High secondary aerosol contribution to particulate pollution during haze events in China

Dominant physical and chemical processes impacting nitrate in Shandong of the North China Plain during winter haze events

Nitrate has been a dominant component of PM2.5 since the stringent emission control measures implemented in China in 2013. Clarifying key physical and chemical processes influencing nitrate concentrations is crucial for eradicating heavy air pollution in China. In this study, we explored dominant processes impacting nitrate concentrations in Shandong of the North China Plain during three haze events from 9 to 25 December 2021, named cases P1 (94.46 (30.85) μg m-3 for PM2.5 (nitrate)), P2 (148.95 (50.12) μg m-3) and P3 (88.03 (29.21) μg m-3), by using the Weather Research and Forecasting/Chemistry model with an integrated process rate analysis scheme and updated heterogeneous hydrolysis of dinitrogen pentoxide on the wet aerosol surface (HET-N2O5) and additional nitrous acid (HONO) sources (AS-HONO). The results showed that nitrate increases in the three cases were attributed to aerosol chemistry, whereas nitrate decreases were due mainly to the vertical mixing process in cases P1 and P2 and to the advection process in case P3. HET-N2O5 (the reaction of OH + NO2) contributed 45 % (51 %) of the HNO3 production rate during the study period. AS-HONO produced a nitrate enhancement of 24 % in case P1, 12 % in case P2 and 19 % in case P3, and a HNO3 production rate enhancement of 0.79- 0.97 (0.18- 0.60) μg m-3 h-1 through the reaction of OH + NO2 (HET-N2O5) in the three cases. This study implies that using suitable parameterization schemes for heterogeneous reactions on aerosol and ground surfaces and nitrate photolysis is vital in simulations of HONO and nitrate, and the MOSAIC module for aerosol water simulations needs to be improved.

Synthesis and Characterization of Organic Peroxides from Monoterpene-Derived Criegee Intermediates in Secondary Organic Aerosol

Ozonolysis of alkenes is known to produce reactive intermediates─stabilized Criegee intermediates (SCIs), and their subsequent bimolecular reactions with various carboxylic acids can form α-acyloxyalkyl hydroperoxides (AAHPs), which is considered a major class of organic peroxides in secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Despite their atmospheric and health importance, the molecular-level identification of organic peroxides in atmospheric aerosols is highly challenging, preventing further assessment of their environmental fate. Here, we synthesize 20 atmospherically relevant AAHPs through liquid-phase ozonolysis, in which two types of monoterpene-derived SCIs from either α-pinene or 3-carene are scavenged by 10 different carboxylic acids to form AAHPs with diverse structures. These AAHPs are identified individually by liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry. AAHPs were previously thought to decompose quickly in an aqueous environment such as cloud droplets, but we demonstrate here that AAHPs hydrolysis rates are highly compound-dependent with rate constants differing by 2 orders of magnitude. In contrast, the aqueous-phase formation rate constants between SCI and various carboxylic acids vary only within a factor of 2-3. Finally, we identified two of the 20 synthesized AAHPs in α-pinene SOA and two in 3-carene SOA, contributing ∼0.3% to the total SOA mass. Our results improve the current molecular-level understanding of organic peroxides and are useful for a more accurate assessment of their environmental fate and health impact.

Bioaerosols in the atmosphere: A comprehensive review on detection methods, concentration and influencing factors

In the past few decades, especially since the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the effects of atmospheric bioaerosols on human health, the environment, and climate have received great attention. To evaluate the impacts of bioaerosols quantitatively, it is crucial to determine the types of bioaerosols in the atmosphere and their spatial-temporal distribution. We provide a concise summary of the online and offline observation strategies employed by the global research community to sample and analyze atmospheric bioaerosols. In addition, the quantitative distribution of bioaerosols is described by considering the atmospheric bioaerosols concentrations at various time scales (daily and seasonal changes, for example), under various weather, and different underlying surfaces. Finally, a comprehensive summary of the reasons for the spatiotemporal distribution of bioaerosols is discussed, including differences in emission sources, the impact process of meteorological factors and environmental factors. This review of information on the latest research progress contributes to the emergence of further observation strategies that determine the quantitative dynamics of public health and ecological effects of bioaerosols.

Multiphase interactions between sulfur dioxide and secondary organic aerosol from the photooxidation of toluene: Reactivity and sulfate formation

There is growing evidence that the interactions between sulfur dioxide (SO2) and organic peroxides (POs) in aerosol and clouds play an important role in atmospheric sulfate formation and aerosol aging, yet the reactivity of POs arising from anthropogenic precursors toward SO2 remains unknown. In this study, we investigate the multiphase reactions of SO2 with secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formed from the photooxidation of toluene, a major type of anthropogenic SOA in the atmosphere. The reactive uptake coefficient of SO2 on toluene SOA was determined to be on the order of 10-4, depending strikingly on aerosol water content. POs contribute significantly to the multiphase reactivity of toluene SOA, but they can only explain a portion of the measured SO2 uptake, suggesting the presence of other reactive species in SOA that also contribute to the particle reactivity toward SO2. The second-order reaction rate constant (kII) between S(IV) and toluene-derived POs was estimated to be in the range of the kII values previously reported for commercially available POs (e.g., 2-butanone peroxide and 2-tert-butyl hydroperoxide) and the smallest (C1-C2) and biogenic POs. In addition, unlike commercial POs that can efficiently convert S(IV) into both inorganic sulfate and organosulfates, toluene-derived POs appear to mainly oxidize S(IV) to inorganic sulfate. Our study reveals the multiphase reactivity of typical anthropogenic SOA and POs toward SO2 and will help to develop a better understanding of the formation and evolution of atmospheric secondary aerosol.

Comprehensive characterization of speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gas-phase and particle-phase intermediate- and semi-volatile volatility organic compounds (I/S-VOCs) from Chinese diesel trucks

We established the comprehensive emission profiles of organic compounds for typical Chinese diesel trucks. The profiles cover the entire volatility range, including speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), intermediate-volatility organic compounds (IVOCs), and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). The VOCs and I/SVOCs were analyzed by one-dimensional gas chromatography quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC qMS) and two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-ToF-MS) separately. The impacts of starting mode and aftertreatment technology on the VOC, gaseous and particulate I/SVOC emissions, and the gas-particle partitioning were investigated. The emission factor (EF) of gas phase I/SVOCs was approximately 10 times higher than that of particle phase I/SVOCs and the chemical compositions and volatility distributions varied greatly. VOC, IVOC, and SVOC emissions significantly decreased when vehicles were equipped with advanced aftertreatment technologies. Diesel particulate filters (DPF) can remove >71 % VOC, 74 % gaseous, and 88 % particulate I/SVOCs, many of which are significant secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors. The chemical compositions and volatility distributions of the gaseous I/SVOCs and unburned diesel fuel were similar, revealing that diesel fuel is the main origin of the gaseous I/SVOCs. The I/SVOC emission profiles covering the whole volatility range, i.e., log10C* = -3 to 10 (C*: effective saturation concentration, μg m-3) were established.

A comprehensive exploration of characteristics and source attribution of carbonaceous aerosols in PM2.5 in an East China megacity

A total of 84 PM2.5 (fine particulate matter) aerosol samples were collected between October 2020 and August 2021 within an urban site in Hangzhou, an East China megacity. Chemical species, such as organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), as well as char, soot, and n-alkanes, were analyzed to determine their pollution characteristics and source contributions. The mean yearly concentrations of OC, EC, char, soot, and total n-alkanes (∑n-alkane) were 8.76 ± 3.61 μg/m3, 1.44 ± 0.76 μg/m3, 1.21 ± 0.69 μg/m3, 0.3 ± 0.1 μg/m3, and 24.2 ± 10.6 ng/m3. The OC, EC, and ∑n-alkanes were found in the highest levels during winter and lowest during summer. There were strong correlations between OC and EC in both winter and spring, suggesting similar potential sources for these carbonaceous components in both seasons. There were poor correlations among the target pollutants due to summertime secondary organic carbon formation. Potential source contribution functions analysis showed that local pollution levels in winter and autumn were likely influenced by long-range transportation from the Plain of North China. Source index and positive matrix factorization models provided insights into the complex sources of n-alkanes in Hangzhou. Their major contributors were identified as terrestrial plant releases (32.7%), traffic emissions (28.8%), coal combustion (27.3%), and microbial activity (11.2%). Thus, controlling vehicular emissions and coal burning could be key measures to alleviate n-alkane concentrations in the atmosphere of Hangzhou, as well as other Chinese urban centers.

Multiscale computational simulation of pollutant behavior at water interfaces

The investigation of pollutant behavior at water interfaces is critical to understand pollution in aquatic systems. Computational methods allow us to overcome the limitations of experimental analysis, delivering valuable insights into the chemical mechanisms and structural characteristics of pollutant behavior at interfaces across a range of scales, from microscopic to mesoscopic. Quantum mechanics, all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, and dissipative particle dynamics simulations represent diverse molecular interaction calculation methods that can effectively model pollutant behavior at environmental interfaces from atomic to mesoscopic scales. These methods provide a rich variety of information on pollutant interactions with water surfaces. This review synthesizes the advancements in applying typical computational methods to the formation, adsorption, binding, and catalytic conversion of pollutants at water interfaces. By drawing on recent advancements, we critically examine the current challenges and offer our perspective on future directions. This review seeks to advance our understanding of computational techniques for elucidating pollutant behavior at water interfaces, a critical aspect of water research.

Control priority based on source-specific DALYs of PM2.5-bound heavy metals by PMF-PSCF-IsoSource model in urban and suburban Beijing

To determine the priority control sources, an approach was proposed to evaluate the source-specific contribution to health risks from inhaling PM2.5-bound heavy metals (PBHMs). A total of 482 daily PM2.5 samples were collected from urban and suburban areas of Beijing, China, between 2018 and 2019. In addition to the PMF-PSCF model, a Pb isotopic IsoSource model was built for more reliable source apportionment. By using the comprehensive indicator of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic health risks could be compared on a unified scale. The study found that the annual average concentrations of the total PBHMs were significantly higher in suburban areas than in urban areas, with significantly higher concentrations during the heating season than during the nonheating season. Comprehensive dust accounted for the largest contribution to the concentration of PBHMs, while coal combustion contributed the most to the DALYs associated with PBHMs. These results suggest that prioritizing the control of coal combustion could effectively reduce the disease burden associated with PBHMs, leading to notable public health benefits.

The effect of green fiscal policy on green technological innovation: evidence from energy saving and emission reduction fiscal policy

The "National Comprehensive demonstration of Energy Saving and Emission Reduction Fiscal Policy" (ESER policy) is a green fiscal policy to facilitate China's green sustainable development. Green sustainable development is facilitated by green technological innovation. Thus, evaluating the influence of the ESER policy on green technological innovation is essential. This study employs the difference-in-differences model to assess the ESER policy effects. The findings suggest that the ESER policy facilitates green technological innovation, but the policy effect has inhibited green technology innovation in neighboring cities. Mechanism analysis indicates that this policy effect is realized through increasing scientific research investment intensity and promoting industrial structure upgrading. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that this policy is effective in facilitating green technological innovation when performed in eastern, non-old industrial base, non-resource-based, and high green innovation level cities. In addition, the ESER policy implemented in conjunction with innovation policy can be more effective in promoting green technological innovation. These results provide valuable insights for improving the ESER policy and offer helpful guidelines for green fiscal policymaking in other countries.

Determining an optimal control strategy for anthropogenic VOC emissions in China based on source emissions and reactivity

An evidence-based control strategy for emission reduction of VOC sources can effectively solve the regional PM2.5 and O3 compound pollution in China. We estimated the anthropogenic VOC emission inventory in China in 2018 and established a source profile database containing 129 sources based on localized detection and the latest research results. Then, the distribution of the ozone formation potential (OFP) and secondary organic aerosol formation potential (SOAFP) for emission sources was analyzed. Moreover, priority control routes for VOC emission sources were proposed for different periods. Anthropogenic VOC emissions in China reached 27,211.8 Gg in 2018, and small passenger cars, industrial protective coatings, biomass burning, heavy trucks, printing, asphalt paving, oil storage and transportation, coking, and oil refining were the main contributors. Industrial protective coatings, small passenger cars, and biomass burning all contributed significantly to OFP and SOAFP. Priority in emission reduction control should be given to industrial protective coatings, small passenger cars, heavy trucks, coking, printing, asphalt paving, chemical fibers, and basic organic chemical sources over the medium and long term in China. In addition, the priority control route for VOC emission sources should be adjusted according to the variations in VOC emission characteristics and regional differences, so as to obtain the maximum environmental benefits.

Development of dual strain microalgae cultivation system for the direct carbon dioxide utilization of power plant flue gas

This study aims to propose a biological system that allows for direct utilization of flue gas for carbon dioxide capture and utilization by microalgae. The strain Chlorella sp. ABC-001 is employed for its high growth rate as well as lipid and carbohydrate content. Toxicity tests showed that cell growth was unaffected by NO, but the presence of SO2 showed critical damage on cell growth. Hence, an extremophile alga, Galdieria sulphuraria 5587.1 was applied to build a dual-strain cultivation system to mitigate the effect of SO2 toxicity and increase CO2 capture efficiency. All SO2 was removed by Galdieria culture and the system exhibited stable growth from a simulated flue gas stream containing CO2, NO and SO2. Combined CO2 biofixation rate of 793 mg/L/d and lipid productivity of 113 mg/L/d was achieved. The results showed that this new cultivation system is a promising alternative for reducing CO2 emissions from power plants.

Comprehensive Qualitative and Quantitative Colorimetric Sensing of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Monolayered Metal-Organic Framework Films

Cross-responsive chemical sensors are in high demand owing to their ability to distinguish a broad range of analytes. In this study, a vapochromic sensor array based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which exhibits distinct patterns when exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and humidity, is developed. Conventional sensor arrays consist of various receptors that produce different responses. The vapochromic MOF-based sensor comprises dicopper paddlewheel clusters and dimethylamine azobenzene as binary colorimetric sensing moieties. Upon exposure to VOCs, the constructed sensor encompasses a broad spectrum of colors, ranging from green to red. Furthermore, the color of the MOF is influenced by the solvent used during the pretreatment. Consequently, monolayered MOF thin films can be adapted to multicomponent array systems by immersing the MOF in different solvents. This system provides both qualitative and quantitative sensing, generating unique color patterns corresponding to specific VOC types. Notably, the sensor successfully discriminates each of 14 common VOCs and water and accurately categorizes unknown samples. Moreover, the system undergoes reversible color changes in response to humidity, obviating the need for high-temperature regeneration steps. This novel approach offers insights into the versatile applications of MOFs by creating a colorimetric sensor array capable of detecting various analytes.

Effects of NO2 and SO2 on the secondary organic aerosol formation from β-pinene photooxidation

Elucidating the effects of anthropogenic pollutants on the photooxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds is crucial to understanding the fundamental mechanisms of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. Here, the impacts of NO2 and SO2 on SOA formation from the photooxidation of a representative monoterpene, β-pinene, were investigated by a number of laboratory studies. The results indicated NO2 enhanced the SOA mass concentrations and particle number concentrations under both low and high β-pinene conditions. This could be rationalized that the increased O3 concentrations upon the NOx photolysis was helpful for the generation of more amounts of O3-oxidized products, which accelerated the SOA nucleation and growth. Combing with NO2, the promotion of the SOA yield by SO2 was mainly reflected in the increase of mass concentration, which might be due to the elimination of the newly formed particles by the initially formed particles. The observed low oxidation degree of SOA might be attributed to the fast growth of SOA, resulting in the uptake of less oxygenated gas-phase species onto the particle phase. The present findings have important implications for SOA formation affected by anthropogenic-biogenic interactions in the ambient atmosphere.

Model Simulations and Predictions of Hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, China: Roles of Aqueous Aerosols and Atmospheric Acidity

Hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) has been found to be an abundant organosulfur aerosol compound in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region with a measured maximum daily mean concentration of up to 10 μg per cubic meter in winter. However, the production medium of HMS in aerosols is controversial, and it is unknown whether chemical transport models are able to capture the variations of HMS during individual haze events. In this work, we modify the parametrization of HMS chemistry in the nested-grid GEOS-Chem chemical transport model, whose simulations provide a good account of the field measurements during winter haze episodes. We find the contribution of the aqueous aerosol pathway to total HMS is about 36% in winter in Beijing, due primarily to the enhancement effect of the ionic strength on the rate constants of the reaction between dissolved formaldehyde and sulfite. Our simulations suggest that the HMS-to-inorganic sulfate ratio will increase from the baseline of 7% to 13% in the near future, given the ambitious clean air and climate mitigation policies for the BTH region. The more rapid reductions in emissions of SO2 and NOx compared to NH3 alter the atmospheric acidity, which is a critical factor leading to the rising importance of HMS in particulate sulfur species.

In situ biomass burning enhanced the contribution of biogenic sources to sulfate aerosol in subtropical cities

Sulfurous gases released by biogenic sources play a key role in the global sulfur cycle. However, the contribution of biogenic sources to sulfate aerosol in the urban atmosphere has received little attention. Emission sources and formation process of sulfate in Guangzhou, a subtropical mega-city in China, were clarified using multiple methods, including isotope tracers and chemical markers. The δ18O of sulfate suggested that secondary sulfate was the dominant component (84 %) of sulfate aerosol, which mainly formed by transition metal ion (TMI) catalyzed oxidation (31 %) and OH radical oxidation (30 %). The factors driving secondary sulfate formation were revealed using a tree boosting model, which suggested that NH3, temperature, and oxidants were the most important factors. The δ34S of sulfate indicated that biogenic sources accounted for annual average of 26.0 % of the sulfate, which increased to 30.4 % in winter monsoon period. Rice straw burning enhanced sulfate formation by promoting the release of reduced sulfur from soil, which is rapidly converted into sulfate under a subtropical urban atmosphere with high concentration of NH3 and oxidants. This study revealed the important influence of rice straw burning on biogenic sulfur emission during the rice harvest, thereby providing insight into the sulfur cycle and regional air pollution.

Characterization of summertime single aerosol particles in Chengdu (China): Interannual evolution and impact of COVID-19 lockdown

To investigate the interannual evolution of air pollution in summer and the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on local pollution in Chengdu, China, single aerosol particles were continuously measured in three summer periods: the regular period in 2020 (RP2020); the regular period in 2022 (RP2022); and the lockdown period in 2022 (LP2022). It was found that, from RP2020 to RP2022, the mass concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2 and NO2 decreased by 25.6 %, 24.7 %, 28.8 % and 38.5 %, respectively, while the concentration of O3 increased by 11.0 %. Affected by regional transport, there was no significant decrease in the concentrations of various pollutants during LP2022. All single aerosol particles could be classified into seven categories: vehicle emissions (VE), dust, biomass burning (BB), coal combustion (CC), K mixed with sulfate (KSO4), K mixed with nitrate (KNO3) and K mixed with sulfate and nitrate (KSN) particles. From RP2020 to RP2022, the contributions of BB and CC particles decreased by 12.1 % and 0.9 %, respectively, while VE and dust particles increased by 3.6 % and 2.5 %, respectively; and compared to RP2022, the contributions of VE, dust and CC particles in LP2022 decreased by 22.2 %, 11.0 % and 12.7 %, respectively. The high PM2.5 pollution events in RP2020 and RP2022 were mainly caused by combustion sources (BB and CC, 51.6 %) and VE (38.3 %) particles, respectively, while the pollution event in LP2022 was contributed by BB (27.0 %) and secondary inorganic (KSO4, KNO3 and KSN, 60.2 %) particles. The formation mechanisms of different pollution events were further validated by WRF-Chem results. Although the potential source areas of particles showed a shrinking trend from RP2020 to RP2022, regional transport still caused high PM2.5 pollution events during LP2022. Photochemical processes dominated the formation of KSO4 particles, while the KNO3 and KSN particles were mainly generated by liquid-phase reactions, and this effect increased year by year.

Sources and composition of elemental carbon during haze events in North China by a high time-resolved study

Despite the implementation of stringent emission reduction measures in the past year, severe winter haze events still occurred frequently in North China, with only marginal decreases observed in elemental carbon (EC) concentrations. EC not only constitutes a fraction of particle mass but also interacts with boundary layer and influences haze formation. Given the complex composition of EC, characterizing its sources and composition during haze processes is challenging yet crucial for understanding haze formation and evolution. Here, hourly-resolution PM2.5 samples were collected during three different haze event (P1-P3) in the North China Plain to investigate dynamic changes in EC source across different haze processes. The average EC concentrations and char/soot ratios were 9.94 ± 4.80 μgC·m-3, 14.5 ± 6.93 μgC·m-3, 15.9 ± 5.54 μgC·m-3, and 2.42 ± 0.98, 2.70 ± 0.88, 2.61 ± 0.95 for P1, P2 and P3, respectively. Backward trajectory analysis showed distinct variations in EC concentration and composition under the influence of different air masses during the three haze events, with local air masses influenced days exhibiting higher EC concentrations and char/soot ratios. The char/soot ratio based diagnostic method suggested that EC was predominantly influenced by coal combustion and vehicle emissions. Further positive matrix factorization analysis suggested that biomass burning and residential coal combustion were the main contributors of EC (58 %) and played a dominant role in driving variations in EC concentrations during haze episodes. Potential source contribution function analysis results highlight that local biomass burning and residential coal combustion could be major reason for the EC elevation in different haze events. Our results provide valuable insights into the sources and composition of EC during haze events, facilitating the implementation of effective measures for mitigating both EC and PM pollution.

Traceability of atmospheric ammonia in a suburban area of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region

Ammonia (NH3) is one of the most important sources that have been linked to the formation of PM2.5. Therefore, it is important to study the source contributions to atmospheric NH3 for air pollution control. Here we used 15N natural abundance (expressed by δ15N) values to quantify the source contributions to atmospheric NH3 in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, which suffers from the country's worst air pollution. Results showed that from 2017 to 2019, the annual mean δ15N-NH3 value at the livestock site (-27.5 ± 6.0 ‰) was lower than at cropland (-20.7 ± 6.0 ‰) and rural residential sites (-22.1 ± 7.4 ‰), while their concentrations were the opposite. Seasonal mean δ15N-NH3 values were the highest in winter and lowest in summer, whereas monthly mean δ15N-NH3 values were the highest in January and lowest in June. The isotope mixing model results showed that agricultural sources account for 64.5 ± 13.5 % of year-round total NH3 emissions, while industrial and other sources contributed 27.4 and 8.1 %, respectively. However, the contribution of industrial sources was higher than that of agricultural sources in January. Our results indicated that the contribution of agricultural sources has decreased after the implementation of air pollution control policies in this region suggesting that NH3 abatement from agricultural sources is effective. However, further refinement of agricultural emission abatement measures will be required, accompanied by a greater focus on controlling winter non-agricultural sources.

Changing Responses of PM2.5 and Ozone to Source Emissions in the Yangtze River Delta Using the Adjoint Model

China's industrial restructuring and pollution controls have altered the contributions of individual sources to varying air quality over the past decade. We used the GEOS-Chem adjoint model and investigated the changing sensitivities of PM2.5 and ozone (O3) to multiple species and sources from 2010 to 2020 in the central Yangtze River Delta (YRDC), the largest economic region in China. Controlling primary particles and SO2 from industrial and residential sectors dominated PM2.5 decline, and reducing CO from multiple sources and ≥C3 alkenes from vehicles restrained O3. The chemical regime of O3 formation became less VOC-limited, attributable to continuous NOX abatement for specific sources, including power plants, industrial combustion, cement production, and off-road traffic. Regional transport was found to be increasingly influential on PM2.5. To further improve air quality, management of agricultural activities to reduce NH3 is essential for alleviating PM2.5 pollution, while controlling aromatics, alkenes, and alkanes from industry and gasoline vehicles is effective for O3. Reducing the level of NOX from nearby industrial combustion and transportation is helpful for both species. Our findings reveal the complexity of coordinating control of PM2.5 and O3 pollution in a fast-developing region and support science-based policymaking for other regions with similar air pollution problems.

MAX-DOAS and in-situ measurements of aerosols and trace gases over Dongying, China: Insight into ozone formation sensitivity based on secondary HCHO

This study presents a comprehensive overview of the atmospheric pollutants including Sulfur dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Formaldehyde (HCHO), Particulate Matter PM; PM10: diameter ≤ 10 µm, and PM2.5: diameter ≤ 2.5 µm), and Ozone (O3), over Dongying (Shandong Province) from March-April 2018 and September-October 2019 by employing ground-based Multiple Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) observations along with the in-situ measurements attained by the national air quality monitoring platform. The concentrations of SO2 and NO2 were under the acceptable level, while both PM2.5, and PM10 were higher than the safe levels as prescribed by national and international air quality standards. The results depict that 21% of the total observation days were found to be complex polluted days (PM2.5 > 35 µg/m3 and O3 > 160 µg/m3). The secondary HCHO was used for accurate analysis of O3 sensitivity. A difference of 11.40% and 10% during March-April 2018 and September-October 2019 respectively in O3 sensitivity was found between HCHOtotal/NO2 and HCHOsec/NO2. The results indicate that primary HCHO have significant contribution in HCHO. O3 formation predominantly remained to be in VOC-limited and transitional regime during March-April 2018 and September-October 2019 in Dongying. These results imply that concurrent control of both NOx and VOCs would benefit in ozone reductions. Additionally, the criteria pollutants (PM, SO2, and NO2) depicted strong correlations with each other except for O3 for which weak correlation coefficient was obtained with all the species. This study will prove to be baseline for designing of air pollution control strategies.

Direct generation of DBPs from city dust during chlorine-based disinfection

Chlorine-based disinfectants, such as sodium hypochlorite, are extensively used in our daily lives. In particular, during the recent Covid-19 pandemic and post-pandemic period, excessive amounts of chlorine-based disinfectants were used both indoors and outdoors to interrupt virus transmission. However, the interaction between disinfectants and city dust during the disinfection process has not been sufficiently evaluated. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation into the intrinsic characteristics (e.g. morphology, size, elemental composition, and organic content, etc.) of dust collected from various indoor and outdoor areas. The results showed that the organic carbon content of indoor dust reached 6.14 %, with a corresponding measured dissolved organic carbon value of 4.17 ± 0.23 mg/g (normalized to the dust weight). Concentrations of regulated DBPs, resulting from the interaction between dust and NaClO, ranged from 57.78 ± 2.72 to 102.80 ± 22.63 µg/g for THMs and from 119.18 ± 6.50 to 285.14 ± 36.95 µg/g for HAAs (normalized to the dust weight). More significantly, using non-target analysis through gas chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-qTOF-MS), we identified a total of 68, 89, and 87 types of halogenated DBPs from three typical indoor and outdoor sites (R-QH, C-JS, and W-BR, respectively). These unknown DBPs included compounds with higher toxicity compared to regulated DBPs. These findings highlight that city dust is a significant source of DBP generation during chlorine-based disinfection, posing potential harm to both the ecological environment and human health.

Achievements and challenges in improving air quality in China: Analysis of the long-term trends from 2014 to 2022

Due to the implementation of air pollution control measures in China, air quality has significantly improved, although there are still additional issues to be addressed. This study used the long-term trends of air pollutants to discuss the achievements and challenges in further improving air quality in China. The Kolmogorov-Zurbenko (KZ) filter and multiple-linear regression (MLR) were used to quantify the meteorology-related and emission-related trends of air pollutants from 2014 to 2022 in China. The KZ filter analysis showed that PM2.5 decreased by 7.36 ± 2.92% yr-1, while daily maximum 8-h ozone (MDA8 O3) showed an increasing trend with 3.71 ± 2.89% yr-1 in China. The decrease in PM2.5 and increase in MDA8 O3 were primarily attributed to changes in emission, with the relative contribution of 85.8% and 86.0%, respectively. Meteorology variations, including increased ambient temperature, boundary layer height, and reduced relative humidity, also contributed to the reduction of PM2.5 and the enhancement of MDA8 O3. The emission-related trends of PM2.5 and MDA8 O3 exhibited continuous decrease and increase, respectively, from 2014 to 2022, while the variation rates slowed during 2018-2020 compared to that during 2014-2017, highlighting the challenges in further improving air quality, particularly in simultaneously reducing PM2.5 and O3. This study recommends reducing NH3 emissions from the agriculture sector in rural areas and transport emissions in urban areas to further decrease PM2.5 levels. Addressing O3 pollution requires the reduction of O3 precursor gases based on site-specific atmospheric chemistry considerations.

Effects of VOC emissions from chemical industrial parks on regional O3-PM2.5 compound pollution in the Yangtze River Delta

Ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) compound pollution has emerged as a primary form of air pollution in Chinese urban. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as common precursors of O3 and PM2.5, play a significant role in air pollution control. Chemical industrial parks (CIPs) are crucial emission sources of VOCs and have garnered significant attention. This study focused on 142 CIPs located in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) to investigate the characteristics of VOC emissions from CIPs and their impact on O3-PM2.5 compound pollution, considering the enhanced atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC). The Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx) model was employed for this analysis. The results show that VOC emissions from CIPs contributed significantly to regional O3 and secondary organic aerosol (SOA), accounting for 17.1 % and 18.18 % of the anthropogenic sources, respectively. Regions exhibiting the highest contributions were located along the Hangzhou Bay. Compared with 2014, an elevation in the contribution of VOC emissions from CIPs to the annual average concentrations of MDA8 O3 and SOA in the YRD in 2017 by 0.069 μg/m3 and 0.007 μg/m3, respectively. During episodes of compound pollution, the concentration of atmospheric oxidant (HOx + NO3) was 28.65 % higher than during clean days, and significant positive correlations were observed between hydrogen oxygen radicals (HOx) and maximum daily 8-h average (MDA8 O3) as well as between HOx and SOA, exhibiting correlation coefficients of 0.86 and 0.48, respectively. Effective control measures for VOC emissions, particularly from the pharmaceutical and petrochemical industry parks located along Hangzhou Bay, are essential in curtailing the production rate of HOx and in regulating AOC levels in the YRD. Maintaining the daily average HOx concentration below 10 ppt would be a valuable strategy in achieving coordinated control of O3 and SOA, thus aiding in the alleviation of O3-PM2.5 compound pollution in the YRD.

VOC emitted by biopharmaceutical industries: Source profiles, health risks, and secondary pollution

The biopharmaceutical industry contributes substantially to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions, causing growing concerns and social developmental conflicts. This study conducted an on-site investigation of the process-based emission of VOCs from three biopharmaceutical enterprises. In the workshops of the three enterprises, 26 VOCs were detected, which could be sorted into 4 classes: hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, oxygen-containing compounds, and nitrogen-containing compounds. Ketones were the main components of waste gases, accounting for 44.13%-77.85% of the overall VOCs. Process-based source profiles were compiled for each process unit, with the fermentation and extraction units of tiamulin fumarate being the main source of VOC emissions. Dimethyl heptanone, vinyl acetate, diethylamine, propylene glycol methyl ether (PGME), and benzene were screened as priority pollutants through a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation system. Ground level concentration simulation results of the Gauss plume diffusion model demonstrated that the diffusivity of VOCs in the atmosphere was relatively high, indicating potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks 1.5-2 km downwind. Furthermore, the process-based formation potentials of ozone and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) were determined and indicated that N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, dimethyl heptanone, and PGME should be preferentially controlled to reduce the ozone formation potential, whereas the control of benzene and chlorobenzene should be prioritized to reduce the generation of SOAs. Our results provide a basis for understanding the characteristics of VOC emission by biopharmaceutical industries and their diffusion, potentially allowing the development of measures to reduce health risks and secondary pollution.

When and where to exercise: An assessment of personal exposure to urban tropical ambient airborne pollutants in Singapore

BACKGROUND

Physical activity is associated with health benefits and has been shown to reduce mortality risk. However, exposure to high levels of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during exercise can potentially reduce the health benefits of physical activity. This study aims to assess and compare the PM2.5 concentrations of different exercise venues in Singapore by their location attributes and time of day.

METHODS

Personal PM2.5 exposures (μg/m3) at 24 common outdoor exercise venues in Singapore over 49 sampling days were collected using real-time personal sensors from September 2017 to January 2020. Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare PM2.5 concentrations between different timings (peak (0700-0900; 1800-2000) vs. non-peak (0600-0700; 0900-1800; 2000-2300); weekend vs. weekday), and location attributes (near major roads (<50 m) vs. away from major roads (≥50 m)). Multivariable linear regression models were used to assess the associations between location attributes, timings and ambient PM2.5 with personal PM2.5 concentration, adjusting for potential confounders.

RESULTS

Compared with peak hours, exercising during non-peak hours was associated with a significantly lower PM2.5 exposure (median, 17.8 μg/m3 during peak vs. 14.5 μg/m3 during non-peak; P = 0.006). Exercise venues away from major roads have significantly lower PM2.5 concentrations as compared to those located next to major roads (median, 14.4 μg/m3 away from major roads vs. 18.5 μg/m3 next to major roads; P < 0.001). Individuals who exercised in parks experienced the highest PM2.5 exposure (median, 55.0 μg/m3) levels in the afternoon during 1400-1500. Furthermore, ambient PM2.5 concentration was significantly and positively associated with personal PM2.5 exposure (β = 0.85, P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that exercising outdoors in the urban environment exposes individuals to differential levels of PM2.5 at different times of the day. Further research should investigate a wider variety of outdoor exercise venues, explore different types of air pollutants, and consider the varying activity patterns of individuals.

Roles of historical land use/cover and nitrogen fertilizer application changes on ammonia emissions in farmland ecosystem from 1990 to 2020 in China

In the past decades, China has witnessed significant changes in its land use/land cover (LULC) pattern. These changes have led to a direct impact on ammonia (NH3) emissions in soil background, and indirectly affected the total nitrogen fertilizer (N-fertilizer) application, crop planting amount and the resulting straw mass through the changes of cropland area. Great changes have also taken place in the amount and structure of fertilizer application in China, which affects the NH3 emissions from farmland ecosystems caused by N-fertilizer application. The aforementioned changes have led to significant alterations in NH3 emissions from China's farmland ecosystems over the past 30 years. The process of these changes remains to be analyzed, and the contributions of LULC changes and N-fertilizer application in this process are yet to be assessed. This study aims to investigate the NH3 emission changes and spatiotemporal variation characteristics from farmland ecosystems during 1990 and 2020 due to the LULC changes. Additionally, the study employs scenario analysis method to discuss the effects of LULC changes and N-fertilizer application changes on NH3 emissions in farmland ecosystems. Results indicate that there is evident spatiotemporal heterogeneity in China's LULC pattern, particularly in eastern China. The southeast region is predominantly characterized by the conversion of cropland into construction land. Moreover, some regions such as Northwest China and Northeast China have experienced the conversion of other land types into cropland, significantly influenced by national development policies. From 1990 to 2020, the national NH3 emissions from farmland ecosystem range from 3294.75 Gg to 4064.20 Gg. NH3 emissions and their interannual variation in farmland ecosystems exhibit significant differences across various regions. The regions with higher contributions to NH3 emissions in farmland ecosystems are East China, Central China, and North China, accounting for 25.32 %-37.26 %, 18.85 %-22.46 % and 11.24 %-18.50 % of the total emissions, respectively. NH3 emissions in each region are influenced by cropland area, N-fertilizer application, and regional development characteristics. Compared to LULC changes, changes in N-fertilizer application have a more pronounced impact on NH3 emission changes in farmland ecosystems. From 1990 to 2020, the contribution (increase or decrease) of N-fertilizer application changes to NH3 emission changes in farmland ecosystems in China ranges from 0.11 % to 16.61 %, while the contribution (increase or decrease) of LULC changes ranges from 0.47 % to 2.38 %. South China demonstrates a unique situation regarding the influence of LULC changes. This region has a relatively small cropland area, and fluctuations in cropland area significantly affect NH3 emissions in farmland ecosystems. The influence of policies is evident. From the changes in cropland area in Northwest China and Northeast China to changes in N-fertilizer application, policy changes have consistently impacted the changes in NH3 emissions in China's farmland ecosystems. From "soft policies" involving encouragement and guidance to "hard policies" encompassing the establishment of necessary targets, the degree of strictness in policy directly affects the timeliness of policies effectiveness. The results of this study indicate that reducing the application of N-fertilizers is the primary approach to reducing NH3 emissions in China's farmland ecosystems. In terms of policy guidance, compared to implementing structural and pathway adjustments, implementing clear total control of fertilizer usage is a timely and effective choice for reducing NH3 emissions.

Isotopic comparison of ammonium between two summertime field campaigns in 2013 and 2021 at a background site of North China

Ammonia (NH3) is the primary atmospheric alkaline gas, playing a crucial role in the atmospheric chemistry. Recently, non-agricultural emissions have been identified as the dominant sources of NH3 in urban areas. However, few studies have quantified the contributions of different sources to regional NH3. This study conducted two summertime field observations in 2013 and 2021 at a background site of North China to comprehensively explore the regional variations in concentration, nitrogen isotope composition (δ15N), and sources of ammonium (NH4+). The results indicate that NHx (NHx = NH3 + NH4+) concentration has increased in 2021, but the fNH4+ (NH4+/ NHx) has decreased significantly. The δ15N-NH4+ values show a significant increase, ranging from -4.7 ± 8.1 ‰ to +12.0 ± 2.4 ‰. The increase can be attributed to two primary factors: changes in fNH4+ resulting from the reduction of atmospheric acid gases and alterations in the sources of NH3. Bayesian simulation analysis reveals substantial variations in NH3 sources between 2013 and 2021 observations. Non-agricultural sources have significantly increased their contribution to NHx concentration, with vehicle exhaust and NH3 slip experiencing growth rates of 187 % and 104 %, respectively. Our results confirm the dominate contribution of non-agricultural sources to regional NH3 at the present stage and propose relevant mitigation strategies, which would provide essential insights for reducing NH3 emissions in North China.

Impacts of local soil and vehicle NOx emissions on ground-level NO2 concentrations on a university campus in the city of Shenyang, China

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a ubiquitous atmospheric pollutant, and fossil fuel combustion is generally considered its predominant source in and around urban areas. As the total nitrogen deposition is high over here, soil NOx emissions from urban green space might also be an important local source of ground-level NO2. In this study, Willems badge samplers were employed to monitor the spatial and seasonal variations of 2-week mean atmospheric NO2 concentrations at a height of 1.7 m on an urban campus in Northeast China from November 2020 to December 2021. We found considerable small-scale spatial variations of ground-level NO2 concentrations on the campus during the growing season, with local soil NOx emissions as the main driver. According to its linear correlation with green space coverage, the increment in ground-level NO2 concentration was partitioned into two components, with one ascribed to the local soil source (referred to as NO2-Isoil) and the other the local vehicle source (NO2-Ivehicle). NO2-Isoil generally reached a maximum (as high as 25.6 μg/m3) during early spring, while its ratio to the background value generally reached a maximum (could be >1) during late spring and could reach 0.52 to 0.92 during summer. Therefore, soil NOx emissions were an important source of ground-level NO2 on the campus, with the contribution even higher than those of other anthropogenic sources during late spring. Even with light traffic on the campus, NO2-Ivehicle could reach 0.48 times the background value at a site with high frequencies of warm starts.

Distinct linear polarization of core-shell particles at near-backscattering directions

The degree of linear polarization (-P12/P11) of scattered light by particles with a core-shell structure may display a distinct negative minimum at near-backscattering directions. However, the specific range of microphysical parameters within which this phenomenon occurs and the underlying physical mechanism are still unclear. Therefore, this study systematically investigated the impacts of particle size, shell-core ratio and refractive index on the negative minimum of -P12/P11 at near-backscattering angles for both coated spheres and coated super-spheroids. The findings reveal that the pronounced negative minimum at near-backscattering angles mostly appeared when the size parameter defined in terms of the mean radius was smaller than approximately 14.5 (e.g., the mean radius is smaller than approximately 2 μm at 0.865 µm wavelength) and the shell-core ratio was in a range of 1.4-1.9. The presence of weakly- and moderately-absorptive shells would lead to pronounced negative polarization at near backscattering directions. However, as the core absorption increased, the amplitude of negative minimum decreased and then stabilized. As for coated super-spheroids, the non-sphericity of the shell tended to suppress the negative polarization at near-backscattering directions. As a result, the pronounced negative minimum (<-0.4) mostly appeared when the aspect ratio and roundness of the shell were close to unity (the overall shape of the particle was nearly-spherical). However, the negative minimum of -P12/P11 showed little dependence on the shape of the core. Furthermore, the Debye series approach was employed to investigate the underlying mechanism of the negative minimum of -P12/P11 for coated spheres. The results demonstrated that the interference among the partial waves underwent one internal reflection on the shell-medium interface and, without internal reflection on the core-shell interface, led to the pronounced negative polarization at near-backscattering angles. When the core absorption was significant, the interference became negligible and the amplitude of the negative minimum was suppressed. This study enhances our understanding the scattering characteristic of coated particles and has implications in aerosol classification and polarized remote sensing.

Age evolution of secondary organic aerosol: Impacts of regional transport and aerosol volatility

In this study, a revised CMAQ model incorporating source and temporal apportioning functions has been used to analyze the aging characteristics of SOA in East Asia. The results show that in the aerosol phase, the fraction of the non-volatile components typically fluctuates around 75 %-95 %, and aromatic hydrocarbon precursors contribute significantly to SOA, accounting for 45.6 %-72.7 % in winter and 29.1 %-52.7 % in summer. Transport due to meteorological conditions does not affect the SOA volatility profile in the cities, while regional source composition has been found to be important for the characterization of the properties of SOA in cities. When the SOA regional composition type is a multi-region-imported-dominated type (MRT), its age composition type tends to be an old-age-SOA-dominated type (OAT) (>48 h). Additionally, transport also causes fluctuations in the range of hourly SOA with atmospheric age of 96 h or higher. The SOAs normally transport through seasonal monsoon and could migrate longer in winter (700-1500 km in January) than in other seasons (250-900 km in April; 500-1200 km in July; 300-1000 km in October). Additionally, in winter, non-volatile SOA generally has a longer transport distance (700-1600 km) than semi- and low-volatile SOA (300-1300 km and 600-1500 km). Furthermore, during the transport process, geographical barriers have negligible impact on SOA in the 48+ hour age group.

Dominant Contribution of NO3 Radical to NO3- Formation during Heavy Haze Episodes: Insights from High-Time Resolution of Dual Isotopes Δ17O and δ18O

δ18O is widely used to track nitrate (NO3-) formation but overlooks NO3 radical reactions with hydrocarbons (HCs), particularly in heavily emitting hazes. This study introduces high-time resolution Δ17O-NO3- as a powerful tool to quantify NO3- formation during five hazes in three cities. Results show significant differences between Δ17O-NO3- and δ18O-NO3- in identifying NO3- formation. δ18O-NO3- results suggested N2O5 hydrolysis (62.0-88.4%) as the major pathway of NO3- formation, while Δ17O-NO3- shows the NO3- formation contributions of NO2 + OH (17.7-66.3%), NO3 + HC (10.8-49.6%), and N2O5 hydrolysis (22.9-33.3%), revealing significant NO3 + HC contribution (41.7-56%) under severe pollution. Furthermore, NO3- formation varies with temperatures, NOx oxidation rate (NOR), and pollution levels. Higher NO2 + OH contribution and lower NO3 + HC contribution were observed at higher temperatures, except for low NOR haze where higher NO2 + OH contributions were observed at low temperatures (T ← 10 °C). This emphasizes the significance of NO2 + OH in emission-dominated haze. Contributions of NO2 + OH and NO3 + HC relate to NOR as positive (fP1 = 3.0*NOR2 - 2.4*NOR + 0.8) and negative (fP2 = -2.3*NOR2 + 1.8*NOR) quadratic functions, respectively, with min/max values at NOR = 0.4. At mild pollution, NO2 + OH (58.1 ± 22.2%) dominated NO3- formation, shifting to NO3 + HC (35.5 ± 16.3%) during severe pollution. Additionally, high-time resolution Δ17O-NO3- reveals that morning-evening rush hours and high temperatures at noon promote the contributions of NO3 + HC and NO2 + OH, respectively. Our results suggested that the differences in the NO3- pathway are attributed to temperatures, NOR, and pollution levels. Furthermore, high-time resolution Δ17O-NO3- is vital for quantifying NO3 + HC contribution during severe hazes.

Insights into the Peroxide-Bicyclic Intermediate Pathway of Aromatic Photooxidation: Experimental Yields and NOx-Dependency of Ring-Opening and Ring-Retaining Products

Aromatic hydrocarbons are important contributors to the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosols in urban environments. The different parallel pathways in aromatic oxidation, however, remain inadequately understood. Here, we investigated the production yields and chemical distributions of gas-phase tracer products during the photooxidation of alkylbenzenes at atmospheric OH levels with NOx present using high-resolution mass spectrometers. The peroxide-bicyclic intermediate pathway emerged as the major pathway in aromatic oxidation, accounting for 52.1 ± 12.6%, 66.1 ± 16.6%, and 81.4 ± 24.3% of the total OH oxidation of toluene, m-xylene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, respectively. Notably, the yields of bicyclic nitrates produced from the reactions of bicyclic peroxy radicals (BPRs) with NO were considerably lower (3-5 times) than what the current mechanism predicted. Alongside traditional ring-opening products formed through the bicyclic pathway (dicarbonyls and furanones), we identified a significant proportion of carbonyl olefinic acids generated via the 1,5-aldehydic H-shift occurring in subsequent reactions of BPRs + NO, contributing 4-7% of the carbon flow in aromatic oxidation. Moreover, the observed NOx-dependencies of ring-opening and ring-retaining product yields provide insights into the competitive nature of reactions involving BPRs with NO, HO2, and RO2, which determine the refined product distributions and offer an explanation for the discrepancies between the experimental and model-based results.

Astaxanthin alleviates fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-induced lung injury in rats by suppressing ferroptosis and apoptosis

Objectives: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5), a small molecule particulate pollutant, can reach the lungs via respiration and cause lung damage. Currently, effective strategies and measures are lacking to prevent and treat the pulmonary toxicity of PM2.5. Astaxanthin (ASX), a natural xanthophyll carotenoid, has attracted attention due to its unique biological activity. Our research aims to probe into the prevention and treatment of ASX on PM2.5-induced lung injury and clarify its potential mechanism. Methods: Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were given olive oil and different concentrations of ASX orally daily for 21 days. PM2.5 suspension was instilled into the trachea of rats every two days for one week to successfully develop the PM2.5 exposure model in the PM2.5-exposed and ASX-treated groups of rats. The bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was collected, and the content of lung injury-related markers was detected. Histomorphological changes and expression of markers associated with oxidative stress, inflammation, iron death, and apoptosis were detected in lung tissue. Results: PM2.5 exposure can cause changes in lung histochemistry and increase the expression levels of TP, AKP, ALB, and LDH in the BALF. Simultaneously, inflammatory responses and oxidative stress were promoted in rat lung tissue after exposure to particulate matter. Additionally, ASX preconditioning can alleviate histomorphological changes, oxidative stress, and inflammation caused by PM2.5 and reduce PM2.5-related ferroptosis and apoptosis. Conclusion: ASX preconditioning can alleviate lung injury after PM2.5 exposure by inhibiting ferroptosis and apoptosis.

Wintertime Formation of Large Sulfate Particles in China and Implications for Human Health

Outdoor air pollution causes millions of premature deaths annually worldwide. Sulfate is a major component of particulate pollution. Winter sulfate observations in China show both high concentrations and an accumulation mode with a modal size >1 μm. However, we find that this observed size distribution cannot be simulated using classical gaseous and aqueous phase formation (CSF) or proposed aerosol-processing formation (APF) mechanisms. Specifically, the CSF simulation underestimates sulfate concentrations by 76% over megacities in China and predicts particle size distributions with a modal size of ∼0.35 μm, significantly smaller than observations. Although incorporating the APF mechanism in the atmospheric chemical model notably improves sulfate concentration simulation with reasonable parameters, the simulated sulfate particle size distribution remains similar to that using the CSF mechanism. We further conduct theoretical analyses and show that particles with diameters <0.3 μm grow rapidly (2-3 s) to 1 μm through the condensation of sulfuric acid in fresh high-temperature exhaust plumes, referred to as in-source formation (ISF). An ISF sulfate source equivalent to 15% of sulfur emissions from fossil fuel combustion largely explains both observed size distributions and mass concentrations of sulfate particles. The findings imply that ISF is a major source of wintertime micron-sized sulfate in China and underscore the importance of considering the size distribution of aerosols for accurately assessing the impacts of inorganic aerosols on radiative forcing and human health.

Role of WSOCs and pH on Ammonium Nitrate Aerosol Efflorescence: Insights into Secondary Aerosol Formation

Efflorescence of ammonium nitrate (AN) aerosols significantly impacts atmospheric secondary aerosol formation, climate, and human health. We investigated the effect of representative water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) (sucralose (SUC), glycerol (GLY), and citric acid (CA) on AN:WSOC aerosol efflorescence using vacuum Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Combining efflorescence relative humidity (ERH) measurements, heterogeneous nucleation rates, and model predictions, we found that aerosol viscosity, correlating with molecular diffusion, effectively predicted ERH variations among the AN:WSOC aerosols. WSOCs with higher viscosity (SUC and CA) hindered efflorescence, while GLY with a lower viscosity showed a minor effect. At a low AN:CA molar ratio (10:1), CA promoted ERH, likely due to CA crystallization. Increasing the droplet pH inhibited AN:CA aerosol efflorescence. In contrast, for AN:SUC and AN:GLY aerosols, efflorescence is pH-insensitive. With the addition of trivial sulfate, AN:SUC droplets exhibited two-stage efflorescence, coinciding with ammonium sulfate and AN efflorescence. Given the atmospheric abundance, the morphology, phase, and mixing state of nitrate aerosols are significant for atmospheric chemistry and physics. Our results suggest that AN:WSOCs aerosols can exist in the amorphous phase in the atmosphere, with efflorescence behavior depending on the aerosol composition, viscosity, pH, and the cation and anion interactions in a complex manner.

Characteristics and health risk assessment of indoor and outdoor PM2.5 in a rural village, in Northeast of China: impact of coal and biomass burning

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has health effects that may depend on its sources and chemical composition. In this study, characteristics of PM2.5 chemical composition and health risk assessment from Songyuan, China, were investigated during day and night in indoor and outdoor from February 4 to 19, 2021. Relative high concentrations of PM2.5 were obtained in indoor environment than outdoor, with 503.95 ± 209.62 μg/m3 during the day and 357.52 ± 232.81 μg/m3 at night for the indoor environment. Relatively high total carbon, organic carbons, elemental carbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) were obtained in indoor environment. However, the average concentrations of PAHs were higher during night (73.57 ± 43.09 ng/m3) in indoor and OPAHs during day (6.027 ± 2.960 ng/m3) in outdoor. They had different I/O distributions of these compounds during day and night. Indeno(1,2,3-cd) pyrene was the dominant PAHs, and benzanthrone was the dominant OPAHs; this is different with the previous studies. The high indoor/outdoor ratios showed the indoor coal and biomass burning greatly affect the indoor pollutants. Average ILCR health risk assessment for PAHs was all higher than 10-6 for different age gender, suggesting there has potential cancer risk existed for populations living in the rural coal and biomass burning area Songyuan, China.

Separating Daily 1 km PM2.5 Inorganic Chemical Composition in China since 2000 via Deep Learning Integrating Ground, Satellite, and Model Data

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) chemical composition has strong and diverse impacts on the planetary environment, climate, and health. These effects are still not well understood due to limited surface observations and uncertainties in chemical model simulations. We developed a four-dimensional spatiotemporal deep forest (4D-STDF) model to estimate daily PM2.5 chemical composition at a spatial resolution of 1 km in China since 2000 by integrating measurements of PM2.5 species from a high-density observation network, satellite PM2.5 retrievals, atmospheric reanalyses, and model simulations. Cross-validation results illustrate the reliability of sulfate (SO42-), nitrate (NO3-), ammonium (NH4+), and chloride (Cl-) estimates, with high coefficients of determination (CV-R2) with ground-based observations of 0.74, 0.75, 0.71, and 0.66, and average root-mean-square errors (RMSE) of 6.0, 6.6, 4.3, and 2.3 μg/m3, respectively. The three components of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs) account for 21% (SO42-), 20% (NO3-), and 14% (NH4+) of the total PM2.5 mass in eastern China; we observed significant reductions in the mass of inorganic components by 40-43% between 2013 and 2020, slowing down since 2018. Comparatively, the ratio of SIA to PM2.5 increased by 7% across eastern China except in Beijing and nearby areas, accelerating in recent years. SO42- has been the dominant SIA component in eastern China, although it was surpassed by NO3- in some areas, e.g., Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region since 2016. SIA, accounting for nearly half (∼46%) of the PM2.5 mass, drove the explosive formation of winter haze episodes in the North China Plain. A sharp decline in SIA concentrations and an increase in SIA-to-PM2.5 ratios during the COVID-19 lockdown were also revealed, reflecting the enhanced atmospheric oxidation capacity and formation of secondary particles.

Health risk assessment of workers' exposure to BTEX and PM during refueling in an urban fuel station

The proximity of fuel stations to the roads and the activities inside the station can contribute to PM and VOCs and impose health risks on station workers. The study presents the exposure and health risk assessment of the fuel station personnel to total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) and particulate matter (PM) during refueling operations. TVOCs and PM monitoring were carried out at a fuel station in Chennai, India, for 1 week in March 2021, covering both weekdays and weekends. The health risks were assessed using EPA's health impact assessment methodology. Exposure to TVOCs (3177.39 ± 5450.32 μg/m3) exceeded the EPA standard of 5 μg/m3, by more than 500 times, peaking during refueling operations. The average concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 were 76.55 ± 23.08 μg/m3, 41.81 ± 9 μg/m3, and 30.38 ± 7.56 μg/m3, respectively. The concentrations were observed to be high during morning and evening hours due to the increased traffic on the adjacent road and inside the fuel station. The synergistic health risks linked with long-term exposure to high concentrations of BTEX and PM were also estimated. At the fuel station, a significant contribution to the SOA formation potential was shown by toluene, followed by m-xylene, p-xylene, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, and benzene. Furthermore, the deposition of airborne particles in the workers' respiratory tract was calculated using the Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry model while considering the daily average exposure duration of 12 h. The results showed that 59% of PM10 particles were deposited in the head region, whereas 11% and 10% of PM2.5 and PM1 particles were deposited in the pulmonary region. Hence, the health risk assessment indicated no non-cancer risk of exposure to PM (hazard quotient = 0.13) to station personnel exposed regularly for 1 year. However, prolonged exposure to VOCs for more than 1 year can result in both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk (hazard quotient = 0.045 and cancer risk > 10-6) in workers.

Attribution of Air Quality Benefits to Clean Winter Heating Policies in China: Combining Machine Learning with Causal Inference

Heating is a major source of air pollution. To improve air quality, a range of clean heating policies were implemented in China over the past decade. Here, we evaluated the impacts of winter heating and clean heating policies on air quality in China using a novel, observation-based causal inference approach. During 2015-2021, winter heating causally increased annual PM2.5, daily maximum 8-h average O3, and SO2 by 4.6, 2.5, and 2.3 μg m-3, respectively. From 2015 to 2021, the impacts of winter heating on PM2.5 in Beijing and surrounding cities (i.e., "2 + 26" cities) decreased by 5.9 μg m-3 (41.3%), whereas that in other northern cities only decreased by 1.2 μg m-3 (12.9%). This demonstrates the effectiveness of stricter clean heating policies on PM2.5 in "2 + 26" cities. Overall, clean heating policies caused the annual PM2.5 in mainland China to reduce by 1.9 μg m-3 from 2015 to 2021, potentially avoiding 23,556 premature deaths in 2021.

Comparing sources of carbonaceous aerosols during haze and nonhaze periods in two northern Chinese cities

Radiocarbon (14C), stable carbon isotope (13C), and levoglucosan in PM2.5 were measured in two northern Chinese cities during haze events and nonhaze periods in January 2019, to ascertain the sources and their differences in carbonaceous aerosols between the two periods. The contribution of primary vehicle emissions (17.8 ± 3.7%) to total carbon in Beijing during that haze event was higher than that of primary coal combustion (7.3 ± 4.2%), and it increased significantly (7.1%) compared to the nonhaze period. The contribution of primary vehicle emissions (4.1 ± 2.8%) was close to that of primary coal combustion (4.3 ± 3.3%) during the haze event in Xi'an, and the contribution of primary vehicle emissions decreased by 5.8% compared to the nonhaze period. Primary biomass burning contributed 21.1 ± 10.5% during the haze event in Beijing and 40.9 ± 6.6% in Xi'an (with an increase of 3.3% compared with the nonhaze period). The contribution of secondary fossil fuel sources to total secondary organic carbon increased by 29.2% during the haze event in Beijing and by 18.4% in Xi'an compared to the nonhaze period. These results indicate that specific management measures for air pollution need to be strengthened in different Chinese cities in the future, that is, controlling vehicle emissions in Beijing and restricting the use of coal and biomass fuels in winter in Xi'an.

Characteristics of secondary inorganic aerosols and contributions to PM2.5 pollution based on machine learning approach in Shandong Province

Primary emissions of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants, such as SO2 and NOx have decreased in China following the implementation of a series of policies by the Chinese government to address air pollution. However, controlling secondary inorganic aerosol pollution requires attention. This study examined the characteristics of the secondary conversion of nitrate (NO3-) and sulfate (SO42-) in three coastal cities of Shandong Province, namely Binzhou (BZ), Dongying (DY), and Weifang (WF), and an inland city, Jinan (JN), during December 2021. Furthermore, the Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP), an interpretable attribution technique, was adopted to accurately calculate the contributions of secondary formations to PM2.5. The nitrogen oxidation rate exhibited a significant dependence on the concentration of O3. High humidity facilitates sulfur oxidation. Compared to BZ, DY, and WF, the secondary conversion of NO3- and SO42- was more intense in JN. The light-gradient boosting model outperformed the random forest and extreme-gradient boosting models, achieving a mean R2 value of 0.92. PM2.5 pollution events in BZ, DY, and WF were primarily attributable to biomass burning, whereas pollution in Jinan was contributed by the secondary formation of NO3- and vehicle emissions. Machine learning and the SHAP interpretable attribution technique offer a precise analysis of the causes of air pollution, showing high potential for addressing environmental concerns.

Contribution of marine biological emissions to gaseous methylamines in the atmosphere: An emission inventory based on multi-source data sets

Methylamines are a class of highly reactive organic alkaline gases in the atmosphere. At present, the gridded emission inventories of amines used in the atmospheric numerical model is mostly based on the amine/ammonia ratio method and do not consider the air-sea exchange of methylamines, which oversimplifies the emission scenario. Marine biological emissions (MBE), an important source of methylamines, has been insufficiently investigated. These shortcomings in the inventories can limit the simulation of amines by numerical models in the context of compound pollution in China. To acquire a more complete gridded inventory of amines (monomethylamine (MMA), dimethylamines (DMA), and trimethylamines (TMA)), we established a more reasonable MBE inventory of amines by using multi-source data sets (Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Chlorophyll-a (Chla), Sea Surface Salinity (SSS), NH3 column concentration (NH3), and Wind Speed (WS)), and merged it with the anthropogenic emissions (AE) inventory (by adopting the amine/ammonia ratio method and the Multi-resolution Emission Inventory for China (MEIC)). The new methodology can reveal the air-sea exchange fluxes and direction of different amines. Oceans can act as a sink for DMA and source for TMA while it can be either a source or sink for MMA. The concentration of amines above the coastal area increased significantly when the MBE was merged to the AE inventory. TMA and MMA showed significant increases, TMA increased by 43,917.0 %, and 804.0 %, in July 2015 and December 2019, respectively; while MMA increased by 2635.4 % and 0.37 % during the same periods; however, only slight changes were observed in the DMA concentration (-3.9 % in July 2015, and 1.1 % in December 2019). WS, Chla, and the total dissolved concentration of amines ([C+(s)tot]) were found to be the dominant factors affecting MBE fluxes. In addition, the emission fluxes and spatial distribution of AE, and wet deposition also affect the simulation of amines concentration.

Significantly mitigating PM2.5 pollution level via reduction of NOx emission during wintertime

Despite considerable decreases in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Chinese megacities over the past decade, many second- and third-tier cities that distribute abundant industrial enterprises are still facing great challenges for PM2.5 further reduction under the recent policy background of eliminating heavily-polluted weather. In view of core effects of NOx on PM2.5, the deeper reductions of NOx in these cities are expected to break the plateau of PM2.5 decline, however, the link between NOx emission and PM2.5 mass loading is currently lacking. Herein, we progressively construct an evaluation system for PM2.5 productions based on daily NOx emissions in a typical industrial city (Jiyuan), considering a sequence of nested parameters involving evolutions of NO2 into nitric acid and then nitrate, and contributions of nitrate to PM2.5. The evaluation system was subsequently validated to better reproduce real increasing processes for PM2.5 pollution based on 19 pollution cases, with root mean square errors of 19.2 ± 16.4 %, suggesting the feasibility of developing NOx emission indicators linked to goals of mitigating atmospheric PM2.5. Additionally, further comparative results reveal that currently high NOx emissions in this industrial city severely hinder the achievement of atmospheric PM2.5 environmental capacity targets, especially in the scenarios of high initial PM2.5 level, low planetary boundary layer height and long pollution duration. It is anticipated that these methodologies and findings would supply guidelines for further regional PM2.5 mitigation, in which source-oriented NOx indicators could also provide some orientations for industrial cleaner production such as denitrification and low nitrogen combustion.

Enhancement of NO2 Gas Sensing Properties of Polypyrrole by Polarization Doping with DBS: Experimental and DFT Studies

A new technique of polarization doping was adopted to improve NO2 gas sensing properties of the polypyrrole (PPy) sensor. PPy nanosheets polarization doped with sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) were synthesized by low-temperature polymerization. The semiagglomerated PPy nanosheets were well-dispersed and a large specific surface areas due to the introduction of dodecyl benzenesulfonate (DBS). The DBS doped PPy sensor shows excellent NO2 sensing performance. Polarization of sulfonate ions to PPy enhanced the adsorption ability of NO2 with the synergistic effect of NO2. The adsorption energy (-0.676 eV) and electron transfer (0.521 |e|) of PPy to NO2 increased greatly after doping. An unoccupied electron state is observed in the valence band electron structure of PPy/DBS after the adsorption of NO2 by calculations of Density Functional Theory (DFT). The intermolecular synergy between NO2 and PPy/DBS causes a strong polarization, resulting in a high polarization potential, which enhances the NO2 sensing performance of PPy sensor. It is of great significance to develop NO2 detection device based on PPy that works at room temperature.

Heterogeneous kinetics of the OH-initiated degradation of fenthion and parathion

Fenthion and parathion are two representative kinds of organophosphorus pesticides and widely used in agriculture. They are directly or indirectly released into the atmosphere by spraying or volatilization processes. However, their heterogeneous reactivity toward OH radicals has not yet been well understood. Therefore, this work investigated the heterogeneous kinetics of the OH-initiated degradation of surface-bound fenthion and parathion using a flow reactor. The results showed that OH radicals played an important role in the atmospheric degradation of fenthion and parathion. Their average rate constants were (7.20 ± 0.77) × 10^-12 and (10.40 ± 0.60) × 10^-12 cm³/(mol· sec) at a relative humidity (RH) and temperature of 35% and 20 °C, respectively, suggesting that they have relatively short lifetimes in the atmosphere. In addition, a negative RH dependence and a positive temperature dependence of the rate constants were observed. The Arrhenius expressions of fenthion and parathion were k₂ = (1.34 ± 0.48) × 10^-9exp[-(1432.59 ± 105.29)/T] and k₂ = (1.96 ± 1.38) × 10^-9exp[-(1619.98 ± 222.02)/T], respectively, and their overall activation energy was estimated to be (11.88 ± 0.87) and (13.48 ± 1.83) kJ/mol. The experimental results will update the kinetic data of fenthion and parathion in the atmosphere and be helpful to further understand their atmospheric transportation processes.

The role of NOx in Co-occurrence of O3 and PM2.5 pollution driven by wintertime east Asian monsoon in Hainan

Clarifying the driving forces of O3 and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) co-pollution is important to perform their synergistic control. This work investigated the co-pollution of O3 and PM2.5 in Hainan Province using an observation-based model and explainable machine learning. The O3 and PM2.5 pollution that occurs in winter is affected by the wintertime East Asian Monsoon. The O3 formation shifts from a NOx-limited regime with a low O3 production rate (PO3) in the non-pollution season to a transition regime with a high PO3 in the pollution season due to an increase in NOx concentrations. Increased O3 and atmospheric oxidation capacity promote the conversion from gas-phase precursors to aerosols. Meanwhile, the high concentration of particulate nitrate favors HONO formation via photolysis, in turn facilitating O3 production. Machine learning reveals that NOx promotes O3 and PM2.5 co-pollution during the pollution period. The PO3 shows an upward trend at the observation site from 2018 to 2022 due to the inappropriate reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and NOx in the upwind areas. Our results suggest that a deep reduction of NOx should benefit both O3 and PM2.5 pollution control in Hainan and bring new insights into improving air quality in other regions of China in the future.

Traffic safety and public health in China - Past knowledge, current status, and future directions

Transportation-related harms have developed into a social disease, threatening public safety and health in China. We aimed to increase the global understanding of traffic safety and public health in China from past knowledge, current status, and future directions by collecting, collating, and analyzing the Chinese traffic incidents reported in the published literature. A systematic search of China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Weipu, and published articles referenced in PubMed, Web of Science and ProQuest between January 1, 1988 and April 30, 2023 was performed. China encountered the first recorded traffic accident as early as three thousand years ago in the Shang Dynasty. An increase in vehicle capacity and velocity increased the traffic risks during the transition from rickshaws and livestock to motor vehicles in varying traffic environments. Humans are not only the decisive factor of a large number of vehicles, traffic routes, and environmental variables, but also the victims at the end and starting point of traffic accidents. Injuries (mechanical force, burns) and diseases (traffic-related air pollution, noise) caused by traffic activities not only threaten public health, but also cause risks to safe driving. Analysis of traffic activities and biomarkers promotes the treatment of traffic injuries in ethology and medicine. China prepared for the construction of healthy transportation in the "decade of road safety" toward an estimation of worldwide road traffic injuries in 2030. Improvement of traffic safety concerning public health under the "Outline of the National Comprehensive Three-dimensional Transportation Network Planning" in China will propel the realization of worldwide traffic environmental advancement.

Characterizing nighttime vertical profiles of atmospheric particulate matter and ozone in a megacity of south China using unmanned aerial vehicle measurements

Daytime atmospheric pollution has received wide attention, while the vertical structures of atmospheric pollutants at night play a crucial role in the photochemical process on the following day, which is still less reported. Focusing on Guangzhou, a megacity of South China, we established an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with micro detectors to collect consecutive high-resolution samples of fine particle (PM2.5), submicron particle (PM1.0), black carbon (BC) and ozone (O3) concentrations in the atmosphere, as well as the air temperature (AT) and relative humidity (RH) within a 500 m altitude during nighttime from Oct. 24th to Nov. 6th, 2018. The measurements showed that PM2.5, PM1.0, and BC decreased with altitude and were influenced by the nighttime shallow planetary boundary layer (PBL) where BC was more accumulated and fluctuated. In contrast, O3 was positively correlated with altitude. Backward trajectory clustering and Pasquill stability classification showed that advection and convection significantly influenced the vertical distribution of all pollutants, particularly particulate matter. External air masses carrying high concentrations of pollutants increased PM1.0 and PM2.5 levels by 145% and 455%, respectively, compared to unaffected periods. The ratio of BC to PM2.5 indicated that local emissions had a minor role in nighttime particulate matter. Vertical transport caused by atmospheric instability reduced the differences in pollutant concentrations at various heights. Geodetector and generalized additive model showed that RH and BC accumulation in the PBL were significant factors influencing vertical changes of the secondary aerosol intensity as indicated by the ratio of PM1.0 to PM2.5. The joint explanation of RH and atmospheric stability with other variables such as BC is essential to understand the generation of secondary aerosols. These findings provide insights into regional and local measures to prevent and control night-time particulate matter pollution.

Aqueous-Phase Reactions of Anthropogenic Emissions Lead to the High Chemodiversity of Atmospheric Nitrogen-Containing Compounds during the Haze Event

Nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs), a type of important reactive-nitrogen species, are abundant in organic aerosols in haze events observed in Northern China. However, due to the complex nature of NOCs, the sources, formation, and influencing factors are still ambiguous. Here, the molecular composition of organic matters (OMs) in hourly PM2.5 samples collected during a haze event in Northern China was characterized using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). We found that CHON compounds (formulas containing C, H, O, and N atoms) dominated the OM fractions during the haze and showed high chemodiversity and transformability. Relying on the newly developed revised-workflow and oxidation-hydrolyzation knowledge for CHON compounds, 64% of the major aromatic CHON compounds (>80%) could be derived from the oxidization or hydrolyzation processes. Results from FT-ICR MS data analysis further showed that the aerosol liquid water (ALW)-involved aqueous-phase reactions are important for the molecular distribution of aromatic-CHON compounds besides the coal combustion, and the ALW-involved aromatic-CHON compound formation during daytime and nighttime was different. Our results improve the understanding of molecular composition, sources, and potential formation of CHON compounds, which can help to advance the understanding for the formation, evolution, and control of haze.

Molecular Composition of Anthropogenic Oxygenated Organic Molecules and Their Contribution to Organic Aerosol in a Coastal City

Organic aerosols (OA) have gained attention as a substantial component of atmospheric aerosols owing to their impact on atmospheric visibility, climate, and human health. Although oxygenated organic molecules (OOMs) are essential contributors to OA formation, the sources, transformations, and fates of the OOMs are not fully understood. Herein, anthropogenic OOMs (AOOMs), anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs), and OA were concurrently measured in Xiamen, a coastal city in southeastern China. Our results show that the AOOMs exhibited a high nitrogen content (76%) and a low oxidation degree. Strong photochemical processes of aromatic VOCs were the predominant sources of AOOMs. Also, NOx concentrations and the occurrence of multigeneration OH radical oxidations were the critical factors that might influence the formation of AOOMs. Finally, the newly developed aerosol dynamic model's results show that more than 35% of the OA mass growth rate is attributed to the gas-particle partitioning of AOOMs. Further sensitivity testing demonstrates that the contribution of AOOMs to OA growth is significantly enhanced during high-particulate-concentration periods, especially under low-temperature conditions. This study emphasizes the vital role of photochemically produced AOOMs derived from AVOCs in OA growth in a coastal urban atmosphere.
