, %EB and soluble sugar. So, the application of CNSAC increased the heavy metal removal efficiency of H-VSSF-CW by adsorption of a considerable share of heavy metal and hence, reduced the heavy metal load/exposure to S. cucullate.

Stabilization of heavy metals in solid waste and sludge pyrolysis by intercalation-exfoliation modified vermiculite

Increasing amounts of solid waste and sludge have created many environmental management problems. Pyrolysis can effectively reduce the volume of solid waste and sludge, but there is still the problem of heavy metal contamination, which limits the application of pyrolysis in environmental management. The intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite (IEMV) by intercalators of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide were used to control the release of Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb during pyrolysis process of sludge or solid waste. The retention of heavy metals in sludge was generally better than that in solid waste. The IEMV by octadecyltrimethylammonium bromide as the intercalator calcined 800 °C (STAB-800) was the best additive for heavy metal retention, and the retention of Cr, Cu and Zn was significantly better than that of Pb and Cd. Cr, Cu, Zn and Pb were at low risk, while Cd had considerable risk under certain circumstances. New models were proposed to comprehensively evaluate the results of the risk and forms of heavy metals, and the increasing temperature was beneficial in reducing the hazards of heavy metals by the addition of STAB-800. The reaction mechanism of heavy metals with vermiculite was revealed by simulation of reaction sites, Fukui Function and Frontier Molecular Orbital. Thermal activation-intercalated-exfoliated modified vermiculite (T-IEMV) is more reactive and had more active sites for heavy metals. Mg atoms and outermost O atoms are the main atoms for T-IEMV to react with heavy metals. The Cr, Cu and Zn have better adsorption capacity by T-IEMV than Pb and Cd. This study provides a new insight into managing solid waste and sludge and controlling heavy metal environmental pollution.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in desulfurized seawater discharged from a coal-fired power plant in Qingdao

Despite the prevalence of discharge of large volumes of heavy-metal-bearing seawater from coal-fired power plants into adjacent seas, studies on the associated ecological risks remain limited. This study continuously monitored concentrations of seven heavy metals (i.e. As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn) in surface seawater near the outfall of a coal-fired power plant in Qingdao, China over three years. The results showed average concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn of 2.63, 0.33, 2.97, 4.63, 0.008, 0.85, and 25.00 μg/L, respectively. Given the lack of data on metal toxicity to local species, this study investigated species composition and biomass near discharge outfalls and constructed species sensitivity distribution (SSD) curves with biological flora characteristics. Hazardous concentrations for 5% of species (HC5) for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn derived from SSDs constructed from chronic toxicity data for native species were 3.23, 2.22, 0.06, 2.83, 0.66, 4.70, and 11.07 μg/L, respectively. This study further assessed ecological risk of heavy metals by applying the Hazard Quotient (HQ) and Joint Probability Curve (JPC) based on long-term heavy metal exposure data and chronic toxicity data for local species. The results revealed acceptable levels of ecological risk for As, Cd, Hg, and Pb, but unacceptable levels for Cr, Cu, and Zn. The order of studied heavy metals in terms of ecological risk was Cr > Cu ≈ Zn > As > Cd ≈ Pb > Hg. The results of this study can guide the assessment of ecological risk at heavy metal contaminated sites characterized by relatively low heavy metal concentrations and high discharge volumes, such as receiving waters of coal-fired power plant effluents.

Chitosan-assisted self-assembly of flower-shaped ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on screen-printed carbon electrode for Impedimetric detection of Cd2+, Pb2+, and Hg2+ heavy metal ions in various water samples

This study focuses on the fabrication of a novel sensing platform on a screen-printed carbon electrode, modified by a combination of hydrothermally synthesized iron dioxide (ε-Fe2O3) nanoparticles and Chitosan (CS) biopolymer. This unique organic-inorganic hybrid material was developed for Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) sensing, specifically targeting heavy metal ions that include Hg2+, Cd2+, as well as Pb2+. The investigation encompassed a comprehensive analysis of various aspects of the prepared Fe2O3 and CS/ε-Fe2O3 nanocomposites, including phase identification, determination of crystallite size, assessment of surface morphology, etc. CS/ε-Fe2O3 was drop-casted and deposited on the Screen-Printed Electrode (SPE). The resulting sensor exhibited excellent performance in the precise and selective quantification of Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions, with minimal interference from other substances. The fabricated sensor exhibits excellent performance as the detection range for Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions linearity is 2-20 μM, sensitivity, and LOD are 243 Ω/ μM cm2 and 0.191 μM, 191 Ω/μM cm2, and 0.167 μM, 879 Ω/ μM cm2, and 0.177 μM respectively. The stability of the CS/ε-Fe2O3/SPE electrode is demonstrated by checking its conductivity for up to 60 days for Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions. The reusability of the fabricated electrode is 14 scans, 13 scans, and 12 scans for Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ ions respectively. The findings indicate the successful development of an innovative CS/ε-Fe2O3 electrode for the EIS sensing platform. This platform demonstrates notable potential for addressing the critical need for efficient and sensitive EIS sensors capable of detecting a range of hazardous heavy metal ions, including Hg2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+.

Concentrations and distribution of 210Pb in bird feathers and its potential for tracing age and flight times

Bird feathers have been widely used as environmental indicators, providing key information on environmental pollution. However, there is little available information on the adsorption of natural radioactivity in bird feathers and consequently, its impact on the field of movement ecology is not yet known. This study investigates the concentration and distribution of 210Pb in wing- and tail-feathers of different bird species with contrasting migratory strategies, and discusses its potential use as a tracer of age and flight times. Adsorption of 210Pb in bird feathers is directly related to the interaction of feathers with air, therefore it is hypothesised that the presence of this radionuclide is proportional to the length of flight times, and is asymmetrically distributed in flight feathers. Consequently, a significant difference is expected between 210Pb concentrations in feathers of long-distance migrants when compared to sedentary species. For this purpose, a total of 45 samples from eight individuals of three bird species with distinct migratory strategies were analysed: a highly aerial and long-distance migratory species (Common swift Apus apus), and two largely sedentary species widely distributed across Europe (Great tit Parus major and Tawny owl Strix aluco). Novel findings show that the content of 210Pb in bird feathers of adult migratory birds is much higher than in sedentary birds or juvenile individuals, demonstrating this naturally occurring radionuclide can provide information about the contact time between feathers and air. Additionally, 210Pb adsorption was not evenly distributed in bird feathers. The findings provide a new method to trace age and flight time of birds using 210Pb in feathers, complementing conventional techniques in bird migration studies.

Review Article on Molecular Mechanism of Regulation of Hypertension by Macro-elements (Na, K, Ca and Mg), Micro-elements/Trace Metals (Zn and Cu) and Toxic Elements (Pb and As)

Hypertension (HT) is a medical condition arising due to increase in blood pressure (BP) prevalent worldwide. The balanced dietary intakes of macro-elements and micro-elements including Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, and Cu have been described to maintain BP in humans by regulating the osmolarity of blood, cells/tissues, prevention of generation of oxidative and nitrosative stress (OANS), and endothelial damage through their functioning as important components of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), antioxidant enzyme defense system, and maintenance of blood vascular-endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) functions. However, inadequate/excess dietary intakes of Na/K, Ca/Mg, and Zn/Cu along with higher Pb and As exposures recognized to induce HT through common mechanisms including the followings: endothelial dysfunctions due to impairment of vasodilatation, increased vasoconstriction and arterial stiffness, blood clotting, inflammation, modification of sympathetic activity and higher catecholamine release, increased peripheral vascular resistance, and cardiac output; increased OANS due to reduced and elevated activities of extracellular superoxide dismutase and NAD(P)H oxidase, less nitric oxide bioavailability, decrease in cGMP and guanylate cyclase activity, increase in intracellular Ca2+ ions in VSMCs, and higher pro-inflammatory cytokines; higher parathyroid and calcitriol hormones; activation/suppression of RAAS resulting imbalance in blood Na+, K+, and water regulated by renin, angiotensin II, and aldosterone through affecting natriuresis/kaliuresis/diuresis; elevation in serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, decrease in HDL cholesterol due to defect in lipoprotein metabolism. The present study recommends the need to review simple dietary mineral intervention studies/supplementation trials before keeping their individual dietary excess intakes/exposures in consideration because their interactions lead to elevation and fall of their concentrations in body affecting onset of HT.

Maternal exposure to metals and time-to-pregnancy: The MIREC cohort study

OBJECTIVE

To study the association between maternal exposure to arsenic, cadmium, lead, manganese and mercury, time-to-pregnancy (TTP) and infertility.

DESIGN

Pregnancy-based retrospective TTP cohort study.

SETTING

Hospitals and clinics from ten cities across Canada.

POPULATION

A total of 1784 pregnant women.

METHODS

Concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, lead, manganese and mercury were measured in maternal whole blood during the first trimester of pregnancy as a proxy of preconception exposure. Discrete-time Cox proportional hazards models generated fecundability odds ratios (FOR) for the association between metals and TTP. Logistic regression generated odds ratios (OR) for the association between metals and infertility. Models were adjusted for maternal age, pre-pregnancy body mass index, education, income, recruitment site and plasma lipids.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

TTP was self-reported as the number of months of unprotected intercourse to become pregnant. Infertility was defined as TTP longer than 12 months.

RESULTS

A total of 1784 women were eligible for the analysis. Mean ± SD maternal age and gestational age at interview were 32.2 ± 5.0 years, and 11.6 ± 1.6 weeks, respectively. Exposure to arsenic, cadmium, manganese or mercury was not associated with TTP or infertility. Increments of one standard deviation of lead concentrations resulted in a shorter TTP (adjusted FOR 1.09, 95% CI 1.02-1.16); however, the association was not linear when exposure was modelled in tertiles.

CONCLUSION

Blood concentrations of metals at typical levels of exposure among Canadian pregnant women were not associated with TTP or infertility. Further studies are needed to assess the role of lead, if any, on TTP.

Running the gauntlet; flyway-wide patterns of pollutant exposure in blood of migratory shorebirds

Shorebirds (order Charadriiformes) are among the world's most threatened avian taxa. Within the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF), a major threat to shorebirds' survival may be the gauntlet of pollution along the flyway. Metals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) persist in the environment to the detriment of wildlife. In this study, we analysed element and PFAS concentrations in blood from 142 individuals across six species of Arctic-breeding migratory shorebirds with contrasting population trends, to discern species- and site-specific pollution differences, and determine how pollution correlated with population trends of EAAF shorebirds. Potential within-year pollution variations were investigated by blood-sampling birds at two sites, representing different points in the birds' annual migrations: staging in Taiwan on southward migrations and at non-breeding grounds in Western Australia (WA). Species' pollutant concentrations were compared to established population trends. Concentrations of potentially toxic elements were low in most individuals regardless of species. PFASs (range: <0.001-141 ng/g), Hg (<0.001-9910 ng/g) and Pb (<0.01-1210 ng/g) were higher in Taiwan than in WA (PFAS Taiwan median: 14.5 ng/g, WA median: 3.45 ng/g; Hg Taiwan: 338 ng/g, WA: 23.4 ng/g; Pb Taiwan: 36.8 ng/g, WA: 2.26 ng/g). Meanwhile As (range <0.001-8840 ng/g) and Se (290-47600 ng/g) were higher in WA than Taiwan (As Taiwan median: 500 ng/g, WA median: 1660 ng/g; Se Taiwan: 5490 ng/g, Se WA: 23700 ng/g). Nevertheless, pollutant concentrations in a subset of individuals may exceed sublethal effect thresholds (As, Se and PFASs). Finally, we found no consistent differences in pollution among species and demonstrated no correlation between pollution and population trends, suggesting pollution is likely not a major driver for population declines of EAAF shorebirds. However, ongoing and locally heavy environmental degradation and exposure to other contaminants not investigated here, such as POPs, warrants continued consideration when managing EAAF shorebird populations.

Combined exposure to multiple metals on abdominal aortic calcification: results from the NHANES study

Exposure to metals increases the risk of many diseases and has become a public health concern. However, few studies have focused on the effect of metal on abdominal aortic calcification (AAC), especially the combined effects of metal mixtures. In this study, we aim to investigate the combined effect of metals on AAC risk and determine the key components in the multiple metals. We tried to investigate the relationship between multiple metal exposure and AAC risk. Fourteen urinary metals were analyzed with five statistical models as follows: generalized linear regression, weighted quantile sum regression (WQS), quantile g-computation (Qgcomp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models. A total of 838 participants were involved, of whom 241 (28.8%) had AAC. After adjusting for covariates, in multiple metal exposure logistic regression, cadmium (Cd) (OR = 1.364, 95% CI = 1.035-1.797) was positively associated with AAC risk, while cobalt (Co) (OR = 0.631, 95% CI = 0.438-0.908) was negatively associated with AAC risk. A significant positive effect between multiple metal exposure and AAC risk was observed in WQS (OR = 2.090; 95% CI = 1.280-3.420, P < 0.01), Qgcomp (OR = 1.522, 95% CI = 1.012-2.290, P < 0.05), and BKMR models. It was found that the positive association may be driven primarily by Cd, lead (Pb), uranium (U), and tungsten (W). Subgroups analysis showed the association was more significant in participants with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, abdominal obesity, drinking, and smoking. Our study shows that exposure to multiple metals increases the risk of AAC in adults aged ≥ 40 years in the USA and that Cd, Pb, U, and W are the main contributors. The association is stronger in participants who are obese, smoker, or drinker.

Comparison of bio-beads combined with Pseudomonas edaphica and three phosphate materials for lead immobilization: Performance, mechanism and plant growth

Phosphate materials (PMs) combine with phosphate solubilizing bacteria play an essential roles in lead (Pb) immobilization, but their resulting ability to reduce Pb bioavailability may vary depending on PMs used. In this study, Pseudomonas edaphica GAU-665 and three PMs: tricalcium phosphate, calcium phytate and nano-hydroxyapatite were respectively encapsulated into bio-beads by sodium alginate, which immobilization efficiency of Pb2+ were 99.11%, 97.76% and 99.02% at initial Pb2+ concentration of 200 mg L-1, respectively. The Pb2+ immobilization performance of bio-beads under different conditions and their organic acids secreted were examined. Most Pb2+ was immobilized by bio-beads through combined functions of adsorption, precipitation, ion exchange and biomineralization, accompanied by the formation of more stable compounds such as Pb3(PO4)2, Pb5(PO4)3OH and Pb5(PO4)3Cl. Meanwhile, pot experimental results indicated that the inoculation of CPhy (calcium phytate) bio-beads with PSB have highest biomass and root growth of oat (Avena sativa L.) in Pb-stressed compared with CK, which increased the content of chlorophyll b (167.51%) in shoot. In addition, the CPhy bio-beads enhance the peroxidase, catalase activities and reduce the malondialdehyde content to alleviating lead physiological toxicity in oat, which reductions the Pb accumulation in shoot (52.06%) and root (81.04%), and increased the residual fraction of Pb by 165.80% in soil. These findings suggest the bio-beads combined with P. edaphica GAU-665 and calcium phytate is an efficient Pb immobilization material and provided feasible way to improve safety agricultural production and Pb-contaminated soil remediation.

Mechanism and effectiveness of enzymatically induced phosphate precipitation (EIPP) in stabilizing coexisting lead, zinc, and cadmium in tailings

Lead-zinc (Pb-Zn) tailings ponds carry the risk of multiple heavy metals (HMs) contamination and pile destabilization. This poses requirements for in-situ applicable, low-distribution, and effective stabilization/solidification (S/S) methods. For this, the novel enzymatically induced phosphate precipitation (EIPP) method was implemented in this study. Its mechanism and performance on stabilization of composite Pb, Zn, and cadmium (Cd) in tailings were explored and evaluated under typical erosion conditions for the first time. Results show that the EIPP stabilized HMs by chemically transforming the unstable carbonate-bound HMs to stable phosphate precipitates and by physically encapsulating tailings particles with newberyite precipitates. The stabilization effect on the three HMs was ranked as Pb > Zn > Cd. Comparing magnesium resources for the EIPP reactants, the EIPP utilizing Mg(CH3COO)2 was more effective at decontamination than MgCl2 because its special pre-activation and re-precipitation function enhanced the chemical transformation function of EIPP. The EIPP stabilization was confirmed to reduce simulated acid rain-leachable and bio-extractive HMs by about 90% and 60%, respectively. Under the prolonged acid attack, treated HMs were ultimately leached through the dissolution mechanism. Zn exhibited significant instability in highly acidic conditions (pH = 2.5-3.5), where its cumulative leaching toxicity after long-term dissolution warrants attention. Overall, EIPP presents a novel and effective strategy for on-site mitigation of composite HMs pollution.

Bioaccessibility of toxic heavy metals/metalloids in edible seaweeds: Exposure and health risk assessment

This study assesses the health risk due to heavy metals/metalloids (HMs/Ms) in edible seaweeds (Caulerpa racemosa, Kappaphycus alvarezii, and Ulva lactuca) through an in vitro bioaccessibility study. The percentage of bioabsorbed HMs/Ms in unprocessed and processed C. racemosa, U. lactuca, and K. alvarezii ranged from 3 % to 46 %, 3 % to 42 %, and 3 % to 40 %, respectively. The levels of HMs/Ms in seawater, sediment, and seaweeds were below the levels recommended by the European Commission (EC) and World Health Organization/Food and Agriculture Organization (WHO/FAO). The maximum accumulation of HMs/Ms was found during monsoons and post-monsoon seasons, and Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr, As, and Pb were predominant in all the samples. Tukey's post hoc test and t-test confirmed that thermal processing significantly reduced HMs/Ms in seaweeds. On the basis of the bioabsorption of HMs/Ms, the TTHQ values were found to be < 1, and the LCR values were within the acceptable limit (10-06 to 10-04), indicating no carcinogenic risks through seaweeds.

Chemical speciation and comprehensive risk assessment of metals in sediments from Nabq protectorate, the Red Sea using individual and synergistic indices

The study evaluates metal concentrations, distributions, contamination, risk, sources, fractionation, and mobility in Nabq Protectorate sediments, revealing a metal content order of Fe, Mn, Pb, Ni, and Cd. Metals are dominated by residual fractions, with Cd (83.70 %) > Ni (82.98 %) > Pb (80.96 %) > Fe (80.31 %) > Mn (76.65 %) reflecting the natural sources of investigated metals. Mn (23.35 %) was the most abundant mobile metal, and the sediments of the protectorate had low toxicity and moderate risk according to the synergistic indices (1 ≤ mRAC<10 and ERM; 5-10). The results from the proposed individual indices showed that Mn, Fe, and Pb are the most bioavailable (BIM 0.1-0.4), Cd, Mn, Ni, Fe, and Pb are of moderate mobility (MIM 0.1-0.4), and Cd is the most available (ARIM 5-10), with Cd posing the most ecological risk. The total hazard quotient (THQ) for child was greater than one, exposure to manganese through ingestion and skin contact while swimming may endanger human health.

Competitive encapsulation of multiple heavy metals by magnesium potassium phosphate cement: Hydration characteristics and leaching toxicity properties

Magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) is increasingly used in the solidification/stabilization (SS) of heavy metal (HM) pollutants. However, research on composite HM pollutants remains limited. In this study, four heavy metals (Pb/Zn/Cu/Cd) were individually and simultaneously introduced into MKPC systems with different magnesium/phosphorus (M/P) molar ratios. The introduction of HMs altered the extent of hydration and morphology of MgKPO4·6H2O. Among the MKPC pastes, those with M/P = 2 and 3 had the highest HM solidification efficiency and strength, respectively. The HM solidification efficiency of all specimens exceeded 99 %. In samples with M/P = 3, the codoping of four HMs slightly increased the M/P ratio, thereby increasing MgKPO4·6H2O content and enhancing strength. Pb could generate additional low-solubility precipitates, such as PbHPO4, Pb3 (PO4)2, Pb5 (OH) (PO4)3, and Pb (OH)2, which easily accumulated in pores and were encapsulated by MgKPO4·6H2O, leading to the highest solidification efficiency of Pb by MKPC. Pb and Cu could also form the composite phosphate products Pb2Cu (PO4)3 (OH)·4H2O, thus promoting the S/S effect of Cu. Therefore, the use of MKPC with M/P ratio of 2-3 for the S/S of complex pollutants containing Pb and Cu is a promising approach.

Monitoring of university wastewater within the sewage system and its performance evaluation through integrated constructed wetlands

Rapid increase in population and industrialization has not only improved the lifestyle but adversely affected the quality and availability of water leading to ample amount of wastewater generation. The major contribution towards wastewater production is from sewage. Regular monitoring and treatment of sewage water is necessary to conserve and enhance the quality of water. The present study focuses on monitoring of sewage water within the sewage system of a residential university. A total of 16 samples from different manholes were collected for physicochemical and heavy metals analysis and compared with final effluent collected from integrated constructed wetlands (ICWs) to assess its removal efficiency. The mean concentrations of influent and effluent were compared with national environmental quality standards (NEQS) for municipal discharge (pH 6-9, COD 150 mg/L, TSS 200 mg/L and TDS 3500 mg/L) and international agricultural reuse standards (IARS) (pH 6-8, COD <150 mg/L, TSS < 100 mg/L) respectively. Among all physicochemical parameters, influent values for chemical oxygen demand (COD) (169.56-258.36) mg/L exceeded the limit of NEQS for discharge into inland waters, whereas for total suspended solids (TSS) the concentration exceeded for discharge into STP (406 mg/L) and inland waters (202.33 mg/L). However, effluent concentrations for all the parameters were found within the permissible limit set by IARS. The removal efficiency for different parameters such as phosphate- phosphorus (PO43-P), COD, TSS, total dissolved solids (TDS) and total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) were 52, 53, 54, 35, and 36%, respectively. Heavy metal concentrations were compared with WHO guidelines among which lead (Pb) in effluent and chromium (Cr) in influent exceeded the limit (Pb 0.01 and Cr 0.05 mg/L). Interpolation results showed that zone 2 was highly contaminated in comparison to zone 1 & 3. Statistical analysis showed that correlation of physicochemical parameters and heavy metals was found significant (p < 0.05).

Lead exposure and its relationship with fecal cortisol levels in black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra)

Efficiently detecting early environmental threats to wildlife is vital for conservation. Beyond obvious dangers like habitat loss or deforestation, our study focuses on one of the most hazardous toxic metals for wildlife: lead (Pb). Pb is a widespread, cumulative, and insidious environmental pollutant that can trigger a wide range of physiological, biochemical, and behavioral disorders. In fact, Pb can cause permanent dysfunction of the major stress system, the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis. We analyzed Pb and cortisol concentrations in fecal samples from Alouatta pigra in southern Mexico. Fecal samples were collected across six sites categorized as free-ranging (n = 65; conserved and disturbed) and from captive animals (n = 58). Additionally, we collected soil samples (n = 35). We found that Pb was present in 28% of fecal samples and 83% of soil samples. There was a positive relation between fecal and soil Pb levels, and fecal Pb concentration was negatively associated with cortisol levels. However, the claim of Pb being a direct interference with HPA axis requires further investigation. Given our findings, assessing wildlife exposure can be a valuable tool for understanding potential Pb exposure levels in the environment and its possible implications for human health. It can also serve as an early warning system of these consequences.

Lead induced genotoxicity and hepatotoxicity in zebrafish (Danio rerio) at environmentally relevant concentration: Nrf2-Keap1 regulated stress response and expression of biomarker genes

Genotoxic and hepatotoxic potentials of Pb at an environmentally relevant concentration (5 ppm) in zebrafish were investigated in the present study. Erythrocytic nuclear abnormality tests revealed the increased frequencies of abnormal erythrocytes after Pb exposure, indicating a strong genotoxic potential of Pb. Multiple stress-related parameters were further evaluated in liver, the major detoxifying organ. Pb caused increased production of ROS, which in turn caused severe oxidative stress. As a result, lipid peroxidation was increased, whereas reduced glutathione level and catalase activity was decreased. Alterations in liver histoarchitecture also served as evidence of Pb-induced hepatotoxicity. Pb-induced ROS stress triggered upregulation of Nrf2, Nqo1, Ho1; downregulation of Keap1, and altered mRNA expressions of Mn-sod, Cu/Zn-sod, gpx1, cyp1a, ucp2 suggesting involvement of Nrf2-Keap1-ARE signaling in cellular defence. Nrf2-keap1 is a sensitive biomarker of Pb-induced ROS stress. Overexpression of Hsp70 and other genes in hepatocytes might help cell survival under oxidative stress generation.
