Enhancement of antifouling properties, metal ions and protein separation of poly(ether-ether-sulfone) ultrafiltration membranes by incorporation of poly ethylene glycol and n-ZnO

Composite polymeric membranes with enhanced anti-fouling properties, antimicrobial activities and flux were produced via the phase inversion technique using poly (ether-ether-sulfone) (PEES)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) and n-ZnO. SEM and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy were used to study the morphological and chemical properties of the resulting ultrafiltration membranes. PEG and n-ZnO concentration has an effect on membrane morphologies, ultrafiltration performance, thermal characteristics, metal ion separation studies, surface hydrophilicity and anti-fouling capabilities. The permeate flux increased when the PEG concentration was raised. This results revealed that adding PEG and n-ZnO to membranes increased their surface hydrophilicity and anti-fouling properties. The inclusion of 1.5 wt % n-ZnO and 5 wt % PEG to the pristine PEES membrane resulted in a higher flux of 233.76 L m^-2 h^-1, 70.09 % of water content, 47.46° of contact angle, the porosity of 30.20 %, and hydraulic resistance of 0.22 kPa/Lm^-2h^-1. Anti-fouling properties of the fabricated membrane were assessed using a model foulant BSA, which revealed a high flux recovery ratio value. As a result, the PEG and n-ZnO incorporated membrane is more hydrophilic than the virgin membrane. In addition, the prepared PEES/PEG/n-ZnO membrane showed a significant increase in metal ions and protein rejection. Furthermore, an antibacterial test of the membrane revealed that the PEG and n-ZnO composite membrane outperformed the bare PEES membrane in terms of antibacterial capabilities. Overall, the findings reveal that combining n-ZnO and PEG resulted in a membrane with improved anti-fouling capabilities and hydrophilicity, making it suitable for water purification.

Electrodeionization: Principle, techniques and factors influencing its performance

Ecosystems are becoming more and more polluted, hence sustainable techniques of pollution removal are needed. In the recent times, exceedingly pure water has become ideal for several industries. Modern industry needs ultra-pure water, which is highly processed water that is devoid of colloidal particles and has a conductivity of less than 0.06 μS. A very effective method for removing ionic chemicals from polluted waters emerged recently called electrodeionization. Continuous electrodeionization (CEDI) is a technique for producing high-purity water. Besides rendering purified water, the technique has got promising wastewater treatment technologies - by facilitating the eradication of ionizable compounds, hazardous chemicals, radioactive pollutants, heavy metals and other potential contaminants. Innovative materials have been developed in order to advance and improve this technique, which would result in enormous ecological and financial benefit on a worldwide scale. In this review article, several factors that affect the performance of CEDI has been comprehended, with the impact of Ion-exchange resins and membranes as the focal point.

A recent update on green synthesized iron and iron oxide nanoparticles for environmental applications

Nanotechnology is considered the budding discipline in various fields of science and technology. In this review, the various synthesis methods of iron and iron oxide nanoparticles were summarised with more emphasis on green synthesis - a sustainable and eco-friendly method. The mechanism of green synthesis of these nanomaterials was reviewed in recent literature. The magnetic properties of these nanomaterials were briefed which makes them unique in the family of nanomaterials. An overview of various removal methods for the pollutants such as dye, heavy metals, and emerging contaminants using green synthesized iron and iron oxide nanoparticles is discussed. The mechanism of pollutant removal methods like Fenton-like degradation, photocatalytic degradation, and adsorption techniques was also detailed. The review is concluded with the challenges and possible future aspects of these nanomaterials for various environmental applications.

A review on landfill system for municipal solid wastes: Insight into leachate, gas emissions, environmental and economic analysis

Landfill is one of the common processes for removing and disposing waste materials that comprises the final method of disposing municipal solid waste. Disposal of municipal solid waste through land filling has become an important environmental problem all over the world which results in environmental contamination and pollution. Microbes present in the land act on the dumped materials and decompose the organic content present. The leachate from landfill is rich in organic, inorganic and suspended particles which may cause threat to ecosystem. The pollutants from leachate may be heavy metals, organic and inorganic content and organic compounds. The geological properties of soil get altered when leachate migrates. The physical, chemical and biological properties of the dumped material are determined by the decomposition of substances and microbes acting onto it. Trace gas emission may occur due to volatilization of chemical substances, degradation of waste materials and conversion reactions. The concentration of gas released varies from region to region of dumping, covered and uncovered dumped materials. The current review recommends an engineered landfill design helpful for landfill gas generation which replaces the fossil fuel as a compressed natural gas or liquefied natural gas. The landfill area is separated into organic and inorganic cells to scope at the objective of energy generation and resource recovery. However, the impact of these released gaseous emissions has been analyzed completely.

Evaluating the potential of engineered Trichoderma atroviride and its laccase-mediated system for the efficient bioconversion of 5-hydroxymethylfufural

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a fermentation inhibitor which is formed during acid-based thermochemical pre-treatment of biomass. The present study involves two approaches for HMF conversion; the first includes screening and identification of fungal strains which produce oxidoreductases for HMF bioconversion, and thereafter evaluating their roles in HMF conversion. Out of the ten fungal strains screened, genetically engineered Trichoderma atroviride (Lac⁺) showed maximum HMF bioconversion and the activities of ligninolytic enzymes produced were noted. Maximum HMF conversion of 99% was achieved at pH 5.0 and 30 °C when 72 h old 10% inoculum of T. atroviride (Lac⁺) was utilized for 6 days. Based on the fungal bioconversion of HMF to 2, 5 diformylfuran with 58% yield, laccase was observed to influence the conversion process. Thus, a comparative study was established on HMF conversion by 100 U/mL of commercial laccases and partially purified laccase from T. atroviride (Lac+). In the presence of TEMPO, T. atroviride laccase showed comparable HMF conversion to commercial laccases, which establishes the efficiency of fungi and ligninolytic enzymes in bioconversion of HMF to value-added products.

Recent advances in polymer composite, extraction, and their application for wastewater treatment: A review

Wastewater from diverse industrial sectors, agricultural practices and other household activities causes water pollution that result in different environmental issues. The main goals of wastewater treatment are typically to enhance the purity of wastewater and to enable the disposal of domestic and industrial effluents without endangering human health or causing excessive environmental issues. There were several natural and synthetic materials which have been utilized for wastewater treatment, amongst them polymers gain more importance due to their non-toxicity, economic feasibility, abundant availability of sources, renewability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, etc. The organic polymers such as cellulose, chitin, gelatin, alginates, lignin, dextran and other starch derivatives are the most commonly used natural polymers in wastewater treatments. The unique physical and chemical characteristics of the natural polymers make them become an alternative in wastewater treatments such as membrane filtration, adsorption, coagulation, flocculation and ion-exchange process to remove harmful contaminants such as toxic metals, dyes, medicines, pesticides, and so on. The review article discusses natural polymers and related uses in wastewater treatment. This review mainly focused on the wastewater treatment using natural polymers and the techniques involved for their extraction from natural sources. The recent trends in polymer extraction from the natural sources and the scope for the future research of natural polymers in various sectors are also discussed in detail.

Utilization of surface-active compounds derived from biosolids to remediate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contaminated sediment soil

In the present study, surface-active compounds (SAC) were extracted from biosolids using an alkaline treatment process. They were tested for their remediation efficiency of crude oil-contaminated sediment soil and was compared with Triton x-100. The SAC exhibited a similar soil washing efficiency to that of the commercial Triton x-100, and under the optimized soil washing parameters, SAC exhibited a maximum of 91% total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons removal. Further, on analysing the toxicity of the soil residue after washing, it was observed that SAC from biosolids washed soil exhibited an average of 1.5-fold lesser toxicity compared to that of Triton x-100 on different test models-earthworm, a monocot, and dicot plants. The analysis of the key soil parameters revealed that the commercial surfactant reduced the soil organic matter and porosity by an average of 1.3-fold compared to SAC. Further, the ability of surfactants to induce toxicity was confirmed by the adsorption of the surfactants on the surface of the soil particles which was in the order of Triton x-100 > SAC. Thus, this study suggests that SAC can be applied as an effective bioremediation approach for contaminated soil for a greener and sustainable ecosystem.

Iron doped activated carbon for effective removal of tartrazine and methylene blue dye from the aquatic systems: Kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and desorption studies

In the current research work, the activated carbon synthesized from the plant species Delonix regia is doped with iron oxide nanoparticles and enforced as a nanosorbent for the effective extermination of Tartrazine (TAR) and Methylene blue (MB) dyes. This nanosorbent is prepared from the bark powder of the Delonix regia and subjected to chemical activation; Furthermore, the synthesized biosorbent were characterized using FTIR, SEM, TGA, and XRD to understand their functional properties and structural morphology. The optimum effectiveness adsorption of Tartrazine and Methylene blue has been investigated by using different key parameters. The conclusions have shown the highest removal percentage at a pH of 3 and 6 for Tartrazine and Methylene blue, respectively. For the various initial concentrations, the adsorption percentage reached equilibrium after 60 min and 90 min for TAR and MB. The adsorption equilibrium values were applied to various isotherms models. The adsorbent showed a higher removal capacity of 357.142 mg g^-1 and 147.058 mg g^-1 and for MB and TAR respectively. The kinetic data were best fits to pseudo second order model. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that this adsorption process was found to be spontaneous, exothermic and feasible at different temperatures. These results have shown that the prepared adsorbent is an environmentally friendly and suitable material for the elimination of TAR and MB from water systems.

Biodegradation of textile dye Rhodamine-B by Brevundimonas diminuta and screening of their breakdown metabolites

The carcinogenic Rhodamine-B dye is recalcitrant which could cause serious hazards to human beings. Degradation with the application of unique bacterial strain is a sustainable technique. The bioremediation technique showed great potential to degrade a variety of recalcitrant pollutants like dyes. In this study, Brevundimonas diminuta, was selected for the breakdown of toxic textile dye Rhodamine-B. This bacterium showed 90-95% of degradation at the optimum conditions like 10 mg L^-1 of concentration of dye, pH 7 and temperature of 30 °C. Further UV-Visible spectrophotometry, FT-IR spectral scan, GC-MS analysis depicted the breakdown products like Methyl 18-fluoro-octadec-9-enoate, Methyl 18-fluoro-octadec-9-enoate and d-Homo-24-nor-17-oxachola-20,22-diene-3,16-dione,7-(acetyloxy)-1, 23 tri-epoxy-4,4,8-trimethyl. The degradation was confirmed by the changes in the functional groups, change in molecular weight and charge to-mass ratio. These results suggested that this strain is a deserving organism for the degradation of dye compounds.

Sustainable production of biohydrogen from algae biomass: Critical review on pretreatment methods, mechanism and challenges

Finally, the significant progressions and economical perspective on improving biohydrogen yield because of the expansion of co-substrates and the current trends are examined.

A review on biological methodologies in municipal solid waste management and landfilling: Resource and energy recovery

Rapid industrialization and urbanization growth combined with increased population has aggravated the issue of municipal solid waste generation. MSW has been accounted for contributing tremendously to the improvement of sustainable sources and safe environment. Biological processing of MSW followed by biogas and biomethane generation is one of the innumerable sustainable energy source choices. In the treatment of MSW, biological treatment has some attractive benefits such as reduced volume in the waste material, adjustment of the waste, economic aspects, obliteration of microorganisms in the waste material, and creation of biogas for energy use. In the anaerobic process the utilizable product is energy recovery. The current review discusses about the system for approaching conversion of MSW to energy and waste derived circular bioeconomy to address the zero waste society and sustainable development goals. Biological treatment process adopted with aerobic and anaerobic processes. In the aerobic process the utilizable product is compost. These techniques are used to convert MSW into a reasonable hotspot for resource and energy recovery that produces biogas, biofuel and bioelectricity and different results in without risk and harmless to the ecosystem. This review examines the suitability of biological treatment technologies for energy production, giving modern data about it. It likewise covers difficulties and points of view in this field of exploration.

A recent advancement on the applications of nanomaterials in electrochemical sensors and biosensors

Industrialization and globalization, both on an international and local scale, have caused large quantities of toxic chemicals to be released into the environment. Thus, developing an environmental pollutant sensor platform that is sensitive, reliable, and cost-effective is extremely important. In current years, considerable progress has been made in the expansion of electrochemical sensors and biosensors to monitor the environment using nanomaterials. A large number of emerging biomarkers are currently in existence in the biological fluids, clinical, pharmaceutical and bionanomaterial-based electrochemical biosensor platforms have drawn much attention. Electrochemical systems have been used to detect biomarkers rapidly, sensitively, and selectively using biomaterials such as biopolymers, nucleic acids, proteins etc. In this current review, several recent trends have been identified in the growth of electrochemical sensor platforms using nanotechnology such as carbon nanomaterials, metal oxide nanomaterials, metal nanoparticles, biomaterials and polymers. The integration strategies, applications, specific properties and future projections of nanostructured materials for emerging progressive sensor platforms are also observed. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview of nanoparticles in the field of electrochemical sensors and biosensors.

A review on current progress of graphene-based ternary nanocomposites in the removal of anionic and cationic inorganic pollutants

The current review aims to summarize the ongoing advances in high-performing graphene-based ternary nanocomposites for removing cationic and anionic inorganic pollutants. Graphene derivatives are extensively utilized for the development of composites due to their high synergism with co-functional materials, rational design, flexible surface chemistry, high mobile charge carriers, improved binding properties, and many more. The past ten years have witnessed progressive research on graphene-based ternary nanocomposites in a multitude of pollution remediation applications. Therefore, the focus falls on understanding how these ternary nanocomposites are tailored to capture the inorganic cationic and anionic contaminants with particular emphasis on graphene derivatives as base matrix and filler. The review investigates the synthesis, categorization, and characterization techniques of graphene-based ternary composites. Besides, the study broadens the understanding of the binding mechanism of the pollutants onto graphene ternary composites. The review also assesses the separation and recycling efficacy of the composites in detail. The future prospects in improving the practical application of the ternary systems also have been discussed. The comprehensive review on graphene based ternary systems detailing their structural and functional aspects, as well as their performance as inorganic decontaminants can provide deep insights for researchers in improvising wastewater treatment technologies.

As (III) removal using superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles synthesized using Ulva prolifera - optimization, isotherm, kinetic and equilibrium studies

In this study, magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized using the seaweed - Ulva prolifera, an amply found marine source in the Western coastal regions of India. The surface and other properties of MNPs were characterized by many sophisticated methods. Spherical nanoclusters were observed in the FESEM image and iron and oxygen elements were seen in EDS results. XRD peaks were consistent with magnetite standards and MNPs had good crystallinity. FTIR portrayed the specific signals for MNPs and TGA profile ascertained the thermal stability. Magnetic saturation of 41.84 emu/g with negligible hysteresis loop substantiated the superparamagnetism. XPS pointed out the presence of Fe and O with oxidation states specific for MNPs, and the results were consistent with EDS. BET revealed a high specific surface area (144.98 m²/g) of MNPs with mesopores. The synthesized MNPs were used as nanoadsorbent for the removal of As (III) from aqueous solution. The central composite design was used for optimizing As (III) adsorption on MNPs. The optimum conditions were found out as 97.5% at pH: 9, rotation speed: 150 rpm, time: 90 min, and MNPs dosage: 1.15 g/L. The adsorption process fitted in a better way with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. The highest adsorption capacity was 12.45 mg/g, which is substantially larger than the documenter reports. The spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption were ascertained from thermodynamic studies. The results suggested that the synthesized MNPs using the extract of U. prolifera could be alternative nanoadsorbents for eliminating toxic heavy metals from waste streams.

Reline deep eutectic solvent mediated synthesis of lanthanum titanate for heavy metal remediation and photocatalytic degradation

Toxic heavy metal and dye contamination are potential threats that mutilate the essential triad of life; air, water and soil. Despite commercial applicability and importance, the over accumulation of these noxious toxicants has become a disturbing concern. As a result, their remediation has drawn greater fascination leading to the inexplicable quest for a material which can act as both an adsorbent and as a photocatalyst. The present work highlights a novel solid-state technique assisted with reline (Choline chloride: Urea) deep eutectic solvent for the synthesis of lanthanum titanate. The synthesized material was established with physical characterizations like PXRD, FT-IR, UV-DRS, BET, XPS, HR-SEM and TEM techniques. Further, the ruptured petal-like lanthanum titanate was integrated as an adsorbent for the removal of lead (Pb), arsenic (As) and chromium (Cr) heavy metals. The adsorbent presented increased adsorption efficiencies of 96, 74 and 71% towards Pb, As and Cr respectively. Dependence of the degradation efficiency over concentration, pH, contact time and competitive environments were analyzed and inferred. Furthermore, lanthanum titanate was used for the photocatalytic degradation of reactive black (RB5), red (RR198) and yellow (RY145) dyes. The degradation efficiencies were found to be 68.31, 85.2 and 96.8% for RB5, RR198 and RY145 dyes respectively. Variation in concentration and pH of the dye solutions were examined and reaction kinetics was also proposed. In conclusion, the as synthesized lanthanum titanate is assured to play dual roles as a versatile cost-effective adsorbent for the remediation of heavy metals and as a potential candidate for photocatalytic degradation.

A detailed review on advanced oxidation process in treatment of wastewater: Mechanism, challenges and future outlook

The presence of several contaminants in waterbodies raises global pollution and creates major risks to mankind, wildlife, as well as other living organisms. Development of an effective, feasible, cost-effective and eco-friendly approach for treating wastewater that is discharged from various industries is important for bringing down the deposition of contaminants into environment. Advanced oxidation process is an efficient technique for treating wastewater owing to its advantages such as high oxidation efficacy and does not produce any secondary pollutants. Advanced oxidation process can be performed through various methods such as ozone, Fenton, electrochemical, photolysis, sonolysis, etc. These methods have been widely utilized for degradation of emerging pollutants that cannot be destroyed using conventional approaches. This review focuses on wastewater treatment using advanced oxidation process. A brief discussion on mechanism involved is provided. In addition, various types of advanced oxidation process and their mechanism are explained in detail. Challenges faced during wastewater treatment process using oxidation, electrochemical, Fenton, photocatalysis and sonolysis are discussed elaborately. Advanced oxidation process can be viewed as potential approach for treating wastewater with certain modifications and solving challenges.

A comprehensive review on the biological conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into hydrogen: Pretreatment strategy, technology advances and perspectives

The globe has dependent on energy generation and utilization for many years; conversely, ecological concerns constrained the world to view hydrogen as an alternative for economic development. Lignocellulosic biomass is broadly accessible as a low-cost renewable feedstock and nonreactive nature; it has received a lot of consideration as a global energy source and the most attractive alternative to replace fossil natural substances for energy production. Pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass is essential to advance its fragmentation and lower the lignin content for sustainable energy generation. This review's goal is to provide the different pretreatment strategies for enlarging the solubility and surface area of lignocellulosic biomass. The biological conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to hydrogen was reviewed and operational conditions and enhancing methods were discussed. This review summarizes the working conditions, parameters, yield percentages, techno-economic analysis, challenges, and future recommendations on the direct conversion of biomass to hydrogen.

CO2 bio-mitigation using genetically modified algae and biofuel production towards a carbon net-zero society

CO₂ sequestration carried by biological methodologies shows enhanced potential and has the advantage that biomass produced from the captured CO₂ can be used for different applications. Bio-mitigation of carbons through a micro-algal system addresses a promising and feasible option. This review mostly focused on the role of algae, particular mechanisms, bioreactors in algae cultivation, and genetically modified algae in CO₂ fixation and energy generation systems. A combination of CO₂ bio-mitigation and biofuel production might deliver an extremely promising alternative to current CO₂ mitigation systems. Bio mitigation in which the excess carbon is captured and bio fixation which the carbon is captured by algae or autotrophs and used for producing biofuel. This review revealed that steps for biofuel production from algae include factors affecting, harvesting techniques, oil extraction and transesterification. This review helps environmentalists and researchers to assess the effect of algae-based biorefinery on the green environment.

Coimmobilized enzymes as versatile biocatalytic tools for biomass valorization and remediation of environmental contaminants - A review

Due to stringent regulatory norms, waste processing faces confrontations and challenges in adapting technology for effective management through a convenient and economical system. At the global level, attempts are underway to achieve a green and sustainable treatment for the valorization of lignocellulosic biomass as well as organic contaminants in wastewater. Enzymatic treatment in the environmental aspect thrived on being the promising rapid strategy that appeased the aforementioned predicament. On that account, coimmobilization of various enzymes on single support enhances the catalytic activity ensuing operational stability with industrial applications. This review pivoted towards the coimmobilization of enzymes on diverse supports and their applications in biomass conversion to industrial value-added products and removal of contaminants in wastewater. The limelight of this study chronicles the unique breakthroughs in biotechnology for the production of reusable biocatalysts, which inculcating various enzymes towards the scope of environment application.

PbS/graphene hybrid nanostructures coated glassy carbon electrode for the electrochemical sensing of copper ions in aqueous solution

In this research, we have studied the electrochemical sensing of Cu(II) ions in aqueous solution using PbS/Graphene composite nanostructure coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The SEM-EDAX analysis revealed that the lead sulphide nanocrystals are homogeneously embedded on the graphene nanosheets with an uniform particle size of 100 nm, and the elements presents 92.32% and Lead content of 5.45% and Sulfur content of 0.91%. Raman spectra exhibits G with respect to the E2g sp² hybridized C-C and D band with respect to the A1g mode in the disordered edge region of the GNS. The composite nanostructure coated GCE (PbS/Graphene/GCE) was prepared and its performance in the existence of metal ions such us Cd(II),Pb(II), Mg(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II) was studied using the current voltage curves in double distilled water within the scan rates of 25 to 300mVs-¹. The PbS/Graphene coated carbon electrode exhibited the higher anodic and cathodic peak current for copper solution than the other metal ions studied, which various linearly proportional to concentration. The electrochemical sensing characteristics PbS/GNS/GCE was found to be significant towards detecting Cu²⁺ ion within the concentration range of 1 × 10^-4 to 1 × 10^-8 M, with a lowest sensing detection limit of 1 × 10^-8 M.

Maximization of growth and lipid production of a toxic isolate of Anabaena circinalis by optimization of various parameters with mathematical modeling and computational validation

Toxic cyanobacterial blooms are recurrent for few decades throughout the globe, due to climate change, atmospheric warming and various anthropogenic activities with severe impacts of potential toxins on various ecosystems finally affecting the entire environment. These cyanobacteria are merely unexplored regarding their biochemical components except toxins. Variable influences and interactions of different factors including nitrogen, carbon, and availability of light are well known to crucially regulate cyanobacterial growth and metabolism. Thus, current research work is motivated for the evaluation and optimization of the effects of the aforementioned vital factors for improvement of biomass and lipid production of a freshwater, toxic strain of Anabaena circinalis. The modelling and optimization of factors such as nitrogen, light intensity and bicarbonate concentration (source of carbon) to maximize growth and lipid production were based on 20 design point experiments by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and optimized values were further improved and validated by Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The maximum optima were obtained 1.829 g L^-1 and 39.64 % for biomass production and lipid content respectively from PSO optimization with two different sets of optimal values of factors. It shows 0.44 % and 2.77 % higher values of responses than that of RSM optimization. These asynchronous findings pioneered the enhanced lipid accumulation as well as the growth of a toxic cyanobacterium by optimizing interaction effects of culture conditions through various statistical and computational approaches.

Biosensor for heavy metals detection in wastewater: A review

Pollution due to heavy metals is a global issue in recent years. Initially, there were fewer contaminants, which has increased exponentially owing to rapid industrialization and various anthropogenic activities. Toxicity due to heavy metals causes a lot of health problems and organ system failure in human beings. It also affects other forms of living beings such as plants, animals and even the microbiota. This has been reported by various press reports and research findings. In this review, the production of heavy metals, associated effects on the environment and the technologies employed for detecting these heavy metals are comprehensively discussed. The analytical instruments, including biosensors, have been found to be more beneficial than other techniques. Biosensor exhibits numerous special features, such as reproducibility, reusability, linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Over the last three years, biosensors have also had a detection limit of 65.36 ng/mL for heavy metals. The design of biosensors, features and types were also explained in detail. The limit of detection for the heavy metals in wastewater using biosensors was also included with recent references up to the last five years.
