The general psychopathology factor (p) from adolescence to adulthood: Exploring the developmental trajectories of p using a multi-method approach

Considerable attention has been directed towards studying co-occurring psychopathology through the lens of a general factor (p-factor). However, the developmental trajectory and stability of the p-factor have yet to be fully understood. The present study examined the explanatory power of dynamic mutualism theory - an alternative framework that suggests the p-factor is a product of lower-level symptom interactions that strengthen throughout development. Data were drawn from a population-based sample of girls (N = 2450) who reported on the severity of internalizing and externalizing problems each year from age 14 to age 21. Predictions of dynamic mutualism were tested using three distinct complementary statistical approaches including: longitudinal bifactor models, random-intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs), and network models. Across methods, study results document preliminary support for mutualistic processes in the development of co-occurring psychopathology (that is captured in p). Findings emphasize the importance of exploring alternative frameworks and methods for better understanding the p-factor and its development.

Developing the health state classification system for a condition-specific preference-based measure for patients with myasthenia gravis

PURPOSE

This study aimed to generate the health state classification system (HCS) of a condition-specific preference-based measure to capture the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) from the 15-item Myasthenia Gravis Quality of Life Scale (MG-QoL15r).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An HCS was derived from the MG-QoL15r in a large sample of 1739 patients with MG based on psychometric analysis, including factor analysis, item response theory analysis, and discussions with experts. Reliability, construct and convergent validity, and item fit of the HCS were further assessed using another sample.

RESULTS

The HCS has six dimensions: social activity, hobbies and fun activities, meeting family needs, work performance, mobility, and emotion, and it demonstrates good internal consistency reliability. The unidimensionality of the HCS was confirmed using confirmatory factor analysis. Satisfied convergent validity was supported by a significant association with the 12-item Short Form Survey (SF-12).

CONCLUSIONS

Based on a solid process of development and consultations with clinical professionals and patients, a valid MG-specific preference-based measure, MGQoL-6D, was developed. Further research will estimate the local preference weight to support the MG-related cost-utility analysis.IMPLICATION FOR REHABILITATIONA new condition-specific health state classification system (HCS) named Myasthenia gravis Quality of Life Scale (MGQoL-6D) is proposed.MGQoL-6D classifies MG health states as a combination of six dimensions with three response levels.The dimensions of the HCS are social activity, hobbies and fun activity, family needs, work performance, mobility, and emotion.The HCS and the upcoming value set of the MGQoL-6D could support the cost-effectiveness analysis of MG-related clinical and rehabilitated interventions.

The Influence of Media on the Stigma of Suicide when a Postsecondary Student Dies by Suicide

This study investigated whether media articles from a postsecondary institution could influence students' stigma toward suicide after a student dies by suicide. Undergraduate participants (N = 425) read a fictitious scenario about a student suicide and were randomly assigned to a control article (no mention of the suicide) or one of three intervention articles that acknowledged the suicide and included a discussion with a psychologist, a friend of the decedent, or a suicide survivor. The stigma toward suicide survivors, particularly stereotypes, was significantly less after the three intervention articles compared to the control. No differences were found between the intervention articles or regarding the stigma toward suicide decedents. Reduced stigma toward survivors indicates that acknowledging a suicide, when possible, should be considered.

Early-life adversity is associated with poor iron status in infancy

Exposure to early-life adversity (ELA) and iron deficiency early in life are known risk factors for suboptimal brain and socioemotional development. Iron deficiency may arise from and co-occur with ELA, which could negatively affect development. In the present study, we investigated whether ELA is associated with iron deficiency in infants receiving no iron supplementation. This study is a secondary analysis of extant data collected in the 1990s; participants were healthy infants from working-class communities in Santiago, Chile (N = 534, 45.5% female). We measured stressful life events, maternal depression, and low home support for child development during infancy and assessed iron status when the infant was 12 months old. Slightly more than half of the infants were iron-deficient (51%), and 25.8% were iron-deficient anemic at 12 months. Results indicated that ELA was associated with lower iron levels and iron deficiency at 12 months. The findings are consistent with animal and human prenatal models of stress and iron status and provide evidence of the association between postnatal ELA and iron status in humans. The findings also highlight a nutritional pathway by which ELA may impact development and present a nutritionally-focused avenue for future research on ELA and psychopathology.

Improving reliability estimation in cognitive diagnosis modeling

Cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs) are used in educational, clinical, or personnel selection settings to classify respondents with respect to discrete attributes, identifying strengths and needs, and thus allowing to provide tailored training/treatment. As in any assessment, an accurate reliability estimation is crucial for valid score interpretations. In this sense, most CDM reliability indices are based on the posterior probabilities of the estimated attribute profiles. These posteriors are traditionally computed using point estimates for the model parameters as approximations to their populational values. If the uncertainty around these parameters is unaccounted for, the posteriors may be overly peaked, deriving into overestimated reliabilities. This article presents a multiple imputation (MI) procedure to integrate out the model parameters in the estimation of the posterior distributions, thus correcting the reliability estimation. A simulation study was conducted to compare the MI procedure with the traditional reliability estimation. Five factors were manipulated: the attribute structure, the CDM model (DINA and G-DINA), test length, sample size, and item quality. Additionally, an illustration using the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English data was analyzed. The effect of sample size was studied by sampling subsets of subjects from the complete data. In both studies, the traditional reliability estimation systematically provided overestimated reliabilities, whereas the MI procedure offered more accurate results. Accordingly, practitioners in small educational or clinical settings should be aware that the reliability estimation using model parameter point estimates may be positively biased. R codes for the MI procedure are made available.

Modality-specific associations between sensory differences and autistic traits

LAY ABSTRACT

Sensory symptoms are a major source of distress for many autistic people, causing anxiety, stress, and avoidance. Sensory problems are thought to be passed on genetically together with other autistic characteristics, such as social preferences. This means that people who report cognitive rigidity and autistic-like social function are more likely to suffer from sensory issues. We do not know what role the individual senses, such as vision, hearing, smell, or touch, play in this relationship, because sensory processing is generally measured with questionnaires that target general, multisensory issues. This study aimed to investigate the individual importance of the different senses (vision, hearing, touch, smell, taste, balance, and proprioception) in the correlation with autistic traits. To ensure the results were replicable, we repeated the experiment in two large groups of adults. The first group contained 40% autistic participants, whereas the second group resembled the general population. We found that problems with auditory processing were more strongly predictive of general autistic characteristics than were problems with the other senses. Problems with touch were specifically related to differences in social interaction, such as avoiding social settings. We also found a specific relationship between proprioceptive differences and autistic-like communication preferences. The sensory questionnaire had limited reliability, so our results may underestimate the contribution of some senses. With that reservation in mind, we conclude that auditory differences are dominant over other modalities in predicting genetically based autistic traits and may therefore be of special interest for further genetic and neurobiological studies.

The role of employee assistance programs under COVID-19-induced work-family conflict: Effects on service employees' work engagement and burnout

The COVID-19 pandemic places substantial stress on service employees' work and home lives. Little research has explored the negative effects of perceived stress from COVID-19 on work and home domains in terms of employees' attitudes toward work. We adopt a job demands-resources perspective to examine how perceived stress from COVID-19 affects employees' work (i.e., work engagement and burnout) and home life (i.e., work-family conflict and family-work conflict). In particular, we address whether organizational employee assistance programs can buffer these negative effects. We sampled service employees (n = 248), and results show that perceived stress from COVID-19 increases work engagement and burnout through work-family conflict and family-work conflict. Furthermore, employee assistance programs mean that employees are less likely to experience work-family conflict and family-work conflict when faced with perceived stress from COVID-19. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these findings and propose directions for future research.

Understanding medical student paths to communication skills expertise using latent profile analysis

PURPOSE

To describe patterns of clinical communication skills that inform curriculum enhancement and guide coaching of medical students.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Performance data from 1182 consenting third year medical students in 9 cohorts (2011-2019), on a 17-item Clinical Communication Skills Assessment Tool (CCSAT) completed by trained Standardized Patients as part of an eight case high stakes Comprehensive Clinical Skills Exam (CCSE) were analyzed using latent profile analysis (LPA). Assessment domains included: information gathering (6 items), relationship development (5 items), patient education (3 items), and organization/time management (3 items). LPA clustered learners with similar strength/weakness into profiles based on item response patterns across cases. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) assessed for significant differences by profile for CCSAT items.

RESULTS

Student performance clustered into six profiles in three groups, high performing (HP1 and HP2-Low Patient Education, 15.7%), average performing (AP1 and AP2-Interrupters, 40.9%), and lower performing profiles (LP1-Non-interrupters and LP2, 43.4%) with adequate model fit estimations and similar distribution in each cohort. We identified 3 CCSAT items that discriminated among learner's skill profiles.

CONCLUSION

Clinical communication skill performance profiles provide nuanced, benchmarked guidance for curriculum improvement and tailoring of communication skills coaching.

Adaptation and validation of the cardiovascular version of the Return-to-Work Obstacles and Self-Efficacy Scale (ROSES-CVD) to the Italian context

PURPOSE

Effective cardiac rehabilitation interventions must provide adequate support to overcome psychosocial return-to-work (RTW) barriers. No validated instrument is available for this aim for cardiovascular patients. The Return-to-work Obstacles and Self-Efficacy Scale (ROSES) measures RTW obstacles workers perceive and the self-efficacy for overcoming them through 46 items and ten dimensions. This study aimed to adapt and validate ROSES for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the Italian context.

METHODS

This prospective study involved 183 CVD working patients at baseline and 121 six months later. ROSES-CVD internal consistency, construct, and predictive validity was evaluated with Cronbach's α, Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA), and ANCOVAs.

RESULTS

CFAs adequately replicated the original ROSES model (CFI = .92-.96; TLI = .91-.94; RMSEA = .042-.057; SRMR = .046-.071) with α close or higher than .70 for all dimensions. Four ROSES-CVD dimensions significantly predicted the number of days to RTW controlling for age, gender, educational level, and surgery type. Workers who perceived salient RTW obstacles and low self-efficacy in any of these dimensions in mean returned to work from 38 to 53 days later.

CONCLUSIONS

The study supported the validity and reliability of ROSES-CVD. This tool can be used in rehabilitation to detect CVD patients at risk of a longer RTW process and define appropriate cardiac rehabilitation intervention.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONVocational rehabilitation interventions should provide tailor-made support to overcome RTW barriers based on individual risk assessmentThe Italian translation of ROSES-CVD is a valid and reliable tool to measure psychosocial barriers to RTW among CVD working patientsThe use of ROSES-CVD would allow detection of CVD patients at risk of longer RTW processAdministering ROSES-CVD can help focus traditional vocational intervention on individually relevant obstacles to RTW.

Health Behavior Patterns and Associated Risk of Memory-Related Disorders Among Middle-Aged and Older Chinese Couples

Objectives: Studies on the interdependence of couples' health behaviors and subsequent cognitive outcomes remain limited. Methods: Longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2018) were used (N = 1869 heterosexual couples). Latent class analysis identified the dyadic pattern of health behaviors in 2011 (i.e., alcohol consumption, smoking, and physical inactivity). Stratified Cox models examined the association of latent classes with risk of developing memory-related disorders in 2013-2018. Results: Three classes were identified: class 1 (21.25%, only husband smoke, and both active), class 2 (47.55%, both inactive, neither drink nor smoke), and class 3 (31.20%, both drink and smoke, and both active). Couples' sedentary lifestyle was associated with an increased risk of memory-related disorders among both husbands and wives. Conclusion: Couples were moderately concordant in their physical activity but weakly in smoking and drinking. Couple-based interventions, especially promoting physical activity, may reduce cognitive aging among middle-aged and older Chinese couples.

Examining an integrated sociocultural and objectification model of thinness- and muscularity-oriented disordered eating in Chinese older men and women

OBJECTIVE

We tested an integrated model of three prominent theories of disordered eating (tripartite influence theory, objectification theory, and social comparison theory) in a sample of older Chinese men and women.

METHOD

Chinese older men (n = 270) and women (n = 160) completed questionnaires assessing the tripartite influence, objectification, and social comparison theories and thinness- and muscularity-oriented disordered eating. Two structural equation models were tested in Chinese older men and women.

RESULTS

The integrated model showed good model fit and described meaningful variance in thinness- and muscularity-oriented disordered eating in Chinese older men and women. Higher appearance pressures were uniquely related to higher muscularity-oriented disordered eating in men. Across both gender groups, higher thinness internalization was uniquely related to higher thinness- and muscularity-oriented disordered eating, and in women only, higher muscularity internalization was uniquely related to lower thinness-oriented disordered eating. In men, higher upward and downward body image comparisons were uniquely related to higher and lower, respectively, muscularity-oriented disordered eating. In women, higher upward body image comparisons were only uniquely related to higher muscularity-oriented disordered eating while higher downward body image comparisons were uniquely related to both outcomes. Higher body shame was uniquely related to higher thinness-oriented disordered eating across both groups and in men alone, higher body shame was also uniquely related to higher muscularity-oriented disordered eating.

DISCUSSION

Findings, which tested the integration of tripartite influence, objectification, and social comparison theories, inform the prevention and treatment of disordered eating in Chinese older populations.

PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE

The present study is the first to describe theories of disordered eating (tripartite influence, objectification, and social comparison) in Chinese older adults. Findings suggested good model fit and the integrated models described meaningful variance in thinness- and muscularity-oriented disordered eating in Chinese older women and men. Findings extend existing theories of disordered eating and, pending further study, may inform theory-driven prevention and treatment approaches in Chinese older adults.

Global Perceptions on Social Accountability and Outcomes: A Survey of Medical Schools

Phenomenon: Social accountability has become a universal component in medical education. However, medical schools have little guidance for operationalizing and applying this concept in practice. This study explored institutional practices and administrative perceptions of social accountability in medical education. Approach: An online survey was distributed to a purposeful sample of English-speaking undergraduate medical school deans and program directors/leads from 245 institutions in 14 countries. The survey comprised of 38-items related to program mission statements, admission processes, curricular content, and educational outcomes. Survey items were developed using previous literature and categorized using a context-input-process-products (CIPP) evaluation model. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was used to assess the inter-relationship among survey items. Reliability and internal consistency of items were evaluated using McDonald's Omega. Findings: Results from 81 medical schools in 14 countries collected between February and June 2020 are presented. Institutional commonalities of social accountability were observed. However, our findings suggest programs focus predominately on educational inputs and processes, and not necessarily on outcomes. Findings from our EFA demonstrated excellent internal consistency and reliability. Four-factors were extracted: (1) selection and recruitment; (2) institutional mandates; (3) institutional activities; and (4) community awareness, accounting for 71% of the variance. McDonald's Omega reliability estimates for subscales ranged from 0.80-0.87. Insights: This study identified common practices of social accountability. While many medical schools expressed an institutional commitment to social accountability, their effects on the community remain unknown and not evaluated. Overall, this paper offers programs and educators a psychometrically supported tool to aid in the operationalization and reliability of evaluating social accountability.

A Longitudinal Test of the Conservative-Liberal Well-Being Gap

In this article, we test if conservatism predicts psychological well-being longitudinally. We based the study on previous findings showing that conservatives score higher on different measures of well-being, such as life satisfaction and happiness. Most explanations in the literature have assumed that conservatism antecedes well-being without considering the alternative-that well-being may predict conservatism. In Study 1, using multilevel cross-lagged panel models with a two-wave longitudinal sample consisting of data from 19 countries (N = 8,740), we found that conservatism did not predict well-being over time. We found similar results in Study 2 (N = 2,554), using random-intercept cross-lagged panel models with a four-wave longitudinal sample from Chile. We discuss the main implications of these results for the literature examining the association between conservatism and well-being.

Application of deep learning models for detection of subdural hematoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to investigate the application of deep learning (DL) models for the detection of subdural hematoma (SDH).

METHODS

We conducted a comprehensive search using relevant keywords. Articles extracted were original studies in which sensitivity and/or specificity were reported. Two different approaches of frequentist and Bayesian inference were applied. For quality and risk of bias assessment we used Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2).

RESULTS

We analyzed 22 articles that included 1,997,749 patients. In the first step, the frequentist method showed a pooled sensitivity of 88.8% (95% confidence interval (CI): 83.9% to 92.4%) and a specificity of 97.2% (95% CI 94.6% to 98.6%). In the second step, using Bayesian methods including 11 studies that reported sensitivity and specificity, a sensitivity rate of 86.8% (95% CI: 77.6% to 92.9%) at a specificity level of 86.9% (95% CI: 60.9% to 97.2%) was achieved. The risk of bias assessment was not remarkable using QUADAS-2.

CONCLUSION

DL models might be an appropriate tool for detecting SDHs with a reasonably high sensitivity and specificity.

The impact of theatre on social competencies: a meta-analytic evaluation

BACKGROUND

There has been agrowing interest in using artistic interventions as a method of developing interpersonal competence. This paper presents a meta-analysis evaluating the impact of theatre interventions on social competencies.

METHODS

Twenty-one primary studies totaling 4064 participants were included, presenting evidence available since 1983. Included studies were assessed in terms of quality, heterogeneity, and publication bias.

RESULTS

Our findings indicated that active theatre participation significantly improved participants' empathic abilities, social communication, tolerance, and social interactions, with the largest pooled effect size for social communication (0.698) and the smallest for tolerance (0.156). Our findings did not corroborate the impact of theatre on self-concept.

CONCLUSIONS

This paper shows that theatre interventions have a positive impact on social competencies. The paper makes a methodological contribution by showing that randomized and non-randomized studies yielded comparably valid results.

Assessing the differential item functioning of PHQ-9 items for diverse racial and ethnic adults with mental health and/or substance use disorder diagnoses: A retrospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

Improving health equity in depression care and suicide screening requires that measures like the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) function similarly for diverse racial and ethnic groups. We evaluated PHQ-9 differential item functioning (DIF) between racial/ethnic groups in a retrospective cohort study of secondary electronic health record (EHR) data from eight healthcare systems.

METHODS

The population (n = 755,156) included patients aged 18-64 with mental health and/or substance use disorder (SUD) diagnoses who had a PHQ-9 with no missing item data in the EHR for primary care or mental health visits between 1/1/2009-9/30/2017. We drew two random samples of 1000 from the following racial/ethnic groups originally recorded in EHRs (n = 14,000): Hispanic, and non-Hispanic White, Black, Asian, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, multiracial. We assessed DIF using iterative hybrid ordinal logistic regression and item response theory with p < 0.01 and 1000 Monte Carlo simulations, where change in model R2 > 0.01 represented non-negligible (e.g., clinically meaningful) DIF.

RESULTS

All PHQ-9 items displayed statistically significant, but negligible (e.g., clinically unmeaningful) DIF between compared groups. The negligible DIF varied between random samples, although six items showed negligible DIF between the same comparison groups in both random samples.

LIMITATIONS

Our findings may not generalize to disaggregated racial/ethnic groups or persons without mental health and/or SUD diagnoses.

CONCLUSIONS

We found the PHQ-9 had clinically unmeaningful cross-cultural DIF for adult patients with mental health and/or SUD diagnoses. Future research could disaggregate race/ethnicity to discern if within-group identification impacts PHQ-9 DIF.

Effects of a 16-week home-based exercise training programme on health-related quality of life, functional capacity, and persistent symptoms in survivors of severe/critical COVID-19: a randomised controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Long-lasting effects of COVID-19 may include cardiovascular, respiratory, skeletal muscle, metabolic, psychological disorders and persistent symptoms that can impair health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We investigated the effects of a home-based exercise training (HBET) programme on HRQoL and health-related outcomes in survivors of severe/critical COVID-19.

METHODS

This was a single-centre, single-blinded, parallel-group, randomised controlled trial. Fifty survivors of severe/critical COVID-19 (5±1 months after intensive care unit discharge) were randomly allocated (1:1) to either a 3 times a week (~60-80 min/session), semi-supervised, individualised, HBET programme or standard of care (CONTROL). Changes in HRQoL were evaluated through the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, and physical component summary was predetermined as the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included cardiorespiratory fitness, pulmonary function, functional capacity, body composition and persistent symptoms. Assessments were performed at baseline and after 16 weeks of intervention. Statistical analysis followed intention-to-treat principles.

RESULTS

After the intervention, HBET showed greater HRQoL score than CONTROL in the physical component summary (estimated mean difference, EMD: 16.8 points; 95% CI 5.8 to 27.9; effect size, ES: 0.74), physical functioning (EMD: 22.5 points, 95% CI 6.1 to 42.9, ES: 0.83), general health (EMD: 17.4 points, 95% CI 1.8 to 33.1, ES: 0.73) and vitality (EMD: 15.1 points, 95% CI 0.2 to 30.1, ES: 0.49) domains. 30-second sit-to-stand (EMD: 2.38 reps, 95% CI 0.01 to 4.76, ES: 0.86), and muscle weakness and myalgia were also improved in HBET compared with CONTROL (p<0.05). No significant differences were seen in the remaining variables. There were no adverse events.

CONCLUSION

HBET is an effective and safe intervention to improve physical domains of HRQoL, functional capacity and persistent symptoms in survivors of severe/critical COVID-19.

Sexual and Dating Violence Prevention Programs for Male Youth: A Systematic Review of Program Characteristics, Intended Psychosexual Outcomes, and Effectiveness

Sexual and dating violence (SDV) by male youth (≤ 25 years)-including sexual harassment, emotional partner violence, and rape-is a worldwide problem. The goal of this preregistered (PROSPERO, ID: CRD42022281220) systematic review was to map existing SDV prevention programs aimed at male youth, including their characteristics (e.g., content, intensity), intended psychosexual outcomes, and empirically demonstrated effectiveness, guided by the principles of the theory of planned behavior (TPB). We conducted searches in six online databases for published, peer-reviewed quantitative effectiveness studies on multi-session, group focused, and interaction based SDV prevention programs for male youth ending March 2022. After screening of 21,156 hits using PRISMA guidelines, 15 studies on 13 different programs, from four continents were included. Narrative analysis showed, first, broad ranges in program intensity (2-48 h total), and few program curricula included explicit discussion of relevant aspects of the TPB. Second, programs' main intended psychosexual outcomes were to change SDV experiences, or related attitudes, or norms. Third, significant effects were found mostly on longer term behaviors and short-term attitudes. Other theoretical proxies of SDV experiences, such as social norms and perceived behavioral control, were sparsely investigated; thus, program effectiveness on these outcomes remains largely unknown. Assessed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool, moderate to serious risk of bias arose in all studies. We present concrete suggestions for program content, such as explicit attention to victimization and masculinity and discuss best practices for evaluation research, including assessments of program integrity, and examining relevant theoretical proxies of SDV.

Leadership in the eye of the beholder: Follower self-esteem is associated with divergent perceptions of leadership ability for dominant and prestigious leaders

OBJECTIVE

Drawing from dual-strategies theory, leader-member exchange theory, and several theories of self-esteem, we develop and test hypotheses about how followers' self-esteem predicts their perceptions of dominant and prestigious leaders' leadership ability.

METHOD

Across four studies (N = 1568), we tested the association between self-esteem and perceptions of leadership ability for dominant and prestigious leaders.

RESULTS

Individuals with high self-esteem perceived greater leadership ability in prestigious leaders than did those with low self-esteem and individuals with low self-esteem perceived greater leadership ability in dominant leaders than did those with high self-esteem. These results emerged across ratings of leaders from hypothetical vignettes (Studies 1 and 4), abstract beliefs about what constitutes good leadership (Study 1), past personal experiences with leaders (Study 2) and clips of leaders from reality television (Study 3). In Study 4, we also tested potential mechanisms. Compared with followers with low self-esteem, followers with high self-esteem found prestigious leaders more trustworthy, and they anticipated feeling inauthentic around a dominant leader.

CONCLUSIONS

Self-esteem is reliably and robustly related to perceived leadership ability of dominant and prestigious leaders, and these differences might stem from differences in trust in prestigious leaders and anticipated authenticity around dominant leaders.

Resilience as Mediator in Relation to Parental Attachment and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Adolescents Following the Yancheng Tornado

Resilience and secure parental attachment have been proven as important factors to alleviate the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the effects of the two factors on PTSD and the mechanisms of its effect at different time points in the aftermath of trauma are still unclear. This study explores the relationship among parental attachment, resilience, and development of PTSD symptoms in adolescents from a longitudinal perspective following the Yancheng Tornado. Using cluster sampling method, a total of 351 Chinese adolescents, survivors of a severe tornado, were tested on their PTSD, parental attachment and resilience at 12-months and 18-months after experiencing the natural disaster. The results showed that our proposed model fit the data well: χ2/df = 3.197, CFI = 0.967, TLI = 0.950, RMSEA = 0.079. It revealed that the resilience at 18-months partially mediated the relationship between parental attachment at 12-months and PTSD at 18-months. Research results showed that parental attachment and resilience are key resources for coping with trauma.

Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors in Older U.S. Military Veterans: Results From the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study

OBJECTIVE

To identify the prevalence and correlates associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) in a nationally representative sample of older (55+) US military veterans.

METHODS

Data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study (N = 3,356; mean age = 70.6). Self-report measures of past-year suicidal ideation (SI), lifetime suicide plan, lifetime suicide attempt(s), and future suicide intent were examined in relation to sociodemographic, neuropsychiatric, trauma, physical health, and protective factors.

RESULTS

A total of 6.6% (95% CI = 5.7%-7.8%) of the sample endorsed past-year SI, 4.1% (CI = 3.3%-5.1%) a lifetime suicide plan, 1.8% (CI = 1.4%-2.3%) a lifetime suicide attempt, and 0.9% (CI = 0.5%-1.3%) future suicide intent. Higher levels of loneliness and lower levels of purpose in life were most strongly associated with past-year SI; lifetime history of major depressive disorder with suicide plan and suicide attempt; and frequency of past-year SI and more negative expectations regarding emotional aging with future suicide intent.

CONCLUSION

These findings provide the most up-to-date nationally representative prevalence estimates of STBs among older military veterans in the United States. Several modifiable vulnerability factors were found to be associated with suicide risk in older US military veterans, suggesting that these factors may be targets for intervention in this population.

Utility of the Healthy Aging Brain Care Monitor as a Patient-Reported Symptom Monitoring Tool in Older Injury Survivors

INTRODUCTION

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Healthy Aging Brain Care Monitor (HABC-M) as a patient-reported outcome tool to measure cognitive, functional, and psychological symptoms among older adults who sustained non-neurologic injuries requiring hospital admission.

METHODS

We used data from a multicenter randomized controlled trial to evaluate the utility of the HABC-M Self-Report version in older patients recovering from traumatic injuries. A total of 143 patients without cognitive impairment were included in the analysis. Cronbach's alpha was used to measure the internal consistency, and Spearman's rank correlation test was used to evaluate the relationship of the HABC-M with standard measures of cognitive, functional, and psychological outcomes.

RESULTS

The HABC-M subscales and the total scale showed satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.64 to 0.77). The HABC-M cognitive subscale did not correlate with the Mini-Mental State Examination. The HABC-M functional and psychological subscales correlated with corresponding standard reference measures (|rs| = 0.24-0.59).

CONCLUSIONS

The HABC-M Self-Report version is a practical alternative to administering multiple surveys to monitor functional and psychological sequelae in older patients recovering from recent non-neurologic injuries. Its clinical application may facilitate personalized, multidisciplinary care coordination among older trauma survivors without cognitive impairment.

Assessing the validity and responsiveness of a generic preference quality of life measure in the context of posttraumatic stress disorder

PURPOSE

There is limited research exploring the usefulness of generic preference-based quality of life (GPQoL) measures used to facilitate economic evaluation in the context of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of the current study was to explore the validity and responsiveness of a common GPQoL measure (Assessment of Quality of Life 8 Dimension [AQoL-8D]) in relation to a PTSD condition-specific outcome measure (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for the DSM-5 [PCL-5]).

METHOD

This aim was investigated in a sample of individuals (N = 147) who received trauma-focused cognitive-behavioural therapies for posttraumatic stress disorder. Convergent validity was investigated using spearman's correlations, and the level of agreement was investigated using Bland-Altman plots. Responsiveness was investigated by exploring the standardised response means (SRM) from pre-post-treatment across the two measures, which allow the comparison of the magnitude of change between the measures over time.

RESULTS

Correlations between the AQoL-8D (dimensions, utility and summary total scores) and the PCL-5 total score ranged from small to large and agreement between the measures was considered moderate to good. While SRMs were large for the AQoL-8D and PCL-5 total scores, the SRM for the PCL-5 was nearly double that of the AQoL-8D.

CONCLUSION

Our findings demonstrate that the AQoL-8D has good construct validity but present preliminary evidence that economic evaluations using only GPQoL measures may not fully capture the effectiveness of PTSD treatments.

The Vermont Family Based Approach in Primary Care Pediatrics: Effects on Children's and Parents' Emotional and Behavioral Problems and Parents' Health-Related Quality of Life

This randomized controlled trial tested the Vermont Family Based Approach (VFBA) in primary care pediatrics. The VFBA is a model of healthcare delivery that shifts the focus from the individual to the family, emphasizes emotional and behavioral health, and uses evidence-based health promotion/prevention along with the treatment of emotional and behavioral problems. Participants were 81 families of 3-15-year-olds. For children, the VFBA was associated with greater reductions than the Control condition on the Child Behavior Checklist Emotionally Reactive, Withdrawn, Sleep Problems, Aggressive Behavior and Total Problems scales. For parents, the VFBA was associated with greater reductions than the Control condition on the Adult Self-Report Anxious/Depressed, Rule-Breaking Behavior, Internalizing Problems and Total Problems scales. The VFBA was also associated with greater improvement than the Control condition in the parents' health-related quality of life, as indicated by all scales of the Medical Outcomes Study Health Survey.

Effects of general change mechanisms on outcome in telephone-based cognitive-behavioral therapy for distressed family caregivers

BACKGROUND

The study investigated the influence of general change mechanisms (GCMs) on outcome in telephone-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for family caregivers.

METHODS

In a stepped-care intervention approach, highly distressed family caregivers received telephone-based CBT after completing a care counseling intervention. Sixty-six therapist-caregiver dyads rated emotional bond, agreement on collaboration, problem actuation, resource activation, clarification of meaning, and mastery after each of 12 therapy sessions. Outcomes were caregiver burden (SCQ-AV) and depression (CES-D) after therapy. Associations of GCMs with outcome were examined in multilevel regression models.

RESULTS

Caregiver burden was significantly predicted by caregiver-rated emotional bond (β = -0.18) as well as therapist-rated resource activation (β = -0.26), problem actuation (β = -0.22), clarification of meaning (β = -0.18), and mastery (β = -0.18). None of the GCMs predicted depression from any perspective.

CONCLUSION

The findings suggest that GCMs are relevant for reducing caregiver burden in CBT for family caregivers and should be fostered in treatment manuals, in particular therapist-rated GCMs. Since therapist and caregiver perspectives differed in predicting caregiver burden, future research should investigate perspective congruence and its effect on therapy outcome.

From Flirting to F*cking: Examining the Robustness of the Precarious Sexuality Effect

Men, versus women, face more doubts about their heterosexuality based on a single same-gender sexual experience, a phenomenon known as the precarious sexuality effect. This phenomenon has thus far only been examined with sexually explicit same-gender acts (e.g., kissing, oral sex). Here, we conducted secondary data analyses of five large datasets of US adults (total N = 9770) to examine the replicability and robustness of the precarious sexuality effect across a range of same-gender acts varying in sexual explicitness. Using cross-classified hierarchical linear modeling, we replicated the precarious sexuality effect across all samples and demonstrated-in preregistered exploratory and confirmatory tests-that this effect was moderated by sexual explicitness. Consistent with our predictions, same-gender acts that were merely flirtatious (e.g., blowing a kiss) elicited stronger precarious sexuality (i.e., target gender) effects than same-gender acts that were explicitly sexual (e.g., oral sex), presumably because the former acts are more ambiguous and thereby allow more room for interpretation. Further, we found no consistent evidence that the precarious sexuality effect was moderated by perceiver characteristics including gender, sexual orientation, age, race, gender role beliefs, religiosity, or political orientation. Discussion considers possible explanations for the precarious sexuality effect and identifies important avenues for future research.

"No, It's You:" Dyadic perceived need for change predicts relationship education outcomes

Relationship education (RE) efforts have been shown to help couples and individuals with a variety of family relationships. However, much still needs to be identified in terms of what factors are salient to outcomes. Drawing on therapeutic models of change, we have identified perceived need for change as one such potential factor. Using data from a couple RE course (n = 447 couples), we assessed how dyadic congruence and average ratings of each partner's need for change were associated with change in three RE outcomes: knowledge, communication, and commitment. In general, the more partners perceived that their partner needed to change, above and beyond what their partner thought, the less change occurred. Implications for RE programming and implementation are discussed, as well as the potential role of therapeutic models and techniques in RE.

Maximin optimal cluster randomized designs for assessing treatment effect heterogeneity

Cluster randomized trials (CRTs) are studies where treatment is randomized at the cluster level but outcomes are typically collected at the individual level. When CRTs are employed in pragmatic settings, baseline population characteristics may moderate treatment effects, leading to what is known as heterogeneous treatment effects (HTEs). Pre-specified, hypothesis-driven HTE analyses in CRTs can enable an understanding of how interventions may impact subpopulation outcomes. While closed-form sample size formulas have recently been proposed, assuming known intracluster correlation coefficients (ICCs) for both the covariate and outcome, guidance on optimal cluster randomized designs to ensure maximum power with pre-specified HTE analyses has not yet been developed. We derive new design formulas to determine the cluster size and number of clusters to achieve the locally optimal design (LOD) that minimizes variance for estimating the HTE parameter given a budget constraint. Given the LODs are based on covariate and outcome-ICC values that are usually unknown, we further develop the maximin design for assessing HTE, identifying the combination of design resources that maximize the relative efficiency of the HTE analysis in the worst case scenario. In addition, given the analysis of the average treatment effect is often of primary interest, we also establish optimal designs to accommodate multiple objectives by combining considerations for studying both the average and heterogeneous treatment effects. We illustrate our methods using the context of the Kerala Diabetes Prevention Program CRT, and provide an R Shiny app to facilitate calculation of optimal designs under a wide range of design parameters.

Independent, modified, and interacting effects of long-term noise, extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields, and shift work exposures on liver enzymes

To quantify long-term independent, modified, and interacting effects of noise, extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs), and shift work exposures on liver enzymes, a four-year repeated measures study was performed among male workers in a thermal power plant industry from 2016 to 2020. The 8-h equivalent sound pressure levels (Leq) were measured at weighting channels of Z, A, and C for octave-band frequencies. The 8-h time-weighted average of ELF-EMFs levels was measured for each participant. Shift work schedule was determined based on job titles, including 3-rotating night shift work and fixed day shift work schedules. The fasting blood samples were taken to determine liver enzymes (AST, Aspartate transaminase; ALT, Alanine transaminase). The percentage change (PC) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of AST and ALT enzymes were estimated by the different bootstrapped-mixed-effects linear regression models. Per 10-dB noise increase, we found a significantly higher PC (95% CI) of AST and ALT (only LAeq) levels in all regression models with the highest changes for LAeq. For the octave-band noise analysis, there was an upward trend from 31.5 Hz to 1 kHz frequencies and a downward trend from 1 to 8 kHz frequencies. Per 1 mG ELF-EMFs increase, we observed a significantly higher PC (95% CI) of AST and ALT enzymes in the main adjusted and the main adjusted + shift work models. The 3-rotating night than fixed day shift workers had a significant PC in the unadjusted model for AST enzyme and the fully adjusted and the main adjusted + ELF-EMFs models for ALT enzyme. Significant negative two-way or/and three-way interaction effects among the noise, ELF-EMFs, and shift work were observed for both AST and ALT enzymes. Our findings indicated long-term noise, ELF-EMFs, and 3-rotating night shift work exposures may be significantly associated with changes in the levels of liver enzymes.

Emotional Distress in a Marginalized Population as a Function of Household-Level Social Determinants of Health

Low-income, underrepresented communities of color are disproportionally affected by emotional distress. Little is known about malleable, household-level determinants of emotional distress, addressable by feasible, stigma-neutral interventions. The present study addressed this knowledge gap by analyzing secondary data from a cross-sectional community needs assessment survey in a marginalized urban community (N = 677). Relying on dominance analyses, authors found that, on average, the largest household-level contributions to respondents' emotional distress included exposures to fellow household members' alcohol use and anger-driven behaviors. Both determinants are arguably feasible to address via household-level interventions and community-level preventive efforts. Household members' physical and serious mental illness and drug use were moderately associated with respondents' emotional distress; household cohesion and communications, residential overcrowding, and child behavior played a minimal role. Article concludes with a discussion of public health implications of the results.

School climate, school identification and student outcomes: A longitudinal investigation of student well-being

BACKGROUND

Schools are increasingly recognized as key facilitators of child and youth well-being. Much attention has been directed to the school social environment and the areas of school climate or school connectedness/identification. Drawing on the social identity approach and related work, it has been argued that school social identification may be the mechanism or process through which school climate comes to impact individual student functioning (Applied Psychology, 28, 2009, 171). Much of the previous research on social identity and well-being, though, is limited because it is cross-sectional.

AIMS, SAMPLE & METHODS

This current study aims to advance understanding of the relationships between school climate, school identification and positive and negative well-being. It adopts a three-wave longitudinal sample of Australian students (N = 6537 wave 3, grades 7-10) and incorporates a range of control variables. Multilevel modelling (MLM) is used to test relationships of interest.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

In line with predictions, school identification was a significant mediator of the relationship between school climate and the well-being dimensions of positive affect and depression (but not anxiety). The substantial theoretical and practical implications of this research are discussed, including the role of the school social environment in helping young people successfully transition to adulthood.

Predicting the effects of supply chain resilience and robustness on COVID-19 impacts and performance: Empirical investigation through resources orchestration perspective

This study investigates the effects of supply chain (SCRE) and robustness (SCRO) on COVID-19 super disruption impacts and firm's financial performance by mobilizing the resources orchestration theory (ROT) as the main theoretical framework. We adopt structural equation modeling analysis of data collected from 289 French companies. The findings reveal the significantly positive influence of resources orchestration on SCRE and SCRO and the role of the latter in mitigating the pandemic disruption impacts. Notwithstanding, depending on whether the measures are objective or subjective, the effects of SCRE and SCRO on financial performance vary. Overall, this paper presents empirical evidence of the influence of both of SCRE and SCRO on pandemic disruption impacts and financial performance. Furthermore, this research provides insights to guide practitioners and decision makers regarding resources orchestration and the deployment of SCRE and SCRO.

Social relations and leisure activities as predictors of wellbeing among older adults with multiple sclerosis: A cross-sectional survey study in Denmark

BACKGROUND

Due to the growing number of people aging with multiple sclerosis (MS), there has been a call for rehabilitation specially targeted older adults with MS in order to support them in better wellbeing, despite physical and cognitive impairment. However, the existing research within the area of rehabilitation has primarily focused on the physical and psychological aspects of aging with MS, omitting the social element.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to examine how social relations and engagement in leisure activities predict wellbeing among older adults with MS living in Denmark. Furthermore, the study aims to identify which sociodemographic and health-related factors are the most important in predicting whether older adults with MS face challenges in participating in leisure activities and experiencing different kinds of social relations.

METHOD

A cross-sectional survey was designed to measure social relations, wellbeing, and engagement in leisure activities among older adults with MS. Of the 4,329 people over 65 years diagnosed with MS in Denmark in 2022, 2,574 (59.46%) were invited to participated in the study, and 1,107 (43.03%) ended up answering the survey. Linear and logistic regression analyses and dominance analyses were conducted to examine the associations between wellbeing, leisure activities, social relations, sociodemographic and health-related factors.

RESULTS

The results of the study show that perceived emotional social support (mean difference 8.69, 95% CI 5.23; 12.14) and perceived instrumental social support (mean difference 4.15, 95% CI 0.95; 7.35), were associated with better wellbeing among older adults with MS. Perceived strained social relations (mean difference -7.95, 95% CI -10.66; -5.26) were on the contrary associated with lower levels of wellbeing. Strained social relations were the most important predictors of wellbeing accounting for 59% of the predicted variance. Experiencing social emotional support from friends, coworkers, or neighbors (39% of the predicted variance), experiencing instrumental social support from children or children in law (43% of the predicted variance), and experiencing strained social relations with partner (48% of the predicted variance) constituted he most important predictor of wellbeing. Engagement in five out of fourteen leisure activities were associated with better wellbeing among the participants. The leisure activities there was found to be the most important predictor of wellbeing represented both social (37% of the predicted variance), physical (18% of the predicted variance), and creative elements (13% of the predicted variance). Finally, cohabitation was found to be the most important predictor of having perceived emotional social support (59% of the predicted variance), instrumental social support (78.9% of the predicted variance) and strained social relations (18.8% of the predicted variance) and mobility was found to be the most important predictor of challenges in participating in leisure activities (81.8% of the predicted variance).

CONCLUSION

The findings of the study highlight that rehabilitation targeting older adults with MS should focus on both physical, psychological, and social elements of peoples' everyday life. Further, the results indicate that future rehabilitation focusing on social elements of aging with MS should take into account health and sociodemographic characteristics such as cohabitation, mobility, age, and sex, as these potentially relate to participation in leisure activities as well as social relations among older adults.

Meta-analyzing partial correlation coefficients using Fisher's z transformation

The partial correlation coefficient (PCC) is used to quantify the linear relationship between two variables while taking into account/controlling for other variables. Researchers frequently synthesize PCCs in a meta-analysis, but two of the assumptions of the common equal-effect and random-effects meta-analysis model are by definition violated. First, the sampling variance of the PCC cannot assumed to be known, because the sampling variance is a function of the PCC. Second, the sampling distribution of each primary study's PCC is not normal since PCCs are bounded between -1 and 1. I advocate applying the Fisher's z transformation analogous to applying Fisher's z transformation for Pearson correlation coefficients, because the Fisher's z transformed PCC is independent of the sampling variance and its sampling distribution more closely follows a normal distribution. Reproducing a simulation study by Stanley and Doucouliagos and adding meta-analyses based on Fisher's z transformed PCCs shows that the meta-analysis based on Fisher's z transformed PCCs had lower bias and root mean square error than meta-analyzing PCCs. Hence, meta-analyzing Fisher's z transformed PCCs is a viable alternative to meta-analyzing PCCs, and I recommend to accompany any meta-analysis based on PCCs with one using Fisher's z transformed PCCs to assess the robustness of the results.

Research-Problem Validity in Primary Research: Precision and Transparency in Characterizing Past Knowledge

Four validity types evaluate the approximate truth of inferences communicated by primary research. However, current validity frameworks ignore the truthfulness of empirical inferences that are central to research-problem statements. Problem statements contrast a review of past research with other knowledge that extends, contradicts, or calls into question specific features of past research. Authors communicate empirical inferences, or quantitative judgments, about the frequency (e.g., "few," "most") and variability (e.g., "on the one hand," "on the other hand") in their reviews of existing theories, measures, samples, or results. We code a random sample of primary research articles and show that 83% of quantitative judgments in our sample are vague and do not have a transparent origin, making it difficult to assess their validity. We review validity threats of current practices. We propose that documenting the literature search, reporting how the search was coded, and quantifying the search results facilitates more precise judgments and makes their origin transparent. This practice enables research questions that are more closely tied to the existing body of knowledge and allows for more informed evaluations of the contribution of primary research articles, their design choices, and how they advance knowledge. We discuss potential limitations of our proposed framework.

Psychometric Properties, Factor Structure, and Validity of the Sensitivity to Threat and Affiliative Reward Scale in Children and Adults

Callous-Unemotional (CU) traits identify children at high risk of antisocial behavior. A recent theoretical model proposed that CU traits arise from low sensitivity to threat and affiliation. To assess these dimensions, we developed the parent- and self-reported Sensitivity to Threat and Affiliative Reward Scale (STARS) and tested its psychometric properties, factor structure, and construct validity. Samples 1 (N =3 03; age 3-10; United States) and 2 (N = 854 age 5-9; Spain) were children and Sample 3 was 514 young adults (Mage = 19.89; United States). In Sample 1, differential item functioning and item response theory techniques were used to identify the best-performing items from a 64-item pool, resulting in 28 items that functioned equivalently across age and gender. Factor analysis indicated acceptable fit for the theorized two-factor structure with separate threat and affiliation factors in all three samples, which showed predictive validity in relation to CU traits in children and psychopathic traits in young adults.

Covariate inclusion in factor mixture modeling: Evaluating one-step and three-step approaches under model misspecification and overfitting

Factor mixture modeling (FMM) has been increasingly used in behavioral and social sciences to examine unobserved population heterogeneity. Covariates (e.g., gender, race) are often included in FMM to help understand the formation and characterization of latent subgroups or classes. This Monte Carlo simulation study evaluated the performance of one-step and three-step approaches to covariate inclusion across three scenarios, i.e., correct specification (study 1), model misspecification (study 2), and model overfitting (study 3), in terms of direct covariate effects on factors. Results showed that the performance of these two approaches was comparable when class separation was large and the specification of covariate effect was correct. However, one-step FMM had better class enumeration than the three-step approach when class separation was poor, and was more robust to the misspecification or overfitting concerning direct covariate effects. Recommendations regarding covariate inclusion approaches are provided herein depending on class separation and sample size. Large sample size (1000 or more) and the use of sample size-adjusted BIC (saBIC) in class enumeration are recommended.

How Does the Number of Response Options Impact the Psychometric Properties of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale?

The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale is the most frequently used measure of self-esteem in the social sciences. These items are often administered with a different number of response options, but it is unclear how the number of response options impacts the psychometric properties of this measure. Across three experiments (Ns = 739, 2,358, and 1,461), we evaluated how different response options of the Rosenberg influenced (a) coefficient alpha estimates, (b) distributions of scores, and (c) associations with criterion-related variables. Observed coefficient alpha estimates were lowest for a 2-point format compared with response formats with more options. However, supplemental analyses using ordinal alpha pointed to similar estimates across conditions. Using four or more response options better approximated a normal distribution for observed summary scores. We found no consistent evidence that criterion-related correlations increased with more response options. Collectively, these results suggest that the Rosenberg should be administered with at least four response options and we favor a 5-point Likert-type response format.

The eleven-item Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST-11): Cross-cultural psychometric evaluation across 42 countries

The Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) is an instrument to screen substance-use-related health risks. However, little is known whether the ASSIST could be further shortened while remaining psychometrically sound across different countries, languages, gender identities, and sexual-orientation-based groups. The study aimed to validate a shortened 11-item ASSIST (ASSIST-11). Using the International Sex Survey data, 82,243 participants (M age = 32.39 years) across 42 countries and 26 languages completed questions from the ASSIST-11 regarding gender identity, sexual orientation, and other information. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and multigroup CFA (MGCFA) evaluated the ASSIST-11's structure and tested measurement invariance across groups. Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω were used to examine the internal consistency. Cohen's d and independent t-tests were used to examine known-group validity. The ASSIST-11 was unidimensional across countries, languages, age groups, gender identities (i.e., men, women, and gender-diverse individuals), and sexual orientations (i.e., heterosexual and sexual minority individuals). Cronbach's α was 0.63 and McDonald's ω was 0.68 for the ASSIST-11. Known-group validity was supported by Cohen's d (range between 0.23 and 0.40) with significant differences (p-values<0.001). The ASSIST-11 is a modified instrument with a unidimensional factor structure across different languages, age groups, countries, gender identities, and sexual orientations. The low internal consistency of the ASSIST-11 might be acceptable as it assesses a broad concept (i.e., use of several different substances). Healthcare providers and researchers may use the ASSIST-11 to quickly assess substance-use information from general populations and evaluate the need to follow up with more detailed questions about substance use.

The Nomological Net of Knowledge, Self-Reported Knowledge, and Overclaiming in Children

Research on self-reported knowledge and overclaiming in children is sparse. With the current study, we aim to close this gap by developing an overclaiming questionnaire measuring self-reported knowledge and overclaiming that is tailored to children. Moreover, we examine the nomological net of self-reported knowledge and overclaiming in childhood discussing three perspectives: Overclaiming as (a) a result of deliberate self-enhancement tendencies, (b) a proxy for declarative knowledge, and (c) an indicator of creative engagement. We juxtaposed overclaiming, as indicated by claiming familiarity with non-existent terms, and self-reported knowledge with fluid and crystallized intelligence, creativity, and personality traits in a sample of 897 children attending third grade. The results of several latent variable analyses were similar to findings known from adult samples: We found no strong evidence for any of the competing perspectives on overclaiming. Just like in adults, individual differences in self-reported knowledge were strongly inflated by overclaiming, and only weakly related to declarative knowledge.

Italian version of the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT-I)

STUDY DESIGN

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of a translated, culturally adapted questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE

Translating, culturally adapting, and validating the Italian version of the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT-I).

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA

Ankle sprains are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries and can lead to chronic ankle instability (CAI). The International Ankle Consortium recommends the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) as a valid and reliable self-report questionnaire assessing the presence and severity of CAI. At this moment, there is no validated Italian version of CAIT.

METHODS

The Italian version of the CAIT (CAIT-I) was developed by an expert committee. Test-retest reliability of the CAIT-I was measured in 286 healthy and injured participants within a 4-9-day period, by using Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC2,1). Construct validity, exploratory factor analysis, internal consistency and sensitivity were examined in a sample of 548 adults. Instrument responsiveness over 4 time points was determined in a subgroup of 37 participants.

RESULTS

The CAIT-I demonstrated excellent test-retest reliability (ICC≥0.92) and good internal consistency (α = .84). Construct validity was confirmed. Identified cut-off for the presence of CAI was 24.75, with sensitivity= 0.77 and specificity= 0.65. There were significant differences across time for CAIT-I scores (P < .001), demonstrating responsiveness to change, but no floor or ceiling effects.

CONCLUSION

The CAIT-I demonstrates acceptable psychometric performance as a screening and outcome measure. The CAIT-I is a useful tool to assess the presence and severity of CAI.

Adjusting for Baseline Measurements of the Mediators and Outcome as a First Step Toward Eliminating Confounding Biases in Mediation Analysis

Mediation analysis prevails for researchers probing the etiological mechanisms through which treatment affects an outcome. A central challenge of mediation analysis is justifying sufficient baseline covariates that meet the causal assumption of no unmeasured confounding. But current practices routinely overlook this assumption. In this article, we suggest a relatively easy way to mitigate the risks of incorrect inferences resulting from unmeasured confounding: include pretreatment measurements of the mediator(s) and the outcome as baseline covariates. We explain why adjusting for pretreatment baseline measurements is a necessary first step toward eliminating confounding biases. We hope that such a practice can encourage explication, justification, and reflection of the causal assumptions underpinning mediation analysis toward improving the validity of causal inferences in psychology research.

Investigation of Active Ingredients Within Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression: A Randomized Optimization Trial

Importance

There is limited understanding of how complex evidence-based psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for depression work. Identifying active ingredients may help to make therapy more potent, brief, and scalable.

Objective

To test the individual main effects and interactions of 7 treatment components within internet-delivered CBT for depression to investigate its active ingredients.

Design, Setting, and Participants

This randomized optimization trial using a 32-condition, balanced, fractional factorial optimization experiment (IMPROVE-2) recruited adults with depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9] score ≥10) from internet advertising and the UK National Health Service Improving Access to Psychological Therapies service. Participants were randomized from July 7, 2015, to March 29, 2017, with follow-up for 6 months after treatment until December 29, 2017. Data were analyzed from July 2018 to April 2023.

Interventions

Participants were randomized with equal probability to 7 experimental factors within the internet CBT platform, each reflecting the presence vs absence of specific treatment components (activity scheduling, functional analysis, thought challenging, relaxation, concreteness training, absorption, and self-compassion training).

Main Outcomes and Measures

The primary outcome was depression symptoms (PHQ-9 score). Secondary outcomes include anxiety symptoms and work, home, and social functioning.

Results

Among 767 participants (mean age [SD] age, 38.5 [11.62] years; range, 18-76 years; 635 women [82.8%]), 506 (66%) completed the 6-month posttreatment follow-up. On average, participants receiving internet-delivered CBT had reduced depression (pre-to-posttreatment difference in PHQ-9 score, -7.79 [90% CI, -8.21 to -7.37]; 6-month follow-up difference in PHQ-9 score, -8.63 [90% CI, -9.04 to -8.22]). A baseline score-adjusted analysis of covariance model using effect-coded intervention variables (-1 or +1) found no main effect on depression symptoms for the presence vs absence of activity scheduling, functional analysis, thought challenging, relaxation, concreteness training, or self-compassion training (posttreatment: largest difference in PHQ-9 score [functional analysis], -0.09 [90% CI, -0.56 to 0.39]; 6-month follow-up: largest difference in PHQ-9 score [relaxation], -0.18 [90% CI, -0.61 to 0.25]). Only absorption training had a significant main effect on depressive symptoms at 6-month follow-up (posttreatment difference in PHQ-9 score, 0.21 [90% CI, -0.27 to 0.68]; 6-month follow-up difference in PHQ-9 score, -0.54, [90% CI, -0.97 to -0.11]).

Conclusions and Relevance

In this randomized optimization trial, all components of internet-delivered CBT except absorption training did not significantly reduce depression symptoms relative to their absence despite an overall average reduction in symptoms. The findings suggest that treatment benefit from internet-delivered CBT probably accrues from spontaneous remission, factors common to all CBT components (eg, structure, making active plans), and nonspecific therapy factors (eg, positive expectancy), with the possible exception of absorption focused on enhancing direct contact with positive reinforcers.

The Subjective Habitability & Acceptability Questionnaire (SHAQ): Development and Validation

OBJECTIVE

Describe the development and validation of the Subjective Habitability & Acceptability Questionnaire (SHAQ).

BACKGROUND

Habitat area size, layout, and design may impact individual and team behavioral health and performance (BHP) outcomes in operational environments. However, there are no standardized measures of these relationships.

METHOD

SHAQ is a modular survey consisting of two 6-item scales: BHP Outcomes (Performance of Individual Activities, Performance of Group Activities, Mood, Psychological Stress, Sleep, and Social Interactions) and Habitability Moderators (Privacy, Social Density, Efficiency, Control, Comfort, and Convenience). We collected SHAQ data from NASA's Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) crews (n = 19) in reference to multiple habitat areas (Sleep/Bedroom, Hygiene/Bathroom, Work/Office/Workshop, and Food Preparation/Kitchen/Galley) in the HERA operational environment, private hotel rooms, and individual home habitats.

RESULTS

SHAQ has high construct validity (single factor solutions, mean item factor loading = 0.760, mean % variance = 60.37), internal consistency and reliability (item mean α = 0.880, mean ω=0.894, mean ICC = 0.430), concurrent validity (mean item r with System Usability Scale = 0.42), and discriminant validity (e.g., significantly higher facilitation of group activities in HERA Work/Office/Workshop and Food Preparation/Kitchen/Galley areas vs. Hygiene/Bathroom and Sleep/Bedroom areas; significantly higher ratings of privacy, comfort, and convenience in hotel vs. HERA).

CONCLUSION

SHAQ is a reliable, valid, and sensitive measure of BHP impacts of habitat size and layout.

APPLICATION

SHAQ can be used to inform evidence-based recommendations and thresholds for habitat area size, layout, and design options to support individual and team BHP in operational environments.

COVID-19 pandemic stress, tolerance of uncertainty and well-being for persons with and without cancer

Stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic has implications for mental and physical well-being, but especially for persons with cancer. The stress mitigating role of tolerance of uncertainty (TU) was investigated in those with and without a cancer diagnosis.

DESIGN

155 persons with and 150 without a cancer diagnosis completed measures of pandemic stress and TU (mediating variable).

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Measures of emotional and physical well-being (WB) were the outcome variables.

RESULTS

The mediated, indirect effect of TU in the pandemic stress-emotional WB relationship was significant for the cancer group and the non-cancer group. However, the indirect effects involving TU in the pandemic stress-physical WB relationship was not significant for the cancer group, whereas TU fully mediated the pandemic stress-physical WB relationship for the non-cancer group.

CONCLUSIONS

Whereas TU was active as a mediator with emotional WB for both groups, it was ineffective as a mediator of the pandemic stress-physical WB relationship with the cancer group. Thus, the cancer group's physical WB was determined exclusively by pandemic stress. Stress reduction and enhancing TU may be critical for all people but for those with cancer decreasing pandemic stress would provide the most viable option for increasing physical well-being.

FINDOUT: Using Either SPSS Commands or Graphical User Interface to Identify Influential Cases in Structural Equation Modeling in AMOS

The results in a structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis can be influenced by just a few observations, called influential cases. Tools have been developed for users of R to identify them. However, similar tools are not available for AMOS, which is also a popular SEM software package. We introduce the FINDOUT toolset, a group of SPSS extension commands, and an AMOS plugin, to identify influential cases and examine how these cases influence the results. The SPSS commands can be used either as syntax commands or as custom dialogs from pull-down menus, and the AMOS plugin can be run from AMOS pull-down menu. We believe these tools can help researchers to examine the robustness of their findings to influential cases.

Development and Evaluation of a Pragmatic Measure of Adherence to Dialectical Behavior Therapy: The DBT Adherence Checklist for Individual Therapy

This paper presents two studies conducted to develop and evaluate a new pragmatic measure of therapist adherence to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): the DBT Adherence Checklist for Individual Therapy (DBT AC-I). Study 1 used item response analysis to select items from the gold standard DBT Adherence Coding Scale (DBT ACS) using archival data from 1271 DBT sessions. Items were then iteratively refined based on feedback from 33 target end-users to ensure relevance, usability, and understandability. Study 2 examined the psychometric properties of the DBT AC-I as a therapist self-report and observer-rated measure in 100 sessions from 50 therapist-client dyads, while also evaluating predictors of therapist accuracy in self-rated adherence. When used as a therapist self-report measure, concordance between therapist and observer ratings was at least moderate (AC1 ≥ 0.41) for all DBT AC-I items but overall concordance (ICC = 0.09) as well as convergent (r = 0.05) and criterion validity (AUC = 0.54) with the DBT ACS were poor. Higher therapist accuracy was predicted by greater DBT knowledge and adherence as well as more severe client suicidal ideation. When used by trained observers, the DBT AC-I had excellent interrater reliability (ICC = 0.93), convergent validity (r = 0.90), and criterion validity (AUC = 0.94). While therapists' self-rated adherence on the DBT AC-I should not be assumed to reflect their actual adherence, some therapists may self-rate accurately. The DBT AC-I offers an effective and relatively efficient method of evaluating adherence to DBT when used by trained observers.

Postnatal cerebral hemodynamics in infants with severe congenital heart disease: a scoping review

Patients with severe congenital heart disease (CHD) are at risk for impaired neurodevelopment. Cerebral blood supply may be diminished by congenital anomalies of cardiovascular anatomy and myocardial function. The aim of this scoping review was to summarize the current knowledge on cerebral hemodynamics in infants with severe CHD. A scoping review was performed. Five databases were searched for articles published from 01/1990 to 02/2022 containing information on cerebral hemodynamics assessed by neuroimaging methods in patients with severe CHD within their first year of life. A total of 1488 publications were identified, of which 26 were included. Half of the studies used Doppler ultrasound, and half used magnetic resonance imaging techniques. Studies focused on preoperative findings of cerebral hemodynamics, effects of surgical and conservative interventions, as well as on associations between cerebral hemodynamics and brain morphology or neurodevelopment. Cerebral perfusion was most severely affected in patients with single ventricle and other cyanotic disease. Neuroimaging methods provide a large variety of information on cerebral hemodynamics. Nevertheless, small and heterogeneous cohorts complicate this field of research. Further studies are needed to improve our understanding of the link between CHD and altered cerebral hemodynamics to optimize neuroprotection strategies. IMPACT: Postnatal cerebral hemodynamics are altered in infants with congenital heart disease (CHD) as compared to healthy controls, especially in most severe types such as single ventricle or other cyanotic CHD. Associations of these alterations with brain volume and maturation reveal their clinical relevance. Research in this area is limited due to the rarity and heterogeneity of diagnoses. Furthermore, longitudinal studies have rarely been conducted. Further effort is needed to better understand the deviation from physiological cerebral perfusion and its consequences in patients with CHD to optimize neuroprotection strategies.

Emotional Dynamics in Fibromyalgia: Pain, Fatigue, and Stress Moderate Momentary Associations Between Positive and Negative Emotions

Affective disruptions, particularly deficits in positive affect, are characteristic of fibromyalgia (FM). The Dynamic Model of Affect provides some explanations of affective disruptions in FM, suggesting that the inverse association between positive and negative emotions is stronger when individuals with FM are under greater stress than usual. However, our understanding of the types of stressors and negative emotions that contribute to these affective dynamics is limited. Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods, 50 adults who met the FM survey diagnostic criteria rated their momentary pain, stress, fatigue, negative emotions (depression, anger, and anxiety), and positive emotions 5X/day for eight days using a smartphone application. Results of multilevel modeling indicate that, consistent with the Dynamic Model of Affect, there was a stronger inverse association between positive emotion and negative emotions during times of greater pain, stress, and fatigue. Importantly, this pattern was specific to depression and anger, and was not present for anxiety. These findings suggest that fluctuations in fatigue and stress may be just as important or more important than fluctuations in pain when understanding the emotional dynamics in FM. In addition, having a more nuanced understanding of the role that different negative emotions play may be similarly important to understanding emotional dynamics in FM. PERSPECTIVE: This article presents new findings on the emotional dynamics in FM during times of increased pain, fatigue, and stress. Findings highlight the need for clinicians to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of fatigue, stress, and anger in addition to more routinely assessed depression and pain when working with individuals with FM.
