A critical review on microbes-based treatment strategies for mitigation of toxic pollutants

Contamination of the environment through toxic pollutants poses a key risk to the environment due to irreversible environmental damage(s). Industrialization and urbanization produced harmful elements such as petrochemicals, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, nanomaterials, and herbicides that are intentionally or unintentionally released into the water system, threatening biodiversity, the health of animals, and humans. Heavy metals (HMs) in water, for example, can exist in a variety of forms that are inclined by climate features like the presence of various types of organic matter, pH, water system hardness, transformation, and bioavailability. Biological treatment is an important tool for removing toxic contaminants from the ecosystem, and it has piqued the concern of investigators over the centuries. In situ bioremediation such as biosparging, bioventing, biostimulation, bioaugmentation, and phytoremediation and ex-situ bioremediation includes composting, land farming, biopiles, and bioreactors. In the last few years, scientific understanding of microbial relations with particular chemicals has aided in the protection of the environment. Despite intensive studies being carried out on the mitigation of toxic pollutants, there have been limited efforts performed to discuss the solutions to tackle the limitations and approaches for the remediation of heavy metals holistically. This paper summarizes the risk assessment of HMs on aquatic creatures, the environment, humans, and animals. The content of this paper highlights the principles and limitations of microbial remediation to address the technological challenges. The coming prospect and tasks of evaluating the impact of different treatment skills for pollutant remediation have been reviewed in detail. Moreover, genetically engineered microbes have emerged as powerful bioremediation capabilities with significant potential for expelling toxic elements. With appropriate examples, current challenging issues and boundaries related to the deployment of genetically engineered microbes as bioremediation on polluted soils are emphasized.

Protective Effect of Nanoselenium on Renal Oxidative Damage Induced by Mercury in Laying Hens

This study investigated the effects of dietary nanoselenium (nano-Se) supplementation protecting from renal oxidative damages induced by mercury (Hg) exposure in laying hens. Furthermore, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathway was explored to reveal the protective mechanism of nano-Se. A total of 576 40-week-old Hyline-White laying hens were randomly allocated to 4 groups with 6 pens per group and 24 hens per pen. The experimental groups were as follows: control (basal diet), control + 27.0 mg/kg Hg, control + 5.0 mg/kg nano-Se, and Hg27.0 + 5.0 mg/kg nano-Se. The results revealed that dietary Hg exposure significantly reduced laying performance (P < 0.05) and egg quality (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se supplementation partially reversed the reductions. Besides, dietary Hg exposure could induce histopathology damages and apoptosis in kidney, whereas nano-Se addition could alleviate these toxicities effectively. After Hg exposure, the activities and gene expressions of superoxidative dismutase (SOD) (P < 0.05), catalase (CAT) (P < 0.01), glutathione reductase (GR) (P < 0.05) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (P < 0.05), and glutathione (GSH) content (P < 0.05) were significantly decreased, while the malondialdehyde (MDA) level was significantly increased (P < 0.05) in kidney. However, nano-Se supplementation partially reversed the levels and gene expressions of these antioxidant biomarkers in kidney. Furthermore, dietary Hg exposure significantly increased the gene expressions of PERK (P < 0.05), ATF4 (P < 0.05), CHOP (P < 0.05), IRE1α (P < 0.05), TRAF2 (P < 0.05), ASK1 (P < 0.05), Caspase-9 (P < 0.05), Caspase-8 (P < 0.05), Caspase-3 (P < 0.05), and Bax/Bcl-2 (P < 0.05), whereas nano-Se supplementation partially reversed these increases of gene expressions. In summary, this study provides evidence that dietary Hg exposure can induce renal oxidative damages, and elucidates an important role of ER stress pathway in nano-Se alleviating renal apoptosis in laying hens.

Protein nanofibrils as versatile and sustainable adsorbents for an effective removal of heavy metals from wastewater: A review

Water is a valuable natural resource, which plays a crucial role in ecological survival as well as economic progress. However, the water quality has deteriorated in recent years as a result of urbanization, industrialization and human activities due to the uncontrolled release of industrial wastes, which can be extremely carcinogenic and non-degradable, in air, water and soil bodies. Such wastes showed the presence of organic and inorganic pollutants in high dosages. Heavy metals are the most obstinate contaminants, and they can be harmful because of having a variety of detrimental consequences to the ecosystem. The existing water treatment methods in many situations may not be sustainable or effective because of their high energy requirements and ecological impacts. In this review, state-of-the-art water treatment methods for the elimination of heavy metals with the help of protein nanofibrils are covered featuring a discussion on the strategies and possibilities of developing protein nanofibrils for the active elimination of heavy metals using kitchen waste as well as residues from the cattle, agriculture, and dairy industries. Further, the emphasis has been given to their environmental sustainability and economical aspects are also discussed.

Hypoxia and Alpha-Synuclein: Inextricable Link Underlying the Pathologic Progression of Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease, with typical motor symptoms as the main clinical manifestations. At present, there are about 10 million patients with PD in the world, and its comorbidities and complications are numerous and incurable. Therefore, it is particularly important to explore the pathogenesis of PD and find possible therapeutic targets. Because the etiology of PD is complex, involving genes, environment, and aging, finding common factors is the key to identifying intervention targets. Hypoxia is ubiquitous in the natural environment and disease states, and it is considered to be closely related to the etiology of PD. Despite research showing that hypoxia increases the expression and aggregation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn), the most important pathogenic protein, there is still a lack of systematic studies on the role of hypoxia in α-syn pathology and PD pathogenesis. Considering that hypoxia is inextricably linked with various causes of PD, hypoxia may be a co-participant in many aspects of the PD pathologic process. In this review, we describe the risk factors for PD, and we discuss the possible role of hypoxia in inducing PD pathology by these risk factors. Furthermore, we attribute the pathological changes caused by PD etiology to oxygen uptake disorder and oxygen utilization disorder, thus emphasizing the possibility of hypoxia as a critical link in initiating or promoting α-syn pathology and PD pathogenesis. Our study provides novel insight for exploring the pathogenesis and therapeutic targets of PD.

In Vivo Chemogenetic Biocompatibility of Mercury as a Specific Hypercalcemia Actuator in Snail's Spinal Cord Cell Manipulation: An Extracellular Field Potential Biosensor

The in vivo chemogenetic property of mercuric ions (Hg²⁺) was investigated as a specific hypercalcemia actuator in snail's spinal cord cell manipulation by extracellular field potential biosensing analysis. For this purpose, a three-microelectrode system with working, counter, and pseudo reference electrodes was blindly implanted into the snail's spinal cord to electrically stimulate (triggering) the action potential with a staircase electrical voltage at a very low frequency level, along with measurement of the electrical current, as a detection system. Under optimum conditions, using the one-factor-at-a-time method, a wide linear range between 1.0 × 10^-14 and 1.0 × 10^-1 mol L^-1 with correlation coefficients (R²) >0.98 and a response time (t₉₀) of maximum 10.0 s were approximated. Percentages of relative standard deviation were estimated to be 3.08 (reproducibility, n = 50) and 7.31 (repeatability, n = 15). The detection limit was estimated to be sub 2.1 × 10^-16 mol L^-1 based on the X_b^- + 3S_b definition. The reliability of this phenomenon was evidenced by the estimation of recovery percentages (between 95 and 107%) during spiking Hg²⁺ standard solutions. The probable mechanism behind this process could be attributed to the following: (i) the neuronal ephaptic coupling during electrical synchronization by a specific brain-triggered wave as a neuronal motor toolkit and (ii) chemical synchronization using a Hg²⁺ hypercalcemia actuator (biosensor). Linear correlation has been evidenced during interactions between Hg²⁺ and a calcium ionic channel's protein with a gram molecular weight of 66.2 ± 0.3 KCU. This process, therefore, caused an opening of the Ca²⁺ channel gates and majorly released the Ca²⁺ (hypercalcemia) that was detected as the main source of the measured electrical current. At this condition, ultratrace levels of Hg²⁺ ions not only were considered as nontoxic reagents but also had chemically regulating effects as ephaptic synchronizers to the neuron cells. This report may pave the way for using mercury ions at an ultratrace level for clinical controlling purposes during neuronal spinal cord cell manipulation.

Results of the BfR MEAL Study: In Germany, mercury is mostly contained in fish and seafood while cadmium, lead, and nickel are present in a broad spectrum of foods

The BfR MEAL Study provides representative levels of substances in foods consumed in Germany. Mercury, cadmium, lead, and nickel are contaminants present in foods introduced by environmental and industrial processes. Levels of these elements were investigated in 356 foods. Foods were purchased representatively, prepared as consumed and pooled with similar foods before analysis. Highest mean levels of mercury were determined in fish and seafood, while high levels of cadmium, lead, and nickel were present in cocoa products and legumes, nuts, oilseeds, and spices. The sampling by region, season, and production type showed minor differences in element levels for specific foods, however no tendency over all foods or for some food groups was apparent. The data on mercury, cadmium, lead, and nickel provide a comprehensive basis for chronic dietary exposure assessment of the population in Germany. All levels found were below regulated maximum levels.

Occurrence of Volcanogenic Inorganic Mercury in Wild Mice Spinal Cord: Potential Health Implications

Mercury accumulation has been proposed as a toxic factor that causes neurodegenerative diseases. However, the hazardous health effects of gaseous elemental mercury exposure on the spinal cord in volcanic areas have not been reported previously in the literature. To evaluate the presence of volcanogenic inorganic mercury in the spinal cord, a study was carried out in São Miguel island (Azores, Portugal) by comparing the spinal cord of mice exposed chronically to an active volcanic environment (Furnas village) with individuals not exposed (Rabo de Peixe village), through the autometallographic silver enhancement histochemical method. Moreover, a morphometric and quantification analysis of the axons was carried out. Results exhibited mercury deposits at the lumbar level of the spinal cord in the specimens captured at the site with volcanic activity (Furnas village). A decrease in axon calibre and axonal atrophy was also observed in these specimens. Given that these are relevant hallmarks in the neurodegenerative pathologies, our results highlight the importance of the surveillance of the health of populations chronically exposed to active volcanic environments.

Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Mercury Exposure via Indoor and Outdoor Household Dust in Three Iranian Cities

This study aims to increase our current knowledge on the concentration of particulate-bound mercury (PBM) in urban environments of three Iranian cities, where high concentrations of dust particles can act as carriers for mercury transport and deposition. A total of 172 dust samples were collected from Ahvaz, Asaluyeh, and Zabol residential houses and in outdoor air and were analyzed for total mercury content. Ahvaz is a highly industrialized city with large metallurgical plants, refineries, and major oil-related activities, which were assumed to contribute to elevated contents of PBM in this city. Very high levels of Hg contamination in Ahvaz indoor dust samples were calculated (Contamination Factor: CF > 6). Sampling sites in Asaluyeh are influenced by Hg emissions from the South Pars Gas Field. However, the results revealed a relatively lower concentration of PBM in Asaluyeh, with a low-to-moderate level of Hg contamination. This is likely ascribed to the lower content of total mercury in hydrocarbon gases than crude oil, in addition to the absence of metal smelting plants in this city compared to Ahvaz. Zabol, as a city devoid of industrial activity, presented the lowest levels of PBM concentration and contamination. Indoor dust in Ahvaz showed considerable potential to cause a non-carcinogenic health risk for children, mainly through the inhalation of PBM, while the health risk for other cities was below safe limits. The trend of health risk was found in the order of indoor > outdoor and children > adults in all studied cities.

Food Contamination: An Unexplored Possible Link between Dietary Habits and Parkinson’s Disease

Importance of a healthy lifestyle in maintaining the population’s well-being and health, especially in terms of balanced nutrition, is well known. Food choice of and dieting habits could impact disease management, which is especially true for Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, nowadays, it is not that simple to maintain a balance in nutrition, and the idea of a healthy diet tends to fade as the consequence of a western lifestyle. This should not only be dealt with in the context of food choice, but also from an environmental point of view. What we put into our bodies is strictly related to the quality of ecosystems we live in. For these reasons, attention should be directed to all the pollutants, which in many cases, we unknowingly ingest. It will be necessary to explore the interaction between food and environment, since human activity also influences the raw materials destined for consumption. This awareness can be achieved by means of an innovative scientific approach, which involves the use of new models, in order to overcome the traditional scientific investigations included in the study of Parkinson’s disease.

Application of 2,4,5-Tris(2-pyridyl)imidazole as "Turn-Off" Fluorescence Sensor for Cu (II) and Hg (II) ions and in vitro Cell Imaging

The 2,4,5-tris(2-pyridyl)imidazole (L) molecule has been evaluated as a probe for dual sensing of Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions in EtOH/HEPES buffer medium (5mM, pH=7.34, 1:1, v/v). Probe L shows a good sensitive and selective turn-off response in the presence of both Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions, which is comprehensible under long UV light. The probe can detect Cu²⁺ ion in the pH range of 3-11 and Hg²⁺ ion in 6-8. The limit of detection for Cu²⁺ (0.77 μM) is well under the allowable limit prescribed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Two metal (Cu²⁺ /Hg²⁺ ) ions are needed per L for complete fluorescence quenching. The probe shows remarkable reversibility on treatment with Na₂ EDTA, making the protocol more economical for practical purposes. Paper strip coated with the L solution of EtOH can detect the presence of Cu²⁺ and Hg²⁺ ions in the sample by visible quenching of the fluorescence intensity. DFT-TDDFT calculations support experimental observations, and d-orbitals of Cu²⁺ /Hg²⁺ provide a non-radiative decay pathway. Cell imaging study using HDF and MDA-MB-231 cells also supported the viability of L in detecting Cu²⁺ and Hg²⁺ ions in living cells.

Recent Trends and Future Perspectives of Emergent Analytical Techniques for Mercury Sensing in Aquatic Environments

Environmental emissions of mercury from industrial waste and natural sources, even in trace amounts, are toxic to organisms and ecosystems. However, industrial-scale mercury detection is limited by the high cost, low sensitivity/specificity, and poor selectivity of the available analytical tools. This review summarizes the key sensors for mercury detection in aqueous environments: colorimetric-, electrochemical-, fluorescence-, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy-based sensors reported between 2014-2021. It then compares the performances of these sensors in the determination of inorganic mercury (Hg²⁺ ) and methyl mercury (CH₃ Hg⁺ ) species in aqueous samples. Mercury sensors for aquatic applications still face serious challenges in terms of difficult deployment in remote areas and low robustness, reliability, and selectivity in harsh environments. We provide future perspectives on the selective detection of organomercury species, which are especially toxic and reactive in aquatic environments. This review is intended as a valuable resource for scientists in the field of mercury sensing.

Effect of HCl on a sorption of mercury from flue gas evolved during incineration of hospital waste using entrained flow adsorbers

Small incinerators of dangerous wastes, including those from hospitals, are a source of emissions of highly variable compositions and concentrations. Mercury is a very dangerous pollutant causing neurotoxicity in human organism. The effect of HCl concentration on adsorption of mercury on activated carbon-based sorbent was studied for the incineration of hospital waste in a 250 kg/h capacity unit. The maximum concentration of adsorbed mercury on activated carbon was determined as a function of concentration of Hg and HCl in combustion products. Based on the expected chemical reactions and the thermodynamics, the adsorption of mercury from flue gases in oxidising atmosphere has been explained. The activated carbon-based sorbent was also capable of adsorbing acid gases like HCl. The efficiency of removal of mercury from combustion products increased up to 85-87% with the concentration of HCl in flue gases. The addition of calcium hydroxide increased the amount of mercury trapped on the sorbent only by about 10%. These tests proved that an entrained flow adsorber is a suitable unit for the removal of mercury from combustion products. The consumption of activated carbon for the mercury removal was from 0.1 to 0.15 mg/Nm³ of flue gas. The advantage of an entrained flow adsorber lies in its easy continuous operation. Therefore, it is a suitable unit for small and medium size incinerators of municipal and hospital waste.

Mercury and Radiocesium Accumulation and Associations With Sublethal Endpoints in the Florida Green Watersnake (Nerodia floridana)

Mercury (Hg) and radiocesium (¹³⁷ Cs) are well-known environmental contaminants with the potential to impact the health of humans and wildlife. Snakes have several characteristics conducive to studying environmental contamination but have rarely been included in the monitoring of polluted sites. We investigated the bioaccumulation of Hg and ¹³⁷ Cs and associations with sublethal effects (standard metabolic rate [SMR] and hemoparasite infections) in Florida green watersnakes (Nerodia floridana). We captured 78 snakes from three former nuclear cooling reservoirs on the US Department of Energy's Savannah River Site in South Carolina (USA). For captured snakes, we (1) determined whole-body ¹³⁷ Cs, (2) quantified total Hg (THg) using snake tail clips, (3) conducted hemoparasite counts, and (4) measured the SMR. We used multiple regression models to determine associations among snake body size, capture location, sex, tail THg, whole-body ¹³⁷ Cs, Hepatozoon spp. prevalence and parasitemia, and SMR. Average whole-body ¹³⁷ Cs (0.23 ± 0.08 Becquerels [Bq]/g; range: 0.00-1.02 Bq/g) was correlated with snake body size and differed significantly by capture site (Pond B: 0.67 ± 0.05 Bq/g; Par Pond: 0.10 ± 0.02 Bq/g; Pond 2: 0.03 ± 0.02 Bq/g). Tail THg (0.33 ± 0.03 mg/kg dry wt; range: 0.16-2.10 mg/kg) was significantly correlated with snake body size but did not differ by capture site. We found no clear relationship between SMR and contaminant burdens. However, models indicated that the prevalence of Hepatozoon spp. in snakes was inversely related to increasing whole-body ¹³⁷ Cs burdens. Our results indicate the bioaccumulation of Hg and ¹³⁷ Cs in N. floridana and further demonstrate the utility of aquatic snakes as bioindicators. Our results also suggest a decrease in Hepatozoon spp. prevalence related to increased burdens of ¹³⁷ Cs. Although the results are intriguing, further research is needed to understand the dynamics between ¹³⁷ Cs and Hepatozoon spp. infections in semiaquatic snakes. Comprehensive Review Regarding Mercury Poisoning and Its Complex Involvement in Alzheimer's Disease

Mercury (Hg) is considered one of the most widespread toxic environmental pollutants, which seems to have multiple effects on organisms even at low concentrations. It has a critical role in many health problems with harmful consequences, with Hg primarily targeting the brain and its components, such as the central nervous system (CNS). Hg exposure was associated with numerous CNS disorders that frequently trigger Alzheimer's disease (AD). Patients with AD have higher concentrations of Hg in blood and brain tissue. This paper aims to emphasize a correlation between Hg and AD based on the known literature in the occupational field. The outcome shows that all these concerning elements could get attributed to Hg. However, recent studies did not investigate the molecular level of Hg exposure in AD. The present review highlights the interactions between Hg and AD in neuronal degenerations, apoptosis, autophagy, oxidative stress (OS), mitochondrial malfunctions, gastrointestinal (GI) microflora, infertility and altering gene expression.

Toxoplasmosis: Targeting neurotransmitter systems in psychiatric disorders

The most common form of the disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is latent toxoplasmosis due to the formation of tissue cysts in various organs, such as the brain. Latent toxoplasmosis is probably a risk factor in the development of some neuropsychiatric disorders. Behavioral changes after infection are caused by the host immune response, manipulation by the parasite, central nervous system (CNS) inflammation, as well as changes in hormonal and neuromodulator relationships. The present review focused on the exact mechanisms of T. gondii effect on the alteration of behavior and neurotransmitter levels, their catabolites and metabolites, as well as the interaction between immune responses and this parasite in the etiopathogenesis of psychiatric disorders. The dysfunction of neurotransmitters in the neural transmission is associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders. However, further intensive studies are required to determine the effect of this parasite on altering the level of neurotransmitters and the role of neurotransmitters in the etiology of host behavioral changes.

Parkinson's Disease and the Metal-Microbiome-Gut-Brain Axis: A Systems Toxicology Approach

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease, leading to motor and non-motor complications. Autonomic alterations, including gastrointestinal symptoms, precede motor defects and act as early warning signs. Chronic exposure to dietary, environmental heavy metals impacts the gastrointestinal system and host-associated microbiome, eventually affecting the central nervous system. The correlation between dysbiosis and PD suggests a functional and bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain. The bioaccumulation of metals promotes stress mechanisms by increasing reactive oxygen species, likely altering the bidirectional gut-brain link. To better understand the differing molecular mechanisms underlying PD, integrative modeling approaches are necessary to connect multifactorial perturbations in this heterogeneous disorder. By exploring the effects of gut microbiota modulation on dietary heavy metal exposure in relation to PD onset, the modification of the host-associated microbiome to mitigate neurological stress may be a future treatment option against neurodegeneration through bioremediation. The progressive movement towards a systems toxicology framework for precision medicine can uncover molecular mechanisms underlying PD onset such as metal regulation and microbial community interactions by developing predictive models to better understand PD etiology to identify options for novel treatments and beyond. Several methodologies recently addressed the complexity of this interaction from different perspectives; however, to date, a comprehensive review of these approaches is still lacking. Therefore, our main aim through this manuscript is to fill this gap in the scientific literature by reviewing recently published papers to address the surrounding questions regarding the underlying molecular mechanisms between metals, microbiota, and the gut-brain-axis, as well as the regulation of this system to prevent neurodegeneration.

A switch-on xanthene-triphenylamine based fluorescent and colorimetric sensor for the detection of ultra-trace Hg2+ in food samples and living cells

A novel colorimetric and fluorescent "switch-on" probe based on xanthene-triphenylamine was developed for detection of Hg2+, which threatens public health, food safety and the environment. The probe displayed superior colorimetric and fluorescent selectivity/sensitivity toward Hg2+ over a series of metal ions via Hg2+-triggered deprotection reaction. Hg2+ induced a ∼18-fold enhancement in emission intensity of probe TXS with yellow fluorescence (λem = 558 nm) and led to distinct color transition from light yellow to blue or yellow under daylight depending on solvent mixture. Detection parameters were optimized and examined for the influence that they exerted on the detection which involved the usage of the Box-Behnken design methodology. The sensing pathway was also examined theoretically by DFT and TD-DFT calculations. The probe was successfully utilized for the detection of Hg2+ in several food and water samples with good recoveries. Cell imaging studies demonstrated that the probe was suitable for Hg2+ detection in live cells.

Gut microbiota-mediated ferroptosis contributes to mercury exposure-induced brain injury in common carp

Mercury is a heavy metal which causes irreversible toxicity to fish and is found in aquatic environments around the world. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative mechanism of mercury exposure on brain injury in common carp. The results showed that mercury exposure could induce brain injury and memory loss in common carp. Meanwhile, mercury exposure could induce neuronal ferroptosis. The ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1 attenuated mercury-induced brain injury. However, in an vitro study, mercury did not induce ferroptosis, and ferrostatin-1 did not attenuate mercury-induced common carp brain cell death. Therefore, we speculated that mercury exposure-induced ferroptosis might occur through other pathways. Studies have shown that the gut microbiota contributes to the pathological process of heavy metal-induced injury. Therefore, we detected the effects of mercury exposure on the gut microbiota composition. The results showed that the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota were affected by mercury chloride. Surprisingly, we found that the abundance of Aeromonas, one of the most important pathogenic bacteria of fish, increased significantly. Subsequently, we isolated Aeromonas hydrophila from mercury-exposed carp and this bacteria could lead to brain injury and ferroptosis in common carp. These results suggested that mercury exposure-induced brain injury partly by increasing intestinal Aeromonas hydrophila, which led to ferroptosis in common carp.

Design of an Integrated Microfluidic Paper-Based Chip and Inspection Machine for the Detection of Mercury in Food with Silver Nanoparticles

For most of the fast screening test papers for detecting Hg2+, the obtained results are qualitative. This study developed an operation for the μPAD and combined it with the chemical colorimetric method. Silver nanoparticle (AgNP) colloids were adopted as the reactive color reagent to combine and react with the Hg standards on the paper-based chip. Then, the RGB values for the color change were used to establish the standard curve (R2 > 0.99). Subsequently, this detection system was employed for the detection tests of actual samples, and the detected RGB values of the samples were substituted back to the formula to calculate the Hg2+ contents in the food. In this study, the Hg2+ content and recovery rate in commercially available packaged water and edible salts were measured. The research results indicate that a swift, economical, and simple detection method for Hg2+ content in food has been successfully developed.

Fluorescence Based Comparative Sensing Behavior of the Nano-Composites of SiO2 and TiO2 towards Toxic Hg2+ Ions

We have synthesized sulfonamide based nano-composites of SiO2 and TiO2 for selective and sensitive determination of toxic metal ion Hg2+ in aqueous medium. Nano-composites (11) and (12) were morphologically characterized with FT-IR, solid state NMR, UV-vis, FE SEM, TEM, EDX, BET, pXRD and elemental analysis. The comparative sensing behavior, pH effect and sensor concentrations were carried out with fluorescence signaling on spectrofluorometer and nano-composites (11) and (12), both were evaluated as "turn-on" fluorescence detector for the toxic Hg2+ ions. The LODs were calculated to be 41.2 and 18.8 nM, respectively of nano-composites (11) and (12). The detection limit of TiO2 based nano-composites was found comparatively lower than the SiO2 based nano-composites.

Mercury Content in Dietary Supplements From Poland Containing Ingredients of Plant Origin: A Safety Assessment

Mercury (Hg) is a fairly common environmental pollutant. Chronic exposure to this element may cause, inter alia, kidney damage, and disturbances in the functioning of the nervous system. Literature data indicate that food, including dietary supplements (DS), may sometimes be contaminated with Hg. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess Hg content in DS containing ingredients of plant origin. The study covered 200 DS available for sale in Poland. Hg content was determined by using the AAS method with the amalgamation technique using the AMA-254 analyzer. The highest average Hg content was found in preparations used as adjuncts for lowering glucose levels (23.97 ± 38.56 μg/kg). The highest percentage of PTWI (1.143%) was found in DS aimed at improving vitality. Due to the fact that DS are commonly used, their quality should be constantly monitored.

Chronic exposure to volcanic gaseous elemental mercury: using wild Mus musculus to unveil its uptake and fate

Volcanoes are a natural source of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) (Hg⁰). Monitoring GEM releases of volcanic origin has been widely studied; however, few studies have been performed about the biomonitoring of species exposed to GEM, rendering an unknown risk to the worldwide populations living in the vicinity of an active volcano. In this pilot study, we used Mus musculus as a bioindicator species to understand to what extent lungs are the main route of mercury uptake in populations chronically exposed to active volcanic environments. Autometallographic silver protocol was used to detect mercury deposits in the histological lung slides. Abundant mercury deposits were found in the lungs of specimens captured at the site with volcanic activity (Furnas Village, S. Miguel Island-Azores). The presence of mercury in the lungs could represent not only hazardous effects to the lung itself but also to other tissues and organs, such as brain and kidneys. This study confirms that the main uptake route for GEM is the lungs and that, even at very low concentrations in the environment, a chronic exposure to Hg⁰ results in its bioaccumulation in the lung tissue. These results reinforce that biomonitoring studies should be combined with monitoring classical approaches in order to better characterize the risks of exposure to Hg⁰ in volcanic environments.

Gaseous mercury re-emission from wet flue gas desulfurization wastewater aeration basins: A review

Wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) simultaneously removes Hg and SO₂ from coal-fired power plant flue gas streams. Hg⁰ re-emission occurs when the dissolved Hg(II) is converted to a volatile form (i.e., Hg⁰) that can be subsequently emitted into the ambient air from WFGD wastewater aeration basins. Others have shown that Hg⁰ re-emission depends on pH, temperature, ligands (Cl, Br, I, F, SO₃^2-, SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, SCN^-, and ClO^-), O₂, minerals (Se and As), and metals (Fe and Cu) in WFGD wastewater. Still others have shown Hg⁰ re-emission restriction via inhibitor addition (adsorbents and precipitators). This is the first review that summarizes the complex and inconsistently reported Hg⁰ re-emission mechanisms, updates misconceptions related to Hg(II) complexation and reduction, and reviews applications of inhibitors that convert aqueous Hg(II) into stable solid forms to prevent gaseous Hg⁰ formation and release.

The silver linings of mercury: Reconsideration of its impacts on living organisms from a multi-timescale perspective

Research on mercury (Hg), a naturally occurring element in Earth's lithosphere, has been extremely hot in the past few decades due to the outbreak of a series of disastrous poisoning incidents. However, such studies might provide us a biased view towards Hg if no thorough review about its long-term effects on living organisms from a multi-timescale perspective was performed. Hg might have played a mysterious role in critical intervals (e.g., mass extinction and oceanic anoxia events) in several geologic periods due to the elevated Hg levels induced by volcanism whereas it has long been used for various purposes in human history. Therefore, it is necessary to go through previous studies and historical records of different timescales (10⁰ to 10⁶ yr). In this work, we conducted a thorough review of Hg knowledge at three different timescales, i.e., geologic periods (10⁶ yr), human history (10³ yr), and contemporary history (10⁰ yr), summarizing recent advances and indicated potential research gaps. By doing so, we demonstrated that it is possible to achieve safe and sustainable Hg applications despite the current Hg crisis. However, such silver linings depend on a better understanding of ecosystem dynamics. Besides, considering the possible dire consequences of erupted Hg levels as suggested in geological periods, swift actions to mitigate the impacts of anthropogenic activities on the Hg cycle will be another key point. Overall, this review presented a unique perspective of Hg combining different timescales, shedding light on the importance of a better understanding of the global ecosystem as a whole and maintaining the sustainability of planet Earth in the future.

Imaging Microstructural Damage and Alveolar Bone Loss in Rats Systemically Exposed to Methylmercury: First Experimental Evidence

The alveolar bone is an important mineralized structure of the periodontal support apparatus, and information about the methylmercury (MeHg) effects on the structural integrity is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether systemic, chronic, and low-dose exposure to MeHg can change the alveolar bone microstructure of rats. Adult Wistar rats (n = 30) were exposed to 0.04 mg/kg/day of MeHg or vehicle through intragastric gavage. The animals were euthanized after 60 days, and blood samples were collected for trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), glutathione (GSH), lipid peroxidation (LPO), and comet assays. The mandible of each animal was collected and separated into hemimandibles that were used to determine the total Hg level in the bone and to analyze microstructural damage and alveolar bone loss in terms of trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), bone volume fraction (BV/TV), and exposed root area of the second molars. MeHg exposure triggered oxidative stress in blood represented by lower levels of GSH and TEAC and the increase in LPO and DNA damage of the blood cells. High total Hg levels were found in the alveolar bone, and the microstructural analyses showed a reduction in Tb.N, Tb.Th, and BV/TV, which resulted in an increase in the exposed root area and a decrease in bone height. Long-term MeHg exposure promotes a systemic redox imbalance associated with microstructural changes and alveolar bone loss and may indicate a potential risk indicator for periodontal diseases.

Association between Blood Mercury Concentration and Prevalence of Borderline Hypercholesterolemia among Adolescents: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010-2013 and 2016

There is limited evidence on the association between blood mercury (Hg) concentration and the risk of borderline dyslipidemia in adolescents. Here, we investigated the association between blood Hg concentration and the prevalence of borderline dyslipidemia among Korean adolescents. A total of 1559 participants (806 boys and 753 girls) aged 10–18 years who cross-sectionally enrolled in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010–2013 and 2016 were included in this study. Hg concentrations (µg/L) in whole blood samples were measured. The geometric mean (GM) of the blood Hg concentration was 1.88 µg/L. It showed a 63% higher prevalence of borderline hypercholesterolemia (total cholesterol (TC) 170–199 mg/dL) per unit of natural log-transformed blood Hg concentration in boys (95% CI = 1.10–2.41), but not in girls. When a categorical model was applied, the positive association with the prevalence of borderline hypercholesterolemia was also persistant in boys (OR (95% CI) for 2nd and 3rd tertiles (Hg concentration 1.532–11.761 µg/L) vs. 1st tertile (Hg concentration 0.192–1.531 µg/L): 1.92 (1.19–3.10)), but not in girls. This finding suggests that blood Hg concentration might result in a higher prevalence of borderline hypercholesterolemia among adolescents and more stringent public health actions should be taken for the reduction of Hg exposure to prevent dyslipidemia from early-childhood, despite the need of further study to evaluate a causal relationship between blood Hg concentration and the risk of dyslipidemia.

Effects of Elemental Mercury Vapor Inhalation on Arterial Blood Gases, Lung Histology, and Interleukin-1 Expression in Pulmonary Tissues of Rats

We investigated the effects of elemental mercury vapor inhalation on arterial blood gases (ABGs), lung histology, and interleukin-1 (IL-1) expression in pulmonary tissues in rats. A total of 42 Sprague Dawley rats were divided randomly into three groups. Rats in the first group were used as the control (CG). A short-term group (STG) and a long-term group (LTG) were exposed to 500 μg/m3 of mercury vapor 2 hrs/day for 21 days and 65 days, respectively. After exposure periods were completed, arterial blood samples were obtained, and ABGs were measured. Lung tissue sections were prepared for histology evaluation and immune-stained to detect IL-1 expression. There was a significant decrease in body weight in both STG (15%) and LTG (22%) compared with the CG. In the LTG, six out of 14 (43%) rats died, including two males and four females, while none of the rats in the STG died during the experiment. In both STG and LTG, a significant acid-base imbalance was characterized by a significant decrease in blood pH values and a significant increase in PCO2 values. Both PO2 and SpO2 blood values were significantly decreased in the STG and LTG, while no changes were observed in HCO3 values in all groups. Histological evaluation of lung tissues revealed severe lesions characterized by pulmonary emphysema and inflammatory cellular infiltrate. IL-1 expression in lung tissues was not significantly different between exposed rats and control subjects. These results indicate significant alterations in blood acid-base status characterized by severe respiratory acidosis with hypoxemia and no evidence of compensatory alkalosis in rats after exposure to short- and long-term elementary mercury vapor.

Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, and mercury in relation to sleep duration and sleep quality: findings from the CARDIA study

PURPOSE

To examine the associations of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCω3PUFA) intake with sleep quality and duration in a cohort of American young adults, and to explore whether the associations of interest are modified by selenium (Se) and/or mercury (Hg) status.

METHODS

The study sample consisted of 3964 men and women from the longitudinal Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, aged 25.0 ± 3.6 at baseline. Intake of LCω3PUFA was assessed using an interviewer-administered dietary history questionnaire at baseline (1985-1986), Y7 (1992-1993), and Y20 (2005-2006). Toenail Se and Hg concentrations were quantified at Y2 (1987-1988). The outcomes were self-reported sleep quality and sleep duration measured by one question for each at Y15 (2000-2001) and Y20. Generalized estimating equation was used to examine the association between cumulative average intake of LCω3PUFA and sleep measures. Restricted cubic spline was performed to explore the potential non-linear associations of interest. Se and Hg were dichotomized by their median values to examine the potential effect modification of Se and/or Hg.

RESULTS

We did not observe any significant associations (linear or non-linear) of LCω3PUFA intake with either sleep quality or duration. Also, no significant association was observed in any subgroup classified by toenail Se and/or Hg concentrations. Similarly, sensitivity analysis indicated that the null associations between LCω3PUFA intake and sleep quality or duration persisted across subgroups classified by race, gender, obesity, or having small children.

CONCLUSION

Findings from this longitudinal analysis did not support the hypothesis that LCω3PUFA intake is associated with sleep quality or sleep duration.

Process Optimization of Silver Nanoparticle Synthesis and Its Application in Mercury Detection

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have stable reactivity and excellent optical absorption properties. They can be applied in various industries, such as environmental protection, biochemical engineering, and analyte monitoring. However, synthesizing AgNPs and determining their appropriate dosage as a coloring substance are difficult tasks. In this study, to optimize the process of AgNP synthesis and obtain a simple detection method for trace mercury in the environment, we evaluate several factors-including the reagent addition sequence, reaction temperature, reaction time, the pH of the solution, and reagent concentration-considering the color intensity and purity of AgNPs as the reaction optimization criteria. The optimal process for AgNP synthesis is as follows: Mix 10 mM of silver nitrate with trisodium citrate in a hot water bath for 10 min; then, add 10 mM of sodium borohydride to produce the AgNPs and keep stirring for 2 h; finally, adjust the pH to 12 to obtain the most stable products. For AgNP-based mercury detection, the calibration curve of mercury over the concentration range of 0.1-2 ppb exhibits good linearity (R2 > 0.99). This study provides a stable and excellent AgNP synthesis technique that can improve various applications involving AgNP-mediated reactions and has the potential to be developed as an alternative to using expensive detection equipment and to be applied for the detection of mercury in food.

Highly Sensitive Colorimetric Naked-Eye Detection of HgII Using a Sacrificial Metal-Organic Framework

This study has developed a specific, easy, and novel approach to designing a sacrificial metal-organic framework (MOF) that can detect and measure the amount of Hg²⁺ in aqueous and nonaqueous solutions using the naked eye. The functionalized [Zn(oba)(RL3)_0.5]_n·1.5DMF (TMU-59) provides the ability of simple visual assessment or colorimetric readout without sophisticated analytical equipment. Because of the special interaction with Hg²⁺, degradation of the structure of this unique MOF causes the solution to change color from colorless to a pink that is easily recognizable to the naked eye. The presence of a methyl group plays a major role in naked-eye detection by a qualitative sensor. Furthermore, this qualitative sensor data for the production of a simple, instant, and portable red, green, and blue (RGB)-based quantitative sensor were used to determine the concentration of Hg²⁺ in different specimens. As a turn-off fluorescence sensor, this unique structure is also capable of detecting Hg²⁺ at very low concentrations (the limit of detection is 0.16 ppb). To the best of our knowledge, TMU-59 is the first MOF-based naked-eye sensor that can successfully and specifically display the presence of Hg²⁺ through a major color change.

A novel synthesis of sulfurized magnetic biochar for aqueous Hg(II) capture as a potential method for environmental remediation in water

Due to public health threats resulting from mercury (Hg) and its distribution in the food chain, global restrictions have been placed on Hg use and emissions. Biochar is a porous, carbonaceous adsorbent typically derived from waste biomass or organic matter, making it an eco-friendly material for aqueous mercury (Hg(II)) control. Functionalization of biochar can improve performance in pollution control applications. In this work, carbonization, magnetization, and sulfurization of biochar were combined into a single heating step to prepare sulfurized magnetic biochar (SMBC) for Hg(II) removal from water. Results indicate that SMBC prepared at 600 °C adsorbed 8.93 mg/g Hg(II), more than materials prepared at 400, 500, 700, 800, and 900 °C. Additionally, Hg(II) adsorption onto SMBC was 53.0% and 11.5% greater than onto magnetic biochar (MBC) and biochar (BC), respectively. Hg(II) adsorption is shown to be favorable in acidic conditions (pH 3.5-5), thermodynamically spontaneous, and endothermic. Adsorption results fit the pseudo-second-order (R² = 0.990 and the sum of squared error (SSE) = 5.382) and external mass transfer (R² = 0.971 and SSE = 9.422) models. The partitioning coefficients were 4.964 mg/g/μM in freshwater, 0.176 mg/g/μM in estuary water, and 0.275 mg/g/μM in seawater, highlighting the importance of salinity in environmental remediation applications. In summary, SMBC can be readily prepared with minimal processing steps. The product is a robust adsorbent for Hg(II), and it can potentially be applied to remediate contaminated water/sediment/soil in the future.

Heavy Metals Presence in the Soil and Their Content in Selected Varieties of Chili Peppers in Slovakia

Capsicum chili peppers are popular vegetables in Slovakia. They provide a supply of health-promoting substances, but contaminated vegetables can pose a serious health risk to the people who consume them. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the content of heavy metals (Mn, Zn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb and Hg) in the soil as well as in selected varieties of the genus Capsicum grown in southern Slovakia. The results were compared with the limit values given by the Law no. 220/2004 (valid in the SR) as well as threshold values proposed by the European Commission (EC) (2006). The gained result showed that the total content of Cd (1.64 mg/kg) as well as the available mobile forms of Cd (0.12 mg/kg) and Pb (0.26 mg/kg) was exceeded on the soil on which Capsicum cultivars were grown. The limit values of other monitored heavy metals (Mn, Zn, Cr, Cu, Ni, and Hg) were not exceeded. The studied species of the genus Capsicum did not accumulate monitored heavy metals. It can be stated that consumption of chili peppers does not pose any risk for human health.

Speciation and bioavailability of mercury in sediments from Mokolo River, Limpopo Province, South Africa

The presence of coal-based power plants and coal mine in the Waterberg area subjects the Mokolo River to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as mercury (Hg). Mercury is an extremely toxic element. Thus, monitoring and chemical speciation of Hg in water bodies; particularly in sediments is a vital tool for assessing water quality. The objective of this study was to investigate the levels of Hg(II) and methyl Hg (MeHg(I)) in sediment samples collected from Mokolo River in different seasons, as well as examining factors such as pH, temperature and organic matter content, which could affect Hg methylation rates. An ultrasonic based method was used for the extraction of Hg species in sediments. This was followed by the chromatographic separation and detection of Hg(II) and MeHg(I) by the on-line coupling of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A solution containing HCl and 2-mercaptoethanol was employed for the extraction of Hg species in sediments. Separation of the two species of Hg was achieved using isocratic elution mode with a mobile phase containing L-cysteine, 2-mercaptoethanol, ammonium acetate and methanol. The accuracy of the method was checked and yielded a percentage recovery of 86%. The Hg(II) concentrations ranged from 38.4 to 89.05 ng g^-1 and 34.8 to 57.3 ng g^-1 in low and high flow seasons, respectively. The concentrations of MeHg(I) ranged from 0.702 to 4.5 ng g^-1 and 0.5 to 2.5 ng g^-1 in the low and high flow seasons, respectively. Factors such as pH and temperature were found to influence the methylation rates, however correlation couldn't be established to organic matter content due to similar amount of organic matter in all the samples.

Health risk assessment of exposure to toxic elements resulting from consumption of dried wild-grown mushrooms available for sale

Mushrooms exhibit a high ability to accumulate potentially toxic elements. The legal regulations in force in the European Union countries do not define the maximum content of elements in dried wild-grown mushrooms. This study presents the content of mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) determined in dried wild-grown mushrooms (Boletus edulis and Xerocomus badius) available for sale. Moreover, the health risk associated with their consumption is assessed. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (Cd, Pb, As) and atomic absorption spectrometry (Hg) were used. The mean Hg, Cd, Pb and As concentration in Boletus edulis was 3.039±1.092, 1.983±1.145, 1.156±1.049 and 0.897±0.469 mg/kg and in Xerocomus badius 0.102±0.020, 1.154±0.596, 0.928±1.810 and 0.278±0.108 mg/kg, respectively. The maximum value of the hazard index (HI) showed that the consumption of a standard portion of dried Boletus edulis may have negative consequences for health and corresponded to 76.2%, 34.1%, 33% and 4.3% of the maximum daily doses of Hg, Cd, Pb and As, respectively. The results indicate that the content of toxic elements in dried wild-grown mushrooms should be monitored. The issue constitutes a legal niche where unfavourable EU regulations may pose a threat to food safety and consumer health.

Direct Mercury Detection in Landfill Leachate Using a Novel AuNP-Biopolymer Carbon Screen-Printed Electrode Sensor

A novel Au nanoparticle (AuNP)-biopolymer coated carbon screen-printed electrode (SPE) sensor was developed through the co-electrodeposition of Au and chitosan for mercury (Hg) ion detection. This new sensor showed successful Hg2+ detection in landfill leachate using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) with an optimized condition: a deposition potential of -0.6 V, deposition time of 200 s, amplitude of 25 mV, frequency of 60 Hz, and square wave step voltage of 4 mV. A noticeable peak was observed at +0.58 V associated with the stripping current of the Hg ion. The sensor exhibited a good sensitivity of ~0.09 μA/μg (~0.02 μA/nM) and a linear response over the concentration range of 10 to 100 ppb (50-500 nM). The limit of detection (LOD) was 1.69 ppb, which is significantly lower than the safety limit defined by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The sensor had an excellent selective response to Hg2+ in landfill leachate against other interfering cations (e.g., Zn2+, Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+). Fifteen successive measurements with a stable peak current and a lower relative standard deviation (RSD = 5.1%) were recorded continuously using the AuNP-biopolymer-coated carbon SPE sensor, which showed excellent stability, sensitivity and reproducibility and consistent performance in detecting the Hg2+ ion. It also exhibited a good reliability and performance in measuring heavy metals in landfill leachate.

Prenatal Exposure to Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Subsequent Brain Structure Changes Revealed by Voxel-Based Morphometry and Generalized Q-Sampling MRI

Previous studies have indicated that prenatal exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can cause adverse neuropsychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. This study aimed to determine the association between the concentrations of prenatal EDCs and brain structure changes in teenagers by using MRI. We recruited 49 mother–child pairs during the third trimester of pregnancy, and collected and examined the concentration of EDCs—including phthalate esters, perfluorochemicals (PFCs), and heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury)—in maternal urine and/or serum. MRI voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and generalized q-sampling imaging (GQI) mapping—including generalized fractional anisotropy (GFA), normalized quantitative anisotropy (NQA), and the isotropic value of the orientation distribution function (ISO)—were obtained in teenagers 13–16 years of age in order to find the association between maternal EDC concentrations and possible brain structure alterations in the teenagers’ brains. We found that there are several specific vulnerable brain areas/structures associated with prenatal exposure to EDCs, including decreased focal brain volume, primarily in the frontal lobe; high frontoparietal lobe, temporooccipital lobe and cerebellum; and white matter structural alterations, which showed a negative association with GFA/NQA and a positive association with ISO, primarily in the corpus callosum, external and internal capsules, corona radiata, superior fronto-occipital fasciculus, and superior longitudinal fasciculus. Prenatal exposure to EDCs may be associated with specific brain structure alterations in teenagers.

High affinity of 3D spongin scaffold towards Hg(II) in real waters

This study focuses on the ability of commercial natural bath sponges, which are made from the skeletons of marine sponges, to sorb Hg from natural waters. The main component of these bath sponges is spongin, which is a protein-based material, closely related to collagen, offering a plenitude of reactive sites from the great variety of amino acids in the protein chains, where the Hg ions can sorb. For a dose of 40 mg L^-1 and initial concentration of 50 μg L^-1 of Hg(II), marine spongin (MS) removed ~90% of Hg from 3 water matrixes (ultrapure, bottled, and seawater), corresponding to a residual concentration of ~5 μg L^-1, which tends to the recommend value for drinking water of 1 μg L^-1. This value was maintained even by increasing the MS dosage, suggesting the existence of a gradient concentration threshold below which the Hg sorption mechanism halts. Kinetic modelling showed that the Pseudo Second-Order equation was the best fit for all the water matrixes, which indicates that the sorption mechanism relies most probably on chemical interactions between the functional groups of spongin and the Hg ions. This material can also be regenerated in HNO₃ and reused for Hg sorption, with marginal losses in efficiency, at least for 3 consecutive cycles.

"Metal elements and pesticides as risk factors for Parkinson's disease - A review"

Essential metals including iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) with known physiological functions in human body play an important role in cell homeostasis. Excessive exposure to these essential as well as non-essential metals including mercury (Hg) and Aluminum (Al) may contribute to pathological conditions, including PD. Each metal could be toxic through specific pathways. Epidemiological evidences from occupational and ecological studies besides various in vivo and in vitro studies have revealed the possible pathogenic role and neurotoxicity of different metals. Pesticides are substances that aim to mitigate the harm done by pests to plants and crops, and are extensively used to boost agricultural production. This review provides an outline of our current knowledge on the possible association between metals and PD. We have discussed the potential association between these two, furthermore the chemical properties, biological and toxicological aspects as well as possible mechanisms of Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Al, Ca, Pb, Hg and Zn in PD pathogenesis. In addition, we review recent evidence on deregulated microRNAs upon pesticide exposure and possible role of deregulated miRNA and pesticides to PD pathogenesis.

The Function of the Metals in Regulating Epigenetics During Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's means Parkinson's disease, a chronic degenerative disease of central nervous system. The main area which is affected by this disease is motor system. Since it firstly founded by James Parkinson in his 1817 publication, nowadays, people still have lots of questions about this disease. This review mainly summarizes the epigenetics of Parkinson's. DNA methylation is one of the epigenetic mechanisms of Parkinson's. During the development of disease, global hypomethylation, and hypermethylation happen in different areas of patients. Another epigenetic mechanism is histone modification. People believe that some metals can induce Parkinson's disease by modulating epigenetic mechanisms. This review summarizes the relationships between different metals and Parkinson's disease. However, the specific roles of most metals in epigenetics are still unknown, which need further research.

Association between Dyslipidemia and Mercury Exposure in Adults

Background-Dyslipidemia is one of the prominent risk factors for cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death worldwide. Dyslipidemia has various causes, including metabolic capacity, genetic problems, physical inactivity, and dietary habits. This study aimed to determine the association between dyslipidemia and exposure to heavy metals in adults. Methods-Using data from the seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2016-2017), 5345 participants aged ≥20 years who were tested for heavy metal levels were analyzed in this study. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to assess the factors affecting the prevalence of dyslipidemia. Results-The risks of dyslipidemia among all and male participants with mercury (Hg) levels of ≥2.75 μg/L (corresponding to the Korean average level) were 1.273 and 1.699 times higher than in those with levels of <2.75 μg/L, respectively. The factors that significantly affected the dyslipidemia risk were age, household income, body mass index, and subjective health status in both males and females. Conclusions-In adult males, exposure to Hg at higher-than-average levels was positively associated with dyslipidemia. These results provide a basis for targeted prevention strategies for dyslipidemia using lifestyle guidelines for reducing Hg exposure and healthy behavioral interventions.

Simultaneous aqueous Hg(II) adsorption and gaseous Hg0 re-emission inhibition from SFGD wastewater by using Cu and S co-impregnated activated carbon

Seawater flue gas desulfurization (SFGD) has shown great effectiveness in the controlling of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) emission and the removing of mercury (Hg) from flue gases of coal-fired power plants. Some problems pertaining to SFGD for Hg control, however, remain to be solved: (1) environmental impact from the discharge of Hg-containing seawater to the ocean, and (2) re-emission of gaseous Hg from the aeration tank to the atmosphere. This study synthesizes the copper/sulfur co-impregnated activated carbon (Cu-S-AC) to simultaneously capture aqueous Hg(II) and inhibit gaseous Hg⁰ re-emission from actual SFGD wastewater. Cu-S-AC exhibited greater Hg(II) adsorption than both raw activated carbon (AC) and sulfur-impregnated activated carbon (S-AC) at an initial Hg(II) concentration of higher than 8000 ng/L. The Hg(II) adsorption of Cu-S-AC was slightly greater at pH 7 and 8 than that under acidic conditions. The Hg(II) adsorption was well-fitted with both linear and Freundlich isotherms. The results of thermodynamic analyses veiled the endothermic and spontaneous adsorption of Hg(II) on Cu-S-AC. In addition, the pseudo-second-order equation provided the best correlation coefficient for the Hg(II) adsorption on Cu-S-AC. Notably, the increases of pH and temperature increased the Hg⁰ re-emission. Nevertheless, Cu-S-AC addition significantly inhibited the Hg⁰ re-emission (92%) from SFGD wastewater.

Status and environmental management of soil mercury pollution in China: A review

The harm from mercury pollution to human health and the environment has long been known. In recent years, the combination of industrial activities and long-term atmospheric transport has resulted in a sustained increase in mercury concentrations in soils. However, soil remediation and mercury-contaminated soil management in China are still in its infancy, and there is ample space for the development of related research. We systematically reviewed several pertinent topics and found that soil mercury pollution around mines and industrial soil in China is the most serious. The highest mercury content is found in the soil around the Tongren mercury mine in Guizhou Province and the thermometer factories. The average content of soil mercury is similar to that of atmospheric mercury emission in China. Mercury content in soil gradually decreases from the southeast to the northwest. In order to repair the mercury-contaminated soil, solidification and stabilization technology have been developed in China and applied in the engineering of restoration. In the future, we will study more effective stabilizer materials and select plants highly rich in mercury, to develop low-cost and high-repair-rate remediation technology. China has also developed a series of policies, regulations, and regulatory documents to manage mercury pollution, such as the Agricultural Land Standard and the Construction Land Standard. Compared with other countries, the screening values for soil mercury in China are relatively low. China has also established control standards for methylmercury in soils of residential and industrial land. In addition, China has issued emission standards and control notices related to the mercury industry. However, there are still shortcomings in soil remediation technology and environmental management systems for mercury pollution in China. In the future, China will formulate standards according to local conditions and improve the responsibility mechanism, financial mechanism, and level of public participation.

Reduction of the acidity and peroxide numbers of tengkawang butter (Shorea stenoptera) using thermal and acid activated bentonites

Tengkawang fat (Shorea stenoptera), from an indigenous plant of the Kalimantan forest, has excellent potential as an alternative source of vegetable fat because it has a high level of fatty acids composition. Activated natural bentonite can be used as a bleaching agent to improve the quality of tengkawang fat. This research aims to reduce the acidity, peroxide number values and identify the physicochemical properties (fatty acid composition, nutrients, and thermal) of tengkawang butter. Initially, tengkawang samples from Nanga Yen and Sintang were pre-treated using the degumming process with 1% phosphoric acid and the neutralization process with a 1 M NaOH 10% w/w solution. The results show that the acidity (mg NaOH/g) of the tengkawang fat samples was reduced from 11.00 to 3.36 when using bentonite activated at 200 °C. The bentonite activated with 0.5 M HCl reduced the acidity to 3.61. The peroxide number (meq O2/kg) of the tengkawang fat samples was reduced from 9.45 to 4.84 and 3.47 by bleaching with thermal-activated and acid-activated bentonites, respectively. Peroxide value correlates with β-carotene content. The smaller of the β-carotene content, the smaller the peroxide value. The acidity, peroxide number, and iodine number values from tengkawang fat after treatment adhere to the SNI 2903: 2016 standard. The main content of fatty acids in tengkawang fat is palmitic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid. These results show that both products are suitable for the food industry in terms of the acid and peroxide numbers. The application of this research results will assist local people in increasing the economic value of the product from tengkawang plant, which is an indigenous plant from Kalimantan.

The Relationship between Cytokine Profile and Hypertension among the Mercury-Exposed Residents of Temirtau Region in Central Kazakhstan

Background:

Mercury is a common environmental contaminant and it is also harmful to human health. Among reported toxicities, its harmful effect on hypertension is poorly documented. In Kazakhstan, Temirtau city has been reported to have a high level of mercury contamination from an acetaldehyde production factory. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between serum profile of cytokines and the development of hypertension among the exposed citizens.

Methods:

We selected 81 individuals for study, out of them, 41 exposed ones suffered hypertension and 40 – unexposed healthy controls in villages Chkalovo, Samarkand, Gagarinskoye, Tegiszhol, Rostovka in 2016. Mercury content in urine was studied by inversion voltammetry. Cytokine levels of IL-2, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α were determined by ELISA.

Results:

Mercury-exposed citizens, especially those with hypertension, had significantly higher concentrations of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-2, IL-6 and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 as compared to the unexposed population. The dependence of the mercury level in urine on IL-2 content was also detected. Therefore, chronic low doses of exposure to mercury were associated with an increase in serum levels of immune markers and with the increased risk of hypertension.

Conclusion:

The presence of mercury in the body probably affected the expression of interleukin-2, one of the main cytokines that coordinate immune response.
