Abstract
AIM Elevation of hepatic aminotransferases (aspartate aminotransferase [AST]/alanine aminotransferase [ALT]) is commonly noted among COVID-19 patients. It is unclear if they can predict the clinical outcomes among hospitalized COVID-19 patients. We aim to assess if elevations in AST/ALT were associated with poor outcomes in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. METHODS We retrospectively evaluated hospitalized COVID-19 patients with clinically significant elevated aminotransferases (defined as >2 times upper limit of normal) and compared them with COVID-19 patients without an elevation in aminotransferases. RESULTS The prevalence of elevation in AST/ALT was found to be 13.7% (20/145). The two groups were similar in baseline demographics, comorbidities, and the majority of laboratory tests. There was no difference in the mortality (50% vs. 36.8%, P = 0.32) and median hospital stay (7 days vs. 7 days, P = 0.78). However, there was a statistically significant increase in the rates of mechanical ventilation among elevated aminotransferases group compared with individuals without elevation (50% vs. 24%, P = 0.028). However, this difference was not observed after adjusting for inflammatory markers such as ferritin, lactate dehydrogenase, and lactic acid levels. CONCLUSION Elevated aminotransferases among hospitalized COVID-19 patients is associated with higher rates of mechanical ventilation but did not achieve statistical significance after controlling for inflammatory markers. Also, patients with elevated aminotransferases did not have higher rates of mortality or prolonged length of stay.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Primary hepatic angiosarcoma (PHA) is extremely rare and most patients die within 12 months of diagnosis. The object of the study is to determine the association of initial clinical-radiological features and staging with outcomes in patients with PHA. METHODS The medical records of adult patients with PHA were retrieved from an electronic medical record database and a pathology database and retrospectively reviewed. During 10 years, 22 eligible patients were included. Data extracted focused on the information before the first formal treatment with a pathological proof, including demographic characteristics, medical history, laboratory data, preliminary images, histopathological records, treatment, and follow-up survival period. Two radiologists blindly re-analyzed preliminary images of all 22 patients together and recorded tumor features and imaging stage based on the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) 8th edition tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) Staging System for hepatocellular carcinoma. A radiologist compiled the initial clinical data and preliminary image stage to analyze the association with patients' survival outcome. RESULTS Higher aspartate aminotransferase (AST), higher total bilirubin (TB), lower albumin (ALB), longer prothrombin time (PT) and lower platelet count of serum relative to the normal reference range were more common in patients who survived ≤ 90 days (all P < 0.05). Overall survival was much better in patients with single PHA than in those with other tumor patterns of multiple PHA (all P < 0.05). Overall survival determined by preliminary imaging showed significant differences between stage I and stage III (P = 0.044), stage I and stage IV (P = 0.011), and stage III and IV (P = 0.047). No patients were at stage II. CONCLUSIONS Initial serum levels of ALT, TB, ALB, and PT, platelet count, single mass in liver, and preliminary imaging staging could help predict survival outcomes of patients with PHA.

Abstract
Background: The presence of β-glucans and phenolic compounds in Lentinus edodes suggests this mushroom can be used as a nutritional supplement. Two gestational conditions (before and after fetus implantation) were evaluated, and Lentinus edodes exposure was performed in diabetes mellitus rat model induced by streptozotocin in pre-clinical tests. Methods: On the 20th day of pregnancy, cesarean sections were performed. Blood was collected for biochemical, hematologic parameters and oxidative stress biomarkers. Placenta and amniotic fluid were collected, and fetuses were analyzed through morphological evaluation. Results: The mushroom did not reduce the severe hyperglycemia of the mother-concept but promoted an increase in maternal insulin levels; reduced the levels of alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase, triglyceride and total cholesterol; protected the animals from post-implantation losses. Liver damage induced by streptozotocin was reversed in experimental groups. Conclusions: Lentinus edodes mushroom has antioxidant properties that can minimize the damage caused by gestational diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
AIM Acute liver injury (ALI) has a favorable prognosis, whereas acute liver failure (ALF) leads to organ failure and thus has an unfavorable prognosis. The effect of each etiology on the clinical course of ALI remains unclear. This study aimed to determine how each etiology and glucocorticoid on the unfavorable etiology affects the clinical course of ALI. METHODS This prospective observational study enrolled 522 patients with ALI/ALF from 2004 and 2017. To evaluate the influence of etiology on prognosis, decision tree analysis was carried out using age, disease type, etiology, and the presence of hepatic encephalopathy. RESULTS Of 522 patients, 398 patients satisfied the ALI criteria at registration in this study. The ALI etiologies were as follows: viral hepatitis through oral infection (n = 54), acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (n = 24), acute exacerbation of HBV infection (n = 30), de novo hepatitis due to HBV (n = 5), autoimmune hepatitis (n = 59), drug-induced liver injury (DILI; n = 85), other viruses (n = 12), and undetermined (n = 129). ALI in 46 patients progressed to ALF after registration. Of 11 patients (age >52 years) with ALF due to acute exacerbation of HBV infection or DILI, seven patients (63.6%) died. Whether glucocorticoid affected the clinical course of ALI due to acute exacerbation of HBV infection or DILI was evaluated using propensity score matching (age, sex, alanine aminotransferase, total bilirubin, and prothrombin time-international normalized ratio). Glucocorticoid did not improve the prognosis of ALI patients due to the two etiologies. CONCLUSIONS Progression of ALI due to DILI or acute exacerbation of HBV infection to ALF showed a poor prognosis.

Abstract
Aim To identify the clinical status and immunological profile of a cohort of children with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection to assess the short-term consequences of this infection. Material and methods This prospective case-control study included 30 children in the age range 1–15 years with positive HBsAg attending the Hepatology clinic of Alexandria University Children’s Hospital. Twenty children received lamivudine (3 mg/kg, oral, once a day), and 10 children were lamivudine-resistant and received entecavir treatment (10–11 kg/0.3 mg to > 30 kg/1 mg). They were followed up every 3 months for 1 year. Results The study showed that 97% of the studied cases were discovered accidentally during routine investigations and only 3% presented by acute hepatitis. Ninety percent of them had family member infection with HBV, of which 70% were the mother. Eighty-seven percent of cases had no clinical signs, and only 13% of cases had hepatomegaly. All of the cases were HBsAg positive, 50% were HBeAg positive, 56.7% were HBeAb positive, 33.3% were HBcAb positive, and 100% were HBsAb negative. Conclusions Most of children with HBV infection had associated family member infection and were accidentally discovered. Despite a marked decrease in HBV DNA level after treatment, there was no clearance of HBsAg and no HBsAb seroconversion. Screening for the HBsAb level in children with family members with HBV is recommended.

Abstract
Background Blood counting and the liver function tests, as the routine examinations, can reflect the immune and nutritional status of the body, our aim is to assess the prognostic significance of serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels and AST/ALT in primary hepatic carcinoma. Methods Clinico-pathological data of 414 patients with primary hepatic carcinoma in the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical College between January 2007 to January 2014 was analyzed retrospectively in this study. Survival curves were described by Kaplan-Meier method and compared by Log-rank test, univariate and multivariate analysis were used to identify the prognostic factors. Results GGT was positively correlated with the tumor size(P = 0.000), tumor volume (P = 0.000), tumor volume percent (P = 0.004), TNM stage(P = 0.009), 1-year survival rate (P = 0.000), 3- years survival rate (P = 0.000) and 5-years survival rate(P = 0.000). The serum ALT/AST was significantly correlated with age (P = 0.047), tumor size(P = 0.002), tumor volume (P = 0.010), tumor volume percent (P = 0.005), TNM stage(P = 0.006), liver cirrhosis(P = 0.003), 3- years survival rate (P = 0.032) and 5-years survival rate(P = 0.000). The Kaplan-Meier curves showed that the patients with primary hepatic carcinoma had a longer time in the low GGT group and low AST/ALT group, showing a significant difference (P < 0.05). The univariate and multivariate analyses showed that TNM stage, differentiation grade, tumor volume, GGT and AST/ALT were independent factors for predicting overall survival rate of primary hepatic carcinoma patients. Conclusions GGT and AST/ALT were independent factors for predicting overall survival rate of primary hepatic carcinoma patients.

Abstract
Liver dysfunction is associated with adverse events in infective endocarditis (IE). However, few studies have explored the predictive value of conjugated bilirubin (CB) in IE. We aimed to investigate the nature of the link between CB and adverse prognosis in patients with IE. Consecutive patients with IE between January 2009 and July 2015 were enrolled. Multivariate analysis was performed to confirm whether CB was an independent risk factor for adverse outcomes. In all, 1010 patients were included and divided into two groups according to admission CB level (μmol/L): normal (≤ 7.0, n = 820) and elevated (> 7.0, n = 190) CB groups. In-hospital mortality (5.0% vs. 22.1%, p < 0.001) and major adverse cardiac events (16.8% vs. 36.3%, p < 0.001) were significantly higher in patients with increased CB. A possible J-shaped relationship was found between CB and in-hospital events. Further, CB had more predictive power than total bilirubin in predicting in-hospital death (AUC 0.715 vs. 0.674, p = 0.010). Elevated CB was an independent predictor of in-hospital death (adjusted OR = 2.62, 95%CI 1.40-4.91, p = 0.003). Moreover, CB (increment 1 μmol/L) was independently associated with higher long-term mortality. Kaplan-Meier curves indicated that patients with elevated CB were associated with higher cumulative rate of long-term death (log-rank = 21.47, p < 0.001). CB, a biomarker of liver function, was a relatively powerful predictor of in-hospital and long-term adverse prognosis of IE and could likely comprise a novel risk evaluation strategy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The association of serum liver enzyme levels with all-cause mortality in individuals without hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus infection is inconsistent. We aimed to investigate all-cause and non-liver disease mortality according to levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) stratified by hepatitis virus infection status in a Japanese cohort. METHODS Participants were 7243 men and 13 513 women aged 40-69 years at the baseline survey in 1993-1994. Multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios of death from the baseline health check-up to December 2012 were calculated with a Cox proportional hazards model controlling for potential confounding factors. RESULTS During follow-up, 2235 deaths in men and 1901 deaths in women were identified. All serum liver enzymes were associated with all-cause mortality in each sex and hepatitis virus infection status. In participants without infection, those with more than twice the upper level of normal (ULN), which was defined as 30 IU/L for AST and ALT and 50 IU/L for GGT, had a higher risk of non-liver disease mortality compared to those below the ULN (HR 1.69; 95% confidence interval 1.13-2.53, 1.49; 1.02-2.18, 1.39; 1.11-1.73, 1.72; 1.08-2.74 and 1.72; 1.10-2.69 for AST, ALT, and GGT in men and AST and GGT in women, respectively), except for ALT in women. CONCLUSIONS In participants without hepatitis virus infection, serum liver enzyme levels were positively associated with all-cause mortality. Similar associations were also found for non-liver disease mortality.

Abstract
Liver dysfunction and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are consistently associated. However, it is currently unknown whether liver dysfunction contributes to, results from, or is merely correlated with T2D due to confounding. We used Mendelian randomization to investigate the presence and direction of any causal relation between liver function and T2D risk including up to 64,094 T2D case and 607,012 control subjects. Several biomarkers were used as proxies of liver function (i.e., alanine aminotransferase [ALT], aspartate aminotransferase [AST], alkaline phosphatase [ALP], and γ-glutamyl transferase [GGT]). Genetic variants strongly associated with each liver function marker were used to investigate the effect of liver function on T2D risk. In addition, genetic variants strongly associated with T2D risk and with fasting insulin were used to investigate the effect of predisposition to T2D and insulin resistance, respectively, on liver function. Genetically predicted higher circulating ALT and AST were related to increased risk of T2D. There was a modest negative association of genetically predicted ALP with T2D risk and no evidence of association between GGT and T2D risk. Genetic predisposition to higher fasting insulin, but not to T2D, was related to increased circulating ALT. Since circulating ALT and AST are markers of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), these findings provide some support for insulin resistance resulting in NAFLD, which in turn increases T2D risk.

Abstract
The current study investigated the renoprotective effects of stevia, angiotensin-II type 1 receptor (AT1) blocker and calcium (Ca2+) channel blocker in gentamycin-induced nephrotoxicity in rat models. Six groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats of eight weeks old were taken for the experiment: sham control, nephrotoxicity, treatment with amlodipine (4 mg/kg/day); stevia (200 mg/kg/day); losartan (15 mg/kg/day) and valsartan (5 mg/kg/day), accordingly. The blood sample was taken for the assessment of renal and hepatic-functional variables like serum creatinine, blood urea, BUN and SGPT, SGOT, and total serum bilirubin. Hematological parameters were also examined. Histological examination has been done on kidneys and liver. Alterations of the body weight and the organ's weight were documented. Treatment with stevia and valsartan significantly decreased serum creatinine levels. A reduction of liver enzymes, and total serum bilirubin levels were observed in all the treatment groups. Treatment with valsartan and amlodipine, remarkably and stevia, mildly reduced the renal tissue damage, inflammation, and tubular necrosis. However, the present study demonstrated that losartan treatment aggravated kidney damage by increasing protein cast, calcification, tubular necrosis, and injury. This comparison indicated that both stevia and valsartan have beneficial renoprotective effect and valsartan offers a better treatment option in renal damage over losartan.

Abstract
HCC has been reported to be immensely occurring carcinoma worldwide. Recent days the mortality occurred due to liver cancer has also been found to be increased at an alarming speed affecting mostly the young patients. The aim of the current study was to decipher the role of calcium and vitamin K3 in the treatment of chemically induced hepatocarcinogenesis in the male Wistar rats. Liver cancer was induced via a subnecrogenic dose of 160 mg/kg body weight, diethylnitrosamine (DENA) when associated with fasting/refeeding in male Wistar rats. It elevated the serum glutamate oxaloacetate (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), bilirubin, total cholesterol (CH), triglycerides (TG), alfa-fetoprotein (AFP) and reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Histopathological examination of liver tissue showed marked carcinogenicity of the chemical carcinogen. Food, water intake and animal weights were also assessed, respectively. The animals exposed to DENA showed a significant decrease in the body weight. The elevated levels of serum SGOT, SGPT, ALP, AFP, TC and TG were restored by administration of calcium and Vit K (ad libitum) combination at higher dose than the normal dietary requirement (3 mg/kg) daily for 12 weeks p.o. Physiological and biochemical analysis showed the beneficial effects of calcium and vitamin K3 combination in the animals exposed to DENA. The results deciphered the beneficial effects of calcium and vitamin K3 in combination.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the associations of the levels of liver enzymes, such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT), at baseline and their changes over time with mortality. DESIGN Cohort study. SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND OUTCOME MEASURES We analysed the data of 484 472 individuals from the National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort (2002-2013). We used two exposure indices: (1) deciles of baseline ALT, AST and GGT levels measured in 2002 or 2003 and (2) deciles of changes in ALT, AST and GGT levels over a 4 year period (2002-2006 or 2003-2007). We constructed Cox models to evaluate the associations of these exposure indices with mortality (2008-2013). RESULTS We found non-monotonic dose-response associations between the baseline levels of ALT and AST and all-cause mortality. We also found a monotonic non-linear association between the baseline levels of GGT and all-cause mortality (10th decile: HR=2.05, 95% CI: 1.93 to 2.18). Compared with the ninth, sixth and fourth deciles of changes in ALT (8-13 U/L), AST (1 U/L) and GGT (-3 to -2 U/L) over time, respectively, the risks of all-cause mortality increased in both the higher and lower deciles of changes in the corresponding liver enzyme levels (10th decile: HR=1.36, 95% CI 1.24 to 1.48; 1st decile: HR=1.46, 95% CI 1.34 to 1.59 for ALT; 10th decile: 1.55, 95% CI 1.40 to 1.71; 1st decile: HR=1.53, 95% CI 1.38 to 1.69 for AST; 10th decile: HR=1.71, 95% CI 1.56 to 1.88; 1st decile: HR=1.67, 95% CI 1.52 to 1.84 for GGT). These non-monotonic dose-response associations remained when analyses were stratified by the medians or quartiles of the baseline liver enzyme levels. CONCLUSIONS The levels of liver enzymes at baseline and over time showed non-linear associations with mortality.

Abstract
Idiosyncratic (unpredictable) drug-induced liver injury is one of the most challenging liver disorders faced by hepatologists, because of the myriad of drugs used in clinical practice, available herbs and dietary supplements with hepatotoxic potential, the ability of the condition to present with a variety of clinical and pathological phenotypes and the current absence of specific biomarkers. This makes the diagnosis of drug-induced liver injury an uncertain process, requiring a high degree of awareness of the condition and the careful exclusion of alternative aetiologies of liver disease. Idiosyncratic hepatotoxicity can be severe, leading to a particularly serious variety of acute liver failure for which no effective therapy has yet been developed. These Clinical Practice Guidelines summarize the available evidence on risk factors, diagnosis, management and risk minimization strategies for drug-induced liver jury.

Chronic exposures to toxic trace metals have hazardous effects on human health, especially exposure to lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd). Blood Pb and Cd reflect toxicity on human health. A total of 267 hospitalized patients, of which 158 were from Guiyu (exposed group) in China, and 109 from Jinping (reference group), were recruited in this study. Blood Pb and Cd were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Blood Pb and Cd levels from the exposed group were both higher than in the reference group. Blood Pb levels are positively associated with blood Cd levels from the two groups. Blood Pb and Cd levels are associated with elevated hematological and hepatic parameters in patients from the exposed and reference groups. The results suggest toxic trace metals may increase liver metabolic burden, inducing abnormal liver function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver stiffness in Mexican subjects with different body mass index (BMI). METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in 505 adults. Risk for NASH was defined as the presence of one or more of the following biochemical and metabolic parameters (BMPs): fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dl, triglycerides (TG) ≥150 mg/dl, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) ≥2.5, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) >54 IU/L and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) >42 IU/L. Body mass index measurement and nutritional assessment were performed by standard procedures. Liver fibrosis stage was determined by liver stiffness measurement using transitional elastography (TE) or by liver biopsy (LB). RESULTS Risk for NASH was 57% (290/505). Most BMPs values incremented by BMI category. Among 171 at-risk patients, 106 subjects were evaluated by TE and 65 subjects by LB. Abnormal liver stiffness (≥6.0 kPa) was prevalent in 54% (57/106) of the cases, whereas by LB, 91% (59/65) of patients with obesity had NASH and liver fibrosis. Furthermore, liver fibrosis was prevalent in 46% (6/13) in normal weight individuals, whereas 4.6% (3/65) of patients with a BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 showed no histopathological abnormalities. Overall, 67.8% (116/171) of the patients had abnormal liver stiffness or NASH. The normal weight patients with liver damage consumed relatively a higher fat-rich diet compared to the other groups whereas the remaining subgroups shared a similar dietary pattern. CONCLUSION Young patients with overweight and obesity showed a high prevalence of altered BMPs related to abnormal liver stiffness assessed by TE and NASH by LB. Early diagnostic strategies are required to detect the risk for NASH and avoid further liver damage in populations with a rising prevalence of obesity by defining the risk factors involved in the onset and progression of NASH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Diabetes mellitus is a chronic, lifelong condition that affects our body physiology. Untreated diabetes mellitus causes diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy, auto immune diseases, polyuria, polydipsia, loss of weight, and cardiovascular diseases. The use of medications for the treatment of diabetes mellitus causes adverse effects with long-term use, and sometimes leads to death. Today, researchers are working on the discovery of new anti-diabetes drugs from plants with low or no adverse effects. From this point of view, the present work was conducted to evaluate the anti-diabetic activity of Zornia gibbosa Span. MATERIALS AND METHODS This acute toxicity study was conducted for ethyl acetate and ethanol (70%v/v) extracts of Z. gibbosa as per OECD guidelines. The anti-diabetic activity of selected plant extracts were tested using alloxan-induced diabetes in a rat model. RESULTS No mortality was observed in the administered doses of Zornia gibbosa Span extracts. The tested extracts significantly (p≤0.01) restored the physiologic changes that occurred due to the alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus. The hydroalcoholic extracts at 500 mg/kg body weight concentration showed more activity compared with other extracts at different concentrations along with standard drug (glibenclamide). Zornia gibbosa significantly decreased glucose concentrations and restored the altered enzymes levels caused by damage to different organs by diabetes. CONCLUSION The results of the present study indicate that Z. gibbosa has a significant anti-diabetic activity. Therefore, it may be capable of use as an alternate medicine along with allopathic medicine in the treatment of diabetes as well as its health problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The age- and sex-specific reference intervals (RIs) for liver chemistry in children are not available in China. Our study aimed to establish age and gender related RIs for ALT, AST, AKP, and GGT in China, and apply the new RI for ALT in children with chronic hepatitis B to use as a biochemical marker for disease progression. METHODS Data were collected from the Children's Healthcare Center. The measurements of ALT, AST, AKP and GGT were performed on a Hitachi 7600 Chemistry Analyzer. Age- and sex-specific RIs were determined using a percentile (3rd-97th) method. The sensitivity and specificity were determined to test the ability of the newly proposed ALT thresholds to classify children with chronic HBV infection. RESULTS The age- and sex-specific RIs of ALT, AST, AKP and GGT were established based on 4232 Chinese healthy children. Using the new median ALT threshold, the sensitivity was higher. The detection of chronic HBV infection was 31.2% in boys and 35.5% in girls, while a very slight decrease in specificity was found. Based on the newly proposed RIs of ALT, approximately 16.1% boys and 19.0% girls would be classified in the HBeAg-positive chronic hepatitis phase, but using the current ALT threshold of children's hospitals they were in HBeAg-positive chronic infection phase. CONCLUSIONS Based on a large healthy population, we established the sex- and age-specific RIs of ALT, AST, AKP and GGT serum activities for Chinese children. Meanwhile, newly proposed liver chemistry RIs will benefit the understanding of liver function and the natural history of chronic HBV infection in children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Total bilirubin is beneficial for protecting cardiovascular diseases in adults. The authors aimed to investigate the association of total bilirubin, red blood cell, and hemoglobin levels with the prevalence of high blood pressure in children and adolescents. METHODS A total of 3776 students (aged from 6 to 16 years old) were examined using cluster sampling. Pre-high blood pressure and high blood pressure were respectively defined as the point of 90th and 95th percentiles based on the Fourth Report on the Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were standardized into z-scores. RESULTS Peripheral total bilirubin, red blood cell and hemoglobin levels were significantly correlated with age, and also varied with gender. Peripheral total bilirubin was negatively correlated with systolic blood pressure in 6- and 9-year-old boys, whilst positively correlated with diastolic blood pressure in the 12-year-old boys and 13- to 15-year-old girls (p<0.05). Higher levels of red blood cell and hemoglobin were observed in pre-high blood pressure and high blood pressure students when compared with their normotensive peers (p<0.01). The increases in red blood cell and hemoglobin were significantly associated with high blood pressure after adjusting for confounding factors. The ORs (95% CI) of each of the increases were 2.44 (1.52-3.92) and 1.04 (1.03-1.06), respectively. No statistical association between total bilirubin and high blood pressure was observed (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Total bilirubin could be weakly correlated with both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, as correlations varied with age and gender in children and adolescents; in turn, the increased levels of red blood cell and hemoglobin are proposed to be positively associated with the prevalence of high blood pressure.

Abstract
The oxidation-reduction (redox)-responsive micelle system is based on a diselenide-containing triblock copolymer, poly(ε-caprolactone)-bis(diselenide-methoxy poly(ethylene glycol)/poly(ethylene glycol)-folate) [PCL-(SeSe-mPEG/PEG-FA)2]. This has helped in the development of tumor-targeted delivery for hydrophobic anticancer drugs. The diselenide bond, as a redox-sensitive linkage, was designed in such a manner that it is located at the hydrophilic-hydrophobic hinge to allow complete collapse of the micelle and thus efficient drug release in redox environments. The amphiphilic block copolymers self-assembled into micelles at concentrations higher than the critical micelle concentration (CMC) in an aqueous environment. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses showed that the micelles were spherical with an average diameter of 120 nm. The insoluble anticancer drug paclitaxel (PTX) was loaded into micelles, and its triggered release behavior under different redox conditions was verified. Folate-targeting micelles showed an enhanced uptake in 4T1 breast cancer cells and in vitro cytotoxicity by flow cytometry and (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium) (MTS) assay, respectively. Delayed tumor growth was confirmed in the subcutaneously implanted 4T1 breast cancer in mice after intraperitoneal injection. The proposed redox-responsive copolymer offers a new type of biomaterial for drug delivery into cancer cells in vivo. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE On-demand drug actuation is highly desired. Redox-responsive polymeric DDSs have been shown to be able to respond and release their cargo in a selective manner when encountering a significant change in the potential difference, such as that present between cancerous and healthy tissues. This study offers an added advantage to the field of redox-responsive polymers by reporting a new type of shell-sheddable micelle based on an amphiphilic triblock co-polymer, containing diselenide as a redox-sensitive linkage. The linkage was smartly located at the hydrophilic-hydrophilic bridge in the co-polymer offering complete collapse of the micelle when exposed to the right trigger. The system was able to delay tumor growth and reduce toxicity in a breast cancer tumor model following intraperitoneal injection in mice.

Abstract
Liver disease in children can present in many ways from the frequently encountered prolonged neonatal jaundice to the comparatively rare acute liver failure. In this article, we will discuss 'red flags' of liver disease, the initial investigations required and when to refer to a specialist liver centre. Across all presentations, the degree of elevation of alanine aminotransferase or aspartate aminotransferase provides only little diagnostic information. Abstract
Drug induced liver injury (DILI) is the prime cause of liver disfunction which may lead to mild non-specific symptoms to more severe signs like hepatitis, cholestasis, cirrhosis and jaundice. Not only the prescription medications, but the consumption of herbs and health supplements have also been reported to cause these adverse reactions resulting into high mortality rates and post marketing withdrawal of drugs. Due to the continuously increasing DILI incidences in recent years, robust prediction methods with high accuracy, specificity and sensitivity are of priority. Bioinformatics is the emerging field of science that has been used in the past few years to explore the mechanisms of DILI. The major emphasis of this review is the recent advances of in silico tools for the diagnostic and therapeutic interventions of DILI. These tools have been developed and widely used in the past few years for the prediction of pathways induced from both hepatotoxic as well as hepatoprotective Chinese drugs and for the identification of DILI specific biomarkers for prognostic purpose. In addition to this, advanced machine learning models have been developed for the classification of drugs into DILI causing and non-DILI causing. Moreover, development of 3 class models over 2 class offers better understanding of multi-class DILI risks and at the same time providing authentic prediction of toxicity during drug designing before clinical trials.

Abstract
We have achieved significant enhancement of gene delivery into livers of large animals using ultrasound (US)-targeted microbubble (MB) destruction methods. An infusion of pGL4 (encoding a luciferase reporter gene) plasmid DNA (pDNA) and MBs into a portal-vein segmental branch of a porcine liver was exposed to US for 4 min. Therapeutic US induced cavitation of MBs to temporarily permeabilize the vascular endothelium and cell membranes, allowing entry of pDNA. We obtained a 64-fold enhancement in luciferase expression in pig livers compared to control without US using an unfocused, dual-element transducer (H105, center frequency [fc] = 1.10 MHz) at 2.7 MPa peak negative pressure (PNP). However, input electrical energy was limited, and modified transducers were designed to have spherical (H185A, fc = 1.10 MHz) or cylindrical foci (H185B, fc = 1.10 MHz; H185D, fc = 1.05 MHz) to enhance PNP output. The revised transducers required less electrical input to achieve 2.7 MPa PNP compared to H105, thereby allowing PNP outputs of up to 6.2 MPa without surpassing the piezo-material limitations. Subsequently, luciferase expression significantly improved up to 9,000-fold compared to controls with minor liver damage. These advancements will allow us to modify our current protocols toward minimally invasive US gene therapy.

Abstract
The prevalence of obesity-associated nonalcoholic fatty liver disease has significantly increased over the past decade, and end-stage liver disease secondary to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis has become 1 of the most common indications for liver transplantation. This both increases the demand for organs and decreases the availability of donor livers deemed suitable for transplantation. Although in the past many steatotic livers were discarded due to concerns over enhanced susceptibility to ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) and organ failure, the discrepancy between supply and demand has resulted in increasing use of expanded criteria donor organs including steatotic livers. However, it remains controversial whether steatotic livers can be safely used for transplantation and how best to improve the performance of steatotic grafts. We aimed to evaluate the impact of diet-induced hepatic steatosis in a murine model of IRI. Using a diet of high trans-fat, fructose, and cholesterol (HTF-C) and a diet high in saturated fats, sucrose, and cholesterol (Western diet), we were able to establish models of mixed macrovesicular and microvesicular steatosis (HTF-C) and microvesicular steatosis (Western). We found that the presence of hepatic steatosis, whether it is predominantly macrovesicular or microvesicular, significantly worsens IRI as measured by plasma alanine aminotransferase levels and inflammatory cytokine concentration, and histological evaluation for necrosis. Additionally, we report on a novel finding in which hepatic IRI in the setting of steatosis results in the induction of the necroptosis factors, receptor interacting protein kinase (RIPK) 3, RIPK1, and mixed-lineage kinase domain-like. These data lay the groundwork for additional experimentation to test potential therapeutic approaches to limit IRI in steatotic livers by using a genetically tractable system. Abstract
Inspired by the well-documented tumor protecting ability of paullones, recently, we synthesized novel paullone-like scaffolds, indole-fused benzo-oxazepines (IFBOs), and screened them against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) specific Hep-G2 cells. Three of the synthesized compounds significantly attenuated the progression of HCC in vitro. By computational studies, we further discovered that IFBOs exhibited a stable binding complex with the IL-6 receptor. In this context, we investigated in vivo study using the nitrosodiethyl amine (NDEA)-induced HCC model, which strengthened our previous findings by showing the blockade of the IL-6 mediated JAK2/STAT3 oncogenic signaling pathway. Treatment with IFBOs showed remarkable attenuation of cellular proliferation, as evidenced through a decrease in the number of nodules, restoration of body weight, oxidative stress parameters, liver marker enzymes and histological architecture. Interestingly, using a metabolomic approach we further discovered that IFBOs can restore the perturbed metabolic profile associated with the HCC condition to normalcy. Particularly, the efficacy of compound 6a for an anti-HCC response was significantly better than the marketed chemotherapeutic drug, 5-fluorouracil. Altogether, these remarkable findings open up possibilities of developing IFBOs as novel future candidate molecules for plausible alternatives for HCC treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-HDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol (non-HDL-c/HDL-c) ratio is a feasible predictor for coronary heart disease, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance. Patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular problems and type 2 diabetes. However, the predictive role of non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio in NASH hasn't been investigated yet. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study. A total of 3489 eligible subjects were selected in the present study. Prevalence and characteristics of NASH were demonstrated. Conditional logistic regression was used to analyze the association between non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio and risks of NASH. Associations between non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio and serum aminotransferase levels were also investigated. RESULTS The overall prevalence of NASH was 6.13%, higher in male (6.89%) than that in female (5.04%). Interestingly, the prevalence of NASH showed a positive correlation with the elevation of non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio (Pearson's Chi-squared test, linear trend 0.010, p < 0.05). The risk of NASH increased approximately 1.8-fold among subjects with higher non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio. After adjustment for confounding factors, higher non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio was still associated with a 54.4% increased risk of NASH. Male had higher risk of NASH than female when their non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio increased. The risk of NASH in subjects with BMI more than 24 was 3 times higher than that in subjects with BMI less than 24. Every one unit increase in Non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio was associated with 64.5% increase in ALT/AST level (p < 0.05) after adjustment for confounding factors. CONCLUSIONS Our study provided strong evidence that subjects with higher non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio had a higher risk of NASH, which suggested that non-HDL-c/HDL-c ratio might be a feasible predictor for NASH.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to investigate the interplay between autophagy and apoptosis and to investigate the association between both of autophagy and apoptosis and vitamin D and its receptor in hepatitis C virus (HCV) viral infection and its implication in the progression into hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).A cross-sectional study where serum levels of microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B-light chain 3 (LC3); marker of autophagy, caspase-3; marker of apoptosis, vitamin D3 and vitamin D receptor (VDR) were measured in healthy subjects as well as HCV and HCV-HCC patients using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique.Collectively, the liver profile revealed hepatic dysfunctions in HCV patients with or without HCC. A significant reduction in the serum concentration levels LC3 and caspase-3 were observed referring to the down regulation of autophagy and host-mediated apoptosis in HCV patients with or without HCC. Deficiency of vitamin D and decreased levels of its receptor were observed in HCV and HCV-HCC patients.The perturbation in vitamin D/VDR axis, which modulates both of autophagy and apoptosis in HCV infection, may point out to its involvement and implication in the pathogenesis of HCV infection and the development of HCV-related HCC. Therefore, supplementation with vitamin D may not be the only solution to restore the vital biological functions of vitamin D but VDR-targeted therapy may be of great importance in this respect.

Abstract
PURPOSE The application of betulinic acid (B), a potent antineoplastic agent, is limited due to poor bioavailability, short plasma half-life and inappropriate tissue distribution. Thus, we aimed to prepare novel 50:50 poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)-loaded B nanoparticles (BNP) and to compare its anti-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) activity with parent B. METHODS BNP were synthesized and characterized using different methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry and particle size analyses. Particle size of BNP was optimized through the application of the stabilizer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The anti-HCC response was evaluated through in vitro cell line study using Hep-G2 cells, confocal microscopy, in vivo oral pharmacokinetics and animal studies. Further, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis was conducted to observe the changes in the expression of specific genes. RESULTS Particle size of BNP was optimized through the application of the stabilizer, polyvinyl alcohol. Physicochemical characterization exhibited particle size of 257.1 nm with zeta potential -0.170 mV (optimized batch B, BNP). SEM and FTIR analyses of BNP showed that cylindrical particles of B converted to spherical particles in BNP and there were no interaction between B and used polymers. The release study of optimized BNP was highest (≥80%) than any other formulation. Later, in vitro cell culture analysis using Hep-G2 cells and confocal microscopy studies revealed that BNP had the highest inhibition and penetration properties than parent B. Oral pharmacokinetics studies using albino Wistar rats at single 100 mg dose again exhibited BNP had the higher 50% of plasma concentration (t1/2), a higher maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) and took longer to reach the maximum plasma concentration (Tmax) than parent B. Next, our in vivo study using nitrosodiethyl amine (NDEA)-induced HCC model documented BNP decreased in number of nodules, restored body weight, oxidative stress parameters, liver marker enzymes and histological architecture than parent B. Lastly, qRT-PCR studies further demonstrated that anti-HCC properties of BNP may be due to over expression of antiapoptotic caspases i.e., caspase 3 and 8. CONCLUSION The prepared BNP showed a better therapeutic response against HCC and could be attributed as future candidate molecule for HCC treatment.

Abstract
These updated guidelines on the management of abnormal liver blood tests have been commissioned by the Clinical Services and Standards Committee (CSSC) of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) under the auspices of the liver section of the BSG. The original guidelines, which this document supersedes, were written in 2000 and have undergone extensive revision by members of the Guidelines Development Group (GDG). The GDG comprises representatives from patient/carer groups (British Liver Trust, Liver4life, PBC Foundation and PSC Support), elected members of the BSG liver section (including representatives from Scotland and Wales), British Association for the Study of the Liver (BASL), Specialist Advisory Committee in Clinical Biochemistry/Royal College of Pathology and Association for Clinical Biochemistry, British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN), Public Health England (implementation and screening), Royal College of General Practice, British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiologists (BSGAR) and Society of Acute Medicine. The quality of evidence and grading of recommendations was appraised using the AGREE II tool. These guidelines deal specifically with the management of abnormal liver blood tests in children and adults in both primary and secondary care under the following subheadings: (1) What constitutes an abnormal liver blood test? (2) What constitutes a standard liver blood test panel? (3) When should liver blood tests be checked? (4) Does the extent and duration of abnormal liver blood tests determine subsequent investigation? (5) Response to abnormal liver blood tests. They are not designed to deal with the management of the underlying liver disease.

Abstract
Elevated liver enzymes are a common scenario encountered by physicians in clinical practice. For many physicians, however, evaluation of such a problem in patients presenting with no symptoms can be challenging. Evidence supporting a standardized approach to evaluation is lacking. Although alterations of liver enzymes could be a normal physiological phenomenon in certain cases, it may also reflect potential liver injury in others, necessitating its further assessment and management. In this article, we provide a guide to primary care clinicians to interpret abnormal elevation of liver enzymes in asymptomatic patients using a step-wise algorithm. Adopting a schematic approach that classifies enzyme alterations on the basis of pattern (hepatocellular, cholestatic and isolated hyperbilirubinemia), we review an approach to abnormal alteration of liver enzymes within each section, the most common causes of enzyme alteration, and suggest initial investigations.

Abstract
Metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic syndromes (MetS) have been recognized as the important risk factors for asymptomatic intracranial vertebrobasilar stenosis (IVBS). Although fatty liver index (FLI) is significantly related with these diseases, the association between FLI and IVBS remains unclear. In the present study, 2368 participants (30–75 years) were recruited from a Chinese prospective cohort study of PMMJS. Amongst them, 2281 individuals who did not have IVBS at baseline were enrolled in the 6-year following-up study. In cross-sectional analysis based on the baseline characteristics, the results showed that FLI was positively related with IVBS prevalence. Compared to the participants with FLI < 30, the adjusted OR (95% CI) of IVBS was 2.07 (1.18, 3.62) and 2.85 (1.39, 5.18) in the groups of 30 ≤ FLI < 60 and FLI ≥ 60, respectively. In longitudinal analysis, the results showed that the participants with FLI ≥ 60 had an increased risk of asymptomatic IVBS compared to those with FLI < 30 [adjusted HR (95%CI): 1.65 (1.05, 2.60)]. Moreover, exclusion of persons with hypertension, T2DM and MetS did not alter the associations between FLI and asymptomatic IVBS. Therefore, our results suggest that elevated FLI is an independent risk factor for asymptomatic IVBS in Chinese adults.

Abstract
Fatty liver disease (FLD) increases the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and steatohepatitis, which leads to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Thus, the early detection of FLD is necessary. We aimed to find a quantitative and feasible model for discriminating the FLD, based on plasma free amino acid (PFAA) profiles. We constructed models of the relationship between PFAA levels in 2,000 generally healthy Japanese subjects and the diagnosis of FLD by abdominal ultrasound scan by multiple logistic regression analysis with variable selection. The performance of these models for FLD discrimination was validated using an independent data set of 2,160 subjects. The generated PFAA-based model was able to identify FLD patients. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the model was 0.83, which was higher than those of other existing liver function-associated markers ranging from 0.53 to 0.80. The value of the linear discriminant in the model yielded the adjusted odds ratio (with 95% confidence intervals) for a 1 standard deviation increase of 2.63 (2.14–3.25) in the multiple logistic regression analysis with known liver function-associated covariates. Interestingly, the linear discriminant values were significantly associated with the progression of FLD, and patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis also exhibited higher values.

Abstract
Two scaffolds of chitosan/sodium alginate/hydroxyapatite (Ch/NaAlg/Hap) 1:1:0.2 and 1:1:0.6 were evaluated in the prevention of bisphosphonate-induced jaw osteonecrosis. Two groups of rats (n = 24, according to the euthanasia time: 15 or 30 days after the last Zoledronic acid (ZA) administration) were subdivided in four subgroups (n = 6): I - Control (saline + teeth extraction); II - ZA 0.6 mg/kg + teeth extraction; III - ZA + teeth extraction + scaffold 1:1:0.2; IV - ZA + teeth extraction + scaffold 1:1:0.6. Jaws were evaluated histologically and blood was evaluated for hematological and biochemical parameters. Histopathology showed significant osteonecrosis in AZ group. The scaffold's implantation, despite the inflammatory process, were able to prevent the osteonecrosis. In the 15-day euthanasia group, an increase in red blood cells and platelets was observed in the subgroup II. Hemoglobin and hematocrit decreased in subgroup IV compared to II. Hepatic transaminases and creatinine concentration increased significantly in subgroup II. Calcium concentration increased in subgroup IV compared to II. In the 30-day euthanasia group, no differences among the groups were observed for any parameter. Scaffolds proved to be efficient and safe to liver and kidney function. Some hematological parameters were altered by the scaffold, but returned to normal concentrations over time. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Severe Elevation of Liver Tests in Choledocholithiasis: An Uncommon Occurrence With Important Clinical Implications. J Clin Gastroenterol 2017; 51:728-733. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Choledocholithiasis is not commonly associated with dramatic elevations in aminotransferase or total serum bilirubin. Ours is the largest case series thus far studying the prevalence of dramatic elevations in liver tests associated with choledocholithiasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients with choledocholithiasis diagnosed on endoscopic retrograde pancreatocholangiogram at a tertiary referral hospital over 7 years. We identified 740 patients with available liver tests and determined the prevalence of aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) >1000 IU/L and of total serum bilirubin >10 mg/dL. We compared clinical characteristics of these 2 nonoverlapping groups. RESULTS Of 740 patients, AST and/or ALT values >1000 IU/L were present in 45 (6.1%) patients. On average AST and ALT decreased 79% and 56%, respectively, at discharge 1 to 8 days later. Total serum bilirubin levels >10 mg/dL were present in 35 (4.7%) patients and decreased by an average of 64% at discharge 1 to 8 days later. When compared with the group with total serum bilirubin >10 mg/dL, the group with elevated aminotransferases had significantly more females (93% vs. 43%, P<0.001), had smaller common bile duct diameter (8.5 vs. 10.6 mm, P=0.04), and were more likely to have had a prior cholecystectomy (40% vs. 14%, P=0.01). These 80 patients had higher utilization of health resources: half had additional laboratory studies and one fourth had additional imaging studies performed. CONCLUSIONS In patients with high AST and/or ALT and serum total bilirubin levels with known choledocholithiasis, elaborate work up to look for another etiology is not required. As long as the values decrease significantly, they do not need to be followed until they normalize in the same hospitalization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The levels of liver function tests (LFTs) are often used to assess liver injury and non-liver disease-related mortality. In our study, the relationship between pretreatment serum LFTs and overall survival (OS) was evaluated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. METHODS Our purpose was to investigate the prognostic value of the preoperative alanine aminotransferase/aspartate aminotransferase (ALT/AST) ratio and gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) in ESCC patients. A retrospective study was performed in 447 patients with ESCC, and follow-up period was at least 60 months until death. The prognostic significance of serum LFTs were determined by univariate and multivariate Cox hazard models. RESULTS LFTs including ALT, AST, LSR, GGT, TBA and LDH were analyzed. Serum LSR (HR: 0.592, 95% CI = 0.457-0.768, p < 0.001 and GGT (HR: 1.507, 95% CI = 1.163-1.953, p = 0.002) levels were indicated as significant predictors of OS. The 5-year OS among patients with higher LSR levels was longer compared with those patients with decreased LSR levels, not only in the whole cohort but also in the subgroups stratified by pathological stage (T1-T2 subgroup, T3-T4 subgroup, N0 subgroup and M0 subgroup). We also found that patients with a higher GGT might predict worse OS than patients with a normal GGT, not only in the whole cohort but also in the subgroups stratified by pathological stage (T3-T4 subgroup and N1-N2 subgroup). CONCLUSIONS Both increased levels of LSR and decreased levels of GGT might predict shorter overall survival in ESCC patients. Our findings suggest that serum LSR and GGT levels could be used as a key predictor of survival in patients with ESCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To estimate the range of hepatic involvement in dengue infections by assessing clinical and biochemical profile of adult dengue infected patients. METHODS Serologically confirmed 220 adult cases of dengue infections admitted to Mayo hospital from June 2013 to November 2013 were classified as having dengue fever, dengue haemorragic fever and dengue shock syndrome. The frequency and range of bilirubin, liver enzymes derangement and presence of liver enlargement in each group was calculated and further stratified according to age and gender. Patients with positive viral serology, chronic liver disease, malaria and typhoid were excluded from the study. RESULTS About 60% of DHF patients had hepatomegaly compared to 40% of DF patients. Liver dysfunction was more common in DF compared to DHF (38.15 vs 18.6%). Hyperbilirubinemia was noted in 40 (18.2%) patients, 28 (12.7%) in DF and 12(5.5%) in DHF. The mean serum bilirubin was higher in DHF [0.87+0.33] compared to DF [0.74+0.27]. Bilirubin was higher in male patients and in younger (<20 years) age group. ALT was elevated more frequently in male patients in age group of 31-40 years and in DF patients as compared to DHF [72(32.7% vs 40(18.2%)]. The mean serum ALT level was 103.7 U/l in DHF and 69.2U/l in DF. AST was raised in all DHF patients as compared to DF in which 40% patients had normal AST levels. Alkaline Phosphate was high in all DHF patients with a mean of 278.7. It was raised in most of the DF patients as well and majority of patients were in age group of 31-40 years. CONCLUSION Liver involvement is very common in dengue infections and is not limited to elevation of transaminases only. Bilirubin and Alkaline phosphatase are also raised in considerable number of patients. Therefore in adults with fever, jaundice, hepatomegaly and altered liver function tests, the diagnosis of dengue infection should be strongly considered in areas where dengue infection is endemic. Abstract
Background Jinqing granules which are made of a mixture extract that contains Radix Tinosporae and Canarii fructus in proportions according to a longstanding formula have a good effect on the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcer disease. It has not been through safety through systematic toxicological studies, however. To provide basis for clinical application, we performed safety pharmacology and subchronic toxicity experiments in specific pathogen-free Sprague-Dawley rats. Results In safety pharmacology experiments, Jinqing granules had no evident adverse effects on the central nervous, cardiovascular, or respiratory systems. In subchronic toxicity study, 2–8 g/kg of Jinqing granules induced no evident adverse effects on Clinical signs, body weight changes, food and water intake, death daily, indicators of urine, hematological assay, serum biochemistry, organ coefficient and histopathological examination. However, the 16 g/kg dose was associated with slightly slowed weight growth, decreased number of sperm in seminiferous tubules and increased values of serum aspartate aminotransferase and bilirubin. During the 30-day feeding test, 3 rats that received the 16 g/kg dose died, but the deaths were most likely due to trauma of oral gavage, not to drug toxicity. Conclusion Jinqing granules given to Sprague-Dawley rats orally for 30 days at a dose of 8 g/kg or less appears safe, but higher doses were not proven safe. The significance of these observations with respect to animal usage of Jinqing granules deserves thorough investigation.
