Spectroscopic insights into the binding characteristics of heavy metals to dissolved organic matter in landfill leachate

Landfill leachate is produced in the process of sanitary landfilling, which contains significant amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and heavy metal contaminants. Insights into the interactions between heavy metals and DOM in landfill leachate are beneficial for the understanding of heavy metal fates and optimization of landfill leachate treatment. In this work, the coherent structural changes of landfill leachate DOM during binding with various heavy metals were explored through the integration of molecular spectroscopic methods with chemometrics and statistic correlation analyses. The results indicate that protein substances, phenolic and discrete carboxyl groups in landfill leachate DOM were involved in the complexation with heavy metals, resulting in the formation of conjugated macromolecules/aggregates with high aromaticity and molecular weight/size. The fluorescent protein-like, fulvic acid-like, and humic-like fractions in DOM were engaged in the interaction, which were closely related to phenolic-like and carboxylic-like structure. Compared to membrane concentrates DOM, raw leachate DOM exhibited a higher binding affinity to heavy metals (especially for Cu2+, whilst the weakest was Cd2+). The integrated approach provides useful information in elucidating the binding processes of metals with landfill leachate DOM, including site heterogeneity, binding strength and functional group sequences.

Alginate-encapsulated biochar as an effective soil ameliorant for reducing Pb phytoavailability to lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)

The alginate-biochar formulation for metal removal from aquatic environments has been widely tried but its use for lowering phytoavailability of metals in the soil-crop continuum is limited. Biochar has been increasingly used as a soil amendment due to its potential for soil carbon sequestration and sorption capacity. Handling of powdery biochar as a soil top-dressing material is, however, cumbersome and vulnerable to loss by water and wind. In this experiment, biochar powder, which was pyrolyzed from oak trees, was encapsulated into beads with alginate, which is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in brown algae. Both batch and pot experiments were conducted to examine the effects of the alginate-encapsulated biochar beads (BB), as compared to its original biochar powdery form (BP), on the Pb adsorption capacity and phytoavailability of soil Pb to lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). The BB treatment improved reactivity about six times due to a higher surface area (287 m2 g-1) and five times due to a higher cation exchange capacity (50 cmolc kg-1) as compared to the BP treatment. The maximum sorption capacity of Pb was increased to 152 from 81 mg g-1 because of surface chemosorption. Adsorption of Pb onto BB followed multiple first-order kinetics and comprised fast and slow steps. More than 60% of the Pb was adsorbed in the fast step, i.e., within 3 h. Also, the BB treatment, up to the 5% level (w/w), increased soil pH from 5.4 to 6.5 and lowered the phytoavailable fraction of Pb in soil from 5.7 to 0.3 mg kg-1. The Pb concentrations in lettuce cultivated at 5% for the BP and BB treatments were similar but 63 and 66% lower, respectively, than those of the control soil. The results showed that the encapsulation of biochar with alginate enhanced adsorption by the biochar.

Biochar from phytoremediation plant residues: a review of its characteristics and potential applications

Phytoremediation is a cost-effective and eco-friendly plant-based approach promising technique to repair heavy metal-contaminated soils. However, a significant quantity of plant residues needs to be properly treated and utilized. Pyrolysis is an effective technology for converting residues to biochar, which can solve the problem and avoid secondary contamination. This paper reviews the generation, and physicochemical properties of biochar from phytoremediation residues, and its application in soil improvement, environmental remediation, and carbon sequestration. In spite of this, it is important to be aware of the potential toxicity of heavy metals in biochar and the environmental risks of biochar before applying it to practical applications. Future challenges in the production and application of residue-derived biochar include the rational selection of pyrolysis parameters and proper handling of potentially hazardous components in the biochar.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate-induced tolerance to cadmium stress involves increased flavonoid synthesis and nutrient homeostasis in tomato roots

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal, increasingly accumulating in the environment and its presence in various environmental compartments represents a significant risk to human health via the food chain. Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG) is a prominent secondary metabolite, which can safeguard plants from biotic and abiotic stress. However, the role of EGCG in flavonoid synthesis, nutrient acquisition and reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism under Cd stress remains unclear. Here, we examined the effects of EGCG and Cd treatment on leaf photochemical efficiency, cell ultrastructure, essential element acquisition, antioxidant system, and secondary metabolism in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). The results showed that O2•-, H2O2, and malondialdehyde levels increased after Cd treatment, but Fv/Fm decreased significantly, suggesting that Cd induced oxidative stress and photoinhibition. However, EGCG mitigated the adverse effects of Cd-induced phytotoxicity in both the roots and leaves. A decrease in ROS accumulation under EGCG + Cd treatment was mainly attributed to the significant enhancement in antioxidant enzyme activity, flavonoid content, and PHENYLALANINE AMMONIA-LYASE expression in roots. Moreover, EGCG reduced Cd content but increased some essential nutrient contents in tomato plants. Transmission electron microscopy-based observations revealed that EGCG treatment safeguards leaf and root cell ultrastructure under Cd stress. This implies that tomato plants subjected to Cd stress experienced advantageous effects upon receiving EGCG treatment. The present work elucidated critical mechanisms by which EGCG induces tolerance to Cd, thereby providing a basis for future investigations into environmentally sustainable agricultural practices in areas contaminated with heavy metals, for utilizing naturally occurring substances found in plants.

Preparation of smart magnetic fluids and application in sewage treatment: Copper adsorption, kinetic and isotherm study

The effective removal of heavy metal ions from sewage remains a critical issue, and applying the operability of magnetic materials to large volume wastewater treatment has been a significant challenge. In this paper, metal ions adsorption induced aggregation strategy is proposed to solve this contradiction. The intelligent magnetic fluid designed in this study is a well-dispersed fluid state when treating sewage, and can efficiently adsorb heavy metal ions in wastewater with high adsorption capacity and ultra-fast adsorption kinetics. More importantly, after saturation of adsorption, the magnetic fluid will transform from a well-dispersed fluid state to an agglomeration state which is easy to precipitate and separate via external magnetic field. In a simple and effective way, the particles size of magnetic nanoparticles was precisely controlled by cellulose derivatives modification to obtain a stable magnetic fluid in water. The Freundlich model best described Cu2+ adsorption on magnetite nanoparticles, the correlation coefficients from the Cu2+ adsorption on the two magnetic fluids are 0.9554 and 0.9336, n are 1.868 and 2.117, revealing a favorable adsorption of Cu2+ onto magnetic fluids. The pseudo second-order model fitted the adsorption kinetic data better, the qe are 0.1948 and 0.1315 mmol/g and the R2 are 0.9999, indicating that the adsorption of Cu2+ onto the magnetic fluid was dominated by chemisorption. Moreover, the removal rate of Cu2+ in tap water and lake water was more than 97.1%, and the removal rate of large volume sewage was 81.7%. The synthetic magnetic fluid has high adsorption capacity, ultra-fast adsorption kinetics, reusability and easy separation, indicating its potential application for the removal of heavy metal ions from large-volume sewage.

Combined use of biochar and phosphate rocks on phosphorus and heavy metal availability: A meta-analysis

Biochar (BC) and phosphate rocks (PR) are alternative nutrient sources with multiple benefits for sustainable agriculture. The combination of these soil amendments serves two main purposes: to increase soil phosphorus (P) availability and to remediate heavy metal (HM) contamination. However, a further demonstration of the benefits and risks associated with the combined use of BC and PR (BC + PR) is needed, considering the specific characteristics of raw materials, soil types, experimental conditions, and climatic contexts. This meta-analysis is based on data from 28 selected studies, including 581 paired combinations evaluating effects on extraction and fractionation of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), and 290 paired combinations for soil labile and non-labile P. The results reveal that BC, PR, and BC + PR significantly increase soil labile and non-labile P, with BC + PR showing a 150% greater increase compared to BC alone. In tropical regions, substantial increases in P levels were observed with BC, PR, and BC + PR exhibiting increments of 317, 798, and 288%, respectively. In contrast, temperate climate conditions showed lower increases, with BC, PR, and BC + PR indicating 54, 123, and 88% rises in soil P levels. Moreover, BC, PR, and BC + PR effectively reduce the bioavailability of Cd and Pb in soil, with BC + PR demonstrating the highest efficacy in immobilizing Cd. The synergistic effect of BC + PR highlights their potential for Cd remediation. BC + PR effectively reduces the exchangeable fraction of Cd and Pb in soil, leading to their immobilization in more stable forms, such as the residual fraction. This study provides valuable insights into the remediation potential and P management benefits of BC and PR, highlighting their importance for sustainable agriculture and soil remediation practices.

Seasonal Monitoring of Heavy Metal Pollution in Water and Zebra Mussels Dreissena polymorpha as a Potential Bioindicator Species from Lake Habitat

In aquatic ecosystem, metal pollution is an important environmental hazard. Mussels as a bioindicator species are often used for assessment the presence of potentially toxic metals. Hence, the present study aimed to assess the effect of seasonal variations on some heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Pb, As, Zn and Cu) accumulation in water and Dreissena polymorpha from lake habitat. Our result indicated that Zn accumulated at a very high level in the zebra mussels while As accumulated at a high level in water samples. Seasonal variations significantly affected Cu concentration in the water samples (P < 0.05) while Cr concentration in the mussel samples was significantly affected by seasonal variations (P < 0.05). According to the water analysis, mean concentrations of metals are below the maximum limits established by the World Health Organization and USEPA, except As. Overall, our data emphasize anthropogenic pollution in the Turkish aquatic environment and confirm the use of D. polymorpha as a prospective biomonitor for metal polluted sites'.

Polycaprolactone/polyacrylic acid/graphene oxide composite nanofibers as a highly efficient sorbent to remove lead toxic metal from drinking water and apple juice

Due to the characteristics of electrospun nanofibers (NFs), they are considered a suitable substrate for the adsorption and removal of heavy metals. Electrospun nanofibers are prepared based on optimized polycaprolactone (PCL, 12 wt%) and polyacrylic acid (PAA, 1 wt%) polymers loaded with graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO NPs, 1 wt%). The morphological, molecular interactions, crystallinity, thermal, hydrophobicity, and biocompatibility properties of NFs are characterized by spectroscopy (scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Thermogravimetric analysis), contact angle, and MTT tests. Finally, the adsorption efficacy of NFs to remove lead (Pb2+) from water and apple juice samples was determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The average diameter for PCL, PCL/PAA, and PCL/PAA/GO NFs was 137, 500, and 216 nm, respectively. Additionally, the contact angle for PCL, PCL/PAA, and PCL/PAA/GO NFs was obtained at 74.32º, 91.98º, and 94.59º, respectively. The cytotoxicity test has shown non-toxicity for fabricated NFs against the HUVEC endothelial cell line by more than 80% survival during 72 h. Under optimum conditions including pH (= 6), temperature (25 °C), Pb concentration (25 to 50 mg/L), and time (15 to 30 min), the adsorption efficiency was generally between 80 and 97%. The adsorption isotherm model of PCL/PAA/GO NFs in the adsorption of lead metal follows the Langmuir model, and the reaction kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order. PCL/PA/GO NFs have shown adsorption of over 80% in four consecutive cycles. The adsorption efficacy of NFs to remove Pb in apple juice has reached 76%. It is appropriate and useful to use these nanofibers as a high-efficiency adsorbent in water and food systems based on an analysis of their adsorption properties and how well they work.

Integration with carbon capture technology enables a positive carbon balance for sustainable rice paddy remediation with calcium‑silicon composites

In situ stabilization technologies based on lime-derived materials are extensively used for remediating Cd-contaminated paddy soils. However, the environmental impacts and carbon budget associated with these technologies throughout the paddy soil remediation life cycle are gaining increasing attention. Herein, through paddy field trials, two representative lime-derived materials, quicklime and calcium-silicon composite (Ca/Si), are evaluated for their remediation effectiveness and environmental sustainability in the remediation of Cd-contaminated soils. The results demonstrate that both quicklime and Ca/Si can reduce Cd bioavailability and enable the safe use of rice grain. Nevertheless, the life cycle assessment score of the quicklime case is 4.4 times that of the Ca/Si case, indicating that the quicklime case has a greater negative impact on the environment. Furthermore, the net ecosystem carbon budget analysis reveals that both lime-derived materials exhibit outward carbon emissions throughout their life cycle, in which the carbon emission of the quicklime case (-20.2 t CO2-eq/ha) is 20 times that of the Ca/Si case (-1 t CO2-eq/ha). Moreover, the implementation of carbon capture technology results in the Ca/Si case achieving a positive carbon budget and contributing to a carbon neutrality plan. Conversely, the quicklime case falls short, affording only a 24.8 % reduction in carbon emissions. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the environmental sustainability of different lime-derived materials for paddy soil remediation and carbon mitigation.

Innovative accumulative risk assessment of co-exposure to Cd, As, and Pb in contaminated rice based on their in vivo bioavailability and in vitro bioaccessibility

The consumption of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) co-contaminated rice exposes humans to multiple heavy metals simultaneously, with relative bioavailability (RBA) and bioaccessibility (BAc) being important determinants of potential health risks. This study evaluated the relationship between in vivo RBA and in vitro BAc of Cd, As, and Pb in rice and their cumulative risk to humans. A total of 110 rice samples were collected in Zhejiang Province, China, and 10 subsamples with varying concentration gradients were randomly selected to measure RBA using a mouse model (liver, kidney, femur, blood, and urine as endpoints) and BAc using four in vitro assays (PBET, UBM, SBRC, and IVG). Our results indicated that Cd-RBA varied from 21.2 % to 67.5 %, As-RBA varied from 23.2 % to 69.3 %, and Pb-RBA varied from 22.2 % to 68.9 % based on mouse liver plus kidneys. The BAc values for Cd, As, and Pb in rice varied according to the assay. Compared to Cd and As, Pb exhibited a lower BAc in the gastric (GP) and intestinal (IP) phases. According to the relationship between the BAc and RBA values, IVG-GP (R2 = 0.92), SBRC-IP (R2 = 0.73), and UBM-GP (R2 = 0.80) could be used as predictors of Cd-, As-, and Pb-RBA in rice, respectively. The health risks associated with co-exposure to Cd, As, and Pb in contaminated rice for both adults and children exceeded the acceptable threshold, with Cd and As being the primary risk factors. The noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were markedly reduced when the RBA and BAc values were incorporated into the risk assessment. Due to the risk overestimation inherent in estimating the risk level based on total metal concentration, our study provides a realistic assessment of the cumulative health risks associated with co-exposure to Cd, As, and Pb in contaminated rice using in vivo RBA and in vitro BAc bioassays.

Recent strategies, progress, and prospects of two-dimensional metal carbides (MXenes) materials in wastewater purification: A review

With the rapid development of industrialization, water pollution directly leads to the serious shortage of fresh water. As reported by the World Water Council, nearly 3.8 billion people will face water scarcity by 2030. Therefore, developing advanced nanomaterials to realize wastewater purification is a major challenge. Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (MXenes), as the emerging 2D layered nanomaterials, have been investigated for the applications of water purification treatment since first reported in 2011. Over 40 different MXenes have been developed for environmental remediation, and dozens more structures and properties are theoretically predicted. Here, we review the advances from the aspects of synthesis strategies for MXenes, purification mechanism, and their applications in wastewater treatment processes. The major points are 1) the synthesis and modification approaches for MXenes such as multi-layered stacked MXenes and delaminated MXenes 2) a discussion of current water remediation over MXene-based materials, 3) a brief introduction for removal behaviors and deep interaction mechanisms, 4) optimization strategies and key points for boosting the remediation performance of MXenes.

Cadmium levels and soil pH drive structure and function differentiation of endophytic bacterial communities in Sedum plumbizincicola: A field study

Sedum plumbizincicola is a promising hyperaccumulator for heavy metal phytoremediation. It grows in heavy metal polluted soil and stores specific endophyte resources with heavy metal tolerance or growth promotion characteristics. In this study, the endophyte communities of S. plumbizincicola, growing naturally in the field (two former mining locations and one natural location) were investigated, and their structure and function were comparatively studied. The bioaccumulation and translocation characteristics of cadmium (Cd) and selenium (Se) in S. plumbizincicola were also evaluated. The results showed that the heavy metal pollution reduced the richness and diversity of endophyte communities. Soil pH and Cd concentration could be the key factors affecting the composition of the endophyte community. Co-occurrence network analysis identified that 22 keystone taxa belonging to Actinobacteriota, Firmicutes, Myxococcota and Proteobacteria were positively correlated with Cd bioaccumulation and translocation. The predicted endophyte metabolic pathways were enriched in physiological metabolism, immune system, and genetic Information processing. These findings may help to understand how endophytes assist host plants to enhance their adaptability to harsh environments, and provide a basis for further exploration of plant-endophyte interactions and improvement in phytoremediation efficiency.

Assessment of metals (Ni, Ba) deposition in plant types and their organs at Mersin City, Türkiye

The increase in heavy metal concentrations in the air, especially after the Industrial Revolution, is notable for the scientific world because of the adverse effects that threaten environmental and human health. Among the trace elements, nickel (Ni) is carcinogenic, and all barium (Ba) compounds are toxic. Trace elements are critical for human and environmental health. Their threat further increases, especially in the urban areas and surroundings with a high population. In urban areas, the trace element contamination in the airborne can be reduced using plants. However, which plant and plant organs absorb trace elements could not be determined. In the present study, Ni and Ba concentrations in the branch, wood, and leaf samples of 14 species collected from the city center of Mersin province were determined. As a result, broad-leaved species' Ni and Ba concentrations in their leaf sample were generally higher than other species. Almost all species had the lowest Ni and Ba concentrations in their wood samples. Among these 14 species, it was found that Ni concentration was very high, especially in non-washed leaves of Platanus orientalis, Photinia serrulata, and Citrus reticulate, and Ba concentration was very high in Citrus reticulata, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, Laurus nobilis, and Acer hyrcanum. Using broad-leaved species in urban areas where pollution is at high levels will significantly contribute to reducing Ni and Ba pollution. It is recommended that these points be considered in future urban landscaping projects.

The potential of ferrihydrite-synthetic humic-like acid composite as a soil amendment for metal-contaminated agricultural soil: Immobilization mechanisms by combining abiotic and biotic perspectives

In-situ passivation technique has attracted increasing attention for metal-contaminated agricultural soil remediation. However, metal immobilization mechanisms are mostly illustrated based on metal speciation changes and alterations in soil physicochemical properties from a macroscopic and abiotic perspective. In this study, a ferrihydrite-synthetic humic-like acid composite (FH-SHLA) was fabricated and applied as a passivator for a 90-day soil incubation. The heavy metals immobilization mechanisms of FH-SHLA were investigated by combining both abiotic and biotic perspectives. Effects of FH-SHLA application on soil micro-ecology were also evaluated. The results showed that the 5%FH-SHLA treatment significantly decreased the DTPA-extractable Pb, Cd and Zn by 80.75%, 46.82% and 63.63% after 90 days of incubation (P < 0.05), respectively. Besides, 5% FH-SHLA addition significantly increased soil pH, soil organic matter content and cation exchange capacity (P < 0.05). The SEM, FTIR, and XPS characterizations revealed that the abiotic metal immobilization mechanisms by FH-SHLA included surface complexation, precipitation, electrostatic attraction, and cation-π interactions. For biotic perspective, in-situ microorganisms synergistically participated in the immobilization process via sulfide precipitation and Fe mineral production. FH-SHLA significantly altered the diversity and composition of the soil microbial community, and enhanced the intensity and complexity of the microbial co-occurrence network. Both metal bioavailability and soil physiochemical parameters played a vital role in shaping microbial communities, while the former contributed more. Overall, this study provides new insight into the heavy metal passivation mechanism and demonstrates that FH-SHLA is a promising and environmentally friendly amendment for metal-contaminated soil remediation.

Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in tea plantation soil around Tai Lake region in Suzhou, China

Tea plant [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] is one of the important foliar cash crops in China, and its root system absorbs heavy metal (HM) elements enriched in the soil and transports them to the over ground part. In order to ensure the safety of the soil ecological environment and tea raw materials in the tea production area, the HM contents of soil and tea plant leaves in Suzhou tea plantations were detected, the relationship between HMs and soil physicochemical properties was analyzed, and the ecological risk of HMs in tea plantation soils was evaluated by using relevant detection techniques and evaluation models. The results showed that the average pH of tea plantation soils around Tai Lake in Suzhou was within the range suitable for the growth of tea plants. The pH, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and available potassium of tea plantation soil satisfying the requirements of high quality, high efficiency and high yield ('3H') tea plantation accounted for 47.06%, 26.47%, 8.82%, 79.41% and 67.65%, respectively. Site 2 fully met the requirements of '3H' tea plantation. In addition, the contents of cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) were extremely variable, and the average contents exceeded the background value of soil in Jiangsu Province, but the HM contents of tea leaves all met the pollution-free standard, and the HM contents of tea leaves around Tai Lake in Suzhou were generally at a safe level. The composite ecological risk index ranged from 0.05 to 0.60, and 32 of the 34 sample sites (except site 21 and site 23) are the most suitable agricultural land for tea plantations.

Synergistic interactions of assorted ameliorating agents to enhance the potential of heavy metal phytoremediation

Pollution by toxic heavy metals creates a significant impact on the biotic community of the ecosystem. Nowadays, a solution to this problem is an eco-friendly approach like phytoremediation, in which plants are used to ameliorate heavy metals. In addition, various amendments are used to enhance the potential of heavy metal phytoremediation. Symbiotic microorganisms such as phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), endophytes, mycorrhiza and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) play a significant role in the improvement of heavy metal phytoremediation potential along with promoting the growth of plants that are grown in contaminated environments. Various chemical chelators (Indole 3-acetic acid, ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, ethylene glycol tetra acetic acid, ethylenediamine-N, N-disuccinic acid and nitrilotri-acetic acid) and their combined action with other agents also contribute to heavy metal phytoremediation enhancement. With modern techniques, transgenic plants and microorganisms are developed to open up an alternative strategy for phytoremediation. Genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics and metabolomics are widely used novel approaches to develop competent phytoremediators. This review accounts for the synergistic interactions of the ameliorating agent's role in enhancing heavy metal phytoremediation, intending to highlight the importance of these various approaches in reducing heavy metal pollution.

Antibiotic resistance genes and heavy metals in landfill: A review

Landfill is reservoir containing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) that pose a threat to human life and health. Heavy metals impose lasting effects on ARGs. This review investigated and analyzed the distribution, composition, and abundance of heavy metals and ARGs in landfill. The abundance ranges of ARGs detected in refuse and leachate were similar. The composition of ARG varied with sampling depth in refuse. ARG in leachate varies with the distribution of ARG in the refuse. The ARG of sulI was associated with 11 metals (Co, Pb, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Sb, As, Cd, and Al). The effects of the total metal concentration on ARG abundance were masked by many factors. Low heavy metal concentrations showed positive effects on ARG diffusion; conversely, high heavy metal concentrations showed negative effects. Organic matter had a selective pressure effect on microorganisms and could provide energy for the diffusion of ARGs. Complexes of heavy metals and organic matter were common in landfill. Therefore, the hypothesis was proposed that organic matter and heavy metals have combined effects on the horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs during landfill stabilization. This work provides a new basis to better understand the HGT of ARGs in landfill.

Molecular characterization of genes involved in tolerance of cadmium in Triticum aestivum (L.) under Cd stress

The NRAMPs (natural resistance-associated macrophage proteins) are major transporters for the absorption and transport of metals like Pb, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Cd in plants. While NRAMP gene family members have been extensively studied as metal transporters in model and other plants, little information has been reported on their role in Triticum aestivum, particularly in response to Cd stress. Current study reported 13 NRAMP candidates in the genome of T. aestivum. Phylogenetic analysis divided these into three clades. Motif and gene structure study showed that members in the same clades shared the same location and pattern, which further supported the phylogenetic analysis. The analysis of cis-acting elements in promoter sequences of NRAMP genes in wheat identified stress-responsive transcription factor binding sites. Multiple sequence alignment identified the conservation of important residues. Based on RNA-seq and qRT-PCR analysis, Cd stress-responsive variations of TaNRAMP gene expression were reported. This study provides comprehensive data to understand the TaNRAMP gene family, its features, and its expression, which will be a helpful framework for functional research.

Heavy metal pollution in surface water bodies in provincial Khanh Hoa, Vietnam: Pollution and human health risk assessment, source quantification, and implications for sustainable management and development

The global issue of heavy metal pollution in surface water poses a significant concern, with the potential to harm public health through various pathways. Given that pollution levels are dependent on water bodies and seasons and their potential impacts on human health vary with children and adults, it is crucial to identify and quantify pollution sources for the development of sustainable management strategies. The current study aimed to evaluate pollution levels and associated health risks of heavy metals and to quantify their pollution sources in various surface water bodies in Khanh Hoa, Vietnam. Water samples were taken from three water bodies (reservoirs, rivers, and narrow waterways) during two seasons (dry and rainy) from 2016 to 2020 and analyzed for seven heavy metals. The results showed that iron had the highest concentration of 392.4 (μg L-1), followed by zinc (25.7 μg L-1), arsenic (3.93 μg L-1), copper (3.77 μg L-1), lead (2.77 μg L-1), chromium (2.71 μg L-1), and cadmium (0.57 μg L-1). Narrow waterways were more polluted with heavy metals (heavy metal pollution index, HPI = 29.5) than other water bodies, such as rivers (23.3) and reservoirs (21.7), and the dry season had a higher HPI (26.5) than the rainy season (24.0). The hazard index for children varied from 1.2 to 1.48, while that for adults was less than 1, suggesting that surface water may have adverse impacts on children's health. The factor analysis identified three primary sources of contamination, namely combustion emissions/street dust, agricultural run-off, and other sources. Cadmium is the most critical metal in determining HPI, while arsenic and chromium are the two key elements potentially influencing children's health. Managing pollution sources, reducing the metal concentration, and controlling the pathways through which metals enter the human body should be implemented for a healthier environment and long-term development.

Modification of natural zeolites and their applications for heavy metal removal from polluted environments: Challenges, recent advances, and perspectives

In recent decades, environmental pollution has become a significant problem for human health and environmental impact. The high accumulation of heavy metals in waters and soils from different sources was conducted by finding efficient and environmentally friendly treatment methods and materials for their removal. Natural zeolites have found wide-ranging applications in environmental remediation and protection, considering various treatment and modification methods designed to enhance the natural zeolites' adsorptive or ion-exchange capabilities for increased efficiency. This paper briefly consolidates the recent scientific literature related to the main characteristics of natural and modified zeolites, the advantages and limitations of their environmental remediation application, and summarizes the methodologies applied to natural zeolites in order to improve their properties. Their application for removing heavy metals from water systems and soils is also comprehensively discussed. This review highlights the excellent potential of natural zeolites to be used after specific treatment or modification as a sustainable and green material to solve numerous environmental pollution issues.

Comparison of metals in eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) and the environment across the North Pacific Ocean: Environmental processes drive source delivery

Seagrass beds play a critical role in biodiversity maintenance, serving as nursery habitats for fisheries, and aiding in carbon and sediment sequestration in the ecosystem. These habitats receive dissolved and particulate material inputs, like nutrients and heavy metals, affecting both plant health and the ecosystem. Eelgrass (Zostera marina L.), sediments, and water were randomly collected at twenty sites along the temperate North Pacific coasts of Asia and North America to assess heavy metals concentrations (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb). This aimed to understand heavy metal distribution and accumulation patterns in eelgrass tissues, revealing crucial factors influencing metal accumulation. The sampling included various areas, from pristine marine reserves to human-influenced zones, covering industrial, agricultural, and aquaculture regions, enabling a thorough analysis. This study's uniqueness lies in comparing heavy metal distributions in eelgrass tissues with sediments, uncovering unique accumulation patterns. Aboveground eelgrass tissues mainly accumulated Cd, Zn, and Cu, while belowground tissues stored Cr and Pb. Aboveground eelgrass tissues proved reliable in indicating Cd and Pb concentrations in sediments. However, the correlation between Cu, Zn, and Cr in eelgrass tissues and environmental concentrations seemed less direct, requiring further investigation into factors affecting metal accumulation in seagrass. Human activities are probable major contributors to heavy metal presence in Asian marine environments, whereas oceanographic processes serve as primary metal sources in North American Pacific estuaries. Critical discoveries emphasize the necessity for ongoing research on phytotoxic thresholds and in-depth studies on the complex connections between seagrass physiology and environmental metal concentrations. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for evaluating the broader impact of heavy metal pollution on coastal ecosystems and developing effective conservation measures.

The competitive and selective adsorption of heavy metals by struvite in the Pb(II)-Cd(II)-Zn(II) composite system and its environmental significance

The prevalence of struvite and other phosphate minerals in eutrophic environments has a significant effect on the transport and transformation of environmental heavy metals, but their competitive immobilization characteristics and mechanisms for heavy metals remain unclear. Three different sources of struvite (BS, CSHS, and CSS) were obtained respectively by biosynthesis and chemical synthesis with or without humic acid to investigate their competitive immobilization characteristics and mechanism of heavy metals in the Pb(II)-Cd(II)-Zn(II) composite system. The results showed that the immobilization of heavy metals by struvite is physico-chemical adsorption and the affinity (in descending order) is Pb(II) >> Cd(II)/Zn(II). Cd(II) promotes the immobilization of Pb(II)/Zn(II) by BS. The order of the selective strength by struvite for Pb(II) is BS >> CSS ≈ CSHS. The study indicates that the difference between struvite holding heavy metal ions is related to the material composition and heavy metal types, and BS shows best selective immobilization for Pb(II) in the Pb(II)-Cd(II)-Zn(II) composite system. This study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the environmental geochemical role and eco-environmental effects of struvite.

Mitigation effect of alpha-tocopherol and thermo-priming in Brassica napus L. under induced mercuric chloride stress

Soil pollution with heavy metals has grown to be a big hassle, leading to the loss in farming production particularly in developing countries like Pakistan, where no proper channel is present for irrigation and extraction of these toxic heavy metals. The present study aims to ameliorate the damages caused by heavy metal ions (Hg-Mercury) on rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) via a growth regulator (α-tocopherol 150 mg/L) and thermopriming technique at 4 °C and 50 °C to maintain plant agronomical and physiological characteristics. In pot experiments, we designed total of 11 treatments viz.( T0 (control), T1 (Hg4ppm), T2 (Hg8ppm), T3 (Hg4ppm + 4 °C), T4 (Hg4ppm + 4 °C + tocopherol (150 m/L)), T5 (Hg4ppm + 50 °C), T6 (Hg4ppm + 50 °C + tocopherol (150 mg/L)), T7 (Hg8ppm + 4 °C), T8 (Hg8ppm + 4 °C + tocopherol (150 mg/L)), T9 (Hg8ppm + 50 °C), T10 (Hg8ppm + 50 °C + tocopherol (150 mg/L) the results revealed that chlorophyll content at p < 0.05 with growth regulator and antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, peroxidase, and malondialdehyde enhanced up to the maximum level at T5 = Hg4ppm + 50 °C (50 °C thermopriming under 4 ppm mercuric chloride stress), suggesting that high temperature initiate the antioxidant system to reduce photosystem damage. However, protein, proline, superoxide dismutase at p < 0.05, and carotenoid, soluble sugar, and ascorbate peroxidase were increased non-significantly (p > 0.05) 50 °C thermopriming under 8 ppm high mercuric chloride stress (T9 = Hg8ppm + 50 °C) representing the tolerance of selected specie by synthesizing osmolytes to resist oxidation mechanism. Furthermore, reduction in % MC (moisture content) is easily improved with foliar application of α-tocopherol and 50 °C thermopriming and 4 ppm heavy metal stress at T6 = Hg4ppm + 50 °C + α-tocopherol (150 mg/L), with a remarkable increase in plant vigor and germination energy. It has resulted that the inhibitory effect of only lower concentration (4 ppm) of heavy metal stress was ameliorated by exogenous application of α-tocopherol and thermopriming technique by synthesizing high levels of proline and antioxidant activities in maintaining seedling growth and development on heavy metal contaminated soil.

Association between maternal blood or cord blood metal concentrations and catch-up growth in children born small for gestational age: an analysis by the Japan environment and children's study

BACKGROUND

Catch-up growth issues among children born small for gestational age (SGA) present a substantial public health challenge. Prenatal exposure to heavy metals can cause adverse effects on birth weight. However, comprehensive studies on the accurate assessment of individual blood concentrations of heavy metals and their effect on the failure to achieve catch-up growth remain unavailable. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of uterine exposure to toxic metals cadmium, lead, and mercury and essential trace metals manganese and selenium at low concentrations on the postnatal growth of children born SGA.

METHODS

Data on newborn birth size and other factors were obtained from the medical record transcripts and self-administered questionnaires of participants in the Japan Environment and Children's Study. The blood concentrations of lead, cadmium, mercury, selenium, and manganese in pregnant women in their second or third trimester were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. These heavy metal concentrations were also assessed in pregnant women's cord blood. Furthermore, the relationship between each heavy metal and height measure/catch-up growth in SGA children aged 4 years was analyzed using linear and logistic regression methods. These models were adjusted for confounders.

RESULTS

We studied 4683 mother-child pairings from 103,060 pregnancies included in the Japan Environment and Children's Study. Of these, 278 pairs were also analyzed using cord blood. At 3 and 4 years old, 10.7% and 9.0% of children who were born below the 10th percentile of body weight had height standard deviation scores (SDSs) below 2, respectively. Cord blood cadmium concentrations were associated with the inability to catch up in growth by 3 or 4 years old and the height SDS at 3 years old. In maternal blood, only manganese was positively associated with the height SDS of SGA children aged 2 years; however, it was not significantly associated with catch-up growth in these children.

CONCLUSION

Cadmium exposure is associated with failed catch-up development in SGA children. These new findings could help identify children highly at risk of failing to catch up in growth, and could motivate the elimination of heavy metal (especially cadmium) pollution to improve SGA children's growth.

Dual-functional DNAzyme powered CRISPR-Cas12a sensor for ultrasensitive and high-throughput detection of Pb2+ in freshwater

Freshwater lead pollution has posed severe threat to the environment and human health, underscoring the urgent necessity for accurate and user-friendly detection methods. Herein, we introduce a novel Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR-Cas) sensor for highly sensitive Pb2+ detection. To accomplish this, we designed a dual-functional deoxyribozyme (df-DNAzyme) probe that functions as an activator for the CRISPR-Cas12a system while also recognizing Pb2+. The df-DNAzyme probe was subsequently combined with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to fabricate a DNAzyme/AuNP nanoprobe, facilitating the activation of CRISPR-Cas12a in a one-to-multiple manner. Upon exposure to Pb2+, the df-DNAzyme is cleaved, causing disintegration of the DNAzyme/AuNP nanoprobe from magnetic beads. The degraded DNAzyme/AuNP containing multiple double-stranded DNA activators efficiently triggers CRISPR-Cas12a activity, initiating cleavage of fluorescence-quenched reporter DNA and generating amplified signals accordingly. The amplified fluorescence signal is accurately quantified using a quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) instrument capable of measuring 96 or 384 samples simultaneously at the microliter scale. This technique demonstrates ultra-sensitive detection capability for Pb2+ at concentrations as low as 1 pg/L within a range from 1 pg/L to 10 μg/L, surpassing limits set by World Health Organization (WHO) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) guidelines. This study offers an ultrasensitive and high-throughput method for the detection of Pb2+ in freshwater, thereby advancing a novel approach towards the development of precise and convenient techniques for detecting harmful contaminants.

Current progress on manganese in constructed wetlands: Bibliometrics, effects on wastewater treatment, and plant uptake

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a pollutant treatment design inspired by natural wetlands and are widely utilized for the removal of common pollutants. The research focus lies in the circulation of manganese (Mn) in the environment to enhance pollutant removal within CWs. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in understanding the role and effects of Mn in chemical weapons, based on literature retrieval from 2002 to 2021. Ecological risk assessment and heavy metals within CWs emerge as current areas of research interest. Mn sources within CWs primarily include natural deposition, heavy metal wastewater, and intentional addition. The cycling between Mn(II) and Mn(IV) facilitates enhanced wastewater treatment within CWs. Moreover, employing a Mn matrix proves effective in reducing ammonia nitrogen wastewater, organic pollutants, as well as heavy metals such as Cd and Pb, thereby addressing complex pollution challenges practically. To comprehensively analyze influencing factors on the system's performance, both internal factors (biological species, design parameters, pH levels, etc.) and external factors (seasonal climate variations, precipitation patterns, ultraviolet radiation exposure, etc.) were discussed. Among these factors, microorganisms, pollutants, and temperature are the most important influencing factors, which emphasizes the importance of these factors for wetland operation. Lastly, this paper delves into plant absorption of Mn along with coping strategies employed by plants when faced with Mn poisoning or deficiency scenarios. When utilizing Mn for the regulation of constructed wetlands, it is crucial to consider the tolerance levels of associated plant species. Furthermore, the study predicts future research hotspots encompass high-efficiency catalysis techniques, matrix-filling approaches, and preparation of resource utilization methods involving Mn nanomaterials.

Insights into antibiotic and heavy metal resistance interactions in Escherichia coli isolated from livestock manure and fertilized soil

Heavy metal and antibiotic-resistant bacteria from livestock feces are ecological and public health problems. However, the distribution and relationships of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), heavy metal resistance genes (HMRGs), and virulence factors (VFs) and their transmission mechanisms remain unclear. Therefore, we investigated the resistance of Escherichia coli, the prevalence of its ARGs, HMRGs, and VFs, and their transmission mechanisms in livestock fresh feces (FF), composted feces (CF), and fertilized soil (FS). In total, 99.54% (n = 221) and 91.44% (n = 203) of E. coli were resistant to at least one antibiotic and one heavy metal, respectively. Additionally, 72.52% (n = 161) were multi-drug resistant (MDR), of which Cu-resistant E. coli accounted for 72.67% (117/161). More than 99.34% (88/89) of E. coli carried multidrug ARGs, VFs, and the Cu resistance genes cueO and cusABCRFS. The Cu resistance genes cueO and cusABCRFS were mainly located on chromosomes, and cueO and cusF were positively associated with HMRGs, ARGs, and VFs. The Cu resistance genes pcoABCDRS were located on the plasmid pLKYL-P02 flanked by ARGs in PF18C from FF group and on chromosomes flanked by HMRGs in SAXZ1-1 from FS group. These results improved our understanding of bacterial multidrug and heavy metal resistance in the environment.

Preparation of heterogeneous cation exchange membrane and its contributions in enhancing the removal of Ni2+ by capacitive deionization system

Capacitive deionization (CDI), an emerging method to eliminate ions from water at a low cost, has garnered significant interest in recent years. This study evaluates the implication of cation exchange resin loading on the membrane via the nonsolvent-induced phase inversion method. After determining the quantity of resins efficiently loaded on the membrane, it was subsequently utilized as a cation exchange membrane in the membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) unit to examine the performance removal of Ni2+. The results show that the amount of resins influenced the membrane structure and significantly improved the efficiency of Ni2+ removal. The sulfonic acid group show a strong intensity directly proportional to the quantity of resins based on the FTIR measurement. In conjunction with the enhanced resin amount, ion exchange capacity and water content were increased. Simultaneously, there was an observed elevation in the water contact angle and the roughness of the membrane surface with increased resin amount. In the MCDI unit, membrane M20 (20% by weight resin) was employed to elucidate its roles in the CDI unit, encompassing an examination of various concentrations and flow rates, with Ni2+ utilized as a test contaminant. The results demonstrated that using membrane M20 in the MCDI (MCDI-M20) unit consistently exhibited higher adsorption levels than the CDI unit, reaching 19.80 mg g-1 ACC in the MCDI-M20 unit, while CDI unit achieved 10.27 mg g-1 ACC at 200 mg L-1 Ni2+ concentration and a flow rate of 10 mL min-1 at 1.2 V. Additionally, Ni2+ concentrations and flow rates in CDI system had an evident impact on the duration of adsorption due to the mechanisms of ions transport on the membrane. This study suggests that employing the prepared membrane in the MCDI unit enhanced the removal of Ni2+ from the solution, contributing to sustainable development goals.

Bread Consumption-Induced Heavy Metal Exposures and Health Risk Assessment of Pregnant Women: Turkey

Affordable, nutritious, and easily available bread has a significant place in the nutrition of pregnant women. This study aims to determine bread consumption-induced heavy metal exposure in pregnant women with different sociodemographic characteristics living in Turkey and to evaluate it for non-carcinogenic health risks. Bread consumption data of pregnant women covered a retrospective 24-h period. Heavy metal exposure was calculated according to the deterministic model. Non-carcinogenic health risk assessment was evaluated by target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI). Bread consumption-induced Mn, Al, Cu, Ni, Pb, As, Cr, Co, Cd, and Hg exposures of all pregnant women (n = 446) were 44.0, 25.0, 6.62, 0.69, 0.15, 0.06, 0.04, 0.03, 0.03, and < 0.00 µg/kg bw/day, respectively. Bread consumption-induced Mn exposure was higher than the tolerable daily intake level. The HI (1.37 [Formula: see text] 1.71) related to bread consumption is greater than 1 in all pregnant women in different age groups and trimesters and bread consumption may cause some health concerns in terms of non-carcinogenic health risks for pregnant women. The bread consumption can be limited, but bread consumption should not be abandoned.

A wide survey of heavy metals-induced in-vitro DNA replication stress characterized by rate-limited replication

Heavy metals (HMs) are environmental pollutants that pose a threat to human health and have been accepted to cause various diseases, including cancer and developmental disorders. DNA replication stress has been identified to be associated with such diseases. However, the effect of HMs exclusively on DNA replication stress is still not well understood. In this study, DNA replication stress induced by thirteen HMs was assessed using a simplified in-vitro DNA replication model. Two parameters, Cte/Ctc reflecting the cycle threshold value alteration and Ke/Kc reflecting the linear phase slope change, were calculated based on the DNA replication amplification curve to evaluate the rate of exponential and linear phases. These parameters were used to detect the replication rate reflecting in-vitro DNA replication stress induced by tested HMs. According to the effective concentrations and rate-limiting degree, HMs were ranked as follows: Hg, Ce > Pb > Zn > Cr > Cd > Co > Fe > Mn, Cu, Bi, Sr, Ni. Additionally, EDTA could relieve the DNA replication stress induced by some HMs. In conclusion, this study highlights the potential danger of HMs themselves on DNA replication and provides new insight into the possible links between HMs and DNA replication-related diseases.

Silicon dioxide nanoparticles enhance plant growth, photosynthetic performance, and antioxidants defence machinery through suppressing chromium uptake in Brassica napus L

Chromium (Cr) is a highly toxic heavy metal that is extensively released into the soil and drastically reduces plant yield. Silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) were chosen to mitigate Cr toxicity due to their ability to interact with heavy metals and reduce their uptake. This manuscript explores the mechanisms of Cr-induced toxicity and the potential of Si NPs to mitigate Cr toxicity by regulating photosynthesis, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defence, along with the role of transcription factors and heavy metal transporter genes in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). Rapeseed plants were grown hydroponically and subjected to hexavalent Cr stress (50 and 100 μM) in the form of K2Cr2O7 solution. Si NPs were foliar sprayed at concentrations of 50, 100 and 150 μM. The findings showed that 100 μM Si NPs under 100 μM Cr stress significantly increased the leaf Si content by 169% while reducing Cr uptake by 92% and 76% in roots and leaves, respectively. The presence of Si NPs inside the plant leaf cells was confirmed by using energy-dispersive spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma‒mass spectrometry, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The study's findings showed that Cr had adverse effects on plant growth, photosynthetic gas exchange attributes, leaf mesophyll ultrastructure, PSII performance and the activity of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants. However, Si NPs minimized Cr-induced toxicity by reducing total Cr accumulation and decreasing oxidative damage, as evidenced by reduced ROS production (such as H2O2 and MDA) and increased enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant activities in plants. Interestingly, Si NPs under Cr stress effectively increased the NPQ, ETR and QY of PSII, indicating a robust protective response of PSII against stress. Furthermore, the enhancement of Cr tolerance facilitated by Si NPs was linked to the upregulation of genes associated with antioxidant enzymes and transcription factors, alongside the concurrent reduction in metal transporter activity.

Accurate identification of sludge contamination sources by classification-based PMF and machine learning with consideration of sewer network distribution differences

The application of source identification such as PMF for large-scale pollution source analysis frequently produces ambiguous outcomes. In this study, we utilized a classification-based method to accurately track key pollution sources in the sludge. In the study, we categorized the wastewater treatment plants into two groups: T1 and T2, according to the pipeline network. T1 sewage treatment plants are the main sewage plants in urban areas, covering a large area and connected to industrial wastewater treatment plants for secondary treatment. T2 sewage treatment plants are typically smaller in size and usually responsible for treating sewage in rural or township areas. The PMF analysis indicates that industrial pollution sources contribute 3.4 times more to T1 sludge than to T2 sludge, making industrial pollution the primary factor causing the disparity. The application of Random Forest and Adaboost based on pollutant concentrations for classification and fitting of sludge resulted in the identification of the main pollutants: Zn, Cu, Ni, and Cyanide, which align with characteristic pollutants from the electroplating industry. The GIS analysis shows a significant correlation between the distance of wastewater treatment plants with abnormal environmental risk and electroplating industrial parks, all within a 20 km radius. Indeed, when conducting large-scale pollution source identification studies, utilizing classification-based analysis can effectively improve the accuracy of pollution source identification, leading to more valuable analysis results.

Adsorption of Sb(III) and Pb(II) in wastewater by magnetic γ-Fe2O3-loaded sludge biochar: Performance and mechanisms

Magnetically modified carbon-based adsorbent (BC@γ-Fe2O3) was prepared through facile route using activated sludge biomass and evaluated for the simultaneous removal of Sb(III) and Pb(II). BC@γ-Fe2O3 exhibited outstanding Sb(III) and Pb(II) adsorption capacity when 200 mg of adsorbent was employed at pH 5.0 for 240 min, with the removal efficiency higher than 90%. The experiments demonstrated the excellent reusability and the potent anti-interference properties of the prepared absorbent. Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic were prior to describe the adsorption process. The adsorption of Sb(III) and Pb(II) onto BC@γ-Fe2O3 was spontaneous and endothermic. BC@γ-Fe2O3 with high specific surface area revealed the exceptional competence to absorb Sb(III) and Pb(II) through pore filling, electrostatic adsorption and complexation. The adsorption mechanisms of Sb(III) and Pb(II) showed similarities with slight disparities. The removal of Sb(III) involved the Fe-O-Sb bond and π-π bond, while the adsorption of Pb(II) was closely related to ion exchange. Moreover, Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V) in a minor part during adsorption. The Fe-O-Cl active sites on BC allowed for the binding of γ-Fe2O3, guaranteeing the abundant adsorption sites and stability. BC@γ-Fe2O3 provides an efficient and green insight into the simultaneous removal of complex heavy metals with promising application in wastewater treatment.

Micro- and nanoplastics interact with conventional pollutants on microalgae: Synthesis through meta-analysis

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) have been found to occur intensively in aquatic environments, along with other conventional pollutants (Po) such as heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, etc. However, our understanding of how MNPs and Po interact on aquatic primary producers is fragmented. We performed a quantitative meta-analysis based on 933 published experimental assessments from 44 studies to examine the coupled effects of MNPs and Po on microalgae. Although the results based on interaction type frequency (the proportion of each interaction type in all results) revealed dominantly additive interactions (56%) for overall physiological performance, an overall antagonistic effect was observed based on the mean interaction effect sizes. A higher proportion of antagonistic interaction type frequency was found in marine species compared to fresh species. The antagonistic effects were particularly significant for growth, oxidative responses, and photosynthesis, which could be attributed to the adsorption effect of MNPs on Po and thus the decreasing concentrations of pollutants in the medium. Larger-sized, negatively charged or uncharged and aged MNPs had higher proportions of antagonistic effects compared to smaller-sized, positively charged and virgin MNPs, due to their stronger adsorption capacity to Po. This study provides a comprehensive insight into the interactive effects of MNPs and Po on microalgae.

Alleviation of cadmium toxicity in pea (Pisum sativum L.) through Zn-Lys supplementation and its effects on growth and antioxidant defense

Cadmium significantly impacts plant growth and productivity by disrupting physiological, biochemical, and oxidative defenses, leading to severe damage. The application of Zn-Lys improves plant growth while reducing the stress caused by heavy metals on plants. By focusing on cadmium stress and potential of Zn-Lys on pea, we conducted a pot-based study, organized under completely randomized block design CRD-factorial at the Botanical Garden of Government College University, Faisalabad. Both pea cultivars were grown in several concentrations of cadmium @ 0, 50 and 100 μM, and Zn-Lys were exogenously applied @ 0 mg/L and 10 mg/L with three replicates for each treatment. Cd-toxicity potentially reduces plant growth, chlorophyll contents, osmoprotectants, and anthocyanin content; however, an increase in MDA, H2O2 initiation, enzymatic antioxidant activities as well as phenolic, flavonoid, proline was observed. Remarkably, exogenously applied Zn-Lys significantly enhanced the plant growth, biomass, photosynthetic attributes, osmoprotectants, and anthocyanin contents, while further increase in enzymatic antioxidant activities, total phenolic, flavonoid, and proline contents were noticed. However, application of Zn-Lys instigated a remarkable decrease in levels of MDA and H2O2. It can be suggested with recommendation to check the potential of Zn-Lys on plants under cadmium-based toxic soil.

AI-enhanced adsorption modeling: Challenges, applications, and bibliographic analysis

Inorganic and organic contaminants, such as fertilisers, heavy metals, and dyes, are the primary causes of water pollution. The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has received significant interest due to its capacity to address challenges across various fields. The use of AI techniques in water treatment and desalination has recently shown useful for optimising processes and dealing with the challenges of water pollution and scarcity. The utilization of AI in the water treatment industry is anticipated to result in a reduction in operational expenditures through the lowering of procedure costs and the optimisation of chemical utilization. The predictive capabilities of artificial intelligence models have accurately assessed the efficacy of different adsorbents in removing contaminants from wastewater. This article provides an overview of the various AI techniques and how they can be used in the adsorption of contaminants during the water treatment process. The reviewed publications were analysed for their diversity in journal type, publication year, research methodology, and initial study context. Citation network analysis, an objective method, and tools like VOSviewer are used to find these groups. The primary issues that need to be addressed include the availability and selection of data, low reproducibility, and little proof of uses in real water treatment. The provision of challenges is essential to ensure the prospective success of AI associated with technologies. The brief overview holds importance to everyone involved in the field of water, encompassing scientists, engineers, students, and stakeholders.

Effects of biochar layer position on treatment performance and microbial community in subsurface flow constructed wetlands for removal of cadmium and lead

Levels of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) correspond to common composition in acid mine wastewater of Hunan Province of China. The removal path of Cd and Pb and the structure of microbial community were investigated by developing constructed wetlands (CWs) with different layer positions of biochar. The biochar as a layer at the bottom of CW (BCW) system exhibited maximum Cd and Pb removal efficiencies of 96.6-98.6% and 97.2-98.9%, respectively. Compared with original soil, BCW increased the relative proportions of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Acidobacteriota, Verrucomicrobiota, Desulfobacterota, Armatimonadota, Bacteroidota, Patescibacteria, Basidiomycota (phylum level) and Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia, Citrifermentans, Chthonomonadales, Cellulomonas, Geothrix, Terracidiphilus, Gallionellaceae, Microbacterium, Vanrija, Apiotrichum, Saitozyma, Fusarium (genus level). The concentrations of Cd and Pb were positively correlated with the abundance of Verrucomicrobiota, Basidiomycota (phylum level), and Methylacidiphilaceae, Meyerozyma, Vanrija (genus level). This study demonstrates that BCW system can improve removal performance toward Cd and Pb, as well as alter microbial community.

Accumulation of copper and lead in ruminants grazing on a contaminated shooting range in Nordland County, Norway

Shooting ranges contain copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) contamination, which can be a risk for grazing ruminants. This study examines the accumulation of lead and copper in blood of lambs and calves, as well as in the liver of lambs. It compares these results with those of a previous study, which calculated the ingested dose of copper and lead based on soil ingestion and concentration in soil and plants. Blood samples were collected both before and after the grazing period that lasted from late May to mid-September. Liver samples were obtained during the slaughter of the lambs in the fall. Out of 61 liver samples, only one (3.7 mg Pb/kg dw) exceeding the presumed normal level in lamb liver of 3 mg/kg (dw). Copper concentrations exceeding the normal (300 mg/kg dw) concentration was found in 14 of the liver samples (341-1877 mg Cu/kg dw). Among these, two liver samples (1069 and 1877 mg Cu/kg dw) exceeded the level at which sheep are poisoned (1000 mg/kg dw). There was no statistically significant difference in the copper and lead concentration in liver of lambs that did and did not have the shooting range as part of their pasture. The average concentration of copper (lamb: 1.1 ± 0.37 µg Cu/g, calves: 0.6 ± 0.16 µg Cu/g) and lead (lamb: 0.010 ± 0.008 µg Pb/g calves: 0.01 ± 0.014 µg Pb/g) in the blood samples collected from the lambs and calves did not exceed the upper limit of what is considered normal (sheep: 1.35 mg Cu/kg and 0.3 mg Pb/kg, cattle: 1.7 mg Cu/kg and 0.35 mg Pb/kg). Copper concentration in the blood was notably higher in samples collected from the sheep before (1.3 ± 0.35 µg Cu/g) compared to after (0.8 ± 0.22 µg Cu/g) the grazing period. No statistically significant difference was found in lead and copper concentrations in the blood of lambs and calves grazing inside (lamb: 0.7 ± 0.21 µg Cu/g and 0.01 ± 0.008 µg Pb/g, calves: 0.6 ± 0.16 µg Cu/g and 0.02 ± 0.020 µg Pb/g) and outside (lamb: 0.9 ± 0.21 µg Cu/g and 0.13 ± 0.008 µg Pb/g, calves: 0.6 ± 0.17 µg Cu/g and 0.009 µg Pb/g) the shooting range. Grazing on areas contaminated by shooting activity did not appear to have any major implications for the accumulation of copper and lead in blood of cattle and sheep, as well as in the liver of sheep. The findings from this study indicate that employing site specific risk assessments for ruminants incorporating soil ingestion represents a viable approach.

Effects of different cellular and subcellular characteristics on the atmospheric Pb uptake, distribution and morphology in Tillandsia usneoides leaves

Lead (Pb) is a widespread highly toxic and persistent environmental pollutant. Plant leaves play a key role in accumulating atmospheric Pb, but its distribution in different cells and subcellular structures and the factors affecting it have been little studied. Here, Tillandsia usneoides, an indicator plant for atmospheric heavy metals, was treated with an aerosol generation device to analyze Pb contents in different cells (three types of cells in leaf surface scales, epidermal cells, mesophyll cells, vascular bundle cells), subcellular structures (cell wall, cell membrane, vacuoles, and organelles) and cell wall components (pectin, hemicellulose 1 and 2, and cellulose). Results show the different cells of T. usneoides leaves play distinct roles in the process of Pb retention. The outermost wing cells are structures that capture external pollutants, while mesophyll cells, as the aggregation site after material transport, ring cells, disc cells, epidermal cells, and vascular cells are material transporters. Pb was only detected in the cell wall and pectin, indicating the cell wall was the dominant subcellular structure for Pb retention, while pectin was the main component affecting Pb retention. FTIR analysis of cell wall components indicated the esterified carboxyl (CO) functional group in pectin may function in absorbing Pb. Pb entered leaf cells mainly in the form of low toxicity and activity to enhance its resistance.

Unravelling groundwater contamination and health-related implications in semi-arid and cold regions of India

Groundwater, a vital global resource, is essential for sustaining life and various human activities. However, its quality and availability face increasing threats from both natural and human-induced factors. Widespread contamination, arising from both natural origins and human activities such as agriculture, industry, mining, improper waste disposal, and wastewater release, poses significant risks to human health and water security. India, known for its dense population and pronounced groundwater challenges, serves as a prominent case study. Notably, in most of its regions, groundwater resources have been found to be severely contaminated by various chemical, biological, and radioactive contaminants. This review presents an examination of contamination disparities across various states of semi-arid and cold regions, encompassing diverse assessment methods. The studies conducted in semi-arid regions of North, South, West, and East India highlight the consistent presence of fluorides and nitrates majorly, as well as heavy metals in some areas, with values exceeding the permissible limits recommended by both the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the World Health Organization (WHO). These contaminants pose skeletal and dental threats, methemoglobinemia, and even cancer. Similarly, in cold regions, nitrate exposure and pesticide residues, reportedly exceeding BIS and WHO parameters, pose gastrointestinal and other waterborne health concerns. The findings also indicated that the recommended limits of several quality parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness, and total alkalinity majorly surpassed. Emphasising the reported values of the various contaminant levels simultaneously with addressing the challenges and future perspectives, the review unravels the complex landscape of groundwater contamination and its health-related implications in semi-arid and cold regions of India.

Strength and leaching behavior of tailing-based paste backfill at high water content amended with lime activated ground granulated blast furnace slag and flocculant

Flocculent is commonly used in mining activities to improve the concentration of tailing slurry by enhancing the sedimentation process of small tailings particles. The presence of flocculent in thickened tailings is unavoidable, and it affects the heavy metal leaching performances and mechanical and rheological characteristics of tailing-based cemented paste backfill (CPB). This study is carried out to investigate the physicochemical and leachability of CPB amended with flocculants and lime-activated ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS). The stabilized samples were subjected to a series of model tests, including toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) and pH, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the CPB amended with anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) demonstrated better performance in terms of a decrease in heavy metal leachability besides higher mechanical strength than poly aluminum chloride (PAC) and poly ferric chloride (PFC) samples. Furthermore, the UCS results showed that increasing binder content up to 15% negatively influences strength improvement of all stabilized samples because of weak connections between soil particles and cementitious material, resulting in high leachability of heavy metals. The analysis of XRD and SEM showed that anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) cases exhibited more voluminous hydration products, resulting in a compact stabilized matrix and substantially reduced heavy metal leachability.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals in wild fish and seasonal variation and source identification of heavy metals in sediments: a case study of typical urban river in Xi'an, China

In order to determine the status of heavy metal pollution in river sediments and wild fish in Xi'an, concentrations of heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb) were collected and analyzed in sediments and wild fish during dry season (October-November 2020) and wet season (June-July 2021). This study aimed to investigate the spatial and temporal variations of heavy metals in urban rivers of Xi'an, China. Their distribution characteristics and sources as well their pollution levels and health risks were assessed. The findings revealed that influenced by human activities, the heavy metal content in sediments (mg·kg-1 dry weight) in wet season was ranked as follows: Cr (73.09) > Zn (63.73) > Pb (40.31) > Ni (31.52) > Cu (24.86) > As (6.83); in the dry season: Zn (94.07) > Cr (69.59) > Cu (34.24) > Ni (33.60) > Pb (32.87) > As (7.60). Moreover, 32 fish samples from six species indicated an average metal content trend (mg·kg-1 wet weight) of Zn (8.70) > Cr (0.57) > Pb (0.28) > Ni (0.27) > Cu (0.24) > As (0.05). The potential ecological risk indices for sediment heavy metal concentrations in both seasons were well below the thresholds, which indicates that the aquatic environment is in safe level. The analysis of the potential ecological risk of sediment heavy metal concentrations indicates that the aquatic environment is safe for the time being. Based on the estimated daily intake (EDI), target risk quotient (THQ), total target risk quotient (TTHQ), cancer risk (CR), total cancer risk (TCR), and the permissible safety limits set by the agencies, the consumption of the fish examined is safe for human health. However, the presence of Cr and As in wild fish should still be a concern for human health, especially for children. The cumulative effect of heavy metals and the bioconcentration factor (BCF) suggest that sediment and heavy metals in fish are closely related, with higher concentrations in fish living in the bottom layer of the water column than in other water layers, and increasing with increasing predator levels. Correlation analysis and PMF modeling identified and determined four comparable categories of potential sources, namely, (1) atmospheric deposition and traffic sources, (2) agricultural sources, (3) industrial sources, and (4) natural sources.

Efficient adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+ from groundwater by MgO-modified sludge biochar in single and binary systems

In this study, MgO-modified sludge biochar (1MBC) prepared from sewage sludge was successfully used as an efficient adsorbent to remove heavy metals from groundwater. The adsorption performance and mechanism of 1MBC on Cu2+ and Cd2+ were investigated in single and binary systems, and the contribution of different mechanisms was quantified. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms analysis revealed that the adsorption processes of Cu2+ and Cd2+ by 1MBC followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model in both systems, indicating that Cu2+ and Cd2+ were mainly controlled by chemisorption, and their theoretical maximum adsorption capacities were 240.36 and 219.06 mg·g-1, respectively. The results of the binary system showed that due to the competitive adsorption, the adsorption capacity of 1MBC for both heavy metals was lower than that of the single system, and the selective adsorption of Cu2+ was higher. The influencing variable experiments revealed that the adsorption of Cu2+ and Cd2+ by 1MBC had a wide pH adaption range and strong anti-interference ability to coexisting organics and ions. The adsorption mechanisms involved ion exchange (Cu: 47.39%, Cd: 53.17%), mineral precipitation (Cu: 35.31%, Cd: 24.18%), functional group complexation (Cu: 10.44%, Cd: 14.53%), and other possible mechanisms (Cu: 6.87%, Cd: 8.12%). Furthermore, 1MBC demonstrated excellent regeneration potential after five cycle times. Overall, the results have significant reference value for the practical application of removing heavy metals.

Physiological and biochemical characteristics of high and low Cd accumulating Brassica napus genotypes

Phytoremediation is a widely used and cost-effective technique for in situ remediation of heavy metals. Brassica napus L. genotype with high Cd accumulation and strong Cd tolerance is an ideal candidate for phytoremediation. In this study, a hydroponic experiment was conducted to select a Brassica napus genotype with either high or low Cd accumulation from a panel of 55 genotypes. The physiological mechanisms governing Cd accumulation and Cd tolerance were then explored. BN400 and BN147 were identified as the high and low Cd accumulating genotypes, respectively. Additionally, BN400 exhibited greater tolerance to Cd stress compared to BN147. Root morphology analysis revealed that BN400 exhibited longer root length, smaller root surface area and root volume, and less root tips but bigger root diameter than BN147. Subcellular Cd distribution showed that the Cd concentrations in the cell wall and vacuole in shoot were significantly higher in BN400 than in BN147, whereas the opposite trend was observed in the roots.. Pectate/protein-integrated Cd was found to be the predominant form of Cd in both shoots and roots, with significantly higher levels in BN400 compared to BN147 in the shoot, but the opposite trend was observed in the roots. These results suggest that the long fine roots play a role in Cd accumulation. The high Cd accumulating genotype was able to retain Cd in leaf cell walls and vacuoles, and Cd was mainly present in the form of pectate/protein-integrated Cd, which contributes to its strong Cd tolerance. These findings have important implications for the screening and breeding of Brassica napus genotypes with high Cd accumulation for phytoremediation purposes.

Evaluation of some heavy metals and selenium pollution in Karataş Lake (Burdur/Türkiye) using various pollution indices and statistical analysis

Wetland face environmental problems due to some reasons such as drought, rapid population and rapid developments in technology. Karataş Lake is located within the Lakes Region in Türkiye and has also of great economically, ecologically and ornithologically importance. Unfortunately, it completely dried out in 2021 due to sufficient rainfall, groundwater withdrawal and global climate change. In 2022, the lake started to hold water again. This study is important because it is one of the last studies before the lake dries up and first study to evaluate some heavy metals and selenium pollution using some indices. In this study, which was carried out between October 2019-July 2020, some heavy metals and selenium concentrations were determined in water of Karataş Lake seasonally and evaluated pollution degree of lake water using some indices and statistical analysis. Water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen levels were measured in situ using YSI 556 MPS. For heavy metal analysis, water samples were taken, acidified to a pH of <2, stored at 4 °C and analyzed directly using ICP-OES (Agilent 5110). Pb and Se in all seasons were below detection limit. The analyzed metals sorted as; Cd < Mo < Cr < Cu < Mn < Zn < Ni < Fe. Generally, heavy metals were increased in autumn and decreased in spring. According to some water quality standards for drinking water, Fe levels were higher than the permissible levels for drinking water in all seasons (TSE, 2005; EPA, 2018; EU, 2020), Mn in autumn (TSE, 2005; EPA, 2018; EU, 2020), Ni in autumn and summer (TSE, 2005; EU, 2020). Water Quality Index (WQI), Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI) and Heavy Metal Evaluation Index (HEI) values were calculated in Karataş Lake to determine pollution degree. Depend on WQI results, lake water was in good category in autumn, winter and spring while poor category in summer. The lake water samples based on HPI and HEI values are in the low contamination category. The lake is still struggling with environmental problems. If necessary precautions are not taken for the future of the lake, the lake may dry out again. The results of this study will help the authorities in terms of preventing re-drying, sustainability of the lake and management of the region. This study will be also a reference for future studies.

Protein S-palmitoylation enhances profibrotic signaling in response to cadmium

Cadmium (Cd) is a naturally occurring, toxic environmental metal found in foods. Humans do not have an efficient mechanism for Cd elimination; thus, Cd burden in humans increases with age. Cell and mouse studies show that Cd burden from low environmental levels of exposure impacts lung cell metabolism, proliferation signaling and cell growth as part of disease-promoting profibrotic responses in the lungs. Prior integrative analysis of metabolomics and transcriptomics identified the zDHHC11 transcript as a central functional hub in response to Cd dose. zDHHC11 encodes a protein S-palmitoyltransferase, but no evidence is available for effects of Cd on protein S-palmitoylation. In the present research, we studied palmitoylation changes in response to Cd and found increased protein S-palmitoylation in human lung fibroblasts that was inhibited by 2-bromopalmitate (2-BP), an irreversible palmitoyltransferase inhibitor. Mass spectrometry-based proteomics showed palmitoylation of proteins involved in divalent metal transport and in fibrotic signaling. Mechanistic studies showed that 2-BP inhibited palmitoylation of divalent metal ion transporter ZIP14 and also inhibited cellular Cd uptake. Transcription analyses showed that Cd stimulated transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 and β3 expression within 8 h and lung fibrotic markers α-smooth muscle actin, matrix metalloproteinase-2, and collagen 1α1 gene expression and that these effects were blocked by 2-BP. Because 2-BP also blocked palmitoylation of proteins controlled by TGFβ1, these results show that palmitoylation impacts Cd-dependent fibrotic signaling both by enhancing cellular Cd accumulation and by supporting post-translational processing of TGFβ1-dependent proteins.

Risk assessment of heavy metals in agricultural soil based on the coupling model of Monte Carlo simulation-triangular fuzzy number

Soils in areas wherein agriculture and mining coexist are experiencing serious heavy metal contamination, posing a great threat to the ecological environment and human health. In this study, heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in agricultural soil samples from mining areas were analyzed to explore pollution status, bioavailability, potential sources, and ecological/health risks. Particularly, the coupling model of Monte Carlo simulation-triangular fuzzy number (MCS-TFN) was established to quantify ecological/health risks accurately. Results showed that Cd was heavily enriched in soil and had the highest bioavailability based on both geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and chemical speciation analysis. Pollution sources apportioned with the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model demonstrated that heavy metals were mainly derived from agricultural activities, followed by mining activities and natural sources. The MCS-TFN ecological risk assessment classified Cd into the high-risk category with a probability of 40.96%, whereas other heavy metals were categorized as the low risk. Cd was regarded as the major pollutant for the ecosystem. Moreover, the MCS-TFN health risk assessment indicated that As showed high noncarcinogenic risk (0.07% probability) and moderate carcinogenic risk (1.87% probability), and Cd presented low carcinogenic risk (80.19% probability). As and Cd were identified as the main heavy metals that pose a threat to human health. The MCS-TFN risk assessment is superior to the traditional deterministic risk assessment since it can obtain the risk level and the corresponding probability, and significantly reduce the uncertainty in risk assessment.

Consumption of foods contaminated with heavy metals and their association with cardiovascular disease (CVD) using GAM software (cohort study)

Introduction

Heavy metals can enter the environment and food through industrial activities, acid rain, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage. A large amount of these metals is dangerous because they tend to bio accumulate. A concern with these metals is the long-term, low-dose exposure seen in the general population. HMs can cause disorders in the cardiovascular system through various mechanisms such as the production of free radicals, DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, and oxidative stress.

Material and method

Food items measured in the present study included rice, bread, and vegetables. 210 participants (105 controls and 105 patients) were randomly selected for this study. The demographic information of the subjects was obtained from the Hoveyzeh Cohort Center. The relationship between heavy metals in food and cardiovascular diseases is investigated by The Generalized Additive Model (GAM).

Result

The results of the present study showed that when urine Cd was smoothed based on rice Cd, there was a significant correlation between urine Cd and Cd consumed in vegetables and rice. The GAM coefficient for urinary Cd excreted in case-control groups and Cd consumed in vegetables were 479.79(SE: 6.49-73.87) and 818.56(SE: 11.96-68.43), respectively, and for rice consumed, it was 0.03(SE: 0.015-2.103) and 0.04(SE: 0.017-2.338), respectively. The GAM coefficient for As consumption in vegetables and As in urine of case and control groups was 1.61 (SE: 9.48-0.16) and 22.36 (SE: 13.60-1.64), respectively. The same coefficient for rice consumption in case and control groups was 4.5 (SE: 0.62-7.22) and 10.48 (SE: 1.46-7.16), respectively. There was a very strong and significant correlation between the Sr in the urine of both groups and the Sr in the food consumed, so that the urinary Sr in the control group is excreted more than in the cardiovascular group.

Conclusion

GAM analysis indicates that As in vegetable and rice is more than the standard limitation value. Also, Sr and Cd in vegetables, rice, and bread were more than the standard limitation value. According to the GAM model As had a significant value in rice and vegetables indicating that As is more than the standard limitation value, therefore, it is associated with CVD.

Evaluation of physical and chemical characteristics of wastewater and sludge of Zahedan urban wastewater treatment plant for reuse

Following the water shortage in the world, the use of wastewater as a sustainable resource has been considered in large volume. The study conducted to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of the wastewater and sludge of the Zahedan urban wastewater treatment plant showed that the wastewater and sludge treatment system of the treatment plant has high efficiency and effectiveness in removing the investigated parameters. The investigated parameters in the effluent included Chemical oxygen demand (COD), Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and Total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, temperature, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, pH, zinc, cobalt, lead and copper. Also, the investigated parameters in the sludge included Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), Mixed liquor volatile suspended solids (MLVSS), pH, electrical conductivity and heavy metals. The results showed that the average concentration of metals in the treated effluent is Zn > Mn > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cr > Cd ،and Chemical oxygen demand and Biochemical oxygen demand in the effluent of this treatment plant are on average 171 and 44.4 mg/L, respectively, and its discharge in surface water is limited, but it can be applied for agriculture. Also, the purified sludge had the necessary standards and could be used as soil or household fertilizer and compost for agricultural land.

Effect of red and blue light supplementation on the efficacy of Noccaea caerulescens in decontaminating metals and alleviating leaching risk

This study was conducted to investigate the impact of supplementing blue and red light on the biomass yield, metal uptake, contaminant purification, and the alleviation of leaching risks by Noccaea caerulescens, a well-known hyperaccumulator of Cd and Zn. As previously reported for the closely related Thlaspi arvense, N. caerulescens retarded the leaching of Cd and Zn but aggravated the leaching of Pb and Cu, because the species mobilized all metals in soil but only extracted Cd and Zn. Monochromic red light reduced the leaching of Pb and Cu by 13.8% and 1.3%, respectively, but simultaneously weakened Cd phytoremediation by reducing shoot biomass. Our results demonstrated that a small proportion of blue light (10%) could eliminate the negative effect of monochromatic red light on plant shoot growth. However, root biomass decreased by 14.3%, 26.2%, 21.4%, and 61.9% as the percentage of blue light increased from 10 to 100%. Noccaea caerulescens generated the most biomass and accumulated the highest metal concentrations, except for Pb, when the ratio of red to blue light was 1:1. In addition, leachate volume was significantly reduced under the 10% and 50% blue light treatments compared to other light treatments. Therefore, light supplementation with a suitable proportion of blue light can enhance metal purification by N. caerulescens and alleviate potential leaching risk during phytoremediation.
