Abstract
The signature of selection is a crucial concept in evolutionary biology that refers to the pattern of genetic variation which arises in a population due to natural selection. In the context of climate adaptation, the signature of selection can reveal the genetic basis of adaptive traits that enable organisms to survive and thrive in changing environmental conditions. Breeds living in diverse agroecological zones exhibit genetic "footprints" within their genomes that mirror the influence of climate-induced selective pressures, subsequently impacting phenotypic variance. It is assumed that the genomes of animals residing in these regions have been altered through selection for various climatic adaptations. These regions are known as signatures of selection and can be identified using various summary statistics. We examined genotypic data from eight different cattle breeds (Gir, Hariana, Kankrej, Nelore, Ongole, Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, and Tharparkar) that are adapted to diverse regional climates. To identify selection signature regions in this investigation, we used four intra-population statistics: Tajima's D, CLR, iHS, and ROH. In this study, we utilized Bovine 50 K chip data and four genome scan techniques to assess the genetic regions of positive selection for high-temperature adaptation. We have also performed a genome-wide investigation of genetic diversity, inbreeding, and effective population size in our target dataset. We identified potential regions for selection that are likely to be caused by adverse climatic conditions. We observed many adaptation genes in several potential selection signature areas. These include genes like HSPB2, HSPB3, HSP20, HSP90AB1, HSF4, HSPA1B, CLPB, GAP43, MITF, and MCHR1 which have been reported in the cattle populations that live in varied climatic regions. The findings demonstrated that genes involved in disease resistance and thermotolerance were subjected to intense selection. The findings have implications for marker-assisted breeding, understanding the genetic landscape of climate-induced adaptation, putting breeding and conservation programs into action.

Abstract
Changthangi sheep, which inhabit the high-altitude regions of Ladakh, are known for their fine fiber production and are characterized by grey skin and either black or white coats. In contrast, Muzzafarnagri sheep from the plains of Uttar Pradesh produce coarse wool and have white skin and coats. We conducted comparative global gene expression profiling on four biological replicates of skin from each breed. Notably, our analysis identified 149 up-regulated genes and 2,139 down-regulated genes in Changthangi sheep compared to Muzzafarnagri sheep, with a p-adjusted value (padj) of ≤0.05 and a Log2 fold change of ≥1.5. Gene Ontology analysis of the up-regulated genes revealed an enrichment of terms related to melanin biosynthesis and developmental pigmentation. Additionally, enriched KEGG pathways included tyrosine metabolism and metabolic pathways. Among the melanogenesis-related genes that exhibited higher expression in Changthangi sheep were TYR, TYRP1, DCT, SLC45A2, PMEL, MLANA, and OCA2. These findings confirm melanin's role in both the animals' black coat color and UV protection at high-altitude. Furthermore, we observed more pronounced expression of genes related to fiber quality, namely KRTAP6, KRTAP7, KRTAP13, and KRTAP2, in the fine wool-producing sheep from Ladakh. The results of the RNA sequencing were validated using real-time PCR on 10 genes governing fiber quality and coat color, with ACTB and PPIB serving as reference genes. In conclusion, our comparative skin transcriptome analysis of Changthangi and Muzzafarnagri sheep sheds light on the genetic differences associated with distinct phenotypic traits and environmental adaptability, offering valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Climate change is the greatest threat to human health, with one of its direct effects being global warming and its impact on health. Currently, the world is experiencing an increase in the mean global temperature, but this increase affects different populations to different degrees. This is due to the fact that individual, demographic, geographical and social factors influence vulnerability and the capacity to adapt. Adaptation is the process of adjusting to the current or envisaged climate and its effects, with the aim of mitigating harm and taking advantage of the beneficial opportunities. There are different ways of measuring the effectiveness of adaptation, and the most representative indicator is via the time trend in the temperature-mortality relationship. Despite the rise in the number of studies that have examined the temperature-mortality relationship in recent years, there are very few that have analysed whether a particular population has or has not adapted to heat. We conducted a scoping review that met the following criteria, namely: including all persons; considering the heat adaptation concept; and covering the context of the impact of global warming on health and mortality. A total of 23 studies were selected. This review found very few studies targeting adaptation to heat in the human population and a limited number of countries carrying out research in this field, something that highlights the lack of research in this area. It is therefore crucial for political decision-makers to support studies that serve to enhance our comprehension of long-term adaptation to heat and its impact on the health of the human population.

Abstract
Global warming strongly impacts many organisms' development, distribution and population structure. This problem has attracted the attention of many scientists to understand and study its actual effects, especially on insects influenced by environmental temperatures. Aphids are a model for studies of the genetics and physiology of stress. Aphids are characterized by parthenogenetic reproduction, which limits the effects of recombination on evolutionary processes, and have shown resistance to various biotic and abiotic stresses. This study was based on the hypothesis that aphids have optimized, over time, genetic mechanisms capable to give them plasticity through genome modifications mediated by transposition. To understand and evaluate the effects of heat stress, the expression levels of transposases and methylases were analyzed in mothers and daughters. Our results show that after four days from the thermal shock, methylation decreases in both mothers and daughters, while transposition significantly increases in daughters, thus generating gene variability, essential for adaptation.

Abstract
Arsenic is a ubiquitous environmental toxi substance that affects human health. Compared to inorganic arsenicals, reduced organoarsenicals are more toxic, and some of them are recognized as antibiotics, such as methylarsenite [MAs(III)] and arsinothricin (2-amino-4-(hydroxymethylarsinoyl)butanoate, or AST). To date, organoarsenicals such as MAs(V) and roxarsone [Rox(V)] are still used in agriculture and animal husbandry. How bacteria deal with both inorganic and organoarsenic species is unclear. Recently, we identified an environmental isolate Mucilaginibacter rubeus P2 that has adapted to high arsenic and antinomy levels by triplicating an arsR-mrarsUBact-arsN-arsC-(arsRhp)-hp-acr3-mrme1Bact-mrme2Bactgene cluster. Heterologous expression of mrarsMBact, mrarsUBact, mrme1Bact and mrme2Bact, encoding putative arsenic resistance determinants, in the arsenic hypersensitive strain Escherichia coli AW3110 conferred resistance to As(III), As(V), MAs(III) or Rox(III). Our data suggest that metalloid exposure promotes plasticity in arsenic resistance systems, enhancing host organism adaptation to metalloid stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although research on the implementation of evidence-based psychological treatments (EBPTs) has advanced rapidly, research on the sustainment of implemented EBPTs remains limited. This is concerning, given that EBPT activities and benefits regularly decline post-implementation. To advance research on sustainment, the present protocol focuses on the third and final phase-the Sustainment Phase-of a hybrid type 2 cluster-randomized controlled trial investigating the implementation and sustainment of the Transdiagnostic Intervention for Sleep and Circadian Dysfunction (TranS-C) for patients with serious mental illness and sleep and circadian problems in community mental health centers (CMHCs). Prior to the first two phases of the trial-the Implementation Phase and Train-the-Trainer Phase-TranS-C was adapted to fit the CMHC context. Then, 10 CMHCs were cluster-randomized to implement Standard or Adapted TranS-C via facilitation and train-the-trainer. The primary goal of the Sustainment Phase is to investigate whether adapting TranS-C to fit the CMHC context predicts improved sustainment outcomes. METHODS Data collection for the Sustainment Phase will commence at least three months after implementation efforts in partnering CMHCs have ended and may continue for up to one year. CMHC providers will be recruited to complete surveys (N = 154) and a semi-structured interview (N = 40) on sustainment outcomes and mechanisms. Aim 1 is to report the sustainment outcomes of TranS-C. Aim 2 is to evaluate whether manipulating EBPT fit to context (i.e., Standard versus Adapted TranS-C) predicts sustainment outcomes. Aim 3 is to test whether provider perceptions of fit mediate the relation between treatment condition (i.e., Standard versus Adapted TranS-C) and sustainment outcomes. Mixed methods will be used to analyze the data. DISCUSSION The present study seeks to advance our understanding of sustainment predictors, mechanisms, and outcomes by investigating (a) whether the implementation strategy of adapting an EBPT (i.e., TranS-C) to the CMHC context predicts improved sustainment outcomes and (b) whether this relation is mediated by improved provider perceptions of treatment fit. Abstract
BACKGROUND Predicting the adaptability of forest tree populations under future climates requires a better knowledge of both the adaptive significance and evolvability of measurable key traits. Phenotypic plasticity, standing genetic variation and degree of phenotypic integration shape the actual and future population genetic structure, but empirical estimations in forest tree species are still extremely scarce. We analysed 11 maritime pine populations covering the distribution range of the species (119 families and 8 trees/family, ca. 1300 trees) in a common garden experiment planted at two sites with contrasting productivity. We used plant height as a surrogate of fitness and measured five traits (mean and plasticity of carbon isotope discrimination, specific leaf area, needle biomass, Phenology growth index) related to four different strategies (acquisitive economics, photosynthetic organ size, growth allocation and avoidance of water stress). RESULTS Estimated values of additive genetic variation would allow adaptation of the populations to future environmental conditions. Overall phenotypic integration and selection gradients were higher at the high productivity site, while phenotypic integration within populations was higher at the low productivity site. Response to selection was related mainly to photosynthetic organ size and drought-avoidance mechanisms rather than to water use efficiency. Phenotypic plasticity of water use efficiency could be maladaptive, resulting from selection for height growth. CONCLUSIONS Contrary to the expectations in a drought tolerant species, our study suggests that variation in traits related to photosynthetic organ size and acquisitive investment of resources drive phenotypic selection across and within maritime pine populations. Both genetic variation and evolvability of key adaptive traits were considerably high, including plasticity of water use efficiency. These characteristics would enable a relatively fast micro-evolution of populations in response to the ongoing climate changes. Moreover, differentiation among populations in the studied traits would increase under the expected more productive future Atlantic conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We analyze the forest carbon stock development following the recent historically unprecedented dieback of coniferous stands in the Czech Republic. The drought-induced bark-beetle infestation resulted in record-high sanitary logging and total harvest more than doubled from the previous period. It turned Czech forestry from a long-term carbon sink offsetting about 6% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions since 1990 to a significant source of CO2 emissions in recent years (2018-2021). In 2020, the forestry sector contributed nearly 10% to the country's overall GHG emissions. Using the nationally calibrated Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector (CBM-CFS3) at a regional (NUTS3) spatial resolution, we analyzed four scenarios of forest carbon stock development until 2070. Two critical points arise: the short-term prognosis for reducing current emissions from forestry and the implementation of adaptive forest management focused on tree species change and sustained carbon accumulation. RESULTS This study used four different spruce forest dieback scenarios to assess the impact of adaptive forest management on the forest carbon stock change and CO2 emissions, tree species composition, harvest possibilities, and forest structure in response to the recent unprecedented calamitous dieback in the Czech Republic. The model analysis indicates that Czech forestry may stabilize by 2025 Subsequently, it may become a sustained sink of about 3 Mt CO2 eq./year (excluding the contribution of harvested wood products), while enhancing forest resilience by the gradual implementation of adaptation measures. The speed of adaptation is linked to harvest intensity and severity of the current calamity. Under the pessimistic Black scenario, the proportion of spruce stands declines from the current 43-20% by 2070, in favor of more suited tree species such as fir and broadleaves. These species would also constitute over 50% of the harvest potential, increasingly contributing to harvest levels like those generated by Czech forestry prior to the current calamity. The standing stock would only be recovered in 50 years under the optimistic Green scenario. CONCLUSION The results show progress of adaptive management by implementing tree species change and quantify the expected harvest and mitigation potential in Czech forestry until 2070.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to examine the relationship between nursing students' perceived parental child-rearing attitude, ego identity, and college adjustment in Korea and explore factors that influence college adjustment. METHODS This study surveyed 224 nursing students enrolled in universities located in two regions within South Korea. Data were collected from October 14 to November 31, 2019. Perceived parental child-rearing attitude (paternal emotional warmth, paternal rejection, paternal overprotection, maternal emotional warmth, maternal rejection, and maternal overprotection) and ego identity of nursing students were used as independent variables on college adjustment. Collected data were subjected to correlation analysis using SPSS version 26.0 for Windows. Further, regression analysis was performed on the influence of parental child-rearing attitude and ego identity on college adjustment. RESULTS Among the parental child-rearing attitudes, paternal emotional warmth (r = .30, p < .001), maternal emotional warmth (r = .38, p < .001), and ego identity (r = .71, p < .001) were positively correlated with nursing students' college adjustment, whereas maternal rejection was negatively correlated with ego identity (r = - .28, p < .001) and college adjustment (r = - .15, p = .025). Regression analysis of the effects of nursing students' perceived parental child-rearing attitude and ego identity on college adjustment, with grade as a control variable, revealed that ego identity (p < .001) had a significant effect on college adjustment, and the higher the ego identity (β = 0.712), the higher the college adjustment. Further, the explanatory power of explaining college adjustment was high at 49.9%. CONCLUSIONS The nursing students' perceived paternal emotional warmth, maternal emotional warmth, and ego identity were positively correlated with college adjustment. Additionally, ego identity was found as the influencing factor in Korean nursing students' college adjustment. Therefore, programs to strengthen ego identity should be developed and implemented for college adjustment among nursing students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES There have been growing concerns that social distancing and stay-at-home mandates have exacerbated loneliness for older people. Empirical evidence about older people's experiences of loneliness and COVID-19 have quantified this phenomena without considering how older people themselves define and understand loneliness. This paper explores how older New Zealanders conceptualized and experienced loneliness under 'lockdown' stay-at-home measures. METHODS This multi-methods qualitative study combines data from letters (n = 870) and interviews (n = 44) collected from 914 people aged over 60 and living in Aotearoa, New Zealand during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a reflexive thematic analysis to conceptualise this data. FINDINGS We identify three interconnected ways in which older people conceptualised and experienced loneliness: (1) feeling disconnected relating to lack of emotional closeness to another often resulting from being physically separated from others and not being able to touch; (2) feeling imprisoned relating to separation from preferred identities and activities and was frequently associated with boredom and frustration; and (3) feeling neglected which often related to feeling let down by generalised and idealised forms of support, such as one's neighbourhood and health care system. DISCUSSION Older New Zealanders experienced lockdown loneliness in three interconnected ways rather than as a stable and homogenous experience. Māori, Pacific, Asian and New Zealand European older people often discussed loneliness in different ways; attesting to loneliness being a culturally-mediated concept shaped by expectations around desirable social interaction. We conclude the paper with implications for research and policy.

Abstract
Aim The aim of this study is to investigate the adaptation of caregivers of individuals on mechanical ventilation (MV) at home to their caregiver role. Study design The phenomenological research method, one of the qualitative research methods, was employed in the study. Materials and methods The sample consisted of 21 individuals who agreed to participate in the research. Necessary legal permissions were obtained to conduct the study. Results The data were analyzed according to the Roy adaptation model (RAM). Accordingly, the domains of the RAM were expressed with the following themes: Physiologic domain: The effects of care on the caregiver (reluctance toward self-care, psychological fatigue, insomnia, and limitation of social life); Self-concept domain: Supportive situations (trust in God and spiritual practices) and non-supportive situations (fear of losing and self-blame); Role-function domain: Adaptation of the caregiver role (thinking no one else can give similar care) and maladaptation of the caregiver role (fear of failing to cope with suddenly emerging situations, failing to fulfill roles and responsibilities, and economic inadequacy); Interdependence domain: Receiving support (support of healthcare professionals and support of family members) and lack of support (inadequacy of health services and loneliness). Conclusion It was concluded that individuals who provided care for patients on MV experienced many difficulties and that these difficulties increased their care burden and made it difficult to adapt to their caregiving roles. Abstract
This review is the final contribution to a four-part, historical series on human exercise physiology in thermally stressful conditions. The series opened with reminders of the principles governing heat exchange and an overview of our contemporary understanding of thermoregulation (Part 1). We then reviewed the development of physiological measurements (Part 2) used to reveal the autonomic processes at work during heat and cold stresses. Next, we re-examined thermal-stress tolerance and intolerance, and critiqued the indices of thermal stress and strain (Part 3). Herein, we describe the evolutionary steps that endowed humans with a unique potential to tolerate endurance activity in the heat, and we examine how those attributes can be enhanced during thermal adaptation. The first of our ancestors to qualify as an athlete was Homo erectus, who were hairless, sweating specialists with eccrine sweat glands covering almost their entire body surface. Homo sapiens were skilful behavioural thermoregulators, which preserved their resource-wasteful, autonomic thermoeffectors (shivering and sweating) for more stressful encounters. Following emigration, they regularly experienced heat and cold stress, to which they acclimatised and developed less powerful (habituated) effector responses when those stresses were re-encountered. We critique hypotheses that linked thermoregulatory differences to ancestry. By exploring short-term heat and cold acclimation, we reveal sweat hypersecretion and powerful shivering to be protective, transitional stages en route to more complete thermal adaptation (habituation). To conclude this historical series, we examine some of the concepts and hypotheses of thermoregulation during exercise that did not withstand the tests of time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke is a leading cause of disability for persons with stroke (PWS). Difficulty coping with long-term stress for PWS and their caregivers (CG) contributes to their poor health. Variations of chronic-disease self-management programs (CDSMPs) have reduced long-term stress in PWS and CGs. CDSMPs include training for decision-making, problem-solving, resource utilization, peer support, developing a patient-provider relationship, and environmental support. OBJECTIVE This study examined whether a user-designed stroke camp addressed CDSMP domains, used consistent activities, and decreased stress in PWS and CG. METHODS This open cohort survey study followed STROBE guidelines and assessed stress at four timepoints: 1 week before camp, immediately before camp, immediately after camp, and 1 month after camp. Mixed-model analysis examined changes in stress from the two baseline time points to the two post-camp time points. The research team reviewed documents and survey responses to assess activities described in camp documents and CDSMP domains across camps. POPULATION PWS and CG who attended a camp in 2019. The PWS sample (n = 40) included50% males, aged 1-41-years post stroke, 60% with ischemic, one-third with aphasia, and 37.5% with moderate-severe impairment. CG sample (n = 24) was 60.8% female, aged 65.5 years, and had 7.4 years CG experience. RESULTS Stress decreased significantly in PWS (Cohen's d = -0.61) and CGs (Cohen's d = -0.87) from pre- to post-camp. Activities addressing all but one CDSMP domains were evident across camps. CONCLUSIONS Stroke camp is a novel model that addresses CDSMP domains, which may reduce stress in PWS and CG. Larger, controlled studies are warranted.

Abstract
Geographic range limits of species are often a reflection of their ecological niche limits. In many organisms, important niche limits that coincide with distribution limits are warm and warm-dry conditions. We investigated the effects of heat and drought, as they can occur at the warm end of distribution. In a greenhouse experiment, we raised North American Arabidopsis lyrata from the centre of its distribution as well as from low- and high-latitude limits under average and extreme conditions. We assessed plant growth and development, as well as leaf and root functional traits, and tested for a decline in performance and selection acting on growth, leaf, and root traits. Drought and heat, when applied alone, lowered plant performance, while combined stress caused synergistically negative effects. Plants from high latitudes did not survive under combined stress, whereas plants originating from central and low latitudes had low to moderate survival, indicating divergent adaptation. Traits positively associated with survival under drought, with or without heat, were delayed and slowed growth, though plastic responses in these traits were generally antagonistic to the direction of selection. In line, higher tolerance of stress in southern populations did not involve aspects of growth but rather a higher root-to-shoot ratio and thinner leaves. In conclusion, combined heat and drought, as can occur at southern range edges and presumably more so under global change, seriously impede the long-term persistence of A. lyrata, even though they impose selection and populations may adapt, though under likely interference by considerable maladaptive plasticity.

Abstract
The sulfur oxidation kinetics of an industrial strain of Acidithiobacillus caldus (At. caldus) cultured on elemental sulfur was explored in batch experiments in the absence and presence of thiocyanate (SCN-), a toxin inherent within cyanidation tailings wastewater. The Contois rate expression accurately described At. caldus sulfate generation (R2 > 0.93) and microbial growth (R2 > 0.87). For a culture maintained at 45 °C a maximum specific growth rate (μmax) of 0.105 h-1, sulfate yield from biomass (Ypx) of 4.8 × 10-9 mg SO42-.cell-1, and Contois affinity coefficient (Kx) of 1.56 × 10-8 mg S.cell-1 were established. The presence of SCN- (0 mg/L - 20 mg/L) in the bulk solution inhibited the microbial system competitively. Moreover, SCN- impeded microbial growth differentially; the rate expression was therefore partitioned with respect to SCN- concentration and inhibition constants (Ki) were determined for each region. Adaptation to discrete concentrations of SCN- (1 mg/L and 20 mg/L) improved SCN- tolerance in At. caldus; however, adapted strains exhibited reduced sulfur oxidation potential when cultured under thiocyanate-free conditions relative to the non-adapted control strain. To describe the adapted systems accurately, the Contois affinity coefficient (Kx) was revised to reflect the suspected metabolic decline. The derived Kx values increased in magnitude and affirmed an innate reduction in microbial substrate affinity or substrate adsorption capacity. Inclusion of these updated Kx constants within the rate equation suitably represented the experimental data for both adapted At. caldus strains with R2 > 0.94. Furthermore, the impact of adaptation on the inhibition kinetics and inhibition mechanism associated with SCN- exposure were reviewed. Thiocyanate inhibited sulfur oxidation non-competitively in the adapted strains, and the shift in inhibition mechanism may be attributed to the compromised metabolic state following adaptation.

Abstract
Species distributed across a wide elevation range have broad environmental tolerance and adopt specific adaptation strategies to cope with varying climatic conditions. The aim of this study is to understand the patterns of variation in leaf eco-physiological traits that are related to the adaptation of species with a wide distribution in different climatic conditions. We studied the variability in eco-physiological traits of two co-occurring species of Western Himalaya (Rumex nepalensis and Taraxacum officinale), along elevational gradients. We conducted our study in elevations ranging from 1000 to 4000 m a.s.l. in three transects separated in an eco-region spanning 2.5° latitudes and 2.3° longitudes in the Western Himalaya. We hypothesized substantial variation in eco-physiological traits, especially increased net rate of photosynthesis (PN), Rubisco specific activity (RSA), and biochemicals at higher elevations, enabling species to adapt to varying environmental conditions. Therefore, the photosynthetic measurements along with leaf sampling were carried out during the months of June-August and the variations in photosynthetic performance and other leaf traits were assessed. Data was analyzed using a linear mixed effect model with 'species,' 'elevation' as fixed and 'transect' as random factor. Elevation had a significant effect on majority of traits. It was found that PN and maximum carboxylation rate of Rubisco (Vcmax) have unimodal or declining trend along increasing elevations. High RSA was observed at higher elevations in all the three transects. Trends for biochemical traits such as total soluble sugars, total soluble proteins, proline, and total phenolics content suggested an increase in these traits for the survival of plants in harsh environments of higher elevations. Our study reveals that although there is considerable variation in the eco-physiological traits of the two species across elevational gradients of different transects, there are certain similarities in the patterns that depict their high adaptive potential in varying climatic conditions.

Abstract
From before we are born, throughout development, adulthood, and aging, we are immersed in a multisensory world. At each of these stages, our sensory cues are constantly changing, due to body, brain, and environmental changes. While integration of information from our different sensory cues improves precision, this only improves accuracy if the underlying cues are unbiased. Thus, multisensory calibration is a vital and ongoing process. To meet this grand challenge, our brains have evolved a variety of mechanisms. First, in response to a systematic discrepancy between sensory cues (without external feedback) the cues calibrate one another (unsupervised calibration). Second, multisensory function is calibrated to external feedback (supervised calibration). These two mechanisms superimpose. While the former likely reflects a lower level mechanism, the latter likely reflects a higher level cognitive mechanism. Indeed, neural correlates of supervised multisensory calibration in monkeys were found in higher level multisensory cortical area VIP, but not in the relatively lower level multisensory area MSTd. In addition, even without a cue discrepancy (e.g., when experiencing stimuli from different sensory cues in series) the brain monitors supra-modal statistics of events in the environment and adapts perception cross-modally. This too comprises a variety of mechanisms, including confirmation bias to prior choices, and lower level cross-sensory adaptation. Further research into the neuronal underpinnings of the broad and diverse functions of multisensory calibration, with improved synthesis of theories is needed to attain a more comprehensive understanding of multisensory brain function.

Abstract
Heat is identified as a key climate risk in Europe. Vulnerability to heat can be aggravated by enhanced exposure (e.g., urban heat island), individual susceptibility (e.g., age, income), and adaptive capacity (e.g., home ownership, presence of vegetation). We investigated the spatial and temporal patterns of the environmental and social drivers of vulnerability to heat in the Paris region, France, over the 2000-2020 period, and their association with mortality (restricted to 2000-2017). Daily temperatures were modeled for the 5265 IRIS of the Paris region for 2000-2020. Annual land use and socioeconomic data were collected for each IRIS. They were used to identify a priori five classes of heat-vulnerable areas based on a cluster analysis. The temperature-mortality relationship was investigated using a time-series approach stratified by clusters of vulnerability. The Paris region exhibited a strong urban heat island effect, with a marked shift in temperature distributions after 2015. The clustering suggested that the most heat-vulnerable IRIS in the Paris region have a high or very high exposure to temperature in a highly urbanized environment with little vegetation, but are not systematically associated with social deprivation. A similar J-shape temperature-mortality relationship was observed in the five clusters. Between 2000 and 2017, around 8000 deaths were attributable to heat, 5600 of which were observed in the most vulnerable clusters. Vulnerability assessments based on geographical indicators are key tools for urban planners and decision-makers. They complement the knowledge about individual risk factors but should be further evaluated through interdisciplinary collaborations.

Abstract
Purpose The aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Pre-sleep Arousal Scale (PSAS), which measures pre-sleep arousal, a significant predictor of insomnia symptoms. Methods 651 participants were recruited via social media and the Internet. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted in the total sample (65.28% females; Mage1 = 28.09 ± 14.00). Convergent, divergent, incremental, and known-groups validity and internal consistency coefficients were assessed in a subsample of 556 participants (62.77% females; Mage2 = 29.25 ± 14.81). A second separate sample of 88 participants (80.68% females; Mage3 = 22.19 ± 4.98) was used to evaluate three-week test-retest reliability. Results The results of factor analysis confirmed the two-factor structure of the Turkish PSAS with cognitive (PSAS-C) and somatic (PSAS-S), similar to the original scale. The correlations of the PSAS with convergent and divergent measures showed that the Turkish form had good convergent and acceptable divergent validity. PSAS-C and PSAS-S were able to explain an 18% additional variance in insomnia severity beyond depression and anxiety, an 18% additional variance in depression beyond insomnia severity, and a 35% additional variance in anxiety beyond insomnia severity. Moreover, insomnia patients had significantly higher PSAS-C and PSAS-S scores than good sleepers. Finally, the PSAS, PSAS-C, and PSAS-S had satisfactory internal consistency coefficients (α = 0.92, 0.91, and 0.86, respectively) and three-week test-retest correlations (ICC = 0.82, 0.82, and 0.71, respectively). Conclusion The Turkish form of the PSAS was a valid and reliable measure of pre-sleep arousal and can be utilized in sleep studies. Abstract
Diaspora communities are a growing source of external assistance and resources to meet unmet needs and to strengthen existing health systems in their home countries. Although a growing number of articles have been published in this realm, very few have looked at diaspora communities' role and the place translocal communities give to health (care) in the various remittance dynamics, whilst including power relationships and environmental change. This article examines the motivations and practices through which Senegalese diasporas engage with the health system in their origin country and what barriers they face in their interventions. The results of the migration-environment-health nexus are critically discussed with a political ecology approach. We found that households and villages with a critical number of members abroad, and with strong political and/or international networks, are better off and less exposed to health risks in the face of adverse extreme climate impacts.

Abstract
Establishing a mapping between (from and to) the functionality of interest and the underlying network structure (design principles) remains a crucial step toward understanding and design of bio-systems. Perfect adaptation is one such crucial functionality that enables every living organism to regulate its essential activities in the presence of external disturbances. Previous approaches to deducing the design principles for adaptation have either relied on computationally burdensome brute-force methods or rule-based design strategies detecting only a subset of all possible adaptive network structures. This chapter outlines a scalable and generalizable method inspired by systems theory that unravels an exhaustive set of adaptation-capable structures. We first use the well-known performance parameters to characterize perfect adaptation. These performance parameters are then mapped back to a few parameters (poles, zeros, gain) characteristic of the underlying dynamical system constituted by the rate equations. Therefore, the performance parameters evaluated for the scenario of perfect adaptation can be expressed as a set of precise mathematical conditions involving the system parameters. Finally, we use algebraic graph theory to translate these abstract mathematical conditions to certain structural requirements for adaptation. The proposed algorithm does not assume any particular dynamics and is applicable to networks of any size. Moreover, the results offer a significant advancement in the realm of understanding and designing complex biochemical networks.

Abstract
Based on analyzing the composing elements of the water governance regime in the Hirmand River Basin, Iran, this paper examines the factors that facilitate the emergence of Adaptive Governance in a Global South context. Although the literature provides valuable insights into the characteristics of a well-established Adaptive Governance regime in the context of the Global North, relatively little research has been conducted on Adaptive Governance's fostering factors in the states in the Global South. To address this gap, this study utilizes an analytical framework upon which the features of water governance regimes are assessed. A combination of primary and secondary qualitative data (survey research and document analysis) is used to evaluate the assessment framework, which aims to analyze the characteristics that enhance resilience to the imposed changes and disturbances in complex environmental and water systems. The analysis suggests that addressing scalar and sectoral tensions, well-functioning reflecting mechanisms, adaptable policies, and flexible financial mechanisms are vital requisites for the transition towards more adaptive forms of water governance. The results also propose that the formal water governance system in the region has felt the urgency to adapt to new circumstances; however, unlike cases from the Global North, it lacks the required agility to escape from the rigidity trap it finds itself in.

Abstract
Vibrio species are motile gram-negative bacteria commonly found in aquatic environments. Vibrio species include pathogenic as well as non-pathogenic strains. Pathogenic Vibrio species have been reported in invertebrates and humans, whereas non-pathogenic strains are involved in symbiotic relationships with their eukaryotic hosts. These bacteria are also able to adapt to fluctuations in temperature, salinity, and pH, in addition to oxidative stress, and osmotic pressure in aquatic ecosystems. Moreover, they have also developed protective mechanisms against the immune systems of their hosts. Vibrio species accomplish adaptation to changing environments outside or inside the host by altering their gene expression profiles. To this end, several sigma factors specifically regulate gene expression, particularly under stressful environmental conditions. Moreover, other sigma factors are associated with biofilm formation and virulence as well. This review discusses different types of sigma and anti-sigma factors of Vibrio species involved in virulence and regulation of gene expression upon changes in environmental conditions. The evolutionary relationships between sigma factors with various physiological roles in Vibrio species are also discussed extensively.

Abstract
The comprehensive assessment of the long-term impacts of constant exposure to pollutants on wildlife populations remains a relatively unexplored area of ecological risk assessment. Empirical evidence to suggest that multigenerational exposure affects the susceptibility of organisms is scarce, and the underlying mechanisms in the natural environment have yet to be fully understood. In this study, we first examined the arthropod candidate species, Gammarus roeselii that - unlike closely related species - commonly occurs in many contaminated river systems of Central Europe. This makes it a suitable study organism to investigate the development of tolerances and phenotypic adaptations along pollution gradients. In a 96-h acute toxicity assay with the neonicotinoid thiacloprid, we indeed observed a successive increase in tolerance in populations coming from contaminated regions. This was accompanied by a certain phenotypic change, with increased investment into reproduction. To address the question of whether these changes are plastic or emerged from longer lasting evolutionary processes, we conducted a multigeneration experiment in the second part of our study. Here, we used closely-related Hyalella azteca and pre-exposed them for multiple generations to sublethal concentrations of thiacloprid in a semi-static design (one week renewal of media containing 0.1 or 1.0 µg/L thiacloprid). The pre-exposed individuals were then used in acute toxicity assays to see how quickly such adaptive responses can develop. Over only two generations, the tolerance to the neonicotinoid almost doubled, suggesting developmental plasticity as a plausible mechanism for the rapid adaptive response to strong selection factors such as neonicotinoid insecticides. It remains to be discovered whether the plasticity of rapidly developed tolerance is species-specific and explains why closely related species - which may not have comparable adaptive response capabilities - disappear in polluted habitats. Overall, our findings highlight the neglected role of developmental plasticity during short- and long-term exposure of natural populations to pollution. Moreover, our results show that even pollutant levels seven times lower than concentrations found in the study region have a clear impact on the developmental trajectories of non-target species.

Abstract
When observing a simple visual scene such as an array of dots, observers can easily and automatically extract their number. How does our visual system accomplish this? We investigate the role of specific spatial frequencies to the encoding of number through cross-adaptation. In two experiments, observers were peripherally adapted to six randomly generated sinusoidal gratings varying from relatively low-spatial frequency (M = 0.44 c/deg) to relatively high-spatial frequency (M = 5.88 c/deg). Subsequently, observers judged which side of the screen had a higher number of dots. We found a strong number-adaptation effect to low-spatial frequency gratings (i.e., participants significantly underestimated the number of dots on the adapted side) but a significantly reduced adaptation effect for high-spatial frequency gratings. Various control conditions demonstrate that these effects are not due to a generic response bias for the adapted side, nor moderated by dot size or spacing effects. In a third experiment, we observed no cross-adaptation for centrally presented gratings. Our results show that observers' peripheral number perception can be adapted even with stimuli lacking any numeric or segmented object information and that low spatial frequencies adapt peripheral number perception more than high ones. Together, our results are consistent with recent number perception models that suggest a key role for spatial frequency in the extraction of number from the visual signal (e.g., Paul, Ackooij, Ten Cate, & Harvey, 2022), but additionally suggest that some spatial frequencies - especially in the low range and in the periphery - may be weighted more by the visual system when estimating number. We argue that the cross-adaptation paradigm is also a useful methodology for discovering the primitives of visual number encoding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prolonged use of computer devices can have adverse health effects, but these can be mitigated by setting up computer workstations according to ergonomic principles. The Computer Workstation Ergonomics: Self-Assessment Checklist can guide workers in implementing these principles. However, the checklist is only available in English, which may reduce the accuracy of the instrument when used by non-English speakers, including Indonesians. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to cross-culturally adapt the Computer Workstation Ergonomics: Self-Assessment Checklist for use in Indonesia. Additionally, a reliability assessment was conducted on the adapted checklist. METHODS This study followed a six-stage cross-cultural adaptation process, including translation, synthesis of translation, back translation, expert committee review, pretesting, and documentation submission. The final version of the adapted checklist underwent testing for intra-rater reliability, inter-rater reliability, and internal consistency. RESULTS The cross-cultural adaptation process resulted in an Indonesian version of the Computer Workstation Ergonomics: Self-Assessment Checklist. Furthermore, the Krippendorff's alpha values for the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the adapted checklist ranged from 0.59 to 0.78 (mean = 0.70) and 0.20 to 0.82 (mean = 0.56), respectively. CONCLUSION The study produced an Indonesian version of the Computer Workstation Ergonomics: Self-Assessment Checklist that had an adequate reliability. The adapted checklist can serve as a practical tool for evaluating and improving computer workstations in Indonesia.

Abstract
Exercise-induced adaptation is achieved by altering the epigenetic landscape of the entire genome leading to the expression of genes involved in various processes including regulatory, metabolic, adaptive, immune, and myogenic functions. Clinical and experimental data suggest that the methylation pattern/levels of promoter/enhancer is not linearly correlated with gene expression and proteome levels during physical activity implying a level of complexity and interplay with other regulatory modulators. It has been shown that a higher level of physical fitness is associated with a slower DNA methylation-based aging clock. There is strong evidence supporting exercise-induced ROS being a key regulatory mediator through overlapping events, both as signaling entities and through oxidative modifications to various protein mediators and DNA molecules. ROS generated by physical activity shapes epigenome both directly and indirectly, a complexity we are beginning to unravel within the epigenetic arrangement. Oxidative modification of guanine to 8-oxoguanine is a non-genotoxic alteration, does not distort DNA helix and serves as an epigenetic-like mark. The reader and eraser of oxidized guanine is the 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase 1, contributing to changes in gene expression. In fact, it can modulate methylation patterns of promoters/enhancers consequently leading to multiple phenotypic changes. Here, we provide evidence and discuss the potential roles of exercise-induced ROS in altering cytosine methylation patterns during muscle adaptation processes.

Abstract
Verrucomicrobiota is widely distributed in various habitats including insect guts. It was found to be prevalent in almost all investigated termite guts, whereas their physiological functions are not very clear. In this study we characterized the physiological and genomic properties of Verrucomicrobiota strain TSB47T isolated from Reticulitermes chinensis. The cells of strain TSB47T were Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, and non-spore-forming coccoid with one or more warts. 16S rRNA gene analysis showed that the closest relatives of strain TSB47T were Opitutaceae strain TAV1 and Ereboglobus luteus Ho45T (98.3% and 95.4% sequence similarity, respectively). Whole genome analysis revealed that there are a large number of glycoside hydrolase genes, amino acid metabolism genes, complete Mo-Fe nitrogenase and Fe-Fe nitrogenase gene clusters, as well as cbb3-type cytochrome oxidase gene in the genome of strain TSB47T. Strain TSB47T grows well under anaerobic and microaerophilic conditions with a strong tolerance to oxygen. Physiological and genomic characters of strain TSB47T indicated its high adaptability to termite gut ecosystem. Based on phenotypic and phylogenetic evidence, we suggest strain TSB47T as the type species of a novel genus in the family Opitutaceae, for which the name Termitidicoccus mucosus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TSB47T (CCTCC AB2022447T; KCTC 102044T).

Abstract
End-product inhibition in pH-controlled batch cultures, is the major limiting factor for bacterial biomass formation in the starter culture industry as well as in many other biotechnological processes. Adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) has emerged over the past decades as a powerful tool for phenotype optimization, but none of the existing ALE methods could select for improved end-product resistance. Therefore, we developed the stressostat (STress Resistance Evolution in Substrate Surplus) as a novel continuous ALE method. Stressostat cultivation applies end-product concentrations as constant evolutionary pressure on microorganisms in the presence of substrate surplus. In this study, we improved the lactate resistance of Lactococcus lactis FM03P in 35 days of stressostat cultivations. The lactate concentrations increased over time from 530 to 675 mM, indicating the successful selection for variants with improved lactate resistance. Thirty-four variants were isolated and grouped into four clusters based on their growth rates at high lactate concentrations. In the high-throughput screening without pH control, most isolated variants could grow at high lactate concentrations (870-928 mM), while the wild type was completely inhibited. The variants grew slower than wild type at low lactate media indicating possible evolutionary trade-off. However, in pH-controlled batch cultivations, most variants produced more biomass than the wild type. In conclusion, stressostat cultivation is a valuable method to obtain L. lactis variants with improved end-product resistance and further characterization is needed to elucidate underlying resistance mechanisms and potential industrial applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, there is no Turkish assessment tool available for the evaluation of vocal tract discomfort. The objective of this study is to cross-cultural adaptation of the Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTDS) to Turkish and assess its validity and reliability. METHOD The study was conducted with a total of 214 participants, consisting of 121 individuals with voice disorders and 93 individuals without voice disorders. All participants completed the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), Voice-Related Quality of Life (VRQOL), and VTDS. To conduct a test-retest reliability assessment, the VTDS was administered again to 54 participants within 7-14 days. RESULTS The internal consistency of VTDS was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the scale was calculated at 0.964, while it was 0.922 for the frequency subscale and 0.930 for the severity subscale. It was found that there was a high degree of correlation (rho = 0.868, frequency rho = 0.847, severity rho = 0.875, P < 0.001) between the two administrations, indicating the reliability of the test-retest assessment. To assess the criterion validity of the scale, correlations between VTDS total scores and VHI and VRQOL scales were examined. Accordingly, it was found that there was a high degree of correlation between VTDS and VHI (rho = 0.631, frequency rho = 0.635, severity rho = 0.616, P < 0.001). It was also observed that there was a high degree of negative correlation between VTDS and VRQOL (rho = -0.701, frequency rho = -0.702, severity rho = -0.692, P < 0.001). It was assumed that there would be statistically significant differences in VTDS total scores among the diagnostic groups, and it was found that there was a significant difference between the two groups (U = 1095.000, z = -10.110, P < 0.001). These findings support the discriminative validity of VTDS. CONCLUSIONS The Turkish version of VTDS is a valid and reliable scale that can assess perceptible symptoms and sensations in the vocal tract in terms of both frequency and severity.

Abstract
MAIN CONCLUSION Xanthoria parietina survivability in Mars-like conditions was supported by water-lysis efficiency recovery and antioxidant content balancing with ROS production after 30 days of exposure. Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th. Fr. is a widespread lichen showing tolerance against air pollutants and UV-radiation. It has been tested under space-like and Mars-like conditions resulting in high recovery performances. Hereby, we aim to assess the mechanisms at the basis of the thalli resilience against multiple space stress factors. Living thalli of X. parietina were exposed to simulated Martian atmospheric conditions (Dark Mars) and UV radiation (Full Mars). Then, we monitored as vitality indicator the photosynthetic efficiency, assessed by in vivo chlorophyll emission fluorescence measurements (FM; FV/F0). The physiological defense was evaluated by analyzing the thalli antioxidant capacity. The drop of FM and FV/F0 immediately after the exposure indicated a reduction of photosynthesis. After 24 h from exposure, photosynthetic efficiency began to recover suggesting the occurrence of protective mechanisms. Antioxidant concentrations were higher during the exposure, only decreasing after 30 days. The recovery of photosynthetic efficiency in both treatments suggested a strong resilience by the photosynthetic apparatus against combined space stress factors, likely due to the boosted antioxidants at the beginning and their depletion at the end of the exposure. The overall results indicated that the production of antioxidants, along with the occurrence of photoprotection mechanisms, guarantee X. parietina survivability in Mars-like environment.

Abstract
Considering long-term population effects of chronic exposure to contaminants remains limited in ecological risk assessment. Field evidence that multigenerational exposure influences organisms' sensitivity is still scarce, and mechanisms have yet to be elucidated in the environmental context. This study focuses on the crustacean Gammarus fossarum, for which an increased tolerance to cadmium (Cd) has previously been reported in a naturally low-contaminated headwater stream. Our objectives were to investigate whether Cd tolerance is a common phenomenon in headwater populations, and to elucidate the nature of the tolerance and its intergenerational transmission. For this, we carried out an in-depth in situ characterization of Cd exposure (gammarids' caging) and levels of tolerance in nine populations on a regional scale, as well as laboratory maintenance and cross-breeding of contaminated and uncontaminated populations. Acute tolerance levels correlate positively with bioavailable Cd contamination levels among streams. The contaminated and non-contaminated populations differ about two-fold in sensitivity to Cd. Tolerance was found in all age classes of contaminated populations, it can be transiently lost during the year, and it was transmissible to offspring. In addition, tolerance levels dropped significantly when organisms were transferred to a Cd-free environment for two months. These organisms also ceased producing tolerant offspring, confirming a non-genetic transmission of Cd tolerance between generations. These findings support that Cd tolerance corresponds to non-genetic acclimation combined with transgenerational plasticity. Moreover, cross-breeding revealed that tolerance transmission to offspring is not limited to maternal effect. We suggest epigenetics as a plausible mechanism for the plasticity of Cd sensitivity observed in the field. Our results therefore highlight the neglected role of plasticity and non-genetic transmission of modified sensitivities during the long-term exposure of natural populations to environmental contamination.

Abstract
Seemingly unrelated traits often share the same underlying molecular mechanisms, potentially generating a pleiotropic relationship whereby selection shaping one trait can simultaneously compromise another. While such functional trade-offs are expected to influence evolutionary outcomes, their actual relevance in nature is masked by obscure links between genotype, phenotype, and fitness. Here, we describe functional trade-offs that likely govern a key adaptation and coevolutionary dynamics in a predator-prey system. Several garter snake (Thamnophis spp.) populations have evolved resistance to tetrodotoxin (TTX), a potent chemical defense in their prey, toxic newts (Taricha spp.). Snakes achieve TTX resistance through mutations occurring at toxin-binding sites in the pore of snake skeletal muscle voltage-gated sodium channels (NaV1.4). We hypothesized that these mutations impair basic NaV functions, producing molecular trade-offs that should ultimately scale up to compromised organismal performance. We investigate biophysical costs in two snake species with unique and independently evolved mutations that confer TTX resistance. We show electrophysiological evidence that skeletal muscle sodium channels encoded by toxin-resistant alleles are functionally compromised. Furthermore, skeletal muscles from snakes with resistance genotypes exhibit reduced mechanical performance. Lastly, modeling the molecular stability of these sodium channel variants partially explains the electrophysiological and muscle impairments. Ultimately, adaptive genetic changes favoring toxin resistance appear to negatively impact sodium channel function, skeletal muscle strength, and organismal performance. These functional trade-offs at the cellular and organ levels appear to underpin locomotor deficits observed in resistant snakes and may explain variation in the population-level success of toxin-resistant alleles across the landscape, ultimately shaping the trajectory of snake-newt coevolution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In-vitro data from a clinically well-known lithium disilicate ceramic reference was used to assess the expected performance of resin-based materials in implant dentistry. The purpose of the study was to compare the bond strength and marginal adaptation of nano-ceramic hybrid composite crowns cemented to stock cement-retained abutments to lithium disilicate crowns. METHODS Twenty abutment analogs were embedded into auto-polymerizing acrylic resin blocks. The blocks were divided into 2 groups according to the restorative crown material. The 2 groups were divided as follows: Resin nano-ceramic group and lithium disilicate group. Abutment analogs in both groups were scanned using a laboratory scanner, and the restorations were designed, manufactured, and cemented with resin cement over the corresponding group. All samples were tested for marginal adaptation and bond strength after storage for 24 hours at 37 °C in 100% humidity. Data were collected, tabulated, and statistically analysed using the appropriate tests. Normality was checked using Shapiro Wilk test and Q-Q plots. Data were normally distributed. Variables were presented using mean, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) and standard deviation in addition to median and Inter Quartile Range (IQR). Differences between groups regarding debonding forces was assessed using independent t test. Two Way ANOVA was performed to assess the effect of material and bonding on marginal gap. All tests were two tailed and p value was set at < 0.05. RESULTS Marginal gap and debonding force values were significantly different according to the type of material used (P < .05). Resin nano-ceramic crowns presented lower marginal gap values before (20.80 ± 8.87 μm) and after (52.11 ± 22.92 μm) bonding than lithium disilicate crowns. The debonding force value for resin nano-ceramic crowns (284.30 ± 26.44 N) was significantly higher than that for lithium disilicate crowns (253.30 ± 33.26 N). Adhesive failure mode was detected in all the specimens in both groups. CONCLUSIONS The type of material used for implant-supported cement-retained crowns had a statistically significant effect on marginal adaptation and bond strength. Resin nano-ceramic implant-supported cement-retained crowns had better marginal adaptation and higher bond strength than those manufactured using lithium disilicate.

Abstract
The "exposome" covers all disease determinants across a lifetime. Many exposome factors could induce epigenetic changes, especially in DNA methylation. Yet, the role of these modifications in disease development remains partly understood. Although the possible relationship among the exposome factors, epigenetic modifications, and health/disease has been investigated extensively, all previous studies start from the assumption that epigenetic changes are always detrimental to (or represent an adverse effect on) the health of the affected individual. We hereby propose a new approach to investigate these modifications, and their possible relation with human health, in the context of the exposome. Our hypothesis is based on the possibility that some environmentally-induced changes are plastic entities, responding physiologically to the environment to allow individual adaptation. Briefly, after evaluating the association between environmental exposure and the variation of a given biological parameter through regression models, we use the estimated regression function to predict values for each study subject. We then calculated the relative percent difference (PD) between the measured (i.e., observed) biological parameter and the predicted (i.e., expected) from the model. Notably, we have tested our hypothesis using two distinct models, specifically focusing on LINE-1 methylation and extracellular vesicles (EVs). We hypothesize that the greater the difference between the observed and the expected, the greater the inability of the subject to adapt to external stimuli.

Abstract
This paper argues that the project of a lifespan perspective in developmental psychology has not yet been systematically pursued. Overall, the number of age-specific papers far outweighs the number of lifespan approaches, and even approaches that focus on the lifespan as a whole are often restricted to adulthood. Further, there is a lack of approaches that examine cross-lifespan relationships. However, the lifespan perspective has brought with it a "processual turn" that suggests an examination of developmental regulatory processes that are either operative across the lifespan or develop across the lifespan. Accommodative adjustment of goals and evaluations in response to obstacles, loss, and threat is discussed as an example of such a process. Not only is it prototypical of efficacy and change of developmental regulation across the lifespan, but at the same time it makes clear that stability (e.g., of the self)-as a possible outcome of accommodation-is not an alternative to, but a variant of development. Explaining how accommodative adaptation changes, in turn, requires a broader perspective. For this purpose, an evolutionary approach to developmental psychology is proposed that not only views human development as a product of phylogenesis, but also applies the central concepts of the theory of evolution (adaptation and history) directly to ontogeny. The challenges, conditions, and limitations of such a theoretical application of adaptation to human development are discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aims to translate, adapt and validate a Spanish version of the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, Joint Replacement (KOOS, JR), including a reliability and validity analysis in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS This study conducted a prospective validation study following the six stages of the "Guidelines for the Process of Cross-Cultural Adaptation of Self-Report Measures". Psychometric testing was conducted in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Subjects answered the Spanish KOOS, JR (S-KOOS, JR) and a validated Spanish Oxford Knee Score (S-OKS). Retest was conducted at 10 days. Acceptability, floor and ceiling effect, internal consistency (Cronbach's α), reproducibility (mixed-effect model coefficient [MEMC]) and construct validity (Spearman's correlation; p = 0.05) were assessed. RESULTS Forty-one patients (mean age: 65.6 ± 5.39; 48.8% female) participated in the study. All patients (100%) answered both scores during the first assessment and 38 (92.7%) during the second assessment. All patient-reported outcomes measures were answered completely (100%). The S-KOOS, JR resulted in 100% acceptability when answered. There were no ceiling or floor effects detected. The Cronbach's α for the S-KOOS, JR was 0.927 and its MEMC was 0.852 (CI 95% 0.636-1.078). The Spearman's correlation between the S-KOOS, JR and the S-OKS was 0.711 (CI 0.345-0.608; p < 0.001) and 0.870 (CI 0.444-0.651; p < 0.001) for the first and second assessments, respectively. CONCLUSION The S-KOOS, JR has very high internal consistency and reproducibility, with a high correlation with the S-OKS; it is a reliable and valid instrument for characterising Spanish-speaking patients suffering from knee OA. Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of two different internal surface treatments, namely, the firing of feldspathic porcelain before or after zirconia sintering, on the marginal and internal adaptation of laminate veneers (LVs) made of high-translucent zirconia. A total of 33 zirconia LVs were fabricated using a CAD/CAM system and divided into three groups based on the internal surface treatment method: the pre-firing (PRE) group involved firing feldspathic porcelain before zirconia sintering, the post-firing (POS) group involved firing feldspathic porcelain after zirconia sintering, and the no treatment (NT) group involved no application of feldspathic porcelain. The adaptation of the LVs was measured using a silicone replica technique. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Steel-Dwass tests (α = .05). The POS group showed significantly higher marginal discrepancy values than the PRE group across all sites. The internal space values of the PRE groups were significantly lower than those of the NT group at all sites. The internal firing of feldspathic porcelain before zirconia sintering resulted in better marginal adaptation of the high-translucent zirconia LVs than the internal firing of feldspathic porcelain after zirconia sintering. The internal firing of feldspathic porcelain before zirconia sintering can achieve uniform internal adaptation of high-translucent zirconia LVs.

Abstract
PURPOSE Intuitive Eating (IE) is an approach to eating characterised by attunement to intrinsic cues, and using those cues to guide behaviours related to food and eating. Tylka and Kroon Van Diest's (2008) Intuitive Eating Scale (IES-2) is well-validated in adults, but not yet among early adolescents. The current study was designed to adapt and validate a version suited for use in early adolescence (IES-2-EA). METHODS Data collected from two independent samples of adolescents aged 11 to 13 (N = 471) were structurally examined using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), with a subsequent confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to confirm hypothesised model fit. Relationships between scores on the IES-2-EA and validated measures of actual-ideal body size discrepancy, body appreciation, interoceptive awareness, and psychological distress were also examined. RESULTS The adapted 17-item IES-2-EA had a three-factor structure with several key differences from the original version developed for adults. Moderate-to-strong correlations were found between scores on the IES-2-EA, body appreciation, interoceptive awareness, actual-ideal body size discrepancy, and psychological distress in the first sample of adolescents (n = 245). Secondary CFA showed good model fit in the second sample of adolescents (n = 226). CONCLUSION The IES-2-EA is well-suited to measure intuitive eating behaviour among early adolescents. The 17 items reflect a three-component structure similar to that seen in adults completing the IES-2. These early data suggest the adapted IES-2-EA has evidence of reliability and validity; it may be an effective measure for research and clinical use.

Abstract
There is a pressing need to prevent and address youth crime and violence owing to its prevalence, harms and cost to society. Interventions with proven effectiveness in doing this exist. Adopting and adapting them in new contexts is potentially cost-effective. However, more research is needed into how to make adaptations that enhance intervention implementation, effectiveness and maintenance in new settings. This article reports the pre-implementation adaptation work involved in transporting Becoming a Man (BAM) from the US to the UK. BAM is a selective school-based youth development program for 12-18 year-old boys that aims to improve school engagement and reduce interactions with the criminal justice system. We describe the nature of and rationale for adaptations and identify learning for future adaptation efforts. An adaptation team comprising the intervention developers, new providers and the evaluators met weekly for 10 weeks, applying a structured, pragmatic and evidence-informed approach to adapt the BAM curriculum and implementation process. Changes were informed by documentary analysis, group-based discussions and site visits. The group agreed 27 changes to the content of 17/30 lessons, at both surface (e.g., cultural references) and deep (key mechanisms or concepts) levels. Of 28 contextual factors considered, 15 discrepancies between the US and UK were identified and resolved (e.g., differences in staffing arrangements). Strengths of the process were the blend of expertise on the adaptation team in the program and local context, and constant reference to and ongoing refinement of the program theory of change. Limitations included the lack of involvement of school staff or students. Further research is needed into potential conflicts between stakeholder perspectives during adaptation and whose views to prioritise and when.

Abstract
Since Baker's attempt to characterize the 'ideal weed' over 50 years ago, ecologists have sought to identify features of species that predict invasiveness. Several of Baker's 'ideal weed' traits are well studied, and we now understand that many traits can facilitate different components of the invasion process, such as dispersal traits promoting transport or selfing enabling establishment. However, the effects of traits on invasion are context dependent. The traits promoting invasion in one community or at one invasion stage may inhibit invasion of other communities or success at other invasion stages, and the benefits of any given trait may depend on the other traits possessed by the species. Furthermore, variation in traits among populations or species is the result of evolution. Accordingly, evolution both prior to and after invasion may determine invasion outcomes. Here, we review how our understanding of the ecology and evolution of traits in invasive plants has developed since Baker's original efforts, resulting from empirical studies and the emergence of new frameworks and ideas such as community assembly theory, functional ecology, and rapid adaptation. Looking forward, we consider how trait-based approaches might inform our understanding of less-explored aspects of invasion biology ranging from invasive species responses to climate change to coevolution of invaded communities.

Abstract
Inborn errors of immunity (IEIs) are rare genetic disorders characterized by increased susceptibility to infection and immune system dysregulation. Despite the significant physical toll of IEIs, there is less information on clinical and patient-reported biopsychosocial outcomes and how these individuals psychologically adapt. We invited adults with IEIs or suspected IEIs (sIEIs) enrolled on a protocol at the National Institutes of Health to complete a cross-sectional survey measuring patient-reported biopsychosocial outcomes, psychological adaptation, and perceived control. We received responses from 312 individuals. Levels of adaptation to illness were similar to previously published cohorts of individuals with chronic health conditions. Participants reported significantly increased levels of anxiety, pain, sleep disturbance, and fatigue and significantly lower levels of physical functioning compared to the general population (p < 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that perceived present control was significantly positively associated with adaptation (β = 0.26, p < 0.05). We found that perceived present control was significantly associated with psychological adaptation. Individuals with sIEIs in our sample struggled with poorer biopsychosocial outcomes than the general population, although these may not ultimately be directly related to psychological adaptation. Interventions to increase perceived control may be beneficial to this patient population. Clinicians should also consider screening and management for psychological and physical concerns including anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, pain, and fatigue.

Abstract
Some relevant emerging properties of intelligent systems are "adaptation to a changing environment," "reaction to unexpected situations," "capacity of problem solving," and "ability to communicate." Single cells have remarkable abilities to adapt, make adequate context-dependent decision, take constructive actions, and communicate, thus theoretically meeting all the above-mentioned requirements. From a biological point of view, cancer can be viewed as an invasive species, composed of cells that move from primary to distant sites, being continuously exposed to changes in the environmental conditions. Blood represents the first hostile habitat that a cancer cell encounters once detached from the primary site, so that cancer cells must rapidly carry out multiple adaptation strategies to survive. The aim of this review was to deepen the adaptation mechanisms of cancer cells in the blood microenvironment, particularly referring to four adaptation strategies typical of animal species (phenotypic adaptation, metabolic adaptation, niche adaptation, and collective adaptation), which together define the broad concept of biological intelligence. We provided evidence that the required adaptations (either structural, metabolic, and related to metastatic niche formation) and "social" behavior are useful principles allowing putting into a coherent frame many features of circulating cancer cells. This interpretative frame is described by the comparison with analog behavioral traits typical of various animal models.

Abstract
Background The evidence-based Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) released in August 2020 were developed through a systematic literature review and patient-oriented research process. This CPG is considered a paradigm shift for obesity care as it introduced a new obesity definition that is based on health not body size, incorporates lived experiences of people affected by obesity, and addresses the pervasive weight bias and stigma that patients face in healthcare systems. The purpose of this pilot project was to assess the feasibility of adapting the Canadian CPG in Chile and Ireland. Methods An International Clinical Practice Guideline Adaptation Committee was established to oversee the project. The project was conducted through four interrelated phases: 1) planning and preparation; 2) pilot project application process; 3) adaptation; and 4) launch, dissemination, and implementation. Ireland used the GRADE-ADAPTE framework and Chile used the GRADE-ADOLOPMENT approach. Results Chile and Ireland developed their adapted guidelines in one third of the time it took to develop the Canadian guidelines. In Ireland, 18 chapters, which underpin the 80 key recommendations, were contextually adapted. Chile adopted 18 chapters and 76 recommendations, adapted one recommendation, and developed 12 new recommendations.
. Conclusion The pilot project demonstrated it is feasible to adapt the Canadian CPG for use in other countries with different healthcare systems, languages, and cultural contexts, while retaining the Canadian CPG's key principles and values such as the treatment of obesity as a chronic disease, adoption of new clinical assessment approaches that go beyond anthropometric measurements, elimination of weight bias and stigma, shifting obesity care outcomes to improved health and well-being rather than weight loss alone, and the use of patient-centred, collaborative and shared-decision clinical care approaches.

Abstract
Olfaction is a crucial capability for most vertebrates and is realized through olfactory receptors in the nasal cavity. The enormous diversity of olfactory receptors has been created by gene duplication, following a birth-and-death model of evolution. The olfactory receptor genes of the amphibians have received relatively little attention up to now, although recent studies have increased the number of species for which data are available. This study analyzed the diversity and chromosomal distribution of the OR genes of three anuran species (Engystomops pustulosus, Bufo bufo and Hymenochirus boettgeri). The OR genes were identified through searches for homologies, and sequence filtering and alignment using bioinformatic tools and scripts. A high diversity of OR genes was found in all three species, ranging from 917 in B. bufo to 1194 in H. boettgeri, and a total of 2076 OR genes in E. pustulosus. Six OR groups were recognized using an evolutionary gene tree analysis. While E. pustulosus has one of the highest numbers of genes of the gamma group (which detect airborne odorants) yet recorded in an anuran, B. bufo presented the smallest number of pseudogene sequences ever identified, with no pseudogenes in either the beta or epsilon groups. Although H. boettgeri shares many morphological adaptations for an aquatic lifestyle with Xenopus, and presented a similar number of genes related to the detection of water-soluble odorants, it had comparatively far fewer genes related to the detection of airborne odorants. This study is the first to describe the complete OR repertoire of the three study species and represents an important contribution to the understanding of the evolution and function of the sense of smell in vertebrates.

Abstract
The genetic basis underlying adaptive physiological mechanisms has been extensively explored in mammals after colonizing the seas. However, independent lineages of aquatic mammals exhibit complex patterns of secondary colonization in freshwater environments. This change in habitat represents new osmotic challenges, and additional changes in key systems, such as the osmoregulatory system, are expected. Here, we studied the selective regime on coding and regulatory regions of 20 genes related to the osmoregulation system in strict aquatic mammals from independent evolutionary lineages, cetaceans, and sirenians, with representatives in marine and freshwater aquatic environments. We identified positive selection signals in genes encoding the protein vasopressin (AVP) in mammalian lineages with secondary colonization in the fluvial environment and in aquaporins for lineages inhabiting the marine and fluvial environments. A greater number of sites with positive selection signals were found for the dolphin species compared to the Amazonian manatee. Only the AQP5 and AVP genes showed selection signals in more than one independent lineage of these mammals. Furthermore, the vasopressin gene tree indicates greater similarity in river dolphin sequences despite the independence of their lineages based on the species tree. Patterns of distribution and enrichment of Transcription Factors in the promoter regions of target genes were analyzed and appear to be phylogenetically conserved among sister species. We found accelerated evolution signs in genes ACE, AQP1, AQP5, AQP7, AVP, NPP4, and NPR1 for the fluvial mammals. Together, these results allow a greater understanding of the molecular bases of the evolution of genes responsible for osmotic control in aquatic mammals.

Abstract
Entry motion sickness (EMS) affects crewmembers upon return to Earth following extended adaptation to microgravity. Anticholinergic pharmaceuticals (e.g., Meclizine) are often taken prior to landing; however, they have operationally adverse side effects (e.g., drowsiness). There is a need to develop non-pharmaceutical countermeasures to EMS. We assessed the efficacy of a technological countermeasure providing external visual cues following splashdown, where otherwise only nauseogenic internal cabin visual references are available. Our countermeasure provided motion-congruent visual cues of an Earth-fixed scene in virtual reality, which was compared to a control condition with a head-fixed fixation point in virtual reality in a between-subject design with 15 subjects in each group. We tested the countermeasure's effectiveness at mitigating motion sickness symptoms at the end of a ground-based reentry analog: approximately 1 h of 2Gx centrifugation followed by up to 1 h of wave-like motion. Secondarily, we explored differences in vestibular-mediated balance performance between the two conditions. While Motion Sickness Questionnaire outcomes did not differ detectably between groups, we found significantly better survival rates (with dropout dictated by reporting moderate nausea consecutively over 2 min) in the visual countermeasure group than the control group (79% survival vs. 33%, t(14) = 2.50, p = 0.027). Following the reentry analogs, subjects demonstrated significantly higher sway prior to recovery (p = 0.0004), which did not differ between control and countermeasure groups. These results imply that providing motion-congruent visual cues may be an effective mean for curbing the development of moderate nausea and increasing comfort following future space missions.

Abstract
Determining the mechanisms by which organisms evolve thermal tolerance is crucial to predicting how populations may respond to changes in local temperature regimes. Although evidence of relationships between mitochondrial background and thermal adaptation have been found, the presence of both nuclear-encoded and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded proteins warrants experiments aimed at parsing out the relative role of each genome in thermal adaptation. We investigated the relative role of mtDNA-encoded products in thermal tolerance between two divergent populations of Tigriopus californicus using first-generation (F1) hybrids that vary in maternally inherited mtDNA but are heterozygous for population-specific alleles across nuclear loci. We tested two measures of thermal tolerance, (1) survivorship to acute thermal stress and (2) thermal stability of mitochondrial performance in Complex I-fueled ATP synthesis, both across a range of increasing temperatures. We found that the southern population (San Diego, CA, USA) outperformed the northern population (Strawberry Hill, OR, USA) in survivorship, and that both reciprocal F1 hybrid crosses had intermediate survival. Mitochondria from the San Diego population displayed greater stability in ATP synthesis with increasing temperatures compared with those from Strawberry Hill. Interestingly, hybrids from both cross directions had synthesis profiles that were very similar to that of Strawberry Hill. Taken together, these results suggest that the relative role of the mtDNA in these phenotypes is negligible compared with that of elements encoded by nuclear DNA in this system.
