Abstract
Quercetin (Quer) is a natural flavonoid known for its inhibitory effects against various cancers. However, the mechanism by which Quer inhibits gastric cancer (GC) has not yet been fully elucidated. Ferroptosis, a mode of programmed cell death resulting from lipid peroxidation, is regulated by abnormalities in the antioxidant system and iron metabolism. Through flow cytometry and other detection methods, we found that Quer elevated lipid peroxidation levels in GC cells. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed an increase in ferroptosis in Quer-induced GC. We demonstrated that Quer inhibits SLC1A5 expression. Molecular docking revealed Quer's binding to SLC1A5 at SER-343, SER-345, ILE-423, and THR-460 residues. Using immunofluorescence and other experiments, we found that Quer altered the intracellular ROS levels, antioxidant system protein expression levels, and iron content. Mechanistically, Quer binds to SLC1A5, inhibiting the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2), resulting in decreased xCT/GPX4 expression. Quer/SLC1A5 signaling activated p-Camk2, leading to upregulated p-DRP1 and enhanced ROS release. Additionally, Quer increased the intracellular iron content by inhibiting SLC1A5. These three changes collectively led to ferroptosis in GC cells. In conclusion, Quer targets SLC1A5 in GC cells, inhibiting the NRF2/xCT pathway, activating the p-Camk2/p-DRP1 pathway, and accelerating iron deposition. Ultimately, Quer promotes ferroptosis in GC cells, inhibiting GC progression. Overall, our study reveals that Quer can potentially impede GC progression by targeting SLC1A5, offering novel therapeutic avenues through the modulation of ferroptosis and iron homeostasis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study, based on Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data, aimed to report the long-term trend in mortality rates caused by risk factors for esophageal cancer (EC) in China from 1990 to 2019 and predict the burden of EC mortality caused by these risk factors over the next 15 years. METHODS We examined six risk factors that influenced EC mortality rates in China and their respective rankings. Furthermore, we analyzed the number of deaths and crude mortality rates (CMR) caused by these risk factors for both sexes and different age groups. Age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and the number of deaths across all age groups were also analyzed. Finally, we utilized the Bayesian Age-Period-Cohort (BAPC) model to predict the trends in ASMR burden caused by these risk factors in the future. RESULTS From 1990 to 2019, the percentage changes in ASMR for EC caused by the six risk factors in China were as follows: smoking (- 33.4%), alcohol consumption (- 23.0%), low fruit intake (- 73.6%), low vegetable intake (- 96.0%), high Body Mass Index (BMI) (25.1%), and tobacco chewing (- 32.8%). In 2019, the top three risk factors contributing to EC ASMR in China were smoking, alcohol consumption, and high BMI. Overall, the ASMR for EC in China fluctuated and declined from 1990 to 2019. The most common risk factors for males were smoking and alcohol consumption, while low fruit intake and high BMI were the most common risk factors for females. The impact of these risk factors on EC mortality increased with age, except for the elderly population. BAPC analysis indicated that the influence of these risk factors on ASMR was expected to remain relatively stable in the next 15 years, suggesting a continued significant burden of EC. CONCLUSION The projected burden of EC mortality in China was expected to continue increasing steadily over the next 15 years, highlighting the pressing need for disease control measures. To alleviate this burden, targeted prevention and control policies addressing risk factors for EC such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and high BMI are necessary.

Abstract
Background Cancer is a serious threat to people's lives and health, killing millions of people every year. Here, we performed a bibliometric analysis of tumor N6-methyladenosine methylation data between 2001 and 2022 to understand research trends and potential future directions. Methods A total of 890 papers published in the Web of Science core collection database between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2022 were analyzed. Bibliometric analysis was performed using VOSviewer software to explore citations, co-authorship, co-citations, and co-occurrence. Results Although few papers were published before 2018, there was a rapid increase in publications after 2018. The People's Republic of China published 810 papers with 16,957 citations, both ranking first in the word. Sun Yat Sen University had the highest number of citations and published articles (67 published papers and 2702 citations), indicative of its active collaborative research status. Wang Xiao was the most co-cited author with 546 co-citations. Huang Yufei and Meng Jia ranked first with a link strength of 22, making them the most active collaborative authors. Frontiers in Oncology and Nature were the most active and co-cited journals, with 57 papers and 1953 co-citations, respectively. Studies of tumor N6-methyladenosine methylation can be divided into three categories: "tumor metabolism", "tumor bioinformatics and immunity", and "tumor progression". Conclusions This study systematically summarized the research on tumor N6-methyladenosine methylation during the past 20 years and suggested potential ways to explore its biomarkers and immunotherapy in the future.

Abstract
Background Gastric cancer (GC) is a malignancy known for its high fatality rate. Disulfidptosis, a potentially innovative therapeutic strategy for cancer treatment, has been proposed. Nevertheless, the specific involvement of disulfidptosis in the context of GC remains uncertain. Methods The mRNA expression profiles were obtained from the TCGA and GEO databases. Univariate and LASSO Cox regression analyses were employed to identify differentially expressed genes and develop a risk model for disulfidptosis-related genes. The performance of the model was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier curve, ROC curve, and nomogram. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were conducted to determine if the risk model could serve as an independent prognostic factor. The biological function of the identified genes was assessed through GO, KEGG, and GSEA analyses. The prediction of drug response was conducted employing the package "pRRophetic". Furthermore, gene expression was determined using qRT-PCR. Results An eight-gene signature were identified and utilized to categorize patients into low- and high-risk groups. Survival, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and Cox analyses provided clarification that these eight hub genes served as a favorable independent prognostic factor for patients with GC. A nomogram was constructed by integrating clinical parameters with the risk signatures, demonstrating high precision in predicting 1-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates. Additionally, drug sensitivity was different in the high-risk and low-risk groups, and the expression of three genes was verified by qRT-PCR. Conclusion The prognostic risk model developed in this study demonstrates the potential to accurately forecast the prognosis of patients with GC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The development and progression of gastric cancer (GC) are closely linked to the nutritional status of patients. Although immunotherapy has been demonstrated to be clinically effective, the relationships of sarcopenia and myosteatosis with the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in patients with gastric cancer remain to be characterized. AIM To assess the effects of sarcopenia and myosteatosis on the clinical outcomes of patients with GC undergoing treatment with an ICI. METHODS We performed a retrospective study of patients who were undergoing immunotherapy for GC. For the evaluation of sarcopenia, the optimal cut-off value for the skeletal muscle index was established using receiver operating characteristic analysis of data obtained from pre-treatment computed tomography images at the L3 vertebral level. Myosteatosis was defined using the mean skeletal muscle density (SMD), with a threshold value of < 41 Hounsfield units (HU) for patients with a body mass index (BMI) < 25 kg/m² and < 33 HU for those with a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m². The log-rank test was used to compare progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS), and a Cox proportional hazard model was used to identify prognostic factors. Nomograms were developed to predict the PFS and OS of patients on the basis of the results of multivariate analyses. RESULTS We studied 115 patients who were undergoing ICI therapy for GC, of whom 27.4% had sarcopenia and 29.8% had myosteatosis. Patients with sarcopenia or myosteatosis had significantly shorter PFS and OS than those without these conditions. Furthermore, both sarcopenia and myosteatosis were found to be independent predictors of PFS and OS in patients with GC administering an ICI. The prediction models created for PFS and OS were associated with C-indexes of 0.758 and 0.781, respectively. CONCLUSION The presence of sarcopenia or myosteatosis is a reliable predictor of the clinical outcomes of patients with GC who are undergoing treatment with an ICI.

Abstract
Introduction Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among female worldwide. Early detection and intervention are essential. This study aims to construct an early predictive warning model for cervical cancer and precancerous lesions utilizing clinical data and simple nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Methods Clinical data and germline SNPs were collected from 472 participants. Univariate logistic regression, least absolute shrinkage selection operator (LASSO), and stepwise regression were performed to screen variables. Logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), decision tree (DT), extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost) and neural network(NN) were applied to establish models. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to compare the models' efficiencies. The performance of models was validated using decision curve analysis (DCA). Results The LR model, which included 6 SNPs and 2 clinical variables as independent risk factors for cervical carcinogenesis, was ultimately chosen as the most optimal model. The DCA showed that the LR model had a good clinical application. Discussion The predictive model effectively foresees cervical cancer risk using clinical and SNP data, aiding in planning timely interventions. It provides a transparent tool for refining clinical decisions in cervical cancer management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insomnia is a common health problem among cancer patients, which is not only a physical problem but also a psychological problem. Sleep plays an important role in the mental and somatic rehabilitation of cancer patients, and the sleep beliefs and attitudes of cancer patients are key factors in improving their sleep situation and quality of life. The aim of this study was to translate the Cancer-Related Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes about Sleep (C-DBAS-14) scale into Chinese and to validate its reliability and validity in cancer patients. METHOD The C-DBAS-14 scale was translated into Chinese using the backward and forward translation procedure. The reliability of the scale was measured by internal consistency, split-half reliability and retest reliability. The validity of the scale was assessed through the content validity indicators, exploratory factor analysis and validation factor analysis. RESULT The Cronbach's ɑ coefficient of the Chinese version of the C-DBAS-14 was 0.932 while the McDonald's omega coefficient (ω t) was 0.934. The split-half reliability coefficient was 0.908, and the test-retest reliability was 0.857. The four-factor model was obtained using exploratory factor analysis, explaining 72.7% of the variance, with each item loading greater than 0.4 on the common factor. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis revealed that all indicators of model fit were within an acceptable range, indicating a well-fitting model. CONCLUSION The Chinese version of the C-DBAS-14 has good reliability and validity among cancer patients. It can be used to measure the sleep beliefs and attitudes of Chinese cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The number and proportion of the elderly population have been continuously increasing in China, leading to the elevated prevalence of chronic diseases and multimorbidity, which ultimately brings heavy burden to society and families. Meanwhile, the status of multimorbidity tends to be more complex in elderly inpatients than community population. In view of the above concerns, this study was designed to investigate the health status of elderly inpatients by analyzing clinical data in Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) General Hospital from 2008 to 2019, including the constitution of common diseases, comorbidities, the status of multimorbidity, in-hospital death and polypharmacy among elderly inpatients, so as to better understand the diseases spectrum and multimorbidity of elderly inpatients and also to provide supporting evidence for targeted management of chronic diseases in the elderly. METHODS A clinical inpatients database was set up by collecting medical records of elderly inpatients from 2008 to 2019 in Chinese PLA General Hospital, focusing on diseases spectrum and characteristics of elderly inpatients. In this study, we collected data of inpatients aged ≥ 65 years old, and further analyzed the constitution of diseases, multimorbidity rates and mortality causes in the past decade. In addition, the prescriptions were also analyzed to investigate the status of polypharmacy in elderly inpatients. RESULTS A total of 210,169 elderly patients were hospitalized from January 1st, 2008 to December 31st, 2019. The corresponding number of hospitalizations was 290,833. The average age of the study population was 72.67 years old. Of the total population, 73,493 elderly patients were re-admitted within one year, with the re-hospitalization rate of 25.27%. Malignant tumor, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus and cerebrovascular disease were the top 5 diseases. Among the study population, the number of patients with two or more long-term health conditions was 267,259, accounting for 91.89%, with an average of 4.68 diseases. In addition, the average number of medications taken by the study population was 5.4, among which, the proportion of patients taking more than 5 types of medications accounted for 55.42%. CONCLUSIONS By analyzing the constitution of diseases and multimorbidity, we found that multimorbidity has turned out to be a prominent problem in elderly inpatients, greatly affecting the process of healthy aging and increasing the burden on families and society. Therefore, multidisciplinary treatment should be strengthened to make reasonable preventive and therapeutic strategies to improve the life quality of the elderly. Meanwhile, more attention should be paid to reasonable medications for elderly patients with multimorbidity to avoid preventable side effects caused by irrational medication therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical Cancer (CC), a leading cause of female mortality worldwide, demonstrates a direct association with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. However, not all CC patients exhibit HPV infection, suggesting additional predisposing factors. Recently, disturbances in the oxidant-antioxidant balance have been implicated in CC development. This study explores the impact of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the survival and antioxidant capacity of HeLa cells, aiming to contribute to novel CC therapy approaches. METHODS AND RESULTS Synthesized and characterized AuNPs (25.5 nm, uniform distribution according to the DLS analysis) were administered to HeLa cells at varying concentrations. After 24 h, cell viability was assessed using the (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2 H-tetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay. Real-time PCR measured expression levels of apoptosis-related genes (BCL2 associated X (BAX) and p53). Catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities, key antioxidant enzymes, were also evaluated post-AuNP treatment. AuNPs dose-dependently reduced HeLa cell viability, with an IC50 value of 113 µg/ml. BAX gene expression significantly increased, indicating pro-apoptotic effects. Moreover, enzyme activities significantly rose under AuNP influence. CONCLUSIONS AuNPs demonstrated the potential to induce HeLa cell death by upregulating pro-apoptotic BAX gene expression and altering antioxidant system enzyme activities. These findings underscore the promise of AuNPs as a therapeutic avenue for CC, emphasizing their impact on crucial cellular processes involved in cancer progression.

Abstract
Adolescents and young adults are the driving force of social development, and the prevalence of acute viral hepatitis (AVH) in this population cannot be ignored. At present, there are few studies on the disease burden of AVH in this age group, and most studies focus on chronic liver disease. In this study, we identified global trends in the burden of AVH among adolescents and young adults (15-29) to help policymakers implement precise disease interventions. In this observational study of disease trends, we collected data exclusively from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 study. This study examined the trends in the prevalence, incidence and mortality of AVH among adolescents and young adults in 21 regions of the world from 2009 to 2019. Age-specific disease trends were analysed with a joinpoint regression model. The overall global disease burden of AVH declined. The prevalence rate per 100,000 people decreased from 316.13 in 2009 to 198.79 in 2019, the incidence rate decreased from 3245.52 in 2009 to 2091.93 in 2019, and the death rate decreased from 0.87 in 2009 to 0.43 in 2019. During the study period, the prevalence of hepatitis B virtues (HBV) in the young population decreased, but the downward trend of other types of hepatitis other than HBV was not obvious, especially HAV, which even showed an upward trend. Among adolescents and young adults aged 15-29 years, Western Saharan Africa had the highest prevalence of AVH in 2019. There were significant differences in mortality rates among different age groups; 20-24 was the age group with the highest mortality rate from 2009 to 2019, followed by the 15-19 and 25-29 age groups. Although the overall global AVH disease burden declined, some causes of AVH, such as HAV, showed an upward trend during the study period. In addition, the prevalence of AVH among adolescents and young adults in Asia and Africa was higher than that in other parts of the world and warrants more attention. Finally, more research should be conducted on mortality in the 20-24 age group.

Abstract
Cellular metabolism is the fundamental process by which cells maintain growth and self-renewal. It produces energy, furnishes raw materials, and intermediates for biomolecule synthesis, and modulates enzyme activity to sustain normal cellular functions. Cellular metabolism is the foundation of cellular life processes and plays a regulatory role in various biological functions, including programmed cell death. Ferroptosis is a recently discovered form of iron-dependent programmed cell death. The inhibition of ferroptosis plays a crucial role in tumorigenesis and tumor progression. However, the role of cellular metabolism, particularly glucose and amino acid metabolism, in cancer ferroptosis is not well understood. Here, we reviewed glucose, lipid, amino acid, iron and selenium metabolism involvement in cancer cell ferroptosis to elucidate the impact of different metabolic pathways on this process. Additionally, we provided a detailed overview of agents used to induce cancer ferroptosis. We explained that the metabolism of tumor cells plays a crucial role in maintaining intracellular redox homeostasis and that disrupting the normal metabolic processes in these cells renders them more susceptible to iron-induced cell death, resulting in enhanced tumor cell killing. The combination of ferroptosis inducers and cellular metabolism inhibitors may be a novel approach to future cancer therapy and an important strategy to advance the development of treatments.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE As a "silent killer" that threatens women's lives and health, ovarian cancer (OC) has the clinical characteristics of being difficult to detect, difficult to treat, and high recurrence. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can be utilized as a long-term complementary and alternative therapy since it has shown benefits in alleviating clinical symptoms of OC, decreasing toxic side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, as well as enhancing patients' quality of life. AIM OF THE REVIEW This paper reviews how TCM contributes to the apoptosis of OC cells through signaling pathways, including active constituents, extracts, and herbal formulas, with the aim of providing a basis for the development and clinical application of therapeutic strategies for TCM in OC. METHODS The search was conducted from scientific databases PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and SinoMed databases aiming to elucidate the apoptosis signaling pathways in OC cells by TCM. The articles were searched by the keywords "ovarian cancer", "apoptosis", "signaling pathway", "traditional Chinese medicine", "Chinese herbal monomer", "Chinese herbal extract", and "herbal formula". The search was conducted from January 2013 to June 2023. A total of 97 potentially relevant articles were included, including 93 articles on Chinese medicine active constituents or extracts and 4 articles on Chinese herbal compound prescriptions. RESULTS TCM can induce apoptosis in OC cells by regulating signaling pathways with obvious advantages, including STAT3, PI3K/AKT, Wnt/β-catenin, MAPK, NF-κB, Nrf2, HIF-1α, Fas/Fas L signaling pathway, etc. CONCLUSION: Chinese medicine can induce apoptosis in OC cells through multiple pathways, targets, and routes. TCM has special advantages for treating OC, providing more reasonable evidence for the research and development of new apoptosis inducers.

Abstract
The increasing cancer burden calls for reliably assessed changes in the hospitalizations for tumors over time and space in China. This study evaluated trends in hospitalization rate, in-hospital mortality, length of stay (LOS), and medical costs for malignant and benign neoplasms. Data were derived from China Health Statistical Yearbooks from 2004 to 2020. Temporal trends in hospitalization rates and in-hospital mortality rates were assessed through the Cochran-Armitage Test. We used the linear model with continuous variables to test for the trend. The malignant neoplasm hospitalization rate increased from 1.1‰ to 5.8‰ and the benign neoplasm increased from 1.0‰ to 2.0‰. The in-hospital mortality rate due to malignant neoplasm and benign neoplasm decreased from 5.11 to 2.87% (P for trend < 0.001) and 0.14-0.01% (P for trend < 0.001), respectively. Among all patients hospitalized with malignant neoplasm, the average cost per hospitalization significantly increased during the study period (P for trend < 0.001), adjusted for the Consumer Price Index. However, the average LOS gradually decreased (P for trend < 0.001). In line with the trend of malignant neoplasm, the average cost per hospitalization increased significantly among all patients hospitalized for benign neoplasm (P for trend < 0.001), and the average LOS showed a steady downward trend (P for trend < 0.001). We found upward trends in hospitalization rates, and medical costs in neoplasms. By contrast, substantial decreases in in-hospital mortality and LOS. The hospitalization rate gap between urban and rural areas is narrowed.

Abstract
Background We analysed the cancer burden among elderly Chinese people over the age of 55 years and compared them to USA and Western Europe to explore the cancer model in China. Methods We retrieved data on 29 cancers with 34 risk factors from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease database to evaluate the cancer burden in Chinese elderly individuals aged 55 years and older. We then used the age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardised death rate (ASDR), age-standardised disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rate, and average annual percentage change (AAPC) to compare the characteristics and change trend of cancers among China, USA, and Western Europe. Results In 2019, the number of incident cases of 29 cancers among people aged 55 years and above in China increased more than 3-fold compared to 1990, while the number of deaths and DALYs approximately doubled. We also found that the cancer population in China was ageing; meanwhile, the cancer burden became significantly higher for men than for women, and the gap between men and women had widened. Cancers with the highest cancer DALYs were lung cancer (13 444 500; 95% uncertainty interval (UI) = 11 307 100, 15 853 700), stomach cancer (7 303 900; 95% UI = 6 094 600, 8 586 500), oesophageal cancer (4 633 500; 95% UI = 3 642 500, 5 601 200), colon and rectum cancer (4 386 500; 95% UI = 3 769 500, 5 067 200), liver cancer (2 915 100, 95% UI = 2 456 300, 3 463 900), and pancreatic cancer (2 028 400; 95% UI = 1 725 000, 2 354 900). Compared with 1990, the DALY rate and incidence rate of stomach cancer, oesophageal cancer, and liver cancer had markedly decreased. The DALY rate and incidence rate of lung, colon, rectum, and pancreatic cancer had increased significantly, as did the incidence rate of breast cancer in women. Smoking and diet were the top two cancer risk factors, and the impact of ambient particulate matter pollution on cancer increased each year. The overall 29 cancers age-standardised DALY rate and ASDR in China, USA, and Western Europe were similar, and all showed downward trend in the past 30 years. Compared with the USA and Western Europe, the age-standardised DALY rate of liver, nasopharyngeal, oesophageal, stomach, and cervical cancers in China was more prominent. The age-standardised DALY rate of lung cancer and colon and rectum cancer decreased annually in Western Europe and the USA, but increased in China. Conclusions Over the past 30 years, China had made progress in controlling stomach, oesophageal, and liver cancer. However, lung, colon, rectum, pancreatic, and breast cancers had become more prevalent, having risen alongside economic development. The risks of smoking and dietary were major issues that need to be addressed urgently. The cancer situation in China remains serious; future cancer prevention efforts need to balance economic development with people's physical health, identify key groups, improve the health environment of residents and guide them to live a healthy life, and expand the scope of cancer screening.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDThe tumor immune microenvironment can provide prognostic and therapeutic information. We aimed to develop noninvasive imaging biomarkers from computed tomography (CT) for comprehensive evaluation of immune context and investigate their associations with prognosis and immunotherapy response in gastric cancer (GC).METHODSThis study involved 2,600 patients with GC from 9 independent cohorts. We developed and validated 2 CT imaging biomarkers (lymphoid radiomics score [LRS] and myeloid radiomics score [MRS]) for evaluating the IHC-derived lymphoid and myeloid immune context respectively, and integrated them into a combined imaging biomarker [LRS/MRS: low(-) or high(+)] with 4 radiomics immune subtypes: 1 (-/-), 2 (+/-), 3 (-/+), and 4 (+/+). We further evaluated the imaging biomarkers' predictive values on prognosis and immunotherapy response.RESULTSThe developed imaging biomarkers (LRS and MRS) had a high accuracy in predicting lymphoid (AUC range: 0.765-0.773) and myeloid (AUC range: 0.736-0.750) immune context. Further, similar to the IHC-derived immune context, 2 imaging biomarkers (HR range: 0.240-0.761 for LRS; 1.301-4.012 for MRS) and the combined biomarker were independent predictors for disease-free and overall survival in the training and all validation cohorts (all P < 0.05). Additionally, patients with high LRS or low MRS may benefit more from immunotherapy (P < 0.001). Further, a highly heterogeneous outcome on objective response rate was observed in 4 imaging subtypes: 1 (-/-) with 27.3%, 2 (+/-) with 53.3%, 3 (-/+) with 10.2%, and 4 (+/+) with 30.0% (P < 0.0001).CONCLUSIONThe noninvasive imaging biomarkers could accurately evaluate the immune context and provide information regarding prognosis and immunotherapy for GC.

Abstract
N4-acetylcytidine (ac4C) is a highly conserved chemical modification widely found in eukaryotic and prokaryotic RNA, such as tRNA, rRNA, and mRNA. This modification is significantly associated with various human diseases, especially cancer, and its formation depends on the catalytic activity of N-acetyltransferase 10 (NAT10), the only known protein that produces ac4C. This review discusses the detection techniques and regulatory mechanisms of ac4C and summarizes ac4C correlation with tumor occurrence, development, prognosis, and drug therapy. It also comments on a new biomarker for early tumor diagnosis and prognosis prediction and a new target for tumor therapy. Video Abstract.

Abstract
Purpose The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains a global public health concern. Many people have been forced to change their lifestyles, which has led to psychological and sleep problem. This study aims to investigate the psychological health problems and factors among patients in the Fangcang Shelter Hospital (FSH) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients and Methods A Cross-Sectional survey was conducted to investigate the sleep, anxiety, depression and stress disorders of 2628 asymptomatic and mild patients treated in FSH of Zhengzhou, Henan Province, from 30 October to 6 December 2022, by scanning a WeChat two-dimensional code. Sociodemographic data and influencing factors in FSH were collected, Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) were administered. Descriptive statistics, t-tests or analysis of variance, Spearman or Pearson correlation analysis, and multivariate regression analysis were used to explore the relationships between different variables and their impact on psychological health indicators. Results The proportions of patients with insomnia, depressive disorder, anxiety, and stress disorders were 33.49%, 35.80%, 31.74%, and 43.57%, respectively. Spearman correlation analysis demonstrated that factors such as gender, higher education level, positive nucleic acid test results, longer illness duration, underlying diseases, and extended electronic device use were associated with elevated psychological distress scores. Notably, within FSH, extended exposure to light, a noisy environment, and sleep schedule management significantly impacted the prevalence of insomnia, depression, anxiety, and stress disorders (p<0.01). Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis identified higher education level, light exposure, noisy environment, sleep management, and electronic device usage as the primary risk factors for psychological distress. Conclusion Patients in FSH face psychological distress influenced by sociodemographic factors, environment, and lifestyle, highlighting the need for integrated psychological support in healthcare, particularly in temporary medical facilities during crises.

Abstract
HOXC6 plays an essential part of the carcinogenesis of solid tumors, but its functional relevance within the immune contexture in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) is still uncertain. We intended to investigate the predictive value of HOXC6 expression for survival outcomes and its correlation with immune contexture in CRC patients by utilizing the Cancer Genome Atlas database (n = 619). Validation was performed in cohorts from Zhongshan Hospital (n = 200) and Shanghai Cancer Center (n = 300). Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was utilized to compare the levels of immunocytes infiltrating the tumor between the groups with high and low expression of HOXC6. Elevated levels of HOXC6 expression in CRC tissues were linked to malignant progression and poor prognosis. HOXC6 as a risk factor for survival of CRC patients was confirmed. Receiver operating characteristic analysis confirmed its diagnostic value, and a reliable prognostic nomogram was constructed. KEGG analysis and GSEA showed that HOXC6 participated in immune regulation, and its expression was tightly linked to the abundance of infiltrating immunocytes. HOXC6 was upregulated in patients diagnosed with CRC within the two cohorts, and high HOXC6 levels were correlated with a worse prognosis. The high-HOXC6 expression group showed increased infiltration of Treg cells, CD68+ macrophages, CD66b+ neutrophils, and CD8+ T-cells and elevated levels of PD-L1 and PD-1, but decreased levels of granzyme B and perforin. These findings suggest that HOXC6 abundance in patients with CRC determines a poor prognosis, promotes an immunoevasive environment, and directs CD8+ T-cell dysfunction. HOXC6 is expected to become a prospective biomarker for the outcome of CRC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with hematological malignancies received multiple hypodermic injections of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. Procedural pain is one of the most common iatrogenic causes of pain in patients with hematological malignancies. It is also identified as the most commonly occurring problem in clinical care in the Department of Hematology and Oncology at Shenzhen University General Hospital. However, providing immediate relief from pain induced by hypodermic injection of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor remains a major challenge. This trial aims to evaluate the safety and analgesic efficacy of a fixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture for patients with hematological malignancies and experiencing procedural pain caused by hypodermic injection of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in the department. METHODS The nitrous oxide/oxygen study is a single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving patients with hematological malignancies who require hypodermic injections of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor for treatment. This trial was conducted in the Hematology and Oncology Department of Shenzhen University General Hospital. A total of 54 eligible patients were randomly allocated to either the fixed nitrous oxide/oxygen mixture group (n = 36) or the oxygen group (n = 18). Neither the investigators nor the patients known about the randomization list and the nature of the gas mixture in each cylinder. Outcomes were monitored at the baseline (T0), immediately after hypodermic injection of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (T1), and 5 min after hypodermic injection of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (T2) for each group. The primary outcome measure was the score in the numerical rating scale corresponding to the highest level of pain experienced during hypodermic injection of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. Secondary outcomes included the fear of pain, anxiety score, four physiological parameters, adverse effects, total time of gas administration, satisfaction from both patients and nurses, and the acceptance of the patients. DISCUSSION This study focused on the safety and analgesic efficacy during hypodermic injection of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor procedure. Data on the feasibility and safety of nitrous oxide/oxygen therapy was provided if proven beneficial to patients with hematological malignancies during hypodermic injection of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and widely administered to patients with procedural pain in the department. Abstract
PURPOSE Cough is one of the most common symptoms after lung cancer surgery, which seriously affects the quality of life. Little research has been conducted on patient's experiences of cough following lung surgery. This study aimed to elucidate the experience of coughing after lung cancer surgery from the patient's perspective regarding symptoms and their impacts on daily life, as well as triggers and dealing strategies. METHODS Between June 2023 and July 2023, we conducted semi-structured interviews with patients from outpatient clinics of two hospitals who were pathologically diagnosed with lung cancer and experienced cough after surgery through convenience sampling. The interview recordings were transcribed and analyzed by two researchers. The traditional content analysis and thematic analysis were used to identify the common codes, subthemes, and themes. RESULTS A total of 28 participants were interviewed. The mean age of the participants was 55.21 years (range: 36-75 years), and 21 participants were female. Most patients (75%) were interviewed within 6 months of surgery. We identified five themes (accompanying symptoms, incentives, effects, solution, and information sources) and 12 subthemes (local symptoms, systemic symptoms, personal factors, external factors, emotion, relationship with others, reduced quality of life, medical measures, nonmedical measures, no measures, relatives and friends, and the Internet). Patients with lung cancer may experience various cough symptoms after surgery, which a variety of internal and external factors can trigger. The coughing imposes a double burden on the physical and psychological due to the negative emotions it provokes. CONCLUSION We generated a concept framework of cough after lung cancer surgery, providing a basis for further development of measurement tools from the patients' perspective. The lack of knowledge related to coughing highlights the need for adequate and timely health education and professional medical care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the constitutively activated Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway plays vital roles in gastric cancer (GC) progression, few Wnt inhibitors are approved for clinical use. Additionally, the clinical significance of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in GC intraperitoneal dissemination (IPD) remains elusive. Here, we investigated the function and therapeutic potential of Wnt-transactivated lncRNA, colon cancer-associated transcript 5 (CCAT5), in GC metastasis. METHODS LncRNA-sequencing assay was performed to document abundance changes of lncRNAs induced by Wnt family member 3A (Wnt3a) and degradation-resistant β-catenin (S33Y mutated) in ascites-derived GC cells with low Wnt activity. Luciferase reporter, Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP)-re-ChIP assays were performed to determine how CCAT5 was transcribed. The clinical significance of CCAT5 was examined in 2 cohorts of GC patients. The biological function of CCAT5 was investigated through gain- and loss-of-function studies. The molecular mechanism was explored through RNA-sequencing, mass spectrometry, and CRISPR/Cas9-knocknout system. The therapeutic potential of CCAT5 was examined through RNAi-based cell xenograft model and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model of IPD. RESULTS We identified a novel Wnt-regulated lncRNA, CCAT5, which was transactivated by the β-catenin/transcription factor 3 (TCF3) complex. CCAT5 was significantly upregulated in GC and predicted poor prognosis. Functional studies confirmed the promotive role of CCAT5 in GC growth and metastasis. Mechanistically, CCAT5 bound to the C-end domain of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and blocks Src homology 2 domain-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 1 (SHP-1)-mediated STAT3Y705 dephosphorylation, leading to STAT3 nuclear entry and transactivation, thus accelerating GC progression. Furthermore, we demonstrated that both Wnt3a and β-catenin acted as activator of STAT3 signaling pathway, and the interplay between CCAT5 and STAT3 was functionally essential for Wnt-drived STAT3 signaling and tumor evolution. Finally, we revealed in vivo si-CCAT5 selectively attenuated growth and metastasis of Wnthigh GC, but not Wntlow GC. The combination of si-CCAT5 and oxaliplatin displayed obvious synergistic therapeutic effects on Wnthigh PDX mice. CONCLUSIONS We identified a novel Wnt-transactivated lncRNA, CCAT5. Our study revealed a mechanism of STAT3 signaling regulation via canonical Wnt signaling and the functional significance of CCAT5 as critical mediator. We provided conceptual advance that lncRNAs serve as therapeutic targets reversing GC progression.

Abstract
AIM Moral courage among healthcare workers has been extensively studied. However, few studies have been conducted on oncology specialist nurses, who frequently encounter complex moral situations. This study aimed to describe the current situation regarding moral courage and explored its influence on oncology specialist nurses in China. DESIGN This was an exploratory, descriptive study. METHODS A convenience sample of 390 nurses was conducted from 15 hospitals in Sichuan Province, China, between March and May 2023. Participants were assessed using the Moral Distress Scale-Revised, Nurses' Moral Courage Scale and the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire. RESULTS The results demonstrated that moral courage was negatively associated with moral distress, and positively associated with moral sensitivity. Having a master's degree or above, an intermediate title or senior title, medical ethics training, moral distress or moral sensitivity contributed to explaining 54.1% of the variance in moral courage. CONCLUSIONS Moral courage was associated with several factors. Developing clinical intervention strategies and effective teaching methods will be critical for improving moral courage. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Surgery is the mainstream treatment for early-stage esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and occult recurrent laryngeal nerve lymph node metastasis (RLNM) is not uncommon among those with R0 resection. The clinical value of postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) in patients with RLNM only is still controversial. METHODS Consecutive patients with early-stage ESCC treated with R0 resection and pathologically confirmed RLNM only from June 2012 to July 2022 were retrospectively reviewed. PORT, covering the supraclavicular and superior mediastinum area (small T-field) at a dose of 50.4 Gy for 28 fractions, was performed in some patients. Propensity score matching (PSM) was performed to balance the baseline characteristics between patients with or without PORT. Pattern of failure, disease-free survival (DFS), and overall survival (OS) were compared. RESULTS Among the 189 patients identified, 69 (35.5%) received PORT and the other 120 (63.5%) did not. After PSM, 154 patients were included in the matched cohort, including 62 in the PORT group and 92 in the non-PORT group. With a median follow-up of 48 (95% CI: 40.3-55.7) months, 69 patients developed their initial disease recurrence in the whole population and PORT significantly decreased the frequency of local recurrence (61.2% vs 21.4%) among those with recurrent disease. Additionally, in the PSM matched cohort, PORT significantly prolonged patients' DFS (HR 0.393, P = 0.002) and OS (HR 0.462, P = 0.020). Moreover, PORT remained as the independent factor associated with improved DFS (HR 0.360, P = 0.001) and OS (HR 0.451, P = 0.021) after multivariate Cox analyses. In addition, tumor location and pathological TNM stage were found to be independent prognostic factors associated with survival outcomes. CONCLUSION PORT is associated with improved DFS and OS in ESCC patients with R0 resection and RLNM only, which warrants future validation.

Abstract
Background Src homology 2 domain-containing phosphatase 2 (SHP2) is hyper-activated in some solid tumors. Previous findings suggest that the expression of SHP2 in colorectal cancer (CRC) may be associated with prognosis. However, validation with large sample data is lacking. Materials and Methods: Tissue microarrays containing 860 CRCs and 197 mucosal tissues adjacent to the tumors were constructed. Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate the expression of SHP2. Differences between SHP2 expression and clinicopathological parameters were evaluated. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and log-rank tests were used to analyze the relationships between SHP2 expression and the overall survival of patients. A Cox proportional hazard regression model was used for univariate and multivariate analyses of prognostic factors. Results SHP2 expression in CRCs tissues was significantly higher than those in adjacent mucosal tissues (P < 0.001). SHP2 expression was related to tumor differentiation, depth of invasion, distant metastasis, vascular tumor thrombus, lymph node metastasis, and TNM classification (P < 0.05). The prognosis of the high-expression group of SHP2 was significantly better than that of the low-expression group (P = 0.008). Univariate analysis showed that the expression of SHP2 was a prognostic factor for CRC (P = 0.008). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that SHP2 remained an independent prognostic factor for CRC (P = 0.033). Conclusion The expression of SHP2 was significantly higher in CRC tissues than in adjacent normal tissues. High expression of SHP2 was associated with a promising outcome, suggesting that SHP2 may be a favorable prognostic indicator of CRC.

Abstract
Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is one of the most common malignant tumours of the urinary system. However, the aetiology and pathogenesis of RCC remain unclear. The C2H2 zinc finger protein (ZNF) family is the largest transcriptional regulatory factor family found in mammals, and Krüppel-associated box domain-containing zinc finger proteins (KRAB-ZFPs) constitute the largest subfamily of the C2H2 zinc finger protein family and play an important role in the occurrence and development of tumours. The aim of this study was to explore the role of abnormal methylation of ZNF471 in the development of renal carcinoma. Methods: In this study, we first used the TCGA and EWAS Data Hub databases to analyse the expression and methylation levels of ZNF471 in renal carcinoma tissues and adjacent normal tissues. Second, we collected samples of renal cancer and adjacent normal tissues at Peking University First Hospital to investigate the expression and methylation level of ZNF471 in renal cancer tissues and the relationships between these levels and the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients with renal cancer. Next, we investigated the effects of ZNF471 on the proliferation, metastasis, cell cycle progression, and apoptosis of renal cell carcinoma cells by cell biology experiments. Finally, we elucidated the underlying molecular mechanisms of ZNF471 in renal cell carcinoma by transcriptome sequencing, bioinformatics analysis and molecular biology experiments. Results: The expression of ZNF471 in renal carcinoma tissues and cell lines was significantly lower than that in adjacent normal tissues and cell lines due to abnormal promoter CpG methylation. Furthermore, the expression of ZNF471 in renal carcinoma tissues was negatively correlated with tumour stage and grade in patients with renal carcinoma. The results of the cell biology experiments showed that ZNF471 could significantly inhibit the proliferation, migration and cell cycle progression of renal cell carcinoma cells and promote apoptosis in these cells. In addition, ZNF471 could interact with BANP and suppress the malignant phenotype of RCC by inactivating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling pathway. Conclusions: As an important tumour suppressor, ZNF471 can interact with BANP in renal cancer cells and inhibit the activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling pathway, thereby inhibiting the occurrence and development of renal cancer.

Abstract
AIMS We aimed to classify molecular subtypes and establish a prognostic gene signature based on miRNAs for the prognostic prediction and therapeutic response in Stomach adenocarcinoma (STAD). BACKGROUND STAD is a common diagnosed gastrointestinal malignancy and its heterogeneity is a big challenge that influences prognosis and precision therapies. Present study was designed to classify molecular subtypes and construct a prognostic gene signature based on miRNAs for the prognostic prediction and therapeutic response in STAD. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to investigate the molecular subtypes and prognostic model for STAD. METHODS A STAD specific miRNA-messenger RNA (mRNA) competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was generated using the RNA-Seq and miRNA expression profiles from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, in which miRNA-related mRNAs were screened. Molecular subtypes were then determined using miRNA-related genes. Through univariate Cox analysis and multivariate regression analysis, a prognostic model was established in GSE84437 Train dataset and validated in GSE84437 Test, TCGA, GSE84437 and GSE66229 datasets. Immunotherapy datasets were employed for assessing the performance of the risk model. Finally, quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was applied to validate the expression of hub genes used for the risk score signature. RESULTS We constructed a ceRNA network containing 84 miRNAs and 907 mRNAs and determined two molecular subtypes based on 26 genes from the intersection of TCGASTAD and GSE84437 datasets. Subtype S2 had poor prognosis, lower tumor mutational burden, higher immune score and lower response to immunotherapy. Subtype S1 was more sensitive to Sorafenib, Pyrimethamine, Salubrinal, Gemcitabine, Vinorelbine and AKT inhibitor VIII. Next, a five-gene signature was generated and its robustness was validated in Test and external datasets. This risk model also had a good prediction performance in immunotherapy datasets. CONCLUSION This study promotes the underlying mechanisms of miRNA-based genes in STAD and offers directions for classification. A five-gene signature accurately predicts the prognosis and helps therapeutic options.

Abstract
Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) plus chemotherapy has demonstrated efficacy in resectable non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), yet the optimal period of neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy is undetermined. In a phase II study (neoSCORE, NCT04459611), more neoadjuvant therapy cycles appeared to provide greater pathological remission, and patients with squamous NSCLC had a better major pathological response rate than those with nonsquamous NSCLC. Sintilimab, a monoclonal anti-PD-1 antibody, has shown encouraging antitumor activity and safety in multiple cancers, including NSCLC. Here, we describe the study design of neoSCORE II (NCT05429463), a randomized, open-label, multicenter phase III trial comparing the efficacy and safety of three cycles with four cycles of neoadjuvant sintilimab plus platinum-based chemotherapy in resectable stage IIA-IIIB squamous NSCLC. Abstract
BACKGROUND Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are believed to regulate the progression of various cancers including colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the role and mechanism of circ_0124554 in regulating the sensitivity of CRC to radiation remain unknown. METHODS The RNA levels of circ_0124554, LIM and SH3 protein 1 (LASP1), and methyltransferase 3, N6-adenosine-methyltransferase complex catalytic subunit (METTL3) were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Protein expression was checked by western blot. Cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion were investigated by 5-Ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) assay, flow cytometry analysis, and transwell assay, respectively. The sensitivity of CRC cells to radiation was analyzed by cell colony formation assay. Xenograft mouse model assay was conducted to disclose the role of circ_0001023 in the sensitivity of tumors to radiation in vivo. The binding relationships among circ_0124554, miR-1184 and LASP1 were confirmed by a dual-luciferase reporter assay. m6A RNA immunoprecipitation assay was performed to identify the association of METTL3 with circ_0124554. RESULTS Circ_0124554 expression was upregulated in CRC tissues and cells in comparison with normal colorectal tissues and cells. Circ_0124554 knockdown inhibited proliferation, migration and invasion and promoted apoptosis and radiosensitivity of CRC cells. Moreover, circ_0124554 depletion inhibited tumor formation and improved radiosensitivity in vivo. MiR-1184 was identified as a target miRNA of circ_0124554 and targeted LASP1. Additionally, LASP1 overexpression rescued circ_0124554 knockdown-mediated effects in CRC cells. METTL3 mediated m6A methylation of circ_0124554. Further, circ_0124554 overexpression attenuated METTL3 depletion-induced effects in CRC cells. CONCLUSION m6A-modified circ_0124554 promoted CRC progression and radioresistance by inducing LASP1 expression through interaction with miR-1184.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate BRCA1/2 gene mutations and their relationship with clinicopathological features in patients with breast cancer in Zhoushan Islands. METHODS High-throughput whole-exome gene sequencing was used to detect BRCA1/2 mutations in 776 breast cancer patients in Zhoushan Islands. RESULTS The BRCA1/2 mutation rate of breast cancer patients in Zhoushan Islands was 4.38% (34/776). BRCA1 mutations were significantly correlated with age, molecular type, and family history of breast and ovarian cancers. BRCA2 mutations were most commonly found in invasive lobular carcinoma. Moreover, the BRCA2 mutation rate of cancers with molecular type luminal B (receptor protein-tyrosine kinase [HER2]-negative) was also relatively high. CONCLUSION The rate of BRCA1/2 mutations in breast cancer patients from Zhoushan Islands is approximately 4.38%, and BRCA1 mutation is related to age, molecular type, and family history of breast and ovarian cancers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The cancer burden in China has been increasing over the decades. However, the cancer incidence remains unknown in Ma'anshan, which is one of the central cities in the Yangtze River Delta in Eastern China. The study was designed to describe the cancer incidence and trends in Ma'anshan from 2011 to 2018, providing information about cancer etiology that is useful for prevention programs. METHODS The cancer incidence rate and age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) were calculated using the cancer registry data in Ma'anshan during 2011-2018. The average annual percentage change (AAPC) of the ASIR was analyzed by the Joinpoint regression analysis. Age, period, and cohort effects on cancer incidence were estimated through the age-period-cohort model. RESULTS There were 13,508 newly diagnosed cancer cases in males and 9558 in females in Ma'anshan during 2011-2018. The ASIR maintained a steady trend in both males and females. Age effects showed that cancer risk increased with age in both genders; no visible period effects were detected during this study period. Cohort effects changed slowly until the end of the 1950s, then started decreasing in males while increasing in females after 1960. Lung, gastric, female breast, colorectal, cervical, esophageal, liver, thyroid, lymphoma, and pancreatic cancer were the most common cancers in Ma'anshan during the study period. The ASIR of gastric cancer (AAPC: -3.72%), esophageal cancer (AAPC: -8.30%), and liver cancer (AAPC: -5.55%) declined, while that of female breast cancer (AAPC: 3.91%), colorectal cancer (AAPC: 3.23%), and thyroid cancer (AAPC: 22.38%) rose. CONCLUSION During 2011-2018, the cancer incidence in Ma'anshan was lower than that in China, nation-wide. The incidence of upper gastrointestinal cancer decreased gradually while female breast, colorectal, and thyroid cancers showed an upward trend, consistent with the changes in the cancer spectrum in China. Further studies should be designed to discover the underlying causes of these findings.

Abstract
Lung cancer is the second most common and the deadliest type of cancer worldwide. Clinically, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common pathological type of lung cancer; approximately one-third of affected patients have locally advanced NSCLC (LA-NSCLC, stage III NSCLC) at diagnosis. Because of its heterogeneity, LA-NSCLC often requires multidisciplinary assessment. Moreover, the prognosis of affected patients is much below satisfaction, and the efficacy of traditional therapeutic strategies has reached a plateau. With the emergence of targeted therapies and immunotherapies, as well as the continuous development of novel radiotherapies, we have entered an era of novel treatment paradigm for LA-NSCLC. Here, we reviewed the landscape of relevant therapeutic modalities, including adjuvant, neoadjuvant, and perioperative targeted and immune strategies in patients with resectable LA-NSCLC with/without oncogenic alterations; as well as novel combinations of chemoradiation and immunotherapy/targeted therapy in unresectable LA-NSCLC. We addressed the unresolved challenges that remain in the field, and examined future directions to optimize clinical management and increase the cure rate of LA-NSCLC.

Abstract
Background Renal function is closely related to cancer prognosis. Since preoperative renal insufficiency has been identified as a risk factor for postoperative complications, this study aimed to investigate the effect of preoperative creatinine clearance rate (CrCl) on short-term prognosis of patients undergoing colorectal surgery. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted of the electronic health records of 526 adult patients who underwent elective colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery from September 2014 to February 2019 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. Cases were divided into two groups according to CrCl level and clinical variables were compared. Risk factors associated with postoperative complications were evaluated through univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results A total of 526 patients met the inclusion criteria. The overall rate of postoperative complications was 28.14%. Overall, the incidence of postoperative complications was significantly higher in the low CrCl patients. A low-level CrCl, multi-organ combined resection, and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) were independent risk factors for short-term complications in patients with CRC. However, a low CrCl was identified as an independent risk factor for short-term postoperative complications in elderly, but not young patients in a subgroup analysis. Conclusions Preoperative low-level CrCl, multi-organ combined resection, and CCI were significant risk factors of postoperative complications in CRC patients. Preoperative low-level CrCl and multi-organ combined resection has a poor prognostic impact for elderly patients with CRC. These findings should have important implications for health care decision-making among patients with CRC who are at higher risk for post-operative complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The long-term trends in crude mortality rates (CMRs) and age-standardized mortality rates characterized by Segi's world standard population (ASMRWs) of DMSCT in Pudong New Area (PNA), Shanghai, were evaluated from 1973 to 2019, and the role of demographic and non-demographic factors in the mortality of diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (DMSCT) was explored. METHODS The PNA district has the largest population and area in Shanghai. Therefore, the mortality registration system of the PNA district was used to calculate and verify the number of deaths. Then, the Joinpoint Regression Program was used to analyze the time trend of mortality. The difference decomposition method was used to visualize the mortality of population and non-population factors, and GraphPad Prism was used for image visualization. RESULTS A total of 2260 deaths from DMSCT occurred from 1973 to 2019. The CMR and ASMRW of DMSCT were 2.56/105 person-years and 1.57/105 person-years, respectively. The number of people aged ≥80 (696 deaths) who died of DMSCT was the highest among total deaths, the highest number of years of life lost (YLL) was observed in the 45-59 age group, and the YLL rate in the ≥80 age group was the highest. The CMR and YLL rates of DMSCT showed upward trends in the total population from 1973 to 2019. CONCLUSION The CMR and YLL rates of DMSCT showed upward trends in the total population from 1973 to 2019 in PNA, Shanghai, and age was closely related to the occurrence of DMSCT. Similarly, demographic factors played a role in this process.

Abstract
While Salvia chinensis Benth (commonly known as "Shijianchuan" in Chinese, and abbreviated as SJC) is commonly used in adjuvant therapy for colorectal cancer (CRC) in traditional Chinese medicine, its mechanism of action remains unclear. In this study, Initially, we examined the impact of SJC on CRC cells in an in vitro setting. Next, we initially retrieved the primary active components and targets of SJC from databases such as TCMSP and existing literature. Subsequently, we integrated differential gene expression data from the GEO database and collected CRC-related targets from resources like DisGeNET. The matching of these datasets enabled the identification of SJC-CRC targets. We constructed a protein-protein interaction network and identified core targets through topological analysis. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed using clusterProfiler. We established networks linking traditional Chinese medicine components to targets and core targets to signaling pathways. Additionally, we performed molecular docking to validate interactions between the main compounds and targets, and employed Western blot analysis to explore how the major components of SJC affect crucial signaling pathways. In this study, SJC inhibited the viability of HCT-116 and HT-29 cells. We identified a total of 11 active components in SJC along with 317 target genes. Among these, there were 8612 target genes associated with CRC, and we successfully matched 276 SJC-CRC target genes. Through topological analysis of the protein-protein interaction network, we pinpointed 20 core targets. It was revealed that SJC effects are linked to genes governing processes like cell apoptosis, proliferation, hypoxia, oxidative stress, and signaling pathways such as PI3K-Akt through GO and KEGG pathway enrichment analyses. Additionally, we applied molecular docking techniques and observed that the majority of active compounds displayed robust binding affinity with the selected targets. In vitro experiments suggested that SJC and its key component, Ursolic acid, may exert its anti-CRC effects by modulating the core PI3K/AKT signaling pathway through inhibiting the phosphorylation of the target Akt1. This discovery is consistent with the predictions derived from network pharmacology methods. This study marks the inaugural utilization of bioinformatics methods in conjunction with in vitro experiments to comprehensively investigate the pharmacological and molecular mechanisms responsible for SJC anti-CRC effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The promising therapeutic outcomes of neoadjuvant immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy in the treatment of locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have been confirmed by several phase II clinical trials and have been widely demonstrated in clinical work. Theoretically, postoperative adjuvant immunotherapy may further improve the therapeutic effect, but there is still lack of evidence. The aim of this study was to analyse the safety and efficacy of perioperative immunotherapy (tislelizumab) in locally advanced resectable thoracic ESCC (PILOT trial). METHODS Seventy-three eligible patients with pathologically confirmed thoracic ESCC of clinical T1b-3N1-3M0 or T3N0M0 stage were allocated to receive neoadjuvant immunotherapy (tislelizumab 200 mg d1, q3w × 2 cycles) plus chemotherapy (nad-paclitaxel 260 mg/m2 d1 + carboplatin AUC = 5 d1, q3w × 2 cycles) treatment. Patients with pathologic complete response (pCR) after esophagectomy received adjuvant tislelizumab (200 mg every 3 weeks for up to one year), and patients with non-pCR were assigned adjuvant tislelizumab plus chemotherapy for two cycles and then maintenance tislelizumab (200 mg every 3 weeks for up to 15 cycles). The primary endpoint of this study is 2-year disease-free survival (DFS) in non-pCR patients. The secondary endpoints include pCR rate, major pathological response rate, 2-year DFS in pCR patients, R0 resection rate, adverse events, and overall survival. DISCUSSION This protocol was reviewed and approved by the Ethics Committee of Shanghai Chest Hospital (IS23059). This is the first prospective clinical trial to investigate the safety and efficacy of perioperative immunotherapy for locally advanced resectable thoracic ESCC. We hypothesize that perioperative immunotherapy could be a promising therapeutic strategy that can provide better 2-year DFS in non-pCR patients. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrial.gov: NCT0605633.

Abstract
Background MAF transcription factor G antisense RNA 1 (MAFG-AS1), a novel long non-coding RNA discovered recently, was proved to be useful in predicting malignancy prognosis. Nevertheless, its association with cancer prognosis has been inconsistent. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to explore the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of MAFG-AS1 in diverse carcinomas. Methods Studies focused on MAFG-AS1 expression as a prognostic role in cancers were thoroughly searched in six electronic databases. The value of MAFG-AS1 in malignancies was assessed by hazard ratios (HRs) or odds ratios (ORs). Additionally, the GEPIA database was utilized to further strengthen our conclusion. Results A total of 15 studies involving 1187 cases and nine types of cancers were recruited into this meta-analysis. High MAFG-AS1 expression was significantly related to advanced tumor stage (OR = 0.52, 95%CI [0.39, 0.69], P < 0.00001), earlier lymph node metastasis (OR = 3.62, 95%CI [2.19, 5.99], P < 0.00001), worse tumor differentiation (OR = 0.64, 95%CI [0.43, 0.95], P = 0.03), and poor overall survival (HR = 1.94, 95%CI [1.72, 2.19], P < 0.00001). No significant heterogeneity and publication bias was detected across studies. Meanwhile, MAFG-AS1 was significantly elevated in ten kinds of cancers based on the validation of the GEPIA database. Conclusion The results of this meta-analysis indicated that high MAFG-AS1 expression is dramatically correlated with unfavorable prognosis in cancers. MAFG-AS1 may be served as a promising biomarker for malignancies.

Objectives We aimed to provide a timely, comprehensive, and reliable assessment of the burden of iron deficiency (ID) in children between 1990 and 2019 at the global, regional, and national levels to inform policymakers in developing locally appropriate health policies. Methods Data related to ID among children younger than 15 years old were analyzed by sex, age, year, socio-demographic index (SDI), and location according to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019). Age-standardized rates were used to compare the burden between different regions and countries. Furthermore, the Joinpoint regression model was used to assess temporal trends from 1990 to 2019. Results In 2019, the number of prevalent cases and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for ID in children were 391,491,699 and 13,620,231, respectively. The global age-standardized prevalence and DALY rates for childhood ID in 2019 were 20,146.35 (95% confidence interval: 19,407.85 to 20,888.54) and 698.90 (466.54 to 1015.31) per 100,000, respectively. Over the past 30 years, the global prevalence of ID among children has been highest in low-SDI regions, particularly in Western Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa. Since 1990, the prevalence and DALY of ID in children have been declining in most geographic regions. Nationally, Ecuador, China, and Chile have shown the most significant decreases in prevalence. The greatest decline in age-standardized DALY rate was observed in Ecuador, while Burkina Faso experienced the highest increase. Bhutan had the highest prevalence and DALY rates in 2019. On the age level, the prevalence was relatively higher among the <5 years age group. At the gender dimension, the prevalence of ID in children overall was more pronounced in girls than in boys, as was the case for DALY. Conclusion Although the burden of ID in children has been declining, this disease remains a major public health problem, especially in countries with low SDI. Children younger than 5 years of age are an important group for whom targeted measures are needed to reduce the burden of ID.

Abstract
Background The burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Europe is at a high level, but the epidemiological features have not yet been systematically studied. This study aimed to provide a timely and reliable assessment of the burden and trends of CRC in Europe to provide a scientific basis for its prevention and treatment. Methods We analyzed data on CRC in 44 European countries between 1990 and 2019 from the Global Burden of Disease study (GBD) 2019. In addition, the joinpoint regression model was applied to reflect temporal trends. The age-period-cohort model was constructed to explore age, period, and birth cohort effects that influence the risk of morbidity and mortality. Results In Europe, new cases, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and deaths of CRC rose by 70.01%, 22.88% and 38.04% from 1990 to 2019, respectively. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) has increased, while age-standardized DALY rate and age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) have declined. We found that men experienced a significantly higher CRC burden than women. Age-period-cohort analysis showed that the risk of incidence and mortality increased with age and time; and it was lower in the later-born cohort than the earlier-born cohort. Conclusion ASIR for CRC in Europe generally trended upwards from 1990 to 2019, stabilizing in recent years but still at a high level. CRC burden varied considerably in different countries. There was a pronounced gender difference in CRC burden, and middle-aged and older men should be a priority population for CRC prevention and treatment.

Abstract
An increasing number of studies have reported the role of gut microbes in colorectal cancer (CRC) development, as they can be influenced by dietary metabolism and mediate alterations in host epigenetics, ultimately affecting CRC. Intake of specific dietary components can affect gut microbial composition and function, and their metabolism regulates important epigenetic functions that may influence CRC risk. Gut microbes can regulate epigenetic modifications through nutrient metabolism, including histone modification, DNA methylation, and noncoding RNAs. Epigenetics, in turn, determines the gut microbial composition and thus influences the risk of developing CRC. This review discusses the complex crosstalk between metabolic reprogramming, gut microbiota, and epigenetics in CRC and highlights the potential applications of the gut microbiota as a biomarker for the prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of CRC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer has been the leading cause of death since 2010 in China, with increasing incidence, mortality, and burden. We aimed to assess national and subnational changes in the cancer burden from 2005 to 2020 in China using data from the National Mortality Surveillance System. METHODS We extracted data on cancer-related deaths from the National Mortality Surveillance System, which accounts for 24·3% of the country's population with national and provincial representativeness. Data for the surveillance population stratified by age and sex were extracted from the National Bureau of Statistics of China. We estimated mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) for all cancers and for 23 cancer groups by age and sex, nationally, and for 31 provinces in China between 2005 and 2020. We calculated age-standardised mortality and YLL rates using the China 2020 census as the reference population. Average annual percent changes in age-standardised rates for mortality and YLLs were calculated to assess trends over the study period. Decomposition analysis was used to assess the drivers of changes in cancer-related death due to three explanatory components: population growth, population ageing, and age-specific mortality rates in China. FINDINGS The total number of cancer-related deaths increased by 21·6% to 2 397 772 and YLLs increased by 5·0% to 56 598 975 between 2005 and 2020. The three leading fatal cancer types remained stable for both sexes over the study period: tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer; liver cancer; and stomach cancer. The fourth and fifth leading cancers also remained stable among males (oesophageal, and colon and rectum), while colon and rectum cancer replaced oesophageal cancer as the fourth and breast cancer replaced colon and rectum cancer as the fifth leading cause of cancer-related death among females. Age-standardised mortality rates and age-standardised YLL rates for almost all cancer types (except for prostate for male and multiple myeloma for female) decreased significantly in both sexes in urban areas. Age-standardised YLL rates increased for about half of all cancers for both sexes in rural areas. Leading fatal types were leukaemia and brain and nervous system cancer in younger groups (aged 0-19 years); liver, tracheal, bronchus, and lung, or breast cancers in middle-aged groups (aged 40-59 years); and tracheal, bronchus, and lung, liver, or stomach cancers in older adults (aged ≥60 years) in 2020. The leading causes of cancer-related mortality varied for each province, with tracheal, bronchus, and lung or liver cancer at the top in 30 provinces. INTERPRETATION The cancer burden in China appeared to be shifting towards that in high-income countries from 2005 to 2020. Adjustments to existing health plans and actions are needed to reduce the burdens of tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer or other leading and emerging cancers. Abstract
PURPOSE Assessing the mortality rates associated with tobacco-related oral cancer (OC) is crucial for effective allocation of resources within healthcare and economic systems. METHODS In this study, data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2019 were utilized to analyze the burden of tobacco-attributable OC in China, the United States (US), and India from 1990 to 2019. Descriptive statistics and an age-period-cohort model were employed to examine and compare the effects on OC mortality. RESULTS 1. Attributable to tobacco, the deaths remained stable in the US, but increased in China and India. The trend of age-standardized mortality rate of OC increased in China, and decreased in the US and India, whereas the rate in India was the highest. 2. According to the APC model, the risk of death increased with age in all three countries. The period and later birth cohort effects were identified as risk factors in China and India, while in the US, the previous cohorts were identified as a risk factor. Except for India, males faced higher death risk than females in China and the US. CONCLUSIONS The burden of OC attributable to tobacco remains substantial in China and India. Public health officials in these countries should implement prevention and treatment strategies for OC, and interventions aimed at regulating the tobacco industry. The elderly is at an elevated risk for OC, and medical resources and policies should be directed toward this population. The successes experience in tobacco control and OC prevention in the US may serve as a model for other countries.

Abstract
PURPOSE To retrospectively examine the imaging characteristics of chest-computed tomography (CT) following percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) of the ground-glass nodule (GGN)-like lung cancer and its dynamic evolution over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS From June 2020 to May 2021, 147 patients with 152 GGNs (51 pure GGNs and 101 mixed GGNs, mean size 15.0 ± 6.3 mm) were enrolled in this study. One hundred and forty-seven patients underwent MWA procedures. The imaging characteristics were evaluated at predetermined time intervals: immediately after the procedure, 24-48 h, 1, 3, 6, 12, and ≥18 months (47 GGNs). RESULTS This study population included 147 patients with 152 GGNs, as indicated by the results: 43.5% (66/152) adenocarcinoma in situ, 41.4% (63/152) minimally invasive adenocarcinoma, and 15.1% (23/152) invasive adenocarcinoma. Immediate post-procedure tumor-level analysis revealed that the most common CT features were ground-glass opacities (93.4%, 142/152), hyperdensity within the nodule (90.7%, 138/152), and fried egg sign or reversed halo sign (46.7%, 71/152). Subsequently, 24-48 h post-procedure, ground-glass attenuations, hyperdensity, and the fried egg sign remained the most frequent CT findings, with incidence rates of 75.0% (114/152), 71.0% (108/152), and 54.0% (82/152), respectively. Cavitation, pleural thickening, and consolidation were less frequent findings. At 1 month after the procedure, consolidation of the ablation region was the most common imaging feature. From 3 to 12 months after the procedure, the most common imaging characteristics were consolidation, involutional parenchymal bands and pleural thickening. At ≥18 months after the procedure, imaging features of the ablation zone revealed three changes: involuting fibrosis (80.8%, 38/47), consolidation nodules (12.8%, 6/47), and disappearance (6.4%, 3/47). CONCLUSIONS This study outlined the anticipated CT imaging characteristics of GGN-like lung cancer following MWA. Diagnostic and interventional radiologists should be familiar with the expected imaging characteristics and dynamic evolution post-MWA in order to interpret imaging changes with a reference image.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Existing studies indicate that advanced colorectal neoplasms exhibit distinct clinical and biological traits based on anatomical sites. However, in China, especially for advanced colorectal neoplasms, there's limited information available on these traits. Our primary objective is to comprehensively study the characteristics of advanced colorectal neoplasm patients in different anatomical sites in China. METHODS We selected information from the colorectal cancer screening database in Tianjin, China, since 2010 as the study subject. We chose valid information from 3113 patients with comprehensive data and diagnosed advanced colorectal neoplasms (ANs) from a pool of 19,308 individuals to be included in the study. We then conducted further analysis to examine the correlation between these epidemiological data and tumor location. RESULTS Among the 3113 patients, neoplasms in the left side of the colon accounted for the largest proportion, while neoplasms in the right side of the colon had the smallest proportion, followed by rectal neoplasms. The highest proportion of advanced colorectal neoplasms was found among men. In the age group of 39-49 years old, the proportion of left late-stage advanced colon neoplasms was equal to that of right late-stage advanced colon neoplasms, while late-stage advanced rectal neoplasms increased with age. Smoking, drinking, and a history of colon cancer in first-degree relatives showed statistically significant associations with the location distribution of advanced colorectal neoplasms. A history of appendicitis, appendectomy, cholecystitis, or cholecystectomy did not significantly affect the location distribution of advanced colorectal neoplasms. However, among patients with such histories, there was a statistically significant relationship between advanced colon neoplasms on the right and those on the left and in the rectum. Similar results were observed for BMI. CONCLUSION Our research findings demonstrate that advanced colorectal neoplasms display unique epidemiological characteristics depending on their anatomical locations, and these distinctions deviate from those observed in Western populations. These insights contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the topic and offer valuable guidance for future research in China. We advocate for further investigations centered on the anatomical location of colorectal neoplasms to enhance the precision of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and treatment.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy is now widely used in different oncologic fields. It is feasible for the treatment of early, non-surgical and non-obstructive cancers. Also, in gastroenterology, where it was a few attempts to treat both the premalignant lesion and advanced colorectal cancer. Photodynamic therapy provides a new treatment option for advanced colon cancer patients with severe obstruction and elderly patients whose cardiopulmonary function cannot tolerate surgery, and effective nursing support throughout the treatment is the key to ensure successful treatment. This study reported the effect of whole-course care for colorectal cancer patients undergoing photodynamic therapy in the Department of Surgical Oncology, Lanzhou University Second Hospital, Lanzhou, China.

Abstract
The present study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of combination therapy with lenvatinib (Len) plus transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and TACE alone in patients with Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) B2 stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A total of 66 patients with BCLC B2 stage HCC were retrospectively reviewed in the present study, of which 34 patients received Len + TACE, while 32 patients received TACE alone between May 2018 and May 2020. Survival outcome, tumor response and adverse events (AEs) were compared between the two treatment groups. The 6-month, 1- and 2-year overall survival (OS) rates were significantly higher in the Len + TACE group (97.1, 85.3 and 76.3%, respectively) compared with those in the TACE group [(93.8, 81.1 and 45.4%, respectively); hazard ratio (HR), 0.395; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.180-0.867; P=0.023], but no significant difference in progression-free survival rate was observed between the two groups (HR, 0.815; 95% CI, 0.437-1.520; P=0.510). Patients receiving Len + TACE demonstrated a higher objective response rate compared with those receiving TACE alone (64.7 vs. 34.4%; P=0.014). Therefore, Len + TACE combination therapy was associated with increased OS and tumor response compared with that of TACE monotherapy in patients with BCLC B2 stage HCC. However, large-scale, multicenter, prospective studies are needed to further confirm these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatic inflammation is the major risk factor of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the underlying mechanism by which hepatic inflammation progresses to HCC is poorly understood. This study was designed to investigate the role of ETS translocation variant 4 (ETV4) in linking hepatic inflammation to HCC. METHODS Quantitative real-time PCR and immunoblotting were used to detect the expression of ETV4 in HCC tissues and cell lines. RNA sequencing and luciferase reporter assays were performed to identify the target genes of ETV4. Hepatocyte-specific ETV4-knockout (ETV4fl/fl, alb-cre ) and transgenic (ETV4Hep-TG ) mice and diethylnitrosamine-carbon tetrachloride (DEN-CCL4 ) treatment experiments were applied to investigate the function of ETV4 in vivo. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database mining and pathological analysis were carried out to determine the correlation of ETV4 with tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and mitogen-activated protein kinase 11 (MAPK11). RESULTS We revealed that ETV4 was highly expressed in HCC. High levels of ETV4 predicted a poor survival rate of HCC patients. Then we identified ETV4 as a transcription activator of TNF-α and MAPK11. ETV4 was positively correlated with TNF-α and MAPK11 in HCC patients. As expected, an increase in hepatic TNF-α secretion and macrophage accumulation were observed in the livers of ETV4Hep-TG mice. The protein levels of TNF-α, MAPK11, and CD68 were significantly higher in the livers of ETV4Hep-TG mice compared with wild type mice but lower in ETV4fl/fl, alb-cre mice compared with ETV4fl/fl mice as treated with DEN-CCL4 , indicating that ETV4 functioned as a driver of TNF-α/MAPK11 expression and macrophage accumulation during hepatic inflammation. Hepatocyte-specific knockout of ETV4 significantly prevented development of DEN-CCL4 -induced HCC, while transgenic expression of ETV4 promoted growth of HCC. CONCLUSIONS ETV4 promoted hepatic inflammation and HCC by activating transcription of TNF-α and MAPK11. Both the ETV4/TNF-α and ETV4/MAPK11 axes represented two potential therapeutic targets for highly associated hepatic inflammation and HCC. ETV4+TNF-α were potential prognostic markers for HCC patients.

Abstract
Background Esophageal squamous carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most malignant cancers in the world due to nodal metastasis. Therefore, a reasonable nodal staging system is extremely important for further treatment strategies. Recently the positive lymph node ratio (PLNR) is an important prognostic factor in various solid tumors. Method In this study, we investigated the clinical significance of the PLNR in stage II∼III ESCC patients. We collected the pathological characteristics of 272 stage II∼III ESCC patients from the SEER database from 2004-2016. ROC curves were used to calculate the best cutoff value of the PLNR; Pearson's Chi-square (χ2) and Fisher's exact probability tests were used to compare the clinical baseline and characteristics of patients. For continuous variables, Student's t-test and ANOVA were performed to evaluate statistical significance. Clinical outcomes were estimated by using the Kaplan‒Meier method and log-rank test. Furthermore, univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were utilized to analyze independent prognostic factors of ESCC patients. Results Consequently, advanced ESCC patients were effectively stratified into two groups by prognosis using a PLNR cutoff value of 0.15 (P value = 0.04). The median survival time of patients with PLNR <0.15 (n = 145) was much higher than that of patients (n = 127) in the PLNR ≥0.15 group (20.0 vs. 13.0 months, P value < 0.0001). Notably, the PLNR significantly predicted the prognosis of ESCC patients with stage N1 (P value 0.01) and stage III (P value < 0.001) disease. The multivariate Cox proportional hazard model showed that T stage (HR 1.33, 95 % CI 0.97-1.82), tumor size >45 mm (HR 1.32, 95 % CI 1.02-1.70), N stage (HR 1.41, 95 % CI 0.98-2.01) and PLNR ≥0.15 (HR 1.35, 95 % CI 0.87-1.74) were independent risk factors for prognostic prediction in ESCC patients. Meanwhile, 117 II∼III ESCC patients from Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital shown that the overall survival with a PLNR <0.15 (n = 96) was significantly longer than that with a PLNR ≥0.15 (n = 21) . Conclusions The PLNR is useful for accurately predicting clinical outcomes and determining postoperative strategies.
