Abstract
Background Iron deficiency is an important co-morbidity in heart failure patients. IV iron may improve quality of life and reduce heart failure hospitalizations, but the results of the clinical trials are varied. Objective The purpose of this meta-analysis is to assess not only the effect of IV iron in iron-deficient heart failure patients but also the quality of evidence. Methods PubMed and Cochrane databases were searched from inception to Oct 2021. Randomized clinical trials in iron-deficient, heart failure patients assessing the effect of IV iron versus placebo and with at least 12 weeks of follow-up were included. The outcomes were pooled and analyzed using a random-effect model. The quality of evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. Results Seven studies were included in our meta-analysis. IV iron was associated with a 13.8 % decreased risk of HF hospitalizations (OR 0.59; 0.35-0.98, p = 0.040, GRADE = Low). All-cause mortality and CV mortality were not different between IV iron and placebo. But a composite outcome of HF hospitalizations or CV mortality was 17.5 % lower with IV iron (OR 0.51;0.31-0.84, p = 0.008, GRADE = Moderate). Conclusions Among heart failure patients with iron deficiency, IV iron is associated with lower HF hospitalizations. It is a relatively inexpensive regimen that can potentially improve quality of life and decrease healthcare expenditure.

Abstract
Iron deficiency is frequent in patients with chronic inflammatory conditions (e.g., chronic heart failure, chronic kidney disease, cancers, and bowel inflammatory diseases). Indeed, high concentrations of inflammatory cytokines increase hepcidin concentrations that lead to the sequestration of iron in cells of the reticuloendothelial system (functional iron deficiency). Iron parameters are often assessed only in the context of anemia, but iron deficiency, even without anemia, is present in about half of patients with inflammatory conditions. Iron deficiency worsens underlying chronic diseases and is an independent factor of morbidity and mortality. In daily practice, the most effective biomarkers of iron status are serum ferritin, which reflects iron storage, and transferrin saturation, which reflects the transport of iron. Serum ferritin is increased in an inflammatory context, and there is still no consensus on the threshold to be used in chronic inflammatory conditions. Nevertheless, recent recommendations of international guidelines agreed to define iron deficiency by serum ferritin <100 µg/L and/or transferrin saturation <20%. Iron parameters remain, however, insufficiently assessed in patients with chronic inflammatory conditions. Indeed, clinical symptoms of iron deficiency, such as fatigue, are not specific and often confused with those of the primary disease. Iron repletion, preferably by the intravenous route to bypass tissue sequestration, improves clinical signs and quality of life. Because of the negative impact of iron deficiency on chronic inflammatory diseases and the efficacy of intravenous iron repletion, screening of iron parameters should be part of the routine examination of all patients with chronic inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Background: Anaemia remains a major cause of concern among the women of reproductive age in our country. However, there is a wide variation amongst different socio-economic strata. Aim & Objectives: This study was conducted among women of reproductive age for prevalence of anaemia and its association with certain socio-clinical variables in cantonment. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study. The information regarding socio-demographic variables, anthropometric measurements and clinical parameters were taken. Hemogram and iron profile was done by collecting venous blood from the participants. Results: Data was analyzed for 722 participants. Out of these 140, mild, moderate and severe anaemia was seen in 57, 77, 06 respectively. The major factors associated with anaemia were heavy menstruation and higher parity. Amongst these 140, iron deficiency anaemia was diagnosed in 135 .Among the 28 pregnant women, eight were anaemic (28.6: 95% CI 19.1-63.9).Conclusion: The results of our study showed lower prevalence of anaemia than national level and majority of these were iron deficiency anaemia, which is amenable to prevention and treatment.

Abstract
This study estimates the effect of length of schooling on anemia and nutritional status and evaluates the cost-effectiveness of primary schooling as an anemia intervention for women of childbearing age in Ethiopia. In 1994-1995, Ethiopia abolished primary school tuition fees and embarked on a large-scale educational investment program, which increased primary school enrollment and retention. An instrumented regression-discontinuity design was used to examine the effect on anemia risk and body mass index (BMI) of an increase in length of schooling resulting from the reforms, as a natural experiment. Anemia and BMI biomarkers and demographic data for 13,984 women were obtained from the 2011 and 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys, with the 2019 Mini Demographic and Health Survey used for robustness checks. Results indicate that each additional year of schooling reduced anemia risk by 3 percentage points (9.2%-11.2% reduction) and increased BMI (weight (kg)/height (m)2) by 0.26-0.42. Primary education was cost-effective-based on World Health Organization cost-effectiveness thresholds-as an anemia intervention, with a cost per anemia case averted of US$1,654. The findings suggest that investment in education reduces anemia risk later in life.

Abstract
Background: Digital process monitoring and evaluation tools designed to capture near-to-real-time intervention data paired with feedback loops have the potential to innovate intervention delivery. Objective: To describe how a multilevel social norms field trial (RANI) is using feedback loops to enhance intervention delivery. Methods: We use a mixed-methods process evaluation design to monitor the Reduction of Anemia through Normative Innovations (RANI) project; a three-year randomized control trial which aims to lower rates of anemia among women in Odisha, India. Surveys and structured observation monitor fidelity to implementation and acceptability of implementation activities among study participants. Quantitative data evaluates implementation dose, coverage, exposure, and reach of intervention activities, and qualitative data will delve more deeply into reasons for high or low functioning. Iron folic acid supplement supply and demand are also monitored for stock-outs. Data collected from 130 intervention villages is processed, visualized, and triangulated in near to real-time via Real-time Monitoring for Knowledge Generation (RPM4K), a locally developed software application. Data visualization products facilitate the examination of monitoring data to mitigate bottlenecks and identify and implement tweaks to our intervention delivery strategy on an ongoing basis. Discussion: Feedback loops facilitate timely course corrections. Feedback loops can also engender a shared understanding of ground realities for a geographically dispersed and culturally diverse team. Leveraging feedback loops, we identify opportunities to provide on-going supportive supervision for our community facilitators promoting joint problem-solving, and communication. Monthly media and hemoglobin level demonstration strategies are informed by participant engagement and acceptability. Stock-outs of iron folic acid tablets activate contingency plans to mobilize local stakeholders and advocate for timely resolutions. Unintended effects are monitored based on ongoing feedback from community facilitators. Conclusions: Documenting our processes can inform the future implementation or scale up of similar projects embracing feedback loops to iterate and innovate their intervention delivery.

Abstract
Background: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a global health problem affecting the quality of life of more than 2 billion individuals. The current practice guidelines diagnose and monitor IDA via conventional hematological and iron biomarkers, which take several months before they are corrected under an iron-treatment plan. Reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (Ret-He) is used as a marker in most new hematology analyzers to assess iron incorporation into erythrocyte hemoglobin directly. This study aims to examine the efficacy of Ret-He as a marker for iron deficiency (ID) and IDA and investigate whether Ret-He is sensitive to iron therapy. Methods: Two blood samples were drawn from 182 participants for CBC and iron profile measurements. Follow-up samples were drawn from participants with a confirmed diagnosis of ID and/or IDA. Results: Ret-He levels were lower in the ID and IDA groups compared to the control (p < 0.0001), and lower in the IDA group compared to the ID group (p < 0.0001). Ret-He was correlated with ferritin at ID level (<30.0 mg/mL; r = 0.39) and severe IDA (<13.0 ng/mL; p-value < 0.01, r = 0.57). Cut-off values of <28.25 pg for ID and <21.55 pg for IDA showed a higher specificity and sensitivity (ID; AUC: 0.99, sensitivity: 92.73%, specificity: 97.87%) and (IDA; AUC: 0.94, sensitivity: 90.63%, specificity: 92.31%). Finally, Ret-He successfully reflected the iron therapy (p < 0.001) when compared to hemoglobin (Hb) (p = 0.1). Conclusions: Ret-He is a potential marker for detecting and diagnosing different stages of ID with high validity and is very sensitive in reflecting the iron incorporation in a short time.

Abstract
In the 21st century the heart is facing more and more challenges so it should be brave and iron to meet these challenges. We are living in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, population aging, prevalent obesity, diabetes and autoimmune diseases, environmental pollution, mass migrations and new potential pandemic threats. In our article we showed sophisticated and complex regulations of iron metabolism. We discussed the impact of iron metabolism on heart diseases, treatment of heart failure, diabetes and obesity. We faced the problems of constant stress, climate change, environmental pollution, migrations and epidemics and showed that iron is really essential for heart metabolism in the 21st century.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-transplantation anemia (PTA) is frequent among solid organ transplant recipients and has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, the prevalence and impact of PTA in lung transplant recipients is still not elucidated. METHODS We performed a retrospective cohort study of adult Danish lung transplant recipients between January 2010 and December 2019. The prevalence and severity of PTA were determined during the first three years post-transplantation. Associations between PTA and selected risk factors were established using uni- and multivariate logistic regression models. RESULTS A total of 278 patients were included. At one and three years post-lung transplantation the prevalence of PTA was 75% and 52%, respectively. Male sex was associated with increased odds of PTA at all time points (aOR ranging from 2.3, 95% CI 1.1-4.6, P = 0.02 to 5.9, 95% CI 2.6-14, P < .001). Cystic fibrosis was also associated with anemia at one-year post-transplantation (aOR 4.3, 95% CI 1.2-17, P = 0.03). We found no strong associations between PTA and renal function or viral infections. Excess mortality in recipients with moderate or severe anemia compared to patients with mild or no anemia was borderline statistically significant at one-year post-lung transplantation (aHR 2.0, 95% CI 0.9-4.4, P = 0.07). DISCUSSION Post-transplantation anemia is very common in Danish lung transplant recipients. Male sex and cystic fibrosis are independent risk factors for development of anemia. Further investigation on PTA, the underlying mechanisms, and its clinical impact is needed.

Abstract
Intrinsic improvement of iron (Fe) concentration in rice grains, called rice Fe biofortification, is a promising countermeasure against widespread human Fe deficiency. In this study, two novel rice Fe biofortification approaches are reported. The first approach (Y approach) involved the expression of maize YELLOW STRIPE 1 controlled by the HEAVY METAL ATPASE 2 promoter. The Y approach increased the polished grain Fe concentrations up to 4.8-fold compared with the non-transgenic (NT) line. The second approach (T approach) involved the expression of rice TRANSPORTER OF MUGINEIC ACID 1 controlled by the FERRIC REDUCTASE DEFECTIVE LIKE 1 promoter. The T approach increased the polished grain Fe concentrations by up to 3.2-fold. No synergistic increases in the polished grain Fe concentrations were observed when Y and T approaches were combined (YT approach). However, the polished grain Fe concentrations further increased by 5.1- to 9.3-fold compared with the NT line, when YT approach was combined with the endosperm-specific expression of FERRITIN (YTF approach), or when YTF approach was combined with the constitutive expression of NICOTIANAMINE SYNTHASE (YTFN approach). Total grain weight per plant in most Y, T, YT, and YTFN lines was comparable to that in the NT line, while it was significantly decreased in most YTF lines. The novel approaches reported in this study expand the portfolio of genetic engineering strategies that can be used for Fe biofortification in rice.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate anemia treatment and other potential effects of two food-derived bioactive oligopeptide iron complexes on pregnant rats with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and their offspring. Rats with IDA were established with a low iron diet and then mated. There were one control group and seven randomly assigned groups of pregnant rats with IDA: Control group [Control, 40 ppm ferrous sulfate (FeSO4)]; IDA model group (ID, 4 ppm FeSO4), three high-iron groups (H-FeSO4, 400 ppm FeSO4; MCOP-Fe, 400 ppm marine fish oligopeptide iron complex; WCOP-Fe, 400 ppm whey protein oligopeptide iron complex) and three low-iron groups (L-FeSO4, 40 ppm FeSO4; MOP-Fe, 40 ppm marine fish oligopeptide iron complex; WOP-Fe, 40 ppm whey protein oligopeptide iron complex). Rats in each group were fed the corresponding special diet during pregnancy until the day of delivery. After different doses of iron supplement, serum hemoglobin, iron, and ferritin levels in rats with IDA were significantly increased to normal levels (P < 0.05). Serum iron levels were significantly lower in two food-derived bioactive oligopeptide low-iron complex groups than in the low FeSO4 group (P<0.05). Liver malondialdehyde levels were significantly increased in the three high-iron groups compared with the other five groups (P < 0.05), and hemosiderin deposition was observed in liver tissue, indicating that the iron dose was overloaded and aggravated the peroxidative damage in pregnant rats. Liver inflammation was reduced in the three low-iron groups. Tumor necrosis factor α secretion was significantly decreased in all groups with supplemented oligopeptide (P < 0.05), with the concentration of tumor necrosis factor α declining to normal levels in the two whey protein oligopeptide iron complex groups. In the marine fish oligopeptide iron complex groups, body length, tail length, and weight of offspring were significantly increased (P < 0.05) and reached normal levels. Therefore, food-derived bioactive oligopeptide (derived from marine fish skin and milk) iron complexes may be an effective type of iron supplement for pregnancy to improve anemia, as well as reduce the side effects of iron overload, and improve the growth and nutritional status of offspring.

Abstract
Abstract: The iron deficient anaemia is a common medical condition in patients with heart failure receiving antithrombotic therapy. Especially during the COVID19 pandemic period the rate of bleeding complications associated with the antithrombotic therapy tend to be higher, as the patient’s referral to medical services is lower and the interaction doctor-patient is limited. In our retrospective observational study we included 300 consecutive patients with decompensated heat failure associating iron deficient anaemia. For defining the medical conditions we used the ESC guidelines terminology and diagnostic criteria. We assessed the association between the iron deficient anaemia and different antithrombotic therapies, recommended in concordance to ESC Guidelines. We found that aspirin 75mg/day was statistical significant associated with iron deficient anaemia (p 0.012) and anaemia severity (p 0.002), this association being assessed by Chi square and Pearson tests. Also, neither clopidogrel, ticagrelor, VKA or non-VKA were associated to the presence of anaemia. By assessing the mortality rate associated to anaemia severity, the severe anaemia was associated to higher mortality rate, meanwhile no antithrombotic therapy was associated with higher readmission or mortality rate (p<0.001). In conclusion, aspirin was the only antithrombotic therapy associated with the presence of anaemia and anaemia severity, while only severe anaemia was associated with statistic significant increase of patient’s mortality, with nonstatistical result regarding the readmission rate. This finding is concordant to the necessity of a permanent evaluation of the antithrombotic therapy in heart failure patients.

Abstract
Background World Health Organization recently acknowledged the proportion of anemia attributable to iron deficiency among under-five children could be lower than the previously assumed 50%. Ethiopia reported 8.6% and 12.3% prevalence of iron deficiency anemia by serum ferritin and soluble transferrin receptor respectively. However, evidence generated from large samples on the magnitude of different types of anemias is limited. We aimed to determine the prevalence and morphological types of anemia in relation to age. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted using electronic records of hemoglobin and red blood cell indices of 4739 children of 6-59 months of age who visited Hawassa University Comprehensive and Specialized Hospital from May 2017 to May 2019. Microcytic hypochromic morphology combined with high red cell distribution width was used to estimate the prevalence of iron deficiency. Results About 44.7% of the children were anemic. Anemia affected 6-23 months old children (53.1%) more than 24-59 (37.2%) months (p < 0.001) with no difference among boys and girls. Iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia, as explained by microcytic hypochromic morphology with high red cell distribution width combined model, were estimated to be 38.6% and 24.1%, respectively. About 54% of anemic children had iron deficiency which was higher among 6-23 months (63.5%) than 24-59 months (41.8%) (P < 0.001; X2 = 98.883). Regardless of anemia status, iron deficiency was two-fold higher among 6-23 months old children than 24-59 months of age. On the contrary, normocytic normochromic anemia affected significantly 24-59 months old children (23.1%) compared to 6-23 months. Less than 6% of the total anemia was macrocytic showing no significant relation with age. About 96% of macrocytic anemia was coupled with high red cell distribution width, indicating folate and vitamin B12 deficiency. Conclusions Microcytic hypochromic anemia with high red cell distribution width was the most prevalent type affecting primarily under two children. Normocytic normochromic anemia was significant among 24-59 months while macrocytic anemia had no age-related pattern. An in-depth study of causes of anemia other than iron deficiency particularly among 24-59 months children is essential.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the impact of integrating processed fruits and vegetables (FV) into diets in terms of diet cost reduction and ensuring nutritional adequacy year-round. DESIGN Market surveys were conducted to record foods. Focus group discussions (FGD) and 24-h dietary assessments - from children and women - were carried out to determine culturally accepted dietary habits. Six processed FV were considered for addition to diets. Using the Cost of Diet linear programming tool, standards diets were first modelled, and subsequently, the processed FV were included to analyse their impact. SETTING Rural Tanzania: Mtwara and Morogoro. PARTICIPANTS Market survey: 50 traders; FGD: 40 women; 24-h recalls: 36 infants aged 6-23 months, 52 children aged 6-13 years and 292 women. RESULTS The standard diet costs between TZS 232 and 2368 (USD 0·3-3) daily for infants. For children aged 6-13 years, it costs between TZS 1711 and 7199 (USD 2·2-9·1) daily and the cost for the women was between TZS 2793 and 10 449 (USD 3·5-13·2). Addition of the processed FV reduced diet costs by up to 61 %, 48 % and 49 % for children aged 12-23 months, children aged 6-13 years and women, respectively. However, for infants aged 6-11 months, costs rose by up to 127 %. The processed FV addressed all micronutrient gaps in the diets except for infants aged 6-11 months, where some micronutrient intakes were unfulfilled. CONCLUSIONS Processed FV could provide a feasible option to ensure availability of nutritious but cheap diets year-round. Hence, interventions to process FV into nutritious and affordable products should extensively be pursued.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Diffusion-weighted imaging lesions (DWILs) are associated with unfavorable outcome in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We proposed a novel predictive nomogram incorporating DWILs. METHODS A total of 738 patients with primary ICH in a tertiary hospital were prospectively enrolled as a training cohort. DWILs were defined as remote focal hyperintensities on DWI corresponding to low intensities on apparent diffusion coefficient images and remote from the focal hematoma. The outcome of interest was modified Rankin Scale scores of 4-6 at 90 days after onset. Multivariate logistic regression was used to construct a nomogram. Model performance was tested in the training cohort and externally validated with respect to discrimination, calibration, and clinical usefulness in another institute. Additionally, the nomogram was compared with the ICH score in terms of predictive ability. RESULTS Overall, 153 (20.73%) and 23 (15.54%) patients developed an unfavorable outcome in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The multivariate analysis revealed that age, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, anemia, infratentorial location, presence of DWILs, and prior ICH were associated with unfavorable outcome. Our ANAID-ICH nomogram was constructed according to the aforementioned variables; the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.842 and 0.831 in the training and validation sets, respectively. With regard to the 90-day outcome, the nomogram showed a significantly higher predictive value than the ICH score in both cohorts. CONCLUSIONS The ANAID-ICH nomogram comprising age, NIHSS score, anemia, infratentorial location, presence of DWILs, and prior ICH may facilitate the identification of patients at higher risk for an unfavorable outcome.

Abstract
Iron is an indispensable nutrient for life. A lack of it leads to iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), which currently affects about 1.2 billion people worldwide. The primary means of IDA treatment is oral or parenteral iron supplementation. This can be burdened with numerous side effects such as oxidative stress, systemic and local-intestinal inflammation, dysbiosis, carcinogenic processes and gastrointestinal adverse events. Therefore, this review aimed to provide insight into the physiological mechanisms of iron management and investigate the state of knowledge of the relationship between iron supplementation, inflammatory status and changes in gut microbiota milieu in diseases typically complicated with IDA and considered as having an inflammatory background such as in inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer or obesity. Understanding the precise mechanisms critical to iron metabolism and the awareness of serious adverse effects associated with iron supplementation may lead to the provision of better IDA treatment. Well-planned research, specific to each patient category and disease, is needed to find measures and methods to optimise iron treatment and reduce adverse effects.

Abstract
Iron is a vital element in nearly every living organism. During pregnancy, optimal iron concentration is essential for both maternal health and fetal development. As the barrier between the mother and fetus, placenta plays a pivotal role in mediating and regulating iron transport. Imbalances in iron metabolism correlate with severe adverse pregnancy outcomes. Like most other nutrients, iron exhibits a U-shaped risk curve. Apart from iron deficiency, iron overload is also dangerous since labile iron can generate reactive oxygen species, which leads to oxidative stress and activates ferroptosis. In this review, we summarized the molecular mechanism and regulation signals of placental iron trafficking under physiological conditions. In addition, we revealed the role of iron metabolism and ferroptosis in the view of preeclampsia and gestational diabetes mellitus, which may bring new insight to the pathogenesis and treatment of pregnancy-related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Iron plays an important role in neurodevelopmental functions in the brain. Serum ferritin levels are different in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and tic disorder than in healthy children.
AIM To explore the current status of iron deficiency in children with neurodevelopmental disorders and its sex and age effects.
METHODS A total of 1565 children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), 1694 children with tic disorder (TD), 93 children with ASD and 1997 healthy control children were included between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021 at Beijing Children's Hospital. We describe the differences in age levels and ferritin levels between different disease groups and their sex differences. The differences between the sexes in each disease were analyzed using the t test. The incidence rate of low serum ferritin was used to describe the differences between different diseases and different age groups. A chi-square test was used to analyze the difference in the incidence of low serum ferritin between the disease group and the control group. Analysis of variance was used for comparisons between subgroups, and regression analysis was used for confounding factor control.
RESULTS A total of 1565 ADHD patients aged 5-12 years were included in this study, and the average serum ferritin levels of male and female children were 36.82 ± 20.64 μg/L and 35.64 ± 18.56 μg/L, respectively. A total of 1694 TD patients aged 5-12 years were included in this study, and the average serum ferritin levels of male and female children were 35.72 ± 20.15 μg/L and 34.54 ± 22.12 μg/L, respectively. As age increased, the incidence of low serum ferritin in ADHD and TD first decreased and then increased, and 10 years old was the turning point of rising levels. The incidence of ADHD with low serum ferritin was 8.37%, the incidence of TD with low serum ferritin was 11.04%, and the incidence of the healthy control group with low serum ferritin was 8.61%, among which male children with TD accounted for 9.25% and female children with TD accounted for 11.62%. There was a significant difference among the three groups (P < 0.05). In addition, there were 93 children with ASD with an average serum ferritin level of 30.99 ± 18.11 μg/L and a serum ferritin incidence of 15.05%.
CONCLUSION In conclusion, low serum ferritin is not a risk factor for ADHD or TD. The incidence of low serum ferritin levels in children with ADHD and TD between 5 and 12 years old decreases first and then increases with age.

Abstract
Serum ferritin (SF) is an iron-rich protein tightly connected with iron homeostasis, and the variations are frequently observed in diseased states, including iron-deficiency anemia, inflammation, liver disease, and tumors, which renders SF level an indicator of potential malignancies in clinical practice. Nanobodies (Nbs) have been widely explored and developed into theranostic reagents. Surprisingly, no reports stated the identification of anti-SF Nbs, nor the potential of such Nbs as a diagnostic tool. In this study, we generated SF-specific Nbs and provided novel clinical diagnostic approaches to develop an immunoassay. An immune library was constructed after immunizing an alpaca with SF, and five Nbs specifically targeting human SF were retrieved. The obtained Nbs exhibited robust properties including high stability, affinity, and specificity. Then, an ELISA-based test using a heterologous Nb-pair was developed. The calibration curve demonstrated a linear range of SF between 9.0 to 1100 ng/mL, and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.01 ng/mL. The detecting recovery and coefficient variation (CV) were determined by spiking different concentrations of SF into the serum sample, to verify the successful application of our selected Nbs for SF monitoring. In general, this study generated SF-specific Nbs and demonstrated their potential as diagnostic immunoassay tools.

Abstract
Iron deficiency is a significant comorbidity of heart failure (HF), defined as the inability of the myocardium to provide sufficient blood flow. However, iron deficiency remains insufficiently detected. Iron-deficiency anemia, defined as a decrease in hemoglobin caused by iron deficiency, is a late consequence of iron deficiency, and the symptoms of iron deficiency, which are not specific, are often confused with those of HF or comorbidities. HF patients with iron deficiency are often rehospitalized and present reduced survival. The correction of iron deficiency in HF patients is associated with improved functional capacity, quality of life, and rehospitalization rates. Because of the inflammation associated with chronic HF, which complicates the picture of nutritional deficiency, only the parenteral route can bypass the tissue sequestration of iron and the inhibition of intestinal iron absorption. Given the negative impact of iron deficiency on HF progression, the frequency and financial implications of rehospitalizations due to decompensation episodes, and the efficacy of this supplementation, screening for this frequent comorbidity should be part of routine testing in all HF patients. Indeed, recent European guidelines recommend screening for iron deficiency (serum ferritin and transferrin saturation coefficient) in all patients with suspected HF, regular iron parameters assessment in all patients with HF, and intravenous iron supplementation in symptomatic patients with proven deficiency. We thus aim to summarize all currently available data regarding this common and easily improvable comorbidity.

Abstract
Increasing iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) concentrations in crop grains with high yield is an effective measure to ensure food supply and alleviate mineral malnutrition in humans. Micronutrient concentrations in grains depend on not only their availability in soils but also their uptake in roots and translocation to shoots and grains. In this three-year field study, we investigated genotypic variation in Fe and Zn uptake and translocation within six wheat cultivars and examined in detail Fe and Zn distributions in various tissues of two cultivars with similar high yield but different grain Fe and Zn concentrations using synchrotron micro-X-ray fluorescence. Results revealed that root Fe and Zn concentrations were 11 and 44% greater in high-nutrient (HN) than in low-nutrient (LN) concentration cultivar. Although both cultivars accumulated similar amounts of Fe in shoots, HN cultivar had greater accumulation of Fe in grain and greater accumulation of Zn in both shoots and grain. Grain Zn concentration was positively correlated with shoot Zn accumulation, and grain Fe concentration was positively correlated with the ability to translocate Fe from leaves/stem to grains. In the first nodes of shoots, HN cultivar had 482% greater Fe and 36% greater Zn concentrations in the enlarged vascular bundle (EVB) than LN cultivar. In top nodes, HN cultivar had 225 and 116% greater Fe and Zn concentrations in the transit vascular bundle and 77 and 71% greater in the EVB when compared to LN cultivar. HN cultivar also had a greater ability to allocate Fe and Zn to the grain than LN cultivar. In conclusion, HN cultivar had greater capacity of Fe and Zn acquirement by roots and translocation and partitioning from shoots into grains. Screening wheat cultivars for larger Fe and Zn concentrations in shoot nodes could be a novel strategy for breeding crops with greater grain Fe and Zn concentrations.

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common micronutrient deficiency. Tegillarca granosa (T. granosa) is a good source of iron due to its high content of hemoglobin. The present study aimed to determine the effects of glycosylation on structure, physicochemical characteristics and iron bioavailability of hemoglobin. Using Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology, the optimal conditions for hemoglobin-chitosan glycosylation were obtained: 61.8 °C, pH 6.3, hemoglobin/chitosan mass ratio of 4.3 and reaction time of 15 min. The formation of hemoglobin-chitosan conjugates was verified by SDS-PAGE and fluorescence spectroscopy. The surface hydrophobicity of hemoglobin was reduced by 20.90-65.05 % after glycosylation, along with the observations of elevated water-holding capacity, likely owing to the introduction of hydrophilic groups. Antioxidant capacity of glycosylated products (0.41-0.66 μM Trolox/mg protein) was markedly greater than that of original protein (0.06 μM Trolox/mg protein) due to the formation of brown polymers with antioxidant activity. In addition, glycosylation improved in vitro digestibility of hemoglobin by 41.15-69.09 %, which could be attributed to less β-sheet in secondary structures. Moreover, hemoglobin (324.38 ng/mg) exhibited better iron absorption than FeSO4 (121.63 ng/mg), with the value being further enhanced by glycosylation (442.73 ng/mg), which may be due to the improved protein digestibility and iron-chelating capacity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of obesity and the number of bariatric surgeries in both the general population and in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have increased significantly in recent years. Due to small sample sizes and the lack of adequate controls, no definite conclusions can be drawn from the available studies on the safety and efficacy of bariatric surgery (BS) in patients with IBD. Our aim was to assess safety, weight loss, and deficiencies in patients with IBD and obesity who underwent BS and compare findings to a control group. METHODS Patients with IBD and a history of BS were retrospectively recruited to centers belonging to the Groupe d'Etude Thérapeutique des Affections Inflammatoires du Tube Digestif (GETAID). Patients were matched 1:2 for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), hospital of surgery, and type of BS with non-IBD patients who underwent BS. Complications, rehospitalizations, weight, and deficiencies after BS were collected in cases and controls. RESULTS We included 88 procedures in 85 patients (64 Crohn's disease, 20 ulcerative colitis, 1 unclassified IBD) with a mean BMI of 41.6 ± 5.9 kg/m2. Bariatric surgery included Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (n = 3), sleeve gastrectomy (n = 73), and gastric banding (n = 12). Eight (9%) complications were reported, including 4 (5%) requiring surgery. At a mean follow-up of 34 months, mean weight was 88.6 ± 22.4 kg. No difference was observed between cases and controls for postoperative complications (P = .31), proportion of weight loss (P = .27), or postoperative deficiencies (P = .99). CONCLUSIONS Bariatric surgery is a safe and effective procedure in patients with IBD and obesity; outcomes in this patient group were similar to those observed in a control population.

Abstract
Background The time interval from first symptom and sign until a cancer diagnosis significantly affects the prognosis. Therefore, recognising and acting on signs of cancer, such as anaemia, is essential. Evidence is sparse on the overall risk of cancer and the risk of specific cancer types in persons with new-onset anaemia detected in an unselected general practice population. We aimed to assess the risk of cancer in persons with new-onset anaemia detected in general practice, both overall and for selected cancer types. Methods This observational population-based cohort study used individually linked electronic data from laboratory information systems and nationwide healthcare registries in Denmark. We included persons aged 40–90 years without a prior history of cancer and with new-onset anaemia (no anaemia during the previous 15 months) detected in general practice in 2014–2018. We measured the incidence proportion and standardised incidence ratios of a new cancer diagnosis (all cancers except for non-melanoma skin cancers) during 12 months follow-up. Results A total of 48,925 persons (median [interquartile interval] age, 69 [55–78] years; 55.5% men) were included in the study. In total, 7.9% (95% confidence interval (CI): 7.6 to 8.2) of men and 5.2% (CI: 4.9 to 5.5) of women were diagnosed with cancer during 12 months. Across selected anaemia types, the highest cancer incidence proportion was seen in women with ‘anaemia of inflammation’ (15.3%, CI: 13.1 to 17.5) (ferritin > 100 ng/mL and increased C-reactive protein (CRP)) and in men with ‘combined inflammatory iron deficiency anaemia’ (19.3%, CI: 14.5 to 24.1) (ferritin < 100 ng/mL and increased CRP). For these two anaemia types, the cancer incidence across cancer types was 10- to 30-fold higher compared to the general population. Conclusions Persons with new-onset anaemia detected in general practice have a high cancer risk; and markedly high for ‘combined inflammatory iron deficiency anaemia’ and ‘anaemia of inflammation’. Anaemia is a sign of cancer that calls for increased awareness and action. There is a need for research on how to improve the initial pathway for new-onset anaemia in general practice. Abstract
Genetic biofortification is recognized as a cost-effective and sustainable strategy to reduce micronutrient malnutrition. Genomic regions governing grain iron concentration (GFeC), grain zinc concentration (GZnC), and thousand kernel weight (TKW) were investigated in a set of 280 diverse bread wheat genotypes. The genome-wide association (GWAS) panel was genotyped using 35 K Axiom Array and phenotyped in five environments. The GWAS analysis showed a total of 17 Bonferroni-corrected marker-trait associations (MTAs) in nine chromosomes representing all the three wheat subgenomes. The TKW showed the highest MTAs (7), followed by GZnC (5) and GFeC (5). Furthermore, 14 MTAs were identified with more than 10% phenotypic variation. One stable MTA i.e. AX-95025823 was identified for TKW in both E4 and E5 environments along with pooled data, which is located at 68.9 Mb on 6A chromosome. In silico analysis revealed that the SNPs were located on important putative candidate genes such as Multi antimicrobial extrusion protein, F-box domain, Late embryogenesis abundant protein, LEA-18, Leucine-rich repeat domain superfamily, and C3H4 type zinc finger protein, involved in iron translocation, iron and zinc homeostasis, and grain size modifications. The identified novel MTAs will be validated to estimate their effects in different genetic backgrounds for subsequent use in marker-assisted selection. The identified SNPs will be valuable in the rapid development of biofortified wheat varieties to ameliorate the malnutrition problems.

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) has reached epidemic proportions in developing countries and has become a major global public health problem, affecting mainly 0–5-year-old children and young women of childbearing age, especially during pregnancy. Iron deficiency can lead to life-threatening loss of red blood cells, muscle function, and energy production. Therefore, the pathogenic features associated with IDA are weakness and impaired growth, motor, and cognitive performance. IDA affects the well-being of the young generation and the economic advancement of developing countries, such as India. The imbalance between iron intake/absorption/storage and iron utilization/loss culminates into IDA. However, numerous strategic programs aimed to increase iron intake have shown that improvement of iron intake alone has not been sufficient to mitigate IDA. Emerging critical risk factors for IDA include a composition of cultural diets, infections, genetics, inflammatory conditions, metabolic diseases, dysbiosis, and socioeconomic parameters. In this review, we discuss numerous IDA mitigation programs in India and their limitations. The new multifactorial mechanism of IDA pathogenesis opens perspectives for the improvement of mitigation programs and relief of IDA in India and worldwide.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify secreted protein biomarkers in serum from the label-free LC/MS proteomics of neutrophils in pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients for the diagnosis biomarkers of TB label-free LC/MS. The proteomic profiles of neutrophils from 15 active TB patients and 15 healthy controls (HCs) were analyzed using label-free LC/MS. We identified 358 differentially expressed proteins preliminarily, including 279 up-regulated proteins and 79 down-regulated proteins. Thirty-eight differentially expressed secreted proteins involved in the progress of platelet degranulation between TB patients and HCs were focused. Of these, serotransferrin (TRF), alpha-2-macroglobulin (AMG), alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT), alpha-1-acid glycoprotein 1 (AAG), alpha-1-acid glycoprotein 2 (AGP2), and alpha-1B-glycoprotein (A1BG) were selected for further verification in the serum of additional 134 TB patients and 138 HCs by nephelometry and ELISA in the training set. Statistically significant differences of TRF (P < 0.0001), AAT (P < 0.0001), AAG (P < 0.0001), AGP2 (P < 0.0001), and A1BG (P = 0.0003) were observed. The serum concentration of TRF was down-regulated in TB patients compared with healthy controls, which was coincident with the proteomics results. An additional validation of TRF was performed in an independent cohort of patients with active TB (n = 46), patients with lung cancer (n = 37), 20 HCs, and patients with pneumonia (n = 35) in the test set by nephelometry. The serum expression levels of TRF in the TB patients showed lower levels compared with those in patients with pneumonia (P = 0.0125), lung cancer (P = 0.0005), HCs (P < 0.0001), and the non-TB controls (P < 0.0001). Furthermore, the AUC value of TRF was 0.647 with 90.22% sensitivity and 42.86% specificity in discriminating the TB group from the pneumonia group, 0.702 with 93.48% sensitivity and 47.16% specificity in discriminating the TB group from the lung cancer group, 0.894 with 91.30% sensitivity and 71.62% specificity in discriminating the TB group from all HCs, and 0.792 with 91.30% sensitivity and 58.90% specificity in discriminating the TB group from the non-TB controls. This study obtained the proteomic profiles of neutrophils in the TB patients and HCs, which contribute to a better understanding of the pathogenesis molecules existing in the neutrophils of pulmonary tuberculosis and provide candidate biomarkers for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis.

Abstract
The correlation between cardiovascular disease and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is well documented but poorly understood. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, we explore the hypothesis that the biophysical alterations of red blood cells (RBCs) in IDA, such as variable degrees of microcytosis and decreased deformability may directly induce endothelial dysfunction via mechanobiological mechanisms. Using a combination of atomic force microscopy and microfluidics, we observed that subpopulations of IDA RBCs (idRBCs) are significantly stiffer and smaller than both healthy RBCs and the remaining idRBC population. Furthermore, computational simulations demonstrated that the smaller and stiffer idRBC subpopulations marginate toward the vessel wall causing aberrant shear stresses. This leads to increased vascular inflammation as confirmed with perfusion of idRBCs into our "endothelialized" microfluidic systems. Overall, our multifaceted approach demonstrates that the altered biophysical properties of idRBCs directly lead to vasculopathy, suggesting that the IDA and cardiovascular disease association extends beyond correlation and into causation.

Abstract
Recent research has demonstrated that critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) show significant immune system dysregulation. Due to that, some nutrients that influence immunomodulation have been suggested as a form of treatment against the infection. This review collected the information on the impact of vitamins on the prognosis of COVID-19, with the intention of facilitating treatment and prevention of the disease risk status in patients. The collected information was obtained using the PubMed electronic database by searching for articles that relate COVID-19 and the mechanisms/effects of the nutrients: Proteins, glucose, lipids, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, iron, copper, zinc, and magnesium, including prospective, retrospective, and support articles. The findings reveal an optimal response related mainly to omega-3, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, calcium, and iron that might represent benefits in the treatment of critically ill patients. However, nutrient supplementation should be done with caution due to the limited availability of randomized controlled studies.

Abstract
Iron, an essential element for most of living organisms, participates in many biological functions. Since iron is redox-active transition metal, it is known that excessive levels stimulate the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and exacerbate cytotoxicity. An iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency disorder in the world (about 30% of the population) and is more common than cases of iron overload. However, the effects of iron deficiency on ROS-induced cytotoxicity and the maintenance of intracellular redox homeostasis are not fully understood. The present study reports on an evaluation of the effects of iron deficiency on cytotoxicity induced by several ROS generators. In contrast to hydrogen peroxide and erastin, the cytotoxicity of 2,3-dimethoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (DMNQ), a redox cycling agent that induces intracellular superoxide anion formation, was exacerbated by iron deficiency. Cytochrome b5 reductase was identified as a candidate enzyme responsible for the redox cycling of DMNQ under conditions of iron depletion. Moreover, the DMNQ-induced intracellular accumulation of ROS and a decrease in NADH/NAD+ ratios were enhanced by an iron deficiency. These negative changes were found to be ameliorated by overexpressing NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) in kidney-derived cells that originally showed a very low expression of NQO1. These results indicate that NQO1 plays a protective role against redox cycling quinone-mediated cytotoxicity under iron-depleted conditions. This is because NQO1 generates less-toxic hydroquinones via the two-electron reduction of quinones. The collective findings reported herein demonstrate that not only an iron overload but also an iron deficiency exacerbates ROS-mediated cytotoxicity.

Abstract
There is conflicting evidence of the roles vitamin D and iron have in isolation and combined in relation to muscle health. The purpose of this narrative review was to examine the current literature on the roles that vitamin D and iron have on skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function and how these nutrients are associated with skeletal muscle health in specific populations. Secondary purposes include exploring if low vitamin D and iron status are interrelated with skeletal muscle health and chronic inflammation and reviewing the influence of animal-source foods rich in these nutrients on health and performance. PubMed, Scopus, SPORT Discus, EMBAE, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar databases were searched to determine eligible studies. There was a positive effect of vitamin D on muscle mass, particularly in older adults. There was a positive effect of iron on aerobic and anaerobic performance. Studies reported mixed results for both vitamin D and iron on muscle strength and function. While vitamin D and iron deficiency commonly occur in combination, few studies examined effects on skeletal muscle health and inflammation. Isolated nutrients such as iron and vitamin D may have positive outcomes; however, nutrients within food sources may be most effective in improving skeletal muscle health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The skin overlying cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) sometimes becomes very thin after implantations, which could cause a device erosion. The factors related to the skin thickness of device pockets have not been elucidated. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the skin thickness of CIED pockets and search for the factors associated with the thickness. METHODS Seventeen skin thickness points around the CIED pocket were measured through ultrasonography in each patient. RESULTS A total of 101 patients (76±11 years, 26 female) was enrolled. The median duration from the implantation to the examination was 95 months (quartile: 52.5~147.5). The median skin thickness overlying the device was 4.1 mm (3.3~5.9). Patients with heart failure and malignancy had thinner skin overlying the CIED than those without. A significant correlation existed between skin thickness and body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin, serum creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and left ventricular ejection fraction. In contrast, the age, gender, and device size did not exhibit a significant correlation with the skin thickness. A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that chronic heart failure and a decrease in the eGFR and BMI were independent predictive factors of "very thin (≦3.3 mm)" skin of the CIED pocket late after an implantation. CONCLUSION Aside from a low BMI, the comorbidities (low hemoglobin, heart failure, and renal dysfunction) had a stronger impact on the skin thickness overlying the device than the device size. Abstract
Iron is an essential nutrient for a child’s proper development at every growth stage. It is crucial for the production of red blood and muscle cells, DNA replication, and the development of the brain, nervous and immune systems. Iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient deficiency in children worldwide. Despite widespread access to nutritional information for children, parents continue to make many feeding mistakes. This study aimed to assess whether any nutritional intervention would affect the iron status in children. The parents of 203 children were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the study group received intensive mobile nutritional education for a year, while the control group received no intervention. Blood tests were performed on both groups at the beginning of the study and one year later. The educational intervention resulted in statistically significantly higher levels of RBC (red blood cells; p = 0.020), HGB (haemoglobin; p = 0.039), HCT (haematocrit; p = 0.036), MCV (mean cell volume; p = 0.018) parameters and iron dietary intake (p ≤ 0.001). Even a non-targeted dietary intervention improves the iron status in children. As iron management is insufficient in most children, an iron-targeted nutritional intervention appears necessary.

The nutritional impact of replacing dietary meat with meat alternatives in the UK: a modelling analysis using nationally representative data. Br J Nutr 2022; 127:1731-1741. Abstract
Dietary patterns high in meat compromise both planetary and human health. Meat alternatives may help to facilitate meat reduction; however, the nutritional implications of displacing meat with meat alternatives does not appear to have been evaluated. Here, the ninth cycle of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey was used as the basis of models to assess the effect of meat substitution on nutritional intake. We implemented three models; model 1 replaced 25 %, 50 %, 75 % or 100 % of the current meat intake with a weighted mean of meat alternatives within the UK market. Model 2 compared different ingredient categories of meat alternative; vegetable, mycoprotein, a combination of bean and pea, tofu, nut and soya. Model 3 compared fortified v. unfortified meat alternatives. The models elicited significant shifts in nutrients. Overall, carbohydrate, fibre, sugars and Na increased, whereas reductions were found for protein, total and saturated fat, Fe and B12. Greatest effects were seen for vegetable-based (+24·63g/d carbohydrates), mycoprotein-based (-6·12g/d total fat), nut-based (-19·79g/d protein, +10·23g/d fibre; -4·80g/d saturated fat, +7·44g/d sugars), soya-based (+495·98mg/d Na) and tofu-based (+7·63mg/d Fe, -2·02μg/d B12). Our results suggest that meat alternatives can be a healthful replacement for meat if chosen correctly. Consumers should choose meat alternatives low in Na and sugar, high in fibre, protein and with high micronutrient density, to avoid compromising nutritional intake if reducing meat intake. Manufacturers and policy makers should consider fortification of meat alternatives with nutrients such as Fe and B12 and focus on reducing Na and sugar content.

Abstract
In most bacteria, iron plays an important role in the survival of bacteria and the process of infection to the host. Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) evolved three iron transporters (i.e., PiaABC, PiuABC, and PitABC) responsible for the transportation of three kinds of iron (i.e., ferrichrome, hemin, and ferric ion). Our previous study showed that both mRNA and protein levels of SPD_0090 were significantly upregulated in the ΔpiuA/ΔpiaA/ΔpitA triple mutant, but its detailed biological function is unknown. In this study, we constructed spd_0090 knockout and complement strain and found that the deletion of spd_0090 hinders bacterial growth. SPD_0090 is located on the cell membrane and affects the hemin utilization ability of S. pneumoniae. The cell infection model showed that the knockout strain had stronger invasion and adhesion ability. Notably, knockout of the spd_0090 gene resulted in an enhanced infection ability of S. pneumoniae in mice by increasing the expression of virulence factors. Furthermore, iTRAQ quantitative proteomics studies showed that the knockout of spd_0090 inhibited carbon metabolism and thus suppressed bacterial growth. Our study showed that SPD_0090 negatively regulates the virulence of S. pneumoniae.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited evidence supports the efficacy of iron-rich foods (IRFs) in improving iron status during pregnancy. OBJECTIVES The study aims to evaluate the effect of IRFs on iron status and biomarkers of iron metabolism in the third trimester of pregnancy. METHODS A total of 240 pregnant women at 11-13 wk of gestation without iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) in South China were recruited to this single-blind clinical trial [non-IDA referred to both hemoglobin (Hb) ≥110g/L and serum ferritin (SF) ≥15ng/mL], randomly assigned to 1) control, 2) IRFs containing 20 mg iron/d (IRF-20), or 3) IRFs containing 40 mg iron/d (IRF-40). The IRFs were consumed 3 days a week, including pork liver, chicken/duck blood, soybean, and agaric. The IRFs started at recruitment and ended in the predelivery room. Primary outcome included anemia (Hb <110 g/L), iron deficiency (ID, definition 1: SF <15 ng/mL; definition 2: SF <12 ng/mL), and IDA (ID and Hb <110 g/L). Secondary outcome was plasma Hb and iron indices, including SF, serum hepcidin, and iron. RESULTS All participants who completed the trial with full data (n = 170) were included in the analysis. At the endline, both intervention groups showed lower ID and IDA rates than control. Specifically, IRF-40 showed a lower ID (SF <12 ng/mL) rate than control (9.0% compared with 22.8%, P = 0.022). For IDA by definition 1, the incidence in IRF-40 was lower than that in control (1.9% compared with 8.9%, P = 0.045). For IDA by definition 2, the incidence in IRF-20 was lower than that in control (3.9% compared with 17.9%, P = 0.049). Moreover, IRF-20 showed higher SF concentrations than control (P = 0.039). No effects of IRFs on anemia (P = 0.856), plasma Hb (P = 0.697), serum hepcidin (P = 0.311), and iron (P = 0.253) concentrations were observed. The assessed iron intakes were 22.2 mg/d in IRF-20 and 25.0 mg/d in IRF-40, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Antenatal IRFs reduce the risk of ID and IDA in late pregnancy, although the present results are inadequate to confirm an ideal dosage (No. ChiCTR1800017574).

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between household food insecurity and dietary intake and nutrition-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) among parents aged ≥18 years in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. The current cross-sectional study was carried out in 2021 among adults (mothers and fathers) aged ≥18 years. A total of 614 participants were selected from all Gaza Strip governorates using a cluster random sampling method. To assess the nutrition-related KAP, we employed the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations questionnaire (Modules 5, 6, 7, and 9). Data regarding household food security status, demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the study participants, anthropometric measurements, and dietary intakes were obtained using standard questionnaires and methods. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25. About 71.5% and 28.5% of the study participants were household food-insecured and household food-secured, respectively. Significant associations were found between participants from household food-secured and household food-insecured concerning several socio-demographic variables, anthropometric measures, intakes of energy, protein, carbohydrate, and calcium; nutrition-related knowledge and attitudes toward undernutrition and vitamin A deficiency; nutrition-related KAP of iron deficiency anemia; and nutrition-related attitudes and practices of food safety (P-values < 0.05 for all). In conclusion, the demographic and socioeconomic status, anthropometric measurements, and poor dietary intakes may be associated with high levels of household food insecurity, while having nutrition-related adequate KAP may be associated with low levels of household food insecurity among parents aged ≥18 years.

Abstract
For the last five years, a 43-year-old female presented with progressive dysphagia for solids and liquids. She was treated for iron deficiency anemia by systemic and oral iron therapy. Gastroenterologists failed to pass endoscopes through the upper esophagus. Gastrogrifin swallow revealed a critical narrowing of the esophagus. She was referred to a thoracic surgeon for further management. The cervical esophagus was exposed through the neck incision along the anterior border of the left sternocleidomastoid muscle, and esophageal dilatation was achieved using the silicon foleys catheter. It is a very safe and valuable surgical technique when dysphagia cannot be managed by endoscopically. A 43 years old female know case of iron deficiency anemia. Oral and intravenous iron replacements for two years. Failed endoscopy examination due to unable to pass endoscope through esophagus. Innovative surgical dilatation technique using foleys catheter.

Abstract
We have previously demonstrated that the Na-K-ATPase signaling-mediated oxidant amplification loop contributes to experimental uremic cardiomyopathy and anemia induced by 5/6th partial nephrectomy (PNx). This process can be ameliorated by systemic administration of the peptide pNaKtide, which was designed to block this oxidant amplification loop. The present study demonstrated that the PNx-induced anemia is characterized by marked decreases in red blood cell (RBC) survival as assessed by biotinylated RBC clearance and eryptosis as assessed by annexin V binding. No significant change in iron homeostasis was observed. Examination of plasma samples demonstrated that PNx induced significant increases in systemic oxidant stress as assessed by protein carbonylation, plasma erythropoietin concentration, and blood urea nitrogen. Systemic administration of pNaKtide, but not NaKtide (pNaKtide without the TAT leader sequence) and a scramble "pNaKtide" (sc-pNaKtide), led to the normalization of hematocrit, RBC survival, and plasma protein carbonylation. Administration of the three peptides had no significant effect on PNx-induced increases in plasma erythropoietin and blood urea nitrogen without notable changes in iron metabolism. These data indicate that blockage of the Na-K-ATPase signaling-mediated oxidant amplification loop ameliorates the anemia of experimental renal failure by increasing RBC survival.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The anemia of CKD is multifactorial, and the current treatment based primarily on stimulating bone marrow production of RBCs with erythropoietin or erythropoietin analogs is unsatisfactory. In a murine model of CKD that is complicated by anemia, blockade of Na-K-ATPase signaling with a specific peptide (pNaKtide) ameliorated the anemia primarily by increasing RBC survival. Should these results be confirmed in patients, this strategy may allow for novel and potentially additive strategies to treat the anemia of CKD.

Abstract
Iron deficiency remains a major problem in both developed and developing countries. Iron supplementation has been used as a standard intervention for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). There are many factors affecting the efficacy, including stunting, infections or inflammations, and genetics. Recently, some studies have been conducted to further investigate the effects of probiotics on immunity and iron homeostasis. This mini review discusses about some important factors that can improve the management of IDA.

Abstract
Introduction Childhood and adolescence require adequate amount of micronutrients for normal growth and development. The primary objective of study was to assess the prevalence of deficiencies of Vitamins (Vitamin A, 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and Folate) and minerals (Calcium, Zinc, Selenium and Iron), among urban school going children aged 6–11 and 12–16 years in ten cities of India. Secondary objective was to find the association between micronutrient deficiencies with sociodemographic and anthropometric indicators. Methods A multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted across India. Participants in the age groups of 6 to 11 years (group 1) and 12 to 16 years (group 2) were selected from randomly chosen schools from each center. Data on socio economic status, anthropometric measures was collected. Blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis of micronutrients. Point estimates and 95% confidence intervals was used to assess the prevalence of deficiencies. Associations were observed using chi square, student t test and ANOVA test. Results From April 2019 to February 2020, 2428 participants (1235 in group 1 and 1193 group 2) were recruited from 60 schools across ten cites. The prevalence of calcium and iron deficiency was 59.9% and 49.4% respectively. 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D deficiency was seen in 39.7% and vitamin B12 in 33.4% of subjects. Folate, Selenium and Zinc were deficient in 22.2%, 10.4% and 6.8% of subjects respectively. Vitamin A deficiency least (1.6%). Anemia was prevalent in 17.6% subjects and was more common among females. Conclusion One or more micronutrient deficiencies are found in almost one half of school going children in urban area. Hence efforts must be made to combat these on priority. Trial registration number CTRI/2019/02/017783.

Abstract
Dancers are an athlete population at high risk of developing iron deficiency (ID). The aesthetic nature of the discipline means dancers potentially utilise dietary restriction to meet physique goals. In combination with high training demands, this means dancers are susceptible to problems related to low energy availability (LEA), which impacts nutrient intake. In the presence of LEA, ID is common because of a reduced mineral content within the low energy diet. Left untreated, ID becomes an issue that results in fatigue, reduced aerobic work capacity, and ultimately, iron deficient anaemia (IDA). Such progression can be detrimental to a dancer’s capacity given the physically demanding nature of training, rehearsal, and performances. Previous literature has focused on the manifestation and treatment of ID primarily in the context of endurance athletes; however, a dance-specific context addressing the interplay between dance training and performance, LEA and ID is essential for practitioners working in this space. By consolidating findings from identified studies of dancers and other relevant athlete groups, this review explores causal factors of ID and potential treatment strategies for dancers to optimise absorption from an oral iron supplementation regime to adequately support health and performance.

Abstract
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac tachyarrhythmia and has a rising global prevalence. Given the increasing burden of AF-related symptoms and complications, new approaches to management are required. Anemia and iron deficiency are common conditions in patients with AF. Furthermore, emerging evidence suggests that the presence of anemia may be associated with worse outcome in these patients. The role of anemia and iron deficiency has been extensively explored in other cardiovascular states, such as heart failure and ischemic heart disease. In particular, the role of iron repletion amongst patients with heart failure is now an established treatment modality. However, despite the strong bidirectional inter-relationship between AF and heart failure, the implications of anemia and iron-deficiency in AF have been scarcely studied. This area is of mechanistic and clinical relevance given the potential that treatment of these conditions may improve symptoms and prognosis in the increasing number of individuals with AF. In this review, we summarise the current published literature on anemia and iron deficiency in patients with AF. We discuss AF complications such as stroke, bleeding, and heart failure, in addition to AF-related symptoms such as exercise intolerance, and the potential impact of anemia and iron deficiency on these. Finally, we summarize current research gaps on anemia, iron deficiency, and AF, and underscore potential research directions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bisphenols have endocrine-disrupting effects, which may disrupt hemoglobin (Hb) homeostasis and lead to anemia. However, the effects of bisphenols on anemia remain unknown. Therefore, we assessed the effects of single- and multiple-exposure to bisphenols on Hb levels and anemia of pregnant women. METHODS The study involved 2035 pregnant women from Guangxi Zhuang Birth Cohort in China. Generalized linear regression, principal component analysis (PCA), quantile g-computation (Qgcomp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were performed to examine the effects of serum bisphenols on Hb levels and the risk of anemia. RESULTS After adjustment, elevated bisphenol A (BPA) levels were correlated with decreased Hb concentrations (β = -0.51; 95%CI: -0.92, -0.10) in the first trimester, and these correlations were more sensitive in mothers of males. Compared with the low-exposure group, bisphenol B (BPB) levels in the high-exposure group led to a 1.52 g/L (95%CI: -3.01, -0.03) decrease in Hb levels in the second trimester; tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) levels in the high-exposure group led to a higher the risk of anemia in the third trimester (OR = 1.46; 95%CI: 1.07, 1.99); bisphenol F (BPF) in the high-exposure group led to lower Hb levels (β = -2.42; 95%CI:-4.69, -0.14) in mothers of male fetuses in the third trimester. Qgcomp showed that elevated levels of bisphenol mixture was correlated with (β = -1.42; 95%CI: -2.61, -0.24) decrease in Hb levels in the second trimester. PCA revealed a negative association between PC2 and Hb levels in the first trimester (β = -0.89; 95%CI: -1.61, -0.17). Similarly, a negative relationship was observed between PC1 and Hb levels in the third trimester among mothers with male fetuses (β = -1.00; 95%CI: -1.94, -0.06). CONCLUSIONS Prenatal exposure to single and mixed bisphenols may decrease Hb levels and increase the risk of anemia during pregnancy, the associations may be greater in mothers with male fetuses than those with female fetuses.

Abstract
Malnutrition due to micronutrients and protein deficiency is recognized among the major global health issues. Genetic biofortification of wheat is a cost-effective and sustainable strategy to mitigate the global micronutrient and protein malnutrition. Genomic regions governing grain zinc concentration (GZnC), grain iron concentration (GFeC), grain protein content (GPC), test weight (TW), and thousand kernel weight (TKW) were investigated in a set of 184 diverse bread wheat genotypes through genome-wide association study (GWAS). The GWAS panel was genotyped using Breeders' 35 K Axiom Array and phenotyped in three different environments during 2019-2020. A total of 55 marker-trait associations (MTAs) were identified representing all three sub-genomes of wheat. The highest number of MTAs were identified for GPC (23), followed by TKW (15), TW (11), GFeC (4), and GZnC (2). Further, a stable SNP was identified for TKW, and also pleiotropic regions were identified for GPC and TKW. In silico analysis revealed important putative candidate genes underlying the identified genomic regions such as F-box-like domain superfamily, Zinc finger CCCH-type proteins, Serine-threonine/tyrosine-protein kinase, Histone deacetylase domain superfamily, and SANT/Myb domain superfamily proteins, etc. The identified novel MTAs will be validated to estimate their effects in different genetic backgrounds for subsequent use in marker-assisted selection.

Abstract
Anaemia in children under five years remains a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in low-middle income countries. Globally, 27% of the world’s population is anaemic, of which developing countries account for more than 89%. The global prevalence is worse in Africa and Asia. Anaemia has the potential of maintaining the cycle of poverty, as it prevents children from attaining their full development potential. An important part of anaemia in children under-five years are preventable. Locally available dietary (LAD) interventions may be the sustainable interventions to address the high prevalence of anaemia in our communities. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of counselling on Locally Available Diet, on anaemia among children aged 6–59 months in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region, Ghana. This study will be a community-based cluster randomized, controlled trial, with two parallel arms; Iron + Folic Acid (IFA arm) hereby referred to as the Standard care arm and Iron + Folic Acid + Counselling on Locally available dietary intervention (IFA+LAD arm) referred to as the Standard Plus arm. Study participants are children between the ages of 6 to 56 months. All study participants would receive iron plus folic acid. The minimum number of children per arm is 330 and the number of community clusters is 10 (5 per study arm). Also, considering this study proposes two parallel arms, the total minimum study sample size of children under five years is 496, the minimum total number of community clusters is 10 and a minimum of 25 households per community cluster, 124 households per study arm and 248 households for the study. Randomization is at the level of the clusters (selected communities). The intervention group receives counselling on LAD at a household level aimed at promoting the intake of locally available iron, folate and vitamin B12 rich foods. Also encourage the intake of food rich in enhancers of iron absorption and discouraging the intake of food rich in inhibitors of iron absorption. The primary outcome is mean haemoglobin levels in study arms. Secondary outcomes would include measurement of weight, height/length, mid upper arm circumference, dietary record, serum iron, ferritin, and other parameters of full blood count. Ethical clearance has been obtained and trial registered with Pan African Trial Registry (www.pactr.org) PACTR201906918438423.

Abstract
Background: Iron deficiency is common in cardiovascular diseases (CVD), e.g., heart failure and coronary heart disease. Soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) is a promising marker representing unmet cellular iron demands. However, whether higher serum sTfR is associated with increased risk of CVDs needs further investigation. Methods: In the present cross-sectional study, we analyzed data of 4,867 adult participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017–2018. Linear regression models were employed to identify possible correlations between sTfR and other characteristics. The association between sTfR and CVDs was assessed with univariable and multivariable logistics regression models. Results: The prevalence of CVDs was 9.5% among participants, and higher sTfR levels were found in participants with CVDs (p < 0.001). Linear regression models revealed positive associations between sTfR and age, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, glycated hemoglobulin A1c, and insulin resistance (all p < 0.001). In the multivariable logistics regression model, the adjusted odds ratio of sTfR for CVDs was 2.05 (per 1 log2 mg/L, 95% confidence interval: 1.03∼4.05, p = 0.046). Further subgroup analysis identified the associations of sTfR and CVDs were only significant in participants ≥60 years old, or with hypertension (all p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that increased serum sTfR levels were associated with a high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases.
